November, month of wines in Tenerife NOVEMBER, MONAT DES WEINS AUF TENERIFFA NOVIEMBRE, MES DE VINOS EN TENERIFE
Tenerife wines are the indisputable stars of the month in November. 29th November, St. Andrew’s Day, marks the traditional opening of the wineries on the island. In towns like Icod de los Vinos, youths hurtle down the steep streets on boards. In Puerto de la Cruz, the festivity is called ‘Fiesta del Cacharro y la Castaña’. On this day, townspeople drag pots and pans and other old objects along the streets to attract the attention of passersby and to liven up a street party which ends with roasted chestnuts and trying all sorts of other local products such as kneaded ‘gofio’, wreckfish, sweet potatoes and, of course, wine, which is also worth trying in any restaurant of the island. Die Weine von Teneriffa stehen im November unbestrittenen im Mittelpunkt des Monats. November feiert man allerorts den Sankt-Andreas mit der traditionellen Öffnung der Weinkeller. In Städten wie Icod de los Vinos stürzen sich die jungen Leute auf Brettern die steilen Straßen hinab und in Puerto de la Cruz feiern die Einwohner das Fest der Blechtöpfe und Kastanien, bei dem die Kinder allerlei Blechutensilien und alte Gegenstände an Schnüren durch die Straßen ziehen, um die Aufmerksamkeit der Passanten zu erregen und die Feier zu beleben. Zum Abschluss gibt es altem Brauch gemäß geröstete Kastanien, sowie Gelegenheit, alle Arten von Produkten der Inselküche, wie geknetetes Gofio-Brot, Riesenzackenbarsch, Süßkartoffeln und natürlich den Wein der Insel zu probieren, der es gerade in diesem Monat wert ist, auch in einem jeden Restaurant Teneriffas gekostet zu werden.
Los vinos de Tenerife son los protagonistas indiscutibles del mes de noviembre. El 29 de noviembre, Día de San Andrés, coincide con la tradicional apertura de las bodegas tinerfeñas. En pueblos como Icod de los Vinos los jóvenes se lanzan sobre tablas por las empinadas calles de la localidad. En Puerto de la Cruz, la celebración toma el nombre de la Fiesta del Cacharro y la Castaña, en la que los vecinos arrastran cacharros y diversos objetos viejos por las calles para llamar la atención de los viandantes y animar una fiesta que concluye con la castañada, en la que además de las típicas castañas los asistentes pueden probar toda clase de productos de la gastronomía isleña como el gofio amasado, el cherne, las batatas y, por supuesto, el vino, que igualmente merece ser degustado en cualquier restaurante de la Isla.

LORO PARQUE helps to finance a project which pursues the survival of this species. In order to see and get to know these beautiful animals, LORO PARQUE has opened its Lion‘s Kingdom. It is an impressive compound recreating their natural habitat, hosting a young lion and two lionesses of the Angola subspecies. These three specimens were looking for a home and they found it under the sunshine of Tenerife and the shadow of Mount Teide. The Loro Parque Foundation co-operates in the KAZA project for the protection of the African lion in a transnational conservation area which spans Angola, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe. In this way, LORO PARQUE endorses its commitment with nature and threatened species. This is a fantastic time to visit LORO PARQUE and to spend the day with the family observing these formidable animals which start a happy new life in the best zoo in Europe and second in the world.

Die Stiftung Loro Parque arbeitet an dem Projekt KAZA zum Schutz des afrikanischen Löwen in einem grenzüberschreitenden Schutzgebiet mit, das Angola, Botswana, Namibia, Sambia und Simbabwe umfasst. Hiermit will LORO PARQUE sein Engagement für die Natur und vom Aussterben bedrohte Arten verstärken. Es ist eine großartige Zeit, den LORO PARQUE zu besuchen und einen herrlichen Tag mit der Familie zu verbringen, um diese eindrucksvollen Tiere zu beobachten, die im besten Zoo Europas und zweitbesten der Welt ein neues glückliches Leben beginnen.

SYLVIA MADEARO One of the emblems of the capital of Tenerife is the García Sanabria Park, featuring numerous plant species, romantic walks, fountains and splendid sculptures – a unique sensorial experience. With an area of over 65,000 m2 and refurbished in 2006, the green lung of Santa Cruz is a meeting point for the locals. Don’t miss its emblematic flower clock or the Monument to García Sanabria in the centre of the park, and take time to meander amidst the lush vegetation to find its magical recesses. Stop for some refreshment in the cafeteria beside the flower clock or in Strasse Park, the restaurant on the upper part of the gardens with excellent views of La Rambla. If you enjoy jogging, La Granja is one of the most popular parks for local sports enthusiasts, who make the most of over 64,000 m2 for some exercise. Enjoy the sight of its beautiful palm trees, dragon trees and exotic plants such as the ombú or black walnut tree, and if you want to take a break, there are areas with tables and chairs for a quick picnic. There is also a playground so that the kids can have fun. And approaching Santa Cruz, we come across the Palmetum, a 12 hectare botanic garden created on a former tip which was closed in 1983. It is an example of transformation and sustainability, featuring the best collection of palm trees in Europe and more than 2,000 tropical and subtropical species - a veritable botanic garden in the city. A recommendation: if you want to enjoy one of the best views of the city, walk to the lookout point, you won’t regret it.

