Back on track Formula 1 driver turned fashion force: meet star driver and Rolex Testimonee Mark Webber.
WORDS MICHAEL HARVEY / THE TELEGRAPH / THE INTERVIEW PEOPLE
A WEEK BEFORE the 2017 British Grand Prix, retired Formula 1 driver Mark Webber climbed into a racing car for the first time in seven months. Not to actually race the car, mind you, merely to ‘demonstrate’ Porsche’s Le Mans winning 919. How did the famously handsome Australian, notable as much for his looks and refusal to take any stick from his not-always-easy teammates his raw talent, feel For subscriptions please as callfor+61 5577 9499 about getting back to something that has been his life for the past 22 years? “To be perfectly honest mate, it reminded me why I’m happy to be out,” he says bluntly with just a flash of a smile. Mark was at Silverstone as part of his new role as Rolex Testimonee – a title the luxury watch brand and official timepiece of F1 bestow on the stars of the sport. But he’s also busy working on his own new business,

an active sportswear brand named after his social media handle ‘Aussie Grit Apparel’. >>

Aussie Grit launches in December. It’s designed for those who prefer to take the exercise away from the gym. “I’ve always been an outdoor man,” says Mark, who famously started the 2009 F1 season with steel pins in his leg from a mountain biking accident. “I love nature; love being in the backcountry and being Australian that’s obviously synonymous with us. I’ve always loved my mountain biking, always loved my running and I thought, okay I’ve got a wardrobe full of different types of kit from so many different brands I figured I want to drop on to something we can do ourselves.” He is clearly enjoying the new challenge. “It’s great for my mind. We’ve got a really exciting young design team in Australia and it’s coming together well. I’m visiting the factories looking at the stitch lines, looking at the bondings… motorsport learnings you know.” Like most inside the F1 paddock, Webber is obsessed with detail.
Unlike most, the obsession hasn’t quite obscured the humanity behind it. He didn’t need data to tell him it was time to get out of F1. He points out that he set the fastest lap in his last F1 race in Brazil in 2013, finishing second and sharing the podium with Vettel and Fernando Alonso who by then had six world titles between them. “The share price was sensational at that race …” he says. But aside from such wistfulness, there’s little looking back. Indeed, Mark was happy to admit publicly that aged 40, he no longer quite had it in him. That’s rare in racing, where ego is measured to three decimal places. But it’s what defined the self-styled ‘Country Boy’ with the ‘Aussie Grit’, and helped him achieve nine F1 career wins, as well as three third-place finishes in the F1 championship and scooping the 2015 World Endurance Championship.
While you’ll likely still see him at the Australian and British Grand Prix, Mark no longer attends every race. “Australia is basically a minute-by-minute schedule with a lot of TV work,” he explains. “I also do a lot of work with Rolex. As title sponsors, Melbourne and the Silverstone are the key events for Rolex and it’s a great opportunity to catch up and talk about motorsport at this level – the pinnacle obviously.” While a live race will usually see him in front of the TV, if there’s tennis or football or rugby on during a practice session, then racing gets regulated. Mark had known at the start of the 2013 season it was to be his last. “I got to a point where certain sections of my job were getting a little more difficult. In terms of principles and standards I look to get the best out of everyone I work with, so if you’re the guy looking at your clock thinking maybe I can go home early tonight then maybe that’s the first sign?” >>

He also admits that the accidents began to prey on him. He’s had three ‘big ones’ in his career; a crash at Le Mans with Mercedes, after F1 with Porsche, and in June 2010, right in the middle of his time with Red Bull when he pointed his RB6 at the sky during the Valencia race, somersaulting before sliding into the barriers at close to 190mph. It’s no exaggeration to say he was lucky to survive. He admits counselling from Jackie Stewart – Rolex’s original ‘Testimonee’ in F1 back in 1968 – was a huge help at the time. “First you have to understand why; your fault, mechanical failure? What can you do next time and so on. It’s tougher on the people around you probably. We are all quite unique individuals in terms of being able to park accidents like that but yes, there is a bit of baggage.
“And it get’s sticky, especially later on in life, when you get towards your forties. At 25 you see things totally, totally differently. You are absolutely fearless, selfish too. The consequences are just not on the radar.” It’s clear Mark’s in a reflective mood. “Naivety is a great thing, as it means you don’t ask whether this is a healthy thing to pursue. You have that drive and that passion to follow it because you don’t know how hard it’s going to be,” he says. A philosophy that might well apply to his new clothing venture, too.

