A woman in charge Designer of the iconic wrap dress, Diane von Furstenberg on power, money and getting what you want.

WORDS ANNA MURPHY / THE TIMES / THE INTERVIEW PEOPLE

DIANE VON FURSTENBERG is remembering how her mother, an Auschwitz survivor, would shut her in a cupboard as a little girl. “She would say, ‘Fear is not an option’. She would lock me in there so I wouldn’t be afraid of the dark,” the iconic designer recalls. For how long? “About ten minutes,” she continues breezily. “And the truth is, I am glad she did it. First of all, it doesn’t stay dark. Second of all, what are you afraid of? It is just dark. It was the best gift she gave me.” It is hard to imagine the 71-year-old Belgian-born American ever being afraid of anything or anyone. She is stretched out before me on the sofa of her suite in Claridge’s in London like a big cat, wide-eyed and languid, occasionally delving one-handed at two halves of a pomegranate. She is, notes Nathan Jenden — her label’s new chief design officer, sitting neatly near by — ‘very feline’. She certainly is. A kind of leopard lady. Her movements are so smoothly feral that one suspects she has ball bearings rather than joints. At her neck and wrist are huge diamond-and-sapphire-speckled evil eyes. Why does she wear them?

“For protection. Everybody needs some protection.” I am not so sure. Now one of the world’s most recognised designers, von Furstenberg built her brand on a different kind of talisman, the wrap dress. “I quickly realised I was selling confidence,” is how she puts it. She launched the frock in 1974, the unlikely hybrid of a ballerina top and matching skirt, in what was, at the time, game-changer jersey. What she refers to by turns as ‘just a stupid little dress’ and – more accurately – ‘an icon’ landed her on the cover of Newsweek two years later. The magazine declared her ‘the most marketable woman since Coco Chanel’. By that point she was shifting 15,000 a week. Why all the fuss? “The big thing was the fabric, which moulded the body at the time when everything else was stiff. And the prints had movement. It was an attitude, at a time of women’s liberation. People felt feline.” >>

They felt like her, in other words. Von Furstenberg is her dress. Her dress is her. For DVF consumers she is inextricably woven among the warp and the weft. Why? Because she became a highly visible, highly successful working woman when there weren’t many around. Because she was photographed in the press wielding power, both professional (perched on the edge of a desk) and sexual (arrayed across a bed). She united sex with the city long before any TV series came along. And she still stands out, even when being an empowered woman is no longer such an anomaly. For her customers, wearing her dress was – is – a way of being more DVF, more fearless. It’s also a way of working one’s femininity, one’s curves, to just the right degree for the office. “When you work you want to look good, you want to look strong,” she says. “You want to show off your body – why not? – but not in a way that will make men objectify you.” Her wrap dress is not only a one-stop solution to the problem of what to wear in the morning – ‘this brand is all about solutions’ – it is also the ultimate two-hander. “Someone once said something to me that I thought was so perfect: ‘With this dress you seduce the guy, and the mother doesn’t mind’.” It could all have been very different for von Furstenberg. For starters, it was by no means inevitable that the alumna of a flashy Swiss boarding school should end up working for a fabric manufacturer in Italy, albeit one that supplied brands such as Gucci. “When you are young you have all the doors in front of you, right? And this was certainly not the most glamorous door.” It was even less inevitable that, when she became pregnant by Egon von Furstenberg – “he was the perfect catch: rich, a prince, all of that ... he goes to America and all the girls want to marry him” – her first response was that she needed to have, to do something on her own. “The idea of getting pregnant with someone who was such a good catch made me look like I had done it on purpose,” she says. “I did not want to be that. Do you understand?” So, yes, she said she would marry him, despite, she claims, initial prevarication. (“At first I said to my mother, ‘I don’t want to do this.’ She said, ‘He asked you to marry him, so the least you can do is let him be a part of the decision’. So I sent him a telegram. He sent me one back. We arranged a wedding in Paris for mid-July.”) And yes, she agreed to move to the US to be with him. Yet she went with the jersey samples she had ordered from her factory in Como. >>

“There was absolutely no reason for me to work,” she says. “I just thought I would make some clothes that would sell. I didn’t think I would have a label.” Then they did, and so she did. “Your first independence is your financial independence. That is why I tell every woman that they should absolutely work and have an identity outside the home. Otherwise it is terrible,” she insists. Initially, Egon was ‘extremely supportive about me working as an idea’. They had two children together, but the marriage ended around the time that brand DVF went thermonuclear. Von Furstenberg consoled herself with a roster of lovers that included Ryan O’Neal and the man who would eventually become her second husband, Hollywood mega-mover Barry Diller. There have been more bumps in the road since then, personal and professional. A brush with cancer. A skiing accident that almost destroyed those signature lynx-like cheekbones. By 1990, she writes in her autobiography, appropriately titled The Woman I Wanted to Be, “I was quite lost. My business, what was left of it, was in tatters.” Still, as her mother once said, when explaining how she had survived the concentration camp: ‘It’s like rain. You go through the drops’. In recent years – aided by a partnership with matchesfashion.com – she has rebuilt her brand. “I noticed that a new generation of girls were buying the old dresses in vintage shops, and that’s when I thought, ‘OK, how does this brand continue?’.” In 2016 she hired British designer Jonathan Saunders to be her chief creative officer, yet that relationship ended a year later. “Jonathan is wonderful,” she says. “He has this amazing sense of print and colour. But … it is not that I am anti-fashion, but the one thing I have always been is not a fashion victim. “I can’t have sleeves that are too long, you know what I am saying? At the end it’s got to be functional. I have never worn something that’s uncomfortable.” Now she has back on her team Jenden, who worked in the DVF studios for many years. “He’s a real designer. To make something simple you need even more design.” “Fashion with a capital F is not as important as it was,” offers Jenden, who, courtesy of the von Furstenberg force field, has been forgotten about. (He seems blithely unconcerned, the perfect qualification for a job in which he will, of course, always be the sidekick.) “All fashion designers are getting inspired by the street,” he says. Von Furstenberg’s existence is a long way from the street. The one moment in our conversation when she is lost for words is when I ask her