Besichtigen Sie unbedingt seine emblematische Blumenuhr und das Denkmal für García Sanabria im Zentrum des Parks. Gönnen Sie sich auch das Vergnügen, sich in der dichten Vegetation zu verlieren, um die magischen, versteckten Winkel des Parks zu entdecken. Zum Entspannen empfehlen wir einen Snack in dem Café neben der Blumenuhr oder das Restaurant Strasse-Park am oberen Parkende, von dem aus man einen herrlichen Blick auf die Allee La Rambla genießt. Wenn Sie gerne joggen, dann sollten Sie den Park La Granja aufsuchen, der bei den Läufern der Hauptstadt sehr beliebt ist und in dem Sie mehr als 64.000 m2 Platz haben, um Ihrem Hobby nachzugehen. Werfen Sie einen Blick auf seine schönen Palmen, die Drachenbäume und exotische Arten wie den Ombubaum oder den amerikanischen Schwarznussbaum. Zum Ausruhen und Entspannen gibt es Bereiche mit Tischen und Bänken, wo Sie sogar gern ein spontanes Picknick einlegen können. Auch ein hübscher Spielplatz ist vorhanden, damit auch die Kleinsten ihren Spaß haben. An der Zufahrt nach Santa Cruz liegt El Palmetum – ein Palmengarten von 12 ha Größe, der auf einer alten, im Jahr 1983 geschlossenen Müllhalde angelegt wurde. Als gutes Beispiel für moderne Stadtgestaltung und Nachhaltigkeit besitzt er mit mehr als 2000 tropischen und subtropischen Arten die beste Palmensammlung ganz Europas - ein wahrer botanischer Garten mitten in der Stadt. Ein Tipp: Wenn Sie die beste Aussicht auf die Stadt genießen wollen, dann suchen Sie den Aussichtsplatz des Parks auf. Sie werden es nicht bereuen.
Uno de los emblemas de la capital tinerfeña es el parque García Sanabria, donde conviven numerosas especies vegetales, románticos paseos, fuentes y hermosas esculturas que componen una experiencia sensorial única. Con más de 65.000 m2 y rehabilitado en 2006, el pulmón de Santa Cruz es punto de encuentro de los capitalinos. No se pierda su emblemático reloj de flores y el Monumento a García Sanabria en el centro del parque y regálese el placer de perderse entre su tupida vegetación para encontrar los mágicos rincones que oculta. Para descansar, tomar un refrigerio en la cafetería junto al reloj de flores o en Strasse Park, restaurante de la parte alta del parque con excelentes vistas a la Rambla. Si es amante del running, el parque de la Granja es uno de los lugares más frecuentados por los deportistas de la capital, quienes aprovechan sus más de 64.000 m2 de extensión para correr. Disfrute contemplando sus bellas palmeras, dragos y especies exóticas como el ombú o el nogal americano y si desea descansar, existen zonas con mesas y sillas habilitadas para un improvisado picnic. También cuenta con zona infantil para que los más pequeños se diviertan. Y en la entrada de Santa Cruz se encuentra el Palmetum, jardín botánico de 12 hectáreas erigido sobre un antiguo vertedero cerrado en 1983. Ejemplo de transformación y sostenibilidad, cuenta con la mejor colección de palmeras de Europa y más de 2000 especies tropicales y subtropicales, constituyendo un verdadero jardín botánico en la ciudad. Un consejo, si quiere disfrutar de las mejores vistas de la ciudad, acérquese a su mirador, no se arrepentirá.

La Laguna full of mystery Calle San Agustín, for many the most beautiful street of the city, conveys us to another century. Behind us, we leave many mansions with their façades still intact and in excellent state of repair, which were once owned by the foremost families of La Laguna. The locals are full of legends about these mansions, especially the one which now hosts the History and Anthropology Museum of Tenerife (Calle San Agustín 22). This is where the important Lercaro family lived in the 16th century. The legend goes that Catalina Lercaro committed suicide after being forced to marry a man she did not love. Many claim to have felt her presence during visits to the museum, and more than one employee has had to leave on account of strange presences... This is, undoubtedly, the most famous ghost of La Laguna. For breakfast: Cafetería Venezia (Plaza de la Concepción, 2). For lunch: La Tasca de Cristian (Calle Marqués de Celada, 17). For dinner: La Bourmet (Calle San Agustín, 42).