ICONIC BRANDS
Style, quality, value Founded in Italy in the 1950s, Natuzzi continues to set the benchmark for quality furniture design and workmanship.
Latest designs from Natuzzi WORDS SUSAN LANG-LEMCKERT
NATUZZI – Italy’s largest furniture manufacturer and global leader in the sector – has enjoyed more success than any other Italian furniture company. And its founder, Pasquale Natuzzi, has been lauded worldwide. But that phenomenal success didn’t just happen – it was the culmination of many, many years spent honing and enhancing the craft of furniture design and manufacture, and of finding opportunities even in adversity. The son of a cabinetmaker, young Pasquale had an inherent eye for quality craftsmanship and a strong work ethic that saw him put together his first solo project when aged only 16 and still apprenticed to a local furniture maker. His natural flair for design, dedication to quality and desire to push boundaries led him to open his own furniture manufacturing workshop in Puglia three years later where, initially, every piece was entirely hand made under Pasquale’s expert eye. In another three years he was on the move again – this time relocating his workshop to Matera, his hometown, where his growing renown for style and excellence soon saw production surge to 2,500 pieces per year. When production doubled again over the next 12 months and continued growing year upon year, it seemed nothing could go wrong – until August 1973, when the factory burned to the ground.
30
But Pasquale was resilient, not only rebuilding the factory by the end of the year, but also taking this restart as an opportunity to pursue new avenues of business. Choosing to specialise in contemporary designs finished in top-quality leather, Pasquale filled a wide but hitherto unfilled market niche, and sales of Natuzzi pieces took off across Europe and also in Canada. A trip to New York inspired Pasquale to launch Natuzzi into the lucrative American market – where he enjoyed the same phenomenal success as before, but on a larger scale. The Natuzzi model – style, quality, value – was a winner with discerning clients everywhere and, by the end of the 1980s, one in every five pieces of leather furniture sold in the United States was a Natuzzi. As the Natuzzi juggernaut continued, suppliers such as tanneries, foam block factories and cushion plants set up production near the brand’s corporate headquarters in a quest to secure supply contracts. Seizing yet another opportunity, Pasquale then bought out these upline suppliers to ensure absolute quality control. By the mid-1990s, the company was producing virtually all of the raw materials for its own finished products. Pasquale Natuzzi’s business model proved so successful that a ‘sofa triangle’ was formed
between Santeramo, Matera and Altamura, and he was affectionately dubbed ‘the king of sofas’. One former employee’s admiration for Pasquale’s achievements was such that she likened his endeavours in discovering new world markets for furniture entrepreneurs to those of Christopher Columbus centuries before. Aside from the design and manufacture of an item of furniture, taking leather from tannery to furniture showroom was, and is, a labour-intensive process that accounts for about three-quarters of the cost of each Natuzzi piece. This point was not lost on Pasquale, who understood the importance of taking good care of his employees, or ‘collabatori’ – co-workers, who in return remained committed to the company and to delivering the standards of excellence Natuzzi had become renowned for. Indeed, Pasquale’s dedication to training initiatives for Natuzzi workers, technicians and managers over the years, was recognised by the University of Bari in 2001 with the awarding of an Honorary Degree in Education Science. Ten years later, his lifelong devotion to maintaining positive employee relations was also acknowledged by the League Against Defamation with the Lifetime Achievement Award for improving relations between partners, salespersons and employees. >>

Both awards are apt reflections of the Natuzzi corporate values of authentic quality and a strong commitment to research, social responsibility and environmental sustainability that the Group has practised throughout its history. Ever the innovator, the Natuzzi Group has maintained its traditional craftsmanship while embracing the latest technology not only in their designs and factories, but also in their business operations. Today, the product range extends beyond sofas, chairs and beds, to furnishings, wall units, rugs, accessories, linen, lamps, clocks, mirrors and more – all distinctly Natuzzi – and there are more than 1,200 points of sale worldwide. What sets the Natuzzi Italia brand apart from any other furniture destination, is its distinctive and inimitable harmonious coordination of room settings and its made-in-Italy value for money offering. And Pasquale, who is still known as the heart and the engine of Natuzzi and as one of the most important entrepreneurs in the history of Southern Italy, remains actively involved in the daily running of the Natuzzi Group. In just a handful of decades Pasquale has watched his entrepreneurial vision evolve from cottage industry to global empire and an instantlyrecognisable mononym, and has seen it become renowned as one of the most outstanding successes of ‘the Italian [furniture] invasion’. So while it may have been the British Invasion of the 1960s that got the world onto their feet, it was the Italian Invasion of the 1980s – spearheaded by Pasquale Natuzzi – that got them sitting down again, and in exquisite style and comfort.

WHEN BRISBANE FASHION MONTH (BFM) kicks off for its second year in October, the increased program will see more Queenslandiconic resortwear on the runway, more opportunity for emerging creatives, and a greater focus on networking and education. These pillars of showcasing local fashion, education and opportunity are key motivators for Carly Vidal-Wallace, director of Brisbane Fashion Month presented by Wintergarden. “It was really important for us when planning this second year of BFM to come out even stronger with opportunities for designers to show their resort collections, and our guests to be inspired by the incredible swim and lifestyle labels
“Our Finale party will showcase more Queensland designer collections, including men’s and womenswear, as well as the results of a collaboration we’ve undertaken with Robert Henderson, a talented artist whose work reflects his heritage as a first nations Wiradjuri man,” Carly said. More than a runway series however, Brisbane Fashion Month is an event for industry. “Perhaps what I’m most proud of and excited about this year is the Blogging, Fashion, Media Business Workshop day on 14 October,” says Carly. “We have an incredible line-up of guest speakers across media, PR and business that will
we have to offer,” Carly explains. The Resort show, at the Sofitel hotel’s iconic Soiree Deck on 18 October, and the Finale on 25 October, will be the highlights amid a monthlong series of events that Brisbane Fashion Month has on offer this year.
share their knowledge and stories with our guests to get them geared up for their best year yet.” Sarah Timmermann, Telstra award-winning creator of Beginning Boutique, James Lillis of street label Black Milk, and bloggers Aicha Robertson from The Fashion Heist and Yelena
Fairfax of Husskie (Sydney) will take to the stage, along with speakers from the Commonwealth Bank and Telstra to offer business tools and advice. Guests will also hear from Liz Golding, whose styling career in Brisbane spans decades, as well as Fashion Weekly’s Stacey O’Keeffe, whose business is making waves in the digital world. FASHION MONTH INDUSTRY EXPERTS SHARE THEIR TOP THREE TIPS FOR SUCCESS arah Timmermann, Beginning Boutique. S How to build a brand: • You have to know what you need to do to truly make a difference in your business. This means constantly researching current trends within your industry, from fashion to technology to who the latest ‘icon’ is in your customer’s mind. You need to constantly work at this, as the realm of fashion is constantly changing. • Take all you know about the evolution of your brand and apply it to yourself. Your business cannot thrive if you are stuck in old ways and habits. • Try everything you believe will work, measure and record how it goes and pivot quickly if it fails. If a plan doesn’t quite have the desired effect you have set out to achieve, then no harm done, but if they do – you’ll be forever grateful you took the leap of faith.
Tri-coloured gold diamond pendant
ames Lillis, Black Milk. J How to build a fashion following: • Be patient. In the early days communities are built by addition, not multiplication. • Content is king, attention is valuable and you have to earn it the hard way. • Don’t get too attached – be more focused on the reason people are following you, not the fact they are following you. iz Golding, stylist. L How to get started in fashion: • Immerse yourself in your industry. Get to know the movers and shakers, the start-ups and want-to-be’s. Do test shoots with people. • Contacts are everything. If people know you, they will book you. Trust and accessibility make you the one they will go to. • Be courageous with your styling, tell a story that is cohesive and obvious. Don’t think about what everyone else thinks, just do it. Fleur Madden, CEO, The Red Republic Public Relations Agency Getting your fashion brand noticed: • Invest in print-ready, high quality images that best showcase your designs. • Host an intimate media event that demonstrates a brand experience from your label. • Have samples available in advance for your PR to send out for fashion shoots. Luis Bond, Telstra Regional Business Manager SEQ. Using technology and apps in business: • Embrace digital disruption. No dream or goal is too big in a connected world. Whatever you are trying to achieve, there is more than likely a solution or application out there that can help you. • Free WiFi = Free Marketing. With the growth of social media and the urge for users to take photos and tag themselves at locations, there are platforms that help you get your branding out there in a more effective way through providing your customers a free WiFi service. • Ditch paper processes. Have all of your data and information stored in the cloud so that you and your team member can quickly and effortlessly find the information and tools to make better, more informed decisions.