how important money is to who she is. A very long pause. “No one has ever asked me that question.” Another pause. “Listen, I am very lucky because I have a wonderful life. Two things happen with success. You pay your bills and you have a voice. And if you have a voice, you have to use it for people with no voice.” One of her initiatives is the DVF awards, which recognise ‘women dedicated to the transforming the lives of other women’. “To use your magic wand is one of the nicest things that happens to you when you get older,” she says. As for her age. Von Furstenberg claims not to be bothered by it. “Age means you have lived. I am 71, but I should be 140 I have lived so fully.” She finds today’s attitudes ‘humiliating’. “Even young girls are doing things to their faces. Not wanting to say how old they are when they are 32. Age is … you should embrace it.” She starts scouring her nasolabial lines with her fingertips. “I used to carve into these lines when I was young because I wanted to have them.” However, even she seems to worry about the possible ramifications for the brand of the date on her birth certificate. “How do you differentiate the brand and the person, especially as the person gets older?” It’s that issue she’s been struggling with for almost four decades, just slightly more boldface. “I relate so much with these millennial girls because I was what they all are being now.” She’s right. In a way this is more of a DVF moment than the first time round. Working women don’t have to travel incognito any more. Offices are populated by women in dresses, not suits, as never before. Her challenge – Jenden’s – is to make sure they have the right label in them. “People have an emotional attachment to the brand, to the feminist aspect.” They need to leverage that. Von Furstenberg and her husband live suitably fabulous and somewhat semi-detached lives. In New York they have separate homes. Why? “I like it. Even in LA I often use the guest room because he sleeps with two dogs inside the bed.” Luckily there’s plenty of room to spread out on Diller’s superyacht, Eos, too, which is said to have a glass staircase and a figurehead of Mrs Diller by the model-turned-artist Anh Duong. “We have an amazing relationship. I have known him for 44 years. He was my lover, then my friend, then my husband. Barry loves me to be successful. “But … I have always talked about the idea of a woman in charge. So for International Women’s Day I printed some T-shirts that said ‘Woman in charge’. And he doesn’t like it when I wear that T-shirt. Which is weird, because it’s not at all him.” Needless to say, she wears it anyway.

ICONIC BRANDS

What’s cooking? Established in France almost a century ago, Le Creuset cookware has become an international icon. WORDS SUSAN LANG-LEMCKERT

FEW, IF ANY, brands could claim to still be employing essentially the same production techniques they were using 93 years ago, but Le Creuset is no ordinary brand. And as well as using their original methods of manufacture, Le Creuset is still produced in the original factory set up in Fresnoy-le-Grand in Aisne, France, in 1925. The siting of the factory on the transportation routes for the raw materials of coke, iron and sand was only the first of many strategic moves that led to Le Creuset becoming an icon in cookware. Le Creuset was the vision of Belgian industrialists Armand Desaegher and Octave Aubecq, who’d met at the Brussels Fair and decided to combine their respective specialties of casting and enamelling to create top quality items of cast-iron cookware. They produced the first Le Creuset cocotte in 1925, using a single-use sand mould – the practice that is still used today, and which ensures the uniqueness of each item. Most of Le Creuset’s processes are done manually by their dedicated and well-trained factory employees in France. A cast-iron cookware takes approximately 120 hours to create and each piece is unique. Over time, more products were added – cookers, charcoal stoves, hot plates and kitchen utensils – and Le Creuset soon became known for its style and superior quality. Difficult years followed with advent of the Second World War and its aftermath but, come peacetime, Le Creuset recommenced production and began to soar. Their focus on enamelled cast-iron pieces set them apart from competitors, as did their innovation with types of cookware and the use of vibrant hues of enamel. By 1952 Le Creuset’s renown was such that export to other parts of Europe and to the United States was a significant part of the company’s growing market. Le Creuset continued to create new markets by combining traditional manufacture with innovation in design and colour – the Le Creuset Barbecue and the shade Elysées Yellow being two standouts from the early 1960s. Innovation came again in the 1980s: Le Creuset adapted products to suit the ceramic hobs that became popular after the introduction of the Vitrobase, and launched the Multifunction Cocotte when the health benefits of steaming food caused a shift in customer choices. >>

28

DID YOU KNOW? • ‘Le Creuset’ means ‘the cauldron’ – in which the raw materials for all Le Creuset pieces are melted before casting. • Each Le Creuset product is unique, having been cast in a single-use sand mould that is broken up after use. • Every Le Creuset piece passes through at least 15 pairs of skilled craftsmen’s hands during the manufacturing and finishing process. • Each Le Creuset piece receives two coats of enamel: the first being a ground coat which, once fired at 840°C, is clear and allows the coloured second coat to better adhere to the cast iron. • More than 10,000 cast iron products are made every day at the original Le Creuset foundry in Fresnoy-Le-Grand in Northern France. • Le Creuset has manufactured more than 300 million products during its 93 years of operation. • T he very first colour Le Creuset produced in 1925 – Volcanic Orange, the company’s signature shade – was inspired by the fiery orange of the molten iron used to cast each casserole. • The most expensive Le Creuset set ever sold – a set of Elysées Yellow’ cast iron pieces – belonged to Marilyn Monroe, and fetched $25,300 at Sotheby’s in 1999.

