Un museo, el mejor refugio para el invierno LAURA PÉREZ YANES

Bajo los techos de varias construcciones, algunas con gran valor patrimonial, Tenerife cobija con mimo su historia. Como lugar de paso entre tres continentes, la mezcla de culturas se percibe hoy en día en las tradiciones y el acervo lingüístico de los canarios. Los acontecimientos históricos, por su parte, no han sido pocos. Tampoco las peculiaridades de su naturaleza, que sobrevive majestuosa y palpitante en muchos de sus rincones. Para conocer todos los detalles que han moldeado la Isla y a sus habitantes, invitamos al lector a un recorrido por algunos de los museos más singulares.

Comenzamos la ruta en el Ecomuseo del municipio de El Tanque. Ubicado en San José de los Llanos, en el noroeste de Tenerife, esta instalación alberga una muestra de las tradiciones agrarias y ganaderas de la zona. Su propósito es reivindicar la vida rural del municipio y la historia de las mujeres y los hombres que cuidaban del entorno del Partido de Abajo, nombre con el que antiguamente se conocía a la localidad.

Viajamos ahora hacia el este y paramos en La Orotava. Allí se encuentra el Museo de Artesanía Iberoamericana, emplazado en el exconvento de Santo Domingo, una construcción del siglo XVII. El visitante podrá ver en este museo una exposición permanente de objetos representativos de distintas artesanías iberoamericanas, actuales o ya desaparecidas, que hace especial hincapié en ejemplos de la artesanía canaria.

Continuamos nuestra ruta hacia el este y nos detenemos en el pueblo de Valle de Guerra, en La Laguna, donde se levanta uno de los mejores ejemplos de viviendas solariegas del siglo XVIII: la Casa de Carta. Entre sus paredes encontramos objetos vinculados a las tradiciones locales, como la cerámica, la cestería, aperos agrícolas o textiles.

Descendemos por carretera hacia el sur de la Isla, concretamente, hasta el municipio de San Miguel de Abona. En esta zona residía la familia Alfonso, en una vivienda con un amplio patio interior, bodega y lagar. Hoy se la conoce como la Casa de El Capitán, porque uno de los descendientes alcanzó tal graduación militar, y encierra, no solo la historia de la construcción, también espacios donde se pueden descubrir la historia del municipio y objetos característicos de la artesanía sanmiguelera.

Nuestra última parada nos lleva al lugar donde vivió Juan Évora, el último habitante de Las Cañadas, en el Parque Nacional del Teide. Su casa fue rehabilitada y sus estancias son ejemplo de modos de vida tradicionales, sencillos y vinculados al pastoreo. En este museo etnográfico se exponen, también, los aspectos más significativos del espacio natural protegido donde se encuentra. ¿Te vienes de ruta?

A museum: the ideal retreat in winter Tenerife guards its history affectionately under the roofs of various buildings, some of them of great heritage importance. The island is a port of call between three continents and the resulting blend of cultures can be seen today in the traditions and linguistic heritage of the people of the Canaries. In order to discover all the details that have shaped the island and its inhabitants, we invite the reader to take a journey through some of its most special museums.

Our route begins in the Eco-Museum in the municipality of El Tanque. Situated in San José de los Llanos, in northwest Tenerife, the museum offers exhibitions illustrating local farming and livestock traditions. It is designed to showcase rural life and the history of the men and women who looked after the area, known in olden times as the Partido de Abajo (Lower Area).

We now travel east and stop off in La Orotava, home to the Museum of Spanish and Latin American Handicrafts located in the former convent of Santo Domingo, a building that dates back to the 17th century. Here visitors can see on permanent exhibition a range of objects from current or lost Spanish and Latin American crafts, with a special focus on those from the Canary Islands.

Continuing our trip eastwards, we stop next in the small town of Valle de Guerra, in La Laguna, which is home to one of the best manor houses of the 18th century: Carta House. This museum displays within its walls objects associated with local traditions, such as ceramics, basket-making, farming implements and textiles.

