Who doesn’t love a delicious gourmet feast, an interesting holiday destination or an award-winning Queenslander?

Editor’s letter I HAVE A CONFESSION to make. Like millions of other women around the globe I have a passion for shoes, beautiful shoes … and they don’t come any more beautiful than a pair of Louboutins, with their signature red sole and vertiginous stiletto heels. Therefore, I am understandably excited that our first feature for 2018 is with the man behind this iconic brand, Christian Louboutin. From his humble beginnings working in a music hall to heading up a multi-million dollar empire, this is a fascinating read. Still on internationally recognisable names and labels, the cover for this edition is popular Australian actor Marta Dusseldorp wearing Bally. You will find more shots and information inside, along with an article on ‘Millennium It Girl’ Bella Hadid and her collaboration with luxury watch brand TAG Heuer. Before I alienate our male readers with all this fashion focus, the motoring section showcases some very covetable cars including the all-new Aston Martin Vantage (available in very stylish Lime Essence) and the latest Bentley, Ferrari and Lamborghini. We also take a look at Rolex’s 50-year association with the sport golf and unveil Link Hope Island’s plan for celebrating their 25th Anniversary this year.

And who doesn’t love a delicious gourmet feast, an interesting holiday destination or an award-winning Queenslander? We have all three covered as Kirsty heads to Spicers Hidden Vale for an epicurean escape, Paul explores the vibrant New Jersey borough of Hoboken (birthplace of Frank Sinatra and home to the first ever baseball game) and Tony chats to the Granite Belt’s Mike Hayes, who was recently named Australian Winemaker of the Year. Of course, all the regular social photos, event calendars, horoscopes and brain teasers are included to keep you busy, while the Top Tables section is sure to ignite your taste buds Finally, as this is our Design edition, we take a look at the redevelopment of The Star Gold Coast, chat to award-winning architect Bayden Goddard and profile Gold Coast home designer Tim Roberts. The ever-growing Property section also opens the doors to some of the most stunning homes for sale in the region.

WORDS SARAH ROYCE-GREENSILL / THE TELEGRAPH / THE INTERVIEW PEOPLE

BORN IN PARIS IN 1963, Christian Louboutin began work aged 17 at the Folies Bergère music hall, before his obsession with shoes led him to work for French designer Charles Jourdan and later Roger Vivier. He set up his own company in 1991, opening a store in Paris. His high-end stiletto footwear incorporating the shiny, red-lacquered soles that have become his signature quickly gained the attention of the fashion world and over one million pairs of Christian Louboutin shoes are now sold every year.

In 2014 he branched out into beauty, with a range of nail polish, followed by lipstick and fragrance. He has houses in Paris, Lisbon, Aleppo and Luxor, along with a houseboat named Dahabibi (My Love Boat) on the Nile. In this personal interview, the French designer explains how he became one of the most influential figures in women’s fashion and reveals the fascinating story behind that infamous red sole: I started working at the Folies Bergère because I’d done drawings of shoes for the dancers, but I never made a pair of shoes there – I made coffee, helped the technicians, resewed costumes. When I joined I was everyone’s little darling but after six months I became part of the furniture and the girls started to get annoyed with me being around all the time, so it was probably time to leave. >>

“Don’t necessarily focus in a straight line because there are a lot of opportunities that you’re not expecting, maybe that don’t even exist right now.”

Roger Vivier was the first person who made me think that designing shoes could be a real job, a beautiful job. I was his assistant when he was working on his retrospective in Paris, and he became a mentor to me. The funny part is that he was quite competitive. One day he described someone as being ‘our age’. I was 24, he was 80. I couldn’t believe it, 60 years made no difference to him. But that’s why he was always so alive, so vivid and enthusiastic. Sometimes the shoe is not the master of the ceremony. Christian Dior once told Mr Vivier that a good shoe is able to appear but also able to disappear. It doesn’t apply to all of my shoes but it’s very good advice. You have to look at the woman first. As a designer you should always remain true to yourself. You have to believe in your own creativity. >>

Every time I have gone with someone else’s choice, I was wrong. For instance, one time the buyers said they wanted a thicker heel and for some reason I said yes. But the balance of a shoe comes from every line. That shoe was not successful at all. And actually I was pretty happy because it means that when I’m true to myself my customers can see it. When I looked at my first prototype, it wasn’t as good as the drawings. From the back, it was monochromatic – very, very black. So I grabbed a bottle of red nail polish from a girl in my studio and painted the entire sole. The red sole quickly became a silent recognition of my brand, and later a trademark. But the court case over that trademark was very painful. I’m not an aggressive person, I just thought the company that copied me could have done other things.

I wouldn’t sell myself for celebrities, I don’t see the point. I was most flattered when I saw the French singer Sylvie Vartan wear my shoes. She was very big in the 1970s, and I couldn’t believe that someone from my childhood was actually wearing a shoe I had designed. It has required a lot of strength to stay independent. It’s difficult to resist when people offer you something amazing. In 25 years I’ve met thousands of people who’ve given me advice, and someone else will always give the exact opposite advice. Everyone has an agenda. That’s why you have to stay focused and decide for yourself. The only regret I have is that my mother died before I started my company. I owe my stability to the education she gave me and how loving she was, so I regret that she didn’t get to see that she did a great job.

There were a lot of signals that I should go into beauty. There was fake Louboutin nail polish so it clearly made sense, and of course it’s part of my story. It took me two years to be happy with the polish and lipstick, then I moved on to fragrance. It needs to be organic and well digested; I don’t want to do things just for the sake of doing them. Don’t limit yourself; the sky is the limit. As a young designer, you should not look too far into the future because you may be surprised by your trajectory. When I started, I never imagined that 20 years on I’d still be in business, selling a million pairs of shoes a year. If I’d projected this far I wouldn’t have predicted the way it has happened. Don’t necessarily focus in a straight line because there are a lot of opportunities that you’re not expecting, maybe that don’t even exist right now.

COVER STORY

Role model From stage to screen, Marta Dusseldorp is one of our most popular actors.

WORDS LIBBY JANE CHARLESTON

ACCLAIMED ACTRESS Marta Dusseldorp has developed a soft spot for Queensland; not only did she ‘fall in love with Brisbane audiences’ when she starred in a recent theatrical production in the capital city, but she has named Great Keppel Island and the nearby town Yeppoon as two of her most favourite holiday destinations in the world. “I would choose those two beautiful places over the perceived ‘glam’ of Fiji any day,” Marta said. “The natural beauty of Great Keppel was incredible, we didn’t want to leave. And we loved Yeppoon, the beautiful coastline and lovely town. We can’t wait to go back again.” Marta is the beloved lead actress of A Place To Call Home, the Foxtel TV series that has reached an almost cult-like status, partly due to the sheer passion of its fans. Its devoted viewers were so horrified when Channel Seven axed the show in 2014 that, thanks

34

to persistent fans and their online petitions, it was given a second life by Foxtel. A Place To Call Home has gone from strength to strength and has now been on air for five seasons. It’s also screened in over 120 countries, which means Marta is well known wherever she goes. “I’m recognised every day I leave the house,” she says. “My fans are always so lovely, I don’t have many moments where eventually someone doesn’t say, ‘I think you’re fabulous’. It’s always non-invasive and I always wonder if they are seeing me as Sarah [her character in A Place To Call Home] or Janet King (from the ABC TV series). Or sometimes they recognise me as Linda from Jack Irish, but I can never pick it. “Some people think there’s an ABC type of viewer and a Foxtel type, but I never know – sometimes it’s young girls, older men, middle aged women, grandmothers or young boys studying law who love

to watch Janet King and use it as a learning tool for university. There is such a broad reach and it makes me feel very proud.” The other role that makes her incredibly proud is being a Special Representative for Australia UNHCR. She recently travelled to Jordan and Lebanon to meet Syrian refugee families; it was a time she will never forget. “It was both heart breaking and inspiring to meet people who have lost everything and one message we must get across is that nobody actually wanted to leave their home, they had absolutely no choice, it was a matter of life and death. “I am so proud of my work with the UNHCR, the world is so in need of voices for the voiceless.” Marta’s recent stint in Brisbane, where she played the lead role, alongside her husband actor Ben Winspear, in the play Scenes from a Marriage, brings us back to yet another reason she loves Queensland.

