Our offices overlook the stunning marina, there is plenty of free parking and we are within walking distance to some of the best coffee going around.

Editor’s letter ONE OF THE GREAT things about this magazine is that although our distribution base is far and wide – from luxury Brisbane and Gold Coast hotels to airport lounges and newsagents across Australia – it is produced right here in The Marine Village at Sanctuary Cove. Our offices overlook the stunning marina, there is plenty of free parking and we are within walking distance to some of the best coffee going around. So … in this edition, we thought we would share this slice of paradise with our readers, starting with the handy 44-page ‘mini mag’ which showcases many of the retailers, boutiques and services that also call The Village home. Looking to wine and dine? Check out the cafés, coffee shops and restaurants that are nestled throughout the precinct. After a special outfit, gift or even a luxury boat? Take a stroll down Quay St or along the Promenade to see what’s new. Want to take care of business? You can buy your groceries, arrange a holiday and insure that aforementioned boat all within walking distance of the car park.

We are giving someone the chance to experience all of this for themselves with the Ultimate Stay and Play at Sanctuary Cove competition so be sure to get your entries in. Further afield, we head to L.A. to interview award-winning actor/director Jodie Foster, check out Topper’s Mountain winery in the New England region, and preview the Oberammegau ‘Passionsspiele’, an amazing performance which takes place in the picturesque German village (there’s that word again) once every ten years. We also chat with talented musical duo, Jess + Matt, who grace our cover. Their new album, Songs from the Village (are you sensing a theme here?) features a selection of folk classics including a special rendition of The Sound of Silence which they recorded with the legendary Chris Izaak.

Acting evolution

Filmmaker Jodie Foster continues her evolution from actor to director and back again.

NOT AVAILABLE ONLINE For subscriptions please call WORDS IZUMI HASEGAWA / THE9499 INTERVIEW PEOPLE +61 5577 AWARD-WINNING actor/director Jodie Foster is in front of the camera again for the science fiction film Hotel Artemis. In this in-depth interview, she talks about the genre, the feminist movement, being a mum, and the balance of directing and acting.

White gold multi-function necklace set with detachable drop and matching earrings.

What’s it like being back in front of the camera? It’s good. I’ve done it practically my whole life, really since I was three. I’ve done it more than I’ve done anything else. It doesn’t feel foreign or anything to go back. I think it’s just such a luxury. It’s such an honour after 52 years in the film business to be able to say I act because I love it and that’s it. I don’t have to check off any more boxes.

Handmade 18ct yellow gold natural tanzanite and diamond pendant.

This is quite an unglamorous role. Were you concerned at all about it? Oh my gosh. No, that’s what I wanted. That was the whole plan. I picked it because I felt like it was a physical transformation, which I was really looking forward to just coming back and being not as people have usually seen me. I had to fight for that a little bit. There was definitely some resistance. I think it was jarring when they first saw it. They were like, ‘Whoa, wait a minute’. But it was right. It’s right. It’s interesting to me how the rawness of what she’s going through and her life and all of that, you really get that from that face in that body and the physicality of the character. >>

The last role that you did in front of the camera was Elysium. It has a similar class warfare theme, is that a coincidence or is that something that resonates with you? Yeah, it probably does. Income inequality is going to be a part of science fiction because that’s what we’re facing in the future. And climate change, problems with healthcare, no water in the sea, police brutality. These are all themes in Hotel Artemis because we’re looking at the next 25 years at what’s going to happen. That’s what science fiction is. It’s prescient to about where we’re headed. A lot of movies seem to talk about how the future doesn’t look very promising. Why do they have such grim expectations for humanity? Well we see it as grim. It may just be an evolution of where we’re headed. I mean, you look at The Matrix, right? And that was a really prescient movie. People are like, oh my God, right, this is where we’re going to be? People are going to be sleeping in their bodies, but they’re actually going to be these big fit guys who were doing things vicariously. That’s just crazy. But that is where we are now. I look at my kids on a Sunday morning and that’s where they are and it’s okay. It’s just the evolution of our species, it’s the evolution of where we’re headed. And technology has been a really, really fascinating point of departure of evolution for our culture. It took thousands of years for every other evolution but the digital technology has changed everything overnight, whether it’s the stock market, whether it’s the influence of media on our politics, whether it’s viruses, or algorithms and how algorithms speak to each other. I mean, it’s the best thing for science fiction ever.

What will it take to get more female directors? They’re doing interesting things in Europe now with quotas but you hear the workload and you think that’s crazy. The problem is systemic. So, when they say, there aren’t enough women directors that we can turn to to direct a $150 million movie, that’s because you didn’t hire a woman director to direct a $500 thousand movie. Or if they did, when that movie was successful, that person didn’t get a second movie that brought them to $4 million. You know what I’m saying? The problem is the system. So that’s why the quota system seems to be working quite well. How did this film come about for you after five years away from in front of the cameras? My agent found the script and it was a friend of mine, somebody that I knew very well, who was producing it. So, I was like, ‘I hear you have this script that you haven’t released yet’. That’s how it happened. So it wasn’t a deliberate absence? Well, I directed two movies and a whole bunch of television over the past five years. I’ve been busy. I’ve said that in my fifties directing would take priority and I needed to really commit to that. But if I found something to act in that works, that would be great.

NOT AVAILABLE ONLINE For subscriptions please call +61 5577 9499

It took a long time to get to the feminist movement. Do you think there are advancements and how do you feel about the whole thing? I don’t know. We’ve all been women for a really long time and had the experience of living in our bodies for a really long time. When I was a kid making films, there were no other women there ever. There was a makeup artist and occasionally maybe a script supervisor, but I grew up in a wonderful world of filmmaking with a bunch of guys. That was my film school and that was my family. Things changed a little by little in terms of technicians, but it didn’t change for directors in terms of Hollywood and all that kind of stuff.

28

Could you talk a little bit about the diversity in this cast? It feels like real life, right? It feels like real life in an urban place, whether you’re living in New York or Los Angeles. It was written that way and the casting process was really fun. I was the first person brought aboard and then I got to see how that all went down. So, Dave Bautista (who played Everest) came second and that was something that Drew (Drew Pearce, writer and director) really wanted to fight for, that vision of Los Angeles in the future. And, I have this experience because I’ve flipped movies. For example, where I’ve had a script that was written for a man and then we turn it to a woman or sometimes vice versa. And it is interesting how the experience completely changes the character, right? It’s a whole different set of references the second you flip the gender. And I think that happens with race as well. We know that not all of black experience is slave movies, right? We need to have black experience shown in everything … doctors, players, airplane flight attendants, etcetera. And when you see the world through that lens, everything becomes richer. >>

Drew is another first-time director you’ve worked with ... Yeah. I’ve done a lot of first time director movies and some big directors. Alan Parker, I did his first film. Adrian Lyne. You are there to serve the director and it’s always an interesting experience because there’s so many things they don’t know, but the one thing that they do have is instinct. I think Drew might be the best-prepared firsttime director I’ve ever worked with. He really had such a vision and he knew absolutely from day one exactly what he wanted in everything. Whether it was music or colour or production. He was all over the castings, he was all over the music. Music is really his thing. So he didn’t feel like a first time guy at all.

There’s something very special about that relationship with a single mum raising a boy. There’s something almost romantic about it because you raised him from the time that he needs help and can’t cross the street without you, then suddenly you have a six-foot tall guy but he’s that same person, and that’s a bond that you just cannot describe to somebody. Are you a strict mum? Oh sure. But now my boys are … my oldest one is 20. He’s just back from his freshman year of college and my little one is sixteen and a half. There’s not much I can do about it.

Because the new platforms like Netflix and Hulu seem a little bit easier? For old people? I don’t know about that. It doesn’t matter for me, it’s about performance. It’s not about whether I’m going to be on a billboard on Sunset Boulevard or selling little toys. That’s not why I wanted to become an actor. That may be one end of the industry, all of that, but I don’t need to participate in that part of the business in order to feel I’m acting. So yeah, I’m really looking forward to acting in my later years. I think because there’s a kind of richness of experience that comes with that face in that body.

NOT AVAILABLE ONLINE How satisfied are you with your career as an actress? Why did you switch so deliberately to do directing? I didn’t really switch, I rebalanced, right? I directed my first movie when I was 26 and then I had another five years to my next movie, Home for the Holidays, and another like 12 years, 15 years until I did The Beaver. That’s a long time in between directing. I started young and I’ve only directed four movies. The balance was ten per cent directing and 90 per cent acting and I wanted to switch that balance. I knew that I wanted to do that when I hit a certain age and I can see the balance changing again when I’m older. I really want to be acting in my eighties. I think that’s going to be really exciting.

