The demand for overseas trips is on the rise.

According to the Korea Consumer Agency* on July 25, the number of Koreans going on overseas trips* this year will amount to 15 million, an approximate 21 percent increase compared to that of last year’s.

The domestic market for overseas trips has grown rapidly during recent years, a trend which has continued despite unfavorable economic conditions.

Meanwhile, numerous complaints on online overseas trip packages have been filed. Measures

to address these issues are crucial* to the growth of the market.

This week, The Corea Courier’s travel reporter Isabelle Kim invites you on her journey to Vietnam. More on page 11.

O n J u l y 2 5 , C h i n e s e Vi c e President Li Yuanchao visited North Korea to have talks with the North’s leader Kim Jong-un, attending commemorations* of the 60th anniversary of the end of the Korean War. Li made it clear that China would persist in denuclearization* of the peninsula as its neighbor and continue dialogue and consultation for maintaining peace and stability in the region.

Kim told Li that he would also support China’s effort to resume the six-party talks. According to the statement issued by China’s foreign ministry, Li was told to convey Chinese President Xi Jinping’s message to North Korea.

This meeting between Li and Kim showed China’s clear stance on denuclearization after North Korea’s third nuclear test was conducted in February. The conference also implies its significance in that Li would be the highest-ranked official sent from China since Kim became leader.

There have been many speculations* over Li’s visit to North Korea. Some said it showed China’s changed attitude towards North Korea’s denuclearization.

However, others argued that it was one of the prior actions of China to take the advantageous position in the six-party talks.

The government plans to abolish* the document screening process focusing on examining “spec” (short for specifications in Korean slang) to hire new employees will come into effect as early as next year.

According to the announcement published in July 25, Ministry of Strategy and Finance is currently in discussion to replace application review process that evaluates applicants’ background such as standardized language tests and GPA as an employee performance test.

There have been so many critics who point out the same old, meaningless preparation for making excessive “specifications.” As an alternative, a storytelling or audition process will be carried out as a new

hiring process in public institutions.

The storytelling method, also known as “social recruiting,” is entirely online process using Social networking services. Applicants inform the employer of their basic personal information such as name and age completely ruling out their specifications. The employer also assigns* different kinds of tasks like presentation assignments to rate their ability, exchanging feedbacks.

However, some are worrying about these yet unsystematic recruiting measures.

The government is to establish the new hiring process by the end of this year and start out from the first half of next year.

Experts warned that children who are learning through tablets, smartphones and computers will have a narrower range of word usage.

According to the study, the reason lies in the fact that our brains are hardwired* to learn new vocabulary through hearing and verbal repetitions*.

Dr. Marco Catani, of the Institute of Psychiatry, King’s College London, found out from the study scanning 27 research participants that the key factor to learning new words is to hear others say them and imitate them verbally until getting them correct.

This study result reported in the journal Proceedings of the National

Academy of Sciences also showed that a certain brain area links two brain regions, one undertaking hearing sounds and the other forming speech, which plays a critical role in learning.

H o w e v e r, l e a r n i n g w i t h smartphones and computers focus on visual senses rather than auditory*.

This is why experts predict children with digital devices will fall behind previous generations in using a wide range of vocabulary.

Dr. Catani suggested that people need to recognize the importance of hearing and speaking words, and continue passing oral traditions to children.

A study found that age 23 and 69 are the happiest moments in our lives.

Dr. Schwandt, of the Center for Economic Performance at the London School of Economics and Political Science, analyzed the happiness level of 23,161 people aged between 17 and 85. The research result also proved life contentment* follows a U-shaped pattern in line with previous studies that have been done across 50 nations with varying class and financial statuses.

One of the theories that Dr. Schwandt suggested as a reason was about to what extent future life expectations and the reality match

each other.

In early 20s people overestimate* their future, which makes them start to feel disappointment.

After their frustration over the failure to accomplish their goals peaks at mid-50, they no longer face disappointment and start to underestimate* their future in age 68.

So the happiness level peaks again at age 69.

Dr. Schwandt pointed out mid50s is the worst time for regrets and suggested that people may learn from the elderly. He also added that they should not be so frustrated in their unmet expectations.

A massive* water fight involving mostly college students occurred in the middle of one of Sinchon’s bustling street on Saturday.

Weapons used were mostly water guns ranging in size and shape.

Known as the “1st Sinchon Water Gun Festival,” the event was held for the sole purpose of fighting the heat and relieving stress, its Facebook page wrote.

토요일, 북적거리는 신촌의 거리 한복판에서 대다수의 대학생들이 참여한 물총 놀이가 한창이었다. 물 싸움의 주 무기는 다양한 크기와 모양의 물총들이었다.

페이스북 페이지에 따르면 “제 1회 신촌 물총축제”로 불 리는 이번 행사는 더위와 맞서고 스트레스를 해소하자는 취지로 열렸다고 한다.

Korean drug development plan to spend 10 trillion won by 2017

국내 신의약품 개발 계획, 총 10억 원 투입된다

A total of 10 trillion won (US$8.9 billion) will be spent on the development of 20 new drugs over the next five years collaborating* with private pharmaceutical* companies, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety said on July 21.

The health ministry added the government will also raise a 500 billion won (over US$447 million) fund to help the companies expand their

global presence in the drug industry by acquiring potential overseas drug makers during the period.

The project aims to place Korea within the global top 10 drug exporters numbering up to 11 trillion won (over US$9.8 billion) by 2017.

The five-year project is the first stage of the government-planned “Pharma 2020 Vision” released last year. The plan aims to grow the

Korean drug industry into one of the global top seven by 2020.

Because of the plans, the central government intends to provide tax cuts to the drug companies investing in research and development* for new drugs.

5년에 걸쳐 진행될 의약품 개발 계획은 정부가 지난 해 발 표한 “2020년 제약산업 전망”의 발판으로 작용할 것이다. 이

는 2020년까지 한국 제약산업을 세계 7대 수준으로 끌어올 리기 위해 진행된다. 중앙 정부는 이러한 계획을 고려하여 신의약품의 연구 개 발에 투자하는 제약 회사에는 감세를 할 예정이다.

Paul Krugman “China is about to hit its Great Wall” 폴 크루그먼 “중국 경제성장 한계에 달했다”

Princeton University professor and economist Paul Krugman spoke out on China’s rapid economic growth, confronting with a major crisis drawn from lopsided* balance between consumption and investment.

