Editor’s letter FROM THE SIX-PAGE Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show 30th Anniversary special to a preview of this year’s MercedesBenz Fashion Festival Brisbane, this edition is all about keeping you busy and entertained. If you are looking for a bespoke cultural experience, I highly recommend the Ballet at Spicers events. You will find more information in the Entertainment section along with details of the ever-popular Gold Coast Polo by the Sea which is taking place in June. If you are in Brisbane, or planning a visit to the state’s capital, there is much to look forward to there as well. Stunning new restaurant, Black Hide by Gambaro, is opening at the Treasury, acclaimed Broadway hit Beautiful: The Carole King Musical is coming to QPAC and the luxurious Emporium Hotel South Bank will launch mid-year. Of course, with all these social engagements it is important to step out in style.

That’s where our Looking Good section comes on board with a showcase of the latest Men’s and Women’s designer fashions from Harrolds that is guaranteed to have you impressing your friends whether in the marquees, at the theatre or on the water. In other news, Tony gets hands on at Victoria’s Oakridge Winery, Chris test drives the new Ferrari GTC4 Lusso T, Marj uncovers the delicious tastes of Tasmania and I head to New Zealand’s South Island for a spot of R&R. And our Prestige Property section continues to grow, with pages and pages of stunning homes from the broadwater to the hinterland. Oh, and I almost forgot, the competition prize for this edition is an inner city escape at the iconic Stamford Plaza Brisbane and our headline act is none other than award-winning actor Sam Neill. Perhaps a night out at the movies should be on the calendar as well.

I am Sam With a career spanning almost five decades, New Zealand actor Sam Neill continues to enthrall audiences across the globe.

In Store Now

Stunning, unique, one off designs in New Jewellery. Vintage and Antique Jewellery. WORDS ROBBIE COLLIN / THE TELEGRAPH / THE INTERVIEW PEOPLE

SAM NEILL’S acting career recently broke the 80-film barrier – but until now, he has never appeared in a western. In Warwick Thornton’s Sweet Country, the New Zealand actor plays a missionary making a new life for himself on the Australian frontier in the 1920s. He is drawn into the search for an Aboriginal stockman, Sam Kelly, who against a backdrop of simmering racial tension becomes implicated in the death of a white farmer. On the morning of Sweet Country’s world premiere at the Venice Film Festival, I sat down with Neill in a quiet courtyard of the city’s Excelsior Hotel to discuss the film, and how he found its provocative story striking all kinds of chords with his own life and beliefs. From there, it was only a short conversational stroll to some

Natural Emerald & Diamond ring

other deeply serious topics, including wine, comedy, his disastrous James Bond audition, and Jurassic Park.

NOT AVAILABLE ONLINE

The Australian landscape and climate play such a central role in Sweet Country. In one scene, there’s a rainbow just hanging in the sky above your character’s head. Did that actually happen? That was absolutely real. And when opportunities like that present themselves, you have to seize them with both cameras. We certainly didn’t have the money for a CGI rainbow. You know, it barely rains out near Alice Springs, and while we were there we had a downpour like I’d never seen it. A once-everyten-years thing. We were driving back from set and what had been dips in the road that morning had become pools of water so deep they came halfway up the doors of our Land Rovers. But nothing is done by half measures in Australia. I mean, talk about an upside-down world. Everything is entirely different from anything I’m familiar with at all: I was born in the UK, I live in a green country, New Zealand, and faced with the enormity, the aridity, the profound age of this weathered place, I was in a state of agog-ment. Is that a word? It’ll do for now.

For subscriptions please call +61 5577 9499

It’s a beautiful landscape, but a deadly one too. Alice is right in the middle of Australia, and we were never more than two hours away from there, and yet we were able to shoot everything you see in the movie. But the gorge where our characters’ search party meets the Aboriginal warriors – in that same gorge, a few weeks after we left it, a German couple were there on holiday, went walking, got lost, and died of dehydration. The temperatures there hit more than 40 degrees. They left Hamburg, flew to Australia, then to Alice, then travelled to the gorge, and they were dead within 48 hours of leaving Germany. >>

The film pulls no punches in its depiction of the tensions between Aboriginal Australians and white settlers, yet it doesn’t feel like a ‘message movie’. Did you feel duty-bound to make the film in a way that would address this still very live issue? It’s all very complex, particularly because the story is based on something that actually happened in Central Australia in the 1920s. [The film’s lead character, Sam Kelly, played by Hamilton Morris, is based on an indigenous stockman from the Northern Territory called Wilaberta Jack: if you want to remain spoiler-free, don’t look him up yet.] Look: at the end of the day it’s a movie, it’s a western, it’s entertainment. But anything that touches on the relationship between white settlers and the traditional owners of that land will have a political dimension to it.

Australian history did not begin in 1770. It’s widely accepted that Aboriginal people have been there for 80,000 years, and there’s a chap currently working on a theory that it may have been 125,000 years. So we are talking about a presence there 123,000 years before Christ. And theirs is a fascinating culture, one that treads lightly on its environment, that cares for its country and its community, and that saw no reason to build great monuments or buildings because they lived in harmony with their surroundings. And this film deals with a very violent episode in which all of these things are impacted.

… or good cowboys and bad Indians. My first encounter with westerns was through Roy Rodgers, where things were always pretty clear-cut, if not clean-cut. But Leone and Clint signalled a sea change. And I suppose this film takes certain tropes from those films and turns them upside down again. I think if there’s a single thread running through my work, it’s that I’ve always looked for the dark side in bright characters, or some brightness in dark characters, or some humour in someone who is leadenly serious. Because I think there’s no such thing as white hats or black hats.

NOT AVAILABLE ONLINE For subscriptions please call +61 5577 9499

How controversial is it for an Australian film to depict this kind of material so frankly? We are in the middle of a history war in Australia, just as America is. There was a Captain Cook monument defaced recently in Sydney’s Hyde Park, and that shocked me when I saw it – it’s a wonderful statue of Cook, whom I personally admire. But I know he didn’t discover Australia, yet on the base of this statue it says ‘Discovered these territories, 1770’.

30

You’ve played characters with cowboy-ish tendencies before but this is your first fullblooded western? I’ve always loved them. I ran into Clint Eastwood a few years ago, and we were chatting away, and I said, ‘Clint, you know, I’ve made a lot of films but never a western, and it’s a bit of an unrealised ambition’. And he demystified it totally. He said, ‘You just wear a big hat and squint a bit’.

There’s something of his hard-bitten westerns with Sergio Leone in Sweet Country, I think – particularly the idea that it’s possible that the morality of this frontier world isn’t as simple as white hats and black hats …

As well as acting, for the last 25 years you’ve been producing wine in New Zealand at your vineyard Two Paddocks. Has that business given you some kind of respect for the land? Oh yeah. I mean, without sounding like a wanker – though I appreciate I probably sounded like a wanker from the word go – I love the Aboriginal idea that you don’t own country, country owns you. And increasingly that’s how I feel about my farm: it’s the place in the world that doesn’t belong to me, but I belong to it. I’m very happy in the slow rhythm of life in that place. >>

Architecture. Interior Design. Innovation. a unique expression of space and form

On your Twitter and Instagram accounts you often post affectionate pictures of your livestock, many of which seem to be named after other actors. How did that start? I don’t know, really. But I’ve found that if you’ve got a new calf called Laura Dern, with the best will in the world, you can’t eat Laura Dern. [There is a long pause while Neill grins.] I’m not going to go there. But I only name them after friends I’ve worked with, really. Apart from Amy Schumer. I don’t know Amy Schumer, but there was a chicken that just struck me as being like Amy Schumer. I told her, ‘You’re Amy Schumer.’ And there was a blink of recognition. The New Zealand sense of humour seems to be having a bit of an international moment right now – not least thanks to Taika Waititi’s Thor: Ragnarok, in which you had a cameo after starring in his Hunt for the Wilderpeople the year beforehand. Can you pin down exactly what it is? I grew up thinking I didn’t come from a very funny country. There weren’t many comedians, apart from my good friend John Clarke, who died back in April. But then this new generation of people – Rhys Darby, The Flight of the Conchords boys, Taika Waititi – came along all at once, and were able to point out why we were funny, and suddenly it felt so obvious. But people my age often look back on growing up in New Zealand in the 1950s and 1960s as this deeply boring time, and we’ve been missing the bigger picture. One of the farmers in Sweet Country has what we’d identify now as post-traumatic stress disorder – he’s come out of the trenches of the First World War and is very, very damaged. And my parents’ generation who’d been bombed, or people like my father who’d fought in the Second

World War and seen things that people should never have to see in their lifetime – that entire generation was damaged by that. Just the sound of a car backfiring after that must have been alarming. So having been through all that, the dullness of a sleepy suburban afternoon in New Zealand must have seemed like all you could ever want. Many years ago, after Roger Moore left the James Bond franchise, you ended up auditioning to replace him. Can you tell me a bit about that? No. Don’t ask. It was all a bad dream. The lesson I learnt that day was never be bullied by your agent into going along to something you don’t want to do ever again. That was the last time.

