Twenty-eight years ago Henr y and Jeanette decided they were too old to manhandle cabinets anymore. With that decision, they handed over the custom-cabinetr y business to their son, James, and opened Lonesome Pine Nurser y on the same property. “People are much nicer buying plants!” Linda Neighbors, a customer since day one, quips “Henr y charged extra for these weeds!” Jeanette says, “We don’t have a business, we have one big family ” and that really is how it feels at Lonesome Pine. In October 2020 Henr y passed away after 52 years of marriage to Jeanette. But his legac y lives on at the nurser y in a por trait that sits among the plants in the greenhouse, keeping Jeanette company in spirit during her work days.

KOLACHE KITCHEN
It’s been more than 38 years since Irene Wassermann pulled that first tray of kolaches out of the oven.
Irene and her husband, Mike, opened Kolache Kitchen Nov. 17, 1984, at 23108 SE Dodgen Loop.
The ‘Kitchen’ is now operated by their daughter, Carol White, and is still booming today.
While Czech pastries continue to be the big seller, Carol and her staff also make a huge selection of pies and casseroles.
“We added the homemade casseroles about 15 years ago and they continue to be in demand,” she said. “Right now, I’m making lasagna, but we also have King Ranch chicken, chicken spaghetti
and chicken pot pies.”
While Carol was busy being a mom in the early days of the Kolache Kitchen, she learned cooking skills from Irene by working every Saturday. In January 2001, she took over the business.
Despite the pandemic and related supply issues, Kolache Kitchen remains as popular as ever.
“People still want our kolaches, and we’re going to keep on making them,” she said.

Lastovica Jewelers
One of Temple’s most popular jewelry stores has been owned by the same family since 1950 when Alfred Lastovica Sr. moved here from Abilene. The World War II veteran had worked at a jewelry business in Abilene and decided to take the next step — open his own store.
Today, the business that Alfred built is run by two sons and their wives — Johnny and Diane Lastovica, and Billy and Helen Lastovica.
“Dad opened up in the old Professional Building downtown,” Johnny said. “It’s being redeveloped into apartments now, but Lastovica’s Jewelry was located on the corner of Central and 2nd Street.”
The business relocated several times in the downtown area, then moved to its current location on South 31st in 1996.
The Lastovica boys were both Temple
born and raised.
“I graduated in 1971 and Johnny was a year behind,” Billy said. “We both
went to Kilgore Junior College, but I graduated from Sam Houston State. Johnny specialized in watch repair,
and Billy learned the goldsmith and jewelry repair trades. Soon they were ready to go to work in the Temple store.
“We’re a full-service jewelry store,” Johnny said. “We repair watches and jewelry, and we custom design rings and other pieces.”
“Our biggest sellers are wedding rings — the ones with big diamonds,” Billy said with a grin. “We also sell a lot of Lone Star-cut blue topaz. Blue topaz is the state gemstone of Texas.”

