PUBLISHER’S NOTE

Mayday Mayday… Sell your home … Buy a home! The bright month of May is the ideal time to do some springcleaning, or, maybe do a complete change altogether and sell your home in this crazy seller’s market. Cashing-in, a remodeling job or just reorganizing the house maybe just the ticket to a great and renewed start! A bit of spring-cleaning is good for the soul. In our fast-paced society, I will be the first to admit that it is far too easy to get caught up in life’s overwhelming demands and challenges and sometimes we lose focus on what is really important in life. However, here is my call for you to slow down your stride and calmly allow life to catch up with you. Perhaps take a break from whatever is concerning your mind the most, step outside into the rejuvenating spring air, and think for a moment about what really brings you joy and happiness. Although it may seem that only billionaires have the monetary wealth to make a valuable difference in the world, always remember that any of us can play a part in benefiting the lives of those in need. Whether donating your time, talents, or just a word of encouragement, it is possible for you to help others regardless of your station in life. I hope that by reading this issue of Orlando Style you will be inspired and empowered to answer the call to begin a fresh start this spring and bask in the simple pleasures of life. This season, take the time to enjoy the beautiful Florida nature, delicious local food, evenings out with good friends, or with your loving family, and most of all, finding what joy means to you. This entire issue is again packed with great articles and interviews, unmatched in our region and we remain proud that we continually raise the bar of publishing excellence here at home. We welcome your input, criticism or praise and ask that you continue to participate by emailing us at: info@styleToMe. com and sharing your thoughts, some of which will soon be published as space permits. As we slowly get out from under this horrific pandemic and seeing the positive light at the end of the tunnel, here at Style Magazines, we continue to forge ahead with our efforts to support and welcome back our loyal advertisers in getting their message across to you, our readers. We’ll continue to work tirelessly to keep you informed with Style! “Imagine all the people Livin’ life in peace…”

CITY NEWS

Happy halfway to New Years! Wait a minute--did I really just write that? YIKES! It feels like we were just talking about Valentine’s Day and now it’s already May. The only thing moving faster than time in Orlando is the pace of events happening in our amazing city! Month after month, you’re guaranteed to find thrills and entertaining events throughout the City Beautiful and last month was no different. Check out some of our favorite highlights below, just in case you missed it! April 1st kicked off a tremendous weekend of influence and elegance, and that’s no April Fool’s joke! Black Business Weekend is the culmination of three events: The Legacy Gala, The Black Business Summit & Expo, and the Black Biz Brunch. Each brought together premiere black business owners, black professionals, and supporters of black business to connect culture and creativity. With proceeds benefiting Legacy Ventures’ Project Future, the Legacy Gala invited attendees to immerse themselves in nobility, distinction, and majesty as they were transported into the Royal Kingdom of Zamunda during an elegant evening of breathtaking décor, dazzling entertainment, and exquisite dining. Attendees even had the opportunity to shake hands with history as guest speaker and World War II Tuskegee pilot Daniel Keel shared stories of legacy, culture, and history. The fun continued on Saturday with The Black Business Summit & Expo focused on developing and promoting black and brown businesses from across Florida. On Sunday, the festivities came to a close with posh networking at its finest at the Black Biz Brunch where black professionals came together for a celebration of growth and success. Year after year, the Runway To Hope Spring Fashion Soirée never fails to bring an unforgettable evening of bravery and beauty to the city of Orlando. On April 2nd, this beloved event returned to one of the country’s largest and most beautiful ballrooms at Rosen Shingle Creek, a proud corporate sponsor of the event. Co-founders Mark and Josie NeJame established Runway to Hope in 2010 and it has since grown to become an inspiring, truly signature fundraising event. Now in its 10th year, the highlight of the evening is a special fashion show featuring incredible and brave children, ages 2 to 18, all who are currently battling or have overcome cancer. The courageous children walk the runway arm in arm with one of the dozens of national and local celebrity escorts as they show off the powerful beauty of their unwavering spirits. This year’s celebrity co-hosts, Johnny Magic and Cheryl Burke, emceed the night and led the audience in celebrating the strength and hope of these beautiful children. Together we raised more than one million dollars for the fight. Consider joining all of us at Orlando Style in helping to support Runway To Hope’s mission and these amazing children by visiting www.runwaytohope.org. Outdoor fun and family activities drew thousands of Central Floridians to Lake Eola from April 2nd-3rd for Spring Fiesta in the Park! Located in the heart of downtown Orlando, the tradition returned for its 33rd year to showcase the beauty of springtime at Lake Eola. Hosted by Cox Media Group and the City of Orlando, the petfriendly event included more than 200 artist and crafter booths, food vendors, live music, a huge children’s play area and more. While live entertainment at the Walt Disney Amphitheater was a highlight of the free event series, the real stars of the show were the artists and crafters that came from all over the United States to display and sell their original work. Spanning the entire walkway of Lake Eola, The Fiesta in the Park Series was truly fun for the whole family. Voted “#1 Best Wedding Expo,” the Florida Wedding Expo returned on April 20th and invited newly engaged couples and prospective

