Last week, universities in Korea underwent the most dynamic week of festivals.

Around this time of year, schools compete to hold the best festival with the trendiest* lineup of celebrities to raise the spirits of their students after a vigorous* week of midterms.

A number of factors determined the past week as the ‘chosen week.’

Apart from midterms being over, it was also the end of Korea’s spring, which has the shortest span among all seasons in the peninsula* right before the heat of the summer and the rainy season approach.

Popular celebrities were able to travel from college to college. Among others, hip-hop duo LeeSsang performed in numerous universities

on a single day, ranging from Hongik University to Kyung Hee University.

Street vendors* and one night pubs were set up all over college campuses.

The proceeds went to the respective funding for student councils and organizations.

Intoxicated students passed out on the grass. Friends flagged down taxis for those that passed out.

There have been movements to put a halt to the drinking culture in universities.

Some universities, such as Sejong University, put drinking on campus during the festival to a vote. Still, the majority determined that college festivals should require alcohol.

Decline in marriage of unemployed for fifth year in a row “백수면 결혼 안해”... 무직자 결혼률 5년째 하향새

Marriage rate of the unemployed has reached an all-time low.

Last year, people who married ‘unemployed, as house workers or students (including non-students)’ increased 8.6% for women from 102,025 to 128,426. On the other hand, men dropped by 2.6% (500 men) to 108,731.

According to Statistics Korea (KOSTAT), 39.3% of women married being unemployed compared to 5.7% of men who

married unemployed. The ratio of unemployed marriage for both genders has fallen dramatically.

Since 2008, the rate has steadily dropped from 47.3% and dramatically fell from 42.7% to 39.3% last year. The same case was for men, but far less (6.8% to 5.7% from 2008 to 2012).

Lee Jae-won, head of the Vital Statistics Division at KOSTAT, said, “People were able to marry early as employment applicants in the past,

focusing on each other’s future. As people are tending to marry later, they choose to delay it further, finding they do not have the right economic or financial conditions.”

The average age for first marriages has been increasing since 1990, being 27.79 for males and 24.78 for females at the time. Last year’s average was 29.4 for women and 32.1 for men. Seoul women especially reached an all-time high at 30.2, reaching the 30s range for

the first time.

Increased women’s preference for dual income families* rather than becoming homemakers is another factor. The employment rate for women aged between 25 and 29 was 53.7% in 2000, sharply rising last year to 68.0%. Women between 30 and 39 also rose to 54.5% from 52.5%.

를 보고 결혼할 수 있었지만, 초혼 연령이 늦 어지면서 경제적 여건이 갖춰지지 않으면 결 혼을 하지 않는 경향이 보인다"고 해석했다. 초혼 평균연령은 90년(남자 27.79세, 여자 24.78세) 이후 매년 높아지고 있다. 지난해 초 혼 평균 연령은 여자가 29.4세, 남자는 32.1세 였다. 특히 서울지역 여성의 초혼 연령은 30.2 살을 기록해 처음으로 30세를 넘었다.

전업주부가 되기보다는 맞벌이를 선택하 는 여성들이 늘어난 것도 원인이다. 25~29세 여성의 고용률은 2000년 53.7%에서 지난해 68.0%로 부쩍 높아졌고, 30~39세 여성의 고 용률도 52.5%에서 54.5%로 높아졌다.

The average age of first-time home owners was found to be at age 41.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transportation revealed such results on May 13, based on a 2012 survey of the residential condition* of 33,000 households conducted* nationally from June to August, 2012.

According to the Ministry, the average age is 40.9, which is 2.5 years more than 2010, averaging 38.4. The percentage of respondents* who replied that ‘homeownership is a must’ also decreased 10.9% from 87.7% to 72.8% in 2010.

that times were hard, but the survey results are gloomy,” “Has the average age of first-time home owners gone down because of the decrease of people who think home ownership is necessary” and “Just hearing about this is exhausting.”

Korean Air is opening a ‘Haneul Sarang’ English classroom which teaches practical English to 30 or more students of Yong-yoo Elementary School nearby Incheon International Airport, from June 16 to 19, 10 classes for 6 weeks. The ‘Haneul Sarang’ English classroom is a volunteer service, which took place since 2008 for social contributions*.

