EXHILARATION. It is said that anticipation alone is enough to create a sense of exhilaration. As your ďŹ nger hovers over the start button of a McLaren Sports Series model, the anticipation is palpable. From the ďŹ rst growl of its twin turbo charged 3.8 litre V8, the experience surpasses expectations. Even if you take for granted the 0-124mph time of a scarcely believable 9.5 seconds for the 570S, nothing prepares you for the thrill of its race-bred dynamics. With a chassis honed to create an unrivalled balance, the Sports Series is as at home in the city as it is on the limits of the race track.

We have included a selection of content from all around the world in this special Boat Show edition.
Editor’s letter EVERY YEAR the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show attracts thousands of international visitors to the region. To make them feel at home we have included a selection of content from all around the world in this special Boat Show edition. For example, we visit Cartier’s Parisian workshops, take a tour of London’s outdoor art gallery and showcase the gorgeous new collection from U.S. fashion designer Vera Wang. I also sat down on a beach in Fiji to chat to French-born, Australian celebrity chef Jacques Reymond … how is that for an international flavour? Of course we have plenty of stories from closer to home as well. Henrietta has gone undercover to reveal the secret world of men’s bespoke tailoring in Brisbane, Tony travels a little further afield to review a new wine label from the Barossa Valley and I take a look behind the gates at Sanctuary Cove, where Gallery Homes are making their mark. We also showcase the new Jewel development planned for Surfers Paradise, preview the line-up for this year’s Noosa Long Weekend Festival and share a delicious recipe from room81 in Broadbeach.
And what would a boat show edition be without boats? Our cover shot was taken at Sanctuary Cove Marina on board the stunning Horizon PC52 Catamaran. Horizon also feature in our On the Water section where we have a sneak peak at their sleek and stylish new E56 XO and bring you a comprehensive 6-page guide to the 2016 Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show which runs from 19 - 22 May. If fast cars are more your thing, don’t miss Chris’s story on the new McLaren Sports Series … these high performance vehicles have definite ‘street cred’. Meanwhile, golfers will be tempted by our latest competition which gives one reader the chance to win 18 holes of golf for eight people at The Palms golf course. I think that just about covers something for everyone … enjoy the boat show and enjoy the magazine.

Meet the mascot
With just under two years to go until the Opening Ceremony on 4 April 2018, a loveable koala with fur the colour of the ocean and a passion for surfing and adventure has been revealed as the mascot for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games™. Borobi will play a key role in welcoming the athletes of the world and bringing to life the true spirit of the Games. “This mascot will bring just the right enthusiasm, fun and energy our city is renowned for and will be part of the lasting legacy of what is shaping to be a great Games,” said Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate. “Borobi will be as memorable to our children as Matilda was to those who enjoyed Brisbane in 1982.’’

Vera Wang Bride Exquisite details, intricate draping and a nonchalant sense of style characterise the Vera Wang aesthetic.

BORN AND RAISED IN NEW YORK CITY, Vera Ellen Wang began figure skating at the age of eight. Along with her pairs partner James Stuart, she competed at the 1968 U.S. Figure Skating Championships, however, when she failed to make the U.S. Olympic team she decided to enter the fashion industry. Since then, Vera has created a unique aspirational world that alludes to sensuality and youthful sophistication. As a native New Yorker, she understands women who embrace fashion. “I am inspired by women,” she admits. “My earliest fashion inspiration was my mother, a woman with impeccable style. There’s no question that she was very influential to me. “I inherited her curiosity, her desire to learn. I’m in this business because I want to bring a sense of style and modernity to what women wear.” By age 23, Vera was the youngest ever Vogue fashion editor and stylist where she remained for 16 years before moving to Ralph Lauren as a design director. In 1990, she opened her first flagship store on Manhattan’s famed Madison Avenue, introducing fashion to the bridal industry with revolutionary designs and refined detailing. “I see myself as a true modernist,” she says. “Even when I do a traditional gown, I give it a modern twist. I work with structure, with techniques, but I go outside the box and give it my own spin.” >>

In addition to wedding gowns, Vera has expanded her collections to include ready-towear, footwear, eyewear, fragrance, flowers, china and crystal, silver and gifts, bedding and fine papers. In 2005 the Council of Fashion Designers of America awarded Vera ‘Womenswear Designer of the Year’ and she further established herself as a style authority in 2007 by sharing her modern sensibility with millions of American women through her Simply Vera Vera Wang line. Vera’s new Fall 2016 bridal collection continues to set the benchmark in fashion. Titled Hotel Madrid Part Two, it picks up where her Spring line left off, in the Spain of flamenco dancers. But in place of last season’s streamlined styles, the new collection is a study in form. Silhouettes vary from the conventional – a long-sleeved shirtdress style with handappliquéd lace – to the subversive, in the form of a princess dress with a sheer bodice sitting atop layer upon layer of gossamer-thin tulle. The ethos of the collection is clear: Vera Wang wants her bride to feel sexy and sensual, with hints of the exotic.
30
Every style comes with detachable bows, and clever black corsets act as a subtle nod to the costumes sported by toreadors. There are more traditional takes on dressing for the big day, including hand embroidery with pearl accents and an ostrich feather-trimmed skirt. But it is her one colour option, in black, that truly captures the joie de vivre of Madrid with a flower-lined bubble hem. So who is the ideal Vera Wang bride? “I think she is someone who is fearless. If you’re true to yourself, then you are my ideal client. A woman who wears Vera Wang is sensual yet spirited; confident yet whimsical; easy going but fashion conscious,” Vera says. “When you choose a dress, make sure it is really who you are. If you normally dress conservatively, your wedding is not the time to try something risqué. You want to be comfortable in your appearance.” Vera Wang says there is a very simple philosophy behind her designs. “I think on a wedding day, every woman is a celebrity to her public,” she says. “That’s why we devote so much care and effort towards creating these clothes.”
2016 VERA WANG BRIDAL COLLECTION TRUNK SHOWS Vera Wang Bride will be hosting the Fall 2016 Bridal Collection Trunk Shows at the InterContinental Sanctuary Cove Resort from 23 – 26 June. D iscover the lure of Spain in the ‘Hotel Madrid Collection’. During these dedicated days brides can enjoy a special incentive on all Fall 2016 Bridal Collections. By Appointment only from 10am - 7pm during these dedicated days. Places are limited. Call Vera Wang Bride Sydney on +61 2 9252 6186 or email verawang@ytd.com.au to schedule your appointment.

