A frugal* side to the world’s largest economy, the U.S., is garage sales. Garage sales are a part of American culture for the purpose of selling used goods at affordable prices.

Recently in South Korea, flea markets, similar to garage sales, are becoming popular.

Most Korean flea markets bring together sellers to hold flea markets at specific locations once a week or all through the month.

Apart from buying and selling items, people also come for sightseeing.

Young artists display their handicraft*, some of which is also for sale.

Famous flea markets have very high competition for people to be selected as sellers. They have transformed into cultural icons, frequented by people.

Garage sales represent thrifty* lifestyles in America.

Flea markets in Korea, on the other hand, have evolved beyond that; it is a place for cultural exchange.

Summit meeting between the US and Myanmar in 47 years 美ㆍ미얀마 47년 만의 화기애애한 정상회담

U.S. President Barack Obama and President Thein Sein of Myanmar held a summit on May 20 (local time) at the White House for the first time in 47 years.

“We support President Sein’s reform and open policy even though our retained* relations have not been completely resolved.”

“Over the last two years we have seen a sustained process in which political prisoners, including Aung San Suu Kyi, have been released and election has been incorporated into the democratic process” President Obama said.

“Violence directed toward Muslim communities and religious riots must be stopped” he stated, regarding Myanmar ’s violation of human rights.

President Obama treated

President Sein with honor*, by using the word “Myanmar” as the official name instead of “Burma,” which the U.S. formally used before.

President Obama confused those two words when he visited Myanmar last November. Therefore, it is possible to infer that the summit had a warmer atmosphere. Despite the military authorities of Myanmar changing their name from Burma to Myanmar because their former name was the vestige of the colonial periods of the United Kingdom, the U.S. have kept using the name Burma, because of their refusal to acknowledge the military government by the coup*.

1 out of 5 Korean youth are NEET

It is said that one out of five Korean youth are ‘NEET.’ ‘NEET’ is shortened for ‘Not in Education, Employment or Training,’ which refers to the unemployed* youth who do not have endeavors to work.

According to a 2013 report announced on May 20 by the International Labor Organization, the ratio* of ‘NEET’ within Korean youth

aged between 15~29, was 19.2%. Countries with a ratio of less than 10% were Japan at 9.9%; Switzerland at 9.7%; Slovenia at 8.8%; Norway at 8.5% and Luxembourg at 7.1%.

France, the United States and the United Kingdom showed high rates with 16.7%, 16.1% and 15.9%, respectively.

Divorce and separation due to financial problems and violence increase 기혼 여성의 이혼 별거 이유, 2009년보다 '경제문제, 학대•폭력' 늘어

The biggest reason for divorce amongst married women turned out to be financial problems.

Researcher Kim Yu-kyeong of the Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs* presented a research on the reality of marriages and change of family periods*. The subjects of this research held in 2012 were 604 divorced or separated*

women out of approximately 9,500 married women above the age of 15.

According to the research, the biggest reasons were financial problems, husband’s affair, personality differences, violence, negligence of family responsibilities and family troubles* in that order.

Compared to the results of 2009, the percentage of divorces and separations due to financial problems and violence increased 3.3% and 5.5%, respectively*.

VANK, Comfort Girl statue and their project for awareness 위안부 소녀상, 반크와 국제 홍보 나서

The ‘Comfort Girl’* statue located in front of the Japanese Embassy in Jongro District, Seoul will start a digital promotion*by the nongovernmental organization, VANK (Voluntary Agency Network of Korea). VANK arranged for the ‘International Digital PR Project for Comfort Women’ to raise awareness of Japan’s unreflecting* history. The ‘Comfort Girl’ statue is credited for contributions to raising awareness of the comfort women issue to Koreans and the rest of the world. For this project, VANK produced 10 contents composed of the comfort girl as the main character.

Park Ki-tae, head of VANK, explained that the project is a response to the recent comments

by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Mayor Toru Hashimoto of Osaka. “Claiming ownership of the Dokdo Islets by fabricating obvious historical records and ignoring vocal evidence of comfort women show Japan’s duplicity.” Also, he stressed that, “Believing that international society should know these facts, we decided to take action.”

