Help a bloke Not-for-profit foundation, ‘It’s A Bloke Thing’, host fundraising and awareness-raising events to assist Prostate Cancer research, care and education. IDRIS ELBA – the Hackney-born Hollywood megastar who broke through in The Wire, consolidated on Luther, scored an OBE in 2016, and categorically refuses to answer any more questions about whether he’ll be the next James Bond – has a cold, which is why (he says) he’d rather not shake my hand when we meet. The actor has just flown in to London from New York, where he attended US Vogue’s Met Gala in a tuxedo he helped Givenchy custom-design for him. He thinks he picked up a virus on the plane. We’re interviewing over lunch, in a genteel tearoom in the Langham hotel. Elba’s voice is bassy and (even when inhibited by a cold) east London forceful, for which I’m grateful: it cuts through a piano playing loudly in the background. “What drugs are you on for the cold?” “Nothing,” he says. “I try not to.” “That’s silly,” I say. I produce painkillers from my bag, click a couple out of their foil wrapper, hand them over. Elba swallows them, then says, “Right. I’ve just taken your drugs so I’m trusting they are what you say they are.” “They’re ibuprofen,” I say. “It’s never crossed my mind to drug an interviewee.” He laughs, perhaps a little sheepishly. “That would be a Neil Cross [writer of Luther] moment,” he says. >>

I wonder if he’s maybe been in too much corrupt cop TV for his own good. It’s colouring his view of humanity. In person, Idris Elba is fabulously imposing. Forty-six years old, 6ft 2in tall, broad and handsome as hell, grey-flecked and elegantly gym-buffed. He’s a presence, a strider, a consumer of

I am surprised, therefore, to find that he is a reluctant interviewee, wary and suspicious, resistant to even the most innocent question. For example: Sony film producer Amy Pascal once described him as ‘the best version of masculinity’. Does Elba think he is that? “What?” The best version of masculinity …

space, a commander of attention. He’d be all of those things even if he weren’t famous, but as it happens – he is. Unlike swathes of his acting contemporaries, Idris is no Eton-filtered Oxbridge-glossed posho. He’s true east London working class, the only child of Winston, a Sierra Leonean father, who emigrated to London in the 60s and worked at Ford Dagenham for 30 years, and Eve, a Ghanaian mother, last seen smiling broadly in the Daily Mail while accompanying her son to Buckingham Palace when he picked up that OBE. Elba has ducked and dived and grafted and taken all sorts of creative and real life risks to get to the place where he is today. He is, on multiple levels, the real deal.

“What do you think that means, though?” he asks. “Like, someone [Elba is referring to another journalist; ours is his last date in a round of interviews] said to me earlier today, ‘What’s your feminine side?’ And then she reeled off a couple of actors and she said, ‘One likes to sew and one likes to read a lot’ and I said, ‘Well, that’s not necessarily feminine, is it?’ “Because when I grew up, my mum taught me how to cook and iron. I don’t consider that feminine or masculine. So ‘the right sort of masculine’ … I think that Luther is definitely a brawny, loud man-child, but at the same time, there’s vulnerability, there’s sensitivity, there’s calm, there’s poise …”

He’s hoping I won’t notice he’s started substituting the psychology of his fictional counterpart, DCI John Luther of the BBC’s Luther for his own, personal psychology. But I do. And are you like that, Idris; a sensitive, vulnerable, brawny loud man-child? Pause. Haunted rabbit look. “You notice my resistance to talk about me?” Yes. It’s making my life quite difficult. “I’m sorry.” Elba riffs on how awful journalists are, how unreliable, inclined to take things out of context. We’re just interested. You’re famous. You are of interest. Isn’t it worth it? “I think people don’t realise that … it’s one thing to be famous, as in, celebrated for your work, another to be in the public eye.” Does he wish he wasn’t ‘public-eye famous’? “If I could go back, would I want to be in the public eye? No.” Still, the past 15 years have seen the actor take on the most complex, powerful, formidable and deeply male roles the film and TV industry has had to offer.