In the 2010s, Le Creuset introduced the new Signature Cast Iron Casseroles as the next evolution of its enamelled cast iron cookware. This updated kitchen classic features a range of new design enhancements especially developed to offer even better durability, versatility and comfort of use when cooking. The new features include: easy clean, toughened enamel interior; easy-grip, 45 per cent larger handles; enhanced, tight-fitting lid; and stylish, heat-resistant stainless steel knob. Today’s diverse global market is evident in Le Creuset’s vast range of items that cater for different cuisines, such as the French tatin dish; the Japanese sukiyaki cocotte; and the Indian Karahi and Balti dishes. And, as always, it’s the eye-catching colours – Cerise, Volcanic, Satin Black, Coastal Blue, Creme, Cool Mint, Bluebell Purple and Chiffon Pink – that truly set Le Creuset apart. The latest colour, Deep Teal – not quite green and not quite blue, but combining the tranquil qualities of both – is currently gracing an extensive range of Le Creuset items, including accessories. Making world-class cookware for almost 100 years, Le Creuset is used, loved and trusted by leading chefs and keen cooks around the globe. Combining striking design with unbeatable performance, the Le Creuset 3-ply Stainless Steel and Le Creuset Toughened Non-Stick collections embrace all the brand has learned from making premium cookware since 1925, utilising its expertise and passion for delicious food to create Australia’s best-loved, market-leading cookware. The Le Creuset 3-ply Stainless Steel and Le Creuset Toughened Non-Stick cookware collections comprise a wide variety of pans from deep and shallow frying pans, saucepans and casseroles to woks, grills and a roaster in addition to complementary accessories such as heat-resistant glass lids, spatter guard and a roasting rack all designed to deliver a lifetime of delicious cooking. Striking the perfect balance between maintaining the traditional methods of casting and enamelling and innovating to meet changing markets has seen Le Creuset grow from small regional industry to major global brand in less than a century, realising the dream of two industrialists whose auspicious meeting at a fair would change the evolution of cookware forever.

Island sweets Famous for its sun and surf, Hawaii is also home to these ‘must try’ desserts.

WORDS AND PHOTOGRAPHY MARJ OSBORNE

HAWAIIANS LOVE DESSERT. Alongside their plate lunches, locals are tucking into desserts that reflect the history of the nation, such as malasadas brought by the Portuguese, haupia (coconut pudding) from Polynesia, and soufflé pancakes from Japan. Here’s a guide to some of the treats we enjoyed on a recent trip to Hawaii to start you on your own sweet journey. Much loved malasadas, deep-fried balls of sweet yeast dough rolled in sugar, are Hawaii’s answer to the doughnut. There are only a few places where they’re made to order, Leonard’s Bakery being the most famous. This family-run restaurant commenced trade in 1952, making doughnuts the next year for Shrove Tuesday ... and ever since. They’re now an obsession, shoppers carrying easily identifiable Leonard’s pink boxes around town. Haupia is a traditional coconut milk-based Hawaiian dessert often found at luaus and other local gatherings. It’s gluten and dairy free, but certainly not calorie free. The traditional Hawaiian version of a plate lunch we sampled at the Waiahole Poi Factory in Kaneohe comprises smoky kalua pork, poi (taro root), lomi lomi salsa and haupia (coconut pudding). Since World War II, haupia has become popular as a cake topping, especially on white cakes at weddings. For decades, Ted’s Bakery at Haliewa on the North Shore has been catering for people from

62

around the world, bringing them Hawaiian dishes for sustenance to tackle (or watch) the big waves. Ted’s most famous pie is the chocolate haupia cream pie, its layers of smooth dark chocolate custard cream and haupia topped with whipped cream … a decadent treat. Hawaiian shave ice is next generation. Matsumoto Shave Ice at Haleiwa began trading in 1951, often serving over 1,000 shave ice daily. Our favourite, however, is Island Vintage Shave Ice on the first floor of the Ala Moana Shopping Centre (also in front of the Royal Hawaiian at Waikiki). Their Heavenly Liliko’i combines passionfruit and strawberry shave ice with frozen yoghurt and popping passionfruit boba, served with homemade mochi and condensed milk. Superb. Bring mochi to a warmer climate, and you get mochi ice cream. It’s for sale at supermarkets, or buy it from Bubbies Ice Cream in the Koko Marina Shopping Centre, or closer to Waikiki Beach at Mauna Kea Mist in Ala Moana Shopping Centre. The Mauna Key Mist shop in Ala Moana also sells the viral Instagram dessert, dry ice-frozen mist balls, named after the dormant volcano Mauna Kea. Pop a frozen ball of cereal into your mouth and you too can breathe out mist just like a volcano. Be warned, however – don’t swallow the liquid ice. Liliha Bakery is famous for their coco puffs, available in regular custard, chocolate, and green tea, selling over 5,000 daily. With a choux pastry-like crust, the chocolate-filled puffs topped with Chantilly are served cold.

