Whether you are interested in food or fashion, art or architecture, we hope you enjoy this latest edition of the magazine.

Editor’s letter WHEN YOU STOP and think about it, Arts & Culture can be found anywhere and everywhere … from a cleverly crafted car to a decadently delicious dessert, from a perfectly presented property to a fun floral festival (did someone mention Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers?). With this in mind, we have dedicated this entire edition to the creative arts. Our gorgeous cover combines artistic endeavour with cutting-edge design, showcasing acclaimed Australian actor Marta Dusseldorp in a stunning Bally gown. Marta is also the subject of our feature interview. She chats with Susan about the changing face of Australian television and the challenges of playing three different characters – an investigative journalist, a royal commissioner and a nurse – in three different series, all at the same time … what a talent. We also speak with a couple of Gold Coasters who are making their mark both locally and internationally. Michelle Doherty, Co-Owner and Director of Alpha-H, explains why her Gold Coast skincare brand has become an international success story, while Mr Riyu Li, the man behind the visionary Jewel development in Surfers Paradise, shares the story of his extraordinary collection of wood carvings and sculptures, which boasts more than 20,000 pieces.

Our travel section has also had a cultural makeover as Lindsay plays tourist in some of Europe’s most vibrant cities, Paul checks out an artfully designed hotel/golf course complex in Malaysia, Patsy boards the lyrically named P&O Aria cruise ship and our guest contributor Tania Kernaghan goes Barra fishing in the Northern Territory (ok, fishing is not exactly an artform but Tania is one of our most respected country music performers so there is a connection). Still on the subject of travel, our Iconic Brand in this edition traces the journey of Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours. Over the past 30 years this Australianowned company has gone from the Great Ocean Road to great ocean cruising, with their itineraries now taking in many of the world’s most cultural destinations. Of course, we also have our regular selection of events, puzzles, books and recipe pages for those of you who enjoy a more hands-on approach to your cultural pursuits. So whether you are interested in food or fashion, art or architecture, we hope you enjoy this latest edition of the magazine.

FEATURE

Creating drama Acclaimed Australian actor Marta Dusseldorp relishes her role as a storyteller.

WORDS SUSAN LANG-LEMCKERT

‘TELLING AUSTRALIAN STORIES’, is what Marta Dusseldorp cites as the best aspect of her job as an actor. “I love examining the different worlds I put myself into. For example, at the moment I’m playing three different characters – an investigative journalist, a royal commissioner and a nurse – in three different series,” she says. “I love entertaining an audience and giving people time to sit and reflect on who they are and how they relate to the stories we are telling. And, hopefully, giving something to their lives – which can be as simple as entertainment, or can be more profound than that. “And working with good actors, writers, producers and directors and being part of a creative waterfall, trying to create a place we can go to that’s akin to the old-fashioned sitting around the fire – which is really what I think film, theatre and television drama still is – is something else I love,” she says. The Helpmann Award-winning actor is enjoying a particularly busy professional schedule this year, juggling theatre work with roles in three television series – Jack Irish, Janet King and A Place to Call Home. According to Marta, today’s television series are a far cry from the single-genre stories of days gone by. “They swerve from one type – say between noir and comedy – and back again”, she says. “They have to, because we can’t engage an audience

30

with just one theme anymore; these days the audience is sophisticated and drama literate. And with television drama – which is the centre of storytelling at the moment – being available almost 24/7 through carriers like Foxtel, people can, and are, ‘binge-watching’ shows. So the drama needs to keep moving, or it’d be too boring to keep them engaged.” That said, the sequential and sometimes slow unfolding of storylines that’s inherent to television series can provide some welcome relief from the fast-paced, on-demand nature of modern life. “With the world crowding in on us, we can sometimes get a bit overwhelmed about things,” says Marta. “But the beauty of something like A Place to Call Home is its patience and its nurturing of people’s psyches. It can be almost as slow as a heartbeat sometimes, and that’s a beautiful thing. When it works, it really sings. “And there’s something quite beautiful about seeing people rev up to watch the next episode of their favourite show on a particular night,” she adds. “Dostoyevsky and Shakespeare did that with their periodicals – that’s how they built their stories up and fed them to the people – and that’s what we have come back to.” Those classic playwrights are only two that Marta became acquainted with during her formal training through the University of New South Wales and the Victorian College of the Arts, as well as the practical experience she gained from performing with different theatre groups. >>

“I love examining the different worlds I put myself into. For example, at the moment I’m playing three different characters – an investigative journalist, a royal commissioner and a nurse – in three different series. ” – Marta Dusseldorp

“I served my apprenticeship in the theatre, where I made many, many mistakes for many, many years,” she says, “By the time I started playing lead roles on television I had had the best education to allow me to take those artistic chances. But those types of plays that I learned from are not being done anymore.” And the reason for that is simple, says Marta. “Funding is the basic need for arts – like sport, which is the other great cultural pastime in Australia. You need money for the entire experience, because you need time to get it right and you need to attract the right people – people who become apprentices and who then develop into professional lifetime artists. “All the theatre companies have suffered from major cuts [of recent times], and some have been cut completely. When you cut the funding to these

32

things you are cutting the voices, and our voices are all we have to delineate us from the rest of the world – our stories, our needs, our morals and our dilemmas. “We have world television and theatre, which is great, but we need our own television and theatre, and we also need to give people in the arts a chance because they’re the ones who are going to tell us what is going to happen next. “I think we do a very good job in Australia with such little amounts of money, compared to what’s being done overseas with far, far bigger budgets,” she says. “But we need to be responsible – we have to give to the companies to nurture them. It is imperative that funding to the arts is never cut. “Hopefully that conversation will never end, and we will keep fighting for it,” she says. “Our job is to dream.”

Creative conversations are something that abound in Marta’s household, as husband Ben Winspear is also an actor. “Creatively, it’s really exciting,” she says. “We encourage each other to go and see things and then exhaustively discuss it, or we throw it aside quite quickly; but, either way, it’s a lovely thing to share. The arts are incredibly important to us. “We’re not competitors; we complete each other in our work,” she says – and this was never truer than when she and Ben played husband and wife in the third season of A Place to Call Home. “Ben played a character with PTSD,” Marta explains. “It wasn’t about love and romance; it was a tortured, push-and-pull type of thing. It was an exciting, rich, dense experience for both of us, and one we will treasure because we know it will probably never happen again.” >>

With so much work on her plate plus a husband and two little girls, one could wonder how Marta also finds time to undertake charity work for Save the Children Australia, the Cancer Council of Australia and the Sydney Community Foundation – all causes she is passionate about. “The people working within the Save the Children Australia are absolute beacons of light, because they dedicate their lives to it,” she says. “Their budget is small, yet they do so much with it. Everyone deserves a childhood; everyone deserves an education. They are very basic human needs. But as an actor I can highlight areas of need and help to raise much-needed funds. “My involvement with the Cancer Council is more personal, as people in my family have had cancer. I can encourage people to buy a bunch of daffodils and the money goes towards science and cancer research. These days 90 per cent of children with leukaemia – the cancer that took my brother – survive. With funding you can keep going with that, so it’s imperative that it continues. “And I’ve recently joined the advisory council of the Sydney Community Foundation, which works with women and girls in the Sydney area to pinpoint things like domestic violence and to empower women to get out of those environments. As a woman with girls, I am pleased to be involved in that”, she says. “It’s a matter of doing what you can with the time you have. People ask me to do speeches at events and they sell tickets to raise funds, but I sometimes walk away thinking, ‘Gosh, is it enough?’ “What you can do as an actor is tell the stories and get them into people’s living rooms in a fictional setting, which sometimes helps people to digest it more. Our good writers talk about what they are reading in the news. They look at what Australia needs to discuss and explore and they present it to us as drama, then we actors do our part on the screen. “It comes back to the importance of telling Australian stories.”

ICONIC BRANDS

The scenic route Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours – the spirit of innovation.

Scenic Eclipse Avignon

36

WORDS SUSAN LANG-LEMCKERT

OUR 30TH IS A BIRTHDAY some approach with a sense of trepidation, but for Scenic Luxury Cruises and Tours the next phase can’t come quickly enough. And if anything, the organisation’s phenomenal expansion in the 30 short years since Glen Moroney founded his first domestic coach tour company is nothing short of amazing. His own travels along Victoria’s picturesque Great Ocean Road inspired Glen to take tourists to enjoy the spectacle in comfort and, in 1986, Warrnambool Scenic Tours was born. Though the tours met with immediate success, it was felt the experience could be further enhanced by the introduction of twodoor coaches. With no suitable vehicles available, Scenic custom designed their own – showing the spirit of innovation that’s been a constant throughout the company’s journey so far.

Soon new itineraries to other states and territories were added, requiring the first change of name to Australian Scenic Tours. And when the world-famous musical Phantom of the Opera began its extended Melbourne season, Australian Scenic Tours quickly became the conveyor of choice for many of the Australians who travelled to delight in the show. Further expansion was inevitable – first to New Zealand and Norfolk Island, then further afield to Southern Africa, Canada and Alaska. Once again the Scenic experience proved immediately popular with travellers and, within a short time, the company became the leading touring company in both Canada and Alaska. Scenic’s Sales Development Manager – Queensland and Northern New South Wales, Donna Reed, attributes this consistent popularity to the quality of the company’s itineraries.

