Also performing at the concert was South Korean rock band Yellow Monsters.

Best known as the lead guitarist of the American hard rock band Guns N’ Roses, Slash was *inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012. He was listed as the *runner-up in “The 10 Best Electric Guitar Players” list in Time magazine, trailing only behind Jimi Hendrix.

President Park Geun-hye and Barack Obama held a summit at the White House on May 7, exchanging talks on a decisive response to urge North Korea’s change of attitude.

Discussing President Park’s ‘*trustpolitik’ policy towards North Korea, Obama was quoted as saying, “President Park and myself very much share the view…we are not going to reward provocative behavior…but we remain open to the prospect of North Korea taking a peaceful [different] path.”

“We are going to maintain a strong *deterrent

capability” Obama said. “If [North Korea] undergoes denuclearization, [abide] by international commitments and [rejoin] the international community, [we can guarantee] a gradual progression in which both security and prosperity for the people of North Korea can be achieved.”

President Park emphasized again during the press conference that, “We will by no means, tolerate North Korea’s threats and provocations, which have recently been escalating further and that such actions only deepen North Korea’s

isolation.”

In addition, the two leaders exchanged dialogue on major issues regarding the *Korea-U. S. Nuclear Agreement revision, and wartime operational control transition.

Despite the two-year extension of the Korea-U. S. Nuclear Agreement, the two leaders agreed to conclude the agreements as soon as possible and not dwell on the extension period.

The 2013 Daedong Festival at Yonsei 연세대학교 2013 대동제

T h e Yo n s e i U n i v e r s i t y Daedong Festival is one of the most famous in Seoul, carrying on for three days, and the last ending in what is popularly called, ‘AKARAKA.’ The festivities are held every second week of May to promote school spirit and culture, boosting for a healthier college life for students. Whether the students and professors are from the College of Engineering, Music, the Political Science Department or the Life Sciences, the Festival is one of the occasions where everyone can mingle to under the banner of Yonsei.

Both the Sinchon and International Campuses will be filled with band performances, rides, drinking booths, games and food stalls. Such activities usually reflect on the humid weather, some attendees getting soaked to cool off.

After the festivities, the AKARAKA concert is held

at the Sinchon Campus *amphitheater, where many K-pop celebrities perform songs for hours. K-pop artists or groups such as Dynamic Duo, Yoon Do Hyun Band (aka YB), 4Minute, Roy Kim, Apink and Verbal Jint are rumored to perform for the 2013 AKARAKA. The *purported origin of the word ‘AKARAKA’ comes from Chinese characters meaning, “Under music, under joy, we are one,” implying the unity of Yonsei students. Another possible origin may be the word itself is from West Africa meaning, “Hand” and “Destiny,” combined as in, “Destiny is in our hands.”

The 2013 Daedong Festival will be held starting on May 13 at the International Campus, while the Sinchon Campus will begin on May 14 to 15. The AKARAKA concert will begin on May 16.

Upon his return to Korea, former presidential *spokesperson Yoon Chang-jung admitted that he touched the rear end of a young female intern.

Differing from his earlier statements at a *press conference, he said, “I was not in my underwear when a female intern came up to my hotel room.”

Yoon was *suspected of sexually harassing a 21-year-old KoreanAmerican who was hired for the meeting by the U.S. embassy.

The scope of personal information made public of sex offenders will become larger, allowing citizens to find out about someone’s electronic anklet status and sexual offence records.

The government deliberated and settled on ‘the 2013 *Implementation Agenda for the 4th Women’s Policy Basic Plan’ that contains the above on the morning of May 7, at the first Women’s Policy Revision Conference on May 17 of the new administration, chaired by Prime Minister Jung Hong-won.

Target *recipients of postal notifications will also expand to private academies, local children’s centers, and youth facilities. Previously, postal notifications only applied to householders of the district, schools, kindergartens, and nurseries. This year, a cell phone viewing service is under development and citizens can check the sex offenders’ personal information on their cellphones as early as next year.

