KANYE VOWS TO WIN BACK KIM Rapper Kanye West has split with his girlfriend Venetria following a 3-month romance and has vowed to get back with his ex Kim in a heartwarming appeal. West, aged 44, split with his 22-year-old model girlfriend and unfollowed her on Instagram – just days after declaring his love to ex Kim at a charity concert begging her to “come running back to him.” The news comes as Kim is reportedly getting closer to NFL player Pete Davidson after being seen cosying up

with him on regular nights out in LA. Kanye, who is prone to regular public outbursts, famously calling Kim’s mum and manager, Kris Jong Un, just days before his split with Kim last year, was performing at a charity concert in December when he poured his heart out to his ex. Kim has yet to respond to the outburst - but sources say she has moved on and is making her best efforts to co-parent with Kanye. Things like this make it that much harder, sources have said.

MR BIG IS IN BIG TROUBLE Actor Chris Noth, best known for his role as Mr Big in ‘Sex & The City,’ has been accused of sexual assault by multiple women. Shortly after the HBO premiere of ‘And Just Like That’ in December 2021, three women have come forward saying he assaulted them. One woman claims the actor raped her, another two claim assault and there is a fourth case of his ex-partner model Beverley Johnson who filed a restraining order against him in 1995 saying

14 SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 05

he threatened to kill her, her daughter and her dog. Pretty

severe allegations. The actor has reputed the

claims and attempted to clear his name - but Hollywood is not buying it. The age old “there’s no smoke without fire” analogy plays out here. One case maybe, but 4 cases, people are starting to question. His ex Johnson also claims that he was violent, punching her in the chest and ribs, which caused her to be hospitalised. This saga is looking pretty bleak for Noth whose character ‘Big’ has just been killed off by HBO bosses after suffering a heart attack on a Pelaton bike (coincidence, maybe?!) If only Noth’s demise was as quick and painless.

NEWS IL DIVO STAR DIES FROM COVID Carlos Marin, the Spanish baritone in Il Divo, has died in hospital from Covid aged 53. According to reports, Marin was taken to Manchester Royal Hospital on December 7th and placed in a medically induced coma and intubated. It is with “deep regret” that his family announced his passing on December 21st. His ex-wife Geraldine Larossa, better known by her stage name Innocence, has said there is a “huge hole in her heart”. Marin was a much-loved member of the concerto

band and a huge star both in the US and UK since the band was formed by Simon Cowell back in 2003. Marin first contracted Covid in 2019 during the

band’s European tour. Although he made a recovery, he was plagued with illness his family revealed. Marin had reportedly had the Johnson & Johnson vaccine in the States before he was admitted to hospital.

RAISING A FEW EYEBROWS ‘Love Island’ star Megan Barton-Hanson has been in floods of tears after an eyebrow tinting procedure went horribly wrong, leaving her with thick black brows that look like they have been drawn on with a Sharpie felt tip pen. The 27-year-old reality TV star was said to be sobbing for hours after the beauty blunder, w h i c h actually happened two years ago, even though she is only sharing her brow horror story now. The distressed Tik Tok video of Megan has gone viral and fans are really giving it to her, despite her honest approach to telling the story. Timing wise it couldn’t have been better for Megan to release the video as her 2-month romance with ‘TOWIE’ star James Lock has come to an end. Lock has been out partying with his single friends and Megan is said to be heartbroken.

He was laid to rest in his native Spain in his trademark black Armani suit he wore when he performed around the world. His family explained that “he can now sing in Heaven to the angels.”

SPICE UP YOUR LIFE Mel C has indicated that all 5 of the Spice Girls are up for the reunion that has been heavily mooted in the press of late. The 47-year-old singer is sure that a comeback tour is going to happen next year as the girls are apparently “always talking about performing together again.” Previously Victoria Beckham had refused to reunite with the iconic band; while Mel B, Mel C, Emma Bunton and Geri Halliwell reformed for a sell-out tour in 2019. “It’s something all we passionately want to do,” Mel C revealed. RECIPE HONEY MUSTARD GRILLED SALMON WITH PUY LENTILS A light and vibrant healthy fish dish from the BBC Good Food Guide with earthy beetroot and lentils, served with basil, rocket and sweet grilled salmon. This recipe is perfect for those who are looking for calorie control in January as only 560 cals per portion. Prep time: 15 minutes Cooking time: 10 minutes

INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • • • • •

(Serves 2) Zest and juice of 1 lemon 2 tsp wholegrain mustard 1 tbsp clear honey 2 skinless salmon fillets 2 tsp rapeseed oil 5 sliced spring onions 175g cooked beetroot (not in vinegar), diced 250g pack ready-to-eat puy lentils 10 basil leaves 2 big handfuls of rocket salad

METHOD

1. Turn the grill to high and line a baking tray with foil. 2. Mix the lemon zest and juice, mustard and honey in a bowl. 3. Put the salmon on the tray, brush with a little of the dressing, then grill for 5-7 mins – there is no need to turn the salmon over until it flakes easily when tested with a knife.

4. Meanwhile, heat the oil in a wok and cook the spring onions and beetroot. 5. Tip in the lentils with 4 tbsp water, cover the pan and cook for 2 minutes to heat through. 6. Tip into a bowl and toss with the remaining dressing, the basil and rocket. 7. Serve with the salmon and garnish.

WINE MATCH Salmon is in many ways the chicken of the fish world - an ingredient you can serve in many different ways and therefore match with a number of different wines. That said it is one of the richest fish, therefore a natural candidate to pair would be a medium-to-full-bodied white wine such as a Chardonnay, a classic like crisp New Zealand Oyster Bay works incredibly well here. Serve ice cold. But because salmon is a meaty fish if you grill or char, like in this recipe, you can actually pair it with a dry red. Pinot Noir is a great match but a Gamay works very well too. If you prefer white – you could try a dry, semisweet white like Pinot Gris if Chardonnay is not your cup of tea.

BOOK REVIEW

MORBIUS

THE LUMINEERS BRIGHTSIDE

THE MAID

Sony Pictures have really gone to town on the fear factor with this blood curdling, soon-to-be franchise featuring the Marvel Comics famous anti-hero Morbius. The story centres around biochemist Michael Morbius (played by ‘Suicide Squad’ actor Jared Leto) who tries to cure himself of a rare blood disease. When the experiment goes wrong he inadvertently infects himself with a form of vampirism. Further trouble ensues when circumstances lead to Martine, his fiancée, being transformed into a vampire too at his hand. The blockbuster film also stars ‘Good Omens’ Adria Arjona as his fiancée Martine, former ‘Doctor Who’ actor Matt Smith as his buddy Loxias Crown and ‘Fast and Furious’ star Tyrese Gibson as FBI agent Simon Stroud. There is also a standout performance from Oscar winner Michael Keaton as Vulture, who was last seen in ‘Spiderman: Homecoming’ getting fans excited for the prospect of future Spidey crossovers. Filmed in a dark and melancholy style, Morbius is scripted by ‘Dracula Untold’s’ Burk Sharpless ‘The Last Witch Hunter’s’ Matt Sazama. Swedish director Daniel Espinosa (‘Life’ and ‘Child 44’) takes up the helm to direct this trailblazing fantasy superhero flick, scheduled for release on January 28th.

Denver-based, folk rock band, The Lumineers, are releasing their fourth studio album on January 14th. Having dropped the title track ‘Brightside’ last September and two other singles ‘Big Shot’ and ‘Radio AM’ back in October and November respectively; fans have already been able to get a taster of their new material and it doesn’t disappoint. As usual with The Lumineers, their lyrics are well thought out and the melodies catchy. Whereas their last album ‘III’ focused on addiction ‘Brightside’ is much more positive and upbeat. Interestingly they are taking more of a rock than a country vibe too with their latest offering. Kendall Jenner T

he Kardashians are Marmite. You either love them or hate them. The haters (of which there are plenty!) main criticism is that they are talentless opportunists that have achieved global fame and notoriety for doing nothing. Fair point. However there has always been one of the Kardashian/Jenner clan members that has stood out in our eyes. Our willowy, glamorous cover star Kendall. Unlike the others she has forged a successful career on her own merit. According to Forbes, at 25, she is the highest earning female supermodel. She has collaborated with top fashion and beauty brands including Marc Jacobs, Chanel, Estee Lauder and Victoria´s Secret. It´s with no shame Kendall admits to using the reality show as a platform to launch her modelling career - which has sparked a difference from her famous sisters Kim, Khloe, Kourtney and Kylie who have all launched clothing lines but have never stepped foot on the catwalk itself.