This project includes university students, who take VANK courses at Kwangwoon University, making various digital contents about

Japanese imperialism and their history of invasions*. The ‘Comfort Girl’ statue being the subject of such content, the students are working to spread their message through social network services.

VA N K a n d K w a n g w o o n University will invite Kim Woonsung and Kim Seo-kyung (aged 49 and 48, respectively) to listen to their story of their ‘Comfort Girl’ statue’s creation for the last lecture on June 19. The lecture will be recorded and be used as promotional content.

Park calls for comprehensive blueprint 박대통령, 북극 계발 계획 지시 for Arctic policies

President Park Geun-hye ordered the government to put together a *blueprint for Arctic policies after South Korea won *permanent observer status at the Arctic Council on Wednesday.

"In a situation where the *strategic and economic values of the Arctic increase, we will be able to take direct part in the decisionmaking process," Park said.

The Arctic is one of the last-remaining regions in the world with large *reserves of

oil and gas as well as increasingly important rare *earth materials. Though its recovery is considered difficult, development possibilities have increased due to *global warming.

Officials said Arctic routes, if realized, will cut shipping distances and time between Asia and Europe and will serve as a fresh *impetus for Northeast Asian economies

The implementation of the April 1 Real Estate Policy has drastically lowered the threshold* for first time homeowners. Due to factors like the recession and an unstable financial market, the metropolitan* real estate market has turned bearish*.

On May 21, a comparative study of past and present prices conducted by Real Estate 114 revealed that metropolitan apartments costing less than 600 million won have fell an average of 12% in prices than before the global financial crisis on August 2008.

On the other hand, lease prices have jumped an average of 32%, representing 60% of sale prices.

As of now, prices of metropolitan apartments under 600 million won that are available for first time homeowners have all dropped compared to the past (Gyeonggi Province by 13%, Incheon by 13% and Seoul by 9%).

As for apartments excluded from government assistance for first time homeowners due to costing more than 600 million won, the drop in prices are greater. Compared to August 2008, such apartments worth more than 600 million won have dropped by 32%.

The drop in prices stands out in the order of Incheon at 31%, Gyeonggi Province at 27% and Seoul at 16%. The analysis is that these apartments have thinner demand than those with lower to average prices and have more sensitivity to market unrest or economic recessions.

Yet, lease prices of apartments less than 600 million won aimed at first time homeowners have skyrocketed by 32% since August 2008 (Gyeonggi by 34%, Seoul by 33% and Incheon by 21%).

On this, research has shown that the proportion of sale prices to lease prices of apartments for first time homeownership has reached 60%. It is a 20% increase compared to the 40% proportion of the same apartment complexes in August 2008.

The drop in housing prices and the rise in lease prices have significantly increased the percentage of leases. Now the average lease price of metropolitan apartments targeted for first time home ownership is 167,510,000 won, which is

40,360,000 won more than 2008’s lease price of 125,340,000 won, and the sale price is 37,300,000 won less than before at 274,900,000 won.

There are fewer burdens for the amount of extra funds that tenants must add to their lease deposit in order to make their current residence into their own home. This is in part because the lease prices have increased, but also sales prices have fallen, thus resulting in a lower threshold for first time homeownership.

The implementation of the Real Estate Policy made it much easier for first time homeowners.

Property acquisition taxes* are waived when purchasing housing under 600 million won, the early burden for funds has decreased because they can receive loans at low interest rates and current housing prices have fallen by more than 10%.

For tenants concerned about buying their own housing, now could be the opportunity, while the basic condition for the transition of lease to purchase of low to middle-priced property amidst the continuous rise of lease prices.

Real Estate 114 senior researcher Kim Eunseon commented, “Because of the house-poor, household debt and economic conditions that are stunting* market recovery and the changing awareness of real estate consumers, it is difficult to expect price rises of the past. Purchasers need to approach with a perspective of increasing their residential stability, choosing a steady dwelling by minimizing interest burdens instead of anticipating on investment returns.” nayoungkim1990@gmail.com

가격이 하락하면서 높기만 했 던 내 집 마련의 문턱이 낮아 진 것이다.