For the economic empowerment of women, the government will install the ‘Woman Talent Academy’ in June to support empowerment and networking so that middle managers could grow to be tomorrow’s core leaders. It has also raised the criterion for women workers and managers in *affirmative action businesses from 60% to 70% and declared to announce corporations that failed to follow this criterion.

On the account of work family compatibility, the government is also modifying priority nursery admission standards so that those with actual demand, such as double-income families who

desperately need childcare, will be able to take advantage of nurseries. A plan to *departmentalize the present three evaluation grades into five or six in order to improve the quality of childcare service in nurseries is in the works.

In addition, the government will increase support for medical bills to victims and their families, improve protective facilities for the disabled until their recovery, and children sexually abused by family members will be permitted to stay in such facilities for two more years after adulthood.

To spread family-friendly work culture, the Women’s Policy Revision Conference resolved to bring relevant authorities and nongovernment experts under its umbrella and let them form and operate the ‘Gender Equality TFT’ for improvement of women’s representation and the international gender equality index, and the ‘Family-Friendly Work Culture TFT’ for work and family compatibility. Moreover, it decided to make use of women’s policy specialists placed in key ministries for creating policy agendas such as inspecting gender equality levels and reinforce interministerial collaboration.

이와 함께 성폭력 피해자와 가족에 대한 의료비 지원을 올 해 1만5000명으로 확대 지원하며 시설에서 장애인은 피해 회복시까지, 친족 성폭력 피해 아동은 성인(19세) 이후에도 2 년간 더 보호받을 수 있도록 개선한다. 이번 여성정책조정회의에서는 가족친화 직장문화 확산을 위해 향후 조정회의 산하에 여성대표성과 국제 성평등 수준 을 제고하기 위한 ‘양성평등 TFT’와 일•가정 양립문화 정착 을 위한 ‘가족친화 직장문화 확산 TFT’를 관계부처 국장 및 민간전문가 등으로 구성•운영하기로 했다. 또 주요 부처에 배치된 여성정책전담인력 등을 활용해 성평등 수준 점검 등 정책의제를 지속 발굴하고, 부처간 협업체계도 강화하기로 했다.

Forced exercise also effective for relieving anxiety and stress

‘억지 운동’도 불안·스트레스 해소 효과

It has been found that exercise is effective regardless of *voluntariness. This result was published in the European Journal of Neuroscience by a research team from the University of Colorado Boulder.

Professor Benjamin Greenwood of Boulder conducted an experiment to find out if ‘forced exercise’ is just as effective for relieving anxiety and stress as voluntary exercise.

The research team put mice in a lab designed

to enable them to move on running wheels and observed moving and unmoving mice. They then divided the moving mice into two groups and let one group exercise freely and made the other group exercise according to a fixed schedule.

Both groups exercised for the same amount of time, though under different *circumstances.

Six weeks later, the research team measured the level of anxiety and stress of the two groups. It was found that both voluntary and *compulsory groups possessed the same immunity to stress and

More people fall victim to acting academy contracts 연기·모델학원 계약 피해 증가

As more and more teenagers dream of becoming stars and sign up for acting classes and model academies, the number ofvictims to those institutions has increased as well.

The *Korea Consumer Agency reported that the number of people who received counseling service regarding acting & modeling school issues increased from 109 cases in 2010 to 127 cases last year. Especially in the first quarter of this year, the number of counseling services amounted to

68cases, an increase by 83.8% from the same period last year.

Among the damage patterns, 80.6% are due to delaying refund upon cancelling a contract, and 19.4% are *over-deducting cancellation charges for profile shooting and membership fees. 83% of the contractors were children under 7years or teenagers under 19 years old. The contract fee amounts to at least half a million won and at most, 5.6 million won.

KCA official requested that “If one is offered entertainment activities from unknown institutions, one should necessarily check with CEMA (Corea Entertainment Management Association) or local departments for its registration. One should make clear of one’s point that he or she is willing to cancel the contract by mailing to the consumer counseling center with appropriate contents attached.”.

