The 16th Boryeong Mud Festival kicked off* on July 19 at Daecheon Beach. Until July 28, participants can enjoy all sorts of mud entertainment, from concerts to exhibitions and hands-on experience.

The mud used at the festival,

which is also used to manufacture cosmetics*, is considered rich in minerals.

Since 1998, the Boryeong Mud Festival, which originally functioned as a promotional* event for cosmetics produced using mud

from the Boryeong mud flats*, has evolved into a cultural gathering of both foreign and domestic communities in Korea. As of 2007, the festival attracted 2.2 million visitors to Boryeong City.

Other attractions at the festival

include mud baths, mud mobscenes, mud pool slides and color mud body-painting, among many others.

According to a research published in the Psychological Science journal, spatial skills* play a critical role in future creativity and innovation in addition to math and language skills.

Researchers from Vanderbilt University studied what 13-yearolds who had taken both the SAT and Differential Aptitude Test which measures spatial ability came to be 30 years later.

Those minors SAT scores all ranked in the top 0.5 percent. The study results showed that those who received exceptional SAT scores became famous in academics and patent fields as expected.

In fact, people who excelled in spatial skills demonstrated* stronger

correlations* with high achievement in technology and science fields.

Researchers suggested measuring such skills should also be considered in standardized tests like the SAT and ACT. Dr. David C. Geary from the University of Missouri added that evaluating spatial skills were not included in academic curriculum because it was understood as cognitive ability.

He suggested the necessity to put emphasis on spatial skills since its contribution to STEM (Science, technology, engineering and math) fields became clear.

었다. 연구진들은 이 같은 결과가 공간지각능력 측정 또한 SAT나 ACT와 같은 전통적인 시험 체제의 고려대상이 되어야 한다는 것을 시사 한다고 말했다. 기어리 박사는 그 동안 공간지각능력이 인 지능력 차원에서 이해되어왔기 때문에 공식 적인 학습 커리큘럼에 포함되지 못했다고 덧 붙였다. 그는 또한 공간지각능력이 STEM(과학, 기 술, 공학, 수학) 분야의 발전에 크게 기여할 수 있는 점이 분명해진 만큼 이 같은 능력의 발달에 더욱 주목해야 한다고 말했다.

by Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council and the Gates Foundation invented a fuel cell* that uses urine* as an electricity-generating source to charge cellphones.

According to the Physical Chemistry Chemical Physics journal, researchers used general bacteria which break down the sugar and other chemicals in urine to generate electricity.

So far the fuel cells are larger than car batteries, but researchers are expecting and aiming at making smaller and portable versions. Also, they added that a relatively small amount of energy drawn from this fuel cell is enough to support social

network messaging, web browsing and a brief phone call.

However, they are hoping that this technology reaches the point where people can use their cellphones charged by urine for longer periods.

These fuel cells are significant in a sense that they can be used for diverse applications. In addition to their use in bathrooms to provide electricity for domestic devices like showers and lighting, they also have practical use for helping to generate power for remote regions in developing countries.

Despite some worries over utilizing these fuel cells, there is also great meaning in that we regenerate the energy from the wastes.

According to a study, people listening to sad music feel positive emotions, a seemingly ironic find.

The study, conducted by the Ai Kawakami research team from the University of Tokyo and the RIKEN Brain Science Institute, provided possible reasons why we listen to sad music, despite it evoking sad and unpleasant emotions.

The researchers hypothesized* that perceived emotion and felt emotion could be different, and they asked 44 participants to rate 62 descriptive words or phrases to what they perceived and felt while listening to sad music.

National Assembly Speaker Rep. Kang Chang-hee raised the issue of revising the Constitution, the possibility of it becoming a priority* next year.Kang said on July 17, “It would be right to make constitutional revision a public issue from early next year and to conclude the matter within the 19th National Assembly.”

“In revising the Constitution, all factions* should participate with their sights not only on the power structure but on Korea’s future for the next 100 years,” Kang added,

emphasizing on the right opportunity for revision.

Constitutional revision was an issue during last year’s presidential election campaign. Over 100 lawmakers discussed the matter earlier this year, but a governmental committee has yet to be formalized.

One of the key revisions was to allow two presidential terms, supported by both President Park Geun-hye and Rep. Moon Jae-in of the Democratic United Party during their campaigns.

President Park promised to push for revision with public agreement during her campaign, and argued that allowing two terms would contribute to “policy continuance and preventing corruption.”

Moon also supported the revision, concurring with Park on allowing two terms and reducing the president’s authority.

Recently, however, the president has expressed concerns that discussing the revision could divert resources away from social and inter-

Korean issues.

The Constitution has changed on a number of occasions with regards to the number of presidential terms. The Yushin Constitution was introduced in 1972 by the late Park Chung-hee, enabling him to remain in office indefinitely*.

The Constitution was changed again under Chun Doo-hwan in 1980, making the term seven years.