This time, English classroom

designated the elementary school nearby the airport, where afterschool extracurricular activities are difficult.

Korean Air gave them opportunities to indirectly experience every-day English and an overseas trip at the same time. The company has chosen six employees all whom speak fluent English.

Angelina Jolie reveals her mastectomy 안젤리나 졸리, 유방 절제 고백…“세 아이 위한 선택”

Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie revealed that she has undergone a double mastectomy. She wrote in an opinion piece named, “My Medical Choice” in the New York Times that she had taken such a surgery last February.

“My mother fought cancer for almost a decade and I didn’t want the same thing to happen to me…I made such a decision to minimize the risk of breast cancer,” Jolie said.

Because of a gene called BRCA1, she had an 87% risk of breast cancer, but has dropped to 5% after the surgery.

Exhibition for Polish children’s book illustrations 폴란드 현대 어린이 책 일러스트레이션 전 The National Library for Children and Young Adults in Korea and the Polish Embassy are introducing Polish children's book illustrations, renowned* for being experimental and creative.

Famous young artists who have awarded many prizes such as the Bologna Ragazzi Award and the European Design Award, have selected their most fresh and beautiful artwork for this exhibition*.

Poland is a country that demonstrates the most innovative* illustrations and book design for children's books. Many works have been published regarding modern interpretation of traditional graphic design and illustrations of the socialist era, active since the 2000s.

Sixty-seven illustrations, 96 Polish and Korean books and cultural artifacts are displayed at the exhibition. Afterwards, all Polish children’s books will be donated to the Archives* of the National Library for Children and Young Adults.

To stamp out discrimination against defectors 탈북자들에 대한 차별근절

It is a fact that before and after the 1953 War, this land—that is taking the world by storm through the Korean Wave—was once so impoverished than the North itself at the time, and perhaps was comparable to a few African countries. We have Ethiopia to thank for, for being our allies during the bloody years.’

1953년 전쟁을 전후로 이 나라가(한류로 세계를 흔들고 있 는) 북한보다 가난한 나라였고 아프리 카 국가들과 비교될 정도였다는 건 사실이다. 그런 힘든 시절에 우리의 동맹국이 되어준 에티오 피아에 감사를 해야 할 것이다.

The North had plenty of economic benefits thanks to the Soviet giant that almost went head to head against American might in Cuba during 1962. 북한은 1962년 쿠바위기 때 거의 미국과 비등하게 거대해 진 소련으로 인해서 엄청난 경제적 혜택을 받았었다.

Now, as we hear PSY’s latest song, ‘Gentleman,’ read about the recent sexual harassment scandal by the Blue House’s spokesperson and watch ‘variety’ TV shows, all the while being threatened by the North’s young (also, another overweight) leader with nukes… 이제 우리는 싸이의 최신 노래인 ‘젠틀맨’을 들으며, 청와 대 대변인의 성희롱사건을 읽으며, ‘다양한(버라이어티)’ TV 프로그램들을 보고 있다. 비록, 동시에 북한의 젊은 지도자 에게 핵으로 위협을 받고 있지만 말이다.

When looking at the numbers, this mountainous slab of land has become one of the largest economies in the world (however, the CIA Factbook has lowered the rank to 15th last year). 숫자로만 보자면, 이 거대한 땅덩어리는 세계에서 가장 큰 경제력을 가진 나라 중 하나가 되었다. (그러나, 지난해 CIA 페이스북은 순위를 15위로 낮췄다)

Unfortunately, it is the rapid development that is so-called, ‘Miracle on the Han River’ that likely contributed to the slagging social development in one sector that we must fix ourselves: discrimination towards North Korean defectors. 불행히도, 소위 ‘한강의 기적’이라고 불리는 급격한 발전은 우리가 꼭 고쳐야 하는 사회발전을 야기했고 그건 바로 북한 탈북자들에 대한 차별이다.