What’s it like making a movie in LA? It’s nice but it’s also hard. It’s much harder to make a movie in your hometown, right? Because you have your family, you have your friends. It doesn’t feel like you’re in the trenches somewhere in the middle of nowhere making a film and your whole focus is on that. It’s very hard to focus when you’re here in Los Angeles. So, I just shut everything off. Everybody goes away. I don’t talk to anyone. I don’t go to dinner. That’s the only way to get through it.

For subscriptions please call +61 5577 9499

Your character has a son in the movie and in real life you have two boys. Can you talk about being a working mum and raising boys? It’s just a great experience. I loved having boys, I’ve loved watching them. It’s fascinating to me because it’s different … and I have such a close relationship with them. It has been great for me, in a way, to come to really understand men through them. Like, how did that happen? Why are they like that? Oh, I see. It’s a beautiful bond. Obviously, I’ve played the mother of lots of girls as well. But yeah, the boy thing is special. The first movie I directed, Little Man Tate, is about a mother and a son as well.

ICONIC BRANDS

The ultimate timepiece Established in 1848, Omega has a time-honoured reputation for excellence and innovation.

WORDS SUSAN LANG-LEMCKERT

WHEN THEY NAMED their revolutionary timepiece ‘Omega’ after the last letter of the Greek alphabet, Louis-Paul and Cesar Brandt were creating not only a brand, but history. While working in the La Generale Watch Co. founded by their father, Louis Brandt, the Brandt brothers developed an in-house manufacturing and production system that made component watch parts interchangeable – an astounding innovation at the time; hence the name Omega. The Omega sub-brand proved so successful that La Generale moved to found the Omega Watch Co. in 1903 – but tragedy struck the family that same year when both Brandt brothers passed away. So the baton was passed again. It was Paul-Emile Brandt – who had not yet turned 24 when he and three others began running Omega – who would shape and grow the brand over the next 50 years. The brand’s reputation for accuracy and excellence saw it adopted as the official timekeeper of both Britain’s Royal Flying Corps and the American Army during the First World War. Continued innovation, development and a series of astute mergers with other manufacturers led to Omega becoming Switzerland’s number one watch producer within a few decades. A keen eye on the market pre-empted the growing importance of female clients, and the company stylishly filled that niche, with more than 35 per cent of advanced movements produced during the company’s first 40 years being for ladies’ watches. There have been many firsts throughout Omega’s history – the interchangeable parts; numerous first placings in Observatory Trials; a specifically-designed nurses’ watch; the Marine Chronometer wristwatch and, of course, being the first watch on the moon. Even the introduction of quartz watch movements in the 1970s, though revolutionary, could not sink the Omega juggernaut.

32

The company’s unique combination of reliability and style ensured a permanent place throughout the world in numerous capacities – military, space and oceanographic exploration, Olympic and professional sport, popular culture and fashion, to name but a few. Omega’s long association with the Olympic Games is complemented by a more recent one as Official Patron and Official Timekeeper with the PGA of America. And further afield, the brand’s support of golf is front and centre through sponsorship of Switzerland’s Omega European Masters tournament, the Omega Dubai Desert Classic and the Omega Dubai Ladies Classic.

Corporate Social Responsibility is high on the Omega agenda, too, through its partnership with the GoodPlanet Foundation. This has given rise to conservation projects in Indonesia and Botswana to maintain natural heritage while preserving local economic activities. Now well into its second century of operation, Omega remains at the forefront of innovation, just

Progress on this is impressive, and has already seen the design and successful round-the-world flight by an aeroplane using only solar power. Did you know? • Omega is one of only two watchmakers to have competed in Observatory Trials every year (Patek Phillipe being the other). • Apollo 11 commander Neil Armstrong left his Omega Speedmaster inside the lunar model when setting foot on the moon, as the craft’s electronic timer had malfunctioned; hence Buzz Aldrin’s Omega earned the honour of being the first watch on the moon. • P rince William’s ever-present Omega Seamaster Pro was given to him by his mother, the late Princess of Wales. • E lvis Presley maintained his rock’n’roll pizazz while in the army by wearing an Omega Constellation. • Former President Nixon once declined a gift of the first-ever all-gold Speedmaster Professional Deluxe, deeming it ‘too valuable’. • When social customs considered it rude for ladies to look at their watches when in company, Omega developed ‘secret jewellery watches’ to allow discreet time-checking.

White, bright & beautiful A diamond is a celebration, a representation and symbol of life’s special moments.

EVERY MOMENT that is celebrated with the gift of a diamond, no matter what that moment is, deserves nothing less than the best. LeGassick is a family owned business with over 26 years industry experience. Over that time they have developed a reputation for sourcing the best diamonds from around the world. They understand that every diamond can represent treasured and meaningful moments in life and have developed strict selection criteria to ensure that every LeGassick diamond is unique in both beauty and quality. Recently, LeGassick Director, Darryn LeGassick, travelled overseas to hand select diamonds directly from a diamond factory where he was presented with hundreds of loose stones. He personally viewed every one to ensure only the best were chosen.

40

Any diamond not meeting LeGassick’s stringent criteria was disregarded. This has become an integral foundation of the LeGassick promise to ensure the quality of their gems. So what does it take for a diamond to become a LeGassick Diamond? There are four main facets of diamond grading – colour, carat, clarity and cut. Firstly, the colour and clarity grades were assessed. LeGassick select their white diamonds from only the highest colour grades. “We look for diamonds free from visible inclusions,” explains Darryn. “When viewing a diamond under magnification, we ensure that the stones’ natural inclusions do not inhibit the brilliance or quality of the diamond.”

From here, each diamond was examined more closely, looking at the cut and beauty of the stone. “The cut of a diamond refers to the symmetry, proportion and polish of a stone,” says Darryn. “These three factors affect the light performance from within the diamond and how luminous the stone will be. “Quite simply, how well the diamond has been cut will affect how much brilliance, scintillation and sparkle you will see.” Research has shown that when the exact mathematical angles are used, and a diamond is cut to the right proportions, maximum light reflection is achieved. The idea is for light to enter in through the top of the diamond, be reflected off the internal facets of the stone, then exit through the top of the diamond in exactly the right place.

PLASTIC

RECONSTRUCTIVE SURGERY

Surgical / Non surgical Treatments It takes state-of-the-art technology, master craftsmanship and many hours for a diamond to be cut to the correct mathematical proportions. Once a stone is hand selected, the diamonds’ colour, clarity and cut grades are recorded on a certificate to give assurance of the diamonds’ quality. The fourth component to be considered is the carat weight of the stone. Diamonds and other gemstones are weighed in metric carats: one carat is equal to 0.2 grams, about the same weight as a paperclip. The hand selection process of a LeGassick diamond will guarantee you a beautiful diamond; and the accompanying certificate will give you piece of mind and assurance of the quality. A LeGassick Diamond is a whiter, brighter, more beautiful diamond.

The future of beauty From ‘natural’ and ‘organic’ to cosmetic injectables, the beauty landscape is changing … and so is the beauty consumer. FOR OVER 20 YEARS iconic Australian skincare brand Alpha-H have been bridging the gap between the cosmetic counter and invasive procedures with ground-breaking cosmeceutical products. While Gold Coast-based owners Michelle and Dean Doherty have been busy perfecting their award-winning formulations, the beauty industry has experienced some fundamental shifts. In the past, brands have had sole control over what defines beauty, however perceptions are changing as consumers are becoming more educated and aware of their personal needs. No longer being dictated to by large multinationals, consumers have become the dictators, beauty is now on their terms. Staying relevant has contributed to the success of Alpha-H. Michelle explains how her brand has evolved to meet the needs of the modern consumer. How are consumers changing the face of beauty? The endless information available on the Internet and via beauty apps allows consumers to become their own beauty expert. It seems that beauty is now in the eye of the smartphone holder. Consumers believe they know their skin best and are savvy with what they put on it and what brands they choose. It’s no longer about products; consumers align themselves with the core values of their preferred brands therefore the lines are becoming increasingly blurred between the brand and the consumer. The consumer is the brand. The digital world now has a great impact on our daily life, but how does it impact our modern concept of beauty? Social media influencers are helping to redefine the concept of beauty and individuality. ‘Real people’ are becoming beauty icons, a stage once set for A-list celebrities. Bloggers are proving to be a source of credibility amongst their

