ARTS of the iLembe District were left without electricity for more than two hours on Sunday after Eskom embarked on load shedding in the country. The load shedding was a result of a silo, carrying about10000tonsofcoal,collapsingatEskom’sMajuba Power Station in Mpumalanga on Saturday, and which threatened to continue for a while. According to Eskom spokesperson Andrew Etzinger, the incident had put their grid under immense pressure. He said Eskom had to resort to planned load shedding while engineers try to find the cause of the fracture which caused the collapse. However, since the incident efforts to fix the problem resulted in the risk of load shedding being reduced significantly with the prognosis for the week being better than expected.

He said by Monday coal supplies to two of the six units at the power station had been restored. “This means that one third of the power station's normal capacity is back in service,” said Etzinger. He said however, the power system remains under pressure and consumers are urged to use electricity sparingly for the remainder of the week. Etzinger said as a result of the collapse their coal conveyor systems were damaged. Alternativemeasureswereputinplacetodeliverthe coal needed on Sunday. “For units one and two, we had to bring in coal through an alternative delivery mechanism involving the trucking of coal. “Then the coals were placed on mobile conveyors using front-end loaders, and the current rate 1200 tonnes of coal per hour were brought in.”

Community to tackle crime >> Outraged residents want action from local police JYOTHI LALDAS

T

HE recent increase in crime in the Stanger Manor area prompted a community meeting with residents irate about the lack of steps being taken to curb the problem. The meeting was held to discuss a way forward in order to make the area safe again. In attendance was community members, ward councillor Madhun Sing, KwaDukuza Visible Policing (Vispol) commander Colonel Nene and other police representatives. According to Sing criminals have been running amok in Stanger Manor in the past few months and residents are complaining about the lack of response from the KwaDukuza SAPS. Sing said in some cases the police “never pitched up” despite an incident being reported. “House burglary is on the increase. The ‘five minute gang’ that drives around in posh vehicles have broken into homes and stolen flat screen TVs, computers, cell phones, jewellery and other items in a short space of time. It seems it is a well-organised syndicate

that is operating fast and furious.” Sing added despite private security companies on the lookout for suspicious people, these criminals are operating under their nose. It was established at the meeting that a co-ordinated effort is required to clamp down on the crime in the area. Among the residents’ demands were cameras at entry and exit points, roadblocks and visible policing. The KwaDukuza Crime Prevention Unit also came under fire as residents believe they are not doing enough to fight crime and are hardly seen in the Stanger Manor area. An appeal was made to residents to assist in fighting crime by numbering their homes, leaving at least one light switched on at night, talking to neighbours and exchanging phone numbers and reporting suspicious activities or persons to the police. Another concern raised at the meeting was the reluctance of police to investigate homes containing stolen goods as identified by residents. Residents believe that “shoddy work by the SAPS is letting criminals off the hook”.

Two die in accident

Addressing the meeting Colonel Nene told residents that he has only been in the position as Vispol commanderfortwoweeksandisstillgrappling with the challenges facing the community and the police. He urged the community to work together and said he would raise the concerns from residents at their management meeting. He also took notes and case numbers from residents to follow up and give feedback. Sectorpolicing’sLieutenantBonambi assured residents that the police station will soon have its own fingerprints department which would assist PHOTO: SUPPLIED to fast track cases. He also promised that a direct telephone line will be instituted reaching the cluster department in case of emergencies. Sing concluded by thanking the officers for attending and pledged to work Branch now together with them to create a plan to open at Unit 3, keep Stanger Manor safe. 5 Clark St Dawnside Stanger

SKOM was working on a simi lar solution for delivering coal to units five and six. He said units three and four were not affected. “In all likelihood we have averted planned load shedding. However, load shedding could still come into play at any time to reduce pressure on the grid during the summer months.” What is load shedding? When there is not enough electricity available to meet the demand from all Eskom customers, it could be necessary tointerruptsupplytocertainareas. This is called load shedding. It is different from a power outage that could occur for several other reasons. It is a last re sort to balance electricity supply and demand. CHOOLS opened in early January this year but messages of support are on ly flooding in now on radio and print, and we seem to be only concentrating on grade12pupilsatwhatseemstobethe11th hour. What does this say to us and what ef fect does it have on the pupils? I was a matric pupil in 2008 and for the most of us, there is nothing more difficult. We used to be told that grade 11 was the toughest grade and this resulted in the grade being called matric 1 and grade 12, downgraded to matric 2.0. One does not

understand the “truth” behind the state ment until one is overcome by the fear of receiving one's report card on Dday only to wait six hours and remain the last class in the whole school to get their results and fail. Yup, I failed grade 11 with a mathemat ics mark of a staggering 18%, but instead of being sent back to matric 1, I got parole in the form of “condoned” (the grey area between“pass”and“fail”andtheepitome of the standard of education in South Afri ca). Anyway, I got away with murder and “snuckinto”matric2onthebasisthatIwas disadvantaged by the teachers’ strike of 2007 that lasted six weeks. I seriously sucked in maths and no amount of lastminute catchup pro gramme would have likely saved my ass. Over the years, I have noticed how the fo cus of matric 2 has intensified and won dered if this is a good thing. First of all, I