32 SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 05

Kendall has made a big jump into the modelling industry thanks to her striking good looks and killer figure and compared to her siblings, she is considered a positive role model to all her young fans. A little bit more chic, sexy and classy than the likes of Kim and Khloe – who regularly get public beratings for over-the-top antics and barely there dresses!

KEEPING UP

Kendall first appeared on the reality show ‘Keeping Up With The Kardashians’ in 2007. Her childhood from the age of 12 has been televised to the world and fans have watched her blossom from a sometimes sulky teen into the beautiful woman she is today. Kendall, unlike her sisters, has always been a quieter sole and less of a reality star diva. She is a career driven go-getter which is what sets her apart from the rest. The show highlights her close relationship with her baby sister Kylie, her 8 half siblings including the 3 Kardashian sisters and her parents Kris and newly gender transitioned dad Caitlyn Jenner, try that for a crazy family! With the show ending last year after its 20th Season, Kendall’s career shows no signs of slowing.

DESTINED FOR THE CATWALK

Kendall began modelling at the early age of 14 after being signed up by Wilhelmina Models who scouted her potential. Her first modelling job was in 2009 for the fashion chain Forever 21 and in 2011 she walked for Sherri Hill during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week after which her career soared from strength to strength. The end of 2012 saw Kendall on the covers of various teen targeted magazines including GenLux and by the end of the year she teamed up with world famous Victoria’s Secret photographer Russell James. The partnership between the two hit Harper’s Bazaar and the model featured her writing in ‘James Nomad Two Worlds: Australia’, the quality of her editorial work saw the transition

from commercial to high fashion which led to her signing with The Society Management in 2014. Jenner has also walked for prestigious fashion weeks in New York for Marc Jacobs and Paris for Givenchy and Chanel. Her acceptance by high fashion labels proved to models and designers that she was cut out for the best modelling jobs in the world; Kendall is tall, dark haired and beautiful and the catwalk has indeed become her life. She has also walked on catwalks for Donna Karan, Tommy Hilfiger and Fendi just to name a few. She has been on the covers of GQ, Elle and Vogue and was the face of the Balmain campaign alongside model and best friends Gigi and Bella Hadid (all this before hitting 20 we have to add). Kendall is indeed living her dream; she was interviewed at 13-years-old stating she would love to be a Victoria’s Secret Angel a dream that she kicked off her bucket list in 2015.

POPULARITY

The model has a large and strong following, with 204 million Instagram followers. She has been placed as the No.1 most followed model on Facebook, Instagram and the 2nd most followed model on Twitter not far behind modelling tycoon Tyra Banks. Kendall, like many other normal girls her age, uses her social media platforms to share photos of herself, family and friends but she uses them to plug her many endorsements and commercial projects. The unique factor is that she uses her social media to influence her fashion credibility in a way that speaks to millions. Kendall has used the Kardashian affiliation that first shot her into the limelight and made a lasting name for herself but she always had the gift since an early age. “I would literally sit at home and have my friends take pictures of me on my little Canon camera that my mum gave me for Christmas, obviously the show was being in front of a camera, it’s just something I have always been around.” Kendall stated about her busy lifestyle balancing the show and modelling: “It’s definitely two different worlds. I feel like Hannah Montana, but it is fun.”

ENDORSEMENTS

Ms Jenner has featured alongside her sister in their ‘Kendall + Kylie’ collaboration with Topshop which was a global success. The biggest highlight of her career came in the form of being the brand face for the world´s largest cosmetic company, Estee Lauder, netting her a cool $4m. She has also fronted ads for Modern Muse le Rouge, Shimmer Body Lotion and Pure Colour collection and the company created a limited-edition Kendall Jenner shade brand of Pure Colour Envy Matte Sculpting Lipstick in 2015. Kendall also has her own official website with lifestyle blogs and paid subscription mobile app extensions. Plus, the Jenner sisters paired with Glu Mobile and developed a spin off from their half-sister’s mobile app ‘Kim Kardashian: Hollywood’ called ‘Kendall and Kylie.’ Despite modelling still being her full-time job, she knows it’s not a forever career and has been involved in the launch of several new companies. The first Moon is an oral health care brand that offer teeth whitening pens and she has also has her own brand of Tequila called 818.

RELATIONSHIPS

It goes without saying that Kendall has attracted a lot of male attention from the who´s who of A-List hotties. She famously dated One Direction´s Harry Styles for a year and has rumoured to have hooked up with Nick Jonas, Lewis Hamilton and the Biebs! She is currently dating NBA Basketball Player Devin Booker, who is also 25. The couple have been together for just over a year having first met in June 2020 and going public on Valentine’s day. Unlike her sisters the model is quiet about her love life and she has never flaunted a relationship before but these two seem very much in love. Her mum Kris is seriously hoping that Kendall, who is the last of her family to settle down and have kids, has met her match here. Kendall is an Auntie to 18 nieces and nephews and has recently expressed a desire to have kids. Let’s hope this love story has a happy ending.

7 MOST FAMOUS HISTORIC HG WELLS - WOKING

H

G Wells is considered to be one of the world’s greatest science fiction writers and intellectuals of our time. His move to Woking in 1895 inspired some of his greatest works, including ‘The War of the Worlds’ which made it to the silver screen in 2005, starring Tom Cruise and Dakota Fanning. Wells made Woking infamous in the late 19th Century by making Horsell Common the location for his Martian invasion in the novel. The original idea for ‘The War of the Worlds’ came during one of his walks in Woking when his brother Frank speculated about what would happen if aliens suddenly descended and started attacking people. Wells lived on the pebble-dashed Maybury Road, in a semi-detached house that faced the main railway to London. It’s built up now but at the time it was isolated. He married Catherine Robbins and moved there for 2 years to escape the smog of London and wrote other classics including ‘The Invisible Man’ whilst being a Surrey resident. There is a memorial statue of Wells and the Martian in the centre of Woking in homage to him and his work. Professor Simon James from Durham University sums up Wells nicely in his quote: “Wells was a visionary – he wrote about the atom bomb, tank, airplane and the internet long before they were invented – and he was also a really powerful writer, one of our finest novelists.”

CAL SURREY CELEBRITIES ENID BLYTON - CHESSINGTON

‘J

ungle Book’ and ‘Famous Five’ author Enid Blyton lived in Hook Road, Chessington from 1920 to 1924. She is one of the most popular authors in history and achieved incredulous notability despite being a woman in the ever-apparent man’s world of publishing in her era. There is a blue plaque on her house in Hook Road (placed in 1997, 29 years after her death), despite recent protests to have it removed. Blyton has recently come under fire for her work that has been criticised for being “racist” and “xenophobic.” Due to the criticism, there has been an updated version to her online book, ‘The Little Black Doll’, that now states Sambo “is accepted by his owner now his black face is washed clean by rain” (extracting the word “ugly” before black face). Oh dear! A recent poll in The Guardian stated that 48% of readers agreed Blyton was not racist – just a product of her time. A celebrity fan of Blyton’s comedian David Baddiel backed up her legacy by saying it’s unfair to give her “a lack of literacy merit” despite the backlash she’s endured as she has sold 600 million books and “should be awarded merit for this alone.” Whatever your thoughts on this matter you cannot take away from the fact this Surrey girl broke through barriers imposed on women in her era and wrote some of the most nostalgic literature around today.