When you get there, you’ve lost all semblance of life. So I’m very comfortable with whatever career that I have because it’s permitted me great privilege with very little loss. But to be a movie star at that level you make a covenant, an agreement with some hellish angel that you cannot get out of. And I wouldn’t wish that on my worst enemy. After the success of Jurassic Park, did you have to take stock career-wise? Actually no, I just muddled along, like I’m muddling along now. But Jurassic Park was always going to be its own thing. It was Steven Spielberg and it was dinosaurs. We had a very good idea when we were making it how it might be received. But it made me realise that sometimes the fabulously popular entertainment can also be the art that endures. It’s like prog rock versus the pop music of the same era. The very serious music dies off, but the pop of the same time? You cannot kill it. Of course not all blockbusters endure, just like not all art films die. But these things are unpredictable.

because it’s permitted me great privilege with very little loss. — Sam Neill

The role didn’t feel like you? Absolutely not. And it’s been really interesting being here at the film festival – my friend Bryan Brown and I can go into Venice and do whatever we want. We can live a life. And without naming names, some of the people who have been at our hotel for the last couple of days, there is no money on earth that could compensate me for the lives they have to live. There are guests on my corridor with six security guards outside their door. Six! And those are the people they now live with.

You have a very fetching tattoo peeping out from the bottom of your shirt sleeve. Can I ask what it is? It’s a Maori design. The tattooist is a friend of mine, Gordon Toi, who I met when I was filming The Piano. [He plays one of the Maori characters, Te Kori.] I was filming with him again not so long ago and I just decided to ask him on the spur of the moment if he would do me something, and he said ‘What do you want?’ And I said, ‘Gordon, you’ve known me for 25 years, you know better than me.’ But the symbol is about mapping my journey. Again, at the risk of sounding like a wanker, my origins are Anglo-Saxon and Irish, but I really am a man of the Pacific now. It’s an identity thing, you might say.

Consummately stylish Introducing the Emporium Hotel South Bank: a new star is set to shine in Brisbane’s cultural South Bank precinct.

WORDS SUSAN LANG-LEMCKERT

BEFORE TONY AND FRANCINE JOHN applied their unique magic to create Brisbane’s original Emporium Hotel in Fortitude Valley, the site was a humble council bus depot. Once the formidable husband-and-wife team behind the Anthony John Group had worked their transformative excellence, the result was a stylish, sophisticated hotel that formed the heart of the Emporium precinct – a vibrant mixed-use development that spearheaded the gentrification of Brisbane’s north-east. Enthusiastically embraced by Queenslanders and visitors alike, the Emporium soon became Australia’s most-awarded boutique hotel.

34

The accolades not only reflect the establishment’s opulence and style, but also its training initiatives, environmental program and numerous ‘bests’, including Best Hotel in Australia in the World Travel Awards for three consecutive years and Best Hotel Bar and, ultimately, Best Luxury Accommodation in the Qantas Australian Tourism Awards. The Hotel was also inducted into the Queensland Tourism Hall of Fame in 2014. But creatives will inevitably seek out new challenges, so the Anthony John Group – of which Tony is founder and Managing Director – will soon be welcoming their newest labour of love – the Emporium Hotel South Bank – as the

Fortitude Valley Emporium is relaunched as the Valley Brisbane by Ovolo Hotels. With formal qualifications and many years’ experience in architecture and design, Tony is renowned for the originality and excellence of his projects, as well as his innate gift for turning creative visions into breathtaking reality. Also well known for anticipating trends before they emerge, Tony’s impressive portfolio of design and development projects is more diverse than most, running from residential properties to retail and commercial premises, culminating with the soon-to-be-opened Emporium Hotel South Bank.

Sited in Brisbane’s cultural hub, Southpoint’s design and position has also earned it the honour of being Queensland’s largest Transit Oriented Development. But modernity and practicality can meld seamlessly with rich cultural ambience – and here they do, with one of Australia’s largest public art installations – SUN VEIL – set to wrap the lower levels of Southpoint’s three towers. >>

The Anthony John Group commissioned internationally-acclaimed environmental artist Ned Khan to create SUN VEIL, which was inspired by the famous Queensland afternoon light that transforms the Brisbane River into a luminous mirror of gold, silver and bronze. “This commission spoke to the ambition of Southpoint and how developers can realise the benefits gained from integrating public art into building design,” says Tony. “We are passionate believers in visually and environmentally sustainable design, ensuring our developments positively enhance the character of their surrounding environment now and for many years to come. “Being positioned in Queensland’s arts and cultural heart, we wanted Southpoint to be not only a vibrant mixed-use development on what is the last piece of land to be developed in South Bank, but a tribute to the location – in itself a work of art,” he says. “This kinetic screen is a powerful cultural contribution to Brisbane that supports our position as Australia’s new world city.”

36

But the jewel in the Southpoint crown is undeniably the Emporium Hotel South Bank, which boasts 143 rooms over 21 levels; sweeping views of South Bank, the river and Brisbane’s CBD; a 23m infinity edge pool; world-class conference facilities; and a tempting selection of food and beverage offerings to suit all moods and occasions. Then there’s the little extras – superior thread count linen and down bedding; Enquisite Sleeps pillow menu; luxury bathroom amenities; state-of-the-ar t enter tainment systems and Emporium robes, to name just a few – that quietly let you know the bar has been set so much higher here. And in a culinary coup, Tony has also confirmed that Brisbane chef Josue (Josh) Lopez, whose accolades include a prestigious Two Hats, a CITI Chef of the Year and an appearance on MasterChef, has joined the Emporium Hotel South Bank family in the capacity of Executive Chef. “We are very excited and humbled that Josh has joined our award-winning team,” says Tony. “This is a partnership based on a mutual commitment to quality and excellence, as well as

a desire to continue enhancing Brisbane’s position as a new world city.” Located only one kilometre from the Brisbane CBD and a short walk away from Queensland Performing Arts Centre, Queensland Art Gallery & Gallery of Modern Art, the Queensland Museum, the Queensland State Library, the Brisbane Eye and South Bank’s myriad of other attractions, the Emporium Hotel South Bank is the ideal – not to mention consummately stylish – place to base yourself, whether you’re travelling for business or pleasure, or simply want to reward yourself with a little luxury. With so many points of opulent and stylistic difference and an award-winning team dedicated to the delivery of excellence in every facet of its operations, it is anticipated the Emporium Hotel South Bank will play a key role in supporting Brisbane’s and Queensland’s focus on creating new pathways for tourism in the future. And if Tony and Francine John’s impressive track record for design, excellence and customer service is anything to go by, that won’t take them very long.

A pop of Pucci Emilio Pucci has unveiled a fashion-forward Prefall 2018 collection.

PLAYING WITH COLOUR, patterns and proportions, the Emilio Pucci Prefall 2018 collection is a joyous redefinition of a real living wardrobe. From the skiing track to the evening party and back, every occasion gets a Pucci touch, with the requisite ease and effortlessness. A layering of elements, shaken, mixed and stirred. Outerwear makes a statement, tailoring cuts a dash, loungewear becomes daywear.

