WAZULU-NATAL MEC for arts, culture, sports and recreation, Ntombikayise SibhidlaSaphetha together with KwaDukuza mayor Ricardo Mthembu launched Operation Sukuma Sakhe in Shayamoya (Ward 23) yesterday (Tuesday). They also unveiled a brand new outdoor gym and playground in the heart of township. The Operation Sukuma Sakhe champion and mayor visited three households as part of government efforts to relieve people from poverty. Mthembu also introduced officials from various government departments to the community who had to deal with a number of service delivery issues on the spot. The mayor also explained that the War Room is a platform where communities can interact with government. “If you want to know what progress is being made in your ward, go to the War Room and the information will be available there. If your are not happy, there are various ways for you to get in touch with us,” said Mthembu, emphasising the need for communities to get involved in all government programmes. Mthembu went on to say: “The community has been waiting for this

“If you see that something is not right do something about and try to fix it. If people have issues relating to water, electricity, roads and other issues there should be representatives from those departments.” She added this is because the aim

of the War Rooms is to bring services closer to the people. She went on to say if departments attended these meetings other issues would be resolved speedily. “I also want to urge you to work with ward committees.”

OMMUTING to work, school, clinics or anywhere around KwaDukuza has been difficult for many, with the Department of Community Safety and Transport rolling out its operation Shanela in KwaDukuza for almost a week now. The operation, which commenced on Monday, has seen many taxis being impounded leaving hundreds of people stranded on the roadsides without transport. Dolphin Coast Taxi Association spokesperson, Mdu Tony, said it is “painful” that operation Shanela always comes into the area when there are taxi feuds. “Impounding taxis will not solve

problems. The department needs to meet with the taxi association members who are involved in the dispute because Shanela has affected even those who are not involved.” Tony added that KwaDukuza, Dolphin Coast and Maphumulo taxis have been greatly affected by the operation. He went on to say that there are many taxis that do not have permits in the area since the department is no longerissuingpermits. Some of those who applied for permits previously have not received them. “This is a problem for commuters. There are more of them already and few vehicles to transport them to clinics hospitals, school and work. “New malls are being built and

WADUKUZA mayor Ricardo Mthembu is encouraging residents of KwaDukuza and the iLembe District to register to vote on Saturday, 9 November and Sunday, 10 November. He said Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) branches all over KwaDukuza will be open during normal office hours. “Remember to bring your barcoded South African identity doc-

ument in order to register.” He said it is also important for those who have registered before to check if their names still appear on the voter’s roll. They will also have to check that their details are up-to-date. “We have come a long way and in order for us to protect our democratic gains, we have to use our power to vote in the elections. “I want to urge all our citizens to take this opportunity to register in the nearest registration centres in their communities.”

Grandfather locked up for life THE KwaDukuza Regional Court has convicted and sentenced a 63-year-old to 25 years’ imprisonment for repeatedly raping an 11-yearold girl. On Sunday, 9 February at about 1pm, the accused raped his granddaughter while at home in the Mandeni area. According to KZN SAPS spokesperson captain Thulani Zwane, the accused was caught by his wife during the act. “The child told the grandmother that it is not the first time she was raped by her grandfather. “A case of rape was then opened at Newark SAPS and was investigated by KwaDukuza Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit.” Provincial commissioner lieutenant general Mmamonnye Ngobeni expressed her confidence in the judicial system. “The sentence handed down will send a clear message to would-be offenders that the police will trace, arrest and successfully prosecute them.”

Commuters “fedup” with taxi violence NOXOLO MEMELA COMMUTERS using the Dolphin Coast Taxi Association and Stanger Association of taxis say they are “fedup” with the ongoing violence between the two associations. Commuters from Tete, Shakashead, Shakaskraal, Ballito and Stanger who use public transport daily say they are unhappy with the feud over routes as it is disruptive. “I am always late at work because of these taxis. “I wonder when they will stop and resolvetheirissues,”saidMandlaSibiya, who travels from Stanger to Shakashead twice daily. Another commuter, Thabsile