SIR CHRISTOPHER WREN - EAST MOLESEY

A

rchitect Christopher Wren is a true Surrey legend. Even the greatest scientist known to man, Sir Isaac Newton, referred to Wren as “a genius”. He masterminded the huge St Paul’s Cathedral rebuild, arguably one of London’s most stunning and iconic landmarks, after the Great Fire of London in 1666. After this was rebuilt, he took on the huge project of designing and rebuilding another 58 churches ravaged by the fires. Then there was a small throw in job for Henry VIII (!) by designing Hampton Court Palace, his main home, which according to architects is the most impressively designed listed building in the world and one of the finest palaces ever built. As a gift for his services to the sovereign he was awarded his Garde II listed mansion in Hampton Court, which recently sold for a cool £4.5m. Sir Christopher Wren lived in this 6-bedroom building, 4-reception room, 3-bathroom mansion by the River Thames until he died at the age of 90. His children inherited the property and generations lived here before it was sold to MP Toby Jessel.

VIRGINIA WOOLF – RICHMOND

F

eminist activist Virginia Woolf was born in London, Kensington in 1882 and later resided in Richmond at 17 Hogarth House in 1915 until her death at the age of 59. She is considered one of the most important modernist 20th Century authors and a pioneer of consciousness. She suffered from bipolar, yet managed to forge a career in journalism and literature writing the best-selling books ‘Mrs Dalloway’ and ‘To The Lighthouse’ until her untimely death, considered to be suicide. The two Hogarth House dwellings are now on the market for £3.75 million with property agent Savills. Both Richmond properties are set over four floors, with the kitchen, dining room and family room filling the lower ground floor, and the drawing room and study on the ground level. Each has a private courtyard garden designed by RHS Chelsea Flower Show medalist Heather Appleton. Woolf bought the house with her then husband Leonard Woolf and formed the publishing group, Hogarth House here.

MARIE STOPES – DORKING

M

arie Stopes is most well known for being an advocate of birth control and sexual education. She founded her first clinic in London in 1921 which was open to all married women and there she developed many different types of contraceptive women could use. She moved to the Norbury Park House estate near Dorking in 1838 until her death of breast cancer, aged 77, in 1858. A keen writer and poet (and also notably the first female academic at the University of Manchester), Stopes left the estate to the Royal Society of Literature as she chose never to have children. (Seems quite fitting really – her contraception worked!) In November 2020, the abortion and contraceptive provider, which operates in 37 countries around the world, abbreviated it’s name to MSI Reproductive Choices. It’s slogan for many centres is: “We empower women to have children by choice, not chance.” Marie Stopes is still considered one of the most powerful brand names as every high street shop bears the name.

LORD BEAVERBROOK – LEATHERHEAD

kingmaker, powerbroker (and sometime mischief maker), Lord Beaverbrook was a consummate politician, publicist of boundless energy, and a great friend of Winston Churchill. His newspapers, the Daily Express and Sunday Express, could make or break almost anyone, and he hosted the great and the good at Beaverbrook during his time there. Take a look at the estate’s visitor’s book and you’ll see for yourself. The ethos of Lord Beaverbrook, is epitomised in the Beaverbrook’s iconic Spitfire emblem. As wartime Minister of Aircraft Production, Beaverbrook famously trebled the production of Spitfires, enabling Britain to snatch victory from the jaws of certain defeat in the pivotal Battle of Britain. He masterminded a secret runway for planes to fly out of his secret Leatherhead estate/military base along the famous Young Street road. It was this thinking that enabled there to be no bombing of the sizeable part of Britain’s RAF during World War II. Lord Beaverbrook lived at the estate from 1910 when he purchased it after a single inspection for £30,000 until his death in 1964 leaving it to his wife. It is now owned by Longshot Cherkley Court who transformed it into the Beaverbrook Hotel & Estate that it is today.

NEW YEAR NEW YOU With the New Year we all start with plans to conquer new goals and create grand resolutions for the coming twelve months. More than often the year flies by and we haven’t checked these goals off and they roll over to the following year with only a few modifications. It is important to have ambitions and a desire to want to become healthier, a better person, happier - but realistic changes that match your ability to commit are most important. There’s no point making grand plans if you’re not going to stick to them.

AT HOME

A

different approach to creating a long list of objectives over the next year is simply to look at your current circumstances and to see how to spark more joy in your life. This idea comes from a Japanese theory by Marie Kondo on creating space and decluttering your environment - primarily referring to your living space. Once we have learnt how to declutter our living areas it can be wider applied to our general life principals.   “Life truly only begins once we have our home in order”. When we look around our home often we have hoarded years and years of collectibles that we just stuff and store somewhere that we more than likely won’t even look at or touch over the next year. This includes our wardrobe, books, photographs, stored boxes in the garage. It can be a daunting task that seems impossible to tackle especially as we all have an emotional attachment to many of our belongings, but once your life is more organised and you have created space it flows onto making your life easier. It is suggested that the decluttering process works through stages and starts with your wardrobe as this has the least emotional attachment when culling. All your clothes need to be pulled out and while deciding on what to keep you ask the question of whether each item sparks joy? If you haven’t worn it in the past twelve months you are probably unlikely to wear it for the next twelve months. It can also create potential for someone else to make use and find happiness from what you are no longer benefiting from.   Once you have mastered the decluttering process and worked your way through your home from kitchen, bathroom to office, (including all your drawers) creating an environment where the things you cherish and use are accessible and also visible your life becomes more simple and organised. It is important to respect the belongings you have and when hidden, bundled or boxed they are not creating any joy in your life. Tidying doesn’t mean getting rid of everything, just keeping what makes you happy.

FRIENDSHIPS

T

his is an important concept which could be applied throughout life. We can ask the same question of our personal circumstances and make positive changes in our employment, interpersonal relationships with partners and friends. Determining the people in our life that create happiness and make us feel better can have huge positive impacts on our well-being.   If we all think of our circle of friends and extended circle - we can think of people that make our mood positive and in contrast there are different people that drain us. So focusing your energy on people that make you feel good about yourself instead of people that bring your mood down is an important way to spark more joy in your life. We all have times of need and trouble but there must be a balance and friendships should seek a balance working for both

people. Before just cutting people from your life you could talk to them at an appropriate time about the relationship you have and how to make it better. There are many ways that can make a friendship feel draining, someone that makes an appointment to see you and always cancels last minute is not respecting your time, someone that never shares their portion of the bill over dinner, someone that only calls you when they have problems but never asks how you are or forgets to call when things are going well for them.  In some cases it really can be a situation where your friend is not aware of their behaviour and the effects it has on you. But we all have our limits and you can’t carry on in an unhealthy friendship. Let your friend know or let them slip away quietly.

he same can be said for our love life. Do we feel we are being taken for granted, is the playing field honest and respectful? Whatever your situation, whether being in a marriage, living with your partner, dating, casual meetings - you need to feel good in yourself and the other person should enhance your happiness level. We often become complacent in our relationships but seeking a level “higher than satisfactory” is important for our personal wellbeing. We have a choice with our partnerships and respect and honesty, taking care of each other makes these partnerships special. If we are not feeling cared for or appreciated - then changes are necessary. You should feel a spark of joy when spending time with your partner so try to find new ways to create happiness and fun in your partnership. This is the hardest decision to make if things are not going your way. There are so many good relationship and marriage counsellors out there so try your hardest to make time for each other, sometimes reigniting that initial spark is all it takes. ose Filler or non-surgical liquid rhinoplasty is the new trend for nose jobs. It is an excellent alternative to traditional surgical rhinoplasty. The treatment works by placing dermal filler on strategic areas to lift and sculpt the nose. Although this treatment does not make the nose “smaller” it carefully contours and shapes the nose to look less bumpy, straighter and more delicate. The benefits of this treatment are plentiful: It takes approximately 15 minutes to achieve amazing results, there is no downtime or recovery time, you get instant results plus no general aesthetic and no broken bones. Cobham and Wimbledon based beauty salon, Face and Fillers, are doing a January promotion for anyone who is happy to have their before and after nose photos put on social media. BOTOX & FILLER

