Editor’s letter It’s winter in south-east Queensland … which means clear blue skies, crisp cool mornings and average daytime temperatures in the low 20s. It’s the perfect weather to entice many visitors to our beautiful part of the world so in this edition we have, hopefully, something for everyone. Our ‘leading lady’ is the timeless Jane Fonda. Now in her 70s, Ms Fonda is still starring in hit films and turning heads on the red carpet. Her interview is just like the lady herself, captivating, classy and just a little bit cheeky. On a personal note, I am feeling really refreshed after recently spending four weeks exploring the ‘magic mountains’ of Canada and Alaska. Simply breathtaking! And while I was shivering in the snow, our new travel contributor Keri Thomas was soaking up the sun in Jordan, a fascinating land of romance, myth and majesty. You can read about our very different, but equally amazing, trips in the Well Travelled section. Moving on to the rest of the magazine, for foodies we’ve provided a delicious rum spice cake recipe, wine experts can taste test some quality Australian reds and music lovers might like to book a ticket to see rocker Rick Springfield during his first ever national tour. Car enthusiasts will enjoy reading about the new Maserati Quattroporte and Volvo’s foray

into motor racing, while boaties should jump on board the 1955 heritage ferry, M.V. Kilkie. If fashion is your thing, don’t miss our story on Ralph Lauren, which takes a fascinating look at the history behind both the man and the brand. We also preview what’s on offer at this year’s Mercedes-Benz Fashion Festival Brisbane and showcase the stylish new Michelangelo boutique in Sanctuary Cove. Speaking of Sanctuary Cove, winter is the perfect time to explore this wonderful waterfront precinct … which is why in this edition we have included a comprehensive 36-page guide to The Marine Village. The informative ‘mini mag’ showcases many of the boutiques, dining venues, service providers and retail facilities that can be found in and around The Village. With plenty of free parking and the opportunity to win a $250 Marine Village Gift Voucher each month, there has never been a better time to head on out to the Cove. So if you are a visitor to our shores … welcome; if you are a regular reader … welcome back. We hope you enjoy this edition of the magazine.

Leading lady

Jane Fonda continues to defy her age … starring in a new hit series and taking on a leading role in the upcoming comedy, This is Where I Leave You.

Words sian edwards/ The Interview People

Actress, writer, political activist, model and fitness guru, Jane Fonda, 76, stars in the HBO hit, The Newsroom and is in an upcoming comedy, This is Where I Leave You, with an ensemble cast including actors Tina Fey, Adam Driver and Jason Bateman. The acclaimed movie star has won two Academy Awards, an Emmy Award and seven Golden Globe Awards. She announced her retirement from acting in 1991, but returned in 2005 with Monster-in-Law, and Georgia Rule, in 2007. She also produced and starred in several exercise videos between 1982 and 1995. Jane married her first husband Roger Vadim in 1965 and had a daughter, Vanessa, born in 1968 (named for Vanessa Redgrave). In 1973, following her divorce from Vadim, she married activist Tom Hayden. Their son, Troy, was born in 1973. Jane and Tom also adopted an African-American teenager, Mary Luana Williams, who was the daughter of members of the Black Panthers. After divorcing Tom, Jane married her third husband, cable-TV tycoon and CNN founder, Ted Turner, in 1991. They divorced in 2001. Since 2009, Jane has been in a relationship with record producer, Richard Perry.

You did some press for Monster-In-Law several years ago. The interviewer asked you why you were taking the part, and you said that one of the reasons was that they had made you a very good offer, but it seems with The Newsroom you really discovered your acting mojo? I like the way you put that. Well let’s see. I left the business for fifteen years because I didn’t find joy in acting anymore, and my marriage to Ted Turner taught me to laugh again. I don’t remember saying I came back because of money, I came back because I knew I would enjoy it again. And that was the smartest move I ever made, coming back in a movie with J-Lo, because people would see the movie because of her and rediscover me. And that was a part that was better than hers; I don’t know why she did that movie. But yeah, I am enjoying it more than I did before, and the parts, between Nancy Reagan and The Newsroom and with this next movie – This is Where I Leave You – they are very different kinds of parts and it’s a lot of fun. Do you watch Girls? I do, and I just saw the new Coen Brothers movie that Adam is in, too. This is the real deal this guy, he is something else. He’s fascinating. They all are.

In the book, This is Where I Leave You, your character is fun to read. She’s a little over the top. Is that an element you related to? It’s totally an element of this and I am also like that in life too. I have issues with my children because I tend to … give up too much information (laughs). I know you’re a fan of improvisation … Yes, Coming Home for example. A lot of those scenes were improvised, although all three writers won Academy Awards for it (laughs). But comedy is different, Tina Fey and Jason Bateman and Adam Driver are so adept at improvising funny, and I am awestruck by them. Do you look at your old workout tapes? No, I look at my new ones. I do new ones now, Jane Fonda’s Prime Time, I have a new brand Prime Time for older boomers and stuff. I have a fake knee and a fake hip and I just feel lucky to be alive at a time when they can replace my parts. But I am 76, and your body does tend to decline, but it doesn’t define who you are. I mean, it doesn’t define who I am. I am much happier than I ever thought I would be at this age and I think that has something to do with it too. I am productive, I am working, I have good friends. >>

You are very much a glamorous woman, and I just wondered if you could talk about how you maintain yourself. Physically? Good genes and a lot of money. I don’t know. I ate way too much last night. I do have good genes and I am careful about what I eat, and I try to work out whenever I have time.

How important are family values to you? When you get to be my age, you think a lot about the end, and inevitably, if you are smart, you realise that when the end comes, what matters is not how many films you made or how many awards you win, it’s, ‘Do you have love? Are there people who love you? Will they be with you?’ And you want to be sure that between now and the end you have earned that love. So, I think a lot of the latter part of life has to be spent earning love, being worthy of love from your family and friends. And friends become even more important than when you are younger. Do you give any advice to up and coming actors? As far as acting, I am still just learning. I feel like I am just learning, which I think is a good thing. If you are smart, until you die you are always learning. But if I was advising myself when I was 20, the things I would say is that, ‘Remember ‘no’ is a complete sentence,’. I didn’t know how to say no. And the other one is, ‘It gets better.’

Skin Renew CleanSing BRuSh

What was the most memorable film you made and the most enjoyable? Coming Home was a very important movie for me because it was the first one that was my idea. I had spent three years working with active service people and I wanted to put what I had learned into a movie about veterans, and so it was very, very meaningful to me. It’s like choosing your favourite children. Klute I think is one of the best movies that I ever made, from every point of view, the cinematography, the music, the sound, the direction, the script, everything. But then, On Golden Pond, which I produced for my dad … he died five months later, so being able to have that experience in a movie, where our roles were so similar to real life, I just feel blessed to be able to have had that experience.

Cleans the skin thoroughly with gentle soniC vibration. • approximately 150,000 silky micro fine bristles deep cleanse the pores and the skin. • removes sebum, dead skin cells, make-up and sunscreen residue from the skin more effectively than manual cleansing. • skin is left spotlessly clean and ready for further skin treatment. • 10,000 sonic vibrations per minute for effective yet irritation free cleansing. • Performs micro-massage to stimulate micro circulation and improve skin tone. • suitable for all skin types. • waterproof – so it can be used in the shower.

How was your relationship with your dad in real life? Did you see On Golden Pond? It was about like that. It was dysfunctional and it was hard. But I loved him.

• affordable.

Do the dynamics in this latest movie reflect your own experience of family? Honey, where I come from, you can’t find more dysfunction, I totally relate to the dysfunction in the movie and I totally relate to being a woman who talks too much inappropriately and has children that I don’t understand and children that don’t understand me. I think it’s very universal, just a little heightened, which is what happens in a comedy. >>

NOT AVAILABLE ONLINE “What matters is not how many films you made or how many awards you win, it’s … Are there people who love you?” – Jane Fonda

How do you view Hollywood now compared to when you started? It’s very different. When I started, a movie would open and it would be given time to find an audience or not, but there would be at least a matter of weeks or months where it would be in theatres. There weren’t as many movies being released and it didn’t cost so much to advertise them or publicise them and so they would come out and they would stay in the theatres so a young actor could find a following. But now, because it’s so expensive to promote a film, it opens on a Friday and they know by Sunday if they are going to close it or not. So it’s very, very hard for a film to find an audience and for young actors just to find fans and a following, so that’s one thing that’s different. And the whole celebrity focus is different, just that you have to be a celebrity and paparazzi. Paparazzi didn’t exist when I was coming up so that’s really different, the cult of celebrity. What is your favourite book or musical artist? I don’t know; whatever the last book I read was. It’s too hard to answer that. Favourite musical artist, Beethoven, Dave Brubeck, Billie Holiday, Bonnie Raitt. You seem remarkably youthful. To what do you attribute that? Thank you. Well, yeah, it’s true. But there’s a difference between ... the old view of aging was you are born, you peak at mid life and then you decline into decrepitude. And on the purely physical level that can be the case, I mean, I am basically falling apart like an old jalopy, but this is a period of history where you can have things replaced. But on a much more important and profound level, another analogy rather than the arch, is a staircase. Because in terms of wisdom and becoming a fully-realised human being, on spiritual and psychological levels, you are ascending, you are not declining. And as long as you are aware of that and work for that, then aging can be very beautiful, which is great, since we have so much longer to age in. The entire life span has an entire, additional adult life added on for more than our grandparents or my grandparents were. So it’s good to be able to use that extra time to go up the stairs instead of down the arch.