Prosecution requests 1-year of prison labor for Kim Yong-Man 검찰, 김용만에게 징역 1년 구형

The prosecution has asked for a 1-year *prison labor term for TV personality Kim Yong-Man, who has been *charged without detention for suspicion of *illegal gambling.

At the first *hearing, which took place in the Seoul Central District Court, prosecutors said “Though Kim has confessed and reflected on his crime, we asked for 1-year of prison labor

because of large sum he spent, amounting 1.3 billion won.”

Kim’s *attorney pleaded that “My client did not a plan on gambling. He was just curious due to his enthusiasm for soccer.” He went to say, “Mr. Kim escaped his gambling activities two years ago.”

Ten years after the *demise of the Portuguese film director João César Monteiro, the Embassy of Portugal in Seoul and Seoul Art Cinema organized, from May 8 to the 30, the retrospective “João César Monteiro and his Companions,” which also marks the 11th anniversary of Seoul Art Cinema.

This will be the first opportunity for the Korean public to watch all of Monteiro’s *feature films on the big screen, in a program *complemented by works of other contemporary Portuguese directors who were close to Monteiro or shared with him some influences and aesthetical preferences: Margarida Gil, Pedro Costa, João Pedro Rodrigues, Miguel Gomes and João Tabarra. A total of 20 films will be screened throughout the month.

Plagiarism is not taken seriously in Korea 표절 인식이 부재한 한국

Korean culture emphasizes on the value of higher education, which may be the major contributing factor to the painstaking workload students across the southern peninsula must go through to enter college. And not just any college; mostly the ones in Seoul, KAIST and POSTECH are highly regarded by the middleaged parents who tend to brag about their own children attending such institutes, whether openly or discretely.

Though higher education is socially accepted as a means for success—and when I mean success, I am referring of course, to the *mainstream ideal of having a stable job at a conglomerate, law firm, public office, sciences, engineering or a doctorate position—college students tend to not be wellinformed of the consequences of plagiarism.

Allegations of plagiarism have come under fire.

For example, Moon Dae-Sung of Saha District, Busan resigned as lawmaker last year after his alma mater (Kookmin University) confirmed he plagiarized his doctoral thesis.

Yeom Dong-yeol, another lawmaker of the Saenuri Party, was also accused of plagiarism in his dissertation. In 2007, Korea University President Lee Phil-sang resigned over allegations of plagiarism.

Is Korea lacking education on plagiarism? Or is it the lack of attention given to the seriousness of simply copy-pasting?

To be more specific, plagiarism is openly practiced among students when writing their papers to hand to their professors. The professors themselves do not bother to analyze whether the work is copied from other sources without proper *bibliography. In fact, some look the other way.

“I feel that many of the professors here do not seem to enforce the policy and does not seem to take it seriously” said Hyunwoo Kim, a junior at Yonsei University. “Students can take works online and paraphrase or literally copy and paste many of the works online.”

“It is severe in Korea because many students copy seniors’ reports or projects.” Kyuho Lee of Chung-Ang University said. “Moreover, easy access of [the] internet use makes it easier than ever to copy.”

Though colleges do educate freshmen on plagiarism, it is not enough.

Mainstream high school education does not highlight on the importance of citing sources, and writing bibliography. The burden of passing the college entrance exam is far too much. So what

can we do?

For some students who attended high school overseas, it is a different story.

“In high school (American Embassy School for me) I was taught that if we get caught attempting plagiarism then we will be suspended” Lee explained.

Though colleges do educate freshmen on plagiarism and have their own regulations, it is not enough.

Kim of Yonsei said, “While I attended [the] University of Toronto for a brief amount of time, strict rules of plagiarism was enforced and was not tolerated.”

One solution to reduce plagiarism is to address students of the *consequences it has—such as ruining one’s career, to the damages it can do to one’s alma mater—by the temptations of copying and pasting whole sections of another’s work.