“When developing new itineraries, our journey designers visit the destination and source information from locals as to what the highlights of that particular destination are,” she says. “They experience it themselves to find out what our demographic and clients would like to do at that destination, and whether this is something we should add to our program. “That local experience is a real point of difference for Scenic. We don’t offer run-of-themill activities to fill in time, but quality inclusions that really make the destination come alive for the client.” This approach and increasing customer demand generated continued expansion and the development of tours across Europe and Russia, throughout Asia and South America, before Scenic took another entrepreneurial turn by moving into the river cruising market. >>

37

Jasper - Budapest

“We were focused on land-based touring in the beginning, then in 2008 we moved into river cruising,” says Donna. “Now it is the foundation of our business.” Echoing their earlier innovation with the development of two-door coaches, Scenic set about designing and building their own vessels – called Scenic Space-Ships – for this exciting new venture. At the cutting edge of design, these ships were among the first to be built to 135 metres, which allowed for outdoor balconies and created more space for the bar lounge and even the addition of a second restaurant. According to founder Glen Moroney, Scenic wanted to deliver guests an experience they couldn’t get anywhere else. “What stuck with me was that you could not sit outside on a balcony and enjoy the spectacular never-ending scenery along the rivers,” he has explained previously. “We just knew there had to be a better way to build the ships. So we did.”

38

Lyon, by night

Again, success was immediate – the first two seasons completely sold out with guests keen to cruise on the unique ships that have been likened to floating hotels. “With Scenic cruises, every guest has a butler,” says Donna. “Other operators have butlers in some cabins, but not in every single cabin, as we do. That is a great selling point for us. Today’s traveller is looking for a unique and exclusive experience.” Over the next seven years Scenic continued to add to their Space-Ship fleet as well as upgrading their existing ships, bringing the ultimate in luxury to all of their river cruising guests. Today Scenic have a grand total of 16 ships sailing many of the Continent’s beauteous rivers, although they have become firmly renowned as the French river specialist. This shift in focus brought about a rebranding to Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours in 2015 and, in this auspicious 30th birthday year – Portugal and South East Asia will also be added to the ever-growing list of Scenic cruising destinations.

But perhaps the biggest 30th birthday gift will be the launch of Scenic Eclipse – the world’s first Discovery Yacht and the company’s first ocean cruiser – offering luxury suites, worldclass dining, top-shelf beverages, butler service and spa sanctuary. Twin-engine helicopters, a submarine and a fleet of Zodiacs and kayaks will add a new and exciting dimension to the shore excursion experience. Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours have come a long, long way from the Great Ocean Road to great ocean cruising. Though still completely and proudly Australian owned, the company now have offices throughout the world and two sister companies – Evergreen Tours and Emerald Waterways – and employ a global workforce of 1,600. And that’s something any 30-year-old can be rightfully proud of. For more information about Scenic contact Cove Travel +61 7 5577 9211

A global phenomenon Alpha-H is celebrating 21 years of revolutionary skincare. WORDS KERI BENVIN

FOR OVER TWENTY YEARS, award-winning skincare brand Alpha-H has been creating revolutionary cosmeceutical formulations, which have helped bridge the gap between the beauty counter and invasive treatments. With gushing reviews like ‘bottled brilliance’ and ‘miracle factor’, this Gold Coast brand has become a global success story. In order to conquer the cosmeceutical world on an international scale Alpha-H has had to compete in an overcrowded market, which is dominated by large multinationals with huge advertising budgets. “Never in my wildest dreams did I ever imagine Alpha-H being the globally recognised ‘go to’ solutions brand that we have become,” says Co-Owner and Director of Alpha-H Michelle Doherty. “In twenty-one years we have gone from defending the tingle associated with using our glycolic-based formulations, to owning it. Consumers now realise they have to challenge the skin by using active ingredients in order to get clinical results, and that’s our specialty.” No one knows skin quite like Michelle does; suffering with her own skin conditions in her twenties led her to create products which deliver on the promise of a healthy functioning skin. After feeling a lack of empathy from skincare brands and frustration with market offerings that failed to perform, Michelle set out to create products, which provide solutions rather than a band-aid. “Brands need to be accountable for the products they create,” she insists. Being pioneers of glycolic based formulations for over two decades has positioned Alpha-H as leaders in skin resurfacing and preventative age management. Their bestselling product, Liquid Gold, is symbolic of this success, achieving global cult status with one being sold every minute of every hour. “This is the beauty staple that is found in the bathrooms of beauty editors,” says Michelle. Testament to this; the iconic product is often praised by beauty media with Harper’s Bazaar recently calling it ‘one of the best resurfacing treatments on the market’. Despite becoming an international phenomenon, the family-run company is still grounded by its values of social responsibility.

48

“The Alpha-H experience extends to everyone that works to get the product to the customer, from the people that manufacture our packaging to those who deliver our products,” says Michelle. “As we expand we’re creating global opportunities and that’s empowering.” What was once a small operation consisting of two products is now a thriving facility operating out of its Gold Coast headquarters. “Our exponential growth has allowed us to build our own manufacturing facility which not only increases employment in our local area but also allows us to more closely monitor the quality, consistency and standard of each formulation,” Michelle says. With a bevvy of awards under its belt, its no wonder Alpha-H’s products are being snapped up by cosmetic giants such as Sephora and Marks and Spencer. In fact, Alpha-H is now stocked in department stores, prestige clinics and exclusive day spas in over 25 countries. To mark their recent launch into Harvey Nichols in Dubai, Alpha-H partnered with super blogger and makeup maven Huda Kattan to sponsor her 3rd Ultimate Beauty Master Class. “She’s one of the most influential women in beauty, reaching millions of followers worldwide, it’s such an honour to be working alongside someone of that calibre and it’s great for Alpha-H to have prominence in such a beauty savvy nation.” Being at the cutting edge of professional grade skincare since the late eighties, Michelle has seen many brands come and go. So what’s the secret of Alpha-H’s success? “Market relevance and always being at the forefront. We don’t follow trends; we are the trend. Gone are the days of conventional skincare; it’s never slowed the ageing process and it won’t now. “People should be looking for products that are evidence-based with concentrations of active ingredients proven to cultivate the integrity and health of the skin.” With all that they have accomplished in 21 years, Alpha-H’s core message remains unchanged, to give consumers clinical results with minimal effort and zero downtime.

Modern medicine Gold Coast residents now have another option available to them when it comes to better managing their healthcare.

Dr Reza Madah

ACCORDING TO A RECENT STUDY undertaken in the UK, researchers have found that extending appointments with GPs to 30 minutes is more cost-effective than many prescription drugs. The findings, published in The Daily Mail, claim patients who had more time with a doctor or practice nurse were in better health a year later than those who had the usual ten-minute slot, and the extra costs of the longer session worked out at considerably less than the threshold for life-improving drugs. In keeping with these findings, a new form of healthcare, known as concierge medicine is gaining popularity. Previously referred to as ‘direct care’, concierge medicine is not a new term. It emerged during another era, when doctors used to prioritise treating their patients, visiting them at home and being available to them as and when they were needed. During this time, doctors were wholly responsible for the wellbeing of those under their local care. In addition to personally providing patients with the best medical care possible, a medical concierge model focuses on prevention, early detection and treatment of chronic disease, malignancy and education.

50

These services are further strengthened by coordinating treatment with a range of specialists. “Nowadays, there is a multi-leveled culture of GPs, specialists, hospital care and A&E facilities,” explains Dr Reza Madah, Practice Principal of Atlas Medical Concierge (AMC). “The variation of these provisions however, means the medical fraternity has missed out on the real objective of medicine: to build strong relationships with patients in order to ensure their health.” Offering the first medical concierge service in Australia – and one of the select few in the world – AMC is a pioneer in customised, comprehensive primary health care, offering a VIP experience and continuity of care. Founded on the belief that highly personalised medical care is the basis for optimal health, the doctors at AMC are committed to making exceptional medical care available to everyone. “We chose a concierge model because it allows us to practice family medicine the way we know it works best – partnering with our patients to deliver holistic, comprehensive and thoughtful care that in turn promotes excellent health,” says Dr Madah. “Concierge medicine improves the doctorpatient relationship by putting patients’ health

back into their own hands,” he adds. “They have the opportunities to ask questions, get answers, and tailor a plan for a healthy lifestyle.” Dr Madah has more than 20 years of experience in all areas of general medicine and intensive care medicine. He says the concierge service puts the patient in the driving seat as appointments are booked according to their schedule rather than the GPs. “I am aware of the difficulty people face in obtaining continuity of quality medical care in an increasingly complex and impersonal healthcare system,” he says. “And this is exacerbated by busy work schedules, and even lifestyles that take one away from home for any length of time.” With no waiting times and a minimum of 30 minutes consultation time, the concierge model physicians are available 24/7 via SMS, email, video conferencing, or if needed via home visit. In addition to leveraging a host of mobile technologies, a concierge service also offers a range of innovative, consumer-friendly, mobile personal healthcare products that makes monitoring, viewing, storing and sharing of health vitals simple and comprehensive.

CUISINE

Island spice Relatively unknown in Australia, Mauritian cuisine is an exotic blend of cultures and flavours.