If both the northern and southern governments agree that the Korean people are one—which is also widely accepted by the citizens themselves— then why is there so much prejudice* and ostracizing of our fellow Koreans? 만약 북한정부와 남한정부가 동시에 한국사람들은 하나라 는 사실에 동의한다면 (시민들도 당연히 동의한다는 전제로) 왜 같은 한국인들에게 막대한 차별과 배척이 난무하는 것일 까?

Especially in schools where North-Koreandefector students have difficulty adjusting to the social norms and behavior, we are not doing enough to fully accompany them to the freedoms they are so grateful for.

Such discrimination indicates the lack of embracement and understanding of these defectors. The government is doing sufficiently to aid the defectors to adapt and start a new life in the South.

Children of North Korean defectors deal with bullying and isolation, due to cultural differences and their backgrounds. 7% of children drop out.

Yes, many Koreans face their own problems, struggling to put food on the table, struggling to put their children through school and eventually, college, struggling to make a profit. But if our fellow Koreans are discriminated against, is that not the most counter-productive?

북한탈북자 학생들이 특히나 사회적인 규범과 행동에 적응 하기 힘들어하는 학교라는 공간에서, 우리는 그들이 정말로 필요로 하는 자유라는 것에 다가갈 수 있게 충분한 도움을 주 지 않고 있다.

문화적 차이와 그들의 배경들로 인해서 북한탈북자들의 아 이들은 괴롭힘을 견뎌야 하며 왕따를 당한다. 그 중 7%의 아 이들은 학교를 그만둔다.

Defectors who attend universities also have difficulty with their academics. According to lawmaker Hong Jung-wook of the National Assembly Committee for Foreign Affairs, Trade and Unification, “135 out of 475 North Korean students who admitted to Konkuk, Dankook, Sogang, Seoul National, Sungshin Women's, Soongsil, Chung-Ang, Korea National Open, and Hanyang universities and Hankuk University of Foreign Studies dropped out.” (The Chosun Ilbo, 2010)

대학교에 진학하고 있는 탈북자들도 학업을 정상적으로 유 지하는 데 어려움을 겪는 실정이다. 외교통상통일위원회 홍 정욱 위원은 “건국대, 단국대, 서강대, 서울대, 성신여대, 숭 실대, 중앙대, 고려대, 한양대, 한국외대에 합격한 475명의 북한 학생들 중 135명이 진학을 포기했다.”고 밝혔다(조선일 보, 2010)

Their fear of English and the special admission channel that limits their major selection are the two primary reasons for their dropout. 영어에 대한 두려움과 그들의 전공선택을 제한하는 특수한

입학절차가 그들이 중퇴하는 2가지 주된 이유였다.

The government is doing sufficiently to aid the defectors to adapt and start a new life in the South.

The training program at the Hanawon Center, which is designed for defectors to know the ways of southern society, is government-funded. Once the defectors are deemed ready, the government provides them with 3 million won in cash, and a rented flat. Sufficient yes, but not enough.

정부는 이 나라에서 탈북자들이 적응하는 걸 도와주고 새 로운 삶을 영위할 수 있도록 충분한 지원을 하고 있는 상황이 다. 탈북자들이 남쪽 사회를 이해할 수 있도록 만들어진 하 나원의 트레이닝 프로그램은 정부지원을 받고 있다. 탈북자 들이 어느 정도 준비되었다고 생각되면, 정부는 현금 300만 원과 임대아파트를 제공해준다. 괜찮다고 생각은 되지만 충 분하다고 할 수는 없는 실정이다.

이런 차별은 탈북자들에 대한 이해와 포옹이 얼마나 부족 한 지 보여주는 척도가 되고 있다. 정부는 탈북자들이 남한 에서 적응하고 새로운 삶을 살아가는데 충분한 도움을 주고 있다.

그렇다, 많은 한국 사람들은 자기자신들과 싸우고 있다. 식 탁에 음식을 올리려고, 아이들을 학교에 보내며 궁극적으로 대학에 보내려고, 이익을 만들려고 최선을 다하고 있다. 하 지만, 만약 우리와 같은 한국인들이 차별을 당하고 있다면, 이게 가장 큰 역효과를 만들고 있는 건 아닐까?