Dare to dream Susan Lang-Lemckert uncovers the history behind Ralph Lauren – one of the world’s most successful fashion houses. It’s all about the dreams. Of a young boy whose heroes – who included President John F Kennedy and film stars James Stewart and Douglas Fairbanks Jr – epitomised his passion for class and style. Of a young man who took as a compliment his boss’s remark that ‘the world isn’t ready for Ralph Lauren [designs]’. And of an older man whose dreams have taken his name and style to every corner of the world. Ralph’s father Frank, a migrant from Belarus, was an artist who supported the family by painting houses when creative work was hard to find. “But he was [always] artistic,” said his nowfamous son. “When I went to see his work, it was special.”

26

His flair for style and entrepreneurship saw Ralph selling ties to classmates and beginning a business degree before going into clothing retail, his true calling. Inspired by Douglas Fairbanks Jr, Ralph designed a wide, European-style tie and presented it to his boss, who failed to see the innovative accessory’s commercial potential. Undeterred, Ralph left their employ to establish himself as a designer and manufacturer of quality neckties that he sold to small shops in New York. Then came a momentous order from retailer Neiman Marcus – for 100 dozen ties – and Ralph Lauren was on his way. Ralph founded Polo Ralph Lauren – so named due to the sport’s association with sophistication

and exclusivity – in 1967, and sold his own designs alongside more established brands at a necktie store he established with financial backing from clothing manufacturer Norman Hilton. Then, in 1969, the first exclusive Polo Ralph Lauren outlet – and the world’s first store-withina-store – opened in Bloomingdale’s. With his reputation growing rapidly, the range expanded to include firstly menswear, then womenswear – which introduced the now-famous polo player emblem on the cuff of women’s tailored shirts. Even the company’s advertising campaigns were ground-breaking – depicting grand-scale images that celebrated American life, and often starred non-professional models. >>

The Rhinelander Mansion – Ralph Lauren’s New York flagship store Madison Avenue’s Rhinelander Mansion, home to Ralph Lauren’s New York flagship store, has a fascinating history. Commissioned by widowed heiress Gertrude Rhinelander Waldo, the proposed limestone residence was, according to a Real Estate Record and Guide report, going to be ‘quite unique in design.’ But Mrs Waldo seemed in no hurry to build, living nearby at different times with her sister, Laura, or at the [old] Hotel Savoy while her personal travails took precedence over construction. These included frequent appearances in court – including financial disputes with one Mr Schieffelin, a gentleman with whom she was reportedly ‘keeping company’; with a subcontractor working on the Rhinelander Mansion; and a protracted and very expensive legal battle with a former servant who’d originally claimed that Mrs Waldo owed her $5.00. Building finally began in 1894, the emerging edifice featuring a delicate Loire Valley trim and so many windows it was described as looking like someone had taken a shotgun to it. Locals said the top floor housed a ballroom and 2,000 electric lights – and only two servants’ bedrooms, though the New York Times estimated the Rhinelander would require a staff of at least a dozen. Completed in 1898, Mrs Waldo never did move into Rhinelander Mansion, and finally passed away in 1914 without having lived there. For the best part of the next century the impressive building was leased by different entities – including a local church – for various periods of time, until Ralph Lauren purchased it in 1983. Following 18 months of renovations, the residence opened as the label’s New York flagship store. Until recent years the Rhinelander Mansion showcased Ralph Lauren menswear, womenswear and furnishings, but now it’s dedicated entirely to outfitting gentlemen, with womenswear and homewares having been relocated to a new store across the street.

27

A veritable artform of their own, these advertisements became as iconic as the fine fashions they featured, and reflect Ralph Lauren’s philosophy on design. “The clothes that I design and everything I've done is about life and how people live and how they want to live and how they dream they'll live. That's what I do;” he has said.

The company’s forays into official event America’s Cup, the US Open, Wimbledon and both summer and winter Olympic Games. Charitable activities have also featured strongly in Ralph Lauren’s life, with the establishment of initiatives like the Ralph Lauren

The mid-70s saw Ralph Lauren’s designs grace the silver screen in The Great Gatsby and Annie Hall, the latter inspiring a trend for tailored shirts, ties and jackets for women. This brought to full circle the professional journey of an artisan who, in his own words, had always been ‘very influenced by movies. I was very influenced by a world that had a sense of dream.’ And that dream continued with the range continually expanding into new realms –

Centre for Cancer Care and Prevention, the Pink Pony Campaign, Ralph Lauren Volunteers and the American Heroes Fund being only a few. His life’s journey has been a remarkable story of realising dreams that even the man himself finds surprising. “My life has been a dream,” he has said. “If someone had to write a story about it, it would seem a little unreal. It's the kind of story I would read and say, ‘Nah, that's not possible’.” But it was. That’s how it is with dreams.

Pink Pony Campaign For more than 20 years, Ralph Lauren has been committed to the fight against cancer. He co-founded the Nina Hyde Center for Breast Cancer Research and designed the first logo for the CFDA’S successful ‘Fashion Targets Breast Cancer’ campaign. In 2000, he designated the iconic Polo Pony as the symbol for the Pink Pony Campaign, which is Ralph Lauren Corporation’s international initiative in the fight against cancer. Pink Pony’s mission is to reduce disparities in cancer care in medically underserved communities and to ensure that treatment is available at an earlier, more curable stage. Locally, the Pink Pony Campaign directly benefits Cancer Australia (formerly the National Breast and Ovarian Cancer Centre) who receive 25 per cent from the sale of Pink Pony product. This annual donation assists in funding the Australian Rural Nurse Scholarships and Community Seeding Grants that in turn train rural nurses in breast cancer patient care and facilitates community-based programs for breast cancer patients.

T

To date, the Pink Pony campaign in Australia has raised more than $650,000 of which every cent has stayed in Australia to help support local nurses and regional communities across the country. In May 2014, Ralph Lauren Corporation and The Royal Marsden, the largest and most comprehensive cancer centre in Europe, announced a new partnership to fund a state-ofthe-art breast cancer research facility. The Ralph Lauren Centre for Breast Cancer Research will be housed in a new facility at The Royal Marsden’s Chelsea hospital. Staffed by a team of world-renowned clinicians and scientists working with the latest in cancer research technology, the centre will be dedicated to advancing breast cancer research with the goal of improving early diagnosis and the development of new treatments for breast cancer. “Fighting breast cancer has been a longstanding goal of mine,” said Mr Lauren, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Ralph Lauren Corporation. “It is my great hope that this partnership advances cancer treatment options and outcomes for patients around the world.”

Changing seasons With the mild chill of the Brisbane winter comes the exhilarating anticipation of the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Festival.

Talulah Spring 2014 Collection Words Henrietta Dups

Brisbane’s Mercedes-Benz Fashion Festival is always such a highlight of my fashion calendar – not just because it is a celebration staged in my own backyard, but it is also a reminder to the national stage that Brisbane is a real player in cutting-edge fashion, innovation and design. While Sydney brings a Parisian nonchalance, and Melbourne its own London glamour, Brisbane offers something entirely different; think St Barts in the big smoke, or Mediterranean yachting with city stops. Fashion mogul Sacha Drake says of her hometown: “Brisbane women are not afraid to

32

dress in their own style. [Think] laid back glamour, lots of colour, [and] easy style with a unique edge.” Deanne Mayocchi, of rising label Maiocchi, is similarly in tune with the casual elegance of our subtropical style. “Brisbane’s fashion style is colourful, quirky and fun. We don’t take things too seriously but love the chance to frock up,” she says. “The great thing about Brisbane is that it is metro living adapted for its warmer climate and neighbouring coastline,” adds Kelli Wharton, creative director of Talulah. “You can be city chic, mixing in elements of florals, prints and colours that are inspired by warm, holiday weather.”

