A city can be considered ideal for obvious issues such as investment opportunities, professional growth or as a second residence. In addition, metrics that might be considered include political and social, medical, schools and higher education, public services, entertainment, housing and environmental factors. These considerations provide guidelines we can use to decide if a city has the parameters to obtain the desired quality of life.

Una ciudad puede considerarse ideal para vivir por algunos temas evidentes como son: oportunidades de inversión, crecimiento profesional o una segunda residencia. Además, dentro de estas métricas se toman en cuenta los entornos político y social, médicos, escuelas y educación, servicios públicos, entretenimiento, vivienda y medio ambiente. Esto nos da la pauta para decidir si una ciudad tiene los parámetros para obtener la calidad de vida deseada.

Los Cabos refuerza su posición como uno de los lugares de moda. Es ampliamente considerado uno de los destinos de lujo más exclusivos, ofrece a los viajeros una experiencia inigualable que lo destaca de otros destinos de sol y playa a nivel internacional. Todo esto es gracias al servicio de su gente y a la constante profesionalización en las empresas turísticas. Por supuesto, sin dejar de lado las impactantes inversiones en infraestructura. Los primeros hoteles fueron empresas familiares en lugares privilegiados como Palmilla, Chileno y Finisterra. Y entonces sucedieron varios efectos, los planetas se alinearon, la inversión se dio, los planes llegaron y el desarrollo de Los Cabos se hizo viral… detonó. En poco tiempo, ciertas áreas brillaron por su exclusividad, como Pedregal, Palmilla, Cabo del Sol y Cabo Real. Poco a poco, la aceptación del destino empezó a ganar notoriedad. En números anteriores de Tendencia se ha narrado como Los Cabos fue creciendo a principios de los años 80.

Los Cabos continues to reinforce its position as one of the top places to visit. It is widely considered one of the most exclusive luxury destinations and on par or superior to other international sun and beach destinations. Travelers are offered an unparalleled experience thanks to the service and the constant professionalization of tourism businesses. Of course, we can’t forget the almost shocking investments in infrastructure. The first hotels were family businesses in privileged places such as Palmilla, Chileno and Finisterra. And then the right pieces came together, the universe conspired, the investments were deposited, the plans made, and the development of Los Cabos went viral ... it detonated. It took no time for certain areas to become known for their exclusivity, such as Pedregal, Palmilla, Cabo del Sol, and Cabo Real. Little by little the popularity of the entire destination began to gain notoriety. Past issues of TENDENCIA have noted how Los Cabos was growing. We are talking about the early 80s.

A raíz de este crecimiento, la visión turística se desarrolló rápidamente, con nuevos planes y estrategias, incluidos el tiempo compartido y fraccional, hoteles todo incluido y posteriormente, la renta de propiedades que incluyen todos los servicios y en algunos casos hasta vehículos como autos y yates. Las razones para vivir y quedarse a disfrutar esta península son muchas y variadas, cada uno puede tener la propia. El factor común es la belleza y armonía natural entre el azul del mar, el verde de la naturaleza y los diversos colores del desierto que contrastan con el atardecer. As a result of this growth, the vision for tourism rapidly developed with new plans and strategies, including timeshare and fractional, all-inclusive projects and subsequently, the rental of properties that include all services. In some cases, even the rental of cars and yachts! Reasons to live and stay to enjoy this peninsula are many and diverse! Everyone can have his or her own. However, the common factors are the beauty and natural harmony between the blue of the sea, the green of nature and the different colors of the desert that contrast with every sunset. Un reconocimiento de tal magnitud representa retos en los que tendremos que trabajar residentes actuales y futuros, incluido el número de turistas que nos visitan año con año. Debemos concentrarnos no sólo en mantener la belleza —lo que ya es una tarea titánica—sino mantener el delicado equilibrio de los elementos que comprenden la sustentabilidad para que más allá de conservarlos, podamos ser el primer lugar en los destinos por visitar en los próximos años. Posiblemente en el rubro en el que tenemos cubierto el trabajo, es el medio ambiente. Numerosas asociaciones civiles, población en general y el sector público trabajan constantemente en reducir la huella que dejamos en el destino, principalmente mediante labores comunitarias y campañas de concientización.

Mediante la reforma de la Ley de Equilibrio Ecológico del Estado, Baja California Sur se convirtió en el primer Estado de la república en prohibir el uso de bolsas plásticas, contenedores de poliestireno expandido o unicel, popotes plásticos y en general contenedores desechables de un uso. Este fue un gran logro que beneficiará al Estado y nos puso, una vez más, en los titulares internacionales.