Temple Granite Works
If you grew up in or around Temple, there’s a good chance the folks at Temple Granite Works have served your family. The monument company located on South Main Street on the edge of Downtown has created tombstones for thousands of local loved ones.
Temple Granite Works is a fourthgeneration family business created in 1917 by F.S. Walker. Today, it is owned by his great-grandson, Scott Morrow.
“F.S. was a stonemason in Scotland and he emigrated to Vermont in 1911,” Morrow said. “He wasn’t especially fond of New England winters, so he moved to Texas. He had met a man in Vermont who was originally from Florence, Texas.
F.S. decided Central Texas sounded pretty good.”
“It worked out well,” Morrow added with a smile. “He met my great-grandmother — she was from Florence, also.”
Walker and his bride moved to Temple
and opened Temple Granite Works. He partnered with members of the Terrell family who had owned a monument shop in Temple during the 1890s.
The business was initially located on Adams Avenue near First Methodist Church, but moved to its present-day location in the 1920s.
“He needed to be near the railroad,” Morrow explained. “Back then, granite was shipped by train, and it was easier to unload it near the tracks than to haul it across Downtown.”
Back then — like today — granite used by the Temple monument maker came from across the country and from quarries overseas.
“My great-grandfather left behind a legacy of handout monuments of granite, marble and stone,” Morrow said. “You can find his work in cemeteries throughout Central Texas — especially at Hillcrest here in Temple.”
Alfred Lastovica opened his doors in 1950, in downtown Temple with the help of his wife, Joan. Once the store was running smoothly, Joan returned to her career as a registered nurse. The Lastovicas were blessed with three sons and one daughter The boys followed in Alfred Sr.’s footsteps.
Johnny’s irst day at the store was the day after his graduation from Kilgore College in 1974, where he earned his degree as a Certiied Horologist and Jewelry Repairman. Alfred literally handed his son the keys to the store, and left the next day for a much needed weeklong vacation! Johnny quickly learned how to manage Lastovica Jewelers.
Billy came on board in 1981, after earning his B.B.A. at Sam Houston State University as well as a degree at Kilgore in 1981, where he mastered jewelry crafting and casting. Alfred Jr. is a GIA Certi ied Gemologist in Houston
When you visit the store, you’ll also meet Johnny’s wife Diane, and Billy’s wife, Helen. The Lastovicas are experts in assisting you in the selection of that special item.

Old Jody’s Restaurant
It’s been 60 years since the first burger was flipped at Jody’s Restaurant — now known as Old Jody’s.
It’s the sole survivor of Temple’s burger era, a time when big-league burgers were served up at places like Chuck Wagon, the French Quarter, Charcoal Inn and Where It’s At.
Those places are long gone — Jody’s is going strong.
“My family opened this place in 1963 and I’ve had it for the past 40 years,” said Joey Franks. “It was originally a little fast-food stand but we turned it into a restaurant.”
“We started with burgers and fries, and those are still our most popular menu items,” Franks said. “But we also serve a ton of seafood — catfish, oysters and shrimp, all hand-breaded and deep fried.”
“We also are known for our salads. We
made a chef salad with grilled chicken for the health conscious, and we use fried chicken for those who aren’t.”
So what makes Jody’s burgers so good?
“Just good, fresh meat,” Franks said with a grin. “We get fresh meat every other day — it’s never frozen, and that makes a difference. We’ve used the same meat company since the start.”
“I’m always adding things, both to the menu and to the building,” he said. “Over the years we added seafood and Frito pie. It’s very popular as well.”
In late 2022, Old Jody’s added an outdoor patio and frequently hosts live music.
“I’m trying to do the music during the week,” he said. “Musicians are busy on weekends. I’m planning on eventually having live music every Wednesday and Thursday, but right now it’s kind of random. We’ll see how it goes.”

Temple Feed & Supply
DAVID STONE | TEMPLE DAILY TELEGRAM
A longtime fixture in Downtown Temple will soon move to bigger digs on Loop 363.
Temple Feed & Supply, owned by Lindsey Strait and her brother, Adam Lucksinger, started in 1983 when they purchased an existing feed business at the location on Main Street on the north side of the railroad tracks.
“We opened the Temple business, and in 1998 we expanded to Belton,” Lindsey said. “But we will be moving the Temple business to the intersection of the loops where Farm Equipment Services was located for years.”
“The new location will be convenient for the area’s farmers and ranchers,” she said. “That area is the hub of Temple’s agricultural community — it’s right where people from Rogers, Cameron,
Academy and Holland come into town.”
The new location will be on 13 acres, and the existing building will become a warehouse.
“Construction has already started on a new retail center, a garden center and a big building for storing and selling hay,” she said. “The garden center will sell flowers, vegetable plants and trees.”
“We will have some gift items, t-shirts and shoes, but our focus will be on farm supplies, garden necessities and pet products.”
“We’re hoping to open in early fall,” Lindsey said. “We’re super excited. Construction is under way, and they are making great progress.”
The current location was purchased by the city of Temple more than a year ago.