4.1 부동산 대책 시행으로 생 애최초 주택 구입자의 내 집 마련이 한층 수월해 졌다. 6억 원 이하의 주택을 매입할 경우 취득세는 전액 면제되고, 면적 에 따라 낮은 금리의 대출지원 을 동시에 받을 수 있어 초기 자금부담이 줄었고 현재 집값 은 과거와 비교해 10%이상 하 락해 내 집 마련할 수 있는 진 입장벽이 낮아졌다. 지속적으로 오르는 전셋값 상승으로 중저가 물건의 매매 전환을 고려해볼 수 있는 기본 적인 여건이 마련된 가운데 내 집 마련을 고민하고 있는 세입 자라면 지금이 기회가 될 수 있다. 부동산114 김은선 선임연구 원은 "하우스푸어, 가계부채, 경기여건 등이 시장 회복의 발 목을 잡고 있고 부동산의 소비 자 인식변화에 따라 과거와 같 은 가격 상승을 기대하기는 무 리가 있다"며 "이자 부담 등을 최소화해 투자수익 기대가 아 닌 안정적인 주거지를 선택하 는 기회로 주거 안정의 중요도 를 높이는 관점에서 매입 접근 이 필요하다"고 말했다.

Abercrombie and Fitch (A&F stirred controversy and boycotts by its discriminatory comments.

A&F CEO Mike Jeffries interviewed with Salon Magazine in 2006 and has recently found new life in the media through the U.S.-based website, ‘Business Insider,’ causing a major uproar with consumers.

Jeffries reportedly said, “In every school there are the cool and popular kids, and then there are the not-socool kids. Candidly, we go after the cool kids. A lot of people don’t belong [in our clothes], and they can’t belong.”

A&F does not stock larger than XL sizes for women's clothing because they apparently do not want overweight women wearing their brand.

Local consumers are outraged by the company’s “Look Policy.”

A&F also has a history of racial discrimination. The company overtly supported ‘Brand for the White’

In the U.S., lawsuits have been filed against the company due to alleged discriminatory employment practices, paying $40 million in settlements. Also, Jeffries was accused of age discrimination by expressing the intention of hiring younger pilots for the company’s private jet last October.

Son Yeon-jae won multi-medals at the Belarus Minsk World Cup. [The Women's News]

S o n Ye o n - j a e , Korean star of rhythmic gymnastics*, won two silver medals in the final of the Belarus Minsk World Cup. Hosted by the Fédération Internationale de Gymnastique (FIG), Son reached the finals

of both the hoop and the Indian club*.. Official records were 17.7167 points for the hoop and 17.3333 points for the Indian club. The points of the hoop were 0.2833 points less than Daria Svatkovskaya, who won the first place. The

points of the Indian club were 0.25 points less than Melitina Staniouta, who tied for second place with Yana Kudryavtseva.

This was the first time for Son to win multimedals at the finals of the FIG World Cup.

Along with this, she set a record to win medals in four consecutive* competitions.

Bayern Munich crushed Dortmund at the Champions League winning for the first time in 12 years.

They noticed the fierce* competition after defeating Barcelona and Real Madrid in the semi-finals. The match was very close from the start and it went on

with good defense* competition of two goalkeepers.

Manuel Neuer of Bayern Munich defended against numerous shots, while Roman Weidenfeller of Dortmund defended the goal by throwing himself around. The balance between the two teams

broke at the 15th minute of the second half.

Bayern Munich‘s Mario Mandzukic scored the first goal after receiving a low cross from Arjen Robben. But Dortmund once again, set up the balance only after eight minutes with the penalty shootout

from Ilkay Gundogan.

When people started to think of extra time*, Robben scored the final goal after a fantastic dribble.

It is Bayern Munich’s fifth title Champions title.

group discussion on ‘International Cooperation on Improving North Korean Human Rights Situations’ with four North Korean experts: Bernhard Seliger (representative of HSF Korea), Ha Tae-kyong (member of the National Assembly, New Frontier Party), Thomas Smith (Professor at the University of South Florida) and Yoon Yeo-sang (Chief Director of the NKDB).

Korean cultural alcoholism 한국의 술 문화

Every time you step into a Korean pub or restaurant where they serve pork belly on a grill known as ‘samgyeopsal,’ your eyes never miss that green 375 milliliter bottle sitting beside the grill on almost every table.