A recognition of such magnitude also represents challenges that affect both current and future residents, including the large number of tourists who visit us each year. We must focus not only on maintaining the beauty of the destination, which is already a titanic task, but maintaining the delicate balance of the three elements of our sustainability. With enough effort, we can be the number one destination to visit in the coming years. The area where we possibly have the most work done is the environment. Numerous associations, residents and the government are constantly working to reduce the footprint we leave on the destination.

Through the reform of the Ecological Balance State Law, Baja California Sur became the first state in the republic to ban the use of plastic bags, expanded polystyrene containers, plastic straws and disposable containers in general. It is without doubt a great achievement that will benefit the destination and, once again, earn international headlines.

Nuestro compromiso debe ir más allá, no queda duda, empezando por ser conscientes y responsables de nuestros desechos para evitar que en tiempos de lluvias y huracanes terminen en el mar; para que nuestras aguas negras reciban el tratamiento adecuado y podamos alimentar eficientemente los mantos acuíferos, sembrando árboles principalmente en espacios públicos y vialidades para hacer más fácil caminar en ellas y alentar el uso de medios no contaminantes de transporte como la bicicleta. Uniendo esfuerzos podemos obtener resultados maravillosos. Los temas más complicados de la sustentabilidad son el social y el económico, porque se nos dificulta comprender la manera en cómo nuestros actos individuales pueden afectar a todo un sistema ya establecido. Podemos empezar por pasos pequeños como comprar nuestros alimentos y perecederos en tiendas locales, favoreciendo a los pequeños productores y eliminando el mayor número de intermediarios en el proceso de adquisición; contratar personal local en lugar de importar mano de obra, brindándoles la protección social que les corresponde por ley lo que reducirá paulatinamente los asentamientos irregulares, pues podrán adquirir una vivienda digna, aumentando la profesionalización de la población, de esta manera, ellos y sus familias tendrán posibilidades de terminar la escuela, reduciendo significativamente cualquier acto de violencia e ilegalidad al tener los medios económicos necesarios para tener una vida digna.

But our work is far from done. We must be aware and responsible for our waste. When it rains and during hurricane season, it ends up in the sea. The most complicated issues of sustainability are social and economic, possibly because it is more difficult to understand how our individual actions can affect an entire established system. We can start with small steps such as buying our food in local stores, favoring small producers and eliminating the largest number of intermediaries in the acquisition process. Hiring local workers instead of importing labor and providing them with the social protection provided by law can gradually reduce homelessness as people will be able to afford decent housing. Increasing the professionalization of the population can make it easier for residents and families to finish school. One result will be the significant reduction of violence and other illegal activity once people can take advantage of the financial opportunities necessary to establish a decent quality of life.

La manera como el gobierno puede mantener los servicios e infraestructura funcionando es mediante las contribuciones de toda la población, como el pago del impuesto predial para los que adquirimos propiedades, además de unirnos al padrón de contribuyentes conforme lo indican las leyes nacionales. El uso de empresas, plataformas y aplicaciones para la renta de nuestros inmuebles nos pueden generar ingresos atractivos, solo debemos ser conscientes en cómo las administramos y cómo podemos beneficiarnos todos como destino de estas actividades. El pago de impuestos sobre las rentas, la generación de empleos y el registro de nuestros vehículos para obtener placas locales, hacen que la ciudad funcione y mejore día a día.

The way the government can keep services and infrastructure working is through contributions from all the population, such as the payment of property taxes for those of us who acquire property here as well as joining the taxpayers list as required by national laws. The use of companies, platforms and applications for the rental of our properties can generate very attractive income but we must be aware of how we manage our properties and how we can all benefit as a destination. The payment of income taxes, the generation of jobs and the registration of our vehicles make our destination work and, only in this way, can we improve day to day.

El estilo, la calidad y el nivel de vida que nos ofrece supera estadística y cualitativamente la media nacional, con una gran cantidad de miembros extranjeros, y seguramente también la internacional. Hoy lanzo una invitación a todos los que formamos parte de esta comunidad, sin importar el tiempo que hemos vivido aquí, nuestra nacionalidad o los días que como turistas pisaremos esta tierra: seamos responsables y conscientes del lugar que amamos. ourdes Macías no ve el trabajo como trabajo. En realidad, lo ve como algo mágico que la invita a permanecer activa y cuando empieza, no puede parar. Es una persona que conserva gran energía y la dedica al máximo en nuevos proyectos, especialmente si involucra su pasión: diseño de interiores.

La idea de crear un hotel tipo hacienda surgió de su hermano Gabriel. Cuando le platicó lo que quería hacer, ella empezó a leer libros de la época del Porfiriato. En ellos encontró fragmentos donde se hablaba de los muebles que trajeron los españoles a México. Lourdes lo describe como ecléctico, un sello que podemos apreciar en el mobiliario del Castillo de Chapultepec en la Ciudad de México.