He argued in his article published in NYT on July 18 that time has come to China to pay for its excessive concentration on investment rather than consumption.

He explained that thanks to ‘surplus labor’ China has been able to invest on its industry without diminishing returns* and maintain low wages but it reached and a ”Lewis turning point” where it is running out of surplus

peasants.

According to his article, wages will increase and investment will accompany diminishing returns without enough buffer of consumption to counterbalance* their effects.

On July 21, Krugman made clear of his view towards China’s economy at the Doosan Global Business Forum held in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Tyler Cowen, an economist and professor at George Mason University, also agreed with him on the difficulty to predict potential risk factors of the Chinese economy.

Film Review: Hugh Jackman saves the Wolverine from its real-life destruction 영화 리뷰 : 더 울버린 (2013) Article by Hwang Yoon Translation by Lee Seung-kon

Of all the X-Men mutants, I have to say Wolverine is my favorite. Only Hugh Jackman can portray the aggressive and tragic character, like Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man. Directed by James Mangold (who is also known for “Walk the Line”) and written by Mark Bomback and Scott Frank, the film distinctly stands out from other traditional superhero films like “Man of Steel” or “The Dark Knight Rises,” lacking a large-scale destruction of a city or even the world.

Instead, “The Wolverine” is action-packed with confrontation* with one’s past—this time, showing the “adamantiumized” hero witnessing the atomic bombing of Nagasaki—and enriching Logan’s (as the Wolverine is also personally known) background.

The film maintains its superhero persona intact, while connecting the dots of the X-Men world

with real-life events, which I have to say, makes it unusually convincing for the X-Men franchise.

Despite the close-quarter hand-to-hand combat scenes at a traditional Japanese funeral, the tension at a bar in the Great White North or the seemingly impossible fight on top of a bullet train, the story itself does not exactly meet awesomeness* a superhero film fan (myself for one) would expect.

The plot is not all that exciting, as any decent superhero film should be, and I started to watch for the sake of watching, any input of enthusiasm or fascination slowly degenerating as did Wolverine’s powers in the film.

Still, Jackman is, and can only be the Wolverine…no one else.

As for the Silver Samurai incarnated as a giant metallic cyborg of Ichiro Yashida? It’s big pile of shiny metal garbage I barely tolerated. I’d rather it

was a human-sized cyborg, enhancing Yashida’s old age, kind of like “The Teen Titans’” Cyborg, armed with the powerfully charged katana. Its size shrank its main enmity.

Spoiler Alert: For the sake of those who haven’t seen it yet, I must warn that this next bit may be a spoiler.

Logan’s healing factor is well-known fact and one of his trademarks, but there is one teeny bit of flaw I find quite bothersome. When his healing is deteriorated* by Viper (an antagonist* mutant), his usage of his adamantium claws should also scar his tissue between his knuckles—which they don’t. They’re the only parts of his physiology absent from any scarring.

Yes, it bothered me as I was watching the film resting my jaw on top of my own knuckles.

Choo, “Ryu got me” 추신수 선수, “현진이한테 당했어요”

Shin-Soo Choo, 31, of the Cincinnati Reds, went up against fellow Hyun-Jin Ryu, 26, of the LA Dodgers, on July 28. The Dodgers took the victory 4–1.

After the match, Choo expressed his surprise at Ryu for pitching a changeup in the third inning against him. As a result, he was grounded out*.

Choo explained that it was rare for left-handed

pitchers to throw changeups against left-handed batters, especially in that particular situation. He added that he was intending to pull a full swing against what he expected would have been a fast ball* instead.

“I’m not in my best condition,” said Choo, adding, “Still, I do not want to make any excuses because of my physical condition.”

“The Dodgers are a strong opponent. I hope our team doesn’t have to meet them in the playoffs.”

It was the first Korean pitcher-batter duel since July 2010 between Chan Ho Park and Choo, and the 15th duel in MLB history. Choo was playing for the Cleveland Indians and Park for the New York Yankees.

The Trayvon Martin Case 트레이본 마틴 살인사건

rayvon Martin, a 17-year-old African American high school student, was shot dead in Florida in February last year

by George Zimmerman, a mixed-race Hispanic neighborhood watch coordinator. Zimmerman, who claimed to have shot Martin in self-defense, was tried and acquitted by a jury of seconddegree murder and manslaughter charges on July 13 this year. Visiting his father’s fiancée at her townhome in a multiethnic gated community, Martin was spotted by Zimmerman one evening wearing a dark hoodie and apparently walking around the neighborhood aimlessly. Zimmerman immediately suspected the black youth to be a troublemaker and called the police, and while on the phone decided to follow Martin in his truck.

After the call ended, a violent scuffle between Martin—who was unarmed—and Zimmerman ensued outside his parked truck mid-pursuit, which culminated in the fatal shooting. Shortly after, the police apprehended Zimmerman, who was apparently coming out second best in the altercation before he resorted to his firearm.

self-defense law that allows individuals the right to use deadly force in self-defense without any requirement to evade or retreat from a potentially dangerous situation. Zimmerman’s actions were reasonable in light of this law, provided he did not provoke an assault. While the law itself was not used as a defense in Zimmerman’s trial, his eventual acquittal probably does little to dispel the principle that any armed individual has the right to use firearms even when they have the option of escaping a confrontational situation. On the flip side, had Trayvon Martin been an adult and armed himself, the law would have afforded him little protection, let alone justification—as President Obama put it rhetorically, “Could he (Martin) have stood his ground on that sidewalk?”

Had Martin shot Zimmerman, claiming he felt threatened because the latter was shadowing him in his truck, the law’s ambiguities would have stood out all the more. The legal issues surrounding the controversy merit their own rigorous debate.

The main issue, however, is the question of racial profiling and the persistent vicious cycle that links racial minorities with socioeconomic

underachievement and disproportionately high crime participation as well as susceptibility to violence generally. The historical context that contributes to such institutionalized disparities and underscores the sense of discrimination and injustice faced by minority communities in the U.S. continues to stay relevant despite successive and generational progress in race relations.

