In this issue we not only pay homage to our past, we also celebrate our future.

Editor’s letter Welcome aboard our annual ‘Boat Show’ edition. We will get to the boats later, but first let’s talk about our feature interview with acting royalty, Dame Helen Mirren. This in-depth chat covers everything from her early years in the theatre to her latest role as Catherine the Great. It’s a revealing and fascinating insight into the career of one of the world’s most popular and prolific actors. Moving on from the queen of the screen to the kings of the road. We showcase three superstar cars in the motoring section … the Ferrari F8 Tributo, the Aston Martin DBS Superleggera and the McLaren 720S Spider. All showstoppers, all very sexy. Let’s keep the analogy going and highlight two stunning princesses of the sea. The first is our gorgeous cover ‘girl’, Tonic. With her brilliant peacock blue hull and state-of-the-art features, this unique Whitehaven Harbour Classic 40 is sure to turn heads whenever she hits the water. The second vessel to capture our attention was Sol Cazador, a luxurious 45-foot Hunter yacht that is available for charter with Gold Coast Sail. This is definitely sailing in style. We have been lucky enough to secure a 2.5 hour Broadwater cruise for 6 people aboard Sol Cazador as our competition prize for this issue so be sure to get your entries in.

Both boats are based in Sanctuary Cove, and in this edition we have included our annual 44-page Marine Village ‘mini mag’, highlighting many of the tenants that also call the picturesque precinct home. From fashion to food, beauty to businesses, you will find it all nestled within easy walking distance from the carpark. While The Marine Village welcomes locals and visitors to shop, dine and relax all year round, for four days every May, Sanctuary Cove also becomes the focus of one of the premium events on the marine industry calendar – the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show. This is always a very exciting time for us … It was at Boat Show back in 2007 that we launched the very first edition of Cove. Since then we have grown from a niche local publication to one of the premier lifestyle magazines in south East Queensland so in this issue we not only pay homage to our past, we also celebrate our future. Enjoy.

The British actor first came to international recognition via the small screen thanks to her role as DCI Jane Tennison in hugely popular series Prime Suspect. On the big screen, she has appeared in over 60 films and won an Oscar in 2007 for her portrayal as Queen Elizabeth II in The Queen. She has also won four Emmys including one in 2006 for TV mini-series Elizabeth I. WESTFIELD COOMERA, SHOP 1108 FOXWELL ROAD, COOMERA

Many people don’t know an awful lot about Catherine the Great … I think because history really doesn’t like very successful, very powerful women so they have to drag them down. And history tried to drag Catherine down. I hope we are going to re-instate her reputation as the incredible leader that she was. I’m not saying she didn’t have her faults. She made mistakes and finished up quite tyrannical but she was originally a reformer and a Westerniser, if you like, of this vast, vast country. What was your reaction when you were asked to play her? It was something you’d always wanted to do wasn’t it? Well no, I mean I made the mistake when I was doing an interview and someone said, ‘What would you like to do next?’ And I said, ‘Well, I’d quite like to play Catherine the Great, actually, that would be an interesting character.’ People heard that and the producers, David Thompson and Charlie Pattinson, went off and raised the money. Then they came back and I was like, ‘Oh no! That’s a terrible mistake.’ [laughs] But I was committed so I couldn’t sort of wriggle out of it. Why did you think it might be a mistake? I think I was nervous, I think I was frightened of it. I don’t know why, but I was. I’ve always been very wary of saying, ‘I would like to do this …’ because it’s a recipe for disaster really. It’s better to allow things to come randomly and brilliantly. Your first theatrical experiences were doing an end of the pier show in South End and an

32

amateur production of Hamlet – did that began your love affair with Shakespeare? Yes, and theatre in general. The show was called ‘Out of the Blue’ and I remember the dancing girls and I remember Terry Scott, the comedian, making me literally fall off my seat with laughter. It’s funny, actually, with you saying that. I just suddenly thought, that is kind of me in a nutshell. The sort of vulgarity, for want of a better word, of the end of the pier. And then the sort of intellectualism, if you like, the classical side anyway.

“Have confidence, have courage, go where others fear to tread, be bold, be brave, be beautiful in your soul – and be on time.” – Helen Mirren It was your English teacher in school who suggested that you join the National Youth Theatre? I didn’t even know that the Youth Theatre existed. We didn’t have a drama class at school, or a drama teacher or anything – well we had an elocution teacher – but we didn’t have a big drama thing going on like they do nowadays. She perceived my interest in drama and literature and she said, ‘You know there’s this organisation called the Youth Theatre and maybe we should apply for it.’ And I did – secretly. I secretly went off to audition. I didn’t tell anyone.