brides to compare over 75 of the area’s most popular vendors. From tasting gourmet appetizers, entrees and decadent desserts to bubbly and themed beverages at the cash bar, there were plenty of food options for guests to enjoy! Attendees also met the best in the industry when it comes to photography, videography, DJs & entertainment, the latest photo booths, wedding gowns, tuxedos and bridal party fashions, floral & decor, event rentals, wedding backdrops, draping, lighting, bouquets, gift registries, favors and so much more. Naturally the highlight of the day was the ultimate wedding fashion show, ‘Style Down the Aisle’ which invited future brides to preview all the latest styles to find their perfect dress and wedding party looks. There was truly something for everyone at this stunning event. What do you call Oktoberfest in April? Springtoberfest of course! On Saturday April 23rd, beer enthusiasts from around the city were invited to join the German American Society of Central Florida for fabulous German food and plenty of beer on tap from German breweries. The festivities featured a traditional flag parade in addition to live musical entertainment and dancing all day long, both outside in the Biergarten and inside the Clubhouse. Even non-beer drinkers were able to enjoy the action with a full-service bar in the air-conditioned Alpine-themed Clubhouse. All this added up to the very best in Gemütlichkeit.... the warm feeling of comfort, cheer and camaraderie. So raise your beer steins high in a German toast ...Zicke, zacke hoi... hoi... hoi... und Prost. Caribbean Fusion has been a festival celebrating Caribbean/American culture, music and diversity for the past 24+ years. On April 24th, the annual Caribbean Fusion Festival once again took over Kissimmee Lakefront Park for the first post-covid return of this beloved event. The free family festival is sometimes called the Caribbean Family reunion as everyone comes together to celebrate the Fusion of Caribbean Culture during a full day of fun and food. Attendees enjoyed everything from steel bands and dancers to reggae, soca and latin music by live performers. The vision of the Caribbean Fusion Festival is to recognize and celebrate the diversity of Caribbean people and to bring that ONENESS of the culture through food, arts, crafts, and music to Osceola County. For the Caribbean/American population throughout Central Florida, this was a must attend event that showcased the best of Caribbean/American Culture with its foods, music, and arts. Oceans of flavor and fun are waiting at SeaWorld! Since February 4th, park guests have been setting sail on a taste adventure savoring over 200 mouthwatering options from international cuisines to imported craft beers to unique wines. Fortunately you can still take part in the fun as every Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from now until May 8 is Sea World’s Seven Seas Food Festival. From foodies to families, everyone will find tasty delights among more than 200 distinct (and mostly new this year!) offerings. It’s the most they’ve ever had, and it makes Seven Seas the biggest theme park food festival in Orlando. Explore more than 50 fresh global cuisine choices to pair with over 75 wine and cocktail selections and 75 craft beers. Revitalize your taste buds as you share this welcoming, open-air experience. Add a taste of rock, country, Latin, or 90s throwback sounds at our live music shows, and enjoy even more diverse entertainment and surprises at special times like Cinco de Mayo this month. With exquisite flavors to top off exhilarating coasters and extraordinary animals, the Seven Seas Food Festival is a voyage to stir the soul—and warm the belly!

Caroline Fischer Espi First Choice Law, P.A. EMPATHY, TENACITY AND INTELLIGENCE. These are words that define Caroline Fischer Espi’s career journey and work ethic. She not only commits herself to outwork her opponents, she commits to working smarter than them. Caroline never loses sight of the “human touch” needed to guide her clients through their trials in a time of hardship. Whether in a courtroom or in a settlement conference, she is always prepared and that is reflected in her meteoric career rise and the universal respect gained in a still male-dominated industry of personal injury law. After accomplishing her educational goals, Caroline moved to Florida where she now lives full-time and practices law. Today, she devotes her time and boundless energy to helping those who have been injured and dedicates herself to her own personal injury practice. IN THE KNOW

Hats Up!

