From the Editor From the Editor Welcome to June.
What a busy month! As we write this month’s column we have just returned form a very sunny and busy Stotfold Mill weekend. With almost 11,000 people through the gates, the event was a huge success! - Congratulations to all involved. You’ll find a few snaps of the weekend on pages 4 & 5 of this month’s issue. Thank you to everyone that took the time to stop by for a chat or to enter our photography competition. We are delighted to announce that the winner (who incidentally also performed a brilliant live set at the Mill event on Saturday) was Sam Gifford. We think you will agree it really is a stunning sunset shot of the event in early evening. Congratulations Sam! The old photograph we chose last month caused quite a stir, as we have received so many messages with regards to the old tin hut building along Hitchin Road. Thank you to Alan Cooper for fillling in all of the gaps with his letter featured on page 9. It was fascinating to hear all the stories from both Mr Larkin and Mr Dear as they recall being sent to the shop for new trousers or a haircut (or both!) This shot of the Jubilee display at Days Bakery has been sent in by Ilona Clifton - we are only sorry we cannot include a larger version! A full rundown of some local and national Platinum Jubilee Events can be found on pages 6 & 7 of this month’s magazine. We hope you enjoy celebrating this incredible milestone. Until next month... Joanne

Incredible entertainment inside this year’s arena included thrilling stunts from Flyin’ Ryan, sheepish antics in the The Lamb National, the traditional Steam Parade, Gifford Dance Academy, the sheep dog show - and much more.
Compared throughout the weekend expertly by Pat Clarey, the arena really was alive with fun and entertainment. Thank you to all of the local community stalls that lined the Mill entrance, providing interesting things to do and see. The most important visitor during the weekend however was indeed the sunshine, (who after a rocky start on the Saturday) kept spirits up and ensured maximum attendance throughout!

Your Letters Dear Editor, The Elemosynary Charity of William Field. Applications are invited from both individuals and local voluntary organisations for a grant that will directly benefit a resident or residents in the ecclesiastical parish of Stotfold, which includes Fairfield. Application forms are available by email from the Clerk to the Trustees jbillson@virginmedia.com or from 17 Pix Road, Stotfold, Herts SG5 4HY. Completed applications to be returned by 30th June at the latest. Dear Editor,
Dear Editor, I have recently used two local companies, Stotfold Fencing and The Stotfold Gardener and would like to highly recommend both. They responded quickly to my enquiries, provided very reasonable quotes and both did a great job. I would like to thank them both and wouldn’t hesitate to use them again. Steph Jacobs.
Dear Editor, I would like to say a huge well done to everyone connected with Stotfold Mill for once again giving us a most fantastic event for the May Fayre. - Possibly even bigger and better than ever before!! Well done to you all! Well done also to your magazine for providing the brilliant coverage of the event too! Melanie Cheney Editors note: Thank you Melanie, we had a great
weekend and echo your thanks to all involved!
I would like to thank everybody that kindly supported our Jumble Sale at St Mary’s Church Hall back in April. The hall was full to capacity with excellent jumble, with visitors coming from far and wide. We were delighted to raise over £1,000 for Cancer Research. Special thanks to Dennisons House Clearance and to Satchells for their support and to everyone who helped advertise the event. Chris Webster.
Dear Editor, I thought you would like to share these photographs with your readers as it shows the same view over a span of over 100 years. The first being taken in the 1900s, second in the 1960’s and third in present day. Mr Box, Hitchin Rd.
Dear Editor, I’ve just had my drive cleaned by a local company ‘We clean drives’. I have several heavy pots which they moved carefully for me, and they cleaned the house front and windows after jet spraying the drive. When they came the next day to re-sand the drive, they were not satisfied with the cleanliness and re-cleaned it. To be honest I thought it was good the first time, but they wanted it improved! I would certainly recommend!

Your Letters Dear Editor, I am the "stranger" that Terri wrote a letter about in the May edition. A bit of a story, but the short version is, that I did have a minor mishap. It was a surprise for me to have to spend three days in hospital and have an operation on my hand as a result. Terri has nothing to apologise for, as I would do it all again. In fact, she has proved to be a very nice person in her efforts to try and find out who I am. The good news is that she "found" me at the recent fair on Stotfold Green. We have both found new friends.............The end..
Professional Gardener
Kind Regards, Chris Hall Dear Editor, I'm sure you will get several responses to your request for information regarding the old photo in the May magazine but I will give you what information I have to fill any gaps. Edgar (Eggar) Saunderson was a tailor/barber/tobacconist and the tin bodied shop was in the position where the much newer No.7 Hitchin Road now stands. In the 1968 Stotfold Directory No.7 is listed as Jon's Gentlemen's Hairdresser/County Library/Medical Centre/Police Station, all as one site! In the 1983 Stotfold Directory No.7 is listed as Lilley, C.W.(greengrocer)/County Library/Medical Centre/Police Station(Wadlow, C.)