Bowled over The popularity of açai and pataya bowls recently underwent a savoury twist with the Hawaiian poke bowl taking over the spotlight.
WORDS & PHOTOGRAPHY MARJ OSBORNE
ALTHOUGH THE EXACT ORIGIN of the dish is unclear, the poke bowl (pronounced poh-keh), is a classic Hawaiian pupu, or snack.
84
Existing long before Captain Cook’s arrival, the dish was originally a simple meal made of scraps of reef fish and crisp seaweed, mixed with crushed kukui nuts and sea salt. Influenced by various cultures (mainly through Japanese, Chinese and Korean labourers), the centuries old dish changed, melding into a new hybrid dish. With the introduction of long line fishing, deep water fish such as ahi (tuna) replaced reef fish. Shoyu and sesame oil were added to the recipe, with chilli and onion introduced after contact with European and American missionaries. First called ‘poke’ in the 1960s, it was only in
Kings, Aloha Bar & Dining and The Collective – however the dish quickly spread, offering us one of the healthiest, most convenient meals in town. So, now that we’ve found it, how are we serving the dish? Four components comprise a poke bowl: base, protein, dressing and extras are the basic formula, and from there, opinions vary. While traditional poke was a simple mix of cubed raw tuna with a bit of soy sauce, a bowl of poke is really limited only by your imagination. Jess, the owner of Caffeine Kings, believes in traditional sectioned bowls, the Japanese way, telling us that key elements are fresh fish, seaweed such as wakame, edamame, avocado and either a citrus ponzu or shoyu dressing.
Fortunately for us, there are no pre-prepared poke bowls on the coast. They’re always made to order, though the opinion of segmented versus ‘mixed in’ bowls varies. Most restaurants are opting for pretty bowls with healthy, fresh ingredients and good fats, brown rice rather than white, the ingredients segmented and left for you to mix. It’s also a dish that translates very well as a takeaway. My advice is to try several poke bowls from different venues. You’ll soon establish your own favourites, just as I have. Though the options are endless, some possible futures in store for poke bowls include: altering bases to kale, broccoli or cauli salad or salad greens, quinoa, farro or other grains, kelp or soba noodles, cucumber slaw or zucchini noodles;
the 1970s that the dish become a ubiquitous snack throughout Hawaii (in its worst form, sold by the bag in supermarkets). Much like the healthy reinvention of pizza, the ‘new’ poke spread like wildfire across the US and Canada in 2016, a zeitgeist that tapped into the obsession for fast-casual dining, and healthy yet satisfying food. It was inevitable that poke hit the Gold Coast soon after, although Pacific Rim cuisine has rarely been seen on the coast. Taking the fresh clean flavours of California style poke, we’ve adapted the dish to utilise our own fine local produce. At first, only a few cafés and restaurants on the Gold Coast took up the lei – Sandbar, Caffeine
It’s all about the freshest fish (or other seafood) and the balance of flavour and texture within a spectrum of complementary taste: not too much base, the traditional element of raw seafood enhanced by fresh avocado, seaweed and sesame, spring onions and an Asian-inspired dressing with balanced salt and sweet, acid and oil. For us, that’s a great starting point. The word ‘poke’ means ‘to cut crosswise into pieces’, however poke has traditionally been cubed, mixed in with other ingredients and a dressing. Japanese sushi chef Yus-uke, who has worked in Ten Japanese, Etsu and now Beachside Pavilion, says that it’s important to only use the belly cut of tuna or salmon for quality and texture, cut in a certain way before adding other ingredients.
taking advantage of fresh local produce such as prawns, fish roe, macadamias, avocado, finger lime, mango and jackfruit; and using probiotic and healthy food alternatives such as pickled shitake mushrooms or pickled carrots or radish, edamame, seaweed such as nori, wakame and toasted black sesame seeds. In the end, the question will be: How much do we stick to Hawaii’s poke tradition, or do we adapt the dish to modern times and new tastes? In my view, we’re so far removed both geographically and culturally from Hawaii that we’re likely to see more adaption rather than less. Perhaps, in time, we might even see a quintessential Gold Coast poke bowl emerge.
Three luxury residences coming soon to Sanctuary Cove.

