Your Letters
Dear Editor,
Dear Editor, Firstly, congratulations on producing the 200th edition of ‘our’ magazine - it is an excellent publication and my first route to finding out what is going on in and around Stotfold. The main reason however for this letter is to ask, why on earth would anybody want to move the library, unless there is a sneaky undisclosed plan to demolish it. Extend it, certainly give it a lick of paint of course - but move it?? The library is in an ideal position near the shops on a main road, everybody knows where it is and it is easily accessible to everyone. With the restrictions we have had to put up with over the last few years I quite believe the footfall has decreased but for pities sake LEAVE IT WHERE IT IS. IF IT AIN’T BROKE WHY FIX IT? A concerned Stotfold resident.

Congratulations on your 200th edition! I read with interest the regular update from Stotfold FC and it’s great to see them doing so well at all levels. They all play some great football and are well worth watching. However, although I’m not an officer of the club, neither do I have any family connection with the team, I thought I’d take it upon myself to inform your readers about Stotfold Ladies FC, who come under the Stotfold Juniors umbrella despite being an adult team. They play in Division 2 of the Bedfordshire & Hertfordshire Women’s Football League and proudly fly the flag for women’s football in Stotfold in both those counties. Like almost all women’s teams at that level they pay to play, unlike their male counterparts, and play their home games at various locations - Hitchin Road Recreation Ground, Arlesey Road Recreation Ground and, very rarely, at New Roker Park, although it is a bit of a mystery to us regular supporters why, when they’re playing at Arlesey Road, the stadium, which is next door, is empty despite the club insisting, so I understand, it’s not available. It would be nice to be able to watch them sheltered from the wind and rain! Matches kick off at 2:00pm and when they play at Arlesey Road, the clubhouse at New Roker Park is usually open for hot drinks - or something stronger if needed when it’s too cold. As I write, at the end of November 2021, they are 6th in a league of 10 teams, having played six games, winning two, drawing two and with only one defeat. Unfortunately I’m unable to tell you the January fixtures as they are published on a month by month basis but games are usually notified on the team’s Twitter page. There’s no charge to watch, all costs being met by the players themselves and any sponsorship money they are able to raise. So if you’re walking the dog or want to walk off your Sunday lunch why not come and cheer the ladies on? They’re a dedicated group of players who give it their all week in, week out for our town and deserve all the support they can get. Kind regards,

Your Letters Dear Editor,
Community Christmas Fayre 2021 Held on Saturday 20th November this was the ninth time the Fayre has been held to welcome in the Christmas period while at the same time raising funds to help local youth groups provide equipment and activities throughout the year. This year the chosen group was the newly founded J‘ ust Out’ drop in youth club, active on Wednesday & Thursday evenings at the Roecroft Centre in Church Road. Thanks once again go to the fantastic bunch of volunteer helpers who give their time throughout the year and on the day of the event as well as local businesses and individuals who gave support both financially or by donating gifts as either raffle or tombola prizes. Our main sponsor and promoter were First Step estate agents who not only donated financially but also gave the magnificent raffle first prize of a food & drink hamper, won by Helen Slater of Stotfold. Stotfold News Magazine supported us once again in promoting the event both in the magazine and on Facebook, thank you very much Joanne! The support of Stotfold Town Council was also appreciated along with all the stallholders and visitors whose contributions allowed us to present the magnificent sum of £1,230.70 to J‘ ust Out’ and we wish them all success in this new venture. Thank you all – Cllr. Alan Cooper, Stotfold Mayor Dear Editor,
Stotfold Good Neighbour group held their Christmas party for the exercise class participants on the 3rd Dec. There was much silliness as 30 clients did their chair based exercises to Christmas music encouraged by an elf or two and some very gorgeous fairies. Stotfold Good Neighbour group wishes everyone a healthy and happy New year!
Dear Editor, We wanted to say a huge thank you to everyone who came down to the Creative Fair held recently at the Roecroft Centre, Stotfold It was such a brilliant day with two halls packed full of wonderful, local creatives and businesses. The support from the local community has really blown us away. It was great to see so many locals brave the cold and shop with these small, local businesses. We both live and work in Stotfold and really wanted to bring something unique with a Christmas fair with products that people would actually want to buy. We look forward to hosting more Creative Fairs in the near future. Follow @stotfoldcreativefair on Instagram for updates. Samantha King and Kristie Furniss