He was introduced to acting while at school in Canning Town, east London. He was a workingclass teenager, a too tall, too big, only child, whom the tough boys felt compelled to try to fight. This made him self-conscious, but drama classes made him feel liberated. Was it immediately obvious he was talented? “Ah, you know when you’re good at something, don’t you?” he says. >>

He was spurred on by a desire to impress his ‘beautiful drama teacher, Miss McFee’. Supported by a grant from the Prince’s Trust – the reason he ended up as a guest at the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle – Idris won a place at the National Youth Music Theatre; training that would lead to a first part in a Crimewatch reconstruction, a cameo as a gigolo in a 1995 episode of Absolutely Fabulous, and another, a year later, in period medical drama Bramwell. Idris was also DJing, working nightclubs, which, he says, gave him the edge in auditions. “Likeability is what I homed in on very quickly, when I started to meet casting directors,” he explains. “When you’re a DJ, you meet a lot of people. People like DJs because they’re always friendly; if they’re not, people don’t like ’em. “I would use that confidence to walk into rooms. Whether I got the job or not, I would make an impression: ‘Hey, I’m an open guy. I’ll speak to you; I’ll take notes; I’ll take your criticism and keep it moving …’ Casting directors trusted that.” In his early twenties, he got a regular part on the daytime soap Family Affairs. “Jobbing. Coasting. Five days a week, and I was paid handsomely. I was single. Having a great time. Nice car. Nice flat. I was loving it.” But 90s London was not enough for Elba, who left for New York in search of DJing gigs and bigger acting roles. He had no money, no contacts, and – judging by my experience of him today – less innate

confidence than you might assume. But his drive, his ambition, wouldn’t let him be. He lived in Brooklyn, took auditions and survived by DJing. In 2001, just as things were getting truly dicey, Elba was cast in HBO’s The Wire, a project that would make good use of the American accent he’d honed while living in New York, and would also make him a star – if in an odd, unreliable way. The Wire – that gritty, epic spectacular featuring the corrupt cops and drug-dealing underclass of Baltimore – was a slow burner of a sensation. It was shot and broadcast in the earliest 2000s, in a time before social media; news of its genre-defining brilliance spread much more slowly than it would had it been made now. By the time word did get out, the show was on its third series, and Elba’s character, Stringer Bell, had already been killed off. In a strange coincidence the actor became suddenly, intensely famous – precisely as he left the show. “That was bizarre. And really overnight. Suddenly, walking into pubs, it was, ‘Wow’,” he recalls. It would take another five years for the BBC to sign him up for Luther; and it wasn’t until then, in 2009, that his career – and troublesome, enduring public-eye fame – was assured. We talk a little more about Luther, the official business of our day.

It is the fourth time Idris has reprised the role. He’d intended to take time off, to dedicate time to DJing, which he does under the names DJ Driis or Big Driis but he felt he couldn’t not do this fifth series of Luther. “I remember going, if I don’t do it, that’s the end of the show. I need to do it …” He attempts to analyse the nuances of Luther’s fictional psychology again. I distract him with talk of Luther’s coat: a tweed affair that’s become synonymous with the character. “Yeah! I remember, early on, we decided, ‘He will wear one coat’. They wanted us to change it: ‘He’s not wearing this silly coat. He needs to wear a suit’. And we were, ‘No. He’s wearing this coat and he won’t wear any other coat, and we won’t even discuss why he never changes his clothes’.” Much has been made of Idris Elba’s looks, especially recently, when he’s been increasingly tipped to take on the role of James Bond from Daniel Craig. I ask him how hard it is to be a man in Hollywood now, with #MeToo raging, and he says he doesn’t think it’s any harder than it ever was. “It’s only difficult if you’re a man with something to hide,” he insists. I turn my tape off. Elba lingers behind a little, perhaps to reassure me he really can be open and cool – just as long as there’s no recorder running.

Gold Coast designer Liz Clift continues to make her mark in the world of fashion.

SHE IS A HIGH PROFILE, multi-award-winning designer, however, Liz Clift’s career in fashion began almost by accident. “I started designing and making my own clothes when I was 16 because I couldn`t find anything I liked off the rack,” she explains. “My designs were so unusual I was inundated with orders from friends and boutiques.” Liz went on to design wardrobes for movies and television; stage garments for entertainers and rock bands; and uniforms for cruise ships, luxury hotels and resorts. She has also been a fashion writer, illustrator and editor and her couture gowns have not only sold in Australia but many states in America.

