Wellness Matters D uring lockdown one thing that felt so restrictive was the feeling of not being around loved ones, constantly trying to keep our spirits up whilst watching updates of when and if we would see normality again. Our wellbeing and wellness took a nosedive, and ever since it’s something I have wanted to champion and highlight; wellness really does matter. We welcome you then to our Spring edition. This issue’s running theme is all about creating the highest vision for yourself, self-care, self-love and making 2022 the best year yet. In this edition we highlight some incredible local brands in our ‘Brands of Tomorrow’ section. Five brands all unique in their own way, who have carved a niche in their chosen fields. Supporting local is something we are passionate about at Style of the city with our everpopular Shop Local Initiative (p8) Cover star and UK RnB legend Shola Ama joined us for our first annual Style of the city gala. This fabulous evening at the Parkgate Hotel saw our guests enjoy a much-needed dinner and dance, something that has been quite restrictive of late. It was great to see so many people attend, and we look forward in preparing for our next one. All the pictures and details (p78) We have filled this latest issue with all the things you enjoy, including our sought-after fashion section (p20) and beauty must haves. We really hope you enjoy this issue and as the days get lighter and Spring begins to blossom, taking time for yourself and your wellbeing is something we feel to prioritise. We couldn’t finalise this issue without acknowledging the humanity plight in Ukraine, there aren’t enough words to convey our compassion and empathy as the world looks on almost helpless. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected. Thanks for picking us up x

SPONSORED Momma Nature Momma Nature is a small independent Cardiff based business creating skincare products using natural ingredients. The idea behind the business began after a loved one was diagnosed with cancer. Before radiotherapy sessions they were advised not to use certain skincare products as they contained aluminium. This information made us think more about the ingredients in the products we were putting on our skin. After much research into natural products and their properties and a lot of experimentation Momma Nature’s first products emerged 5 years ago. All ingredients are organic and natural, from the Shea butter obtained from a woman’s cooperative in Ghana to locally sourced beeswax. Our products include moisturising body butters, hand creams, nail creams, lip balms, face creams and soaps all hand made in Cardiff. Products can be made to order in a variety of fragrances and sizes. We promote a zero waste policy with all packaging being recyclable and we offer money back for all tins returned to us for re-use. You can find us at markets in and around Cardiff. We are at Roath market on the 2nd Saturday of every month and Indiesuperstore markets in Llandaff North and The Bone Yard. Follow us on Instagram @momma_nature_cardiff to see where we will be. Our Facebook shop www.facebook.com/welshskincare/shop can also be used to order products which can be delivered to your door.

LO LOUNGE
Lo Lounge A brand like no other and Cardiff Bay’s best Kept Secret o Lounge is one of those special places where you can unwind, looking over the stunning views of Cardiff Bay. It has the bonus of being blessed with the best sunspot, with the most incredible sunrise and sunset views. Whether you are enjoying an early morning breakfast or lunch with friends, Lo Lounge will have you wanting and waiting for more. A collective creation from Konsa Micallef, Matt Zain and partners, Lo Lounge was designed to cater to everyone’s taste no matter the occasion, their succulent menus consisting of main meals, sweet treats, light bites and lots more including a newly added Gluten free section. Their divine cocktail menu has a great selection to suit everyone including fine wines and spirits. The restaurant backdrop, with a burst of their signature turquoise colour scheme, historically reminds its customers of the true significance of Cardiff Bay. Adorned with black and white images from that time; In those days, many a ship would pass through, enthralled by a community spirit which still shines across Tiger Bay today as it is lovingly referred to. Lo Lounge has captured this effervescent vibe beautifully. Konsa’s childhood of growing up in the bay, has also played a part in creating a real passion for the brand. What’s most impressive with Lo Lounge is their true desire to give back. Every month Lo Lounge donate a large sum to Boomerang, a Cardiff local charity who help the homeless, children in need, poverty-stricken families and so much more. A dog friendly venue inside and out, they even have their own resident pooch by the name of Harvey who insists on keeping lots of treats ready for any VIP-Furbabies that come through and will be launching their very own doggie drinks menu due to popular demand.

WING STACK Created with a desire to bring people together over succulent stacks of flavour.
W
ing Stack the brainchild of Shaz Haris and Jay Miah was born after feeling the slug during Covid lockdown 2020. It was the need to be around loved ones which saw Shaz start to create recipes in his kitchen, leading to the creation of Wingstack, a restaurant offering the finest chicken wings and burgers plus many more tasty delights. Wingstacks first home was a small trailer in Cardiff’s Corporation Yard, (a hub of local brands in a market style set up.). Wing Stacks next home was part of the Cyncoed and Lakeside community, thus furthering their brand to a wider audience. It also gave them the perfect opportunity to widen their market research by testing out their sought after wing flavours on different audiences. The success was phenomenal and looking for a flagship store for their tasty creations, Wing Stack found the perfect spot, on Whitchurch Road. The food they create is made with love and passion, selecting only the finest ingredients via local produce. Shaz explains, “It’s been a very difficult and turbulent time for small businesses, so we are big supporters of local businesses and try to shop local whenever we can. Our aim is to franchise out Wing Stack throughout the UK to London, Bristol, Sheffield and Birmingham.” With a vibrant restaurant décor to match Wing Stacks bright uplifting vibe, it’s the perfect spot for friends and loved ones alike. Wing Stack is located on 86 Whitchurch Road Cardiff Instagram @wingstackuk Style of the city 15
ASTRAL EMPORIUM
The Astral Emporium Unique accessories and jewellery for all. Founded by one woman’s determination to find strength and healing while cultivating her distinctive brand.
he Astral Emporium is run by Mum of two Emily Madeley. Suffering with fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, arthritis and more, she puts all her heart and soul into making each piece unique and beautiful. She started the Astral Emporium when she was suffering from postnatal depression after the birth of her first child as a way of finding herself and her interests, and realising just because she’s a Mum she can still do anything she put her mind to. Emily’s love for crystals started at a young age, but she didn’t really dive into it until her husband Jon convinced her to find something she was passionate about when he was helping her cope with her depression. After studying crystal healing and Buddhism, she started using crystals in her art work, which at that time was painting. Due to her health issues, it became a struggle for Emily to hold a paintbrush for long periods of time, so she had to find new ways of creating beautiful things. She tried multiple techniques including graphic design, resin and wreath making, until she became very passionate about crowns and accessories. The crown idea came from her wreaths as she wanted to make dried flower head pieces, but due to the pain in her fingers she found it too difficult to handle them and had to find new ways of making crowns. Each is a one-off piece and made with ethically sourced crystals. This is what makes Emily’s accessories unique on the market. Her pieces range from dainty tiaras to large editorial pieces, and even inspired by TV shows like The Witcher. The Astral Emporium is a very small business as Emily runs it from

just two metal suitcases in her kitchen, but that doesn’t stop her. She has big plans for her business, including an upcoming Bridal range. Due to her health issues, Emily sometimes has to use a walking stick at just 27 years old - so she is currently working on a variety of elaborate and gorgeous canes to help others with the problem and sometimes embarrassment of having to use unfashionable walking sticks. This is also why Emily uses crystals in her work, as she is one of the many people who believe in their healing and spiritual properties. And if you don’t believe in them, at least they’re pretty! To top it all off, she also uses environmentally friendly packaging and ships worldwide. You can find Emily on Instagram at @theastralemporium, Tiktok @theastralemporium or find her products at www.theastralemporium.com

