I want to wish all of you the Merriest Christmas ever. Knowing that the real reason for the holiday is the birth of the Savior of mankind makes that easy for me. I urge you to take possession of the most remarkable gift of all time – Salvation and eternal life through belief that Jesus Christ is the Son of God who sacrificed his life to atone for your shortcomings. God bless you all. In the motorcycle community, a ride on New Year’s Day is somewhat of a tradition, you know start the year off right. If that is part of your New Year’s tradition, I encourage you to keep your focus on the horizon, but do not forget to view 2020 in your rearview mirror. In spite of all the challenges of this year, there were still some good memories to be relished. The road ahead is always full of adventure and promise. Here’s hoping that your 2021 will exceed all of your expectations. Thank you for taking The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine along for the ride. We look forward to riding into the new year with you.

Fort Bragg Harley-Davidson Says Goodbye To 2020 And Ready For A New Year!

2020 has been a hell of a year would be an understatement. We have all had to learn how to adapt to social distancing, virtual learning, working from home, and maybe buy some stock in hand sanitizer. But while everyone else was looking for DIY projects and at home workouts, riders had no trouble getting on their bikes and hitting the road. Since 1903, Harley-Davidson has brought people together and used the power of riding to connect people with family, friends and their community. This past year has been no different. The events held at Fort Bragg Harley-Davidson may look a little different, but it never stopped riders from enjoying the open road and giving back to those who need it most. “From everyone at Fort Bragg Harley-Davidson, we want to thank you for your continued support. It showed the true colors of our community. Everyone was able to stay safe and still support our efforts in giving back to those who need it most.” said Ken Vitulli. This year, they have hosted community events like blood drives, Memorial Rides for 9/11, Mission 22, and C.V.M.A. They celebrated Lumbee Recognition Day and their 4th Annual Tata’s & Tailpipes, raised money for Cape Fear Valley Health Foundation and breast cancer research. Their family friendly Hog-O-Ween allowed kids to show off their costumes and safely trick or treat. “December will be no different” says Jennifer Pierce, Events & Marketing Coordinator for Fort Bragg Harley-Davidson. “We ensure that our dealership is sanitized throughout the entire day, bikes are wiped down after every rider and our events are held outside to help keep a safe distance. “ This month, Fort Bragg Harley-Davidson is having a special guest… Santa himself! Pierce added “To help our children in need, on Saturday, December 5th, we are having a toy drive and photo opportunity with Santa. All safety measures will be enforced”. If you can’t make it to that, you can enjoy a free breakfast with Santa on Saturday, December 19th. You can stay updated on all of their December events by following them on Facebook or on their website. Fort Bragg Harley-Davidson is still offering their Riding Academy to new riders who want to feel that freedom and excitement of the open road. “This is the gift that keeps on giving. Get on some pants, log off Zoom and experience a HarleyDavidson” says Vitulli. Fort Bragg Harley-Davidson is a full line Harley-Davidson dealership, offering new and preowned motorcycles, parts and accessories, general merchandise and apparel, service and Riding Academy. They are located at 3950 Sycamore Dairy Road in Fayetteville, NC. Visit them in person, or on line at www.FortBraggHarley.com. o say

to go riding in the mountains of North Carolina. I was all in when I heard Renegade Cycles was putting on a customer appreciation day. It’s almost a straight shot up Hwy 52 if you are in a hurry, but a nice backroad cruise if you are slightly creative….or tell your GPS to avoid highways! Maggie and I left early with chaps and leather on, and it was nice to have while we rode, but once we pulled in the sun was out and it was time to shed some layers! Like I said, it was a gorgeous day and the folks at Renegade Cycles pulled out all the stops to show their customers a good time. Rows of bikes had already arrived, and Red Dirt Revival was cranking out the tunes and keeping everyone’s toes tappin’. Nick Beck, owner of Renegade Cycles had stayed up all night cooking BBQ and man, it was tasty. They were serving up big ole BBQ sandwiches with slaw, a bag of chips and beverage, doesn’t get much better than that!

www.

FullThrottleMagazine.com

Nick & Matti Beck on a Renegade Custom Renegade Cycles was also hosting a HUGE parts sale and they had an entire bay of the shop filled with handlebars, seats, fairings, pipes, and everything else you could imagine all priced to go. I saw some folks pillaging some great parts, but if you are in need of something, you should totally check them out! To finish off the day Nick’s daughter, Mattie, took to the mic and gave away some raffle prizes. Raffle ticket money was going towards their Toy Run December 12, so it was a win win situation! (Check out the Cruisin’ Calendar for info!) They had a booth set up in front of their office with a pile of free swag from Karney Law Firm, some other random free items including a sweet leather vest, and a pile of raffle prizes from Renegade Cycles. The raffle prizes ranged from Renegade Cycles shirts and hats, oil change certificates and a $100 Renegade Cycles gift Certificate! Honestly, they have a pretty cool logo, I even had snagged a tank top for my wife and a snap back hat for myself! When the raffles ended, Red Dirt Revival took the stage for another set to close out the day. It was about time to get back in the wind, so we headed out, too. Big Thanks to Nick and Mattie Beck and the Renegade Cycles Crew for putting on a stellar event. If you haven’t been up to Dobson to check them out, you are missing out. Great shop, great folks and world class results! Check ‘em out at 1003 S. Main St. Dobson, NC.