A gentleman’s secret Uncovering the private world of bespoke clothiers and tailors in Brisbane. WORDS HENRIETTA DUPS
UPON THE RECOMMENDATION of my motherin-law, I recently found myself reading a fascinating sartorial journey entitled The Coat Route – Craft, Luxury & Obsession on the Trail of a $50,000 Coat by US travel writer Meg Lukens Noonan. Noonan craftily stitches together an enthralling story of the bespoke coat’s provenance, starting with talented Sydney-based fourth-generation (Saville Row trained) tailor, John H.Cutler, wielding his scissors, needle and thread on a navy overcoat-length bolt of the finest pure Dormeuil Vicuna worth $6,000 a yard. Rarer than the finest cashmere, the near extinct Vicuna, found on a reserve on a mountainside in the Andes, can only be shorn every three years. The liquid silk lining is contributed by the world’s greatest silk designer Stefano Ricci who gives Noonan a taste of his uber luxurious

Florentine lifestyle – including fast vintage cars, collectables from exotic travels and a lavish dinner party in a 15th Century villa. Then it was on to James Grove & Sons (established 1857) in England’s West Midlands where the Indian buffalo horn buttons were hand carved. The final product was a discreet yet elegant navy ‘slow’ coat, months in the making, which Cutler had created for his longtime client as the ‘ultimate expression of luxury’. The coat fitted its owner perfectly, in fact it was so good he promptly ordered a second one. This got me thinking, in today’s fast fashion environment is there a market for bespoke handcrafted attire? Surprisingly, the answer is a resounding yes – bespoke is flourishing in Australia.
So I decided to investigate the prominence of this discreet trade in sunny Brisbane. I met up with Louis Ialenti, co-owner of The Cloakroom, located at Level 1, 215 Elizabeth St. Founded in 2007, this immensely private and by appointment only boutique destination offers gentleman a complete bespoke experience. A client of The Cloakroom has everything from cocktails to an in house barber at his disposal, while two consultants are on hand to consciously understand the individual’s sartorial needs. The Cloakroom’s style mantra is ‘sharp, elegant and powerful’, and they never pressure for time or a sale, believing good business to be education and service. Louis says that they try to uniquely use fabric from the six generation French textile company, Dormeuil, as it is the very best in the world.

Their suiting is made in partnership with one of Japan’s elite tailoring houses, Takizawa Shigeru. Their shirts are sourced from Germany using only Thomas Mason Cotton and their shoes are made exclusively by Stefano Bemer in Florence, Italy. Plus they have a small team of tailors in Hong Kong who hand make their Made to Measure Jeans. Obviously, with such exclusivity comes a weighty price tag, however Louis generously educates me on this point.

Aung Lynn
I then strolled over to the exclusive luxury menswear boutique Mitchell Ogilvie on Edward Street where I caught up with my dear friend, Director Aung Lynn. Finding that the Brisbane fashion market was lacking in high-end menswear, Mitchell Ogilvie founded his eponymous boutique in 1981, and has enjoyed wide success since. A grand boutique set over two floors, with immaculate oak wood parquetry and a private cocktail bar in the basement, everything is designed for the customers’ comfort. Mitchell and Aung fly to Italy bi-annually where they personally select and curate a quality collection from exclusive labels including Brunello Cucinelli and Canali. Although the items are pret-a-porter, Mitchell Ogilvie offer a bespoke personal styling service to their clients; often during these buying trips they will source individual items with a specific client in mind. They also provide individual alterations of all garments to ensure a perfect fit. Aung maintains that they never sell anything to their customers, but rather focus on building relationships, discovering their individual sartorial needs and then providing an array of solutions. “Quite often, men don’t like shopping, therefore they love it when we make the experience easy for them. They like us to show them complete outfits, so when they get home they don’t have to think about how to put the look together,” Aung says. “We have customers that always take photos of the outfits we style for them, so they can remember how to wear it when getting dressed at home.” Finally, for the gentleman that need to pack a real style punch in every situation, I turned to Brisbane clothier Leif Lyons, a personal
40
self-branding and image consultant for the corporate man. I am curious as to the difference between a clothier and a stylist. According to Leif, a clothier’s skills and duties go beyond the bounds of where a stylist’s duties end. With over 12 years’ experience working with some of the best national and international luxury menswear brands – including Hugo boss, Brooks Brothers, Ermengildo Zegna, Tom Ford, and The Cloakroom. Leif’s intricate knowledge of men’s suiting, skills with made-to-measure tailoring, understanding of the history and functionality of men’s attire, and a detailed eye for the sartorial arts, allow him to provide a more extensive service than that of a stylist. Leif’s business focuses on the time-poor corporate executive gentleman where image is essential. His services include wardrobe assessment, styling and organising, shopping, events dressing, look building, and finally, an alterations service for existing suits. He educates his clients on dressing to suit their body shape and personality. As Leif is not tied to one particular shop or brand, he can suit each individual client from his favourite menswear boutiques in Brisbane including Ermenegildo Zegna, The Cloakroom, Mitchell Ogilvie, and Richards and Richards. During my conversations with Brisbane’s style savvy gents I garnered a few tips and tricks, including Louis Ialenti’s Four Sartorial Rules for Gentleman. 1. Business should always be blue, grey or French navy with patterns or textures, but never black. A three-piece suit is a very strong addition to certain meetings and business functions.
2. Semi casual is the most complex look to do well, as there are so many possibilities. I always suggest layering with either the pants, shirt or jacket being the ‘centrepiece’. 3. Cocktail dress is where men have the most scope to try patterns and checks, and whereby the jacket can be used as a blazer moving forward. 4. Formal – a navy or black tux, every man needs one. Meanwhile Aung informed me that the essential pieces to be packed if travelling to the Continent this season are… “A beautiful deconstructed Brunello Cucinelli jacket with a cashmere/silk knit and handmade Jacob Cohen jeans are a must. He needs to look effortlessly chic to fit in with the Europeans.” To conclude, let’s refer to the wise words of designer Hardy Amies; “A man should look as if he has bought his clothes with intelligence, put them on with care, and then forgotten all about them.”

Diamonds at heart For over 160 years, the Cartier diamond has been an expression of pure audacity, refinement, attachment, emotion or exaltation. 1
TRINITY RUBAN, Galanterie de Cartier, Diamants Légers, wedding bands and solitaires … Each Cartier diamond creation carries with it a story, expressed in an instant, to reveal and intensify the most precious of memories. At 13 rue de la Paix in Paris, the Cartier workshops resemble a succession of high precision laboratories: a lair of tiny brushes, mandrels, bezel blocks and miniature milling machines, where masks and binoculars live alongside gravers and tongs of all sizes. “We direct the scenario of diamonds,” explains Xavier Gargat, Director of the workshops. “Our profession consists of creating the structure, translating the volumes.” Today, 130 people are employed at the heart of these workshops with 40 jewellery craftsmen working in the restricted High Jewellery section. There is even a workshop reserved for solitaires where five jewellers in white coats toil at their workbenches in religious silence. At least ten years’ experience is required to be able to work on a High Jewellery piece, which can require up to 3,000 manhours. These often-unique pieces demand sound mastery of techniques, with all shapes being hand-crafted. Although traditional tools are tending to disappear while other, more modern tools are