It is this nonchalant, casual glamour which underpins the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Festival (MBFF) year after year. We see the luxurious fabrics, classy silhouettes and haute styling of the high fashion runways, mixed back with the effortless chic of wearable design. There is an art to Brisbane’s deluxe casual style. You can expect Lisa Brown’s spring/summer 14-15 collection to draw on a retro Californian vibe … and look out for her hallmark attention to detail, unique prints and use of premium natural fibres. Luxury silks, linens, and cottons are a mainstay of the Lisa Brown label, along with the feminine charm of her silhouettes.

Talulah Spring 2014 Collection

Celebrating over ten years as a successful national designer, Sacha Drake releases another signature collection of convertible and versatile pieces with a focus on unique and personally designed prints. Sacha has drawn inspiration from photographs, prints, lattice work, shadow play and even her own hand writing to emphasise the feminine in her collection. Kelli Wharton’s inspiration for Talulah’s spring 2014 collection is a mood board featuring pink and lilac hued florals, braids, frothing surf, palm fronds and a hint of Marrakesh. Kelli’s collection never disappoints and this season

she features her ever popular playsuits and swimwear in a myriad of prints. For the fashion conscious man, local label Urbbana has been making waves in the international market, and will showcase its collection during the Festival. Expect a mix of patterns, dominated by checked argyle, Prince of Wales, Madras, and houndstooth. Earthy tones will underpin the collection, as will the luxury fabrics used by its designer, Sam Abi. Velvet blazers will continue from last year’s comeback – and rightly so, who doesn’t love a good smoking jacket? >>

33

Myer Spring/Summer Fashion

Other Australian designers who will feature in the Festival include Ginger & Smart, Lee Matthews, Easton Pearson, George Wu, Tengdahl and Darb Couture. In addition to previewing the collections of these established names in Australian Fashion, be sure to catch the Emerging Designers Group Show featuring a selection of Queensland’s most talented and gifted new designers. It will be a chance to see what the freshest faces envisage in our sartorial future, as well as supporting new talent. If you are an MBFF regular, then you will be pleased to know the key festival events once again feature in the calendar. The official opening of the runway program, The Myer Spring Summer 15 Fashion Show, will take to the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Festival Brisbane runway on Opening Night. This cuttingedge show features the latest collections from its stable of renowned Australian designers. Other showcase events include the MercedesBenz Highlights Parade & Wrap Party, the Monili Jewellers Bridal Group Show and the Queens Plaza High Tea and Fashion Trends. To answer perhaps the most important question ‘what shall we wear front row during the Festival?’ we turn to the designers themselves; “Finding your own style is important,” declares Kelli Wharton of Talulah. “Being front row is

34

an exciting opportunity to be snapped by the media attending the runway event. To stand out I recommend dresses in something that is on trend for the upcoming season [and that] the runway is showcasing.”

You should be doing your best to epitomise Brisbane’s cool style of laid back luxury, and combine colour pops with trendy accessories and luxury footwear.

Lisa Brown advises that we give particular care to the details. Pay attention to your shoes as well as your hair. Layer new season styles with blazers and scarves to ensure your comfort during the show, and at the after-party! Make sure you dress up for the occasion, wear your most fashion forward and classic styles, and don’t be afraid to style it up! Mostly, you should be doing your best to epitomise Brisbane’s cool style of laid back luxury, and combine colour pops with trendy accessories and luxury footwear.

Bags of personality The new Michelangelo boutique at Sanctuary Cove showcases a colourful collection of hand-crafted bags and accessories. The Michelangelo boutique in The Marine Village Sanctuary Cove is a truly unique retail space … everything from the one-of-a-kind display cabinet, fittingly shaped like a handbag, to the luxurious brocade seating and delicate purple chandeliers (five were commissioned, only two survived the journey) has been styled to perfection. But it is the luxurious hand-crafted products that are the true stars … jewel-toned handbags, colourful wallets and miniature coin purses, invitingly displayed throughout the store. The exquisite collection is made from quality French leather with all designs produced as either one-off pieces or very limited editions. Each item is painstakingly hand-stitched, every Swarovski crystal is individually hand-set and all bags come with a warranty and replacement policy … although you may not get exactly the same bag due to the exclusivity of the designs. Sanctuary Cove resident Githa Silvester is the driving force behind Michelangelo in Australia and is very passionate about both the product and the branding.

36

“When I first saw the bags in Europe I thought I’d bring back some samples just to see what other people thought,” Githa explains. “Everybody loved them so I started negotiations to get the Australian distribution rights.” Githa worked closely with the Michelangelo team for over a year before brokering the deal which saw her establish the only Michelangelo store in Australia. “The company has been operating for 33 years and it was very important to them that my focus was on building brand awareness,” Githa says. “That is why I decided to establish the store here in The Marine Village rather than opening in a big shopping centre … the product is a destination product and this is a destination store.” Once she had chosen the location, Githa’s vision was to design a space that not only showcased the beautiful products but also offered her clientele a unique retail experience. “I wanted to create something bright and vibrant and really welcoming,” she explains. “I love purple so we have used that as the accent colour throughout the store, and because each bag is

a work of art we had 3D ‘frames’ hand-painted on the wall to accentuate the individual pieces. “I come from a customer service background so it was really important that when the ladies (or gentlemen) come in they feel comfortable and relaxed and I think we’ve achieved that.” Githa also owns and operates a Tendence watch store in The Marine Village and feels the location is a perfect fit for both brands. “Sanctuary Cove is very unique from a retail perspective,” she says. “No other shopping precinct has that relaxed, luxury feel. You can come out here and enjoy lunch at one of the restaurants, then have a stroll around. “People are now coming into The Marine Village specifically to go to the Michelangelo or Tendence store and that’s wonderful because it breathes life into both brands and drives traffic into Sanctuary Cove.” Michelangelo 32A Masthead Way, Sanctuary Cove +61 7 5514 8162

Experience the Michelangelo difference Michelangelo Milan – a name synonymous with breathtaking artworks. Michelangelo Milan opened its first Australian store at Sanctuary Cove this year, setting a new standard in Italian luxury. The brand offers a unique range of luxury handbags and shoes handcrafted from the finest materials sourced from around the world. A little known Italian phenomenon, Michelangelo Milan was first launched more than 30 years ago. The brand, with its head office based in Milan, offers a range of handbags you won’t see anywhere else, quite literally. Each handbag is specifically designed, and often only one is produced. The philosophy behind the brand is that which underpinned the works of Michelangelo himself. To create a piece of art, unlike any other, that people are proud to own, and showcase. The Michelangelo range includes splashes of colour, Swarovski crystals and some of the finest leathers from France. Each bag is handcrafted, from the stitching to the Swarovski crystals, which are hand set.

The brand has launched in Australia to an overwhelming reception from locals and nationals, with women flying in from around the country to experience the Michelangelo difference. Exclusively owned in Australia by Sanctuary Cove resident Githa Silvester, there are big plans for the brand in Australia. The first step is to showcase in late August 2014 at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Festival Brisbane. The brand has been listed in the Mercedes-Benz Group show among some of Australia’s top designers, and the show will blow the audience away! With a range and store unlike anything in Australia, you are invited to experience the Michelangelo difference at Sanctuary Cove.

Are you game? From Mainland China 700 years ago to a restaurant near you today… Peking Duck is a dish with a rich history.

Words TONY HARPER

When it comes to eating – at least if you are carnivorous in your habits – the duck is an amazing animal challenged only by the pig in terms of wonder-dishes and obsession. But the duck holds an ace … Peking Duck. It’s a dish – in fact a series of dishes – that has come from Mainland China with more than a millennium in its wake and it has made its way from the emperor’s table to every country on the planet. The basics sound simple – steamed pancakes, a smear of bean sauce, scallions, cucumber sticks and the skin of a roast duck. What remains – duck meat and bones – is then used to make either soup or noodles. Some places do things slightly differently, making a first course of the skin with a sugar and garlic dipping sauce, then using the meat in the pancakes and with the carcass turned into soup: swings and roundabouts. The magic of Peking Duck lies in the preparation of the duck and the flavours that are slowly ingrained into its skin. It’s a complicated process: air is forced under the skin to separate the skin from the fat; the duck is plunged several