“Scenes from a Marriage was an amazing experience, the Brisbane audience was extraordinary and gave me and my husband the desire to keep working there. The audience was so generous, enthusiastic and involved in the show. We left and said, ‘We’ve got to come back here’.” As for her 2018 plans, she’s decided to do a play every year, if her schedule allows her to. “I come from the theatre and it will always be my passion,” she says. “When I started doing only TV I became more isolated, as it becomes a little bit between you and the camera and less about rehearsal; in TV you get zero rehearsal. “So the thought of doing more theatre this year and perhaps taking another Queensland holiday are things I’m excited about right now.”

Link lady Introducing the TAG Heuer Bella Hadid Link – the first special edition watch designed by the Supermodel and Brand Ambassador.

Photography by Tom Craig

DOES BELLA HADID really need any introduction? Both It Girl and supermodel, this fashion icon had the fastest growing fan-base of followers on social media networks in 2016 – 17 million in total. In the world of modelling, she is handling the demands of her extraordinary lifestyle and stratospheric fame with poise and maturity. She knows exactly what she wants, what she likes, and what she wants to achieve. Aged just 20, the divine Bella opted to work with TAG Heuer, lending her fresh, toned and youthful image to luxury Swiss watchmaking. She understands how to express herself through images, sometimes light-hearted, sometimes profound and mysterious, but always with a clear artistic sense which is deeply personal.

40

She speaks the language of the Millennials, the generation with whom the Swiss watch brand is currently reconnecting, driven by its CEO Jean-Claude Biver, also President of the LVMH Watch Group Division. To celebrate this partnership, TAG Heuer has unveiled the special edition designed for the star. To emphasise the glamorous, vivacious side of the divine Bella Hadid, a Link watch – the most feminine model in the entire collection – was chosen. All matt black, with a magnificent motherof-pearl dial proudly showcasing 12 diamonds, the watch is modern and contemporary, made entirely from ceramic, the perfect watchmaking material.

The bracelet is the famous Link design, which is one of the most comfortable bracelets to wear. Each component of the bracelet is polished, ensuring it is smooth to the touch and flexible on the wrist. Thanks to this sublime attention to detail, wearing the Link becomes a veritable experience, one filled with elegance and charm. The piece is further embellished by a bezel set with 48 diamonds, while the back of the watch is engraved with the star’s signature. The result is elegant, glamorous, and full of character. Just like Bella herself. Limited to 500 pieces, this special edition is sure to delight any woman.

LOOKING GOOD

Worth smiling about It’s important to do your research when considering Dental Implants. DR NEIL LATCHAM from Benowa Mansions Dental Specialists Centre (BMDSC) answers some common questions about Dental Implants. Does placement of dental implants hurt? This is, understandably, a very common question. Obviously, I cannot attest to how implant patients fare at other practices. However, I do know that those undergoing implant therapy at BMDSC rarely feel more than minor discomfort. In fact, patients can expect to resume their normal routine the next day after implant surgery. Do I need to have a general anesthesia for the placement of dental implants? Dental implants can be placed safely and painlessly without the use of general anesthetic. I prefer to use a local anesthetic for the procedure and have, over the years, placed over 12,000 dental implants without resorting to a general anaesthetic. Of course, this avoids all the significant risks associated with a general anaesthetic. It is also a far less expensive option for the patient both in terms of the cost of the procedure and the potential time off work required to recover from a general. With respect to local anesthetics, some are more effective than others and not all practices use the more expensive medication. At BMDSC, however, in all our implant cases we use deep and long lasting anesthesia to ensure the entire procedure is pain free. Do I have to go without teeth following the placement of the dental implant? At some practices, even after the patient has had the implant placed they may have to go about their everyday lives with a gap or partial denture.

44

BMDSC has an in-house dental laboratory which means in 90 per cent of cases, a fixed replacement temporary tooth (or teeth) can be put in place on the same day that the dental implant is placed. How long do I have to wait following the removal of a tooth before I can have a dental implant placed? For single-rooted tooth (i.e. front teeth) the implant is generally best placed on the same day the tooth is removed. In 99 per cent of cases this is the best possible outcome for the patient. On the other hand, for multiple-rooted teeth (molars) generally the dental implant is placed three months after the careful removal of the tooth. However, the good news is that in some cases the patient can elect to have a temporary denture constructed to wear during this healing period. How much do I receive back from my health fund insurer for dental implant therapy? This depends on a variety of factors including which health fund is used, the patient’s level of cover and the amount already claimed in benefits in the health fund year. Ideally, if a single dental implant is placed in one health fund year and then the dental implant crown is placed in the next health fund year the patient can usually expect about 50 per cent rebate on these at our practice. This means approximately $ 3,000 out-of-pocket expense for the insured patient. What else is included in this outlay for an implant? At BMDSC, we offer patients a 30-year conditional warranty on each dental implant placed. In addition, if the patient has a crown

manufactured by a specified dental laboratory then the implant crown comes with a lifetime warranty. What conditions are applied to the 30-year warranty? As smoking greatly increases the risk of dental implant failure, the patient must refrain from smoking. In addition, the patient must return for review as prescribed by the practice. This is usually annually for the first two years. Then, after two years, it increases to either two to three years in the long-term. The patient will also see his or her general dentist in the interim. Is a dental implant better than a tooth? It is always preferable to conserve a natural tooth. However, if the tooth is unhealthy due to infection or there is a high decay rate then an implant may be the best option. Although dental implants do not decay like a natural tooth they can be adversely affected by gum disease. Therefore, for the long-term success of the implant, ideally your implant should be placed by a specialist periodontist. How should I choose my practitioner? Like with most things, ‘word of mouth’ is usually a reliable indicator of where to start when it comes to choosing a practitioner to undertake implant therapy. Ideally, the practitioner should be a registered specialist who is prepared to stand by the work done with some sort of warranty or guarantee. He or she should also be prepared to follow up the treatment so a successful and healthy outcome is achieved. If you wish to consult directly with a specialist like myself, you can do so without the need for a referral.

The best in the business Dining Awards … how, what, where and when.

WORDS MARJ OSBORNE

RESTAURANT AWARDS are ‘the Oscars’ of the hospitality industry. Highly prized, such critical acclaim can make or break reputations. Award announcements are eagerly awaited, listings are highly sought after and there is an outcry if ratings slip, all documented in a flurry of media activity. Historically, the world’s most coveted award has been The Michelin Guide, immortalised in films such as The Hundred-Foot Journey, Burnt, The Trip and 2017’s Michelin Stars: Tales from the Kitchen. Ironically, The Michelin Guide began in 1900 as a travel guide to encourage French motorists to do more road trips. Besides petrol stations, mechanical workshops and hotels, the guide also listed places worth stopping for food. The guide was so successful that readers responded with letters of suggestion, and in 1926 Michelin started sending out anonymous reviewers to try restaurants and report the results, published in their guide. Based entirely on four criteria: food quality, mastery of technique, personality and the

60

consistency of the food, Michelin awards restaurants one to three stars: One star: A good place to stop on your journey, offering consistently high standard cuisine; Two stars: A restaurant worth a detour, indicating dishes of outstanding quality; Three stars: A restaurant worth a special journey, having exceptional cuisine including distinctive dishes that are precisely executed, using superlative ingredients. Michelin also awards a ‘bib gourmand’ for quality food at a value price. While the term ‘Michelin Star’ is still seen as a hallmark of fine dining quality across Europe, parts of Asia and the Americas, rival ranking systems such as the World’s 50 Best Restaurants have arisen in the past 20 years, including parts of the world that The Michelin Guide does not reach. Australia is not only included in the World’s 50 Best Restaurants (with Victorian restaurants Attica and Brae being first to break into the list in 2017), but the global awards were held in Australia for the first time last year. We also have several of our own national awards.