Kentucky Derby There are few American sporting events with the history and popularity of the Kentucky Derby. Its rich traditions – sipping a mint julep, donning a beautiful hat, and joining fellow race fans in singing “My Old Kentucky Home” – transcend the Kentucky Derby from just a sporting event, making it a celebration of southern culture and a true icon of Americana. The Kentucky Derby is the longest running sporting event in the United States, dating back to 1875. The Kentucky Derby’s long history began in 1872, when Meriwether Lewis Clark, the grandson of William Clark – of the famed pair Lewis and Clark – traveled to Europe. While there, Clark attended the Epsom Derby in England, a wellknown horse race run since 1780, and also fraternized with the French Jockey Club, a group that developed another popular horse race, the Grand Prix de Paris Longchamps. Clark was inspired by his travels and experiences, and, upon his return, was determined to create a spectacle horse racing event in the States. With the help of his uncles John & Henry Churchill, who gifted Clark the necessary land to develop a racetrack, and by formally organizing a group of local race fans to be named the Louisville Jockey Club, Clark and his new club raised funds to build a permanent racetrack in Louisville, Kentucky. On May 17th, 1875, the racetrack opened its gates and the Louisville Jockey Club sponsored the very first Kentucky Derby. A total of fifteen three-year-old Thoroughbred horses raced one and a half miles in front of a cheering crowd of approximately 10,000 spectators. Aristides was the first winner of the Kentucky Derby.

Today, 20 horses compete in the Kentucky Derby, which is a larger field size than most horse races; where on average 8 horses race against one another. The 20 horses racing in the Kentucky Derby must first travel along the Road to the Kentucky Derby, which is a series of 35 races taking place at tracks across the country and the world. Points are awarded to the top 4 horses that finish in each of those 35 races, and the 20 horses with the most points earn a spot in the starting gate in the Kentucky Derby race. The Kentucky Derby winning purse is $2 million. The Kentucky Derby takes place on the first Saturday in May every year, and typically draws a crowd of 155,000 people. It is the longest continually held sporting event in America, and it is one of the most prestigious horse races in the world. Often called “The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports”, the Kentucky Derby receives this nickname from the approximate length of time it takes the winner to run from the starting gate to the finish line. The Kentucky Derby is the first race within the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing, where it is followed by the Preakness Stakes race and the Belmont Stakes race. As with any major event, the Kentucky Derby has undergone various changes over the course of three centuries. From shortening the distance of the race, the introduction of traditions like draping the winning horse in a garland of roses, to the growing size of Derby crowds, the Kentucky Derby has embraced the change of time, while honoring the integrity of the spectacle race set forth by Meriwether Lewis Clark.

The tradition of the Kentucky Derby hat began at the inception of the race; the founder Col. Meriwether Lewis Clark Jr. wanted to ensure a good crowd at his event. At the time the race track had a reputation as immoral and dangerous so Clark looked to other successful races for inspiration. According to the Kentucky Derby Museum “He loaded up a wagon full of high society women and they were going door-to-door telling their friends, ‘We’re going to have a picnic at the racetrack.” And it worked! The wealthy class poured into the stadium in their finest, as a place to see and be seen. The tradition of the hat lives on as a fun element to the races (and more practically to keep the sun out of spectator’s eyes).

CELEBRITY SOUP

ACTORS WHO’VE

CRITICIZED

THEIR OWN FILMS

LET’S TAKE A LOOK AT SOME OF HOLLYWOOD’S BIGGEST STARS AND THE MOVIES THEY WOULD LIKE TO FORGET By Riesa Pascal 38

| STYLETOME.COM

CELEBRITY SOUP

No one is immune to feelings of regret and this is true even for Hollywood’s elite. When it comes to projects that some actors wish they could erase from history, you may be surprised to see quite a few films you love on the list. While some actors hate to watch themselves in any movie regardless of the quality, these stars in particular more simply just regret being talked into an awful role...and they weren’t afraid to say so.

VIOLA DAVIS VS. THE HELP

HALLE BERRY VS. CATWOMAN

In a 2018 interview with The New York Times concerning her past challenges and regrets, Viola Davis spoke about how she regretted her role in The Help. The movie follows a white woman writing a book about the lives of Black maids working in Mississippi in the midst of the Civil Rights Movement. Davis offered some clarification to her comments saying that it wasn’t her collaborators that made her regret her decision, but rather the content of the film itself as she felt it did not accurately capture the black experience

After making history as the first black woman to win a best actress Oscar for Monster’s Ball, Halle Berry took her career in a completely different direction and went on to star in the widely criticized Catwoman. Not only did the film have nothing to do with the Batman universe, it was so bad that she was even nominated for Worst Actress at the Razzies. Berry was a good sport about the nomination and showed up in person to accept her award saying, “First of all I want to thank Warner Brothers. Thank you for putting me in a piece of sh*t, God awful movie. It was just what my career needed.”