I must have told my parents to be able to go to London but I kept it the whole thing very secret. I was embarrassed at being turned down. But you weren’t, of course, and towards the end of your time there you played Cleopatra, which was a real breakthrough, because the Royal Shakespeare Company saw you and offered you a job? Well, not immediately. I went to the Manchester Royal Exchange for six months but they had kind of heard of me because the great thing about the Youth Theatre was you got reviews in the national papers. So the ‘Antony and Cleopatra’ had been reviewed and sort of spoken about in the papers and I think the RSC had kind of alerted themselves to my existence. How difficult was it adapting to screen work after being trained on the stage? I thought I was terrible, I have to say, for a long, long time. I thought I was just getting by, by the skin of my teeth, and I probably was, actually. It’s much easier for kids now because they all film themselves. They are used to being filmed, people grow up with their parents filming them. I didn’t know that so a camera was a terrifying thing to me. And it took me an awfully long time to get used to that. You know what? The thing that taught me how to work on film, wasn’t working on film, it was learning how to work with a film crew. The nature of a film crew, the dynamics of a film crew, what everybody does, how to treat people, how to work with all of them as well as with the camera, obviously. >>

FEATURE

So it wasn’t until I got Prime Suspect and I was working all day, every day, week after week after week, that I really came to understand what the dolly does, how important continuity is, how important hitting your mark is and all of those very, very important technical parts of filming. It’s not just to do with you. How easy was it to stay true to yourse lf – especially in the early stages of your career? As an actor you’re using yourself very much because what else have you got? You’ve only got yourself. I was lucky to be in the Youth Theatre and I think drama schools can be wonderful – I’m not dissing them – but I also think they are quite dangerous places because young actors can be manipulated, emotionally manipulated, quite easily. They are very, very vulnerable. And as a young actor it’s also dreadfully competitive world so you’re in a constant state of self-criticism and insecurity. I’m afraid that comes with the job. One of the things in the box of goodies that you open up as an actor, is a lot of insecurity and self-questioning. You did show great integrity in the roles you chose as a young actress … I don’t know if I chose them. I think they came my way. I was lucky in that sense. The only conscious choice I made was to leave what was a successful trajectory as an actress and going to work with Peter Brook for a year.

34

That was a conscious choice, rejecting a certain kind of success and going off to do work in obscurity and in very, very esoteric experimental theatre. Because I wanted to learn. And I have to say, that’s the other thing I think is the same for everyone in any job or in life in general, it’s a constant learning process and you always have to be open to learn and I still am. The people I learn from the most, I have to say, now are the young actors I work with. They are the ones I watch. They’re the ones I want to learn from. Starting out, what was your biggest challenge in this industry as a woman? My biggest challenge as a woman starting out was obviously the paucity of roles – and still is. It’s changed enormously. I’m very jealous of young actors coming into the world now because – for the women in particular – it’s so much better than it was. But it’s still kind of not very fair. Next time you watch television or go to the cinema, just count the number of men on the screen and then count the number of women you see. I used to sit with a piece of paper watching television with a pencil and every time I saw a man, didn’t matter what he was doing, I’d just put a mark – man, man, man, man, woman, man, man, man … [laughs] We’re 50 per cent of the population, why do I have to watch drama where I’m not there?

Where my sex is not there? Old, young, middleaged, whatever – why aren’t we there? And incidentally, until very, very recently there were very, very few black roles on television. So, thank god, times have changed but they haven’t gone far enough in my mind. Not yet. Finally, what’s the one thing you would tell yourself as a 21-year-old actress? At certain moments, it’s your right to say, ‘No, actually’. But just, be open, be open to experience. My advice for any actor is be on time and don’t be difficult. It’s very easy, especially when you’re young, you’re so full of yourself. This is the weird contradiction of being an actor, you have to have ego, you have to have a certain kind of self-confidence but at the same time that can lead you up the garden path and lead you into being an idiot. So, you have to sort of calibrate that. Somehow have confidence, have courage, go where others fear to tread, be bold, be brave, be beautiful in your soul – and be on time. [laughs]

ICONIC BRANDS

Omega and the moon It has a long and illustrious association with space, however, you certainly don’t have to travel as far as the moon to appreciate the enduring qualities of the Omega Speedmaster. WORDS SUSAN LANG-LEMCKERT

WHAT BETTER TIME to be talking about Omega than now – 50 years since two of the most famous Omega-wearers first set foot on the moon?

36

Or, more correctly, one of them – Neil Armstrong left his Omega in the lunar model before taking his historic steps on the moon, as the craft’s electronic timer had malfunctioned.

While the world-watched spacewalk on 21 July 1969 remains Omega’s best-known foray into space, it was by no means the first. In fact, it was five years earlier, in 1963, that astronaut Walter Schirra took the first Omega – his own Speedmaster CK2998 – into space on the Mercury-Atlas 8 mission.

And as the space race intensified in the latter part of the 20th century, Omega travelled with it into those previously unexplored realms. In 1964 it was time for NASA to source a watch they knew would reliably support their manned missions and could withstand the rigorous testing required to ensure the timepieces were up to the task.

So while it was Armstrong who took the famous small step for one man but a giant leap for mankind, it was Buzz Aldrin, a brand ambassador to this day, who first took Omega to the moon.