Geheimnisvolles La Laguna Die Straße Calle San Agustin gilt für viele als die schönste der Stadt. Sie führt uns in ein längst vergangenes Jahrhundert. Wir gehen an vielen altherrschaftlichen Häusern und Palästen entlang, die sich ihre originale Fassade bis auf den heutigen Tag erhalten haben und sehr gut renoviert wurden. Einst gehörten sie den Adelsfamilien La Lagunas und um viele von ihnen ranken sich alte Legenden - vor allem um das Haus, in dem sich heute das Museum für Geschichte und Anthropologie von Teneriffa (Calle San Agustin 22) befindet. In ihm lebte im sechzehnten Jahrhundert die angesehene Familie Lercaro und den Erzählungen nach soll sich die Tochter der Familie, Catalina Lercaro, in dem Haus selbst getötet haben, nachdem sie gezwungen worden war, einen Mann zu ehelichen, den sie nicht liebte. Es gibt zahlreiche Berichte von Besuchern des Museums, die beschwören, ihre Anwesenheit gefühlt zu haben und der eine oder andere Angestellte hat seine Arbeit angesichts seltsamer Präsenzen verlassen... Es ist zweifellos der berühmteste Geist La Lagunas Zum Frühstück: Café Venezia (Plaza de la Concepción, 2); zum Mittagessen: La Tasca Cristian (Calle Marques de Celada, 17), zum Abendessen: La Bourmet (Calle San Agustin, 42).
La Laguna misteriosa La calle San Agustín, para muchos la más bella de la ciudad, nos transporta a otro siglo. Dejaremos atrás numerosos palacetes que permanecen con la fachada intacta y muy bien cuidada y que eran propiedad de las grandes familias laguneras. Numerosas leyendas conservan los laguneros sobre muchos de estos palacetes y en especial sobre el que en la actualidad acoge el Museo de Historia y Antropología de Tenerife (calle San Agustín 22). Allí, en el siglo XVI vivía la prestigiosa familia Lercaro. Dice la leyenda que Catalina Lercaro se suicidó en la casa tras ser obligada a casarse con un hombre al que no amaba. Son numerosos los relatos que afirman haber sentido su presencia durante visitas al museo, y algún empleado de la casa ha tenido que irse por presencias extrañas… Es sin duda el fantasma más célebre de La Laguna. Playa de la Arena, in Santiago del Teide, is one of the embryos of tourist development on Tenerife. Once a charming fishing village, Puerto Santiago - and Los Gigantes, the spectacular nearby cliffs - gradually developed as from the seventies. It became a holiday destination for residents and, with an increasing number of hotels and of higher standards, for foreign tourism. The highlight of this beach is its emblematic black sand. There are full services and many culinary options in the vicinity, as well as volcanic pools and coves as an alternative for swimming. Even if there is a need for care with the breaking waves on the shore, this beach would certainly be ranked among the ten best of the Island.
Playa de la Arena in Santiago del Teide war einer der ersten Urlaubsorte von Teneriffa. Die angrenzenden reizvollen Fischerdörfer Puerto Santiago und Los Gigantes mit den spektakulären Klippen verwandelten sich seit den 70er Jahren zunächst in Urlaubsorte für die Bewohner der Insel und dann zunehmend mir der Errichtung von mehr Hotels höherer Qualität zu einem Magneten des internationalen Tourismus. Die Bucht zeichnet sich durch ihren kleinen Strand schwarzen Sandes aus, bietet ein komplettes Dienstleistungsangebot, ein reiches gastronomisches Angebot in den umliegenden Restaurants, sowie eine Vielzahl von natürlichen Meerestümpeln und -armen, die von vulkanischen Lavaströmen gebildet wurden und Badealternativen darstellen. Obwohl man stets die Brandung am Ufer im Auge haben sollte, gehört der Ort zweifelsohne auf jede Liste der 10 besten Inselstrände.

Esta cala sobresale por su marcada arena negra, cuenta con unos completos servicios, una profusa oferta gastronómica alrededor, y charcos y brazos de mar de las coladas volcánicas como alternativas de baño. Aunque conviene atender al oleaje en la orilla, es un lugar imprescindible si se hiciera una lista de 10 de la Isla.

Arico, Land von Käse und Wein Arico, die flächenmäßig größte Gemeinde des Inselsüdens und nach Orotava zweitgrößte Teneriffas, ist ein Landstrich von Käse und Wein, oder wie die Einheimischen sagen: “Wer nach Arico kam und trank keinen Wein – warum ist er dann gekommen? Arico ist fürwahr einen Besuch wert wegen seiner Landschaft, der Kirche von Villa de Arico, dem uralten Weiler Icor - einem Juwel der traditionellen kanarischen Architektur – und der Weinkelterei Cumbres de Abona, in der einer der besten Malvasier der Kanaren gekeltert wird. Berühmt auch für seinen, bei mehreren internationalen Wettbewerben mit Goldmedaillen ausgezeichneten Ziegenkäse kann man in Arico in jedem der Lokale rund um das Rathaus hervorragend frühstücken, ein köstliches Mittagessen auf dem Weingut zu sich nehmen und zu Abend an der Küste speisen. Casa Manolo und Sal Negra und andere Restaurants befinden sich in dem Ort Tajao am Meer und bieten vorzügliche Speisekarten mit frischem Fisch aus den heimischen Gewässern. Oder, wenn Sie es vorziehen, stellt ein Besuch des Wasserparks Siam Park (nº1 von TripAdvisor) im Süden der Insel eine ausgezeichnete Wahl dar.

Arico, the most extensive borough of the south, and the second largest of the island after La Orotava, is a land of cheese and wine and, as the locals say: “Why come to Arico if it’s not to drink wine?” Arico is well worth a visit on account of its landscape, the church of the Villa de Arico, the old hamlet of Icor – a gem of traditional Canary architecture, and the Cumbres de Abona winery, producing one of the best malmsey wines of the Canaries. Famous for its goat cheeses, some of them awarded gold medals in international events, in Arico you can take breakfast in any of the bars near the Town Council, have lunch in the winery and have dinner on the coast. Casa Manolo, Sal Negra and other restaurants are found beside the sea, in Tajao, serving a tantalising array of local fish. Or, if you prefer, fun in Siam Park, the water park in the south (nº1 of the world acordding TripAdvisor), is a splendid option.

Im Herbst spiegelt der Wald die Natur wider und beginnt sich zu verändern. Eingeschläfert seit dem Sommer wacht er mit der Ankunft der Regenschauer in den verschiedensten Grüntönen auf. Das herbstliche Licht begleitet dieses Schauspiel und erfasst alle Winkel, jede Flechte und jeden Baumstamm mit einem besonderen Glanz, der die ohnehin herrlichen Farben des Parks noch stärker hervorhebt. Mit den ersten Regenfällen nehmen auch die Pilze an diesem atemberaubenden Schauspiel teil und brechen das charakteristische Grün des Garajonays mit ihrem bunten Farbenspiel.