86

times in boiling water, then hung up to dry. While hanging is gets painted with a molasses mix and the cavity rubbed with spices. Then it’s dried, repainted; dried, repainted; dried, repainted until it looks like it’s been French-polished. Finally it gets roasted. Or you can nip down to Chinatown and buy one ready-cooked; less exhausting, more likely to yield a decent result and way less fun. I was thinking about the elaborate carry-on required to make a decent Peking Duck, and the genius of the guy who originally served the dish for some emperor. Nice work. We get all peasantto-God-like with guys like Heston Blumenthal and Ferran Adrià, but are their creations any more amazing than the working of the duck in a palace kitchen some 700 years ago? I don’t reckon so. Since 2008 Melbourne has had a Quanjude restaurant in its collection. Quanjude is a chain of arguably the best exponent of Peking Duck in existence. It began as a specialty restaurant in Beijing back in 1864 after its manager purchased the recipe from a retired palace chef, making the dish available to the

public. 150 years later the original restaurant seats up to 900 guests and has numerous branches across China and Hong Kong. It has its own way of serving: for the first course it’s skin from the breast with the house plum sauce, followed by pancakes using the rest of the skin and meat from the breast and maryland. Soup is made from the bones, head and neck with no other additions. And, while the duck skin goes through the usual ritual, the cavity remains untouched. Here’s why … The Quanjude ducks come to the table straight from the oven (unlike most restaurants in which the ducks are precooked well in advance) so the skin on the breast is crisp and far too delicious to be complicated by pancakes and the rest of the caboodle. As for the soup, there’s Chinese medicine involved here that is well beyond my ken, but basically it’s good for you! Billy Wong from the Pine & Bamboo Restaurant in Brisbane does things in a more traditional manner, offering pancakes with solely skin followed by a second load of pancakes with

a combination of skin and meat, then ending with soup. Where there is no room for argument is the type of ducks that are used. In the early days – centuries ago – the ducks were little black beasts that swam the Nanjing canals. These days a sort of purpose-built breed of mallard – called Pekin – is used: it’s fast growing, the white plumage makes it easy to clean and – thanks to Donald Duck – it’s a familiar looking bird. Yep … Donald was (and I guess still is) a Pekin. After a heap of searching I failed to find exactly how many Pekin Ducks and Peking Ducks are consumed each year. I’m guessing millions of both. The Pekin Duck accounts for 95 per cent of America’s duck meat and I’m guessing America’s consumption looks laughable next to China’s. The cooks among you should have a crack at doing the whole feast: I’ve done it (over a long messy weekend) and it’s kind of fun unless you are the sort of person who assigns a dollar value to every minute of your time (in which case it will be the most expensive meal you’ve ever cooked and eaten).

SubScribe now Only $40* for one year (6 issues).

The shortcut is buying the roast duck and pancakes from one of any number of Chinese specialists and simply assembling the main part of the dish and doing the soup and/or stir-fry. Or … get along to Pine & Bamboo, Dragon Cove or one of the other Peking Duck specialists. I recommend the latter: there’s less washing up.

WINE CELLAR

Red, red wine S.C. Pannell is setting new standards in the Australian red wine industry.

Words TONY HARPER

It’s ten years since Steve Pannell and Fiona Lindquist took the plunge and founded their own wine label, S.C. Pannell. Before then Steve was Chief Red Winemaker at Hardy’s; a rather prestigious role with stability and – I’m guessing – a pretty good salary. Even then, with a senior role in a quite conservative wine company, he was turning heads with his vision and ability. When he made the break it was big news. But whatever prodigy status he had prior to S.C. Pannell it has grown a great deal since. The Pannell surname was well entrenched in Australian wine circles long before the crux of this tale. Steve’s father, Bill Pannell, founded Moss Wood Wines in Margaret River when Steve was still figuring out the buttons on his first school uniform. And there’s little doubt that passion, skills and understanding rubbed off as he grew up amongst the vines and barrels. But if you think it wooed him into winemaking … think again.

92

“I never wanted to be a winemaker when we owned Moss Wood, and when my father asked me if I minded him selling it (in 1984) I said go for it. My father was a full time doctor in Busselton and a part time winemaker which meant all free time and every weekend were spent at the vineyard. The only way out of going to the vineyard was playing sport which I did a lot, two games of cricket (juniors and seniors) every weekend in summer and hockey and football in winter. I didn’t have an unhappy childhood; I just was a kid and didn’t care that much about wine. I loved the sea and fishing and cricket. “… I was exposed unconsciously to a lot of things about wine. I met Len Evans and Brian Croser when I took them crabbing. I could prune and trim and drive a tractor. In the early days we would hand-bottle, label and pack every bottle. After school we would sit on the back of the ute which was laden with cases of Moss Wood and write the names and addresses of people who had ordered wine.

“In 1995 when I joined Hardy’s Bob Hardy came into the winery and gave me an unopened case of 1977 Moss Wood which had my hand writing on it. It was like the closing of the circle and one of the nicest things anyone had ever done for me.” It was during his Hardy’s time that I first ran into Steve while we were judging the Adelaide Wine Show, sometime around 1998, and even then you could smell the fire inside: affable, devoid of ego, but in some ways quite scary – he could see the heart of a reticent wine while most of us were fumbling around in the dark. But this story is about S.C. Pannell, not the past. Fiona and Steve have based themselves in McLaren Vale which seems kind of expected if the Hardy’s time had much impact. And they’ve made the best of the place with Grenache and shiraz as mainstays. But the range is bolstered with a bit of fruit from the Barossa and more from vineyards in

the Adelaide Hills – sauvignon blanc, some Alsace varieties (gris, Riesling, pinot blanc and gewürztraminer), shiraz, and … Nebbiolo. It’s the Nebbiolo that stands my hairs on end. You need to be a Nebbiolo fan to understand the chemistry; why it disappoints more than pleases and why it excites so thoroughly when the stars align. But that’s sort of what happens. And ever since I tasted the very first vintage from S.C. Pannell – the 2004 – I’ve realised that these are Nebbiolos living firmly in the excitement zone. Great Nebbiolo is as hard to pin down as a leprechaun. It walks a tightrope that demands all sorts of things – loads of tannin (but of the right sort), an array of building-site aromas (wet concrete, earth and bitumen) plus some vestige of fruit in a fine, aromatic sort of way. Too much fruit and the wine simply sinks. The Pannell Nebbiolos have – from the inaugural 2004 to the most recent 2012 release – headed Australia’s Nebbiolo charge because they manage to walk the tightrope brilliantly.

For me the Nebbiolo is the wine that sets S.C. Pannell apart from the pack, despite the allure of its other labels; it’s Australia’s best Nebbiolo and has been since the first release. But when put on the spot it’s Grenache – not Nebbiolo – that Steve values most. “That is a hard question but if I was to be pushed … then Grenache,” admits Steve. “I do have a soft spot for the Grenache and if we were to look at the vines and pure quality of the fruit then Grenache would be it. The Nebbiolo is what we drink at home the most often, this is probably due to the fact that I don’t drink as much these days and we can have a bottle of ‘Neb’ open for three days.” The other part of the equation is that Grenache has a long history in Australia while the Nebbiolo story has only just begun. Vine age and the understanding that comes with decades of vintages favours Grenache. But even so there has been a great stylist change to Australian Grenache: the better stuff.

“For so long the Australian red wines scene has been dominated by Shiraz and it has influenced the way we make and appreciate all red wines,” Steve says. “Look at its effect on Cabernet Sauvignon with many Margaret River Cabernets being 15 per cent alcohol and trying to look big, rich and full bodied like Shiraz. “We used to think that we need to make Grenache bigger and richer and that its weakness was that it was medium bodied and we compensated for this by over ripening it or adding Shiraz,” Steve says. “These days with the popularity of Pinot Noir medium bodied is the rage and that is Grenache’s strength not its weakness. I feel that these lighter wines suit much better our climate and the way we live.” He’s right of course. If you are drinking any of the S.C. Pannell wines you’ll find an elegance and lightness, a savoury edge and balance that make them not only good matches for food, but also wines that lure you back for a second, third and fourth glass. Surely that’s what wine is about?

Since there are no Ferrari or Lamborghini sedans, the Quattroporte is the closest you’ll get to an exotic Italian family car. Ferrari and Maserati are both owned by the Fiat group, which unsurprisingly has ended their former rivalry and positioned the first as a pure sports car make and the second as more accessible to a wider range of users, with lower prices. Celebrating its centenary this year, Maserati has flourished with its new identity. It is no less desirable than its fellow Italians, just a different car for a different market. Its gorgeous two-door GranTurismo is available as a coupe or four-seat roadster, the Quattroporte is its luxury sedan and very soon Australians will see the all-new Ghibli sedan, which will bring the brand for the first time in reach of buyers who would formerly have chosen a Mercedes, BMW or Audi. The recently-introduced, all-new Quattroporte has also taken a step toward a broader market, complementing its familiar V8 model with a new V6, as reviewed here, and lately – che bella sorpresa! – even a diesel. Stepping into a V6 Quattroporte S is no compromise, however. It’s the same outwardly handsome and inwardly luxurious car as the new V8 GTS.