Currently, the presidential term is a single, five-year term.

Smaller bonuses, longer summer breaks

A survey showed that office workers will receive lower vacation* bonuses but longer summer breaks due to the economic recession.

According to a poll on 551 companies conducted by the Korea Employers Federation on July 16, office workers will get an average 4.3 days of summer vacation this

year, the longest since 2009.

Of those companies, 28.8 percent of them reasoned because of production cuts, while 23.7 percent said to reduce costs.

Other reasons were to treat staff better (27.1 percent) and 20.3 percent said due to new management labor agreements.

설문 조사에 의하면 경기 침체로 회사원들은 적은 여 름휴가 보너스를 받는 대신 긴 휴가를 받을 것으로 나타 났다.

Fuel efficiency standard will rise starting in 2020

Government officials said on July 15 of its move to toughen* minimum fuel efficiency standards for automobiles. The efforts are for lowering energy consumption and reducing greenhouse gases.

The government will raise the minimum fuel efficiency requirement of passenger vehicles to 20 kilometers per liter (km/L) from 2020, officials from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy said.

Currently, there are no such requirements, though a 17 km/ L efficiency requirement will be enforced starting in 2015.

Failure to follow the minimum requirements by auto manufacturers will be subject to a fine, the ministry said.

The move is also similar to other developed countries’* fuel efficiency standards.

“The proposed minimum requirement was set after considering global trends and the country’s development capacity,” the officials said.

The United States will begin enforcing similar moves to only allow the sale of vehicles meeting the minimum fuel efficiency of 23.9 km/L in 2025. Japan will begin in 2020, requiring a fuel efficiency of 20.3 km/L. The move may boost the development of hybrid or cleanenergy vehicles, such as electric and fuel cell vehicles.

지난 15일 정부 관계자들이 에너지 소비와 온실가스를 줄이기 위해 차량 평균연비 기준 이 앞으로 더 강화될 것이라고 발표했다. 산업통상자원부 관계자들은 정부가 자동차 평균연비 기준을 20km/L 이상으로 높일 예 정이라고 했다. 현재 국내엔 이같은 평균연비 기준이 존재 하지 않지만 2015년 부터는 평균연비 기준 이 17km/L 로 정해진다. 또한 평균연비 기준을 충족하지 못하는 자 동차 업체에는 과태료가 부과된다.

이런 계획은 다른 선진국 평균연비 기준과 흡사하다. 정부 관계자들은 국제적인 추세와 국내 기술 개발 능력을 고려한 후 내린 결정 이라고 말했다. 미국 역시 2025년부터 연비가23.9km/L 이상인 자동차만 판매하는 방안을 추진중이 고 일본도 2020년부터 26.5km/L의 기준치 를 적용할 예정이다. 이러한 방안은 전기 자동차와 연료전지 자 동차 등 하이브리드 친환경 자동차 개발에 박차를 가할것이라고 예상된다.

On July 15, the Ministry of Justice has introduced a bill revising the Commercial Act that would limit the powers of conglomerate leaders, whom have gained a tyrannical* reputation.

The bill would strengthen the authority of conglomerate boards of directors* and audit boards to monitor and manage directly. The bill also introduces a voting system to increase strength and rights of other shareholders*.

The bill targets the current structure of major conglomerates that dominate the Korean market

like Samsung, SK, LG, Hyundai, Hanhwa and Kumho. The presidents of the conglomerates’ subsidiaries* are also heavily influenced by the heads of their respective groups.

Currently, the structures of companies’ boards of directors have no real function except to stamp the chair’s decisions. They do not monitor the actions of management and do not provide a check to its power.

The bill is expected to be submitted to the National Assembly before the end of 2013.

ICONZ Media presents Hip Hop All Stars’ rap battles 아이콘즈 미디어에서 선보이는 힙합 올스타 랩 배틀 Article by Becky Hale Translation by Choi Su-min

On every third Friday of the month rap battlers and spectators unite at Itaewon’s Club Flow to witness* Hip Hop All Stars’ head-to-head battles by artists who get two weeks to prepare material before putting their hard work and good name on the line to be judged and ranked.

This event came to fruition in June of this year when 31-year-

old ICONZ Media CEO, Jeremy Rondell, was contacted by artist Black Moss who wanted to get on stage and battle in an event with prepared material. A contact put Rondell in touch with a battler named Syco who accepted the challenge.

Different from a freestyle event, battling with prepared rap material

was something new to ICONZ’s territory* and an interesting organizing experience for ICONZ’s director of entertainment, Ian Curtis, 34, who manages artists and DJs, as well as produces and promotes* the show.

According to Rondell, “People should come to the [monthly] event to get a new experience of what it

feels like to see two MCs head-tohead battling. There’s a lot of work that goes into this. MCs are judged on lyrics, stage presence, punch lines, etc.”

he country is up in arms over the ongoing National Intelligence Service scandal.

