Hello Friends.....March was an exciting month for our Club. We were honored to host the Green Flag Luncheon prior to the Firestone Grand Prix. It was quite an event with race cars displayed on our front lawn. The luncheon was attended by our Mayor, City Council, Chamber of Commerce officials, sponsors, race car drivers, media and other “movers and shakers”. The sold out Grand Prix Garage Party that Sunday did not disappoint and the new BBQ grille got great reviews!
On St. Patrick’s Day, our tradition of serving our members with a complimentary traditional corned beef and cabbage luncheon was properly honored. Some festive member photos from that day are shared in this issue.
The Winter Lightning Championship was held on March 18th -22nd (more to come about this exciting event in the next newsletter issue). The North Gulf Challenge (Race from SPYC to Pensacola Yacht Club) was held on March 20th -25th. Connie and I enjoyed the opportunity to visit Pensacola Yacht Club for the first time. Kudos to the Pensacola Club for going all out to make all participants feel welcome.
Membership activity continues to be strong. Forty-seven applicants were approved by the Board of Directors at the March meeting. We are quickly closing in on our membership cap of 2,550 members after which applicants will be placed on the waiting list. The initiation fee for regular members is now $15,000 which includes a $2,500 contribution to the capital fund.
The Marina Redevelopment Oversight Committee, under Chairman Fred Higham, has been busy the last month reviewing bids for downtown marina replacement. This ad hoc Committee was appointed by Past Commodore Michael Blacker in 2019. The Committee presented a proposal to replace the downtown docks to the Board of Directors at the March Board meeting. The Board unanimously approved the recommendation. The plan includes all new floating concrete docks, fuel station and pump out facility. The projected start date is this summer with completion anticipated by January 2024.The Master Facilities Planning Committee will be presenting its recommendations to the Board of Directors at the April Board meeting. A complete report will be sent to members following that meeting.
April is anticipated to be a fun month with the Downtown Poker Run on April 1st and the Tall Ships in town until April 2nd. And, of course, the traditional Yacht Club Easter Brunch and Egg Hunt is not to be missed. Hope to see you around the Club.

General Manager’s Log
by: Rhett J. Robicheaux, CCMHow time flies when you are busy and having fun! The past couple months have been jam packed with record event attendance and great execution by the entire team here at the Club. Our team continues to grow due to the volume we are seeing at both clubhouse locations. With that growth we need to be sure we are giving our staff the tools they need to do their jobs well and create a culture for the team to stay intact.
Last month we brought in RCS Hospitality Group, a consulting group that trains in Private Club food and beverage service basics. We conducted a two-day food and beverage boot camp with approximately 100 of our employees in attendance. The boot camp was designed to quickly help our team understand private club service and the proper technical aspects of food service in a fun, engaging way. Topics that were discussed were – What is a private club? Who joins a private club? Why do people join private clubs?
Other topics included consistency/familiarity, member feedback, professional conduct, understanding demographics at a club, the art of enchanted service and the four basic needs of a member: 1) To feel welcome, 2) To feel comfortable, 3) To feel important and, 4) To feel understood. It was very rewarding watching our team members having fun and engaging in this awesome training session.
I would like to give you a brief update on the implementation of our new Electronic Garage Arms. We have created a checklist of things required before we go live; including new signage, complete back-end program implementation, member information, guest information, video tutorials, and valet services. Once we have all the checklist items locked down, we will then begin the process of issuing the new parking decals at the Front Desk of the Downtown Clubhouse beginning Spring 2023. Decals will not be mailed. The 2023 parking decals must be displayed on your vehicle no later than Tuesday, August 1, 2023, which will be our official "go live" date. More detailed information will be coming out very soon in a special parking email.
In closing, we have come a long way over the last year and a half – the completion of the Strategic Plan to the Master Plan is closing in, and our Dock Replacement Project is about to become a reality. Membership is up and approaching a wait list and usage at the Club is increased in all areas. Commodore Smith has so eloquently updated the state of each of the above projects in a little more detail in his article, as we are committed to transparency and keeping the membership informed. The future is looking very bright for SPYC and excitement is in the air.....stay tuned as there is more to come. I look forward to seeing everyone around one of our various facilities!