The autonomy of our schools is crucial. It is a large factor in the success of many of our schools. This includes the right to set their own admissions policy, among others. But when that autonomy is used to gatekeep or reserve space for certain types of pupils it becomes a problem.

the high schools’ obsessive attempts at getting 100% passrates. My problem is that extra classes are now being conduct ed all of a sudden where pupils are made to attend “extra classes” on top of the two extra hours added to the school day. These extra classes suddenly spur just a few weeks before the final exams. Are high school principals suddenly shocked by the advent of “The Final Ex ams”, jolting them into rapid action to “catchup”? Why are we having Saturday classes only now as opposed to the eight months of school? Did we not know the exams were coming? Being a parttime tutor for highschool pupils, I am familiar with the frustration of grade12pupilsscramblingforrevisionsand a plethora of “extra classes” they are being forced to attend. In my own experience, many teachers are too lazy to keep up with the (now reduced) science and maths syl

found that the standard of grade 12 has “changed,” and not for the good, I think. While I was terrible in maths, I was not sobadatscienceandusuallyenjoyedgoing retro on the science books I read. I noticed duringonevisitatthelibrarythatthebiolo gy (life sciences) textbook prescribed for grade 12 had about the same content as an older (by giveortake five years) pre scribed book for grade 10. If you look at the books for other sub jectsyouwillalsonoticethistrend.Itseems that in an effort to increase the “pass rate” in grade 12, the government has not only turned “30%” to a pass, but it has made things “easier” for matrics. That sounds like a conspiracy theory, I know, but if I am somehow "neutralised" in the near future, please lookout for chalk marks and leath erjacket residue at the scene of the crime, #justSaying. What I have noticed in my township are

The law is very clear about schools denying ac cess to a pupil based on discriminations set out in our Constitution. The National Education Act says specifically of admissions: “The admission policy of a public school and the administration of admissions by an education department must not unfairly discriminate in any way against an ap plicant for admission.” It is therefore disconcerting that some schools seem to routinely deny admission to pupils, who in some cases live less than a kilometre from the

school to which they have applied, seemingly on the grounds of race, religion and other spurious claims. While, in these cases, there will be a followup with the Department of Education, it is worth re minding ourselves of the inherent advantages of diversity in our schools. It is therefore the duty of parents, school gov erning bodies and school authorities to actively strive to provide a holistic and diverse school envi ronment for our pupils.

Open letter to minister of police ALLOW me first of all to congratulate your department as well as the National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega on the swift ac tion by the members of the SAPS in the ar rest of three suspects so soon after the un fortunate shooting incident. This involving the African National Con gress Member of Parliament Jackson Nthembu on Sunday 19 October. The arrests in question, effected within 48 hours of this heinous act in Limpopo nonetheless, clearlydemonstratestheabil ity of the SAPS to act swiftly in cases of vio lent crime. This however, brings me to the reason for writing this letter. While the swift action in the case of Nthembu’s incident remains something to celebrate and congratulate the SAPS on,

labi and these extra classes seem to be 11th hour efforts at covering for this. The pupils are the victims. Right? No, some are just as lazy (I’ve been a super lazy pupilmyself,soIknow).Ihavenoticedhow some pupils have questions that should have been answered by teachers, ques tionsthatleavemeasking“whathavethey been teaching you the whole year?” and “what have you been doing in class while the teacher was teaching you?” It looks all doomandgloom right now and I am yapping about a problem I have no solution for. I do not know, perhaps readers may have a few pointers. Right now, I really hate seeing my sister having to make arrangements to find ac commodation closer to her school because they decided the grade 12 pupils need to have extra classes from 4pm to 7pm, just two weeks before the beginning of the fi nal exams.