RICHARD GERE VS. PRETTY WOMAN

Careful ladies, this one is going to sting! In an interview with Woman’s Day back in 2012, Richard Gere tore apart the chick flick classic Pretty Woman by referring to it as a “silly rom-com” even though the film made Gere a household name and saw Julia Roberts become ‘America’s Sweetheart.’ To be fair, Gere only hated the film because he felt that it wrongly glamorized Wall Street-type men. ALEC GUINNESS VS. STAR WARS

It may seem unbelievable that anyone could regret being in what is likely the most recognized trilogy in the world, but it appears that Alec Guinness is the exception. On multiple occasions, the actor has expressed regret for playing ObiWan Kenobi in the original Star Wars trilogy. He felt that the film was “fairy tale rubbish” and called the dialogue “lamentable.” He didn’t hold back in his resentment saying, “Apart from the money, I regret having embarked on the film.” SHIA LEBEOUF VS. HIS ENTIRE FILMOGRAPHY

There’s a popular saying to not “bite the hand that feeds you,” but it appears that Shia LaBeouf may be a little unfamiliar with the phrase. The successful actor has spoken out in numerous interviews about every single one of his blockbuster roles from the last decade. He especially had regrets for his participation in films like Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull or Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, saying that the films lacked heart and “dropped the ball.” Harrison Ford, LaBeouf ’s co-star and Mr. Indiana Jones himself, commented on the shock revelation calling LaBeouf “a f***ing idiot.”

ROBERT PATTINSON VS. THE TWILIGHT SAGA

Speaking of the Batman universe, before he was dominating 2022 box office sales as Bruce Wayne in The Batman, Robert Pattingson was only famous for playing the sparkly vampire Edward Cullen. Unfortunately for all you Twilight Saga fans, Pattinson was a closeted hater of the franchise even before accepting the role that put him on the map, but he certainly hasn’t been too shy to speak about his regret since. In fact, 5 minutes on YouTube is all you need to find numerous clips of Pattinson ripping into Twilight and Stephanie Meyers at various press interviews, GEORGE CLOONEY VS. BATMAN & ROBIN

Long before Pattinson’s The Batman, there was the 1997 film Batman & Robin. Joel Schumacher’s contribution to the “Batman” franchise quickly became an ongoing joke within film circles, and George Clooney has been more than happy to join in on the mockery. In a 2011 interview with Total Film, George Clooney admitted that the film was a pile of hot trash by saying, “With hindsight it’s easy to look back at this and go ‘Woah, that was really s*** and I was really bad in it.’” JACKIE CHAN VS. RUSH HOUR

Okay, I have to admit that it was hard not to take this one personally as Rush Hour is one of my all-time favorite comedies, but apparently Jackie Chan doesn’t agree with me! Chan spoke of his Rush Hour films saying, “When we finished filming, I felt very disappointed because it was a movie I didn’t appreciate and I did not like the action scenes involved. I felt the style of action was too Americanized and I didn’t understand the American humor.” STYLETOME.COM |

MERCEDES-BENZ GLC: EVERYTHING WE KNOW ABOUT THE NEXT-GENERATION LUXURY CROSSOVER

40

| STYLETOME.COM

TOYS

Mercedes-Benz has announced that the next generation of its Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class mid-size crossover has completed its final winter testing near Arjeplog, Sweden just in time for the warming spring weather. The GLC is the brand's best-selling model, full-stop, and we expect a full overhaul for the upcoming next-gen model, the details of which Mercedes hasn't been shy about.

“The third-gen GLC will start off with the brand’s M254 engine, according to Mercedes, which is a turbocharged 2.0-liter I-4 making 255 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque.” The setup is electrified with a 48-volt starteralternator unit on the transmission that contributes an output of 23 horsepower and 147 lb-ft of torque to the new base powertrain. An exhaust treatment system is also packaged directly on the engine. We expect the updated model will keep its nine-speed automatic gearbox, and will likely be available again in rear- or all-wheel drive setups. The current model gets 22 mpg city, 27 mpg highway. Mercedes says the updated GLC will also get overhauled versions of some of its safety and driver-assistance systems. Active Distance Assist has updated its stationary vehicle response maneuvering speed from a max of 37 mph now up to 60 mph. Active Steering Assist will get improved performance on bendy “country roads,” improved freeway lane-centering, and more lane detection features thanks to new 360-degree camera tech featured on the next-gen GLC. Mercedes also describes a “Digital Light” with “projection functions” and customizable “Coming/Leaving Home” animations that play out on the ground in front of the car, using the vehicle’s headlights. Traffic Sign Assist will now recognize signage on overhead structures and in construction

zones, including conditional signage like “slippery when wet,” with new warnings to alert the driver in various scenarios, including when they are about to run a stop sign or red light. Mercedes also says its parking systems will get improved surround sensors and better low speed maneuverability. INTERIOR CHANGES