In autumn, the woods echo Mother Nature and start to change. After the summer lethargy, they begin to awaken, bedecking the different shades of green with the arrival of rainfall. The autumn light accompanies this scene, giving each corner, each moss and each trunk a special lustre, enhancing the colours of the park even more. With the first rainfall, the mushrooms add to the spectacle with their different tones, breaking up the characteristic green colour of the Garajonay. The woodland scenery is never amiss of mists which appear and disappear on the scene in a dance led by the breeze, a witness to the predominating trade winds of the Islands.

This simple round route of just over 6 kilometres reveals one of the most beautiful sceneries of Tenerife: that made up by Mount Chinyero and its desolate badlands, a landscape created after the last eruption which took place in Tenerife, in 1909. We start the walk along the dirt track which begins a few metres after kilometre point 15 of TF-38, the road connecting Chío with Boca Tauce. We continue along the track and, after half a kilometre, take PR-TF 43, the signposted footpath which skirts the volcano. We continue all around Mount Chinyero, avoiding the diversion that descends towards La Montañeta, returning to the starting point.

Der einfache Rundweg von knapp über 6 Kilometern Länge ermöglicht es uns, einen der schönsten Orte der Insel Teneriffa zu entdecken: den Vulkan Chinyero und seine umliegenden Lavaströme - ein Landstrich, der sein heutiges Aussehen durch die letzte Eruption auf Teneriffa im Jahr 1909 erhielt. Wir beginnen die Wanderung auf dem Feldweg, der nur wenige Meter vom Kilometer 15 der Inselstraße TF-38 zwischen Chío und Boca Tauce entfernt liegt. Wir gehen den Feldweg einen halben Kilometer entlang, bis wir auf den ausgewiesenen Wanderweg PRTF 43 stoßen, der rund um den Vulkan führt. Wir folgen stets diesem Rundweg um den Chinyero herum und geben acht, dass wir nicht die Abzweigung hinab nach La Montañeta nehmen, sodass wir wieder zum Ausgangspunkt zurückkommen.
Este sencillo recorrido circular de poco más de 6 kilómetros de longitud nos permite descubrir uno de los parajes más hermosos de Tenerife: el conformado por el volcán Chinyero y su desolado malpaís, un conjunto nacido en la última erupción acaecida en Tenerife, en 1909. Comenzamos el itinerario en la pista de tierra que se inicia a pocos metros del kilómetro 15 de la carretera TF-38 que conecta Chío con Boca Tauce. Tomamos la pista y al cabo de medio kilómetro, enlazamos con el PR-TF 43, el sendero señalizado que rodea el volcán. Lo seguimos en todo el contorno del Chinyero, evitando el desvío que desciende hacia La Montañeta, y regresaremos al punto de inicio.

Blue Chaffinch of Teide RAFAEL RODRÍGUEZ SANTANA The blue chaffinch of Teide was the first known chaffinch species of the Canaries. Years later, another blue chaffinch from Gran Canaria was added. Right now, these two species make up one of the main ornithological treasures of the Islands. The blue chaffinch of Teide lives in the high altitude areas of the Island of Tenerife, in the pine forests and lower areas of Mount Teide National Park. It is a beautiful bird, streamlined and elegant. It can reach a wingspan of 18 cm and, as its name would indicate, has blue plumage on the breast, sides and throat which gradually becomes lighter and whitish on the belly. It is quite a friendly bird and can be observed more easily at close distance by touring the island along an itinerary of the habitats where this wonderful bird lives.

Der Teidefink war die erste, nur auf den Kanarischen Inseln beheimatete Finkenart, die entdeckt wurde. Erst Jahre später entdeckte man eine weitere Finkenart mit blauer Brust auf Gran Canaria. Beide Arten zählen zu den größten ornithologischen Kostbarkeiten der Kanarischen Inseln. Der Teidefink ist im Hochgebirge der Insel Teneriffa, in den Kiefernwäldern und niedriger gelegenen Gebieten des Teide-Nationalparks zu Hause. Es ist ein sehr schöner, zierlicher Vogel mit sehr eleganter Figur, der eine Flügelspannweite von bis zu 18 cm erreichen kann. Sein spanischer Name, Blauer Teidefink, geht auf die bläulichen Töne seiner Brust, an seinen Flanken und Kehle zurück, die zum Bauch hin zu weißlichen Tönen verblassen. Es ist ein wunderbarer, sehr zutraulicher Vogel, den Sie sehr einfach auf Wanderungen durch seine Lebensräume auf der Insel beobachten können.
El pinzón azul de Teide fue la primera especie conocida de pinzones en el Archipiélago. Años más tarde se le sumó otro pinzón azul de Gran Canaria. Actualmente estas dos especies constituyen uno de los mayores tesoros ornitológicos de Canarias. El pinzón azul del Teide habita las zonas altas de la Isla de Tenerife, en los pinares y las zonas bajas del Parque Nacional del Teide. Es un pájaro precioso, esbelto y muy elegante en su figura. Puede alcanzar los 18 cm de embergadura y, de ahí su nombre, posee tonos azulados en el pecho, los flancos y la garganta que se difuminan en tonos más pálidos y blanquecinos en el vientre. Es un pájaro confiado y les será fácil observarlo de cerca si se adentran en la Isla recorriendo una ruta por los hábitats en los que vive esta maravillosa especie.
Strelitzia Wherever you go, you will find strelitzias all over the island, whether in public parks, private gardens or emblematic spots such as Casa de Los Balcones in La Orotava. Also known as bird of paradise or crane flower, it is a perennial plant and each stem holds 5-8 flowers made up by large yellow-orange sepals and three intense blue petals. The genus of this plant is named after Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, wife of King George III of England, a German duchess of the house of Mecklenburg. She was a pupil of Johann Sebastian Bach and patroness of W. A. Mozart. Florists of Santa Cruz de Tenerife remark that the seeds of this plant and of the dragon tree are the most popular with flowerloving tourists. By the way, strelitzias blossom several times a year, and they should be planted in groups to flower.