emerging, the art of jewellery still requires the same patience and dexterity. At times, the sun of the diamond can be fickle and its brilliance must be diminished with a stamp of talc in order to proceed with the setting. When the metal is at last reached, it is tirelessly polished with cotton or goose feathers … this perfect finish therefore becomes the Cartier signature. Scarcely visible metal prongs on a row of diamonds for greater comfort and softness on the skin, a mount raised to illuminate the stone from within and enhance its sparkle … a Cartier jewel forms a sumptuous, natural link between the diamond and the skin. A virtuoso of the millegrain setting, as well as the lily-of-the-valley setting, and a pioneer of the baguette cut, Cartier transcends genres, eras and styles. There is never a question of imitating life, but rather revealing it in all its strength and vivacity, by multiplying illusion and perspective, making a panther appear ready to pounce, a bracelet seem more supple than a ribbon. At Cartier, the diamond merits extremely close attention, requiring the presence of six ‘hunters’ for stones of less than six carats, and six more for High Jewellery gems. Having been declared suitable for the remit and the 4Cs rule – colour,
cut, carat and clarity – each stone is evaluated by a team of thirteen other experts. Finally, the diamonds that have been retained are examined once more before they can be considered worthy of being set by Cartier. Most of the world’s largest diamonds have travelled through the distinguished workshops at 13 rue de la Paix. In 2002, Cartier acquired the world-famous Star of the South, a 128.48-carat stone mounted along with the English Dresden diamond – a pure pear-shaped gemstone of 78.53 carats – on a diamond necklace that was to remain in the collection of the Gaekwar of Baroda for around eighty years. The gemstone has been completely reborn on a dazzling bracelet created by Cartier. The quality of certain gems such as the Cartier Tiger Tears diamonds – 56.64 carats and 57.63 carats respectively – gives them extraordinary presence, remarkable for their clarity, their absolute ’water’. At Cartier, the diamond saga thrives on encounters with rare personalities such as soldier and patron Major Alfred Ernest Allnatt, owner of Rubens’ Adoration of the Magi, who entrusted a 102.07-carat cushion-shaped diamond, which was set in a brooch with a floral motif, to Cartier in 1952.
3
Is your image important to you? 4
The faceted wonder of the diamond is also linked to grand gestures and historic moments (Queen Elizabeth wore the Williamson diamond to the wedding of the Prince of Wales in 1981) and extravagances that justify the greatest of challenges. In 1928, Cartier created a ceremonial necklace with 2,930 diamonds for the Maharaja Sir Bhupindar Singh of Patiala, with a total weight of around 1,000 carats. In 1956 Prince Rainier III proposed to actress Grace Kelly with an emerald cut diamond from Cartier weighing 10.48 carats. The young princess never wanted to take her ring off, insisting on wearing it in the film High Society by Charles Walters: it was to be her last appearance on screen. In 1969, Richard Burton purchased the rare 69.42-carat stone, which would later be known as the Cartier-Burton-Taylor diamond. The diamond was mounted in a pendant on the request of Elizabeth Taylor. Cartier accepted, on condition that the stone would be exhibited in the windows of the 5th Avenue boutique in New York for several days. Thousands of visitors flocked to see it. ‘Ned’, she said to her husband, ‘it’s got me!’ Evalyn Walsh McLean, daughter of the gold prospector Thomas F. Walsh and wife of the Washington Post heir, was of course referring to the fabulous Star of the East diamond: a pear-shaped Indian treasure of 94.80 carats hanging from a diamond necklace presented to her by Cartier. It was also Evalyn Walsh McLean who purchased the Hope diamond in around 1910. The extremely rich American client was seen wearing the necklace whose brilliance inspired these legendary words: ‘For hours that jewel stared at me, and at some time during the night I began to really want the thing ...’

Carbon’d calf The team at room81 have created this deliciously different degustation dish.
Veal striploin, carrot, ketchup and cardamom
Serves 4
VEAL STRIPLOIN Ingredients 500g veal striploin 5g squid ink 50ml milk Method 1. Trim all the sinew and fat, if any, off the veal loin. 2. Roll tightly in cling film so you will have a perfectly round shaped veal loin. 3. Cut into 100g portions and place into a vac pac bag. 4. Mix the milk and squid ink together to form a black liquid then pour into the bags with the veal. 5. Cook in circulator at 62ºC for 25 minutes. Once cooked take the veal striploin out of the bag and discard the liquid. 6. Let the veal sit at warm temperature to rest. This allows time for the black coating on the veal to dry and create a charcoal looking effect. CARROT JERKY (to be prepared 4 days in advance) Ingredients 2 bunches of baby Dutch carrots 2 litres water 50g calcium hydroxide 100g granulated sugar 100g brown sugar 200g sea salt 1 head of garlic 100g fresh ginger 10g cracked black pepper Method: 1. Mix the water and calcium hydroxide to create a solution. 2. Peel baby carrots and soak in the liquid for 3 hours. 3. Add all dry ingredients together and crush in a mortar and pestle. 4. After 3 hours take the carrots out of the water mixture and pat dry. Transfer to a vac pac bag and add your curing mixture making sure all carrots are fully coated. 5. Seal bag in cryovac machine making sure there is no air left in the bag. Set aside in the fridge for 3 days. 6. On the fourth day take your carrots from the bag and wash off cure mixture under cold water.

7. Place in a vac pac bag and cook in boiling water for 5 minutes, refresh in iced cold water. 8. O nce the carrots are chilled place on a dehydrator tray and dehydrate for 1 hour at 62ºC then turn carrots over and dehydrate for a further 30 minutes. CARROT KETCHUP Ingredients 1 litre carrot juice 8g agar agar 2g cardomon 1. Bring the carrot juice, agar agar and cardamom to the boil and whisk for 2 minutes until the agar agar has dissolved. 2. Pass through fine chinos and set in a metal tray. 3. Once the mixture has set solid in the fridge transfer to a blender and blend on high until you have a smooth ketchup-like texture. 4. Transfer mixture into a squeeze bottle until needed.
THYME POWDER Ingredients 10 sprigs thyme 10g maltodextrin Method 1. Dehydrate thyme at 60ºC for 30 minutes. 2. Pick the thyme leaves off and crush in a mortar and pestle with the maltodextrin until you have an ash like powder. TO ASSEMBLE 1. Dust plate with the ash. 2. Place carrots on the plate. 3. Pipe carrot ketchup on making big and small dots. 4. Place veal on plate and serve.

SAM MOORE, ROOM81 CHEF DE CUISINE ROOM81 Chef de Cuisine, Sam Moore, has been working in professional kitchens for 12 years. Born and raised in Scotland, Sam was intrigued by food and cooking from a young age. His first professional job was working in his Dad’s restaurant when he was 14. At the age of 17 Sam won Scottish Borders Junior Chef of the Year and has since brought his talent across to Australia, working in great restaurants such as Pier Restaurant in Sydney and No35 in Melbourne. Under his guidance, room81 at Sofitel Gold Coast Broadbeach has recently been awarded its second Chef’s Hat by the Australian Good Food Guide (AGFG). This means room81 now sits in the top echelon of ‘Hatted’ Gold Coast restaurants, with only three other restaurants in the region holding Two Hats. The AGFG accolade is a realisation of an ambitious vision conceived over 18 months ago when Chef Sam dared his team to raise the bar and strive for excellence. Against the judgement of many he decided to introduce a degustation menu to the restaurant to allow for more creative possibilities and allow guests to truly sample some innovative dishes. His next goal: to achieve 3 Hats before he reaches 30 years of age.

