Many stars rise and fall. But some live on in people’s memories to become forever immortalized*.

It has been four years since ‘King of Pop’ Michael Jackson’s unexpected death on June 25, 2009. With less than a month left

to his comeback stage, a fourth world tour, one that he would be having in 13 years, his sudden death caught many off guard*.

It was two years later when Canadian entertainment company Cirque du Soleil started showing ‘Michael Jackson The Immortal World Tour,’ a performance which brought together an audience of 2 million across 100 cities to amass* a total of 220 million dollars (247 billion won)

of profit for year 2011 alone.

On July 10, the epic performance was brought to Korea for the first time. Showing in Seoul and Daegu, the tour lasts until July 21.

Bringing such a large scale performance to Korea was not easy, of course. The major obstacle* lied in that facilities weren’t fit for the show, which would include the use of high ropes and many special effects. Such obstacles were overcome through

installing a floor which cost 130 million won.

Korea’s first radar observation satellite

The government announced on July 11 its plan to launch K O M P S AT- 5 , K o r e a ’ s first radar-equipped Earth observation satellite* on August 22.

The satellite was moved to Yasny launch base in Orenburg Region, Russia on Thursday, the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning said.

The KOMPSAT-5 is Korea’s first synthetic aperture radar

(SAR)* satellite, capable of providing images in all weather conditions. The SAR satellite would eliminate limitations of traditional satellites that are unable to monitor flooding under heavy clouds.

If the launch is successful, the satellite will begin operations after six months of testing in February 2014 at an altitude of 550 km.

July 9 marked the beginning of Ramadan this year for Korea’s 140,000 Muslims, which represent just a small fraction of the world’s 1.6 billion followers of Islam.

To cleanse the body and soul, for the 30 days of the Islamic holiday, Muslims go through a period of intense devotion* and selflessness in which they do not drink, eat, have sexual relations or do anything deemed impure* or interruptive to their spiritual reflection during daylight hours.

Muslims also must pray five times a day, a practice that is strictly followed during Ramadan.

In Korea, the majority of Muslims are from Indonesia, Malaysia, Uzbekistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh, though there

is a significant number of Korean Muslims as well. To offer religious services to Muslims throughout Korea, there are more than 15 mosques and Islamic centers, including the Seoul Central Mosque in Itaewon which was established in 1976.

For those interested in seeing the beautiful white and blue-tiled mosque or trying out some great international cuisine at one of the halal* restaurants, or food that is allowed under Islamic Shari’ah law, head to Itaewon. The mosque is located at 732-21 Hannam Neighborhood and the surrounding area is full of shops, restaurants and bakeries owned by members of the Muslim community.

The tragic* plane crash which resulted in the death of three passengers and injured many more was reduced to nothing more than a racist* joke.

Racial stereotypes* came into play on broadcasts and news reports of the Asiana Flight 214 plane crash.

On July 12, Bay Area Fox affiliate KTVU announced the purported names of the pilots of Asiana Flight 214, which crashed in San Francisco, U.S. on July 6.

Controversy* arose in that the names were obviously fabricated.

The fake names were blatantly* reported by the news anchor, reading, “Sum Ting Wong (Some Thing Wrong),” “Wi Tu Lo (We Too Low),” “Ho Lee Fuk (Holy Fu**)” and “Bang Ding Ow.” The anchor also added that

the information had been confirmed by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).

Later, the channel announced an apology in the broadcast saying, “Earlier in the newscast we gave some names of pilots involved in the Asiana Airlines crash. These names were not accurate despite an NTSB official in Washington confirming them late this morning. We apologize for the error.”

Similarly, other news agencies made racial twists on the incident.

The Chicago Sun-Times was heavily criticized for its front page headline “FRIGHT 214,” which people accused of sounding like a stereotypical Asian accent.

Heavy rain has caused damage north of Seoul on July 14, flooding homes and roads, and even knocking down a part of the wire fence bordering North Korea.

Officials said northern Gyeonggi Province was met with 272 millimeters of rain between Saturday and Sunday, Yeoncheon County receiving 100 millimeters of rain in an hour early in the day.

The body of a 57-year-old man was found dead near at around 11:25 a.m. He was swept by flooded stream near Pocheon City. A 38-year-old woman’s body was found in Gapyeong, also killed in a similar way.

Time Magazine reported on July 12 that smartphone addiction is becoming more serious as it was revealed that one in 10 Americans use smartphones while having sex.

According to Jumio’s recent 2013 Mobile Consumer Habits Study*, 9 percent of respondents said that they have used their smartphones during sex. The figure rose to 20 percent for those between the ages of 18 to 34.

The poll* that Jumio requested Harris Interactive to conduct showed that approximately 12 percent of Americans believe that smartphones get in the way of pursuing an intimate relationship and that three quarters of respondents keep their smartphones within three meters of themselves at all times.

해외투자펀드 규모 7.4% 상승

Foreign investment in assets increased by 7.4 percent in the first half of this year, showing investors’ interests and focus on secure assets*, data showed on July 12.

According to data from the Korea Financial Investment Association, such investments have reached 39.7 trillion won ($35.3 billion) as of June, an increase from the end of December 2012, reported at 37 trillion won. The association explained that investors pursued* safer assets caused by the recession*.