A Nautical Heritage
Yachting Awards & Recognition
The first SPYC Yachting Recognition Awards Ceremony , held in 1971, was a gala affair attended by 200 members. Certificates of Appreciation were presented to members who had distinguished themselves during the preceding twelve months in national or international yachting competition, race management or administration.
In making the award presentations, Commodore Earl Fox stated that it was his hope and intent that this Awards Party would become an annual tradition. Though an awards party was inadvertently overlooked in 1972, Commodore “Kell” Hennessy resurrected the event, and it has been an annual affair ever since. Since 1996 a compilation of each year’s award recipients is listed on a document referred to as a RESOLUTION and exhibited in the main lobby. After a year, the Resolution is hung in the Hall of Champions display outside the SPYC offices.
SPECIAL AWARDS were presented from 1976 to 1984: 1976 to Allison Blair Jolly recipient of the Haig & Haig Trophy as “Yachtswoman of the Year"; 1978 to PC Lawrence J. [Kell] Hennessey recipient of the Martini & Rossi National Cruiser Championship Trophy and to PC Ted Tolson recipient of the Nathanael G. Herreshoff Trophy; 1979 to PC Thomas R. Downs for his dedication to SPYC’s ocean racing; 1982 to John L. [Jack] Powell (s/v Paper Tiger & Salty Tiger ) for his decades of service and contributions to yachting; 1984 to PC Robert E. “Bob” Lee originator of the annual fishing tournament.
The most recent additions were in 2021 to: Richard H. [Dick] Funsch for decades of service to the Club as well as chronicling the history of the Club from 1909 to 1989; Gene Hinkel for achievements throughout the world on behalf of disabled sailors and sailing; and Philip Edward [Ed] Baird for contributions to the Club and achievements in the world of sailing – induction in 2016 to the Sailing Hall of Fame and the America’s Cup Hall of Fame in 2021. Adult Racing Classes
Designed to be an introduction to racing for sailors with previous sailing experience. Previous experience is mandatory to attend. These classes are a 4 part series in Ideal 18s, with a coach in the powerboat. Students will meet over the course of 2 weeks on Monday and Wednesday evenings, rain or shine.
Sailors will learn about racing through on the water and classroom training. Prerequisite: Active Ideal 18 Rating

A Sailing Center sailboat rating, and a SPYC (or SPSC) Membership is required to attend this course.

On February 28, 2023, over 300 friends and family came together to celebrate the life, accomplishments and contributions of the late Charles E. [Charley] Morgan, Jr ., SPYC member since 1946. The atmosphere was one of a homecoming reunion— full of good cheer and fond remembrances. A panel of ten men—life-long friends, employees, sailing buddies, business colleagues, and in more than a few cases all of the above—gave testimonials to Charley’s character, commitment, loyalty, and to his fervor of all things nautical. ½ Avocado diced
½ lb Rock Shrimp or Salad
Shrimp cooked
½ lb Bay Scallops cooked
½ lb Jumbo Lump Crabmeat
1 cup Clamato juice
¼ cup Heinz Chili Sauce
3 Tbsp. Fresh Lime Juice
3 Tbsp. EVOO
Tortilla Chips for serving
COOKING DIRECTIONS
Carefully mix all ingredients (except Avocado) together and serve in chilled hurricane or cocktail glass.
Garnish with Avocado and serve with warm Tortilla Chips - enjoy!

CRUISING FLEET
February was another busy month for the Cruising Fleet. Thirty boats cruised to Carlouel Yacht Club split into three groups so that everyone could participate. Cruises were scheduled for Wednesday to Friday so as not to interfere with Carlouel’s busy weekends. Fortunately, the weather was gorgeous for all three cruises. Many thanks to Port Directors Pam & Garry Haas, Juli & Bob Frazee and Barbara & Heber Weller for organizing dining and activities. Highlights included celebrating Garry’s birthday with cake around the firepits, walks along the beach all the way to Caladesi State Park (8 miles round trip) and through the local neighborhoods, kayaking, dinghy rides, swimming in the heated pool, croquet tournament won by Martha Monfried, docktails aboard the Roddey’s Wheel Estate (always a treat!), watching the sunset from the Randolph Room overlooking the Gulf and sunrises over the intracoastal. It does not get much better than this!
The nice February weather continued and 34 turned out for the Day Tripper’s lunch at the recently renamed Red, White & Booze (previously Sea Critters) on Pass-a-Grille at the end of the month. Once again, great times with friends new and old! Our March 2nd luncheon featured local authors, Peggy Donoho and Ron Prouty, discussing their book “Miguel’s Bay” and the history of some of our cruising grounds around Terra Ceia Island. March also included a swap with the Naples YC fleet and another DayTripper’s gathering. And, as this issue comes to you, we will be in the midst of the Tall Ship’s Festival as well as a cruise to downtown Tampa to see the Lightning!
Looking forward, April 6th will be our kickoff dinner for our 2023 Commodore’s Cruise scheduled for April 14th-30th. Commodore Smith will carry on the tradition of addressing the Fleet at our kickoff dinner, providing an update on the Club, and wishing us well as 34 boats embark on our voyages. Cruisers are taking various routes to Captiva, Key West and even east across the Okeechobee Waterway with most rendezvousing back at SPYC for a weekend celebration of our long-serving downtown docks including the Dock Blowout & Keywest Street Party on Saturday, April 29th!