IT’S ONE OF THE MORE SURREAL moments of my journalistic career … I’m sitting on a tropical island, my bare feet buried in the sand, and next to me is revered restaurateur and celebrity chef, Jacques Reymond. We are discussing his role as Turtle Island’s Food Director, a position he has held at this luxury Fijian resort for the past 24 years. “My relationship with Turtle Island began in February 1992,” Jacques recalls. “The owner, Richard Evanson, had heard about me in Australia and he approached me to do a one week guest chef appearance. This is not something I really like to do so I said to him ‘if you want me to be involved with the island I’d rather have a commitment for one year and after that you can tell me if it has been worth it or not’. “I’ve now visited the resort around 120 times and I’m responsible for all the food … I set the menus, I train the staff, I hire the staff and my wife Kathy and I look after the wines as well.” While Jacques is arguably one of Australia’s most influential chefs, the staff on Turtle Island refer to him simply as ‘Papa’. This is no sign of disrespect to the man with an impressive 80 Hats to his name but rather a

reflection of the close bond he has forged with the local community. “It is an enormous pleasure to be with the Fijians and to give them a chance in life by training them to be a member of the hospitality industry, not just in the kitchen, but as barmen, in front of house, or in the warehouse,” Jacques says. “I usually choose the staff from the four villages you can see from here. Because they are locals, they don’t miss the mainland, they can visit their family, and I know they are going to be reliable. These three factors are very important. The rest, as long as they are willing to learn and they are willing to work, I can teach them.” Over the years Jacques has seen many changes and says that, from a culinary point of view especially, the resort has really come of age. “When we started it was a long way from where it is today. We didn’t have a proper kitchen, we cooked mostly on half drums and all we produced was pizza, sandwiches and curries.” Nowadays, while those half drums still make an appearance (I enjoyed a very memorable mountain-top dinner, savouring food cooked on this most basic piece of equipment), Jacques has developed an inventive menu that pays homage
to both the Fijian culture and local produce … fusing them together in a style he describes as Pacific-fresh. “My vision of food on the island is to respect where we are,” he says. “We take into consideration the future of the community, we use exclusively local produce, and we always listen to what the women in the village do in terms of cooking. “The menu has to be feasible as well. It’s no use trying to do Jacques Reymond restaurant food here because we don’t physically have the equipment or the product so we have to work with what we have.” According to Jacques, sustainability is another important factor to consider. “We are very conservative in our environment,” he says. “We have a six-acre garden with six fulltime gardeners and we are very self-sufficient with all of the vegetables and most of the fruits. “It is incredible the array of crops we have. Different kinds of beans, zucchini, capsicum, eggplants, pumpkin, and all the herbs, it is a very big asset. “The gardeners bring the freshly-picked produce around in wheelbarrows at 10 o’clock

in the morning and say ‘this is what you can use today’, so the chefs have to think on their feet. “We compose all the main components and then the garnishes depend on what we have in the garden.” Naturally, seafood also features prominently on the menu. “Our fishermen come from the local villages so if I want crabs or octopus I can ask, and we can rotate our fish on a daily basis depending on what is available.” During my stay on the island I experienced Jacques’ Pacific-fresh flavours in a number of different settings, from a traditional Fijian feast to a nine-course Thanksgiving dinner; from a romantic private dineout to the aforementioned mountain-top dinner; from a sumptuous wedding breakfast to a casual beachside picnic. All the meals were exceptional and I wondered how they consistently achieve such high standards given the remote location and limited resources. The secret, Jacques says, is to keep it simple. “I use what I have, what I like and what I know … and it works.”

WINE CELLAR
Father/son focus Winemakers Dave and Callum Powell are creating some exceptional new vintages under their Powell and Son label. WORDS TONY HARPER
THE 2013 PARTING of ways between Dave Powell and Torbreck – the company he founded way back in 1994 – was like a bad Hollywood divorce, fuelled by disagreement, brimming with vitriol and attracting plenty of public attention. But life is a succession of ebbs and flows and it has a knack of throwing up diamonds when you least expect them. Right now Dave Powell looks happier, leaner and healthier than he has for decades, working alongside his son in his new creation, Powell and Son. The Torbreck story is a tumultuous one and makes an interesting read. Twice it went to the brink of non-existence and twice it was pulled back from the edge, all the while plotting its way to become one of the most important red wine brands in the country. Dave fought hard to keep the dream alive and he succeeded, but now it continues without him. The politics and details can be found online and I have no intention of airing them here: this is about the newborn business. Callum, now 22, is the ‘Son’ part of the puzzle. He spent time at J.L. Chave in France’s Rhone Valley, so he knows a thing or two about shiraz. Torbreck was founded on Dave’s fascination with the many old (and often derelict) vineyards that dotted the Barossa and Eden Valleys.
66
For Powell and Son the philosophy hasn’t changed: oldvineyards managed and nurtured by the father and son team, their resultant wines bottled with the aim of capturing their unique place in the Australian landscape. The prize vineyard belongs to the Steinert family in Eden’s Flaxman Valley, a plot of vines more than 120 years old. From it comes the jewel in the Powell and Son stable, available at the audacious price (especially for a new wine brand) of $750 per bottle. But there is lineage in both the vineyard and the people who are crafting the wine and the $500-plus line has been crossed successfully by Dave Powell in the past: he knows the territory. Aside from lineage the wine has plenty to back up the bluster; it’s a dense, chewy, powerful red that sings of Eden Valley with its herbal notes and lifted fragrance set against dark fruits. And there’s formidable power and structure thanks to the vine age. It will age, it will improve, and it will gain value. It’s quite a fiscal drop to the next in line – Loechel Eden Valley Shiraz at $100. The Loechel vineyard can’t compete with Steinert when it comes to vine age, but the wine has its own merits and in many ways I reckon it has Steinert’s measure – perhaps not as dense and fully structured but, for me, more alluring, lighter on its feet, more perfumed.
MARINE PRECINCT WITH A UNIQUE DIFFERENCE ... BECOME A MEMBER TODAY!
And the Loechal vines are somewhere around 50 years old so, like me, they have enough wrinkles and deep enough roots to make for their own idiosyncrasies: with wine, that’s a good thing. There are two other shiraz-based wines in the lineup – a blend of Barossa and Eden Valleys and a straight-up Barossa Valley. I guess you could call these the entry-level reds – $50 and $30 respectively – but they both punch pretty well for their price point. The Barossa Valley shiraz is the benchmark – lush, plush and plump; fruit forward and oak almost negligible. The Barossa and Eden Shiraz has more lift – lighter fruit notes, spice … probably more complex. But both are terrific. The odd man out, and my favourite of the lot, is the Grenache, Shiraz Mataro blend. It’s a show-stopper with the Grenache component (70%) shining brightly above the more low-toned notes of the dark-fruited shiraz and earthy mataro. With the exception of the top two wines the reds are raised in large 4,500 litre foudres, allowing them the softening influence of time in oak without the cedar, spice and vanillan characters that come with newer barriques. Both Loechel and Steinert spend 18 months in new, top-notch French oak barrels, but the density of the fruit in both wines keeps the oak characters in the background. There’s an Eden Valley Riesling – a surprise considering the dominance of red wine in the portfolio and the red-wine-focus of both father and son. Again old vines are the key, this time it’s a small (5 acre) dry grown vineyard planted eighty years ago in the Flaxman Valley. It’s simply delicious – lime-juice, mineral, floral; quite fleshy and juicy. In typical Eden Valley Riesling style it should

age quite gracefully. The Powell’s are keeping distribution fairly tight, choosing a small number of restaurants and retailers across the country. But that’s about all they’ll need: the production is small, the wines are excellent and Dave Powell has both a stellar reputation and a lot of friends in the business. It‘s a promising beginning.