Your Letters Dear Editor, I wanted to personally thank my team of town council staff, our town councillors and resident volunteers who worked so hard to put on a great Christmas Lights Switch On event this year. Every year involves a lot of time and dedication in the months running up to the Switch On event, but this year was especially difficult, taking into account the Covid-19 pandemic and making sure we had measures in place to protect those who attended the event, resulting in a rather different event to previous years … and then there was the weather! As I write this at the beginning of December, we are still selling Stotfold 2022 Calendars (shameless plug! Get yours from the Greenacre Centre for just £6), and we are in the last few weeks of selling our Prize Draw raffle tickets. Between now and Christmas, donation tins will be dotted around the town in some of the town’s shops and businesses, and in the new year we will be able to advise on the total raised for this year’s Christmas Lights Fund campaign. The Christmas Lights Committee and I would also like to thank the following (in no particular order): T&J Seymour Electrical Installations, MJ Ryalls, Saunders Garage, the Stotfold News Magazine , Ringway Jacobs, Greenline Medical Services UK Ltd, Stotfold Mill, Saunders Steam Collection, Gumbles Amusements, Ice Queen Synthetic Ice Rink Hire, Plantscape Ltd, St Mary’s Academy choir, shops and businesses who have donated towards the Christmas Lights Fund and also permitted us to erect lights displays on their buildings, the stall holders who braved the weather for as long as they could, and not forgetting the big man himself – Father Christmas, for reading magical Christmas stories to our younger residents! (If I’ve forgotten someone, please accept my apologies for the oversight! We are grateful to all who played a part in this year’s event!) We also hope that you have enjoyed the slightly extended Christmas Lights display on the High Street, with more of the fantastic solar powered Christmas trees on street lighting columns between the traffic light crossroads to the junction with The Avenue. This was made possible through use of the Government’s Welcome Back Fund. To keep our wonderful displays for future years, and hopefully further enhance them, your support is vital. We welcome donations to the Stotfold Christmas Lights Fund all year round! Kate Elliott-Turner - Town Clerk, Stotfold Town Council

Christmas
Hero 2021
We are delighted to announce the winner of our Stotfold Christmas Hero for 2021!
Together with Satchells Estate Agents, the Stotfold News Magazine are once again proud to present this award to one extra special Christmas Hero from within our local community.
We were astounded at the volume of entries we received again this year and would like to thank everybody that took the time to send in their nominations.
We are delighted to announce that the Stotfold Christmas Hero award for 2021 goes to Natalie Howe from Luna Animal Rescue . Nominated by friend and Luna Rescue fosterer Jo Beazley for her hard work and the endless hours she puts in to Luna. Jo wrote a very touching entry, telling us all about Natalie and the way in which she dedicates her time and Pictured left to right: Kevin Duff of Satchells with Christmas Hero winner Natalie Howe, Daughter Talia and friend Jo Beazley energy to helping rescue animals from within the local community. ‘Natalie has created a ‘Luna family’ that are all fostering, fundraising and helping to improve the lives of so many animals in need’ she went on to say ‘Natalie is role model I am very proud to know.’ Luna Animal Rescue, founded in 2013, helps to re-home animals who find themselves abandoned and without families, in local and national pounds. They have successfully re-homed well over 300 dogs, who are happily living with their new families. Congratulations Natalie, so very well deserved. Runner Up this year for Stotfold was Mollie Jennings. A familiar face in Stotfold, Mollie was nominated for her many, many years dedicated to Stotfold Bowls Club (over 60!) with over thirty of these years serving as Club President. Mollie was nominated by Carol Hanlon and we congratulate Mollie on her award as she steps down from her position as Chairwoman. Well done Mollie for your hard work and dedication to the club. We congratulate all of our winners and our nominees for this year. 2021 has been yet another very strange year for us all- the volume of nominations we received and the wonderful stories we read just go to show how many people within our community are willing to give to others and fully deserve the title of ‘hero’ in many, many ways.
Our Christmas hero winner Natalie received a luxury Christmas hamper to enjoy and a certificate was awarded to our runner up Mollie.
Christmas Hero is sponsored once again by Satchells Estate Agents, Stotfold. The Stotfold Estate Agent at the heart of our community. To contact the Stotfold News Magazine please call 01462 731986