42

Duvets and coats with fur details provide glamorous protection. Chunky cashmere sweaters, overblown scarves. Printed leggings. Pyjama suits. Masculine touches in feminine interpretations: the blazer, cinched at the waist with a smock insert; lace taping on the impeccable suit. Sequins swarm on the oversized shirt with a ruffle bib. The necktie is worn with the long dress.

Short fringes add a frisson to the fluid silhouette. Worlds collide, creating unexpected harmonies: five pockets and truck jackets are cut in duchesse satin. A feisty evening spin: embroidered minidresses, flowing gowns with the ease of a t-shirt. Bougainvillea, pink, orange, emerald green, sky blue, yellow. Primavera prints, Pucci swirls and geometries.

Duchesse, mannish wools, double-faced cashmere, georgette. The fun comes with accessorising: pvc clutches worn at the waist, or carried with playful chains. Pointy booties, sneaker/flats hybrids and stockings add a naughty touch. Oversized sunglasses and tassel earrings for a dash of glam. The spirit is in the mix. The new Emilio Pucci Prefall 2018 collection is now available all Harrolds Australia’s Luxury Department Store locations – Melbourne, Sydney and Gold Coast.

No fear Fear of God’s new collection builds on the brand’s popularity with rappers, athletes and pop stars. IN FOUR SHORT YEARS, menswear label Fear Of God has gone from an emerging brand that specialised in longline tees and side-zip hoodies to a seemingly unstoppable trendsetting force in the fashion industry. The brand's founder and designer, Jerry Lorenzo, has implemented a multi-level market attack that includes his main Fear Of God collection, F.O.G. (a lower-priced line sold exclusively at PacSun stores across America), impossible-to-find vintage rock band tees adorned with the Fear Of God logo, and, last year, all of Justin Bieber's Purpose Tour merchandise. His latest offering, simply named the Fifth Collection, is a luxe mash-up of activewear, streetwear, and classic American staples. “If the last collection was that grungy rock kid in high school who wore band tees and ripped-up jeans, then this one is the hip-hop-loving athlete who wears sweatpants, basketball sneakers, and lots of jerseys and jackets,” says Jerry of Fear of God’s latest offering. “When I was in high school in the ’90s it was the athletes who dictated fashion and what was cool. That was the starting point and it grew from there.” Much of the new collection is the stuff that already defines the Fear Of God look – the nostalgia for the '90s, the oversized grunge and the hoodie-driven cosiness. But what's different this time around is that the main inspiration isn't pulled from the bands that inspired Lorenzo's favoured aesthetic (Pearl Jam, Metallica, and Nirvana) but rather via baseball and Boyz in the Hood. Just as retail stores like Harrolds – Australia’s Luxury Department Store are embracing Lorenzo's signature pieces like bomber jackets and long tees, he's stayed one step ahead by introducing unexpected offerings like corduroy blazers and silk pyjama shirts. There's also old school fitted caps featuring a Detroit Tigers-inspired graphic, made in collaboration with New Era and constructed of wool (just like they were in his dad's MLB playing days). There’s a wide range of new sneakers in the mix as well, which will no doubt appeal to the brand's more hype-motivated customers. Fifth Collection may be the label's largest to date, but Fear Of God's devotees know a surplus of goods has never been the brand's issue – it's managing to scoop up the pieces before they're gone forever. Because of the brand's ever-growing popularity among rappers, athletes and pop stars, the pieces fly off store shelves – even at the high-end prices the brand is known for. Fear of God pieces are stocked in all Harrolds Australia’s Luxury Department Store locations – Melbourne, Sydney and Gold Coast.

Food tourist The Gold Coast is gaining appeal as a world-class dining destination. WORDS & PHOTOGRAPHY MARJ OSBORNE

LOOKING FOR CHAI L AT TES and vegan haunts? Then look no further than the Gold Coast. Gold Coasters are crazy about good food, and it seems we’re not alone. Food is the top factor in the selection of a holiday destination, with 84 per cent of Australians citing dining options as factors in their choice of possible locations. In fact, 59 per cent have ‘flown for food’ within the past five years (Open Table, July 2017). With dining venues opening across the Gold Coast in record numbers, the city is a foodie’s paradise, unrivaled in its constantly evolving offerings. There’s also been a growing maturity in Gold Coast restaurants over the past seven years, with change led by a core of restaurateurs.

62

Their establishments have acted as ‘talent hives’, up-skilling staff to the level where they can start their own eateries, spawning new growth. The ‘can do’ climate in the Gold Coast food scene is also very attractive to investors. Our lifestyle is relaxed, dining hubs are accessible, and there’s a wide diversity of venues. Not only is the entry cost to café ownership lower here than in capital cities, but the Coast’s forecast population and employment growth make investment good value for money. Leading the charge are Gold Coast cafés, fast developing their own unique style showing off our abundant produce. There’s a different vibe on the coast; a freedom to find our own model of eatery unconstrained by the conventions of what a café or restaurant should be; one that reflects our desired lifestyle.

We not only ‘live the life’, we also flaunt it: better work/life balance with less travel time to work, less formality and more casual dress, and closer proximity to venues and facilities. Vibrant and exciting, it’s a young food scene, brimming with activity. We love to celebrate with our friends outdoors in casual beach-styled eateries, catching up with family or friends for brunch, grabbing a quick lunch on the way to the beach, basking in the sun for a Sunday session on the lawn, or meeting up for drinks or dinner with friends or a date. With a healthy and outdoor-centric lifestyle, dining on the Gold Coast appeals to both locals and visitors alike.

Honey hydration Keeping hydrated is paramount to feeling, looking and performing at our best.

ACCORDING TO WATER LOGIC AUSTRALIA, the average Australian only drinks 1.29 litres of water per day – which for men and women alike, barely reaches half the recommended daily intake. This means that most Aussies are living in a constant state of dehydration, often reaching for sugar-filled energy-drinks. But Bee Hydrated is changing the game, hitting shelves with a light, refreshing and tasty alternative. Understanding that hydration is the cornerstone to maintaining optimal daily health and energy levels, Melbourne-based sisters, Joanne and Marina, fused together nature’s dream team of purified and mineralised water with 100 per cent natural cold-extracted Australian honey to create Bee Hydrated Honey Water – Australia’s own healthy hydrating lifestyle beverage. Containing a mere 3 grams of naturally occurring sugar per 100ml, not only does

64

Bee Hydrated blow many fruit juices and even coconut waters out of the sky with its uniquely low sugar content, but it really does taste as good as it looks. Natural honey is loaded with anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties and contains amino acids, including tryptophan to help regulate sleep and wake cycles. It also contains vitamin b6, thiamin, niacin, riboflavin, calcium, copper, iron and magnesium. Plus one tablespoon of natural honey equals just 64 calories and 17 grams of carbohydrates and is fat, cholesterol and sodium free. Infused with high-grade natural extracts and packed full of energy, anti-oxidants and electrolytes, Bee Hydrated Honey Water is packaged in 100% recyclable BPA free bottles. The deliciously healthy range boasts three unique flavours each encompassing their own health benefits.

‘Relieve’ is the powerful combination of pure cold-extracted honey with orange blossom and cinnamon to promote a good source of calcium, iron and magnesium while providing a calming and relaxing effect on the central nervous system. The ‘Replenish’ flavour boasts the super blend of pure cold-extracted honey with lemon myrtle and green tea for a delicious source of antioxidants and other phytonutrients to help replenish the mind, body and soul. Lastly, the ‘Revitalise’ option includes pure cold-extracted honey, ginger and ginseng to aid in revitalising our metabolism while enhancing nourishment and helping to strengthen the protective function of our immune system. The team at Bee Hydrated Honey Water have created a line that not only suits the Australian lifestyle and climate but will keep us hydrated, energised and feeling great all year round.