42

peers and brands are responding to the demand for personalised beauty defined on their terms. With this shift in the perception of beauty, brands are focusing on consumer behavior rather than boxing people into a demographic. Why does one size NOT fit all when it comes to skincare? Each day we dress according to the weather and what we are doing, but what does our day in skincare look like? As with the weather, our skin’s needs are constantly changing; in response to our lifestyle, stress levels, sleep patterns, hormonal fluctuations, diet and environment. Taking all these factors into consideration, a bespoke approach to skincare is needed to address all the intricacies of a person’s skin. This is what inspired our Vitamin Profiling concept – a multidisciplinary self-select system which allows every individual – whatever their age, skin type or lifestyle – the opportunity to take greater control of their skincare routine by selecting one of the four vitamins to meet the precise needs of their skin at any given time, day or night. We are essentially empowering our customers to write their own prescription for optimal skin health. How is Alpha-H catering to the demand for customised beauty? At Alpha-H we are not led by a trend or a fad, but rather the need to provide a solution to the changing face of beauty and skin concerns. Being independent means that we can keep our individuality, and be responsive to the changing needs of our customers. We were the first to offer a pick ‘n’ mix Sampler Kit – which allows our customers to create their own customised skincare collection. It’s one of the most popular products on our website to date. We are now offering virtual consultations with our therapists so that customers can engage face-to-face for a more personalised experience.

This allows our therapists to build a relationship with the client and provide more accurate recommendations which can be difficult over the phone. How do you ensure you understand the changing needs of your customers? We have open dialogue with our customers via social media and in person through customer events, our skin clinic and our brand reps. The communication channels are always open and we take all feedback on board. Why do you think consumers resonate with Alpha-H? We speak their language. Customers love our transparent no BS approach which enables us to level with them. Our cult following are the core of the brand. It’s not about us, it’s about them – it’s their journey, we are just there to help them along the way. Our products are relevant. It’s not just about DNA, it’s about understanding everything that impacts skin health. We develop genius formulations which challenge the status quo and go beyond trends and fads. Our products change the behavior of the skin with high percentages of next generation clinically validated active ingredients. What does the future of beauty look like and what does it hold for Alpha-H? The ever-evolving perception of beauty will see the removal of labels that are based on simple characteristics like age and gender. Brands will embrace individuality and customise their offerings – assuring the consumer that beauty choices are theirs to be made, and theirs alone. At Alpha-H, we will elevate every opportunity for personalisation and customisation, while staying true to our original identity and brand ethos of being relevant, forward-thinking and results-driven.

Call the doctor After-hours doctors offer peace of mind for locals and tourists alike.

SOUTH EAST QUEENSLAND is one of the most popular holiday destinations for many local, interstate and international visitors, but what happens when you are away from home and are suddenly taken ill or have an accident? In many cases these incidents occur outside of regular clinic hours making it difficult to seek medical help. After-hours in-home medical service House Call Doctor is at the ready to answer calls for anyone – from holiday makers to local residents – who need a doctor when their regular GP is closed or they are away from home. It means those who fall ill at night or over the weekend have the option of being treated in their own home, hotel room, resort or camp site with the doctor visit 100 per cent bulk-billed. House Call Doctor has made more than 600,000 home visits since it started in April 2015, and now has doctors available in every city across regional Queensland, from Toowoomba to the Tweed.

44

Chief Operating Officer Craig Glover said House Call Doctor was Queensland’s largest after-hours healthcare provider. “We pride ourselves on the fact that most often our doctors are able to reach their patients in their homes, hotels, aged care facilities and nursing homes within 20 to 30 minutes,” Craig said. “We treat people for a range of illnesses and symptoms: everything from headaches through to tonsillitis, stomach pain, nausea, minor injuries and of course, the flu. “In some cases, we have had doctors diagnose conditions that have resulted in lives being saved. I recall two cases very clearly: the first, when one of our doctors diagnosed a child with appendicitis and another, when our doctor identified that a patient was experiencing blood clots. “For common conditions, our doctors are able to provide enough medication to ease symptoms until the patient can get to a chemist.” The House Call Doctor service puts an end to the dilemma families previously faced: whether they should attend hospital for treatment or wait out their illness until a clinic opened.

That also means hospital emergency departments are kept free from patients seeking treatment for non-life-threatening conditions. “We all know how crowded emergency departments can be,” Craig said. “Now, when a medical situation arises out of hours, families don’t have to pack up and head to the hospital, and don’t have to face the hours-long wait of emergency rooms. “It means hospital emergency staff are able to help those who really need life-saving treatment straight away.” The service is about assisting the community when other clinics are closed. For those with a regular General Practitioner, House Call Doctor provides medical notes from the in-home visit to the patient’s usual clinic, updating the GP on their condition and treatment. House Call Doctor bulk-bills all patients who have a Medicare or Department of Veterans’ Affairs card.

A culinary coup This September, 2-Michelin-starred Chef Valentino Marcattilii will host a series of incredible culinary events at Bacchus Brisbane.

Chef Massimo Speroni

THIS SEPTEMBER a dining experience unlike any other will be hosted in Brisbane over four very special and flavour-filled days. Internationally acclaimed 2-Michelin-starred Chef Valentino Marcattilii from the famed Ristorante San Domenico in Imola, northern Italy, will take up residence at Bacchus Brisbane. He has cooked for Pavarotti, Liza Minelli, Naomi Campbell and Jean Todt among others, and now, he will cook for Brisbane. An extraordinary culinary coup, Chef Marcattilii’s residency is the realisation of a career-long dream for Bacchus Head Chef Massimo Speroni – to cook alongside his mentor once again. And it represents the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Australian diners to experience the master Italian flavour-maker at work. Bacchus Restaurant has always been committed to celebrating flavours so it is no surprise that Chef Massimo Speroni chose it as his Australian home. Already famed for his talent, Massimo joined Bacchus direct from Ristorante San Domenico just over 18 months ago, bringing with him an extraordinary cache of experience, having worked under owner-chef Valentino Marcattilii as Sous Chef, and in his formative years as a Chef de Partie and Junior Sous. Entering Bacchus is a special moment – the rich chestnut interior throws hues of deep mahogany, tobacco and marble, creating a welcome that is only heightened by Restaurant Manager Kevin Puglisevich, who is seamless in his command of the space.

A specialist in degustations, Bacchus offers a range of the multi-plate dining experiences, from seasonal showcases to homages of beef, truffles, seafood and even dessert. The a la carte menu features standout cuts and crops from the local region, and flavours from around the world. Chef Speroni’s home is never far from his cooking – he recently added a wonderful dish from his childhood in regional Italy – the Anolini. A classic ravioli made in-house, filled with David Blackmore’s braised beef shin and Parmigiano, and served in a simple, authentic Italian beef broth, the Anolini at Bacchus however is finished with 24carat gold leaf olive oil. Bacchus is at home in Rydges South Bank, the premier lifestyle and cultural hotel in Brisbane and one truly embedded in the cultural, dining, sporting and corporate life of the city. Chef Valentino Marcattilii and Ristorante San Domenico He is a legend in the food world, a true culinary icon in a world often mad with insta-worthy moments and fleeting flavours. And in September this year, Chef Valentino Marcattilii will command the Bacchus brigade, creating a dedicated Degustation menu featuring his most beloved dishes.

His is a life dedicated to food and family. Born in Mosciamo Sant’Angelo in 1954, he moved to Imola in 1960. At 16, he started work at Ristorante San Domenico, as the assistant to one of the great Italian chefs, Nino Bergese. He stood beside Bergese in the kitchen until his death seven years later when he undertook a series of apprenticeships in some of the most renowned restaurants in France. When he returned he assumed the direction and co-ownership of the Ristorante San Domenico kitchens. In 1973 Ristorante San Domenico gained its first mention in the Michelin guide, in 1975 it earnt its first Michelin Star and in 1977 (41 years ago), its second. The standards have never wavered. Chef Marcattilii created a united kitchen with great respect for tradition, the freshest products of the region, and rigorous yet simple preparation of dishes. This mantra remains today. He was the first in Italy to introduce the idea of ‘home cooking’ in restaurants, which until that time had only been entertained within the walls of aristocratic homes. In June 1988 the Ristorante San Domenico opened in New York at 240 Central Park South, with Valentino as Executive Chef. In July Brian Miller, critic of the New York Times, gave the restaurant 3 stars: an award that he had never before given to an Italian restaurant. The same year Esquire magazine defined Ristorante San Domenico ‘the Best of the Year’ in the USA.