The mainstream media is under fire for biased coverage. The previous government continues to be a source of controversy. President Lee “Bulldozer” Myung-bak has surely settled the question of his legacy; no historian will remember him to be an inconsequential chief executive after this.

There was the Four Rivers Project, a project that envisaged destroying the country’s ecological system while profiting his construction industry brethren in tandem with the bureaucracy at its accommodating and laissez-faire best. Standing out among his other accomplishments vying for national remediation, however, is the eventful tenure of his intelligence chief appointee Won Se-hoon, a gift that keeps on giving, a man whose stint at the country’s premier intelligence agency should be an instructive case study for his successors, who, we can only desperately hope, will learn the right lessons and recognize his time for the debacle it has been.

The former Hyundai man and presidential candidate of 747 fame, if charges against his spy chief are proved correct, helped pave the way for current president Park in last year’s elections by, among other things, vigorously waging an online campaign on her behalf. communism intimately. The youth of the democratization movement braved bullets, tear gas, batons and torture. The problems they marched against, however, were also relatively straightforward and clear—dictatorship was wrong and had to go. Today, the problems we face, as a country, as a region, and as a planet—are not as straightforward, but are undeniably as grave as any our fathers and grandfathers had to overcome. Environmental and energy challenges that require unprecedented global cooperation and mutual sacrifice. A growingly uncertain security climate worldwide after a very short unipolar hiatus afforded by the implosion of the USSR. The budgetary boomerang effect anticipated from the twin forces of over-aging and greater welfare spending, coupled with slowing growth domestically and internationally.

The problems are complex because they are not of an adversarial nature; there are no good guys and bad guys. The overheated competition for jobs and qualifications is not helping either, but in a society like ours, well-endowed in human capital but short on other resources, if its youth are not invested in the process of public policy ideas and reforms, whether it is fixing the justice system, in particular the politicized office of prosecutor; or lessening the haves-haves-not gap; reforming a consumptive education system that no parent or student is satisfied with; healing the environment; or breathing new life into the quagmire that is diplomacy with Pyongyang and Tokyo, the youth will not see an improvement in their immediate condition, in their opportunities to succeed, if they do not engage with issues that, for example, may not concern their immediate condition but touch upon those who happen to be more vulnerable, or matters of constitutional architecture that houses their rights and liberties, which look abstract on paper until one personally feels the pain of their violation after the passing of some dubious decree or legislation.

The International Artists Community will present the Urban Heat exhibition from Tuesday, July 23 to Sunday, August 4 at Gallery Golmok (Alleyway) in Itaewon, Seoul.

Bringing together 13 visual artists from nine countries with the central subject of summer heat, this exhibition explores the question of how city dwellers survive the hot temperatures that hover* in concrete jungles like Seoul.

On July 28, an explosively good show will come to town that will bring artists* together to perform artistic pieces representing things that go BOOM! The Encyclopedia Show is a themed variety show that started in Chicago five years ago by artists Robb Q. Teifer and Shanny Jean Manny and now consists of 15 different chapters*, the Seoul chapter being the first international one.

a country where the urban population is over 80 percent, it goes without saying that the majority of Korea’s 50 million people are out-of-touch with the concept of farming and rural lifestyle.

In fact, it’s fair to say that most people here are probably unaware* of what kind of work and processes go into producing their food.

For city dwellers that are curious about organic farming, aren’t afraid of getting their hands dirty and want an authentic farming experience, a WWOOF exchange might be what you’re looking for.

World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms started in 1971 in

England when Sue Coppard, who was living and working in London, wanted to get to the countryside and partake in the organic* movement.

She organized a weekend for four people on the bio dynamic farm at Emerson College in Sussex.

To d a y W W O O F h o s t s c a n be found in over 100 countries, including Korea.

According to Kota Fukuyama, an organizer of WWOOF Korea, this exchange experience first came to Korea in 1997 and there are currently about 55 WWOOF hosts that invite participants, known as WWOOFers, to come to their organic farms to work.

The weekend experience is a non-

monetary exchange that offers the host some temporary workers while WWOOFers get lodging, food and, of course, an organic farming experience. In fact, the only fee involved is a registration fee and an optional service that will hook up potential WWOOFers with hosts.

According to Fukuyama, the focus is on organic farming “because organic is mostly eco-friendly and sustainable [and] organic farming and eco-friendly lifestyles need hands.”

From October 1 to 6, the first ever International Residents Cooking Contests, part of the international Slow Food festival called AsiO Gusto that represents all of Asia and Oceania, will be held in Namyangju City with support of the local city government, and WWOOF as the administrator. The contest will feature dishes prepared by international residents.

The goal of the contest is to promote Slow Food, which, in the words of Fukuyama, “is about connection with producers, the environment and land.”