Overseas investments in debts amounted to 7.5 trillion won at the end of June, up 31.7 percent six months ago. The number accounted for 19.1 percent of the total investment.

In contrast, investors from overseas reduced their investments on foreign stocks by 10.2 percent, reaching 20.1 trillion won over the same period. Such reduction was influenced by the decline of the global stock markets.

The government announced on July 8 that it will help companies raise funds through sale of corporate bonds, providing up to 6.4 trillion won ($5.6 billion).

The measure is a response to the economic slowdown.

According to the Financial Services Commission (FSC), state-run financial institutions*, namely the Korea Development Bank, will buy bonds issued by local companies with lower credit

ratings, along with government guarantees in order to sell the bonds with less borrowing costs.

The Development Bank will be the main buyer and will securitize the bonds with a pool of different types of assets, called ‘primary collateralized* bond obligations.’

Such measures will occur before the state lender puts them up for sale, the FSC said.

Hyundai Motor’s Accent became Russia’s second best-selling automobile during the first half of this year, data showed on July 12.

Known as the Solaris in the Russian market*, Hyundai sold 57,009 units between January and June. The data was shown online by the Moscow-based Association of European Businesses.

Despite the numbers, sales of the Accent fell by 2 percent compared to last year.

Following was the Pride, a

subcompact* vehicle manufactured

by Kia Motors, majority-owned by Hyundai. The Kia Pride had 44,236 units sold under the name, New Rio in the Russian market. The data also showed the Pride was up 5 percent from a year ago.

The current best-seller is the subcompact Lada Granta within the first half, manufactured by Russia’s largest auto manufacturer, AvtoVAZ, selling 84,241 units. According to the data, the sales rose by 87 percent.

명품 브랜드 매출 하락

Due to the economic slump*, sales of luxury brands including Burberry, Gucci and Ferragamo have declined in Korea, according to data shown on July 11.

The data, shown by the Financial Supervisory Service, reported 5.3 percent sales decline on-year of Burberry Korea, revenue* reaching 228.1 billion won ($202.3 million)

for the fiscal year 2012. Net profit decreased by 35.1 percent at 16.8 billion won. For the 2011 fiscal year, Burberry’s net profit fell by 25.6 percent.

Gucci Group Korea also suffered by 4.5 percent from a year ago, reporting 282.6 billion won in revenue. Operating profit* and net profit fell by 34.8 percent and 43

percent, respectively.

For Ferragamo Korea, its net income declined 12.8 percent for the same period, despite sales increasing 1.2 percent to 98.4 billion won.

Prada Korea’s case was different, their net income increasing 10.5 percent on-year, reaching 58.8 percent in 2012. Their sales, however, was lower than 2011,

reporting 64.2 percent growth.

Market watchers reason that the slump in sales is due to the recession causing weaker consumer spending, which is leading to stagnant performances among the luxury brands.

한편 구찌그룹코리아는 2012 회계연도(지난해 1월 1일~12월 31일) 매출액이 2826억원으로 전 년대비 4.5% 감소했고 영업이익과 순이익이 각 각 34.8%, 43.0% 줄었다. 페라가모코리아는 작년 매출액이 984억원으 로 전년보다 1.2% 늘었지만, 영업이익은 9.0% 줄 었고 순이익도 12.8% 감소했다.

It has been verified that the VIP package ticket for Canadian pop star Justin Bieber’s first concert in Korea on October 10, ‘Justin Bieber Believe Tour,’ is priced at 1.45 million won.

Included in the package is a fan meeting with Bieber, a group photo shoot and a limited edition* tour poster, among others.

This package is not exclusive for the concert in Korea; it is also

provided on Bieber tours elsewhere.

Apart from other packages that cost from 300,000 to 400,000 won, regular seats cost from 99,000 to 132,000 won.

Meanwhile, Bieber’s VIP package tickets set the Korean record for most expensive pop star concerts.

It has been reported that as of July 12, some 10 people bought these VIP package tickets.

The 3 things men must never be addicted to 남자들이 중독되지 말아야 할 3가지

egardless of age, people encounter hardships. At those times, they try to find diverse ways to relieve stress and to protect themselves. Normally, we forget the moment and minimize stress through hobbies such as reading a book, listening to music, exercise, etc. But, some people try to overcome difficult moments with ways that can harm their health or deteriorate their minds. There are three negative factors that make men forget about reality and easily become addicted. Alcohol, gambling and women. Some people might be dubious about the absence of cigarettes, but I want to state that these three things have much more far-reaching power than that. This week, I would like to talk about these three things that men must never be addicted too.

사람들은 나이를 불문하고 항상 힘이 드는 순간들이 있다. 그런 순간들마다 그들은 스 트레스를 해소할 여러 방법들을 모색하며 자 신들을 보호한다. 보통 우리는 독서, 음악감 상, 운동 등의 취미를 통해 스트레스를 해소 한다. 하지만, 가끔 사람들은 자신들의 몸을 해치거나 마음을 피폐하게 만드는 행동들로 힘든 순간을 극복하려 할 때도 있다. 특히, 남자들이 쉽게 현실을 잊고 중독되기 쉬운 3 가지가 있는데 그것은 술, 도박, 여자이다. 담배가 왜 빠져있냐고 의아해하는 사람들도 있겠지만 이 3가지의 파급력은 담배 그 이상 이라고 말하고 싶다. 필자는 이번 주에 남자 들이 중독되지 말아야 할 이 3가지에 대해서 말하고자 한다.