WINE CELLAR
Back to the future Ancient wine making techniques are enjoying a contemporary resurgence. WORDS TONY HARPER
TRY casting your mind back about 8,000 years: the Sahara Desert didn’t yet exist, the Egyptians were just beginning to investigate agriculture, in India the precursor to the chicken – the junglefowl – was first domesticated, and wine was making its debut in Georgia. I like the fact that wine was done while the rest of agriculture and the chicken were still in their formative years: that’s good prioritising. It was primitive wine, made with simple technique; grapes bundled into clay kvevri (amphora), buried, left to ferment and dug up a year or so later: the yeasts had done their job and the grapes had alchemised into wine. Compared to the products of modern winemaking it would have been simplistic, probably quite feral but still intoxicating.
86
Modern wine production has all the bells and whistles, and there is no doubt that ten centuries of accumulated wisdom, science and machinery have transpired to make a more conservative, predictably good product. But there are a growing band of contemporary wine makers who are playing with the ancient techniques; amphora, skins, minimal fiddling; making the old new again. The movement began with a couple of maverick producers huddled mainly in Italy’s north-eastern corner and across the border in Slovenia: guys like Josko Gravner, Paolo Vodopivec and Sicily’s Frank Cornelissen. It has spread to all but the most traditional wine-producing countries, Australia included.
Glen Robert from Bent Road Wines makes wine from his beautiful property in the Granite Belt; some of it he makes in amphora. Tasting amphora wine is quite an experience: always interesting, sometimes unpleasant. The stuff Glen has created – under his La Petite Mort label – is stellar; silky, faultless and bearing an extra dimension than anything conventionally made. There are both a red (shiraz viognier) and a white (marsanne, viognier, roussanne). Here’s how the red was made … “A small parcel of Viognier is left on the vines to over-ripen and often shrivel and get a little sunburnt. This hopefully concentrates flavours and sugar in the grapes,” he explains.
Melbourne Cup
“When the Shiraz is sufficiently ripe, it is harvested together with the over-ripe Viognier, field blended, de-stemmed and crushed. “The must is divided between the amphora and stainless-steel tanks. A wild ferment develops and proceeds until dry. “Post ferment skin maceration continues for over 100 days and the grapes are pressed off on a full moon. “The wine continues to mature in stainless-steel tanks until bottled about three months after pressing.” 100 days? That’s quite a stretch when you consider that conventional red wines might see three weeks in contact with skins. Any time beyond that comes with inherent risks but also the potential for greater texture – a sort of velveteen quality to the tannins. Glen has captured it perfectly. “La Petite Mort is all about experimentation,” he says. “We were interested to see if there were unique qualities associated with wines made and matured in Amphorae. “We believe that these wines display a certain minerality and quirky fruit freshness. Prolonged maceration on skins results in knitted, velvety tannins. Because there is no oak maturation of these wines, their structural qualities are totally derived from prolonged skin contact.” This last point contains the crux of the story: most modern Australian reds and a good number of the whites spend time in oak barrels. When the oak is new it imparts a heap of flavour, but also tannins; structural elements. And the gently aerobic nature of barrel ageing (whether the oak is new or ancient) helps develop tannin structure, making it pliable and less aggressive. It seems that prolonged skin contact can achieve a similar thing, via a different route. And it brings with it a character and personality that’s quite unique. The white blend gets its amphora time before the red. “During vintage, because white grapes ripen first, the Marsanne, Viognier and Roussanne are harvested on the same day, field blended, de-stemmed and crushed; the must is divided between the amphora and stainless-steel tanks,” Glen says. “Despite being white grapes, they are treated as if they are red grapes and wild-fermentation continues on skins. “Alcohol fermentation proceeds to completion and the young wine continues to macerate on skins until the Shiraz is ready to harvest. “When the Shiraz is ready to harvest we press off the white so we can empty the Amphorae and prepare to make the Shiraz-Viognier.” The white is a little more edgy, more quirky than the red because anything beyond a tiny bit of skin contact changes the character of white wines quite dramatically, and we are simply not familiar with the aromas, flavours and textures it brings. But compared to some of the Italian, Slovenian and even other

Australian examples, La Petite Mort has made things warm and cuddly. With only two amphora the output is currently rather finite. However, given the success to date of the amphora project Glen is looking to turn things up a notch. “We’re planning on importing, directly from Georgia, some qvervri so next vintage we hope to produce more Amphorae wine.” For me that’s a great promise. Bent Road Wines and its subsidiary La Petite Mort make some of the most progressive, exciting wines in Queensland, and the amphora wines sit right at the top of the totem pole. A couple more amphora means doubling the output: that will take things from a tiny production to a merely small one. The bad news is that the 2016 La Petite Mort red and white are both all-but sold out.
This is one Melbourne Cup not to be missed.

GO Cruising Islands or inland? The Mediterranean or the Mekong? A luxury liner or a sailing ship? Whatever you choose, a holiday on the water is a special experience.
WORDS RHONDA OXNAM
THOSE OF US who have been on a cruise know that it’s a wonderful way to travel … those of you considering this mode of transport for your next holiday will surely be tempted by the plethora of choices available. Of course, the fact that you only have to unpack once, all your meals are taken care of and you will see the very best aspects of your chosen destination are an added bonus with this style of travel. I have been lucky enough to do three – very different – cruises so far. My maiden voyage was a seven-day trip from Broome to the Kimberley region of Western Australia with just 14 guests and seven crew on-board. Everything about this cruise – from the majestic scenery to the extreme isolation (and the subsequent disconnect from technology) – was truly memorable. Some of the highlights included a ‘Survivorstyle’ bonfire on a deserted beach, sipping an ice-cold beer while watching the sunset over Raft Point and hiking up the side of a cliff to discover a pristine waterhole, perfect for a refreshing dip. My second encounter at sea was literally the polar opposite to the first. A large cruise ship on one of the most popular routes … Alaska’s Inside Passage. Again the scenery was spectacular, as was the service, the on-board entertainment and the land excursions.
On this trip I flew by helicopter to the top of a glacier, took a dog sled ride across a snowcapped mountain, and travelled on the iconic White Pass & Yukon Route Railway. I also visited the stunning Glacier Bay and saw an iceberg calving into the clear blue waters… an awe-inspiring experience that would not be possible on anything other than a ship. My third cruise, just last year, was entirely different again. This time the destination was the Mighty Mississippi River; the mode of transport, a paddle steamer. While the river itself was more ‘muddy’ than ‘mighty’, the journey offered an incredible insight into life in America’s South … both past and present. Travelling from New Orleans to Memphis, this was a magical musical tour that featured Dixieland Jazz, Blues and, of course, Rock and Roll. We also saw some amazing ante bellum architecture, toured historic American Civil War sites and visited Graceland, the home of the legendary Elvis Presley. Of course, these three voyages are just an extremely small snapshot into the many options and itineraries available worldwide. And while my knowledge of cruising is limited by my personal experiences, your choices are only limited by your imagination. My advice … do your research, consult an expert and book your fare … Bon Voyage.