94

But because this sixth-generation ‘QP’ (as the affionados call it) is lighter than the superseded model and the 3.0 litre, twin-turbo, 301 kiloWatt V6 almost as powerful as the old V8 motor, performance is virtually the same, Maserati claims. That means 0-100 kmh in 5.1 seconds, top speed of 285 kmh and lower average fuel consumption of 10.4 litres per 100 kms. And the recommended retail price has tumbled to $240,000. We were taken for the debut drive of the Quattroporte V6S to a region where it could demonstrate its qualities as a grand tourer. A 310 km loop from Albury … lunch at Brown Brothers winery, misty alpine scenery at Mt Bogong and Mt Buffalo and sampling local culinary treats at Milawa and Beechworth set the tone. The car drew admiring looks and questions wherever it stopped. The long-nose, short-tail styling has been retained but modernised. This Maserati remains truly handsome. The biggest gains from the new design are in weight and space. Using aluminium for the doors, bonnet, front guards and bootlid, while replacing the V8 with a V6, makes this a notably lighter and more wieldy car. A longer wheelbase overcomes the most common criticism of the old Quattroporte, lack of rear leg room or boot space. The new car has plenty of both, making it a more realistic buying proposition.

The car drew admiring looks and questions wherever it stopped. … This Maserati remains truly handsome.

But unless you’re a tycoon managing an empire from the rear lounge via the optional wi-fi hotspot, you’ll want to be behind the wheel to exercise real power. Along with the new-family engine – the V6 and V8 are related and assembled by Ferrari – the Quattroporte gets an optimised, eight-speed ZF automatic transmission. This delivers the best of two worlds – lower gears for our swift drive on the Great Alpine Road and a tall seventh and eighth for relaxed and economical touring. While one can’t pretend the Quattroporte

isn’t a big luxury car, it does crack along when commanded. Accelerator response is instant and very satisfying and comes with a louder, sharper bark when flaps open to let the exhaust flow more freely. The suspension gives a firm-ish ride even when the Skyhooks adjustable shock absorbers are on

Maserati has always featured its interiors. As well as being comfortable, they’re wellequipped, superbly detailed and wrapped in sumptuous leather. Buyers have a huge choice of upholstery materials, stitching and trim. My heart says the new Quattroporte is not quite as beautiful as its predecessor. But its more

their standard setting. Flick it into Sport and tap a couple of other electronic control options, and all the car’s dynamic responses harden up in a very satisfying manner – it becomes more sports car than sedan.

modern design certainly retains the theme while being much more spacious. With the V6 engine that affords comparable performance, lower fuel consumption and nimbler handling it has to be judged a big step forward.

AT THE WHEEL

Up and racing The Volvo S60 makes an impact on the road as well as the track.

Words chris nixon

I doff my crash helmet to Volvo, which has made great success of its venture into an unlikely forum, Australian V8 Supercar racing. It has taken its modest S60 sedan, plugged in a sophisticated Yamaha-designed ‘Volvo’ V8 engine, and won races in its debut season. That’s almost unheard-of in motor racing. And since the object of the exercise is to raise awareness of the common-or-garden S60 and overcome that tedious Volvo brand stereotype, there are billboards, press ads and

96

even racecar lookalikes in the showrooms to draw customers’ attention. Volvo has traded in this country for decades and while it’s had a band of loyal followers it’s rarely scaled the heights in the prestige car business. It will be interesting to see, come December, what effect the racing program has on its popularity. The range opens at less than $50,000 and includes a variety of sedans and wagons and an SUV variant named XC60.

The S60 will be a surprise for anyone who hasn’t driven a Volvo at all, or for a long time. It’s one of those cars that just feels right, from its ride and handling to its modern, understated interior. The most potent Volvo road car yet is called the S60 Polestar and offers a choice for those inspired to walk into a Volvo showroom because of the achievements in racing. It’s not sold anywhere else yet – Australia is a test market for the global development of Volvo high-performance road cars and motorsport by corporate partner Polestar.

The S60 … it’s one of those cars that just feels right, from its ride and handling to its modern, understated interior. The S60 Polestar costs $99,950 after a recent price reduction and specification upgrade, though it still doesn’t come with a V8. The six-cylinder turbo-charged T6 engine has been given a bigger turbo, new intercooler, revised engine computer-mapping and a racing exhaust to produce 257kW and 500Nm. The six-speed automatic gearbox makes faster changes and has paddle shifters for manual control. In conjunction with electronic launch control, which minimises wheelspin and maximises power to the road via all-wheel drive, the S60 Polestar will accelerate from rest to 100kmh in 4.9 seconds and on to a limited top speed of 250kmh. Chassis upgrades stiffer springs, tailored Öhlins shock absorbers and 19-inch alloy wheels. Brakes now boast six-piston Brembo calipers and 370mm ventilated floating discs with highperformance pads front and rear. Such information is baffling tech-talk for the archetypal Volvo driver – who no longer exists anyway – but essential for enthusiasts choosing a high-performance sedan. But as this is no race car, a full list of safety, comfort and convenience features is included. There are more sedate Volvos for those who don’t want high performance, but many existing owners in particular will be looking forward to the arrival later this year of an all-new XC90 SUV. The current car has been around since 2002 and is enduringly popular for its combination of size, practicality, comfort and style. The new one will have to be brilliant, but will find its happy hunting ground off-road rather than on-track like the S60.

Buoyed by success Held over four days in May, the 2014 Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show (SCIBS) was hailed a success by event organiser Mulpha Sanctuary Cove.

Exhibitor Success Taking advantage of the picture perfect weather, more than 42,000 boating enthusiasts flocked to Sanctuary Cove during the four day event, an increase of 12 per cent on 2013. Mulpha Sanctuary Cove Head of Events Johan Hasser says the growth in exhibitor sales was also up compared with last’s years Show, with $35 million in deals transacted and more expected to flow from leads generated during the event. “The general consensus has been very favourable and exhibitors are thrilled with strong sales and leads throughout the four days of Boat Show,” Johan says. “There has been a big change

98

in sentiment this year, they’re genuinely out to buy. “Bringing an event of this magnitude together is a 12-month operation and the hard work of the team has really paid off this year.” Leading Gold Coast manufacturer Maritimo experienced great results selling three new motor yachts at $2 million each as well as two brokerage boats. Maritimo Sales and Marketing Manager Greg Haines said their sales ranged from the M32 sports cruiser to the M58 cruiser, including the newly released S58 which made its debut at SCIBS. Sunshine Coast-based Multihull Solutions experienced its best show outing with five

catamarans sold for a total of $5.6 million. Multihull Solutions Managing Director Mark Elkington said he expected benefits to keep flowing from the company’s attendance at SCIBS. “This is the best result Multihull Solutions has had from any boat show in Australia,” he said. “And with strong leads generated at this year’s Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show, we expect to continue the sales momentum for the next few months.” Runaway Bay Pontoon Boats, a long-time exhibitor at SCIBS, also experienced a successful four days, selling three boats at the Show, two on display and one new build.

New owners Paul Milner and Tina Coate, have taken over the helm of Sanctuary Cove Boats & Cruises and would love to welcome you aboard. Their fleet of fun and affordable craft includes pontoon hire boats and the M.V. Kilkie, a quaint

If you are after a more hands-on experience, the self-drive pontoon boats can be hired on an hourly or daily basis. These are perfect for fishing trips, weekend picnics or simply exploring the beautiful waterways around the Marina.

1955 heritage ferry which began its life doing the school run on the Maroochy River and is possibly the oldest ferry still operating in Queensland. Since taking over ownership of the business in April, Paul and Tina have been restoring the Kilkie to her former glory and now operate daily cruises departing from The Marine Village. “The Kilkie has been moored at the Marina for 24 years and is part of the fabric of Sanctuary Cove,” explains Paul. “It’s a great little boat and a one-hour cruise costs just $15 for adults and $5 for children, so it’s a fun and affordable experience for the whole family.” The Kilkie is also available for private hire, catering for weddings, corporate functions, senior’s groups, children’s parties and sunset cruises.

Both Paul and Tina have over 20 years experience in the tourism industry in the Kimberley region of Western Australia and say the decision to buy Sanctuary Cove Boats & Cruises was both a lifestyle and business decision. “We were looking for a new opportunity and saw this business for sale,” Paul explains. “We’ve always loved boats and the marina lifestyle, now we’ve got the Kilkie, the pontoon boats and the floating office, which is magic. “Sanctuary Cove is also such a beautiful spot to live … we walk to work, we can visit our families and we get to frequent the local restaurants …” In fact, the pair are so impressed with the dining options they have reintroduced the Sanctuary Cove Restaurant Run, a service which runs between Coomera Waters, Coomera Shores

and The Marine Village on Friday and Saturday nights and Saturday and Sunday lunch time. “Rather than driving for half an hour, guests can be at their favourite restaurant within 10 minutes. We put fairy lights on the Kilkie and it’s a lovely way to get to here and back. “We have had such a warm welcome and so much support from the Sanctuary Cove community, especially the management and the team at the Marina. I think everyone is excited to see the old Kilkie operating again.”

