ASDEE HANDBALL STAR HONOURED AT AGM
The highlight of 2022 for members and supporters of Ballymacelligott Handball Club was the phenomenal success in Munster championships of Master players Dermot Casey and Asdee native Pat Lacey. This success was acknowledged at the Annual General Meeting of the club which took place at the Ballymacelligott Handball Complex, which opened in 1950, on Tuesday night.
During the meeting, the treasurer of the Kerry Handball Board and Ballymacelligott club secretary Danny Riordan presented both players with their hard earned Munster medals to the delight of all the attendees.
It was an exciting season for Casey and Lacey. In March they reached the Munster Masters B Doubles 40x20 final in Boherbuee where they played Tim Joe Healy (Ballydesmond) and John Lyons (Macroom) in a pulsating final. Both sets of players each won a game with the decision resting on the result of a tie break game won by just a single point by the Cork side.
However the Kerry duo extracted sweet revenge on their Cork opponents in July winning a classic and evenly contested Munster Diamond Masters 60x30 B final played in Broadford in July and ensured their place in the annals of Munster handball.

CARA TRANT RECEIVES THE KERRY HERITAGE AWARD 2022
The Kerry Heritage Award, presented by the Kerry Archaeological and Historical Society annually, honours individuals and organisations who have made a major contribution in the areas of research, development, and/or promotion of the County’s culture and heritage. The recipient of the 2022 Kerry Heritage Award is Cara Trant, Director/Curator of Kerry Writers’ Museum, Listowel.
President of The Kerry Archaeological and Historical Society, Jimmy Deenihan, in presenting the award, said that Cara Trant was a worthy recipient of the prestigious Kerry Heritage Award and now joins the list of distinguished honourees who have received the award in the past. Since Cara was appointed Director of Kerry Writers Museum back in 1999 she has been instrumental in developing the centre into a unique cultural hub that has been acclaimed by visitors from all over the world. The success of Kerry’s Writers Museum is due to Cara’s commitment and her willingness to work beyond the call of duty – sometimes late into the night – to ensure that the programmes and events that she organises and curates are current and appropriate.
A graduate of the University of Limerick, Cara Trant has been Director/Curator of Kerry Writers’ Museum, Listowel since 1999. Prior to this she worked as Development Officer for the LEADER Rural Development Programme in North Kerry. Kerry Writers’ Museum is a community owned and operated not-for-profit organisation which celebrates and promotes the rich literary and cultural heritage of County Kerry through interactive audio-visual exhibits. Cara was responsible for overseeing the development of this €1.6m project from the construction phase to the establishment of a dynamic community enterprise catering for visitors to Listowel and working with local groups and schools in developing artistic & cultural activities.
In 2015 Cara applied to the Heritage Council for museum accreditation under the Museum Standards Programme for Ireland. The Museum obtained full accreditation in 2018 and successfully maintained its accreditation in 2022.
In 2018 she curated a new permanent history exhibition in the museum entitled ‘Listowel through the Ages’ which traces the history of Listowel and North Kerry from ancient times, through medieval Ireland, the Famine and the turbulent years of war and independence.
As part of the Decade of Centenaries Programme, Cara has undertaken a number of projects with KWM Board members Jimmy Deenihan and Tom Dillon, commemorating events in North Kerry during this period including:
• Listowel Policy Mutiny 1920 – the production of an online exhibition and documentary film
• War of Independence 1921 – Online lecture series and production of a documentary film
• Work is currently underway on a programme to commemorate the Civil War in North Kerry.
In 2021 Cara curated a new permanent exhibition on the history of amateur drama in County Kerry, in conjunction with theatre historian and archivist Dr. Fiona Brennan. The exhibition entitled ‘Raising the Curtain on Kerry’s Amateur Drama Heritage’ also involved:
• Collection of material including programmes, posters, photos and play scripts
• Oral history – interviews with people across the County regarding their memories of involvement in amateur drama.
• Cataloguing the existing amateur drama archival collection at Kerry Writers’ Museum
The long-term objective of the project is to have amateur drama included on the National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Ireland.
In 2023 Cara will introduce a new exhibition on celtic illumination to Kerry Writers’ Museum, with the donation of artwork by Michael O’Connor (1913-1969), who grew up in the Georgian residence that now houses the museum.
SAN RITA WELLNESS
the buds are beginning to appear so overall it;s a sign of new life which leaves us all thinking in a more positive frame of mind.
Hope and positivity help people make better life and health decisions and focus more on long term goals
Positivity vs Negativity
So let’s get more positive
It is well proven that “What we think, determines how we feel and how we feel determines what we do“ so it does really all start with our thoughts.
Think back over the past week and answer these questions yourself:
What went well for you this past week? (Food choices, Activity, Weekend)
How did you make that happen? (Planned ahead, Made the time)
How did that help you? (Felt in control, More organized,)
How did it make you feel? (Happy, Focused, In Control) Will you continue doing the same for this week?
What are your Challenges?
We all face a challenging time, whether it’s night time or the weekends etc. Think about your own challenges that you came up against recently on your Weightloss and Wellness journey.
What were the factors leading up to it? (Weather, Feeling fed up etc)
How did that leave you feeling? (Sad, Stressed)
How did you react? (Eat, Eat and Eat) How did you feel then? (Out of Control, Off Track)
If you were faced with the same challenges again this week How could you react differently?
Would it make a difference to how you feel ?
When you find yourself struggling it’s important to think positive to keep yourself inspired and to keep trying.
For example,
You could look back on how far you have come from when you first started on your weight loss and wellness journey. Recognise the changes you feel and see in yourself. As we know nothing is ever just “Black and White“ it is important to look at the “Grey“ area in between.
For example: Imagine you have eaten something unplanned for, it’s very easy to think negatively then and say to yourself “I have ruined the day now “feel bad about it and go on to eat more and then a bad day can lead to another bad day.
So the “ Grey “ area in this case would be to think more positively and say to yourself “ Well it’s only one thing or one day , I can still pull this back “ We should think and talk to ourselves like we would to a friend.
What would you say to a friend? ( Start afresh tomorrow, You can do this)
Remember at the end of the day, we can be our own best friend or our own worst enemy.
We will leave you with this Positive thought… “Don’t wait until you have reached your goal to be proud of yourself, be proud of every step you take towards reaching your goal “