Ideally, mainstream awareness of such context should be at the root of national conversations about race, but appeals to history are all too often framed as inconsequentialities, “passing the buck,” or race-baiting. While violence within such minority communities, rather than without is statistically graver, that does not excuse or explain the plight of a lone teenager of color taking a walk at night, trailed by a (justifiably or not) prejudiced older man in his vehicle—instead it highlights a broader need to examine and recognize diverse perspectives and shun careless ascriptions of inherent delinquency and criminality. As for the aftermath, the restraint and dignity shown by peaceful demonstrations and vigils undertaken in the memory of the victim are to be commended.

흑인이든 백인이든 인종을 막론해서 다양한 관점을 인식할 필요가 있다고 생각한다. 통계수치를 이용해서 ‘태생적으로 범죄를 저지르는 인종이 존재한다’와 같은 편견이 자리잡을 소지를 제거하려면 기본적으로 역사와 다수의 책임을 바탕 으로 한 국가적 대화가 진행되어야 한다고 본다. 미국을 포 함한 대표적인 다문화 국가들이 많이 발전해온 것은 사실이 지만, 아직도 진정한 다원주의 사회를 확보하기에는 갈 길이 남은 듯하다.

Korea with the insensibility of safety 안전불감증에 노출된 대한민국

rom old times, there were always implications before nasty accidents.

Even though people acknowledge them, most of look the other way or ignore hints. This triggers the insensibility of safety, which is a combination of doubt that says ”no way” and a complacency that says “it will be okay.” Recent major accidents that happened within a month such as the Noryangjin reservoir accident, Marine Corps Tae-an Camp accident have triggered so many injuries and fatalities. These accidents have a common feature related with the insensibility of safety, which was mentioned above. I will look back to the incidents that have recently occurred and will also try to find the solution. 큰 사고가 나기 전엔 항상 그에 상응하는 복 예로부터 선들이 깔리기 마련이었다. 하지만, 이를 알면서도

사람들은 실상 그 복선 앞에서는 그것을 못 본 척 하거나 무 시해버리는 경우가 많다. 이는 ‘설마’하는 의문과 ‘괜찮겠지’ 라는 안일함이 뒤섞인 안전불감증을 야기한다. 노량진 수몰 사고, 태안캠프사고 등 최근 1달 동안 일어난 큰 사고들은 여 러 사람들의 목숨을 앗아갔고 수많은 부상자들을 발생시켰 다. 이 사고들의 공통점은 바로 위에서 언급한 안전불감증에 의거한다는 것이다. 필자는 이번 주 최근 일어난 대한민국의 사건사고들을 돌아보고 이에 대한 해결책을 찾아보려 한다.

On July 15 when heavyrain was pouring, a water pipe installation was taking place at the Noryangjin Reservoir. The Seoul government has enforced construction despite water levels of the Han River becoming higher than usual. Of course, there were seven workers who were working in the place carrying out their duties. But the lackadaisical attitude of the Seoul government has triggered an accident that is irreversible. Sudden influx of water has swallowed the workers, which has precluded them to come back to their family members. As I mentioned above, this submerging accident could have been prevented without the enforcement of an impractical construction. In this backdrop, I came up with the question of how

these people understood the meaning of the word. ”safety.” 비가 퍼붓던 7월 15일, 노량진 배수지에서는 상수도관 설 치공사가 이뤄지고 있었다. 계속 해서 내리는 폭우로 인해 한강 수위가 평소보다 많이 상승해있는 상황이었지만 서울 시는 공사를 강행했다. 당연히 그 곳에서 작업을 하던 7명의 인부들은 계속해서 자신들의 책임을 다하고 있었다. 하지만, 서울시의 안일한 행동은 되돌릴 수 없는 사고를 야기하고 말 았다. 급작스레 유입된 강물은 일하던 인부들을 삼켜버렸고 그들은 다시 가족의 품으로 돌아갈 수 없게 되었다. 앞서 언 급했듯이, 이 수몰 사고는 충분히 사전에 예방할 수 있었지 만 무리한 공사감행은 이를 불가능하게 했다. 이런 어처구니 없는 상황을 돌이켜보면 도대체 사람들이 ‘안전’이란 단어의 뜻을 어떻게 받아들이고 있는지에 대한 의문점이 드는 게 사 실이다.

On July 18 when Korea was having several accidents, one more sad news was told. The news was about five high school students, whom went to the Sae-an Marine Corps Camp, have been missing after being swept by waves. The next day, they came back as cold bodies. This accident possesses several problems, one of which is that the Marine Corps camp was an organization that is unauthorized by the government. In other words, the camp never went through a safety test. Also, it is scrutinized that the most teaching assistants within the organization were parttimers and some among them even did not have qualifications. It is not only very heartbreaking to know that there are so many money-blinded people in society but also there are too many whys in the fact that the school did not check the information in the first place. In addition, it is hard to believe that all teachers were drinking while the students were in training and no one was there as a guardian. Above all, these people need safety education. 여러 사고들로 몸살을 앓고 있던 대한민국은 7월 18일, 또 하나의 비보를 전해 듣게 된다. 해병대캠프를 갔던 공주사대 부고 학생 5명이 파도에 휩쓸려 실종되었다는 것이었다. 그

리고 다음날, 이들은 모두 싸늘한 주검이 되어 돌아왔다. 이 사고는 여러 문제점을 지니고 있는데 우선 이 해병대 캠프 자체가 정부 미인증 단체라는 것이다. 이는 안전검사를 제대 로 받지 않은 단체를 의미한다. 또한 이 해병대 캠프에서 일 하고 있던 조교들은 대부분 아르바이트생이며 몇 명은 자격 요건도 충족 못하는 것으로 밝혀졌다. 돈에 눈먼 사람들이 팽배한 현실도 안타깝지만 학교 자체가 이들을 애초에 확인 조차 하지 않은 것도 이해되지 않는다. 또한 문제가 된 훈련 을 받을 때 교사들은 모두 술을 마시고 있었고 단 한 명도 그 자리에 있지 않았다는 얘기는 정말 믿기 힘들다. ‘안전’에 대 한 교육은 이런 사람들에게 우선적으로 필요한 게 아닐까 싶 다

People’s lives are invaluable. No one can deny this absolute fact. So, people have to prioritize safety when doing something. Sometimes, people lose their lives due to natural disasters or an unexpected accident. But when you have felt it, and you are still ignoring implications, something is surely going wrong. There is a reason for the existence of the phrase, “insensibility of safety.”