Fabulous Festive
Fun..
Stotfold certainly kicked off Christmas in style this year with several successful events marking the start of the festivities.
Saturday 27th November saw the Stotfold Town Council Light Switch On event defy the adverse weather conditions with many people bracing the wind to enjoy the fun. The indoor skating rink was hugely popular, alongside the storytime with santa and outdoor attractions. Stotfold Mayor Cllr Alan Cooper led the count down to the turning on of the Stotfold Town Council Christmas lights with St Mary’s school choir singing wonderfully to the crowd outside the Greenacre Centre. Storm Arwen certainly didn’t manage to spoil the fun that was had by all. Santa and his helpers at Silverbirch Avenue
The following weekend saw the residents of Silverbirch Avenue hosting their annual resident Christmas Light switch on event with many people joining the street for this favourite Stotfold tradition. A special appearance was made by Santa and his (extremely tall) reindeer as they visited the children and helped Santa in the countdown to the switching on of the Christmas lights. A collection for the NEED PROJECT was held on the evening, with delicious hot mince pies and mulled wine supplied by resident Emma, from Box of Cakes.
The beautiful setting of St Mary’s Church for carols by candlelight
Stotfold Churches together hosted Carols by Torchlight. in St Mary’s churchyard to share the story of the birth of Jesus by singing carols with the Stotfold Salvation Army Band and hearing about the events of that first Christmas from the ‘Open the Book’ team. A beautiful setting we think you will all agree.

Finally we have made it to 2022!
I have taken the opportunity to look back over my thoughts last year and consider the events of 2021, frankly “remarkable” is one of the only words that works. Another year of COVID and as things stand we continue to live with this pandemic. In some ways schools are in the eye of this particular storm, pupils must continue to be educated, schools are by far the best place for this to happen and to provide the broad and balanced pupil experience that they all deserve we must navigate the path between keeping all safe and effectively teaching young people. It is hard to operate in the same way as other parts of society, we cannot simply cancel teaching or work from home if we want to do our job effectively. As I write December is providing the normal grim weather with wind and rain battering the windows. However, as I have reflected in the past Christmas is an amazing time to be in school. Rooms are decorated, carols are being sung and generally a sense of anticipation fills the school. Everyone enjoyed Christmas lunch and Christmas jumper day but this time of year also provides a perfect stimulus for us to consider the plight of many in this country and around the world for whom life has become so difficult. As a school we place a great deal of importance on Ladies Fellowship the need to understand our place in society and in my conversations with our pupils it is 7pm January 17th genuinely amazing to hear them speak so maturely about the environment, the homeless and the HOW DID WE DO? situation for refugees. Sadly these topics continue to dominate our society and it is our responsibility to try to help young people understand what can appear a baffling situation. These are topics that matter and in our continuing drive to ensure our pupils are socially responsible For details of future fellowship these make for important conversations. meetings and events Phone: 01462 01462 730739 Last year I commented on my hope that things would get back to normal, sadly this was not the 10 Church Road, Stotfold, SG5 4LX case. However what we have been able to do is bring together a pupils experience where it feels normal to the pupils. Clubs are running, we have undertaken sporting events against other schools, taken the children on trips and have had visitors into school. All these activities have required additional planning and risk assessments and commitment from staff. NO JOB TOO SMALL We are so fortunate to have a body of staff who recognise the Exterior & Interior Property Maintenance importance of what we do and work to ensure that everything You name it and we’ll do it! possible is done to provide that rich experience for our pupils. Etonbury Academy
It’s been a busy month and Etonbury Academy has been a hive of activity. We have welcomed numerous prospective parents into the school for personal tours with our Principal and Vice-Principal, and to our Open Evening. We were delighted with the response to the evening, and grateful for all the comments we have received from our visitors to the school. Our Year 11s have completed the mock examinations under normal exam conditions and our Year 6s completed their mock SATs. The experience of assessments and formal examinations are never easy for them, but an important part of their learning. Our children have managed these with incredible maturity and determination after such a turbulent year, and we are very proud of their achievements. Our students have taken part in the Central Bedfordshire COP26 competition and designed a Democratree to communicate their thoughts and pledges on environmental issues. The Student Leadership Team are now putting some of their ideas together, and have already created a remembrance garden of wild flowers and poppies.
Positivity and achievements in the school are a real focus in strategic meetings, and also generating some healthy competition between our Heads of Year. Our students are rewarded daily with praise points and weekly with praise texts sent home to their parents and carers on Fridays. We also have Legends of the Week which are shared during their celebration assemblies, and on screens around the school. The children are incredibly responsive to our positive ethos, and all our staff enjoy their conversations in the corridors, dinner queue and form times acknowledging each individual's achievements. We are small enough to know the children, and we really believe this makes us such a successful community. Clubs have been in full swing, and we are delighted to report that our Debate Club made it through to the International Debate Competition finals. Although we didn’t bring home the winning cup, having only been formed in recent weeks it was a fantastic achievement up against hard and experienced competition. Our Junior netballers, Year 9 girls footballers, Year 10 boys footballers, dancers, Boccia players, and musicians are equally performing at the highest levels. Students have ventured out on various trips including our Year 11 Geographers who have been studying the Norfolk coastline and our Language students have visited The Goethe Institut. We have had visitors in to talk to our children about their careers, relaunched The Wadham Project in association with Oxford University to boost Year 10s ambitions and a hands on WW1 workshop. In the new year we will continue to welcome parents/carers in for personal tours, and provided it is safe to do so, we will also be very happy to welcome any of you into the school to take a look around and see the changes for yourselves. Please contact us to arrange this. At the time of writing we are looking forward to the Christmas celebrations with our Christmas Jumper day, Turkey lunch and our Christmas performance. Our Year 5s are also heading off to Cadbury World to learn more about Willy Wonka, and will no doubt be returning with an abundance of chocolate! From all of us at Etonbury Academy, we wish you all a very Happy and Healthy 2022!.