First,

m en should not be addicted to alcohol. Alcohol is somewhat the most simple and easiest to find for people who want to relieve their stress. It is good in reasonable amounts, as alcohol promotes the circulation of blood and also helps people to become straightforward.

But the problem occurs when one drinks over his/her drinking capacity without noticing. If too much alcohol goes into the body without acknowledging one's act out of drunkenness, people act in the absence of responsibility. Especially, many troubles can emerge when young robust men become out of control. They tend to unnecessarily swear or punch others and become very ugly people. Men must be aware of these actions, which can harm others, as these can ruin one's reputation badly. As a man, one

must be able to control his drinking capacity. That's the authentic preventive measure to minimize the mistake at important places. You always have to maintain a state of tension as one careless action can put you into the bottomless pit for life.

첫째, 남자들은 술에 중독되면 안 된다. 술 이란 어찌 보면 사람들이 가장 쉽게 찾고 접 할 수 있는 스트레스 해소방법이다. 적당량 의 술은 혈액순환에도 도움을 주고 사람들의 솔직한 모습을 드러내줄 수 있어서 좋은 건 사실이다. 하지만, 술에 너무 빠져 자신의 주 량 이상을 들이키는 경우 여러 문제가 발생 한다. 자신의 주사를 모르고 너무 많은 알코 올이 몸에 들어가는 순간 사람들은 자신이 책임질 수 없는 행동들을 하게 된다. 특히, 젊은 나이의 건장한 남자들이 통제불능상태 가 되면 여러 문제들이 생긴다. 불필요한 욕 을 하며, 쓸데없는 주먹을 날리며 꼴불견의 모습이 된다. 이는 주변 사람들에게 큰 피해 를 입히며, 자신의 평판에도 큰 타격을 줄 수 있기 때문에 주의해야 한다. 남자라면, 항상 자신의 주량조절을 할 줄 알아야 한다. 그래 야, 정말 중요한 자리에 있을 때 실수를 최소 화 할 수 있다. 한 순간의 부주의함으로 자신 을 평생 나락으로 빠뜨릴 수도 있기에 항상 긴장해야 한다.

Second,

men should n o t b e addicted to gambling. We can regard gambling as a game. Good players win and others lose, which is a zerosum game. People continuously play the game as they can feel catharsis at the moment, when the outcome of the game turns out. But, the characteristics of the usual game and gambling are a bit different as the latter involves money. In other words, people’s inner desire towards money will likely come out. Unlike the simple moments of victory or defeat, if money is involved, people tend to be addicted more easily. The ideal thing is that people should stop at the right time when they win some money. But the problem is that men concentrate more at the time of their winning streaks and keep gambling in the name of pride. They endeavor larger amounts of money as they win some money. If this pattern continues, men can gamble themselves out of everything they have. They will gradually try to draw the money, which is beyond their capacity. It will indulge them in a get-rich-quick fever and can make these people totally dejected. Many people warn that the swamp of gambling is so deep and it is really

hard to perfectly recover. Therefore, if you are not sure whether you could control yourself well, you should stay away from gambling.

둘째, 남자들은 도박에 중독되면 안 된다. 도박도 어떻게 보면 게임의 일종이라고 볼 수 있다. 누군가는 이기고 누군가는 질 수 밖 에 없는 제로섬게임이라고 말할 수도 있다. 사람들이 게임을 하는 주된 이유는 그 승패 의 갈림에서 느끼는 카타르시스 때문이다. 하지만, 일반적인 게임과 도박은 돈이 걸려 있다는 사실만으로 그 성격이 조금 다르다. 사람들에게 내재되어 있는 돈에 대한 욕망 그 자체가 드러나게 된다. 단순히 이기고 졌 을 때와는 달리 돈을 따는 것과 잃는 것은 사 람들을 미치게 하고 중독을 야기한다. 조금 의 돈을 획득했을 때, 그 상황에 만족하는 게 가장 이상적이지만 남자들은 자존심을 내세 워 계속해서 몰입하게 되는 게 문제이다. 어 느 정도의 돈을 따면 더 큰 돈을 바라고 또 그 이상을 바라게 된다. 이런 현상이 반복되 면 패가망신의 길로 접어드는 것이다. 자신 의 능력이상의 돈을 끌어당기려 하며 한탕주 의에 빠져서 폐인이 되어버릴 수가 있기 때 문이다. 도박중독은 한 번 그 늪에 빠지면 완 치가 안 된다고 하니 절제를 할 자신이 없으 면 발을 담그지 않는 게 좋을 듯 하다.