Liz studied at the Paris American Academy, a prestigious school of fine arts where her lecturers included Karl Lagerfeld, Sonia Rykiel and Chantal Thomas to name a few, and she was recently appointed the International Ambassador for the Academy. During her time in Paris Liz was also honoured to interview Marc Bohan, head designer at Dior. Unfortunately, her husband at the time did not want to live in France so they returned to Australia and Liz went on to open a high profile boutique and shoe store at Benowa Gardens. “The business was very successful but after 25 years I decided it was time to retire, sit back and relax, however, this was not to be,” she says.

She recently interviewed Brook Shields in front of 2,000 people in L.A., attended Haute Couture week in Paris (with the highlight being the Elie Saab show) and flew to Turkey where she is mentoring a client opening a fashion store on the Turkish Riviera. She has also been invited to speak on her career in front of 1500 people in Johannesberg. Personally, her life is enriched with a loving family including husband Bill, children Andrew, Michelle and Brandon and grandchildren Hudson, Lennox, Ashton and Ace. “I’m now at the stage in life where I want to give back and I’m loving the role of mentor to businesswomen and fashion students,” she concludes.

A Kitchen and Bathroom Designers Institute member, in 2016 Wayne accomplished a fantastic achievement by taking out the prestigious KBDI Queensland Designer Small Kitchens award. Edgy & elegant Interior designer Keeley Green draws on her international experiences to create stylish, much-loved spaces. FROM AN EXPATRIATE childhood in Africa and Papua New Guinea followed by English boarding school to moving to Florence with her children in 2012 to study a Masters in Interior Design, Keeley Green’s journey has taken her to many corners of the globe. Now based back in Australia, Keeley has opened her own interior design studio in Brisbane, although her international lifestyle continues as she makes regular trips to Europe to meet with her business partner, Florence-based artist Amanda Ferragamo. The pair established Ailanto Design, a luxury interiors brand producing high-end wallpaper and fabrics, two years ago and their products are now stocked in Harrods and many other quality retailers world-wide. Can you share a little bit about your background and how you ended up in interior design? My childhood fired a natural curiosity in the way we live in different cultures and, as such, how our built environment looks. However, I didn’t realise until adulthood how much of an impact my early years had on me in terms of design aesthetic. As is so often the case, my career slowly morphed from marketing into interior design. I was part of a private property development business for 16 years, specialising in retirement villages and shopping centres, and I slowly became more and more involved in the planning, design and implementation of our developments. I gained a huge amount of experience and it became clear to me that design is my passion. In 2012 I moved to Florence with my children to study and from there opened my own studio in London. Home is where the heart is though so in 2016 I moved back to Australia. Why did you choose Florence? Who wouldn’t love to live in Florence? Florence has a fantastic design school where I studied, a wonderful International School for the children, warm culture, interesting personalities and so much history.

Every day of living in the historic centre is akin to living in history, wonderful stone buildings and cobblestoned twisting streets with their very narrow sidewalks making it quite difficult to navigate. If you have the time (rather than frustration) this leads to wonderful adventures of the ‘where am I kind’ where you stumble across amazing discoveries. There are many learning opportunities in Florence from cooking to art history, sketching and venetian plasterwork. It’s also a great city to learn the Italian language given that it offers it in its most correct form from a pronunciation perspective. Geographically Florence is centrally situated, allowing for easy access to the coast, Tuscan countryside and many wonderful cities. What is your design philosophy? A space must go above and beyond in serving the purpose that it’s to be used for, so, for me, understanding my client and then subsequent space planning are very important. From there I like to create a timeless design that’s a pleasure to living in or use. Do you have a signature look? A house should look collected, a representation of the people that live there. In that way I like to incorporate existing pieces with some antiques, as well as more modern pieces, providing layers and interest. If someone is looking for that one ‘statement’ piece, what would you recommend? I actually think a room only ever needs one statement piece for ‘wow’ factor … any more and you lose focus. For a living room I would recommend an amazing piece of artwork or a mid-century or antique chair to work back with more comfortable case goods.