Wohin man auch immer auf Teneriffa geht, findet man Strelitzien. Auf der ganzen Insel erfreut uns ihr Anblick in öffentlichen Parks, privaten Gärten oder an berühmten Sehenswürdigkeiten, wie dem Haus der Balkone in La Orotava. Auch bekannt unter der Bezeichnung Paradiesvogelblume ist sie eine mehrjährige Pflanze und jeder Blumenstiel besitzt 5 bis 8 große Blüten bestehend aus gelb-orangen Kelchblättern und drei tiefblauen Blütenblättern. Der Gattungsname dieser Pflanze ist Charlotte von Mecklenburg-Strelitz gewidmet, die Frau von König George III. von England und deutsche Herzogin des Hauses Mecklenburg war. Sie war Schülerin von Johann Sebastian Bach und Mäzenin von W. A. Mozart. Laut der Floristen von Santa Cruz de Tenerife sind es die Samen dieser Pflanze und des Drachenbaums, nach denen Blumen liebende Touristen am meisten fragen. Übrigens: Strelitzien blühen mehrmals im Jahr und sollten in Gruppen gepflanzt werden, wenn sie Blühten tragen.
Allá por donde vaya, encontrará por toda la Isla esterlicias, bien sea en parques públicos, jardines privados o lugares emblemáticos, como La Casa de Los Balcones de La Orotava. También conocida como Ave del Paraíso o Flor de pájaro, es una planta herbácea perenne y cada tallo floral sostiene 5-8 flores formadas por grandes sépalos de color amarillo-anaranjado y tres pétalos de color azul intenso. El nombre del género de esta planta está dedicado a Charlotte de Mecklembourg-Strelitz, esposa del rey George III de Inglaterra, que fue una duquesa alemana de la casa de Mecklemburgo. Fue alumna de Juan Sebastian Bach y mecenas de W.A. Mozart. Los floristas de Santa Cruz de Tenerife comentan que las semillas de esta planta y las del drago, son las más solicitadas por los turistas amantes de las flores. Por cierto, las esterlicias florecen varias veces al año y conviene plantarlas en grupos siempre que tengan flor.

Almost everything starts here. Even if there were travellers in former centuries, mass tourism in Europe was invented by places like Puerto de la Cruz, in the north. Famous since the fifties and with such illustrious visitors as Churchill or The Beatles, this beautiful town with extraordinary views of Mount Teide and the Orotava Valley - features a splendid historical town centre, emblematic harbour, majestic Atlantic Ocean and marvellous beaches such as Playa Jardín. It is a kilometre encompassing three bays of differing sizes, with gardens, full services and places to eat, going from the famous San Felipe Castle to Punta Brava. And to cap it all, it is found beside the Loro Parque – an absolute must.

Tegueste has several charms and one of them is its Farmers’ and Crafts Market at the entrance of the town, which opens on Saturdays and Sundays and has ample parking space. The 34 stalls of the market will tempt you with locally grown seasonal fruit and vegetables - shiny aubergines, tasty tomatoes, green asparagus... But you can also get hold of some handmade honey, a selection of meats, freshly baked bread and delicious cakes made by expert hands. If the shopping has worn you out, treat yourself to a bunch of strelitzias or roses, there are lots of flowers to choose from, while the handicraft stalls will delight you with their beautiful wares. Paisaje Lunar
This 14 kilometre round trip is clearly marked as short footpath PR-TF 72, joining the charming town of Vilaflor, the highest of the Canaries, with one of the most singular landscapes of the geology of Tenerife: the Paisaje Lunar (lunar landscape, n.d.t.), more commonly known by the islanders as Los Escurriales. These peculiar rock formations are the result of water and wind erosion on the volcanic ash. The historical Chasna footpath, part of the route which connected the south and north of the island across the cold and desolate summits of Tenerife, passes by enigmatic spots punctuated by stone houses, almond trees and venerable centenarian Canary pines.
MONDLANDSCHAFT (PR-TF 72) Der perfekt ausgeschilderte Rundweg von 14 Kilometern ist als kleine Route unter der Bezeichnung PR-TF 72 markiert. Er verbindet den höchstgelegenen Ort der Kanarischen Inseln, das reizvolle Vilaflor, mit einer der einzigartigsten, geologisch höchst interessanten Landschaften von Teneriffa: der sogenannten Mondlandschaft, unter den Einwohnern als Los Escurriales bekannt. Diese zeichnet sich vor allem durch ihre kapriziösen, durch Wasser und Wind in die Vulkanasche geschnitzte Formen aus. Über den historischen Fußweg des Camino de Chasna, der den Süden und Norden der Insel über die kalte, einsame Gipfelregion Teneriffas miteinander verband, betrachten wir auf der Wanderung herrliche Landschaften geschmückt von kleinen Steinhäusern, Mandelbäumen und majestätisch in die Höhe ragenden, hundertjährigen Kanarischen Kiefern.

As they don’t take bookings, its customers can queue for up to two hours after taking a number from the ticket machine at the entrance”. These are the words of national culinary critic José Carlos Capel in one of his articles, who is a known fan of this temple of Canary produce. Tomás Galván, proprietor of the restaurant and someone convinced that he will never retire, told the specialised journalist that “some are so obsessed with the queue that even with the restaurant has just opened and there are empty tables, they head for a ticket before sitting down”. Of course, the star dish is the unsalted pork ribs with potatoes and corn, with that wonderful mojo sauce which binds together all the traditional Canary flavours. Before that, diners can share some house chickpea stew and, for dessert, a fantastic baked custard.