T

hese procedures seem to be anti-ageing rituals for most women these days. Always make sure you visit a regulated aesthetician, there are so many rogue traders out there. Surrey Rocks recommends Icon Style Beauty, Face & Fillers, Lisa Harris and The Soni Clinic if you are looking for the best local establishments. Proven track records, qualifications and 5 Star Reviews... you will thank us later. Steer clear of cheap as chips ‘Botox’ and ‘Filler’ merchants as you pay for what you get and there’s a lot that can go wrong if you are not in the right hands. With Botox it’s always best to go “less is more” if you are trying for the first time. Look out for ‘Baby Botox’ which you can test to see if it’s the right procedure for you without going and fully freezing your face and regretting it later. With lip fillers always opt for 0.5ml not a full 1ml as there’s nothing worse than a ‘Lesley Ash’ trout pout. If 0.5ml is not enough first time round extend to a 1ml next time – but try it out and build it up gradually, you don’t want to look like a blownup version of you with scary consequences. “You only better” is the result you want to achieve with any cosmetic procedure. Yasmin at Face & Fillers, Marina at Icon Style Beauty, Lisa Harris at Skin Science and Dr. Ash Soni at Soni Clinic all know this and will look after you guaranteed. Botox and Fillers are not fads - they are preventative medicine for your face ageing. As Yasmin said to us, “Growing old is a fact of life but looking old no longer is.” Be sure to be over 20 before you start these procedures – any younger is a waste of time and money as collagen does not depreciate till then. And as of 20 you only lose 1% collagen growth per year so the ageing process that starts then, starts slowly.

DON’T SUGARCOAT IT

T

ry and cut out sugar from your diet. It’s harmful in so many ways. Take a look at sugar-free advocate Carolyn Hartz. For the past 28 years Carol has shunned sugar in her pursuit of the perfect face and body and has been making headlines in the process. Fed up of the highs and lows associated with sugar and a diabetes scare in her forties, she gave up the drug (yes, drug) almost 30 years ago and has never looked back. Carolyn boasts a bikini body and glowing complexion that many women decades younger could only dream of. The Perth-based mother-of-three, said of her transformation: “A lot of women post 50 think that it’s not possible to maintain a reasonable shape and weight when they reach 50 or beyond. I even speak to women who are in their 40s and who have had children and think they cannot regain their post baby body. We know our metabolism slows down as we get older it just means we have to take control and make healthier choices and work a little harder,” she said. “I believe it is very important to be aware of the type of food you eat and the quantity of food you eat. Being mindful while you are eating is a huge factor. Mindless eating can lead to unnecessary weight gain. I say to my customers “taste and enjoy every mouthful”... it will help you slow down and you will be less likely to overeat.” And when it comes to food, sugar is most certainly out, with Hartz opting for an alternative called Xylitol. If you can opt for sugar free completely it will work wonders, otherwise aim to cut down on the white stuff.

DESTRESS

A

ll the cells in our body contain tiny clocks called Telomeres that determine how long each cell lives. Telomeres are little caps at the end of chromosomes that prevent loss or injury to genetic information during cell division. However, each time a cell divides, part of the Telomere is lost and it becomes shorter, eventually disappearing because of the divisions and damage that prevents each cell from reproducing itself. Hence the ageing process. Anyway what’s with all this science babble? Well before you throw this mag down - here it is… the chief enemy of Telomeres has been discovered by scientists to be none other than Stress. Therefore the breaking down of cells and premature ageing is primarily to do with leading a stressful life. Did you know Barrack Obama went grey after just a few months in the Oval Office? In which case, this theory is proven in spades. This outward sign of Barrack’s “grey-ageing” (pronounced grayging) was caused by the damage to his Telomeres. Think of this in simplistic terms as the outgoing president elects cells going rusty. So, what can we actually do to combat stress and thus delay the onset of wrinkles? Besides not becoming President of the United States. Well here you go…

YOGA

R

esearch has found that participants in a 3-month yoga programme had increased levels of Telomerase in the bloodstream. Why? Because yoga fundamentally allows you to control your thoughts, not letting them spiral out of control. It’s known that yoga can help manage anxiety and depression. And if you feel more in control of your life and state of mind, you will simply be less stressed. Other benefits of yoga include improved muscular strength, improved flexibility and improved sleep quality. That yoga retreat holiday your friend has been barking on about seems somewhat more appealing now?

EXERCISE RIGHT

I

f you look at a person pounding the treadmill next to you - their face contorted, looking like they’re doing 12 rounds with Mike Tyson rather than a leisurely jog? Well this news will give you even more of a reason to gloat. This painstaking process is actually more counter-productive than the good work they think they are doing as if you don’t enjoy a workout, you will release stress hormones. Exercise should leave you feeling elated so be sure to choose an activity you really enjoy to shed pounds and destress you - be it swimming or a team sport.

POSITIVE THINKING

R

esearch shows that pessimists have shorter Telomeres than optimists. Of course, too much optimism can make us deluded, but we all tend to expect the worst much more frequently than we assume everything will be OK. Think positive as opposed to negative (minus delusion) and you will be taking a leaf out of Carolyn Hartz book in no time. Other benefits proven to thinking positive include; a longer life span, better physical health, lower blood pressure, better stress management and more creative thinking. According to Web MD you will also have greater problem solving skills, clearer thinking, better moods and less depression. Sounds good to us.

54 SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 05

EAT HEALTHILY

G

ood news… repeated studies have shown Omega 3s, found in oily fish, encourage our Telomeres to grow. Added to this almonds, cherry and other berry juices all act as antioxidants in the fight against cell division. Plus in a recent study, participants who took multivitamins had longer Telomeres than those who didn’t. Steer clear of red meat, starchy white carbohydrates like bread, pasta and rice and try to up your fish and vegetable intake. The best anti-oxidant superfoods are strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, kale, broccoli, artichokes, pecans and beans.

GO NUTS

P

istachios also protect our DNA by lowering blood pressure in the fight against Telomeres destruction. The right food choices can help combat the ageing process so take full advantage of this simple anti-ageing rule. Walnuts and almonds are the best source of concentrated Omega 3 so if you are thinking of snacking get a pack of nuts to hand, its health benefits are plentiful as they contain Vitamin E to repair skin damage and boost collagen.

SLEEP MORE & OTHER BEDROOM ACTIVITY

S

imple, but effective. Get eight hours sleep or more and you can be winging your way to looking wow, not ow. Oh, and have more sex…it’s good for the cells in the brain, apparently. Regular sex helps people look youthful for longer, experts claim. Dr David Weeks’ research shows that older men and women with an active love life look between five and seven years younger than their actual age. Other British research has credited regular lovemaking with halving the odds of early death. Dr Weeks, former head of old age psychology at the Royal Edinburgh Hospital, said that people of all ages should be aware of the benefits of a healthy love life. Those who looked younger than their age claimed to have sex an average 50% more – in the 40-to-50 age group equating to three times a week rather than twice. Dr Weeks says that the pleasure derived from sex is a ‘crucial factor’ in preserving youth. Biology also plays a role, with sex releasing endorphins, the body’s natural feel-good chemicals. You have been told!

IN SUMMARY Making small changes to find more positivity and happiness in your life can have huge long-term benefits. Your home should be a place you look forward returning to, the belongings you have should be easily accessible and visible. The people you surround yourself with should be supportive, caring and uplift your mood. Your partnership should make you feel valued and create a sense of contentment. Commitment and determination to focusing on creating an environment that makes you happy will give you a higher level of satisfaction and well-being. Simple changes in your mindset and looking for ways to enhance the joy in your life will create higher levels of satisfaction and enjoyment.

HIFU NON SURGICAL FACELIFT W

ith so many different beauty and anti-ageing treatments on the market these days how can you be sure you are getting ‘bang for your buck?’

Well luckily readers, we have tried and tested and can definitely confirm HIFU is one of these. We looked ‘banging’ on leaving Icon Style Beauty (even if we may say so ourselves!) after just one lunch-hour treatment.

