OLICE are investigating whether the murder of two police officers, allegedly by a fellow officer, may involve more police, a source close to the probe says.

More police officers were questioned on Thursday last week for their role in the double murder, in which a high ranking KwaDukuza policeman is accused of shooting two colleagues in the head.

And, according to a well-placed source, the questioning by investigators had more to do with whether the crime scene had purposely been tainted than direct involvement.

Constable Sibusiso Mthethwa (31) and student Constable Thobani Xulu (26) were shot in the head as they sat in the front seats of their police minibus on the side of the R74 in KwaDukuza on Saturday morning, Febraury 1.

A fourth police officer sustained minor injuries.

It has emerged thatXulu’s father, station commander at Nkandla police station, is a former colleague of the alleged shooter.

The accused, Lieutenant Thulamuza Mokoena (53), made a brief appearance before the KwaDukuza Magistrate’s Court on Thursday last week.

He was not asked to plead and requested legal aid. The case was postponed until tomorrow (Thursday 13 February) and set down for the bail application.

The court building was surrounded and closely monitored by heavily armed policemen.

Police told The Weekly that there were concerns for Mokoena’s safety after a group of armed men allegedly arrived at his home in Groutville looking for him on Monday last week.

He had, however, already been arrested and taken into custody that afternoon. While Mokoena has been arrested, the firearm has yet to be recovered.

OME-OWNERS in Ballito and surrounds will soon join hands with the KwaDukuza Municipality (KDM) and Eskom in an effort to reduce electricity demand.

This comes as a result of the municipality and Eskom partnering to implement the Integrated Demand Management (IDM) Residential Load Management (RLM) project aimed at managing electrical demand during peak energy use periods.

The project, now in its second phase, will see geyser control devices (also called switches, receivers or relays) connected to geysers enabling them to be switched on and off remotely from 6pm to 8pm daily (peak time). Areas which will fall into the project include Ballito, Tinley Manor, Sheffield Beach, Salt Rock, Shakaskraal, Umhlali, Shakas Rock, Port Zimbali and Fox Hill.

Speaking at a press briefing at KwaDukuza chambers last Friday, Eskom IDM manager Sibusiso Tshabalala said the installations will be at no cost to residents.

“The aim here is to reduce the strain on the electricity grid. Geysers use up to 50 per cent of your household electricity consumption which makes them the ideal starting point for electricity demand management in the residential sector. The main advantage of the load management system is that the relay system can switch the heating element off during peak demand periods.”

He said that the project is needed because Eskom’s residential customers consume around 17.5 per cent of the total electricity generated

source close to the investigation said the police were looking at whether officers had interfered with the crime scene. “They are looking at whether the officers in the kombi were, or had been, involved in extortion and if so from who they extorted.

“They are also looking at whether other officers may have tried to derail the investigation and what their motive for doing so

could have been,” said the source.

“One theory is that there was an argument in the vehicle over money before the shooting took place.

“There is also evidence pointing that either all or just one of the officers in the kombi had been drinking alcohol as both open and closed bottles of liquor were found at the scene,” said the source.

Hawks’ spokesperson Paul Ramaloko confirmed more officers had been called in for questioning but would not give further details.

SAPS provincial communications officer Captain Thulani Zwane would not comment on the details but confirmed further questioning of police officers was underway.

“We can’t comment on specifics in this sensitive investigation but the police are making various lines of inquiry. The fourth officer who was present in the police vehicle at the time of the shooting has been released from hospital. As with any investigation he has been interviewed,” said Zwane.

Mokoena, a career police officer, was promoted to lieutenant in 2011. According to official police records he has not been found guilty of an internal offence since 1987. The offence was not listed.

Bongani Xulu, student Constable Thobani’sfather,saidhissonhadalways wanted to be a police officer.

“When he was growing up he would walk with me to the gate on my way to work. He would sometimes have my hat on his head.

“After completing Grade 12, he got a clerical job at Stanger police station and that was his first step into the police force,” said Xulu.

He said what hurt most is the fact that he knew the officer alleged to have killed his son.

He said his other son, also a student constable, was not taking his brother’s death well. “He is disturbed by this and now, as a family, we are looking at arranging the funeral. We have a son who [...] has not been the same since he heard about his brother’s death,” he said.

Bongani will be buried in Manyane, Nkandla on Saturday.