Even before this, the Speedmaster model had long been known as ‘the pilot’s choice’ – its strength, reliability and easy-to-read design making it the timepiece of choice of US Air Force personnel.

A number of esteemed manufacturers submitted their models, but only the Omega Speedmaster met all of the challenges, which included assessing the timepiece’s capacity to withstand extreme shock, vibration, heat and pressure. >>

Its unrivalled performance in these trials saw NASA engineer James Ragan name the Omega Speedmaster ‘Flight Qualified for all Manned Space Missions’ in 1965. “The watch was a back-up,” said Ragan. “If the astronauts lost the capability of talking to the ground, or the capability of their digital timers on the lunar surface, then the only thing they had to rely on was the Omega watch they had on their wrist. It needed to be there for them if they had a problem.” And, as we cited earlier, the Speedmaster could also double as the lunar model’s internal electronic timer, should the in-craft unit fail. The superior quality and versatility Omega demonstrated saw it become the sole provider of timepieces for NASA’s Human Space Flight Program. Later in 1969 the Apollo 11 team were honoured at an ‘Astronaut Appreciation Dinner’, where each was presented with a specially-crafted timepiece – the Speedmaster BA145.022 – Omega’s firstever commemorative model.

Fashioned from 18-carat gold with a rare burgundy-hued bezel, only 1,014 models were produced, each individually numbered. Numbers 1 and 2 are of particular historical note as they were gifted to US President Richard Nixon and Vice President Spiro Agnew respectively, but subsequently returned to Omega due to government gifting and benefits protocols. Model numbers 3 to 28 were given to serving NASA astronauts; 29 to 32 to watch industry leaders and politicians; and 33 to 1,000 were offered for public sale. And what about the other 14 pieces, you ask? Fittingly, numbers 1,001 to 1,008 were given to the astronauts on the later Apollo 14 and 17 space missions, with the remaining six being reserved for other notable personalities. In celebration of the auspicious 50th anniversary of the moon landing and Omega’s significant role in the same, the brand is releasing a commemorative Limited Edition Speedmaster – again numbering only 1,014 pieces.

While some of its internal and external features differ from those of the original Speedmaster BA145.022, the 2019 commemorative model strongly echoes the iconic style of its famous predecessor, and looks set to become equally collectable and sought-after. To complete the authenticity, even the 2019 model’s presentation box – which features 3D printing of the moon’s surface, including the Sea of Tranquillity and Apollo 11’s landing position – was inspired by the original Speedmaster BA145.022’s ‘moon crater’ packaging, which today is a highly-prized collectable in its own right. But this is by no means Omega’s only ‘moon’ watch, the lunar theme being evident in a suite of classic but contemporary Speedmaster designs, including the: • Apollo 17 Limited Edition • Dark side of the moon • Grey side of the moon • White side of the moon

• Moonphase • Moonwatch ‘first Omega in space’ • Apollo 11 45th anniversary Limited Edition • Moonwatch chronograph. Humankind’s eternal fascination with the moon and all things associated with it – its phases, the tides, its intrinsic relationship with romance – and, last but not least, the realisation of our collective dream to travel around and to it – would suggest the Omega Speedmaster moon watches will remain in vogue for the foreseeable future. That, and the fact that if you should ever find yourself on the surface of this glorious planet, the Omega Speedmaster is the only timepiece you’ll ever need, or want, to have with you.

LOOKING GOOD

Fifty and fabulous Want to look younger at 50? Take tips from Helena Christensen, Elizabeth Hurley and Elle Macpherson.

WORDS HILARY ROSE / HILARY ROSE / THE INTERVIEW PEOPLE

PICTURES ARE POPPING UP of stars in their fifties looking insanely great. Is the trick yoga and Botox, fresh air and lettuce or simply good genes? Until recently I had a bit of a soft spot for Helena Christensen. I interviewed her years ago and she was charming and clever and stunningly beautiful. Then she posted a picture of herself on Instagram, aged 50, wearing a swimming costume that failed in any way to protect her modesty. Instead, it revealed that she has the body of a 25-year-old. No lumps, no bumps, no back fat or wobbliness, just the firm curves she was famous for in her heyday. Frankly, this is neither helpful nor fair. I have no problem with other people being stunningly beautiful because there’s nothing I can do about it. I do, however, have a problem with women who are older than me having much, much better bodies. What’s she doing that I’m not? “The best cosmetic doctors can keep you in a state of aesthetic suspended animation,” says Alice Hart-Davis, the creator of thetweakmentsguide.com. “That’s why so many women in their fifties don’t look vastly different from their thirties. They started 15 years ago with subtle tweaks: occasional Botox, gentle fillers, intense pulsed-light treatments to clear age spots.” Every year around this time pictures start popping up of celebrities in their fifties looking insanely good half-naked. It’s not just Christensen, it’s also Elizabeth Hurley, 53 and blessed with breasts of a perkiness that is massively implausible and 100 per cent natural. How do her breasts stay up there like that? There are stunts you can pull when you’re fully dressed, but there’s nowhere to hide in a triangle bikini. Or look at Elle Macpherson. She has at least made a career out of having a great body, and if I were being nasty I might whisper that her knees are starting to look a bit rough around the edges, but still. The woman is 55. She looks incredible. >>