The idea of creating a hacienda-like hotel came from her brother, Gabriel. When he told her what he wanted to do, she began reading books from the Porfiriato era. She found fragments in them that talked about the furniture the Spaniards brought to Mexico. Lourdes describes it as eclectic, a theme that we see in the furniture of Chapultepec Castle in Mexico City.

She tells us that the design of Hacienda Encantada and Vista Encantada — the latest property of México Grand Hotels — is characterized by the style of a Mexican hacienda of the Porfirian era. The Tuscan design is stylized and elegant and the materials, lighting and furniture represent the beauty of Mexican culture.

En Hacienda Encantada utilizó una gama de colores cálidos, que varían entre los terracota, rojos, amarillos y verdes; mientras que, en Vista Encantada, hay gamas frías y cálidas, dependiendo de la suite en la que estés hospedado.

Lourdes considera que todos los colores en diseño son significativos. Ella misma busca cada estilo, le gusta recorrer Tlaquepaque, Tonalá, Chapala, Oaxaca y Taxco para encontrar directamente a los artesanos y que sus ideas estén plasmadas en el producto terminado.

Hacienda Encantada features a range of warm colors, varying between terracotta, red, yellow and green. Vista Encantada contains cool and warm ranges, depending on the suite. Lourdes believes that all colors are significant.

She looks for the same style and color culture when she travels through Tlaquepaque, Tonala, Chapala, Oaxaca and Taxco. Her goal is to find artisans and work directly with them so that her ideas come through in the finished product.

Es difícil para Lourdes decir cuáles son sus áreas favoritas en los hoteles, ya que todos los espacios están pensados para ser especiales, a pesar de ello, nos nombra algunos. La diseñadora de Aguascalientes nos cuenta que el lobby de Vista Encantada resalta por sus hermosas vistas y detalles, los muebles de estilo toscano, su majestuosa chimenea labrada en cantera, y la barra con diseño de antaño que nos recuerda a una cantina antigua. Quizás su lugar favorito actual es la capilla donde nos conocimos y realizamos la entrevista. La subida al lugar sagrado tiene una vista espectacular del Mar de Cortés que quita el aliento y hace suspirar. Sientes que no estás solo, que estás acompañado.

Al terminar la entrevista, descubrimos un pequeño brillo en los ojos de Lourdes, tal vez, por la emoción de hacer un recuento sobre los 26 años que tiene colaborando en México Grand Hotels.

It is difficult for Lourdes to pick out her favorite areas in the two hotels, since every space is designed to be special. But if she had to name one, the designer from Aguascalientes tells us that the Vista Encantada lobby stands out for its beautiful views and details, such as the Tuscan-style furniture. t is a place of creativity par excellence for both the national and international world, and for such diverse reasons. A large majority of those who settle in Los Cabos have a sense of responsibility and respect. We know there are deficiencies just as there are elsewhere. However, we do not focus on anything other than getting better. It is very true that we are not just waiting for the government to bring changes and improvements to this tourist destination. Our community well knows what must be done and does so. With the support of the authorities, we can create and invent better ways of living together and overcoming our challenges. It is a just matter of finding solutions and making them happen.

No voy a entrar en detalles, pero gracias a la comunidad internacional que habita en Los Cabos surgen diversas fundaciones no lucrativas de ayuda para la salud, educación, medio ambiente, protección de los animales, entre otras. Asimismo, los mexicanos hemos aprendido a participar en estas instituciones altruistas, en su asesoría y dirección también.

Esto anterior me lleva a pensar en la frase de John F. Kennedy “No preguntes que puede hacer tu país por ti, sino que puedes hacer tú para tu país”. Con eso se dice todo. No solamente es responsabilidad del gobierno hacer de un destino un lugar de evolución en sentido positivo, los gobernados podemos lograr grandes acciones. Al viajar por otros lugares te das cuenta de que las necesidades de una comunidad son las mismas. Las instituciones internacionales tratan de hacer presencia en todo el mundo, en programas como: cuidado de los océanos, de nutrición y de educación, buscan dar solución a un sinfín de necesidades.

I will not go into the details, but thanks to the international community that lives in Los Cabos, various non-profit foundations for health, education, environment, animal protection, and others have emerged. Likewise, we Mexicans have learned to participate in these altruistic institutions, and in their advice and direction as well.