this swift action also highlights the com monly held belief that justice exists only for the wealthy and well connected. Surely the fact that these three suspects were apprehended in Limpopo, hundreds of kilometresawayfromtheinitialsceneofthe crime in Witbank, would be an indication that the SAPS does in fact have the capacity and the will to solve crimes swiftly? Why then does swift action such as this only appear to happen when the victim of the crime is someone famous, wealthy or wellconnected with the government? I am sure the public would agree with me when I ask why swift action such as this ap pears nonexistent when a normal citizen falls victim to violent crimes such as this? TheprioritisationofcrimeinSouthAfrica seems to be purely geared towards those

who could further advance or protect their careers and increase their favor in the ruling party at the expense of the normal citizen, the same citizen you as a member of parlia ment should be serving. I trust this letter will serve as a reminder of your position as a servant of the people and not a ruler, the same people who placed their trust in you to serve them to the best of your abilities and place their interest above that of your fellow members of Par liament and ruling party members. This small little fact being something all ministers seem to remember only when votes are needed. I implore you and your department to place the same emphasis on all violent crimes and solve the cases with the same speed as has been done in the case of your fellow MP and ANC member. >> Ballito prepares for traffic ‘madness’ as festive season approaches SHANNON HOPKINS

W

ITH Ballito traffic congestion reaching boiling point, role players are urgently seeking solutions ahead of the festive season – just five weeks away. The widening and upgrade of the P445, Ballito Drive, has caused traffic delays and frustration for months. The work was to end this month, but due to bad weather and construction complications, this date is now moved to February 2015. The plan is to have two lanes in and two lanes out of Ballito by December - the finished roadwillboastsixlanes, says SMEC’s David Duke. At a meeting called by Dolphin Coast Residents and Ratepayers Association (DOCRRA) at La Montagne on Monday, deploying points men throughout the day and road construction night shifts were discussed. “WehavetohaveaplanforDecember, as every year Ballito is jampacked in season and we are already experiencing traffic gridlocks. “People will go elsewhere to shop and businesses will lose out if we do nothing. December is an economic lifeline for Ballito. Even if business pulls together to help pay for extra

services,” said DOCRRA chairman Louis Luyt. A resident said his research had shown business was already down about 30 to 40%. When getting more points men to direct traffic throughout the day was suggested, Traffic Department’s Johnny Moodley said they did not have the manpower. “We have approached the Department of Transport, but are unlikely to get assistance,” said Moodley. He added points men would probably not be needed all day, just during peak hours. The traffic department already have points men at the most congested four way stops near the Lifestyle Centre for about six hours a day. KwaDukuza Municipality (KDM) infrastrusture and technical’s councillor Sandeep Oudram said the publicshouldnothavetopaymoreforservices that the municipality is responsible for. “Iwillbefast-trackingmeetingson the matter with municipal representatives so that we can come up with solutions as soon as possible and keep the public informed,” said Oudram. He said the four-way stops that replaced the traffic circles are causing traffic back up, but it was the only option to allow for widening of the road.

Global Akhanda Bhajans THE Sathya Sai International Organisation will be hostingtheirannualGlobalAkhandaBhajansallover the world on Saturday, 8 November, commencing at 6pmandconcludingonSunday,9November,at6pm. In KwaDukuza the event will be held at the Glenhills Multipurpose Centre from 6pm on Saturday until 6pm on Sunday. This is a 24hour, nonstop singing of the glory of God. It is a call for global unity and peace. It is a multi faith event. If we calculate this event observed globally, we will note that according to South African time, this event will start at 8am on Saturday in New Zealand and end in Hawaii at 8am, SA time, on Monday. Throughout this time there will be nonstop bhajans and the light will be kept burning all over the world within a rolling 24hour timeframe through to Monday. Khanda – means at a specific time. Akhanda(continuous)Bhajansinvolvesconstant contemplation on God in the morning, evening and duringthenight. ItisconstantcontemplationonGod during all the three states – the waking, dream and deep sleep states. The listener is equally impacted by the repetition of God’s name as those who chant or sing. Continuous singing of the glories of God is impor tant for the purification of the atmosphere. A collective activity and the power of collective prayer, especiallybeingdoneglobally, simultaneous ly are unfathomable. It permeates every inch of the world with the power of God’s name. The constant thought of God leaves an impres sion on the mind and a consciousness of atmic awareness. God responds when prayers are made from the heart. People all over the world read sacred books that talk about various aspect of a culture or religion. The cosmos or the universe is said to be the best book in the world, as it is the real teacher in life. Whatever we learn must be applied to life. The experiences we have draws from the philosophies we read and therefore become our school. This school needs to be kept clean and pure. Prayer, singing the glory of God, good thoughts and the common re quirementforpeaceandlovepermeatestheuniverse and therefore send back positive vibrations that we require. This is called the power of attraction. Music is a powerful medium that uses ether and sound.Thebhajansorhymnsthataresungpermeate the ether in the form of sound waves and fill the en tire atmosphere. Thereby the whole environment gets purified. Breathing in this purified atmosphere, our hearts get purified. Reciting the Lord’s name is a process of give and take. Singing the Lord’s name should become an ex ercise in mutual sharing of joy and holiness. It should be remembered that the sounds we pro duce reverberate in the atmosphere. They remain permanently in the ether as waves and outlast the individual uttering the sounds. Knowing the power of music, let us all join in and create a global energy and vibration that will dimin ish the negative energies that exist in the world and make the world a better place. The programme is a multipronged approach committed to bringing services to the people with speed. “We continue to play exemplary roles in dealing with social decay through the implementation of Operation Sukuma Sakhe. The fruits of working in harmony with stakeholders are starting to shower light on our people and our association resulting to positive spin-offs,” said Ward 25 councillor Sanele Mfeka said during the OSS Sports programme in Sakhuxolo, Doringkop on Saturday, 25 October at the event organised by NGO, Uguquko and the local war room. The war room is a social structure