WORDS TONY HARPER

THE DODO had its home on Mauritius. And, in a typical display of human pig-headedness, we culled them into extinction. A fact that – aside from tasting the occasional rum – is (or was) a succinct summation of my understanding of Mauritius. Until, that is, about a week ago when Rani Veerassamy walked into my store and left a business card that sparked my interest: Rani’s Cuisine. Now I know Mauritius to be a rather spectacular island about 830 kilometres east of Madagascar: blue waters, great fishing and awesome scenery. Rani is Mauritian born and bred. These days she lives in Brisbane and makes a living holding private cooking classes and producing a range of spectacular condiments, spice mixes and pastes. “I grew up on the island of Mauritius in a very large extended family,” she says “We lived in a big yard that included a colonial house that had belonged to my grandparents. “There was an incredible variety of fruit trees in the garden, including mangoes, lychees,

68

longans, tamarind, coconut and jackfruit. At the time, supermarket shopping was very limited so the food culture revolved around local produce, mostly what we and people around us had in their gardens and the local markets. “Food was always something that I was interested in,” she adds. “When I was young and my parents took me to friends’ houses, I would always be the first one at the table, ready to see what they had prepared. However, attending school in Mauritius was very labour intensive so I didn’t have much time to learn to cook when I was a teenager. Besides, my aunt – my father’s sister – who did a lot of the cooking in the family was, and still is, a fantastic cook.” According to Rani, Mauritian cuisine is a blend of cultures – Chinese, Indian and French – morphed with the ingredients that have been available on the island – seafood, fruit and vegetables – and tempered by various religions. So it is exotic stuff – some of it quite familiar (coq-au-vin, sweet and sour pork, noodles

and curries) and some of it more alien hybrids. Rougaille is a staple ingredient; tomato, onion, garlic, chilies and spice fired together into a sauce to accompany a variety of foods. Pickles are common, preserving the fruit and vegetables for the off-season. “Over the years, the food has evolved and become a bit of a fusion of the cultures,” says Rani. “Mauritius is a very multicultural country as a result of migration during the colonial era and much of the food reflects the ethnic origin of the inhabitants. “My own family originates from Southern India and the food they prepare often has its roots there, especially the food prepared during religious festivals. “The population of Mauritius is interesting because we have no indigenous people; instead we are a product of years of colonial rule. The majority are of Indian origin, most of whom are descended from people brought to Mauritius as

indentured labourers after the abolition of slavery. Many of them come from northern states in India such as Bihar and Maharashtra, but there are many from southern states, such as Tamil Nadu (like my family) and Andhra Pradesh. “There are also significant Chinese and Creole populations, most of which [the Creoles] are descended from people of French and African origin. “The food is also influenced by the religious beliefs of the people. A lot of people of Indian descent will not eat beef or pork and many are vegetarian, while the Muslims will not eat pork. “All of these preferences are reflected in the recipes relating to their cultures. Each ethnic or religious group celebrates religious events with their own specific dishes. For example, Eid-ul-Fitr would be celebrated with biryani, a layered rice and meat dish, Divali or Deepavali would be celebrated with traditional Indian sweets, specific to the region from which the particular family originates.” It’s a scarce cuisine in Australia. Café Tamarin at Burleigh Heads morphs Mauritian with Modern Australian and for the rest of south-east Queensland it’s slim pickings. But there’s always Rani with her condiments and classes.

WINE CELLAR

Bottle art Taking an artistic approach to winemaking. WORDS TONY HARPER

CHATEAU MOUTON ROTHSCHILD has been commissioning artists to decorate its labels since 1945. The fee is paid in cases of the famous First Growth Bordeaux, so it’s an assignment that few folk – no matter how successful – would pass up: Picasso, Miró, Francis Bacon, Jeff Koons (there’s nudity, yes, but it’s gentle; the Balthus label of 1993 caused much greater stir amongst the politically uber-correct), Chagall and Salvadore Dali are just the better known of the 70-odd artists who have accepted the challenge. I guess they trust their luck for a great vintage – John Huston, Francis Bacon, Phillippe Jullian, Jean Cocteau, Georges Braque, Georges Mathieu, Pierre Alechinsky and Paul Delvaux probably scooped the pool; Picasso missed out with the vinously very dull but important vintage for both Picasso (he died) and Mouton (it was elevated to First Growth) of 1973. I doubt it’s the first, but it’s certainly the most salient and well-known relationship between wine and the arts and the revelation of a new Mouton Rothschild label still arrives with a great hubbub. At home, Leeuwin Estate is the nearest we have to a Mouton replica with its Art Series labels reserved for the pinnacle wines in its repertoire. And the list of artists – albeit more local than Mouton’s – is stellar; Sir Sidney Nolan, Arthur Boyd, Fred Williams, Lloyd Rees and Albert Tucker just to name a few. But Leeuwin goes an artistic step beyond Mouton with its annual concert that has, over the decades, hosted an incredible cast: Dame Kiri Te Kanawa with James Galway, the London Philharmonic, Ray Charles, Diana Ross, Tom Jones, George Benson, Shirley Bassey, Roberta Flack, Michael Crawford – it’s an amazing list that kind of makes the 9 hours travel to Margaret River an easy cost.

72

Leeuwin Estate’s interest is philanthropic and began with a fiscal donation to the London Philharmonic way back in 1985. Does it make the wines any better? Perhaps it does for folk who like to collect labels and figure the background story as a legitimate part of the wine’s allure. But even without special labels and an annual concert the Leeuwin Art Series wines are stellar. The chardonnay heads the pack and over the past few years it has undergone a steady change from the powerful, fruit-forward wine that became an Australian icon to a more subtle, lean, contemporary version. Is it still the best in the country? Only time will answer that question – and not for several years – but it is certainly in the running. And the Art Series Cabernet Sauvignon has gone from a passable attempt to a stunning example of what Margaret River can produce. At Heathcote, almost slap-bang in the centre of Victoria, Ian and Gwenda Langford farm 18 hectares of vineyard and produce wines under the Mount Camel Ridge label. Things are done sustainably – no irrigation (relying, instead, on Heathcote’s moisture-retaining soils), minimal chemical input and mulching to promote soil life and health. The wines are wonderful, held back until at least partially mature (2008 vintages are now on the shelves) and while they show the generosity that comes with Heathcote reds, they manage to avoid the blustery alcohol levels and super-ripeness that dog some of the wines in the area. The best is the shiraz (with a wee drop of viognier). Over the past half decade it has built complexities that only come with age – earth, spice and depth – but its core has the fragrance and dark-berry notes that sing of Heathcote.

Mount Camel Ridge Merlot is potentially the best in the country (certainly in the top five); it has depth, structure and elegance; rare characters in Australian merlot. The Langfords are also passionate about the arts, particularly chamber music. They met at a chamber recital and they both believe that the continuance of culture demands constant attention. “Culture and the Arts are critical components of a civilised society,” they have said. “We believe that culture is but one generation deep and if it is not handed on it will be lost.” The last sentence resonates; culture is learned, usually through parents, sometimes mentors, occasionally friends. But its continued existence relies on its bequeathing which is why Ian and Gwenda support the arts; doing their part to ensure its passing to the next generation. “We support two Chamber groups, Kammermusik and Quartz, both masters of their art. We also, each year release our new vintage at the Gray Reid Gallery in Melbourne, makers of fine handcrafted jewellery, again masters of their art form.” It’s admirable stuff, and unlike both Mouton Rothschild and Leeuwin Estate the Langfords don’t use their philanthropic activities to promote and popularise their wines; they use their wines as a fulcrum to help the arts. Regardless, the whole deal makes sense to me: folk who drink high quality wine tend to have a passion for the arts (even if those committed to the arts don’t always reciprocate). And there is creativity and art that goes into making all but the most basic wine; the really good stuff takes the touch of a maestro.

European vacation With a myriad of options on offer, taking a European vacation has never been easier. The Louvre, Paris WORDS LINDSAY BENNETT

IT’S BEEN MORE than five years since our last holiday abroad, so we planned to make this the trip of a lifetime. Starting in London, we would then visit Paris and Nice before heading to Italy, all in an actionpacked three-week period. Where some may look to skimp on accommodation, for us it’s about the total experience – from the lounge and the flights, to enjoying centrally-located prestige properties, great food, personal service and attention to detail all the way – well, as much as the wallet will allow. The first decision was finding an airline that had seats available and at a price that didn’t scuttle the budget before we even taxied down the runway. After a little deliberation, we chose Etihad Airways ‘Business Studio’. What better way to travel – especially given we could fly direct from Brisbane. Nothing could quite prepare us as we arrived at the first of our Leading Hotels of the World properties and stepped inside The Ritz London – with so much history, opulence and beauty, the sheer grandeur was simply breathtaking. I could not think of a better place to stay to experience all that this magnificent city has to offer. There is so much to see and do in London and to make sure we could fit in as much as possible we pre-booked a 2-day London Pass

74

– a sight-seeing card designed so you don’t have to carry around cash or queue to buy tickets at each attraction; saving time and money. Our must-see list included Buckingham Palace, The Tower of London and Tower Bridge, Westminster Abbey, Kensington Palace, Churchill’s War Rooms, the Wallace Collection, Hampton Court Palace, Thames river cruise, The Tate, British Museum and Selfridges, and to simply stroll the streets and just take it all in. Fortunately we managed to experience time at each of these sites, but the highlight was our early morning walk through Hyde Park and the tour of Kensington Palace. Our only regret was that we did not have the time to take in a London West End show. Leaving The Ritz was hard, especially given how warm and friendly all the staff had been. Nonetheless, it was time to think about the journey ahead. While we could have flown to Paris, we chose to experience the Eurostar high-speed e320 train. Reaching speeds of up to 297km per hour and taking a little over two hours, this was a wonderful way to see the countryside without the fuss generally associated with airports, customs, security and sitting around – and a completely different experience to rail travel in Australia.