This reminds me of the phrase from John F. Kennedy, “Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.” That says it all. Not only is it the responsibility of a government to make a destination a place of evolution in a positive sense, the governed must also act. When traveling in other places, you realize that the needs of a community are the same. International institutions work to establish a presence throughout the world. For example, they take care of the oceans, develop nutrition programs, improve education; they seek to meet a myriad of needs. There is no need to discover a magic bullet, but to put into practice everything that works in other places. Likewise, Los Cabos gives us the opportunity to be pioneers of new ideas that can work in our community. No hay necesidad de descubrir el hilo negro, sino de poner en práctica todo aquello que funciona en otros lugares. Asimismo, Los Cabos nos da la oportunidad de ser pioneros de nuevas ideas que puedan funcionar en la comunidad. Lo único que no sería válido es la apatía para contribuir en alguna mejora, ya sea con tiempo, dinero o ideas. La posibilidad de que en Los Cabos no puedas materializar un proyecto que contribuya a la sociedad es casi nula. El liderazgo en este destino es simplemente cuestión de decisión. No queremos permanecer inactivos y que el tiempo nos rezague. Queremos actuar y evitar errores de otros lugares siendo ejemplo para otras poblaciones.

Nuestro territorio no tiene límites en la creatividad. Su único límite es el mar y ello no nos separa del resto del mundo, sino que nos une como la misma fuerza de gravedad.

Por lo que a mí me corresponde hablar, y “sí”, con ánimo de continuar creando conciencia, es sobre la campaña donde se integraron 10 instituciones de la iniciativa privada el año 2018. El objetivo: no distraerse al conducir un auto.

The idea that you cannot create a project that contributes to society in Los Cabos is almost ridiculous. Leadership in this destination is simply a matter of decision. We do not want to remain inactive and let time pass us by. We want to act and avoid mistakes from other places, setting an example for other populations in the world. Our territory has no limits on creativity. The only limit is the sea, and this does not separate us from the rest of the world but unites us with the same force of gravity.

As far as I am concerned, I agree with and support continuing the campaign to raise awareness of the 10 private initiatives begun in 2018. Of importance is not being distracted when driving a car.

# CARRETERA TRANSPENINSULAR SIN CELULAR Aumentar la previsión en los colegios, desde kindergarten hasta preparatoria, sobre el valor y respeto a la vida cuando se conduce un auto en la carretera transpeninsular que todos circulamos a diario.

Raises awareness in schools, from kindergarten to high school, about the value and respect for life when driving a car on the transpeninsular road that we all use daily.

Iniciando con actividades de recaudación, se hizo un video sobre el tema, se imprimieron cerca de 7,000 hologramas con el logotipo de la campaña, se dieron pláticas y conferencias de prensa, y finalmente se obtuvo permiso del Gobierno Federal para colocar 20 señales de tránsito entre las poblaciones de San José del Cabo y Cabo San Lucas en donde se prohíbe el uso del teléfono celular al conducir con la única intención de salvaguardar la seguridad en el camino.

Conozco y he participado en varias fundaciones nuevas para impulsar la mejora del destino, tanto proyecto de educación, ecología y salud. Gracias a estos líderes de la iniciativa privada que invitan a la población a participar con entusiasmo harán que Los Cabos siga creciendo en el camino correcto.

Even though there was no initial enforcement of penalties for talking on cell phones while driving, conscientious children became the parents' traffic cops. Personajes pintorescos hay en todos los lugares, Todos Santos no es la excepción. Hace años el inconfundible Minachi era reconocido por todos los habitantes. Todas las mañanas recorría las casas mendigando un poco de comida, la cual depositaba en una lata, recibía de todo: frijoles, sopa, carne, pescado. Una mezcla que después en su refugio comía. Algunas personas le entregaban monedas que guardaba en bolsitas de manta y luego enterraba. Su aspecto sucio, tanto en su ropa como en su cuerpo, obligaba a los policías a bañarlo por lo menos cada 15 días. Lo cubrían con ropas donadas por los pobladores. En sus recorridos matutinos murmuraba unas frases en inglés, como para mantener comunicación con un mundo que lo tenía marginado. I gn a c io Do m ín g ue z Fal c ó n era su nombre, hijo de Rodolfo Domínguez Montoy, originario de El Triunfo, quien por trabajo cambió su residencia. Ignacio formó parte de un grupo de bailarines que actuaron en películas musicales. Como sucede con los muchachos latinos de buena presencia tuvo varios amores, entre ellos una mujer a la cual se entregó con el ímpetu de su juventud. De pronto, sin dar explicación regresó a Todos Santos donde se dedicó a gozar de la vida, vestido todo de blanco no faltaba a las fiestas para exhibir sus dotes de bailarín. Llegó a ser todo un personaje en la zona. La vida transcurría sin tropiezos para Ignacio. De pronto, de un día para otro, perdió la razón sin que nadie supiera la causa. Dicen que recibió una carta del amor, que al abrirla sus polvos se esparcieron y fueron inhalados por Minachi. Otros suponen que tomó una sobredosis de enervantes y le afectó el sistema nervioso. Minachi hacía sus recorridos por la mañana y por la tarde nadie lo volvía a ver. Por eso, cuando apareció envuelto en una cobija a mediodía caminando con dificultad la gente temió que algo estuviera mal. En efecto estaba cansado. Murió el 24 de diciembre en plena nochebuena. El sacerdote que le dio los santos óleos opinó: “El Nachito escogió esta fecha para morirse para que nos acordáramos de él”.