News from Roecroft
Lower School
Welcome to this month’s news from Roecroft Lower School.
I hope you all managed to enjoy some rest over the festive period and got to spend precious time with friends and family. My staff and I feel well rested and ready to start an exciting Spring term in school. We are incredibly hopeful the term isn’t too heavily interrupted by Covid; we will continue to plan a return to a full and eventful school year. If you would like to learn more about our school curriculum, please do visit our website. Each month one of our phase leaders will give you a brief update about the goings on in their Key Stage. Below is an update from Miss Emmerson, who leads Key Stage 1. Wishing you all a Happy New Year, From Mrs Cross and the Roecroft Family. Key Stage 1 Update:
Year 1 and Year 2 had a wonderful end to their Autumn term with all of the Christmas activities in our classrooms. We had a special ‘Christmas Around the World Day’ which involved the children exploring Christmas traditions in different countries such as Sweden, Italy, Germany, England and Norway. We enjoyed decorating gingerbread men, making Christmas cards, snowflakes and creating characters from traditional stories. We also filmed a special Christmas song for our parents and made some Christmas decorations to take home! Now that we have reached the Spring term, we have some new interesting topics to explore. Year 1 will be looking at ‘A Knight’s Tale’ and we have some exciting learning planned around the book ‘How to Catch a Dragon’. This will include making our own maps to find a dragon den and writing a set of instructions to trap our own Roecroft dragon - wish us luck! We will also be making our own moving pictures using a castle background and then adding on levers, wheels and sliders to show characters moving.
In Year 2, we will be exploring the topic ‘Kings and Queens’ by comparing several different monarchs from the past and present. We will be finding out about their lives through non-fiction texts and looking at their similarities and differences. In our art lessons, we will be looking at the artists Isobel Peachy and Hans Holbein and using their work to help us make our own royal portraits. To add to the excitement of our topic, we will also be having a Tudor day to understand what life would have been like and we will be having a banquet to celebrate! All of our curriculum information is available on our website if you would like to see more detail about what we are covering. It is going to be a busy term ahead, but we are excited to explore these new topics, join in with Easter celebrations at the end of the term and welcome some much-needed sunshine!