SPECTRUM
Hey!
Thank you so much for picking up the Spring edition of Style of the City and once again for reading our pages. We always want them to be a source of inspiration and that relates to the running theme of this issue, being the best version of yourself. We're at that point in the year we tend to think is the bleakest, but we believe there's always something we can do to bring some colour to even the greyest months. The beginning of a new year is the ideal time to reset and make adjustments to your personal habits for the better. Change can be intimidating, but without change we would never grow. We’d like to encourage you to make small, positive changes and enjoy life’s little wins. We are all under increasing pressure to 'do our bit' for our planet and it is the little things we each do for each other that collectively amount to a big difference, and help us move small steps closer to being our best selves. One thing we can all do is simply take care of what we have. Just by re-wearing our favourite clothes for years and restyling them, choosing investment pieces rather than throw away fashion and even by cleaning your brushes. By taking care of our brushes they last longer, improve skin health and it gives us some time away from a screen which we all need. By making this a weekly habit with our vegan solid brush soap, you'll extend the lifetime of your tools, and that will definitely make a difference to the environment. Less waste is something we should all prioritise, and on that note please also remember to turn off the tap in between rinses! Not much makes us feel better than doing something good, so rather than change ourselves drastically let’s just work towards those small changes, starting with consuming fewer and choosing better things. 28 Style of the city

ROYAL LANCASTER LONDON
A Luxurious Staycation in the Heart of London The Royal Lancaster London is a hotel like no other, set in Hyde Park.
his mid-century architectural icon, famous for its skyline views and only minutes away from Paddington Station; Style of the city decided to try out this gem for ourselves and see what all the fuss was about. With only two hours on the train from Cardiff, getting to London is now quicker than ever, one of our favourite cities and getting to the Royal Lancaster couldn’t be quicker. A brisk walk and you're there, greeted by the most welcoming staff. Step through the revolving doors into a stunning white and gold marble floor lobby. This hotel oozes understated luxury, rich with fresh on-trend décor, far from ostentatious it is intimate and homely. Taken up to the park suite, as soon as you enter, you realise just how special this hotel is, the views were spectacular. Looking over the beautiful skyline of Hyde Park, high in the clouds, it’s as if all your cares have been taken away, as you absorb the relaxed ambience with cosy slippers and robes in tow. The decadent bathroom, adorned with ‘The White Company’ toiletries and a stunning bath to soak in, really stood out. And the bedroom area with the cosiest bed to add to this infusion of luxe. There are two main restaurants and a gorgeous in-dinning menu to feast on. We went for the Nipa Thai, authentic Thai cuisine that truly surpassed expectation. Each dish rich with flavours, choosing a choice from their A La Carte menu, the vibrant chicken and Thai aubergine curry is one I highly recommend. Although Royal Lancaster is not a spa hotel, the experience of a spa is taken care of via their Royal Nuad Thai sanctuary. An array of treatments, from deep Thai massages to manicures and pedicures to ensure your overall wellbeing. At breakfast no choice was spared, from pastries, fruits, cereals, or a choice of traditional English for your choosing. So what was the verdict on the Royal Lancaster? To put it bluntly, the most luxurious hotel city break with views that will stay with you forever.

HOLM HOUSE
44 Style of the city
HOLM HOUSE
Holm is where the heart is… The chic boutique hotel based at the heart of Penarth Pier offers coastal luxury in abundance and thanks to its restaurant, Holm House, has long been considered the jewel in the crown of Penarth’s dining scene. Vale locals and city folk alike flock here in the summer for al-fresco dining in the picturesque garden, one of the largest the city/vale has to offer. Whilst in colder months it’s the cosy log fires that set the scene. We recently visited to sample dishes from the al-a-carte menu and we weren’t disappointed. Much of the menus inspiration is derived from the coastal setting with plentiful fish and seafood options to choose from. For starters I chose the classic, calamari. It arrived piping hot and crispy - just how I like it, the mayonnaise dipping sauce had a nice hot kick that perfectly complimented. Meanwhile my dining partner went for the chicken satay skewers and advised they were equally delicious. For mains I had King Prawn and Crab linguine served in a chilli lobster bisque sauce. For me this was the highlight of the meal, super tasty and
fulfilling and the king prawns top quality. The fillet steak was also good, served with proper home cooked triple cooked chips which is a must. For dessert (at this point I was already pretty full but it would be scandalous not to try) we sampled the vanilla creme brûlée and lemon tart, the former was a little too creamy for me but my partner enjoyed, however the lemon tart was absolutely perfect, the texture was spot on. The service was also attentive and polite without being too formal or stuffy and the wine menu is pretty impressive with a great selection of good reds and whites. On this occasion we opted for our favourite bottle of Provence rose, Whispering Angel and finished the evening with an espresso martini. Highly recommend this warm and welcoming hotel for a spot of lunch, dinner or afternoon tea. The food, setting and service does not disappoint. THE PARKGATE HOTEL mongst the backdrop of our familiar city sights, an old building has been given a new lease of life. You may be forgiven for not yet being accustomed to this gorgeous spot, head to Westgate Street and you cannot miss the beautiful Parkgate Hotel. I thought I would give the spa a try, I mean what could be better than indulging in a luxurious spa, situated on the top of a building? An opportunity I couldn’t miss. As you enter the grandiose surroundings, you get a real sense of excitement. The opulence engulfs you in a way that feels stylish yet refined. It’s a Tuesday and the weather as you can imagine is grey. A wellbeing spruce up was just what the doctor ordered and to my pleasant surprise is what I got. Enter the spa; The smells of aromatherapy and their signature Elemis products, takes you away from city ‘drab’ and straight into an oasis of relaxation. Walking into what can only be described as ‘selfcare heaven.’ Immersing myself into the infinity pool, with the warm soothing waters, overlooking our capital city, taking wellbeing to another level. The 90-minute thermal suite with its hydrotherapy bubbling spa and massaging water showers, was a feature that really stood out. Maybe because you are so high up that the escapism adds to the feeling of wellbeing. The views were spectacular, I could almost envisage hearing the Welsh national anthem, as you take in the fabulous stadium views. To everyone’s relief not one line of the anthem came out. That takes me to another spa feature, gone are the days of cramming yourself into a spa pool, the infinity pool allows you to book your slot, so you can basically indulge in your privacy. I enjoyed a full body Elemis deep tissue massage, perfect for alleviating high stress levels and muscle pain. I’m not sure if I floated out of the treatment room or walked! Either way it was very much needed and worked a treat. Feeling revitalised, I headed to the Sorting Room restaurant and indulged in a succulent lunch. The food tasted gorgeous as was the ambience, a real decadent relaxing vibe. I opted for the sea bass although the lunch selection gives you different options to choose from, and reasonably priced. I figured a chocolate treat was on the cards and the sticky toffee pudding topped with fudge sauce, was the ultimate parting gift.