What we need is to have proper education on not just tolerance. We need to do away with the homogeneity that is so prevalent in Korea.

Specifically, we must do away with the thought process of our country being homogeneous. 우리에게 필요한 건 단순히 관용에 대한 게 아닌 진정한 교 육을 받는 것이다. 우리는 한국에서 너무나 일반적으로 퍼져 있는 동질성에 대한 생각을 버려야 한다. 구체적으로, 우리 나라가 균등하다고 인식하는 생각의 방식을 버려야 한다.

That is not to say that Korean homogeneity is wrong per se. If Korea is to become a developed nation and be acclaimed* by the international community, such problems must be fixed from the inside. 한국의 동질성이 잘못되었다고 말하는 것은 아니다. 만약 한국이 더욱 발전하고 국제사회에서 인정을 받고 싶다면, 이 런 문제들이 안에서부터 고쳐져야 한다는 뜻이다.

It is sad to note that South Koreans have a reputation for deep racism. Even towards defectors, our homogeneity is not only based on race, but more on cultural background. A North Korean defector is out casted for his/her lack of adjustment and understanding of contemporary culture and society, not for his/her blood.

남한 사람들이 인종차별을 한다고 알려져 있는 것은 참으 로 유감스러운 일이다. 탈북자들한테도, 우리의 동질성은 인 종을 기반으로 한 것이 아닌 문화적 배경을 기반으로 하고 있 다. 북한 탈북자들은 그/그녀의 혈통이 아닌 문화와 사회에 대한 그/그녀의 적응과 이해의 부족으로 따돌림 당하고 있는 것이다.

This must stop.

How ya’ll doing? It’s getting hot these days and we can feel that summer is already on its way.

Summer always gives us energy and a vibrant vibe. It also makes all the lazy ones come out of their comfort zones to enjoy the outside. I always wished it was summer all year around, but I figured if it was warm all the time, you wouldn’t appreciate it as much. A person who lives in cold areas can go places warm to enjoy it, but others who live in warm climates don’t adapt to cold weathers that well. This is why I’ve decided to live in a place where there are all four seasons; to mix things up and make going on vacation even more enticing. 안녕하십니까? 더워지는 걸 보니 여름이 다가오는 걸 몸소 느낄 수 있는 것 같습니다. 여름은 언제나 역동적인 느낌과 충만한 에너 지를 주는데, 겨우내 집에 틀어박혀있던 게 으름뱅이들도 밖에 나오게 되지요. 일년 내 내 여름이었으면 하는 바람도 있었지만, 늘 덥고 따뜻하면 그만큼 여름을 반기지 않았겠 지요? 추운 지방에 사는 사람이 더운 지방으 로 갈 순 있어도, 더운 지방에 있던 사람들은 추운 지방에 적응을 잘 못하더군요. 저는 그 래서 나중에라도 사계절이 뚜렷한 곳에서 살 기로 결정했답니다. 계절도 골고루 느끼고 휴가 가는 것 또한 더 특별할 테니까요.

Summer is probably one the most celebrated seasons of the year and many people like to hit the clubs or bars for entertainment. I also like to go to clubs to enjoy the music and meet new people. But in Korea all the high end clubs are electronic clubs. This is kind of sad for me in a way, because I can’t enjoy the music as much because electronic music just doesn’t cut it for me. I understand the beat makes you want to move and the climax just makes your heart rush, but it leaves no

memories. I never remember what kind of song was on when I was having fun. But when it comes to hip-hop songs, I always remember which one I sang along to, and laughed with friends. So when I feel nostalgic, I go and listen to it again. My buddies and I often use quotes from lyrics just to spice up conversations and we always have a blast. And believe it or not! I have a song related to every girl I ever dated! So if ever one of the songs is played, it triggers my brain and brings back old priceless memories.

Artists put a lot of time and effort in giving you a message in their songs.

So whether they are shallow or deep, it’s still worth listening to. So this week’s playlist has some songs I would like to hear in a club. I know my homies and I would enjoy every second of it. Peace.