What do you see as the ‘must-have’ trends for 2019? There is a return to maximalism (as opposed to minimalism) in artwork and furnishing. Floral designs (and botanicals in general) are also enjoying a resurgence, whether detailed or simplified and applied to wallpaper, fabrics and artwork. In that way we are also seeing nature more readily incorporated into our homes through materials such as wood and stone and even indoor greenery, which works very well with our indoor/outdoor lifestyle. The elegance of metals are also being incorporated but in a more understated way through small details. Are you influenced by broad design trends or do you have an individual style? My consistent design style is edgy elegant. I would say that I take elements of broad design trends that I find interesting and translate them into my own style. What has been your career highlight to date? The recent completion of The Old Vicarage, a beautiful family country home in the midlands of England. We refurbished, extended and added a home office building. I designed and specified everything internally which included floor plan layouts; kitchen design; five bathrooms; home office; library; five bedrooms; living area; home cinema and the list goes on. Every room contained either custom cabinetry or furnishings. It was an amazing project of which I had full design control and took two years to complete.

Thai time Create authentic Thai flavours at home with this tasty lamb recipe from House of Siam. Kari lamb

Ingredients 500g lamb, diced 2 cloves garlic, crushed 1 tablespoon grated fresh ginger 1 onion 1 red or yellow capsicum (optional) 3 tablespoons vegetable oil 100g yellow curry paste 140ml coconut milk 1Â˝ tablespoons lime juice 1/3 cup coriander, chopped Plain flour for dusting (GF flour optional)

Serves 4

Method 1. Dust lamb lightly with flour, set aside. 2. Cut onion into thin wedges. 3. C ut capsicums into quarters and slice crossways. 4. Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a non-stick frying pan. 5. A dd diced lamb and cook over a medium heat for 4 minutes or until lightly browned. 6. Remove and wipe out pan with absorbent paper. 7. Heat remaining oil in pan.

8. Add onion and capsicum, stir over heat for 2 minutes. 9. Add curry paste and lamb. 10. Cover and cook over low heat for 30 minutes or until lamb is cooked through. Stir occasionally. 11. Stir in coconut milk and lime juice; reheat. 12. Serve sprinkled with coriander.

Froth & bubbles A new breed of grower-producers is creating champagnes to rival those of the traditional houses.

IT’S NOT SO MUCH THAT THE CHAMPAGNE (with or without the capital C) has drastically altered. It’s more that Australian champagnescape has changed ... and in a big way. What was a smallish pond dominated by a few big fish (Moët & Chandon, Veuve Clicquot, Louis Roederer and a handful of others) is now a turbulent water populated by hundreds of smaller fry. Sure, the big guys are still here and still the major players, but those champagne-drinkers who consider themselves to be serious about the stuff laud the wines made by the grower-producers – the small guys making champagne from their own plots of land, often pushing boundaries in terms of style and production methods: brave stuff in a region so long bound by poker faces and staunch adherence to tradition.

Two such little guys (and, for that matter, two of my favourites) are Andre Clouet and Pierre Peters – dark and light, ying and yang, stylistic opposites but philosophical twins. Their differences lie in where their respective vineyards lie, and in the grape variety used. Champagne – at least the traditional stuff – is the ultimate blended wine; a mix of grapes, a mix of vineyards, usually a mix of multiple regions and for the most part a blend of vintages. Krug Grande Cuvée, for example (always a fabulous wine) is ‘a blend of more than 120 wines from ten or more different vintages’. And the sources for the grapes that make up these intricate blends is traditionally dominated by contract growers – the vineyards actually owned by the champagne houses making up a minority of the blend.

The grower-producers have turned all that on its head. As the name implies, the wine is made by the guy who grows the grapes. It’s not a new practice in Champagne – the English have been trotting across the Channel forever, snapping up discount champagnes direct from the growers' cellars. What is new(ish) is the startling quality coming in the guise of minimally blended champagne, and the number of small growers producing them. Which brings me back to Andre Clouet and Pierre Peters. Andre Clouet has its vineyards in the Grand Cru villages of Bouzy (yes, that’s the real name) and Ambonnay – two legendary spots for growing Pinot Noir (Krug’s Clos d’Ambonnay sells for around $6,000 a bottle).