The unassuming Aloha Kitchen near Ala Moana is a Japanese-influenced café that makes a very light soufflé pancake, probably derived from Gram Café’s triple-stack version. Aloha Kitchen serves one huge pancake topped with fresh tropical fruit, banana and coconut with macadamia nuts. The pancake is so fluffy and airy that it melts like a cloud in your mouth. Dole pineapple ice cream is legendary. The Hawaiian Pineapple Plantation, (later the Dole Food Company), at one time grew 75 per cent of the world’s pineapples. By 2007, all the canneries in Hawaii had closed, however pineapple remains one of the island’s favourite fruits. The Dole pineapple is juicy and sweet without any sour aftertaste at all. Fumi’s Shrimp Farm on the North Shore serves a non-dairy Dole pineapple ice cream which is preservative and additive free. It’s simply delicious. Michelin-starred London restaurant Yauatcha created their ‘Tropical Dome’ for the opening of Yauatcha Waikiki in the International Marketplace in 2017. Using European culinary techniques, Japanese attention to detail and tropical ingredients such as coconut dacquoise, liliko’i (passionfruit) and pineapple captured within a dome, this dessert is a little taste of Hawaii glistening in the sun.

WINE CELLAR

Balancing act The 2018 Queensland Wine Awards showcased a wide variety including a very special Sagrantino from Balancing Rock Wines.

WORDS TONY HARPER

BALANCING ROCK’S 2015 Sagrantino won the title of Champion Wine of Show at the 2018 Queensland Wine Awards. That’s great, I hear you mutter, but what the hell is Sagrantino, and who is Balancing Rock? We’ll get to that in a moment, but first I’d like to talk about the awards and what they mean for Queensland. This year marked 35 years of the awards, and I can’t help wondering what the inaugural event was like back in 1983: much, much smaller, for sure, and with a much tighter range of varieties (no Sagrantino I’ll bet). This year had close to 170 wines entered – certainly not every wine that’s made in the State, but a good representation – incorporating all of the producing regions, from the Granite Belt in the south, to the Burnett Valley and as far west as Saint George (440 kilometres west, south-west of Brisbane as the crow flies). But the real diversity came with the mix. Shiraz was the variety with the most entries (15 in total), and that’s a good thing – it’s a grape that does well in much of the state, making spicy, medium-bodied wines in the cooler areas, and plusher, more brooding reds in places like the Burnett Valley and the Scenic Rim. But the class for reds ‘other than’, which means other than shiraz, cabernet or merlot, was the biggest of the day with 34 entries.

64

It contained (aside from Sagrantino) Graciano, Tempranillo, Sangiovese, Barbera, Nebbiolo, Durif, Montepulciano, Petite Verdot, Malbec and Saperavi: Boom! And the ‘other than’ white class had things like Fiano, Roussanne, Viognier, Petit Manseng, Marsanne, Riesling and Pinot Gris. It’s quite a collection, and it could be taken for a lack of direction, except for one small point … Queensland is leading the country with many of these varieties, and plenty of people – myself included – see this motley collection as the linchpin for Australian wine over the coming century. Global warming, easy access to wines from anywhere on the planet and a morphing of taste are shrinking the market for the French varieties grown on Australian soils. With some notable exceptions we live in a country of warm to hot regions, and grapes that thrive in the valleys of Spain and Portugal, in the southern districts of Italy, on Corsica and Sardinia, in Greece and South America are better suited to much of Australia than the traditional grapes we’ve taken from France and Germany. One of those varieties is Sagrantino. It’s a grape native to central Italy … Umbria. And even there it is a rare beast, but one that has become more and more important over the past couple of decades.

It makes a bold wine – high in tannin and colour (thick skins, loads of pigment) and oozing flavour. And even in Australian hands it has more savoury characters than fruitiness; that’s a rare treat. David and Lori Broadbent have the only Sagrantino vines in Queensland, on their Balancing Rock property, ten or so kilometres south of Ballandean. The vines are 11 years old, so still yet to reach their full potential. Mike Hayes makes the wine, and the word he uses to describe his approach to the Sagrantino is … traditional. Which translates to relatively low yields (to keep the intensity and density of flavour), a two week pre-ferment cold soak, which helps to build colour; letting naturally occurring yeasts kick off the fermentation before inoculating about half-way through the process. Then it’s into used oak barrels for eight months. Simple hey? What is so special about the wine? For starters it has power and muscle. Not the brash, rich fruit and lashing of oak that, say, some well known Aussie shiraz producers might rely on. It’s a more brooding, firmer wine, less hedonistic perhaps but far, far more interesting, more textural, more satisfying mouthful after mouthful. At least I think so.