Mercedes has already confirmed some random interior details for the new GLC, too. It will get an all-new three-spoke steering wheel with redesigned control panels for navigation, phone, entertainment, cruise control and proximity control buttons. The main dashboard will get a 11.9-inch central LCD display, and a 12.3-inch monitor sits behind the steering wheel for the driver. The third-gen GLC will get the updated MBUX user experience infotainment system, with updated “Hey Mercedes” voice assistant commands, and new augmented reality features that project addresses and details onto the infotainment screen’s exterior surround-view live video feed. A special off-road menu with an optional “transparent hood” function that utilizes the 360-degree camera tech to show the ground beneath the front of the vehicle on the infotainment screen for better maneuverability. MERCEDES’ BESTSELLER, UPDATED

So far, more than 2.5 million copies of the Mercedes-Benz GLC have been sold since the model line was introduced back in 2008, when it went by the GLK name. It quickly became a segment leader in the compact luxury crossover class, and is the best-selling model series from the Mercedes-Benz portfolio to date. The latest model, which is expected to go on sale in 2023, is still based on the C-Class sedan, but will feature technical highlights from more premium models like the flagship S-Class, as well.

LOSE THE

SUNSCREEN 5

NATURAL WAYS TO PREVENT SUNBURN

Summer is finally upon us and here in the Sunshine State, we are sure to have some fun and catch some of those much-needed rays. However, enjoying the sun can often be complicated with fears of sunburn or long term skin damage. Lathering up with high SPF levels in our sunscreens is frequently the solution offered to calm those fears, but it may not be as effective as we’ve come to believe. Jam packed with chemicals that may be harmful to our bodies, sunscreen is full of parabens, toxic chemical solvents, harsh alcohols, fragrance chemicals and petroleum oils and advertised with a confusing and misleading SPF system.

54

| STYLETOME.COM

By Melissa Zeise

It’s time to be smarter and more natural in the way that we protect our skin; working from the inside-out. You’ve probably noticed that the health of your skin is dependent on what you do, or don’t eat (i.e. eating that entire chocolate Easter bunny back in April sent your skin reminiscing through old middle school photos with a breakout of tween proportions). Therefore, it’s expected that healthier diet choices can positively affect your skin's overall health. Here are some foods and vitamins you should consume in order to protect and prepare your skin for the summer sun:

LIVING ‘N STYLE

“IT’S TIME TO BE SMARTER AND MORE NATURAL IN THE WAY THAT WE PROTECT OUR SKIN; WORKING FROM THE INSIDE-OUT.”

1. SATURATED FATS

That’s right; eating healthy fats can benefit your overall health in many ways, but specifically these fats are vital to the strength of your skin. Rich, unprocessed fats found in olive, coconut and cod liver oils are crucial to building and repairing cells, including those that build skin tissues. Eating healthy amounts of saturated fats will strengthen your skin, starting at its foundation.

2. VITAMIN D

…Wait, isn’t that the vitamin that made the sun so popular in the first place? Although the sun is a natural source of vitamin D, it can also be obtained through fermented cod liver oil and will in turn protect your skin from UV radiation and increase your tolerance to sun exposure.

3. ASTAXANTHIN

Found in trout, microalgae, shrimp, and most commonly in Pacific salmon, Astaxanthin is an antioxidant gaining popularity for its many health benefits including the relief of joint pain, endurance, heart health, and healthier skin. Although Astaxanthin is famous for the beautiful pink colors of the animals that consume it regularly, it can help keep you from turning pink from a bad sun burn. Just as this antioxidant can affect the color of the animals and organisms that thrive on it, Astaxanthin also protects these animals from the sun. If this little gem can keep a flamingo from sun damage, it can do the same for you this summer. Furthermore, sunburn is actually a form of inflammation, and Astaxanthin fights this reaction by working as an anti-inflammatory.

4. MUSTARD OIL

This super oil is said to lighten dark spots, improve complexion, protect chapped lips, work as a natural skin cleanser and benefit hair health as well as working as a natural sunscreen. More than a popular vegetable oil in India, mustard oil is both delicious in recipes as well as useful as a topical oil. Containing high levels of vitamin E and a thick consistency makes this oil ideal as a natural sunscreen that can be applied directly to your skin as vitamin E naturally protects the skin from harsh sun rays and other environmental toxins.