Street cred McLaren’s Formula 1 spin-off delivers the ultimate driving experience.
WORDS CHRIS NIXON
SPORTS CAR CRED doesn’t come better than driving the brand with its nose on the front of a Formula 1 racer. That used to mean just Ferrari, but in recent times McLaren F1 has tapped its reputation and ultra-tech expertise to build its own road car range, providing a compelling alternative to the Prancing Horses. As dramatic as the Italian Ferraris, the Britishbuilt McLarens exhibit all the precision and tense restraint for which the company’s boss Ron Dennis himself is renowned. McLarens have been a rare and exotic sight on the home streets of Cove readers, but are set to become more popular since the launch of Queensland’s first official dealership by the Sunshine Group at Southport.

They’re on the race-tracks too, with Gold Coast businessman Tony Quinn and professional V8 Supercar driver Shane Van Gisbergen hauling in silverware at events such as the international Bathurst 12-Hour. McLaren Automotive was a new venture when the first model, the 12C, was launched in 2011, but the brand has historic precedents. It was founded as a racing car team and manufacturer in 1963 by gifted young Kiwi driver Bruce McLaren. He built successful grand prix and sports cars, but the momentum was interrupted when McLaren was killed while testing one of his machines in 1970. Dennis joined in 1980 and brought with him designer Gordon Murray, who penned the extraordinary McLaren F1 coupe.
The F1 was hugely advanced, with a carbon fibre body structure weighing only 100 kilograms, unique central driving position and even gold-leaf heat-proofing in the engine compartment. Fashion icon Ralph Lauren owns one of these original models and going by a recent auction, you’d need around $17.4 million to be like him. Although only 106 examples were made, the F1 established the DNA of today’s McLarens – innovative design, low weight and high efficiency. Available here are the luxury 540C and 570S and sporty 650S and 675LT coupes and 650S convertible, list-priced between $325,000 and $511,000. The number in the model name signifies the horsepower output and all are driven by a lightweight, twin-turbo V8 engine of 3.8 litres.

Even the ‘entry-level’ 540C hits 100 kmh in 3.5 seconds and tops 320 kmh. McLaren Automotive has committed to producing a new model every year – an ambitious goal for a niche manufacturer – and introduced its latest, the 570GT, at the 2016 Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne. Due here in the fourth quarter, the Sports Series 570GT will be priced from $438,000 on-road. The company says it’s the most refined and road-biased McLaren yet, designed for day-to-day usability and long distance comfort. With Aston Martin also announcing a road-car collaboration with Red Bull Racing at the grand prix, it’s clear McLaren Automotive is literally on the right track in the race to bring the Formula 1 experience to everyday drivers. Mini Merc Mercedes-Benz’s A-Class hatchback is a winner. WORDS CHRIS NIXON
MERCEDES-Benz will be pleasing plenty of first-time owners of the prestigious brand with its least-expensive model, the A-Class hatchback. Five, five-door variants priced from $37,200 plus on-roads are designed to lure new owners into the Mercedes family, where it’s hoped they’ll remain for life and work their way through more expensive models. This is a strategy common to all prestige makers and buyers are the winners – the A-Class delivers good value for Merc buyers with a limited budget. At the opposite end of the range, the AMG A45 4MATIC is a rampaging faux-racer for the young set. With 280 kW of power and 475 Newtonmetres of torque, plus plenty of styling attitude, it blasts rival hot hatches into the shrubbery with a 0-100 kmh time of 4.2 sec. Streets of London The Insider’s Guide to London’s Outdoor Art Gallery.
WORDS LUCY BRANCH
VISITORS TO LONDON often head indoors when they want to see some famous art. The National Gallery and the Tate are the go-to places that every tourist has on their lists, but when time is precious, it’s really easy to multi-task in London. Some of the cultural hotspots and de-rigueur shopping precincts are surrounded by work created by the finest artists in the world in the form of public sculpture. It’s just about knowing where to look. If you are visiting Trafalgar Square, then take the time to walk a few metres further and view Charles I. Located at the top of Whitehall in the shadow of Nelson’s Column, this statue was created by a magnificent artist and craftsman, Hubert Le Sueur. A classical-style sculpture of the king on horseback, the piece has had a tumultuous life. It began with a great fanfare as it was the first largescale bronze monument made in this country in 1633. Its manufacture not only flattered the king, but also represented Britain’s growing capabilities in engineering to the rest of the world.
80
Unfortunately, Charles I was not to remain in favour and after his bloody beheading at The Banqueting House, the statue was sold for scrap. Thankfully, a savvy businessman saw an opportunity. Hacking off the lower section of the foreleg, he took it to Parliament to prove the sculpture’s destruction. In fact, he buried the statue with a thought that times might change again in the future. When Charles II came to the throne, the sculpture was dug up and dusted off and carried on a cart through the centre of London. The scrap dealer was paid again and the decapitated leg was re-joined. If you are visiting The Houses of Parliament, I urge you to walk down from Charles I via Whitehall. On the way, take a left along Whitehall Place where you’ll find a sculpture to really lift the human spirit: The Royal Tank Regiment by Vivian Mallock. Her magnificent contemporary sculpture created with such eloquence shows a glimpse of the camaraderie between the men that worked together from inside cramped Comet tanks to help win World War II.
After the Houses of Parliament, don’t hurry away. There’s a fine view of London from the corner of Westminster Bridge, and here you'll find the form of Boadicea and her daughters. This Victorian sculpture commemorating a classical warrior is magnificent in its execution. Thorneycroft, who visitors flock to see inside the Tate Britain, does not let his audience down. His horses are wild and rearing, his women are fearless and strong. This distinguished sculptor was not paid for this incredible statue and taking umbrage, he decided not to part with it. His son eventually donated it to the council after his death – what else could you do with such a colossus? The sculpture not only represents Boadicea's bravery, but also symbolised a desire for Britain to connect itself with a classical past, which was a Victorian obsession. The representation of a woman in public sculpture, even today, is rare which makes this piece of art even more significant. In fact, Boadicea was designed with a nod to Queen Victoria, who this part of the embankment was named after. >>