Don Modesto was a pioneer of reinforced concrete and participated in magnificent buildings such as the Bullring of Mexico City. His life is an inspiration and example of tenacity, perseverance and passion.

Biografía del Autor: Jorge Modesto Rolland Constantine

nació el 16 de diciembre de 1939. Es Ingeniero Civil por la UNAM, políglota, articulista y empresario. En la administración pública estuvo a cargo de la dirección de Catastro del Estado de Querétaro, así como de La Dirección de Ingeniería y Construcción de la Nueva Capital de Tanzania con Naciones Unidas, SAHOP y gobierno tanzano. También fungió como secretario técnico CICQ, y presidente del VI Consejo de la CMIC, Qro., y del Club de Industriales de Qro.

Author Biography: Jorge Modesto Rolland Constantine was born on December 16, 1939. He is a Civil Engineer from UNAM, multilinguist, columnist and businessman. In public administration, he oversaw the Cadastre Directorate of the State of Querétaro, as well as the Engineering and Construction Directorate of the New Capital of Tanzania with the United Nations, SAHOP and the Tanzanian government. He also served as technical secretary of CICQ, and president of the VI Council of the CMIC, Qro, the Industrial Club of Qro and Construction Director of the Banamex project in Juriquilla, Qro.

Fue director, gerente y residente en varias empresas constructoras, en campos como: obras de riego, caminos, edificaciones residenciales y comerciales, naves industriales y vivienda, además de técnico en la producción de cemento; Director de Construcción del Proyecto Banamex en Juriquilla, Qro. y, desde hace 30 años, director general de la Constructora e Inmobiliaria Tlachco donde ha realizado numerosas obras de carreteras, urbanización, naves industriales y casas, principalmente, en el Estado de Querétaro.

Se realizó un estudio detallado antes de construir los siete jacales para definir los espacios en El Perdido. De esta manera, se aprovechan mejor las ventajas de las corrientes de aire y la posición del sol durante el transcurso del día. A detailed study was conducted before building each of the seven jacales, as well as the rest of El Perdido. few days after their wedding on July 31st, the newlyweds flew to La Paz in a little Cessna. My father never considered the consequences of taking a glamourous star, accustomed to the opulence of Beverly Hills, to a tiny hotel in the tropics in August when the oppressive heat was at its worst. But as my father described, my mother’s composure staying at La Perla Hotel while Las Cruces was under construction, was remarkable. While voicing his concerns about her happiness, she told him that geography didn’t matter, that with him she would be happy anywhere.

Building a resort 70 years ago required importing most of the building materials from mainland Mexico or the United States. Experienced and qualified workers were almost nonexistent. The resort had to include wells, water distribution systems, a power plant and transmission lines, a three-thousand-foot airstrip, a marina and a dock. My father was the architect, landscaper, decorator, foreman and pilot.

None of this would have been possible without my father’s clear vision, endless energy, hard work and the ever-present love and support of my mother. Her attention to every detail to please the guests never went unnoticed and her mild manners, gentle demeanor, grace and transcendent beauty captivated all who visited Las Cruces and helped it evolve into a charming, luxurious resort catering to celebrities and dignitaries.

ucille Bremer, aclamada actriz y bailarina de Hollywood, conoció a Abelardo L. Rodríguez Montijo, hijo de un presidente de México, en 1947 mientras filmaba "Aventuras de Casanova" en la Ciudad de México. Aunque los otros actores pueden no haberse beneficiado profesional o personalmente, la realización de la película tuvo un impacto de largo alcance en el destino de la joven estrella como lo describe en sus recuerdos: Mi vida tomó un rumbo muy alejado del que perseguía, por extraño que parezca, me acercó a la vida que había imaginado de niña. Cuando tenía 12 años, tuve una visión breve pero clara de una escena en mi futuro. Me vi volando en un avión pequeño a un país extraño para mí, uno que se convertiría en mi hogar.