BEAUTY Battle of the beauty boxes! There are countless beauty subscription boxes that can be delivered to your door every month, full of amazing, full and sample size beauty products for you to enjoy. Some of the more popular boxes are Boxycharm, Birchbox, Ipsy, Glossybox, Play! By Sephora, and more. As you can see, there are quite a few to choose from, so how do you go about picking the best one? Well, it depends on a couple of things: how much money you want to spend and whether you want full sized products or travel sized products. Each box is unique in their own way, but all are perfect for every beauty lover out there. Full Sized Beauty Boxes Boxycharm - $21/month: provides you with 4 to 5 full sized beauty products with retail value of over $100. The box includes popular brands like Tarte, Becca and ColourPop, and includes anything from full-sized eyeshadow pallets to makeup brushes. Glossybox - $21/month: similar to Boxycharm in the quality and choice of products, but Glossybox tailors to each subscribers preferences so not everyone gets the same box. Sample Size Beauty Boxes Play! By Sephora - $10/month: provides the subscriber with 5 sample size beauty products + an additional perfume sample. Brands include any brand Sephora carries. Birchbox - $10/month: similar to Glossybox in that they customize each subscribers box via the subscribers beauty profile, but they give you sample sizes as opposed to full sized products. They offer a wide variety of product samples, and even offer a men’s box! Ipsy - $10/month: offers 5 sample size beauty products per month that are chosen based on the subscribers beauty profile.

5. COCONUT OIL

Mmmm... what’s more tropical than coconut, right? When applied to your skin, coconut oil can actually work as a powerful natural sunscreen. Just like Astaxanthin, this oil has antioxidants that work to protect skin from sun damage and strengthen your skin's defenses overall. Go natural this summer with these five sunscreen alternatives.

sadly, many of us fall very, very short of that elusive dream. There are lash serums and other tricks said to “grow” your eyelashes of course, but after hundreds of dollars down the drain, I’m not too sure if they actually work. Luckily, there are false lashes that can actually look quite natural. We compared the three most popular kinds of lash enhancements below. Eyelash Extensions

Eyelash extensions are individual eyelashes that a technician applies to your own eyelashes. It increases the length, fullness, and thickness of your natural lashes. The best part? They can last on your lashes for over a month and look absolutely amazing. They also save you a lot of time getting ready - you don’t have to worry about eye makeup! The worst part? They cost quite a bit more than buying a pack of fake lashes from the drugstore.

Magnetic Lashes

These eyelash enhancers have magnetic strips in each pair of lashes. Each eye has 2 lash strips, one strip to go above your lashes and another strip to go below your lashes. Once they’re in range of each other they lock together, encasing your real eyelashes in between, giving you full set of lashes in just a few seconds. They’re around the same price point as glue-on lashes - you just don’t have to mess around with all the glue! Glue-on Lashes

Glue-on eyelashes have been around forever. They come in many different styles and you can trim them up to fit your desired shape and size. The best thing about these lashes are that they’re reusable and cheap. The worst part is that they can take longer to apply and sometimes the glue starts lifting throughout the day. It takes some practice to apply them correctly, but once you get the hang of them, they’re a breeze!

National Cataract Awareness Month! 5 Signs of Cataracts to look out for • CLOUDY DAYS The world will start to look blurry or cloudy and will worsen with time. •NO MORE LATE NIGHTS As cataracts become more advanced, they begin to darken with a yellow/brown hue. This affects night vision and makes nighttime activities, like driving, more difficult. •BRIGHT LIGHTS Being sensitive to bright lights is a common symptom of cataracts. The glare of bright lights can be painful. • DOUBLE TROUBLE Lens clouding in a cataract can lead you to see two or more images of a single object. • HALOS The clouding of the lens can result in diffraction of light entering your eye. This can cause a halo to appear around light sources, or rings around every light. If you have any of these symptoms, go see your eye doctor.

A BEER A DAY KEEPS THE DOCTOR AWAY? Health Benefits Of Drinking A Cold One! We have heard stories and read articles about how having a glass of red wine a couple days a week (or everyday) is good for most people because some red wine has the ability to improve cholesterol, fight free radical damage, help manage diabetes, etc., but what about beer? It may come as a surprise to some, but beer has quite a few health benefits that we should know about. Beer is an alcoholic beverage brewed from cereal grains which are responsible for its nutritional values. Hops (which is typically used to make IPA’s, Pale Ales and others) are the female flower of the hop plant, which gives some beer its tangy, bitter taste. The green buds are filled with chemicals known as bitter acids. Bitter acids are powerful inflammation fighters and helps both prevent and treating viral respiratory infections. Bitter acids may also improve digestion. Certain types of beer trigger the release of gastric acid from stomach cells which is key for both digesting food and controlling the growth of dangerous gut

bacteria. Researchers found that the more bitter acids a beer has, the greater the response. Beer is a great source of silicon, which is important for building and maintaining healthy bones. The mineral found in beer helps increase bone density, thereby preventing the risk of fractures and osteoporosis. Beer also helps polish your teeth. The bacteria that lives in our mouths and causes tooth decay and gum disease, research showed that beer helped block the activity of bad bacteria. It even beat out black tea, raspberry and all other plant extracts that were tested in this study. As you can see, having a beer has more benefit to our bodies than just having a good time. So kick back, grab a cold one and lose the guilt over your nightly ale! Please drink responsibly and always ask your doctor if you are able to drink alcohol.