WELL TRAVELLED

Magic mountains Rhonda Oxnam takes a picturesque tour through Canada and Alaska.

104

Rhonda Oxnam & Derek O’Connell at Mt Robson

Capilano Suspension Bridge

Rocky Mountain High … North to Alaska … Planes, Trains and Automobiles … any of these titles could be used to describe our recent adventure through Canada and Alaska, although in actual fact Derek and I also travelled by cruise ship, ice explorer, helicopter, horse and carriage and dog sled during our 19-day APT tour. Our amazing holiday began in Vancouver. One of the first things you notice as you explore this cosmopolitan seaport city is how green everything is. According to our Hop-On Hop-Off tour guide the local government policy is that all city buildings must have at least 30 per cent green space. This is taken to the nth degree at the Vancouver Convention Centre where the entire roof is covered in grass! Of course, any destination of this size has lots to keep tourists entertained. We chose the magnificent Capilano Suspension Bridge and Cliff Walk, just a short shuttle ride from the city centre. It was here that I experienced my first height-induced panic attack of the day as I contemplated the 140 metre long structure suspended 70 metres above the river. However, the fear was quickly replaced by the exhilaration of completing the crossing in record time, thus limiting the time I spent hovering in what seemed like thin air. Back in town, my courage was tested again as we ‘enjoyed’ a 40 second/168.60 metre glass elevator ride to the top of Vancouver Lookout Tower. Naturally, the stunning 360º panoramic views from the Observation Deck were worth the sweaty palms and I highly recommend you include this on your itinerary if you are ever in the area. >>

105

Rocky Mountaineer

The Butchart Gardens

The next step on our grand adventure was the iconic Rocky Mountaineer. I hadn’t paid much attention to this part of the journey when we were in the planning stages so I was pleasantly surprised by the fanfare that accompanied our departure from Vancouver … think grand pianos, bagpipes, uniformed staff lining the tracks as we pulled out … and even more impressed with the amenities and service offered on board. Our two days on the train passed by in a blur of delicious food, great company and stunning scenery and included an overnight stay in Kamloops. As we climbed higher and higher, each turn in the tracks revealed another quaint village, majestic river or snow-capped peak … so beautiful and so different to anything I had ever seen before. But this was just a prelude to what we were to encounter once we entered the Rocky Mountains. Disembarking at Banff, we boarded our coach for the short ride to the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel – a fairytale castle nestled in the foothills of the Banff National Park. With this wonderful old

106

building as our base we helicoptered over the nearby ranges, climbed a mist-shrouded mountain in a gondola, had our first encounter with a Grizzly bear in the wild and posed with a real-life mountie … it was a busy, but enjoyable, couple of days. Back on the bus, we followed the Sea to Sky Highway through some of the stunning peaks, passes, valleys and townships the Rockies are renowned for … First stop was the much-anticipated Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise. The lake itself was still frozen meaning we didn’t get to enjoy the iconic image of the Chateau outlined against the emerald green water, however, the sunrise turning the surrounding snow-capped mountains pure gold more than made up for it. Other overnight stays included Jasper, where the timber cabins and pine-lined lake were picturepostcard perfect; Sun Peaks, where we spotted a coyote lurking outside our window, thus limiting our willingness to venture too far; and Whistler, home of the 2010 Winter Olympics and a Mecca for outdoor sports enthusiasts all year round.

QUALITY CUSTOM SHUTTERS & BLINDS YEARS

Along the way we ventured by ice explorer to the Columbia Icefield, took a walk across the Athabasca Glacier and enjoyed a water safari on Blue River. As we were travelling through National Parks we also enjoyed many wildlife encounters including more bears, elk, whales, marmots, loons and eagles. The final days of the coach itinerary were spent in the picturesque city of Victoria. This charming seaside community has twice been voted the ‘Best City in the Americas’ and it is easy to see why. The lively harbour is a focal point – from here you can join a whale watching tour, board a sea-plane, embark on a salmon fishing adventure or enjoy high tea at the elegant Empress Hotel. Victoria is also home to The Butchart Gardens, a stunning year-round display of flowering plants established in an abandoned quarry over a century ago. Although I am not a gardener, I was enthralled by the colour and variety on show ... again well worth the entry fee. While reluctant to ‘play favourites’, Victoria would have to be among my top ten destinations and a return visit is firmly marked on my Bucket List. >>

But onward and upward … it was time to return to Vancouver to board the M.S. Volendam for our cruise through Alaska’s Inside Passage. Having never cruised before I was looking forward to lazy days at sea followed by a relaxed evening enjoying dinner and a show, with maybe a movie thrown in for good measure.

The sights we encountered over the next seven days left me breathless and the shore excursions on offer really ignited our sense of adventure.

While we did take pleasure in this aspect of our time onboard, the sights we encountered over the next seven days left me breathless and the shore excursions on offer really ignited our sense of adventure. At each port of call – Juneau, Skagway and Ketchican – we headed off to enjoy a new experience … journeying by narrow-gauge railway through White Pass and Yukon Route; ‘flightseeing’ into the Misty Fjords National Monument; propping up the bar at the Red Onion Saloon; panning for gold at Liarsville. For me, the highlight of the entire 19 days was dog sledding in Juneau. This amazing adventure began with a 35-minute helicopter flight over the snow-capped mountains, flying so low you could almost reach out and touch them. After landing in a musher’s camp on the top of a glacier, we boarded a traditional dog-sled pulled by a team of very enthusiastic Alaskan huskies. The subsequent three-mile trek across the ice was one of the most exhilarating experiences I’ve ever had. The breathtaking sight of Glacier Bay National Park also rates highly on my most memorable moments. Towering rivers of ice, glistening above the mirror-like water … huge glaciers creaking and groaning before calving into the sea … the pure isolation of the bay itself … this was a truly magical day. The entire tour – from the time we boarded the coach in Vancouver to our disembarkation back in the same city – was quite simply amazing. While my words could never capture the majesty of the Rocky Mountains and the pure beauty of Alaska, the 2,000 odd photos I took along the way will always remind me of my time in the ‘magic mountains’.

TOP FIVE HIGHLIGHTS Here, in no particular order, are my top five highlights of the trip. Of course I didn’t get to experience every shore excursion or tour activity so I can only relate my own personal favourites: he Rocky Mountaineer – the food, the service, T the comfort, the scenery, everything about our two days on board was spectacular. Dog sledding in Juneau – a round trip by helicopter which included landing on the top of a glacier and traversing the snow by dog sled. Expensive but well worth it if you can afford it. V ictoria – you would need weeks to enjoy everything this beautiful city on Vancouver Island has to offer … The Butchart Gardens, whale watching, horse and carriage rides, high tea at the iconic Empress Hotel, the list is endless. Lake Louise – a must see for anyone visiting the Rockies. Explore the chateau, hike around the lake, take a side trip to the Blue River for a river safari or just sit and admire the majestic view. Glacier Bay – listening to the ice creak and groan is thrilling (and chilling), seeing huge chunks of it break off and smash into the water is awe-inspiring.

Ancient treasures Discover Jordan, a land of romance, myth and majesty.

The Monastery - Petra Words & photography keri thomas

We had walked for about two kilometres through the narrow serpentine canyon called the Siq. At times no more than a few metres wide, the Siq’s red sandstone walls tower above our heads allowing only narrow ribbon-like glimpses of the bright blue desert sky. Along its path, every few hundred metres, carved onto the sheer rock walls are tributes to the largely featureless gods of the Nabateans – the people who built Petra as their capital. These icons welcomed travellers along the Silk Route into secretive Petra. Following us all along

110

the serpentine Siq are the Nabatean’s handcarved channels, to preserve and direct their most precious asset – water. Our guide stops us. He turns us to face backwards towards a point high above the path we have walked – we can’t see what he points to. He moves us out from the shelter of the wall closer to the centre of the Siq. Still we see nothing, so he turns us around, and there for the first time we see the Treasury. A hundred or so metres ahead of us framed by a cleft in the Siq is the most photographed

part of this ancient city. It is something I had dreamed of seeing since I was a boy and it does not disappoint. Every step nearer we get, we see a little more until we exit the gorge into a wider clearing and the full majesty of this icon of the Rose Red City is revealed in all its beauty. The way you arrive into the city of Petra is a thrill in itself. You can almost imagine what the Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt may have felt when he ‘discovered’ it in 1812, having been lost to myth hundreds of years prior.