Third,

m en should not be addicted to women. You should know that women that I am talking about here are not the ones we regard as a girlfriend. While living a life, men need women of course, who is like-minded and also who can have a serious relationship with. But meeting a woman for momentary (physical) pleasure by paying money is very hazardous and a mistake. An appropriate thing is to acknowledge the happiness at the time when a man loves a woman and cherish it.

When one starts to meet women by paying money, he will lose the moral concept of meeting a woman.

In this backdrop, it is inevitable that these people will think love as a very light and easy concept. The men who cannot easily control their sexual desires will be easily addicted to this unnecessary state. As the old saying goes, “What is learned in the cradle is carried to the grave,” it is people’s fundamental trait to crave for the same thing when addicted. It is important that men should know what kind of women they should meet. But regardless, men should be aware of the fact that wasting their body and mind in immoral places is a real waste of time. If you are smart, you should never degrade your values.

셋째, 남자들은 여자에 중독되면 안 된다. 여기서 말하는 여자는 우리가 흔히 말하는 여자친구의 개념이 아니라는 걸 알아야 한 다. 사람이 살아가면서 인연이 되고 서로 마 음이 맞아서 만나는 여자는 필요하다. 하지 만, 일순간의 쾌락을 위해서 돈을 주고 여자 를 만나는 건 굉장히 위험한 행동이고 남자 들이 흔히 하는 실수이다. 여자를 만나고 사 랑을 한다는 것, 그 자체의 소중함을 알고 행 복을 느끼는 것, 이런 게 바람직한 모습이다. 돈으로 여자를 만나게 되면, 사람을 만난다 는 것 자체의 도덕적인 개념을 상실하게 된 다. 그리고 사랑이란 관념의 의미를 너무나 쉽게 받아들이고 가볍게 여길 수 밖에 없게 된다. 성욕이란 걸 자제하지 못하는 남자들 은 이런 불필요한 곳에 빠져서 헤어나오지를 못한다. 세 살 버릇 여든 간다는 말이 있듯이 한번 중독이 되면 계속해서 찾게 되는 게 사 람의 본성이기 때문이다. 남자가 어떠한 여 자를 만나야 함을 제대로 아는 것도 중요하 지만, 기본적인 인연 외에 이렇듯 본질적으 로 부도덕한 곳에 몸과 마음을 투자하는 것 은 시간낭비란 걸 알아야 한다. 현명한 남자 라면 쓸데없이 자신의 가치를 낮추는 행동은 삼가는 게 옳다고 생각한다.

Everyone is under stress. So people endlessly agonize for some kind of breakthrough. Men of course, are under stress. They have to fight for their pride for a lifetime and also live with the responsibility for their family. But these cannot justify the addiction towards some wrong things as there are much more healthy and valuable methods to get rid of stress. If you are a man who has at least one addiction among those three, you must try hard to correct those addictions as soon as possible. It is not only for you, but for your family in the future. Be cautious about drinking, gambling and women. If you cannot control or be responsible for your actions, it means you have lost the very value of being a man. 사람은 누구나 힘들다. 그래서 사람은 어 떠한 돌파구를 찾으려 끊임없이 고민한다. 남자도 힘들다. 평생 자존심을 건 싸움을 하 며, 자신의 가정을 위한 책임감을 지니고 살 아야 하기 때문이다. 하지만, 이런 명목들이 엉뚱한 곳에 중독되는 것을 합리화 시킬 수 는 없다. 세상에는 훨씬 더 건강하고 가치 있 는 활동들이 많기 때문이다. 위에서 언급한 3가지의 중독 중에 최소 1가지 이상의 증상 이 있는 남자라면 가능한 빠른 시일 내에 자 신을 돌아보며 그 모습을 고칠 필요가 있다. 지금의 자신만을 위해서가 아니라 미래에 자 신이 꾸릴 가정을 위해서이기도 하다. 주의 하라, 술, 도박 그리고 여자를. 그리고 조심 하라, 자신의 행동을 절제하지 못하거나 책 임질 수 없다면 이는 남자로서의 가치를 잃 어버린 것이다.

e et Sungyong. This 29-year-old sociallyminded president of the NGO Africa Insight spent a year and a half in Tanzania and two years in Senegal doing volunteer work and internships. He is now back in Korea to share his experience and spread cultural understanding. While living in Senegal, Sungyong especially enjoyed the take-it-slow, calmer lifestyle. He said, for example, ‘Ndank Ndank’ is a common expression in the Wolof language meaning ‘slowly slowly’ and ‘Jamm,’ another common expression that means ‘peace.’

I definitely would recommend that more people travel, volunteer or have any kind of experience in any African country. Africa has so much potential and rich traditions, strength and charm. What’s going on?! This is your weekly dose of Bonafide. Hope you all paid your tribute to the artists that died in the past few years. This week I am going to introduce you to some songs that disses (disrespects) the mainstream “hip-pop” industry.

“Hip-pop” is hip-hop songs that are designed to be popularized rather than being true to the genre, which gave its name by mixing hip-hop and pop music. There are numerous artists who rose to fame through this genre and sometimes are much more appreciated than the pioneers. For example, 2Pac, Notorious B.I.G., and Nas had six, four and 13 Grammy nominations respectively, but could not win any. But Lil Wayne was nominated 19 times and won four! I do believe Lil Wayne is a talented artist, but I am almost positive that most hip-hop listeners would not agree with the outcome of the nominations. I understand that the average consumer of the music industry does not spend that much time or effort to listen or interpret songs.

