Mikið er gaman að fá þig í Háskóla Íslands! Stúdentaráð hefur beðið spennt eftir þér allt sumarið og útbúið þessa handbók sérstaklega fyrir þig til að kynnast háskólasamfélaginu betur. Þér veitir svo sannarlega ekki af enda er komandi skólaár fullt af tækifærum, bæði hvað varðar hagsmunabaráttu stúdenta og félagslífið sem hefur legið í dvala. Í byrjun sumars hófum við undirbúning á Októberfest, stærstu tónlistarhátíð háskólanema þar sem margt af vinsælasta tónlistarfólki landsins stígur á stokk. Stúdentaráð er afar lánsamt að halda hátíðina á ári hverju. Hún er sérsniðin fyrir ykkur og fyrir sum e.t.v. fyrsta skrefið inn í félagslíf háskólagöngunnar. Upphaf haustmisseris er í mörgum tilfellum fyrstu kynni nýrra nema á nemendafélög skólans sem og stúdentahreyfingunni. Dear freshman,

Welcome to the University of Iceland! The Student Council has eagerly awaited your arrival all summer and made this guidebook just for you, as an introduction to campus life. And we recommend you make good use of it, because the upcoming academic year is full of opportunities, both when it comes to the fight for student’s rights and the social life that has been lying dormant for quite some time. Early this summer, we started preparing for Októberfest, the largest music festival in Iceland organised by students, for students. There, many of Iceland’s most prominent musicians will perform. The Student Council celebrates the opportunity to throw this festival, every year. It is specifically created for students and will, for some of you, mark your first steps into social life at the University. The start of the fall semester will, for many of you, also mark the first time you get introduced to the student body and student union.

The academic year will start off with a bang. We’ll begin by gathering together and celebrating Orientation days and Októberfest, for the first time there’ll be a socalled Green Orientation day, a day to celebrate the Green Flag, and add a bit more beauty to our campus by planting some trees alongside

Skólaárið hefst því með pompi og prakt. Við ætlum að sameinast í fögnuði nýnemadaga og Októberfest, halda í fyrsta sinn svokallaðan Grænan nýnemadag til að gera grænfánanum hátt undir höfði og fegra háskólasvæðið okkar með því að gróðursetja nokkur vel valin tré, stúdentar og starfsfólk skólans. Umhverfismálin eiga að fá að njóta sín á þessu ári og ekki síður alþjóðamál nú þegar fer að birta til. Stúdentaráð fer nú með forsæti í stúdentaráði Aurora háskóla samstarfsnetsins í annað sinn, en í þetta skipti er það alþjóðafulltrúi Stúdentaráðs sem sinnir því embætti. Kynningardagar fyrir erlenda nemendur skipa þar með einnig stóran sess í dagskrá haustsins. Það skiptir máli að stúdentar upplifi sig sem hluta af stærri heild innan um fjölbreytta mannflóru. Háskólinn er ekkert án stúdenta og öfugt. Það verður því að vera sameiginleg stefna okkar að byggja upp samheldinn háskóla og opna faðm okkar allverulega fyrir öllum sem vilja vera með.

Stúdentum við Háskólann hefur fjölgað töluvert á síðastliðnu ári og er það hlutverk Stúdentaráðs að standa vörð um að ykkar hagur sé tryggður. Vegna þessa ákváðum við í vor að setja á fót starfshóp fyrir komandi Alþingiskosningar sem hefur um sumarið unnið að því að kjarna áherslur Stúdentaráðs. Við réðum einnig inn verkefnastjóra á réttindaskrifstofu ráðsins til að annast upplýsingaog gagnasöfnun um réttindi stúdenta innan velferðarkerfisins, þá sérstaklega réttindi stúdenta til atvinnu og tekjuöryggis, heilbrigðisþjónustu, menntunar og félagslegrar þjónustu. Til þess að hægt sé að sinna öflugri hagsmunagæslu verða meðlimir Stúdentaráðs að vera trú sínu hlutverki um að benda á vankanta, vera gagnrýnin og nýta sér þá vettvanga sem þeim standa til boða til að koma málefnum stúdenta áleiðis.

Stúdentaráð býður þig, nýnemi kær, hjartanlega velkominn til náms og leiks við Háskóla Íslands og fallegu Vatnsmýrina sem stöðugt blómstrar.

Isabel Alejandra Días, Forseti Stúdentaráðs HÍ the University’s faculty. Environmental issues and international issues will be be made prominent this year. This is the second time one of our own students is elected to lead the student council of the international university cooperation, Aurora, this time it’s our very own International Officer who holds the presidency. Orientation days for inter national students are also an important event on the fall agenda. It is important that students find a place where they feel a sense of belonging within our diverse student body. The university is nothing without its student and the students are nothing without their university. It needs to be our mutual policy to build an inclusive and tightknit university community, where we celebrate those who wish to join us.

The last year has marked a vast increase in the number of students registered at the University and it is the Student Council’s role to guard your interests. That’s why we decided, in the spring, to put together a task force regarding the general elections that are coming up, this fall. The task force has worked all summer long to define the Student Council’s emphasis concerning these elections. We also hired a program manager to join the Student Rights Office, whose job it is to collect information and data regarding students’ rights in the welfare system, especially when it comes to employment and financial security, health care, education and social services. In order to effectively guard students’ interests, members of the Student Council need to stay true to their role of pointing out insufficiencies; they need to remain critical and employ all accessible platforms to further the fight for students’ rights.

With this, the Student Council would like to formally welcome you, dear freshman, to our place of study and our home, here, in the beautiful Vatnsmýri, that stays in bloom, year round.