Jennifer Aniston, who has just turned 50, spends half her life in Mexico looking hot in a bikini of the utmost smallness. And I’ve never seen a more impressive sixpack on a woman than the one Jennifer Lopez revealed on Instagram recently. Lopez is 49. She has twins. “Fifty-plus celebs are doing the same workouts, but not as intensively as they used to,” says the London-based personal trainer Dalton Wong, who has worked with Jennifer Lawrence and Kit Harington. “You can’t train as hard, and you need to do more yoga and Pilates. “Recovery is so important for looking good at this age, so cryotherapy, infra-red saunas and deep-tissue treatments are much more a part of their routine. “But it’s just not possible to be in as good a shape at 50 as you were at 25.”

46

Look, I’m no chubster. I swim most days, I do weights and sit-ups. I eat reasonably well and I take care of my skin. I thought I was holding up pretty well, all things considered, but I sure as hell don’t have a body like Christensen’s, and even if I worked out all day I still wouldn’t. It is true that, in middle age, the supermodel may have started to exist on lettuce and fresh air, whereas I’m more fond of crumpets than is strictly wise, but she didn’t strike me as that type when I met her. Quite the contrary. She tucked into a threecourse meal with gusto and washed it down with plenty of wine. There’s no suggestion that Christensen has tweaked anything, but can all the above women simply be blessed with good genes? “There should be an open conversation,” Hart-Davis says.

“It’s hugely unhelpful for ‘normal’ women to think it really is down to being vegan and doing yoga.” And it’s not just the women. Let’s also objectify the semi-naked male body, in the form of Jude Law, 46, filming in white budgie-smugglers, and Orlando Bloom stark naked on his paddleboard, aged 42 and requiring more pixelation in a certain area of his anatomy than picture desks thought possible. Pierce Brosnan was photographed on a beach last month looking as sexy in his trunks aged 65 as he did in a tux 20 years ago. So please, all of you, put some clothes on. Stop body-shaming me by your very existence. And could somebody please toast me a crumpet?

CUISINE

Fusion of flavours Chef Sabir Merchant presents a unique Australasian-Indian menu at Kokum by Chef Mural.

WORDS & PHOTOGRAPHY MARJ OSBORNE

KOKUM BY CHEF MURAL, located on the Broadwater end of the glittering Palazzo Versace, is as remarkable as its luxurious host hotel, although it’s for a different reason: the restaurant serves sophisticated cuisine that honours the traditions of the sub-continent while infusing dishes with the tastes of other lands. Kokum is a collaboration between Saffron restaurant owner Sridhar Penumechu and Chef Manjunath Mural (Head Chef of Michelin-starred Song of India – the first Indian restaurant in South East Asia to be awarded a Michelin star - 2016, 2017, 2018). Defined as ‘Asian-Indian gastronomy’ (or in this case ‘Australasian-Indian’), Executive Chef Sabir Merchant follows Chef Mural’s mentorship, using traditional Indian preparation methods while transforming Indian dishes with the addition of native Australian and other Asian-Pacific (and even Mediterranean) flavours. For Chef Merchant, life began far from the luxe hotel where he now works. Growing up close to where Mahatma Gandhi was born, Sabir spent his childhood beside his mother in another far humbler kitchen, fed only milk until he was eight-years-old due to his family’s poverty. Sobering though this is, the palate of young Sabir was honed to remember flavour

110

combinations and textures that others would fail to notice. His childhood is honoured on Kokum’s menu by the presence of dishes such as the Gujarati dhokla heart for Valentine’s Day, a modern representation of the rice and lentil sponge his mother made on special occasions, and Murg Mussalam, a whole chicken with lamb mince in Kashmiri sauce, (this was the first meat he ever tasted in a family celebration to mark his father’s first business success). It’s a ‘lost dish’, he says, traditionally eaten as part of 21 courses for a wedding feast, with many of those flavours incorporated into the sauce. Obstacles turned into hurdles as Sabir finished school, a milestone leap as one of only 120 people across the country to gain an apprenticeship in the 5-star Taj Hotel group. During the next four years, he worked and studied tirelessly day and night, completing his apprenticeship, a Bachelor of Bus. Admin., Dip. of Hospitality and Cert. III in Culinary Arts concurrently while working. It was to be a time that marked out the rest of his life: education and hard work the means to a better life. Since arriving in Australia 12 years ago via Singapore, Chef Merchant has gained experience across the hospitality industry.