The nuclear question: why a nuclear-armed South Korea is a nonstarter 핵으로 국민단합하자는 모순된 논리에 대하여

One can only marvel at the leaps and turns that define the consensus of the far rightward fragment of South Korean political discourse, sometimes found to be bucking* their own interior logic to maintain their parochial* self-interest cavorting as nationalistic patriotism.

It is also, to put it mildly, alarming; for the advocates of nuclear arms are hardly fringe elements. They count among their ranks personages and institutions as influential as Chung Mong-joon, Hyundai scion, New Frontier Party heavyweight and chairman of Asan Institute; leading columnist Cho Gap-je; and the Chosun Ilbo itself. Driving public debate with a view to stoking* nationalist sentiments, their arguments go something like this: Seoul already possesses the means to build nukes, as well as harness the requisite* uranium and nuclear fuel; Seoul needs credible deterrence against nuclear North Korea; Seoul can always abandon said deterrence once nuclear North Korea disarms (how and why the North would disarm faced with such a development, not to mention how the South would manage to build enough mutual confidence to convince Pyongyang of the veracity of such an intention is unclear); therefore, Seoul needs to pull out of various international commitments and constraints such as the Treaty on the NonProliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) and even a bilateral nuclear agreement with the U.S. (an ally usually so imposing that renegotiating even a free trade agreement could not be countenanced hitherto); draw from Seoul’s already impressive diplomatic capital (the U.N. Secretary-General is our native son after all) and persuade the world that (1) since it failed in deterring Pyongyang from going nuclear, it is only right that we take matters into our own hands, and (2) that we are somehow not to be classed in the august* company of global luminary* states viz. apartheid-era South Africa, Israel, Pakistan, pre-Bush India and Pyongyang; draw legitimacy for the program (and create a welcome distraction from other minor irritants such as governmental ineptitude, lackluster welfare, and corruption) from public consensus; and build up national morale and stature by embarking on such a bold and independent endeavor, even if we are to expect a little pain (the economy, national prestige, isolation—small change) for our troubles - sound familiar?

Hardly. It seems that the utility of the U.S. nuclear umbrella, which sufficed the Free World in the darkest days of the Cold War, has, after over half a century, expired on the Korean peninsula, so that we do not bat an eyelid at the thought of acquiring weapons capable of obliterating our very way of life. We can now sit with Washington as equals, having successfully hosted the G20 Summit and the 2012 Nuclear Security Summit (my emphasis) – the latter the brainchild of a *bucking: 저항하다, 책임을 전가하다 *parochial: 지방적인 *stoking: 돋우다

president who wrote forcefully for worldwide nuclear disarmament in his youth – and challenge our longstanding bilateral agreement prohibiting nuclear reprocessing. Our fledgling* domestic nuclear industry, so impressive that it attracts cash-flush Middle Eastern clients known for their scientific and technological prowess (the U.A.E. for one) has apparently gained such maturity and self-sufficiency that it can withstand U.S. withholding of nuclear fuel and related supplies as well as censure* from the Nuclear Suppliers Group of the International Atomic Energy Agency or IAEA (I suppose it can only help that its current Director General is Japanese), perhaps in the confidence that we can always mine our indigenous natural deposits of the yellow stuff – that is, when they are discovered. Our nuclear might would certainly convince Pyongyang that its efforts were in vain and not, say, actually compel them to expand their currently meager and relatively primitive arsenal from the resulting disparity because as we know, Pyongyang has been most amenable* to militaristic saber-rattling and displays of force; it is clear that they resorted to building atomic bombs out of an unshakeable sense of security. Also, a nuclear-armed South Korea in a neighborhood already bristling* with atomic powers—China, Russia, and on-the-brink Japan—would be a reassuring presence and a harmonizer, and perhaps our neighbors might consider our “regional balancer” doctrines and rhetoric a lot less hostilely this time. To give you some context, four in ten Japanese are concerned about a military threat to them from Seoul according to a Gallup poll. And there can be no doubt about the consistency of our message to our friends in Washington; we do not want to transfer wartime operational command because we are all too aware of our strategic limitations and not ready to be independent on that front, but there is no question we do not want, as Mr. Cho Gapje claims, “the life of a slave” and hence are more than ready to add ourselves to a club exclusively composed of states who are singularly capable of self-reliant defense, and none of whom are dependent on another for their own security.