We next head down the motorway towards the south of the island, to the municipality of San Miguel de Abona.

This area was the residence of the Alfonso family, who lived in a house with a large inner patio, wine cellar and wine press. Known today as the Captain’s House given that one of the family’s descendants attained this military rank, it reflects the story of its construction and offers spaces to discover both the history of the municipality and typical local arts and crafts.

Our last stop takes us to the home of Juan Évora, the last person to live up in the Las Cañadas canyons in the Teide National Park. The rooms of the recentlyrestored house are an example of traditional simple lifestyles associated with shepherding. This ethnographic museum also illustrates key aspects of the protected conservation area in which it is located.

Ein Museum, die beste Zuflucht für den Winter Unter den Dächern mehrerer Gebäude, von denen einige einen hohen Wert für das Kulturerbe innehaben, erzählt Teneriffa mit viel Sorgfalt und Hingabe seine Geschichte. Als Brückenkopf zwischen drei Kontinenten gewahrt man in unserer heutigen Zeit die kulturelle Mischung in Traditionen, Brauchtum und dem sprachlichen Erbe der Bewohner der Kanarischen Inseln.

Um alle Details zu erfahren, die die Insel und ihre Bewohner geprägt haben, laden wir den Leser zu einer Rundfahrt entlang einiger der wichtigsten Museen Teneriffas ein.

Wir beginnen die Route im Ecomuseo der Gemeinde El Tanque. Dieses ökologische Museum in San José de los Llanos im Nordwesten von Teneriffa beschäftigt sich mit den Traditionen in Land- und Viehwirtschaft der Region. Sein Ziel ist es, das Leben auf dem Land und die Geschichte der Frauen und Männer in den Blickpunkt zu

rücken, die den einstmals Partido de Abajo genannten Landstrich kultivierten und pflegten.

Auf unserer Route fahren wir nun nach Osten und halten in La Orotava an. Dort im ehemaligen Kloster Santo Domingo, einem Gebäude aus dem 17. Jahrhundert, befindet sich das Museum für iberoamerikanisches Kunsthandwerk. Der Besucher kann in diesem Museum eine ständige Ausstellung repräsentativer Objekte verschiedener iberoamerikanischer Handwerke vergangener Zeiten und von heute sehen, wobei der Schwerpunkt auf Ausstellungsobjekten des traditionellen kanarischen Handwerks liegt.

Weiter in östlicher Richtung führt uns unsere Rundfahrt in das zu La Laguna gehörende Valle de Guerra, wo sich eines der schönsten altadeligen Gutshäuser aus dem 18.

Jahrhundert befindet: die Casa de Carta. Die gezeigten Ausstellungsobjekte sind mit altem Brauchtum und heimischen Traditionen verbunden, wobei Töpfer- und Korbwaren, landwirtschaftliche Geräte und Textilien im Mittelpunkt stehen.

Im Süden der Insel erwartet uns dann in San Miguel de Abona das historische Gutshaus der Familie Alfonso mit seinem großen Innenhof, Weinkeller und Anwesen. Heute ist es unter dem Namen Casa de El Capitan bekannt, da einer der Nachfahren der Familie diesen Offiziersgrad erreichte. Über die Baugeschichte des Hauses hinaus erfahren wir hier Vieles über die Geschichte und das traditionelle Handwerk des Landstrichs.

Unsere letzte Station führt uns schließlich an den Ort, an dem Juan Évora, der letzte Bewohner der Las Cañadas im Teide-Nationalpark lebte. Das wieder instandgesetzte Haus selbst zeugt von der schlichten Lebensweise der Hirten vergangener Zeiten und das in ihm untergebrachte ethnografische Museum zeigt uns die wichtigsten Aspekte des umliegenden Naturschutzgebietes.

EL PIRATA

Hay un misterio en la isla de Tenerife que, a pesar del mucho tiempo transcurrido, todavía no se ha podido desvelar. ¿Dónde está el tesoro del corsario tinerfeño Amaro Pargo? ¿Sigue escondido? ¿Alguien lo ha encontrado?