SO WHAT IS HIFU? HIFU is a non-surgical facelift that uses “High Intensity Focused Ultrasound” energy to target the deep structural layers of the skin. The technology works by targeting heat at specific depths to kick start the body's healing response, naturally increasing the levels of collagen in the tissue, that diminish as we age. The result is plumper, firmer looking skin. Who wouldn’t want that? At Surrey Rocks we recommend only going to the best beauty and aesthetic providers and we can definitely say Icon Style Beauty in Cobham is one of those. The before consultation we had with Marina, addressed any issues we had with our skin and the realistic results that we wanted to achieve. HIFU was recommended because our tester was in her early 40’s and wanted to smooth out any fine

BEAUTY FEATURE lines and wrinkles and help with sagging brows and tightening the jowel area - to avoid any invasive surgery in the future. As we all know, facelifts are expensive and invasive and if they can be avoided with laser and plumping technologies like HIFU then it is a ‘win win’ for both your wallet and your face! The sensation of having HIFU is not painful either. Our reviewer described as a “hot, zinging feeling” as the laser is transferred around the face and under the chin essentially zapping and kickstarting collagen growth with it’s heat. The whole procedure was done in 45 minutes, literally during a lunch hour, and no redness or after effects were noticeable. In fact, our reviewer was able to go onto another meeting after the treatment at 2pm - where her glowing skin was commented on! After 3 weeks the full effects of the treatment were visable and it was obvious the skin was firmed and lines were drastically reduced. Another plus point with HIFU is the treatment only needs doing once every 6 months and is a snip at only £300 per treatment at Icon Style Beauty - so more cost effective than fillers and botox. It’s a good treatment for men too as it’s a natural look without any freezing or injectables it is hard for people to guess you have been to a medical/aesthetic practitioner to shave off those unwanted years on the clock!

If you think this could be the treatment for you then get in touch with Icon Style Beauty to book a consultation today.

BOLLOX TO DETOX!! “N

Emma GoodmanHorne Emma has been a Fitness Coach for over 8 years running Bootcamps in Pyrford, Surrey. In June 2019 she created an Online fitness and food platform, emergyLIFE. In April 2021 She was awarded “National Fitness Trainer of the Year” @WEAREFITANDWELL. Her passion, drive is making fitness accessible to ALL abilities from beginners to gym bunnies and for all ages. Her clients range from 16yrs – 74yrs old and it’s all about making it fun, engaging and every workout is different to keep the body and brain motivated. Her focus on ‘Keeping it Real’ and understanding that everyone has struggles and stresses is refreshing. “It’s easy to get caught up in a world of body perfection, which doesn’t exist. Everyone should have the chance to enjoy exercise to help them both mentally and physically, they just need to find what works for them, gives them a boost and realise that “exercise should be a joy not a chore!”

ew Year New You” is what we all say…“I’m going to exercise more, eat better and lose all that excess flab that’s arrived out of nowhere? I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you know what? - You CAN do it, but not just in Jan, you need to knuckle down and commit for LIFE! Of course, we all give it a good Kick start, we’re in the gym, walking, running, smashing our workouts, drinking more water and might even attempt a bloody awful detox which turns us into witches (more than normal) for a few days as we’re hangry and unbearable, yet apparently its going to cleanse us?!?!? WTF!!! If you are serious about the whole Fitter, Healthier, Happier me then here’s the key tips to make sure it is a Habit, not a Hunch. Create a REALISTIC workout routine WHEN can you DO a 30-45 min workout 4-5 times a week?  Yep, it needs to be that often to see and feel a significant difference.  PLAN it into your diary, as you would a meeting, food shop, catch up with a buddy etc.

@jodidaviesphotography

FITNESS

WHAT do you enjoy doing?  Weights, Run, Powerwalking, Classes etc MIX up your workouts. Not only to get better all-round results in Strength, Fitness & Flexibility. If you do the same thing, you will get bored quickly, start to dread it and find every excuse to cancel.  If you start to enjoy your workout time, you are MUCH more likely to stick with it. COMMIT yourself to at least 3mths!!  Rome wasn’t built in a day, consistency is key, it takes at least 7 weeks to create a GOOD habit, for LIFE! You CAN’T outrun a FORK  It’s awesome if you are working out to get fitter, stronger etc but if you want to shed that excess baggage you need to look at what you are eating too. Unfortunately, your body

shape is 80% food and 20% exercise. Don’t DIET...The first three letters spell DIE!! YES, you need to watch what you eat, but you are all smart enough to know what GOOD is and what you need to refrain from over-indulging in! Jump off the Yo-Yo diet and start to create better food habits, for LIFE. Drink more Water  A hydrated body will flush out the crap, keep your metabolism up, your brain clear and your body working efficiently. There’s a shed

SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 05

FITNESS load of other benefits including bone density, bloods, heart etc. Aim for 2-3 litres of water a day. The excess peeing will stop in a few days, get through that and you have nailed it! Eat the Rainbow  The more colour you have on your plate, the more likely you are getting some goodness into your body, and I’m not talking about eating a bag of skittles! Ditch the Crap  Treat a TREAT as a TREAT not a daily substance! You can still enjoy those indulges, just not every day. I’m talking crisps, cake, chocolate, pastries, sweets and ice-cream, you know all the sweet sticky stuff that tastes great for a second, then leaves you feeling sluggish and low afterwards! White is so Last Year!  A simple switch to wholegrain or brown carbs, will give you more fibre, be less starchy, easier to digest and keep you fuller for longer. Protein is Power  I’m not talking full on keto, unless that’s your thing?

Protein is the main building block for muscles and energy, the more protein on your plate, less carbs and more rainbow is an easy way to give your body the best fuel. Intermittent Fasting  I’m a HUGE fan and have been for over 5 years now and its part of my daily life. 12-14 hours of fasting (I do it overnight, its easier) means your body has the time to digest, flush out, do its natural thing, burn off, use, store, flush and build what it should! Portion Caution  How much is on your plate? WTF!!! Use your hand as a guide.  PALM of protein, FIST of carbs, Thumb of fat, Two fingers of dairy  The rest should be the rainbow and lots of raw dark leafy greens, spinach, rocket etc is the way forward! It’s not Rocket Science and none of this is New News! You need to be realistic, committed and prepared to dig deep to make a difference. You have one BODY, one LIFE and a lot of chances to create the best version of YOU. Once you get through the hard yard, you WILL discover a new love for yourself and I really hope this Year is, your YEAR. Say, ‘Bollox to Detox’ and think more about creating better habits that are sustainable for LIFE.

ife has a constant ability to remind us who’s boss but it also offers us beauty - should we be fortunate enough to see it. John Cage once said, “the thing with accidents are you get to choose which one’s you keep!” and this for sure holds a fair truth within the way in which my work unfolds. I work in a very fluid manner which is highly reactionary... in constant a state of flux if you will.... is as though my mind soul are instructing and just the catalyst for steering the direction it wishes to proceed. Sometimes this works, sometimes not but I’ll keep overlaying and only feel OK to stop when nothing more is bothering me...this can take some time but it’s all worth it.

INSPIRED We all have people we draw inspiration from. For me the list could be long... the genius that is Piccasso. The brilliance of Gerhard Richter. The anger of De

HOME & INTERIORS Kooning. The invention of Yayoi Kusama. The legend that is Da Vinci. The list could go on... but all those who have crossed my path in some way fuelled my childish inquisitiveness. As I’ve never been the type who wants to know what his coffee is going to taste like before he wakes I produce a varied array of works some light hearted and some drawn from deep inside which can also be a kind of self therapy. If a piece makes you think then good but if it makes you feel then we’re really getting somewhere... perhaps this is why faces have a strong representation within my portfolio. All faces have the same components and yet no two are the same. They are also the focal point for emotional release. The structure, shape and form has always had a fascination for me. I believe art is of massive importance in our ever increasing stressful lives with its relentless pressures. I think it can offer us (however brief) an opportunity to take a break from the modern day madnesses constantly straining at us.