This is a Japanese-inspired restaurant with an expert sushiman at the bar of an establishment serving really tasty dishes which endorse the mastery of Chef Orlando Rujano. Highly professional table service and an especially tempting touch to the makis – the gunkans are excellent – are part of the distinguishing features which match perfectly with a well-stocked wine cellar (the Paco & Lola 2010 distributed by Bodegas Torres is remarkable). Minimalist décor, friendly service, wood and flavours: at a par with the makis, the gyozas, nigiris, spicy prawns with Canary tuna, as well as ceviche and sashimis, where the keys to success are the raw materials. In short, this is a prime example of this type of variation on Japanese cuisine in the city, with the proven experience of Chef Rujano.

El Capricho de Nicomedes (Anaga-Port district).
El Capricho is the name of the establishment near the Cruise Passenger Terminal serving prime shellfish and fish (oysters, razor shells, octopus, anchovies, variegated scallops, Uga salmon, rock salmon…) as is to be expected when supplied from Nicomedes’ feud in the Nuestra Señora de África Market. This time he has transferred the concept to a more ambitious format which - scarcely a month after its opening - is causing quite a stir in Avenida Anaga. Situated in one of those emblematic spots near the port of Santa Cruz, the fish display gives us an idea of the seafood we are about to taste. Of course, in addition to the oysters and other produce from Galicia, diners will also appreciate the servings (or half servings) of fish captured in our sea (tuna, red mullet from Candelaria, fork-beard, Canary jumbo shrimp…) at a quality-price ratio which will attract people to this welcome addition to the list of places to eat in Santa Cruz.

The culinary spot - run by chefs Andrea Bernardi and Fernanda Fuentes in this World Heritage city - tells a particular story with each of its dishes, a story which – in the case of the Canary truffle combines tradition, technique and taste. This is the temple (templete means small shrine, but just doesn’t seem to do it justice) of fish. Brothers José and Miguel Barrera offer a table service at a par with the seafood, treated with the masterful touch of Chef Francisco Javier Darias. Masterful, yes, primarily when preparing one of the icons of this restaurant of southern Tenerife, the moray eel, transformed into a sort of sea crackling which is absolutely fabulous with a chilled beer or a glass of Tenerife white wine. The play of flavours and aromas is fantastic, just like the ever-present coloured potatoes served as a starter with green and red mojo sauces (which have even received the praise of Chef Albert Adriá). Some yellow-mouth barracuda with sea snail vinaigrette or novel dusky grouper ceviche with guacamole ice-cream (impeccable) can leave the guest floating in a sea of pleasure that is uncommon. A frying pan full of excellent limpets and, for meat, some carajacas or rabbit livers are just further examples of its virtues.

Das El Capricho in der Nähe des Kreuzfahrtterminals besticht durch exquisite Meeresfrüchte und Fisch (Austern, Scheidenmuscheln, Krake, Sardellen, Jakobsmuscheln, UgaLachs, Hundshai), so wie man es von dem Zulieferer in der Markthalle Unserer Lieben Frau von Afrika gewöhnt ist, der nun aber dieses Konzept in ein ehrgeizigeres Format überträgt, das nur einen Monat seit seiner Eröffnung ein großes Interesse am Anfang der Allee Avenida Anaga hervorruft. Da das Lokal keine Reservierungen entgegennimmt, warten seine Gäste geduldig manchmal bis zu zwei Stunden, nachdem sie am Eingang eine Wartenummer am Automaten gezogen haben.” So äußert sich in einem seiner gastronomischen Artikel der spanische Gastronomiekritiker José Carlos Capel, der einer der Fans dieses kanarischen Lokals ist. “Einige sind derart von der Warteschlange besessen, dass sie sich sogar -so der Journalist weiter- ,wenn das Restaurant gerade geöffnet hat und alle Tische leer sind, auf den Ticketautomaten stürzen, bevor sie sich an den Tisch setzen“, berichtet Tomás Galván, der Inhaber des Restaurants, der sagt, dass er niemals in Rente gehen werde. Casa Tomás (El Portezuelo, Tegueste).
“En ciertos días del año es más fácil conseguir sitio en la barra de Streetxo que en las mesas de Casa Tomás. Como no admiten reservas, sus clientes soportan hasta dos horas de cola después de extraer un número de turno en la maquinita de la entrada”. Así se expresa en uno de sus artículos gastronómicos el crítico nacional José Carlos Capel, que es uno de los fan de este templo del producto canario. “A algunos les obsesiona tanto la cola – afirma el periodista especializado- que incluso con el restaurante recién abierto y las mesas vacías se lanzan a por el tique antes de sentarse”, le relataba Tomás Galván, propietario del local, hostelero que asegura que no se jubilará jamás. Por supuesto, el plato estrella son las costillas de cochino desaladas con papas y millo (maíz), con ese fabuloso mojo que liga todo en sabores tradicionales canarios. Antes de eso, el comensal puede compartir una garbanzas compuestas de la casa y, de postre, una leche asada fantástica.

Speisekarte sind natürlich die entsalzenen Schweinerippchen mit Kartoffeln und Mais, serviert mit dieser fabelhaften Mojo-Soße, die einfach zu allen Aromen in der traditionellen kanarischen Küche passt. Als Vorspeise sollte der Tischgast am besten die Kichererbsen auf Art des Hauses kosten und zum Dessert die fantastische gebratene Milch.