Which is why dancing songs or catchy chorus parts prevail.

안녕하십니까? 보나파이드입니다. 이번 주에는 근래 ’힙팝’을 풍자하거나 질타했던 노래들을 소개하려 합니다. “힙팝”이란 힙합과 팝송을 섞어서, 비록 힙합노래이지만 대중적인 노래를 일컫는 말입니다. 이런 노래들을 만든 사람들은 어찌 보면 힙합 의 진정한 선구자들보다 더 많은 인기를 얻기도 했습니다. 예를 들면 투팍, 비기, 나스는 각각 6, 4, 13번의 그래미 후보에 올랐 지만 단 한번도 수상하진 못했습니다, 반면에 릴웨인은 19번 후보에 오르고 4번이나 수상을 하였습니다. 릴웨인이 정말 재 능이 많은 랩퍼라는 것은 인정하지만, 힙합을 아시는 분들은 이 결과에 만족하지 않으리라 생각합니다. 이것은 대중이 노래를 듣고 이해하는데 많은 시간을 쏟지 않기 때문입니다. 그래서 댄 스곡이나 후렴부분이 귀에 착착 감기는 노래들이 판을 치는 겁 니다.

The first song is “D.O.A. (Death of Auto-Tune)”

by Jay-Z. Auto-Tune is the technology to alter pitch or tone of the voice. It is used in a global range from different countries. For your easier understanding, just think of the robotic sound of artists in their songs. T-Pain was prominent few years ago, making it a hot trend. However, Jay-Z realized that the mechanical device cannot override the raw sound of a person’s voice and made this song. Auto-Tune = Wack.

첫번째 노래는 제이지의 D.O.A입니다. 이건 ‘오토튠의 죽음’ 이라는 노래로 오토튠을 비방하는 노래입니다. 오토튠이란 원 래의 목소리의 음정이나 톤을 자유자재로 바꿀 수 있는 기계 또 는 기술입니다. 누구나 한번쯤은 기계소리 같은 목소리를 들어 봤으리라 짐작됩니다. 한때 티페인이 이 오토튠으로 유명해지 기도 했었는데요, 제이지는 기계가 낸 소리가 사람이 내는 소리 를 넘어설 수 없다고 단정짓게 된 계기로 작용하기도 했습니다.

“Hurt Me Soul” by Lupe Fiasco is actually a portrait of the things that makes him feel unfortunate about life. But the first verse starts with why he hated hip-hop because it degraded women.

Considering numerous rappers and artists rap about fornicating and treating females as sexual objects, it was about time to stand up for women in the hiphop industry. 루페 피아스코의 Hurt me soul은 힙합을 비방하기 보다는 세속적인 것에 대해 안타까움을 나타낸 노래인데, 첫 소절부터 이런 얘기를 합니다. “나는 힙합을 싫어했어, 여자들을 비하하 길래, 하지만 tooshort때문에 나는 위선자처럼 시작하게 되었 지.” 사실상 힙합중에 여자를 성차별하고 비하하는 노래가 많 다는 건 사실입니다, 그래서 이런 진솔한 랩퍼가 더욱 애착이 가기도 합니다. 누군가는 여성들을 위해 목소리를 내줘야 하기 때문입니다.

“Hip-hop Is Dead” by Nas ft. will.i.am was number one on the Billboards when it first came out. Although becoming a famous song, it brought a huge impact on the hip-hop industry since it had an intonation that southern hip-hop artists were cheapening the quality of hip-hop. Young Jeezy had made derogatory comments towards Nas but later reconciled with the collaboration in the song “My President.” Nas did later explain it wasn’t just about hip-hop, but their nation and how it was crumbling down due to corruption.

나스의 Hip-hop Is Dead는 빌보드차트에서도 명성을 떨쳤던 노래입니다. 유명한 노래이기도 하지만, 힙합시장에 큰 파장을 불러 일으키기도 했는데요, 그 이유는 남부 랩퍼들이 힙합을 싸 구려로 만든다는 느낌을 줘서, Young Jeezy같은 랩퍼들에게도 질타를 받았습니다. 나중에 같이 버락 오바마 대통령 대선 이후 에 노래 합작을 한 뒤부터 다시 화해를 했고, 나스는 이에 덧붙 여 해명을 했습니다. “힙합이 죽었다기보다는 우리 미국이 죽 어가고있다. 우리는 이러다 로마처럼 망하게 될 것이다” 정말 시인이 따로 없다는 생각이 듭니다. 좋은 한주 보내십시오.

ired of listening to the same old club music or the K-pop flavor of the week? Want to learn about lesser-known foreign artists, local artists and new talents?

Night Vibe is a radio show that is “anything but conventional,” in the words of Elliott Ashby, one half of the dynamic duo consisting of himself and Pinnacle The Hustler.

The show is very versatile, as Pinnacle described, “We might play top 40, or we might play a Jump Smokers remix. We’ll play Rihanna and follow up with a Lecrae song, then transition to a song from La Roux right before we go into our Funk & Soul segment.”