Parece que no y, de hecho, los historiadores se mantienen apuntando a una dirección: zona de Machado (entre La Esperanza y Tabaiba) y junto a la iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Rosario. Ahí hay un camino empedrado que conduce hasta unas ruinas.

Son las de la casa en donde vivió el corsario de Tenerife.

Se entiende que eligiera ese lugar, alto, para poder divisar las embarcaciones que surcaban el océano que rodea a la Isla y poderlas asaltar para llevarse el botín. Y se hizo rico.

Este pirata, cuentan, guardaba una relación de amistad con la denominada “monja incorrupta”, la siervita sor María Jesús, que influyó en la devoción del corsario.

Aproximarse a ese lugar y sobre las ruinas contemplar el paisaje es como revivir una historia de leyenda. Merece la pena visitarlo.

There is a mystery on the island of Tenerife which, despite the passage of time, is still unsolved. Where is the treasure stashed away by Amaro Pargo, the pirate from Tenerife? Is it still hidden? Has anybody found it?

It seems not and, indeed, historians continue to point in one direction: the area of Machado (between La Esperanza and Tabaiba) beside the church of Nuestra Señora del Rosario. There is a cobbled path there which leads to some ruins. They are the remains of the house where the corsair lived.

It is understandable that he chose that spot, high up, where he could observe the vessels which sailed the ocean surrounding the island and then attack them to take the loot. And he became rich.

The story goes that this pirate had a close friendship with the so-called ‘incorrupt nun’, Sister María Jesús, who influenced in the devotion of the corsair.

To come here and contemplate the seascape from the ruins is like reliving a legendary story. Well worth a visit.

Es gibt ein Geheimnis auf der Insel Teneriffa, das trotz der lange verstrichenen Zeit nie gelüftet werden konnte. Wo ist der Schatz des von Teneriffa stammenden Korsaren Amaro Pargo? Ist er immer noch versteckt? Hat ihn jemand gefunden?

Es scheint nicht der Fall zu sein und die Historiker verweisen tatsächlich weiter in eine Richtung: das Gebiet von Machado (zwischen La Esperanza und Tabaiba) und neben der Kirche Unserer Lieben Frau vom Rosenkranz, Nuestra Señora del Rosario. Dort gibt es einen asphaltierten Weg, der zu den Ruinen des Wohnhauses führt, in dem der Korsar von Teneriffa lebte.

Man vermutet, dass er diesen hoch gelegenen Platz wählte, um die Schiffe zu erspähen, die das Meer um die Insel befuhren, sie zu überfallen und Beute zu machen. Und so wurde er reich.

Nach der Überlieferung war der Pirat ein Verehrer der sogenannten “unversehrten Nonne”, der Ordensschwester Maria Jesus, die großen spirituellen Einfluss auf ihn ausübte.

Wenn man diesen Ort besucht und auf den Ruinen stehend die Landschaft betrachtet, hat man das Gefühl, eine Legende wiederzuerleben. Es lohnt sich, den Ort zu besuchen.

La Casa Amarilla, el primer centro de estudios primatológicos del mundo LAURA PÉREZ YANES

Pese a sus años de abandono, la conocida como Casa Amarilla, bien de interés cultural ubicado en Puerto de la Cruz, alberga entre sus paredes los ecos de una época en que Canarias se convirtió en pionera y referente de la investigación primatológica. Allí, a finales de 1912, se abrió el hoy considerado como primer centro de estudios primatológicos de la historia, dirigido en un primer momento por el experto en lenguaje Eugen Teuber y, a partir del año siguiente, por el psicólogo Wolfgang Köhler. Durante el tiempo en que ocupó la dirección, Köhler realizó una serie de experimentos sobre percepción e inteligencia de los chimpancés, que dieron lugar a varias monografías y a un libro, The Mentality of Apes, que se convertiría en un clásico de la psicología e, incluso, en la biblia de la reconocida primatóloga Jane Goodall.