Das gastronomische Restaurant, das von den Küchenchefs Andrea Bernardi und Fernanda Fuentes in der Stadt des Weltkulturerbes La Laguna geführt wird, beschreibt in jedem seiner Gerichte einen besonderen Diskurs, eine Geschichte, die im Fall der so genannten Kanarischen Trüffel Traditionen, Technik und guten Geschmack miteinander verbindet. Das Ehepaar entfaltet eine ganz besondere Küche, bei der eine sehr kreative Fusion zum Ausdruck kommt: sie ist Chilenin und er Römer. Gemeinsam erwecken sie tief verwurzelte Gerichte zu neuem Leben, bei denen auch Garum (die Soße des Römischen Reiches) vorkommt; oder ein Chuño interpretiert wird, bei dem die erwähnte Trüffelkartoffel Zutat ist. Besonders spektakulär sind auch die Willkommens-Vorspeisen, die auf außergewöhnlichem Geschirr des Keramikers Gonzalo Martín gereicht werden und im Fall der mit weißer Schokolade überzogenen Radieschen wirklich überraschen. Der Weinkeller ist sehr ordentlich ausgestattet die Einrichtung und Dekoration hervorragend.

Es ist der Tempel des Fisches. Die Brüder José und Miguel Barrera bei ihrem Service im Saal sind auf der Höhe der angebotenen Meeresfrüchte, denen der Küchenchef Francisco Javier Darias meisterhafte Noten verleiht. Meisterhaft zum Beispiel bei einem typischen Gericht des Inselsüdens, den Muränen, die fast eine Ikone von Südteneriffa darstellen und hier mit einer Art MeeresGrieben serviert werden, zu denen fabelhaft ein kaltes Bier oder Weißwein von Teneriffa passt. Alle Spielarten von Aromen und Geschmäckern sind fabelhaft, so wie die paradiesischen BuntKartoffeln, die als Vorspeise mit grünem und rotem Mojo serviert werden und sogar von dem berühmten Küchenchef Albert Adriá gelobt wurden. Vielleicht ein paar Bicudas mit MeeresschneckenVinaigrette gefällig? Auch das allerneueste Zackenbarsch-Ceviche mit Guacamole-Eiscreme (das Eis ist tadellos) kann den Gast in einen Zustand des Wohlseins versetzen, wie dies nur an wenigen Orten möglich ist. Eine beispielhafte Napfschnecken-Pfanne oder das Kaninchenleber-Gericht Caracajas können Ansporn sein, das Restaurant aufzusuchen.

Restaurante de corte japonés con un muy experimentado sushi-man en la barra de un espacio culinario en el que hay referencias realmente gustosas y que sirven de referencia de un Orlando Rujano que se encuentra en forma. Profesionalidad de sala muy seria y un especial toque goloso de los makis –buenísimos los gunkan- son parte de los distintivos que armonizan fenomenalmente con una bodega bien armad” (atención al Paco & Lola 2010 que distribuye Bodegas Torres). Interiorismo minimalista, amable, madera, sabores; muy en la línea de los makis, también las gyozas, los nigiris y unos langostinos picantes con túnidos de aguas canarias, además de ceviche y sashimis en los que las claves del éxito son la materia prima. En definitiva, un refuerzo para la ciudad de este tipo de cocina nipona interpretada que tiene a uno de sus cocineros experimentados en Rujano.

El Capricho de Nicomedes (Zona AnagaPuerto).
Es que así se denomina, El Capricho, el establecimiento cercano a la Terminal de cruceros de lustroso marisco y pescado (ostras, navajas, pulpo, anchoas, zamburiñas, salmón de Uga, cazón...), tal y como acostumbra el proveedor en su feudo del Mercado de Nuestra Señora de África, esta vez trasladado el concepto a un formato más ambicioso y que, apenas con un mes desde su apertura, está concitando gran interés en el arranque de la Avenida Anaga. Ubicado en una de esos enclaves históricos cercanos al puerto santacrucero, el mostrador a la vista ya nos va a dar una idea del fruto del mar que vamos a poder degustar. Por supuesto, además de las ostras y demás género que viene de Galicia, el público va a elogiar las raciones (también medias) de pescado capturado en nuestras aguas (atún, salmonetes de Candelaria, brota, gambón canario…) a un precio-calidad que animará a visitar esta agradable incorporación a la restauración de la capital tinerfeña.

El restaurante gastronómico, regentado por los chefs Andrea Bernardi y Fernanda Fuentes en la ciudad Patrimonio de la Humanidad, describe en cada uno de sus platos un particular discurso, una historia que, en el caso de la trufa canaria, concilia tradiciones, técnica y buen gusto. La pareja despliega una cocina muy especial en la que las fusiones de autor –ella chilena, él romano- rescatan platos de raíces en las que está presente el garum (la salsa del Imperio Romano) o esa interpretación del chuño que es la referida papa trufa. Son espectaculares los entrantes de bienvenida, en vajilla sorprendente del ceramista Gonzalo Martín, caso de un muy curioso rabanito recubierto de chocolate blanco. Una bodega realmente cuidada y el establecimiento y decoración es realmente de sobresaliente.

Es el templo (templete parece quedarse corto) del pescado. Los hermanos José y Miguel Barrera en su servicio de sala a la altura del fruto marino, en el que el chef Francisco Javier Darias, da un toque magistral. Magistral, sí, principalmente con uno de los iconos del restaurante sureño, la morena, con una especie de chicharrones del mar realmente fabulosos para acompañar, con cerveza helada o vino blanco de Tenerife. Fantásticos todos los juegos de sabores y aromas, tanto así como las sempiternas papas de color que se sirven como aperitivo con los mojos verde y rojo (que hasta ha elogiado el chef Albert Adriá). Quizá unas bicudas con vinagreta de burgados o ese novísimo ceviche de mero con helado de guacamole (el helado impecable) pueden dejar sumido al comensal en un estado de placidez como en pocos lugares. Una sartenada de lapas ejemplares pueden servir de acicate y, en la faceta cárnica, unas carajacas (hígado) de conejo.