Mientras se filmaba la película conocí a Abelardo, un año después, me casé con él. Y me llevó a Baja California Sur y allí viví durante muchos años. ucille Bremer, acclaimed Hollywood actress and dancer, met Abelardo L. Rodriguez Montijo, son of a President of Mexico, in 1947 while filming “Adventures of Casanova” in Mexico City. Although the other actors may not have benefited professionally or personally, the making of the movie did have a far-reaching impact on the young star’s destiny as she describes in her memories: My life took a direction far afield from the one I had been pursuing. Strangely enough, it was exactly what I had envisioned as a young girl. When I was 12, I had a brief but clear view of a scene in my future. I saw myself being flown in a small plane to a country foreign to me, one that was to become my home.

While making Casanova, I met, and a year later, married the man who would fly me to Baja California, where I lived for many years. I was introduced to Abelardo L. Rodriguez Montijo by the owner of the Reforma Hotel who warned me that Lalo, as he was called in Mexico, was a playboy and inferred that he was very rich and naughty.

By naughty, I guess Mr. Benny meant he was very popular with the ladies. That was certainly true. And he did enjoy playing almost everything including bridge, chess, Chinese checkers, even tiddlywinks, if that was the only game in town. He was an excellent pilot, still holding the prop plane record from Mexico City to Los Angeles. He was also a fine athlete. He broke the high jump record in high school and was given an athletic scholarship to UCLA. However, track practice cut into his social life and he transferred to Pomona. For some reason, he left school. He knew he had to give his father a good reason for quitting and as he was driving toward his father’s house, he passed a small airport. Airplanes!

Father, I have an overwhelming passion for aviation —he told him. Well then, you had better learn to fly —said the General. So, he did. The man who taught him said he had the greatest natural ability he had ever seen. When Rod was 19, he had his own flight school and a contract to make pilots out of English boys, some of whom had never even driven an automobile. The Royal Air Force ferried bombers to Britain. He joined them. He was a test pilot for North American Aviation. So, although he looked the part of the playboy, he really worked very hard, but not nearly as hard as he would later in Baja California. La Paz is the capital of Baja California Sur, as most everyone now knows. However, in 1948 that fact was known to the 10,000 inhabitants and not many others. Even the neighbor to the north, California, seemed to think that Baja California stopped shortly beyond Ensenada. People in Mexico City knew there was a territory owned by Mexico somewhere to the northwest but what it was, they had no idea. La Paz, so aptly named Peace, sat dozing in the Baja California sun as the rest of the world shouted, threatened, starved and killed their enemies.

About 25 miles east of La Paz is where we planned to build our house. Las Cruces was the name of the ranch and also the point of land were three crosses stood on a rocky cliff above the sea. It is believed that Cortez’s men, in search of black pearls for which this area would, a few hundred years later, become famous, landed and were killed by inhospitable natives. The crosses have been erected in commemoration of the dead Spaniards. The ranch covered an area of several thousand acres, 40 or so had been beautifully laid out with long avenues in between them a host of lovely trees: mangos, coconut palms, date palms, citrus and many others. The mountains rose in the West and to the East the Sea of Cortez, 13 miles of coast bordered the front of the ranch. Much has been written about the coast of California and many have described the color but to say that the golf is a glorious blue tells only the tiniest thing about it. It is sometimes so calm, so tranquil, one would think it a quiet lake. When the breeze is gentle and the surface of the water ripples slightly, it is as though the sun were being reflected to heaven by billions of tiny mirrors, and as far as one can see, there’s blue. The color is so deep and rich it could be duplicated only by its creator. That is how it was the first time I saw it. For me, Las Cruces was an enchanted land. The breeze was cool, the coarse white sand hot, the water warm and caressing. We had masks and spent hours in a little cove watching the silent world beneath the surface of the water. We swam in a society of elegant little creatures and the living jewels welcomed us. One group dressed in midnight blue with royal blue sequins nibbled at my ring. Some gold and silver fish were delighted with the nail polish on my toes. Lest you think I was in danger of being eaten alive, let me hasten to say the fish were only three or four inches long with mouths to match their tiny size.

After choosing the sites for the main house, pool and guest house, we flew back to La Paz as twilight descended on the town. We decided to start with the guest house and pool and stay in town until the small house was finished.

uando hablamos de Los Comondú nos referimos a dos pequeños pueblos ubicados en un oasis de gran belleza, ubicado a 340 km al noroeste de La Paz, cuyos nombres son San José de Comondú y San Miguel de Comondú. Los pueblos se asientan al pie de la Sierra de la Giganta, misma que se aprecia en todo su esplendor desde Loreto en la vertiente que mira hacia el Océano Pacífico. Se originaron alrededor de una de las primeras misiones Jesuitas que hubo en las Californias, a principios del siglo XVIII, la Misión de San José de Comondú, parte de la cual aún se puede apreciar cuando uno visita el pueblo que lleva ese nombre.

hen we refer to Los Comondu we are actually talking about two small villages located in an oasis of great beauty about 210 miles northwest of La Paz. Their names are San José de Comondu and San Miguel de Comondu. The villages are nestled at the foot of the Sierra de la Giganta whose slopes facing the Pacific Ocean can be seen in all their splendor from Loreto. The villages were built at the beginning of the 18th century around one of the first Jesuit missions in the Californias, the Mission of San Jose de Comondu. Part of the mission can still be appreciated when one visits the town bearing that name.