Shortly after the retirement/death of Eggar (died 1961 aged 80) the tin bodied shop was taken over by the infamous local councillor James (Jimmy) Hallworth (died 1966 aged 66), a 'tobacco wholesaler' and renown ice cream maker who was possibly already the owner, and replaced by a brick building to become the Jon's for Home and Business with a personal touch Gentlemen's Hairdresser salon already mentioned. Jon (John) Hallworth was the son of Jimmy and worked alongside Just like having your very own Douglas Howard in the salon for several years. I.T. department at the end of the phone! A number of years later the salon, more recently run by Douglas Howard, was relocated alongside the Folly Tobacco Stores at 15 Hitchin Road, presently a dog grooming parlour and gentlemen's hairdresser. At the original site and to the rear of the building local council groundkeeper Tony Beresford turned undertaker had, for a short period, a 'Chapel of Rest' where bodies were laid out prior to burial. The front part of the shop was also used for the breeding of tropical fish but I do not know who's business that was. If the lady in the centre was Eggar's wife Louisa Elizabeth who died in 1941 then the photograph would have been taken prior to that. If it's not her then a possibility is that it could be Winifred Tuckey (born 1910), sister of local carpenter/glazier Cecil Tuckey, she lived nearby and helped out in the shop. Best regards Alan Cooper

Pre School
We supported the Stotfold Mill Steam and Country Fayre last month with our sweetie tombola, glitter tattoos and guess the name of the dog! Although the day began with a shower, the sun came out for the afternoon and we raised an incredible £400. We are currently fundraising to purchase a defibulator for our nursery, this is a healthy amount towards our £1200 target. We wish to thank our parents for their donations to enable us to have a successful stall and we would also like to thank everyone who stopped by on the day to support us too. On 20th, 21st and 22nd June we will be supporting the Barnardo Big Toddle. This annual event involves a sponsored walk in our local area. The children will go for a small walk around Greenaces in groups observing the world around them; looking at all the different colour cars, doors and wildlife that are on offer. All sponsorship monies raised goes directly to this worthy charity. For further information please visit www.barnardos.org.uk/bigtoddle.
Our Summer Holiday Club will be open from Monday 25th July until Friday 19th August inclusive, places can be booked from 7th June via members.pippinpreschool.co.uk/login. We are open from 7.45 to 18.00 and charge £38 per day. Spaces are limited and are on a strictly first come first served basis. We are currently collecting bottle tops, old buttons, lace, yogurt pots and old child-friendly magazines for our gluing station, if you have any that you wish to recycle please hand them into the office.
Due to our charitable status we are registered as one of Amazon’s supporters. Please visit smile.amazon and register Pippin Playgroup as your chosen charity. Poppies & Poppyfields Nursery
As warmer weather approaches, we are loving life outdoors! Children are enjoying free-play in our gardens, counting birds and bugs, and looking at life cycles of animals. We have had great fun looking at colours and how to change them by blending, separating and mixing. We have also been exercising! Lots of running, jumping, climbing, crawling which is good practice for our sports day in June at Poppies! Our value ‘courage’ has inspired our young athletes to try new activities and persevere to gain new skills! Our Maths Team have provided lovely ideas for children to learn shape and number, including gathering natural items to match number values, collating ‘loose parts’ play into quantities, ‘Walk and Count’ nature trails, children making their own snack while looking at the shapes of the fruit…and lots more inspiring ways to learn the concept of number and shape through play! We have also been preparing for the Platinum Jubilee Festivities! Our breakfast and after school children have also been making their own snacks, playing with new sports equipment, jubilee activities and fun with paints and crafts! News from Roecroft
Lower School
With only two months of the academic year remaining, it is hard to keep up with how quickly time has flown this year. Especially so in school, mainly due to the reintroduction of many of our missed extracurricular activities. At the end of April, our Year 4 children went on their first residential school trip to Cuffley Camp. This was an amazing experience for them and the first time many of the children had slept away from home! During the day, they took part in a range of adventurous activities such as rock climbing, night line and orienteering and learnt bushcraft skills including how to light and build a fire. The children had a fantastic time sleeping in cosy woodland pods, exploring the acres of woodland, bonding with their friends outside of the classroom and singing around the campfire. We were so proud of the achievements our children made in their time away and how beautifully they lived all their Roecroft values too. Other year groups have enjoyed local visits to the Library, The Mill, and the Airbus Foundation in Stevenage. We are trying to ensure we use local facilities for our trips and visits, not only to financially support these excellent local resources, but also to teach the children about the things they can experience on their doorsteps. In June, our Year 2 children will be visiting Knebworth House, another incredible day out nearby.
This term we have an update from our EYFS team: In Reception, our topic this term is 'Once Upon a Time...' and we will be spending the term reading and finding out about lots of different books and stories. We have already read ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’, written a set of instructions and planted our own beans. We are now looking after them and observing the changes as they grow. We then looked at ‘Handa's Surprise’ which is about a little girl who lives in a village in Kenya who wants to surprise her friends with some delicious fruit. We loved writing letters to our friends when we read ‘The Jolly Postman’ story and enjoyed walking Cuffley Camp provided much fun for all! to the post box to post them and waiting for them to be delivered. We also loved the story ‘There's a Superhero in Your Book’ and looking at BUYING OR SELLING old and new superheroes, as well as ‘The Gingerbread Man.’ At the end of the half term, we had our exciting visit to Stotfold Library. Over the remainder of this term, we will be continuing to look at lots of different books and stories as well as getting ready for ourtransition into Year 1. With warmest wishes, Mrs Cross