News from St
Mary’s Academy
We finished 2021 with another 'different' and hectic Christmas!
We thoroughly enjoyed our Christmas lunch, class parties and pantomime even if we didn't have the atmosphere of everyone together in the hall. As with everything we have had to adapt our Christmas Concert around the COVID regulations by filming each class singing their Christmas song within their bubbles and then finishing with the traditional Reception Class Nativity. This will be available to view via Tapestry, Dojo and our website for our families to enjoy. Once again this year, we have really missed having our families in school at this special time.
Despite lockdowns, restrictions, regulations, separation, isolation and home learning challenges all of our staff and children have worked extremely hard and we are really looking forward to a positive and more consistently ‘normal’ 2022. In January our Year 4 children will hopefully be participating in the Young Voices Concert involving over 6000 school children within the O2 London. Such an exciting and fulfilling experience.
We will continue to support the many charities that we do each year. Our children took part in Christmas Jumper Day in aid of Save the Children. We are part of a very generous and caring community and had a fantastic response to our collections last year which included Children in Need, The Royal British Legion, The Need Project, Save the Children and Comic Relief. There has also been continued support for the SMSA fundraising events which all goes to benefit the children in school.
Please remember you can still talk to us if you are applying for a place in our school for September 2022! The deadline for applications through Central Bedfordshire admissions is 15th January 2022 so there is still time to view our virtual tour on the website or pop along for an external tour with our Headteacher. Please look out for our monthly Newsletter here in the Stotfold News Magazine or visit www.stmarysacademystotfold.co.uk for up-coming information and events!

News from Poppies
& Poppyfields Nursery
With the New Year upon us, we would like to take this opportunity to send some thankyou’s to everyone who has helped us throughout 2021.
Firstly, Thank you to our amazing families for their unswerving support and understanding during what has been another very tricky year. We have really enjoyed sharing our time, our conversations, our laughter and our empathy through good times and those a little harder. Without our families, Poppies and Poppyfields would not be such a lovely place to be.
Thank you to local people and organisations who have made donations to our settings. The Meppershall Ladies Knitters, Shay, Deborah and Hazel for knitting dolls blankets and to First Step, for donating the lovely first prize in our raffle (Won by The Page family who would also like to express their thanks at the treats contained in the beautiful boxes!). Also, a huge thank you to the Stimson family (SJS Carpentry Solutions) for building an amazing canopy outdoors at Poppyfields! Thankyou to St Mary’s Academy and Fairfield Park Lower school who we work in close partnership with, for their support. Thanks also to Pippin Pre School for their comradeship during these challenging times. To you all, your relationships with our group are much appreciated! Thank you to the Stotfold News Magazine for keeping us all up-to-date with monthly news! Your magazine is appreciated by us and many, many others!
Finally, Thankyou to my staff team for being so dedicated in their roles under such difficult circumstances. They have made wonderful relationships with their key children and ensured that they have a safe, secure base during their time in our setting. Come rain or shine, they are always there with a smile! Warm wishes to the Stotfold and Fairfield Park communities for the festive period and new year. We look forward to updating you all with our news throughout 2022.