So it’s no surprise that the Andre Clouet champagnes are almost solely made from Pinot Noir. The only exceptions come from a few rows of Chardonnay (midst the Pinot vineyards) destined for the Andre Clouet Vintage (a 50/50 blend) and the rare, exotic Dream Vintage crafted from 100% Chardonnay. Pinot Noir makes rich, rather full-bodied champagnes – masculine, sinewy, able to tackle robust food. And while Andre Clouet crafts relatively elegant champagnes, they are definitively Pinot Noir – structured, redfruited, complex and rich. Its Grande Reserve Brut NV is a spectacular entry-level, underpriced (remember, it’s made entirely from Grand Cru fruit) champagne; silky, complex, rather dry (there is a bone-dry version called Andre Clouet Silver) and gorgeously attired in its blue and gold livery. There are two flagships in the Clouet lineup, the first of which is 1911 – a rare (only 1911 bottles produced each release), quite dramatic champagne made from a collection of ten of the best parcels from the Bouzy vineyards, fermented in both stainless steel and barrel, assembled from vintages stretching from 1997 to 2002, then aged on lees for six years before disgorgement and release. It is a very, very complex champagne in which the aged components play a very important role – characters of brûlée, nuts and good sherry. It’s a marvel. Then there is Clos de Bouzy, bottled only in magnums. The source is an old, walled vineyard directly behind the winery. It’s a vintage wine (currently 2006), fermented, like 1911, in a mix of stainless steel and old barrels, and it sits on lees for eight years. I’ve never had the pleasure of tasting it, but the reports are stellar. Pierre Peters tells a similar story to Andre Clouet, but tells it in Chardonnay (Blanc de blancs) rather than Pinot Noir. Its vineyards are found in Mesnil, Cramant, Avicenna and Oger – vineyards every bit as impressive as those owned by the Clouet family. If Andre Clouet and Pinot Noir based champagnes smack of richness and sinew, Pierre Peters and Chardonnay embody finesse and elegance; yellow and white fruits, toast, butter, lemon. Chardonnay plays woodwind to Pinot Noir’s strings. And if Pierre Peter’s rather plain labels seem a little drab next to the opulent artworks on Andre Clouet, the wines do not. The champagnes of Pierre Peters are something of a cult – hard to find, quickly grabbed on release, and rarely shared with the uninitiated. Cuvée de Reserve is the backbone of the house in terms of productionsize and the unflinching commitment to upholding the house style. It (and I’m quoting here) ‘marries the clear wines of the year with more than 15 years of reserve wines’. That’s quite a commitment, particularly for a bottle of champagne that sells for less than $100. At the other end of the hierarchy is Cuvée Speciale Les Chetillons. Sourced from three parcels of old (40 - 70 years) vines in the Les Chetillons vineyard in Mesnil Sur Oger, it’s a stunning example of the heights that pure Chardonnay champagnes can achieve; immensely complex in a supple, mineral-laden way. It whispers its charms rather than shouting them, but only a drooling fool could miss them. Les Chetillons is a champagne to age (something that seems true for most good blanc de blancs), gaining stature and complexity, its characters morphing from nectarine and blossom to toast and curd, nut and honey. Andre Clouet and Pierre Peters are by no means the only or the best of the grower-producers. There are other hallowed names like Anselme Selosse, Agrapart, Ely Ouriet and Larmandier Bernier ... these days it’s quite a long list. From sleeping on an ice bed to witnessing the spectacular Northern Lights, a visit to the Arctic Circle is a truly special experience.

THE ARCTIC CIRCLE is literally and figuratively the polar opposite of the Gold Coast, especially in December, but that was where we found ourselves having boarded SAS Airlines at Heathrow and flown to Kiruna in the north of Sweden. We spent a week in Jukkasjärvi, which is only 2,400kms south from the North Pole; our accommodation, The Ice Hotel, the world’s first hotel made of ice and snow. There are two parts to this magical place, warm rooms in chalet type buildings and the actual Ice Suites where the entire room is sculpted out of ice – including the bed. Each room has a different theme; ours featured reindeer sculptures and was called the ‘Oh Dear’ Art Suite. Of course, we couldn’t travel all this way and not spend at least one night ‘on ice’. We picked up our thermal sleeping bag from reception and were given instructions on how to prepare for this surreal experience of sleeping on a bed of ice topped with a padded bag and reindeer skin.