The show “strives to play the best mix of urban pop music while keeping the listening audience wellinformed and entertained.” To that end, in addition to playing recorded songs, Night Vibe features debates, skits, freestyles and call-ins from listeners, as well as live DJs on Fridays and Saturdays.

The live radio show is unique as it is completely unscripted and, in the words of Elliott, “predictably unpredictable” so you “never know what might happen.”

In the past, the show has had such notable guests as Zion T, Musiq Soulchild, Swings, Nick Cannon, Crush, Robert Glasper, Dok2, Windy

City, DJ Symphony, Dia Frampton, KrnFx, Garion, Simo & Mood Schula, Q-bert, DJ Neil Armstrong, Kuma Park etc. as well as radio drops from Swizz Beatz, Ludacris, Boyz II Men and The Alchemist, among others.

When the two hosts were asked who their favorite guests have been, Elliott explained that he doesn’t have a favorite as each guest teaches him something new. Pinnacle said that he most looks forward to interviews that involve freestyle.

In addition to hanging out in the studio with guests artists, Pinnacle explained that they “like to be involved with charity events, hip hop shows, remote broadcasts and other endeavors of similar caliber.

However, [they] both feel like there’s much more to be done.”

Elliott commented that if he could get anyone on the show, he would like have Gaeko and Choiza from Dynamic Duo and Tiger JK and T as guests.

에 대해 알아보겠습니다.

Today, we are going to look at fundraising and various innovations related donations. 여러분은 펀드레이징과 혁신이라는 두 가지 단어의 조합이 이루어낼 수 있는 사례들 중에서 어떤 것이 가장 먼저 생각나십 니까? 펀드레이징 플래쉬몹? 크라우드 펀딩? 사례 하나하나를 다 따지고 보면 정말 많은 창의적인 형식들의 펀드레이징이 있 습니다. 하지만 저는 '전략성'을 생각할 때, 펀드레이징에서 가 장 중요한 몇 가지 원칙들에 기반을 둔 사례들만 엮어서 다루도 록 하겠습니다. 기본기에 충실하고 자신의 창의성만 있다면 무 궁무진한 아이디어가 나올 것입니다!

What comes into your head when you look at cases that combine 'fundraising' and 'innovation'?

Fundraising flash mob? Crowd funding? There are many creative methods of fundraising when we look into it very closely. For today's cases, however, we will consider 'strategic' aspects and deal with cases based on some very crucial principles. With strong basic knowledge and creativity, endless ideas can be created! 예전에 제가 개인적으로 '전략적 펀드레이징 워크숍'이라는 곳에 참석한 적이 있었습니다. 그때 얘기했던 내용 중 핵심은 명확한 목표, 효율성, 그리고 스마트한 전략이었습니다. 그리고 (오늘 얘기할) 스마트한 전략은 이렇게 네 가지로 나눠 정리할 수 있을 것 같습니다:

When I personally attended the 'Strategic Fundraising Workshop,' the main points were making clear goals, efficiency and smart strategies.

For smart strategies (that we are going to discuss today), they can be categorized into the following four aspects: 1) 7의 법칙 (rule of seven): 고전적 마케팅 전략이다. 자신 이 마케팅 하고자 하는 상품을 듣던, 보던, 만지던 7번을 이렇 게 접하게 만들면 살 수 밖에 없게 된다는 마케팅. 펀드레이징 에도 해당 될 수 있다.

2) '당신'이 만든 변화: 기부자가 만든 변화가 무엇인지, 그리 고 그게 왜 중요한 변화인지 친절히 설명하라. 그런 변화를 설 명하기 위한 생동감 있는 스토리나 사진을 모아라 (그리고 파일 을 만들라고 하시더군요).

3) 체험적 기부: 스스로 자신이 도와주는 사람의 처지의 삶 한복판에 들어가서 체험하게 해주거나, 혹은 그렇게 못할 경우 적어도 도와주는 사람과의 상호관계의 구도를 만들어라.

4) 오감적 체험: 단순히 시각 (혹은 한 가지 감각)으로 느끼기 보다는 다양한 감각으로 느끼게 해주어라.

1) Rule of Seven: this is a classic marketing strategy. It is a marketing strategy where the prospective buyer purchases the product no matter what when they hear or see the marketing message at least seven times. Fundraising can also be included.

2) Changes made by 'You': explains the changes that the donator has created, and why that change is important. To explain those changes, collecting lively stories or photos (and make files) are necessary.

3) Experiential Donation: Have donators put their shoes in those who need help. If not possible, have those who need help at least create mutual relationships with donators.

4) Experience with the Five Senses: Rather than feel with the sense of sight, make donators feel with various senses. '전략성'에 있어서 체험의 구도로 기부자들을 모으는 게 얼

These principles imply how important experiential structures play a role in gathering donators when considering 'strategic' aspects. So, what are some successful cases in fundraising with these structures? Today, I would like to divide into three cases: 'Famine 24,' 'Living Below the Line Project' and ‘Homeless Experience Documentary’ by a German non-profit organization fiftyfifty.