Of course, there’s always those shot glasses in front of the hungry and drunk late teenagers, college students, professors, businessmen, elders and countless more.

And every time whether you enter such a place or are sitting down munching on that grilled small slice dipped with ‘ssamjang’ and a little piece of garlic and some other veggies stuck to it, wrapped around lettuce… as soon as you’re done chewing and moaning, you take a shot of that water-looking booze, sometimes tasting sweet, bitter, and yet, mostly satisfying. It’s safe to say that it may be the most common anti-depressant in Korea.

Soju may be just one example of how often we really drink, but still, 불판 위에 돼지고기를 굽는 ‘삼겹살’이라고 불리는 음식을 대접해주는 한국식 술집이나 음식점을 들어갈 때면 당신은 거의 모든 테 이블 위 불판 옆에 375ml의 초록색 병을 볼 수 있다. 당연히, 배고프고 취한 청소년들, 대학생들, 교수님들, 직장인들, 어르신들 그 이외에 수도 없는 사람들 앞에는 조그만 잔 도 항상 있다. 그리고 당신이 그런 자리에 착석하거나 앉 아서 조그만 조각을 ‘쌈장’과 작은 마늘 그리 고 다른 야채들과 함께 상추에 싸서 먹을 때 마다, 그 조그만 조각을 씹고 음미하는 순간, 당신은 자기도 모르는 사이 물처럼 생긴 그 술을 한 잔 마시게 된다. 가끔은 달고, 쓰고 또 만족스럽기도 한다. 한국에서 가장 흔한 우울증 치료제라고 생각하면 좋을 것 같다. 소주를 단지 우리가 자주 마시는 음료 중에 하나라고 생각할 수도 있지만 사실 이 커다 란 초록색 병은 평균적인 한국인의 삶 속에 자연스레 녹아있다. 처음으로 한국에 온 외국인이나 관광객들 은 이런 문화를 꽤나 독특하게 생각할 수도 있다. 첫째로, 한국인들은 자신의 동료들과 술 마시는 것을 사랑한다. 다른 사람의 잔이 비었을 때마다 그걸 채우려 하는 모습은 그 들이 그 공허함을 참지 못하는 데서 비롯된 다. 게다가, 한국사람들은 모두가 술잔을 비 웠을 때 한 사람이 술잔을 비우지 않는 걸 참 지 못한다. 이건 한국문화의 가장 근간이라 고 할 수 있다. 그리고 거기서 멈추지 않는다. 외국인들이 나 방문객들이 술을 마셨다고 하는 건 한국 인들에게는 마신 것도 아니다. 단지 ‘한 잔

First, Koreans just love to drink with their fellow man. The performance of filling up another’s glass whenever it’s empty is all because they can’t tolerate the emptiness. But what’s more, we can’t stand it when one fellow doesn’t finish his drink when all the others have turned the shot glass upside down. This is the essence of Korean culture.

So are Koreans alcoholic?

Probably in the traditional or technical sense no. Alcoholism by definition is an abnormal physical desire to consume alcohol beyond their capacity to control it, regardless of all rules and common sense.

Alcoholism means compulsive and uncontrolled consumption of alcoholic beverages, risking one’s health, personal relationships, and social standing.

And it doesn’t stop there. What expats or any visitors believe to be rounds of drinks, Koreans don’t count as a round. We just call it, ‘another glass’ or ‘another bottle.’ ‘Another round’ would be moving to another spot to drink some more. And another place. And another. Long story short, this can go on up to four to six rounds. One round is drinking for at least one to two hours. And in that period, at least one bottle is emptied

Again, Koreans cannot be generalized as an alcoholic bunch.

It’s just the cultural attitude towards particular occasions that may reflect us as such.

there, we drink. Generally, we don’t discriminate on what’s available to get intoxicated on. However, since Koreans are so collective, we always have an unspoken agreement on what to fill our mental state, whether it’s a celebration for someone’s birthday or birth, or some personal issues composed of trials and tribulations— or just some casual drinking session to fill in that void.

Why else do we drink so much and often? Due to the rapid economic growth, typical Korean white-collar or blue collar workers only have enough time for drinking into the night. No Korean has a weekend without alcohol in their hands. We don’t find the time for other leisure activities, not because we’re so into alcohol, but because that’s all they can afford to take their time off for.