One of Australia’s most highly-coveted culinary awards is inclusion in the Good Food Guide. Launched in Melbourne as The Age Good Food Guide in 1979, it slowly extended across other states. Now the 2018 Good Food Guide has became a single national award covering 500 restaurants around Australia. Researched and compiled by a team of respected food critics, this highly respected guide showcases the best restaurants, cafés and bars across Australia, listing and giving hats to the most accomplished establishments. “Our defining strength, and the reason people trust the Good Food Guide, is the independence of our critics,” says co-editor Myffy Rigby. “Our reviewers arrive unannounced and pay for their own meals. We’re stringent when it comes to judging. That means we look at service, ambience, X factor, and most importantly, food to award those all-important hats.” In 2018, five Gold Coast restaurants received 1 Hat: Mamasan Kitchen & Bar, Social Eating House, Kiyomi, Rick Shores, and The Fish House. JP Duitsch, co-owner of Mamasan Kitchen & Bar, expressed his delight at winning a hat in

both The Brisbane Times Good Food Guide 2017 and the national 2018 Good Food Guide. “To win a hat in our first year was very exciting and fun. To win it the second year just confirms to you that you are doing great things and that you’ve maintained the high standards required to achieve the award,” he says, adding that such awards are both humbling and affirmative. Chef hats are not only a measure of achievement for a restaurant but, by providing a dining guide, they can also lead to greater patronage and further success. “A hat not only gives you recognition, it also drives business; our phone rang off the hook with bookings the first couple of days,” JP adds. The national Good Food Guide joins a raft of other awards, some peer-nominated, others compiled by newspapers, magazines and commercial enterprises. According to JP, each one has their place in spotlighting talent and performance in the hospitality industry. “I think all awards are meaningful,” JP insists. “It means you’re getting noticed and people love what you do, which in turn makes us love what we do even more.”

WINE CELLAR

Mighty Mike Queenslander Mike Hayes has been named Australian Winemaker of the Year.

WORDS TONY HARPER

THIS ARTICLE was always going to be about the uniquely Australian blend of pinot noir and shiraz; the style championed in the early half of the 20th Century by Maurice O’Shea, owned until recently by the Hunter Valley, but suddenly spreading its wings with phenomenal results. But it will have to wait until another issue, because something extraordinary has happened: Mike Hayes – winemaker at Symphony Hill, Ballandean, Queensland, has been named Australian Winemaker of the Year by the Australian Society of Viticulture and Oenology (ASVO). It’s a big deal. Mike is a Queensland boy, in fact he is a Granite Belt boy (born and raised; big family) who travelled to earn his winemaking stripes but came back to the region to cement his career. He has seen it mature from a wine-producing region based on back-yard, table-grape philosophies

64

to what it is today – a small, focused collection of producers with some stellar wines in their mix. “I began on the Granite Belt in 1979,” explains Mike. “Back then wine growing was done using table-grape technique; picked green and overcropped. Of course the wines were poor. “Returning in the 1990’s people had begun to make wines properly – refrigeration, selected yeasts, properly grown grapes (good leaf to fruit ratio, balanced vines, and SOIL. Respect the soil and the soil respects you).” Asked where he sees the region in a decade or two he is typical Mike Hayes – no punches pulled, big visions. “On top of the world stage. I’m serious when I say that. “Our elevation coupled with granitic soils will deliver wines of fine, truly elegant characters. The wines will become more expensive because

of our inability to mass-produce, but that’s ok, because they will come from a top quality wine region, sought globally.” Anyone who has ever travelled to the region and bent down to look at the soils will know about the granitic stuff. I have stood at Boireann (one of the stars of the region) and filled my hand with granite sand, its grains the size of shotgun pellets. Mike talks about the differing soils around the area, the complexities and nuances that shape the various sub-districts: it’s like a lesson in Burgundy, and it flies way over my head. But it helps explain the nuances of the various sub-districts (altitude, of course, is the other key factor) and underpins the characters that define the Granite Belt wines. It has only been five years between big awards for Mike Hayes.

In 2012 he won a Churchill Fellowship and as a result, tripped around Europe looking at grape varieties. And I’m not talking about strolling through the Burgundy vineyards oohing and aahing about chardonnay clones and the perfume of pinot noir. He investigated 650 varieties across 50 grape-growing regions spanning Italy, Spain, Portugal, France, Austria, Switzerland and Germany. 650! Exactly what the Churchill Fellowship is, I wasn’t sure (I just knew it sounded impressive), so I asked … “It was set up in 1963 by Winston Churchill, to allow a person to travel and increase their knowledge and strengthen their industry.” And it isn’t industry specific: you can apply if you are an arborist, a chef, a cheese-maker or someone trying to save frogs from extinction. “I applied to look at different varietie and it made me realise that sense of place is more important than trying to force a popular variety. Lieu-dit [a French toponymic term for a small geographical area bearing a traditional name] – Golden Grove Nero d’Avola for example.” What he means is some varieties become rooted in certain areas, and they shape the region as much as the region shapes the wine. And no matter how hard you might try to emulate those wines (or that region) elsewhere, it ain’t going to happen. Just like you can go and spend a truck load of money decking your house out with Provencale antiques, but it still won’t be the same as living in Provence. Mike is winemaker at Symphony Hill – one of the stars of the Granite Belt – and has been there, instrumental in its planning, conception and success, since the beginning. He also crafts wines in the Symphony Hill winery for dozens of other producers too small to have their own winery. And despite the fact that he makes Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Chardonnay for both Symphony Hill and others, he is a keen advocate of the Mediterranean varieties: it simply makes sense. His bucket list might sound a little alien – Fiano, Vermentino, Gewurztraminer, Moscato Giallo, Saperavi, Lagrein, Nero d’Avola, Negroamaro and Pinotage. Those are the varieties he likes to grow and make. To drink – Gewurztraminer and Lagrein. Not being part of the ASVO committee it’s hard to know exactly why Mike won the award – was it the wines he has made, the stuff he learned and keeps passing on from his Churchill travels, the apparently endless energy he expends helping others (I’ll digress for a tick and give you a prime example. All Hallows P&F came up with an idea for a fundraiser: ask for 50 kilograms of grapes from ten different Queensland growers and make one barrel of wine to be auctioned. Ten growers agreed, but the 2017 season ended badly and only one kicked in. Mike donated a full barrel of shiraz from his own collection) or a muddy mix of all of the above. I think it’s the latter, but the why is almost immaterial. The win is great for the Queensland wine-growing community, and in some respects a bold decision by the ASVO. But it also a win that is perfectly well deserved and absolutely about time.

WELL TRAVELLED

Epicurean haven With a focus on fresh food and luxurious experiences, Spicers Hidden Vale is a feast for the senses.

WORDS KIRSTY CARBERRY

SITTING HAVING BREAKFAST on the verandah looking out at the rain steadily falling, I’m thinking that there really is no better place to be on a wet Saturday morning. Being born and raised in Scotland – and emigrating to Queensland particularly because of the pull of the sunshine – a dull and rainy day can quite often spiral me into a state of depression. But not here. Surrounded by luxurious Heritage décor and pampered by first-class service, this was going to be a particularly good weekend. Spicers has always been on my radar but delegated to one of those ‘next time’ places to go – as a treat or for a special occasion. This was a last-minute decision. I was asked if I wanted to participate in an event that Spicers Hidden Vale were hosting to promote the Flavours of Summer Gourmet Festival being held in January. Since it seemed to involve a variety of food and wine experiences, I quickly cleared the diary of the mundane weekend chores and made myself available – those tasks could wait.

66

Just an hour and a half’s drive from the Gold Coast – or an hour from Brisbane – Spicers Hidden Vale is set in a majestically rustic setting spanning 12,000 acres of true Australian bush. As soon as you drive through the gates the stress is left behind. The picturesque tree-lined driveway taking you up to the homestead acts as an instant pre-therapy relaxant – it’s like it was a deliberate part of the original design. We were already late for the lawn games, and running seriously close to missing out on the gin masterclass – and that wasn’t an option. So, after checking-in and being shown on the map where our room was located among the various standalone cottages scattered throughout the grounds, we followed a paved cobble path which led us to our overnight accommodation. Now don’t get me wrong, I’ve been lucky enough to stay in some lovely rooms before, but this was something different. From the outside, it looked like a quaint old fairy tale cottage, but on the inside it was quite the suite fit for a president: spacious, beautifully

furnished and thoughtfully restored to blend with its historic past. (We subsequently found out that this building was the original 1908 homestead’s kitchen and is all that remains after the 1921 fire that destroyed the building). But gin was calling and we had to find the croquet lawn where the class was being held. With map in hand, we followed the path past the homestead and on towards the tennis court and croquet lawn where our group was already assembled. We were cheerfully greeted with the offer of a beer or glass of champagne but my eyes were homing in on what was taking place in the background. I could see an exotic blue-coloured bottle which was obviously the showpiece – Ink Gin by Husk Distillers – my mouth was getting dry. As if by magic, a freshly made cocktail appeared on a tray in front of me. One sip. I closed my eyes and mentally filed all the stress and hard work that had happened in the past week. It was now time to indulge myself.