We risk stunting our civil nuclear capacities and technologies, and given the spate of forecasts about energy shortages and potentially even blackouts, fueled by industrial demand, we can scarce afford compromising our standards and progress at this juncture. We endanger what little credibility we may claim at present, as an honest broker and respected middle power to the region and the international community. It is not just a question of dodging a few wayward sanctions hurled our way. The U.S. has endorsed India’s status and even Pakistan’s (the latter conveniently aided by the opportune tragedy of 9/11), so South Korea will not, in fairness, be destined for the

role of international pariah. But it speaks to our collective complacency if we consider ourselves on a par with the likes of the U.K. and France— not even they escaped worldwide condemnation when De Gaulle tested the bomb in 1960. It is no secret that we are heavily reliant on the U.S. for strategic conventional arms and efficient force deployment. Haggling over the allowed range of our ballistic missiles with Washington is a regular feature of our alliance, the occasional easing and extension seen as diplomatic coups. Negotiating a new nuclear deal with them to secure rights to a full nuclear fuel cycle, especially when the U.S. has been persistently advancing the gold standard—a binding ban on nuclear enrichment and reprocessing—would not be easy. Doubtless Mr. Chung Mong-joon had this in mind when he fearlessly made the case for Seoul’s departure from the NPT as a precursor to nuclear armament at the Carnegie International Nuclear Policy Conference in Washington D.C. in April, the best possible venue for such a noble announcement.

Rather than actively mull relegating Seoul to the world’s gallery of rogue states (for who in good conscience can consider a state possessive of such destructive power to be anything but?) let us reflect on the words of Kim Gu. “I want our nation to be the most beautiful in the world.

By this I do not mean the most powerful nation.

Because I have felt the pain of being invaded by another nation, I do not want my nation to invade others. It is sufficient that our wealth makes our lives abundant; it is sufficient that our strength is able to prevent foreign invasions. The only thing that I desire in infinite quantity is the power of a noble culture.” Surely this is the nationalism we should strive for. There are evils, and necessary evils, to be sure. A formidable conventional force lies at our disposal and the greatest power of the age stands by our side. What is needed is the voice of reason and pragmatism in addition to our innate idealism. Even conservative broadsheets like the JoongAng Ilbo have been appealing to the Korean public’s common sense, calling for restraint and pause. In our haste to react to Pyongyang, we are neglecting our responsibility of informing the public about what it really means to possess weapons of mass destruction—a senseless holocaust, serving as, in somebody’s words, “imagined self-defense.” Contributing to global nuclear proliferation and escalating a domino effect goes against who we are as a country. Our elders charged with steering this country have a mandate to prevent war, not shun peace and lose control. They can start by confronting the status quo and working to enforce predictability, neutral to the demands of an unreasonable few. hkw1990@naver.com

The meaning of marriage 결혼의 의미

The word ‘marriage’ does not easily touch one’s heart at earlier age. However during one’s 20s, people acknowledge the fact that marriage itself is not a simple concept as thought before. We need a consecutive contemplation as marriage is a process where you try to find a lifelong partner.

It is a very different procedure from a date, where you usually meet a person for only a month or a year.

Sometimes, people deny or think that marriage is unnecessary. However, I personally think that marriage is one of the necessary factors that are essential in our lifetime. When you are dating someone, there is no stability, as there is no legal binding power and no absolute responsibility for each other. Therefore, people go for marriage registration when they find a lifelong partner to define the relationship by establishing a boundary under legal means.

When two people marry, they encounter a new boundary. We should not think of this

as a restraint, where one’s life is restricted.

Responsibility arises for husband, wife and children and this becomes the purpose for one’s life.

As you are having responsibility while doing what you want to, you should not think there are restrictions. Sometimes, people announce the so called, ‘Ode to single,’ not to restrict their freedom.

