Raise the roof - Earnley Church

The chancel roof of what is believed to be one of West Sussex’s smallest churches is in severe danger of falling down. The battens are rotten and the tiles slipping. “The inhabitants of the tiny village of Earnley are determined to Raise the Roof by raising the £70,000 for repairs,” says Church Warden Chris Knight. “Our little church is at the heart of the village, countless generations have been married there, baptisms given untold joy to families, and the lives of those who have passed on celebrated. In Your Garden

Monthly gardening ideas & tasks by Andrew Staib of Glorious Gardens

Borde Hill - The World in One Garden

Borde Hill Gardens is a mecca for those interested in beautiful views, rare plants and Champion trees. Colonel Stephenson Clarke, who created the garden from the late 19th Century onwards, sponsored plant hunting trips throughout the world. The result is a fantastic collection of rare trees, including 65 Champion trees (these are the largest of their particular species in the whole of Britain).

Set in 383 acres of Grade 2 Heritage listed landscape, the gardens consist of a loosely connected arrangement of ‘rooms’- the Azalea Ring, Italian Gardens, the Rose Garden and perennial borders whilst being more wild on the edges giving way to lakes and open ground.

Harry Baldwin, the fresh faced and energetic Head Gardener, is passionate about how history and horticulture interweave in this space he looks after. We walk along a row of great Chestnuts which used to be on either side of the drive leading to the mansion, still occupied by the 5th generation of the founding family members. “This here is a Japanese Oak, one of only a handful that survived the original seed germination when they were brought back from Japan. I found one of these hiding in a hedge in Kew when I worked there which everyone had forgotten about. They were the last seeds plant collector Richard Oldham sent back from Asia before he died of Dysentry.” “And this is a Meliosma beaniana, one of only three in the British Isles that was bought at auction in 1932 and

transported by lorry and then horse and cart here from North London.” Harry shows me a black and white photo of its parent tree in China, a photo that is part of an extensive well-preserved archive. “It looks like its parent don’t you think? We measure it regularly and the trunk expands about 1cm every year!” I have the feeling I am walking around an art gallery and museum, not just a garden. We come to a huge magnificent 30m tree just coming into leaf. “This is a Chinese Tulip tree, a Liriodendron. For years we tried to propagate

it and then we noticed a sapling growing up. It did it itself.

This one will be one of the 130 grafted or propagated trees we are planning to plant in the gardens to celebrate 130 years of horticulture here” He points to a Camelia as we wind our way back to the Italian garden. “This is the double pink flowering Camellia ‘Donation’. It was raised here in the 1930’s and now is sold all over the world!”

Our walk passes boggy ground, great hollows made from sand mining, ancient woodland and views of lakes. “We will be making an educational space down near the lake, with an eco-lodge and cafe. I would like to leave behind a legacy of protecting this collection, and we are digitising the whole of the archive”. We pass a stand of Redwoods, the 3 Magnolia Sisters, and every so often

bones of the landscape. We finish at the Rose Garden. Created in the 1990’s after the owner, Mrs Clarke, read, to her surprise, an old 1902 copy of Countylife magazine praising the beauty of Borde Hill Rose Gardens. She decided to recreate this, and this quadrant of garden now consists of

Big ideas for small bathrooms

Small can be stylish & functional says Nick Roberts RMR Group

Debunking bathroom renovation misconceptions

With bathroom renovations, size doesn't matter. Like a chef whipping up a culinary masterpiece in a tiny kitchen, expert renovators can turn the smallest bathrooms into a luxurious oasis. Whether your bathroom is a cosy nook or a spacious retreat, there's always room for improvement.

Hiring an experienced construction or bathroom company is crucial to achieving the best design and installation for your bathroom. Professionals know how to work with available space, debunking the misconception that a small bathroom is a lost cause. In fact, small bathrooms can be transformed into efficient and stylish spaces that make you forget all about their dimensions.

Another common misconception about bathroom renovations is they're always expensive. While some projects can be costly, working with

a knowledgeable company can help you find the balance between budget and dream bathroom. From repurposing existing fixtures to choosing affordable materials, there are several ways to create a stunning bathroom without breaking the bank.