The rest of Friday evening was spent exploring and following those subtly-lit paved paths weaving (and that was nothing to do with the gin) between the quaint colonial buildings. Our senses were kick-started pool-side with canapés and Aperol spritzers – this was just the warm-up act though, we then went on to an epicurean feast at the barn. The courtyard outside the barn is framed by the most magnificent strategically placed tree. Lit by rows of fairy lights above a long, beautifully rustic and country-dressed table, eager guests were enjoying a gathering in what could easily have been taking place in Europe on a balmy summer evening. Ash Martin, the award-winning Head Chef, was cooking up a storm on the open fires – we were about to feast on local produce showcasing what our regional farmers and suppliers have on hand. Over the next few hours we were served the most exquisitely-cooked dishes while drinking fine wines, chatting with new friends and listening to the subtle sounds of live music. >>

I was wondering how such an indulgent evening could possibly be finished, but as we moved on to the homestead garden for the open-air moonlight cinema, the beanbags were ready and waiting – perfect. I slumped in, wrapped the blanket around me and for the next hour enjoyed freshly made butter-soaked salted popcorn and lost myself in the food-inspired movie. One of my interests is good food – and I mean ‘good’ food. I take a lot of care to make sure I eat organically when I can – not only for the obvious health benefits, but also because it tastes like it is supposed to taste, not just looking like what it is supposed to look like. After breakfast the next morning, we were treated to a tour of the market garden. Ash enthusiastically explained that they grow seasonal vegetables that are hand-picked by the chefs, they don’t spray, and even their kangaroo deterrent was made from an onion-based creation

68

cooked in the kitchen. Food scraps are either fed to the pigs or turned into compost. There is a smoking hut – the homemade smoked butter is delectable – and a preserving shed, all of which you can visit and see what concoctions are being created. Nothing is wasted and whatever fruit or vegetable is in season Ash ensures there is a dish, drink or other use for it. (Beware if you go in mango season, the tree next to the infinity pool was laden when we were there and I think mango daiquiris may be in order). After a cheese and bubbles masterclass in the shed, hosted by the very knowledgeable Peter Gross, one of Australia’s rare affineurs, we were led to the iconic Homage restaurant in the homestead for our long lunch. Again, Ash and his talented team proved why Spicers Hidden Vale is as special as it is, serving us with a fresh and seasonal three-course degustation meal showcasing what the property and local region has to offer.

Spicers Hidden Vale has so much more to enjoy – maybe next time I will try some of the many outdoor activities available – from sedate walking trails and self-guided nature walks to a plethora of mountain bike tracks for the more adventurous. There is also a wildlife centre providing research, breeding and releasing of native wildlife in partnership with the University of Queensland which is not open to the public but guests are exclusively invited to tour. One of my neighbours once told me that if you have green frogs in your garden it means that your ‘eco-balance’ is perfect … and during my stay I admired a lot of little (and big) green frogs patiently going about their business around the grounds. Needless to say, my first experience of a Spicers resort was like a little piece of heaven on earth – even the frogs think so.

WELL TRAVELLED

Start spreadin’ the news Located across the Hudson River from Manhattan, Hoboken, N.J. is much more than just the birthplace of Frank Sinatra.

WORDS PAUL PRENDERGAST

MORE OFTEN THAN NOT, travel can throw up some pleasant surprises in places you least expect. And in this case, I didn’t quite know what to expect when visiting New Jersey last year. I’m confident most locals would agree it is not generally regarded as an international tourism hotspot, certainly not by comparison to its venerable neighbour, New York City. I was originally drawn to Hoboken, just across the Hudson River from Manhattan, with nothing more than personal convenience in mind. Covering the golf at the bi-annual Presidents Cup matches was the primary purpose for this visit and Hoboken was just a few miles to the north of the host venue, the Liberty National course in Jersey City. I figured it to be an easier commute than crossing the river from Manhattan so, armed only with the knowledge of Hoboken’s link to Frank Sinatra, Carlo’s Bakery (from TV show Cake Boss fame) and the origins of baseball, we booked an apartment off 3rd St for the week ahead.

70

It proved to be an inspired decision because Hoboken, quite frankly, was a revelation and one of the highlights of a week in which the Internationals suffered a frightful drubbing at the hands of the Americans. Wandering Hoboken’s historic tree-lined streets of tidy brownstone homes – complete with the familiar external fire escapes so synonymous with the architectural style in New York – we were taken by the tranquillity of the spaces within this square mile precinct. The last blooms of Autumn (Fall) were still flourishing in gardens and planter boxes and the first decorations of Halloween were starting to appear here and there in the windows, on stairs and in shop fronts. While there is plenty of shopping, food and nightlife to be sampled along the busier main drag of Washington Street (my wife and daughter soon became regulars at Carlo’s) and the waterfront areas with their uninterrupted views of the Manhattan skyline, the true charm of Hoboken for us lay in a stroll a few blocks to the west.

By day, school children played in shaded communal parks, dogs were walked, squirrels danced about with unflagging energy, people were enjoying alfresco catch-ups with friends in one of the many small restaurants, cafés and Italian delis that seem to materialise discreetly on every corner. By night, families pushed strollers, people played pickup basketball, visited boutique galleries, joined in activities in art spaces or just generally enjoyed their good fortune in being able to live in this gentrified sanctuary adjacent to one of the world’s busiest cities. Best of all, Hoboken is just a 15-minute ride on the New Jersey Path train from the neon blindness of Times Square in Midtown, Manhattan. The enormous legacy of Frank Sinatra is impossible to ignore in this town. Ole’ Blue Eyes was born and raised in Hoboken and the community continues to pays homage to one of the 20th Century’s most influential entertainment icons.

Qualified Dental Specialist or a general dentist? It is for you to decide …

A star is embedded in the sidewalk outside his birthplace, parks and streets are dedicated to him and images from his long and colourful career adorn the walls of establishments everywhere. I dropped in to Luca Brasil’s Italian Deli on a quiet street corner for a quick bite on my way to the golf and drank in the framed Sinatra memorabilia that packed the walls, which included the famous police mugshots from a 1938 arrest. We had a similar experience at the acclaimed Leo’s Grandevous, where between the mouth-watering mussels with white wine entrée and my Lamb Bolognese, the waiter proudly remarked that ‘Sinatra used to come in here all the time’. The first game of baseball is said to have been played on the Elysian Fields of Hoboken in 1846 between the Knickerbockers and New Yorks. The fields are long gone but the location of the baseball diamond is marked with a plaque at home plate and base numbers on each corner of an intersection at the northern end of Washington St. Maxwell’s Bar has been a live music institution in the greater New York area for decades and the 3rd base on the diamond sits on the pavement immediately outside Maxwell’s front door. >>

Another of New Jersey’s favourite sons – Bruce Springsteen – filmed the music video for the hit ‘Glory Days’ on the tiny corner stage right there in Maxwell’s. Other quaint bars in leafy locales – like O’Nieal’s on Park and 4th – are reminiscent of pubs in Sydney’s Paddington area, for example, although the college football blaring out on big screens provided a constant reminder that you were on the other side of the world. The Italian heritage coursing through the veins of Hoboken provides a strong influence to the cuisine of the area but if a hankering for home calls, you might find solace in the Bluestone Lane café on Washington Street.

72

The Bluestone is run by Kat, a native of Perth who has relocated to the U.S., as have many other Aussie baristas who are making their mark in the city. The menu board offers up Vegemite toast as an option and it was comforting to be able to order a ‘Skinny Flat White’ or a ‘Long Black’ without dumbfounding everyone within earshot. With the Presidents Cup over, my family and I moved across to Manhattan to spend an extra week soaking up the sights and sounds of New York, criss-crossing the town to stay in different areas and experience as much of life in the city as we could.