From cafés to fine dining, usually working two jobs at once to achieve a cross-fertilisation of ideas, he has gained a palate of world flavours. Like Kokum berries, many of our native ingredients on Chef Merchant’s menu have both unique flavours and medicinal properties of which many diners are unaware. Not only are they a fresh twist on Indian dishes, but so is their presentation, with Chef Merchant, an immigrant, serving our own food to us in a unique way. Over lunch we enjoyed a selection from the menu including: Pani puri, a popular street snack in India, is a semolina shell fried crisp then stuffed with a mixture of potato, onion, chickpeas and sweet tamarind chutney. Kokum’s signature version is stuffed with potato, sprouts and Kakadu plum, presented on top of a shot glass of sol kadhi, a digestive, detoxifying coconut milk and kokum drink, on this occasion to be poured into the pani puri before eating it whole, a texture-shelled flavour explosion. Sambal barramundi was never presented like this. The delicate sambal-marinated fish is cooked in the tandoor, strewn with turmeric yoghurt and charred silver beet across the top of a custom-made glass box displaying spices used in the dish.

Brisbane International & Domestic Tendrils of smoky spice seep out around the edges of the box, teasing our senses as we eat. Pomegranate prawns, again cooked in the tandoor, are served with a yoghurt pomegranate marinade, dotted with wakame salad and salmon roe laid down on a squid ink and roasted garlic sauce, mint sauce on the side, the dish a delicious example of eclectic world cuisine. With Shrimp Bhaji, Chef Merchant takes a much-loved Indian snack, the humble onion bhaji, and gives it a luxe Queensland twist with the addition of prawns, native samphire and a peanut chutney. Our main of Goat Biryani, using locally sourced meat, has been cooked in the traditional ‘dum’ style in a clay pot sealed by a pastry cover, the rice perfectly cooked and fragrant with rose water, whole spices, yoghurt and coriander. It’s served with a flambé lamb rack on turmeric mash with vegetables. We finish with a dessert assiette of beetroot Garam Pudding, a take on the famous Gajar ka halwa carrot dessert, and Gulab Jamun, a saffron cheesecake with pistachio crumb and chocolate mousse. Food philosophy is king at Kokum. While Chef Merchant stresses that ‘it’s important to know your roots’, he is not afraid to bring the flavours of different cultures into the crucible of his own kitchen, giving his own twist to their presentation and turning traditional Indian dishes on their head. Though we may look behind us to determine each dish’s origin, Kokum provides an unmissable modern dining experience. At a time when violent dissent is seemingly all around us, we can’t help but wonder … how much more understanding would we all gain if, as different cultures, we dined together, listening to one another’s stories around the table?

Food with a view La Vue Waterfront Restaurant offers diners a stylish, sophisticated experience.

NESTLED BY THE BRISBANE RIVER, La Vue Waterfront Restaurant offers sensational flavours, spectacular views and a warm, relaxed ambience. Owner and Head Chef Ronaldo, with his talented team of chefs, takes great pride in making diners feel welcome, always aiming to give them an experience to savour. “The philosophy here is communication and getting everybody to slow down,” he says. “Forget about technology and just relax.” An affable multi-tasker, Ronaldo’s plays the perfect host, engaging with customers as if they were old friends, and courteously attending to their every need. “I have seen so many people, such as husbands and wives, holding hands in this restaurant,” he explains.

112

“It might have been a long time since they have done that and that’s what is important to me.” La Vue Waterfront Restaurant boasts stunning uninterrupted views of the Story Bridge, but it is the food itself which is the real attraction. The kitchen focuses on Modern Australian cuisine with a strong French influence and an emphasis on sauces and finishes. Regularly updated and refreshed, the menu is always innovative and a showcase of fine produce and time-honoured preparation methods. However, while his food philosophy is based on French flavours, Ronaldo’s personal principles have a strong connection to Buddhism. “After travelling around the world, I decided that a religion that encouraged living harmoniously, respecting and caring for others appealed greatly to me,” he says.

“It is my belief that lost time cannot be retrieved, which is why I strive to give every customer a dining experience that is memorable.” The key elements of Chinese Feng Shui – water, wind and fire – have also been applied to the restaurant design. The dining area is facing the water, there is the fire in the kitchen, and at the centre is wind. The surrounding interior walls have beautiful paintings by Sylvia Meissner, an international and Australian artist who has showcased her works all over the world. Her pieces tap into ‘Colour Healing’ for positive chi energy, creating a relaxed and uplifting ambience for diners to experience. Open seven nights a week, La Vue’s international reputation has made it a signature choice for both tourists and locals.

SUBSCRIBE NOW Only $40* for one year (6 issues).

The restaurant also caters for special occasions, weddings and corporate events, with the experienced management team on hand to deliver beyond expectations. Fine food and a stylish, elegant ambience allow La Vue Waterfront Restaurant to stand out among others, however, it is Ronaldo’s welcoming approach that keeps diners coming back. “I am a humble person, living a humble and modest life,” he says “Money is not my priority. The important thing for me is to make people happy.”