Good sports Comprising the 540C, 570GT and 570S coupés and 570S convertible, the McLaren Sports Series ticks all the boxes. WORDS CHRIS NIXON
IMAGINE what it takes to create a car-making company from scratch, build a factory, design the product and finally deliver it for sale. And not just any car, but one intended to be among the world’s best. Obviously there are many reasons we don’t see new makes reach the showrooms perhaps more than once a decade. But British sports car maker McLaren has done it, and in little more than five years they have produced over 10,000 cars. What would be barely a blink on a Toyota production line is a considerable achievement for any premium manufacturer, and McLaren rivals including Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche and Aston Martin have had decades – actually in the case of Aston Martin, more than a century – to build up to such numbers.
106
Straight out of the blocks, unaided (or unhindered) by the historical DNA that defines the other makes – their engines and styling, for instance – McLaren started making winners. It has had some help, of course, from the eponymous McLaren Formula 1 racing operation and a couple of earlier, relatively small, forays into road-car production that realised the McLaren F1 and Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren. But McLaren Automotive and its first model, the MP4-12C, came from virtually clean sheets – and in the kind of time frame in which grand prix teams excel. The vision of the McLaren group’s then-chief Ron Dennis was clearly behind the project. In 1981, Dennis had taken over the McLaren racing organisation, which had continued after the death in a 1970 track crash of its founder,
New Zealander Bruce McLaren. Dennis became renowned as intensely focused and above all precise in everything he said and did. He built the team into one of the most successful in Formula 1 and, when the time came, put the same drive into the road-car project. The factory, part of the McLaren Technology Campus in Woking, outside London, is the epitome of Silicone Valley-style hi-tech and the cars flaunt the same qualities. Dennis sold out of all his McLaren interests this year, but his ascetic influence remains. “When we talk about performance, we aren’t just talking about acceleration, deceleration, cornering and top speed,” he said when the company was launched. “We’re talking about aerodynamics efficiencies, of weight, of manufacturing technologies, about
trying to reduce the labour intensity of a product such as this, and we’re talking about low carbondioxide emissions.” Which brings us to this edition’s review subject, the McLaren Sports Series. It epitomises Dennis’s credo. Comprising the 540C, 570GT and 570S coupés and 570S convertible, the Sports Series is the entry point in a three-tier range also including the Super Series and Ultimate Series. ‘Entry’ is a relative description – the least expensive car, the 540C, still costs $325,000 plus on-roads and has a top speed of 320 kmh. The 570S costs around $379,000 and the GT, $406,000. Give or take a few thou’, the Sports Series cars are in the same price bracket as the Porsche 911 Turbo, Audi R8, Bentley Continental GT, Lamborghini Huracan or Ferrari California. The model designations are easy to understand – the 540C has 540 horsepower (397 kiloWatts) and the 570GT/S, 419 kW. The GT is the most recent addition to the Sport Series. It features a longer and slightly higher roof, in full-length glass, which creates a luggage space above the engine and gearbox. The other cars have a shorter roof and ventilated engine cover. It claims other concessions to comfort and usability, such as revised suspension and brakes. It could be your daily driver, or at least a companionable weekender. >>

If the GT is supposed to provide a slightly less hard-edged experience than the 570S or 540C, the difference is hardly noticeable. Every one is a road-going missile and a testament to the core sports car values of lightness and efficiency. The McLarens are built around a central structure called the MonoCell II and made of carbonfibre, which is woven synthetic matting shaped into a mould and baked in resin. It’s immensely strong yet weighs less than 80kg; suspension, engine/gearbox, other mechanicals and the bodywork are attached to it. Overall, the cars weigh between 1,311kg and 1,350kg dry, very little for a luxuriously-appointed model with a twin-turbocharged V8 engine. This benefits not only the performance – 0-100kmh in 3.2 seconds for the 570S – but also handling, driveability and safety.
108
In particular, the McLaren’s steering is sublime, the most responsive and communicative, yet well-behaved, that I’ve experienced. The engine – McLaren’s own – pins your ears back as it hurls the car forward, spinning well past 7,000rpm before the seven-speed automated gearbox even thinks of changing up. A minor complaint: the sound could be a little more dramatic. As usual, there are Normal, Sport and Track driving modes, but the dampers can also be adjusted separately. Cornering grip is as expected, phenomenal and perfectly balanced, but where the suspension shines unexpectedly is in ride comfort. This 320kmh supercar, designed to corner like a racer, rides the bumps as gently as a Mercedes. Light weight is the key contributor here.
Complementing the ride comfort is a beautifully-appointed cabin. Best-quality, hand-crafted leather, of course. Better still, the interior is elegantly simple and near-perfect ergonomically. Distractions are minimal. Drive a McLaren like grandpa and it will make you feel like a grand prix ace. Its attention to detail in design and dedication to optimum efficiency are amazing. Not a thing is missing from this package, yet nothing seems superfluous. Mr Dennis should be proud.