Eleven Wing Shooters returned to Boggy Pond in early February for another quail hunting trip. See the May 2022 issue of Smooth sailing for an introduction to Boggy Pond. Once again the staff at Boggy Pond took good care of us. We immediately noticed a few improvements in our rustic accommodations. The carpet in in the guest houses had been replaced with new wood floors. That was significant. All of the showers, at least in the house where I stayed, had hot water. That’s enough about the housing. Any trip to Boggy is best remembered as hunting and target shooting trip. This year we had great weather, plenty of birds, both quail and chucker, well trained dogs and great guides. The highlight this year was the target shooting off the dock. The dock had been upgraded with a second wobble trap, new decking and much better flotation. The rocking motion of last year was gone. We had four guys standing abreast, two on one side of the trap and two on the other, all shooting at the same clay target. You had to be quick or there was nothing left to shoot. In many instances multiple shots were fired at the same micro second and there was no way to know who actually broke the clay. Most likely, they all did.

by Dr. Patsy Warmack, PresidentApril 6th: Dr. John Lenhart, When Putin was a Friend of St. Petersburg College -- Dr. Lenhart will share experiences as part of an educational exchange delegation in 2003 commemorating the centennial of St. Petersburg, Florida with St. Petersburg, Russia. The delegation had access to places that tourists do not normally see. Enjoy this fascinating insight into the relationship during Putin’s early years as president of the Russian Federation.

Its Holy Grail is the Ski Haute Route through the French and Swiss Alps from Chamonix to Zermatt, through some of the most beautiful high mountain-scapes in the world. Some make it through....and some don’t!

G LF GROUP
The Golf Group enjoyed our February 16th outing at Lansbrook Golf Club up in East Lake. Our format each month is a scramble and teams are organized according to handicap and golf experience to even the playing field. We rotate around to a different local course each month.
Recent outings included Bardmoor Golf Club back on March 13th at St. Pete Country Club, with a date to be determined. Stay tuned as we are planning an overnight golf trip later this Spring as well at Howey in the Hills.
Our monthly meetings are held the first Tuesday of each month at 6:00 pm at the Downtown Clubhouse. No meetings are held during the months of June and July or December and January. During our recent February meeting we listened to an engaging talk from guest speaker Michael Puffer from the First Tee of St. Petersburg

RV LAND CRUISERS...Let's Rally & Roll!!
by Angela Kowalik, Wagon MasterOur “Spring Fling” was held March 9th -12th at Keystone Heights RV Resort, a location in northern Florida east of Gainesville. On our first day of arrival (Thursday), we had a brief social before turning it up for our Mexican Fiesta (sans sombreros). Almost endless “hand-crafted” Margaritas and Sangrias were the ultimate ice breakers, followed by flavorful desserts and a cracklin’ fire. The weather turned chilly, what a treat. On Friday, folks ventured out on their own to discover what lay beyond. That evening, we met for dinner at the restaurant next door, Orange Blossoms, for some catching up. On Saturday, more exploring to the flea market, the Gifts and Guns store (where there’s something for everyone), and to other parts unknown. Back at the campground, we met again for another impromptu social of various snacks, followed by some chocolate martinis! Sunday, a farewell breakfast before scattering in all directions.

SALTY Sisters
Co-Captain Valerie Massengill announced the winners of the first Pram Charm series completed this year. First place was PC Barbara Watson, 2nd place went to Katie Rodgers, and 3rd place to Wendy Saks. Valerie also noted that we had 41 women on the water that day in Prams, Ideals, on Race Committee, and Safety Ashore.
After lunch on Wednesday, February 22nd, PC Kathy Ahern gathered a group of volunteers to help with the stuffing of 265 skippers’ bags for the Sailing World’s Largest Regatta Series (Helly Hansen Sailing World Regatta, aka the NOODs.) Co-Captain Valerie Massengill thanked all the volunteers for their help.
March 1st, PC Gina Bowden-Pierce introduced US Sailing National Judge Phil Pape, who led a great educational seminar about Racing Rules of Sailing. He discussed the protest process and how protest hearings take place. Phil gave several examples of situations that involved more than one racing rule and he talked about the need for judges locally.
The Salty Sisters are always proud of our sisters who travel and volunteer for Race Committee in other places around the country. PC Gina Bowden-Pierce and Helle Getz just returned from volunteering at the Nacra 15 Worlds held at the Lauderdale Yacht Club in Fort Lauderdale. They were part the Race Committee staff for that event.
Salty Sisters are looking for a few actively sailing, experienced SPYC women sailors for the Class of 2023 who are ready to engage with our members in sailing and teaching!

BROAD REACHERS
The Broad Reacher’s FWSA Interclub event was quite a “success” with four member clubs participating. With little or no wind, 1st Delegate Gloria Davis came up with a fun and “educational” race. This event involved small colored beach balls, Prams, and sailors willing to paddle to complete the course. The “educational” part of the race involved passing the beach balls from one boat to another in the zone and overlapped. Being first to reach the mark made little or no difference since you needed another sailor to exchange your beach balls. Each sailor rounded the course twice, exchanging balls in the zone and crossing the finish line with different colored balls. It was fun to watch and to photograph.
Gloria thanked her Race Committee and Safety Boat volunteers for their patience during the race. A lot of laughs were had by all.
First place in this event went to Salty Sister Bijie Ding, 2nd place to Emily Kennedy from the Salty Sisters (sailing in her first Interclub), and 3rd place sailing for the Broad Reachers, Katie Rodgers. This year the FWSA is promoting a “Rookie” award for first time Interclub sailors. Chris Poorman from the Clearwater Bowchasers received her first trophy for her first Interclub. Each trophy for this race was a beautiful orchid plant.