Tree-Cycle and support the Garden House Hospice Is your Christmas tree up and sitting pride of place at home?
As usual the Garden House Hospice are offering their recycling scheme for all real trees in Stotfold and the surrounding areas.
Whether you're someone who puts up a few festive decorations around the house or goes for the full Winter Wonderland approach with decorations and lights galore (and we all know someone that does that!) it's truly a special time of year.
After the joys of Christmas, however, disposing of your tree can be a real chore but this is where the Garden House Hospice can help. What better way to help dispose of your tree properly and help a fantastic cause at the same time. Start the new year hassle-free and sign up to the hospice Christmas Treecycling service today. For the fifth year running, their team of volunteers will travel across Stevenage, North Herts, South Bedfordshire and surrounding areas collecting Christmas trees to recycle in exchange for a donation to the Hospice.
Collections will run between 6th and 10th January 2022 but they encourage you to book ahead to avoid disappointment, as this is an extremely popular service!
The Garden House Hospice provides free specialist palliative care for patients, families and carers facing life limiting illnesses from across North Hertfordshire, Stevenage and towns and villages in Central Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire, serving a population of around 230,000 people. Working with our medical team of highly experienced doctors and nurses, we have specialists in a wide range of roles including complementary physiotherapy, bereavement, occupational therapy, complementary therapy and spiritual care.
Although the Hospice receives some funding they need to raise almost £5 million in charitable income to run these services and greatly rely on the support of the community- local businesses, groups and individuals to help fund their work. Do something special and start the New Year with an extremley good deed by joining in with the 2022 Garden House Hospice Tree-cycle scheme. News from Stotfold
Watermill
A VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU ALL!
Whether you are a member of our many volunteer teams or simply one of the visitors who came to the mill since we re-opened on Sundays in the autumn, we hope you will continue to support and join us in enjoying a very successful and exciting 2022 at Stotfold Mill. We are working very hard during the winter months to not only ensure that that the Mill will once again prove a major visitor attraction when it re-opens next Spring, but also to establish its secure future as a Stotfold community asset.
We ended our year by being able to hold our Annual General Meeting at last which had been delayed by the Covid restrictions for almost 2 years. Our treasurer was able to give reports and financial statements for the years ending December 2019 and 2020. As might be anticipated, whilst the results showed a net income of £26k for 2019, predominantly arising from the May Spring Fair and the Working Steam Weekend in October, held between the lockdowns., by comparison 2020 had only flour sales as a source of income which resulted in a shortfall approaching £33k. Fortunately the Trust continues to hold an adequate balance to ensure the mill can be preserved for a few years yet, even if Omicron or further variants limit our activities. This year’s report should be a little healthier, thanks to a very successful Working Steam Weekend, when the next AGM is held, hopefully in May 2022. The Treasurer ended his report by initiating a discussion on the future of Stotfold Mill, pointing out that many of the leading volunteers and post holders were of an age that the extent of their participation might soon diminish. Although the number of members present was small the discussion was wide-ranging. Whilst no significant conclusion was reached, the overwhelming view was that Stotfold Mill was a community asset and that it was hoped residents would appreciate its value and importance to the town by volunteering their knowledge, skills and time to help secure its future.
Whilst wishing everyone a joyful Christmas and a healthy and happy New Year, we also hope that some of you will find some new fulfilment for 2022 by joining us at Stotfold Mill. Visit stotfoldmill.com/volunteer to make a New Year resolution.

Methodist Church
New Year, New Agreement..
We each may be looking at the new year with hope or dread, with joy or sadness, with positive or negative thoughts. I have hope, especially in the younger generations. But I feel sadness at the unfairness of the deal that young people appear to be left with, as the Western World confesses its sins of greed and carelessness for the rest of humanity and for nature. Recurring regret for past failings or betrayal can also cast a negative shadow over life. At the same time, hope in God’s love can drive that shadow away. January is often a time of resolutions to move our lives in right directions. Across the country, Methodist Church congregations will be using the words of the Covenant Prayer. Covenant means “Agreement”. In the service, we remind each other of the generous deal that God gives humanity through the birth, life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. In this agreement, God forgives our sins of the past and present and offers faith in Christ to enable us to agree to follow God’s way of love for God, neighbour and each other. It is the most solemn and important of all Methodist services, yet joyful in the hope that it brings. It places the believer’s life into God’s hands, for whatever the future will bring, but also holds God to God’s own promises. The Covenant Prayer finishes with: “And now, glorious and blessèd God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, you are mine and I am yours. So be it. And the covenant now made on earth, let it be ratified in heaven. Amen.”* That sounds pretty positive to me! May this New Year mark a new and energising and hopeful agreements for our lives, and for the generations to come.
Stotfold Methodist Church is not holding a coffee morning this month, but hopes to welcome you on the first Saturday of the month, 10am, starting 5th February. Monday Club resumes 10th January, 2pm to 3:30pm. We also welcome you to Sunday worship, 10am to 11am, with refreshments after. Kings Baptist Church & Churches Together Welcome to our January article from Minister Alistair Sanders of King’s Baptist Church.
Author Susan Beaumont says there is a danger of defining this time of disorientation and confusion “in terms of failure or loss…” She says that, when we face uncertainty, we tend to go back to doing the same old thing that we have always done. In the gospel of John, we see Simon Peter doing that— He goes fishing. Fishing is what he has always done. It is where he is most comfortable. It is the most natural thing in the world for him to do. But he forgot that he wasn’t a fisherman anymore.
Another author (Selwyn Hughes) tells us, “There are many times in life when one has to face Beautiful shot of King’s Baptist Church as featured in our Stotfold Calendar for 2022 and captured ambiguity and by Paul Edwards uncertainty. How a person handles the feelings that arise when this takes place will depend on how secure they are in Christ…” The Bible encourages us to turn to God in our struggles: “For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is from him. He only is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be shaken… Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before him; God is a refuge for us.” (Psalm 62:5–8) May you know the comforting presence and the life-changing power of God in your life throughout this new year.