Save The Tatas

By: Pam Irvin Pictures by Tina Khaler ctober 17th, 2020 was a beautiful cool, fall morning in Western North Carolina. The Blazing Skeletons Riding Club hosted a “Save the Tatas” ride through Sylva, NC to raise money for breast cancer research. The ride started at the Innovation Station in Dillsboro. The group rode through Sylva and ended at Rick’s Cycle

in Whittier. About 30 bikes participated in the event. Once at Ricks Cycle, riders enjoyed live music, raffles, food, a 50/50 drawing and auctions. Tina Kahler with the Blazing Skeletons said, “The event raised about $2500, which was donated to “Power of Pink”, a Haywood Healthcare foundation that provides men and women with up to 3 free mammograms per year”. Several groups came to support the cause including Simply Sick MC, The Horney Old Goats MC and The Band of Brothers. There were also folks in town from Daytona, FL and Minnesota that participated. It was a picture perfect fall mountain day and an awesome turnout for this cause.

11th Annual Blue Knights Falling Leaf Ride For The Children

By: Wally Wersching he Blue Knights International Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club is a non-profit fraternal organization consisting of active and retired law enforcement officers who enjoy riding motorcycles. In the spring of 1974, a few law enforcement officers from the Bangor, Maine area met, and formed a small local motorcycle club. Soon, Blue Knight chapters were being formed in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and beyond. With the addition of Canada, and later Australia, the Blue Knights became an international organization. Now there are chapters all over the world. The Blue Knights North Carolina Chapter XXIII “Foothills Posse” held their 11th Annual Falling Leaf Ride for the Children on October 17th. There are a few honorary members of the Blue Knights that were not former police officers. Chris

Jernigan, the director of the Southmountain Children and Family Services since 1990, is an honorary member. He works very closely with the group as they help to support the home. I know him because he is also a ”Knobbie”. Southmountain Children and Family Services operates the North Carolina’s first, and only foster community near Lake James, and Children’s Advocacy Centers serving counties all across North Carolina. The ride would start at the Oak Hill Fire & Rescue Department, on Hwy 181, north of Morganton, NC. The 100 mile ride would go through the mountains of western NC with two stops along the way, and end at the South Mountain Children and Family Services in Nebo, NC where they all would enjoy a meal with the kids. Every entrant would receive an event T-

Miss Vickie, early Victory V92 model cruiser, and Can Am Spyder shirt with their $20 registration fee. All proceeds would go to the South Mountain Children and Family Services. I had gone to the ride twice before, and thoroughly enjoyed myself. I was reminded of the date when I read about the event in the Carolinas Full Throttle Cruisin’ Calendar. I was glad that they were still holding it even during the pandemic. The weather Saturday was chilly in the morning (low 40’s) with temps scheduled to rise to the 60’s by the afternoon. There was no rain in the area. I dressed in my cold weather gear - long johns and chaps along with a sweatshirt under my leather jacket, and winter gloves. I left about 8:45am. I rode “Miss Vickie” on some back roads until I reached Rte. 18. I rode Rte. 18 north to Morganton, where it intersected with Rt 181. I took Rte. 181 north from there. It took a little over an hour, and I was comfortable – not cold at all. I was there a little before 10am – when registration was supposed to start. When I arrived, there were three bikers there. I introduced myself to the man in charge and gave him a stack of the Carolinas’ Full Throttle magazines for the registration table. I went back outside to watch the bikers roll in. I usually don’t have many police friends but these guys were very friendly. We had some very pleasant conversations. All the while, more and more bikes came rolling in, most of them thundering in, too.

15

Some of them had very loud exhaust, and stereos. I noticed a couple other Victory motorcycles, too. One was a late model bagger, and the other was an early V92 model cruiser with flames painted on it. I had seen the V92 many times at Myra’s in Valdese during their CruiseIn on Friday nights. I finally got to talk with the owner. He bought the very low mileage bike for $2,000, and never had any problems with it. Victory motorcycles are very reliable. After a while, I saw a very large early Honda Valkyrie pull in. To my surprise, Chris was riding it. I didn’t recognize him right away because of his full-face helmet. That bike sounded like a foreign sports car. It is a six cylinder bike. After he parked, we talked for a few minutes. As it got close to 11am, people were getting anxious. They wanted to ride. The man in charge described the ride, and then Chris told about the children that would eat with the bikers. They are a group of children who are learning to ride motorcycles on the trails on the property. It’s a program sponsored by Honda. When they display good grades and behavior, they get to ride the bikes. Then he thanked everybody for coming out, and even thanked me for being there for the Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine. Then a biker came up to me and told me how much he enjoyed reading my stories. He picks up a magazine every month at the local Harley dealership. It’s always nice to hear that my stories are enjoyed by the readers. After a group meeting and prayer, they were ready to ride. I looked at the route that was scheduled for the ride, and all the roads were great mountain twisties. I’m sure that they all had a fun ride. At 11am, they left the lot heading north on Rte. 181. It was difficult to get decent pictures because of the location of the sun - behind the riders. After they all left, I headed home. I decided to take the long way home through Glen Alpine. It had warmed up, so I didn’t care how long it took to get home. When I arrived in Glen Alpine, I stopped at the old mansion – “Aerie”. I love the look of that old building. I think that someone is living in it. All the windows had been replaced, and there’s a new roof. Soon it will be like (or better) than it was (when it was built in 1905. I got home a little after noon. I went out to get lunch before working around the house.

Sipe’s Orchard Home Benefit Ride Story and photo by Duane Gibbs “Thanks” goes out to the Maniax Riding Club for hosting the 2nd Annual Benefit Ride for Sipe’s Orchard Home. The original ride “Dice Run” was scheduled for June 20, but due to COVID the plans were cancelled. The Maniax were determined to do something to help Sipe’s, so a benefit ride was planned for November 7. Since 1943 Sipe’s Orchard Home has operated many different programs for preparing children and youth for their best futures. Bikers across the Hickory, NC, area regularly gather items the children need and raise money to support the home. We had a beautiful day for the ride. Many other riding clubs participated and special

supported this important event, as well as the other riders who joined us. A special thanks to Kevin Smith with the Braxton Smith Foundation and the Rolling Saints for supporting the Maniax Riding Club in a successful event for Sipe’s. Registration was held at Box Car in Claremont and from there riders headed to Carolina Patch & Leather in Statesville, the A.W.O.L. MC in Statesville, Twin Oaks/Two Trees in Denver and then back to the Maniax club house in Catawba. After the ride everyone enjoyed hamburgers and hotdogs provided by the Maniax Riding Club and music was provided by DJ Mark Day.

