MICHAEL

DUNWELL

I

GOOD EVENING AND WELCOME TO THE MAP GROUP UK STADIUM FOR TONIGHT’S FA CUP GAME AGAINST SHILDON

’d like to start off by welcoming you all back to the MAP Group UK Stadium for the first competitive match in six months. I never thought it’d happen and that we’d have such a break from football to be honest. It took the team a while during pre-season, but in the last two games against South Shields and Whitby Town, we got back to where we want to be at, especially where we finished back in March before football came to a stop. We had a long pre-season, we normally only have four or five weeks, but we’ve had eight or nine this summer, so it took a while to get the players motivated, we saw it in the pre-season games, but in the last couple of weeks they’ve really hit the ground running and got back to where they were last season. It is a bit strange to have football back, but also because we aren’t allowed to have more than an allocated number of fans in the ground too. It is a bit difficult, but it is just good to have fans back. Those first three pre-season games were more like training games because there was none or very little fans in. The pace wasn’t there, but the last two games, especially at Whitby with there being 300 fans and on a good pitch, it was a good game and the players stepped up to that. They’ve done that over the last few performances and hopefully that’s a good sign of what’s to come, especially for tonight’s match. In those two games, we saw a lot more work rate compared to the other games, we were getting the ball forward a lot quicker. We worked on that in the sessions before the South Shields and Whitby games. In and out stockton_townfc

Anchors TV

“IF YOU PRIORITISE ONE COMPETITION, YOU LOSE THAT CONTINUITY OF WINNING GAMES, SO WE WANT TO WIN EVERY GAME.” of play, the players were working a lot harder and that’s just with the fitness coming. They look a lot fitter than what they did at the start, although they did come back in great shape. There’s been some real positives this pre-season, the squad is strong. This is one of the toughest draws we could’ve got in the FA Cup, they were out closest challengers in the league last season. We done well in both games against Shildon last season, won both home and away, so looking at that, we will go into the game with confidence, but it’s a one off cup game, there’s no extra time and no replay’s this year, straight to penalties. We haven’t been in this competition for that many years, so it’s a special one for us. Last year we had a great run in it and we were unlucky to get beat of Guiseley, who were three or four leagues above us. We were unlucky not to take it back to a replay, but we had some good away days. We played away at Liversedge and I think we took four or five coaches down there and the same with Guiseley. Although the fans might not be able to do that anytime soon, if we get through then we’ll be playing against Billingham Town away. Winning breeds confidence and we are going into every game wanting to win.

NATHAN MULLIGAN AIMING TO MAKE AN IMPACT DURING IMPORTANT SEASON

A

nchors midfielder Nathan Mulligan is relishing his role as the experienced member of the squad. Mulligan enjoyed a great pre-season with four goals in five matches, including a brace in a 4-1 win over South Shields. Speaking after the Whitby game, Mulligan said: “It’s been a good pre-season for me.” “I’ve kept myself ticking over the lockdown period to come back to pre-season fit as I can.” “Being the oldest in the team I’ve got to look after myself.” On whether he feels responsibility as the oldest,

the ex-Boro youth player said: “Absolutely, we have got some senior lads around the thirty mark.” “We’ve got a good spine of experienced lads in there, “But as the experienced one, it’s good.” Following a productive preseason, attention turns to tonight’s FA Cup tie with Shildon. On the game, Mulligan said: “We’ve given ourselves the best opportunity, “Our morale is very high and it’s good to go into the Shildon after back-to-back wins against two very really good sides.”

YOUNG ANCHORS DRAWN AT HOME AGAINST CARLISLE CITY IN FA YOUTH CUP

T

he Under-18s kick off their FA Youth Cup campaign next Tuesday when they host Carlisle City in the Preliminary Round of the competition. They are under in a new coach in Liam Cox and the prospect of the Youth Cup is a new challenge for a lot of the players. Cox said: “It’s a massive competition and something that all the lads are excited for.” “Even though it’s only the Youth Cup, it’s still hugely prestigious competition.” The under-18s have seen their

pre-season campaign majorly impacted by the pandemic with four pre-season friendlies cancelled. Last season saw the Anchors beat Chester-Le-Street to win their first Youth Cup game before succumbing to North Shields 4-2 at home. “For us to have a home game first up is brilliant and hopefully we can try to do a little bit better than last season,” Cox told the media team. Kick-off is at 19.45 on Tuesday 8th September and entry details can be found on the website in the coming days.

DALE MULLIGAN Dale Mulligan has returned to Stockton Town after leaving Shildon at the end of last season. Ahead of the FA Cup tie against his former club, Dale spoke to us to give his thoughts on a variety of topics. When asked his feelings on returning to the Anchors, Dale revealed: “It’s brilliant, I feel right at home, back with my home town club, I know all the lads, it’s a great set up here, it just feels brilliant to be back.”Pre-season training began back in early July and the centre-back revealed it was hard coming back after nearly four months away: “It was hard work, the lads are all professional, everyone kept themselves right, the standard was high straight from the offset. It was definitely strange coming back from a long layoff but it’s really good to be back.”