Popular bathroom design choices

A popular design in bathroom renovations is the floating vanity units. These sleek, wall-mounted fixtures save valuable floor space and provide a modern, minimalist look. Additionally, glass shower enclosures create an illusion of space, making even the tiniest bathroom feel larger. Don't let size limitations or misconceptions about bathroom renovations hold you back from creating the ideal bathroom. With the right expertise and design choices, small spaces can transform into stylish, functional retreats. It's not the size that matters - it's what you do with it. 5 ways to bring spring into your home

Giving the best impression to potential buyers

1. Add a burst of fresh colour with a selection of new accessories. Pops of colour can bring a whole new energy to a space, whether it’s a set of colourful kitchen accessories or new cushions in the sitting room. Pick a colour that makes you feel good and enjoy the same good energy in your home.

2. Brighter days draw attention to tired paintwork. Refresh your woodwork in your home to make the room feel instantly updated and ‘clean.’ It might seem an unnecessary job, but even refreshing the ceiling can dramatically enhance the light levels in a space.

3. Tackle that one big ‘problem area’ with a declutter for a great way to feel like you’re winning at life! Invest in storage baskets or shelving that

Trusted carriage and house clearance services in

will enable you to organise a disorganised area that bugs you to instantly feel a weight off your shoulders.

4. Swapping out your bedding for a new set is one of the very best ways to embrace spring in the bedroom. There’s nothing better than beautiful soft new sheets to aid a better night’s sleep. Try a light linen set for a relaxed, bohemian vibe, with no ironing required!

5. Mirrors are one of the most used pieces in an interior designer’s toolbox to bounce light around and create the illusion of space. Go big and position a floor-standing mirror to instantly reflect the new season outside. Midhurst

is very much open for business!

Shops & businesses are struggling following the Angel Inn fire

In recent weeks, Midhurst’s shops, cafes, and restaurants have experienced a significant drop in earnings, with some reporting losses of up to 80% since the closure of the A286 following the fire at the Angel Inn. The façade of the hotel is the only part left standing, and it has been temporarily stabilised to prevent collapse. The main road through the town is still closed to traffic, and, at the time of press, there is no re-opening in sight.

Many people are questioning whether preserving the facade is worth the serious damage being done to the town’s economy and the inconvenience to those living in and around Midhurst.

In the meantime, traders want to let it be known that Midhurst is open for business, despite appearances to the contrary. Both car parks are open - one at each end of the town - and it is possible to navigate the high street on foot.

Here are just some of the independent traders who are still very much open for business. There are many more along with superb range of eateries so do pay a visit to this lovely town and tell your friends! Sussex Local hasn’t charged for this feature. All images © www.christopherison.com

Reaching families...

Supporting young people with special educational needs

Many founders of charities or not-forprofit organisations decide to start their own organisation as a result of finding themselves unable to find the support they themselves need … Brian O’Hagan, Director of Reaching Families, is no exception.

In 2008, Brian had recently moved back to Worthing, after many years living in London, and had a child, James, who had been diagnosed with cerebral palsy at eight weeks old. Brian says, “When my son was poorly, I noticed that there was very little support for parents of children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) so I began to explore what could be offered to support parents and families and in doing so, enhance the quality of life for children with SEND and their families.” Having spent 25 years working in the voluntary sector Brian decided to use his skills to launch an organisation that could achieve these objectives.

Working with over 3,000 West Sussex families

Brian explains that the aim of Reaching Families is to empower families of children with SEND in order for them to “maximise the support they receive from external agencies, have the knowledge and skills to care for a child or young person with SEND and to improve their resilience and emotional wellbeing through the support of other families in a similar situation.

“We do that through the delivery of a one-stop shop of services that includes an in-depth parent -carer guide, an online library of factsheets and animations, training workshops and courses, benefits advice and a befriending service for parents of children undergoing diagnosis.” The charity also has parent support groups based in Billingshurst, Burgess Hill, Chichester, Littlehampton, Worthing and online via zoom. With another group to be launched in Shoreham later this year.