May proved to be a busy month for us starting with the whole school skipping workshop which was great fun as well as keeping us all active! Most of our Year 4 children had the very exciting and special experience of participating in the Young Voices Concert involving over 6000 school children within the O2 in London. They absolutely loved it! Our Parent’s Association, the SMSA also held a number of fundraising events for our children including the ever popular Sponsored Bounce, Film Nights for all years and the whole school Parents versus Children fun race to see who can run the most laps around our school field. We will report the winners in our July entry! The summer term is now well underway, with June looking as eventful as pre-COVID times.
On Tuesday 7th June we will enjoy an Afternoon Tea, with everyone involved, to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. Each child will also receive a commemorative gift. During the week of 13th to 17th June all years will join in with a St Mary’s children taking part in the Young Voices concert 2022 special Writing event in school with adapted tasks around the same topic. We then hope to display STOTFOLD HOME each year’s accomplishments all together.

They battled through the weekend trekking and sleeping in tents, a huge accomplishment for them all, with many saying they would do it all again! Many of our families have been supporting Central Bedfordshire Council’s Street Tag competition, and during the holidays we won the Semi-Finals! Thank you to everyone supporting us. We are delighted to welcome Mrs Craddock, who has taken up her post with Central Bedfordshire Council as Crossing Patrol on the pedestrian crossing nearest our school. This is a really important role ensuring the safety of our children and others as they walk, cycle and drive past the school during peak times of the day. It’s always good to hear success stories of our past students, and this month we heard about James, who was in our first cohort of students to successfully complete their GCSEs at Etonbury. He has gone on to receive national awards in the food industry and is already destined for even more accolades. James has followed his dreams, and it is hugely uplifting to hear of his success at such a young age and so soon after leaving us. Congratulations to James. If you are an ex-student, we would love to hear your success stories too. It’s GCSE exam season, our students have worked incredibly hard, and shown unwavering resilience throughout these difficult past two years. We wish them every success and look forward to celebrating with them in the Summer.
We have released the Summer Term extra curricular schedule, and as always it’s full of activities for the children to enjoy during lunchtimes and after school. This term we have our whole school production of ‘Matilda’, and hope to open this to as many of the community as possible. It is a wonderful sight to see students from years 5 to 11 supporting and encouraging each other. In sport our Year 7 and 8 girls football team remained unbeaten the whole season, our Juniors won Silver in the County Championships in Dance, and our Year 9 Dance team achieved fourth place. Amazing achievements.
The children joining us in September have now received confirmation of their place and we are busy making plans to ensure their smooth transition. The number of parents and children joining us is a great reflection of our success over these past three years. We have just a few places available for children moving into Secondary (current year 6 into year 7) in September, so please contact us if you are still considering your child’s school on 01462 730391.