We were soon pulling into Gare du Nord station. From disembarkation, it took no time at all before we were in a pre-booked taxi being whisked through the streets of Paris to Hotel Lancaster – a boutique hotel comprising 45 rooms and 11 suites situated in an 1889 refurbished townhouse that sits just a block from Avenue des Champs-Élysées. Built as a private residence, it was converted into a hotel in 1930. This luxury property has received many distinguished guests including Clarke Gable, Greta Garbo, Grace Kelly, Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. More recently the hotel has been home to such celebrities as Katy Perry and Mick Jagger. The hotel has a Michelin-star restaurant – La Table du Lancaster – and an elegant bar with 1930s-inspired décor. Home to the Moulin Rouge, Paris is favoured for its artistic vibe, so the first thing we did was to sit at a kerbside café on the Champs-Élysées to watch street life pass by and experience this rich creative culture. In our short time, we visited the Notre-Dame Cathedral, Musee du Louvre, Musee d'Orsay and Musée Rodin. But no trip to Paris would be complete without taking a tour through the Château de Versailles – just a short 30-minute train ride out of the city. >>

Monaco

As we strolled towards the grand gates and into the Gardens of Versailles, nothing could have prepared us for this impressive and wonderfully opulent property. Everywhere you look you can see the symmetry and formality of the gardens combined with perfect design and craftsmanship. It’s preferable to visit first thing in the morning to avoid the queues but be sure to wear comfortable shoes. Another highlight included a tour through the Musee Jacquemart-Andre – a majestic 19th century Parisian mansion just a short stroll from our hotel. It was like stepping back in time with all the grandeur and opulence including impressive artwork and furnishings. This is a definite must-do for anyone visiting Paris. Leaving Paris after our 4-day adventure, we boarded the TGV fast train for the next leg of our journey to Nice. Taking a little over five hours, and travelling at speeds of up to 320km per hour, it is a good idea to book upper deck seats that are referred to as ‘upper duplex’ to truly appreciate the countryside. Arriving at Hyatt Regency Nice – situated on the prestigious Promenade des Anglais – we were not disappointed. Not only does this striking hotel enjoy seafront and mountain views, it is also located within a short walk of many of the city’s key attractions.

76

Nice is an ideal destination to discover the wonderful sightseeing opportunities of the Côte d’Azur and the iconic cities of Cannes and Monte Carlo are just next door. The French Alps are also close by and easily accessible for those wishing to take a break from the city and the Mediterranean coastline. In order to see as much as possible we hired a car to visit these remarkable tourist destinations (we would recommend that you check the car has a GPS to direct you, as without it could be a little daunting on the auto strata). The highlight of Nice was definitely our daytrip to Monaco and the tour of The Prince's Palace of Monaco and The Prince of Monaco’s Vintage Car Collection, and to stroll the marina of Monte Carlo Harbour and admire the vast collection of super yachts. It was also fun to drive the Grand Prix track, around Casino de Monte Carlo, through the tunnel and back down to the marina. It is easy to see why tourists the world over enjoy all that the French Riviera has to offer – it truly is a wonderful part of the world. Having taken in the sites of London, Paris and Nice, the next destination on our grand European vacation was Italy … but that’s a story for another day.

Road trip Apollo Motorhomes touch down at Daly River, Northern Territory.

WORDS TANIA KERNAGHAN

AS I SIP on a long black coffee at 30,000 feet flying over the red heart of beautiful Queensland, I am Northern Territory bound. Waves of excitement rush over me as I think about my next adventure and all it has in store. I am off to Daly River for the 21st Club Marine Insurance Barra Nationals. No, I am not competing in the event, I’ll leave that to the professionals. Over the next seven days my job will be to present a concert on one of the evenings as well as interview many of the 180 competitors and the all-important sponsors as I work alongside freelance cameraman Johnny Walker (don’t you just love that name). Together we will motor up and down the mighty Daly River hopping from boat to boat, chatting with the teams about everything from rods and lures to their secrets in catching the elusive Barramundi. I had always wanted to go to Daly River and, in particular, see what the Barra Nationals were all about. I guess it’s one of those events you just have to put on your ‘bucket list’.

78

When the booking to be a part of the event came into my office, I immediately decided to give my mates at Apollo Motorhomes a call. I knew they would have the vehicle best suited for the job plus I’d be doing the trip in comfort and style. Vehicle reliability was also particularly important to me as I was ‘flying solo’ this time. After arriving in Darwin, I decided to have a walk around the city centre. It had been eight years since I had last visited the Territory’s capital and ‘WOW’ it sure had changed. I couldn’t believe how much the city had grown. Everywhere I turned I spied another new corporate building or residential high-rise development. Business was booming. The city was a-buzz with people spilling onto the footpaths from the myriad of alfresco bars and restaurants. One thing that really stood out to me was the number of diverse nationalities enjoying the balmy evening. Suntanned backpackers from France, America, Germany, Sweden, you name it, there was a symphony of dialects ringing down the ever popular Mitchell Street.

Saturday morning couldn’t come quickly enough … soon I would be on the road heading south to Daly River. I sprang out of bed, excited to be picking up my Apollo motorhome, which would be my home for the next week. As my taxi arrived at the Apollo depot, Cory, from the Guest Services team, greeted me. Over the next half hour or so he ran me through everything I would need to know about the spacious 27 ft. Euro Deluxe Motorhome, ensuring my journey was smooth sailing all the way. I was really impressed with how immaculately the vehicle was presented even though it had clocked over 42,000kms. However, I was even more impressed with Cory and his attention to detail. Before too long I was heading down the Stuart Highway with a grin from ear to ear, I was livin’ the dream. Three hours later, having travelled through some spectacular countryside after the recent summer rains, I pulled into Banyan Park, home to the Barra Nationals and my camp for the next week. >>

Team Costa in action

The Park owners Wally and Kerry were delightful and very welcoming. I felt at home straight away. I wound my way through the leafy park and found my site. I always have a little chuckle to myself when fellas see a girl driving a motorhome or towing a caravan. I just know they are thinking, ‘she’ll never park that rig in there…’ but there is one thing I always remember, ‘never let the size intimidate you’. Now, I’m all for chivalry, however there are some cases, like this one, when a girl’s gotta do what a girl knows she can do. I backed the Apollo motorhome onto the site, without any fuss. The vehicle was super easy to manoeuvre and the reversing camera made it a breeze. My only advice is, just keep an eye on what’s above you, such as low hanging branches. The clearance for this vehicle is 3.7 metres, but I suggest you call that 4 metres, to be sure. With the power plugged in, water and sullage hoses connected, gas turned on heating up the hot water, awning out and bed made, I was set up within about 15 minutes. I love that this rig has its own separate shower and toilet, a real luxury. One of the many benefits in hiring a motorhome like the one I have, is that everything you need is included with the rental. Crockery, cutlery, glassware, cooking utensils, bedding and linen, camp chairs and table, gas bottles, even the water tank was full. Another great feature is the good size fridge. Time now to mix a cold G & T, with lots of ice and a twist of lime in a tall glass, and relax before my official duties commence this evening. There are three sleeping choices in my Apollo, a queen size bed area above the driver’s cabin, a dinette that can convert to a double and also the

80

2016 Champions Team Costa with a 116cm Barra

rear, larger dining area which converts to another double. I chose the sleeping quarters above the cabin, purely because I didn’t want to be making the bed each day and so I’d have more room to set up my work space. After a great night’s sleep, day one of the Barra Nationals kicked off without a hitch. Johnny and I hit the water early and got straight into interviewing the fishermen and women. I think I learnt more in one day about lures, rods, reels, fish finders, depth sounders and how Barramundi think, than I have in my whole life. A few good size Barras were caught which sent a flurry of optimism among the competitors, everyone enthusiastic about catching a big fish with one goal in mind, to go home with the title of Barra Nationals Champion for 2016. I was delighted to receive an email from Apollo Customer Assist Holidays, only 24 hours after picking up the vehicle. Cory was contacting me to check if I’d settled into my motorhome OK. He also attached a few ‘troubleshooting’ YouTube video links for me, just in case I’d forgotten those all-important tips he had briefed me with on pick up. I was really grateful to receive this as I had a little issue with the toilet cassette. Just one minute later, after viewing the link, the problem was fixed. The Daly River or ‘The Daly’, as the locals fondly refer to it, begins where the Katherine and Flora Rivers intersect and flows across the northwestern portion of the Northern Territory to the Timor Sea. In the wet season The Daly can rise some 17 metres overnight and subside just as quickly. There are plenty of salt and freshwater crocs to

stop you from dipping in your toes. To watch the sunrise over The Daly is like an elixir for your soul, sunset is as equally as nourishing and inspiring. All too soon, the Barra Nationals had come to an end for another year. Territory lads, Team Costa, were crowned Champions for 2016, with the biggest Barra caught during the week measuring in at an impressive 116cm. The thrill of watching the boys land such a huge fish made it very clear to me why this sport can be so addictive. As I drove my Apollo back to Darwin, I felt so incredibly lucky to have been a part of this fabulous event, meeting so many wonderful people in the process. The one thing about the Barra Nationals is, no matter where you come from, and whether you are a company CEO, a tradie, in the armed services, an owner operator or maybe a retiree, the camaraderie is strong. But I guess that’s the magic of fishing … even if you don’t actually catch anything, you can at least have a few drinks and a yarn with your newfound mates about the one that got away. One week after I took off, I completed my journey where it all began. The friendly faces at Apollo, Darwin, were there to greet me once again. As I turned off the engine and closed the cabin door, I was already planning the next time I would climb aboard an Apollo motorhome and follow the black top, ticking off another of my many ‘bucket list’ adventures along the way.