Professors must be trained to warn students that plagiarism will not be tolerated. Korean higher education can work on such regulations by taking foreign universities as role models.

한국문화는 고등교육의 가치를 강조하며 이는 대한민국에 서 힘들게 공부하는 학생들이 대학을 가기 위해서 꼭 거쳐야 하는 관문이다. 그냥 아무 대학이 아니다: 서울에 있는 대학 들, 카이스트 그리고 포스텍 정도가 자기 자식들이 이런 학 교를 다닌다고 자랑하고 싶어하는 중년인 부모님들이 원하 는 곳이다. 비록 고등교육이 사회에서는 성공을 위한 수단으 로 여겨지긴 하지만-여기서 성공이란 의미는 당연히 대기업, 로펌, 정부, 과학, 기계 쪽에 관련되어 있거나 박사학위를 지 니고 있음을 의미함-대학생들이 표절이 야기할 수 있는 문제 들에 대해선 잘 모르고 있는 게 사실이다. 표절의혹들이 줄을 잇고 있다. 예를 들어, 부산 사하구의 국회의원이었던 문대 성은 작년 자신의 모교(국민대학교)에서 그의 박사논문에 대 한 표절을 확정 지은 후 사임했다. 새누리당의 또 다른 국회 의원인 염동열 또한 논문표절로 고발당했다. 2007년에는 이 필상 고려대 총장이 표절의혹으로 사임한 경우도 있었다. 표 절에 대한 한국인들의 교육이 부족한 것일까? 아니면 단순한 붙여 넣기의 심각성에 대한 인식이 부족한 것일까? 구체적

으로 얘기를 하자면, 표절이란 것은 학생들이 교수들에게 과 제를 낼 때 자연스레 연습되고 있다. 교수들은 그 과제(글)들 이 제대로 된 참고문헌을 가지고 인용한 것인지에 대한 신경 을 많이 쓰지 않는다. 사실, 어떤 사람들은 다른 방식으로 보 기도 한다. 연세대 3학년에 재학 중인 김현우 씨는 “제 생각 에는 많은 교수님들이 그런 방식을 강조하지도 않고 그걸 심 각하게 생각하지도 않는 것 같다.” 라며 “학생들은 온라인에 서 작업을 하면서 인터넷 상의 많은 문서들을 다른 말로 바꾸 든지 있는 그대로 복사해서 붙여 넣는다.”라고 덧붙였다. 중 앙대에 재학중인 이규호 씨는 “많은 학생들이 선배들의 리포 트나 프로젝트를 복사해서 사용하기 때문에 한국에서는 이 게 굉장히 심각한 문제인 것 같다.” 라며 “또한 인터넷에 대 한 접근성이 좋아지면서 어느 때보다 복사하는 게 쉬워진 것 도 사실이다.” 라고 말했다. 비록 대학교에서 신입생들에게 표절에 대한 교육을 하기는 하지만 충분하지 않은 게 현실이 다. 주된 고등교육은 출처를 써놓고 참고문헌을 적어 넣는 것 의 중요성을 강조하고 있지 않다. 대학교를 가기 위해 시험

Travis is in the building! This is the first column I am writing after I got back to Korea. It is always great to be back to see family and friends even if I do see them every six months. Just like anyone who lives away from family, coming home and having no one waiting for you or greeting you can be quite exhausting and lonesome. I have been living away from my family for over 10 years. I was a gregarious kid, so I didn’t mind being alone for my first couple of years, but the longer I stay away it seems like I always have this void in my heart.

It feels like something that can’t be filled by being around friends or partying, an itch that can’t be scratched, a longing that can’t be satiated. The only reason I can talk about this is because I am actually feeling better and have realized how important family can be. When you are living with your family, you might be annoyed by some of them or feel that your freedom is compromised, but I’m telling you!

Don’t take them for granted! They are the only haven you can have. I guess this is why people get married and have children, since it’s the most important social group you will ever have. I have been getting wedding invitations more frequently these days and the more I see people get married, it makes me wonder what kind of woman I will marry and what kind of husband/father I am going to be. I guess it’s just me growing older and thinking out loud, but I’m sure all the single ladies and gents would have felt the same way.