The start of another spring term and its once again all go at PBA. This summer term is the first time in the history of the school that we will have reached this point without some direct impact of COVID. Obviously, there are still issues to address but for a school that has been punctuated by lockdowns, bubbles, vaccinations, absence and a whole host of other “difficulties”, to have reached this point in the year with the school operating as it was designed, is fantastic and the fact that we are doing so in such a positive way is a testament to our pupils and staff. The summer term is a great time to be in school. Our PE department continue to offer a whole host of extra-curricular activities, all of which are superbly attended by our pupils. It has been particularly pleasing to see the development of two pupils who are representing the local community on the youth parliament. They are the youngest members and have already undertaken assemblies at school and attended meetings at the council on Saturday mornings. It has been exciting to plan for next September. A large number of new pupils will be joining the school and to see the school grow from 51 pupils in September 2019 to approaching 600 in September 2022 will be fantastic. It is also a relief to have received clarity from the local authority about the changes in age range for the schools in the Stotfold and Shefford area. For PBA this means we will continue to have Year 5 as our intake year until 2025. Beyond that point we will transition to a secondary school. Any change of this scale is not straightforward and for PBA perhaps more so. Over the last two years we have moved into a new building, battled through a pandemic, grown in size hugely and now prepare to transition to a secondary school. Any one of these on its own is challenging, to have these one after another has kept us all busy. What has been gratifying is that with the commitment of staff, enthusiasm of pupils and support of parents we have managed these changes well. Our mission: to educate the socially responsible citizens of the future continues to inspire our work. Working with young people, trying to help them make sense of what can appear to a child (and perhaps an adult) a frightening world is at the foundation of all we do. We now look to the rest of the term to prepare these young people for their futures. We know this is about education in its broadest sense and will continue to help them in that journey.

What a fabulous frantic April with the 1st team winning five of their six league matches and clinching the SSMFL Division 1 Championship and promotion on 12 April with four games to spare. They also won the Beds Senior Trophy defeating Shefford Town and Campton 4-0 in the Final and progressed to the Finals of the SSMFL Gladwish Challenge Trophy and the Division 1 Cup. The Development team also clinched the BCFL Division 1 Championship and promotion. Having already won the SCFYL Nemean Division the U18 team lost their play-off match against a strong Kings Langley team but a great season for the lads. Our thanks to all of our wonderful supporters who have been magnificent this season.
Our thanks also to our hardworking committee who have showcased the facility and made all of our visitors and supporters welcome at our matches. Watermill
What a fantastic weekend….
There can be no doubt that last month’s Steam Fair and Country Show was the most successful ever. Our Major Events team were determined to organise an event to ensure that after two year’s absence would give great value day out for everyone. The public response was overwhelming and thanks to some glorious weather crowds were drawn in from far afield. It can be recognised that the weekend has become a major event on the Bedfordshire attractions calendar that the Stotfold community can be proud of. We hardly dare suggest that we would like to make it even bigger and more successful in the future as to do so would need more volunteers – unless of course you are willing to come forward and help us!
We are pleased to be open to the public again on Sunday afternoons. In June we will be open on 12th and 26th and on every Sunday throughout July. Many of our visitors enjoy afternoon refreshments in Randalls Tearoom and seeing the working mill in action producing flour and porridge oats, but much time can be also be spent viewing the artefacts and displays that have been produced by the Archive team. One item of particular local interest has been the Document of the Week featuring letters from pupils to Sam Randall, the last miller, from pupils at Roecroft School who were shown round the mill in 1979. Did Lisa Myhill and Stephen May, as well as their classmates realise that their letters would be displayed in the mill over 40 years later? Do Lisa and Stephen still live locally? In the display cabinets the Archive group have mounted a fascinating collection of items and information illustrating the transformation of Stotfold from a hamlet in 1700 to our large dormitory town today as well as artifacts relating to the arrival of the railway to the area around 1750. During the recent Steam Fair and Country Show Phil Radford and Ray Kilby mounted a display of the wonderful models of steam ships and vintage vehicles they have created. If you missed seeing this superb exhibition you will have the opportunity to see it again in September when we hope to show it as part of our contribution to the England’s Heritage Day event At the AGM of the Stotfold Mill Preservation Trust Ray Kilby had indicated that he no longer wanted to continue as a trustee as he wishes to focus his time and effort on the work that he does in maintaining and running the mill. Whilst fellow trustees regretted that his contribution to the future planning by the Trust would be missed, they expressed their extreme gratitude that he would be continuing to run the working mill as his role as the miller is essential to achieving the Trust’s objectives. At the same meeting the appointment of Sarah Murdoch as a new trustee was welcomed. There is still scope for more volunteers with an interest in forwarding the aims of the Trust to join as a trustee. If you feel that you are able to make a contribution, please visit our website or contact the Secretary to SMPT at Stotfold Mill, Mill Lane, Stotfold, SG5 4NU. Visitors to the nature reserve might have noticed that a high security fence has been erected on the Baldock Road boundary. This was at considerable expense but it is hoped it will deter unwanted intruders whose late evening revelries have been a nuisance to nearby residents. Teasel have created a natural play area for children in the section behind the car park known as the JohnStan Wood. It is hoped to develop this further and that the bird hide will once more be opened to add to family visitors’ experience. Please do join the many people who enjoy a stroll around this notable community asset. All we ask is that in order to protect the environment and the wildlife, that you do not leave litter and if you are accompanied by a dog that it remains on a lead at all times.