Mum goals for 2022 irstly, shout out to the amazing inaugural Style Nights event at the Parkgate Hotel. It certainly was super stylish and everyone looked fabulous. It was an honour to host the evening and great to be out and dressed up. A huge success. Well done Rosie and the whole team!
F
For me, it’s been a crazy few months. Exciting and stressful. Now that the world is getting back to pre-pandemic times, hosting gigs along with my radio and reporting duties are coming thick and fast. I feel my life at the moment is a big balancing act of spinning plates of being a Mum, work, child care, family, friends, home, self-care, don’t catch Covid etc. The last few months have been amazing and I've been able to full fill dream roles in my work and I’ve relished the opportunities, but as you know being a parent, that can be clouded with huge bout of Mum guilt and logistical child care nightmares. That and grandparent guilt as I call it when I've had to leave Indy with them for a few days as I head off to work. I never worry that Indy is being 'neglected' as she has so much fun every single day no matter where she is, I just hate the burden I put of my family sometimes. Grandparents are GOLDEN. They have saved the day a few times. We live in an era of the chaotic lifestyle and in 2022 I'm determined to reign it in a bit! Just a bit! I've made some Mum goals for 2022. 48 Style of the city
SAY NO MORE I overschedule myself constantly. Because I'm a freelancer, it's hardwired into me to say YES to every opportunity. I tend to put myself last on occasions and assume everything will just work out and then it becomes a logistically nightmare. I need to say more no this year to work situations that don't suit me. I want to work but I want it to be on my terms and I want to work the roles at I'm passionate about. BE MORE PRESENT I want to create a daily habit of spending quality time with Indy, even on the busiest days when I'm working. Even if it's just 20 minutes where we sing a song or dance or pretend to do make-up together. She loves that at the moment. I just want a moment of me and her and no distractions where we really connect. HAVE A SOCIAL MEDIA DIET I'm going to try and set a daily or weekly unplug time when I turn off all distractions and just focus on my family. I'm addicted to my phone. I need to really tell myself to STOP
on some occasions. My main goal is bringing down my screen time. As long as it's on a decline each week, I'm doing well.
MONTHLY FAMILY DATES Indy loves hanging out with Mum and Dad together. When Leighton my partner is back from work off-shore Indy loves it- she gets so excited. But due to obligations working at random times on my side... When Leighton is home, I tend to book work in and any days off together we usually spend just relaxing and lazing about, which is totally cool, but I want to plan more days out as a family. Make memories. I guess we don't technically have to leave the house and we could have a day of baking, local walks, picnics, going to the farm, swimming, small or big, just us 3. GET OUTSIDE Get fresh air—and a fresh start to 2022—by spending some time outside. We love our treks so much and walks with a coffee, but we only tend to do that when we are away. We have all the gear and the beautiful Welsh outdoors are right on our
POLLY'S BABY BLOG
doorstep. Time to get the walking boots out and this amazing Thule Sapling carrier for Indy. Time to give it a spin up Pen-y-Fan. Indy loves her scooter so much and we want to get her into a cycling class this year, so we can all get on our bikes together!
DO SOMETHING JUST FOR ME EVERY WEEK Lastly, setting a goal for myself, for Mama! Loving yourself is the most important goal that you should do. I miss the gym; I miss classes and I miss boxing. Trying to hit the gym at least once a week should be easy, I just need to motivate myself. I love a massage, getting my nails done, a walk around the Cardiff shops, listening to my favourite music on a walk... I want to get to more gigs this year, I want see and immerse myself in live music again. I’ve missed that over the last two years. If you give something for yourself, you can always manage stress and challenges. I hope that this list will inspire you to set meaningful goals that will help you build a happy life for you and your kids. Style of the city 49
UWC ATLANTIC 60 YEARS YOUNG!
Welsh college at the heart of global thinking and transformation
T
he ancient town of Llantwit Major is steeped in education. Once home to the earliest formal centre of learning in the UK founded by St Illtyd, the area drew scholars from all over Europe with Irish and Welsh Patrol Saints Patrick and David reportedly among them. Just two miles along the Heritage Coast in the 12th Century St Donat’s Castle is a modern-day reminder of this pioneering tradition. UWC Atlantic - or Atlantic College as it’s locally known - was founded in 1962 by education visionary Kurt Hahn, who also set up Outward Bound and The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. At the height of the Cold War he brought together teenagers from all over the world and from deliberately diverse backgrounds - financial, cultural and religious - to live, learn together 50 Style of the city
through service to others. The aim? Greater understanding, peace and sustainability. And so another record was set in this historic corner of the Vale of Glamorgan with the inception of the world’s first international sixth form college. A story that began in a castle in south Wales 60 years ago has since grown into a global network of 18 colleges across four continents and home to more than 4,500 students from 155 countries. And at the heart of UWC Atlantic’s ethos is a scholarship programme to ensure everyone from refugees to royalty and everyone in between, has the opportunity to study there. More than half of students receive financial assistance, and around 5% come from a refugee, displaced or persecuted background, benefiting from a full scholarship. UWC Atlantic can lay claim to many historic ‘firsts’. It has a proud history in sea rescue having invented the Rigid-hulled Inflatable Boat and co-created the acclaimed International Baccalaureate. Now it is drawing up a new curriculum to
explore solutions to the challenges of the 21st Century including climate change and conflict-resolution. And while proud to be the flagship of a global education movement, the college is immensely proud to be Welsh. October marks the beginning of UWC Atlantic’s 60th anniversary celebrations. As well as increasing scholarships for Welsh students, the college is preparing a postpandemic activity programme at its historic seafront and exploring new educational partnerships. Atlantic college’s 60-year-old mission to ‘make education a force to unite people, nations and cultures for peace and a sustainable future’ is as relevant today as ever. If you are passionate about making a difference in the world - whatever your background or circumstances - or you would like to find out more how you can support what we do, we would love to hear from you. To say the Bardai’s journey to South Wales has been circuitous is an understatement.
It goes back to Uganda, then under British rule. Naheed Bardai’s parents - of Gujarati heritage - fled to Canada as refugees when, in 1972, military dictator Idi Amin expelled all Asians. Born in Toronto, Naheed had a clear ambition - take over the family computer science business and use his acumen to help the developing world. But that ended abruptly during a student backpacking tour culminating in Pakistan where his aunt ran a school. “I began to realise how embarrassingly naive I was,” he says. “Who was I to project what I thought was good for someone living in a different part of the world? “I knew if I really wanted to help, it was by teaching and empowering younger generations to make good decisions for themselves and their communities.” Meanwhile, his future wife, Edwina, from a small town in Kenya, was planning her journey to the coastal city of Mombasa, to begin a career in tourism. The hotel she worked in was hosting a conference attended by Naheed, by now teaching at the city’s multicultural Aga Khan Academy, which is where they met. After 10 years in Kenya, Naheed joined Toronto’s prestigious Upper Canada College. In late 2021 the historic Atlantic College - heralded by The Times as “the most interesting experiment in education since the Second World War” - was recruiting a new principal. “I didn’t hesitate,” he says. “UWC Atlantic was the first to bring together deliberately diverse students to foster world peace. “I'm passionate about maximising the opportunities diversity brings, to ensure structures are in place

for it to thrive and to collectively address some of our most pressing humanitarian problems. It speaks of the enhancement of human dignity, there’s no more noble outcome in my mind.” It’s only a few months since Naheed, Edwina, Rainan, five, and three-year-old Nabih, moved into their home near the walls of the ancient St Donat’s Castle, once home of American newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst and steeped in history. The boys have settled into local schools and are
already learning Welsh. “Our journey to Wales pales in comparison to some students,” Naheed says. “The hardships they have overcome, fleeing violence and living in refugee camps. “We’ve just raised money for five Afghanistan scholarships but we’ve also got five Welsh full scholarship students. “Wales is stunningly beautiful, rich in its language and culture but like everywhere, there can be a lack of opportunities in some areas. Connecting with its heartlands is vital.” Naheed’s priority is continuing the college’s tradition of pioneering, experimental education - UWC Atlantic co-created the International Baccalaureate. Designing a radical education model for the 21st Century, he wants students to not only understand the challenges of today’s world but know how to take informed action to engender more fairness and compassion in the divergent societies they return to. “Thousands of our alumni all over the world regard Wales as their second home,” he says. “I know how they feel. People told me I’d fall in love with Wales but warned me about the rain. But none of its beauty would exist without rain. Besides, I come from Canada. Have you heard about the winters over there?”