On our final night spent drinking in the sunset views over NYC from a rooftop bar, our 18-year daughter was quizzed by a New York local on what part of the city she had enjoyed the most. Given we had explored and walked all over Midtown, Times Square, through Central Park, Greenwich Village, Chelsea, the Financial District and the Nolita areas, a response of ‘Hoboken’ was a surprise even to us. Hoboken can hardly be regarded as a ‘secret’ with a rich and varied history dating back to the 17th century, but it’s vibrancy, walkability and the variety of other attractions we experienced in just four days suggests it should be included on any itinerary when visiting the NYC area.

AT THE WHEEL

New year, new look Introducing the all-new Aston Martin V8 Vantage.

WORDS CHRIS NIXON

NOT MANY CARS can stay in production for 12 years and still look fabulous. Aston Martin’s 2005 V8 Vantage did, but the time has arrived at last for an all-new model. It’s tricky reinventing something so successful. The all-new model, which will make its public debut at the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne in late March, has kept the beautiful profile while changing the design completely. It’s more aggressive, perhaps acknowledging the number of younger buyers in its growing market. The body sides now have prominent scoops, which start with functional air outlets behind the front wheels. The nose retains the traditional Aston Martin shape, but is set lower and the tail features a prominent aerodynamic underbody diffuser and full-width LED lights.

76

In a welcome gesture to good taste, Aston Martin retains just a small, integrated rear spoiler instead of a separate wing. The new Vantage is 34mm shorter than a Porsche 911, the compact size confirming the maker’s intention that this will be a sports car rather than a GT in the model line-up. I was shown the Vantage at Southport’s Sunshine Aston Martin dealership last October during a world preview tour, but pledged to not reveal the details until its official launch. It looked a far more racy car on the outside, with a sumptuous interior exhibiting typical British hand-craftsmanship. Aston says the body design takes cues not from the road cars, but from the track-only Vulcan model, of which just 24 were to be built, and the DB10, built exclusively for James Bond to wreck in the 2014 film Spectre.

The new Vantage features a couple of breaks from tradition, apart from the bodywork. Most importantly, it now sports a MercedesBenz, 4.0 litre, twin-turbo V8 engine to replace the former non-turbo V8 that dated back to Aston Martin’s ownership by Ford and Jaguar. So, like almost every other performance car, the Vantage now forsakes a normally-aspirated engine for a smaller one with turbochargers while in pursuit of lower fuel consumption and emissions. But with 375 kiloWatts, the new car is substantially more powerful, which combined with a lighter aluminium chassis, promises to deliver reasonable petrol consumption around 10.5 litres per 100 kms and 314 kmh top speed. Car-spotters will notice the other change is the addition of the words ‘Aston Martin’ on the tail.

changing market … Australian deliveries of the new Vantage are expected from July. A price hasn’t been announced, but the maker’s Australian representative predicts around $300,000. The first one has been sold and I’m told it was to a 28-year-old who specified the new Lime Essence colour like the car pictured here.

AT THE WHEEL

Spoilt for choice Sales of the world’s best cars are booming right in our own backyard, writes Chris Nixon.

MORE than a few times I have commented in these pages about the increasing availability and popularity of the world’s best cars in our region. It’s a revelation for anyone with oil in their veins and it’s no longer unusual to see a menacing Lamborghini stopping the traffic, or even a collection of supercars at a local coffee-andcars morning. To prove this, the numbers are in on the sales of ultra-performance and ultra-luxury cars in Australia in the past year. While their total isn’t even a poofteenth of the almost 1.2 million new vehicles sold here in 2017, it’s impressive when you consider the cheapest might cost 10 times more than an average Hyundai and the most expensive, more than a million dollars. The national sales totals of a selection of top-end makes, below, make surprising reading: • Bentley 219 • Ferrari 210 • Aston Martin 144 • Lamborghini 122 • McLaren 116 • Rolls-Royce 45

78

With all represented by dealers in Brisbane or the Gold Coast, it’s a good chance many of these cars are now in the garages of readers of the Cove. The list doesn’t include Maserati, which sold 740 vehicles and is certainly exotic in my mind even though some would argue it is now pitched more at buyers of mainstream premium makes. Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, BMW, Range Rover and Audi, etc, also have individual models with price or performance in the ‘ultra’ range, but notionally these brands are in a different league because of their greater popularity. Among the six exclusive makes listed above, all but Lamborghini sold more cars in 2017 than in 2016.

That’s solid proof of not only a prosperous market but also of wealthy drivers’ changing tastes and demographics (plenty of younger sports car buyers). And there’s more to come this year, with the following models among those heading to a dealer near you: • Aston Martin: All-new V8 Vantage. See my separate story on the previous page. This will be a cracker sports car. Also coming, Vanquish S and a convertible DB11, the Volante. • B entley: Continental GT. As well as my personal favourite, the Conti GT remains Bentley’s biggest seller in Australia. The coming third-generation will give it another boost.

• Ferrari: Portofino replaces the California, but the concept is the same – Ferrari’s most accessible model with front engine and convertible hardtop. • Lamborghini: Urus, potentially the world’s fastest SUV and certainly the most spectacular-looking. • McLaren: Senna, limited edition of McLaren’s highest-performing sports car, dedicated to the late Brazilian Formula 1 champion. A blue-chip investment. • Rolls-Royce: All-new Phantom, the ultimate version of Rolls’ top model will cost close to a million dollars – before options.

Positive position A year of gains delivers some pleasant surprises for Gold Coast property. WORDS NICK NICHOLS

PRESTIGE homes and luxury apartments were among the Gold Coast’s top property performers in 2017, with Herron Todd White revealing that prices in these sectors pulled away strongly from the rest of the market. However, the property valuation group warned that signs of softness emerged in other sectors over the past 12 months as the Queensland market generally failed to meet more buoyant growth expectations. Much of that was due to the Brisbane inner-city apartment market heading into decline. “At the start of the year there were quite a few speculating it was ‘our turn’ in the Sunshine State,” said Herron Todd White in its latest Month in Review for December. “Its overall performance was positive, but lacklustre according to many. However, this sort of clunky statement doesn’t recognise the nuances of the market.” The report said there were ‘some very good news stories’ in Queensland property, including the Gold Coast which delivered surprises on the upside. One of them was the strength of demand for Gold Coast homes priced between $1.2 million and $5 million, leading to a surge in values of between 15 and 20 per cent over the past year. The gains were recorded in properties across the board, including homes on dry, waterfront and golf-front lots. The spike was two to three times the 7.7 per cent gain in the Gold Coast’s median house price in the past year. As it stands, the median price rise for the Coast was almost double the national average of 4.2 per cent for 2017. Luxury apartments also performed strongly, with Herron Todd White revealing those priced from $750,000 to $3 million recorded gains of about 10 per cent during the year.

It says typical family homes priced from $500,000 to $900,000 experienced a slowdown in sales volumes, although they are still holding firm at ‘increased strong price levels’. However, a residential land shortage has combined with rising demand to deliver healthy price gains of about 15 per cent for subdivided lots over the past year. The December snapshot of the Gold Coast market was broadly positive, with just one note of caution for new apartments in the sub-$650,000 price bracket. Decreased sales volumes for apartments in this price range, which usually targets investors, has led to developers offering ‘incentives and large sales commissions to real estate agents’. Overall, Herron Todd White reports that homes within easy reach of the beach experienced robust growth. “Suburbs with good proximity to Gold Coast beaches such as Palm Beach, Broadbeach, Miami and Burleigh Heads have seen continued strengthening values, as much as 35 per cent over the past three to four years,” it says. “The biggest surprise is how well the prestige market and beach suburbs are now performing with values pulling further away from lower price brackets and other non-beach locations.” The Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ) has identified Mermaid Beach as the Gold Coast’s best performer for house price growth, with the median jumping 9.9 per cent to $1.53 million in 2017. In trend terms, Herron Todd White sees the Gold Coast housing market approaching its peak, indicating that it may have capacity for further growth in the year ahead. However, the apartment market is now at its peak.