If you are taking a trip on The London Eye, the County Hall building just behind it overlooks the water on the south of the river. On the corner of the bridge is a majestic lion. Perhaps, this chap seems nothing special in sculptural terms but the formula used to make him was lost for nearly two hundred years. He is not a common stone as he might at first seem, but made from Coade stone, one of the first synthetic stones. The reason for its significance, in particular, is that it is highly robust to weathering and the urban environment and stays clean against all odds. If you are shopping in Covent Garden, don't forget to visit Degas’ Little Dancer. Located opposite the Royal Opera house, sitting on a stool, tying her shoe, she is a divinely slender sculpture. A humble image of a quiet moment before a performance, this small piece of art on pavement level is just as charming as any of his statues in The Musee d’Orsay or Metropolitan Museum, NY. If you are shopping in Bond Street, you shouldn't miss The Allies: a bronze of Roosevelt
82
and Churchill chatting together like two old friends. This sculpture by Lawrence Holopiener is loved particularly for its authentic portrayal of the friendship between the two men and gives character to the whole street. On Oxford Street, pause before entering Selfridges to look up and admire Gilbert Bayes’ masterpiece, The Queen of Time. A leading Victorian sculptor, who loved colour, he designed the jubilant queen in gold with her mermaids and mermen around her. Representing trade and commerce, she is the figurehead of Selfridges and was created to suggest that the rest of the building is her boat full of exotic international stock. If you are dining out in Piccadilly Circus, visit The Horses of Helios by Rudy Weller. Galloping out of their fountain, their wild abandon is twinned with the drama of gushing water. This British artist also provides us with an extra surprise – if you look up at the top of the building opposite, you will see his Three Graces diving elegantly into the air and making viewer’s hearts leap with them.
When visiting the Tate Britain, take a walk across the road and over to the water before leaving. You will see one of the finest Henry Moore's on the embankment. The Locking Piece has a rich and varied patina which shows off the sculpture’s marvellous contours enabling a visitor to see just why he became a contemporary artist heavy-weight. His sculptures are so valuable and popular that loans of his art are used for diplomatic purposes to broker deals between different countries. Public art has never had the status that gallery art enjoys though the calibre of London’s outdoor collection is outstanding. When offered the choice of seeing Henry Moore, Thornycroft or Degas in a room jostled by dozens of other tourists, or set against a majestic view of London, I know which I’d choose.

Cancellation confusion “It’s quite simple really ...” Patsy Rowe goes online to cancel her flight. RECENTLY MY GP told me I wasn’t to fly to work in Sydney so I hopped on the phone to cancel my flight and book another. A recorded voice told me: “Dial 1 to book a flight; Dial 2 to cancel a flight; Dial 3 to change a flight; Dial 4 to book baggage; Dial 5 to speak to a consultant; Dial 6 to return to Main Menu.” Unfortunately I’d already forgotten the number for ‘to change a flight’ so I dialled 6 to return to the Main Menu. Then I dialled 3 and hung on listening to repetitive rap music. Suddenly a voice broke in. I explained that I needed to cancel my flight to Sydney. “Of course, Madame. There will be a $40 charge to do it over the phone. If you go online, it’s very simple and there’s no fee.” I went online. And for 40 minutes I stayed there going round in circles. Realising this simple exercise was clearly beyond me, I rang the airline and went through the “Dial 1 for … ” and hit 2: I explained my dilemma. Another voice assured me that it was ‘very simple really’. “It may be simple, nevertheless I am having difficulty,” I replied. The voice was helpful. “Does Madame have a child in the house who could help?” In retrospect, my retort was perhaps a tad snippy. “I don’t have any children!”
84
There was a short silence. “Oh, I am so sorry, Madame.” “Yes, well not nearly as sorry as I am at the moment!” Another silence followed. “Perhaps Madame would find it easier to arrange a credit voucher for a future flight but you need go back online for this. Just use the ‘Ask Jess’ facility which is there to help confused passengers.” I clearly fitted the profile of ‘confused passengers’ so I went back online. I couldn’t see where I could apply for a credit voucher. Then I spied ‘Ask Jess’ in the top right hand corner. Delighted I typed my query. “I need to change a flight to Sydney.” Her typed answer came back. “How can I help you?” I typed, “I need to change a flight to Sydney.” Jess responded: “Do you have baggage?” I said again, “I want to change a flight to Sydney.” Clearly Jess was programmed for specific answers which, if you were lucky, responded to your questions. I wasn’t lucky. I rang the airline. “Dial 1 to book a flight; Dial 2 to …”, endured more repetitive rap music and was finally connected with another voice which described the configuration of the screen. But my screen configuration wasn’t the same. The voice suggested we look for ‘Compassionate Grounds’ and start from the beginning step by step.
I found ‘Compassionate Grounds’ and spent the next 20 minutes tapping away as the voice manoeuvred me around the site. And then the screen went blank. I yelled. The voice calmed me. “The site has timed out, Madame, because it is taking too much time to fill in the form.” I was getting testy. “Of course I’m taking a long time to fill in the form. It’s very small font and I can hardly read it.” “Please Madame. You are nearly there. You have done the form once, the second time will be easier. Same steps. Very simple …” “Don’t go!” I yelled. “I don’t know if I can remember what I did”. But the line went dead and I was on my own. I took a deep breath and wondered if 10am was too early for a drink. I opened the website and tried to retrace my steps. After 15 minutes I found the voucher – and hit ‘Submit’. “Great!” said Bill, who had wisely refrained from offering help “And how did you go cancelling the return flight?” The return flight! Of course. That had to be cancelled too. I scrolled back to re-open the site. It wouldn’t open. I rang the airline. “Dial 1 to book a flight; Dial 2 …”

What’s driving the GC property market? OVER THE PAST 12 months the Gold Coast property market has achieved modest price growth and many expect even stronger returns in the near future. The Gold Coast suffered more than most during the Global Financial Crisis. This was mainly due to the collapse in the building sector as well as a sky-high Australian dollar. In recent years, however, the region’s property market has been fighting back and gathering momentum. Firstly, there have been a large number of new construction and infrastructure projects taking place within the city. What does that mean? It means that many are flocking to the region as there are more job opportunities becoming available. As population growth increases, supply levels of property decreases. The Gold Coast currently has a low vacancy rate of 1.7 per cent. This is great for landlords because as demand increases, rent prices do also.
PROPERTY MARKET UPDATE WRITTEN BY ANGELA TRZ’AN CEO Master Wealth Coach
Many are paying more to purchase in desirable locations while others are buying off the plan in new development areas. This adds to even more construction jobs and stronger price growth. Another big factor supporting the economy is the low Australian dollar. This is helping to boost the tourism sector as more people from outside the country can visit Australia for a cost effective holiday. The low Aussie dollar also makes Gold Coast real estate appear comparatively cheaper to foreign investors which is resulting in many seeking out a bargain. What better place to invest than where property prices are still relatively affordable compared to Sydney and Melbourne and rental returns are strong?
Whether we like it or not, foreign investors are buying Gold Coast property. This is supporting job growth and increasing demand. Of course, we can’t forget to mention the impact of the 2018 Commonwealth Games. There have been many huge projects taking place in the lead up to the Games. The $700m Stage 2 light rail development, $600m Parklands Games Village and $200m+ Gold Coast Airport upgrade just to name a few. Grant Harrod, Chief Executive at LJ Hooker, expects growth between 5 and 10 per cent for the area over the next two years. Robert Mellor of BIS Shrapnel expects as much as 14 per cent. If you are looking at securing a property on the Gold Coast now would be a good time to get into the market as the region is in a recovery phase. However, when buying, always be sure to do your research first as some areas will do better than others.