Khawula, who travels from Stanger to Ballito daily said he has received a warning for being late due to the taxi situation. “Even if we leave home early we still get delayed. “Sometimes we get these security guys stopping the taxi for long periods doing absolutely nothing but walking around it. “We also feel unsafe with all these guns being carried while we are being commuted,” said Khawula. Last month taxi driver Khulekani Mdletshe and taxi owner Dennis Mhlongo were shot and killed while looking for a panelbeater in Shakaskraal. Justice Mthethwa, Mthunzi Ma-

thenjwa and Mbhekiseni Luthuli were arrested on the day and charged with murder, attempted murder and possession of firearms. Dumisani Sikhakhane was arrested the following week in Shakaskraal where he was found in possession of a 9mm pistol with 13 live rounds. He faces two counts of murder, three counts of attempted murder and possession of an illegal firearm. Dolphin Coast Taxi Association’s publicrelationsofficer,MduTony, said the situation is getting “worse each day”. “The communities have told us of their frustrations, but there is nothing we are doing wrong or can do.

“The [Stanger association] is always provoking us,” said Tony. The Provincial Department of Transport, Community safety and Liaison said the Taxi Violence Unit is keeping a close watch to deter further incidents. Provincial SAPS spokesman, captain Thulani Zwane said, “The case has been moved from its original area of jurisdiction to the Durban High court. “Suspects appeared on 30 October where they had to apply for legal representation. Suspects are currently in Westville prison. “The case was remanded until 11 November for another bail application,” said Zwane.

Councillor rejects demands as having a “political agenda” NOXOLO MEMELA / MERVYN KRISHNA

A Ward councillor Ann McDonnell has rejected claims by a group of residents that she is distributing food parcels to DA registered voters and hampering service delivery. Ward 22 (Shakaskraal) councillor McDonnell, said at a mayoral imbizo in late October that allegations made against her and the DA are part of a “political agenda” to taint the party ahead of next year’s elections.

Councillor Ann McDonnell PHOTO: MERVYN KRISHNA

The imbizo took an unexpected turn when Shakaskraal residents handed an ultimatum to KwaDukuza mayor Ricardo Mthembu, insisting that he reply to a list of demands issued that day. The list includes various service delivery issues as well as a demand to remove certain Ward committee members who they allege are hampering service delivery. This includes McDonnell. The group hit out at McDonnell and her Ward committee for “undermining” the community. They claim the committee is issuing government food hampers worth R1 200 to DA supporters only. McDonnellhasdismissedtheclaims. “The person who handed these grievances is not even a member of the Ward committee. He is on his own mission together with the ANC to remove me as councillor,” she said. “They are bitter that although they voted for the ANC, the DA ended up

winning the Ward. This is a political agenda because the DA won and most of the Ward committee members are ANC. Those members who are fulfilling their mandate for the Ward are seen as being DA.” She said the memorandum was not about service delivery but about removing her and those who are perceived as “non-ANC” members. “I would like to meet with the community more frequently, but every public meeting is disrupted by some hooligans, making progress impossible. “Those organising the disruption had been a part of the committee who had prioritised projects but did not understand that housing is already prominent on the IDP. They want things to be done their way and forget the mandate of the municipality,” she said. McDonnell will meet with Mthembu this week to try to resolve matters.

HEGreaterKwaDukuzaRegional ANC Youth League held a “peaceful and successful” three days elective conference over the weekend at the Regal Inn Hotel, Ballito. The local ANCYL was the first region in the country to comply with the constitutional requirements of holding a congress and subsequently holding a successful regional congress in the rebuilding phase. Initially the local ANCYL held its elective conference during the time that the national leadership had been disbanded by the ANC. In KZN four regions were disbanded, while four had qualified to prepare for the conference. Two others are still being assessed. The ruling party had banned its structures from having conferences after July 2013. This was so that they could concentrate on election campaigns for the 2014 General Elections. National ANCYL task team convenor Mzwandile Masina said although there were regions that had been disbanded and the directive was that no region can hold its conference after July, an exception was made for the Greater KwaDukuza Region. “A go-aheadwasgiventotheGreater KwaDukuza Youth League to have its elective congress and we congratulate them for a having a peaceful one.” Newly-elected regional ANCYL sec-