Every year, Reaching Families supports over 3,000 families with a range of projects and services. Although the charity does receive referrals from health, schools and the local authority, referrals are not necessary for those seeking support from the organisation.

Delivering a range of information and training services

Reaching Families achieves its mission is to “empower, inform and support parents and families of children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities in West Sussex,” through the delivery of a wide range of services. Possibly key amongst which is the charity’s parent-carer guide: “Making Sense of It All” –often referred to by users as the “parent-carer bible.” The guide is designed to enable and inform parents of children with SEND from birth through to adulthood, covering subjects including diagnosis, benefits and money matters, accessing support at school and from health & social care, and transition into adult life. It also contains a useful directory of local and national organisations, and an equally useful, and extensive, jargon-buster. The guide may be ordered free of charge as an eBook or in hardcopy format, subject to postage and packing, from the Guide Page of the charity’s website.

The charity also offers a series of fact sheets on childhood disabilities and rare syndromes, combining clinical information with local information on relevant projects, services and support for a particular condition. All information is localised to the needs of West Sussex families. Reaching families also produces information in the form of animated films – Animation Shorts – on a variety of subjects.

In 2021-22, 2,600 copies of the Making Sense of it All guide were downloaded/delivered to families, whilst over 10,000 factsheets were downloaded from the Reaching Families website.

Parent-carers of recently diagnosed children also have an opportunity to benefit from befriending and emotional support, from an experienced and specially trained parent-carer, under the charity’s Face-2-Face Befriending project. Volunteer based, the charity’s befrienders undergo intensive training, are DBS checked and have ongoing support and supervision.

Monthly support groups - Umbrellas Parent Support groups are based in Billingshurst, Burgess Hill, Littlehampton and Worthing and since Covid, a weekly online group meets on Zoom. These groups can be crucial for isolated parents, offering the opportunity to connect with other parents and signposting them to other relevant projects and services.

Amongst the information provided in Reaching Families’ Impact report for 2021 22, are figures illustrating the positive effect the charity has upon the lives of those who use its services. 90 percent of parent-carers reported improved knowledge in accessing support for their child, whilst 80 percent of parent-carers reported feeling more resilient in overcoming difficulties thanks to peer support. And 78 percent of parentcarers reported improved skills and selfconfidence in supporting their child as a result of attending a Reaching Families training course.

“£10 will pay for the cost of printing our parent guides for one West Sussex family”

Reaching Families is funded from a variety of sources including the National Lottery, the local authority, the NHS and various charitable trusts and foundations. When I ask about Fundraising Events, Brian says that, “We very rarely put on fundraising events mainly because we are a small team and do not have the resources for managing these sorts of events.” However, if you enjoy running, cycling, skydiving or putting on coffee mornings then Brian O’Hagan would be delighted to hear from you to discuss how you could raise much needed funds to sustain the work of the charity. “We have been very lucky to have had support from local people with fundraising, for example, a family in Littlehampton last Christmas raised money for us through a Christmas light show. Another lady ran a Zumbathon for us, many more have given donations.”

Reaching Families is also keen to hear from anyone who might want to volunteer with the charity. “We use volunteers in our befriending service… Our team of twenty volunteers provide emotional and practical support with things like

signposting, accessing other services, learning about their child’s condition and meeting other parent-carers.” There are other ways in which volunteers can contribute to the charity too – by promoting the work of Reaching Families at community events, representing the charity at groups in your own local area or by distribution information to community venues, such as preschools and GP surgeries.

Exponential growth in demand for services since Covid

Now, more than ever charities are struggling to provide their much-needed services. As Brian says, “Our biggest challenge is meeting an exponential increase in demand for our service. Since the start of the covid pandemic demand has increased in some projects by over 200 percent. Finding the funds to increase resources to meet that demand has been difficult particularly in the current economic climate.”

Notice how far you have come

We often hold ourselves to very high standards when it comes to our diet and exercise routines.

If we’re not seeing what we want to see – or if we’re not seeing it as quickly as we would like –we often throw in the towel and quit.

We end up with a bit of an ‘all or nothing’ approach as our interest rises and falls depending on where we feel in relation to our goals.

A good strategy to help maintain your consistency is to remember to look at how far you have come rather than how far you have to go.