A surreal experience but after lots of giggles we went out like lights. We were gifted a certificate the next morning as proof that we actually slept at -5 degrees, however, once was enough for us and we were very happy to move back to our ‘warm’ room for the remainder of our stay. The hotel also has an Ice Bar, where you sit on blocks of ice carved from the frozen Torne River topped with reindeer skins. Drinking cocktails from ice tumblers in this snow white, picture-perfect wonderland was quite magical and there was a great atmosphere as we chatted to the staff and other guests. We had all our own gear to wear in the extreme climate, however, the hotel will supply the onepiece snowsuit, snow boots, gloves and beanie if required. Another evening we joined a group for a reindeer experience that gave us some insight into the life of the Sámi, the local Indigenous people of the Arctic Circle region.

To this day, they still herd the reindeer and after a sled ride, we fed the animals and were given the option to eat reindeer meat, which I’m told was succulent and tender. During our visit the sun rose at 10:30am and set at 12:30pm so you had to make the most out of the daylight hours. Enjoying a regular walk to our local coffee shop when at home, we continued the ritual and found a café in a tepee with an open log fire. While the Sámi would cook up a meal of reindeer meat if desired, at that time of day we settled for a coffee and muffin. The temperature was around -13 degrees and it was quite strange to be out and about in the pitch black when it’s only 2pm. We did find our body clocks struggled with this phenomenon but, of course, in summer they experience days with no darkness at all. The local restaurant, the only one in the village, boasts a Michelin Chef and the food is excellent. The absolute highlight of our stay was the Photographic Northern Lights tour. >>

We were met in reception by our photographer who provided each person with a quality camera and tripod. After purchasing a memory card we were given a crash course on how to capture the northern lights. There were clouds throughout the day so it was doubtful whether we would be lucky enough to see the lights but our tour guide was diligent. He kept ringing his counterparts throughout the region to find out if there were any ‘openings’ in the sky. We had to drive for over an hour before eventually arriving in a forest away from the lights of ‘civilisation’ were we set up the cameras and proceeded to wait. An hour went by and the Arctic wind was horrendous. The tour guide said it had dropped to around -20 degrees and bundled us into the car with the heater going to keep our core temperature up. Suddenly the sky opened and at that moment no one thought about the cold as we ran out again and clicked away capturing this beautiful phenomenon. The colours were breathtaking and so memorable. This entire trip was an experience of a lifetime, certainly something that I had on my bucket list and would thoroughly recommend.

Even edgier Aston Martinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s new DB11 V8 forges traditional style with contemporary design.

CHANGE is often necessary, but it can be tricky when applied to a brand for which heritage is everything. That’s Aston Martin, which for generations has been known for ultra-smooth lines and bespoke quality. It was all right when Sean Connery was Agent 007 and drove the stately DB5, but Daniel Craig needs something edgier. The Aston Martin DB11 reviewed here replaced the DB9. It’s arrived at the image-refresh Aston needed via the sharply-styled DB10, which you won’t find in a showroom because it was custom-built only for the Bond film Spectre. The clean-sheet design DB11 is unmistakably Aston Martin – still with its familiar cues such as the smooth front-engine profile and low, wide front grille, but now there are edges where there used to be soft curves. When introduced with a V12 engine in mid-2017, the DB11 was announced as the first of seven new Astons in the pipeline – a no-holds-barred brand makeover, then. The V8 Vantage followed with a decidedly aggressive, bad-boy look appropriate to its role as the pure sports car in the range. Among models still to come are a Vanquish replacement, a Lagonda sedan, an SUV called the DBX and the ultra-exclusive, Formula 1-inspired Valkyrie. Vantage and a subsequent variation of the DB11 share a V8 engine supplied by the performance arm of Mercedes-Benz, AMG. Building a new in-house engine would be hugely expensive for a small-volume maker like Aston Martin, but the bought-in AMG V8 fits the bill perfectly. For a start, these engines are regarded highly among enthusiasts for their power and character. It would be difficult to do better. With twin turbochargers force-feeding the 4.0 litre engine, fuel consumption and emissions outputs are reduced while performance is increased – an essential requirement for manufacturers trying to meet evertightening clean-air regulations. The DB11 V12 is a magnificent powerplant worthy of eventual museum status but it’s increasingly inappropriate for the times unless you’re an oil mogul. >>