It means that one is not acknowledging safety. I hope for you to not become a dull person, who reacts when the situation happens. Therefore, a solution is not that difficult to find. Double-check it, give it more attention and think about it before you act. I pray that no more accidents happen again and pray for the repose of the deceased victims. 사람들의 목숨은 소중하다. 이는 누구도 부인할 수 없는 절대적인 사실이다. 그렇기에 사람들은 어떤 일들을 할 때 ‘안전’을 최우선적으로 생각해야 하는 것이다. 가끔은 예상 치 못한 천재지변이나 사고들이 사람들의 목숨을 앗아갈 때 도 있다. 하지만, 예상이 되는 순간, 만약 복선들을 눈치챘음 에도 이를 무시한다면 뭔가 크게 잘못하고 있는 것이다. 안 전불감증이란 말이 괜히 있는 것이 아니다. 말 그대로 ‘안전’ 에 대한 뜻을 체감하지 못한다는 것인데, 상황이 일어나고 나서야 이를 몸으로 익히는 우둔한 사람이 되지 않았으면 한 다. 그렇기에 해결책이라 함은 그리 어렵지 않다. 애초에 한 번 더 보고, 한번 더 주의하고, 한번 더 생각하며 행동하면 되는 것이다. 더 이상 대한민국에 큰 사고가 없기를 기도하 며 희생자들의 명복을 빈다. yh961407@hotmail.com

4.) Gina Liscano Genre: Pop What sets this artist apart: voice/attitude Gina undoubtedly has one of the most powerful voices in the expat scene. She specializes in doing 70s music covers (I haven’t heard her do any original tracks yet, but I’m sure she’s able).

She isn't afraid of the stage, has a very confident demeanor* and has attitude. She is definitely one of the most powerful and talented divas on the scene.

5.) Chris Cho Genre: R&B/soul What sets this artist apart: voice/song content Chris Cho started performing in the Seoul underground expat scene just two months ago, but he performs at every major show and he seems to have finally found his niche. Prior to this, he was involved in the Korean scene and has a mixed tape to his name. His soulful voice and song content are what sets him apart. His sound leans a bit more toward neo-soul and retro-soul but he also has the ability to sing mainstream and ballads.

eet Eunpah Kim. This 27-year-old from Busan travelled to Luxor, Egypt for two years as a KOICA volunteer teaching Korean in a tourism institute. While in Luxor, she enjoyed practicing Arabic as well as relaxing in her favorite local coffee shop. Though, as a woman in a Muslim country, she was not able to experience much of the nightlife, according to Eunpah, some of the best parties in town were wedding parties that were carried out in the street.

김은파씨를 소개한다. 부산 출신의 27살의 은파씨는 2년 전 여행사에서 한국어를 가르치는 KOICA 자원봉사자로 이 집트 룩소르에 왔다. 룩소르에 있는 동안 그녀는 아랍어 연 습과 그녀가 가장 좋아하는 지역 커피숍에서 쉬는 것을 즐겼 다. 이슬람 국가에서 여성이라는 이유 때문에 밤 문화는 많이 즐기지 못했지만, 도시에서 가장 좋았던 파티 중의 하나는 길 가에서 열린 결혼 파티였다고 그녀는 전한다.

hat was your first impression of the people?

이곳 사람들의 첫 인상은 어땠나요?

When I first met Egyptian people, I thought they were very active and sociable. With time and as I got to know the culture better, I discovered that my first impression was accurate. 이집트 사람들을 처음 만났을 때 저는 그 사람들이 굉장히 활동적이고 사교적이라고 생각했습니다. 시간이 지나고 문 화를 더 많이 알았을 때 저는 제 첫 인상이 정확했다는 것을 깨달았습니다.

s a teacher, what did you think of the education system?

선생님으로서, 이곳의 교육 제도를 어떻게 생각하십니까?

In general, it was not very good. Many parents don't trust the quality of public education so they want to send their children to private schools in spite of expensive school fees. Even in an institute with a good reputation, many teachers are not very interested in teaching their students and students are not so serious about their studies. 전체적으로 봤을 때 별로 좋지 않습니다. 많은 부모들이 공 교육을 신뢰하지 않기 때문에 아이들을 비싼 학비에도 불구 하고 사립 학교에 보내고 싶어합니다. 좋은 평판을 받고 있는 기관이라도 선생님이 자신의 학생을 가르치는 데 관심이 없 고, 학생도 배우는데 많은 열정을 가지고 있지 않습니다.

ow is the work environment? 작업 환경은 어떻습니까?

It was very different. In terms of efficiency, everything is done at a slow pace and I had to check many times to make sure tasks were really done. Also, the relationship is considered very important in Egyptian culture so I could not jump

into work directly. After two years of trial and error, I figured it out.

굉장히 다릅니다. 효율성 면에서는 모든 것이 굉장히 느리 게 처리되고, 정말 일이 처리되었는지 몇 번이고 확인해야 합 니다. 그리고 이집트에서는 대인관계를 굉장히 중요시하기 때문에 저는 일에 곧바로 참여할 수 없었습니다. 2년 동안 시 행착오를 겪은 후에야 이집트에 대해 알게 된 것 같습니다.

ny big political or economic situations while you were living there?

As you might know, there was a revolution in early 2011 in Egypt. Since then, Egypt has been pretty chaotic and I was affected in many ways.

Luxor, the city where I lived, was far from Cairo so there were only a few demonstrations. Once, workers at my school went on strike so I had to do my Korean class outside the school. Also, I was reminded of the importance of education. I think Egypt needs to educate its people well to achieve real democracy. For me, it was somewhat like going back to Korea's past (1970-80) and being part of a historic moment in Egypt. 이미 알고 계시겠지만 2011년도 초기에 이집트에서 많은 혁명이 일어났습니다. 그때 이후로 이집트는 굉장히 혼란스 러웠고, 저도 그 영향을 여러 면에서 많이 받았습니다. 제가 살고 있던 룩소르는 카이로와 멀리 떨어져 있었기 때문에 시 위가 많이 일어나진 않았습니다. 한번은 학교 노동자가 파업 해서 제 한국어 수업을 학교 밖에서 진행해야 했던 적이 있습 니다. 그리고 이런 일들을 통해 교육의 중요성을 다시 한 번 깨닫게 됐습니다. 제 생각에 이집트가 진정한 민주주의를 확 립하기 위해서는 시민들을 교육해야 할 것 같습니다. 이 이집 트의 역사적인 순간은 저에게 있어서 한국의 과거(1970-80) 로 돌아가는 것과 비슷했습니다.