Paradise found Els Club Teluk Datai and The Andaman Resort, Langkawi, Malaysia. The Els Club Teluk Datai - Malaysia WORDS PAUL PRENDERGAST

IF YOU’RE FORTUNATE enough to travel the world for recreation with a little golf thrown in, it can be rare for both the destination and the golf to be as equally breathtaking and high quality as each other. There are many world class resorts in idyllic settings with golf courses that don’t match up to these high standards and, equally, the reverse can apply where the reputation of the golf course alone is the primary reason for visiting. It didn’t take much past the first impressions to be totally convinced that the combination of The Andaman – a Luxury Collection Resort – and nearby Els Club Teluk Datai golf course in Langkawi, Malaysia is one such ideal location. The cavernous and traditional Kampungstyled lobby is luxuriously impressive in itself but we were utterly transfixed when drawn to the view from the balcony edge, down to the free form pool built in harmony with the existing rainforest, and the turquoise expanse of Datai Bay beyond. ‘Paradise Found’ indeed and no matter the length of your journey and flagging energy levels on arrival, I defy anyone not wanting to ‘get amongst it’ and immediately seek to explore

82

every nook and cranny of this vast yet intimate resort, integrated perfectly within an ecosystem teaming with birds and unique wildlife. The bulk of the rooms of this recently upgraded resort feature mesmerising views of Datai Bay, surrounding forested hillside and near and distant islands. Many of the rooms and suites have private or shared plunge pools but all manage to inspire a unique phenomenon, in that no matter how many times you’ve grabbed a camera to capture the intoxicating outlook, you find yourself reaching for it again and again in search of the next perfect shot. Few pictures do it justice however. The Andaman features all you would expect of a world-class resort – restaurants and bars of superb quality, unsurpassed vistas and an array of laidback water sports including snorkelling the coral reef directly off the beach. Perched high on a bluff with commanding Bay views, V Integrated Wellness is arguably one of the most scenic spa treatment centres on earth and there are many tranquil, secluded spots under the canopy of trees at the beach or

around the pool area to disappear with a book and your thoughts. As impressive as The Andaman’s physical attributes are, their philosophy towards conservation measures is at the very heart of the Resort’s ethos and operations. Impacted as it was by the 2004 tsunami, the reef areas located in the shallows off Datai Bay are being systematically and lovingly restored by an inspirational partnership between The Andaman and marine biology students from local university campuses on Langkawi. Guests can dive with students based at The Andaman to retrieve living coral specimens from the bay, relocating them to a conservation pool that has been established on the grounds. Guided snorkelling tours are also available for guests to view the marine life being nurtured to more robust health before their eventual return to the bay. The Andaman’s Marketing Executive Edeline Berg also points out the resort’s passion for sustainability and support for the community by seeking as much local produce as they can. • New & Used Buggies is purchased twice a week from local fishermen who pull their boats up to shore outside the beautiful beachfront restaurant, Jala. The entire seafood menu of Jala (‘Fisherman’s Net’) is determined by the catch of the day with guests able to choose and discuss the preparation of their dishes directly with the executive chefs. Jala, the adjacent Beach Bar and Tepian Laut restaurant are all a step from the beachfront and the sound of waves gently lapping against the shore. Barefoot dining is encouraged but especially so at the sand floored Jala, to heighten ‘all five senses’ during your dining experience. After a few days of rejuvenation at The Andaman, I eagerly took the short trip up the road for a game at one of the most exciting ‘new’ golf courses in the world – the Els Club Teluk Datai, or ‘Datai Bay’ on translation. Australian brothers, Geoff and Ted Parslow, designed the original course over 20 years ago and Ernie Els was brought in to undertake a redevelopment of the layout and the obvious re-naming to the Els Club Teluk Datai over the past few years. >>

The Andaman Resort - Malaysia

In past visits, I’d never played golf here but marvelled from a road that dissected part of the course from the Andaman coastline at a green perched seemingly on the edge of the turquoise sea, with nothing between it and the islands in the distance that form part of Thailand. How exciting it was to return to find local authorities had conceded to re-routing the road to enable Els to bring more of this spectacular coastline into play. Each of the nines meander into the ancient rainforest framed by jagged mountainous peaks before returning to the coast with a visual assault of blue that takes your breath away.

84

The rich green carpet of turf was flawless and provided beautiful playing conditions, as inquisitive dusky leaf monkeys rustling in the trees or the awesome wingspan of eagles soaring overhead added pleasantly to the visual distractions of this gorgeous location. Managed by Troon Golf, the remodelled layout and world-class clubhouse and practice facilities have attracted rave reviews and international recognition but perhaps none more validating than the recent Golf Digest ranking of the ‘World’s Top 100 Courses’, which has the Els Club Teluk Datai debuting at No. 83.

The 19th Hole at the Els Club was a comfortable sanctuary after the round but so too was my ‘20th hole’ later that afternoon on return to The Andaman, with a refreshment or two in lazy chairs at the Beach Bar drinking in the setting sun over the picturesque bay as the cool of the evening slowly enveloped us. This was one tough place to drag yourself away from but in doing so, we were resolute in our determination to return to again soak up the unique experience that The Andaman and Els Club Teluk Datai combine to provide.

WELL TRAVELLED

Winter cruising Patsy Rowe spends seven days cruising the warm waters of Far North Queensland.

THE SKY WAS GREY with gentle drizzle when we boarded the refurbished P&O Aria in Brisbane for a seven day cruise up to Hamilton Island and Cairns so it was lovely to find a glass of chilled champagne and canapés waiting for us in our suite. I felt my mood inch up a notch as I thought of unpacking once and then spending a week being waited on hand and foot. (I sensed Bill was happy to be relieved of this role.) The rain persisted throughout the first night but in the two days sailing to Hamilton Island the ship was as steady as a rock. We’d been to Hamilton about 23 years ago and were surprised at the changes that had taken place. We went ashore by tender and were delighted to find that it’s still easy to get around in free shuttle buses but there were more shops and cafés at the Marina than we remembered, ranging from takeaway to smart restaurants. With so much development it was encouraging to hear that 70 per cent of the island is still in its natural state. One of the newest additions is the superb yacht club on the waterfront with sensational views over the water. It’s a stunning building with the shape of the roof inspired by full sails.

86

Being on a cruise is rather like a non-stop 24 hour eat-athon so we decided to buy a snack and a coffee and sit in the sun on a park bench overlooking the boats bobbing on the water, only to choose a table where the other couple were friends from Hope Island. Speaking of food, the ship offers The Pantry, as well as a main restaurant and four specialty restaurants which carry a surcharge. What with afternoon tea of dainty sandwiches and cakes, and champagne and canapés at 5pm, I found myself wearing looser clothes by day three. As every woman knows, eating means washing up and on enquiring I was told the platewash brigade cleans approximately 32,000 plates and 13,000 glasses a day (I will never complain about washing up again). Like all cruises there’s plenty to do. When we first boarded I was surprised that there was no library and the shop offered only limited books for sale. However, with the casino and the Tequila Tasting and trivia (which we love) and all the on deck activities it was non stop from dawn till dark. We loved the Gatsby Night where everyone really got into the spirit with amazing 20’s style ‘flapper’ dresses and feathered head gear brought from home. Many of the passengers ‘knew the ropes’ as this is apparently a regular feature.

There were even Gatsby dance classes that morning. The passengers were mostly Australian although I heard a New Zealand accent from time to time. With Cairns being renowned as the gateway to the tropical rainforests and the Great Barrier Reef, the day excursions offered would have been exceptionally interesting for any overseas and interstate visitors. Bill and I had been to Cairns two or three times over the years and we remembered it as having a lovely country town feeling but today it is more sophisticated and while not being a fast-moving city it certainly has a buzz to it. We took a taxi to the Esplanade and The Pier Marketplace where we found designer boutiques offering the latest in fashion. Probably some of the best buys however were in Australian beach and casual wear. (I had promised Bill I wouldn’t shop this cruise but as I pointed out to him as we struggled back to the ship laden down with shopping bags, the prices were too good not to snap up a few specials.) It was a leisurely two-day cruise back to Brisbane in smooth seas and bright sunshine convincing us that we must take more of these short breaks – especially by ship.