Beachfront jewel It’s one of the most talked-about developments to take shape on the Gold Coast for some time, but the $1billion+ Jewel development at Surfers Paradise has its own story to tell. SOARING TO AN EXALTED 170 metres above the ocean, the Jewel development is destined to join the likes of Dubai’s Burj Al Arab or Iran’s Flower of the East as an illustrious piece of contextual architecture. Its three crystalline towers have been designed to appear as if they have simply emerged from the sands below, while the geometric, almost miragelike façade will stand as a beacon for maritime traffic on the Nerang River and out to sea. Joint venture partners Wanda Ridong knew that only the most remarkable and avant-garde structure could befit the rare 1.13 hectare parcel

of beachfront land, due to its extraordinary 130 metre wide beach frontage and supreme location, where the energy of Surfers Paradise met up with the urbane culture of Broadbeach. The initial design narrative became a collaboration between renowned Florida architect Chad Oppenheim and International award-winning Gold Coast DBI Design Director of Design Barry Lee – both captivating raconteurs whose story-telling abilities and creative genes are inextricably linked. “Anything that encloses space on a scale sufficient for somebody to occupy is a building,
but for us, it’s all to do with meaning, that’s what transforms a building into architecture. We see architecture as art,” says Barry. “If you’re doing a cathedral, obviously there are spiritual meanings that transform the building into architecture, but in residential high rises there are no real spiritual or transcendent meanings behind what we’re doing, so most of what we do becomes about the spirit of the place, the genus loci,” he says. To look forward, the pair looked back – 160 million years to be precise – to when the entire region was the heart of the largest shield

volcano to ever exist on the face of the earth – Mount Warning. “We thought, let’s look at the geology, let’s have a look at the forces that shaped the landscape here, and Jewel is a direct consequence of that exploration,” Barry explains. The volcanic forces created a foundation of solid basalt which now lies around 40 metres below the sand. As volcanic rock cools it forms geometric structures such as the iconic Gold Coast and Northern Rivers headlands. If the material cools slowly beautiful delicate crystal structures form. >>

After tracking down three of these unique and beautiful smoky quartz crystals, the design for the Jewel development began to take shape – with the practices even scanning the crystals in 3D to ensure the closest resemblance. The two architectural teams kept the adjustments to a minimum, gently manipulating the scale to fit the program, and only modifying the angles slightly to maintain its practicality. “While geometric and fragmented buildings on a beachfront might seem a little odd initially, compared to our more fluid work, if you have a look at Fingal headland you can see those exact geometric shapes,” Barry says. The addition of an extravagant outdoor podium to emulate a lush, tropical oasis, complemented by soaring, open-air crystal corridors, only intensifies this connection. Wanda’s Design Director Basil Lim, who began his career working under one of the most significant architects of Australia’s modern era, the late Ken Woolley, says the creative team has focused on Jewel’s homogenous ideology
94
from the outset – creating an internal offering that utilises the uniqueness of organic and natural materials. Its lavishly-appointed apartments will be graced with timber or natural stone flooring and kitchens and bathrooms featuring beautiful marble and onyx surfaces, offset with sophisticated tapware, basins and fittings designed exclusively for Jewel. “We always want to create something we would want to use for ourselves. You want to show your friends that this is one of a kind, and approach a luxury apartment like you would fine jewellery,” Basil says. “When you know there are only 512 of these apartments in the world, because you don’t just find a project of this calibre that’s on a worldfamous beachfront like this one, then you can understand that if you don’t get it, someone else will. “It’s a trophy. When you talk about the buyer we are creating this for, well, you don’t just buy a Ferrari – you buy a horse. Why? Because in the
luxury market, everyone can buy a Ferrari, but not everyone can buy a champion horse,” he says. Towering over sand and surf, the majestic crystal triptych will enrich Australia’s Gold Coast when completed in 2019, positioning it as a beacon for luxury property development across the world. “Many people have asked us why our first out-of-the-ground project out of China is on the Gold Coast, but for us, we see this as a historic, milestone moment. You will see a resurgence of projects around here in the next five to ten years, and we are at the forefront of this project initiation and development,” Basil explains. “I’ve been around the world a lot, and I know that in 20, 30 years, Jewel will be something that people will look at and say, ‘Wow, someone actually did it on the Gold Coast’.”

Home base Gallery Homes – the art of living.
WORDS RHONDA OXNAM
THERE IS AN OLD SAYING that you should never mix business with pleasure but for Adam and Kym Barclay living and working at Sanctuary Cove has proved to be a winning combination. The couple established Gallery Homes, an investment property company, in Brisbane in 2011. They moved their business operations to Sanctuary Cove several years ago and 12 months later relocated their home base as well. “Sanctuary Cove is close to home and close to our heart,” Kym explains. “All of our business assets, as well as our personal assets, are located in here.”
96
With three tenancies housing around 30 employees in The Marine Village and many homes under construction behind the gates, Adam and Kym have a vested interest in the community. “One of the things that make us a little bit different to a lot of the builders in Sanctuary Cove is that we do live here, our office is here and our properties are here so we are all about keeping with the covenant and maintaining the integrity of the resort,” Kym says. While Adam takes care of the Sales, Strategy and Business Development side of the operations,

Kym has a very hands-on approach, contributing to the designs and styling of all the homes. “One of the biggest things in what we do is that we really consider who we are selling to,” she says. “We are not just a cookie-cutter builder who has a set of plans and puts them onto any block of land. We have a range that we show people through so we can get an idea of what they like, what sort of floor plan suits them, whether they have a family, whether they may be bringing several families together, which means you might do two master bedrooms with ensuites and separate areas for the kids.” >>
97
6A Masthead Way, Sanctuary Cove
Kym’s eclectic design style fuses New York chic with French provincial charm, urban industrial with relaxed boho, giving a unique edge to every Gallery Homes project. “Most of our buyers see the way our homes are styled and they are happy to leave that side of things to me so they don’t have to do all the running around choosing fittings, etc,” she says. The homes themselves are a testament to the couple’s commitment to quality and longevity. “It’s really about making sure we are doing what suits the buyers but also what will work in the resale market,” says Kym “It’s steering people into something that’s commercial as well as something that suits their lifestyle.” “I think that’s even more important because we have an international audience,” adds Adam.
98
“We’ve got buyers from all over the world and they all want to bring a part of their home to Australia. Our job is to take those ideas and make sure they fit with the local culture, local climate and local environment so that if and when they make the decision to sell the property it is going to suit someone else.” Both Adam and Kym are also mindful of the legacy they are creating for the entire community. “The housing in Sanctuary Cove drives the capital growth for everyone here, us included,” Adam explains. “If there is a dip in the market we don’t ever want it to be as a result of the quality of product Gallery Homes is producing. We would prefer to turn business away than build an inferior product or something that doesn’t suit.
“The homes we are building are for both owner/occupiers and investors and also people who just want holiday homes. Those people then drive the success of the Village, which in turn drives the success of the whole community.” As a result, the couple takes a very personal approach to each and every project. “On our morning walks we often go and check on the homes that are under construction,” Kym explains. “We might do one area one day and another the next. You’ll often see us climbing up scaffolding and walking up and down having a look at the frame. “We want to be proud of whatever we do because everything that comes out of this business has a little bit of Adam and a little bit of Kym attached to it … “