Let’s say your ultimate goal is to be in a regular exercise routine. To you, that means 3 workouts a week. Your starting point was zero. Now, you’re getting 2 workouts most weeks and 3 sometimes. That is not failing – that is great progress!

How about if your goal is to get 10,000 steps a day. Your starting point was 2,000 and now you’re getting about 6,000… Again, that is not failing. You’re consistently able to do more than you could at the start. You are making progress!

Let’s say your nutrition goal is to cook three meals a day from scratch. Your starting point was cooking one meal a day yourself, and now you manage to cook two meals a day several times a week. Of course, there’s more work to do – but throwing the towel in and going back to your old habits is not going to help. You are closer to your goal than you were, so keep on making progress! So, when the going gets tough, remember to take a look back at how far you’ve come. Make sure you really allow yourself to notice the changes. Be proud of yourself, even if you’re not where you’d like to be yet, and make sure to find positives in the achievements you’ve made.

Men’s Health

Is cycling bad for men’s health?

With 2023 marking the 100th Annual Bike Week from the 5th-11th June this year, cycling has seen an increase in popularity over the last few years. Cycling is a fun and effective form of exercise, but some worry that pressure from a bicycle saddle can cause urinary, sexual, prostate problems and can even increase your risk of prostate cancer. Some data from clinical studies shows that side effects of bicycle riding in men are most often genital numbness. Rarer effects can include infertility, impotence, blood in the urine, twisting of the spermatic cord, prostatitis, or inflammation of the prostate, and elevated PSA levels. But do the pros of an active lifestyle outweigh the risks? Consultant urologist Simon Woodhams (pictured above) explains that, ”If you have a chronic prostate problem that’s provoked by using a conventional seat, you can switch to a recumbent seat. ‘Noseless’ bicycle saddles can reduce numbness, pressure and genital discomfort in male cyclists. A traditional bike saddle puts 25% to 40% of your body's weight on the nerves and

blood vessels down there, but a no-nose saddle shifts that weight toward the sit bones.”

Mr Woodhams concludes that, “Men who get the most exercise have a lower incidence of prostate cancer when compared with men who get little or no exercise. Exercising on most days of the week can help you lower your risk of developing prostate cancer. Bicycle riding is an excellent form of exercise and will not increase your risk of prostate cancer. Other ways to reduce your risk of prostate cancer are staying at a healthy weight and eating a wellbalanced, healthy diet that includes plenty of fruits, vegetables and whole-grain foods.” www.westsussexurology.co.uk

Smart motorways discontinued

Utilising the hard shoulder for safety on motorways

Road safety charity, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), welcomed the decision to scrap developing new smart motorways for safety reasons. RoSPA has campaigned for road safety for over a century and has highlighted the higher risk of collisions between stationary and moving vehicles on smart motorways compared to conventional ones, with road users calling for the return of the hard shoulder.

Road Safety Manager at RoSPA, stated drivers want the hard shoulder and motorists need to feel safe on roads. RoSPA welcomes plans to shelve construction of smart motorways and hopes the money will be used to make motorways safer in other ways. Live lane breakdowns can happen where a hard shoulder is in place, and it is only a relative place of safety. Collisions and injury can still occur, which is why RoSPA will continue to educate motorists on what to do in an emergency on the road.

Smart motorway safety feature investments are ongoing like the retrofit of emergency refuge areas.

RoSPA tips for encountering problems on the motorway: If a driver is on a motorway with a hard shoulder and needs to do an instant stop, use momentum to move over to the left lane and stop on the hard shoulder, turn on the hazards and ensure side lights are illuminated if it's dark. Be aware of changes in the car's handling, stop as far to the left as possible, get all occupants out of the car, and call for help using the nearest SOS phone. If the driver is on a smart motorway and can still drive, get to a service area or emergency refuge area. If they break down in a live lane, get the vehicle as far off the road as possible, turn on hazard lights, and get out of the vehicle on the left-hand side if it's safe, if not, stay in the car with the seatbelt on and call 999. www.rospa.com

Treyford: Historic Church

''Scheduled Monument' part 1 by historian David

But as time went on, the trees grew higher and the undergrowth thicker round St. Mary of Treyford, ancient the church gradually crumbled. Its five {?fine} memorials fell to dust, its rich windows, and altar paintings faded before wind and rain. The present rector of Elsted, the Rev. W.W. Whistler said: “Mrs. Harcourt's whim has left us a problem that may never be solved.