THE NIGHT INTERNS
By Austin DuffyIntravenous lines, catheters, bodies in distress, wounds: three young surgical interns working the night shift must care for - and keep alivethe influx of patients, while frightened and uncertain about what the night will throw at them.
The Night Interns beautifully conjures the alien space of the hospital wards and corridors through the viewpoint of one of the interns, as he comes to terms with the bodily reality of the patients and the bizarre instruments of healing.
Equally unsettling for the inexperienced junior staff are the dysfunctional hierarchies of the hospital workplace. Under intense pressure and with very little sleep, the interns become inured to their encounters with sickness, all the while searching for the meaning in their work.
By turns moving, shocking, and darkly funny, The Night Interns fizzes with nervous energy, forensic insight and moral tension, as it evokes life and death on the frontline.
“Stylish, mordant, and pitch-perfect - I read it in one sitting. If Rachel Cusk or Sally Rooney had been junior doctors they might have come up with something like this” - Gavin Francis, author of Recover

FINUGE GAA
AGM - The previously postponed AGM goes ahead this Friday 27th of January. Meeting at 8pm in the clubrooms. Anyone who is interested in helping the club to progress is very welcome to attend.
MEDAL PRESENTATION - Last Saturday evening the club gathered to honour the U13, U14 & U15 teams of 2022. It was a busy and productive year for these young men who accomplished great things! The U13s were the winners of the county league div 4, North Kerry league div 1 and the North Kerry A Championship. This team only lost one game all year and put in some magnificent performances throughout. All the boys received their three medals. Our U14s won the Super Touch div 2 competition and received their medal.
Our U15 young men also had a super season, the highlight of which was winning the Kerry Féile div 3 title and going on to represent Kerry in the regional Munster playoff’s held in Mallow. There they reached the final after some very fine performances across the competition. This team had gotten within a kick of a ball to win some crucial games in the North Kerry league and Championship and can count themselves unlucky not to have had more silverware on display! No doubt that there is plenty more good things to come from these young men in the future!! This team got great support from the community on their Feile journey from McCarthys Bar Finuge, Maurice Lyons Heating & Plumbing, Stacks Londis Lixnaw, JJ Walsh Butchers & Bar Lixnaw, Brownes Agri Contractors Mountcoal, Tom Kelly Scaffolding, Lixnaw GAA & Cronins Cider.
On the night, Kerry All Ireland winner and All Star Jason Foley presented the medals to each player individually and we are very grateful to Jason for giving up his time. Hopefully he will be an inspiration to many young footballers around North Kerry to go ahead and represent Kerry at the highest level. Thank you to all parents involved for their support each year and bringing the boys to training & games. Finally a big thank you to Liam Kelly Photography for capturing the event as he does with all club activity.
KERRY LADIES - Well done to the Kerry Ladies who got their league campaign off to a winning start in a tight finish. Best of luck for the year ahead especially our club representatives Niamh Carmody, Louise Galvin, Caitríona Dillon and Patrice Diggins.
BLOOD DONATION - Clinics in Listowel Arms Hotel this Wednesday & Thursday 25th & 26th of January.

Billy was a heavy metal rocker fanatic all his life. Always bestowing his love of rock (heavy rock) to both family and friends. Billy was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer in October 2021 and whilst he faced this disease with tremendous courage and strength, he passed away on February 17th 2022.
He spent a time within the Palliative Care Unit in UHK where the care, support and treatment were out of this world. He received the best care from the best team. His family will be forever grateful to this incredible team for what they did for Billy. This event is a fitting tribute to Billy and supports an amazing cause.
Unfortunately so many have been touched by this awful disease and this facility in Tralee, like so many more around the country, has offered patients superior patient care always. All proceeds from this rock night go towards the Palliative Unit, UHK. We appreciate your support!