Sin embargo, la falta de recursos, consecuencia de la Primera Guerra Mundial, y las sospechas de espionaje que vecinos británicos vertieron sobre los estudiosos alemanes provocaron el cierre definitivo del centro en 1920.

Recientemente, algunas instituciones públicas han retomado el proyecto para su recuperación como centro de divulgación histórico-científica.

Despite lying abandoned for years, the so-called ‘Casa Amarilla’ (Yellow House), a cultural asset in Puerto de la Cruz, retains within its walls the echoes of an era in which the Canary Islands were pioneers and leading light in research on primates. It was home to the first ever centre for primate studies, which opened in 1912 under the direction initially of language expert Eugen Teuber and then psychologist Wolfgang Köhler, who took over the following year. During his time in charge, Köhler conducted a series of experiments on the perceptions and intelligence of chimps. His experiments led to the publication of various monographs as well as a book called The Mentality of Apes, which was to become a classic in the field of psychology and the bible on the subject for renowned primatologist Jane Goodall. However, the lack of resources due to World War I and the accusations of espionage made against the German researchers by British neighbours led to the definitive closure of the centre in 1920. Several public bodies have recently resurrected plans to have the house reinstated as a centre for scientific and historical knowledge.

Trotz seiner sich über Jahre hinziehenden Baufälligkeit stellt das „Gelbe Haus“, die Casa Amarilla, in Puerto de la Cruz ein Kulturgut dar, das uns an eine Zeit erinnert, als die Kanarischen Inseln Vorreiter und Inbegriff der Erforschung von Primaten waren, denn in ihm wurde Ende 1912 das weltweit erste Zentrum für Primatologie eingerichtet, das unter der Leitung des Sprachexperten Eugen Teuber und ab dem folgenden Jahr des Psychologen Wolfgang Köhler stand.

Während der Zeit, in der er die Leitung innehatte, führte Köhler eine Reihe von Experimenten zu Wahrnehmung und Intelligenz von Schimpansen durch, aus denen mehrere Monografien und das Buch The Mentality of Apes hervorgingen, das sich zu einem Klassiker der Psychologie entwickeln sollte und die „Bibel“ der bekannten Primatologin Jane Goodall war.

Die in Folge des Ersten Weltkrieges entstandenen Finanzierungsschwierigkeiten, sowie der von britischen Anwohnern über die deutschen Forschungen geschürte Verdacht der Spionage führten jedoch 1920 zur endgültigen Schließung des Zentrums. In jüngster Zeit haben einige öffentliche Einrichtungen das Projekt zum Wiederaufbau als historischwissenschaftliches Informationszentrum erneut aufgenommen.

Canary Canarian palm tree The Canarian palm tree (scientific name Phoenix canariensis) can grow to heights of 30 metres. Its ability to adapt to different climates and terrains means it is found throughout Tenerife. It is a species that lives very long, up to three centuries in some cases. Palm honey is made from its sap and its large leaves are used for road-sweeping.

The palm tree can also produce fruit called támbaras, a type of berry with a trademark yellow-orange colour which is eaten by blackbirds and other birds. In other parts of the world, the tree is used for decoration and it grows naturally in various parts of the Mediterranean, as well as in California, Buenos Aires, New Zealand and Venezuela.

Palmera canaria De nombre científico Phoenix canariensis, la palmera canaria puede superar los 30 metros de altura. Al tener capacidad para adaptarse a diferentes condiciones meteorológicas y terrenos, es posible encontrarla por todo Tenerife.

Se trata de una especie muy longeva que puede superar con facilidad hasta los tres siglos. Con su savia se produce la miel de palma, y sus hojas suelen ser utilizadas para barrer las calles.

The canary is one of the animals that best symbolises the Canary Islands. The earliest information concerning the bird dates back to 1402, when Henry III of Castile was given one as a gift. Ninety years later, when the Islands were conquered, canaries began to be exported to the rest of the known world.