ewly approved foster carer Mo took Jo and her Mum into her home when Jo was just 6 months old. Now, 22 years on, Jo is grateful for the life she has been able to live and the success she has achieved with the support and encouragement of her foster carer. Mo’s husband passed away suddenly, which made her re-evaluate life. Her friend was a foster carer and recommended she gave it a try, so she contacted Calon Cymru. Jo was one of Mo’s first placements, she was 6 months old when her and her Mum came to live with her in a parent and child placement. A parent and child placement (also referred to as P&C) is a type of foster placement that gives parents the opportunity to demonstrate or learn how to look after their baby over an initial 12-week period, with the help and support of a foster carer. The foster carer is on hand to help give advice about feeding and bathing and making sure appointments are kept with the health and social worker. Due to circumstances, Jo’s mum was unable to bring her up after the initial placement assessment, Jo was able to continue her placement with foster carer Mo up until adulthood: “I have so many fond memories of Jo growing up and I am unbelievably proud of her. She is now a qualified midwife. It wasn’t easy for her; she is very hands on, but must work hard with the theory, she persevered through it all. We have worked hard together getting through exams to give her as much choice as possible in life.” With advice, support and monitoring from foster carer Mo, Jo was given the opportunity to lead an opportunistic life and is currently working long hours as a newly qualified midwife to save up the money to buy her own house. She believes the experience of being brought up around other children with different backgrounds and with different needs was what made her decision to go into the midwifery field. Mo was very supportive and helped Jo through her journey: “She supported me all the way, through everything. At high school, I was struggling with science and maths, so Mo got me tutors for these subjects

SUPPORTIVE FOSTER CARER helps a young person achieve career ambitions and I went from getting E’s to B’s. She helped me get my first job whilst I was at college, so I was able to buy my first car. Mo helped me get ready for Uni and is still helping me now providing a place to stay while I save up for a house,” said Jo. Jo’s aspirations were originally to be a forensic scientist after watching detective programs with Mo but soon realised that working with children was her passion. “I have always struggled to believe in myself but now I am realising I am doing something to help other women and young babies.” “So many positives have come from being in Foster Care. My birth Mum will always be Mum, but Mo has been my maternal figure. Mo is the best thing that could have happened to me, and my Mum agrees,” said Jo. Mo has looked after nearly 20 foster children/young people during her 22 years as a foster carer and feels she has been supported all the way with Calon Cymru, through the specialist training and support. She said: “Everyone I have had contact with including the social workers and therapists have all been amazing.” Fostering doesn’t come without its challenges, and it is important to understand what being a Foster Carer entails. Mo told us: “You learn through experience. You can’t always do things right first time, but you learn. Be prepared for the unexpected.” Jo has also received support from Calon: “Calon Cymru have been really good. They were there to help me whenever I needed them. They helped me with work experience, funding for tuition and accommodation for uni. Some aspects of being in care are not easy but Calon Cymru were able to work through things with me.” Jo explains how being part of a fostering was, “incredibly life changing.” Do you have the resilience and passion to change young lives in Wales? Copper Moon Photography Yolanda Kingdon, on creating special birthing memories.
his style of photography is something I hold close to my heart. As a mother of four children, I understand how precious is every moment in your journey, from carrying your baby to your own rebirth as a woman in giving birth to your wonderful new baby, and the importance of capturing the tiny details that will only last a small amount of time. For me, when a family contacts me to book a photoshoot it is not just a photoshoot but documenting memories as they happen and then creating a story through imagery. I have been doing pregnancy and baby photoshoots for over seventeen years, but photographing a birth was a new experience for me even though I had wanted to capture a birth for years. It is hard to find a woman and a family who are willing to trust a photographer at such an intimate and precious time, so I was very lucky to be part of Harriet Valentino’s birthing story on 16th May 2020. It was an experience I will never forget and from what Harriet and her husband told me, they appreciated me being calm, helpful and also a mother myself. I created a separate Instagram account for my Pregnancy, Birth and Baby Photography and a magical name @copper.moon.photography to represent myself as a person and the imagery I create.

Pregnancy and baby photography has been a normal thing in the UK for a long time, but birth photography is very new, though in North America it is just as normal as a pregnancy photoshoot. I would love to normalise birth photography here in the UK. Giving birth to a baby is just as or even more important than a wedding day, so why not document it? For those who are worried about the way they may look, trust me - this is the last thing you’ll be worrying about when looking back through your first moments with your newborn baby, the reactions of your partner and family, the time on the clock, your facial expression, the first cuddle, your baby's tiny toes and first cries. ‘NO FAULT DIVORCE’ WILL HELP TO PUT CHILDREN FIRST. Family law specialist Lisa Shrimpton tells us about upcoming changes in Divorce Law.
E
very January heralds a spike in divorce enquiries – so much so that the first working day of the New Year is known as ‘National Divorce Day’. From April this year, divorce, and more specifically, the grounds for divorce are set to change. Divorce laws in the UK haven’t changed since they came into effect in 1973, but thanks to the Divorce, Dissolution and Separation Act 2020, this Springtime will herald a change that will help separating couples with children to protect them from emotional distress a divorce may bring. The law currently requires one of the parties to take the blame, or be at fault for the failure of the marriage for one of five reasons; these are adultery, unreasonable behaviour, desertion, living apart for 2 years with agreement or 5 years without agreement. For couples with children that wish to co-parent, the law has often been criticised because the need to apportion blame adds a further layer of animosity and stress to a relationship already in crisis. However, from 6th April 2022, there will no longer be the need for either party to provide evidence of adultery, desertion or unreasonable behaviour. ‘No fault divorce’, as it is known allows couples to apply individually or jointly to divorce on the basis that their marriage has irretrievably broken down. It is hoped that in cases where children are involved that any lasting impact of separation will be minimised, thanks to the new Lisa Shrimpton law facilitating an amicable split. The commonly recognised terms ‘Decree Nisi’ and ‘Decree Absolute’ will cease to exist. They will be changed to ‘Conditional Order’ and ‘Final Order’ respectively and will apply to all marriages and civil partnerships. With no-fault involved, the change also means that a divorce application cannot be contested (except on the grounds of the validity of the marriage); it is hoped that this will result in a more cost-effective, and less contentious process for all parties involved.”

Do things that are good for your wellbeing Reconnecting to our highest self; reconnecting to your soul and do things that are good for your wellbeing. This seems to be the mantra for 2022.
fter the anxiety of last year we need to focus on being the best and living the best way so that we disperse stress and anxiety. Do things that make you happier and create environments that make you happy. How do we do this in our homes? The most obvious is to clear clutter and get rid of what is unnecessary. To connect – find a calm, quiet spot to spend time in. As we spend so much time at home ensure you create a calm and quiet spot somewhere in your home or garden – a retreat. Where do you start? How about your bedroom and bathroom. Think of how much time we spend in these two rooms; almost half of our lives. When recreating these spaces think of calming, clean, neutral colour schemes that infuse simplicity and harmony. Consider blending antique pieces with new items; a style that emerges over time. Ultimately, your decorating style should be a reflection of your personality and your home should be filled with things you love and which make you feel safe, comfortable and at home. The images show a recent Chameleon makeover, ie ‘a grown up’ bedroom and ensuite that combine timeless elegance and calmness. My advice for 2022 is to enjoy the moment and take each step slowly and decisively. Take your time!