Holler! Bonafide is in the house! Vacation season is on and people are making plans to knock off all their stress that’s been accumulating over the months. Lovers would have a time of their life, and for our singles don’t worry! It’s the season of “Summer Flings!” Well, I know Korean culture is more about finding true love and finding someone to marry, but we all meet different kinds of people, whether it was a good experience or a bad one.

Also, facing the truth, there are many relationships and people who just want to have fun or enjoy their time. Many might disagree, but that’s just how people are, and I just want people to be more honest. I don’t encourage people to be sleazy or promiscuous, because I do believe in true love.

However, I despise people who wear masks and pretend they are affectionate and caring when they are just lecherous people. So this week, I would like to introduce you to some songs that might be sexual but shows much culture and reality. These kinds of songs are neither popular nor approved in Korean culture. JYP (Jin-young Park) once came out with an album calling sex a “game” and made sexually oriented songs. Although I was a minor I thought the songs were very refreshing and phenomenal, but the media degraded him by calling him a pervert.

He later explained why he stated so, but sometimes the Korean music industry is too phony. We had artists who made songs about beautiful love, but later were accused of sexual assault on minors, or artists that got caught entering brothels. Why do these artists act like they are innocent and pure when what their lives represent isn’t? This is why I would rather have rappers talk about sex, drugs and drinking because it carries more truth than the phony love songs. I am glad Korean rappers like LeeSSang came up with songs like, “Turned off the TV” since it was not only sexual but also a great hit in the Korean community. The world is changing, and people are becoming smarter and more aware—so the music industry should realize, they can’t move people with lies. Enjoy.

안녕하십니까? 보나파이드 입니다. 그동안 받은 스트레스를 몽땅 풀어버릴 수 있는 휴가철이 왔습니다. 커플들은 즐거운 시 간을 보내겠지만, 싱글들 또한 걱정 마십시오! 여름철이니까 요! 한국인 정서상 사랑하는 사람을 찾고 싶어하고 결혼을 하고 싶어하지만, 우리 모두 살다 보면 이런 사람 저런 사람 만나게 되고, 좋고 나쁜 경험을 하게되죠. 하지만 모두 결혼을 전제로 만나는 건 아니기 때문에 때로는 그런 걱정 없이 즐거움을 추구 하는 것도 나쁘지 않다는 생각이 듭니다. 저도 진정한 사랑을 믿는 사람으로서, 사람들이 음란해지고 가벼워지기 바라는 마 음은 결코 아닙니다. 하지만 겉으로는 애정넘치고 애착을 가지 면서 속으로는 흑심을 품는 사람들을 비판하고 싶습니다. 그래 서 이번 주에는 사랑과 성에 관해 솔직하고 현실적인 노래들을 소개하려 합니다. 사실 이런 노래들은 우리나라 정서에 그리 맞 지 않고 받아들여지지 않는 편입니다. 예전에 박진영이 섹스를 ’게임’이라 부르며 각종 성적인 노래를 수록곡으로한 앨범을 내 기도 했었는데, 제가 들었을 땐 참신하고 신선한 느낌이 들었습 니다. 하지만 역시나 대중과 미디어는 그를 ’변태’라 칭하며 비 판하곤 했죠. 나중에 박진영이 그 말에 대해 스스로 변호했지 만 대중의 시선은 따가웠습니다. 하지만 대중가요가 사실 너무 진실되지 못한 것도 인지해야 합니다. 우리는 그동안 수많은 아 름다운 노래들을 부르고 만든 아티스트들이 정작 성매매, 성폭 력, 원조교제 등 아주 방탕한 모습들을 봐오면서 겉으로는 온갖 순수하고 깔끔한척하는 모습들이 역겹다는 생각이 듭니다. 미 국에는 섹스, 마약, 음주 등을 소재로 한 수많은 노래들이 있지 만, 그 노래들의 아티스트들 중에는 자신의 삶에 빗대어 솔직하 게 노래를 만들고자 하는 이들도 있습니다. 하지만 그렇지 못한 아티스트들은 얼마나 허구적이고 이중적입니까? 그래서 근래 들어 리쌍의 ’TV를 껐네’같은 노래가 흥행하는걸 보면 우리나 라 사람들도 점점 더 솔직하고 진솔한 노래를 좋아하게 되는 것 같아 마음이 놓입니다. 세상은 변하고, 사람들의 지식도 풍부해 지고 있습니다. 언제까지나 거짓의 울타리 안에 갇힐 순 없습니 다. 그럼 좋은 한주 되십시오.

eet Paul Sharkie. This 27-year-old from Edinburgh, Scotland works in the Foreign Customer Department at Shinhan Bank. Paul lives in Itaewon where he frequents coffee shops and eateries like T.G. Brunch Café and Suji’s to relax.

When it is time to let loose and get the spirits flowing, you can find him in places like “PROST” or “Between.” One of Paul’s favorite aspects of Korean culture is how welcoming Koreans are to foreigners that are willing to adapt.