Spending an evening at Ristorante San Domenico has been likened to being in an haute cuisine temple. A standout dish at Ristorante San Domenico (and touted as one of the dishes to ‘try before you die’ in media around the world) is the Uovoin-Raviolo – a singular ravioli with an egg inside. (Chef Speroni has already added his take on the dish to the Bacchus menu, allowing diners the opportunity to sample a taste of what Valentino Marcattilii will bring come September 2018.) Today, the kitchen is run by Valentino’s grandson, Chef Massimiliano Mascia, however, his grandfather is still found in the kitchen, unless of course, he is travelling the world sharing his love of food; and his next stop – Brisbane, Australia.

What’s for breakfast? Gold Coast cafés are driving breakfast trends.

MOVE OVER CEREAL AND TOAST. Breakfast is changing. From cultural experience through to new takes on classics, many menus push boundaries. And, as breakfast is the new ‘meet-up’ meal, cafés across the coast are stepping up to the challenge to grab their share of the market. “Breakfast is a very competitive market,” says Peter Dufty, owner and chef of Caffe Republic in Bundall. “Chefs need to be aware of all the trends and supply a range of options to all diners.” Eggs Benedict and smashed avo still have firm followers, but with diners chasing a range of food from fast, healthy ‘wholefood’ meals to indulgent splurges, there’s more choice than ever before for earlybird diners. Here are some trends driving the market: ALL DAY BREAKFAST We love breakfast so much that ‘all day’ breakfast menus have become the norm rather than the exception. The ‘All-Day-Brekkie’ menu encompasses the whole gamut of breakfast dishes from housemade granola to burgers, açai bowls filled with fruit to mushroom toasties. With our busy lifestyles, why shouldn’t we be able to have breakfast at any time during the day? Thankfully, most of our top cafés agree. CLASSICS HOMEMADE The ‘everything old is new again’ slogan comes to life in breakfast menus. Move over handmade waffles, because house-made crumpets are even

104

more delicious. Hash is now made with sweet potato, and porridge with macadamia, bowls of goodness served with sour cherry labneh, maple nut crunch and fresh figs topped with an edible flower.

of quinoa topped with charred broccolini, brussels sprouts, hummus, and avocado laced with seeds and nuts, we’re intent on stacking up our ‘goodness count’ in the first meal of the day.

WORLD INSPIRATION We don’t always have to travel to learn about world food. Mexican tortillas and American-style pancakes have long been brekkie favourites, but now world cuisine has landed on our doorstep, a rising star to start our day. We’ve always been partial to baked eggs or shakshuka, but now they’re joined by international dishes such as nasi goreng and hawker rolls. Specialty cafés bring us the best of their national cuisine, such as the French bacon and egg tartine or oeuf cocotte (eggs baked on sliced mushrooms, spinach and cauliflower velvet), Japanese-inspired omu rice, and Taiwanese ‘hungry mouth’ bao burgers. It’s a wave of increasing strength with endless sources of inspiration from the world palate. Protein is king, but vegies are queen. While we’re not veering away from eggs and bacon or smoked salmon anytime soon, we’re tweaking the dishes for an edge of difference. It’s not unusual to find eggs that are 63-degree cooked, bacon that is free range and salmon that’s been hot-smoked. However, it’s vegetables and fruit that are dominating our most handsome breakfasts. Whether it be a mixed variety of mushrooms on toast, a Buddha bowl or a brekkie salad plate

BOWL FOOD Talking bowls, breakfast bowls are no longer filled with cereal. They have become ‘superbowls’ with new grains, augmented by superfoods and world trending foods. From traditional poke bowls to chicken karaage and mushroom-based bowls giving nourishment to vegetarians, nobody misses out. DESSERT FOR BREAKFAST Since breakfast panna cotta made its way to the Gold Coast a couple of years ago, landing in the middle of a plate of house-made granola and freshly cut seasonal fruit, we’ve been pimping pancakes and banana bread ever since. Bïrcher muesli moved over for porridge, açai bowls moved over momentarily for pataya bowls then for coyo bowls before it bounced back. Almost every trending breakfast menu contains a sweet option pumped up with seasonal fruit, nuts, berries, caramel, chocolate and ice cream. HEALTH CONSCIOUS With an outdoor lifestyle, the Gold Coast is health and body focused. As a result health-conscious menu items are increasingly trendy and popular.

Qualified Dental Specialist or a general dentist? It is for you to decide …

First Fruits - Buckwheat pancakes

Consumers want to eat a ‘breakfast of champions’ with ‘superfoods’ dominating many menus. Cocowhip or coyo, goji berries, açai, chia, quinoa and amaranth are now common terms, with familiar dishes such as pancakes made in new ways or with new ingredients. Fermented foods and activated grains and nuts are also edging into menus. ALL THE FOODS Paleo, gluten-free, vegan … flexibility drives customer and café loyalty. Cooked fresh to order, the menu must carry the ability to be tailored to the diner’s requirements. No longer do vegetarians need to seek out a special place to eat. Our best cafés are ‘omnivore’, their menus catering for all tastes, dietary preferences and intolerances and appetite sizes. Vegan is now mainstream, with the food so astoundingly beautiful that anyone could eat there. SOCIAL MEDIA The godfather behind any strong menu is social media. Instagram and Facebook, each with slightly different roles, are vital means of communication between cafés and diners. It doesn’t matter how good a new menu item tastes, if people don’t know about it, they won’t buy it. Social media is driving restaurant traffic and menus, chefs are seeking inspiration from it, and diners are choosing where to eat next from their ‘Insta’ feeds. It’s a key driver in keeping menus fresh and interesting, and bringing diners and food together. The winning combination in social media? Photographs of dishes that reflect a mixture of decadence and nutrition. We want to ‘have our cake and eat it too’.

WINE CELLAR

Mountain magic Despite it’s relative youth, Topper’s Mountain Vineyard is setting the standard for grape and wine production.

WORDS TONY HARPER

IN THE BACK BLOCKS of New England – west of Glen Innes by 60-odd kilometres, then up through the Tingha State Forest into a clearing dominated by paddocks – lies Topper’s Mountain; a relatively unknown vineyard that is fast becoming the stuff of whispered legend. Over the past 12 years the wines made from Topper’s Mountain fruit have amassed a staggering number of awards in both regional and national wine shows – more than 50 trophies (including 14 Champion Wine of Show), over 70 gold medals, 11 ‘Best Alternative Variety’ including a trophy in the National Wine Show in Canberra. That’s an amazing haul; an extraordinary one considering its isolation and the fact that it isn’t part of one of the darling regions … Yarra, Barossa, McLaren Vale, Margaret River and the rest. Gewürztraminer leads a rather motley pack of varieties from the vineyard. I’ll go out on a (rather sturdy and very safe) limb and state that the gewürztraminer from Topper’s Mountain is consistently the best gewruz’ in Australia: it manages to balance perfume and power, year in and year out, and despite the rather old-maidish image of the variety, it’s the Topper’s Gewurztraminer that has done best in the national wine show circuit. Mike Hayes, Winemaker at Symphony Hill, has made many of the award winners. As well as heading Symphony Hill’s winery, he contract makes for plenty of other producers (including Topper’s Mountain), and takes a portion of the Topper’s fruit for Symphony Hill each vintage. What makes the vineyard so special? (I warn you, Mike takes information seriously … don’t expect frivolous answers.) “The vineyard soil is derived from ancient volcanic remnants with red volcanic soils called Krasnozems that are very free draining and allows grapes to develop a deep root system for their water intake,” he explains.