WINE CELLAR

Wine time Tony Harper gets up close and personal at Oakridge Wines. IT’S MONDAY MORNING, 2.30am and I’m slurping my second coffee, fingering the Uber app in preparation for a flight to Melbourne (bloody daylight saving): destination, the Yarra Valley and Oakridge Wines. The plan is for a mate and me to insinuate ourselves into the winery during the heat of vintage – stomp grapes, clean tanks, do whatever it is they would like us to, in return – I guess – for some insight into how a medium sized, top-notch winery makes its stuff. I’ve done this sort of thing before, and wandering through a winery is a generally a mix of polite yawns and feigned interest. But a winery like Oakridge puts a completely different slant on things. It’s wines are among my favourites in the country and getting an inside view on the mechanics that create them (however brief the visit) is nothing short of epic. To put its production in perspective, Oakridge will make around 32,000 dozen this vintage, which is 288,000 litres. It sounds like a lot, but Casella Wines (Yellowtail) produces more than 12 million dozen annually; Yalumba falls just short of the one million mark. Oakridge is what we’d call medium-sized, and when you get a peek at the winery you begin to understand just how intimate their winemaking process is. So, let’s run through my day – a day in the life of Oakridge during vintage. Melbourne comes too soon; even after the two and a half hour flight, I’m behind on work. I blame the full flight and two rather solid guys in the seats next to me (eating my muffin is tricky enough, let alone opening the laptop). That’s ok, I have the trip to the Yarra to set things right. But the drive is both winding and beautiful: it’s a perfect Victorian day – sunny and warm, but a good escape from the sauna of Brisbane. We make a short stop at Healsville to grab my mate Charlie and ten minutes later arrive at Oakridge. It’s impressive. The winery, cellar door and restaurant (where the Matt Stone and Joe Barrett team weaves its magic) are set back a few hundred metres from the road, and elevated: you can dine in the restaurant (which is something very worth doing) and gaze out over the renowned 864 Block of vines and a nice slice of the Yarra Valley beyond.

68

Cellar door and restaurant are newish – just coming up to five years of age – and quite spectacular: a long, low rectangle fronted entirely by glass with a giant, red rod cantilevered through its length and marking the entrance. The winery sits to the rear, behind a couple of fabulous gardens that supply the restaurant with fruits and vegetables. It’s not that big – 1,880 square metres plus a small admin and lab block to one side. But it’s big enough, and the moment we walk in we are met with the gorgeous, heady smell of fermenting wines: there’s nothing quite like it. Tim Perrin (winemaker under the guidance of Chief Winemaker, Dave Bicknell) and his crew are racking fermenting pinot noir and pumping it back over skins; a job that happens a couple of times throughout the ferment. We get a taste of it later in the day. First job, however, is mucking out a tank. Imagine a cylindrical stainless steel tank, taller than it is wide, that holds 20 thousand litres. And that tank is more than half full of leftover skins after the wine has been drained. My job is to climb in the tank with a fork and a shovel and push them through a small door at the base of the tank. Easy hey? Well, there are a few things that make it more difficult than you’d imagine. For starters my feet don’t reach the floor until late on the process, so I’m floundering around up to my knees – occasionally my thighs – in skins. Then there are the fumes – carbon dioxide, toxic, heady, invisible and keeping me breathless. After a while I develop this technique of bending and shoveling for a half minute before standing straight and – like some kind of weird bird – shoving my nose as high in the air as I can, merely to breathe some oxygen-rich air. Things get even more tricky when I finally hit the floor. It’s raked on something like a 30 degree angle towards the opening: it’s stainless steel, wet, and very, very slippery. Hard yakka perhaps, but oodles of fun. Pump-over looks comparatively easy: the juice gets run off to a holding tank, you hop in and tread the grapes for half an hour or so, then the wine gets pumped back over the top. Once again it’s quite heady, and a serious workout for the legs: I’m knackered. The great joy of treading the ferments is smelling and tasting the various parcels of almostwine.

Even at this juvenile stage I can sense the characters of Oakridge, more apparent in some vats than others, but there in all of them. It’s not all forced labour; there’s a terrific lunch (complete with wine options), a solid tasting of most of the Oakridge range, dinner (with more wines) and a morning trip to the Upper Yarra to see the vineyards – Willowlake and Hazeldene – that are so important to the Oakridge pinot noirs and chardonnays. I’m not a fan of bold statements or absolutes, particularly when it comes to wine (it’s such a moveable feast), but I’ll commit to saying that Oakridge has – for many years now – been one of my favourite Yarra brands, and its 864 chardonnay and pinot noir amongst my top Australian picks. Now, having been there and added my own body-yeast to its ferments, I’m even more convinced. Thanks Oakridge.

Heading South Exploring New Zealand’s picturesque South Island by car is both rewarding and relaxing.

WORDS RHONDA OXNAM

HOW DO YOU reach a happy compromise when one person wants an overseas adventure and the other would prefer a more relaxed break? You head to New Zealand with no real preconceived plan of where you are going or what you will do when you get there. A quick four-hour flight and we have landed in Christchurch … a perfect starting point for our ten-day driving holiday. As we weren’t sure of the condition of the roads we would be on, we chose to hire a fourwheel drive (and even though we didn’t need them it was comforting knowing we had opted to include the snow chains as well). The Virgo in me had insisted we at least prebook the first night’s accommodation so we set

70

off to find the Chateau on the Park, a tranquil, Tudor-style property boasting a moat and a beautiful rose garden. Having seen Christchurch before the earthquake hit, it was heartbreaking to witness the devastation caused by the 2011 disaster. But they are slowly rebuilding and there are certainly parts of the city that are worth a visit. We spent an enjoyable afternoon wandering through the Botanic Gardens and watching people punting on the Avon River. The cool, crisp weather and clear blue skies were a very pleasant change from the heat and humidity at home. From Christchurch we headed across to the western side of the island via Arthur’s Pass.

As with every leg of the trip, the roads were very well maintained and the scenery spectacular. So many times we just had to stop to take in the surrounds … and while I snapped hundreds of photos it is very hard to capture on film. A couple of warnings … all this sightseeing slows down the journey so allow a little extra time to reach your destination. Also, there are no big service stations in New Zealand like we have here so be sure to keep an eye on the petrol tank and fill up whenever you can. Our target for that evening was Franz Josef … a quaint township named after the nearby Franz Josef Glacier and well known for its adventure tourism … think heli-hiking, guided ice walks, kayaking, etc. >>

BEST FOR LUXURY

72

The chalet we had booked online the previous evening was charming if a little daunting given the steepness of the stairs. (Don’t tell anybody but we ended up sleeping in the little attic room with the door locked and the stairwell light on so we didn’t take a tumble in the middle of the night.) The following morning we set out to explore both Franz Josef and nearby Fox Glacier. Not for the fainthearted, the tracks wind through rocky riverbeds and over slippery terrain. While we didn’t quite make it to the top of either, the stunning views from our vantage points were

Next stop was the highly recommended Lake Matheson, just a short drive from Fox Glacier. Accessed via the Clearwater River suspension bridge, the walking track around the lake takes about one and a half hours to complete (be sure to pack a decent set of boots) but is certainly worth the time and effort. The dark brown waters of the lake create a mirror-like surface and the reflection of New Zealand’s highest peaks – Aoraki (Mount Cook) and Mount Tasman – framed by the luscious green trees was simply breathtaking. After spending more time than anticipated

Wrapping around a lake and surrounded by snow-capped mountains, we found a town built for lingering, with great views, great people and great coffee. But this was a road trip … and we had pre-booked accommodation … so after one night it was time to hit the bitumen again. Destination Queenstown. This cosmopolitan city is a tourist Mecca. In our magical few days there we went jetboating on the Shotover River, ate, caught the gondola up the mountain to take in the stunning views, ate, took a side trip to the historic township

still incredible.

there we made our way inland to Wanaka.

Aside from the delicious food and to-die-for ice cream (did someone mention Mrs Ferg Gelateria) the highlight would have to be the day trip we took to Walter Peak High Country Farm on the TSS Earnslaw. Kids and adults alike were fascinated by the workings of the beautiful old steamship which can be observed from a viewing platform in the engine room. Once on shore we fed the animals, watched a sheep shearing and working dog demonstration and enjoyed a delicious high tea in the original farmhouse. A great day out and one that all the family can enjoy. Of course no visit to the South Island would be complete without a trip to Milford Sound so we made our way to Te Anua, which was to be our gateway to the iconic fiord. Again located on the shores of a lake, this charming little village treated us to one of the most spectacular sunsets we have ever witnessed.