A visit to Los Comondu is a unique experience in a green valley that winds through the desert of the central area of Baja California Sur. In addition to the landscape, travelers visiting Los Comondu are immersed in a population that will make them feel as if they have gone back in time to Antigua California. The area was virtually unconquerable until the missionaries arrived to colonize the peninsula with a message of peace. Around the missions were a distinct type of people, isolated, discreet and humble. They were also people whose existence was based on hard work and a disciplined and austere life. It was they who forged the foundations of the Sudcalifornian society. En estos pueblos las casas, las calles y las costumbres han sufrido pocos cambios en los últimos 150 años, desde que Comondú, hoy San Miguel de Comondú, fue la cabecera del enorme Municipio que lleva ese nombre. In these towns, the houses, streets and customs have undergone few changes in the 150 years since Comondu, today San Miguel de Comondu, was the head of the enormous Municipality that bears that name. That is why it is inevitable to feel a kind of time travel towards a past of tranquility and harmony with the special nature of the valley, and to enjoy the silence of the nights and a vaulted night sky full of stars hardly visible in other inhabited places.

Otro aspecto extraordinario de estos pueblos es que casi la totalidad de sus habitantes descienden de familias que han habitado la península californiana desde hace cinco o más generaciones. Familias de Californios según el concepto de Harry W. Crosby, autor del libro ¨Los últimos Californios¨, que mantienen casi intactas costumbres de tiempos idos, muy difíciles de encontrar, salvo en antiguos ranchos y en pequeños pueblos aislados, costumbres de gente noble y poco hecha a los modos y costumbres de las ciudades, que tienen que ver con el ritmo de vida, la comida, y las formas de platicar o de saludar, entre otras cosas.

En estos pueblos prácticamente todos los alimentos que se consumen tienen mérito artesanal, y están elaborados con ingredientes de alta calidad, orgánicos, aunque no poseen tal certificación, pues ahí nadie pretende el uso comercial de esta etiqueta.

Another extraordinary aspect of these towns is that almost all of the residents are descendants of families that have inhabited the Californian peninsula for five or more generations. According to Harry W. Crosby, author of the book "The Last Californios," they are Californians that keep the customs of times gone by almost intact. The families are very difficult to find, except in old ranches and in small isolated villages. They practice the customs of noble people and bear little resemblance to the ways and customs of cities, which means they have a different rhythm of life, food, and ways of talking and even saying hello.

Practically all the food consumed in these villages has artisanal merit. The dishes are made with high quality, organic ingredients. However, they are not certified as such because no one intends them for commercial purposes.

Para llegar a Comondú desde La Paz, es necesario viajar por la carretera federal número 1, “la transpeninsular”, hacia el norte, cruzar Ciudad Constitución, en el corazón del Valle de Santo Domingo, y al llegar a Ciudad Insurgentes continuar en línea recta. Al continuar en línea recta por unos 60 km aproximadamente, cruzaremos otra población llamada Ignacio Zaragoza y después llegaremos a un asentamiento llamado Ejido Francisco Villa, donde nos desviaremos hacia la derecha, apuntando a la Sierra de la Giganta que ya se percibe desde ese punto. Veinte minutos más tarde entraremos a la cañada de Los Comondú, donde se empieza a encontrar la presencia de un cristalino arroyo que viene corriendo desde tres ojos de agua que se hayan a 15 km de distancia. Un rato después entraremos a San Miguel de Comondú, y 4 km más adelante está San José de Comondú. Existe señalamiento bien diseñado y distribuido por todo el camino, por lo que es fácil encontrarlo.

Quien viaje a este destino puede alojarse cómodamente en un hotel llamado “Hacienda de Don Mario”, que está en funcionamiento desde hace 6 o 7 años. To get to Comondu from La Paz, it is necessary to travel north on federal highway number 1, “the transpeninsular.” Go through Ciudad Constitucion, in the heart of the Santo Domingo Valley, and continue ahead through Ciudad Insurgentes. Continue straight for approximately 37 miles. You will pass through another town called Ignacio Zaragoza and then arrive at a settlement called Ejido Francisco Villa. Turn right and head towards the Sierra de la Giganta that are already visible. Twenty minutes later you will enter the Glen of the Comondu, where you will find a crystal-clear stream that comes running from three springs of water that are less than 10 miles away. Keep going and you will enter San Miguel de Comondu. A couple miles further is San José de Comondu. Signs are distributed all the way, so each village is easy to find.