The REIQ credits the strength of the tourism sector for bolstering the coastal markets such as Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast. “When that sector grows it offers employment oppor tunities and this attracts workers who need somewhere to live,” said REIQ CEO Antonia Mercorella. Ray White Surfers Paradise CEO Andrew Bell said the Gold Coast was also benefitting from a broadening of its economic base. “There is tremendous confidence in the city due to its economic stability, the quantity and quality of local jobs on offer and steady population growth,” he said. “And that is something we see as continuing beyond the Commonwealth Games as the Coast’s economy continues to diversify into areas like education and medical services.” Mr Bell also said there were no signs of the roadblocks that had derailed the Gold Coast’s property market so spectacularly in the past. “We’re not seeing rampantly rising interest rates, high unemployment or recession,” he said. “None of these things are happening and all indications are that interest rates are likely to remain stable for most of 2018.” International and interstate buyers continue to be a ‘significant investor component’ in the Gold Coast market, says Herron Todd White. “Chinese buyers appeared to slow down, however seem to be back now with a reported increase in buyers also coming from Vietnam. “New Zealand investors are also significant, however perhaps not as strong as in previous years.” The confidence wave hitting the Gold Coast has also led to a spike in development applications to 5,360 in 2017, up from 4,900 in 2016. This is the first time the figure has breached 5,000.

A creative practice Bayden Goddard Design Architects is a creative firm with a deep commitment to the design process. WORDS RHONDA OXNAM

CREATIVITY AND INTEGRITY … according to Bayden Goddard these are two of the key principles behind the success of his Gold Coast-based practice, Bayden Goddard Design Architects (BGD Architects). “We’ve always prided ourselves on giving the clients time and attention,” he explains. “We don’t want to be a firm who just draws something up and then delivers the plans to the builder … we like to see the process right through to make sure the project comes to fruition exactly the way it was imagined. “At the end of the day we are architects and we want to be architects, so for us the whole procedure – from when you meet the client to understanding the brief and stimulating some creative thought – is a big part of what we do. “We also like to stay involved during the construction to make sure the client’s experience is an enjoyable one. “You are not going to get a more stressful period of your life than building your dream home so we try to manage that to make it as pleasant a process as possible – to the point where I like to consider the handover of the keys as a real champagne moment.

94

“It almost guts me when that doesn’t happen so we work very hard to try to create that moment.” Working hard is something Bayden is used too. Growing up on the Gold Coast before attending university in Brisbane, he was given an incredible (yet daunting) opportunity straight after graduation. “The practice I was working with did a design competition and won a resort project in Brunei for the Royal family. “I got sent up there as a very, very green graduate and ended up spending the next five years of my life on that,” he says. “Then I came back to the Gold Coast and got involved with the practice I had done some of my intern work with, before I decided to go out on my own.” That was almost two decades ago, and BGD Architects remains one of the Gold Coast’s most successful architecture firms. “Peter Fraser was a founding member of the office and Marcus Rosner joined us shortly after as a student … both are still here which is a good reflection on the practice’s stability,” Bayden explains. “We were very lucky. About the same time we started the practice some friends were involved

in a large company float here on the Gold Coast which gave us a really fractured client base. “That was fortunate for us in that we ended up with a mixture of doctors, lawyers and other professionals and it gave us the ability to design some of the most prestigious homes on the Gold Coast.” Building on that early success, the practice continued to grow until the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) forced them to reconsider their position. “Before the GFC we grew and it probably got a bit out of control … with that much success you lose track of your core values,” he says. “So the GFC was actually positive for us because it brought briefs and client expectations back to being more realistic. “We did some fantastic, relatively economical work during that period which was a real eye opener and a real refresher for the practice. “We chose post-GFC not to grow the practice beyond a certain size which has meant the whole process is now more rewarding. “It actually feels like a proper process, rather than just a job.” This does not mean they have downsized their reach, with current projects taking them from the Victorian peninsular to the French countryside.

QUALITY CUSTOM SHUTTERS & BLINDS YEARS

“We are working on a fabulous house almost on the edge of a cliff in Melbourne as well as a number of projects in Bondi … and the furthest afield at the moment is in Vence, which is in the hills above Nice. “We are being invited by clients in the southern states to take our Queensland lifestyle to them … what they want is that enviable holiday feel … the pool areas, the entertainment spaces, the barbecues, the relaxed Saturday/Sunday afternoons.” Closer to home, BGD Architects have projects under construction across the breadth of the Coast, including several at Sanctuary Cove. “Our reputation tends to be for the larger projects but we also do a lot of homes in the sub-one million category as well. “In actual fact we cover the whole gamut … we are working on 400 metre blocks down at Mermaid Waters right through to the very, very high end. “We also have an alter ego in that we do a lot of club, restaurant and commercial projects as well.” But no matter how big or small the project, there is one overriding tenet Bayden brings to the table. “I’d rather have a 10 per cent smaller house and make it feel 100 per cent better on the land. It is important to have a garden and take into account the overviewing of adjoining properties, the prevailing winds, the way the sun tracks … “If you listen, every block tells you a story and that always tends to be our starting point.”

Super star From rooftop bars to native honey, The Star Gold Coast is continuing its multi-million dollar transformation. The Star Gold Coast redevelopment The Star Gold Coast’s current transformation heralds a new era for the property and forms part of crucial investment in the region ahead of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games. Nine new food and beverage offerings, 596 refurbished hotel rooms and a luxury poolside experience are among the already completed offerings, while The Darling, a new luxury suite hotel and rooftop destination, will form the centrepiece of the redevelopment.
A highly anticipated new Sports Bar will also open in the coming months when the existing building connects to The Darling.
Adding to the excitement of the current development is the planned addition of the first mixed use residential apartment and hotel tower on Broadbeach Island. Pending successful pre-sales of The Star Residences, the 53-storey tower could be the first of up to five within a future master plan for the property as part of a joint venture with renowned Hong Kong-based partners Chow Tai Fook and Far East Consortium.
Together, the refurbishments of the existing property, and the development of both The Darling and the proposed hotel and residential tower would involve an investment of up to $850 million.

Native honey A ground-breaking partnership between the local Aboriginal community and The Star Entertainment Group will see ‘sugarbag’ native bee honey harvested on North Stradbroke Island. The Quandamooka Yoolooburrabee Aboriginal Corporation (QYAC), representing the island’s Traditional Owners, the Quandamooka People, is working with The Star Gold Coast to install 32 native bee hives on the island, traditionally known as ‘Minjerribah’. Each hive is expected to generate up to 1kg of honey per year, which will be used by The Star Entertainment Group as an exclusive, signature ingredient in its menus as well as for gifts.

96

New food and beverage offerings The Star Gold Coast has boosted its expanding food and beverage offering by opening another two venues – the sophisticated Cherry bar and new dining space, Food Quarter. Operating seven days a week, from 5pm until late, Cherry offers a sumptuous setting, expert mixologists and designer drinks, while Food Quarter will serve as a more casual dining venue for guests. Residing in the area formerly occupied by J bar, Cherry’s fusion of velvets, lush fabrics and gold tones create a lavish space for guests in the heart of the action. Next door, Food Quarter’s fresh coastal palette and new open plan design create a bright and refreshing space. Elegant white quartz stone and bespoke textures have been incorporated to elevate the look and feel of the venue, while an open plan kitchen and extensive menu will enhance the overall guest experience. Both venues have been designed in partnership with multi-award winning Queensland architectural firm Brand & Slater who undertook the refurbishment of The Star’s Atrium Bar in late 2016, and will carry out the revitalisation of the property’s highly anticipated Sports Bar ahead of the Commonwealth Games.

New rooftop venue The Star Gold Coast continues to take dining and entertainment to world-class heights by joining forces with acclaimed Gold Coast restaurateur Simon Gloftis and entertainment guru Billy Cross for a stunning new rooftop restaurant and bar. Located on the top level of The Darling luxury suite hotel, the stylish new venue will welcome its first guests in March and will offer a superior dining and beverage experience and boast spectacular views. “Having already unveiled eight new food and beverage venues as part of the redevelopment, including awardwinning Kiyomi, Cucina Vivo and Garden Kitchen & Bar, the new restaurant and bar will further elevate our offering and cement our reputation as a leader on the dining scene,” The Star Entertainment Group Managing Director Queensland Geoff Hogg said. “A formidable power duo in Billy Cross and Simon Gloftis, combined with our world-class rooftop location and stunning Broadbeach skyline views, the restaurant and bar promises to be Queensland’s premier dining destination.”