The celebrations continued at the 70 years of Ferrari VIP Cocktail Event. Hosted by Martin Roller, Managing Director of Ferrari Brisbane, the exclusive ‘invitation only’ evening for 250 VIP Ferrari owners and collectors was held in the Palazzo Versace Ballroom. The luxe evening featured Ferrari Brisbane Esperienza partners HUGO BOSS, Tiffany & Co., Veuve Clicquot, Macquarie Private Wealth and Ray White Marine. A highlight of the night was the unveiling of the Ferrari 812 Superfast – Ferrari’s latest model and the fastest ever car produced by the company – in a new colour called Grigio Caldo Opaco. Marking the Ferrari 812 Superfast’s very first appearance in the Sunshine State following the International Premiere at the Geneva International Motor Show in March this year, the model opens a new chapter in Ferrari V12 engine history and marks the 70th anniversary since Ferrari released its first Cavallino Rampante sports car, the 125 S, in 1947. To this day, Ferrari remains the only manufacturer to have continuously produced sports cars with 12-cylinder engines throughout that time.

Presented by Australia's finest Real Estate agents
Selling your property in today’s market THERE ARE SEVERAL common ways to sell real estate. What strategy you use will depend a lot on the type of property (land, house, apartment or townhouse), where it is located, how the property market is behaving and how quickly you need the property sold. Make sure you understand all the pros and cons before deciding on the method of sale, as the method of sale selected and the associated costs will be written into your agreement with the sales agent. It is wise to talk to a few agents before you choose a method of sale. Ask the agent to inspect your property and to explain the current state of the market to you and to give you a written plan to market and sell your property. The three most popular methods of sale are Fixed Price, Auction and Tender. Sale by Fixed Price: This is the most popular method of sale for residential property, however setting a fixed price can be a tricky business.
Too high and the property may not sell for some time. Too low and you may not receive full value for the property. To ensure you select the right sale price, talk to a number of agents in your area and get their ideas on price. Look at your property through the eyes of a third person, what are its good and bad points. Look at other similar properties in the area that have sold and look in the local papers for prices listed for properties in your general area. Sale by Auction: An Auction is a public sale conducted at a specific date, time and place (often at the property). Prospective buyers register with the auctioneer. Buyers bid and the property is sold to the highest bidder at the auction or possibly by negotiation following the auction, if the property is passed in. Before the auction starts you can set a reserve price for the minimum amount you will accept. Sale by Tender: The property is marketed as with an auction property. Interested parties are
asked to submit written tenders or offers before a certain date. On the closing date all of the tenders are considered and the seller can choose one or reject them all. If no tender is considered high enough then the agent can go back to that highest tenderer and see if they are willing to increase their offer. The bidding by tender is kept confidential, with each bidder not knowing how close to the sale price they are. Tender can be a great way to sell a unique property or one in a high demand area. Remember before signing any sale contract, take a copy of the contract away and discuss it with your solicitor. Don’t sign without seeking independent legal advice first. Architectural magnificence ‘Solis’ – Idyllic setting meets award-winning design. OFFERED TO THE MARKET for the first time, ‘Solis’ is a stunning architectural response to one of the world’s most famously beautiful locations, Hamilton Island. Located at the gateway of the world-heritage listed Great Barrier Reef, Hamilton Island is globally recognised as a coastal paradise with a bevy of tropical islands and reefs that are ideal for boating, swimming, diving, snorkeling and fishing. ‘Solis’ was designed by internationally renowned architect, Renato D’Ettorre. Awarded by the Australian Institute of Architects Best Residential Architecture both nationally and for Queensland, as well as the Robin Dodds Award for Best Residential Architecture for Queensland and House of the Year, ‘Solis’ was completed in 2010. The award-winning design exquisitely intertwines the home with the surrounding Coral Sea, with a series of reflection ponds and swimming pools that combine to create a sense of flowing tranquility and sensuous tactility to the property. On a practical level, the home provides casual, elegant indoor/outdoor living that is in perfect harmony with the natural beauty and serenity of the surrounds. Artistically crafted from concrete, stone and glass, ‘Solis’ is a spacious, freeflowing home that is a brilliant and contemporary interpretation of idyllic coastal living.
118
With access to three swimming pools, ponds, courtyards and terraces available from every living space of the home, ‘Solis’ provides a sense of connectivity to its stunning natural surroundings. “It feels like ‘Solis’ is floating,” says listing agent, Carol Carter from Queensland Sotheby’s International Realty. “The way this home flows is extraordinary, the interiors feel like a natural extension of the home’s surroundings. “The main pool encompasses almost the entire ground level, evoking a sense that the home itself extends across to the Coral Sea. “The second pool is separate to the home itself, forming part of the outdoor barbeque and entertaining area looking over the sea from the lower level. This area creates a separate idyllic garden setting to relax in, or host impressive entertaining from. “The third is a stunning indoor/outdoor plunge pool again boasting views across the sea from the home’s lower level, a place to relax and enjoy the one in a million view of this remarkable home,” said Carol. The open-plan living spaces of ‘Solis’ are all designed to effortlessly extend out to the terraces, with every level and vantage point providing enormous surprise and delight. The home features a light-filled, full Boffi Kitchen, and the rest of the house includes high quality European fittings and fixtures throughout.
With three generously sized bedroom suites, each with dramatic ocean views, the design of the accommodation would work equally for an extended family, or as impressive guest quarters. The functional living spaces, including the sleek, contemporary bathrooms, have been designed to eliminate any superfluous detail, imbuing the living spaces with a sense of uncluttered elegance. According to the architect, Renato D’Ettorre, ’Solis’ on Hamilton Island draws inspiration from its magnificent location, with the design seeking to balance the human spirit with nature. “Remaining connected to these surroundings was one of the key elements driving the design of the house,” he says. “This is done by reconnecting with nature through the simple act of observing the wonders of its ever-changing scenery and by harnessing its benefits including the off-shore cool sea breezes, the warm evenings, spectacular sunsets and the lush vegetation and beauty of tropical rainfalls.”