AT THE WHEEL

Colour fast Chris Nixon gets behind the wheel of the new Lamborghini Huracan LP580-2 coupe.

A LAMBORGHINI sports car is a traffic-stopper wherever it goes. Slightly less famous or popular than its Italian supercar counterpart Ferrari, the Lamborghini compensates by being outrageous to the eyes and ears. Traditionally, Ferraris are red: Lamborghinis are anything but. How about metallic orange or Kermit-green, with matching upholstery? Go-fast colours complement raucous performance. But where can it be used? A closed track is the only safe – or legal – place. And so I find myself at Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit in Victoria amid a technicolour pack of Lamborghini’s latest, the Huracan LP580-2 coupe. There’s no traffic or police, fewer things to hit and wide-open spaces to let the car with the raging bull badge rampage. And there’s also a privileged group of eager drivers, guests of automobili Lamborghini’s Esperienza program.

90

Invitations to events such as this are how the other half drives when they’re Lamborghini owners (or journalists). Esperienza is a travelling troupe comprising dedicated cars, driver-tutors, technicians and corporate hosts. It visits numerous Asia Pacific countries, including China, Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines, giving owners and prospective buyers an experience most car lovers only dream about. It’s a fair bet several Aussies would have parted with deposits for the Huracan LP580-2 after a few eye-widening laps behind the wheel at Phillip Island. I would have, if I could have. The Huracan is $378,900, although the maker has tried hard to make it relatively affordable by changing the basic mechanical specification. Instead of all-wheel drive it’s two-wheel drive and the 5.2 litre V10 engine is de-tuned slightly to an output of 426 kiloWatts.

But the LP580-2 is far, far from being about just a cheaper Lamborghini. What the maker has done with a 33 kg weight saving from deleting drive to the front wheels is produce a better Lamborghini for most occasions. The all-wheel drive Huracan LP610-4 ultimately will hang on better in corners and accelerate slightly faster, but the LP580-2 delivers crisper, swifter responses to every command of the driver. In short, it’s fun to drive. And surprisingly easy. This is a full-blown, 320 kmh supercar, yet it would be docile, uncomplicated and comfortable to drive around town every day. There’s ample accommodation, access that won’t wreck your back, an adequate features list and space in the nose for weekend luggage. Take it out of town on a winding road, or preferably, to a playground like Phillip Island, and the baby Lambo is free to reveal its true character.

The engine emits a distinctive 10-cylinder wail as it climbs through seven gears in the double-clutch transmission, which shifts with speed and precision. The engine is one of the few supercar powerplants still to do without a turbocharger. Porsche, Ferrari and McLaren have ‘succumbed’, but the Lambo V10 sticks with tradition. The electric-serve steering, criticised by some, is to my liking and allows the car to be pointed exactly where you want it while sending clear messages back through the wheel about the amount of grip under the tyres. The Huracan flatters with cornering talent way beyond most drivers’, but it’s not so tame as to be boring. A switch on the steering wheel operates the Strada (street), Sport and Corsa (race) traction modes, the last two progressively de-coupling the electronic nanny-aids to allow the rear end to slide as the Lamborghini engineers intended. This car is built for fun, not mere transport. Reducing the weight compensates for its lower power with greater agility. It substitutes thrills for ultimate performance. And it’s cheaper. And gorgeous. What’s not to like?

Game-changer The Bentley Bentayga sets the benchmark for super-luxury SUVs.

WORDS CHRIS NIXON

TRADITIONALISTS should not be shocked that Bentley has joined the throng and built an SUV. But they might be surprised the company has done it so well. It’s well-justified in claiming to be the fastest, most powerful, most luxurious and most exclusive SUV in the world. The Bentley Bentayga may be the first superluxury SUV, but for precedents look no further than its Volkswagen Group stablemate, the Porsche Cayenne. A Porsche off-roader? Who would have thought when it was introduced in 2002 that it would become the sport car brand’s most successful model? The Bentayga is likely to do the same for Bentley, as it offers luxury, high performance and versatility in a package arguably more usable than a Continental, Flying Spur or Mulsanne. Anecdotal evidence of its appeal: When I collected the Bentayga for this test-drive not long after its launch, the Brisbane dealership said it had sold 10 vehicles already. On my return 24 hours later, the number had increased to 12.

92

Opinions are divided about whether the Bentayga looks like a $432,600 SUV. Undoubtedly it has a strong road presence and there’s no denying the car’s opulent comfort or technical prowess. With a 6.0 litre, W12-cylinder engine boosted by two turbochargers, the Bentley churns out 447 kiloWatts of power and 900 Newtonmetres of torque. More than capable of towing a couple of equine thoroughbreds to polo. Measured performance is 0-100 kmh in 4.1 seconds and top speed of 301 kmh. From behind the wheel the feeling is immense as this 2.4 tonne wagon is hurled down the road like an Airbus on take-off. Power is delivered through an eight-speed automatic gearbox, all-wheel drive and massive 22-inch wheels. It’s said to be a genuine offroader, should the owner dare to muddy its boots, with good ground clearance, eight drive modes to handle different surface conditions and terrain, active roll control and several other technical aids. On-road, there’s active and predictive cruise control, traffic sign recognition, rear

traffic crossing warning, head-up information display, idle stop-start, free-wheel coasting and all-round cameras. Inside is pure handcrafted Bentley. Quilted leather seats and door linings, deep-pile carpets, wood veneer and abundant polished and knurled metal controls. The quality of finish is supreme, but in the test model I couldn’t help thinking a touch too much bling was on display. The Bentley Bentayga is formidable to drive. It’s not difficult, but it’s big and brutally fast and the anxiety about handling something so finely built and so expensive takes adjustment. High-speed cornering ability on-highway is surprisingly competent and ride comfort never less than brilliant in any conditions. The Bentayga is a game-changer for one of the world’s oldest luxury car makers and sets a trend due to be followed by Rolls-Royce, Lamborghini, Aston Martin and probably even Ferrari. There’s no point in questioning whether a need exists for a 300 kmh luxury off-roader, as I expect sales will take off faster than a speeding Bentayga.

Tips to buying property with confidence PURCHASING A HOME can be an exciting yet daunting experience. Many will spend more time worrying about the negatives, than seizing a great opportunity. Here is a list of things that can help to increase buyer confidence: Start with your wish list. Write down a list of things that are important to you. Consider factors like proximity to work, family and friends. This will help you to narrow down your search and know what you’re looking for. Keep properties clear in your head. Make the most of your inspection time at each property by taking detailed notes and photos if permitted. Be sure to look past the presentation and focus on the priorities on your wish list. Remember to listen for traffic noise and observe the entry and exit to the property. Keep your cards close to your chest. If your emotional attachment to the home is obvious it will work against you because the agent will expect you to be more negotiable. You can ask questions

PROPERTY MARKET UPDATE WRITTEN BY ANGELA TRZ’AN CEO Master Wealth Coach

and let the agent know you are interested, but use your poker face. Stick to your price range. It can be tempting to look above your price range out of curiosity but be aware that you may then be dissatisfied with the homes you can afford. Avoid paying too much. Try to separate your practical, lifestyle and emotional requirements in a home. Be careful not to pay too much for elements which may not have broad appeal to future buyers when you eventually sell the house. Research the local market online. Consider obtaining property value reports for suburbs you are interested in. Get a professional building and pest inspection. Your own inspection will probably focus on the positive aspects of the property.

A building inspector’s job is to look for negatives. This can arm you with knowledge about the likely cost to rectify problems and be used as bargaining power in price negotiations. Negotiate based on facts. Always start low and use your research. Key negotiating points include: current property values in the area, the amount of time similar properties have been on the market, competitive properties and repairs needed etc. Don’t be surprised if you experience some buyer’s remorse. No home is perfect and there could be some repairs required. You’ll never know if you could have negotiated an even better deal. Will these things matter in the long term? Probably not. It is more likely that you will look back in a few years time pleased that you have done well repaying your mortgage, benefiting from capital growth and now have enough equity in your home to invest or renovate.

PROPERTY PREVIEW

European Grandeur ‘Appassionata’ is an impressive estate located just 15 minutes from Brisbane’s CBD.

INSPIRED BY OSCAR DE LA RENTA’S famous Italian villa, and located high on a ridge known as ‘Millionaire’s Row’ at Pullenvale, ‘Appassionata’ takes in the vistas of the surrounding, gently rolling countryside and across to Brisbane’s distant cityscape. Translated as ’with passion’, ‘Appassionata’ was lovingly built with attention to detail in homage to the late, great Italian designer Oscar De La Renta’s vision. As you approach the estate along a graceful Cyprus-lined driveway, before entering through the elegant iron gates, it is hard to imagine a more dramatic setting that marries classical European style and Australia’s natural beauty. The current owner has incorporated a range of bespoke design details to achieve an overall effect of contemporary grandeur. “To celebrate the Italian inspiration, we had the plaque for ‘Appassionata’ that is set in stone pillars made in Florence,” she explains. “From the outset, the home was passionately designed and we used a first class build to achieve some of the details such as the stunning domed ceilings,” she adds.