NUFFIELD HEALTH
THE NEXT GENERATION IN JOINT REPLACEMENT SURGERY Nuffield Health Cardiff and Vale Hospitals are the first hospital in Wales to offer robotic arm assisted surgery for joint replacement.
Two Pioneering patients undergo this Incredible robotic joint surgery, and share their story and experiences. Mrs Pamela Chapman, of Dinas Powys, was the first patient in Wales, with the surgeon using Mako robotic arm-assisted surgery, to have her hip replaced. A few weeks now since her November operation, Mrs Chapman says she frequently forgets she has had either a painful hip or the surgery, as her right hip is so much improved. When the option to have Stryker Smartrobotics at Nuffield Health Cardiff and Vale Hospitals was mentioned, Mrs Chapman said she felt confident that this was the right way to go. Pamela said, “ It was so reassuring to hear how very precise the procedure would be, with quicker recovery and reduced pain. It was all very impressive and exciting. Compared to my friend who has had a conventional hip replacement, my wound was less messy, seemed cleaner and healed more quickly. I would firmly recommend it.” A joint replacement can help people return to every-day activities like walking, bending, sleeping and driving, without pain or stiffness. The Stryker Mako system offers a high level of alignment and positioning of the new hip or knee joint during surgery. Using a detailed individualised plan, with a 3D virtual model of the patient’s anatomy,
devised from their CT scan before surgery, the surgeon is able to implant the joint replacement in the best position for the patient with a high degree of accuracy. Mr D Phillip Thomas was Pamela’s orthopaedic surgeon and the 79 year old selected him to do the hip replacement, following advice
from her physiotherapist. Her GP had referred her for physiotherapy when her knee was giving her pain. The Nuffield Health physio Adrian Brown, who had treated a neck problem previously with miraculous results, recommended referral to an orthopaedic surgeon and a hip x-ray, as he wasn’t convinced it was the knee which was causing the problem. When she came in for surgery with Mr Thomas, Pamela said everything and everyone she came across was excellent.
Whilst the surgeon still performs the surgery, the robotic arm is there to be guided by the surgeon to accurately remove diseased and damaged bone and cartilage. The new implant, which the robot has helped size, is then fitted precisely into the space created. The process is failsafe, as the robot prevents anything being done which isn’t exactly right. Mrs Chapman said she loved being at the Nuffield Vale hospital for three nights and wanted to stay for a week! Physios Nicky and Christina have helped her immensely and she was out of bed on a frame early in the morning, just hours after her hip replacement in the late afternoon.
It took a while to get going, as her muscles were weak but she was very quickly able to function again and has been seeing her physiotherapist fortnightly with good progress. She has her 18 year old grandson living with her who helped after the operation, along with her daughter who came over to assist. A final x-ray and consultation is due at the end of January. Suffering with arthritis in various joints, sadly Pamela had to give up her beloved horse riding 15 years ago, as she was finding it difficult to get onto her horse. Since the hip replacement, simple day to day things are making her life immeasurably better – being able to bend to put on her socks herself or trim her own toenails, for example, and simply getting about the house or going for a short walk. She says she now feels ‘fit and able’, with just a little discomfort now only occurring towards the end of the day. Pamela only takes painkillers when needed and that isn’t often anymore. Her right hip was the more deteriorated of the two and now that has been fixed, Mrs Chapman and her surgeon Mr Thomas are planning for the left hip to be replaced - with robotic arm- assisted surgery, of course!
THE NEXT GENERATION IN KNEE REPLACEMENT Cardiff resident Robert OwenConway is delighted with his robotically assisted Mako knee replacement that well-known knee surgery specialist Mr Christopher Wilson implanted for him in November, as the first robotically assisted Stryker Mako knee in Wales.
A keen sportsman, cyclist and walker, at 76, Mr OwenConway says his days of running the Cardiff marathon are now behind him but will soon be back on his bike, cycling 15 miles every other day around the city and in picturesque Solva, West Wales. For now, with a huge reduction in discomfort, he and his wife are enjoying daily threemile walks and he recommends the robotic procedure, which involves precision measurement for accuracy and consistency. Rob says, “Walking is absolutely perfect. Before the op, my wife was always ahead but now she can’t keep up with me!” A slow progression of arthritis over a 10 year period, possibly as a result of over-use and working at heights as a lighting and service engineer, caused Robert to consult his GP two years ago, where subsequent x-rays showed the initial damage. This got much worse during lockdown, to the point that he couldn’t walk without severe pain, slept badly and couldn’t get off his bike, so could no longer cycle. A GP friend recommended Mr Wilson as a superb knee surgeon and Robert made an appointment with him at the Nuffield Health Cardiff and Vale Hospitals. Consultant orthopaedic knee surgeon Mr Christopher Wilson explains, “When I met Mr OwenConway, his left knee was out of shape, being severely affected by arthritis. He struggled with daily activities, had a limited range of movement, getting comfortable to sleep was a problem and his knee scores indicated severe symptoms. X-rays showed significant arthritis, which only a total knee replacement would resolve. Being an active gentleman, we discussed the
NUFFIELD HEALTH possibility of the Mako roboticallyassisted knee replacement, which would allow him to return comfortably to his hobbies of cycling and walking. Already he is doing really well with a much better range of movement. This next generation knee replacement appears to be the way forward, as in every case there is great precision and this may offer more consistent results and a more rapid recovery with and less discomfort. The robot does not replace the surgeon but is used as an aid to increase accuracy during the operation, based on scans performed before the surgery.” Robert went in for his new knee on the morning of Friday 19 November and was already able to stand with a frame the same day. After he managed the stairs, using crutches and encouragement from the physiotherapists, Robert was home again after just two nights in the Vale hospital. He said everybody was very helpful and he appreciated the direct instruction that made sure he was up and about quickly. He says, “The improvement has been in very definite stages and has been quite dramatic. I used to go to the gym until recently and played squash and rugby and went running in my 40s. I particularly enjoy cycling and that is what I am looking forward to returning to the most. It was a big investment but it is important for me and my wife Lynn for me to get back to living an active life, whilst I am in my mid 70s and still fit. I am really glad I found Mr Wilson, as he certainly knows his stuff and inspired confidence in me for the new robotically-assisted option. Life is just getting better and better.” To find out more about Stryker Mako for hip and knee replacement surgery at Nuffield Health Cardiff and Vale Hospitals, please call 02920 836714 or see www.nuffieldhealth.com/ hospitals/cardiff-and-vale

WELLNESS
Stephen Truelove is a Mindset Coach and Emotional Support Therapist with over 20 years experience, co-author of The Therapy of Cooking with Cardiff restaurateur Giovanni Malacrino and author of A Journey of Discovery and Self-Learning. Having experienced the highest highs and the lowest lows of life, Stephen developed the Love Life Love You process, Breaking Limitations, and now helps people tackle anxiety, depression and other obstacles to become the best possible version of themselves.
Be your real self, Find real friends, Make a real difference Sigmund Freud defined the two greatest human needs as Love and Work – in other words, good relationships with others and using your talents to make a difference. Both involve not just knowing who you really are, but feeling good about who you really are – i.e. self-esteem. FINDING THE REAL YOU Self-esteem is not who we are, but how we feel about who we are, which may be based on false ideas buried deep in our subconscious.
Self-esteem affects decision-making, relationships, emotional health and overall wellbeing. It also influences motivation, as people with a positive view of themselves and their own potential feel more inspired to take on new challenges.
SELF-ESTEEM IS INFLUENCED BY MANY FACTORS
• How other people react to you • Experiences at home, school, work and in the community • Messages given out by the media. But your own thoughts are the biggest influence on your self-esteem, and they are within your control.
If you tend to focus on your weaknesses or flaws, working on changing that can help you develop a more balanced view of yourself. “Just believe in yourself and all things are possible”. If trite comments like that were true, we could all fly around the treetops without finishing up in plaster or worse. Nevertheless, believing in and accepting yourself for who you are is an important factor in success, relationships, and happiness. Healthy self-esteem guides us towards accepting reality, understanding why we fail, problemsolving instead of feeling sorry for ourselves or giving up. Style of the city 65
WELLNESS LET GO OF LIMITING BELIEFS TO BECOME THE BEST VERSION OF YOURSELF Most of us are held back by limiting beliefs – untrue thoughts we have about ourselves. By learning to recognise and let go of these, you can find the person you really are. Understanding what may be causing these thoughts will help you work out how to move past them. Some limitations are real – accept them with grace. Some are self-imposed – dig them out and get rid of them Make a list of your strengths and weaknesses. No one is perfect, but recognising your accomplishments and learning from your mistakes will help you to maintain a positive outlook and an honest and realistic image of yourself. Discover your best strengths and how to use them to help others and you’ll be on your way to being a happier, more fulfilled person. Self-esteem is not about blowing your own trumpet. It's about learning to like and respect yourself, faults and all. When you value yourself and have good selfesteem, you feel secure and worthwhile. You have generally positive relationships and feel confident about your abilities. You’re more resilient and better able to weather stress and setbacks, more open to learning and feedback, helping you to you master new skills. Write down one thing you really like about yourself. Write down a happy memory, or a happy time you would like to have. Re-program your inner self to work with you, not against you. Only you can change the programming laid down by experience, parents, teachers, peers. A good therapist will help you find
your own way, not try to send you their way. But only if you truly want to change.
TRAIN YOURSELF TO FOCUS ON THE GOOD THINGS Do a bit of digging to identify your talents and strengths and think more positively about your own self-worth. Set yourself a goal, something plain and achievable, and just do it. It will make you feel good and you’ll be more likely to get other things done. We all have strong and weak points. We all fail sometimes, but it doesn’t make us failures. Work out what areas you can improve in and don’t be afraid to ask for help.
BLAME AND GUILT ARE A WASTE OF TIME Letting go of past resentments and failures helps us to move forward. It’s easier to be nice when you feel good about others. And it’s easier to feel good about others if you feel good about yourself. DEVELOP REAL TRUST