COVE LIVING
Luxury, location, lifestyle Key factors driving Gold Coast development.
WORDS LISA CARTER
FOR A CITY that didn’t even exist in the 1954 census, the growth of a little seaside town we now know as the Gold Coast into the 600,000strong region it is today has been nothing short of meteoric. The expansion of the sixth-largest city in Australia is only going to continue amid predictions it will be a city of truly metropolitan scale by the middle of this century, with developers like the joint venture Wanda Ridong Group leading a plethora of those who’ve recognised the region’s key economic drivers, historic growth, and prized lifestyle attributes as the perfect combination for stellar capital growth. The Wanda Ridong Group is already half-way through building its $1 billion, triple tower Jewel residential and hotel resort, which is currently the largest private construction project underway in south-east Queensland. With 512 luxury and spacious apartments; a 169-suite, six-star hotel; palatial ballroom that can seat almost 500 guests; six-room day spa; indoor and outdoor pools; fitness and recreation facilities; retail precinct and all-day dining options scattered throughout, it will also be the largest of its kind in Australia. Wanda Ridong Director, and Ridong Director, Baron Li says the project will have been a decade in the making when it is finally unveiled in the first quarter of 2019. “Jewel is a project that will change the Gold Coast forever, and will be a crucial component in this city’s journey to becoming a world-class destination,” Mr Li says. According to KPMG’s comprehensive Beyond the Horizon report, designed to facilitate the infrastructure, planning and investment the Gold Coast will need as it lurches toward doubling its
120
population by 2050 – this metropolis by the sea has added close to 15,000 new residents each year for the better part of two decades. “This is a city that has been willed into existence because of the fundamental demand for lifestyle and leisure – everything that the Gold Coast is famous for,” says the report’s co-author and highly-regarded demographer, KPMG partner Bernard Salt. “It sets itself apart. Fluidity, mobility, lifestyle. Why would you not choose the Gold Coast?” he says. It’s the only city in Australia that can reliably claim it will double its population within the next 35 years – underpinned by solid investment opportunities and booming infrastructure, coupled with an enviable lifestyle that attracts more than 12 million visitors each year, longing to kick off their shoes to feel the pristine white sands of 57 kilometres of coastline under their feet, and swim in the azure blue waters that average a temperate 22.5 degrees Celsius, in winter. “This was a revolution the Ridong Group recognised many years ago and why we decided to make our largest investment here when others were abandoning it after the GFC, because we knew it would become one of the most lucrative hot spots for capital growth,” Mr Li said. With two-thirds of the projected population growth expected to live within the current urban footprint, experts tip the Gold Coast’s evolution into becoming one of the top oceanfront destinations in the world, it will be marked by new infrastructure, next-gen businesses, innovative lifestyle and leisure facilities, nation-leading education and healthcare, and a knowledge economy, as residents move away from separate houses into higher density living. >>

“With our joint venture partner the Dalian Wanda Group, we are building the most ambitious piece of architecture in Australia, on a rare parcel of land that has the ocean at the front, the mountains close by, and the river at the back, in a city tipped for a massive 10 – 20 per cent growth in the next twelve months,” he said. Development Applications are in at Gold Coast City Council for several more multi-million dollar projects, including Aquis Pacific Point, Azzura Imperial Square at Southport, Orion at Surfers Paradise, and Star of the Sea in central Surfers Paradise. Construction is also ramping up on other apartment projects in the region, including Star Towers at Broadbeach and Spirit at Surfers Paradise, however Jewel is setting the tone for the prestige market, as it launches for sale the 108 apartments in the highly-anticipated Tower Three, which is designated strictly residents only. The design team has positioned the exclusive Tower Three closer to the ocean, with its own private beachfront entrance, and panoramic ocean views, as well as a fully-dedicated, 24-hour concierge service. “From a midnight ice-cream craving or a rare bottle of wine for a dinner party, to something grander like organising a chopper ride over the coastline for a special date, our Tower Three
122
residents will be able to call on the concierge day or night to take care of their every whim,” Mr Li says. “Most of our interested parties are locals, or from Sydney, Melbourne or New Zealand, so we expect they’ll use this to have their day-to-day tasks sorted – like car washing, coordinating newspaper deliveries, taxi and limousine bookings and airport transfers, dry-cleaning, organising pet care when they go away, grocery shopping, IT support – all the things we hate dealing with ourselves,” he says. Wanda International Re al Estate Marketing Director, Michael Purefoy, said it was the kind of offering that had become an expectation at places like Mercedes House apartments in New York’s Hell’s Kitchen, or The Mark Hotel’s residences on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, but few had attempted in Australia. “Right from early stages of the Jewel design, we wanted to do something remarkable and totally unexpected for Tower Three as it held such a commanding position and viewpoint, and we think we’ve created something that’s taken the entire concept of luxury living to the next level,” he says. “The concierge, coupled with the six-star hotel amenities, is new not just for the Gold Coast, but for the entire Australian real estate market.
“Tower Three has the best vantage point in the entire city, giving all 108 apartments extraordinary views to the south right down to Burleigh Heads, to the north all the way up to South Stradbroke Island’s Point Lookout, and of course, they’ll have absolutely uninterrupted easterly views out over the Pacific Ocean,” he explains. “We believe the amenities on offer will soon become a requirement for all luxury developments going forward.” The Gold Coast’s incredible value exchange is also proving too good to be true for southerners keen to trade in the frenetic pace and overheated Sydney prices for a comparably-priced, but more desirable lifestyle, where Mr Li, a former Sydney-sider himself, says afternoons are spent on the beach, instead of in bumper-tobumper traffic. “It’s been an exciting few years, and while we were very early to recognise the Gold Coast was primed for a luxury revolution, we are now watching an unprecedented level of foreign investment in the city we call home, and we can’t wait to see it progress into a world-class city over the next few years,” Mr Li said.

They will be promoting and highlighting both modern and heritage design, in projects ranging in size and scope from residential homes through to large corporate developments. BDA Architecture have taken part in GCOH for the past couple of years and always knew that the event would work for the company on a number of levels. It would showcase the innovative recent designs by the firm, create an introduction to a new group of Gold Coasters, provide a change to de-mystify architecture, and also serve as a way to affirm the company’s commitment to the growth of a cultural event. For BDA, the Open House event is a chance to engage the general public to see the future of the Gold Coast, as well as lifting the curtains on an industry with a vital role in that future. “We want to create architecture that plays on the development of the unique design aesthetic of the Gold Coast, which reflects the lifestyle and increasing commercial expansion of the region,” says BDA director, Darren Greenaway.