Well, when I was adjusting, I was very weary of being deceived. One day, I went to a restaurant to buy some salad and asked for the ”Arabic menu” (sometimes prices are different on the English and Arabic versions). I read carefully and prepared the exact amount of money for the salad I ordered.

My attitude was, “If he asks for more money, I’ll fight and win!” But the owner of the restaurant was very kind and asked about my life in Luxor and, as a welcoming gift, he gave me the salad for free. The salad was not even very expensive (600 won). I felt quite ashamed because, in an attempt to not lose my pocket change, I was losing more important things. After that, I tried to give people the benefit of the doubt. 글쎄요. 이집트에 적응하고 있을 무렵 저는 제가 잘 속는 것에 굉장히 지쳐있었습니다. 하루는 샐러드를 사러 식당에 가서 아랍어 메뉴판(가끔 영어 버전과 아랍어 버전 메뉴들의 음식 가격이 다르거든요)을 달라고 했습니다. 저는 메뉴판을 신중하게 봤고, 샐러드를 주문할 때 필요한 돈을 정확히 준비 했습니다. 만약 종업원이 돈을 더 요구한다면 싸워서 이기리 라 라는 태도를 가지고 있었습니다. 하지만 식당의 주인은 굉 장히 친절했고, 제게 룩소르에서의 삶은 어떤지 물었습니다. 그리고 환영하는 의미로 샐러드를 공짜로 선물해줬습니다. 샐러드가 비싼 것도 아니었습니다. 600원 정도 했거든요. 저 는 부끄러웠습니다. 왜냐하면, 주머니의 푼돈을 잃지 않으려 고 지나치게 집착해서 더 중요한 걸 잃고 있었기 때문이었습 니다. 그 후로부터 저는 다른 사람들에게 의심의 혜택을 주기 위해 노력하고 있습니다.

How are my readers doing? This is your weekly Bonafide. The rainy days are making people gloomier when they should all be out having fun. Well, Korean people know how to entertain themselves without going out; watching TV, browsing the Internet or playing online or offline games. The sole purpose of all entertainment is to have fun, which is why comical sources are always in great need. In Korea, shows like Gag Concert and Infinite Challenges have been recognized for it’s longevity and its consistent output of humor.

Nowadays, due to the vast amount of information that the Internet can process, humor and jokes are pouring out, always being available to us. Same as artists, they also like to laugh and sometimes make songs inspired by jokes or personal experiences.

So this week I would like to introduce some of the funny songs that I enjoy. 안녕하십니까? 보나파이드입니다. 요즘 장마철이라 밖에 나 가지도 못하고 울적해도 밖에 나가지 않고 즐거울 수 있어서 다행입니다. TV, 영화, 게임 인터넷 등을 보면서 즐기는데, 모 든 엔터테인먼트의 목적은 즐거움이라는 생각이 듭니다, 언제 나 끊임없는 필요로 하고 있고요. 그래서 한국에선 무한도전이 나 개그콘서트 같은 프로그램들이 끊임없는 사랑을 받고 있습 니다. 인터넷과 매체의 발달로 인해 사람들이 접하기도 쉬워졌 습니다. 모든 사람과 같이 모든 아티스트들은 자신의 경험이나 유머에 감명받고 노래를 만들기도 한답니다. 그래서 이번 주는 재미있는 노래들을 소개하려 합니다.

“Colt 45” (original name “Crazy Rap”) by Afroman was released on August 2001. Afroman is an American rapper from California who has been nominated for a Grammy for the song, “Because I Got High” this song is also highly comical talking about how every failure or mistake he made he uses his drug abuse as an excuse. However, I personally think “Colt 45” was more creative in the sense how it’s less repetitive and has funny jokes about his experiences with females. Quite sexual or inappropriate, but still is one of my most enjoyed comical songs. 아프로맨의 “Colt 45”는 2001년도에 처음 소개되었는데, 그 는 같은 해에 “Because I Got High” 라는 노래로 그래미 노미 네이션을 받은 적도 있습니다. 이 노래는 자기가 인생 모든 잘 못이나 실수를 자신이 마약을 사용해서 못했다고 핑계를 대는 풍자적이며 재미난 노래입니다. 하지만 개인적으로는 “Colt

45”가 더 창의적이고 덜 반복적이어서 좋고, 자신이 만난 여자 들에 대한 이야기를 과장과 묘사로 유머러스하게 표현했습니 다. 어떤 내용은 성적이기도 하지만 그럼에도 제가 가장 좋아하 는 코믹힙합노래 중 하나입니다.

“My Name Is” by Eminem is probably the more known and famous of the three songs on this list due to the fact that Eminem is a holder of multiplatinum records. He says some of the most bizarre and ferocious things in this song, but yet, makes it jolly and funny. I thought it was very creative for him to start his song by giving advice to children with the most wrong information a parent would give. 에미넴의 이노래는 이다른 두곡보다는 제일 유명하고 잘 알 려져있다고 할 수 있습니다. 물론 에미넴이 그만큼 유명한 거장 이기도 하기때문이죠. 이런 해괴하고 익살스러운 노래를 너무 나 재밌게 표현하고, 반어법으로 아이들에게 터무니없는 조언 을 해주는것이 창의성이 돋보인다 생각하여 이 리스트에 포함 시켰습니다.

“One More Drink” by Ludacris talks about his drinking experience and mostly about his “beer goggles.” “Beer goggles” are when a woman looks more attractive to the guy intoxicated. And the song itself is funny but the music video is just hilarious.