The Treasury - Petra

The Treasury is the best preserved of the hundreds of grandly carved rock tombs in Petra. It takes its name from 19th Century fortune hunters, who falsely believed it housed great treasures; they scarred it with bullet holes in their efforts to find them. My two teenage children and I survey the Treasury from every angle – it is hard to take your eyes from it. After some 30 minutes at its face, our guide moves us on. “There is so much more to see”, he says. “We have many more kilometres to walk”.

He was not wrong. This was our first day in Jordan’s most famous ancient city. For the next six hours we see countless tombs; we climb a mountain to the high point of sacrifice; we take in panoramic views of the 750 square kilometre city; walk down steep ravines past more signs of the sophisticated water courses, including an eroded fountain in the shape of a giant lion. We walk to a valley where few tourists tread where our feet literally walk over fragments of pottery made by the Nabateans and the civilisations that built on their legacy – the Greeks and the Romans. My

daughter is fascinated, picking up fragments of pots possibly thousands of years old. Nowhere, have I ever felt such a raw sense of history – where you feel like you are treading in the fresh tracks of civilisations past for the very first time. So vast is the city, only small areas have been fully excavated. Occasionally you come across an archeological dig in progress – where archeologists (who look nothing like Indiana Jones) sweat under the desert sun as they carefully brush away layers of sand with toothbrush-like implements. >>

111

The Forum - Jerash

Rock tombs at Petra

112

The following day we start early to catch the Treasury at dawn. Without crowds and in the red morning light it is even more stunning. Today we take the long climb up some 1,000 steps to the Monastery – the other great landmark of this city. This tomb is not dissimilar to the Treasury but at 50m high and 45m wide it dwarfs it in scale. Not far from the Monastery we walk to the ‘end of the world’ where a massive drop confronts us and we look towards the Mars-like landscape from what feels like a platform to the gods. Like so much of Jordan, Petra is a monument to the importance of this land to human history. This small and proud nation, about the size of Tasmania, has been at the crossroads of the silk route and the early spice route. Its landscape is woven into the tenets of almost every major religion and it holds many monuments that are global treasures. Places like the Hellenistic-Roman city, Umm Qais, in the country’s north-west. Perched on a hill with views to Syria, the Golan Heights and the Sea of Galilee in Israel, this was once the

Greek city of Gedara. The well-preserved, but hardly excavated, site features amphitheatres, fountains and colonnades hand-carved from the hard black basalt that still bear the chisel marks of the craftsmen that made them. About an hour south is the even more impressive city of Jerash – or Gerasa as it was known to the Romans. It is said to be amongst the best-preserved Roman cities in the world. Its most famous site is the magnificent oval shaped Forum lined by towering doric columns. From the Forum, the Cardo Maximus is a road of giant cobblestones lined with mosaics that lead to the Temple of Artemis. Here the massive columns seem to hold up the clouds. A further short walk and we enter the acoustically perfect amphitheatre where strangely a bagpipe band accompanies our entrance. We walk back through the city past the expansive hippodrome and under the ornately carved Arch of Hadrian. Jerash is about 90 minutes north of Jordan’s capital Amman (once known as Philadelphia) which is also home to a vast amphitheatre and

impressive Greco-Roman ruins of its own. Said to be built on seven hills like Rome, Amman is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world and is now undergoing a rapid burst of economic growth where traditional souks are neighboured by 5-star hotels. Jordan’s romance not only lies in its ancient cities but in its varying landscape which changes from rolling dunes in the east to the fertile olive groves of the Jordan valley. We head down from holy Mt Nebo, where Moses is reputed to have glimpsed the promised land, to the salt-saturated Dead Sea. Here at the lowest place on earth we eerily float like logs as large Russian tourists coat themselves on the shore with the supposedly curative Black-Brown mud. And then of course there is the most romantic landscape of all in this almost mythologised land – Wadi Rum. The place T.E. Lawrence (of Arabia) described as ‘vast, echoing and god-like’. Here monumental red sand-stone and granite pillars stand guard over golden dunes. Like almost everything in Jordan – Wadi Rum is unique, special and truly memorable.

The man & his music As singer and entertainer Rick Springfield embarks on his first solo Australian tour, Susan Lang-Lemckert reflects on his diverse career.

It was 1972, and though the ad was in blackand-white (we didn’t get colour television in Australia until 1975), it’s in colour in my memory. A lean and handsome young man came leaping through the long, rippling grass as some dulcet tones announced Beginnings – the debut album from Australian-born singer-songwriter Rick Springfield. Australian-born – this was exciting. We’d always had lots of home-grown musical talent, but up until then it’d been the likes of Athol Guy, who looked like someone’s dad; Normie Rowe, who looked like someone’s brother; and Johnny Farnham, who looked like someone’s neighbour. But Rick Springfield looked like a rock star. The rootsy, folksy tunes on that disc went round and round in my head for years after he’d disappeared to the US seeking fame, and we heard little of Rick Springfield for a while. But he wasn’t sitting around – while still writing and recording music, he took guest roles in prime-time US TV shows like Wonder Woman, The Rockford Files, Battlestar Galactica, The Hardy Boys and The Six Million Dollar Man. And he starred in the Saturday morning cartoon show Mission: Magic!, with each episode featuring an original Rick Springfield track. Through early OzRock shows like Hit Scene and GTK I learned he’d been in the seminal Oz band Zoot, who’d done a dark and grungy version of Eleanor Rigby that even critics had liked, and whose alumni enjoyed later success with Little River Band, The Ferretts, and Cotton, Lloyd & Christian. But Rick was nowhere. Then suddenly he was everywhere. The hard yards he’d put into small parts on TV paid off with a regular role as the smouldering Dr Noah Drake in the long-running megasoap General Hospital, which introduced Rick to a whole new audience. But he hadn’t forgotten the old one, and the hard yards he’d put in there paid off, too, with the release of the 1981 album Working Class Dog, which featured his biggest-ever hit Jessie’s

Girl and earned him the 1981 Grammy Award for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance. More albums followed, and the feature film Hard to Hold – which he not only starred in, but wrote the soundtrack to. Then Broadway beckoned, and Rick became one of the original cast members of Smokey Joe’s Cafe, the Tony Award-nominated musical featuring the songs of Jerry Lieber and Mike Stoller. It was a full life, to say the least. Though he’d lived in the US for many years, Australia was still special to Rick. He’d visit, and even married his wife Barbara at his parents’ church in Sydney. Then in 2007 he headlined one of the most-anticipated concert tours in Australian history – the Countdown Spectacular 2 – and audiences fell for Rick Springfield all over again. Here was a man who had it all – fame, success, creative freedom and a loving family. But no fairy tale is perfect, and for Rick, the spectre of depression that had haunted him since adolescence was never far away. His ultimately successful – if ongoing – battle with the black dog was poignantly and evocatively documented in the 2010 best seller Late, Late at Night: a Memoir, which traced his remarkable life from South Wentworthville to Los Angeles, and everywhere in between. After flying out of the bookstores and gracing The New York Times best seller list, this tome was also listed as one of Rolling Stone magazine’s 25 Great Rock Memoirs of All Time. So what’s left to do when you’ve already done so much – write a novel? Well, funny you should say that. Magnificent Vibration, Rick’s first novel, recently hit the shelves and is already a runaway success. And the solo tour we’ve been dreaming of for so long will soon be a reality when Rick treats Australian audiences to a series of live shows in intimate venues around the country in October. ‘I am and will always be an Aussie,’ he recently said. ‘My best memories of my early career are

all centred around Australia. It will forever be my home. I can’t believe I have never done a full tour in Oz as a solo performer.’ We can only wonder what’ll be next, though one thing’s for sure – it’ll be interesting. And perhaps yet another beginning. did you know? ick was born Richard Lewis Springthorpe in R the Sydney suburb of South Wentworthville. One of Rick’s bandmates in the uber-talented Zoot was Beeb Birtles, who went on to form the nucleus of Little River Band with Graeham Goble and Glen Shorrock. As well as the fretwork and vocals he’s famous for, Rick also plays keyboards and banjo. Rick had a 1985 hit with a cover of State of the Heart, an earlier hit for fellow Australians Mondo Rock. Patti Hansen – also known as Mrs Keith Richards – played Rick’s ex-girlfriend in the 1984 film Hard to Hold. While still dreaming of international success, Rick saw some clouds shaped like the USA in the night sky, and took it as a sign. Soon after he travelled to the US to follow his dream. Rick has taken a couple of starring stints on General Hospital – during the first of these (1981-1983) his co-stars included a young Demi Moore. ick has penned two best-selling books – his R autobiography Late, Late at Night: a Memoir, and the novel Magnificent Vibration. Rick was recently honoured with a star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame.