SJFC Girls Under 14’s New Kit Sponsors Stotfold Junior Football Club were proud to host The Stotfold & Arlesey Branch of the Royal British Legion (RBL) at one of their senior matches against Bedford on November 13th. The branch were able to promote their poppy appeal during and after the game. The RBL would like to thank Stotfold FC for enabling them to help promote their fundraising for 2021 and look forward to working together with the club in the near future. The match day itself was extra poignant as the Stotfold FC U14 Girls also used the opportunity to unveil their new Stotfold & Arlesey Branch RBL match strip during an exhibition match at half time.
The Stotfold FC U14 girls match kit was sponsored by the business of branch Poppy Appeal Coordinator and Membership Secretary Mr Phillip Johnys. A special logo was designed for the kits which you can see below. The logo will feature on the girls shirts for the duration of the next season. Phil told the Stotfold News Magazine ”‘I am extremely proud to sponsor the girls kit on behalf of the Stotfold & Arlesey Branch of the RBL and wish the girls the best of luck this season” Phil has chosen to use the RBL logo for the shirts to further promote the charity and to help increase awareness of this fantastic cause and hopes the shirt sponsorship will increase awareness of the local branch membership and activities. Phil wishes it to be clear that no charity donations were used to sponsor the girls kit and all funding came solely from his own consulting business.

News from Stotfold
Art Club Welcome to our latest article - and a very Happy New Year!
Painting with watercolours includes a technique known as " wet -in -wet " which is very difficult to master. Jenny Musselwhite's lovely flower paintings show just how effective this can be.
Jenny has been a member of the Art Group for seventeen years; she has a special interest in painting animals, especially dogs, including her own and those of friends. Pastels and watercolours are her favourite mediums for flower studies and decorative work. . Jenny is well known to visitors to Stotfold Watermill, where she successfully ran the shop for many years.Card making and crafts are also an interest and she sells through the Mill and at our exhibitions. If you are interested in joining our friendly art club, maybe it is a New Year resolution! Simply give us a call on 07734 304590 for further details.

Recipe of the Month - Cosy Cottage Pie Brought to you by Slimming World, Stotfold.
Serves 4, Free - Ready in 45 minutes
500g Lean beef mince (5% fat or less) 750g mixed casserole veg or casserole veg pack 450ml boiling beef stock 1kg floury potatoes, peeled and roughly chopped 2 leeks, thinly sliced
1.Spray a large non-stick pan with low-calorie cooking spray. Place over a medium heat, add the beef and brown for about 5 minutes, breaking up any lumps with the back of a wooden spoon. Drain off any fat. 2. If you're using a casserole veg pack with whole vegetables, peel and chop the veg. Add the casserole veg to the pan along with the stock. Bring to the boil over a high heat, stirring occasionally, then reduce the heat to low, cover and simmer for 30 minutes. 3. Meanwhile, cook the potatoes in a saucepan of boiling water over a high heat for 12 minutes or until just tender. Add the leeks and cook for a further 4-5 minutes. Drain well, tip back into the saucepan and leave to stream for a few minutes to drive off any excess moisture. 4. Mash well and season to taste. 5. Uncover the beef, bring to the boil over a high heat and cook for 5 minutes to reduce any liquid to a nice coating consistency Season to taste. Preheat the grill to hot. 6. Tip the beef mixture into a 1.5 litre ovenproof dish, spoon over the mash to cover completely, smooth with a fork. Spray with low-calorie cooking spray and grill for 3-4 minutes or until golden.