There is a scene where he wakes up thinking he got lucky last night, but actually end up waking up with a very unattractive woman, and cutting his arm off because she was sleeping on it. Ludacris lives up to his name. 이 노래는 루다크리스가 술을 마시며 놀다가 생긴 일을 재미 있게 표현한 노래입니다. “비어고글”이라 하여 술을 마시면 여 자가 더 이뻐지는 현상을 묘사한 노래입니다. 노래도 흥미롭지 만 뮤직비디오와 함께 보면 더욱 큰 웃음을 줄 수 있습니다. 이 뮤직비디오의 한 장면은, 자고 일어나보니 어떤 여자가 자신의 팔을 베고있어 흡족해 했는데, 너무나 괴상하게 생긴 여자라 그 여자를 깨우기 전에 자신의 팔을 자르고 나오는 모습을 우스꽝 스럽게 그려내었습니다. 루다크리스의 이름답게 유머감각을 뽐내는 노래였습니다.

A

uthor Graham Greene writes in The Quiet American, Vietnam can hold you like a smell does. He goes on to list images like the vibrant greens, reds and browns that make up a steaming bowl of “pho bo” (beef noodle soup), the setting sun over the rice paddy fields, and the buzzing of the locals as they gossip through the morning while peddling their daily wares.

His character finishes his passage by saying that he doesn’t give a damn about his old home, because home has shifted 8,000 miles. This is how I felt almost immediately coming to Vietnam as I instantaneously fell into infatuation with the country, its people, their food and everything in between.

If there’s anything I’ve learned during my weeklong stay, it’s that Vietnam is a nation going places.

Fast.

Home to an energetic and direct people, sharp in commerce and resilient by nature, this astonishingly exciting country, where the locals love a laugh (and a drink) leaves much room for the eye to wander and the taste buds to tingle.

Rich in both a history of cataclysmic conflict and a swirling yet distinct culture, Vietnam is Asia’s comeback kid—a wonderfully rewarding and incredibly varied land for the traveler bit by the wanderlust bug.

SAIGON Ho Chi Minh City, or Saigon as the locals still call it, can be described as a living organism that breathes life and vitality into all who settle there, and visitors cannot help but be hauled along for the ride. Wander through timeless alleys to ancient pagodas before fast-forwarding into the future within designer malls situated beneath the city’s skyscrapers. 그레이엄 그린은 ‘조용한 미국인(The Quiet 작가American)’에서 베트남이 마치 냄새가 그러듯이 당

신을 잡아둘 수 있다고 서술했다. 그는 이어 베트남 쌀국수 (포보 Pho bo 소고기 국수), 석양이 지는 쌀 밭, 그리고 사람 들이 하루 입을 옷을 준비하면서 떠는 수다를 이루고 있는 선 명한 초록색, 빨간색 그리고 갈색의 이미지들을 나열했다. 소설 속 주인공은 그의 옛 집이 8,000마일이나 떨어진 곳에 있기 때문에 상관도 하지 않는다면서 그의 문단을 마친다. 이것은 내가 베트남에 막 도착했을 때 느낀 것과 같았다. 당 장 나는 이 나라와 이곳 사람과, 그들의 음식 그리고 그 사이 의 모든 것들에 열중하게 되었다. 내가 일주일 동안 생활하면서 배운 게 있다면 베트남은 이 곳저곳을 돌아다니는 나라라는 것이다. 그것도 빠르게. 활력 있고 직설적인 사람들의 집인 이곳. 현지인들은 상업에 뛰어 나고 천부적으로 원기가 있는 사람들이다. 몹시나 흥미진진 한 이 나라에서는 사람들이 웃는 (그리고 술 마시는)것을 즐 기고 흥미로운 무언가를 받아들일 자세와 혀를 얼얼하게 만 들 음식들로 마음을 사로잡는다. 격변하는 갈등의 역사와 소 용돌이 속 뚜렷한 문화, 이 두 가지 모두로 가득한 베트남은 아시아의 ‘컴백 키드(돌아온 친구 comeback kid)’이다. 방 랑하는 벌레에 물린 여행객에게 굉장히 보람 있고 놀랄 만큼 다양한 땅이다.

같이 왔으면 좋았을 텐데: 베트남 (사이공) The ghosts of the past live on in buildings, that only one generation ago, witnessed a city in turmoil. However, the real beauty of Saigon’s urban collage is the seamless blend between the old and the new to become one thrilling and seething mass.

Put simply, there’s nowhere else quite like it.

When getting to know the city, there’s no time for “flirtationship.” Better take it head on, hop on the back of a xe om, a motorcycle taxi, and let your driver take you to all of the best spots. It was then when started to see the appeal of riding a scooter everywhere, as they do in Vietnam. The wind on

your face and the thrill of not knowing when the next accident would happen (I think I saw about four scooter accidents in one day). That is, until the monsoon rain decided to pour down.

The hectic morning I had from visiting city’s many Buddhist temples, the Chinese-influenced Bin Tay Market, the eye-opening War Remnants Museum, and feasting on the famous banh xeo (crispy crepe filled with pork, shrimp, and bean sprouts) from 46A was not about to be dampened by some tropical showers. Just stop for some 주자들에게 삶과 생명력을 불어넣는 살아있는 유기체라고 묘사될 수 있고, 여행객들에게는 간신히 얻어 탈 수밖에 없 는 곳이다. 도시의 고층 건물들 아래 위치해 있는 미래 지향 적인 디자이너 가게들로 가는 길에, 세월이 흘러도 변하지 않는 골목길들에서 고대의 광장을 거닐 수 있다. 이전 세대 부터 도시의 혼란을 지켜보아 왔던 과거의 유령들이 빌딩에 살고 있다. 하지만 사이공 도시 콜라주의 진정한 아름다움은 옛것과 새것의 매끄러운 혼합이 만드는 황홀하고 들끓는 무 리이다. 간단히 말하자면 그 어디에도 여기 같은 곳이 없다. 우리가 도시를 알아갈 무렵에는 재미삼아 이것저것 건드 려 볼 시간이 없었다. 완전히 푹 빠지는 게 더 좋았기 때문이 다. 오토바이 택시인 Xe Om 뒤에 타서 운전자가 모든 명소 에 데려다 주도록 하는 것이었다. 그러고 나서야 베트남 사 람들이 그러듯 스쿠터를 타고 모든 곳을 돌아다니는 것의 매 력을 느낄 수 있었다. 얼굴을 치는 바람과 다음 사고가 언제 날지 모른다는 스릴감(나는 하루에 4번의 스쿠터 사고를 본 것 같다). 비록 장맛비가 쏟아져 내리기 전까지였지만 말이 다. 도시의 많은 절들을 방문하고, 중국의 영향을 받은 빈따 이 (Bin Tai) 시장, 놀랄 만한 전쟁 기념 박물관, 그리고 46A 에서 유명한 반쎄오(banh xeo 돼지 고기, 새우 그리고 숙주 나물이 들어있는 바삭한 크레이프)를 먹느라 바빴던 아침은 열대 소나기 따위에 꺾일 만한 것이 아니었다. 그저 베트남 의 설탕을 넣은 아이스 커피를 사러 들르고, 판초를 뒤집어 쓰고, 다시 길을 나설 뿐이었다.