Choose to eat in the main restaurant with its exquisite décor or dine al fresco under the stars on the outdoor terrace. There’s also a grand bar area for pre-dinner drinks.

Inspired by the original Manhattan Bar that TGI had on 63rd and 1st, the US conglomerate has diversified launching a new, more upmarket enterprise. Interestingly, the only two 63RD & 1sts are in NYC and Cobham, Surrey. As much as our reviewers wanted to dislike the start of the new chain; the service, food, décor and cocktails requests we tested them on – were on point. A brave, bold move but this restaurant excelled on every level.

The Hive at The Packhouse serves Mozzo Coffee, Birchalls Teas, Nordic Wellness drinks and much more. For those looking for snacks or a light lunch; pastries, cookies, cakes, toasted sandwiches and other delights are available from 9.30am to 5pm Monday to Friday and 10am to 4pm on weekends. They also offer the best ice-cream from top local supplier, Meadow Cottage Farm, and have fantastic outdoor pods with WiFi for an exclusive gastronomy experience.

RESTAURANT REVIEW

THE WATERMILL F

ollowing a huge transformation - inside and out - the newly renovated Watermill opened on November 30th with an upmarket, gastro pub feel to critical acclaim. The interior makeover consisted of relocating and vastly expanding the corner bar intro the centre of the premises, an open fire, luxurious bar and living room-style seating plus at the back a plush restaurant with grand chandeliers, booths and seating areas with a vast 310 capacity; including its 3 x exterior dining areas. The outside of The Watermill, in case you haven’t noticed, is a bright, eye-catching pink which really makes this restaurant stand out. Taking over the huge listed premises on Reigate Road was a big move. Not only is the building huge but it has the capability to be a boutique hotel with upstairs guest bedrooms that are ready to be transformed for Spring 2022, our insiders tell us. The premises are famous for being the old Lido back in the 1960’s and have the most stunning views over Box Hill. The Watermill has stayed true to their heritage by choosing a pink painted building (as was the Lido back in the sixties) and a huge picture adorns the wall on the upper-level showcasing this.

OUR EXPERIENCE We arrived for a Friday lunch and the restaurant was packed. There was a great fun, Friday vibe with a mixture of ladies lunching, guys who came straight off the golf course (the clubs sat next to them were a giveaway!) as well as couples and families. We sat in the main restaurant with beautiful views over Box Hill. Our waitress Libby was fantastic explaining the new menu and

102 SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 05

the Watermill ‘Stix’ starters that offer a tapas style sharing platter instead of a traditional starter. We heard the cocktails were impressive so ordered a Passion Fruit Martini and a French Martini. Both were beautifully presented in decadent crystal glasses and tasted superb.

RESTAURANT REVIEW

STARTERS With 9 Stix food options to choose from we opted for Crispy Pork Bites & Apple Caramel, Soy and Sesame Glazed Chicken with Spring Onion and Chilli & Lime King Prawns and they were amazing. The pork was crispy on the outside yet tender on the inside; no hint of fat and the chicken was succulent, perfectly yet delicately seasoned and melted in the mouth. The prawns were fresh and lime zingy; offset perfectly by the chilli which gave it an extra tang. The two sauce accompaniments, a spicy relish and a sweet chutney, were divine.

MAINS The Roast Shropshire Ross Cobb Chicken, Chorizo, Potatoes, Spinach and Saffron Alioli, as recommended by our waitress, was sublime. The flavours of the tenderly cooked chicken complimented the spice of the chorizo perfectly. We totally loved the Saffron Alioli dressing drizzled carefully over the entire dish and the vegetables were cooked perfectly in a light garlic oil dressing, making it both colourful, healthy and delicious. The standout dish of the day for us however was the Pizza. We went for the Steak, Caramelised Sweet Onion, Blue Cheese

And Rocket and honestly have never experienced a pizza like it. The base was crispy, yet the middle dough layer was thicker than a normal pizza (but not as thick as a deep pan) with an abundance of toppings - making it a truly different and sensational pizza meal experience. The steak was succulent, cooked perfectly and the sweetness of the onions and creamy blue cheese combination made it easily one of the greatest pizzas we have ever tasted.

IN SUMMARY Hats off to the chef and the creators of this amazing new menu, which also consists of Burgers, Steaks, Salads, Fish & Chips and Sunday Roasts. The Watermill are open from 9am for brunch till midnight everyday - and also do private hire if you are looking for somewhere to host an event or birthday party. As well as the food and ambience being stand out – a special mention has to go to their amazing staff. The manager Charlotte, head waiter Josh and front of house were so fantastic, attentive and made the day that much more special and enjoyable. It’s a joy to visit a restaurant that has such a good team behind it – you can tell it’s a passion not just a job for The Watermill staff – and that really shone through.

H

ello and a Happy New Year to you all! January is an opportunity to stop and take stock of the year that has passed, before we delve ahead into what is to come. It has been a tricky year for most, with uncertainty and worry. As some of you may know, I am a huge believer in self-care. Taking the time out to do something for you is so important for your physical and mental health. It can be anything from having a bath to getting a massage. Like many I lead a busy life, so I like

Ria Elaina Atkins A Mum’s Life Let me introduce myself – I’m Ria, Mum of two, married to my handsome hubby. I’m born and bred in my beloved Surrey and spend most of my time between here and London. I’m a handbag and shoe addict and lover of all things luxe. To find out more about Ria’s luxe lifestyle follow her on Instagram @ria.elaina 104 SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 05

THE BEGINNING to take some down time which doesn’t involve speaking to anyone. I love nothing more than a relaxing, but firm, full body massage to lull me into relaxation mode. My absolute favourite spas in Surrey have to be Pennyhill Park and Coworth Park. When I was 18 my Mother took me to Pennyhill Park for my first spa experience, I was hooked and still to this day believe it is the best spa in Surrey. I love how they have a variety of relaxation rooms, from the ice room to the thermal room, as well as indoor and outdoor pools. The best bit is the secret sensory room with gel beds that you get taken to after your treatments. Total and utter bliss! There are many wonderful apps that can help bring the spa to your home. Through one of these apps I found a very skillful masseuse who was just excellent at finding all my knots with the perfect amount of pressure. I put the kids to bed and set up a plinth in my lounge with candles and relaxing music. A little tip - I like to book the very last appointment of the day so that I can roll into bed and sleep with all the lovely oils on my skin. Many people struggle with sleep. I think it can be beneficial to seek help if you are in a pattern of not sleeping, as the root cause can stem from worry or anxiety. If you are experiencing this, please book an appointment with your GP who can make an appropriate referral for you. Alongside healthy eating and exercise, supplements are a great way to make sure you area getting enough vitamins and minerals. I find the vitamin world overwhelming so I love that JS Health Vitamins have ones targeting specific health needs. I love to take my daily JS Health Vitamins and can certainly see a difference since using the skin and digestion ones.

I find the Calm App really helps me to switch off, with a fantastic array of sleep stories and relaxing sounds. I find listening to stories read by Alan Sklar especially relaxing. I like to also use my Neom diffuser with lavender oils to address all the senses and send me into the deepest sleep possible. I recently attended a sound healing session which was one of the most unique experiences of my life. It’s an ancient meditative practice that uses aspects of music to improve physical and emotional health and well-being. My amazing therapist Dao of Chan Tri Wellness is a gong master and has a deepened understanding of the immense power of sound. Using the gong and sound bowls which she placed on various points along my body, she created harmonic vibrations which sent me into a deep meditative state. Sound therapy is known to work by a process called entrainment. This basically provides a stable frequency that our brainwaves can adapt to which takes us into a more relaxed consciousness. Studies have shown that if the body and mind are more relaxed, this then can help reduce the likelihood of illnesses that are associated with stress such as high blood pressure, depression and sleep disorders. I personally found after the session I had a greater sense of calm, I also had one of the best nights sleep that I have ever had….until the 6am wake-up call the next morning!

January Tarot Reading

Let’s find out what January will bring for you What Is Spirituality?