Who am I going to marry? What am I going to do for a living? Besides being all caught up on the future,

why don’t we all go home and give our appreciation to our family who has been always there for us.

Enjoy. 안녕하십니까? 한국에 돌아온 이후에 처음 쓰는 기사입니다. 간만에 친구와 가족들을 만나는 건 언제나 좋은 일 같습니다. 누구나 그렇겠지만 가족과 떨어져서 살고 혼자 사는 사람들은 외로움을 느낄 거라고 생각합니다. 집에 돌아왔는데, 기다려주거나 반겨주는 사 람 하나 없는 삶은 결코 쉽지 않을 거라는 것 을 잘 알고 있습니다. 저 또한 부모님과 떨어 져 산지가 10년이 넘어가는데요, 어렸을 때 는 사교적인 성격에 친구도 많이 사귀어서 못 느꼈지만 나이를 하나 둘씩 먹어가며 마 음속의 공허함이 점점 느껴진답니다. 지금 에서야 이런 진솔할 이야기를 할 수 있는 것 도, 지금이나마 가족과 오랜 친구들과 함께 할 수 있어서 많이 호전된 모습이기 망정이 지, 미국에서 이런 글을 썼으면 더 쓸쓸했을 거란 생각도 듭니다. 물론 가족과있으면 불 편도 있고 자유가 더 적을 순 있으나, 가족은 그 누구보다도 중요합니다! 절대 과소평가하 지 마세요! 사실 그래서 요즘 “아, 이래서 사 람들이 결혼을 하는구나” 라는 생각도 듭니 다. 모든 사회적인 조직에서 가족이 가장 기 본이 되니까요. 요즘 청첩장도 많이 받고 결 혼식에도 자주 참석하게 되는데요, 보면 볼 수록 남의 일 같지 않아 고민에 빠지게 됩니 다. “누구와 결혼을 할 것이며, 나는 어떤 남 편/아버지가 될까?” 제가 슬슬 결혼 적령기 가 되서 그러는 건지 몰라도, 모든 싱글 남녀 들은 비슷한 생각을 한번쯤은 해봤을 거라 믿습니다. “나는 무엇을 하고 누구와 살 것인 가?” 젊은 사람들의 가장 큰 두 이슈이지만, 가끔은 갑갑한 미래 보다는 지금 나에게 주 어진 것들을 돌아보는 시간도 필요한 것 같 습니다. 그래서 이번 주는 그런 수수한 느낌 의 노래를 한번 모아봤습니다. 오월은 가족 의 달이니 모두 집으로 가서 가족들에게 사 랑을 전합시다.

The 6th Seongbuk Global Food Festival 제6회 성북 다문화 음식 축제

39 embassies, exchange students from 8 universities, *multicultural families and *indigenous families *collaborated to celebrate the “6th Seongbuk Global Food Festival,” organized by the Seongbuk District Office and supervised by the Seongbuk Foundation for Arts and Culture, and ‘Nurimasil’ on May 12.

Attending the festival were some 15,000 people.

‘Nurimasil’ means ‘a festival where the world comes together.’ A total of 49 teams from 26 countries participated to sell traditional food, provide hands-on

During the opening ceremony, renowned singer Insooni was awarded a certificate of appointment as Honorary Multicultural Library Director.

Seongbuk District resident Moon Ok-ju, aged 39, said, “This is my third consecutive year of visiting the Seongbuk Global Food Festival. I enjoy it because diverse food is provided at a single place. I hope to keep visiting festivals like this in the future.”