13th Annual Bikers With Boxes

Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, Billy Graham.org and Carolyn Brodie ikers With Boxes is an outreach of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association through the Operation Christmas Child project of Samaritan’s Purse. This is an opportunity to bless children around the world. Bikers gather toys and other fun items and some folks add a letter or photo, and bring them to the Billy Graham Library in Charlotte NC. The shoeboxes that went from the backs of motorcycles into large cardboard boxes will be distributed in more than 100 countries. Last year, more than 8.9 million boxes were collected in the United States. Saturday, October 17 served as the kickoff for Operation Christmas Child’s collection season, where more than 900 bikers from near and far drove in with packed Operation Christmas Child boxes. Through Samaritan’s Purse, each one will be distributed to a child in need across the world. They

brought more than 4,050 Operation Christmas Child boxes which included stuffed animals, school supplies, soccer balls and more gifts. Franklin Graham, president and CEO of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association and Samaritan’s Purse, addressed the crowd, sharing memories of early Operation Christmas Child shoebox distributions. Dennis Agajanian entertained attendees with his musical talents and Pastor Steve Combs shared his story of salvation.

14th Annual R.M. Campbell You Are Not Forgotten Run

By: Bill Gallaway

unday,

November 8th was a special day for the residents of the R.M. Campbell Veterans Nursing Home in Anderson, SC. This run, planned by the Teufelshunde Motorcycle Club, is put on every year to support the Veterans/Residents of the R.M. Campbell Nursing Home. Participants brought items on the resident’s wish lists to be distributed. This year the event had a different format due to the COVID-19. Participants were not allowed to visit with the residents. The riders started to arrive around noon. The official start time was 1:pm and most riders arrived between 1:00 and 4:00 p.m. Those that made it were greeted by representatives of R.M. Campbell and the residents awaiting our arrival from a distance. Some waved from the windows of their rooms. It was a beautiful partly sunny fall day with temperatures in the 70’s, so everyone was comfortable. There were skydivers,

with one huge American flag, loud cannons with lots of smoke, and plenty of food compliments of the vendors. There was also jewelry and biker items for sale. It was a very patriotic and festive event. There were hundreds of motorcycles in the parking areas. While I was there many riders came and got a T-shirt, dropped off their donation, met up with old friends and visited for a while and were on their way. I know I won’t forget the event and can’t wait until next year for the 15th Annual You Are Not Forgotten Run. Hopefully things will return to normal as we beat this virus. A special thank you goes out to Teufelshunde Motorcycle Club for organizing this Annual event. And thanks to all our Veterans and residents of RM Campbell Nursing Home, Thank You for Your Service.

Ride For Deputy Eric Batchelor

By: Pam Irvin Eric Batchelor works as a patrol deputy with the Haywood County Sheriff’s Department. He began working in law enforcement after retiring from the Army after 20 years of service. He was working patrol in Haywood County the early morning hours of July 28th, 2020. He was shot in the line of duty when responding to a call that morning. Thankfully, he survived the incident. He has gone through several surgeries, physical therapy and doctor visits and has been out of work for several months, but hopefully will be returning to work soon. The Independent Brotherhood hosted a “Ride for Eric” on Sunday November 1, 2020. It was a gorgeous, brisk, cool fall morning. The ride started at Pisgah High School in Canton, NC. When riders registered, they were given a meal ticket and had chances to buy raffle tickets and 50/50 tickets. Deputy Batchelor attended the event and spoke to the group expressing his gratitude. The Independent Brotherhood presented Deputy Batchelor with gifts for him and his family. The ride kicked off at roughly 1 pm. Over 60 bikes paraded through the back roads of Haywood County, through Waynesville, Hazelwood and back to Canton. The ride ended at the Canton Rec Park. Food was provided to the participants by Fat Belly’s Food Truck. If you ever see Fat Belly’s set up, do yourself a favor and try the food, it is all amazing. Over $5500 was raised that day. One of the hot raffle items was a Remington 308. Several business donated items for door prizes and raffle items as well. Riders walked away with some pretty cool gifts. Several clubs were in attendance to support Deputy Batchelor. Some of the ones represented were the host, Independent Brotherhood, The Blue Knights, Blue Iron, The Blazing Skeleton, Brothers in the Wind, The Chrome Angelz, and the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association. It was truly an amazing sight to see all of these folks coming together to show their support for one of our law enforcement eputy

Pam Irvin, Deputy Eric Batchelor, Tina Smith-Jones officers. It just goes to show the biker community is one big family that is always willing to support one another. A video was taken by Deputy Sean Aaron with the Haywood County Sheriff’s Office. He is also a member of the Independent Brotherhood. Sean commented, “This event went very well, Thank you to all who attended and supported Deputy Eric Batchelor; Blue Knights, Chrome Angelz, Blue Iron, Blazing Skeleton, Brothers in the Wind, and Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association, and all other individual riders.”