8 //

stockton_townfc

Anchors TV

// 9

Dale also gave his thoughts on performances throughout pre-season: “Performance levels weren’t great to start, but it was just rust I think, the last two games have been outstanding, exactly what the Stockton teams we all know against two high level teams, they were brilliant, so it has put us in great stead going into the Shildon game.” All leagues below Step Three in the National Pyramid were null-and-void due to the Covid-19 pandemic last season, Dale expressed his disappointment at that decision: “It was really hard to take, I think the fairest way would have been the points per game system, but at the end of the day the powers that be make them decisions and we’ve just got to get on with it, a lot of hard work went to waste, a lot of clubs money but it’s out of our hands so we’ve just got to get on with it.” Moving forward from the disappointment of last season, Dale believes the mentality in the dressing room is well equipped to move on: “Absolutely, everyone’s chomping at the bit to play and especially the last two games have put us at the forefront to go and do exactly the same as what Stockton did last year.” “The lads are all ready, the coaching staff too, it will be great to get the fans back in and just get back to normality and get back to business.” On his return home from Shildon, and the direction the club is taking: “As soon as I left Shildon, Michael Dunwell spoke to me and said don’t make any decisions yet, we will have a chat. As soon as I knew there was half a sniff of coming back, it was

10 //

stockton.townfc

the only decision I wanted to make. It’s right for me, my family and everything, it’s perfect.” “The club is going in the right direction, the set-up is perfect, Martin Hillerby has done a cracking job of getting the club to where it’s at, a lot of hard work goes in behind closed doors, it’s exactly where I want to be.” On his first game back at Stockton being his former club: “Great set of lads at Shildon, the dressing room is fantastic over there, I’ve got a lot of friends over there. You couldn’t write it really that our first game would be against them, but at the end of the day you’ve just got to get down to business and we’ve got to beat what’s in front of us and they’re a very good outfit, very, very good but I think we’ve got a good chance of beating them and going into the next round.” On the platform for the season, with stockton_townfc

Anchors TV

four home games in the first month, and fans being allowed back into non-league grounds: “Absolutely, get a couple of wins under our belt to steady us into the season, there’s no easy games in the Northern League there really isn’t. Teams are going to come here and they’re going to make it difficult for us to break down, they’re going to want to get behind the ball because we’re a good side and that’s going to be difficult. We have to find a way of breaking through those teams.” “The Stockton fans are outstanding, they had the highest average home attendance throughout last season, they really do give the lads a lift going into games.”

irst-half goals from Michael Roberts and Nathan Mulligan ensured Stockton Town ended their pre-season campaign on a high with 2-1 victory at Whitby Town. Both sides entered the game on the back of a win. The Anchors had put up an impressive display in a 4-1 win over South Shields, while Whitby had claimed a convincing 4-0 win at Guisborough Town. The wind and rain resulted in a miserable setting for the game. The Stockton fans day was instantly brightened though when they took an early lead after two minutes. A lovely ball from the left by James Risbrough was turned in by Roberts at close range.

Shortly before half-time, Stockton had their second goal of the game when a Max Craggs free-kick from the left pinballed around before Mulligan slotted home. The second half saw a number of changes for Stockton as Dale Mulligan, Jordan Robinson, Fred Woodhouse, Cieran Jackson and Jamie Owens all came on. It took more than twenty minutes for anything noteworthy to happen. Whitby squandered a chance to pull a goal back when Bradley Fewster was played through but he shot straight at Michael Arthur. Whitby pulled a goal back on 70 minutes through a Trialist, but Stockton saw the game through.

POST-MATCH REACTION

MICHAEL DUNWELL: “It’s very pleasing. It was a lovely pitch, but difficult conditions with the wind and the rain. It was difficult for both sides to get the ball down and play a bit. First-half, I thought we were very good, especially on the counter, we broke their play up very well and created quite a few chances. We got the two goals in that first-half and looked comfortable going into half-time.”

OPPOSITION PROFILE

SHILDON AFC

Shildon were Stockton’s closest challengers and were 2nd when the season was declared null and void. They secured twenty wins from their thirty league games. In the FA Cup, they suffered an early exit in the Extra-Preliminary Round as they went out 3-2 at Garforth Town. It looks to be more of the same as they have kept the squad from last season together. Striker Billy Greulich-Smith and midfielder Daniel Craggs remain key players. Defender Alex White was brought in from Whitby but suffered an injury in pre-season. They enjoyed a good pre-season with five wins from their six games. They beat Sunderland West End, Silksworth, Newcastle Blue Star, Willington and Frickley Athletic by an aggregate of 23-1. They were denied a perfect pre-season when they lost 3-1 to Morpeth Town. In their early meetings, Shildon were on top. They won the first three meetings between the clubs. Last season showed the shift when Stockton completed the double with a 1-0 home win and a 2-0 away win.

AWAY DAYS

DATE: 15/09/20 // NORTHERN LEAGUE DIVISION ONE // GROUND: SUNDERLAND LGV PARK

Ryhope. Meadow Park was built after RCA convinced the council to build on some then derelict land in the late 1970s. With help from Sunderland and Tyne and Wear councils, the ground was finally constructed.

SUNDERLAND RCA

DIRECTIONS From the ground, turn right onto Bishopton Road West, turn left at the lights onto Bishopton Avenue. Take the second exit onto the A1027, and follow the road until you reach the A19 slip road and take the first exit. Follow the A19 until you reach the A1018 slip road to Sunderland. At the roundabout, take the second exit onto Stockton Road/A1018. Keep following this road until Beechbrooke, take the first exit onto Beechbrooke and turn right then left and Meadow Park is there.