108

“Combined with high elevation (900-plus metres) the soils are relatively free draining with a high iron content to allow depth of flavour and enhanced colour development in most years. “Cool nights and warm days throughout autumn deliver ideal conditions for ripening. The vineyard is situated on the western slopes and therefore summer rain has a less of an impact compared to the Granite Belt.” That last line speaks volumes; if there’s an Achilles heel to the Queensland vineyards it is our summer rainfall and the disease pressure it brings. Having the range to break the rainfall is a boon, and gives this New England vineyard greater consistency than its neighbours to the north. Mark Kirkby is the face behind the vineyard, with his brothers and partners hovering in the background. He is laid back, quietly humourous, intelligent. The Kirkby family had been based near Moree in northern New South Wales for more than a century and, in the early 1990s, the brothers began looking for alternatives to the cotton-growing life they had been living. With partners Peter and Jenny Birch, they purchased the Topper’s Mountain property in 1998, enamored with its red, basalt-rich topsoil. Back then there was no vineyard; just a few struggling olive trees and paddocks for grazing. These days most of the 650 hectare property is still grazing country with a mere ten hectares (25 acres) planted to vines. But those ten hectares produce some of the most interesting, exotic wines in the country. A portion of the Topper’s Mountain fruit gets set aside for its own label; the rest gets sold off to other producers. Guys like Jarad Dixon from Jilly Wine Co, with his whimsical, pencil-sketch labels, buy the grapes each year and turn them into unique expressions; often quirkier, more soulful (the advantages of

approaching winemaking from a less do or die commercial perspective). Asked why the Topper’s fruit is cherished, Jarad talks of the vineyards’ unique soils, the mix of varieties and the extraordinary savoury minerality that characterised the early Topper’s wines. Particularly, he reckons, the nebbiolo. Tasting Jilly’s nebbiolo, it’s easy to understand Jarad’s attraction to the variety – it’s perfumed and bright and accessible – a very different expression than the more structured, brooding Barolo-esque version made at Symphony Hill. This year Jared has made a whacky field blend from Topper’s fruit – gewürztraminer, tempranillo, nebbiolo, pinotage, tannat, petit manseng, shiraz chardonnay, viognier, tinta cao, touriga and viognier: all bundled into one … how about that. For a vineyard that hasn’t quite reached its 20th birthday, the Topper’s Mountain site has worked wonders. When it comes to vineyards the magic seems to begin once the vines have sunk their roots properly, and learned the annual cycles of their surrounds; at 25, 30, 50 years onwards they tend to improve. Plus the Kirkby’s have been fiddling with the varietal mix, weeding out less suitable vines and adding things that should perform better as they learn the weaknesses and potential of the site. All of which is happening at the same time as Australia is waking up to the merits of Mediterranean varieties and the limitations of the traditional French. In a mere decade (an instant when it comes to winegrowing) Topper’s Mountain has created waves and gained a reputation. I can’t wait to see what the next decade brings.

A new passion Staged once every ten years, the next Oberammergau ‘Passionsspiele’ or Passion Play will take place in 2020.

Oberammergau Passion Play 2020

History of the Passion Play The famous Oberammergau ‘Passionsspiele’ or Passion Play, has been performed every ten years since 1633, a time when the Thirty Year’s War and Bubonic Plague were ravaging Europe. The town pledged that if God would spare them from further suffering and death, they would perform a play each decade in tribute to the Passion of Christ. The locals were true to their promise and the very first play was performed during Pentecost in 1634, with a stage erected in the local cemetery, above the graves of those who had died. Since then, the ‘Passionsspiele’ has taken place every decade. The performance traditionally starts with the entry into Jerusalem, covering the Last Supper, the capture, the sentence and the crucifixion and finally, the resurrection of Jesus Christ. To constantly revitalise the spectacle, a new artistic director is appointed every ten years. For 2020 it will be Christian Stückl. “These kinds of pledges occurred all over Bavaria in hundreds of different places; during the era of Baroque, there were 400 Passion Plays in Bavaria,” Christian explains. “Our Play has remained, but here in Oberammergau, as early as in the 17th and 18th century every generation had a new text, a new theatre building, new stage designs ... only with the rise of tourism in the early 20th century did people suddenly begin being weary of change.

110

“And when I took over the Passion Play it was very important for me to take the tradition with me into the world of today, to keep questioning it. It’s the only way to keep it alive.” A Moving Experience Nowadays the Oberammergau performance is on a much larger scale. With a backdrop of Kofel Peak and surrounded by the Ammergau Mountains, the massive open-air stage erupts with colour, music and song. In all, 100 choristers, a 55-piece orchestra and up to 2,000 local inhabitants re-enact the story of the Passion of Christ. A right to play was introduced in 1910 which ensures that only people who have been born in Oberammergau, or who have resided in the town for the past 20 years, were able to perform. Currently approximately 3,000 of the town’s 5,000 residents hold the right to play. Such is the dedication of the residents, all male actors take part in a ‘Hair Decree’. From Ash Wednesday in 2019, all men (apart from those playing Romans who will have shaved heads) are requested to let the hair on their heads and face grow to ensure they have an authentic look in time for 2020. Where is Oberammergau located? Oberammergau is located in Bavaria approximately 100kms south of Munich and is nestled in a valley deep in the Ammergau Alps.

The village is known for its beautiful painted houses and woodcarving shops. Just up the road are several ‘fairytale’ castles and palaces including King Ludwig’s Neuschwanstein Castle and Linderhof Palace. The whole region is delightful, and the fact that the spectacular Passion Play is staged right in the heart of all this adds enormous charm to the whole experience. Touring with Albatross Operating successfully throughout Europe for well over 20 years, Albatross Tours offers a unique and leisurely style of touring with a more personal experience, travelling with a small group of like-minded guests – group sizes range from 10 to just 28 people. Most importantly, in addition to a host of memorable inclusions, you will also enjoy ‘My Time’ to relax, explore at your own pace and immerse yourself in each destination. In 2020, Albatross Tours will be offering over 78 Oberammergau Passion Play departures from May to October, all with guaranteed best in-house seats, premium seating CATEGORY 1, for performances. This will be the third Oberammergau Passion Play series Albatross Tours have operated. For more information and bookings contact Cove Travel: covetravel.com.au

Journeys of discovery Experience a world of luxury travel with Constellation Journeys.

CONSTELLATION JOURNEYS is one of Australia’s newest and most exciting travel companies but the people behind its inception are no newcomers. Founder Dan Kotzmann has spent more than 30 years in the realm of hospitality and tourism, including nearly two decades planning and operating tours to all corners of the globe. Dan and his team have an in depth knowledge of the cities, hotels, restaurants and transport that feature in each of the places you visit. Constellation Journeys’ first tour was the private charter of a Qantas 747 for an ‘Around the World’ discovery in April 2018. Combining a kaleidoscope of destinations such as Hanoi, India, The Serengeti, Marrakech, New York, Havana and Tahiti, this journey sold out many months before departure. Having perfected the art of luxury travel, Dan takes pride in planning every detail of Constellation Journeys’ tour programs – from connecting you with the best tour guides to counting the threads on each sheet (almost). This hands-on approach means he welcomes direct contact with prospective guests.

112

Constellation Journeys has two amazing itineraries coming up in 2019. The first is a 22-day Eastern Europe experience from Moscow to Berlin aboard a privately chartered train. With daytime travel and two or three nights in each destination you’ll enjoy the convenience of direct services to the heart of each city while relaxing in first class compartments and enjoying the old world charm of meals in the dining car as the stunning scenery passes by. The dining car also offers a relaxing atmosphere in between meals for a game of cards, a drink from the bar or a get together with newfound friends. Railways were such an important part of travel in Europe for centuries – thus many of the stations are located right in the heart of the cities. This means no long airport transfers – in fact in some instances the railway station is so close to the hotel, guests can walk there rather than taking a coach. Some of the highlights on the itinerary include a private Chopin concert in Warsaw, a visit to Vienna’s magnificent Schonbrunn Palace and a

dinner 135m underground in the World Heritage Listed salt mines of Wieliczka. From the refinement of Europe to the excitement of Africa. The second journey on offer by Constellation will see guests travel from Cape Town to Addis Ababa by privately charted aircraft and the world famous Blue Train. This truly exclusive itinerary combines great comfort with the speed, ease and convenience of direct flights to each of the destinations. Experience the awesome beauty and power of the Zambezi River as it thunders down Victoria Falls; visit Serengeti National Park – East Africa’s world-famous wildlife sanctuary and home to the continent’s most diverse and largest concentration of plains’ animals, including the Big Five; and explore Ethiopia’s sprawling capital in the highlands bordering the Great Rift Valley. With 5 star hotels and outstanding game lodges all included, this is the only way to see Africa. If you have questions about any tour feel free to call and speak with Dan directly.

AT THE WHEEL

Alfa better Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio – ‘Australia’s Best Driver’s Car’.