On 1st May 1938, an article by The Rev. William Whistler, appeared in the Sunday Express:In the forties of last century (1840's) there lived at Treyford the all powerful and self-willed Mrs. Vernon Harcourt. She owned the largest estates in the neighbourhood and was patroness of the local churches.

One day the rector of Elsted who included Treyford and Didling in his benefice, timidly approached Mrs Harcourt to inform her that the churches of Elsted and Treyford needed restoring.

“I won't do that,” decided Mrs. Harcourt. “We shall have another church, a much bigger one, with the highest steeple we can build. We shall erect it between the two other churches.”

“But, Madam,” pleaded the rector, “it will mean that the parishioners will have to walk miles to come to church.”

“If they really want to worship they will come,” was her reply. And so in 1849 the Old church of St. Mary Treyford was locked for good. The large new Treyford church, with its steeple overtopping all buildings for miles, was opened.

“The new Treyford church is too large and is inconvenient for all the surrounding parishes. Most {many} of the people have to walk two miles to reach it. The result is that there is generally only a handful of people there...'

On the 21st July 1934, a local meeting of the Sussex Archaeological Society visited the Old Treyford church, where the Rector and Mr Walter H. Godfrey acted as conductors. The Rev. A.A. Evens wrote an account of this excursion in Sussex Notes and Queries:-

The old Treyford Church stands on what must be a prehistoric tumulus, circular and of a considerable height, so that the spot must have been long hallowed before a Christian church was built. Very often, old churches have been placed on spots long consecrated with human worship. The church dates from the thirteenth century, having been erected in the early English Style. There are however, architectural features apparent which indicate that a still earlier church existed on the site and was incorporated with the later structure:-

Part two continues in next month’s issue.

Stansted Forest’s sweet chestnuts

Last month I wrote about Stansted House. This month I am going to write about the Forest in which that House stands, and in particular about one of its trees, the sweet chestnut. It was often used, along with oak and lime, by 18th century landscape planters such as Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown and Humphry Repton to provide great height in woods and parkland. It is quite common in the South, preferring both a warmer climate than up north, and deep, well drained fertile soils. It was the Romans who first introduced sweet chestnuts into Britain. They ground down the shiny red-brown nuts to make flour, or added milk to make polenta, a form of porridge. I have come across sweet chestnuts that date back many hundreds of years, as at Mottisfont Abbey, Petworth House and Halnaker House. Locally, some of the finest sweet chestnuts border the mile-long avenue known as The Race which runs north-eastwards from Easebourne Priory on the outskirts of Midhurst. Their trunks are gnarled, twisted, contorted with extreme age, and are a magnificent sight.

Stansted Forest’s sweet chestnuts are much younger. We can be precise as to when they were planted, as a plaque on Middle Lodge, facing the Broad Walk, states that ‘The new plantation was commenced on the last day of the reign of King George III of blessed memory, 29th January 1820’, so that makes them just over 200 years old. The trees were planted to create long avenues and vistas. Many of these standard, mature trees are cut down, however, before they develop ‘ring shake’, with cracks opening up through the grain, causing the timber to fall to pieces when sawn. But if felled in their prime, the timber is strong and durable, its lengths of sawn planks having many uses.

Smaller trees are regularly coppiced. Chestnut coppicing as a method of woodland management has been practised since Neolithic times, 6000 years ago. It occurs early in the year, before birds start nesting. The Forest is divided into square sections or compartments, and coppiced regularly on a cyclical basis. The length of the cycle is determined by the uses intended for the wood; the bigger the pieces of wood required, the longer the cycle. The cycle range is usually between ten and sixteen years. The tree is cut right down almost to ground level. All that is left is the cut stump or ‘stool’. Within a short time new shoots begin to appear from buds lying under the inner rim of the bark, and grow quickly upwards and straight. They are perfect for making into long poles, previously used in the hop-growing industry, or to make cleft fences and stakes. Other uses were for furniture, trug baskets, walking sticks, charcoal, firewood. Nowadays the uses are far fewer, in fact mainly for biomass fuel. Chestnut wood chips, stored in the Bio-fuel Barn, are used to fuel Stansted House’s heating system (2008), meeting all its needs. Goodbye to those eleven expensive oil-fired boilers.