6회째를 맞이한 이번 축제는 성북구청에서 주최하고 성북문화재단과 누리마실친구들이 주관한 가운데 39개 대사관, 8개 대학교의 교 환학생, 다문화 가정, 그리고 선주민 가정의 참여 속에 이뤄졌다. ‘누리마실’은 ‘온 세상이 모이는 축제’라는 뜻을 가졌다. 취지에 맞게 총 26개국 49개 팀

이 먹거리와 볼거리, 그리고 체험거리를 제공 하기 위해 참가했다. 한편 개막식 때 가수 인순이는 다문화도서 명예관장으로 임명장을 수여했다. 축제에 참가한 성북구민 문옥주씨(30)는 “다양한 음식들을 한자리에서 접할 수 있기에 다문화축제에 3년째 찾아오고 있다. 앞으로 도 이런 축제가 계속 이어졌으면 좋겠다”라고 말했다.

Continuing the relationship 관계의 지속

People meet someone while walking down the street or working in the office. They start to think about the continuous relationship when *coincidence ties them. Like this, often times, love starts without calculation. People encounter parting after that kind of love. At that moment, some people want to remain as a friend, while some wants to ultimately *cut off the relationship. I am personally on the side of the former. Factors like whom you met, how long that relationship was, how deep that love was and etc are not important.

Because we cannot deny the fact that he/she was once the most important person to your life. It is clear that people have to acknowledge the reality, where the relationship in the name of love has ended.

But, it is uncertain that whether this fact can be the justification of clearing the personal relationship as a whole. Separation indirectly means erasing the time and moment with that person, it’s really a scary thing.

One after another, people get into the relationship. As there is a saying that love is forgetted by love, past emotions of the people *die down as time goes by. It is lucky thing when a person once was the closest to you is remaining as a friend in the absence of emotion. As that person is the one who can provide you with the most appropriate and realistic advice when you are meeting the next person.

If one can contact him/her without any *hesitation in the presence of good news or bad news, it’s enough. After parting, it is reasonable for people to cut the connection and *keep the distance for a while. But, at that moment, total eradication of a person from one’s *boundary seems incorrect. We lost lots of thing, when we tried to confront once an important person like an unknown. Therefore, continuity of relationship after parting is needed for a degree. But, there exists exception. When opponent does not want to maintain a relationship like that, all things that I have mentioned above turns out to be *meaningless.

사람들은 누군가를 만난다. 그게 길 거리를 걷는 도중이 될 수도 있고, 같 이 일을 하는 도중일 수도 있다. 우연 이 인연이 된다면 그들은 지속적인 만 남을 원하기 시작한다. 연애는 그렇게 계산적이지 않게 시작될 때가 많다. 그 런 한 번의 연애가 끝나면 사람들은 이 별을 맞이한다. 그 순간, 어떤 사람들 은 편안한 친구 관계로 남기를 원하고, 또 어떤 사람들은 영영 남남이 되는 걸 원한다. 나는 개인적으로 전자를 선택 하는 게 맞다 생각한다. 누구를 만났 든, 그 지속기간이 얼마나 되었든, 사 랑의 깊이가 얼마나 되든, 그건 중요 한 요소가 아니다. 그 사람이 잠깐이나 마 내 인생에서 가장 소중한 사람이었 다는 사실은 부인할 수 없기 때문이다. 헤어짐, 그리고 연인으로서의 인연이 끝났다는 건 인정해야 함이 분명하다. 하지만, 그게 인간관계의 정리를 정당 화하는 명분이 되는지는 불분명하다. 남남이 된다는 건 간접적으로 그 사람 과의 시간, 순간들을 지워버린다는 뜻 인데, 그건 참 무서운 것이다. 사람에게는 한 번의 인연 다음에 또 다른 인연이 찾아온다. 사랑은 또 다른 사랑으로 잊어버리라는 말이 있듯, 차 츰 과거의 감정은 사그러드는 것이 사 람이다. 나와 한 때 가장 가까웠던 사 람이 이성적인 감정은 배제된 채 편 한 친구로 남아있다는 것은 행운이라 고 생각을 한다. 다음 사람을 만나는 데 가장 현명한, 현실적인 조언을 해 줄 수 있는 게 바로 그 사람이기 때문이다. 좋은 일이든 나쁜 일이든, 가끔 생 각날 때 거리낌없이 연락할 수 있다는 것, 그 정도면 충분하다. 이별 후, 잠시 그 사람과의 거리를 두고 연락을 끊는 건 당연하다고 생각한다. 하지만, 그 순간, 나란 사람의 울타리 안에서 그 사람을 완전히 빼버린 다는 것은 옳지 않은 선택이다. 소중했던 사람을 모르는 사람처럼 대하는 순간, 많은 것을 잃 는다. 그렇기에, 이별 뒤의 적당한 관계지속은 필요하다고 생각한다. 하지만, 예외상황은 있다. 상대방이 그런 관계를 원치 않는 순간, 위에서 언급한 모든 말은 무의미해진다. yh961407@hotmail.com