My first day in Saigon was more than I could have hoped for. The half-day on the back of a scooter—from hearing the unique language, and moving as one with the 6 million mopeds on the streets, to smelling the mouthwatering aromas wafting from the many of food carts—sparked a titillating jolt through all my senses, and triggered my hunger for more of Vietnam. But all good things must come to an end.

My end came at the conclusion of the “Xe Om” tour where I was almost scammed out of my money. Nothing too serious, but just a word of caution to all travelers: try and set a reasonable price before agreeing to partake in anything, and for extra caution, ask to pay half of the payment in the beginning and the other half at the end. If you do end up drawing the shortest straw, just think of it as all part of the experience. Make up for it by finding the nearest food cart serving grilled octopus or buttered snails, order a plate along with a bottle of Saigon beer (one of the best I’ve tried yet) and bellow out “tram phan tram” as you clink glasses with your neighbor. It’s all part of Saigon’s charm.

While in the area, don’t miss out on the major sights such as the Mekong Delta River Tours, the Cai Be Floating Market to watch specialty wholesalers mingle with customers cruising the market in smaller row boats, the Cu Chi Underground Tunnels used by guerilla Viet Cong forces during the American War (the Vietnam War), or the myriad of markets in the city, particularly the central Ben Thanh Market, to experience haggling first-hand. 사이공에서 나의 첫날은 내가 상상했던 것 이상이었다. 반 나절을 스쿠터 뒤에서 보냈고 - 독특한 언어를 듣고, 거리에 서 600만 명의 모페드들과 함께 달리고, 음식 카트로부터 입 에 침이 고이도록 퍼지는 냄새를 맡고 - 내 모든 감각들로 흥 미를 돋우는 즐거움들을 유발했고, 베트남을 더 알고 싶다 는 욕구에 휩싸이게 됐다. 하지만 모든 좋은 일에는 끝이 있 는 법. 나의 즐거움은 Xe om 투어가 끝나면서 사기 당할 뻔 하면서 끝이 났다. 별로 심각한 것은 아니었다. 하지만 여행 객들에게 충고하자면, 무언가를 하기 전에 꼭 적당한 가격을 측정하라는 것이다. 더 나아가, 처음에 가격의 반을 내고 끝 날 때 또 다른 반을 낼 수 있는지 알아보는 것도 좋은 방법이 다. 만약 최악의 상황에 직면했다면, 그냥 좋은 경험 했다고 생각하는 게 좋을 것이다. 나쁜 선택들을 만회하기 위해서는 제일 가까운 구운 문어나 버터 바른 달팽이를 파는 음식 카 트에 들려서 음식 한 접시와 사이공 맥주 한 병(내가 마셔본 맥주 중 최고였다)을 시키고 옆 사람들과 건배하면서 짬판짬 (tram phan tram 원샷)을 하는 것이 좋다. 이것이 모두 사 이공의 매력 중에 하나이다. 그곳에 있는 동안 유명한 명소들, 메콩 델타 강(Mekong Delta river) 투어, 전문적인 도매상들과 작은 줄을 이루고 있는 시장을 순항하고 있는 손님들이 뒤섞여 있는 카이베 (Cai Be) 수상시장, 미국전쟁에서 게릴라 베트콩들이 사용했 던 꾸찌 터널 혹은 도시 안에 있는 수많은 시장, 특히 중심부 의 벤탄시장에서 직접 흥정하는 경험을 놓치지 않길 바란다.

Social Explorer Network Reversing the smartphone-reliant populace for social values 스마트폰 사회에서 시대를 역행하는 사람들과 잃어가고 있는 사회적 가치를 찾는 사람들 Han Soul, Kim Myung-joon, In Soo-hwan 여러분도 요즘 대세인 스마트폰을 다들 가지고 계시죠?

Is there anyone who does not have a trendy smartphone? 스마트폰, 저도 참 좋아하는데요. 너무 좋아해서 그런지 자 나 깨나 만지작거리고 있는 저를 발견하면 스마트폰이 없었 던 시절에는 어떻게 살았을까 하는 생각이 문득 들었습니다!

I personally really like it a lot and it lives with me in every moment. While fiddling with my smartphone, I came to wonder how we lived in a time when smartphones did not exist.

어릴 적부터 핸드폰의 실용성을 강조하시던 아버지 덕에 최신 기능의 휴대폰은 항상 친구를 통해 경험했던 시절이나, 사회에서 스마트폰 혁명이 일어나고 있던 군복무 시절에는 마냥 대세를 이루고 있던 핸드폰에 대한 동경심이 강했던 것 같습니다. 이 동경심 때문인지 스마트기능이 없는 블랙베리 폰을 사겠다던 군대 동기를 괜히 나서서 말리는 해괴망측한 행동까지 저지르고 말았습니다.

For me, I came to have aspirations for smartphones as my father always emphasized the practicality and I was serving in the military, where smartphones were considered as devices of the gods. This aspiration led me to extremely scandalous actions of stopping my military buddy from purchasing a Blackberry, which any smartphone functions.

제가 스마트폰의 노예가 되어 헤어 나오지 못하는 동안 스 마트폰의 폐해를 깨닫고 행동으로 옮기고 있는 사람들이 있 습니다! 첫째는 바로 ‘덤폰’(dumb-phone, 일명 바보폰) 사 용자의 급증인데요. 미국에서는 스마트폰 이용자가 급증하 고 있지만 반대로 다양한 기능으로 시간을 앗아가는 스마트 폰이 싫어서 피처폰(바보폰)을 재개통하는 사람도 늘어나고 있다고 합니다. 또한 실제로 영국에서는 스마트폰 이용자의 요청에 따라 스마트폰 서비스를 일정기간 동안 중지시켜주 는 대신 ‘바보폰’을 대여해주는 서비스 시스템을 구축하였다 고 합니다.