A picnic favourite with a contemporary twist

Ingredients - Serves 4

• 200g cooking chorizo

• 200g sausage meat

• Small bunch of finely chopped parsley

• 6 eggs

• 100g plain flour

• 150g breadcrumbs

Method

1. Soft boil 4 eggs, then cool immediately in very cold water.

2. Take the skin off the chorizo and then blitz in a food processor until you have a sausage meat texture.

3. In a bowl, mix the chorizo, sausage meat, and parsley – season with pepper

4. Weigh out the mixture into 100g balls.

5. Peel the soft-boiled eggs and wrap your meat around them gently, taking care not to break the egg (using wet hands helps the meat not to stick to them). Rest for 1 hour.

6. Prepare three bowls; one with flour, one bread-

that success, Millie scored yet another hattrick against our penultimate opponents from the pool game and we ran out 3-0 winners.

In our final group match we played with great pride and passion winning 2-0, sealing ourselves a place in the semi-finals. The pitches we played on at East Grinstead were truly huge and as such our energy levels were certainly starting to dip!

After winning our locality event a team of hockey players took to the AstroTurf at East Grinstead hockey club. It is our first experience of the county finals in hockey and our team of Year 6s: Millie, James, Joshua, Lucas, Leila, Chester, Ruso and Archie represented us amazingly! We played in two pools with matches against teams from all over Sussex. We began understandably nervously, and drew 0-0 against our first two opponents despite lots of chances to score. In our next match we gained confidence and played freely, winning against them 5-2, with Millie scoring an excellent hattrick! Fired up by

Community Day

The rain stayed away when Midhurst Rother College recently held their Community Day. The annual event, which aims to bring the local community together, showcases a wide variety of clubs, organisations, charities and local businesses which contribute to the communityspirit inandaroundtheMidhurstarea. This was particularly needed this year, following the recent fire in the town which has impactedso negatively on businesses North Street and the surrounding roads. The event brought people into Midhurst not only to the event, but also meant visitors could take the time to supporttheshopsintown.

Entertainment was provided by young

buskers from the MRC Music Department, who were raising funds for new instruments. Midhurst Foodbank, Midhurst Community Hub, UK Harvest, and WSCC Waste Prevention Team were on hand to advise and help people in thistime offinancialhardship. With over 50 businesses agencies and groups taking part, there was an array of lifestyle, leisure and fitness, fun family activities, local artists, creators and makers plus delicious food and drink. It was all locally produced, locally grown, local people, eco-friendly, sustainable, renewable, recycled or recyclable, reflecting on the event’s evolution, over the years, from the MRC Sustainability Day. called Smile which sounded wonderful with so many children singing together.

Our dance club took part in the Rother Valley Arts Festival at the end of last term on the stage at MRC. They performed two dances to 'Never gonna not dance again' by Pink and 'Pretty on the inside' by Chloe Adams, both choreographed by Katie Stevens. They really did us proud with a very polished performance which they clearly enjoyed sharing with an appreciative audience. Twelve local schools took part sharing dance, choral and instrumental performances.

Sticking with the arts – our Year 5 children (all 58 of them!) took part in the Rother Valley All Sing, again at MRC. Mrs Stevens led the morning in which our children joined forces to become a 150 strong choir learning part songs, trying their hand at some beatboxing and singing a round song

Rabbits and Badgers had a very busy second half term, polishing off their lines and acting skills ready to share their end of term production Rock Bottom. The children rose to the occasion and really enjoyed performing to an adult audience because ‘they got the jokes’ and this musical really did pack in the puns.

Our Foxes and Otters class both been working on optical illusions – Foxes using paper and Otters using photography, which required them to think carefully about the perspective of each shot to create their finished pieces – both classes had great fun and produced some excellent work.