Its savoury nature makes it something you can ponder and spend time with … and it’s great with a meal. It will cellar well, perhaps improving for a decade, possibly more. But even now, as a three year old, it is gorgeous and a fitting recipient for the Champion Wine of Show. Hard on its heels were two other brilliant reds – 2016 Robert Channon Reserve Shiraz and 2017 Hidden Creek Tempranillo. I wonder if Tempranillo will prove to be the wonder-kid grape for Queensland. So many exceptionally good wines have been made here from the variety, and when you think about the parts of Spain and Portugal in which it thrives (Rioja, Riber del Duero, Penedes in Spain; Alentejo and the Douro in Portugal) it’s not hard to make the jump to Queensland, particularly the diurnal extremes of the Granite Belt. And while the Sagrantino may have pipped the Tempranillo on the trophy table, there is much more Tempranillo being grown in the State, and time after time they prove its worth. Overall there were 13 gold medals, 20 silver and 46 bronze awarded – that’s half the field lining up for an award. It’s a great result, and a perfect illustration of the talents and strengths of Queensland’s wine growers.

Enjoy your holiday, wherever your destination and whatever means of travel you choose.

WORDS RHONDA OXNAM

A LUXURY verandah suite or a state-ofthe-art villa? An international odyssey or a hinterland staycation? One of the best things about travelling takes place before you even leave. Pouring over maps, researching destinations, planning itineraries, booking flights, cruises, hotel rooms … the anticipation in the lead-up to your departure date. Then, there is the journey itself. If you are cruising you get to unpack and unwind from the moment you step on board. Flying allows time to relax away from phones, emails and other distractions as you wing your way to an exotic location. And, of course, a local break means less travel and more time to enjoy the ambience and amenities of your chosen destination. Another great aspect of travelling is the experiences that remain in your memory long after your passport is put away and your bags unpacked. I have two computers monitors in my office … one features an image of Glacier Bay in Alaska, the other Turtle Island in Fiji.

66

Every time I sit down at one I am immediately transported to the top of a glacier where, after a helicopter ride over some of the most stunning scenery I have ever witnessed, we had the adrenalin rush of guiding a dog-sled across the pristine white snow. If I am working on the other, my mind recalls the magical wedding of two complete strangers who have become close friends even though we live on opposite sides of the world. The bride gliding across the water in a beautifully decorated raft covered in palm fronds; the groom watching barefoot as she was carried across the sand by two warriors in cultural costume; the rest of the guests misty eyed as their union was celebrated in song by the local people. Or I am sitting on the top of a mountain enjoying a Fijian feast as the ocean crashes against the rocks below and the melodic voices of a children’s choir serenade us in the background. And both photos remind me that there are many other wonderful people and places just waiting to be discovered. So, whenever and wherever you choose to travel, be sure to enjoy the journey.

AT THE WHEEL

A new dawn The Rolls-Royce Dawn Black Badge convertible is so glamorous and luxurious, it’s almost decadent.

WORDS CHRIS NIXON

THE OLD SAYING ABOUT ROLLS-ROYCE was that if you needed to know the price, you obviously couldn’t afford one. When it comes the latest model, the Dawn Black Badge convertible, it certainly will help if money is no object. If you must know, its recommended price before options and on-road charges is a heartstopping $850,000, making it one of the most expensive cars for sale in Australia. With options including an exquisite silverhandled umbrella with fabric colour-coded to the Bespoke paint and upholstery, the Dawn Black Badge for Cove’s review was priced at $975,000 on-road. A very wrong assumption about modern Rollers is that they’re designed for old people. This might be because it used to take a lifetime to accumulate the wealth needed to buy one, but these days somebody with a clever start-up business can become a billionaire overnight and the sporty Dawn Black Badge convertible would be a fitting reward for a young tycoon. For the record, the curret average age of Rolls-Royce owners is just 39. I’ve driven two Rolls-Royces in recent years, including the Dawn Black Badge on a balmy Queensland winter day, and been surprised at how up to date they are in both technology and design.

78

In fact, the technical superiority of a new RollsRoyce may be less than it was when the make first earned its reputation as the World’s Best Car. Engines, transmissions and other major components once were hand-assembled with watchmaker precision and there was a vast step down to the engineering tolerances accepted in cheap, volume-built cars. But computer technology has ensured similar accuracy – albeit perhaps of just a slightly lower standard – is now built into everyday cars, ensuring unheard-of reliability, durability and efficiency. Rolls-Royce itself is able to take advantage of the vast, high-end expertise of its owner BMW. Savvy mechanics – or technicians, as they’re called now – would no doubt recognise a few common parts under the skin of both makes. This isn’t to suggest in any way a 3 Series Beemer drives like the Dawn Black Badge. The Dawn is awesomely refined in its mechanical smoothness, ride comfort and quietness – probably the only car better would be one of the Rolls-Royce saloons, where the cabin would be cocooned even more snugly. Awesome describes this car in every way. It’s everything an ordinary driver would imagine a Rolls-Royce to be. It’s a massive 5.3 metre, four-seat roadster weighing almost 2.6 tonnes.