In the alternative V8 DB11, less might be seen to be more. There’s relatively little difference in price – $395,000 vs $368,000. General specifications are closely similar, but the V8 wins with superior efficiency, kerb weight reduction of 115 kg and near-equal front-rear weight balance. Immediately, it’s clear the V8 is the DB11 for owners who prefer a sportier drive. A large portion of the weight-saving is over the nose. Lift the bonnet and you’ll see the engine is positioned a long way from the front, behind the axle line; take the wheel and pitch the car into a tight corner and you’ll feel the front tyres respond accurately and bite hard. The V8 delivers 375 kiloWatts of power and 675 Newtonmetres of torque (those turbos at work to typically bump up the torque) and a 0-100 kmh acceleration time of 4.0 seconds. If that’s no longer insanely fast by supercar standards, it nonetheless feels it when you hear that thunderous engine at full noise; and it gets louder as you wind up the selectable driving modes from GT (everyday) to Sport and Sport+.

While the DB11 is very, very enjoyable on a short, fast blast it’s really a GT car intended more for rapid touring. And it’s a doddle to drive around town. There are two tiny rear seats. The boot could be bigger for touring holidays, but if the weather turns bad at least it contains a beautiful Aston Martin umbrella. The cabin is beautiful, featuring quality leather hand-fitted and stitched. It’s superbly comfortable, as long as you’re not in those rear seats. Stowage space for small items like phones isn’t generous, although there is a centre console bin with an electrically-powered lid that slides open in two stages. The fascia layout is straightforward in design and use. I liked the fact the digital instruments can be configured for personal preference – putting the navigation display straight ahead, in my case – and that the main gear selection for the eightspeed automatic transmission is just four buttons on the centre panel; no gear lever. Individual gears are picked with fingertip paddles behind the steering wheel, although during normal driving the V8’s lazy pulling power makes them completely unnecessary.

While the lighter V8 DB11 is impressively nimble, it has some limitations. Its size takes some getting used to from behind the wheel. The bonnet is long and wide, making accurate placement of the front wheels a learned skill. The car weighs a considerable 1,760 kg, which is felt on tight roads. With this bulk, standard 360-degree cameras are a huge help when parking or manoeuvring in tight places. Carelessly scrape the 20-inch wheel rims or the front undertray or tap the nose on a wall and you’ll score an Aston Martin-size repair bill. And you wouldn’t want to do that, because it’s such a handsome beast from every angle. Unfortunately, the black-on-dark grey colour scheme of the test car hid the best of the DB11’s beautiful new lines but I’d buy one in a light colour … in a heartbeat.

Waterfront gold New research reveals the demand for waterfront property on the Gold Coast is at a premium.

A NEW REPORT has found that waterfront homes in three Australia cities command a price premium that beats some of the hottest property markets in the world. The 2019 Knight Frank Global Waterfront Monitor reveals that Sydney and the Gold Coast sit at the very top of the tree with prices that far exceed the average global premium of 40 per cent. The report essentially offers a snapshot of how deep buyers are prepared to dig into their pockets to secure waterfront properties. It compares the difference in prices between waterfront homes with equivalent dry-lot properties located elsewhere in each city. Knight Frank calculates that Sydney harbourside homes are the world’s most in-demand properties, with an 89.3 per cent premium compared to the broader market. Gold Coast waterfront homes come a close second with a premium of 64.1 per cent. Perth, at 53 per cent, completes the Aussie trifecta, closely followed by Dubai (51 per cent) and Paris (48 per cent). This is the first time the report has been compiled and, according to Knight Frank, it shows that not all prime waterfront properties are created equal because premiums vary by locations and amenity.

The report found that harbourside homes generate the highest average premium of 59.1 per cent globally. “However, at 58.5 per cent, a beachfront home is not far behind with Sydney and the Gold Coast registering some of the highest uplifts,” says the report. The Gold Coast may be a surprise inclusion in this global list, but not for Michelle Ciesielski, Knight Frank’s Australian director of residential research. “The Gold Coast has been on the global platform for many years now, in particular with coverage from the Commonwealth Games,” she says. “In 2016, the Knight Frank Wealth Report identified the Gold Coast as one of three residential hotspots for second homes around the world.” Along with the Gold Coast, the Wealth Report also named the Cote d’Azur on the French Riviera and the Spanish holiday island of Ibiza as perennial favourites among the super-rich for a second home. “Competitive prices, compared with Australia’s top cities, plus strong fundamentals – local population growth and expanding tourism – continue to underpin demand along the Gold Coast’s 57-kilometre coastline,” Ms Ciesielski says.