chaired by the ward councillors, where people and the government meet to deal with issues. Mfeka was presiding over the official hand-over ceremony of sports gear to local soccer teams, sponsored by the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Sports and Recreation, the KwaDukuza Municipality and stakeholders. “The success of this event is a clear indication that a lot can be achieved if we work in unity. “We offer our heartfelt appreciation to the provincial government for ensuring that the social transformation in our area happens with speed, working with our local municipality that continues to lead the implemen-

You were someone who took time to think of other people’s needs, your warmth touched so many hearts with gentle words and thoughtful deeds. A million words would never express our love and sorrow.

The winning group received R3000 to be donated to the small business development/entrepreneur ship programme at a school of their choice, the only

condition being that the school needed to have an existing small business development programme and needed to be within the municipal boundaries of the iLembe District Municipality. “We chose Darnall Primary School in order to sup port their exceptional entrepreneur programme, which teaches children from as early as grade 1 to 6 theuseofmoneyandencouragesentrepreneurialcre ativityingrade7’sthroughtheirannualGrade7Entre preneur Day and market activities” said Errol Dhani ram, one of the A Team members. To hear your voice, to see your smile, To sit and talk with you awhile; To be together in the same old way Would be our dearest wish today. The hard working secretary, Desigan Pillay, who was also instrumental in moulding the junior players, received the coveted president’s award. Manor honoured their junior players, namely Mayuren Logenathan, Alex Pillay, Kyle Chinakanoo, Shivaan Singh,Saieshan Logenathan, Jayden Pillay, Irshaad Moolla, Aaron Pillay, Zameer Maharaj and Ridwaan Mhlongo who earned Ilembe caps in the 2013/2014 season.

Nadasen smashed a “quickfire” 37 runs which included five fours and a six before offering a simple return catch to offspinner Sireshan Pillay. Iqbal Sher, noted for his calypso style cricket raced to 29runs with three fours and two towering sixes be fore being caught at long off by Neo Pillay off the bowling of Stanton Gov ender in the 10th over. Long-standing president of the club, Narendra Singh said: “Manor Cricket Club was founded in 1997 after the youngsters living in and around Daffodil and Violet Street in Manor became aware, after playing ‘street or backyard’ cricket, that they had some talent and decided to form Manor Cricket Club and affiliate to the North Coast League for the 1997/1998 season. “From humble beginnings, Manor has grown to be a much respected club that is affiliated to the Ilembe and District Cricket Union.” Singh heaped praise upon founding members of the club, namely Lex Maharaj, Mahen Reddy, Desigan Pillay and Kamlin Reddy. In the 1998/1999 season Manor enlisted the services of former KwaZulu-Natalcap,YunusMooradastheircoach. Under his guidance the club won the 50 overs league and the 30 overs league. With less than five minutes remaining, Ndlovu redeemed himself after latching onto a pass from Mchunu to give Nkobongo a resounding 5-1 win. But, they were caught on the counter-attack barely 10 minutes into the second half, which resulted in their lead being reduced to 3-1. In the 60th minute there were raptures of jubilation after Dlamini’s “magical step-over” before dribbling past the Tigers keeper and tapping the ball into an empty goalmouth to restore Nkobongo’s 3-goal cushion (4-1). Ten minutes later the Tigers central defender, assuming the role of a sweeper, deliberately handled the ball in the box and the referee had no choice, but to give him marching orders (red-carded) and award Nkobongo a penalty.