And they make the best out of it, which what I believe to be the most contributing reason to the culture that is shown today.

Ladies and gents! It’s your weekly dose of Bonafide. Lately, I am very proud that Korean rappers are becoming more skillful and more appreciated. The era of the electronic music is fading quickly and a lot of popular music is now filling with rap lyrics. I remember when I used to hear rap songs from old Korean pop groups, and I couldn’t understand a single word they were saying. Rap was like filler or an intermediate to prepare for the catchy chorus. So in karaokes people never knew the rap part, nor did they try to listen to what it even said. Although Hip-Hop has a long way to go in this nation, people realize that words are sometimes more meaningful than melodies.

It is scientifically proven that the rapper’s brain has more interaction when performing, compared to a normal pop singer. If one rapper wants to rap about a simple subject, for example, the corruption of a government or the discrepancy of the society, one must do research.

This includes looking up articles, reading books, interviewing people or even experiencing by theirselves.

Besides doing research, writing lyrics also requires rhetorical devices such as similes and metaphors.

If a rapper talked about the ‘63 building in Korea,’ although it is not the tallest building in the world, to the general Korean population it symbolizes grandiose size and stature. So rappers have to study more and think more than most other artists, since rappers have to say more than just “oh I love you, and I miss you.” I actually encourage people to try to write their own lyrics on an instrumental. They will all realize how difficult it is, and realize

Contemplation on tax haven 조세피난처에 대한 고찰

Due to fiscal deficits* of many countries, hidden bank accounts in tax havens such as Switzerland and the Cayman Islands became the heated issue. Former French Budget Minister Jerome Cahuzac resigned after prosecution announced a probe into a Swiss bank account he allegedly used to hide assets from tax authorities. People were outraged by the selfishness of the ‘haves’ who were trying to avoid their basic societal duties when the populace was struggling due to the financial crisis.

It was possible for the ‘haves’ to avoid their tax duties through hidden accounts in tax havens because some countries like Switzerland use that as their strategy to attract capital. Tax havens exploit loopholes of international law which can’t intervene in domestic laws. But after the U.S. threatened to sue Swiss banks unless the banks hand over the list of tax-dodging clients, the situation is changing. However, I don’t believe that such actions are enough to solve the root cause of the problem.

There are many ways to hide assets and avoid tax duties. We need to understand why people create such bank accounts in foreign countries to avoid taxes. There are two kinds of people who use tax havens: people who are engaged in illegal activities for profit, and legitimate earners avoiding taxes. Obviously, we must find the former people’s accounts and punish such misconducts without any compromise. But the latter people are a different issue.

They are not your elite criminals.

Many countries are trying to solve the problem of fiscal deficits by imposing heavy taxes on the rich.

The rich open a bank account in tax havens at the risk of being punished by the government. If government imposes reasonable amount of taxes, the rich will no longer open such bank accounts because the risks outweigh the benefits since the risk will only include not only criminal history but also social stigma* which make their businesses ventures more difficult.

The government should not solve fiscal deficit problems by imposing heavy taxes on the rich. It is immoral that the government pushes their own citizens to be criminals because they believe heavy taxes are an easier way to solve fiscal deficits. Also, the government is practically losing more. According to the Economist, the government is losing more money because of such investigations, and sometimes those investigations are harming diplomatic relations between countries. Finally, if the rich can save their money through domestic accounts, then money can be used for investments which can bring economic growth of the countries.

The Duplicity of KakaoTalk 카카오톡의 이중성

The emergence of the cell phone has made people to experience a new world. It was an innovative technology, which allows us to contact someone farther away. As time goes by, people were astonished with the technology called ‘text messaging,’ as leaving a message itself was cutting-edge technology.

At the end of the 2000s, a program called ‘KakaoTalk’ was revealed through the smartphone, which further provides people with both convenience and effectiveness until now. But, does this new program only give out benefits to the people?

I found three demerits from the three merits that people usually think of.