The bird can vary in size between 12 and 15 cm in the wild, although those bred in captivity may be larger. Its diet is varied and it eats seeds as well as oats, fruit, vegetables and insects.

The bird loves singing and sings both when free and in captivity. There are an estimated 90,000 pairs in the Canary Islands at present.

También es capaz de producir frutos conocidos como támbaras, un tipo de bayas que al madurar tienen un característico color amarillento o anaranjado y que sirven de alimento para mirlos y otras aves. En el resto del mundo se utiliza como un árbol decorativo y también se puede encontrar de forma natural en zonas del Mediterráneo, así como en California, Buenos Aires, Nueva Zelanda y Venezuela.

Kanarienvogel Kanarische Palme Die Kanarische Palme mit dem wissenschaftlichen Namen Phoenix canariensis kann eine Höhe von über 30 Metern erreichen. Da sie in der Lage ist, sich an unterschiedliche klimatische Bedingungen und Gelände anzupassen, findet man sie auf ganz Teneriffa. Die Kanarische Palme ist eine sehr langlebige Art und kann ein Alter von bis zu dreihundert Jahren erreichen. Aus ihrem Pflanzensaft wird Palmenhonig hergestellt und ihre Wedel verwendet man oft zum Fegen der Straßen.

Die von ihr hervorgebrachten Dattelfrüchte nehmen beim Reifen eine charakteristische gelbliche oder orange Farbe an und dienen Amseln und anderen Vogelarten als Nahrung. An vielen Orten der Welt wird sie als Zierbaum gepflanzt.

Sie wächst aber auch im Mittelmeerraum, sowie in Kalifornien, Buenos Aires, Neuseeland und Venezuela in wilder Form.

Canario Es uno de los animales más simbólicos de Canarias. Las primeras informaciones que se tienen de él son del año 1402, cuando Enrique III recibió un ejemplar como regalo.

Seine Ernährung ist sehr vielfältig, da er sich von Körnern, wie z. B. Hafer, aber auch von Früchten, Gemüse oder Insekten ernähren kann.

Der Kanarienvogel ist sowohl in Freiheit als auch in Gefangenschaft ein sehr singfreudiger Vogel. Derzeit gibt es auf den Kanarischen Inseln schätzungsweise 90.000 Paare.

The last remnant of the Cañadas volcano edifice Footpath 1 of the Teide National Park is accessible for all the family. It starts at the Portillo Visitors’ Centre, the threshold to this exceptional nature conservation site, and takes us after only 4 kilometres to the plain at the foot of the Fortaleza crag, providing one of the most awe-inspiring views of this emblematic volcano. This easy walk crosses a daunting, arid landscape crowned by silence and Teide white broom, queen of the summits of Tenerife, sometimes broken by the footsteps and voices of those who adventure to cross the Island on foot along the Cañada de Los Guancheros, as occurs each year on the eve of the Candelaria Feast Day.

El asequible y familiar sendero 1 del Parque Nacional del Teide se inicia en el centro de visitantes de El Portillo, puerta de entrada a este excepcional espacio natural protegido, y nos conduce en apenas cuatro kilómetros al llano que se extiende a los pies del risco de La Fortaleza, desde donde se contempla una de las visiones más sobrecogedoras del emblemático volcán Teide. El suave itinerario transcurre por un abrumador paraje árido en el que reinan el silencio y las retamas, soberanas de las cumbres tinerfeñas, interrumpido en ocasiones por los pasos y voces de quienes se aventuran a cruzar la Isla a pie por la cañada de Los Guancheros, como ocurre cada año en la víspera del Día de Candelaria.