Change of weather What impact is climate change having on our wines and what are growers doing to protect the industry? WORDS TONY HARPER

MARCH 2019 WAS, for Brisbane, the hottest on record, and it came on the heels of a baking, dry summer. As I write this in late April, autumn has hardly kicked in; I’m still wearing shorts to work (much to my wife’s annoyance); I’m still mowing the lawn twice a week and sweating my way through the ritual. No matter the agenda of naysayers, we are in the grip of climate change and its ramifications will touch on all aspects of our lives – the availability of bananas, the potential to grow Japanese maples north of the Victorian border, the slow but inexorably drift south of Irukandji jellyfish and saltwater crocs, mosquitos in July, and what shirt to wear on May 4th. And where farming is concerned the impact is already slapping things about. Winegrowing is farming with a single crop each year; there is small room for error. On the plus side, Australian winegrowers have been talking about climate change for years, and the best of them are changing what they do to give themselves a safety net and a future. I can’t help sympathising with the majority of the European producers – bound by tradition and law; less able to adapt and adopt. Think about Champagne – a region almost unyieldingly tied to one style of wine, and tightly glued to three grape varieties grown in a cold, marginal region. What will happen when that region is no longer cold and marginal? Will England become the new Champagne and Champagne the new Burgundy? Keep that thought going – Burgundy the new Rhone, Rhone the new Provence and Provence too hot to grow anything but lavender and heat-loving Spanish and Italian varieties. Perhaps. At least Australian producers are free to adapt and experiment with new varieties and clones, new rootstocks and new farming methods. Which is why we are seeing so much more Fiano, Vermentino, Tempranillo, Nero d’Avola and the rest of their motley crew; varieties proven to like warmth. With all of this tumbling around in my head, I asked two wonderful winemakers – from contrasting parts of the country – a few questions on their notions of climate change and how they are dealing with it.

116

Steve Flamsteed is Chief Winemaker at Giant Steps in the Yarra Valley: Ashley Ratcliff owns Ricca Terra Farms in the Riverland. So we have vastly different climates and a broad base of experience and opinion. ‘Do you’, I ask, ‘believe in climate change?’ Steve Flamsteed offers a succinct ‘Yes’, while Ashley Ratcliff goes into much greater detail, the pith of which is this ... “In the 16 years I have owned Ricca Terra Farms, issues such as droughts and limited supply of irrigations water has plagued our business. “As a kid and younger adult I can’t remember these environmental challenges being such ongoing issues. Greed combined with climate change is a cocktail for disaster. “I just wish the facts were transparent and not tainted by self-interest. While the facts remain muddy, and many farming communities get hotter and drier, it’s bloody hard to argue against climate change.” Better still are their answers to whether or not they have seen the influence of climate change on their respective vineyards (Steve – Yarra Valley. Ashley – Riverland). “Over the past 17 years I have been here we have seen the start of harvest come forward by about 10 days. That’s a little scary,” says Steve. “What is interesting is that commencement of flowering has also come forward by almost the same period – maintaining the average length of time between flowering and harvest of 100 days rule. Grapevines are resilient creatures of habit. “The picking windows are also getting compressed on an observation of averages – ie. date between starting Chardonnay in the central Yarra and Pinots way up in the altitude of Gladysdale seems to be coming closer together ...” From which we can glean that in this coolclimate area things are happening earlier in the season and vintage is becoming compressed: the gap is closing between valley floor and the higher vineyards. “One of the greatest tools Riverland grape growers have to mitigate extreme heat, which is a regular experience, is water,” explains Ashley. “This was clearly evident this year. In some instances, some other wine growing regions in South Australia struggled to manage the challenges of the extreme heat due to the lack of water.

“The prolonged heat did not match the availability of water. Fortunately for the Riverland there was adequate water, at a price. “This may change going forward. Without adequate rain in the catchment over winter there will be significant water restrictions, meaning the greatest tool for mitigating heatwaves will be in limited supply.” The Riverland, then, is kind of happy with heat. It is, after all, a hot, arid part of the country, and no stranger to viticulture. But it relies on water to make winegrowing possible. And right now we are seeing water from the Murray-Darling becoming a political football ... great. There are two reasons I thought of Ash Ratcliff for this wee project. The first, obviously, is that he grows wine grapes in a hot region. But the more important one is that he has made a significant move toward non-traditional varieties, and – in the process – has made the Riverland kind of sexy.

“On the other hand, for those wineries that buy our alternative grape varieties (we grow close to 400 tonnes … and increasing every year) it is all about wine quality and sustainability. “Unfortunately most of the Riverland growers, and other inland wine growing regions, have no option other than grow commodity crops. The leadership around creating a point of difference and making significant change only exists in small pockets. “The more consumers that demand these wines, and are willing to pay a fair price for these wines and to spread the word about what these wines stand for is the very start of a ground swell. Such a movement will increase demand. “As for the next 10 years, we will continue to plant more grapes varieties and challenge ourselves in growing our grapes in the most sustainable way possible. The key is dreaming how we can make change … then turning these dreams into reality.” For Steve Flamsteed the need for change is more reactive than proactive.

certain blocks getting a little too warm for Pinot Noir, or maybe the clones we planted back in the 90s?” says Steve. “We are having some early success with some warm north facing blocks being planted over to Rhone varieties like Grenache, Carignan and Mourvedre. “At the same time we are making more subtle changes in the vineyards, like row orientation (East-West in some cases rather than North-South), vine density and canopy management. All working towards a little more ‘dappled light’ shading. “My biggest immediate concern is more frequent summer heat spikes and, while vines are resilient, they don’t like spending too many days above 40 degrees. “So our canopy management has become more important than ever to prepare them for that. We have history to work from and being able to interpret the Yarra seasons is a viticultural skill that we are getting better at each year. You have to roll with the punches there.