‘Voodoo doll’ charges dismissed MERVYN KRISHNA TWO KwaDukuza residents who were charged for theft by false pretence in November last year had the charges against them dismissed due to a lack of evidence at the KwaDukuza Magistrate’s Court on Thursday last week.

Ayesha Khan and Morgesh Singh were charged after several businessmen came forward and said the duo worked as a team to extort money from them by throwing ‘voodoo dolls’ in their yard.

The following morning when they got up, the family would get scared when they came across the dolls with needles pierced into it.

The businessmen then claimed that they would contact Singh who brought Khan to conduct a prayer.

Khan told the Weekly that she does not believe in voodoo dolls and black-magic.

Singh said he was glad it was all over.

“Khan only uses me for transport,” he told the Weekly.

The biggest winner for the day was Stanger Manor Secondary School, bagging 31 awards for the recognition of pupils, teachers and the school as a whole.

Principal TM Gounden said he was pleased and proud of his staff and his pupils and wished the latter the best for their future endevours.

One killed in accident

A TAXI driver died and 14 commuters were injured after their vehicle rolled along the R102 between Stanger and Darnell on Saturday afternoon.

Reports indicate that the taxi veered

off the roadway and rolled into the culvert adjacent to the R102. Its passengers were ejected and found lying near the wreckage on the road verge.

Netcare 911 paramedics and other ser-

vices arrived at the scene and found that the commuters sustained injuries ranging from serious to minor. After the wounded were stabilised on scene, paramedics transported them to a local hospital.

NGRY residents of Happy Valley near Glenhills took to the streets in protest of poor service delivery, barricading the road leading to the village with burning tyres and rocks.

The protest started on Friday night and continued into the early hours of Saturday morning.

Community members were demanding electricity in the area from the KwaDukuza Municipality.

Other concerns included tarred roads and street lights.

KwaDukuza mayor Ricardo Mthembu addressed the community on Saturday morning, saying Happy Valley together with areas from all

“Come 2015, the municipality will have zero electricity backlogs.”

Councillor Sundeep Oudhram, who is the chairperson of infrastructure and technical portfolio, said on Friday last week the adjudication process for a contractor was completed.

“The contractor has been identified via the supply chain management process. Now, we will have to wait for the 14 day objection period.

“Should there be no objection, come 28 February, the contractor will be on site to commence work,” said Oudhram.

The mayor together with his officials will meet with the Happy Valley community on February 28 at 9am.

JUST a couple of months after we bid farewell to the pervy man in red from the North Pole, Hallmark and florists the world over demand more of our money for heartshaped chocolates, flowers which are marked up 300% and cards with pre-printed sentiments from Helen Steiner Rice and others of her ilk.

There are gifts to be bought, dates to be paid for, weddings to be bankrupted by, and unless you’re one of the lucky ones, a messy divorce and alimony to follow.

I have often wondered how Valentine’s Day is celebrated in polygamous societies.

Does our esteemed president make a week out of it, taking out one wife every evening at taxpayers’ expense?

Or does he spoil a different wife every year?

Perhaps he hosts an annual game of poker with his wives, the winner of which is showered with presidential pleasures on the 14th.

Single people, I believe should follow the example of a friend of mine, who hosts an anti-Valentines-day party every year.

When surrounded by the nauseating heightened levels of love, lust and expenditure, it’s better to be out and about with friends than home alone snivelling into your worn copy of Bridget Jones’ diary.

After this, there is Easter to be endured, with children hyped up on chocolate running amok around our neighbourhoods.

Thereafter, we have the elections and accompanying shenanigans.

But maybe, if we’re lucky, we will get a few months of peace after that before the fireworks start.

Child Welfare scores top marks MERVYN KRISHNA CHILD Welfare SA-KwaDukuza was given top marks by monitoring and evaluation officials from the Department of Social Development recently.

Thiscomes after a thorough inspection-inloco conducted on all their projects including the society’s service delivery, business plans, governing structure, implementation of policiesandlegislations,administrationstatistics, maintenance of registers, human resources management, staff structure and safety measures in financial management.

The society was commended for aligning its programmes with the department’s Service Level Agreement.

Senior social work manager Penny Dhaver said this is an acknowledgment of the society’s compliance with requirements.