communicating with others; feeling understood; knowing there are people who are like us and who like us. If we feel secure within our family, if we feel loved and our needs are met, we’re ready to try new things and take our place in the world. When we first try to walk, we fall down a lot. But with encouragement and kindness, we try again. Gradually we develop the confidence to acknowledge our mistakes and be ready to learn, comfortable giving and receiving compliments, able to laugh at ourselves and be kind to others. Finally, we achieve real harmony between what we say and what we do and thus become our true selves.
RELATIONSHIPS To build self-esteem and grow as a person, we need both appreciation from others and inner self-respect. We all belong to various groups – family, friends, school or work, sports or other hobby groups, etc. And we define ourselves by the relationships and experiences we have in them: feeling part of a group; sharing and
Is there anything you’re ashamed of or afraid your friends might come to know about? How would you feel if your best friend told you something similar? Why do you not trust them as much as you know they could trust you? Do you think they *would* trust you? It is hard to rely on anyone else’s love and trust if you know that the person they think you are is not the whole story. Experiment with a small secret you aren’t too worried about and see how people react. Or talk to a professional who is bound by confidentiality and work out what is blocking you. Listen to what other people have to say and try to understand their feelings and needs. Try to treat everyone, including yourself, with kindness and respect. Even if you disagree, be honest without being hostile or hurtful. Apologise when you’re wrong and learn from
experience rather than blaming yourself or others – they’ll be more likely to try to understand your point of view too. Respect other people's time. Be punctual, put your phone away and give them your attention. Learn to give and to receive genuine compliments. And always keep your promises: if you say you’re going to do something, do it or explain at once if a serious problem has cropped up to prevent you.
WHAT IS REAL LOVE? Think of someone you really loved as a child, a grandparent perhaps, and ask yourself why you loved them so much. Was it because they wore trendy clothes and had the slimmest hips or the biggest biceps? Or did you love them for themselves, because they were kind and generous with themselves and their time and they loved you? Did you stop loving them when you got to the age when everything seems skin deep and no one will love you if you have even one pimple, let alone half a dozen? Did you ever stop loving them? Or did you go on loving them, or their memory, long after that long forgotten boy or girl you thought you couldn’t live without at the time?
BREAKING UP IS HARD TO DO Divorce or widowhood after decades together is truly terrible and deserves an article all of its own. But for a young person with no previous experience, getting jilted can be devastating. You may feel worthless, unloved, unlovable, as if life is at an end, and it may be many months before you start to look around again and realise that just because you weren’t Mr/s Right for that particular person doesn’t mean you won’t find happiness with someone else. As always, childhood experiences affect how well or badly we take this kind of event. The first time is always the worst because we have invested so much and because we don’t yet realise

A man walking along the beach came upon thousands of starfish stranded and dying in the sun. Among them was a child, picking them up one by one and returning them to the sea. “There are thousands of them as far as the eye can see,” said the man. “What difference can you possibly make?” “All the difference in the world to this one,” replied the child, gently returning one more starfish to the sea. that in time we will recover. Not only recover, but become stronger and happier as we gradually learn that finding real love is not about looks or brains or money or posh clothes: top of every survey as the most important quality in a life partner as well as in a friend is Kindness.
GIVE SOMETHING BACK Just pay attention to what goes on around you and think about what you see. One chap I know took to walking on the beach, then to picking up the plastic litter endangering the wildlife there, then decided his current successful career was not fulfilling enough and started a degree in marine biology so as to make an even bigger difference. I did much the same myself: after two decades sorting myself out and studying hard to understand how to make others feel better too, I finally took the plunge, left a successful career as an aviation engineer and became a full-time therapist. Who goes home feeling better about themselves? The person who dumped the litter? The person who did nothing because it wasn’t them that dropped it? Or the person who left the beach in a better state for everyone, sea creatures and humans alike?
FIND A HOBBY OR TRY VOLUNTEERING Doing something useful outside of work – even a local litter pick – will broaden your horizons and your selfesteem and bring you into contact with new people.Think about what you most enjoy doing. Reading? Walking? Singing? Dancing? Watching the rugby, old films, the birds in the garden? Find activities with people who like the same things as you, who bring out the best in you, and try to do the same for them. Volunteering costs nothing but your time and is one way to become the best version of yourself no matter who you are. Whether you have a specific skill to offer or just your time and/or your company, doing some good in the community will make you and those around you feel good. © Stephen Truelove 2021 Love Life Love You Steve is available to work online and at various locations. YOLANDA KINGDON
Yolanda Kingdon Photography Yolanda Kingdon Wales' first Sony ambassador shares hers journey on wedding photography, makeover's and more have been a wedding photographer for over seventeen years, capturing beautiful moments throughout the UK and Europe. I have been part of so many different weddings, from chic, boho, princess castle and so many more. I always feel very blessed to be chosen to capture my clients’ day and to document a family celebrating the happiness and joy of a new married couple. I love to help the bride and groom from the very beginning of the process. I always like to start with a telephone conversation, then a face to face meeting to get to know one another, as I believe it is important to all get along so that you get the best out of your photographer and feel more relaxed on your special day. I am also happy to recommend other suppliers, from florists to videographers, as I believe it is very important for a supplier team to work seamlessly together. I am also a professional makeup artist, and many brides love my makeup style as much as my photography. I like to think of my bridal makeup style as glowy, natural and effortless. The majority of my makeup kit is vegan: if you can get makeup that hasn't been tested on animals, then to me that should be a no brainer. A lot of the vegan makeup smells absolutely gorgeous too. Being able to do the makeup means I know how it is going to look on camera, which is a perfect combination. Over the years I have been lucky enough to photograph weddings abroad, too, in France, Croatia and Italy. These usually go on for two or three days and the atmosphere is quite different from a UK wedding, but definitely a wonderful experience. My style of photography varies from wedding to wedding as I like to be able to adapt for my clients’ requirements. For instance, some couples may want light and airy while others like the dark and contrasty look.

