Looking for a scrumptious treat?

Sussex is famous for its rich culinary heritage. Traditional Sussex cuisine reflects the county’s history and culture, showcasing the use of locally sourced ingredients and unique cooking techniques. And if it’s your first visit to the county, sampling some of these dishes is an essential part of experiencing the unique charm and flavour of the county.

One of the most beloved dishes in Sussex is the Sussex pond pudding, a dessert that dates back to the 17th century. The dish is made with a suet pastry that encases a whole lemon, butter, and sugar. As it cooks, the lemon's juice mixes with the butter and sugar, creating a sweet and tangy sauce that pairs perfectly with the rich, crumbly pastry.

Another classic dish from Sussex is the Sussex smokie, a smoked haddock dish, which is made by placing the fish in a container with hot, buttery water and

allowing the smoke to infuse the haddock. The dish is traditionally served with bread and butter and is a perfect option for a light lunch or a delicious snack.

Banoffee Pie was invented in a restaurant in Jevington, near Eastbourne during the early 1970s. Now found on many menus across the country, the recipe has seen many variations across the decades. However, typically it is a pastry or biscuit case, filled with banoffee toffee (cans of condensed milk, cooked or boiled), sliced bananas and whipped cream.

Stand where the battle for England’s future was fought. Its history began on the fateful 14th of October 1066, when after many hours of hard fighting, William the Conqueror’s Norman invaders finally defeated King Harold Godwinson’s English army in this very place.

Discover the dramatic story of the epic conflict in the visitor centre, where a host of interactives, displays of Norman and Anglo-Saxon weaponry, and a compelling film recount the background to the battle, the fighting, and how the Norman victory transformed the nation’s history.

Accompanied by an audio tour, explore the battlefield on the battlefield sculpture trail, where wooden sculptures depict Normal and Saxon soldiers. Head to the gatehouse rooftop to

soak up stunning views of the beautiful Sussex landscape, and enjoy the fresh air and open spaces surrounding the breath-taking ruins of the Abbey, built by William shortly after his victory.

Join us at the Bluebell Railway, one of the UK’s oldest heritage railway lines for a rare opportunity to travel on board the world famous Flying Scotsman this August. We will be running direct passenger trains 23 - 29 August between Sheffield Park and East Grinstead (connected to the main rail network, 40 mins direct train from East Croydon) as well as the limited availability evening Sunset Scotsman service. A range of stunning scenery

Sussex is known for its stunning natural landscapes and breath-taking beauty spots in the South of England, but you need to see it to believe it. From rolling hills to tranquil lakes, the county offers a wealth of natural beauty that draws visitors from all over the world, while also offering a tranquil retreat for weekends away from the city life.

Named the Best UK Place to Visit in 2023 by Time Out, Eastbourne should be on your bucket list this year.

The Turner Prize – the world’s leading art prize, comes to Towner Eastbourne from 28 September 2023 to 14 April 2024 showcasing the shortlisted artists across the entire gallery, along with a vibrant programme of events around the town to celebrate.

The Cuckoo Trail 17

The Cuckoo Trail runs for 14 miles from Heathfield to Hampden Park. It is mostly traffic free and will take you through woodland, open grassland, and pasture. It’s suitable for all ages and abilities making it a great place to walk, run or cycle. Not only is the trail a great place to be more active, it’s also the perfect place to view an array of wildlife. On the trail you might see cuckoos, green woodpeckers or dunnock sparrows, these are just a few possibilities!

If you’re looking to explore beyond the Cuckoo Trail, whether it’s for a short walk or something a little more challenging, Wealden Walks might be

for you. Wealden Walks is a collection of over 30 walks available throughout the district, ranging from 2 to 12 miles.

The 2023 Rye Arts Festival will take place in the medieval Cinque Ports Town between 15th and 30th September. The 52nd annual celebration will feature high quality entertainment from across the broad field of all the arts, including musicians, authors and speakers.

Attracting top talent

Sussex has been home to many famous individuals throughout history and up to the modern day. From literary giants to legendary musicians, the county has been a hotbed of creativity and talent.

One of the most famous individuals associated with Sussex is the renowned author Virginia Woolf. Woolf was born in London but spent much of her life in Sussex, where she wrote some of her most famous works. Woolfʼs house in Rodmell, known as Monkʼs House, has become a popular destination for literary enthusiasts from around the world and other tourists exploring her heritage.

Another literary giant (and one beloved by local residents) who called Sussex home was Rudyard Kipling. The author of such classics as The Jungle Book and Kim, Kipling lived in Rottingdean for many years before moving to Bateman's in Burwash where he lived until his death in 1936. His former home is now a museum dedicated to his life and works and Batman's is now a National Trust property open to the public.

In the world of music, Sussex has also played host to some legendary musicians. The Cure frontman Robert Smith, was raised in Crawley, while legendary guitarist Jimi Hendrix spent time in Sussex during the late 1960s, performing at local venues

such as the Brighton Dome. ABBA, of course, famously won the Eurovision Song Contest at the very same venue in 1974!

Sussex has also been home to some famous actors and actresses over the years. Dame Judi Dench, one of Britainʼs most beloved actresses, lived in the town of Westmeston for many years. Similarly, actor Benedict Cumberbatch, known for his roles in Sherlock and Doctor Strange, has a home in the town of Rye, as does former Doctor Who legend Tom Baker. Prior to her move to the US, singer Adele lived in Partridge Green. Beyond the world of the arts, Sussex has been home to some notable politicians and public figures, including David Cameron, Piers Morgan and Sir David Attenborough.

Sussex has, and will continue to be, a hub of creativity and talent, attracting many famous individuals from various walks of life. From literature to music, acting to politics, the county has played host to some of the most iconic figures in history. Lancing College Chapel is a marvel of Gothic Revival architecture and a Grade I Listed national monument.

Lying within the grounds of Lancing College, an independent day and boarding school nestled in the South Downs National Park, the Chapel hosts regular services for both the school and local community. Founded in 1868, Lancing College Chapel is the largest school chapel in the world, with the height of the nave standing at an impressive 90 feet.