Formula 1 shakes provide highquality soy protein, healthy carbohydrates, vita mins, minerals, amino acids and other nu trients to provide the cells of your body what they need for optimum health. You will be able to tell the difference from your usual breakfast after the very first shake. The soy protein in Formula 1 shakes is beneficial for both men and women. Numerous scientific studies demon strate the benefits of soy protein for heart health when included as part of a healthy, lowfat diet, which is why Formula 1 shakes have a healthy heart symbol on every label. Research shows that drinking two shakes a day and eating one healthy meal will lead to weight loss, while having one shake a day will keep the weight off for years. Formula 1 shakes are the ideal meal for everyone, whether they want to lose weight, keep off the weight they have lost or just maintain their naturally healthy weight. If you’re lactose intolerant, simply add soy milk to Formula 1 Nutritional Shake Mix. Most humans are lactose intolerant to some degree. You lose nothing when you substitute soy milk for dairy milk from a health stand point. Why you need a healthy breakfast When you wake up in the morning after go ing 10 12 hours without food, your energy reserves are low and your body and brain need fuel. Besides, your body has spent 1 litre of water during the night through breathing,

sweating and morning visit to the bath room. So your body wakes up “empty” and on be half of 100 trillion cells begs you, “Hey, give me back all the nutrients, energy and water I spent in the last 24 hours”. What you choose to eat for breakfast can affect your mood, physical and mental performance, weight and your general and longterm health. The big question is What do you feed your body in the morning? All our bodies wake up in the morning 'empty' with normal sugar levels. What we decide to eat for breakfast will determine what will happen to our blood sugar level for the rest of the day. Carbs-based breakfast: In the morning, simple carbohydrates (sugary refined cereals, white breads, toasts, etc.) cause an immediate surge of blood sugar level which results in the body over compensating for the extra sugar load the excess is converted and stored as fat. The result a decreased level of blood sugar and a craving for more carbs. This cycle then repeats it self 23 more times during the day. Skipping breakfast: When you skip breakfast your blood sugar drops below the normal level. You experience cravings for food and a drop in

energy. You are again tempted to revert to simple carbohydrates to achieve a quick surge of energy. Simple carbohydrates will cause an im mediate surge of blood sugar level followed by the body compensating for the extra sug ar load. Excess sugar turns into fat. Then this cy cle repeats itself 23 more times during the day again. These vicious cycles constitutes one of the reasons for the development of other major health challenges and extra weight. So...Wouldyouliketoknowwhatagood breakfast is supposed to be? The balanced breakfast: Your first meal in the morning should meet these four main criteria: Replace the energy (from proteins, carbohy drates & good fats) that was consumed yes terday, when you were active. Provide the body with all the nutri ents(buildingblocksproteins, aminoacids, vitamins, minerals) used during the night. Replenish the wa ter stock. Herbalife has devel oped the complete and perfect Healthy Breakfast Program to ensure your body gets everything men tioned above.

April to June 2013: 29900

Big win for Morningside in November 1 edition WITH reference to the above article dates 1 November 2013, we as mem bers of the Flipside Cricket Club are upset about being called “Flopside”. Our team consists of young teen agers and they strive to perform at their best. That statement is defama tory and is demotivating to our play ers and especially our sponsors. Just for the record, Harry Naidoo started his career at Flipside and not forgetting Tyron Pillay as well who al so played for the Dolphins.

We humbly request you publish an apology to our club, players and of ficials. Mukesh Maharaj

IN LOVING MEMORY

One year has gone by, yet it seems like yesterday. Many memories in our minds, some we laugh and some we cry. The times we shared and the laughter we had are things we miss when we think of you. You had a special way that warmed the hearts of everyone who knew you. The qualities that made you the wonderful person you were, have left us Gopichand with many beautiful Sunpersadh memories that will be treasured forever. Each moment we gather the absence of your loving smile and sense of humour becomes easily noticeable. Missing you is the reality that fills us with so much grief. We love you. Sadly missed by your wife, sons, daughters, daughters-inlaw, sons-in-law, grandchildren and a host of family & friends. Inserted by:Ashok &Anitha Mahadu.

In Loving Memory How little we knew that morning, what sorrow that day would bring, and we wonder why you had to leave us without a chance to say goodbye. Our family chain has broken, our special son and brother has left us and gone so suddenly. No one Sathianandham Morgan knows the pain we (Ravi) bear when we gather and you are Called to Rest: 26-10-2013 not there. What a memory you left behind, deep in our hearts. th You and your family are invited to the 15 and 16th Day Ceremony of the late Sathianandham Morgan (Ravi) on 09th and 10th November 2013 at 113 Jacaranda Crescent, Darnall, supper will be served at 5pm and the service will be from 7pm. Please accept this as a personal invitation. Sadly missed by his mother (Baiguim), sisters (Vanessa & Lucy), brothers-in-law (Selvan, Aziz & Indran), nieces (Nikita, Kivona & Nicole) and a host of family and friends.