Inner strength Patsy Rowe interviews Sonia St Claire, author of a poignant new book The Girl in the Locker. What made you decide to write a book about your experiences? I felt it was time to end the silence about what really went on in orphanages. I also wanted to tell my story to inspire others. It doesn’t matter what happens to you in life, you can overcome adversity and forge some kind of happiness and positive life for yourself. I want people to be inspired by my story, not get caught up in the tragedy and sadness of it, which might help them to perhaps find some kind of healing and peace for themselves, and to realise they can live in a world without abuse. Did it bring back all the memories you’ve been trying to forget? Yes, when I started writing my story, the memories came flooding back. But I’m in a good place now where I can write about it and talk about it. Once upon a time that wasn’t the case. I suffered traumatic amnesia for the first 41 years of my life. I just couldn’t cope with the memories at all. What kept me on this earth; was my children. I lived for them. My memories will go to my grave with me. They are in my DNA, but I don’t want them to stop me having a life for myself, or finding some kind of love and happiness. I just learned to deal with them by having therapy and reading books on personal development and my books taught me what I should have learnt as a child. One favourite that stood out was The Road Less Travelled by Scott Peck. Life is too short to stay stuck in it otherwise your tormentors and perpetrators still own you. I have found peace and healing through love, gratitude and forgiveness. Do you think it has helped you to deal with some of those awful times, or has it brought them to the surface again? It has helped me greatly to deal with my memories. To get them up and out and not let them fester inside of me and create havoc with my body, mind and spirit. I am still suffering physical pain. Being beaten over and over for all those years has taken its toll on my flesh, my muscles and my bones, as well as my emotional state. I will never be the person I was supposed to be. I just try and live the best life that I was given. Life is very precious, my dream is to live a useful life and help others through my experiences.

What are your feelings towards your mother? My poor darling mother was the youngest of 10 children born back in 1911. Times were hard. Her older siblings always told her she was not wanted and that she was in the way. Her father was born in Madrid, Spain, and died when she was two-years-old. He was apparently the only soft place to fall. Her mother was half German. She ruled the house and the children with an iron fist and had no mercy for any of her children. I don’t think my mother had the capacity to love anyone after her childhood, not even herself. I think that’s why she couldn’t love us. She never knew love, only violence, rejection and suffering. I never held any disdain or angst toward her. Somehow I understood her, when no one else did. I chased my mother all my life for her approval, her love, but it was never forthcoming. I gave and gave till I had nothing left to give. Then at the age of 41 I gave up. I just couldn’t do it anymore. But I do know deep down in her own way; she loved me, but she had no idea how to show it. She was filled with tragedy and sadness too. She never told me that she loved me in my entire life. I always told her though; ‘Mama, I love you’. I never hated her. Hate is a word that is not in my vocabulary. I don’t like the word, I never use it. Why do you think your mother put you into an orphanage? The reason mum gave us up was she said she couldn’t cope with twin girls and we could stay there ‘till she got her life on track’. I think her rare visits to see us were more for show and to impress the welfare that she was keeping in touch with us. We always hoped that one day she’d take us home. Even our holidays were in foster care, not at home with mum and the other kids. She never did get us out of the orphanages, until welfare made her take us out 14 years later. Do you think being flung out into the world at 14 with absolutely no preparation whatsoever for what to expect, was partly responsible for you marrying so young? I lived with a man for three years at aged 17 - 20, I never married him. I was terrified of life on my own and that was the reason I moved in with him. I was used to following the nun’s instructions for every single minute of my day and I had no idea how to make decisions for myself, let alone

live in the world on my own. My first night alone was at 17 when Mum and her boyfriend threw me out of their house when I couldn’t sleep and tossed and turned all night. It was because the light was still on. The nuns had always turned the lights off, and I had to learn to do it for myself. I was socially inept and emotionally flawed. Did your own lack of love and affection as a child affect the way you treated your first baby? I had no idea how to raise a child or show her any love. I was devoid of all feeling. I was institutionalised and numb to the core. I made terrible mistakes and wish I could take it all back, but that’s impossible. I didn’t know you were supposed to love them. I didn’t know you were supposed to put your arms around them and tell them you love them. It was all so foreign to me. I did better when I knew better.

LEO 24 Jul – 23 Aug You need a distraction! Someone will come along with the perfect idea or adventure just as you are in the midst of a project or task that is becoming tedious. Do not be afraid to put the project aside and enjoy the moment. A break will bring you back with renewed energy and focus. If you are a creative person or in a creative industry then you will find you dream up some quite amazing ideas that need to be explored. The right people at the right time will be delighted with what you have to offer them. You pull off quite a coup and your bank account looks very good indeed.

SAGITTARIUS 23 Nov – 22 Dec

ARIES 21 Mar – 20 Apr

A gift is not about price tag but about making the effort to choose something that is going to really please the person you are buying for. You will get them what they want and they will thank you for it. While you are in the giving mood there will be a charity or cause that will capture your imagination. Of course you will feel great for helping out; more importantly you will make a difference.

You are in the unenviable position where you are able to respond to any given situation and come out on top! You may need a little guidance early in the piece with legalities and rules/regulations, just to make sure you are on track. On a romantic note, someone is paying a great deal of attention to you; if you are single you might be flattered; if partnered it could be downright annoying.

VIRGO 24 Aug – 23 Sept

CAPRICORN 23 Dec – 20 Jan

TAURUS 21 Apr – 21 May

Try and avoid anything to do with money and finances and do something creative instead. There is a tendency for mistakes to be made and things to not add up. If you have to deal with finances on a large scale get someone you trust to check the figures, that way you will have peace of mind. Keeping to the basics is also a good move – eat, work, play, sleep.

Don’t wait for things to happen, make them happen, and make it happen now! Someone may have promised you an opportunity but they have not come through. Pull in some favours, and be seen out and about. You will find that doing it for yourself was far more successful; and the other person may be wishing they had taken you on board after all.

Emotionally you are vulnerable, and it would not take much to tip you over the edge into anger or tears. The wonderful thing about being a Taurus is that you can take a deep breath, look at things logically, and move forward. Just remember some things are beyond your control. Walking away does not mean failure, it means you are smart enough to know what will not work.

LIBRA 24 Sept – 23 Oct

AQUARIUS 21 Jan – 19 Feb

GEMINI 22 May – 21 Jun

You will be asked to talk to someone about their performance or behaviour. Not the nicest thing to have to do, but you will be able to distance yourself from the emotions of it because it is for their own good. If you are taking part in any kind of competition you need to up your game. Also, watch your diet as there is something that may upset your digestion. It is very mild, but still inconvenient.

It is important that you keep records of everything, there is going to be a situation where someone challenges their interaction with you. They are trying to push the envelope and they will fail miserably because you are prepared. Your off the wall sense of humour could get you into trouble, not everyone quite understands how you see the world, and a moment of black humour could be awkward.

You know how sometimes there is always someone who seems to be the hero, who is always in the right place at the right time? They are so annoying! You will have to deal with someone like that and you will not be welcoming them with open arms the way everyone else is. However, their shortcomings will be exposed and everyone will see that they are not quite so wonderful after all.

SCORPIO 24 Oct – 22 Nov

PISCES 20 Feb – 20 Mar

CANCER 22 Jun – 23 Jul

If you have to relay a message do it in writing! Your written skills are far better at this point in time than your oral skills. Also putting things in writing and keeping a copy gives you peace of mind. This also goes for legal documents – make sure you have copies of house titles and insurance policies. Not that anything untoward is going to happen but sometimes you need those papers in a hurry.

You will feel as if you are the only sane person in your circle of friends and family. While you are being careful with finances and resources; others seem to be spending up large and taking risks. There will be a couple of moments of ‘I told you so’ and don’t be afraid to say it. When they are still stuck in the same place and you are cruising the Med, the message will hit home.

If you are not careful you could miss some outstanding opportunities simply because you were not paying attention. There is a tendency to be side tracked by love and emotional tangles. Try to put the romantic stuff aside for a few weeks. A weekend break towards the end of this time would be a boost, but keep it low key and restful rather than full on and social.

cover story

Candid camera Behind the scenes of our latest Cove cover shoot.

While shooting a cover may sound glamourous, in actual fact it is quite a challenge to bring together the myriad of details that need to be considered … models, photographer, locations, looks, etc. Thankfully on our latest shoot everything went to plan and we are incredibly pleased with the finished product. The star of the show was undoubtedly the gorgeous Cartier Panthère White Gold Bangle that graces Linette’s wrist. We would like to say a huge thank you to Michael Elek from Cartier Surfers Paradise who gave up his Saturday morning (and bought the coffees) so that we could feature this incredible piece on our cover.