96

Entering into the main foyer of the home, the parquetry flooring, crystal chandeliers and the classical, twin Italian staircases sweeping up to the mezzanine floor all work to set the grand tone. The current owners are enthusiastic art collectors and have ensured that there is ample opportunity within the house to prominently display artworks. All fittings are of the finest quality, with the French windows beautifully finished with bevelled edging and the elegant awnings designed to perfectly complement the exterior of the home. In total, this sumptuous and substantial home includes two grand master bedroom suites, another four king-sized bedrooms, an executive media room and library, plus a swathe of quality finishes such as marble and sandstone throughout. “The secret to ‘Appassionata’ is that it is as livable as it is impressive,” says Sotheby’s International Realty Queensland agent, Julie Vines. Designed for the ultimate in impressive entertaining, the property’s freestanding Summer House overlooks the pool and captures the stunning rural views across to the city skyline.

“As well, there is a large four-car garage, a huge space,” explains the owner. “This could be used for a myriad of purposes, for hobbies, a business or converted into living space, there is no impediment.” ‘Appassionata’ is set on a total of three immaculate acres of formal manicured gardens, featuring expansive lawns and an orchard. This impressive estate’s garden adds the final touch of classical European ambience. “People imagine we live out in the sticks, yet they are amazed we are only 15 minutes from Brisbane’s CBD and 20 minutes to the airport. It’s quite extraordinary to have this space and this setting – and yet still be so close to everything.”

Unique Queenslander Set high on Hamilton Hill, this classic Queenslander has been lovingly restored and refurbished.

WHO WOULD EXPECT to find a fully-automated, sound-proofed professional bowling alley in the basement? Or imagine there would be an undercover 25m two-lane swimming pool, a steam room and gymnasium, plus a dedicated wine tasting and banquet hall in a pre-war Queenslander? These attributes are rarely found in a centuryold Brisbane home but this historically important Queenslander set high on Hamilton Hill is unique in every aspect. Owner and developer Frank Mallan grew up in Brisbane’s Hamilton, where from a young boy he had coveted the iconic home. “I’ve always loved this classic Queenslander and its prime location, so when it came up for sale in 2008, I just knew I had to buy it,” he said. While Frank planned to dramatically improve and extend the humble home, pre-war Queenslanders are stringently protected due to their historic value.

Renowned Queensland designer Greg Harris was engaged to assist with the latest construction techniques and innovative design solutions that would work in harmony with the classic Queensland architecture, while Frank’s team of designers, craftsmen and builders shared a dedication to maintain the essence of the grand old property. “Once the basement level was excavated, requiring moving the home from its original site, then back again, many of the recreational features located on the lower level were installed, much to my children’s delight,” Frank said. “The carefully planned and perfectly executed build took two years of team dedication, resulting in a stunning sevenbedroom family home that skillfully weaves every conceivable contemporary feature into this historic Queenslander,” explains Sotheby’s International Realty Queensland agent, Julie Vines.

Built and designed over a total of three levels, this grand home now offers unparalleled contemporary features such as an internal elevator, an underground water filtration system and a full size floodlit, championship tennis court. “As well there are some significant historic features added that contribute to the grandeur of this home,” Julie said. “Some of these additions include the entry hall’s exquisite parquetry flooring and the elegant antique Argentinian doors.” With seven bedrooms, eight bathrooms, a formal living and dining room, plus a sensational chef’s kitchen, this historic Queenslander now boasts magnificent views of the Brisbane River and across to Moreton Island from almost every living room and the covered decks. COVE LIVING

Man of vision Ridong Chairman and Jewel visionary Mr Riyu Li cites generosity and kindness as the measure of success.

IF YOU’RE AT SKY RESTAURANT at Marina Mirage on any given weekday, chances are you’ll run into Mr Riyu Li, the charismatic visionary behind the $1billion+ Jewel development, now in construction on the Surfers Paradise beachfront. The Chairman of China’s influential Ridong Group spends many an evening seated at his favourite spot overlooking the water while chatting with the staff, who have all become quite accustomed to him bringing along his own seafood for the chef to cook – caught while fishing at his property at Tallebudgera. “They do this for me at Aussie China Kitchen too and I am very grateful. And the chef at Sky is from the same province as me, so it is always lovely to talk about our times there,” Chairman Li says. It’s not difficult to see why the chefs are so accommodating after meeting the fun-loving property developer, whose kind nature has earned him a reputation for being ‘the little man with the big heart’. “When I was a very young man in my first job working in a glass factory it was only a very small salary, and people did not have much money,” Chairman Li says.

104

“For me it’s most important to be generous and take care of those you love, but I soon realised that if I wanted to keep shouting dinner, my salary wouldn’t support that.” It’s hard to keep step with the super-fit 61-year-old, who takes us on a grand tour of his sprawling Tallebudgera estate, complete with a trek over to see the more than 300 rose bushes he’s just finished planting, along with his flourishing citrus trees, fragrant Jasmine bushes and immaculately manicured lawns – with his translator working overtime as he regales us with stories of his youth. “When you got married at that time, you gave a lot to the woman’s family to show that you were sincere in wanting to marry her, but I questioned how I could be generous to others, and also save enough for myself to have a wife and a home,” he says. The young Riyu Li decided to start what would be the first of many businesses, selling vegetables, eggs and clothing to local buyers. But it was his love for nature that eventually drew Chairman Li to the Gold Coast decades later, as it reminded him of his home city of Zhuhai, on the southern coast of Guangdong province.

“It was love at first sight, like when a boy and girl fall in love. I believe the countryside, the water, the native forests – it is the most beautiful city in the world. And in Australia there is also a very high standard of law, and it is very good for business, close to China and on the same time zone.” He spotted the 1.13 hectare, 130-metre wide beachfront site that would become home to Jewel while walking on the beach in 2010, at the lowest point in the post-GFC market. While it was not for sale at the time, he recognised its future potential for a project that would be second-tonone, and set about tracking down its owner before snapping it up for just over $80million. A global competition to find the perfect architectural concept meant that Florida-based architect Chad Oppenheim was able to team up with Gold Coast-based DBI Design Director Barry Lee to create the plans for the avant-garde Jewel towers, based on three ancient quartz crystals found in the region – a plan Chairman Li believes will be an exquisite fit for the spectacular location. But it wasn’t until 2014 that Jewel really ramped up, when the Australia Week tourism investment roundtable in Shanghai fortuitously brought Chairman Li together with the 20th

richest man in the world, Mr Wang Jianlin – founder of the world’s largest commercial property company, the Dalian Wanda Group. Also 61, China’s most influential billionaire was instantly intrigued, and formed a joint venture partnership with the Ridong Group shortly after. “There is an old Chinese saying that man plans but God decides, and I believe that God kept this very special site for something remarkable.” With Jewel’s construction schedule perfectly on track under Australian construction company Brookfield Multiplex, Chairman Li has this year been able to turn his sights toward his other great love – his extraordinary collection of wood and root carvings and sculptures, which he’s been commissioning for decades. Boasting more than 20,000 pieces – the majority carved from fossilised timber more than 10,000 years old – Chairman Li is confident he has the biggest and most extensive collection in the world. Including ornate furniture, mythical creatures and colossal animals, right through to full-scale continuous storytelling sculptures, some of his pieces are more than two storeys high. “My father was a woodworker, so my love for the grain, the knots in the wood, it has always been with me from my childhood,” Chairman Li says. “It is very important that an artist understands that less

YEARS

than 30 per cent of a piece is about the artist’s vision because they must work with the piece to simply enhance its unique beauty and personality. “You must have 70 per cent of a piece that is left with its unique shape and its grain, and must simply polish it and make it more beautiful. You must never try and change its natural story, and must always respect its natural beauty.” For Chairman Li, choosing a favourite piece was easy. The majestic Turkmenistan Akhal-Teke stallion stands 2.7 metres tall and 4.2 metres wide, and was carved from a single piece of Red Rosewood from Myanmar. It won China’s highest honour for wood carving at a competition in 2015. “I am born in 1955 which is the year of the goat, however the wood horse is good luck for my year in the Chinese zodiac, so this piece is good luck and will bring reward. “I never need to source timber because people in the timber or furniture industries all over the world know what I look for, and they come to me when they come across very unusual or extra-large trunks or roots. They know me.” Until recently the vast majority of this mammoth collection has remained in storage in China, protectively wrapped in warehouses with its beauty hidden from the world. However with assistance from the Chinese government, Chairman Li secured a site in his home town of Zhuhai to purpose-build a museum, where stage one, at 20,000 square metres and housing 1,000 pieces, has just opened to the public. “My dream is that one day we will expand this site to house the entire collection – all 20,000 pieces for everyone to enjoy.” Except, though, for the one that started it all. “It is a small carved sign that reads ‘Yunqi’, the Chinese word for ‘luck’, and all these years later, it still sits on my desk in my Zhuhai office.” (With special thanks to Chairman Li’s interpreter, Sophia Pei.)

Good plan Unique Homes have created a stunning luxury design for a small block.

WORDS CHARLES DICKSON PHOTOGRAPHY MARK BURGIN

WITH AN INCREASING trend to smaller blocks in residential subdivisions and a rapid rise in the number of larger existing blocks being divided into two smaller parcels of land, this innovative 4 bedroom, 2-storey display home from Unique Homes effectively demonstrates how luxury living can be achieved on smaller block sizes. Boasting over 393 sq metres of living space, the light-filled home sits comfortably on a 12.5 metre x 30 metre site. Internally, the feeling of spaciousness is enhanced by incorporating clear sight lines from the front doorway to the open-plan living areas at the rear.