스코틀랜드 에든버러 출신의 폴 샤키(27) 는 신한 은행 외국인 고객 부서에서 근무 한다. 그는 이태원에 살면서 커피숍, T.G. Brunch Café와 Suji’s와 같은 음식점에 자 주 들러 휴식을 취한다. 몸을 풀며 정신 없이 즐길 때는 PROST나 Between같은 곳에서 그를 찾아볼 수 있다. 폴이 가장 좋아하는 한 국 문화의 특징은 적응을 하고자 하는 외국 인에게 한국인들은 우호적으로 대한다는 것 이다.

직장에서의 일과에 대해 말씀해주세요.

Thus far, my days are never basic.

If I [have] to describe an average day it would be this: I come in at around 8:10 a.m., say ‘hello’ to my team and do a simple customary bow and greeting to my boss (head of department). Then I like to tackle the numerous customer queries we get via our social media sites.

The rest of the day might involve helping with translation issues and making materials to be used in our branches. Quite often I am required to visit different branches all over the country to make sure their multilingual Global Desks are wellacquainted with our department.

Most recently, I was in Jeju presenting for a British company alongside my boss (deputy chief). 아직까지는 일반적인 날이 없었어요. 일과 를 설명하자면 오전 8시 10분쯤 사무실에 도 착해 팀원들과 인사를 나누고 부장님께 간단 히 관례적인 인사를 드려요. 그러고 나서 소 셜 미디어 사이트에 올라오는 수많은 고객들

의 문의사항들을 해결하죠. 남은 시간에는 번역을 돕는다던가 저희 지사들에서 쓰일 자 료를 만들거나 해요. 저는 종종 국내의 다른 지사들을 방문하여 그들의 다중 언어 글로벌 데스크가 저희 부서와 잘 연결되어 있는지를 확인하러 다녀야 해요. 가장 최근에는 제주 도에서 저희 차장님과 함께 영국 회사를 상 대로 발표를 했지요.

러한 차이를 줄여나가기 위해 노력하는 것은 제 몫이에요. 저는 남들보다 더 좋지도, 나쁘 지도 않은 대우를 받고 싶기 때문에 사교성 을 키우고 가능한 한 많은 사람들을 만나보 려고 노력해요.

9 to 6 is what I have on paper but I usually make it in shortly after 8 a.m. and leave around 7 p.m. This is not something that I resent. It is essential that one does show commitment in Korea. As a ”foreigner” (I try to avoid the “F” word), it would be easy for me to expect to follow the contract verbatim—indeed, in many respects we all do—but when it comes to working hours, coming in a little early and leaving a little late is the norm. I know that other people have it much worse but my team is good at making sure we all leave between 7 to 8 p.m. 서류상 근무시간은 9시부터 6시지만 저는 일반적으로 8시가 조금 지나서 출근하고 오 후 7시 정도에 퇴근해요. 저는 이에 대한 불 만은 없어요. 한국에서 개인이 헌신적으로 일하는 것은 필수적이라고 생각하거든요. 외 국인으로서 제가 계약서에 써있는 대로 되길 바라는 것이 쉽겠지만 - 사실 우리 모두가 그렇지만 - 근무 시간에 대해서는 조금 일찍 출근하고 조금 늦게 퇴근하는 것은 일반적이 에요. 다른 사람들은 이보다 더 심하지만 저 희 팀은 모두가 7시에서 8시 사이에 맞춰 퇴 근할 수 있도록 해요.

Yes, but it’s expected as I am the only westerner in the HQ. However, it is my duty to try and bridge those differences. ny funny communication mishaps?

Sometimes I will ask a question without first addressing the person I’m talking to. It goes unanswered and even unheard! Putting this into context, in a room of 12 people working silently, I speak out in English and the room stays silent resulting in my red face and a repeat of the question. Lesson learned— don’t assume the person next you will know you are addressing them. 저는 가끔 저와 대화하고 있는 상대를 호 칭하지 않고 질문을 하곤 해요. 대부분의 경 우, 그 질문은 대답 없이 무시되기 일쑤죠.

hat do you hope to gain from your experience working at your current job?

현재 직업에서 얻은 경험을 통해 무엇을 얻길 바랍니까?

In addition to ensuring that banking for international residents becomes less of a chore, I hope to gain greater insight into the Korean and global corporate set-up. I hope to learn a sufficient amount of Korean so that one day I may lead a career that keeps me in both London and Seoul. 외국인 거주자들의 은행 업무가 더 용이해 지도록 하고 한국과 세계 기업들의 체제를 이해할 수 있었으면 해요. 그리고 한국어를 충분히 배워서 미래에 제가 런던과 서울을 오가며 할 수 있는 일을 하고 싶어요.

Have you heard of the “skin-color” crayons?

There might be generational differences, but the “skin-color” had been one of the most popular colors of crayons until recently.

through the help of the National Human Rights Commission of Korea. The companies that produced crayons accepted the petition and changed the name of the color right away.