This project requires participants to eat only with the average food expense of the poor, which is US$1.50 (about 1600 won) per day. The guideline for the project, shown on the webpage is very strict.

For example, the webpage provides a table that shows monetary conversions of salt and pepper. Not only that, the webpage also encourages participants to upload videos and recipes. I think that these small but detailed attentions were the driving forces for the project's success.

Famine 24 is an experiencing and donating campaign by international, non-profit organization World Vision, which aims for aid and development.

Participants for this campaign experience starvation for 24 hours, which is an indirect real life experience of famine in the world. All expenses for meals in the 24 hours are naturally given away to programs that help the famine. 또한 굶는 동안 여러 가지 체험 이벤트를 진행한다고 합니다. 긴급구호 영양죽 먹어보기, 에이즈 체험관 등, 여러 방면으로 기아들의 아픔을 겪어볼 수 있는 체험의 기회가 있다고 합니다.

Also, various experience events are held while starving. Events include eating nutrient porridge for emergency relief, and AIDS experience center, in which participants can experience the pain that the people who struggle with starvation feel.

Living Below the Line 프로젝트는 집에서도 할 수 있습니 다. 지금까지 전 세계 인구 중 약 14억 명이 이 프로젝트에 참여 했다고 하는데, 한국에선 아직 비교적 알려지지 않았습니다.

Living Below the Line Project can be done at home. Until now, over 1.4 million people have participated in the project, but it is not yet well known in Korea. 이 프로젝트는 전 세계 빈곤계층의 하루 평균 식비 ($1.50: 약 1600원)를 책정하여, 그들처럼 하루에 1600원을 가지고 식 사를 해결하는 프로젝트라고 합니다. 홈페이지에서 제공하는

This case is about a documentary made by a German non-profit organization, fiftyfifty. Normally, when we think of a documentary, we just think of it as a film that we see only with our eyes. The Homeless Experience Documentary, however, heightens the 'class' of experience. 겨울에 상영된 이 다큐멘터리는 관객들을 위한 난방을 아예 가동하지 않는다고 합니다. 눈앞에 보이는 추위에 떠는 노숙자 들처럼 관객들도 추위에 오들오들 떨면서 그들처럼 생활하는 체험을 하는 것입니다.

The documentary was played during winter, and the viewers had no heaters while the documentary was played. So viewers experienced the extreme conditions that homeless people had to go through while watching the documentary shown in front of their eyes. 그리고 관객들의 자리에는 이불 쪼가리가 있습니다. 이불 쪼 가리 마다 바로 기부할 수 있는 QR코드를 새겨놓았다고 합니 다. 오들오들 추위에서 떠는 가운데 이불 하나가 얼마나 따뜻한 지, 그래서 노숙자들을 위해서 적어도 이불 값이라도 내야겠다 는 사람의 따뜻한 마음을 자극하는 체험이 아닌가 싶습니다.

Also, every seat has a small blanket with a QR code where viewers can instantly make donations.

This allows the viewers to see how priceless a small blanket can be in freezing conditions, and with that it stimulates the warm heart of the viewers and induce them to make donations for at least a small blanket. 우리 사회적 탐험가 여러분은 펀드레이징과 기부에 어떤 혁 신적 아이디어가 있으십니까? 저는 물론, 지금까지 말한 사례 들도 혁신이지만, 가장 큰 혁신의 근간은 모든 인류가 가지고 있는 공감하는 마음, 사랑하는 마음, 연대하는 마음이 아닐까 싶습니다.

강남역셀리어학원 시간 (Time) 과 돈 (Money)은 셀 수 있을까 없을까 ? From SELI. 어느 정도 영문법에 익숙해진 영어 학습자들이 가장 많이 하는 질문 중 하나가 바로 두 명사 ( 시간과 돈 )의 종류에 대한 내용이다. ‘ 시간과 돈은 불가산 명사이니 절대 many와는 함께 쓸 수 없다.’ 라고 명시해둔 책들이 제법 많은 것 같은데 과연, 시간과 돈은 셀 수 없는 명사이기만 한 걸까 ? 자, 쇼핑을 갔다고 가정해 보자. 마음에 드는 바지 한 벌을 눈에 들어 온다. 사이즈도 사이즈지만 대다수 소비자들이 가장 먼저 궁금 해 하는건 ‘가격’일 것이다. 여러분들은 ‘ 저, 바지 얼마예요 ? ’를 영어로 어떻게 물어 볼 것인가 ? 속 으로 이랬을 것이다. (아마도 대다수는) “ How much is the pants ? ” 그래, 일단 How much로 시작 하는 것은 맞다. 하지만 바지는 하나의 명사야 아니면 한 벌의 명사 야? 한국어야 하나든 한 벌이든 한 쌍이든 수에 대한 구분없이 표현하지만 영어의 핵심 중 하나는 ‘수에 대한 명확한 구분’ 이잖아. 바지는 두 갱의 덩어리로 이루어진 한 벌의 명사지.. 바지 한 가랑이만 살 수는 없잖아. 그러니, 바지, 안경, 가위처럼 분리가 되지 않는 명사들은 그 자체 로 복수로 봐야지. 그러니, 문장 내 동사도 또 명사를 꾸미는 단어도 ‘복수’를 위한 것들로 바꿔줘야지. 자, 다시 물어보자. ‘ 저 바지 얼마예요 ?’ 영어로 어떻게 ?