Charity Ride For The Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation By: Len Montgomery

ike many events this year, the

Angier Bike Fest was cancelled as a result of the Governor’s Phase 2 restrictions. The annual charity ride associated with the bike fest was also cancelled, leaving an empty place in people’s hearts and the bank account of the charity it supports, the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation. And while it wasn’t possible to undo missing of the festivities, Tony and Arlene Mabry and Seven Sabres Brotherhood were able to arrange the charity ride which ultimately took place October 17, 2020. It was kind of a chilly morning when the registration table opened at 9 am, but it was soon in the 50’s and a beautiful day for a ride. So, after riders were set and a prayer was offered up for a safe ride, 47 bikes fired up at once and shook the little community of Angier. As we pulled out, led by Seven Sabres

Brotherhood, the ride took us through some beautiful backroads in route to the Deep River Camelback Truss Bridge which spans the Deep River from Lee and Chatham Counties. We pulled in at the Deep River Park in Gulf, NC and the bikes pretty much overwhelmed the parking. But it was a beautiful space with river access, a shelter up on a hill for small gatherings, and of course the bridge (which can actually be reserved for parties as it turns out). It was a great place to stretch your legs and enjoy nature and fellowship. After stopping at a nearby store for gas and refreshments, we all headed back toward Angier and Vicious Fishes, a local brewery. As we pull into the parking lot, we are treated to music by Rebel Fox, assortment of patches and other wares by Birdie’s Beads (best patch seamstress in the Carolinas), H&J It’s The Bombay food truck, and of course cold beer brewed on site.

Jessica Blankenship As we relaxed and took in the food, music and beer, I had the opportunity to meet several people, but two stood out. First was Roland Cargill who is a Task Force Leader with Ride for Kids Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation in the Triangle and also Director with Bull City HOG. The second person was the real star of the day however, 24 year old Jessica Blankenship. She was on the ride with us as she celebrates 20 years brain tumor free!! Congratulations Jessica!! At a very young age, Jessica was diagnosed with a rare brain tumor in her left temporal lobe called Ganglioglioma. At

27

the age of 4, she underwent surgery for the brain tumor. And as she tells it, the surgery left her needing to relearn everything she had learned in her 4 short years. That’s a lot to overcome for anyone. But overcome she did. Not only has she been tumor free for 20 years, but she has graduated high school, is attending Elon University where she is doing great and working towards a psychology degree. Quite a remarkable success story for Jessica and the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation which she considers as her family. And she is giving hope to countless families whose children are going through similar health issues. Over $1,400 was raised to support the foundation. Of course, there were numerous sponsors outside of the riders that day. RLT Construction, Ace Hardware, The Propane Store, ProGunNC, Vicious Fishes, Thomas Reichenbacher and Subway all contributed to the cause. But as Arlene Mabry said, “This is all about the kids, making sure they get better so they can just be kids.” I couldn’t agree more. Don’t worry if you were unable to be there this year for the ride, you can still contribute by contacting Tony and Arlene, Jessica’s Journey webpage (https://team.curethekids.org/ team/262387) or the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation website. And the Angier Bike Fest will be back for the 20th year in 2021 (the first weekend of June) with a weekend of fun and another charity ride. Mark your calendars and I’ll plan to see you there!

Need A Friend? Ever been out riding around and seen all the empty buildings and old home places? You wonder what has happened to all the people and families that lived in them. I imagine some have passed away and the kids are grown and married and moved away. I’m sure families have fussed and argued about who gets what. But you know what, that doesn’t really matter in the long run, if it tears families apart. What really matters is family. Saw this in my devotions: Friends. One day, all of us get separated from each other. We will miss our conversation. Days, months and years will pass until we rarely see each other. One day our children will see a photo and ask, “Who are these people?” And we will smile with invisible tears and say, It was with them that I had the best days of my life. Life is too short. Grudges are a waste of happiness. Laugh when you can, apologize when you should, and let go of what you can’t change. Love deeply and forgive quickly. Love and family is too short to be unhappy. Need a friend or someone to talk to that will never get mad at you or leave you? Call on Jesus, He’ll always be there for you 24/7. Don’t lay awake at night thinking and worrying

about it, just give it to Jesus, He’ll be up all night anyway. Whatever is going on God can take our broken hearts and make us new. 2 Corinthians 5: 17. If anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here.

Cheers To Charlie Clark Story by Alan Dockery e have lost yet another

brother to cancer. Charlie and Tonya Clark had big travel plans for the Sturgis 2020 event, but then Charlie was suddenly diagnosed with cancer only one month prior. He fought hard but lost his battle on October 23rd. Before the annual Halloween Party at Riders’ Roost Motorcycle Resort, Ferguson, NC, we gathered to celebrate the life of our fallen brother. Charlie’s beverage of choice was Budweiser, so it was our celebration drink of the day. Charlie was one of the longest partying folks in the group we call Roosters. He rode in as soon as the place opened to the public. I met him 24 years ago when I moved back to North Carolina. Over those years, we rode, camped and partied with the Hickory biker crowd many times. Aimee Murray lead the celebration of life with words of prayer and thanks for Charlie’s life, then offered an open floor for the rest of us to share both funny and heartwarming Charlie stories. He is the guy I tell about running over me with his motorcycle while I sat in a lawn chair when he did a burnout in the Hot Springs Campgrounds and the rear tire suddenly hooked up. We shared both laughter and tears as we were toasting Charlie. Just to look at him you knew Charlie was a tough man. Obviously hard working and skilled. He was the first to volunteer to help. I don’t recall ever seeing him actually throw a punch, but a few times I jumped up to join in when I thought he was about to fight someone. Charlie was quick to defend his friends. However, as tough as he was, if Charlie ever hurt you physically or emotionally, he would apologize for a while after. “I’ve known him for more than 25 years. Charlie was like a brother to me,” said Belinda Crane-Isenhower. “Though

rough around the edges, he was passionately loyal to his close friends and family. He always had your back! Almost to a fault, because Charlie didn’t think twice about pulling put his knife or gun to defend one’s honor.” Jim Minnix ended his Charlie story by asking Tonya how she put up with him for so many years. Yes, his wife is a pretty, sweet, quiet woman and it was so good to see her there smiling with us. She retorted by saying with a big smile that Charlie was a real handsome hunk of a guy when she first met him. “I don’t know how to put anything into words now, but he truly loved his family and friends,” Tonya said. “Charlie loved life and lived like it was his last day. He was proud of his accomplishments in his job and life. He was proud of his children and so very proud of his four grandchildren. We had lots of things we wanted to do so I’m going to do them for us and make him proud.” Tonya ended by saying “To Charlie’s friends, remember the good times and keep his memories alive forever. I will miss him every day. Thirty one years with Charlie was just not long enough.” I know his spirit will be with us on the creek for years to come. I’ll think about him the next time I sip a Budweiser by the campfire. Cheers to Charlie!