PREPARATION Grind the almonds well in a mortar and set aside. Prepare syrup with the sugar, water and zest, placing over heat for 15 minutes until it acquires a syrupy consistency. Then add the ground almonds and a teaspoonful of ground cinnamon. Stir thoroughly until it thickens and then add the previously beaten egg yolks and remove from heat while continuing to stir. Put the mixture back on the heat and beat for 5 minutes until this delicious dessert is ready to serve.
Zutaten: 8 Eigelb. 500 Gramm rohe geschälte Mandeln. 500 Gramm Weißzucker . ½ Liter Wasser. Gemahlener Zimt. Geriebene Zitronenschale .
ZUBEREITUNG Die Mandeln gut in einem Mörser zermahlen und beiseite stellen. Mit dem Zucker, Wasser und der Zitronenschale bereiten wir einen Sirup zu , den wir für 15 Minuten erhitzen, bis er eine dickflüssige Konsistenz erreicht. Jetzt fügen wir die gemahlenen Mandeln und einen Teelöffel geriebenen Zimt hinzu. Gut umrühren, bis die Mischung andickt, dann das zuvor geschlagene Eigelb hinzugeben. Unter ständigem Umrühren vom Herd nehmen. Die Mischung erneut auf die Herdplatte stellen und 5 Minuten ständig rühren. Jetzt ist das köstliche Dessert fertig.
Ingredientes: 8 yemas de huevos. 500 gramos de almendras crudas peladas. 500 gramos de azúcar blanca. ½ litro de agua. Canela molida. Ralladura de limón.
ELABORACIÓN En un almirez, molemos bien las almendras y reservamos. Preparamos un almíbar con el azúcar, el agua y la ralladura de limón, que pondremos al fuego durante 15 minutos hasta que adquiera una consistencia melosa. En este momento, añadimos las almendras molidas y una cucharadita de canela molida. Removemos bien hasta que espese y añadimos las yemas previamente batidas, retiramos del fuego mientras revolvemos. Volvemos a poner la mezcla al fuego y batimos durante 5 minutos, momento en el que estará listo este delicioso postre.

The Ecocomedores Programme, promoted by the Canary Institute for Agri-food Quality (ICCA), Gobierno de Canarias, acknowledges the concern of organisations involved in the development and increase of organic food production and in the promotion of healthy and responsible eating habits in the Canary population, with a twofold pursuit: - To improve food quality in school dinners through the introduction of fresh, local and seasonal organic products. - To favour and boost the development of organic farming production in the Canaries. It started as a pilot project and has gradually grown; right now it is underway in 54 educational centres which include three Agricultural Training Schools of the Canaries and five private teaching centres, with the participation of 10,700 school diners and 102 farmers from all over the Islands who, in turn, have created associations to promote organic production.
Das von dem Kanarischen Institut für Lebensmittelqualität (ICCA), Gobierno de Canarias, geförderte Programm Ecocomedores, Öko-Mensen, spiegelt die Bemühungen der öffentlichen Institutionen um den Ausbau und die Förderung ökologischer Erzeugnisse, sowie um die Unterstützung gesunder , verantwortlicher Ernährungsgewohnheiten in der kanarischen Bevölkerung und verfolgt einen doppelten Zweck : - Verbesserung der Qualität von Lebensmitteln in Schulmensen durch die Verwendung frischer, heimischer Bio-Saisonprodukte. - Förderung und Verstärkung des ökologischen Landbaus auf den Kanarischen Inseln. Das Pilotprojekt fand einen sehr großen Zuspruch und ist inzwischen auf 54 Schulen angewachsen, unter denen sich die drei kanarischen Landwirtschaftsschulen, sowie fünf Privatschulen befinden. Insgesamt nehmen bereits 10700 Schüler/innen und 102 Landwirte/innen aller Inseln an dem Projekt teil, die ihrerseits Vereinigungen gegründet haben, die die ökologische Produktion fördern.

Surge como proyecto piloto que ha ido creciendo y actualmente se lleva a cabo en 54 centros educativos entre los que se encuentran también las tres Escuelas de Capacitación Agraria de Canarias y cinco centros de enseñanza privados y en ella participan 10.700 comensales y 102 agricultores de todas las Islas que a su vez han ido creando entidades asociativas que promueven la producción ecológica.

AFRICAN BLUES CONCERT WITH TAMIKREST Tamikrest, which means “crossroads” in the Tamasheq language, is one of the new musical bands focusing on the traditional sounds of the Tuareg people. Since it was formed in 2006 in the city of Kidal, Tamikrest has been led by singer and guitarist Ousmane Ag Mossa. Seit ihrer Gründung im Jahr 2006 in der Stadt Kidal wird Tamikrest von dem Sänger und Gitarristin Ousmane Ag Mossa angeführt. Der Wüsten-Blues ist am 3. November im CajaCanarias - Kulturraum in Santa Cruz de Tenerife zu hören.
CONCIERTO DE BLUES AFRICANO CON TAMIKREST Tamikrest, cuyo nombre significa cruce en idioma tamashek, es uno de los nuevos grupos musicales reivindican tradiciones sonoras del pueblo tuareg. Desde su creación en 2006 en la ciudad de Kidal, Tamikrest está liderado por el cantante y guitarrista Ousmane Ag Mossa. El blues del desierto llega el 3 de noviembre al Espacio Cultural CajaCanarias de Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