First, KakaoTalk is free. Not like the text message that costs 30 won each, just like the program such as Nate-On on the internet, KakaoTalk 처음 핸드폰이 나왔을 때 사람들은 새로운 시대와 조우했다. 누군가와 원거리에서 연락 을 할 수 있다는 건 정말 혁신적인 기술이었 기 때문이다. 시간이 흐르고, 사람들은 또 문 자라는 기술에 놀랐고 메시지를 남겨놓을 수 있다는 사실은 획기적이었다. 2000년대 후 반, 스마트폰을 대두로 한 카카오톡이란 프 로그램은 지금까지도 사람들에게 편리함과 유용성을 동시에 제공해주고 있다. 하지만, 과연 이 카카오톡이라고 불리는 최신의 프로 그램은 사람들에게 이점만을 제공하고 있을 까? 필자는 사람들이 생각하는 장점 3가지 를 통해 단점 3가지를 유추해냈다. 첫째, 카카오톡은 무료다. 한번 보낼 때 30 원이 들었던 문자와는 달리 인터넷 상의 네 이트온과 같은 프로그램처럼 카카오톡은 메

Unlike the text message which needs shortening efforts, people send messages on KakaoTalk without second thought. This is another root cause of the addition.

Second, people can find out whether the counterpart received the message or not within KakaoTalk.

It will be hard to find the people, whom never give any meaning to the number ‘1,’ which is right beside the message. As we cannot find out whether the counterpart received the message or not when using text messages, we then simply must wait. But, as KakaoTalk itself has 시지를 보낼 때 돈이 들지 않는다. 하지만, 이처럼 부담이 되지 않기에 사람들은 더욱 쉽게 중독이 된다. 무료라는 이름아래 자신 의 실질적인 삶에 집중하지 못하고 계속해서 메시지를 주고 받게 되는 것이다. 메시지 하 나에 생각을 압축하려 노력했던 문자와는 달 리, 생각나는 대로 그냥 보낸다는 것도 중독 의 가장 근본적인 원인이라고 할 수 있다. 둘째, 카카오톡은 상대방의 수신여부를 확 인할 수 있다. 카카오톡을 사용하는 사람이 라면 메시지 옆에 떠있는 1이란 숫자에 의미 를 부여하지 않은 사람은 드물 것이다. 문자 는 단순히 전송을 한 후, 그 사람의 수신여부 를 알 수 없었기에, 우리는 단순 기다림으로 일관할 때가 많았다. 하지만, 카카오톡에는 수신확인기능이 장착되어 있기에 사람들에

Nevertheless, it brings a huge side effect. When people are talking too much, and when topics are increased, the KakaoTalk alarm rings ceaselessly. 국 문화의 가장 큰 특징 중의 하나가 바로 “Give & Take” 즉 “주는 만큼 받고 받는 만큼 준다” 입니다. (보다 일반적인 표현으로 "You get what you pay for."라고 더 많이 예기하죠.) 특히나 상대방과 친하지 않거나 전혀 유대 관계가 없는 경우에는 무언가 사소한 도움을 받 더라도 미국인들은 그만큼의 대가로 꼭 보답하기를 원하죠. 미국에서는 이러한 문화가 너무 당연시 되고 있어서 대부분의 미국인들이 아주 사소한 일 이라도 잘 모르는 이에게 도움 받는 것 자체를 별로 달가워하지 않습니다. 부득이한 경우로 도움을 받은 경우에는 어떻게든 그에 상응하는 대가를 지불하려 합니다. 한 예로 미국에서 제가 대학생활을 하던 시절, 도서관 주차장에서 핸드폰을 주운 적이 있었 습니다.