The engine is a 6.6 litre, twin-turbocharged V12 monster that delivers 442 kilowatts of power and 840 Newton metres of torque, both figures slightly more than an ordinary Dawn as part of the Black Badge enhancement package. This massive power thrusts the Dawn from rest to 100km/h in 4.9 seconds and to a governed maximum speed of 250kmh. When you put your foot down, you know it: the feeling is you’re commanding something immense and unstoppable. Black Badge, also available as versions of the Ghost saloon and popular Wraith coupe, literally stands for a black badge but encompasses much more. The badge on the most famous prow in the car world features reversed double-R graphics – silver on a black background. Other signifiers are black-chrome finish for the Spirit of Ecstasy mascot, radiator grille surround, boot trim and exhaust tips. The moulded carbon fibre wheels (exotic, light and strong) are shiny-black and feature R-R centres that stay upright while the wheel turns. The last time I saw this eye-catching bling was on a gangsta-style Cadillac SUV in Los Angeles. While the macho-black touches obviously are a pitch to the Dawn Black Badge’s younger target market, the paintwork and trim are in universal, sublime good taste.

BENOWA MANSIONS PERIODONTAL AND DENTAL IMPLANT PRACTICE

The colour on the review car was called Bella Donna. It carried through from the paintwork to cabin highlights such as embroidered logos in the headrests, leather piping in the door panels and seats and a thin strip across the dash. This contrasted with off-white leather door trims, black leather seats and door caps and carbon fibre – replacing the usual wood veneer – across the fascia. The Dawn’s self-closing, rear-hinged doors are huge. The opening is so wide, elegant access or exit is assured. The folding roof might be black canvas, but it has a seven-layer lining and when erected is as snug as a fixed-roof car. Throughout, the interior design is stunning and flawlessly hand-crafted to the finest detail. My goodness, this is a magnificent car. It’s so glamorous and luxurious, it’s almost decadent. As mentioned, the Black Badge is the sporty choice in the range, a position that seems slightly incongruous for a Rolls-Royce. The maker says the Dawn Black Badge is designed for ‘the more demanding lifestyle requirements of a younger, more dynamic patron of luxury’. To match this claim, the Black Badge gains a bundle of mechanical enhancements to make it go faster. There’s the more powerful engine. Once upon a time Rolls-Royce power was simply described as ‘adequate’ and never specified, but even if its output were unknown the Black Badge announces its potential with a bass rumble from a bi-modal exhaust. Imagine – a Rolls-Royce in which the only sound you can hear is not the clock. The eight-speed automatic transmission is tweaked to respond more urgently to the throttle during acceleration and to provide more engine braking during deceleration. The German-made ZF transmission responds to inputs from GPS navigation, which scans the road to predict the correct gear for corners or elevation changes ahead. It operates undetectably, in part at least masked by the overwhelming engine power. The Black Badge speed-sensitive steering is sharper, suspension more controlled and the brakes bigger. On the road, the world’s most luxurious convertible feels surprisingly lively and nimble and, importantly, not the least intimidating. It gets up and boogies in a straight line and dances around corners with reassuring poise, if not the agility of a pure sports car. The Dawn Black Badge surely is one of the finest examples of the modern Rolls-Royce era and, down to its last screw and stitch, designed, engineered and built to the highest standards of a unique marque. It’s available ‘on commission’ from the Bespoke division and I imagine rich-listers everywhere are putting down their money to own one of the most desirable cars in the world.

Standalone showroom Ferrari revs into the Gold Coast.

BOASTING THE LARGEST concentration of Ferraris in Australia, the Gold Coast will soon welcome a standalone Ferrari dealership in partnership with Frizelle Sunshine Automotive. Work is well underway on the Gold Coast’s first exclusive Ferrari showroom and high-tech service centre at 76-78 High Street, Southport, which is set to open in October 2018. Ferrari Australasia CEO Herbert Appleroth said the launch of the local dealership was thanks to the record number of sales in the region over the past few years. “The all-new Ferrari Gold Coast showroom is integral to our growing dealer network in Australia and globally,” he said. “Queensland is Ferrari’s strongest new car and pre-owned market with continued strong sales growth and a seemingly insatiable demand.

80

“It’s important to find a partner that understands the local market and can perform to the inimitable Ferrari standard. We are very excited to welcome Frizelle Sunshine Automotive to our network.” Australia has a longstanding history with Ferrari and its position as a market of global significance has continued to develop in recent years. Since the Ferrari Australasia office was first established here in 2014, the business has seen unprecedented growth and consecutive years of record sales. On a per capita basis, the Gold Coast is one of the strongest markets in the world for Ferrari. Last year, national sales for the high-performance marque grew by 23 per cent marking the fourth consecutive record sales year for Ferrari in Australia.

The luxurious Italian-inspired Ferrari Gold Coast showroom and service centre will span across 1,937m2 with much of the interior fit-out and furniture imported from Italy. While construction continues at the new Southport showroom, Frizelle Sunshine has opened an interim sales centre at Sanctuary Cove. “The multi-million-dollar investment and commitment by Ferrari Australasia and Frizelle Sunshine Automotive Group will result in a new world class automotive facility at the Gold Coast and create 11 new jobs for locals,” said Rebecca Frizelle. “Sanctuary Cove is home to one of the largest concentration of Ferraris in Queensland. It seemed fitting to launch Ferrari in its heartland.”

Bespoke approach Create your ideal kitchen with custom cabinetry.

THE KITCHEN is often described as ‘the heart of the home’ but in these days of mass production and cookie-cutter designs how do you get something unique, practical and of the highest quality? According to Leighton Ward from luxury kitchen and bathroom showroom Wood Marble & White, the answer lies in taking a bespoke approach to each and every project. “At Wood, Marble & White there is no prefabrication,” explains Leighton. “Each piece is made to order and every detail is carefully considered. Made to measure means what it says, all our furniture is specifically tailored to the client’s space, choices and lifestyle.”