PORTRAIT, MAKEOVER AND PAGEANT PHOTOGRAPHY I have also been a professional female photographer and makeup artist for over seventeen years. Throughout my career, helping a woman to feel confident and sexy has been very important. This is something I came to realise very quickly when teaching myself to become a photographer and makeup artist. Each and every woman who came into my studio was looking for a confidence boost and to feel great. Not every woman I photograph is a model - a makeover photoshoot is for anyone who would like to feel empowered and to embrace themselves. Many like to use the photographs for social media, and this is a fantastic way of one woman empowering another. Others like to keep their photographs private or perhaps gift to a partner. Still others want to break into the modelling industry, and this is something I have helped a lot of people to do over the years. A makeover photoshoot is a form of self-care, taking time to connect with yourself, enjoying dressing up and being wowed by the outcome of the images. The happy smiles on everyone’s faces throughout the years is priceless. I also love creating gorgeous photos with pageant contestants. Indeed, they were some of my first photoshoots. When I photographed my first pageant queen - Miss Wales - I fell in love not just with the photographs but with the way every contestant put their heart and soul into helping people and organisations by using their title to help charities. Over the years I have photographed pageants competing throughout the UK, Europe and North America. Pageant photography has a certain look: very bubbly, smiley and bright. But I also like the way pageant photography is changing slightly, so I can be a little more creative. For instance, I have been using fresh roses a lot over the past few years and I love the look this gives. I have a varied style to my photography as a whole and I try to adapt to please each one of my clients. From beauty campaigns, clothing companies, portraits, model portfolios, pageant photoshoots, bridal boudoir, singers, actors and makeover photoshoots, I generally like to keep my photoshoots fun and full of energy. KB EVENTS & BALLOONS
Taking event styling to the next level.
Founder Kimberley Blake shares how lockdown inspired her to share her passion of event styling, and balloon decor.
fter four years of supplying décor and balloon styling to numerous customers for birthdays, weddings and corporate events around the south wales and Bristol areas, I (Kimberley Blake) have finally launched KB Events & Balloon Styling. I started doing balloons full time during lockdown. I was being contacted by so many people wanting personalised balloons and props to hire during this time as so many people couldn’t celebrate as planned. I would operate a safe drop off and collection policy where I was leaving balloons on people’s doorsteps and creating set ups in gardens which really touched people and lifted spirts during those uncertain times. I want the business to now represent chic and sophisticated styling. I have plenty of props and backdrops to hire including sequin, feather, flower and grass walls. I also offer candy & champagne carts and have just launched the dome tents where people can watch movies, dine and relax under the stars all in the comfort of their back garden. I can supply décor for all occasions and also supply 4ft light up numbers & letters as well as a range of neon signs to hang to compliment balloon garlands! The

best aspect of my job is planning! I love to discuss ideas with the client and hear their expectations. Whatever I can do for someone to bring their vision to life I will do it! If I don’t have something that someone is wanting, I will get it! I adore the transformation stage and watching everything come together. The end result when everything is ready and you see or hear the client’s reaction makes it all worth it for me. I love to play a part in making these memories for people to keep and cherish forever and this is why I truly love what I do. Whether you are wanting a lavish, corporate event or if you’re after a small private set up with a budget I am able to accommodate everyone. My website will be ready to launch end of February 2022 where customers can check availability, see prices and book online. In the meantime, for any information please contact me via email, Instagram or telephone.

KB EVENTS & BALLOONS
1. I'm planning a wedding but have a small budget, can you advise on best decor for my reception? Of Course! I can accommodate to all budgets and wedding types. My best advice would be to keep it simple. It's so easy to get carried away as there is so much to choose from. I think some of the best weddings are simple, sophisticated & elegant. In my opinion, it's the smallest of details which create the biggest impact, items such as candles, foliage/flowers and chair covers can really transform any room.
2. Do you offer covid safe decorative items? All hired items are thoroughly cleaned after every booking. I offer a drop off and collection service for items and even can drop off balloon displays if requested. I ensure all PPE is worn when working to protect my clients and myself.
3. What amenities do you consider "Must Haves?"
For any occasion there must always be a feature. A place to wow your guests, often where you will take pictures. I feel a 'must have' item would be a backdrop. Whether its sequins, feathers or floral- people love them. They can be complimented with balloons or neon signs. They always look fantastic and are such a talking point at any event. BOOKS/REVIEWS
Sophia Leonie Photograher: Ori Jones
Unattached The new book that lifts the lid on being single in the 21st century
Curated by journalist and author Angelica Malin, Unattached explores the nuances of being single today through the voices of thirty women; with personal essays. One of the women, Sophia Leonie, shares how she got involved with the book and candidly answers questions, on navigating singlehood in today’s society. I'm a writer, mainly a playwright and screenwriter, from north London, with a 15-year history of working as a teacher. I believe passionately in education and the empowerment of women and marginalised groups - and that informs everything I write. I was contacted in the beginning of the pandemic about whether I’d be interested 74 Style of the city
in writing an essay in Unattached, after the editor Angelia Malin read a previous article I wrote in the online magazine gal-dem. The article was about coming out of a 13-year relationship and was very personal - without being scornful to the other person - it was all about what I had learnt from the experience. As more time has passed, I know now - more than when I initially wrote that article - that the active choices I made at that difficult time, changed the trajectory of my life, leading to great things personally and professionally. So when I was approached to take part in Unattached I was flattered and said yes. It’s a beautiful, much needed project with a great collection of work. The anthology speaks to women everywhere who have felt defined by their relationship status... It does more than normalises singledom - it celebrates it.
UNATTACHED And if that sneaking sadness comes over you, that thought that you’ll never be able to find love or have a engagement or wedding of your own, just remember - and obviously don’t tell the bride and groom this - but over half of marriages end in divorce, lots of people are pressured into marriages they don’t want or aren’t ready for and most people get into ridiculous amounts of debt and financial trouble just to have wedding that spend their life paying off. There’s just no point envying other couples - we have no idea what they’re really dealing with. Focus on the positives of the event: get a cute outfit, buy a nice gift for the couple, and book a fancy hotel to make it a bit of a getaway for you or you and your child.
Angelica Malin
Q&A 1. I've recently got divorced and unsure how to navigate my 'new normal' What advice would you give? The new normal will feel strange but you can’t fight it, you have to embrace the change. Lean into the ways you can now choose a life that serves you. That can be the little thing: what things did you not do because of your husband? Shows you like to watch but he didn’t? Watch them all. Music he didn’t like? Blast it, every morning, every day. Decor ideas he wasn’t keen on? Paint your living room that colour, buy that green velvet sofa! Start being unapologetically you. And if you’re creative at all, write it all down. What you’re feeling now is temporary and you’re not going to feel like this in a few weeks, months or years so capturing how you feel right now, as well as being cathartic, will remind you someday in the near future, just how far you’ve come. 2. I'm a single parent and dread going to weddings and engagement parties alone, what tips do you have on overcoming fear when it comes to events like these? The truth is, it can be daunting going to these things alone but honestly, everyone is there for the bride and groom and no-body cares at all who you are with or not with. It’s an added unnecessary pressure that we, as women, often put on ourselves. Go to the wedding and have a good time.
3. All my friends are either married or in long term relationships, I'm finding it hard to find common ground and often feel left out, is there any advice that you may have on this? Get new friends. That sounds harsh and it’s not meant to be, but it’s true. They can still be your friends of course, and you’ll be there for them as they navigate this chapter of their life - but you’re in a different chapter and need to be around people that are too, so you feel good about where you are in life. So actively seek out other single friends to hang out with. Obviously it’s harder to make friends when you’re older, but that’s one of the really good things about social media - you can seek out people you have something in common with. Talk online, suggest going for a coffee, or a drink. And if that sounds daunting, go to places alone, where you’ll likely meet like minded people. I used to go to the theatre alone a lot, networking events, or even gym classes - and made lots of new friends that way when I was single. These people might be outside your usual social circle but once you embrace the change, you’ll begin to have a brilliant time. When you do spend time with your coupled up friends again, you’ll be less likely to feel resentful or left out - and it’ll probably make those relationships stronger. Unattached is available now from all good book stores and online. Style of the city 75

Being the best version of yourself Hello readers! In this column, Style of the City has asked me to share my thoughts on the idea of being the best version of yourself. he idea of being The Best Version of Yourself is something that I have been extremely interested in further understanding. At first, it makes me want to question the statement. What does that actually mean? What is ‘the highest version of myself ’ and why does it matter? This has changed over the last few years but now I believe that actually achieving that very end/highest version of yourself isn’t actually the important part. The important part is that this exercise forces the clarity and structure we need to focus on growing every single day/ week - and that is where the magic lies. Throughout my many years of journaling, I have discovered that my moments of depression have constantly occurred when I have not been growing in any of the main 5 areas of life: Career & Finances, Social & Relationships, Health & Well-being, Spiritual, Contribution. Of course, there are sometimes childhood memories that can have an impact but you could argue that seeking therapy to deal with those issues is a form of growth in Health & Wellbeing, as well as Spiritual.
T
SETTING GOALS All I can do is share what I have been doing for the last 10 years and hope that this structure resonates with you, or at least inspires another way of achieving the same. I know some people have elaborate systems that take up both an hour in the morning as well as the evening I tried it. I gave up within a week as I didn’t have the time and if I am being honest - I’m too lazy. They just help put my mind in a good place before bed. Lastly, freewriting is anything on your mind. Venting about the day, congratulating yourself, a lesson learned, a thought, a special moment, a joke you heard… anything! This daily entry is usually a page in a standard size journal. If you feel motivated to write more, then write more!