The Gold Coast event is part of a growing trend across the world. Open House originated in Britain and there are now more than 30 similar events worldwide. The shared theme for each one is unlocking local spaces for their communities. The volunteer-lead GCOH event has also helped to change some misconceptions about Gold Coast architecture and the culture of the city. “It’s much more than theme parks and beaches,” says Greg Ewart, the co-chair of GCOH and also the co-chair of the Gold Coast-Northern Rivers Australian Institute of Architecture. “The Gold Coast is not like bigger cities such as Brisbane, that have traditional industrial or commercial centres. It might have been built on tourism but it’s much more. And so is its architecture,” he said. “This cultural event is for locals to see what is in their back yard and what interesting buildings are perhaps down their street. Buildings have a story to tell, and this is a great way to engage with them.” The line-up for GCOH 2017 includes several of the most popular entries from 2016, together with new and innovative projects developed over the past year.
GCOH organisers were thrilled to have the Abedian School of Architecture at Bond University return, as well popular residence The Patio house – inspired by the 1950s-1960s design aesthetic – opening its doors to Gold Coasters. For BDA, GCOH is an important opportunity to highlight their commercial expertise, by again showcasing their well-received 2016 entry for the new Sports Science Centre at Bond University. The Bond centre contains state-of-theart fitness equipment, with generous group exercise areas on four levels. The building is partly sandstone to match the distinctive natural façade of the entire educational facility. Situated at 14 University Drive, Robina, the centre will be open for pre-booked tours at 11am and 2pm. According to Darren, BDA’s involvement in GCOH is a chance to highlight the company’s response to the challenging times and changing face of the Gold Coast. “We have expertise in lifestyle designs in and around the Gold Coast. However, commercial and recreational properties have become increasingly important as the Gold Coast shifts from a resort-based city to an important business hub.”

He also believes the GCOH is a perfect platform to shine a spotlight on architecture and the people who are shaping the future of the Gold Coast, as well as highlighting the complex challenges of designing buildings in the 21st century. “Architecture is at the heart of any city. Bringing good ideas from visions to reality, especially on the Gold Coast, is a wonderful challenge and we want to tell that story. “Meeting potential clients and de-constructing the complexity of architecture, and what architects have to offer, is really valuable for building relationships. The GCOH platform offers us a unique opportunity to chat with people and explain our design strategies and ideas. It’s also fun.” The Gold Coast Open House 2017 is on Saturday, 4 November. Schedules for tours can be found on the GCOH website: goldcoastopenhouse.com.au or through the social media hashtag #unlockyourcity.

SCORPIO 24 Oct – 22 Nov
Jupiter and Mercury will enter your sign in October, and will be joined by the Sun on the 23rd, making a potentially dramatic and intriguing time. Your relationships may come under scrutiny, and there may be intense developments. For some, these will be marvellous; for others, a little challenging. Artistic, creative and family activities could flourish in November.
PISCES 20 Feb – 20 Mar
CANCER 22 Jun – 23 Jul
You’ll gain the opportunity to revitalise your personal life with careful planning and attention to finances and an outgoing spirit. When change occurs, ensure you pay attention to details and avoid mix-ups and misunderstandings. You may feel particularly intuitive during this time. Singles may meet someone special and couples could ramp up romance, especially in November.
You’ll appreciate the opportunity to spread your wings a little and breathe fresh air into your life via travel or simply through following your dreams a little more. In October, financial matters are best dealt with carefully, to avoid overspending, and to establish a sound budget for the rest of the year. Expect developments at home or with family in November.
ARIES 21 Mar – 20 Apr
Progress over the next two months will depend on good communication skills, as you’ll be working increasingly with collaborations that require cooperation. A change of circumstance, especially regarding study, travel and the way you share duties and common space, is best handled carefully, with the intention to usher in a new and exciting change in key relationships.
LEO 24 Jul – 23 Aug
You’ll appreciate the chance to pour your energy into your favourite projects over the next two months. You’ll notice the increased influence of loyal friends and family over the weeks. Prepare for a change of schedule at work or health-wise, enabling you to enjoy life more. The Sun will enter your sign on November 22, putting the focus on love and money.
CAPRICORN 23 Dec – 20 Jan
SAGITTARIUS 23 Nov – 22 Dec
In October, important decisions to do with shared resources such as finances will merit careful planning. Romance will blossom in November, making this an ideal time for a short trip or simply to spend a little more time investing in the important people in your life. And, where you’ve been uncertain about some relationships, November should bring more stability.
TAURUS 21 Apr – 21 May
You’ll appreciate the opportunity to try new ideas and activities in your daily schedule over the next two months. For some, this will translate as a new work routine; for others, more focus on health and wellbeing. The ties that bind you to particular people such as family and partners will blossom during November. Singles may meet someone who grows on you.
VIRGO 24 Aug – 23 Sept
A change in your circumstances will encourage you to be more outgoing and to try something new. A change within your status, due to work or personal life, may shake up your usual routine, but you have much to gain by pursuing your goals now. Those people you are completely loyal to – and who have your back in return – will prove their weight in gold over coming months.
AQUARIUS 21 Jan – 19 Feb
GEMINI 22 May – 21 Jun
LIBRA 24 Sept – 23 Oct
A change in domestic circumstances will ring in the changes, and this may well alter your status too. For some, this will mean a new work or daily routine; for others, the need to relate to those close to you in a new, more inspired and practical way. In November, a new chapter regarding a close relationship, family or creative project will spur you on to be even more outgoing.
The Sun, Mercury and Jupiter will all traverse the top of your chart, bringing new opportunities your way. Avoid limiting your abilities and horizons: be adventurous. You may feel a little restless later in October, as some of your ambitions may need finetuning. Consider boosting your communication skills then, as your great people skills will be in demand in November.