74

And although the following day was quite overcast, the cruise around Milford Sound certainly lived up to the hype. With its sheer cliffs, majestic waterfalls (which left those of us game enough to stand on deck completely drenched) and calm, clear depths, I can only image how breathtaking it would be if the sun was shining. We also saw some amazing sights on the drive back including the aptly named the Mirror Lakes (the reflections of the mountains and foliage in the still waters were once again awe-inspiring) and The Chasm, a series of powerful waterfalls where thousands of years of swirling water has sculpted shapes and basins in the rock. However, we missed others because, despite my earlier advice, we simply did not have enough time in our schedule. After a second night at Te Anua we made our way to Lake Tekapu via Mount Cook.

Unfortunately it was still quite cloudy so the peak itself was not visible but the journey there was very pretty and it was another item ticked off the bucket list. As the name suggests, Lake Tekapu is nestled next to a wide expanse of water and was the perfect spot to break our journey. We spent time wandering the croppy foreshore and exploring the little sandstone chapel built on the lake’s edge before heading to the local pub for dinner. The following morning we meandered back to Christchurch, where we had just enough time to enjoy one more night and a delicious meal at the Chateau on the Park before flying home. And given how much we both enjoyed our time in New Zealand, it’s safe to say we will be returning to the land of the long white cloud very, very soon.

Tasting trail Tasmania is the quintessential isle of everything.

WORDS & PHOTOGRAPHY MARJ OSBORNE

ENTICED BY INEXPENSIVE AIRFARES, we planned a holiday where we travel from Hobart to Launceston; a ten-day meandering journey to discover the real gems – dramatic windswept landscapes, 170-year-old lighthouses, charming convict-built towns and niche artisan food and wine producers. Hobart, the home of many great restaurants, was to be our base for the first four days before we head up the East Coast, west to Cradle Mountain then across the northern part of the island. Travelling by hire car, we stop at boutique heritage-listed accommodation we’d self-booked. Here are some of our highlights: MONA If there’s one attraction that has singlehandedly drawn tourists to Tasmania, it’s the the Museum of Old and New Art Gallery (Mona), just north of Hobart. Privately owned by multi-millionaire philanthropist David Walsh, its foundation is the stuff of legends. Humbly born, Walsh invented algorithms to beat gambling systems, investing his winnings in arts and culture, most notably Mona and Moorilla Estate Winery. After a short visit to the Salamanca Markets, we board the ferry from the Brooke St Pier, investing in the Posh Pit where complimentary drinks and canapés prove to be a suitable intro to the viewing to come.

76

The gallery houses a challenging mix of over

2,000 ancient and co ntemporary artefacts based loosely on the themes of religion, politics, sex and death. From Egyptian funerary objects to a waterfall featuring words from the day’s headline news, the gallery is by any standard an incredible collection – confronting, thought-provoking and opinion dividing, reflecting the tastes and eccentricities of its founder. To us, dominating every exhibit is the building itself. Designed by Fender Katsilidis, it’s a labyrinth of towering sandstone walls, meandering metal walkways and vast vaulted spaces. We stay on for lunch at The Source restaurant adjoining the gallery, where Executive Chef Vince Trim produces a menu of shared, produce-driven dishes, in warmer weather served outdoors on vegetation-topped tables.

taste on our Tasmanian tour, honey and fudge before we climb the 1838-built Cape Bruny Lighthouse on the island’s southern tip, the second-oldest lighthouse in Australia, manned for 158 years. Our seafood platter lunch at the Bruny Island Hotel, included in the tour, is an absolute delight.

BRUNY ISLAND TOUR The ‘island off the island’, Bruny Island has recently risen in tourism consciousness due to the growing popularity of provenance-driven dining. We take a day tour with Bruny Island Safaris, guided by Nick, a local who’s a passionate expert on the island’s flora and fauna. Leaving the ferry, we pass by salmon farms just off shore, stopping at Bruny Island Cheese Co’s outlet for a tasting of the magnificent cow’s and goat’s cheeses from their Huon Valley farm,

CONVICT DAYS – PORT ARTHUR AND RICHMOND It’s possible to tour Tasmania purely for its history and heritage buildings. The area around Hobart offers several convict experiences. Two well worth visiting are Port Arthur and Richmond Gaol. It’s easy to spend a day at Port Arthur, especially if you include a boat trip to either Isle of the Dead (the island cemetery) or Point Puer, the boys’ prison. Richmond, a very pretty town of convictconstructed buildings that now house cafés and galleries, is home to both the oldest bridge and the oldest prison cell in Australia. While Port Arthur is vast and atmospheric, Richmond Gaol gives an intimate insight of life as a convict. A sobering and claustrophobic experience, it’s at Richmond Gaol that we view a ‘man trap’, with its horribly efficient jaws.

KATE’S BERRY FARM The rugged East Coast contains many highlights for tourists, including Freycinet National Park, Bicheno Blowhole and penguins, wineries and primary producers. Kate’s Berry Farm is a popular spot, with over 50,000 people visiting the farm annually, Kate tells us. We enjoy a piece of Huckleberry Pie on the café’s veranda, perched high on the hill with magnificent views across the berry patch to Freycinet National Park. Kate’s one of the most passionate primary producers we meet, setting up the farm 14 years ago, much of it with her own labour. She says that the intense taste of the berries comes from slow-ripening fruit grown without the use of pesticides. >>

CRADLE MOUNTAIN Although we’re not hikers, Cradle Mountain National Park still holds joy for us – magnificent views of towering peaks across Dove Lake, tough alpine heath country, home to beautiful wildflowers and wildlife such as echidna, birdlife and wombats. Only 90 minutes by car from the main NorthSouth highway, it’s well worth a detour, let alone a major stop.

Research tells us that Tasmania is Australia’s largest producer of legal opium, accounting for half of the world’s legal opiates, such as morphine and codeine. Instead, we visit Hellyer’s Road Distillery, the largest distillery in Australia, owned by Betta Milk Co. who also produce Mersey Valley Cheese. On the informative tour, our guide Dianne tells us that their whisky is matured for 10 - 12 years in barrels formerly used to make other liquors, such as Kentucky bourbon. We taste whisky direct from the barrel. Distilling 12 - 14 barrels per week, taxed at $26 per bottle, the bond store is worth $16 million in tax. Little wonder that it’s regularly inspected. Sheffield is worthy of a bypass if only to view the town’s murals. Over 60 have been painted on walls throughout the town depicting the area’s history. We stop in at 41 Degrees South for some of the best salmon we’ve tasted, on the way to the port of Stanley, an historic town perched along a cliff-face road leading up to The Nut. There’s a chairlift to the top, apparently, but when we visited it was blowing a gale. Also worth visiting are the weekly Ulverstone Sunday Markets, and The Chapel in Burnie, the café roasting their own coffee beans in a cute micro-roaster. Their food is delicious as well.

CRADLE COAST The area around Devonport in north-western Tasmania is home to a multitude of primary producers. From salmon, honey and berries to hazelnuts and chocolate, they’re well covered by the ‘Cradle to Coast Tasting Trail’. One crop that the Cradle Coast producers’ itinerary doesn’t cover is opium. Fields of waving violet-coloured flowers spark our interest, as do the danger signs.

TAMAR VALLEY WINES Our final area of interest is the Tamar Valley. Pipers River particularly is well known for its sparkling wines (such as Arras, Pipers Brook, Jansz and Clover Hill) and pinot noir (Bay of Fires, Pipers Brook and Tamar Ridge), some of the best wines of their type in Australia. With increased interest in global warming, Tasmania is Australia’s up-and-coming wine region, wine tourism in the state jumping

DEVIL’S CORNER Not far away from Kate’s Berry Farm, Devil’s Corner is another ‘must visit’. A sister venue to Tamar Ridge Winery north of Launceston, it’s a fabulous stop boasting views of Freycinet. Enjoy a feast of rustic sumptuous dishes, such as coconut and chilli mussels, oysters and seafood terrine with a glass of local wine. ROSS Major highways now bypass many of the island’s cute villages, so we make a small detour to Ross, a very pretty town settled in 1812. We walk down its picturesque tree-lined main street, stopping to eat at the Ross Village Bakery, our curried scallop pie baked in their 170-year-old woodfired oven. Their vanilla slice is so legendary that we try that as well.