106

A void above the entry and hallway, combined with the use of high quality porcelain floor tiles, further increases the feeling of space, overcoming the dark, tunnel effect so often encountered in terrace-style homes. An open tread timber and glass staircase adds to the sense of style and openness. A sizeable home office/study is located near the front door. From here, double sliding glass doors open to a private courtyard where client meetings could take place without encroaching on the home’s main living areas. A comfortable media room is positioned immediately behind the double garage.

Throughout the day, large sliding windows and double doors f lood this room and the staircase with light while at night the windows can be closed off with heavy curtains. The rear of the home’s ground floor incorporates a truly luxurious galley kitchen complete with high-end cooking facilities, tapwear and fittings. Black marble bench tops provide a stunning contrast with the gloss white cabinetry. Bench height windows increase the feeling of light and space while retaining an element of privacy from nearby neighbours. >>

From the kitchen, a sliding door opens to reveal a huge walk-in pantry. A further sliding door leads through to a practical laundry and linen store. The north-facing open plan lounge and dining areas give ready access to the kitchen, making entertaining a breeze. Large glass doors lead out to an alfresco entertaining deck, sensibly located beneath the master bedroom for added shade protection from the summer heat. A ground floor powder room is centrally positioned between the lounge room and stairwell. Upstairs, the staircase opens to reveal an additional lounge area. A huge master bedroom is accompanied by a luxurious en-suite complete

108

with free standing bath, double vanity, double shower recess and separate toilet. A very spacious his and hers walk-in fitted wardrobe is also accessed from the master bedroom. Three further bedrooms, each capable of accommodating double beds are serviced by a separate bathroom. Jim Taylor, who has headed up Unique Homes for over 30 years, says this display home amply demonstrates how a luxurious lifestyle can be enjoyed by families or empty-nesters seeking the advantages of smaller, lowmaintenance waterfront and suburban blocks of land.

A pool, outdoor kitchen and boat pontoon could easily be incorporated where the land area permits. Jim specialises in building custom-designed luxury homes. Clients can avail themselves of the company’s complimentary home and interior decorating design services to develop a floor plan perfectly suited to their individual needs. Flower power The Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers is the longest-running floral event of its kind in Australia.

THE BRAINCHILD OF ESSEX TAIT and the Toowoomba Chamber of Commerce back in 1949, the Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers was introduced as a way for the region to use their ‘Garden City’ reputation to promote increased economic activity following the recent hardships of war. The inaugural Carnival commenced with a street procession that stretched three miles in length. Led by a bullock team and watched by a crowd estimated to be 50,000 strong, the Parade was a resounding success. Fast forward to 2016 and the 67th Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers will showcase more than 50 unique experiences including internationally acclaimed musical acts, award-winning parks, some of the best food and wine to be found in Southern Queensland and a multitude of cultural adventures. “With 67 years of floral magic under its belt, the Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers continues to build audiences and extend programming parameters, both important milestones as a leading event for locals and visitors alike,” said Toowoomba Region Mayor Paul Antonio. “This year’s floral program is one of the best, promising breathtaking displays of botanic brilliance across floral exhibits, fresh flower markets, glorious garden tours, floristry competitions and more.”

112

In a major coup, the 2016 event will host three of Australia’s leading names in floral design: Charlie Albone, Annita Bokobli and Bart Hassam. WA-based Annita Bokobli is the 2016 Interflora Australia Cup winner, the country’s most prestigious award for individual floral designers; landscape designer and Selling Houses Australia presenter Charlie Albone is a Chelsea Flower Garden Show winner and inspiring design leader; Brisbane-based Bart Hassam is a fourtime Australian Interflora Florist of the year and Intercontinental Asia Cup winner who has been applauded all over the world for his floral design skills. All three will create floral installations and take part in a range of events. The Grand Central Floral Parade remains firmly at the heart of this world-class celebration and once again will bring the city to a standstill on Saturday when more than 100,000 people line the streets. Musically, a star-studded lineup of Australian talent is set to perform over three days at the Ergon Energy Flower, Food and Wine Festival. The Whitlams will play alongside the Toowoomba Concert Orchestra in what will be a spectacular concert event, while internationally-acclaimed singer-songwriter Tim Finn, acclaimed songstress Katie Noonan and a rollcall of musical greats such as Birds of Tokyo, Montaigne, Emma Louise and the Models will also take to the stage.

One of the most popular chefs in the country, Miguel Maestre, will lend his acclaimed blend of culinary flavour and personality to the Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers this year, supported by a range of local chefs and quality regional produce. The city’s parks will also take centrestage in a program of hosted walking tours and visits – Laurel Bank Park, Queens Park, Picnic Point and Spring Bluff will all be carefully curated into sensational Spring flower displays, while the myriad of community floral events add to the blanket of colour that covers the city during the Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers. In a first for the city and for Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers, a new welcoming program called Carnival Greeters will take place for the 10 days. More than 50 Carnival Greeters will be on hand throughout the city, to guide visitors and locals alike on walks and tours and to offer colourful insights into the Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers experience. Run over ten breathtaking days from 16 - 25 September, the 2016 Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers promises a program of headliners across music, food, wine, floral art and gardening that is testament to its position as one of the country’s most acclaimed special events.

VIRGO 24 Aug – 23 Sept

CAPRICORN 23 Dec – 20 Jan

TAURUS 21 Apr – 21 May

LIBRA 24 Sept – 23 Oct

AQUARIUS 21 Jan – 19 Feb

The Aquarius full moon on August 18 signals a fresh phase, especially where your potential, status and self-esteem are concerned. Over the next few months, your values and where you place your attention will change in line with fresh interests, people you meet and places you go. You may reconsider your work, and its merits, both for yourself and others. Choose wisely.

GEMINI 22 May – 21 Jun

In August, you’ll enjoy feeling more empowered to make changes at work, health-wise and within your daily routine, so that your timetable better reflects your needs and, in September, your desires, strengths – and weaknesses will come to the forefront. Expect the unexpected midSeptember. To do: build resilience and trust in your own ability to manifest abundance in your life.

SCORPIO 24 Oct – 22 Nov

PISCES 20 Feb – 20 Mar

CANCER 22 Jun – 23 Jul

SAGITTARIUS 23 Nov – 22 Dec

ARIES 21 Mar – 20 Apr

LEO 24 Jul – 23 Aug

The September eclipses will be across your personal and business partnerships, making August the ideal time to get your plans and ideas in order, ready for changes to come. Events over the next two months will point out where you’ve been idealistic; and where your more practical plans can take over the reins. Singles: September could be a turnaround month, so ensure you mingle!

You’ll feel motivated to take proactive steps financially and at work and it’ll be hard to ignore the sense, after mid-August, that your mojo has finally returned. Those areas that have been on the backburner in life will spring back into action. The eclipses in September will cement changes within family, finances and duties, so be prepared to make decisive choices in August.

The new moon on August 3 will be ideal for considering which of your activities really do merit your considerable talents and attention – and then go for it! Mars in your sign for the predominant part of the next two months will put a spring back in your step and once Saturn begins to power up in your sign, there will be no stopping your brilliance in late August and September.

You’ll begin to feel increasingly at ease over the next two months and this will give you a real boost in energy, not only in your work and bigger-picture plans, but also within the groups, both social and networking, that you feel comfortable in. A change in the way you share chores, space or duties will ask that you consider a fresh way to approach those you interact with.

Your more idealistic viewpoints may be challenged over the next few months, especially as the eclipses in September will highlight your status, health, work and relationships. Your status will not escape scrutiny (by yourself and by others, especially where work is concerned). Believe in spontaneous improvement, and it will happen, but you must avoid overt self-criticism.

September’s eclipses will be across your work and health sectors, suggesting considerable developments in either – or both – areas. It’s a great time in August therefore to prepare for change, especially as you may find yourself flying by your coat tails in September. Believe in your own abilities, and you will be pleasantly surprised by the attention you attract.

sudoku Hard

A fresh approach to someone close and to duties or chores you share will fuel positive developments in your life. You may feel more willing to make changes at home and at work in August, sensing a changing tide already in your circumstances. September’s events will be hard to ignore, as your hard work will come to a culmination or prompt a decision in your personal life.

Generally known to be outgoing and adaptable, you are also more likely to take a risk where others fear to tread. Your upbeat progress over the next two months will prompt you to make changes financially or in your personal life, and yet the devil really is in the details now, and the more you focus on these, the better for you. It’s all change in September: be prepared.

You may be inclined to look at life from an entirely new angle over coming months, and there is nothing amiss in this; life will open your eyes to new options, and these may be as unexpected as they are attractive. A fresh financial opportunity will appeal, and the details will merit more care than cause for concern. It’s time to admit your duties; and to care even more.

The Leo new moon on August 3rd promises to kick-start your life, and not only your enjoyment of life, but also your relationships, especially if they have been in the doldrums or have presented more work than usual. The full moon on August 18th will bring a more innovative and spontaneous chapter into your love life, as long as you’re realistic throughout September.