AUM

KALI NAGOORAN (AKA JOHN) (26/11/1945 – 06/11/2011) Two years have passed since that fatal call, your hastened departure shook us all. Your life was full of family & friends, a helping hand to all those who were in need. We sincerely mourn your loss in silence in repeating your glowing name, but all there is to answer, is your photo in a frame. How much we miss you will never be known. You closed your eyes to ease the pain. The golden days we shared with you, are just a dream. You wouldn’t come back, we know its true. But someday, we know we will come to meet you. Eternal thanks Appa for everything you have done. Forever loved, honoured, cherished, treasured and always missed. Inserted by Narrine and Kubashini Perumal and family.

UNTIL WE MEET AGAIN APPA

A whopping R5 000 prizemoney is up for grabs in this year’s Sanaa KO Cup showpiece with the win ner pocketing R1 500 and the runnerup waltzing away with a cool R1 000. Eightteamswillbevyingforhonoursintheevent. Teams knocked out in the first round will advance to the plate section of the tournament. The first round loser in the plate section will collect R250 with the runnerup and winner of the plate section pock eting R400 and R300 respectively. The third placed winner in the main section will win R600 with the fourth placed team earning R500 in prizemoney. The final in the plate and main section will take place on Thursday, 14 November. The presentation of prizemoney and the Sanaa KO Cup to the winners and runnersup will take place at the SDVA awards banquet scheduled for Friday, 13 December at the KwaDukuza Town Hall. At the draws held a fortnight ago, Virgo and Cool Leaders, who meet in the first round of the competi tion have a relatively easy passage to the final. They do battle with the winner of the Darnall Action Sporting/Manor Old Boys clash in the semi’s. The top three finishers in the 2013 SDVA Social League, champions Titans, runnersup Teachers Style and third placed Sunbrook have been grouped together in the bottom half of the draws. Teachers Style, who have beaten Preston in three league ap pearances since the start of the 2013 season, should have the measure of their opponents in the opening round, butareexpectedtolockhornswiththewinner of the Titans/Sunbrook clash. Newly crowned social league champions Titans will be hoping to add the Sanaa KO Cup silverware to their collection and finish the season on a high note. SDVA treasurer, Rajiv Mathapersad warned that clubs who fail their R200 entry fee by tomorrow (Thursday) will not be allowed to participate in the tournament.

Nkobongo’s manofthe match notches unbeaten century WEEKLY REPORTER

N

KOBONGO Cricket Club trounced Mandeni by 159-runs in an Ilembe and District Cricket Union 50 overs League game played at the Country Club Ground on Sunday. Nkobongo’s emphatic victory must be attributed to the outstanding performance by man-of-the-match, Rocky Mgobhoziwhonotchedupabrilliantunbeaten century (103 not out) and some atrocious bowling by their opponents who conceded more than 60 runs in extras (comprising of wides, no balls and byes). Nkobongo won the toss and elected to bat first. boundaries before being clean bowled by Bayanda Mthembu in the 38th over. With the quick fall of two wickets, Sifiso Mkhwanazi (1) and Agreement Sibiya (1), Mgobhozi’s hopes (who was unbeaten on 90) of reaching a century looked slim. But, with four overs remaining, Mgobhozi hogged the batting, ensuring a well deserved century (103n.o.) which included 5 fours and 6 sixes to take Nkobongo to a massive 251/8 at the end of their allotted 50-overs. Mjadu was the pick of the Mandeni bowlers claiming 3/49 from 10 overs. Mthembu claimed 2/34 from 9 overs. Thubelihle Zulu was the only batsman to offer any resistance, notching up 20 runs. Innocent Khoza was the destroyerin-chief for Nkobongo claiming 3/13 from 6 overs. Mkhwanazi (2/13 from 5 overs), Mondli (2/19 from 6 overs) and Gebani (2/12 from 5 overs) grabbed two wickets apiece.