“The premium paid for waterfront properties on the Gold Coast is from a combination of owneroccupiers, and in particular those downsizing. They’re seeking high-quality homes situated along the beachfront and on the river to combine the lifestyle of having access to their luxury boat and water views from most rooms.” Limited supply of waterfront locations is a key driver of high premiums on the Gold Coast. “Houses located only a few streets back from the Gold Coast waterfront are situated in generally low-lying areas, so the potential for water views becomes quite limited until you move out beyond the suburbs to the foothills,” Ms Ciesielski says. While Sydney’s premiums are driven by the tussle for the best views of the Harbour Bridge or Opera House, the Perth market is skewed towards new homes along the beachfront. Waterfront premiums diminish to 30.4 per cent in Melbourne, well below the global average. However, the Melbourne premium is in line with that of London’s waterfront properties. As for who is likely to buy on the water, the Knight Frank report reveals the Brits, Americans and Canadians lead the pack globally, followed by the Germans, French, Swiss and Australians.

In the lead up to Shen Yun’s Gold Coast performances, accomplished dancer and choreographer, Yungchia Chen, tells of his life and new home with Shen Yun in New York.

“LET’S START AGAIN FROM THE TOP,” he says as the music fades out to a roomful of winded dancers. The session should have long been over. But for Yungchia Chen, hard work and self-discipline are second nature. It’s how he got where he wanted to be in life – every step of the way. The experienced choreographer now producing prolifically for the world’s stage was once an aspiring boy who was nearly rejected by a dance academy. Through adversities great and small, he never wavered. And it is with Shen Yun that he has found the greatest meaning in his work. Chen joined Shen Yun Performing Arts in 2007 – one year after the company was founded in New York. Within a few short years, Shen Yun has become recognised internationally as the premier classical Chinese dance and music company. Around the world, Shen Yun’s audiences have been captivated by the beauty of ancient China, and touched by the show’s message of hope.

new show. Chen has choreographed dozens of dances in classical, folk, and ethnic styles. His own story – which led him from China to Taiwan to the United States – is just as rich. Chen grew up in southern China, the youngest in an ethnic Hmong family of six. His whole family loved the arts, which kindled a lifelong passion for him. As a small 11-year-old, he auditioned for a professional dance academy, but the judges rejected him for his size. Yet one teacher, who noticed how quickly and accurately he learned the movements, argued for his acceptance. Chen never forgot the near-rejection, and vowed to work ten times harder than his peers. At graduation, he ranked first in his class. As he matured into an award-winning performer, choreographer and teacher, his career took him to the capital Beijing and then to Taiwan. In 2007, the New York-based New Tang Dynasty TV announced its inaugural International Classical Chinese Dance Competition.

would participate as a farewell to the stage. During the competition, Chen was discovered by Shen Yun and he quickly joined the company. What changed when you joined Shen Yun? Everything. Everything felt different at Shen Yun. Dance used to be the most important thing in my life. But now it’s faith. Being a part of Shen Yun has been a process of elevation for my body and soul. In trying to revive traditional culture, we have to comply with its values and thinking. Our ‘returning to the traditional’ can’t just be for show. The ancient Chinese had great faith and respect for the divine. As modern people, we have to change the way we think, and purify our minds bit by bit. Is this something you always believed? I realised these things after coming to Shen Yun. I started practicing the self-cultivation discipline Falun Dafa, and conducting myself according to its principles of truthfulness, compassion, and tolerance.

I now think and act very differently from before. I care less about fame and money and more about what my heart really wants. When problems occur, I can face them positively and use them to improve myself. How does this affect your art? Well, it’s not just me; it’s the same with this company’s artists in general. As cultivators, Shen Yun artists’ have different starting points and creative concepts – we seek to strengthen what is good and pure, and we use traditional elements in our choreography. Shen Yun is a world leader in terms of reviving traditional culture. That’s our mission, and the basis for everything we do. We want to send a message that gods exist, that what we do has consequences – good is rewarded and evil is punished, and that there’s hope for the future. What do you find most gratifying about your work? It’s that we’re showing the world authentic Chinese culture and the essence of our 5,000-year history. That’s why I’m so proud to be a part of this. When I think that my life’s work is helping to revive traditional Chinese culture for generations to come, I can’t be more satisfied.