78

23 per cent to 260,000 cellar door visitors in the past year. History buffs can enjoy stops at Low Head and at Beaconsfield Mine and Heritage Centre. The museum deals with both the history of the area’s gold mining and the Beaconsfield mine collapse in 2006, including commentary about the disaster and a replica of the small metal cage that shielded the two trapped miners from tonnes of fallen rock, serving as their sanctuary and prison for 14 nights. JOSEF CHROMY In this land of convict beginnings, for many, Tasmania has provided a fresh start. Josef Chromy was one of those. Escaping his war-torn homeland of Czechoslovakia, Josef emigrated to Australia in 1950 at the age of 19, working in butchers’ shops before founding his own company, Blue Ribbon Meat Products. Later, he ventured into the wine industry, founding Rochecombe (now Bay of Fires), Jansz, Heemskerk and Tamar Ridge vineyards. In 2007, Joe launched Josef Chromy Wines, one of Tasmania’s most successful labels. Dining on the veranda of Josef Chromy Vineyards close to Launceston Airport, we look out across the elegant vineyards in this graceful estate, raising a glass to its founder. What better tribute could there be to a land of new beginnings? We fly home from Launceston in the knowledge that there’s another ten-day trip waiting of places we missed this time. Maybe next year?

All round luxury The Ferrari GTC4 Lusso T is the ultimate combination of class and comfort. WORDS CHRIS NIXON

THE FIRST QUESTION was always, “Wow, a Ferrari! What’s it like?” The second, “How much does it cost?” Well, unless someone is already familiar with the Ferrari world, what else would they ask? I’ll get to the answers later. Most people know Ferrari by reputation, but few get to see one up close. When a red one appears in my modest suburban driveway, neighbours come from everywhere. One feature of the striking car sparks their curiosity. This Ferrari, the GTC4 Lusso T, is a four-seater with rear bodywork that suggests it might be the world’s fastest station wagon. (Shooting Brake was the term used by old English coachbuilders.) Ferrari, like every other car company, has to build what customers want; never more so than in the current era, when growing sales are attracting buyers with widely different requirements. Individual preferences used to be accommodated by bespoke coachbuilders using Ferrari chassis and mechanicals, before the company became a (relatively speaking) volume manufacturer.

80

Now the traditional sports car lines are joined in-house by models such as the Lusso – and special-bodied examples by artisans such as Pinin Farina, Scaglietti and Vignale are very, very rare. The Lusso (it means luxury) is no less a sporting car, but it’s differently packaged. It’s designed to be more versatile and appeal to owners who want to take an extra two passengers, a bit more luggage or enjoy greater ease of use around town or on a trip. Ferrari Australia provided a Lusso T for test. This version has a twin-turbocharged V8 engine, rear-wheel drive and a list price of $503,888. It you want to spend a few dollars more, the Lusso without the ‘T’ in its name comes with a giant V12, all-wheel drive and a $578,888 ticket. Still got change? Just as well there’s an options list with eye-watering prices. Extras boosted the test car’s price to $673,211. They included: • Special paint $22,001 • Sunroof $32,500 • Ferrari badges on the front fenders $3,100 and Custom luggage and trolleys $17,650. It’s another $6,791 for the Apple CarPlay feature (connecting your iPhone to the on-board

infotainment system) that’s standard in many cheaper cars. And it seems not for any price can you get onetouch electric window closing on the passenger side. A rear-window wiper would be nice too. But it’s the way things are in the supercar world. As is often the case, the version of a car with a smaller engine proves the better drive. This seems the case with the Lusso T, even though I haven’t tried the V12. Less weight over the front wheels makes it more nimble into corners. This is helped by fourwheel steering, which turns in the back wheels a degree or two to bring the tail around and point the nose tighter into the corner. This gives confidence and it’s easy to crack-on in the Lusso T once the new driver has become accustomed to judging distances around the long, wide and low body. The 3.9 litre engine is superb. It produces 449 kiloWatts of power and 760 Newtonmetres of torque – big figures – in manageable fashion. You never feel like the guy in Dr Strangelove riding the nuclear bomb. Despite being a four-seater, the Lusso T’s performance is vivid.

Qualified Dental Specialist or a general dentist? It is for you to decide …

It accelerates from rest to 100 kmh in only 3.5 seconds and is claimed to top 320 kmh. Those figures are only benchmarks; the real point is how the power and torque make this car so driveable in all circumstances. Via an excellent, seven-speed, twin-clutch transmission, power comes on smoothly and progressively. It’s accompanied by the distinctive sound of the V8, a flat, metallic blare that becomes more melodious as revs rise, rather than the bass rumble of American muscle. Anyone could drive the Lusso at normal speeds, or a bit above. The challenge in driving such cars is that when you do get a move-on, surprises can arrive very, very quickly. That’s when the benign handing, mighty carbon-ceramic brakes and prodigious power step into help the driver out. The Lusso rides comfortably, as it should in its all-rounder role. Various selectable drive modes will stiffen the suspension for faster driving but in everyday Comfort or Sports modes it’s not at all harsh or noisy on most roads,

All the winners either are on sale in Australia now or coming soon. • World Car of the Year - Volvo XC60 • World Luxury Car - Audi A8 • World Performance Car - BMW M5 • World Car Design of the Year - Range Rover Velar • World Green Car - Nissan LEAF • World Urban Car - Volkswagen Polo

CRUISER CONCEPT We’ve heard many large luxury cars described as ‘land yachts’, but this must be one of the few times in motoring history a brand has turned to actually making its own boats. Lexus announced at the recent Japan International Boat Show that it would sell a 65-foot flybridge sports cruiser from the second half of next year. Like the cars, the Lexus boat promises luxury accommodation and high levels of performance and technology, especially on-line integration. Connected features using the Lexus mobility services platform will provide security, smartphone integration, remote diagnostics and maintenance and other functions. The project’s catalyst has been the Lexus Sport Yacht Concept (pictured), a sleekly spectacular, open-cockpit sports boat, which won an award at the boat show in Yokohama. The Lexus Sport Yacht concept was conceived by Lexus Design and engineered by Toyota’s marine division, which – perhaps unknown to many – is one of Japan’s biggest boat manufacturers. It was built in the United States by the Marquis-Larson Group, which will continue the collaboration for the new boat. The concept’s hull was made from hand-laid carbon fibre and power supplied by two marinised versions of the Lexus 5.0 V8 car engine. Lexus has not said what will drive the new boat, but it should be fast.

SUPER SUVS The motoring world across more than a century has provided us sedans, wagons, utes, hatchbacks, coupés and convertibles, but it seems that will soon be in the past and we’ll all be driving SUVs. In many examples I find their so-called versatility is questionable or unnecessary and in any case likely to be offset by higher ownership costs. But we like ‘em nonetheless; SUVs have gone beyond trend to become the new paradigm. Proof we’re getting to the end of the list of makers resisting the SUV trend comes with news of the just-released Lamborghini Urus and forthcoming Rolls-Royce Cullinan. With Aston Martin and Ferrari tipped to follow, the end is nigh. The Lambo 4WD, previewed in Cove earlier this year, has now gone on sale in Australia – although deliveries aren’t expected any time soon. List prices start at $390,000 for the fastest SUV in the world. It will blast its luxurious 2.2 tonne bulk from rest to 100 kmh in just 3.6 seconds and on to a top speed of 305 kmh – promising a potentially thrilling experience for owners venturing to, say, Fraser Island or the Simpson Desert. Significant news for Lamborghini fans is that this is the make’s first model with a turbocharged engine, a 4.0 litre V8. Lamborghini is the last supercar maker to embrace the efficiencies of turbocharging, likely made easier in its case by access to the parts bin shared with V8-powered Volkswagen Group siblings Porsche, Audi and Bentley. The Rolls-Royce Cullinan – for sale in 2019 – is expected to be revealed in full late this year. Cullinan is also the name of the world’s largest diamond (3,106 carats) and Rolls-Royce is using the analogy to suggest its off-roader will have peerless levels of ability and comfort. And who would expect anything less? Teaser material says the Roller will come with fold-out leather chairs and a cocktail cabinet, called a ‘Viewing Suite’, mounted on the tailgate. Little other hard information has been released yet, but the Cullinan is expected to use the Rolls-Royce Phantom’s 6.8-litre, twin-turbo V12 engine, which ought to have ‘sufficient’ power for dignified boulder-hopping.