WORDS CHRIS NIXON

ALFA ROMEO has had a magnificent history of building fast and stylish cars for more than 100 years. Mr E. Ferrari was a mechanic and race driver for Alfa before he started his own company. But things went awry around the 1970s and the Milanese cars became bywords for poor quality and sometimes even boring design. But Alfa now shows every sign of being back to what its loyal fans have yearned for – and what should attract a new generation of followers. The renaissance started with the mid-engined 4C sports car and has blossomed with the Giulia sedan and recently-launched Stelvio SUV. The Giulia is a huge step forward, not only stunning-looking but also a great drive, especially in the high-performance Quadrifoglio variant reviewed here.

114

It’s won more than 100 awards around the world, including most recently ‘Australia’s Best Driver’s Car’. That’s enormously significant when rivals include the BMW M3 and Mercedes-AMG C63 S. From out of the blue, it has trumped two of the world’s long-time performance class leaders at their own game. The Giulia is the largest sedan built by Alfa in 30 years. With a twin-turbo, 2.9 litre V6 boasting 375 kiloWatts of power and 600 Newtonmetres of torque, it’s probably the most powerful roadgoing Alfa yet. At $143,900 list, it’s certainly the most expensive in Alfa’s history sold here. Fat tyres sit on 19 inch forged wheels, behind which are Brembo high-performance brakes.

The suspension is wishbone-independent all around, there’s an adjustable front splitter to improve aerodynamic front grip and the bonnet and roof are made of lightweight carbonfibre material. Combine all these ingredients and you have a car that hits 100 kmh from rest in 3.9 seconds and an extraordinary 307 kmh top speed, according to the makers. Are you getting the message the Quadrifoglio is like no Alfa you’ve known? Past Alfas are remembered for their delicate handling, sweet four-cylinder engines and petite design. This car is brutal. It’s awesomely fast, especially when the turbochargers are pumping the engine’s lungs at full capacity, and at speed the sound can only be described as a combination of bellow and snarl.

You’ll go searching for tunnels or tight mountain roads, just to provoke this angry, noisy beast of an engine. The ‘Australia’s Best Driver’s Car’ judges were spot-on about the Giulia’s dynamic ability. Perfect 50:50 weight distribution, quick steering, oldfashioned rear-wheel drive, active suspension damping and 285/30-19 rear tyres mean it swoops through bends like a slot car. The interior is good, though doesn’t reach the epic qualities of the rest of this car. While lesser Giulias provide a three-position rear bench the Quadrifoglio has two individual seats. Upholstery is a mix of leather and alcantara. There’s a beautiful, fat alcantara steering wheel with a large red start button, colour screen for navigation and other functions and a terrific Harmon Kardon audio system. Much has been made since the Quadrifoglio’s launch early last year of the V6 engine’s similarity to the V8 unit in the Ferrari Portofino sports car. Alfa’s sister company denies any link, but I imagine if Ferrari ever made a sedan this would be a perfect model.

AT THE WHEEL

A smooth ride Chris Nixon takes the stunning McLaren 570GT for a leisurely spin.

ON A CLEAR, straight road the McLaren 570GT I’ve come to drive will top 320 kilometres an hour. I’m itching to get even a sniff of that potential, but bizarrely, I’ll spend an afternoon barely able to find 80. What’s the point of this review, then? I find out when I meet my fellow drivers at the pre-start briefing: not a motoring journo among them and my partner for the afternoon wears high heels. The point, apparently, is that McLaren wants to show this assemblage of lifestyle writers they don’t have to be a Dan Ricciardo to handle its supercars. That’s not the way it used to be. A Ferrari, Aston Martin, Lamborghini or Maserati went better if a dashing hero took command. Steering, brakes, clutches and gearshifts tended to need manly effort to move (although female drivers were far from unknown).

116

By contrast, all the supercars I’ve driven in recent years – except perhaps the outrageous Lamborghini – have been made surprisingly easy to handle at our usual driving speeds. That’s the reality of owning one these days; you’ll need a race track, at least some skill and a cooperative insurer to legally explore the performance limits. And it won’t happen today. Our test route from Sydney’s Woolloomooloo to La Perouse includes a clogged airport expressway and the return leg along eastern suburbs beaches throws up roundabouts seemingly every kilometre. If most modern supercars are easy – or easier – to handle, that’s certainly true of the Sports Series McLaren 540C, 570GT and 570S Spider we’re driving today. The English manufacturer applies extreme, simple logic to its designs. It’s easy to imagine them setting the key touch-points

– the comfortable interior dimensions, ideal driving posture, practical boot space, eas of entry and exit via unusual dihedral doors, outward visibility and control ergonomics before cladding the cars in their low aluminium bodywork and hooking up the bespoke, twin-turbo V8 engine and mechanicals. I’ll admit driving a McLaren is no chore, once you overcome the fear of damaging something with a starting price of $350,000. The steering is exquisitely responsive and perfectly weighted. The seven-speed, doubleclutch auto-manual transmission is the best of its type I’ve used, with smooth take-up and gear changes at any speed. The engine is instantly responsive, despite being turbocharged. Finally, there’s the quality. All cars at this price should be finished well, but the McLaren is near-perfect. You really could live with this car – and I think that’s what they were trying to tell us.

FAMILY CAR THE heroic racing deeds of Sir Jack Brabham, who lived his final years on the Gold Coast, have inspired his son David to build a new sports car bearing the family name. The Brabham BT62 will be for track use only and will cost more than $1 million. Just 70 units, marking 70 years since Sir Jack began his racing career, will be built at a factory in Adelaide from late this year. If you want one, you’re probably too late already.

EFFORTLESS EVERYWHERE HERE it is in the metal at last, the Rolls-Royce Cullinan. Possibly the most anticipated model in the legendary make’s history, the ultra-luxurious SUV is expected to land in Australia in the first half of 2019. It will have a 6.75 litre, twin-turbocharged V12 engine, a (governed) 250 kmh top speed and all-road ability. The car’s marketing slogan is ‘effortless everywhere’ – and that’s not difficult to believe.

ITALIAN LUXURY Luxury has truly arrived on the Gold Coast with a state-of-the-art Ferrari Dealership opening in Southport in late September 2018. Can’t wait? Head down to the Ferrari Gold Coast pop up dealership at 7H Masthead Way, Sanctuary Cove and experience the GTC4 Lusso and the 812 Superfast. Order your new Ferrari including the recently launched Portofino or simply drop in for a Chinotto or a San Pellegrino and experience a little Italian Luxury today.

Regional property boom Confidence rises amid uncertainty.

WORDS NICK NICHOLS

CAPITAL CITY house prices are down and bank finance has become tougher, but confidence within the property industry has never been higher. An ANZ-Property Council survey of industry professionals shows sentiment rose across all states over the June quarter. This is despite a raft of negative news over the direction of home prices, particularly in Sydney and Melbourne. The overall rise in confidence to a six-year high has been attributed to the strength of industrial and hotel developments, as well as the retirement sector. Sentiment for residential construction fell 4.9 points over the year to June, while retail construction took an even bigger hit, falling 12 points. The weakness in housing is reflected in the latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics showing home construction fell 5 per cent nationally in April from March. This was led by an 11.5 per cent slump in permits for apartments over the year. South Australia, Queensland and the ACT experienced the biggest surge in confidence, according to the ANZ-Property Council survey of 1000 property professionals. While Queensland still has the lowest sentiment in the country, Chris Mountford, Queensland’s executive director of the Property Council, remains upbeat due to the ongoing momentum of migration to the state’s south east.

118

“Cross River Rail is expected to create 1500 jobs annually, which will provide a significant boost to the Queensland economy,” Mr Mountford says. “The opportunities created by additional jobs facilitate interstate migration. “Queensland has been expecting increased migration for years due to our lower property prices and fantastic amenities – now we have the job growth to support it.” There’s still no shortage of negative news in the market, including Westpac’s forecast that property prices will continue to fall over the next two years, led by Sydney and Melbourne. ANZ has also chimed in with forecasts that the downturn in the southern capitals could last years rather than months or quarters. There’s equally no shortage of evidence that regional centres continue to benefit from the property boom, with one study revealing the big winners are the cities just outside of Australia’s state capitals. CoreLogic data shows these cities were the top local choice for residents moving out of the capitals in search of value properties and a lifestyle change. Sydneysiders prefer Newcastle and Wollongong, while Melbournians head to Gippsland and Geelong. Brisbanites flock to the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast. While there is no data yet on how the Gold Coast market has fared following the Commonwealth Games, REIQ Gold Coast chair

John Newlands says price falls in the southern capitals will benefit the local market. “I think there’s been a lot more optimism from interstate markets such as Sydney and Melbourne where prices have fallen away,” Mr Newlands says. “The Gold Coast is still recognised as good value. Our vacancy rates are low and return on investment is still strong.” He says the migration trend is most evident in the changing profile of interstate apartment buyers. “More of them are choosing to become owner occupiers of apartments rather than investors,” he says. “The biggest challenge now though is that financiers are getting tougher. This will impact on the market and we’re starting to see that already.” Investors who put their faith in the property clock when buying or selling will note some variations between Brisbane, Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast, according to Herron Todd White (HTW). The HTW property clock sees the Gold Coast’s market for houses as approaching its peak with some further price gains possible. However, the apartment market is at its peak. The house market on the Sunshine Coast is also approaching its peak, while Brisbane’s house market is still considered to be rising. Inner-city oversupply issues have placed Brisbane’s apartment market in decline, while the Sunshine Coast remains a rising market for apartments.