초면이거나 혹은 이전에 만나서 소개를 받은 적은 있지만 아직 서로에 대하여 잘 모르는 미국인과 대화를 할 때 많은 분들이 어떻게 보다 대화를 자연스럽고 원활하게 진행해 나갈 수 있을지 궁금해 하십니다. 이에 대한 해답 중의 하나가 바로 이 “give & take”라는 문화를 정확하게 이해하고 대화 를 진행해 나가는 것이지요. 먼저 여러분의 진정한 모습을 보여주면 당연 히 상대방도 그 만큼에 대한 상대방의 모습을 보여줘야 한다는 예기죠. 아마도 대부분의 여러분들은 “How are you?”, “How are you doing?, 또는 “How’s it going?” 이라고 외국인이 인사했을 때 단순하게 “Good, how are(about) you?” 또는 “I’m fine thank you, and you?” 라고 하 시죠? 교과서에서 배운 대로 어찌보면 너무나 당연한 응답 표현이라고 생각하 시겠지만 사실 이렇게 예기했을 때 상대방에게 돌아오는 대답은 당연히 여러분의 응답과 마찬가지로 “Good” 이나 “I’m okay” 정도밖에 기대하 실 수 없습니다. 이러한 경우, 상대방이 붙임성 있는 미국인이 아니어서 먼저 이야기꺼 리를 꺼내지 않으면 그 다음 대화를 진행해 나가기가 참 쉽지 않습니다. 여러분의 개인적인 이야기를 꺼내는 것 도 잘 모르는 사람에게 결례인 것 같고 상대방에게 질문을 하더라도 사생활을 침해하는 것은 아닌가 걱정 이 되고 도대체 무슨 말로 대화를 이어나가야 할지 답답해 하시죠.

왜 더 이상 대화의 진전이 어려운 걸까요? 사실은 처음 인사할 때부터 여러분은 여러분 자신에 대해서 이야기 할 수 있는 기회를 “Good” 이라는 형식적이고 딱딱한 표현을 쓰면서 놓쳐 버리시는 겁니다. 앞으로 외국인이 여러분에게 “How are you doing?” 이라고 인사할 때, “I am doing great because I will meet my girl friend to celebrate her birthday!”

아니나 다를까 그 전화로 계속 전화가 오길래 받아보니 핸드폰의 주인이더군요. 도서관 앞 에 있다고 하니 핸드폰 가지러 금방 오더군요. 사실 저는 한 5분도 채 안되는 시간을 그 친 구가 오기까지 기다려 준 것이 다인데 오자 마자 고맙다는 말과 동시에 저에게 20불을 주더 군요. 제가 극구 괜찮다고 거절 했지만 곧바로 저에게 “You are worth getting it because you’ve been waiting here for me.”라고 하며 억지로 저에게 돈을 쥐어주고 갔습니다. 너의 시간을 내가 빼앗은 만큼 당연히 그 대가를 지불해야 한다는 것이죠. 실제로 한번은 보험회사에서 한 아주머니가 너무 많은 시간을 기다려서 직장에 못 가고 있 다고 불평하니 담당자가 그 자리에서 바로 그 아주머니에게 두 시간치 일당을 물어보고 현금 으로 주더군요. 그 아주머니는 물론 너무나 당연하다는 식으로 돈을 받았고요. 이러한 상황뿐 아니라 미국에서 “give & take” 문화는 어떠한 상황에서든 기본적으로 지켜 야 하는 일종의 에티켓이라고 생각하는 것 같습니다. 그렇기 때문에 일상 대화에서도 이러한 원칙이 지켜지고요.

“I feel terrible because I hit a squirrel while I was driving home” 같은 식으로 여러분의 일 상에 대한 가벼운 내용과 함께 응 답해보세요. 상대방에게도 여러 분의 그러한 여러분의 일상에 대 해서 보다 부담 없고 편안하게 물 어보면서 대화를 시작할 수 있습 니다. 그리고 나서 “How about you” 라고 물어보시면 “Give & Take!” 상대방도 “good” 같은 형식적 응 답보다는 당연히 여러분과 마찬 가지로 “Good. I am going to visit my grand father’s home” 또는 “ I feel bad because I lost my bag in the library.” 처럼 가벼 운 주제의 개인적인 일상에 대한 내용과 더불어 응답을 할 거에요. 이럴 때 “How is your grand father doing?” 또는 “I guess you should contact librarians to make sure that they keep your bag in their lost and found (분실물 보관소)” 라고 예기하시면 자연 스레 대화의 공통된 화제도 생기고 상대방에 대한 믿음도 쌓이게 되면서 보다 친근감 있는 대화를 하실 수 있겠죠. 항상 미국인과 대화를 나누실 때 “Give & Take” 를 염두하시고 대화해 보세요. 여러분이 대화에서 여 러분 자신을 보여주는 만큼 상대방도 마음에 문을 열고 보다 편하게 자신의 이야기를 합니다. 잊지 마세 요. “Give & Take”