“The effective and efficient management and governance of the Society, excellent service delivery and the society’s attempts to resolve the challenges with the Groutville Community Care Homes projects were also acknowledged,” said Dhaver.

President of the society, Pravin Sham, said the positive report from the department highlights the profile of the society and confirms its status as a symbol of social empowerment in the community.

ROTEC KwaDukuza pupils were awarded recently for excelling in the 2013 National Senior Certificate examinations.

The KwaDukuza branch achieved a 100% pass rate, in accordance with the trend established since the inception of the programme.

Out of the 40 matric pupils who participated in the programme, 31 received a bachelor's pass, six obtained diploma passes, and three pupils passed with admission to a higher certificate.

According to PROTEC KwaDukuza manager Collin Naicker, even more impressive was that a total of 74 subject distinctions were achieved “out of this small pool of gifted pupils”.

“Out top achievers included Brilliant Dube from Groutville Secondary who achieved a whopping seven distinctions.

“Glenhills Secondary produced three notable pupils, Saiyuren Ramsamy and Muhammed Kallan,whobothachievedsixdistinctionseach, followed by Kitesh Sookdawe with five.”

MM Maziwe, chairman of PROTEC KwaDukuza, presented awards to those pupils who received bachelors' passes and the top performers.

In his address, he complimented pupils for their utmost dedication, commitment and willingness towards their studies and their attendance of the Saturday classes.

Brilliant who is pursuing his studies in chemical engineering at UKZN, said: “As a pupil from

a disadvantaged school, it was very difficult to pass the practical subjects like maths and physics, but with the help of the PROTEC classes,

Thabane Shwabetha squandered an opportunity of putting Mavusana ahead in the 10th minute after he missed the target from close range. Siphosenkosi Gumede pounced onto a blunder by the Mavusana keeper Nkulelekho Makhatini and gently tapped the ball into an empty goal-mouth to give Doringkop a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute.

In the 25th minute Sbu Mngadi received a perfect through ball from Shwobetha, but instead of shooting at goal, he tried to beat the Doringkop central defender and lost possession.

JERRY Govender has been unanimously reelected as president of Ilembe Darts Association (formerly known as Dolphin Coast Darts Union) at its annual general meeting held on Wednesday, 5 February at the Action Sports Bar in Darnall.

In his presidential address, Govender commended all players on the spirit of camaraderie that prevailed throughout the 2013 season and urgedallplayerstodisplaythesamekindofzeal and enthusiasm in the 2014 season.

He thanked his dedicated band of officials for their support and commitment throughout the year and heaped praise upon all sponsors for injecting money towards the upliftment of darts in KwaDukuza. He urged the younger generation (especially the youth from Mandeni, Darnall and KwaDukuza) to get involved in

playing the sport.

Govender said: “Talented players will not only play domestic darts but have the opportunity to pit their skills in the inter-district tournament and the national darts championship which takes place in July.”

Other officials elected to serve on the cabinet are Charlie Pillay (vice-president), Rajen Pillay (general secretary), Dave Govender (treasurer), Nine Pillay (tournament director), Vinesh Geanballey (development officer/public relationsofficer),VasaRungasamyandReaganNaicker (executive members).

Tonight (Wednesday) Ilembe Darts Association will host a singles darts tournament at the Action Sports Bar in Darnall commencing at 7.30pm.

ELL known level one cricket coach Delialyn Subrayan will launch the Ilembe Coaching Academy on Saturday, 15 February at the KwaDukuza Country Club Ground commencing at 9am.

Subrayan has been involved in cricket for more than two decades. He started his cricketing careerathighschoollevelandrepresentedStanger and District in the KwaZulu-Natal High Schools U16 age group for a number of years. He joined Commercials Cricket Club under the aegis of Stanger and District Cricket Union before moving to Dawnheights in the domestic league. He went on to play for Flipside and made his debut forMorningsideCricketClubtwoyearsagointhe Ilembe Cricket Union in 2011. He represents Morningside in Twenty-20 competition and 50 Overs League.

His passion for the game was evident when he enrolled to write the Cricket South Africa level C umpires in 2010 and passed the practical and theoretical examination with flying colours. In 2012 he attended a week long coaching course at the Sahara Kingsmead Stadium and was over the moon after attaining his level 1 coaching cer-

Subrayan said: "There is a lack of youth coming through the development ranks and thus the need for the Ilembe Coaching Academy. Players from young as 11 will be offered expert coaching every Saturday at the Country Club Ground. Talented players especially those in the secondary school ranks will be introduced to the Dolphins Academy where they will be given advanced coaching and a stint with the KZN Dolphins outfit".