Dear readers of the Corea Courier, Today, I would like to address the issue of racial discrimination, which sickens our society with feelings of hatred and distress. Among many cases of racial discrimination, I would like to point out one case that hold implications of cultural discrimination, and discuss its societal context.

제가 어릴 때는, 사람을 그릴 때마다 항상 '살색' 크레파스 를 찾았습니다. 또 항상 하도 많이 써서 가장 빨리 닳게 되는 색깔이기도 했습니다.

'살색' 크레파스의 사례가 우리에게 시사하는 바는 무엇일 까요?

여러분, 점점 많은 다문화 가정이 한국에 뿌리내리고 한국 인이 되고 있는 사실을 아시나요? 2012년 한국에 결혼한 커 플 중 10쌍에 1쌍은 다문화 혼인이었다고 합니다. 그리고 다 문화 가정에서 태어난 유아는 그해 태어난 유아의 1/20 을 차지했다고 합니다.

Do any of the readers know about the fact that Korea is becoming a multicultural society?

In 2012, one out of 10 married couples was multicultural. Moreover, infants born from that family were 5 percent out of the total. 그런데도 인종과 민족에 대한 닫힌 생각을 가지고 아직도 노골적인 차별이 사회적으로 드러나는 것을 보니 참 안타깝 습니다.

Despite these social trends, blatant cases of discrimination that hold dogmatic implications regarding race and ethnicity in our society is heart-rending to watch. 노골적 차별을 뒷받침하는 것은 사실, 개선되어야 할 우리 의 의식일 텐데요. 그러한 의식을 적나라하게 보여준 것이 ‘살색 크레파스’의 예시가 아닐까 싶습니다.

Perhaps, the blatant cases of discrimination would have been based on our collectively discriminatory consciousness. The best example that embodies such consciousness may be the “sal-saek (skin-color)” crayon.

여러분은 살색 크레파스를 아시나요? 세대별로 다를 것 같 긴 하지만, 살색 크레파스는 예전에 상당히 인기있는 색깔 중 하나였습니다.

When I was young, I used to find the skincolored crayon when I drew a person. It used to be the first color that wore away. 어릴 적에는 아무런 문제의식 없이 썼습니다. ‘나’의 살색, 주위의 많은 친구들, 그리고 더 나아가 '모든' (이라고 생각했 던) 한국인들 살을 표현하는 색깔이었기 때문에 사람을 그릴 때 많이 썼습니다.

I used the crayon without thinking. Because the color represented my skin color, of my friends and of all—what I used to think—Koreans, I used it most when I was drawing pictures of people. 하지만 모든 사람의 ‘살’색이 ‘살색’일까요?

However, are people's skin color really the color of the crayon that we commonly know?

What does the case of the skin-colored crayon imply to us? 저는 '차별'의 일상성에 주목하고 싶습니다. 가장 무서운 차별은 일상생활에 퍼져있는 차별입니다. 잡아내기 힘드니 까요.

I would like to pay attention to typical nature of discrimination. The most fearful cases would be discriminations spread throughout our daily lives; it is hard to detect them. 수년간 우리는 '살색' 크레파스가 어떤 사람을 정당한 '살 색'에서 배제한지도 모르는 체 특정 인종을 차별하게 되었습 니다. 이러한 일상생활의 문제를 찾아내고 고치는 것이야말 로 앞으로 다문화를 장려할 사회가 나아갈 방향이 아닌가 싶 습니다.

그렇지 않습니다. 세상엔 ‘살색’ 피부를 갖지 않은 많은 인 종들이 있습니다.

Not at all. There are many ethnic groups that do not have the color of skin-colored crayons.

For many years, we have discriminated some races with the skin-colored crayon, disregarding their skin color. Finding such discriminations in our daily lives is the direction toward which we should shift in order to foster multicultural society of Korea.