Month of

MINDFULNESS By Maha Chaudhry

The month of May is symbolic for the blooming of flowers after April showers. We celebrate the love of our mothers this month, and some celebrate graduations and family vacations. Though the month signifies these traditions and more, it also brings to attention, Mental Health Awareness. As we enter the month, there is no better time to sit back with a warm cup of comfort and reflect on our wellbeing, and all the ways we can support ourselves and each other to take the much-needed time to decompress, release, and consciously unwind. Here are five simple ways you can practice balancing your wellbeing and practice mindfulness:

1. Surround yourself in nature: There is so much

beauty and joy that comes from nature. According to the American Psychological Association, research finds that spending time in nature has direct cognitive benefits on our brain. In other words, nature can serve as an instant boost to your mood which aids in lowering stress levels. Tip: Find a calm space, some might refer to it as their happy place, and if you already have one - make it a point to visit routinely. This can be a park, your backyard, or any place that brings you peace. While you’re there, keep an open mind, take it all in, and enjoy.

2. Keep a gratitude journal: Expressing gratitude regularly is a wonderful mindfulness practice as it redirects your attention to the positive attributes of daily occurrences. By giving thanks, you are welcoming more contentment into your life. NPR highlighted research from the Clinical Psychology Review which recognizes the many benefits of giving thanks and counting blessings, such as: Better sleep, lower stress, and improved interpersonal relationships - just to name a few examples. Tip: Keep a notebook or journal by your bed - try to make it a point to write down a few things you want to give gratitude to from the day prior or the day at hand. You can do this first thing in the morning to start the day on a positive note, or before going to bed blissfully.

3. Deep Breathing: Another form of emotional

release is through simply breathing deeply. This is also a well-known form of meditation that has many health benefits. According to Healthline, deep breathing helps regulate blood pressure and brings the body into a relaxed state while releasing the stress hormone, cortisol. Tip: Find a comfortable position, whether it’s a comfortable

chair with your feet planted on the ground, or a cozy spot on the floor, and close your eyes. Take three deep breaths. Breathe in slowly, hold at inhale for about 7-10 seconds, and slowly release at exhale. Ready to take it to another level? There are many forms of breathing exercise readily available through various mediation applications and online. Disclaimer: Your shoulders may begin to feel much lighter.

4. Daily walks: Daily walks have multiple

benefits when it comes to physical health, such as cardiovascular health, but daily walks are also great for unwinding the mind and practicing being in the moment. Tip: next time you are taking a walk, focus diligently on the scenery around you. Observe what you see, hear, and feel. These sensations can open pathways to creativity and greater awareness.

5. Practice giving back: There are so many

benefits to giving back, and many of them are similar to the benefits mentioned above. In a compilation done by the Cleveland Clinic, the health benefits of giving contributes to increased self-esteem, less depression, lower stress levels and even a longer life, not to mention other benefits like empathy. If you have ever heard the saying “What you put out, you get back,” then you know it can relate directly to the feeling that comes from giving back. Giving back goes beyond monetary ways - it takes so many forms. Simply put, it means showing up for others. Tip: Practice empathy and kindness in daily life. This can be a simple gesture like offering help or support, whether it’s to a loved one or stranger, or as a volunteer in your local community.

Stephanie Bowman Visionary and Founder of One Heart for Women and Children Stephanie Bowman is an example of how far a simple act of kindness can go. In 1999, she went from homeless to having her life back all because a few individuals believed in her. With an act of kindness from a foster family, Stephanie went from having little to no hope, to having a strong sense of self-belief. Through belief and determination, she managed to get herself the treatment she needed and win back full custody of her children. From that point forward, her life started shifting in an upward spiral, where love and compassion served as common themes in transformation. Stephanie trusts each word of encouragement created a ripple effect in which each lesson learned created another. Ultimately, the ripples are what created the person she is today - an empowered woman and coach, and the founder of One Heart for Women and Children. One Heart for Women and Children is celebrating 15 years of giving back. For the last 15 years, the organization that is strictly community-based, has been providing services to the Orlando community. Initially the goal for One Heart was to connect people to resources that were available in the community. However, in the years since its founding, it has grown into much more. It is a food pantry, a thrift shop, and overall, a loving space. In the first year alone, One Heart helped supply 150 people with food, clothing and furniture. In addition, 26 children had Christmas presents they otherwise wouldn’t have received. During the 2020 pandemic, One Heart successfully provided enough food for over 6 million meals and provided resources to help over 250 people get back to work. The team at One Heart isn’t stopping there. There are more plans to come, including team building opportunities for groups and companies that wish to participate in helping the community grow educationally and informatively. Though there is no lack in volunteers, the opportunity to support is always encouraged. There’s a mobile distribution that takes place once a month, separate from the food pantry at One Heart. This requires roughly 70-90 volunteers. The initiative gives away over 25,000 pounds of food to hundreds of families through a drive-thru. For Stephanie, One Heart is a lifestyle, not just a mission. The experience changed her life and many others for the better. “In the last 15 years we have had thousands of volunteers gift of their talents and time, and each one has had an impact on the mission