82

Leighton and the Wood Marble & White design team are behind the stunning kitchen and bathroom installations pictured, having collaborated with designer Claire Ball from Look Interiors on the custom-designed joinery that features throughout the Gold Coast home. “Our client wanted a luxury Hamptons aesthetic, with a bit of an edge,” says Leighton. “We’ve crafted the spaces to be seamless in style, as these areas flow into the home’s social zones.” The company’s craftsmanship and attention to detail is evident throughout the entire project. In the stylish kitchen, there’s no break in the joinery line, so even the door to the basement is concealed into the design, while the custom-made

table and chairs in the adjoining dining space are perfectly tailored to fit. The sophisticated material selection including a Calacatta marble top sourced from CDK Stone, Quantum Quartz Alpine white on the Shaker-style doors and panels finished in Dulux Natural White Satin 2pac create a classic yet contemporary feel, while the Miele appliances including two integrated fridges and two ovens make for easy cooking and entertaining. “The finished space has a great social feel,” says Leighton. “And our clients absolutely love it.”

Live outside Creating a welcoming indoor/outdoor sanctuary allows you to entertain all-year-round.

IN SOUTH-EAST QUEENSLAND we are blessed with blue skies and warm weather all-year-round, which makes outdoor entertaining a pleasure. Unfortunately we also have to contend with pests, leaf debris and other factors that can ruin the ambience. This is where Queensland company, Suncoast Outdoor Living, come in. Their professional team can help bring your entertainment and living areas together, creating a practical and welcoming indoor/outdoor space. “For over 25 years we’ve been offering a range of products to add value and enjoyment to your home,” says Suncoast Outdoor Living Managing Director Tony Mora.

84

“We are finding that more and more people are keen to plan ahead and make their outdoor entertaining areas as maintenance free as possible, meaning they can then relax and enjoy their leisure time at home. “For example, an insulated patio roof or unique outdoor screen around your existing outdoor area or over your swimming pool doesn’t just look great, it adds value to your property and is ideal for the relaxed outdoor lifestyle we get to enjoy in Queensland,” he says. Along with pool and patio enclosures, Suncoast Outdoor Living also offer insulated patio designs, pool safe screens, retractable screens, pet enclosures and other outdoor accessories.

“We first started operating in 1993 under the name Suncoast Enclosures,” Tony explains. “Over the years our friendly service and quality enclosures gained a strong reputation and our business grew to include more services designed to help you enjoy the outdoors. “By 2015 it was clear that our products and services had evolved, and we rebranded ourselves as Suncoast Outdoor Living as this better reflects what we have to offer.”

ART DEPARTMENT

Artist in residence Sunshine Coast painter Natalie Dyer has gained an international reputation for her quirky works of art.

WITH HER WORKS on display in private collections around the world, fine artist Natalie Dyer continues to inspire and be inspired. What led you to being an artist? I remember when I read the quote by George Bellows (1917) ... ‘It seems to me that an artist must be a spectator of life’… it just made so much sense to me, it was one of those light bulb moments. I have always felt like I could just watch and observe life as it happened around me, to be totally invisible as I took it all in, truly a spectator. I get very moved by motion and emotion, interactions, little nuances that I notice happening between people, animals, and nature. They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, so I guess my taking what I see before me and replicating it though my eyes and interpretations is a way of being grateful and truly enjoying what I see. We all have creativity within us, which obviously can be expressed in many ways and forms by different people.

88

I do believe creativity is a really important ability to nurture and cultivate in our lives, as it acts like an internal pressure valve for us to release stress and anxiety. The bonus then being that it brings about joy and a sense of achievement when you create something you are happy with, especially if it is enjoyed or useful to others. Do you have a particular ‘style’? A lot of people are very fond and familiar with my ‘Women with Attitude’ or ‘French Connection’ series, and while I predominately paint women in various styles and genres, diversity is something I really get to enjoy with my commission work. I get asked to paint anything from portraits of people and animals to sea/city and landscapes, flowers, even abstracts. I have lots of small and large prints available, some on paper and some large on canvas, usually limited editions, something for everybody including a large coffee table book. Apart from personalised or customised pantings I also offer a decorating service whereby

chosen pictures of my art can be digitally placed on a clients wall if they are unsure of how a piece will look in their situation. What are the challenges of being a professional artist? I always struggle to tell people I’m a professional artist when I am asked what I do, because most people tend to think the life of a full time painter is somewhat carefree, bohemian, loose and unstructured, when in fact often it is totally the opposite. You generally have to work twice as hard as anyone else. What are some of the more enjoyable aspects about your career? I love my art to make people smile, or make them ponder and reflect … I know then that something has resonated with them and I have touched some emotion. Because I create a lot of personalised commissions for my clients, it’s always thrilling to see and hear their responses when they see their art for the first time.

Where has your career taken you? I have been very fortunate with my art, it has taken me to many places around the world and created some fantastic opportunities for me. I was invited to be a guest of honour at the Malaysian International Shoe Festival for the release of Jimmy Choo’s brand new couture range and have my work beautifully presented to Professor Jimmy Choo. I have also been aboard numerous beautiful cruise liners as a guest artist, travelling to Asia, Hawaii, Canada, New Zealand and around Australia; I was taken to Perth to create 225 original works for a five-star boutique hotel and have also been involved in numerous exhibitions throughout Australia, Singapore and Malaysia. Most of all though I have had the opportunity to meet and paint for so many lovely, lovely people.