6개월 째인 이**씨, ESL 건물 밖으로만 나가서 영어로 대화 할 때면 항상 혀가 경직되고 앞이 깜깜해 지면서 말이 잘 안 나옵니다. 미국 유학 2 어학연수 년차인 늦깎이 유학생 김**씨, 토론 중심의 수업의 경우에 항상 꿀먹은 벙어리가 됩니다. 대기업 직장인 박**씨, 업무와 관련하여 외국기업체의 직원과 의 영어로의 전화 통화가 두려워 항상 이메일로만 연락을 주고 받습니다. 이 세분들 모두 그동안 꾸준히 영어공부를 열심히 하신 분들 입니다. 하지만 머리 속 에 생각하고 있는 말들을 적절한 순간에 적절한 영어표현을 사용하여 입 밖으로 내보내기가 쉽지가 않다고 이구동성으로 하소연들을 하십니다. 도대체 이분 들 모두 왜 영어로 말하기가 잘 안 되는 걸까요? 외국 유학 및 기업의 신입사원 채용 시 영어 말하기 능력이 중요시되고 IBT TOEFL, TOEIC, OPIC 등의 영어 능력 평가에서 말하기 능력이 중시 되면서 자 연스레 영어 스피킹 능력 개발이 점점 큰 화두가 되어가고 있습니다. 하지만 영어 스피킹 학습에 관심은 많지만 막상 시작하려니 도대체 어디서부터 어떻게 해 야 할 지 감이 잘 안 잡히시는 분들이 많으실 텐데요. 지금부터 저 Kevin과 함께 효과적인 영어 회화/스피킹 학습법에 대하여 알아보겠습니다.

영어 스피킹이 리딩, 라이팅, 리스닝 보다 어려운 이유 한나라의 언어를 학습하려면 일반적으로 어휘, 문법, 발음 및 그 나라의 문화적 차이를 고루고루 학습하고 이해해야 합니다. 리딩과 라이팅 능력의 경우 이 네 가지 중 어휘와 문법학습이 무 엇보다도 중요하죠. 하지만 리스닝과 스피킹 능력의 경우 발음이 가장 중요한 영향을 미치게 되고, 거기에 어휘와 문법의 기초 지식이 있어야 제대로 알아듣고 원하는 데로 영어로 표현 할 수 있습니다. 또한 스피킹의 경우에는 제한된 시간 내에 상대방의 문화적 차이까지도 고려하면서 적절한 타이밍에 적절한 표현을 써야 하기 때문에 가장 힘들 수 밖에 없습니다.

왜 영어로 대화 시에 원하는 말을 못하고 망설이게 되는 걸까요?

1. 부정확한 영어발음 정확한 영어발음의 사용은 여러분이 영어로 대화시에 자신감을 불어 넣어주고 영어로 표현을 할 때 명료도를 향 상시켜 줌으로서 효과적인 영어스피킹을 가능케 해줍니다. “scratched”, “ski board”, “aloe”, “theme”, “entrée”, “suite”, “aisle”. “coyote” 등의 단어들을 한국어식으로 발음하게 되면 외국인들이 무슨 여러분들이 무슨 말을 하는 지 전혀 알아 들을 수가 없습니다. 가장 큰 원인은 우 리말과 영어의 소리체계의 차이 때문입니다. 이러한 소리 체계의 차이를 이해하게 되면 보다 더 효과적으로 영어 스피킹을 하실 수 있을 겁니다.