LUCA MALACRINO
My Goal & Accountability system consists of: - A Google Document that I update on a yearly basis called: Goals & Growth. - A task-driven journal that I use for 5mins each day called Inspire Now (Amazon) to keep track of the smaller tasks while maintaining balance in all areas. - A standard-lined journal that I use for personal entries in the evening that takes up another 5mins. THESE DOCUMENTS EXPLAINED GOALS & GROWTH: This is where I write out the main 5 areas (+ personal category) and then list out goals for the year below. Under Career & Finance, I list out the different businesses/side hustles I have going on and list 2 or 3 specific goals for each. The personal one is usually something like getting that tattoo I’ve been wanting for the last year, or when thinking of something to cook, focus on learning more about Asian food. They have to be genuinely achievable, specific enough to know when I have achieved it, and know that it’ll make me feel good once achieved. I also like to treat this day as a sacred day. Choose the perfect playlist and find an inspiring coffee shop to make it happen. Inspire Now Journal This is a must for me as it physically sets up the main 5 areas on a weekly basis, as well as breaking it down into digestible days. I also love that there is a reflection page at the end of the week that encourages you to write down your achievements & lessons learned. At the end of each year, I look through the reflective pages and add them to my Goals & Growth document under new sections labeled: Wins and Lessons. The last part is a personal journal. It’s always by my bed and I simply write the Date - Day of the week. x1 thing I did that helped someone today. x2 ‘Wouldn’t it be nice…’ statements Freewriting. The ‘Wouldn’t it be nice…statement is a wish that would help in life right now. I.e Wouldn’t it be nice…if I woke up feeling incredibly healthy tomorrow with massive energy. I.e Wouldn’t it be nice if I smiled the entire way home from work tomorrow.
REST BUT DON’T QUIT. I am not going to pretend that I have never missed a day of doing this. It would be a huge lie. There have been months that have gone by where I have not journaled and it’s usually because I have been busy, tired, stressed, and mad at myself for missing a few days so I say screw it and stop. I usually wait until I feel depressed to start again. The easiest way I have improved this habit is by stating the minimum I do each day. No matter how long, or tough the day is, what will I not give up. For me, the Goals & Growth is easier as it’s one day a year. For the Inspire Now journal - I at least fill out the weekly reflection & planning sheet to use as a reference for the week. For the personal journal - I fill out the first two bullet points and write two sentences for the free writing. I also don’t beat myself up for quitting anymore. The last thing I want to mention is that I believe that we all have ideas of what we can achieve in life that are dictated by the people around us, our current jobs, and the social norms that society has brainwashed us into believing. These are simply glass ceilings that we live under. Smash the glass ceiling. Dream bigger. Set bigger goals. At the end of the day, it’s more about the growth than the goals. Style of the city 77

FOOD / COOKING BYDEI
COOKING ByDei Shelma Dei shares her ‘Pho Ga’ recipe Baby it’s cold outside… During the past few months the british weather has been some what gloomy with rain ,wind and cold temperatures making an appearance every chance it can get. So much that it would make you want to pick up your suitcase and head to a hot & sunny location like Jamaica or Bali. Unfortunately due to the pandemic it isnt that easy to just get up and go. So I thought to myself what can I do to cheer myself up? Of course I thought of cooking and making something that was hot , spicy and of course very tasty. I wanted something that warmed me up , somthing filling but not heavy. Pho Ga came to mind i neber realised how simple the process was until I took a stab and had a go at creating my version of the famous Vietnamese dish. Happy cooking !
INGREDIENTS & GARNISH • 1 organic whole chicken (small) • 1 Tbspn oil • ginger, 1 inch sliced • 1 onion, finely chopped • 2 Tbspn fish sauce • 3 whole star anise • 1 cinnamon stick • 1 Tbspn coriander seeds • ¼ tspn black pepper corns • ¼ tspn chinese five spice powder • 1 tspn coconut sugar • 1 Tspn salt • Dried flat rice noodles 400g/14oz • 4 spring onions • 2 cups mung bean sprouts • 1 cup fresh coriander (cilantro) • 1 cup fresh mint (Vietnamese mint) • 1 cup thai basil (optional) • 1 chili freshly chopped (optional) • 6 lime wedges
Hey Guys, My name is Shelma Dei, my love for food stems from my childhood and also being rather fussy when it comes to food. I am very passionate about food and love to create dishes that spring into mind. I love to experiment with different ingredients, often things you wouldn’t expect to put together. Follow @cookingbydei
METHOD 1 Take a small saucepan add the oil and gently saute the onion and ginger for a couple of minutes until golden. Set aside. 2 Clean and rinse the chicken in cold water, remove excess fat and roughly cut into four pieces. 3 In a large pot place the chicken and top with enough cold water to cover the chicken. Add the onions, ginger, spices, fish sauce and salt. 4 Bring to a boil and then simmer over a low heat uncovered for 25 minutes. Discard any scum that comes to the surface. 5 Check the chicken is cooked, remove with tongs and set aside for shredding into bite sized pieces 6 Add the bones back into the broth and simmer (don't let boil) for another 25 minutes to 60 minutes if time permits. 7 Meanwhile prepare any fresh vegetables and cook the rice noodles according to the packet, do not over cook. 8 Once the broth is cooked discard the bones and strain the broth through a sieve. Taste and season with more fish sauce if needed. 9
Assemble the cooked noodles into bowls. Top with the shredded chicken. Pour the chicken broth evenly over each bowl. Top with carrot, mung beans, fresh herbs and fresh chili as desired. 10 Serve with a lime wedge and chilli sauce if desired

Headline performer 90s RnB legend Shola Ama ensured that our guests were in for a real treat. Against the luxurious backdrop of the Parkgate Hotel, a drinks reception and a succulent three course meal raised money in aid of MAS App, an innovative new app designed to locate defibrillators and promote equality and awareness via local businesses. Presenter and baby columnist Polly James hosted our gala and was on hand to keep the night flowing. Shola Ama gave everyone 90s nostalgia by performing ‘You might need somebody’ along with her other chart-topping favourites, and live DJs brought everyone to their feet. The night was also extra special thanks to Laings Jewellers, who provided goodie bags for guests and a special diamond giveaway prize for guessing how many tiny glass beads were in a cocktail glass, with all proceeds also going to MAS App. A huge thank you to the talented team at Doctor Bobs Balloons Unlimited, who ensured the décor was out of this world. Doctor Bob worked relentlessly to ensure each centrepiece detail was tastefully executed, and the black and gold balloon arch, leading into the seating area truly wowed our guests. The black and gold themed balloons were truly mesmerising, and all the tables had the added luxury of LED light-up centrepieces. There was no shortage of delights for those with a sweet tooth, thanks to KB Event Styling and Balloons who provided a dazzling glitter wall along with a charming sweet cart for guests to pick their own delicacies. All in all, a fun filled night and very much needed after more than a year of hospitality uncertainties. We look forward to hosting more events via our sister brand Style Nights.