Still, I think this is also a narrow-minded perspective. People in their 20s to 30s are most outgoing and meet numerous people. In this backdrop, people get to think that their lives are not lonely, and living alone is not uncomfortable.

Rather than having lifetime commitments, they enjoy meeting and parting ways in relationships.

But, it is unclear whether this kind of uncertain relationship can fulfill one’s life. People tend to depend on someone as they get older. It is important to think about the person who you can preferentially depend upon. When the person who

결혼이라는 단어가 어릴 때는 잘 와 닿지 않는다. 단순히 서로를 너무나 사랑하는 남자, 여자가 같이 살게 되는 것 그 이상 그 이하도 아니라고 생각한다. 하지만, 20대를 보내면 서 사람들은 결혼이라는 게 그리 단순한 개념이 아니라는 사 실을 깨닫는다. 짧으면 몇 달, 길면 몇 년을 만나는 연애와 달리 결혼은 평 생을 같이 할 동반자를 찾는 것이기에 끊임없는 심사숙고가 필요한 것이다. 간혹, 결혼이라는 것을 부정하거나 필요하지 않다고 여기 는 사람들이 있다. 하지만, 나는 인생에서 가장 필요한 것 중 에 하나가 결혼이라고 생각한다. 연애를 하면서 누군가를 만 날 때는 안정성이 없다. 법적인 구속력도 없고 서로에 대한 절대적인 책임도 없기 때문이다.그렇기에, 정말 자신과 평 생을 함께 할 사람을 찾으면 혼인신고를 하고 법이란 테두리 안에 둘의 관계를 규정짓는 것이다. 남녀가 결혼을 하면 가정이라는 새로운 울타리가 생긴다. 이걸 구속이라고 생각하고 자신의 삶이 제한된다고 생각하

면 안된다. 자신의 남편 또는 아내 그리고 자식들을 위한 책 임감이 생기는 것이며 그게 삶의 목표가 되는 것이다. 자신 이 하고 싶은 일을 하는 동시에 이런 책임감을 부여 받는 것 이기에 뭔가를 잃는다고 생각을 하면 안된다. 가끔 사람들은 자신의 자유가 제한된다는 이유를 통해 소위 “솔로예찬”을 한다. 하지만, 나는 이 또한 편협적인 관점이라고 생각을 한다.

2,30대에 사람들은 가장 활발하고 가장 많은 사람들을 만난 다. 이런 배경에서, 사람들은 자신이 외롭지 않으며 혼자만 의 생활이 그리 불편하지 않다고 느끼게 된다. 누군가와 평 생을 약속하기 보다는, 자연스런 만남과 헤어짐을 즐기는 것 이다. 하지만, 이런 불확실한 관계들의 연속이 평생 자신을 채워 줄 수 있지는 않을 것 같다. 나이가 들면서 사람들은 누군가 에 의존하려는 경향이 생긴다. 가장 우선적으로 자신이 의존 할 수 있는 사람이 누구인지 생각해보는 게 중요하다. 자신 이 만나오던 그 많은 사람들도 가정이 생기면 누구든 우선순

In other words, no family means instability.

The one that will be by your side for a lifetime, and children that will have dreams and goals by looking up to you, isn’t this the mainspring of your life? So marriage is not a choice but a must.

I am not saying that marry whoever you love. It is also an important process for you to meet people diversely and to find the right one for you. You must look at various prospects of a person while dating. You should experience a big fight or take some time off and also weigh up the pros and cons.

After all, if you think he/she is the one, you don’t have to hesitate from then on. Therefore, marriage is not a question of do it or not, but a question of with who. yh961407@hotmail.com