People & property growth Investors make the most of population boom.

WORDS NICK NICHOLS

STRONG INTERSTATE migration is giving the south-east Queensland property market a shot in the arm, and Gold Coast investors appear to be making the most of it. Tight vacancy rates and rising property prices have been amplified by supply constraints to boost rental returns for homes and apartments in some of the Gold Coast’s most sought-after suburbs over the past three years. A comparison of rental growth across the region since April 2015 shows Gold Coast properties performing well ahead of the average in Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast with rents for homes surging more than 26 per cent in coastal suburbs. Gold Coast’s central and southern areas recorded rental increases of 22.8 per cent and 23.2 per cent across all homes since April 2015, according to data from SQM Research. Three-bedroom homes were most in demand

for the first time in May after reaching 4.9 million in September last year. Queensland’s population increased 1.7 per cent in the year to September, adding more than 81,000 people. In percentage terms, it is Australia’s thirdfastest growth state behind Victoria and the ACT and just ahead of NSW which grew at 1.6 per cent. Net interstate migration accounted for 19,000 extra people in Queensland over the year, with a net flow of 12,000 from NSW. “We were the most popular state for internal migration, growing more than any other state in the year to September,” says REIQ chairman Rob Honeycombe. “Our popularity means demand for housing is growing and this is good news for some of our weaker markets such as the inner-Brisbane apartment market and regional Queensland. “Of course, there are pockets where housing

along the Coast’s southern beachside suburbs, delivering gains of 26.2 per cent in average rents. The spike in asking rents on the Gold Coast compares with a subdued 0.7 per cent average growth in rents for homes in inner Brisbane over the past three years. Even the Sunshine Coast saw gains of just 8.9 per cent in average rents over the period. The Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ) says population growth has been a key driver for the state’s property market in recent years. While this is positive for some of Queensland’s hard-hit regional markets, it concedes supply constraints on the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast continue to place pressure on these areas. The Australian Bureau of Statistics expects Queensland’s population to exceed five million

supply is tight and this population growth is placing pressure on markets such as the Sunshine Coast and the Gold Coast, where prices are rising steadily and vacancy rates are at historic lows. These areas would benefit from increased supply.” The REIQ’s positive assessment for south-east Queensland comes amid growing uncertainty over the direction of the national property market in the near term. Investment bank Morgan Stanley remains pessimistic about housing prices because of tightening credit conditions, while the ANZ Bank is confident the slowdown witnessed in Sydney has almost run its course. With the spending boom of the Commonwealth Games now over, a new report at least has given the Gold Coast some cause for joy in the near term.

The Urbis Gold Coast Infrastructure Report, commissioned by Ray White Surfers Paradise Group, has identified non-residential projects worth almost $11 billion either under way or planned for the Gold Coast and northern NSW. This comes on the heels of $2.4 billion in work recently completed. The report also reveals a further $20 billion in residential projects are either proposed or under way on the Gold Coast to meet expected demand. Paul Riga, the Urbis director of property economics and research, says the $11 billion in non-residential investment either under way or planned for the Gold Coast will provide ongoing support for the local property market and compares with about $7 billion spent in the city over the past five years. “Not only did the previous work support the property and construction industry but it also brought diversity of employment options and it really changed the economic structure of the Gold Coast, adding to the level of diversity of the economy,” Mr Riga says. “Population growth does drive the need for this sort of investment, but the infrastructure work in its own right is also a driver of population growth. “As a growing city the Gold Coast needs infrastructure investment to cater for its current population and to be able to cater for expected growth.” Urbis says most of the infrastructure spending by value that is planned or under way on the Gold Coast is for transport infrastructure, including upgrades to the M1, the proposed third stage of the light rail and the upgrade of the Gold Coast Airport.

GOLD COAST ARCHITECT Ben Parker has been creating exceptional buildings for homes and businesses for over 20 years. He is a passionate advocate for the value of contemporary design and nothing pleases him more than seeing his clients’ lives transformed by the buildings he creates.

lessons learnt in the past but with an eye firmly fixed on the future; design that seeks to continually improve and evolve the quality of our life and experience now. “It’s exciting, and that’s what I love about my work as an architect,” says Ben. “There’s a wonderful freedom that comes

templated design that could be built on any site anywhere in Australia. “It’s refreshing to see and certainly a far cry from the conservative social norms of previous generations, including mine.” Ben recalls life back in the 80’s, when he envisioned himself living in the same kind of

Ben’s philosophy is: “If you’re looking to buy a car, you want the latest model with the best that contemporary design has to offer. Why would it be any different with a house?” That’s the beauty of contemporary design. Design without rules; design that embraces

with losing the need to conform, and I think that’s what people are looking for when they choose a contemporary architect. “They want something as unique as they are; something that reflects their family, their environment and their lifestyle. Not another

QUALITY CUSTOM SHUTTERS & BLINDS YEARS

“That was 25 years ago and now I have the pleasure of exploring that magical world with my wonderful clients every day. It’s an exciting journey and incredibly rewarding for everyone involved. “I studied architecture in Brisbane in the early 90’s and sought experience in a number of small, local practices after graduating. It was a deliberate decision to immerse myself in a complete architectural experience – something often missing in big offices. “In 2002, I became a registered architect and travelled overseas, working for a time in a Mancunian firm in Glasgow. It was large institutional work and, while enormously challenging, lacked the kind of intimacy and excitement I felt on smaller projects.” After returning to Brisbane in a partnership role, Ben established his own practice in 2012. While the focus of the office is definitely housing, he still undertakes some boutique commercial and public work, such as the recently completed amenities block at The Spit. In 2017 Ben relocated his home and office to the Gold Coast, a fantastic move and now, every day still feels like a holiday. “The city is constantly maturing and evolving, and I love being a part of that vibrant energy. It’s the kind of energy that also underpins the philosophy and work of my practice.” From the earliest conceptual phase of a project, through detailed documentation and into construction, Ben’s focus is always on delivering an exceptional outcome. “Clients sometimes make the mistake of assuming that better outcomes are driven by bigger budgets, but it’s the quality of thinking applied to the process that really matters. “You can have two homes on neighbouring blocks, with identical budgets and materials. One will leave you with an extraordinary experience and the other won’t. “That’s the impact of great design. It responds to climate and outlook; connectivity between spaces; shape and volume; integration with the landscape and use of materials – and it does this in innovative and delightful ways. “That quality of experience transforms your quality of life, as well as the value of the property. This is what you’re investing in when you engage an architect.” Ben says he’s fortunate to attract clients who understand and value that investment. Without that understanding there’s no trust, and without trust you can never achieve a great result. “Like all good partnerships, it’s the quality of the relationship that counts and this extends to every profession on the project: surveyors, engineers, planners, certifiers and builders. “When you have a great team, the project’s a dream. That’s the way every project should be.”

