THE LOCATION The true potential of this project was immediately apparent at the first site visit. Nestled in the dense Milkwood forest, the Grootbos becomes the perfect setting for a serene refuge. Overlooking the phenomenal views of the bay and harbour, the surrounding mountains and northern valleys, the splendour that Hout Bay has to offer is endless. The site is protected by the Karbonkelberg Mountain from the infamous south eastern winds and is situated at the start of Chapmans Peak Drive, one of the most scenic routes along the Atlantic coast.

Only 20 minutes away from Cape Town, Hout Bay maintains an almost rural, neighbourhood-culture to complement its natural beauty. Perfectly located to become a new landmark, Sacha takes advantage of the potential along this strip on Main Road. It incorporates many aspects which add value to the neighbourhood and could function as a catalyst for future development.

Derek Lubbe from Living Planet Architects sought to pay respect to the natural beauty of the site while providing luxurious living. Bold, sweeping lines hint at a nautical theme. Sleek forms combined with a material palette of concrete, timber and glass provides an elegant, yet contemporary addition to the old town of Hout Bay. Exuding luxury, each apartment offers a spectacular view over the valley to the north, Little Lions Head to the west, and the Atlantic Ocean and the bay to the South West.

ABOUT SACHA - BY RICKY Sacha William Fertig was born in Zambia on 5 June 1974. He went to school in South Africa for a few years and lived here with us for three. A sweet, humble and caring young man, his heart remained in Zambia. He spoke Bemba, the local Zambian language fluently and longed to return to his home, our farm in Zambia. He died tragically at only 22 years old on 4 October 1996 after a major car accident less than a year after returning to Zambia. His ashes were spread at the rocks by the bronze leopard in Hout Bay. He loved Hout Bay. To pay our respect, we have named this new development in his honour.

THE DESIGN Sacha consists of 16 exclusive apartments with a public interface spilling onto the street. Pedestrian access is gained here, with a small retail opportunity open to the public. To accommodate parking, the building is raised two storeys above ground level, creating a shared podium level with a pool and deck, inviting residents to mingle, basking in the sun and embracing the marvelous view. Additionally, the top most floor functions as a shared roof terrace and viewing deck with barbecue facilities, el fresco dining, shaded lounging area, cloakrooms and protection from the elements.

THE FEATURES The apartments include two two-bedroom, three one-bedroom and ten three-bedroom units, as well as the impressive penthouse suite. It was crucial to find a balance between the practical aspects of everyday living and an aesthetically pleasing structure contributing to the fabric of the old town. The spatial planning accommodates a variety of layouts to suit the occupants’ needs - all bedrooms offer en-suite bathrooms, have two parking bays, fibre, DSTV, and temperature control systems to provide the utmost comfort. Other amenities include a concierge desk, bicycle store, an outdoor shower, and a garden store for those who want to grow their own flowers and herbs along the mountainside on the east.

THE LIFESTYLE Situated at the foothill of Chapmans Peak, cradled in the Baviaanskloof Mountain gorge along one of the worlds’ most scenic roads; Chapmans Peak Drive. Across the way lies the beach, coffee shops, eateries, Chapmans Peak Hotel, hiking trails, gym, MyCiti Bus stop and general amenities, giving rise to a walkable lifestyle more common in Europe. From its elevated position the views of the crystal blue water, crisp white beach and jagged silhouette of The Sentinal Mountain, consume the spaces of the apartments. Behind, the tree canopy of the wild olives and indigenous forest ground the building and bring a sense of serenity, reflecting the dappled light across the glass façade. It is a place to behold, to admire and to play.

THE VIEWS Welcome to the bay. Here you have it all. The Atlantic Ocean breaks on the white sand before you, mountains embrace the untamed sea, calming it as it enters this paradise. When you’re in paradise, The sweeping 180 degree views from Kommetjie Lighthouse to Little Lionshead Mountain imprint a postcard perfect image in your memory. No photo, video or media can illustrate the enormity of what you experience from here. At night the lights of the harbour reflect gently on the black glass like water, in yellows and orange, like floating candles in celebration of life. The faint outline of the Sentinel Mountain fades as the evening draws, until the soft light of the moon reveals her again. The white wash of the breaking waves on the shore is a constant reminder of the nature that surrounds.

‘Chappies’ is local speak for Chapman’s Peak Drive, one of Cape Town‘s most famous landmarks. Nine kilometres and 114 curves of breathtaking scenery connecting Noordhoek to Hout Bay. Some say it is the most spectacular marine drive in the world.