Police and Crime Commissioner Dear Stotfold residents.
Since being elected, I have met with over 100 Town and Parish Councils online, attended four Parish Council meetings, and a Full Council meeting at each of our three local authorities. In addition to my weekly visit to commissioned partners and organisations, I have held six Community Engagement meetings across the county so far and been on patrol duties with our officers.
At a recent Annual Parish Council meeting organised by my office, which was attended by Senior Leadership Team from Bedfordshire Police, I shared the following with councillors:
Police and Crime Commissioner Festus Akinbusoye
Community Policing Plan As part of my Police and Crime Plan, priority number one is ‘investment in community-based and community-led policing for rural and urban areas’. Together, the Chief Constable Garry Forsyth and I are committed to focussing on ‘proactive policing’. Residents have told me they want to see more of a visible, proactive, problem-solving police presence in our communities. It is therefore my responsibility to hold the Chief Constable accountable for delivering on the people’s policing priorities. In response to this, we have agreed to increase the number of our Community Policing Team in Bedfordshire to:

67 Community Police Officers - 51 PCSOs - 14 Sergeants
The focus will be on the officers being visible, proactive, and dedicated to their local areas. I recognise there is still more to do in tackling speeding, drug dealing and anti-social behaviour. However, I need to ask your help in continuing to provide us with data and activity about crimes. This helps with the deployment of officers. To report a crime, you can do so by calling 101 or anonymously by contacting Crimestoppers.
We are also now recruiting for Community Special Constables. These are volunteer police officers who will be trained and deployed to carry out policing duties in their local area.

Early intervention and prevention
A big focus of mine is early intervention. One of my campaign pledges was to roll out ‘Out of Court Disposal Orders’ which allow officers to refer low risk, persistent offenders to local support services.
What this means is, we keep persistent offenders outside of the criminal justice system while referring them to support services to deal with issues such as drug and alcohol addiction as a condition of the order. Since launching this, I am pleased to say 100% of those referred so far have not re-offended since the scheme started. This frees up police time, saves tax-payers money and reduces repeat victimisation of our residents. I’ve also been spending lots of time at schools across the county and have weekly visits in my diary. I believe it is important for young people to have a positive understanding about policing and know that they have power to make positive choices. Due to recent covid guidelines from Local Authorities, we have postponed our inaugural Bedfordshire-wide schools debating competition to early 2022. The competition is for 15–18-year-olds. This will create opportunities for developing confidence, critical thinking, and life skills. Plans are also well under way for the Summer of Fun 2022 initiative which is part of investing in early intervention programmes to safeguard our young people, encourage healthy choices and improve self-esteem. I am also investing money to tackle domestic abuse and sexual violence by focussing on perpetrators, while changing the narrative from advising victims on personal safety.
Force Control room I am working with the Force to invest in the effectiveness of the Force Control Room. They are the first point of contact along with the Community Policing team. We’ve recruited nine new members recently with almost 20 police officers providing expert support. By April 2022 we will be above our establishment level for the first time in several years. I will be reviewing this towards the end of the financial year to see what more can be done to improve retention and quality of service to the public. Speed Watch volunteers Our speed watch team is currently looking for more volunteers. Speed Watch is a fantastic, educational scheme aimed at raising awareness of speed restrictions and road safety. Those captured speeding receive a warning letter from Bedfordshire Police and persistent offenders’ details are passed to our local policing team for further action. If you’re interested, you can email WatchSchemes@bedfordshire.pnn.police.uk
I remain optimistic about the future of Bedfordshire Police and our plans to cut crime, prevent harm, and protect victims. Our concerted effort on tackling crime as well as its root All types of electrical work undertaken. causes will pay off.
As ever, if you’d like to get in touch, you can contact my office by calling 01234 842064 or by emailing pcc@bedfordshire.pnn.police.uk Wishing you all a safe and prosperous New Year. Festus Akinbusoye Police and Crime Commissioner – Bedfordshire