Die Wanderung führt uns in nur 4 Kilometern zu einer Ebene zu Füßen des La Fortaleza, von wo aus man eine der atemberaubendsten Aussichten auf den legendären Vulkan genießt. Sanft leitet uns der Weg durch eine überwältigende, karge Landschaft, in der Stille und Ginsterbüsche, die Königinnen der Pflanzenwelt des Hochgebirges von Teneriffa, herrschen. Nur gelegentlich wird sie durch die Schritte und Stimmen derer unterbrochen, die die Insel zu Fuß über den uralten Weideweg, dem Cañada de Los Guancheros, überqueren, wie jedes Jahr am Vortag des Patronatsfestes der Schutzheiligen der Kanarischen Inseln, der Gottesmutter von Candelaria.

Un nombre con eco, pero dignificado en la Isla |

Escuchar Playa San Juan nos remite, inconscientemente, a otros lugares del mismo nombre, desde la costa levantina a otros rincones del mundo. En el sur de Tenerife, en Guía de Isora, existe un pueblo que responde a esa combinación de letras y sonidos pero que no solo deja en muy buen lugar su fama, sino que la dignifica. Sobre todo, tras la reforma, hace años, de las calas que componen una oferta para toda la familia: desde la playa más protegida por el puerto anexo a la más amplia, donde se prodigan casetas, paseos de madera y el cuidado de los servicios. Si la pequeña cala, de fina arena tostada tirando a dorada, garantiza un mar casi dormido todo el año, en la otra hay que tener más cuidado según nos movemos a la izquierda, aunque también prima la tranquilidad. Encima, la enorme oferta gastronómica cercana aumenta el número de razones para pasar más de un par de buenas horas.

A familiar name, enhanced in Tenerife Mere mention of the name Playa San Juan subconsciously transports us to locations of the same name elsewhere, from Spain’s east coast to other parts of the world. A small town in south Tenerife shares these very letters and sounds and not only upholds but enhances the name’s reputation. This is true particularly after the renovation work carried out several years ago in its small, family-friendly coves: from the beach sheltered by its adjacent harbour to its larger counterpart complete with huts, wooden boardwalks and well-tended facilities. In the small cove with fine sand bordering on golden you are guaranteed still waters virtually all year, whereas on the other beach you need to take greater care the further left you go, although it too tends to be calm. What’s more, the extensive food and drink options nearby are even more reason to spend a few good hours here.

Im Süden Teneriffas, in Guía de Isora, gibt es einen Küstenort, der ebenfalls diese Buchstaben- und Lautkombination trägt und ihrem weltweiten Ruhm nicht nur alle Ehre macht, sondern sie ganz besonders würdigt – vor allem nach seiner, vor einigen Jahren vorgenommenen Neugestaltung. Heute stellen die kleinen Buchten im Schutz des anliegenden Fischerhafens, Kioske, hölzernen Uferpromenaden und vorzüglichen Dienstleistungen ein Angebot für die ganze Familie dar. Wenn auch die kleinere Bucht mit ihrem feinen, goldbraunen Sand fast das ganze Jahr über ein friedliches Meer garantiert, so muss man in der anderen Bucht jedoch vorsichtiger sein, umso weiter man nach links geht, obwohl der Wellenschlag auch hier normalerweise ruhig ist. Darüber hinaus erhöht das große gastronomische Angebot in der Umgebung die Anzahl der Gründe, an dem Strand mehr als nur ein paar herrliche Stunden zu verbringen.

En el norte de Tenerife se encuentra el municipio de Los Realejos, una localidad con un gran valor gastronómico que es capaz de enamorar a las personas por el estómago. Algunos productos de toda la variedad culinaria propia de este enclave norteño son, por ejemplo, el cochino negro, el vino blanco y los pasteles.

También destaca la naturaleza del municipio, un medio único para practicar deporte. Algunas de las modalidades pueden ser el surf en la playa de El Socorro y el parapente en la pista que hay en La Corona; además, para disfrutar de senderos también está la Rambla de Castro.

Otra alternativa que explorar es la ruta 040, que comienza en la mencionada playa de El Socorro y llega hasta el pico del Teide. Se trata de una de las pocas rutas en el mundo que permiten ascender desde el nivel del mar hasta una altitud tan alta y es la más directa de toda la Isla para llegar a la cima.