Haywood Bikers For Toys

By Pam Irvin Photo By Sean Aaron Photography on’t tell Haywood County bikers they can’t have a toy run for Christmas. As with so many events, the original Haywood County Toy Run group canceled their annual event due to Covid restrictions and decided to host a virtual toy run instead. A group of Haywood County bikers decided that they wanted to continue the toy run tradition and organized their own event to raise money and collect toys for kids at Christmas. On Saturday November 14, 2020, Haywood Bikers for Toys 1st annual toy run took place. What an amazing turn

out! There were over 200 bikes gathered for the event. The last count I was given was over $5600 in money raised and a trailer full of toys were collected for the children. Donations are still coming in so these numbers are growing. The weather was perfect for riding in Western North Carolina that day. Bikers gathered in the parking lot of Woodland Baptist Church off Hwy 209 in Waynesville. From there, the ride went down Hwy 19/23-74 to Hazelwood, then through Main Street Waynesville. It continued on through the Town of Clyde, then into the Town of Canton and back to the Church. Local Law Enforcement agencies assisted with traffic control along the way. Food was provided after the ride by Hit the Pit Barbecue. I hope this is a tradition that will continue for years to come. Personally I don’t think there can ever be too many toy runs. The motorcycle community is all about coming together in a time of need, especially when it comes to children. Watch A Video From This Ride! Scan This QR Code With Your Smartphone

Antique Motorcycle Club of America Southern National Swap Meet By: Lincoln Infield Photos By: Lincoln Infield & Maggie Infield ig events and toilet paper are two things that

have been scarce in 2020. The AMCA Southern National Swap Meet is usually the third weekend in May and was one of the many events that got caught up in the havoc of 2020. I’m not gonna say it didn’t suck to miss out on this event, it being a 11-year tradition and all, but I wasn’t surprised when I got the cancellation call. As the months rolled on a rumor started up that there may still be hope of having the Southern National Swap Meet in October. I took it with a grain of salt until I got the green light from event organizer, Bob Aton, that the Meet would be October 16-17. We slapped the new dates on an ad and ran it in the September issue and the event started gathering momentum again! This is such a great event that the entire family can attend and enjoy. In years past, I have taken my pre-teen daughter to get a little “learnin” on old motorcycles, this year my wife, Maggie, was able to join the Full Throttle Magazine crew and

enjoy the Southern National. We headed out early on Friday morning to go set up our vending spot, as we rounded the last curve on our approach to the Denton Farm Park that hosts the event, I was blown away at the number of vendors and visitors I could see from 100 yards away! I had been a little apprehensive of how the event was gonna go, what with the late notice of the rescheduled dates. Apparently, everyone else was as excited about this event as we were! Once we made a stake to our claim and set up our HQ, we set out to see what we could see! The Denton Farm Park is a perfect match for this event and pairs a historical park with 15 restored buildings, including a general store, grist mill, church, plantation house, blacksmith shop, and a log cabin with the sights, sounds and smells of antique motorcycles buzzing and puting all through the park. Ya gotta stop off at the AMCA tent to get your “souveeners” cause they sell out early. This year’s event was a celebration of the 70th Anniversary of the 80” Indian Chief and the commemorative shirts, pins and stickers were stellar. Our next stop was just around the corner at the Rusty Nutz Lounge, Machine Shop And Notary Race Team where the curator, Joe Cranford, had on display the AMCA coozie museum and displays the progression of the AMCA Coozie over the years. Joe also brings a slew of fun looking small cc antiques to show and have judged. This year, he showed a 1985 Honda Spree in the Concourse D’Ordinare and brought home the “Least Chrome” award. There were vendor’s tents with crusty and chrome offerings along with antique motorcycles of all shapes and sizes for as far as the eye could see. There are always folks picking through boxes and crates looking for those illusive old parts.

Ramsey Allen on a H-D Knucklehead Servi-Car

Others are rolling away with front ends, frames, pipes, bars or complete motorcycles. If you need it, you can probably find it at the Southern National Swap meet, but you better get there early when the picking is good! The other part of the excitement around this event, you see all kinds of cool old motorcycles ranging from unique Danish made Nimbus (model C, I think) that was sitting all by itself behind one of the buildings on the property, or the ultra-rare shaft driven, Harley-Davidson Knucklehead Servi-Car that was being piloted around by Ramsey Allen. Naturally, you see all sorts of other beautiful antiques like the knuckles, shovels, flatty’s and single cylinder scoots that are more like what we are used to seeing. This year, I saw an abundance of Servi-Cars. We always bring out the Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine

Maggie with Oliver Peck

’73 Servi-Car and usually see one or two others, but this year I counted at least 10 Servi’s running around the property. This year’s event was a little different than usual. It went on with no bike games nor the History In Motion parade that has made the Southern National Meet an icon. These missing items were made up for in the huge abundance of vendors, quality swap meet items, and celebrities. I saw a couple of local and national celebrities including Billy Lane of Choppers Inc., Oliver Peck from Elm St. Tattoo in Dallas, Texas and the TV show Ink Master. Both were as easy going and hospitable as you could ask for. The local legends were in attendance as well including Luke Heafner who brought his Builtwell People’s Choice Shovelhead Chopper and Doug Wothke who was a banquet speaker at a past Southern National and has ridden his motorcycles across the US, Europe and Asia. I even ran in to Jake from Prism Supply Co. checking out this years vendor offerings. This year’s event had great fall weather, I still love the hot May weather and ducking down in the wooded part of the farm park to get away from the sun, but it really was a great weekend and certainly better late than never! We thoroughly enjoyed our weekend hanging out with friends, sharing old stories, stumbling into new ones and naturally checking out all Antique Iron we could. The weekend wouldn’t have been complete without a fried bologna sandwich, so as the sun went down, we visited the mess trailer and got one with all the fixin’s. It was a perfect way to end the weekend. Whether the Southern National is in May or October of next year doesn’t matter, we will be ready for another great weekend with our friends. If you love old motorcycles, you should certainly check it out.

7th Annual Oconee & Pickens Counties Toys for Tots Toy Run

By: Bill Gallaway

Sunday, October 25th, Oconee and Pickens County South Carolina held their 7th Annual Toy Run. The day was a cloudy overcast fall day with no sun and temps reaching 74 degrees. The Run rally started at 1pm at the Central, SC Wal-Mart with the ride beginning at 2pm. This was convenient since n

there were many riders that were rushing inside to buy that special toy before 2pm. Those that didn’t need to shop hung out in the parking lot staging area and visited with old friends. The ride left the Central, SC Wal-Mart with a police escort and traveled thru Central, Clemson and Seneca heading north into West Union, SC. There was a police escort due to the large number of bikes (43) and 5 cages. The streets of all towns on our route carried light traffic or were empty of traffic for the most part. However, the cross streets still needed to be blocked for us to pass by. There were police cruisers and a fire trucks from Central, and Seneca, blocking all major intersections as we passed thru the towns. The police kept us safe on our ride. Those that did hear the roar of the thundering motorcycles did venture out to see what was going by. If they were in vehicles, they pulled over to let our procession go by. What they saw was a procession of 43 Motorcycles carrying toys for the under-privileged children of Oconee & Pickens Counties. It was a sight to see as observers waved to us as we rode by. The ride ended at the West Union Park by the West Union Fire Station. Upon arrival, riders took their toys up to the Toys for Tots Train. We were greeted by the Mayor of West Union, Linda Oliver, with bottles of water on Ice. It ended up being a joyful day for all participants and observers and a great way to kick off the holiday season. Many thanks go out to the organizers Bobbie Smith, Mike Fieseler, the Marine Corp Reserve and to the police officers and fire fighters that brought out the fire trucks and escorted us along our route.

Open Doors Ministries Host Cape Fear Teen Challenge’s 1st Annual Motorcycle Ride

Doors Ministries hosted Cape Fear Teen Challenge in their 1st annual benefit ride, on Saturday, September 26, 2020. They rely on the generous support of donors, income from micro enterprises, and student tuition. We are supposed to help one another so let’s have fun doing that when we can, was the message from Open Doors Ministries. Pastor, Dale Taylor, led with prayer for a blessed ride and event. Prayers for the Cape Fear Adult/Teen Challenge, as it’s been a rough year. The ministry of Cape Fear Teen Challenge is to help one another; to be a light when it seems all is dark, to provide help in time of need and to build a foundation for each individual to grow. Open Doors Ministries welcomed riders from Sons of God MC and their His Laboring Few Biker Ministry of Jesus Christ along with independent riders. Everyone was definitely ready to twist their wrist for a great cause. Kick stands were up at 11 am and the ride was great! pen

There was that calming feeling you get when all you hear is the “Roar of the Ride!” Everyone returned to fellowship. There were also delicious chicken plates, a raffle and prizes. Everyone was winning prizes having a good time and celebrating love, hope and charity. The pastor would win a prize and look around to see who to give it to. Yes, it’s always that kind of atmosphere each time I visit. Everyone is welcomed and ya feel right at home at Open Doors Ministries. They welcome all to join in worship at Open Doors Ministries 2407 E. Broad Street in Elizabethtown, NC 28337. It’s always a great time when you just ride and help someone at the same time! Charlotte CBA Fall Swap Meet & Bike Show

By: Lincoln Infield Photos By: Lincoln, Maggie, & Ms. Cat obert “Bubba” Morgan, CBA Member and Swap Meet Staff, said it right on Saturday November 14th, in regard to the CBA swap meet, “you don’t realize how much you will miss something until you don’t get to do it.” He was spot on. The Charlotte CBA Fall Swap Meet is usually the second of the year for Swap Meet coordinator Rick Nail and the CBA crew that puts it all together. The Spring edition got cancelled at the very onset of the pandemic restrictions. Determined that this event would happen, the Swap Meet crew added “peaceful protest” to the event name. The motorcycle gods approved and provided a sunny 65˚ November day for the 48th Annual event. We arrived at the Rowan County Fair Grounds to find the parking lot jammed with motorcycles and the midway as full of vendors as I have ever seen it. I love these swap meet events. I usually don’t have anything in particular that I’m shopping for but enjoy looking over the piles of parts and random biker type stuff for a deal or something unique for the office wall. There was everything from crusty project bikes, shovel and panhead engines waiting to be a project and all the parts in between. Hell, I even saw some golf cleats. Ya never know what your gonna see! The two buildings were also full of swap meet set ups. I always check inside for new patches, stickers, rings or leathers that I might need. As always with this event, it’s not just a swap meet , but a family reunion of sorts, too. It’s hard to make it a few feet without running into one of your chums, so it may take you all day to make your way around the whole show! The Swap Meet features a 2 day bike show that is housed in one of the permanent buildings on site. This year’s bike show brought in some real beauties. I saw Flatheads, Panheads, A Knucklehead, Shovelheads, CB’s, Indians and more. The bikes ranged from rat to stock to radical and all of them were an eyeful! Three of the bikes in the show have been featured in the Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine including Luke Heafner’s Shovelhead Dracula chopper, The Rebel Spirit’s