His Ricca Terra wines are electric. And I reckon they point, in no small way, to the future of the area. “There seems to be a lack of interest in quality or sustainability by the wine companies that buy these grapes from us (Chardonnay, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot),” he says.

The Yarra Valley currently basks in its own glory; it produces some of the finest wines in the country, so change is done carefully, in baby steps. “As we replant blocks onto phylloxera resistant rootstock to safeguard for the future, we are addressing some fundamental stuff ... like are

“In 50 years? Well I have faith in the next generation being much smarter than the current set in their decisions so it will all be fine … right?”

WELL TRAVELLED

Japanese, please Japan’s eclectic mix of modern and traditional beckons travellers looking for flavour, fashion and family fun.

WORDS TONY HARPER

IT’S THIRTY-SOMETHING DEGREES in Brisbane and I’m off to the airport with my wife and kids, heading for somewhere much closer to zero: Japan, mid-winter. Before we make the plane we’ve run into a dozen familiar faces, all bound for Japan’s ski-slopes, and it’s little wonder – thick powder, six hours flight, no stifling humidity. But we are sight seeing elsewhere; Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka, with just a quick dash to the snow somewhere in the mix. Tokyo is a balls-up: we have a house booked in Harajuku that ends up as a fraud. So (and whatever gods look after travel were obviously watching) we get redirected to Shinjuku, and goodness ... don’t we land on our feet, trading a kind of posh, conservative, brand-toting shopping Mecca for something much more lively.

120

Shinjuku is the Tokyo equivalent of King’s Cross, Surfers Paradise, Times Square and Disneyland all rolled into one. But it’s deeply embedded with that wonderful gloss of Japanese civility. There are restaurants and nightclubs, bars, shops, alleys, and neon in equal measure. It almost sleeps. I rise early, even on holidays, so I slip out into the pre-dawn looking for coffee. There’s none to be found, but there are plenty of people (some newly risen, others ready for bed), restaurants still open from the night before, others getting ready for the day. I find a place serving natto (fermented soybeans) with raw egg and rice. Perfect. There’s a better breakfast waiting for me in Kyoto, but we’ll get to that.

You can find good coffee, but not before 8am (which suits my wife perfectly, me less). Blue Bottle Coffee (I reckon that’s an American chain ... San Francisco perhaps) has a place at Shinjuku Station, conveniently beside a Joel Robuchon bakery, that serves killer coffee. While in Tokyo we trek there daily. For my wife a good holiday is one that involves as much shopping as possible, covering as many stores as can be done in a day. In Tokyo, she is happy; there is anything and everything. I take the kids and leave her wandering the aisles. And, ironically, we find a shop. Disc Union Records spans a couple of floors in the most unlikely of buildings. It has an enormous collection of vinyl spanning at least five decades, new and second hand.

We leave with a handful each, wallets lighter, but not by much. I reckon my albums topped out at around $10 AUS; not bad. We visit a samurai museum (great fun); catch the Bullet Train to Yuzawa for some skiing; visit the fish markets; but most of all ... eat and drink. Somewhere in the heart of Shinjuku we stumble upon a nigiri/sashimi restaurant; there are thousands of them. But as we walk through the curtained doorway we smell, not fish, but the ocean. It’s extraordinary. And the food – so simple, so perfect – blows me away. The wasabi is grated from roots, the fish pared from slabs in front of us. And I set about a sake adventure while I’m at it. Then there’s a ramen restaurant close to our hotel that specialises in sardine-based broths, open (get this) 24 hours. >>

We ditch the kids for an hour and get busy slurping some of the best ramen I’ve ever tasted. A minute’s walk away is the Yona-Yona Bar, owned by the Yoho Brewing Company, one of Japan’s most progressive craft breweries. I drink my weight in Aooni IPA. The bullet trains (Shinkansen) are extraordinary, travelling upwards of 300 kilometres an hour. And it feels like you are travelling on a waterbed. To get to the snow and back (a mere 75 minutes to cover nearly 200 kilometres) we take one of the base models. But to get to Kyoto we take the Nozomi – a kind of super-speed bullet train that covers the 513 kilometre distance in a little over two hours, passing Mount Fuji on the way. It’s expensive, but a great way to travel; comfy, relaxing; you can buy beer, wine and snacks and watch Japan roll past. When we arrive in downtown Kyoto I am quite disappointed.