In the U.S., although the number of smartphone users is increasing, the number of people reopening the dumb phone is also increasing. Also in the U.K. there is a system where a person can twist their smartphone plans and let the person borrow a dumb phone for a certain period of time. 스마트폰의 폐단으로 이용자의 시간이 뺏기고, 소통 단절 이라는 심각한 부작용이 있습니다. 소중한 친구들이나 가족 과의 만남의 시간에 즐거운 대화를 나누다가 어느새 부터인 가 서로의 스마트폰에 열중하느라 서로 대화의 시간이 줄어 든 경우가 있었나요? 이에 대해 공감하시는 분들이 있으리라 생각됩니다.

강남역셀리어학원 영어의 리듬감을 형성하는 모음. -개념 이해하기 모음의 발음은 구강 내에서의 혀와 턱의 위치, 입술의 모양, 그리고 혀와 입술 근육의 긴장도에 따라 달라집니다. 영어 모음을 정확하게 발음하려면 우리말과 영어의 모음 발음들이 어떤 차이가 있는지 먼저 이 해합니다. 또한 한국어 모음과 유사한 영어 모음은 그 차이만큼 바꾸어서 연습하고 한국어에 없는 생소한 영어의 모음은 혀와 입술이 익숙해져서 정확하고 자연스럽게 발음이 될 때까지 꾸준히 반복해서 연습을 해야 합니다. 이번 단원에서는 영어 알파벳의 모음들을 정확하게 발음하기 위한 철자별 발음규칙 및 강세패턴을 익힐 것입니다. 열심히 따라하면 곧 원어민처럼 리듬감 넘치는 영어로 자신있게 말할 수 있을 것 입니다.

Chapter1. 모음 트레이닝을 하기 전에 에이이이아이 어오우이유

왜 같은 모음을 한국인과 외국인이 다르게 읽을까요?

우리나라 사람에게 모음이 뭐냐고 물어보면 ‘아, 에, 이, 오, 우’ 또는 ‘아, 야, 어, 여, 오, 요, 우, 유, 으, 이’라고 말할 겁니다. 자음이 뭐냐고 물어보면 ‘ㄱ’ 에서 ‘ㅎ’까지라고 말을 하겠죠. 그러나 이러한 자음과 모음의 구분은 우리말에서나 해당될 뿐, 다른 언어에서는 차이가 있습니다. 세상에 존재하는 모든 언어에는 자음과 모음이 존재하는데요. 그러면 자음과 모음이란 무엇을 말하는 걸까요? 모음에서 가장 중요한 핵심은 바로 ‘고정’이 되었느냐는 것입니다. 즉 기본적으로 모음은 혀가 구강 내에서 어떠한 막힘이나 간섭 없이 특 정한 위치에 멈추어 있는 소리입니다. 모음은 보통 목에 있는 성대가 울리는 소리인데요. 목에서 성대가 울리고 있을 때 구강 내에서 혀가 고 정되어 있는 위치가 다르기 때문에 다른 소리로 들리게 되는 것이죠. 우리말로 ‘아’, ‘에’, ‘이’, ‘오’, ‘우’ 소리를 내보면 목이 울리면서 혀가 각 소리마다 다른 위치에서 멈춰 있는 느낌이 들 겁니다. 그렇다면 자음은 과연 무엇일까요? 자음은 모음과는 반대되는 개념으로 혀가 구강 내에 고정되어 있는 소리가 아닌 ‘접촉’이 일어나는 소 리입니다. 즉 모음이 입 안에 떠 있는 소리라면 자음은 입술 또는 혀가 특정 위치에 붙거나 붙으려고 하면서 나는 소리이죠. 우리말로 ‘가, 나, 다, 라, 마, 바, 사, ……’를 발음해보면 각 자음을 발음할 때 혀나 입술이 특정한 위치를 향해 붙으려 하는 것을 느낄 수 있을 겁니다. 우리말 ‘이’ 발음의 혀의 위치

그렇다면 모음과 자음 두 소리 중에 어떤 소리가 더 큰소리일까요? 당연히 모음이 훨씬 더 큰 소 리입니다. 자음은 접촉이 일어나다 보니 접촉 부위에서 에너지에 손실이 생기는 만큼 소리가 작아 지는 반면, 모음은 접촉이 전혀 없기 때문에 성대에서 울리는 소리 그대로의 에너지가 밖으로 전달 되어 큰 소리가 됩니다. 예를 들면 영어 자음에서 가장 작은 소리인 와 가장 큰 소리인 와의 차이는 약 1:700입니다. 매우 큰 차이죠. 실제로 가장 작은 모음도 가장 큰 자음 보다 보통 두 배 이 상 크다고 하니 모음이 훨씬 더 큰 소리인 것입니다. 우리말 ‘ㅅ’의 발음

쉽게 말하면, 단어를 하나의 집으로 비유했을 때 모음은 아주 큰 소리이기 때문에 집을 받쳐주는 기둥 과 내벽의 역할을 하고 자음은 집에 외관을 아름답게 꾸며주는 지붕과 외벽, 그리고 창문 역할을 하는 것 입니다. 그렇기 때문에 모음 발음이 좋아지면 기반이 튼튼해져서 영어에 리듬감이 좋아지게 되고 자음 발 음이 좋아지면 집의 외관이 아름다워져 영어가 화려하고 유창하게 들리는 것입니다.

영어를 잘하려면 탄탄한 리듬감과 명료하고 정확한 모음과 자음 발음으로 ‘단어’라는 집을 먼저 지어야 합니다. 그런 다음 강세, 연음, 억양, 템포, 호흡이라는 아름답고 튼튼한 정원과 울타리로 ‘문장’이라는 저택을 꾸며야 하죠. 그 이후 에 문장력을 바탕으로 말하기(Speaking)와 듣기(Listening)이라는 ‘마을’을 정복해야 합니다. 그러기 위해서는 집부터 튼튼하게 짓는 것이 우선이기 때문에, 우리는 집의 뼈대인 모음과 외관인 자음부터 배우기로 하겠습니다.