Polo by the Sea Polo by the Sea returns to the Gold Coast for another social and sporting spectacular. WORDS LEANNE ST GEORGE

THE GRASSY EXPANSE of Doug Jennings Park at Main Beach will soon reverberate with the clatter of hooves and throb of sticks as the 2018 edition of ‘Polo by the Sea’ captivates with its coterie of colourful characters and competitive spirit. Gold Coast Polo by the Sea is part of the Urban Polo circuit, now comprising 10 events nationally: the Land Rover Polo in the City event held in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Adelaide. Polo by the Sea – Gold Coast and Palm Beach, Polo on the Beach in Adelaide and, new in 2018, Polo in the Vines in the beautiful Hunter Valley and a Polo Up Event in Rockhampton. Janek Gazecki is the originator of Urban Polo Events, inspired by the rising popularity of the sport worldwide and a need to make polo more accessible to city dwellers. In 2005, he devised a reduced field format, introduced new rules, a larger ball and thus, the most exciting and successful pro events were created. Spectators are close enough to the action to appreciate the tactics and skills of the athletes Apart from the obvious appeal of uniting a ferociously fought sport with 2,500 years of heritage, with fashion and finery, socialising, delectable cuisine and French champagne, Urban Polo provides a unique networking opportunity. “Events create a perfect opportunity to mingle with like-minded business people and entrepreneurs, whilst at the same time providing a private marquee space for your clients where you can ‘own the space’ from a branding and creative standpoint,” explains Janek. “The spectacle of the polo itself is something corporate guests will not forget,” he continues, his passion for the sport palpable. “It is the world’s fastest, full contact, ball game with adrenaline levels at fever pitch. Your brand is inextricably linked with the fun, premium hospitality and the high calibre of the networking experience. “Urban Polo events are the only Australian polo series specifically designed for corporate entertainment, and one of the few in the world to have taken that approach. “Unlike the races, at Urban Polo you can literally touch the horses and mingle with the players. You are a vital part of the game and can enjoy the thrill of its highs and lows.” >> Model wears Hugo Boss Pacific Fair, Helen Kaminski hat. In addition to two world class polo games, the event will be replete with activities throughout the day that sweep guests up into the action, ranging from the time-honoured tradition of the divot stomp to the increasingly popular Fashion on the Field competition sponsored by Hugo Boss, which offers a number of sensational prizes. The Men’s and Ladies’ Dash, with its jostling and jocular mood, has become an event highlight. Renowned for attracting the best-dressed revelers in the region, the event has become an annual rendezvous for the stylish and the seriously connected. Polo by the Sea is unrivalled as the most elegant event on the social calendar – a magnet for ‘who’s who’. The VIP Marquee at past events has hosted dignitaries, celebrities, and even Royalty. This year’s VIP Marquee will for the first time be hosted by renowned master jeweler, Mark Cotterell, attracting a new wave of patrons and polo fans, while also raising funds for the Gold Coast Community Fund which is the charity partner of the event. Adding a new and compelling aspect to the 2018 ‘Polo by the Sea’ is its selection as host event for Gold Coast Tourism’s ‘This is Gold Coast’ initiative, a showcase for 120 conference

decision makers considering the Gold Coast for a future event. Gold Coast Tourism Executive Director Corporate Affairs and Strategy Dean Gould said Polo by the Sea was an opportunity to bring together trade and event prospects considering the Gold Coast for conference and corporate events. “This partnership will help us profile the Gold Coast to some very influential business decision makers and what better way to show off the destination than through an event like Polo by the Sea.” With the backdrop of the glorious Broadwater and azure sea beyond, with the Surfers’ skyline visible from afar, Polo by the Sea highlights all the natural attributes of the Gold Coast and the verve and enthusiasm of its people. Equal parts egalitarian and exclusive, guests are attracted to the sporting spectacle, athletic prowess of horse and rider, the fabulous fashion, buoyant boats, and simply soaking up the sublimely social aspect of meeting new people, savouring award-winning cuisine by Fresh Catering and spending time with friends, clients or family totally immersed in the brilliant, multifaceted festivities.

EVENT DETAILS When: 2 June 2018 Where: Doug Jennings Park, Main Beach What: The day’s proceedings begin at 11am and conclude at 5.30pm, then a shuttle service will operate from the event grounds to the Official After Party. In 2018, guests can enjoy the event from the luxurious confines of the ‘Mark Cotterell Master Jeweller VIP Marquee’, where all-inclusive $330 tickets provide select guests with a selection of premium food and beverages. The Polo Club offers a mid-way point in between the invitation-only VIP Marquee or the more casual ‘Polo Lounge’, where $85 is your passport to enjoying the polo within a ‘beer garden’ setting – all guests having the opportunity to mingle with star polo players and revel in the panoply of the occasion. CANCER 22 Jun – 23 Jul

SCORPIO 24 Oct – 22 Nov

PISCES 20 Feb – 20 Mar

LEO 24 Jul – 23 Aug

SAGITTARIUS 23 Nov – 22 Dec

There’s no time like the present to boost relationship dynamics! Take the opportunity to boost your communication skills; you have the magic of Mercury in your favour for most of the following two months. July’s eclipses suggest a change in environment such as a trip could be ideal for you; opening doors to new options and also helping to boost precious relationships.

ARIES 21 Mar – 20 Apr

You’ll experience key developments over the next two months, so ensure you pace yourself. You’ll appreciate the opportunity to get your work and daily life in a secure and stable pattern you’re happy with. The lunar eclipse on July 28th could turn your love life around in surprising ways. Singles: ensure you look out for someone special if you’d like to commit.

VIRGO 24 Aug – 23 Sept

CAPRICORN 23 Dec – 20 Jan

TAURUS 21 Apr – 21 May

LIBRA 24 Sept – 23 Oct

AQUARIUS 21 Jan – 19 Feb

GEMINI 22 May – 21 Jun

Plan for growth over the next few months. The Capricorn full moon on June 28th will be an excellent time to consider a fresh job option or a healthy new routine. The Cancerian partial solar eclipse on July 13th indicates a fresh look, project or venture may appeal. Focus on improving interpersonal dynamics. Be ready to let go of the old and welcome the new.

You may experience ripples of change through your life in unexpected ways. Ensure you pace yourself, especially at work and with your daily or health schedule. Make space for 'time out’ and focus on boosting relationships, as the two eclipses in July will promote bigger-picture change. The more serene you are in your outlook, the smoother the changes will be.

The partial solar eclipse on July 13th will fall in your friendship zone, suggesting considerable change in your social circle, not only introducing new people in your circle, but also potentially changing dynamics between yourself and those you love. Singles may meet a fine friend. The next two months could also be ideal for networking and improving relationships at work.

The next two months will place the focus on your personal life and also on where you might find more happiness at work. Choose your activities wisely, as the lunar eclipse on July 28th will also kick-start a fresh financial cycle. You may experience the following three months as a retrospective phase; you may enjoy this interlude as an opportunity to review your circumstances.

You should benefit from a stable phase in your relationships, especially if you dedicate time and space to providing yourself with a little more peace in your life. Someone special may require more of your attention. You’ll relish finding the time not only for the activities you love, but also for the people you love over the next two months, so plan special events.

Mars will encourage you to make changes; and the eclipses in July across your work and health zones suggest it’s a great time to focus on making your daily life more upbeat and more to your liking. Take the initiative. July will see considerable developments in your partnerships, business and personal, and socialising and networking could bring new work options your way.

You will appreciate the opportunity to get your feet on the ground in new-found circumstances. Be practical and draw on your inner resources if you find life remains changeable for the next two months. Friends and organisations should prove helpful and supportive. New circumstances at home or at work may include the chance to travel or embrace a new environment.

Be inspired; someone with a larger-than-life personality may influence you in positive ways. But you may also be easily led, so ensure you are not being influenced in ways that diminish your own sense of motivation. You’re likely to feel ready to embrace new territory, but you must also consider the practicalities, especially in connection with travel and domestic matters.

A fresh financial opportunity may be enticing, but you must ensure you have all the details at your fingertips, and that you are ready to move forward with exciting plans. A fresh circumstance could be ideal, especially where this concerns family, creativity, your activities and interests. Shared projects, partnerships and new agreements could provide more stability.

This is an ideal time to take considerable steps forward in your life in areas that really do fire up your imagination, creativity, spirituality and contentment in life. Travel, art, music, inspiration and even legal agreements could broaden your horizons. Add this to July’s eclipses, and you could open new doors to projects that will be fulfilling in unexpected ways.