and my heart,” she said. The firm belief is that with a grateful heart, anything is possible. Stephanie recalls a life-changing moment in which a mom had come to One Heart after just hearing about her cancer diagnosis. She was uncertain of how One Heart could help, but nonetheless, One Heart found a way. The concerned mom came in with worry and left with a smile, a meal, and a game plan. Within two weeks, she had an oncologist and a safe place for herself and children. It is moments like these that remind Stephanie and all the wonderful One Heart supporters and volunteers, the meaningful work that comes from spreading kindness. I love the life and woman I am today and that didn’t happen overnight,” Stephanie shares. “It has happened with a sprinkle of love, encouragement and empowerment from hundreds of people in my life.” This corresponds to Stephanie’s belief that we are not meant to live this life alone because it’s experience and people that shape the creation of who we are. If you’re interested in volunteering with One Heart, www. oneheartorlando.org offers all the ways you can support. Ongoing items beyond financial contributions include: canned goods, gift cards, clothing, household furniture and goods. Collectively, we can help support One Heart’s mission of building people back up - one person at a time. Written by Maha Chaudhry

Patrice and Terence Phillips of Something Fishy Patrice and her husband Terence Phillips were both working 9-5 jobs before life took a culinary turn. Patrice was a dedicated executive assistant for a non-profit while Terence worked in IT. It was in 2016, the two decided to pursue Terence’s life-long dream of owning a restaurant, and thus Something Fishy was born.

The restaurant is family-owned and operated by husband, wife and kids - Gabby, Ken and Chris. Gabby is an Artist who helps with the design and style of the restaurant, while Ken plays the role of general manager and one of the chefs; and when Chris isn’t busy serving the country as a U.S. Marine, you can find him serving your favorite dish. Something Fishy was a stand-alone business in Apopka until last year when a second location arrived in Altamonte Springs. Both locations are committed to serving the same purpose: Feeding customers fresh and delicious seafood. The menu serves options like fresh bowls with ahi tuna, wild caught fish, or Argentinian shrimp, in addition to sandwiches, tacos, and platters that leave you wanting more. Patrice and Terence believe in the importance of giving back and actively do so by donating to local causes and nonprofits. During the Covid19 pandemic, the family at Something Fishy served local police, firemen, hospital workers, and teachers. Along with the help of the Apopka community, the restaurant made certain to feed and care for all essential workers. The cozy atmosphere at either location serves as the epitome of a family-owned restaurant, where you are treated graciously from the moment you walk in. Creating that experience was especially important for head chef, Terence. Since opening Something Fishy six years ago, Both Patrice and Terence agree that the years have been some of the best of their lives. You can learn more about Something Fishy, and even order online by visiting: somethingfishyrestaruants.com. Make sure to stop by the restaurant if you’re craving fresh seafood with a side of great hospitality.

THE CLASSIC MARGARITA The famous cocktail to celebrate Cinco de Mayo Of the hundreds of creation myths for the classic margarita (who wouldn’t want the cred for this highly sought-after drink?), the most widely accepted story is of Francisco “Pancho” Morales in 1942, who formulated a drink for a customer at his bar who ordered a Magnolia, something Morales had no idea how to make. Instead of admitting to his ignorance, Morales’ bartender pride prompted him to mix together the best tequila he had, juice from his freshest lime, and a dash of his favorite triple sec. He finished the drink off with a salted rim. Needless to say, the customer loved it. Nowadays, many people add agave syrup to sweeten it up, along with a

extra slice of lime to garnish. Since that fateful day in 1942 when Morales created the classic margarita, lovers everywhere have made the margarita their own - creating everything from fruity, blackberry-grapefruit margaritas to spicy, apricot ones. Margaritas are so widely enjoyed that you can get them almost anywhere. On Cinco de Mayo they’re even more popular, with many Americans consuming a margarita (or three) to celebrate. According to the Daily Meal, margaritas accounted for 47% of cocktails sold on Cinco de Mayo and, unsurprisingly, the United States consumes twice as much tequila as the country that invented it, Mexico.