Subrayan also wants to focus on mini-cricket at primary school level targeting both boys and girls in the 7-10 years category. Pupils will be taught the basics of mini-cricket, including catching, fielding and bowling before a mini cricket league is initiated. The mini-cricket coaching is envisaged to take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays at Manor Primary School from 3pm to 4.30pm. Those interested in mini cricket are requested to meet at the Manor Primary Ground at 3pm on Thursday.

Mixed fortunes for Warriors Sport WEEKLY REPORTER THERE were mixed fortunes for Warriors Sport in their Ilembe Cricket Union double header clash played over the weekend.

On Saturday they trounced minnows Manor 'C' by 9wickets in a domestic Twenty20 League game played at the Gledhow Ground, but on Sunday,theywereonthereceiving end after they slumped to a 5wickets defeat at the hands of Magnum in 50-Overs League at the same venue. On Saturday, Manor batted first and posted a dismal 55 runs all out in 19.5 overs with Zamir Maraj (12) the only batsman to notch up double digits.

Martin Naicker (3/8 from 4 overs) and Aden Munsamy (3/15 from 4 overs) claimed three wickets each.

Mujahed Ahmed (27 not out) and Keagan Govender (13 not out) guided Warriors to an emphatic 9-wickets victory (56/1) in the 11th over.

On Sunday, Warriors won the toss and elected to bat first.

T Malik and S Ahmad put on a patient 44-runs in the opening 10 overs before Kimon Padayachee dismissed Ahmad for 14 runs in the 11th over.

Despite the loss of four quick wickets, Malik raced to the 43- runs mark and looked in fine mettle before being clean bowled by Liam Luke.

Skipper I Hemraj wrapped up the fragile Warriors tail, claiming 5/17 from 6.3 overs to restrict their rivals to 90 runs.

Chasing 91 runs for victory, the game was evenly poised after Magnum lost three early wickets with only 28 runs on the scoreboard.

Luke (32 not out which included two fours and two sixes) and Calvin Pillay (11 not out) guided Magnum to a fluent 5-wickets victory in 32nd over.

LEDHOW resident Vangie Mari (29), a hard working engineer at Vopak in Durban, swapped her project management job for trekking up Mount Kilimanjaro in December last year.

The former Stanger ML Sultan matriculant made history when she reached the summit of the mountain, bybeingthefirstwomanfromKwaDukuza to have climbed Mount Kilimanjaro.

Mari said: “It was truly a fantastic adventure. The team of local guides was fantastic.

“They carried the bulk of my equipment,fedme,sangtomealongtheway.

We shared stories, tears and laughter,” she said.

Mari, the daughter of Rajen and Padmini of Larkfield added that everyday on the mountain is different, with each day crossing into a completely different climate zone.

“The trek started in a lush rain forest and ended on the boarder of a moorland, with short shrubbery. Day three is a difficult climb through lava rock and boulders with the fourth day

“The fifth day, I started my summit attempt. The temperature was 15 degrees Celsius. The walk was mystical and magical. All the rain on the previous days had completely disappeared.

“My water froze halfway through

the night. It got colder as we ascended and I started to experience the effects of altitude. Headaches and vomiting, loss of appetite and delusion, fatigue and exhaustion. I was blessed to not experience any of these symptoms, except for the loss of apatite, but being a true South African, I had a stash of biltong to get me through the days.

“ThefinalclimatezoneistheGlacial Peak where despite the fact that the mountain is like a volcano, is almost at the equator and is in Africa, giant glaciers have existed since before the first discovery and ascent of the mountain, and continue to exist today.”

Mari went on to say that she did not remember feeling the blistering cold.

I only feel the emotions I felt when I reached camp safely every night. The joy of waking up on the mountain to a steaming cup of hot chocolate while still in my sleeping bag, getting out to the site of the whitest mountain under the bluest sky. Heading into unknown territory, feeling like I was the first to ever walk there or like Frodo on a mission to destroy ‘the ring’ in the fires of Mordor. The tears of joy as I reached the Uhuru peak, the highest point on the highest mountain in Africa.”