-강남역 셀리어학원 영어청취 전문강사 Michell이 전하는 영어 청취 노하우 말하기가 점점 중요해 지고 있습니다. 많은 영어 공인 시험들이 말하기 성적을 요구하고 있 영 어으니까요. 그래서 많은 학생들은 스피킹 점수를 높이기 위해 학원을 다니면서 혹은 혼자서 연습 하면서 준비를 합니다. 하지만 잠깐!!!!!!! 제대로 멋지게 말하기 위해선 먼저 해야 할 것이 있습니다. 정확한 청취 실력입니다. 상대방의 말을 이해 못한다면 내가 하는 말은 아무런 의미가 없어지게 됩니다. 그래서 정확한 리스닝이 중요한 것입니다. 잘 들어야 잘 말할 수 있으니까요. 하지만 학생들은 리스닝 과 스피킹을 별개로 생각하고 따로 공부하려는 경향이 있습니다. 충분한 input 즉 리스닝이 돼야 당연히 output 리스닝이 되는 건데 말이죠. 많이 들으면서 듣기 실력 을 쌓아야 말도 술술 된다는 겁니다. 아무런 투자 없이 좋은 결과를 바래서는 안 되겠죠? 지금도 영어가 중요하고 '생존의 도구'라고들 하지만 몇 년이 더 지나면 생존을 위한 기대효과나 레 벨은 훨씬 높아질 것입니다. 영어는 이제 국제어이지 어느 한 나라의 언어가 아닙니다. 시간이 지날 수록 지금처럼 인사말과 자기소개 몇 마디 하는 식으로 우리끼리 즐거워하고 만족해하는 수준을 넘 어, 정교하고 정확한 어휘선택과 문장구사를 요구하게 될 것입니다. 여태까지의 영어학습 목표수준이 ‘외국 여행'이라면 , 이제부터는 ‘외국에서 커리어 쌓기' 이르러야 한다는 뜻입니다. 외국에서 몇 년 살았다고 해서 영어실력이 뛰어난 것이 아닙니다. 주위에 1-2년 어학연수 갔다온 친구들을 보세요. 토익 점수 좀 높은 거 말고는 별로 대단한게 없어 보입니다. 한국인의 영혼, 국가관, 문화의식이 잘 조합된 바탕에서 영어를 얼마나 잘 구사하느냐가 주요 변수입니다. 한국에서도 얼마든 지 자신의 영어 실력을 향상시킬 수 있습니다. 인터넷을 통해 무한한 자료를 접하고 한국에 체류하는 많은 외국인들을 친구삼아 재미있게 영어 공부한다면 말이죠. 영어를 잘 하려면 노력해야 합니다. 일주일에 그저 두어 시간 영어책 좀 들여다보고 미국 드라마 한두 편 보면서 ‘노력'이라고 여기는 것은 영어를 너무 만만하게 보는 시각이 아닌가 합니다. 영어공부가 일상 생활의 의미 있는 일부분이 될 때까지, 습관화 되어 내게 익숙해 질 때까지 꾸준히 노력해야 합니다.

지 않아도 별로 문제 되지 않습니다. 일단 스터디그룹을 만들고 말하기에 필요한 주제를 정한 다음 서 로 준비한 내용을 말하고 그에 대한 보충 질문과 토론을 벌이는 시간을 가져 보세요. 준비해서 연습해 본 문장은 머릿속에 오래 남습니다. 이 과정에서 듣고 말하기 연습이 이루워 지는 거죠. 쉬운 토픽부 터 시작해서 서로 공통 관심사를 영어로 말해 보는 거에요. 만나기 힘들면 인터넷이나 스미트 폰을 통 해서 문자나 음성 채팅을 이용해도 좋구요. 우선 영어 공부를 꾸준히 함께할 친구나 동료를 찾아서 계 획을 짜 보세요.

셋째, 배경 지식을 쌓아라. 주제를 정하지 않고 즉석에서 말을 나누는 것도 영어 실력 향상을 위해 좋습니다 하지만 어느 정도 실력이 생기면 안부 묻기, 혹은 ‘주말에 뭐하고 지냈니' 같은 일상적 대화에서 벗어 나고 싶은 욕심이 생기게 됩니다. 미국인과 대화가 안 되는 주요한 이유는 물론 영어 실력도 실력이지만 말을 이어갈 수 있는 배경지 식이 부족하다는 것입니다. 즉 말할 거리가 별로 없다는 것입니다. 토픽의 부재입니다. 그래서 이 세 상의 핫이슈에 대해 관심을 가지고 정보 습득에 부지런 해야 합니다. 하지만 사실 뭐 거창한 토픽이 아니어도 됩니다. 자신이 좋아하는 분야면 뭐든 좋습니다. 팝송을 좋 아하면 빌보드 핫 100 최신 차트를 기억해서 미국인 친구와 음악에 대해 혹은 작곡가에 대해 즐겁게 이야기 할 수 있습니다. 스포츠나 요리에 대해 이야기를 나눌 수도 있구요. 자신만의 전문 분야 하나 쯤 영어로 유창하게 이야기 할 수 있다는 것 얼마나 멋진 일인가요?