2. 어휘 선택의 실수 실제 일상 회화시에 사람들은 자기가 알고 있는 단어전체의 20% 정도만을 사용한다고 합니다. 미국 대학생의 평 균 단어능력이 10,000여 단어라고 하니 보통 성인이면 2,000여 단어의 가장 일반적으로 사용되는 단어를 주로 사 용하는 셈이죠.

TOEFL, TOEIC, TEPS 등 시험 중심의 영어 공부에 익숙해져 있는 대부분의 우리나라 영어 학습자 들은 어휘 전 반에 대한 지식은 상당한 편이지만 단어의 사전적인 의미 자체에 치중하는 경향이 크고 또한 어떤 단어가 일상생 활에서 가장 유용하게 사용되는지, 그리고 같은 의미의 단어라도 각 단어들이 어떠한 뉘앙스의 차이가 있는지 이 해하는데 많은 어려움을 느끼죠. 한 예로 미국에서 수많은 한국학생들이 “진짜” 라는 의미로 표현할 때 “original”을 쓰는 경우를 많이 봐왔습니다. 실제 “original”이라는 단어는 원시의, 시 초의 라는 의미로 주로 사용되기 때문에 “genuine” 또는 “authentic” 같은 단어를 사용해야 정확한 표현이 됩니다. 영어 스피킹을 잘하고 싶으신 분들은 실제 미국에서 가장 많이 사용하는 2,000여 단어들의 정확한 의미와 각 단어의 정확한 뉘앙스를 먼저 학습하시는 게 효과적입니다.

가장 대표적인 경우가 영어로 말할 때 제대로 된 문장을 잘 만들지 못하고 단어 하나 하 나만을 언급하시는 분들입니다. 영어 스피킹의 기본은 여러분의 의사를 정확하고 간결하 게 전달하는 것입니다. 그렇기 때문에 영문법의 기초라고 할 수 있는 영어의 8품사 및 구 와 절(문장의 5가지 형식) 정도만 확실하게 이해하셔도 간결하고 적절한 표현을 효과적 으로 만드실 수 있습니다.

문화의 차이는 어느 나라든지 존재합니다. 우리나라와 달리 영어권 국가에서는 남이 보는 앞에서 트림을 하는 것은 아주 큰 결례로 봅니다. 우리나라에서는 다른 나라보다 나이의 차 이가 사회적으로 아주 중요해서 비슷한 연령대이더라도 반말로 이름을 부르면 큰 결례가 되 죠. 그렇기 때문에 손자가 할아버지의 이름을 반말로 부르는 영어권 국가들의 사람들은 어느 연령대 어느 상황에서는 격이 없는 표현을 사용한다고 오해를 하시는 분들이 많은데요.

한문장안에 주절 이외에 다양한 종속절(관계절, 부사절 등)이 포함된 복잡한 구조의 문 장의 표현은 정확한 의미 전달에 지장을 줄 수 있기 때문에 회화/스피킹시에는 가급적 삼 가시는 것이 좋습니다. 또한 우리나라 사람들이 많이 하는 실수로 “~ 하는 것은 어때” 라 는 제안의 표현으로 “had better~”를 사용하는 경우를 많이 봤는데요. 사실 문법에서 제 안을 할 때 이야기하는 “had better~” 라는 표현에는 “이렇게 하지 않으면 안좋을 텐데” 라는 권고의 뉘앙스가 있어서 잘못 사용하면 듣는 이가 오해를 하거나 거부감을 느낄 수 도 있습니다. “should”나 “I would suggest” 같은 표현들이 좀더 부드러운 제안이 되겠 죠. 이러한 표현들의 정확한 의미를 이해하시고 사용해야 듣는 이가 오해하지 않겠죠?