Page of Wands

The Star

Two of Pentacles

Something that you may hear a lot during Tarot Readings is the word spirituality. It is a word that has many different meanings and one that you should not be afraid of. In reality, spirituality can mean anything you want it to. It can mean believing in something that is bigger than you, or it can mean enjoying simple activities that take your mind to another place, it can mean anything. When you see or feel something that you can’t quite explain, where do you find your answers? Where do you find your comfort? When times get tough, how do you lift your spirits? This is where your spirituality lies. Now let’s get on to the reading... Your main card for this month’s reading is The Star. This means that hope is the word to bring with you into the New Year. Times have been rough over the last few years, but keeping our own personal purpose in mind is what’s going to make this year the most hopeful yet. Connect with your spirituality, whatever that may mean to you and enjoy as many moments as possible. Don’t despair when times get hard, as there is always hope for the future. Make sure to not disconnect with the people and things that you love the most, as that can often happen when we forget to be optimistic. Never give up and remember, you can’t have a rainbow without a little bit of rain!

The Page of Wands is a card all about inspiration and discovering new parts of yourself. It wants you to embrace the free-spirited side of your personality and redirect your energy towards the things that truly matter. A spiritual path is making its way to you and it’s up to you to decide what to do with it. The Star and the Page of Wands combination is about exploring what hope means to you. What are you hopeful about specifically? Have faith in your own excitement. A lot of the time we get excited and it doesn’t last long because we feel there’s a negative side to every emotion. Forget about this way of thinking and be free to feel as happy as possible! The Two of Pentacles is warning you of multiple priorities and wants you to work on prioritising them correctly. Don’t over commit yourself and reprioritise the things that aren’t quite working out the way you want them to. These three cards together show balancing decisions in a way that inspires you to be better. Get your priorities straight and allow yourself to adapt to the changes that are happening around you. Juggling multiple responsibilities can be tough, but remain optimistic and keep motivated. The best is yet to come. By Pia Louisa

22 MAY – 21 JUNE

24 JULY – 23 AUG

Taurus

Cancer

Virgo

21 APR – 20 MAY

22 JUNE – 23 JULY

24 AUG – SEPT 3

You begin the New Year in down-low mode. Whatever is going on behind the scenes or deep within you – you’re simply not ready to talk about it, Aries. This can be anything from that secret ambition to that secret love. What is in focus is your inner truth and your secret self. Think of the time between now and May as having an angel on your shoulder whispering answers to anything you need to know. The soul X-Files are yours to access and you may do this via therapy, the Tarot, astrology, spiritual exploration, self-help books, meditation, creativity, healing or any combination of the above. Expect answers to those big questions you’ve been asking to be delivered in unexpected ways now. And when they come they bring solutions and freedom. The truth is out there and accessible now, Aries. Just embrace it even if it’s not what you expected. It will set you free.

Who is Zooming you as 2022 begins? It’s going to be all about who you know as opposed to what between now and May, Taurus. No matter where you are or how you can circulate now, it’s important to nurture those existing connections and actively seek out new ones – any way you can. New and influential friendships open doors to new levels of experience and opportunity for you. Don’t go into hermit mode no matter what you do. Despite any restrictions, friends in high places or simply generous ones with no agenda, will enter your life and possibly spin it out in a fresh direction. Cocooning on the couch with that boxset? So no. Or if you are going to opt for that, at least invite others to a watch party remotely. 2022 says join in whether online or in person. That group, cause, party or larger-than-life social scene beckons. RSVP and don’t delay, Taurus.

120 SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 05

Big up those ambitions no matter what they are, Gemini. ‘22 is set to take you further – I’d describe it as a stairway to heaven in terms of your career, studies, public image, status and ability to impress people in high places. All thanks to Jupiter making all the right moves in the highest point of your chart. The only way is up for you this year. And even if you don’t work or work for a not-forprofit, you or your partner’s stock is on the rise. As could be your title or status – as in going from single to settled or watching that title on your business card magically ascend. It’s time to become very aware of how people in positions of influence and authority see you. There’s a saying you never get a second chance to make a first impression. Not true for you this year as you get more than one. Just ensure it is the lasting one you want to leave however. Time to step up – and let the world know you’ve arrived.

No more spinning that worn out tracksuit or rinse-and-repeat cycle that has had you feeling so stuck. The old cycle hasn’t been a goodie for you for quite some time, Cancer. The good news as we start ‘22 is that your escape route beckons. Your horizons broaden and after what has been a period of struggle or simply plain inertia, solutions propel you up, up and away and back into effortless potential once more thanks to lucky Jupiter now in its ruling sector of your chart. That doesn’t mean you can sit back and wait for opportunity to come and find you however. Travel or at least learning exploration will feature – but you have to kick start this. Perhaps even by signing up or clicking on that link. But take that first small step into a bigger world and Jupiter will provide the rest of the momentum and also place unlooked for solutions on your path. Who makes it happen? You do.

What’s on that Spotify playlist – or should be, as 2022 begins, Leo? How about Abba’s Money Money Money or simply Billionaire? Your money, assets, mortgage, legacies, benefits, loans, shares and what is shared with you and by you is in focus like no other time. The keys to the vault? Quite possibly you could be handed them or else the key to that executive washroom thanks to Jupiter working your power money sector this year. Handling larger sums of money is one potential as is bigging up that feeling of self-worth. You may be placed in charge of someone else’s resources or assets or someone gives you access to theirs. It may not be actual cash but time, entrée, expertise –is just as valuable nonetheless. Oh, and did I forget to mention your sexiness? It’s at an all-time high this year. Use whatever you have or are handed. Rewards are on offer like no other now.

Love makes your world go round this year, Virgo. Single? Put your landing lights on as at least one serious potential contender for your heart should appear as Jupiter transits your partnership sector between now and May and again in October-December. Dynamic duos of all descriptions feature and these are not limited to the love and marriage variety. That special working partnership, your bestie, collaborator or partner-in-crime – a key double act will open up your horizons and bring new experiences your way. Foreign affairs may feature. A lover from a place or galaxy far, far away. A business opportunity overseas. Settled Virgos could embark on a new journey together. But if it’s broke consciously uncoupling will be easier now than at any other time. You won’t explore 2022 alone, Virgo.

Work that ‘22 energy, Libra. Your day job, your studies if you are engaged in them, your wellbeing, your habits, routine and taking care of the everyday business of being you is set to change in highly beneficial ways thanks to Jupiter working all that and more for you this year. If you are seeking work or a better position, expect at least one offer coming your way. Working better, more freedom around your job, more energy and that work/life balance – Jupiter hands you solutions and opportunities around these. If you have been dealing with long term issues around health or wellbeing, this year offers treatment and remission. There’s a touch of everyday, practical magic in the air. It doesn’t let you escape those daily chores or responsibilities. But it does allow you to discover how to make them easier by working what you have better, smarter and with rediscovered joy.

Babies, children, your adult children, pregnancies, creative passion and yes, lovers or that person who could conceivably turn you into a parent, step-parent or bring children into your life in some way, are major themes for ‘22. Conceive the inconceivable now Jupiter is in your 5th. Jupiter acts as Fat Cupid, firing off those arrows in every direction. If you’ve felt you’ve been off the radar when it comes to romance, Jupiter pings more than one big love opportunity for you. What makes you stand out from the crowd, what you love to do and are good at – prepare for opportunities and discoveries now. Jupiter ensures you get noticed. Lucky breaks in the arts, work, your passion or simply entrée to glamourous, red carpet circles or rubbing shoulders with VIP’s can also happen. As can finding yourself in the spotlight. You’re ready for that close up now Scorpio.

Bring it on home for most of ‘22, Sag baby! Ruler Jupiter in your 4th of home wants you living it large. Many of you may upgrade your residence by moving to a larger one. Others could renovate or extend. Jupiter in here wants to hand you the keys to a bigger cycle of living. And also asks where in the world you want to call home? If it is in another part of the country or world, Jupiter can help remove you to wherever feels right. Benefits can come your way via family members or discovering ways to make money out of your home. That Airbnb listing for instance. Also the world can come door knocking either in the form of out-of-townor-country guests or connections, but also maybe in that new décor style. If you’ve outgrown that living space or have felt stuck where you don’t want to be, look out for moving experiences, opportunities and solutions between now and May and again through October and December. Escape to your kind of country? All possible in ‘22.