Methodist Church
This June starts with celebrations. On the 3rd day of June, the Queen’s birthday parade and the trooping of the colour will take place in London, and the lighting of the Beacons around the country . The next day, St Paul’s Cathedral will host service of Thanksgiving for the Queen‘s platinum jubilee. On Sunday, the 5th of June, the church celebrates its beginning, Pentecost Sunday, its birthday party. And I know also around the country there will be Jubilee street parties. It is a day to celebrate.
It’s something to be admired when a person commits themselves to service and sticks with it as much as they’re able to. So we celebrate seventy years of faithful service, recognising that our Queen is a person of Christian faith and who readily speaks of her faith. For Christian people, Pentecost is a time when we remember those people who met Jesus, lived life with him, saw his death and witnessed his resurrection, received the Holy Spirit on Pentecost Sunday and then spoke boldly about all that they’d learnt. They gave their lives in service to share that message, eventually writing it down and giving us the Bible so we now can share Christ’s story with one another, bringing new life to many a community around this world. May these examples of service inspire us in the challenges of the days to come. Monday Club continues to extend a warm welcome for new friends, 2pm to 3:30pm every week, with Scrabble and refreshments. News from King’s
Baptist Church
About two years ago, when our nation was in the grip of the first COVID-19 lockdown, people commented that the birds appeared to be singing louder than usual. But the truth is, the birds weren’t singing any differently, but it only seemed that way because the rest of us weren’t making as much noise as usual. With more people at home for most of the time, and with fewer cars on the roads, there was less traffic, less noise, less disturbance. With fewer distractions and fewer interruptions, people began to notice—not what was new—but what had always been there.
Now most of us still fill our lives with noisy activity, and our televisions, computers, and mobile devices give us access to an Internet full of distractions and interruptions twenty-four hours a day. But when we take the time to be quiet, when we can move away from distractions and interruptions, we can hear more clearly the songs of God’s creation. What’s more, we can hear more clearly the voice of God himself. How often do we make the mistake of thinking that God wants us to be frantically, manically, busy all the time?
God reminds us to “Be still, and know that I am God.” Even Jesus repeatedly went away by himself to pray, to be with God. How much more so, then, should we? And Jesus also said, “Come to me, all who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” May we all know the comforting presence and the life-changing power of God.

Stotfold & Astwick Local Plan Following on from previous information provided in this publication, the Stotfold & Astwick Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group would like to reiterate how important it is to receive your views on the development of the town.
Producing a neighbourhood plan provides us with an opportunity to have our say about what we feel is great about the town, and what we might want to further improve or expand on, to enhance our community. As residents we know first-hand what we need and how we can further enhance the lives of our neighbours. Perhaps we want to see more housing for local people, enabling our own children to get on the housing ladder or preserving the woodland and field walks that we are so lucky to have in our town. Enhanced transport links with nearby destinations for social or work purposes could be top of your list? Or is there a need to add to the commercial/industrial/business areas we already have, providing more work opportunities, and allowing us to work closer to our homes? Should we be looking to work more in unity with our neighbours in North Herts - Norton, Baldock, Letchworth? Schooling, do we have enough school place provision for the developments planned in the near future? And if we don’t, where do we see that growth happening? We are now seeing more and more emphasis on our green spaces and people becoming ‘greener’. We have some wonderful areas around the town, such as Etonbury Wood and the Mill Nature Reserve, all joined by the Etonbury Green Wheel, which expands into the other neighbouring communities of Fairfield and Arlesey. The historical character of the town going back many years has been diluted with some of the new developments, so should we be asking to see future developments which encompass the older traditional styles and building practices and looking to the built character of the town? Stotfold isn’t unique in the way it has been developing over recent years; however, the Government’s Localism Act has allowed us to finally play a part in OUR town development. Without our voice the town will evolve without our guidance.
We need your help! Whilst we all have busy lives, we do need to take some time to consider our future, shaping our home and ensuring a legacy for our children. Working on producing our Neighbourhood Plan will benefit the entire community.
Join us and help us to bring that community feeling back to the developing town - this is OUR chance. Contact Stotfold Town Council for further details.