위가 바뀔 수 밖에 없다. 혼자인 사람은 점점 외로워질 수 밖 에 없는 이유이다. 가족보다 자신을 챙겨주는 사람들은 없다. 가정이 없다면 자신의 삶이 불안정할 수 밖에 없는 것이다. 평생 자신의 편 이 되어줄 사람 그리고 자신을 바라보고 꿈을 키워가는 아이 들, 그런 게 삶의 원동력이 아닐까 생각한다. 이런 의미에서 결혼은 선택이 아닌 필수라고 생각한다. 누군가를 사랑한다 고 무조건 결혼을 하라는 뜻은 아니다. 다양한 사람들을 만 나면서 자신과 가장 조화로운 사람을 찾는 것도 한 단계이 다. 한 사람과의 만남을 통해 여러 가지 측면을 바라보는 게 우 선이다. 크게 싸워도 보고, 시간도 가져보고, 서로에 대한 장 단점을 파악하는 것 말이다. 그 이후에도 ‘이 사람이다’라고 생각이 된다면 그 순간 더 이상 고민할 필요가 없다는 뜻이 다. 결국, 결혼은 ‘해야 할까?’를 고민하는 게 아니고 ‘어떤 사람이랑 해야 할까?’를 생각해야 하는 것이다.

암기력 또한 사고력의 일부 일 수는 있겠으 나, 사고력의 핵심은 이해력이다. 사교육을 포함한 한국 교육 방식의 가장 큰 줄기는 바로 ‘암기’이다. ‘왜’ 라는 질문을 생 략 하고 무조건 이건 이렇고 저건 저렇다는 식으로 외운다. 물론 자연 과학 분야는 예외 이겠지만 그 나머지는 암기가 곧 배움으로 자 리를 잡은듯해서 참으로 안타깝다. 모국어 구사를 외워서 하는 사람은 없듯이 언어 학습 에 있어서 암기가 필요한 부분은 어휘 공부, 딱 그 하나라고 보면 된다. 실은 어휘도 잘 외우려면 적확한 문장을 통해 소리와 함께 읽 혀져야 효과적으로 외워지는데 시험 영어 단 어 공부 하는 하는 학생 들 중 상당수가 연습 장에 빼곡히 적는 비효율적인 공부를 한다. 조선 시대 우리 선조들이 서당에서 소리 내어 읽으 며 공부 하시던 모습을 떠올려 보라. 효과적인 언어 학습 방식을 이미 터득 하고 계셨음이 틀림 없다.

a, an, the의 쓰임새를 정확하게 몰라도 독해는 만점 받을 수 있다 ! 하지만 회화와 영작에선 어떨까 ? a, the에 대 해 제대로 몰라도 지장이 없을까 ? 천만에 말씀 !! a가 있고 없음에 따라 문장의 의미가 전혀 바뀌는 것이 영어다.

The를 쓸 때와 쓰지 않을 때가 엄연히 구분 되어 있기에 사용 유무에 따라 문장의 의미 또 한 완전히 달라지는 것이 영어이다. 매우 초급 적인 내용이긴 하나 한국인 영어 학습자들이 흔히 하는 실수 이자 또 명확한 이유는 잘 설명 하지 못하지만 그냥 그렇게 쓰는 거 아닌가 하고 넘어 가는 내용을 하나 소개 하자면. 그는 의사이다 라는 문장을 영어로 옮기면 He is a doctor.

직업 앞에는 a나 an 사용. 이렇게 외워봤을 것이다.

그러면 그는 한국인이다 라는 문장을 영어로 옮기면

He is Korean. 인지 He is a Korean. 인지 혼돈 하

시는 분들이 의외로 꽤 많다. 혼돈 하는 이유는 a의 존재 이유와 그 기능을 모르고 그저 몇 가지 문장 을 그대로 외우기만 했기 때문이다.

나는 한국 요리를 좋아 합니다.를 영어로 옮기면 I like Korean food. 이다.

한국어 표현은 분명 한국 요리인데 왜 Korea food

가 아니라 Korean food 라고 하는 걸까. 이 문장의 핵심은 한국이 아닌 요리다. 요리라는 명사를 꾸며 주는 한국은 이 문장에선 형용사인 것이다. 형용사 에 개수 개념이 있나 ? 없으니 a를 쓰면 안 되는 것 이다.'

개념과 원리를 따져 가며 배우는 영어 학습의 강점은 예전에 배우지 않은 내용에 대해서도 70% 이상은 맞출 수 있게 된다.

‘ 왜 ’를 따져보는 영문법 학습은 조동사와 현 재시제의 근본적인 차이점을 이해 시킨다.