Mind those online opportunities and big up that internet presence in any way you can now, Capricorn. Writing, studying, speaking, sharing, design, that social media feed, that YouTube channel or your website are your potential and your playground now Jupiter is in your 3rd. Need a new job, confidence to launch that idea, device or even car? Jupiter can deliver now. This is all about just how far an idea or conversation may take you. Short journeys may feature now. Not just due to any ongoing Covid restrictions but Jupiter has you seeing your neighbourhood or country in a new way. And finding undiscovered opportunities or places within what is familiar. Some of you may return to studying this year if you are not satisfied with the education you received previously. What is the undiscovered country for you are what you have in the here and now. You are right where you are supposed to be, Capricorn. Jupiter says you already have everything you need to go anywhere you want.

Join the new rich list in ‘22 now Jupiter lands in your money zone, Aquarius. Are you investing in yourself and your future? It’s very important to understand that rich is a state of mind and that feeling can be got from other things than simply the cash you have in your bank account. Having said that, 2022 should present you with an opportunity to earn or big up that income in a new way. Jupiter however is all about the experience. So, when that extra money does arrive use it to buy yourself that as opposed to just more ‘stuff’. Especially if it will add to your soul enrichment or how you see your world. Expect a role model to arrive who embodies that rich feeling. Yes, they could be doing very nicely for themselves in that material sense. But it’s the way they love their lives and their attitude to their assets which shows you just what living a rich life is all about. Join them this year. Aquarius.

This is a once in many lifetimes cycle for you, Pisces. The presence of both your rulers – Jupiter and Neptune, in your sign has not occurred for 165 years. No pressure. Let’s talk about your look, appearance, style, brand and how others see and perceive you. If you have been focused these past few years on the inner you – take a look at whether the outer you actually reflects who you are inside. If adjustments and big ones need to be made, now is the time for fabulization. Jupiter says go big or go home. Or not in some cases as this cycle can trigger dramatic weight loss, repacking, cosmetic surgery or simply a complete image overhaul and relaunch. Don’t be surprised if you are drawn to a look you would never have considered in the past. Not only will you be loving it, others will too. Want to be famous or simply noticed? Jupiter hands you exactly what you need to do that. You are your own best calling card now. Dress to impress Pisces.

She recently created the online show ‘Wonderbirds’ in lockdown with her good friends Dee, Sherrie and Harriet and has also started dating nights in Surrey called ‘Surrey Singletons’, produces online TV Show ‘Beauty Angels’ with Linda Lusardi and participates in ‘Actors at Sea’ Saga Cruises – all while looking after three dogs!

DEBBIE ARNOLD FIRST OF ALL DEBBIE HOW DO YOU FIT THIS ALL IN?! If you want something done ask a busy person! YOU STARTED YOU TUBE AND FACEBOOK CHANNEL WONDERBIRDS IN LOCKDOWN AND IT’S STILL INCREDIBLY SUCCESSFUL NOW REACHING 18M VIEWS - YOU MUST BE PROUD OF THIS? Yes I am. We had two shows originally on a Tuesday and Thursday and now when GMTV’s Richard Arnold comes on we have 3 a week. He loves being henpecked by all of us lovely ‘Wonderbirds.’ YOU COVER SUCH A WIDE RANGE OF TOPICS IS ANYTHING TOO TABOO FOR YOU AND THE GIRLS?! We try not to cover politics! Unlike some episodes of ‘Loose Women’ we are also very friendly and kind. HOW HAS THE FEEDBACK BEEN ON THE SHOW? We have had some enormous stars come on and the feedback has been amazing! WHAT’S ONE OF THE BEST BEAUTY TIPS YOU’VE LEARNT PRODUCING ‘BEAUTY ANGELS’ WITH LINA LUSARDI? The other week we had a hugely successful make-up artist Ariana Poole on the show. I’ve always been a huge fan of red lipstick but never confident in wearing as I think it makes my teeth look yellow. I have now found out wearing red lipstick with a blue tinge to the colour really helps offset this. Great advice. YOU’VE ALSO WORKED ALONGSIDE SOME OF THE MOST FAMOUS FACES IN BRITISH TV INCLUDING JOHN CLEESE, OMAR SHARIF AND DAVID JASON – WHO WAS THE MOST FUN TO WORK WITH AND WHY? I felt very privileged to do ‘Minder’ and I loved working with George Cole. It’s always a pleasure to work with comedians too Jim Davidson, in particular, was great fun to work with.

HAVING APPEARED IN ‘EASTENDERS’, ‘CORONATION STREET’, ‘EMMERDALE’ AND ‘HOLLYOAKS’ WHAT WAS THE BEST SOAP TO WORK ON AND WHY? Got to be ‘Coronation Street’ as I starred in it twice – both in 1981 and 2014. I am originally a northerner, brought up in Sunderland, so The Street has always been my show. WHEN DID YOU FIRST MOVE TO SURREY? My ex-husband John Challis bought me to Twickenham in 1980 and I’ve been here ever since. First Twickenham, then Thames Ditton, then Oxshott and now Cobham. I love it here. CAN YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT THE ‘SURREY SINGLETONS’ NIGHTS YOU RUN? I put a message up on the Next Door Facebook Page as was so sick of all dating being online. We had 500 replies and almost crashed the site! Everyone said my idea was brilliant and the admin of Next Door said I should start a group. I did and we are now totalling 900 members across 3 platforms and roughly 150 singletons turn out to our events which we run every 6 weeks. We are different because we are a party - not a dating site. WITH THIS IN MIND, ALL OUR MALE READERS WOULD LIKE TO KNOW, ARE YOU SINGLE? Yes I still am - but would prefer to share my dog walking duties with someone in the future! WHAT DO YOU LOOK FOR IN A MAN? Kindness, no controlling behaviour, a sense of humour and height... I like tall men. IF YOU HAD TO TAKE 3 THINGS TO A DESERT ISLAND, WHAT WOULD THEY BE? Undereye concealer (Max Factor’s Panstick is amazing), contact lenses/glasses (so I can see!) and a dog for company. WHO WOULD PLAY YOU IN THE MOVIE VERSION OF YOUR LIFE? Lady Gaga.

WHO WOULD BE YOUR IDEAL CELEBRITY DINNER PARTY GUESTS? Have actually had dinner with all the people already! During an opening night party in LA, I was on a table with Rex Harrison, Jack Lemon, Walter Matthau, Billy Wilder, their wives and me. Great fun. BEST ADVICE EVER GIVEN? John Stride once said to me, “don’t believe bad reviews and don’t believe the good ones either.” MOST EMBARRASSING ITEM IN YOUR WARDROBE? I have a coat that I stole from the ‘Hollyoaks’ set and it has in large black felt tip pen on the back... “Property of the Hollyoaks Wardrobe Department. Please return to the Wardrobe Department” - I get some stares on dog walks when I wear this as it’s on the back not the inside label! WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE GROWING UP? I have always wanted to be an actress. WORST HABIT? Worrying. FRIDAY NIGHT OUT OR SUNDAY DAY IN? Chilled Sunday day in definitely. WHAT´S THE BEST THING ABOUT SURREY? Just beautiful – the first time I ever walked across Richmond Bridge I just fell in love with the place. WORST THING? The trains. CAN YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR ‘ACTORS AT SEA’ INITIATIVE PLANNED FOR JANUARY 2022? Ten actors go to sea with Saga Cruises and do workshops with passengers to create a big show at the end of the trip. ‘EastEnders’ creator Tony McHale is involved. We are (hopefully!) sailing in January with John Altman, Colin McIntyre, Sue Jenkins and Bob Barret around the Caribbean for 5 weeks on the Saga Spirit of Adventure.