The Darling and The Star Grand The Star Gold Coast has unveiled the names for the two hotels located on its Broadbeach Island property, as the iconic venue continues its transformation. The new luxury suite hotel currently taking shape at the front of the property will be known as The Darling, while The Star Gold Coast’s existing hotel will now be known as The Star Grand. The Darling at The Star Gold Coast is the second hotel in The Star Entertainment Group to adopt the boutique brand and will feature 57 luxury suites from 70 to 328 square metres in size, with butler service and the finest amenities and finishes. New signature bars and restaurants and world-class gaming facilities will assist in driving broader domestic and international appeal. Now identified as The Star Grand at The Star Gold Coast, the existing hotel has undergone an 18-month redevelopment to revitalise the property’s almost 600 rooms, one of the most comprehensive and highest value hotel refurbishments ever undertaken in Australia. An opulent Penthouse, lavish suites boasting spacious outdoor terraces, Executive Deluxe Rooms, and Superior Deluxe Rooms are among the enhanced offering, which are designed to align to the Gold Coast’s luxurious coastal lifestyle. Concept image for illustration purposes only.

Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games hotel packages In the lead up to the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, The Star Gold Coast – the first official partner of the Commonwealth Games – and the City has undergone an exciting period of transformation. We’ve seen substantial investment placed into our infrastructure and facilities, reinforcing the long-term prosperity of the Gold Coast as an international tourism leader and one of the nation’s fastest growing regions. Compact impact Gold Coast Home Designer Tim Roberts has over 30 years of experience in the building industry.

IF YOUR HOME has good bones and certain aspects you have grown to love why knock it down and rebuild? Gold Coast Designer Tim Roberts has been renovating high-end homes since he began his training some 30 years ago and says it is a rewarding feeling to take something you already appreciate and bring it into the 21st century. “Once clients realise the flexibility of the current spaces, where to add or subtract and how to embrace the new technologies and materials available, the options are endless. “It is easier to interpret a space, its function or aspect when you are able to stand in it,” he says. ‘Compact Impact’ Tim calls it. “I am no greenie but I do appreciate the natural environment we live in. Renovation involves craftsmen not concrete trucks. Skilled hands as against machines.

“On average the building industry has 30 per cent waste so if you can save by not doing a total re-build you are also doing your bit for the environment.” Tim grew up around boats and applies similar outward thinking to the design of his lifestyle homes. Whether it’s a sleek modern waterfront property or a stunning Hampton’s style rebuild, the one common denominator in all Tim’s projects is you would rarely know it was a renovation. “I don’t have a particular style,” Tim says. “Some designs start from one simple image, while others are inspired by the area or the home-owner’s wish-list. “I always work very closely with the client. It is our job as a team to create the dream of their perfect home.”

Beginning his training as a carpenter in Sydney, Tim went on to become a builder, boasting clients such as radio broadcaster Alan Jones – so you know he is fastidious when it comes to his craft. In 2000 Tim decided to focus solely on design. His work ranges from exclusive waterfront renovations for Channel 9’s Liz Hayes and Jim Waley in Sydney’s Palm Beach to a penthouse apartment for artist Charles Billich in Kings Cross. He has also worked on beachfront properties in Melbourne’s Brighton and Mornington Peninsula, as well as numerous properties in South East Queensland. Now based on the Gold Coast, Tim moved to the Hope Island area in 2017. “As creator of Sanctuary Cove Mike Gore stated ‘it is the ultimate place to live’,” says Tim.

FACTS & FIGURES

Keep it equal Same-sex marriage a side-step for Family Law writes Alice Drummond, Partner and Accredited Specialist in Family Law at Ramsden Lawyers. IF YOU HAVE been living under a rock for the past six months, it might surprise you to learn that, as at 7 December 2017, Australia has joined 25 other countries to legalise same-sex marriage. This is a proud time for all Australian residents, who have said ‘yes’ to so much more than just same-sex marriage. We have inadvertently cultivated a national ‘yes’ to equality, ‘yes’ to our democratic rights, ‘yes’ to future generations that accept and support individuality. In a practical sense, the legalisation of samesex marriage may cause some confusion about how the rights that same-sex couples have differed (if at all). Having specialised exclusively in Family Law for over ten years, I would argue that the legalisation of same-sex marriage in Australia has not really changed the rights that same-sex couples have – but there are some changes … and most of them are really wonderful. What does legalising same-sex marriage mean practically? It means, quite literally, that same-sex couples can now get married. On 7 December 2017 the Marriage Amendment (Definition and Religious Freedoms) Bill 2017 (Cth) was passed which effectively redefines marriage in Australia as “the union of 2 people to the exclusion of all others, voluntarily entered into for life.” As of 9 December 2017, same-sex couples have the same liberty as a heterosexual couple to lodge their Notice of Intended Marriage.

102

This commences the one-month minimum wait period required before they can take their marriage vows. Allowing same-sex couples to participate in a marriage ceremony is an incredible step forward for equality; but what does it actually mean for Australian Family Law and the rights and obligations of a married same-sex couple upon the breakdown of |their relationship? Prior to December 2017, same-sex couples had the same rights as married couples under the Family Law Act by virtue of being in a de facto relationship with their spouse. As of today, those rights haven’t changed. Generally speaking, same-sex couples as well as heterosexual couples can: (a) bring an application for orders relating to: (i) parenting arrangements for children to the relationship; (ii) t he division of matrimonial assets, liabilities and financial resources upon the dissolution of a relationship; (iii) spousal maintenance; (b) enter into parenting orders by consent with their former spouse (to assist with promoting a healthy co-parenting relationship moving forward); (c) enter into property and/or maintenance orders by consent with their former spouse (to bring finality to their financial relationship following the breakdown of the relationship);

(d) protect their assets before and/or during the relationship by entering into financial agreements (colloquially known as ‘prenuptial agreements’ or ‘prenups’). Having said that, since 9 December 2017 there are changes that affect married same-sex couples. Here are some examples: • Australia will recognise the existing and future same-sex marriages which are solemnised overseas under the law of a foreign country, provided that foreign country is a country that recognises same-sexed marriage. • Same-sex couples can now divorce. • The non-biological parent of a child born into a same-sex relationship is deemed to be the legal parent of the child. • For the purposes of seeking a property order in a court, there will be no need to prove that a relationship exists as the marriage certificate provides that evidence. • Historically, if one partner died, then the other often faced difficulties with hospitals, insurances etc. Married same-sex couples will no longer have to face these obstacles. At Ramsden Lawyers, our Family Law team specialise in pre-nuptial and postnuptial arrangements for all de facto and married couples. Our team are focused on working with you collaboratively to assist our client’s through what is an emotionally trying time.

SPORT REPORT

Golden partnership Rolex and golf: a partnership based on shared values.

TURN THE CLOCKS back to 1967 and the world was a very different place. A pioneering prototype of the Concorde supersonic aircraft was first unveiled in France, and Christiaan Barnard performed the first heart transplant in South Africa, helping to pioneer a medical procedure that would go on to save countless lives. The year also marked the beginning of a significant new relationship between Rolex and the sport of golf. A relationship that, in its solid continuity, as well as its breadth and depth, has transcended the often-fickle realm of sports sponsorship. Over 50 years have gone by since the alliance first began, a half century of steadfast commitment and instrumental support. In the 1960s, professional golf was experiencing a renaissance courtesy of an American whose domination of the sport, coupled with his disarming charisma and charm, would change the game for generations to come. With a playing career that spanned 30 years at the very top of the game, Arnold Palmer won seven of the sport’s Major championships and had more than 90 professional wins. At the same time that he was at the pinnacle of his career, Rolex was keen to strengthen its association with golf. Naturally, he was the perfect fit to become the brand’s first Testimonee in golf and so began an enduring partnership that has developed into one that spans the globe and extends to golfers of all ages and abilities, exemplifying the passion Rolex has for the sport.

104

“It's been one of the best and most compatible relationships that I have had in my life,” Arnold once said of his abiding partnership with Rolex. “There's far more to the relationship than I could ever tell you. Rolex has done so many great things over the years that have been of tangible benefit to golf as a sport.” The bond between Rolex and golf has evolved through pivotal partnerships that have cemented Rolex’s place at the heart of the game. In the 1970s and 1980s, Rolex added prestigious tournaments The Open and the U.S. Open; guardians of the traditions and rules of the game The R&A and USGA; as well as the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) and the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA), to its growing number of golf partners. Rolex’s relationship with golf was described best by one of the most influential men in the sport – Peter Dawson during his tenure as Chief Executive of The R&A. “Through its historic and unwavering support, Rolex has become part of the fabric of golf, from supporting the amateur game to increasing awareness of The Rules, on through an association with golf’s original Major to presenting the Senior Open. “No other brand I can think of is more globally and passionately involved in our sport. “The far-reaching commitment of Rolex is deeply rooted in promoting and developing the game worldwide, from grassroots programs through to Major championships and elite players.”