COVE LIVING

City living Unique design and ground-breaking layout sets Brisbane’s 443 Queen St apart.

REDEFINING SUBTROPICAL CITY LIVING, 443 Queen Street is Brisbane’s next world-class residential tower. Cbus Property, the developers behind the project, have joined forces with two prestigious international architectural practices – Singapore based WOHA and Brisbane-based Architectus – to create the landmark building. Together they are bringing a 47-storey residential tower, comprising of 264 apartments to an unrivalled Brisbane location. At the pinnacle of the tower are The Monarchs – ten new-style architectural and design masterpieces catering to buyers seeking exceptional and luxurious real estate. The Monarchs boast three or four large bedrooms, generous 3 metre high ceilings, a prime double-corner location and unprecedented perimeter glazing making each floor plan unique.

124

Monarchs’ residents can expect an openplan style of living seamlessly connected to a luxurious kitchen fitted with Gaggenau appliances, hardwood floors and natural honed stone. Generously sized bathrooms with ample storage and a unique screened drying balcony are just a few more of the exceptional features. In addition to The Monarchs, 443 Queen Street will boast two stunning luxury penthouses. The design of the entire building is ground breaking, moving away from a traditional ‘sealed square plan’ to one that is ‘open’, allowing most apartments to occupy a corner position. By opening up the design in this way, the facade of each apartment is double that of a typical residential tower of this size. It also provides exceptional and luxurious benefits for each apartment, including more natural light and views of the Brisbane River.

Typically, the size of each apartment is 40-50 per cent bigger than other residential developments in Brisbane’s CBD to appeal to a broad target market including families, couples and downsizers seeking central city convenience, but with the privacy and size once only found from a luxury home. “443 Queen Street is guaranteed to offer Brisbane residents an experience like no other,” says Adrian Pozzo, Chief Executive Officer for Cbus Property. “Until now, apartment buildings in Queensland have not been designed in this way – to take advantage of the subtropical environment, which is what makes this building and its design so unique.” The locational quality of 443 Queen Street is another design principle that makes it stand apart from other residential buildings.

Home of harmony Introducing the latest ‘starchitects’ at Natuzzi Italia.

Jamie Durie’s Amber Collection

Jamie Durie

WHETHER YOU’RE ATTENDING an event at NYCxDesign, or shopping for furniture in Brisbane, the message and aesthetic driven by Natuzzi Italia globally, is consistently that of innovation … of bringing harmony to the home in all aspects, while always staying one step ahead of the field. Total home harmony across living, dining and bedroom environments and everything in between. This encompasses advanced versatility, technology, comfort Motion furniture systems, the soon-to-be introduced smart-living LG partnership program – embracing the Internet Of Things (IOT), the state-of-the-art Your Design By Natuzzi studio with 3D configurator for design consultations in-store, and the endless combinations of coverings, functions, materials and colours available to create ultimate interiors. In keeping with this highly progressive style, Chief Marketing and Communications Officer, Pasquale Junior Natuzzi, explains the company’s immersive approach, using flamboyant Dutch Designer Marcel Wanders’ new Agronomist collection for the brand as a point of reference, “We want to really evolve our creative direction, to work with creative minds that are not only designers with pens and pencils, but storytellers, poets, who can give a lifestyle interpretation of concepts,” Pasquale says. “The Agronomist is inspired by Puglia, our motherland, and the furniture has a strong reference to the land.” This connection, along with design and manufacture in Italy, and an unwavering commitment to comfort and quality, is a promise that’s been honoured by Natuzzi since 1959.

126

To bring beauty and harmony to homes around the world. To respect nature and the environment, while staying ahead of the field in areas of research, design and manufacture. To keep re-inventing, with collaborations from leading designers, artists, movers ‘n shakers around the world – including the first Australian creative partnership with Jamie Durie. Jamie began his design business two decades ago, expanding to outdoor furniture collections four years later. His designs have always been an environmentally conscious process, consisting of beautiful FSC certified timber, and only sourcing timber from managed forests, where it’s not impacting rainforest situations. Two years ago, Jamie embarked on a journey with Natuzzi Italia, to bring the outdoors in, in the same way that the brand’s been doing for many years. “It wasn’t hard to see why our brands connected quite well, having gone over there and seen the raw natural beauty of Puglia,” he says. “We are very, very closely aligned with environmental organisations and we make sure that the furniture is high quality but it’s accessible to a wider range of people. So, this for us was a dream come true – to collaborate with Italy’s most famous furniture brand in a sophisticated, yet accessible collection.” As an ethical company, with social responsibility and environmental sustainability at the core of its values, Natuzzi maintains the highest international certifications for quality (ISO 9001) and commitment to environmental

protection (ISO 14001) – an ethos Jamie lives by and is a fierce advocate of, so clearly this was a major determining factor in the partnership. His long-awaited Amber collection, now on display at the stunning Newstead store on Commercial Road, includes a dining table, sideboard, bedside tables and a chest of drawers. When anyone purchases one of these products, they’re acquiring a part of nature, a deeply contemplated design piece that grows more beautiful with time. “For me, this was about working with natural timbers,” Jamie explains. “The Amber table is composed of American Walnut, one of my favourite timbers. “The edge is one of the most touched portions of the table allowing a direct human connection with nature. It wraps around a toned-down tinted glass, giving it a reflective quality. This is our way of bouncing images of nature off the table and back into the room.” The shape of the table’s timber base is also symbolic. “If you look at it in Plan view in sections, it’s actually the sign of Peace – and Natuzzi Italia is all about harmony making. Harmony between nature and the environment, the connection with nature and peace in your home. “These little nuances, build what we call conversation corners, which makes the table a successful one – and we were lucky enough to have it displayed in the front entrance of the flagship Natuzzi Italia store in Via Durini, Milan, which was amazing.”

QUALITY CUSTOM SHUTTERS & BLINDS YEARS

The table, along with other furnishings in the Amber collection, is being sold in Natuzzi Italia stores around the world. “The Amber sideboard is getting most of the press and interest, especially when we start to show imagery of where the inspiration came from; the Simpson Desert here in Australia. “I was raised in a little town called Tom Price on powdered milk and red dirt. We had a pet Dingo. So for me, this was a way of bringing the true Australia into a very sophisticated environment, and bringing the outside in. “All the panels were created with a large, sideways gliding tool, called a five axes CNC machine. The large disc spins through the wood, running across it, and the angles formed emulate the hills you’d see naturally formed by the wind in the Simpson Desert in central Australia. “This furniture has to last for years and be passed down between generations. So what we did was change the circumference of this timber over a period of a year and a half and we kept grading it up, so that this became something that would never crack and always hold the Natuzzi Italia brand – and of course, our brand, in high stead. They did an incredible job engineering it and putting it all together. “I’ve been out to the factories in Italy, met Pasquale Natuzzi himself – he’s an inspirational, iconic figure. He’s got a real presence and it was a real honour to work with him and the team. “All the furniture in the collection has some form of ‘harmony,’ which is the backbone of Natuzzi Italia’s brand promise.”

COVER STORY

Village folk Musical duo Jess + Matt take a nostalgic journey on their new album, Songs from the Village.

INTERVIEW RHONDA OXNAM

130

FOLLOWING UP ON their The X Factor Australia success, mesmerising duo Jess + Matt, (Jess Dunbar and Matt Price) have released their stunning new album, Songs from the Village. Featuring an eclectic mix of iconic songs that heralded the folk revolution, the album pays tribute to celebrated artists such as Simon & Garfunkel, Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell.