Culture & creativity Noosa Long Weekend Festival presents ten magical days and nights of music, theatre, food and fun.
THE NOOSA LONG WEEKEND FESTIVAL (NLWF) is one of Australia’s most popular regional events, presenting a multi-faceted program featuring the best local, national and international talent. Fifteen years ago a local group of creative visionaries including renowned Australian playwright David Williamson and author Kristin Williamson (who remain Patrons of the Festival) had the idea to blend their passions and talents with the beautiful Noosa environment. Since then this magical festival has entertained literally tens of thousands of local patrons and international guests. The 2016 NLWF program encompasses a wide range of entertainment options including music, dance, theatre, cabaret, film, food, literature, children’s events and workshops. The colourful Hastings Street Carnivale parade will open the festival, concluding on Noosa Beach with a spectacular twilight skydiving display. Patrons who have purchased tickets will then head off to the J theatre to see the opening act, internationally celebrated Queen of Cabaret, Meow Meow, direct from her critically acclaimed
106
appearance as Titania in A Midsummer Night’s Dream at Shakespeare’s Globe theatre in London. Queensland Ballet is back this year with a program that includes both contemporary and neo classical ballets performed by the company’s most talented dancers, while spiritual Didgeridoo player William Barton also returns along with the Southern Cross Soloists in Visions on Earth. Other highlights include Swing on This starring Michael Falzon, Rob Mills, Luke Kennedy and the 9 piece Swing on This orchestra; Mario, the story and music of Mario Lanza; and Comedy Tonight!, an irreverent show presented by comedy headliner Mandy Nolan supported by Melony Brests (Matt Dunstan) and international Burlesque sensation Sunday Lucia. Something extra special this year is the launch of Locale after Dark hosted by Radio Hot 91 breakfast presenter Sam Coward. On any particular night throughout the festival you may find yourself treated to an informal ‘pop up’ experience, dining and/or drinking alongside one of the festival stars. Six sumptuous food events will be on offer including Diva’s Al Dente Dinner at Ricky’s
River Bar & Restaurant where patrons will be entertained by Belladiva, four wonderful young sopranos singing opera’s greatest hits. 2016 NLWF Ambassador, Damien Anthony Rossi (from Channel 7’s The Great South East and The Sunday Mail) is particularly excited by this year’s diverse program. “NLWF is one of my very favourite annual events in Queensland and each year it has been with great anticipation and excitement that I have made the beautiful drive up from Brisbane to bask in Noosa’s stunning winter weather, soak up the festival’s creative atmosphere and enjoy the variety of exceptional arts, literary, cultural and culinary offerings it serves up in abundance,” he said. “I feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to promote this unique festival through my role as an ambassador and I encourage everyone to place it on their must-do list for 2016. Hope to see you all in July.” Noosa Long Weekend Festival 15 - 24 July 2016

CANCER 22 Jun – 23 Jul
The next two months will be particularly conducive to career and/or financial advancement. Decide where your true values lie; if they lie in earning money at the moment, this could be the time you excel businesswise if you put your efforts into your financial circumstances. If you feel time is more valuable than money, you’ll use finances to enjoy life more now.
SCORPIO 24 Oct – 22 Nov
PISCES 20 Feb – 20 Mar
LEO 24 Jul – 23 Aug
SAGITTARIUS 23 Nov – 22 Dec
You'll increasingly see how the various elements of your life feed successfully into one another, such as work, home and finances. If you're considering making changes at home or with property, ensure you gain advice, as mid-June could otherwise see mistakes made at home purely due to not having done your research. You'll appreciate being free of deepening financial debt.
ARIES 21 Mar – 20 Apr
A business collaboration or a change within a shared arrangement will mean you must re-assess the way you earn and invest money, and this will have considerable impact on the rest of your year, so ensure you choose wisely. A change in the way you share assets could be the key to success over the next two months. You may decide to implement a new budget for example.
VIRGO 24 Aug – 23 Sept
CAPRICORN 23 Dec – 20 Jan
TAURUS 21 Apr – 21 May
LIBRA 24 Sept – 23 Oct
AQUARIUS 21 Jan – 19 Feb
GEMINI 22 May – 21 Jun
You’ll reap the rewards of implementing a practical approach to work and finances now. Someone you have a fated or unavoidable connection with will come into the spotlight over the next two months, raising questions about your relationship and the way ahead. Make concrete plans to boost your love life and you could see truly wonderful developments in coming months.
It's important to look for work-life balance to avoid fatigue and also, financially, to avoid overor under-estimating your financial reach. These pitfalls aside, you could truly excel this month, especially with a health or daily schedule and career-wise. Look for expert advice to truly boost your financial circumstances and if you wish to make long-term financial agreements.

June's events suggest a flexible approach to career decisions could be the key to ongoing success. Analyse information to ensure opportunities are all they appear to be, and avoid debt traps. The following two months should present positive options to step up a level, but gambling must be avoided. Your personal life will enjoy a boost towards the end of June, early July.
June could present real turning points, as you'll gain insight into the best way forward in practical terms, especially concerning communications, travel and for some, financial or legal decisions. You’ll enjoy celebrating the importance of key people in your life and will appreciate the chance to gather your wits or simply to re-orientate yourself in the scheme of things.
Romance will blossom in June, and you’ll enjoy the entry of the Sun, Mercury and Venus into Leo later in July, bringing back your joie-de-vivre and replenishing your energy levels. You’ll appreciate the sense that you regain your mojo, especially at work and within your various endeavours and projects, especially once Mars completes its retrograde phase end of June.
sudoku Hard
Couples will find more time for love with a fresh approach to your work-life balance, and romance will blossom towards the end of June. A theme now is ‘fact versus fiction’, leading into September, when a long-held viewpoint may be reviewed. Ensure you self-nurture, or you risk exhausting yourself and will not be able to give to others; one of your favourite activities.
You’ll enjoy a minor lull in June, when you'll get the time to adjust expectations and direction; and then it's full-steam ahead again, so buckle up! A little renovation, DIY or upbeat developments with family and in your love life should delight and may include changes at home due to work or relationship demands. If considering a move, you will discover more options.
Financially, you could excel over the next two months, especially if you balance the books. For some, though, affairs of the heart will be the true focus, and these will impact your domestic zone. If you’ve been working on your home life, an upturn should be on the way. Developments will stimulate your appreciation for luxury in a lovely environment, especially in July.
Romantic developments and work circumstances will considerably affect your domestic life and environment over coming months. If you’ve reconsidered your bigger-picture circumstances during the first half of the year, are considering a move or another key property-related factor, you'll feel readier to make commitments to upscale or to boost your domestic scenario.