Rolex is renowned worldwide for reliability, precision and uncompromising quality, attributes the brand recognises in each of its Testimonees. In the mid-1960s, a dynamic trio known as The Big Three – made up of Palmer, American Jack Nicklaus and South Africa’s Gary Player – had become the vanguard of the world game. Both Nicklaus and Player joined the Rolex family around the same time as Palmer, where they remain today. The triumvirate challenged each other with their equal stature, skill and endeavour at almost every hole, at almost every tournament. Gary Player secured nine Major wins while Jack Nicklaus’s accumulation of 18 Major titles remains unsurpassed at the very summit of the game. “With Arnold and Jack, we all wanted to win so badly, and we had this wonderful rivalry and competition among the three of us,” Gary said. “But, at the same time, when one of us won, the other two would put their hand out and say, ‘Well done, you beat me today, but I’ll get you tomorrow.’ It was a very healthy rivalry, and it was a rivalry of gentlemanly conduct.” As modern icons of the game, The Big Three have each expressed their deep admiration for Rolex’s support of golf. Following a trip to Geneva where he received an up-close look at the inner workings of Rolex, Player said: “I’ve worked with a lot of different companies over my lifetime. Everything in business is negotiable except quality. That exemplifies Rolex – quality.

SUBSCRIBE NOW Only $40* for one year (6 issues).

“I have always tried to surround myself with iconic brands. Rolex has been involved with golf for a long time, and represented some of the greatest ever players. It was a natural fit.” In the same way that a Rolex wristwatch may be a treasured heirloom, passed down the generations, the legacy of The Big Three has inspired generations of golfers, who through their success, do the same for those that follow them. Commenting on the current crop of young players at the forefront of the sport, one of the best female golfers in history, Annika Sörenstam, said: “Golf goes through cycles. Jordan [Spieth], Rickie [Fowler] and Jason [Day] are fun personalities and powerful players as well as quality individuals. “There is certainly a new generation emerging and I feel golf is in good hands”. These golfers are part of a burgeoning group of young, aspirational players who, like The Big Three before them, confidently go about their business with integrity, maturity and respect. These are the Rolex New Guard – a new generation of players who want to assert their authority on the sport and in doing so inspire future generations of athletes to follow them. Just as for the past five decades Rolex has grown its relationship with golf, there is every intention of continuing this commitment for the long term. Their anniversary year also celebrated the start of the Rolex Series – a new alliance between leading tournaments created to strengthen the European Tour’s international schedule from the 2017 season onwards. “The Rolex Series will celebrate the highest quality of golf and the international spirit of the game, qualities that Rolex and the European Tour strengthen with this announcement. We are tremendously proud to have Rolex as our partner in this exciting new venture and we thank them for their continued support,” said Keith Pelley, Chief Executive of the European Tour. Winding the clock forward, 50 years from now, one thing we can count on for sure, with a century of Rolex’s perpetual pursuit of precision and excellence, as well as its significant support of golf for the past five decades, is that the sport will be as prominent and prosperous as ever.

Arts Projects Australia in association with QPAC presents The Manganiyar Seduction. One of the most original and mesmerising live performances on earth, The Manganiyar Seduction is a visually and musically stunning masterpiece where 40 musicians from three generations of Manganiyars perform in a 36-windowed ‘jewel box’, with the songs slowly building to the spine-tingling climax heralded by an sumptuous light show as all the pods glow and pulsate along with the musical rhythms.

A standout event on the Australian Triathlon Calendar, the festival features the Mooloolaba ITU Triathlon World Cup, which will see the world’s best ITU triathletes in action. There is also something for the whole family including the ASICS Mooloolaba Twilight five kilometre run, Mooloolaba one kilometre Ocean Swim, Mooloolaba Superkidz Triathlon and the Special Tri.

After emerging from the wilderness with their first album in five years, indie heroes Grizzly Bear will play Queensland Performing Arts Centre’s Concert Hall for one night only. Breaking onto the scene in the noughties, when indie rock was on a nose-bleeding trajectory, the Brooklyn-based band have spent the past decade creeping up Top 10 lists and headlining festivals around the world.

AQUARIUS 21 Jan – 19 Feb

The Aquarian solar eclipse on February 16th suggests you are ready for considerable change in your life. Financial decisions may be the turning point. For some, though, the next two months will be all about deepening a relationship. However, eclipses can mean the end of a phase, when ties must be broken for the sake of personal growth. You’ll enjoy updating your appearance.

GEMINI 22 May – 21 Jun

LIBRA 24 Sept – 23 Oct

PISCES 20 Feb – 20 Mar

CANCER 22 Jun – 23 Jul

Over the next two months, you’ll feel motivated to consider new ways to share joint duties, responsibilities and finances. If you’re already in a partnership (business or personal), you may deepen your ties – or decide to begin afresh with a clean slate. Finalise new financial arrangements before mid-March to avoid the chance you’ll need to revise your plans at a later date.

SCORPIO 24 Oct – 22 Nov

Venus will be in Pisces from February 11th, prompting you to look for meaning in life and to fine-tune your sense of purpose. There’s no better time than the present to pursue activities that resonate with you on a deep level. However, it’s vital you are realistic about your endeavours, or the next two months could prove disappointing as you pursue ideals rather than goals.

ARIES 21 Mar – 20 Apr

LEO 24 Jul – 23 Aug

SAGITTARIUS 23 Nov – 22 Dec

TAURUS 21 Apr – 21 May

VIRGO 24 Aug – 23 Sept

CAPRICORN 23 Dec – 20 Jan

Gaining more meaning and satisfaction in life will appeal to you over the next two months. For some, this will involve a deepening interest in mysticism and spirituality. You’ll enjoy the chance to dream a little at work; to consider new projects where you will find more self-expression. The solar eclipse in February could open exciting doors of exploration, teaching or study.

Pace yourself in February; take care of health and wellbeing. Once the sun will be in Aries from March 21st, you’ll appreciate a boost in energy levels, especially if you have over-extended yourself though hard work and upbeat projects early on in the year. The full moon and blue moon on March 31st will spark a new relationship cycle. If you’re single, you may meet someone now.

The solar eclipse on February 16th suggests considerable developments in your personal life, especially if you were born mid-August. You may be surprised by a turn of events or feel the need for more self-expression in your relationship. Singles could meet someone from out of the blue. A business relationship or financial matter may also turn a corner at this time.

Jupiter in your love sector will encourage you to follow your heart and your dreams. Once it turns retrograde on March 9th you’ll get the chance to consolidate recent decisions and the changes they have produced, enabling you to slow the pace slightly and to regroup. Finances will improve as you sail forward with adventurous projects, so don’t give up your hopes and dreams.

Prepare for a considerable groundswell of developments that will encourage you to turn a corner, either at work or health-wise, leaving bad habits behind. The next two months will be ideal for a detox and a healthy new fitness regime; and to consider new ways to boost vitality. The Virgo full moon on March 2nd will be an especially favourable time to reinvent yourself.

The solar eclipse on February 16th signals the opportunity to make changes at home, with family or property, so if any of these areas seem hum drum now, new inspiration should revitalise these areas over the next two months. It’s important to be realistic about finances, as a lean period may arise unless you can put in place a clever budget that builds wealth.

February and March are excellent for consolidating the progress you’ve made over the past year, and to plan ahead. Your sign’s ruler, Jupiter, will turn retrograde on March 9th, and this will stimulate a little introspection and the chance to set those things right that may have gone awry – and to regain faith both in yourself and in the universe at large.

You’ll appreciate the opportunity to dream big in February and March and, with energetic and upbeat Mars in your sign from March 18th onwards, you will enjoy a true boost in energy levels that will help you to tackle logistics and to get ahead. Try to get new projects up and running before March 9th to avoid having to revise at a later date what you have already put in place.