Boogie Nights CB 750 Chopper and Mike Morgan’s “HarleyDavidson and the Marlboro Man” Black Death 3 replica. That final assembly was handled by the guys at Jaybird’s Custom Cycles. The rest of the bikes were stunners as well, I’m glad that I didn’t have to choose a winner! One cool side note of the day was when Luke Heafner hooked me up to shoot some photos of Diane Baldwin on his Dracula chopper. The back story there is that Luke built the chopper around a tank that came off of Click Baldwin’s (Carolina Harley-Davidson) first chopper. Click passed away in 2008 and Diane recently gave family friend, Luke Heafner, the tank for a world class build. Luke really came through and the bike is killer! It was a pleasure to meet Diane and an honor to be able to take the photos. Check out the February 2020 issue to read our interview of Luke as he was mid build on the Dracula bike.

Under the live music tent, the band was cranking out the tunes for those who were taking a break from the other festivities. The tent was set up right by the grill and the food trucks. I tell you one thing, if you didn’t get a porkchop sandwich, you did the event wrong. I had ‘em make me one “all the way” that included lettuce, tomato, cheese, onions, chili, pickles and mustard. It was a hell of a mess, but it was so damn good! During set break a crowd gathered for a few contests. Up first was the Beard competition put on by the Cardinal Beard Co. Dave Smith took home 1st place and $150, Chris “Hoppy” Hopkins grabbed $100 for 2nd place and “Sleepy” Lee Payseur walked away with 3rd place and $50. Not a bad pull for standing around being scruffy! The beard competition was just a warmup for what we really wanted to see; the Pinup Contest. Three lovely ladies took the stage to win over the crowd. When the whooping and whistling ended it was clear that Heidi Hesse would take home $250 and be the pinup queen for the Fall Swap Meet. Angie Jones collected $150 for second place and the lovely Genevia Morgan came in 3rd and scooped up $100. Moral of the story is, it pays a hell of a lot better to be a hot pin up girl than a scruffy biker type. The Swap meet is an all weekend ordeal and Sunday the vendors were back at it, but the big story was the bike show. Jay Muma was the big winner with his 2008 Street Glide Classic “Dead AF”. Jay took home 1st place people’s choice, 1st place custom dresser and best display. He took home all the bragging rights, hardware and $500 cash. One Motorcycle Ride

By: Gabby Mintz Vice President, CBA/ABATE of NC-Gaston County Chapter

ne motorcycle ride has forever changed the lives of

Southern Gentlemen Louie “Misfire” Morico and his fiancé’ Crystal “TwistleLivermush” Terry, who are both well-loved CBA members. Louie was transported by helicopter. Both with broken backs, ribs, collapsed lungs and internal bleeding. After weeks in 2 separate hospitals occupying rooms in the trauma unit, they both were reunited at home. Unable to work and confined to wheelchairs, maneuvering around their home was a huge problem. However, his SGMC Brothers sprang into action and built a wheelchair ramp to ease their recovery. They both had a Guardian Angel with them on that day. Some might say “God had a huge hand in the outcome”. Community outpouring of love for them came from all directions. A benefit was held recently at Filthy Lu’s Saloon in Gastonia, NC. Donations came in from everywhere. A special thank you to all that contributed. There are way too many to mention, but y’all know who you are. This experience has brought the love they have for each other even closer. One of the things that’s kept them going are the letters they read that people have dropped off in the letter and donation boxes at Filthy Lu’s Saloon and Clocks Cycles in Dallas, NC. cycle community and even strangers leave a get well note, a card, a donation to help them cope with the aftermath of that one motorcycle ride. The boxes are taken up to Louie and Crystal weekly. If you would like to contribute, a Go Fund Me page has been setup at https://gf.me/u/yvfdw4 . When getting this article together, I had the pleasure of talking with my very good friends - Louie and Crystal on several occasions. It’s a known fact that this One Motorcycle Ride has forever changed their lives. Intensified their already power couple relationship and their unconditional love for each other. No doubt they will get thru this! They both want everyone to know how much they appreciate all the love and support they have received. Please continue dropping the letters, cards, notes off and you can try them on Facebook. This brings me to what (The CBA) stands for. “We” as a whole, fight for ALL bikers’ rights. If you’re not a member ask yourself why not, if you were a member and your membership has lapsed, why haven’t you renewed?? You receive $3,500 worth of accidental life insurance free. A single membership is only $20. and a couple can join for $30. You can join or renew online at: GastonCountyCBA.com/. Look Twice Save A Life Motorcycles Are EVERYWHERE!! One half of all motor vehicle accidents the view of motorcycle was limited. 70% of motorcycles are not seen. All that ride are subject to going down. Being a survivor of a motorcycle accident myself I know too well the effects it can have on you.... mentally, physically and financially. Wishing all of you a Very Merry Christmas. Fort Bragg HarleyDavidson is holiday ready. The month of November was for Thanks and Giving. Everyone has been busy with getting celebrations in place for the holiday season. First on the agenda, was posting all the costumes from Hog-O-Ween and showing off the creative and absolutely adorable winners. Next, they moved right into stocking all the Thanksgiving and Christmas items that we all love! This includes their long sleeve specials that were 20% off! Fort Bragg Harley-Davidson kept the month moving and shaking with their events and sales. The Fort Bragg HOG chapter completed several rides to include one for a bird rescue. I am not sure that a turkey got a pardon, but funds were raised to help with the Vass Tropical Bird Rescue. There were many salutes to our troops; honor and remembrance to those that serve our nation. We are the “Home of the Free, Because of the Brave.” Fort Bragg Harley-Davidson also works to ensure that all service members are honored. he staff at