넷째, 받아쓰기를 하라. 일단 많이 들어야 합니다. 들리지 않으면 말할 수 없습니다. 듣기는 잘하는데 말은 잘 못한다고요? 아닙니다. 정확히, 그리고 충분히 못 듣기 때문에 그런 말을 하는 것입니다. 가끔 영화나 드라마를 보면서 ‘대충 들린다'고 말하는 사람들도 나중에 스크립트를 구해 보면 깜짝 놀라는 경우가 많습니다. 몰라서 못 들은 단어는 차치하고, 알면서도 놓친 조동사, 고유명사, 관사가 생각보다 많기 때문입니다. 이런 점 때문에 초보자일수록 ‘들으면서 받아쓰라'를 해야 합니다. 처음에는 몇 개 단어, 익숙해지 면 한 문장이 끝날 때마다 음을 기억해 종이에 써내려가는 방식입니다. 처음에는 5분짜리 뉴스 하나 를 받아 적는 데 3시간도 넘게 걸리지만, 어느 정도 익숙해지면 10~20분이면 거의 완벽하게 소화해 낼 수 있습니다. 받아 적다보면 모르는 단어를 암기하는 데도 도움이 되고, 정확한 어법의 사용에 대 해 스스로 실감나게 체득할 수 있습니다. 받아쓰기를 한 후 반드시 꼼꼼한 첨삭 과정을 통해서 자신의 문제점을 분석해야 합니다. 뉴스부터 시작하세요. 흔히 뉴스가 어렵고 딱딱하다고 여기지만 실은 그렇지 않습니다. 기자들의 깨 끗한 음성은 물론이고, 속도감 있으면서 실전에 바로 응용할 수 있는 취재원들의 살아 있는 생활영어 도 접할 수 있습니다. 한국이나 미국이나 뉴스에선 대개 평범한 고교 재학생 수준이면 거의 다 이해할 수 있는 단어들을 사용합니다. 경제, 정치, 문화, 건강, 레저, 화제의 인물 등 다양한 토픽으로 공부하 다 보면 지루할 새가 없겠죠.

무작정 듣고 따라하면 되는게 아니에요!

아하! 영어를 듣는 것도 요령이 있었군요!

첫째, ‘섀도잉'의 효과를 경험하라. 말하기 연습에는 크게 두 가지가 있는데 하나는 ‘생각하고 말하기'이고, 다른 하나는 ‘그림자처럼 따 라 하기' 즉 '섀도잉'(shadowing)입니다. 뉴스나 드라마를 한 문장 단위로 끊어가면서 함께 읽어가는 방식입니다. 처음에는 원어민이 한 문장을 이야기하면 일단정지한 후 따라 한 다음 다시 재생해야 하 지만, 요령이 붙으면 그냥 틀어놓은 상태에서 보조를 맞출 수 있습니다. 듣고 따라하기 연습을 하면 리스닝 스피킹 연습이 동시에 이루어지고 이 과정을 통해 원어민의 호흡 과 어조 억양 발음 등을 흉내 내면서 익숙해집니다. 정확한 영어 문장을 많이 접해 보는 기회가 됩니 다. 이런 과정 없이 할 말을 오직 머릿속에서 한국어로 생각한 다음 영어로 변환하다보면 시간도 오래 걸리고 정확한 문장을 만들기도 쉽지 않을 겁니다. 많이 들으면서 머리 속을 영어 구조화 시켜야 합니 다. 한글뇌 영어뇌는 동시에 존재 가능하다고 봅니다. 중얼중얼 따라 읽으면서 반복하다보면 혀가 조금은 부드러워 지는 것을 느낄 수가 있습니다. 점점 나아지고 있다는 생각이 들면 기존의 콘텐츠를 외워서 말해보거나 새로운 내용을 만들어 이야기해보 거나 하는 더 다채로운 연습을 할 수 있습니다.

둘째, 뜻 맞는 친구들과 짝을 지어 연습하라. 듣고 말하기란 결국 ‘상대'와의 ‘상호작용'을 전제로 합니다. 외국인 친구가 있으면 참 좋겠지만 그렇

마지막으로 꾸준히 많이 하기. 공부를 시작할 때 우리는 ‘매일, 꾸준히, 조금씩'이란 말을 자주 합니다. 그런데 영어를 잘하는 사람 들의 이야기를 들어 보면 ‘매일, 꾸준히'까지는 같은데 ‘조금씩'이 아니라 ‘많이' 했다는 사실이 다르죠. 실력을 늘리고 싶다면 최우선적으로 영어에 시간을 투자해야 합니다. 만 시간의 법칙 다들 아시죠?? 뭔가를 잘하려면 촤소 만 시간은 투자해야 합니다. 영어 실력은 노력한 만큼 결과를 보여 줍니다. 정 직합니다. ‘매일, 꾸준히, 많이' 한다는 생각을 가지고 한번 도전해 보 세요. 영어는 다행이 머리가 좋지 않아도 누구나 꾸준히 열심히만 하면 잘 할 수 있습니다. 자신을 돌아 보세요. 영어책은 수두 룩한데 다 끝낸 책이 몇권이나 있는지 그리고 얼마나 열정적 으로 공부했는지. 끊임없이 노력하면서 자신의 영어를 다듬다 보면 조금씩조금씩 향상되는 것을 느끼게 될 것입니다. 어느 순간 아 영어가 되네, 잘 들리네, 말이 술술 나오네. 이렇게 느 끼는 순간이 올 것입니다. 매일매일 꾸준히 한다면요. 오늘부터 한번 시작해 보는 건 어떨까요?