How did The X-Factor experience shape your career in the music industry? It taught us so much about performing and communicating … there is nothing like the pressure of a TV show to shape you as a performer. Every week we learnt something new and learnt from our mistakes, which allowed us to grow as artists.

How did you get into the world of music and entertainment? Both our households were filled with music when we were kids, Matt started on the drums and Jess’s grandfather found a guitar on the side of the road and gave it to her for her 11th birthday. That began her whole song writing journey. We both taught ourselves guitar and started performing wherever we could.

You have worked with some amazing mentors including Chris Isaak, who also sings on the album. What do you gain from that? Having a mentor like Chris Isaak is just so special because he’s had over 30 years experience in the industry … he’s had ups and downs and had so much advice for us as budding artists. He always said someone took him under their wing and mentored him at our age, and he wants to do that for us.

You are partners both on and off stage. How does this dynamic work? When we first became a duo the dynamic was very different. We were solo for so long that we took a while to find our rhythm, but being on a reality TV show helped us communicate under pressure. We have been together for eight years and have probably spent a week apart, so we already feel like a married couple. How do you unwind after a long day of performing or hours spent in the recording studio? We love sitting on the lounge, snuggled into a blanket and tucking into a movie, Matt ALWAYS wants to watch a comedy and Jess always want to watch some kind of crime horror.

natural E C O - F R I E N D LY

AUSTRALIAN MADE

Songs from the Village features some iconic covers. How did you choose these particular songs? Our parents played these records to us as kids, and the first time we ever heard vocal harmonies were Simon & Garfunkel and Peter, Paul & Mary … we had no idea how much of an impact these incredible songs would have on us as adults. These songs are why we became musicians, and we have our parents to thank for that.

W Y S E L I F E S TYL E . C O M . A U

You also retraced the steps of these folk revolutionaries across many of their stomping grounds in New York City … how was that? We went to all the places these artists originally played. Bob Dylan, Peter, Paul & Mary and Simon & Garfunkel played in The Bitter End, this legendary pub in Greenwich Village, so we tracked it down and put our name down for an open-mic. We played on this tiny little stage, the same stage where our idols once stood, singing the same songs. It was really surreal.

SUBSCRIBE NOW

Do you have a favourite track on the album and why? Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right is one of our favourites, as it’s one of the more raw and honest moments on the record. Bob Dylan is such a wordsmith, and this song sounds so beautiful on the outside, but the lyrics are so sarcastic … that is the real beauty of Bob Dylan.

Only $40* for one year (6 issues).

Are you working on any original material? If so, when are we going to get to hear it? We are always writing music wherever and whenever we can. Even when recording this album in Nashville we found so much inspiration. We drove from Nashville to New York (about a 17 hour drive) and wrote some of our favourite songs on the road. We’re heading back to the US to make some final touches and you should be hearing them very soon. What’s in store for you for the future? Amongst getting married in September, we would love to get this album on the road … we are working on something very special as we speak. This record has taught us the power of music and that songs can stand the test of time. We want people to be listening to our music years from now and still have the same connection as when they first heard it.

21 - 30 SEPTEMBER Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers

23 SEPTEMBER Fantasy and Nationalism

FROM 26 SEPTEMBER Priscilla Queen of the Desert

With spectacular gardens, live entertainment, local food and wine plus much more, Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers is a cultural party celebrating all things spring. Highlights include The Grand Central Floral Parade, The Qantas Gala Dinner and The Night Garden powered by Ergon Energy. New for 2018 this magical creation is based in Queens Park and features stunning floral and lighting displays and experiences.

This afternoon performance by the Chamber Players at the Queensland Symphony Orchestra Studio, South Bank is all about contrasts. Written in four sections, Saint-Saëns’ Fantaisie is a light, delicate piece that reflected his recently developed ideas on clarity. By contrast Khachaturian’s Trio is full of loud patriotism that can be heard in the second and third movement’s folk dances and songs, while Brahms’ Sextet No.1 boasts expansive outer movements with a classical structure and a flamboyant finish.

Based on the Oscar-winning Australian film, Priscilla Queen of the Desert is the hilarious story of three friends who hop aboard a battered old bus in Sydney bound for Alice Springs to put on the show of a lifetime. Treasured Australian actor, Ray Meagher, will reprise his role as outback mechanic ‘Bob’, joining the cast for the musical’s Brisbane run at Lyric Theatre, QPAC.

LEO 24 Jul – 23 Aug

The solar eclipse on August 11th suggests it's time to turn a corner. It will become clear that this is the year you will increasingly enjoy expressing your true purpose. Let your light shine as your personal life could flourish. But if a relationship has shown non-stop longterm strain, it may be time to go your separate ways. You'll appreciate the chance to find more balance in life.

SAGITTARIUS 23 Nov – 22 Dec

ARIES 21 Mar – 20 Apr

VIRGO 24 Aug – 23 Sept

CAPRICORN 23 Dec – 20 Jan

Your sign's ruler, Saturn, will make a promising aspect to Uranus, suggesting that your more innovative plans, especially to do with your personal life, domestic and creative realms, could truly gain traction. A fresh phase may be about to unfold in your shared resources, duties, responsibilities or finances. Be bold, and keep an eye on what's fair and equitable for best results.

TAURUS 21 Apr – 21 May

This will be an ideal phase to put your ideas in action; and also to boost your health and wellbeing. The Pisces Full Moon on August 26th will be inspiring and could also encourage you to let go of habits that no longer resonate with you on a deep level. Once chatterbox Mercury is in your sign from September 6th, you'll feel increasingly stimulated to network and socialise.

LIBRA 24 Sept – 23 Oct

AQUARIUS 21 Jan – 19 Feb

GEMINI 22 May – 21 Jun

SCORPIO 24 Oct – 22 Nov

PISCES 20 Feb – 20 Mar

CANCER 22 Jun – 23 Jul

You'll appreciate the opportunity to bring more harmony into your life over the next two months. The solar eclipse on August 11th may spotlight a favourite project, study, travel or another venture that broadens your horizons. But if you feel your duties, work and simple practicalities mean you must delay some of your exciting plans, be ready to innovate and adapt to circumstances.

August will be excellent for reviewing your circumstances; and also for revitalising key aspects such as your social life. You'll appreciate the chance over the next two months to improve your love life. Once the Sun enters Libra on September 23rd, prepare for life to get busier. The Aries Full Moon on September 25th will be reenergising, especially in your close relationships.

The solar eclipse on August 11th suggests a fresh chapter within a key partnership, business or personal, especially if it's your birthday early February. For some, there will be a key development in your status or career; for others, changes in your daily routine. Take the time to consider which activities and past-times really do provide a sense of purpose, and put your focus there.

You’ll experience the effects of the solar eclipse on August 11th most prominently in your career, general direction or even status. If you feel your resolve is tested and your will is eclipsed by that of someone else, find a way to be assertive, not aggressive. Romance and your creativity could blossom and if you feel you lost your mojo recently, it's set to return; watch out!

Get set to turn a corner in your work, health or daily schedule. You may feel particularly passionately about a past-time, and will feel all the more purposeful in pursuing your interests. However, if you clearly encounter opposition, it may be necessary to consider how to best share your ideas and knowledge in the interests of a peaceful and mutually satisfactory outcome.

A fresh chapter is about to begin in your domestic or personal life. To overcome obstacles, there must be give and take. Venus in Libra will certainly help you to find more harmony and balance in your love life, but care must be taken to observe the wishes of those you love. A project or plan that has been bubbling under the surface could become more feasible.

Some wonderful career opportunities are best tackled head-on, so engage negotiations that enable you to move forward, rather than getting stuck with a stale mate. The eclipse on August 11th may spotlight where your activities no longer resonate with your bigger-picture ideals. You could achieve important milestones now if you engage in practical terms with your goals.

For June Crabs, the solar eclipse on August 11th will spotlight a key financial project that must be negotiated carefully. For July Crabs, there may be domestic or personal matters that will benefit from tact and diplomacy. A shared project should create a sense of accomplishment over the next two months, providing concrete change in your daily life, status or interests.

The partial solar eclipse on August 11th will spotlight a personal ambition, and exactly what you must do to make it happen. If you feel there is opposition from those you must share your dreams with, consider being willing to compromise, as this could work in your favour. Take the time to adjust to new circumstances, especially in your personal or domestic life.