remember how we used to drive you crazy with water guns?” Mom smiled and then replied... “I remember!” Two guys are driving through Georgia when they get pulled over by a state trooper. The trooper walks up, taps on the window with his nightstick, the driver rolls down the window, and the trooper smacks him in the head with the stick. The driver says, “Why’d you do that? The trooper says, “You’re in Georgia, son. When I pull you over, you’ll have your license ready.” Driver says, “I’m sorry, officer, I’m not from around here.” The trooper runs a check on the guy’s license, and he’s clean. He gives the guy his license back and walks around to the passenger side and taps on the window. The passenger rolls his window down, and the trooper smacks him with the nightstick. The passenger says, “What’d you do that for?” The cop says, “Just making your wishes come true.” The passenger says, “Huh?” The cop says, “I know that two miles down the road you’re gonna say, “I wish that sucker would’ve tried that stuff with me!”

about your dad’s dad? How old was he when he died?” The old biker said, “Who said my grandpa’s dead?” The doctor said, “You mean you’re 80 years old and your grandfather’s still living! How old is he?” The old biker replied, “He’s 117 years old.” The doctor was getting frustrated at this point and said, “I guess he went riding with you this Sunday too?” The old timer said, “No... Grandpa couldn’t go this week because he got married.” The Doctor said in amazement, “Got married!! Good Lord!!! Why would a 117-year-old guy want to get married?” To this old biker smiled and answered, “Who said he wanted to?”

Three men die in a car accident on Christmas Eve. They all find themselves at the Pearly Gates waiting to enter heaven. On entering they must present something relating to or associated with Christmas. The first man searches his pocket, and finds some mistletoe, so he is allowed in. The second man presents a cracker, so he is also allowed in. The third man pulls out a pair of stockings. Confused at this last gesture, St Peter asks, ‘How do these represent Christmas?’ Answer: ‘They’re Carol’s.’

A cop was patrolling late at night in a wellknown spot. He sees a couple in a car, with the interior light brightly glowing. The cop carefully approaches the car to get a closer look. Then he sees a young man behind the wheel, reading a motorcycle magazine. He immediately notices a young woman in the rear seat, filing her fingernails. Puzzled by this surprising situation, the cop walks to the car and gently raps on the driver’s window. The young man lowers his window. “Uh, yes, Officer?” The cop says: “What are you doing?” The young man says: “Well, Officer, I’m reading a magazine ......” Pointing towards the young woman in the back seat the cop says: “And her, what is she doing?” The young man shrugs: “Sir, I believe she’s filing her fingernails.” Now, the cop is totally confused. A young couple, alone, in a car, late at night parked on lover’s lane, and nothing obscene is happening! The cop asks: “What’s your age, young man?” The young man says: “I’m 21, sir.” The cop asks: “And her ... what’s her age?” The young man looks at his watch and replies: “She’ll be 18 in 11 minutes.” When my three-year-old son opened the Christmas gift from his grandmother, he discovered a water cannon. He squealed with delight and headed for the nearest sink. I was not so pleased. I turned to mom and said, “I’m surprised at you. Don’t you

During a recent password audit, it was found that a blonde was using the following password: “MickeyMinniePlutoHueyLouieDeweyDonaldGoofyRaleigh”. When asked why she had such a long password, she said she was told that it had to be at least 8 characters long and include at least one capital.

What kind of motorcycle does Santa ride? A Holly-Davidson! An 80 year old man went to the doctor for a check-up and the doctor was amazed at what good shape the guy was in. The doctor asked, “To what do you attribute your good health?” The old timer said, “I’m a biker and that’s why I’m in such good shape. I’m up well before daylight on Sundays and polishing my ride to parade through town on my way to the best twisties and curvy country roads I can find at the crack of dawn.” The doctor said, “Well, I’m sure that helps, but there’s got to be more to it. How old was your dad when he died?” The old biker said, “Who said my dad’s dead?” The doctor said, “You mean you’re 80 years old and your dad’s still alive? How old is he?” The old biker said, “He’s 99 years old and, in fact, he went riding with me this Sunday, and that’s why he’s still alive... he’s a biker too.” The doctor said, “Well, that’s great, but I’m sure there’s more to it. Little Zachary was doing very badly in math with this online learning. His parents had tried everything, tutors, mentors, flash cards, special online learning centers. In short, everything they could think of to help his math. Finally, in a last ditch effort, they took Zachary down and enrolled him in the local Catholic school because they were holding in person classes. After the first day, little Zachary came home with a very serious look on his face. He didn’t even kiss his mother Hello. Instead, he went straight to his room and started studying. Books and papers were spread out all over the room and little Zachary was hard at work. His mother was amazed. She called him down to dinner. To her shock, the minute he was done, he marched back to his room without a word, and in no time, he was back hitting the books as hard as before. This went on for some time, day after day, while the mother tried to understand what made all the difference. Finally, little Zachary brought home his report card. He quietly laid it on the table, went up to his room and hit the books.. With great trepidation, his Mom looked at it and to her great surprise, little Zachary got an ‘A’ in math. She could no longer hold her curiosity. She went to his room and said, “Son, what was it? Was it the nuns?” Little Zachary looked at her and shook his head, no. “Well, then,” she replied, “Was it the books, the discipline, the structure, the uniforms? What was it already?” Little Zachary looked at her and said, “Well, on the first day of school when I saw that guy nailed to the plus sign, I knew they weren’t fooling around.” Why do Christmas trees like the past so much? Because the present’s beneath them!