다들 본 적 있을 거야. ‘there’ 그럼 문장을 완성 해 봐야지.

10개의 사물이 놓여 있는 것이니 s 붙이는 것도 잊지 말아야지 ! 물건의 가격을 표현 하는 돈은 ‘하나의 가격’으로 정해지는데다가 눈으로 볼 수 있거나 만질 수 있는 개체의 속성을 지진 명사가 아니기에 셀 수 없는 명사로 분류. 하지만, 지폐나 동전처럼 눈에 보이고 만져지는 개체의 속성을 지닐 때는 책을 한 권 두 권 셀 수 있는 것처럼 돈도 셀 수 있는 명사로 분류가 되는 거야. 이 정도의 설명만 이해가 되어도 명사 분류 방법에 대한 막연하더라도 어떤 감이 올거야. 자, 시간에 대한 이야기를 통해서 이 부분에 대한 확실한 이해를 다져보자. 하루는 몇 시간이지 ? 일 년은 몇 시간이지 ?

24시간으로 이루어진 하루.

365일로 이루어진 일 년.

“ How much are those pants ? ” 이해 됐지 !!

토익 시험에 주어진 시간은 단 2시간. 자, 하루라는 이름표에 할당 된 시간이 여러 개야 아니면 딱 하나야 ?

24시간. 단 하나지. 하나라는 말 자체가 곧 ‘양’이라는 뜻이야.

＄ 85. 95 저 파란 바지는 85불 95 센트.

＄ 75. 50 ‘ 이 하얀 바지는 75불 50센트 ’

우리가 사려는 하나의 제품에는 하나의 가격만 매겨져 있잖아. 여러 개의 가격 중 하나를 고르는 것이 아니잖아. 하나의 제품에 매겨진 하나의 가격은 결국 ‘수’가 아닌 ‘양’을 표현 하는 거잖아. 파란 바지의 가격은 하얀 바지의 가격 보다 더 ‘높은 수, 즉 더 비싼 가격’ 이지 더 많은 수의 가격이 아니니까. 정확하게 말하면 돈(Money)이 제품의 가격을 표현 하는 금액일 때는 셀 수 없는 명사로 분류되는 것 이 맞아. 이 설명이 이해 되는 순간 ‘ 아, 이래서 돈은 셀 수 없다고 하는 구나. ’ 라고 생각 하는 분들도 분명 계 실 테지만 이 말은 온전히 다 맞다 고는 할 수 없어. 왜 ? 만약, 탁자 위에

저 캔 안에, 저 컵 안에 커피가 반 만 차 있든, 3분의 1만 차 있든, 아니면 8부만 차 있든 개수로 보면 몇 개 ? 그렇지. 하나잖아. 양은 달라져도 개수는 하나지. 그래서 ‘셀 수 없는 명사는 단수 취급’ 이라는 표현을 쓰는데 ..... 꼭 그렇지만은 않아. (이런 부분에 대한 설명은 너무 길기에 지금은 이 만큼만) 시간도 하루나 일 년처럼 한 단위에 붙어서 그 시간의 이름을 표현 하는 경우 ( 제품의 가격을 표현하 는 것처럼 )는 당연히 셀 수 없는 명사인거야. 하지만, 시간을 구성 하는 초, 분, 시간 등은 일 분 이 분 삼 분 이렇게 셀 수가 있지. 그래서 두 시간 30분 50초를 영어로 표현 하면 2 hours, 30 minutes, and 50 seconds. 가 되는 거야. 한국인 영어 학습자들의 취약점인 명사 ‘수’에 대해 효과적이고 정확하게 익히려면 절대 절대 이해가 우선이 되어야 해.

저 만큼의 돈이 있다고 가정 해 보자. 저 지폐 뭉치와 동전들은 ‘하나, 둘, 셋, 넷 ’ 하고 셀 수 있을까 없을까 ? 당연히 .... 있지. 저 동전이 얼마짜리 인지는 모르겠지만 개수로 봤을 때 한 열 개 정도의 동전이 보 일거야. 저 100불짜리 지폐 한 묶음이 100장 일 수 있지.

100장 짜리 지폐 4묶음이라는 표현은 개수로 셋을 때 얻을 수 있는 표현이잖아. 그렇기 때문에 돈은 셀 수 있는 명사 이기도 하고 셀 수 없는 명사 이기도 해. 경우에 따라 바뀐다는 것을 명심 !

추상명사, 집합명사, 보통명사, 무슨 명사, 무슨 명사 ... 이따위 용어들은 조금도 중요치 않아. 핵심은 단수 복수를 정확히 구분해 내는 것이 명사 학습의 핵심이야. 암기가 아닌 이해로 영문법을 넘어 영어를 익혀나가 는 것이 설유진 영문법의 강의의 핵심. 돈과 시간을 어떻게 분류하는지 어느 정도 감이 왔다 면 평소 회화 연습 때 반드시 활용해 보도록. ^^