Sullivan manages to put an amusing slant on most of our tiresome and mundane experiences with his clever use of words and rhyme. One moment he is describing our varying seasons with impassioned words, next there are rib-tickling rhymes about talking animals.

This Poem Casserole is exactly what it says. A pot pourri of day-to-day life.

Egrets & the forming of the RSPB

What is the Connection?

Pitched against a moody grey sky, or the pale tan reeds of RSPB Pagham Harbour, the pure white egret is a magical sight. You are likely to see Little Egrets and Cattle Egrets, and if you’re lucky, you might also see the stunning Great White Egret.

Although there is some evidence of egrets in the UK dating back to the fifteenth century, detailed information is scarce. This all changed in 1989 when Little Egrets started to arrive from Europe; now more than 1100 pairs are breeding in the UK.

Little Egrets

The Little Egret is a common sight around RSPB Pagham Harbour and Medmerry. This elegant bird with its black beak, black legs and somewhat comical yellow feet may seem rather gentle and unassertive compared to the more raucous seabirds of the area. During breeding season it displays beautiful long white plumes on its nape and back.

Cattle Egrets

Little Egrets could be confused with another very recent resident – the Cattle Egret, which has been breeding at Pagham Harbour since 2020. As the name would indicate, they are likely to be seen pecking around the feet of cattle for insects to feed upon. You might also notice that it is a stockier bird with shorter legs, a smaller head. During the breeding season, its bill turns yellow and the plumage takes on a orangey tan colour on its crest, breast and lower back.

Great White Egrets

These large, pure white herons are a magnificent sight. If you spot a Great White Egret at RSPB Pagham Harbour or Medmerry it is likely to be a visitor from Europe, or on its way to or from a breeding site in the UK – more than 60 young birds fledged in Somerset in 2022 alone – per-

haps one day they’ll be breeding here in West Sussex too.

The Fashion for Feathers

What is the connection between egrets and the forming of the RSPB? From 1870 – 1920, the fashion for feathers in ladies’ hats was booming, fuelling what became one of the most lucrative trades in the world. It was an industry which saw the decimation of millions of birds both at home and abroad: Native species such as kingfishers, great crested grebes and owls were hunted, as well as birds of paradise, ostrich, peacocks, parrots, macaws, humming and many, many more.

Three Pioneering Women

From this emerged three key women: Eliza Phillips, Etta Lemon and Emily Williamson, all passionate about the lives of birds and conservation. While Emily Williamson was forming The Plumage League in Manchester, Eliza Phillips and Etta Lemon were starting The Fin, Fur and Feather Folk in Croydon; they later joined forced to form the Society for the Protection of Birds (SPB) in 1889.

Activism against feathers in fashion

In 1890 they produced their first leaflet: ‘Destruction of Ornamental Plumaged Birds’, which focused on the annihilation of the egret population, appealing to women to stop buying hats with feathers.

They went on to disseminate thousands of leaflets denouncing the hunting of birds and the use of feathers in fashion. In 1904 the SPB received the royal charter from Edward VII and became the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds as we know it today.

Be a Friend of the South Downs

If you love the South Downs, then you should join the only membership organisation dedicated to looking after them. As of this year, The Friends of the South Downs has been working to protect the area for 100 years.

The threats to the Downs may have changed over the last 100 years, but we still remain vigilant to protect the natural beauty of the area, promote access and conserve the landscape. We monitor all planning applications in the South Downs National Park to ensure that they will not damage the landscape and we fund conservation projects such as path improvement and replacement of stiles with kissing gates to improve access. We also run projects to encourage children to know and use the Park.

Our Centenary in 2023 provides a great opportunity to celebrate the Downs and includes a number of significant events and activities

• Stimulating talks

• Themed walks and strolls and a cycling festival

• Lottery funded projects to help children learn about the Downs

• A project to improve a footpath for wheelchair use.

We are the only membership organisation dedicated to protecting the South Downs. Why not join us to help with our work or to meet new people on our large programme of guided walks? friendsofthesouthdowns.org.uk