Travelers to this destination can stay in the hotel “Hacienda de Don Mario,” which has been in operation for six or seven years. Desde este bello poblado se pueden visitar zonas impresionantes de arte rupestre en la Sierra de San Francisco: Palmarito, San Francisquito, por mencionar dos divinos lugares donde en contacto con la naturaleza y las expresiones culturales pasadas y presentes se aviva el alma. De San Ignacio sigue el camino hacia la capital del Municipio, la encantadora Santa Rosalía. El pasado de la población minera se ha conservado, con retoques de la mano de las compañías francesas y familias que fueron los impulsores de esta región. Visita la iglesia de Santa Bárbara que se caracteriza por su arquitectura francesa y se construyó con materiales traídos en un buque. Santa Rosalía es la primera población de visita sobre el Mar de Cortés o Golfo de California. El último poblado es precisamente Mulegé. Este pintoresco pueblo al igual que San Ignacio posee una esplendorosa iglesia jesuita y un oasis impresionante. El rio Mulegé -como se le conoce- le da vida a la población, donde se han construido cabañas y tráiler park. La cosecha del dátil y los dulces derivados permiten a los lugareños ofrecer distintos aperitivos. Por otro lado, el arte rupestre en sus cercanías es un agregado más al atractivo de la región, la impresionante Sierra de Guadalupe con la cueva de San Borjita, las pinturas de la Sierra de la Trinidad y los petrograbados de piedras pintas.

After Mulege, along the royal road that today is the transpeninsular highway, you reach the ancient capital of the Californias, the gentle town of Loreto. The community is a tourist destination. Part of the magic is walking along the boardwalk and letting yourself be enchanted by the local cuisine. Don’t miss the missionary building and, of course, the church that today are part of the Jesuit Mission Museum. It is important to note that the Jesuit evangelization began in Loreto, a historically fascinating town founded in 1697. The museum contains tools and homemade utensils used during the 17th century. Visit the nearby islands and you can understand why Loreto was chosen as the place to start such important work. After more than 300 years since its founding, the inhabitants of Loreto continue to jealously preserve the town’s extraordinary natural beauty and history. About an hour and a half from Loreto is Ciudad Constitucion, capital of the Municipality. It is an admirable agricultural town for the way in which the inhabitants use deep wells to grow crops in a basically desert territory. If you are interested in agriculture and livestock, you’ll want to visit the ranches and communal farms scattered throughout this unique region.

De esta manera, se pretende representar al océano como “una entidad a la que se debe respetar y cuidar, para que pueda continuar su vital función en el planeta”. El 11 de noviembre 2019 se llevó a cabo el lanzamiento internacional de AMA Fundation en Nicksan Palmilla. AMA busca mejorar, proteger y salvar los océanos y sus condiciones, al mismo tiempo que enriquecen el ambiente ecológico en Baja California Sur. Sonia Falcone funda y preside AMA Foundation, con el respaldo de un comprometido comité constituido por la reconocida diseñadora, Tamara Ralph, la súper modelo Christina Estrada, así como por su alteza real el Príncipe Charles Philippe de Orleans y por la Princesa Diana de Orleans, duques de Anjou y Cadaval. En este bello hotel icónico se dieron cita personalidades de la sociedad de Los Cabos, la ocasión lo ameritaba, este destino es reconocido por su permanente labor altruista y de apoyo a la comunidad. Así, “Jewels of the Sea” ha sido el inicio de un extenso programa de conservación dirigido por Sonia Falcone al cual se están sumando empresas y líderes locales. Durante la velada presentaciones sorpresa incluyeron la aparición del cantante y actor boliviano Milton Cortez. Los patrocinadores incluyeron al restaurante Nicksan, Daniel Espinosa y Gregorio Sánchez. La banda militar de México, War Band, dio un espectacular comienzo a la noche antes de que Chad Corvey liderara una deslumbrante subasta en vivo. Además, asistieron representantes de todas las fundaciones relacionadas a la conservación marina apoyados por AMA y se recaudó una buena suma para iniciar los propósitos para este año.

The first gala dinner organized by the AMA Foundation was held last November 15 at Las Ventanas al Paraiso, a Rosewood Resort. The beautiful, iconic hotel gathered personalities from the Los Cabos society. The occasion merited the lovely venue.