It is often a little bit of a process, whereby they supply me with photos of whoever is to be in the painting, a little bit of information on the characteristics of the people, maybe favourite wines, jewellery, sports, etc and things that they all commonly say and do when they get together. It is so much fun and I often end up feeling a part of the family, so every painting tells a personal story, very much a family heirloom to be passed down.

26 OCTOBER United Nations Comedy Gala

Opera Queensland is bringing a new production of Mozart’s masterpiece, Don Giovanni, to the QPAC Playhouse. Conducted by Johannes Fritzsch with rising international star Duncan Rock making his Australian principal debut in the title role, this Don Giovanni is set in working class Victorian London where Jack the Ripper stalks and the aristocracy lurk to get a taste of the seedy side of life – a world where women’s bodies and lives are dispensable.

Oktoberfest Sunshine Coast promises to deliver a traditional family friendly, fun event. Patrons will see the Kawana Sports Precinct transformed into a Bavarian-themed festival, complete with giant beer tent, alfresco dining, stages and children’s rides and activities. Authentic German food and beverages will be served by local businesses that have a rich ancestry.

Join a comedic line-up of global proportions at The Star Gold Coast for two-and-a-half-hours of side-splitting laughs. International comedy superstar Joe Avati will be accompanied by ethnic comedy pioneer George Kapiniaris, versatile comedian Tahir and stand-up Simon Palomares. SCORPIO 24 Oct – 22 Nov

Plan to bring more peace and harmony into your life, and your projects will succeed. Avoid intense interactions and power struggles, and ensure communications are clear as the next eight months could be tumultuous – or intriguing, at the least. You’ll gain a deeper understanding of someone close in November as your finances are due a shake-up – for the positive.

PISCES 20 Feb – 20 Mar

CANCER 22 Jun – 23 Jul

SAGITTARIUS 23 Nov – 22 Dec

ARIES 21 Mar – 20 Apr

The New Moon on October 9th will help revitalise many of your relationships and a contract or agreement could arise that is mutually beneficial, despite the need for a little negotiation. If you’ve been single for a while, the plethora of planets in sexy Scorpio should ramp up your love life. This will be a passionate phase. Just watch that greeneyed monster jealousy.

LEO 24 Jul – 23 Aug

By focusing on health and wellbeing in October you’ll establish strong foundations for happiness. In November, the entry of Jupiter into your sign is considered good luck. However, Jupiter can also exaggerate feelings and all sense of proportion risks flying out the window unless you adopt a balanced approach to new opportunities that will undoubtedly come your way.

CAPRICORN 23 Dec – 20 Jan

TAURUS 21 Apr – 21 May

VIRGO 24 Aug – 23 Sept

AQUARIUS 21 Jan – 19 Feb

GEMINI 22 May – 21 Jun

LIBRA 24 Sept – 23 Oct

You’ll be increasingly inspired to follow your passion – both in your hobbies and at work, and as a result, you’ll attract like-minded people. You should also gain more security at work, in your status and financially. Both your earning and your learning potential is set to soar. Your endeavours will succeed – in the learning curve of life, at the very least.

You’ll turn a corner in October and are likely to find increased stability and security as a result. Your relationships should flourish – unless you give in to negative or intense feelings that over-ride common sense. A karmic or soul connection may have a strong influence over you. If you maintain focus on what – and who – is most important to you now, you should excel.

Developments that seem to come out of nowhere may take you by surprise in October, but will offer the opportunity to reconsider which of your interests you’d like to resurrect; and where in life you can let some activities go. Developments at the end of each month, both October and November, could take you into fresh territory. Just ensure you follow a therapeutic plan.

Key decisions at work and in your general direction and status will have far-reaching consequences, so ensure you’re happy about the decisions that you make over the next two months. A charming and dynamic character may influence you in your decision-making, so ensure their values align with yours, or be prepared to re-think some of your principles and ideas.

A trip, meeting or simply the chance to touch base with someone you love over the next two months will make your heart soar. You’ll appreciate the chance to delve more deeply into favourite interests. Spiritually minded Leos may experience a revelation. It’s an excellent time for introspection, and to devote more attention to yourself – and those you love.

Your changing role – be this as a parent, partner, or at work – will bring new qualities to your life. You’re likely to embrace your creativity more, and you’ll enjoy music, art, film, good food and company. And, with Jupiter ramping up your earning potential, you’re likely to be busy, especially in November, when some lovely contacts could help boost your status.

You’ll appreciate the opportunity to revitalise close relationships in October. Find the time to put in place fresh plans in your personal life before October 5th, as you’ll be more likely as a consequence to enjoy working with positive dynamics throughout the following few weeks. Prioritise certain tasks to avoid feeling drained. A revitalising health schedule could suit.

Your changing status, direction or career may surprise you as you step into out-of-the-ordinary territory over the next two months. This may play out at home, in your family or creatively. And, if some developments mean you must be superresourceful, you should find by the end of October, at the least, that your strength will create a fresh beginning and more stability.