122

I had pictured something ancient and beautiful, but instead find just another city. Until, that is, we get to our house. It’s in the old district – cobbled streets, traditional buildings, Japanese maples, temples, people wandering the streets in traditional garb. It’s a city with a great deal of beauty, and once you leave the centre it’s like stepping into a Studio Ghibli movie. Our house – two floors, three bedrooms, two bathrooms – is extraordinary. The kids delight (and secretly, so do I) at the heated toilet seats and the bum-wash. But better is the beautifully managed mix of traditional Japanese accommodation with anglicised comforts. To find the place you leave the main road to travel a small one, turn into an alley, then turn again into the tiniest of streets. It overlooks a sea of century-old tiled roofs; forested hills in the background.

Kyoto is Wagu country – more particularly Kobe beef, and there are hundreds of restaurants selling the stuff. You can spend Donald Trump’s salary for a piece, or you can slide into less lofty restaurants and eat your fill for something like $20. Washed down, of course, with sake. There are also plenty of nigiri and sashimi restaurants, many of them tiny, many of them spectacularly good, many of them with Michelin ratings. And it can be very hard to get a seat. I left my heart in Kyoto, and I need to go back there and find it, hopefully soon. When I do, I’ll include Tokyo in the plans, so I can walk some different paths and unravel a tiny bit more of that wonderful city. But I suspect that Japan has so much more to offer – other cities, other towns, other glimpses into its ancient but rather marvellous culture.

AT THE WHEEL

Power & passion Ferrari F8 Tributo: a celebration of excellence and an homage to the most powerful Ferrari V8 engine ever.

FERRARI HAS REVEALED the first official photographs of the F8 Tributo, the new mid-rear engine sportscar that represents the highest expression of the company’s classic two-seater berlinetta. The name is an homage to both the model’s uncompromising layout and the engine that powers it – with a massive 720 cv and a record specific power output of 185 cv/l, it is the most powerful V8 in Prancing Horse history for a non-special car and sets the benchmark not just for turbos but for engines across the board.

124

The 3902 cc V8 won ‘Best Engine’ in the International Engine of the Year Awards in 2016, 2017 and 2018 and, in addition, was awarded the title of the best engine of the last two decades. As these prestigious awards demonstrate, in the automotive world, Ferrari’s V8 engine is seen as the very epitome of sportiness and driving pleasure. This is particularly the case when it is mid-rear-mounted in a two-seater. Ferrari has been honing the scope of abilities of this architecture, which creates an optimal weight balance, to perfection for over four decades.

The result is the F8 Tributo, which is one of the fastest, most thrilling and communicative supercars ever. The new car replaces the 488 GTB, with improvements across the board providing even better control on the limit along with greater on-board comfort. The F8 Tributo punches out 50 cv more than the car it replaces, is lighter and benefits from a 10 per cent improvement in aerodynamic efficiency along with the latest version of the Side Slip Angle Control, now in 6.1 guise.

So while the F8 Tributo offers the highest levels of performance of any car in the current range, that performance is also very useable. The F8 Tributo delivers its 720 cv without the slightest hint of turbo lag and produces an evocative soundtrack. Instantaneous power is matched by exceptional handling thanks to advanced vehicle dynamics solutions. These include a new version of the Ferrari Dynamic Enhancer (FDE+) which can be activated in the manettino’s RACE position for the first time, a move designed to make performance on the limit easier to reach and control for an even greater number of drivers. The steering wheel rim is also smaller in diameter to enhance the level of tactility and make the car feel even more agile. In addition, weight reduction measures have cut the car’s dry weight by 40 kg compared to the 488 GTB, further enhancing both responsiveness and driving pleasure without impinging on interior comfort. State-of-the-art aerodynamic solutions incorporated into the car’s body help ensure that the extraordinarily powerful engine can be fully exploited.

As with the 488 Pista, the F8 Tributo’s aero package is directly evolved from the track and it adopts several features designed to help manage engine heat, including, for instance, the rearwardangled front radiators and the dynamic engine air intakes positioned either side of the spoiler instead of on the rear flanks. Designed by the Ferrari Styling Centre, the F8 Tributo is essentially a bridge to a new design language that will continue to emphasise Ferrari’s key characteristics of high performance and extreme aerodynamic efficiency.

The new Lexan rear screen showcases the engine compartment and also brings a modern twist to the most distinctive design element from Ferrari’s most famous VS, the F40. The louvres help extract hot air from the engine compartment without impacting the efficiency of the blown spoiler which has been further evolved to increase downforce generated at the rear. The spoiler wraps around the tail lights, visually lowering the car’s centre of gravity and allowing a return to the classic twin light cluster and body-coloured tail, another signature of the

The front of the car is characterised by the S-Duct, a solution that made its debut on the 488 Pista, but which has been redesigned to suit the extensive modifications made to this area of the car. The result is that the S-Duct alone contributes an impressive 15 per cent to the overall increase in downforce compared to the 488 GTB. The new, more compact, horizontal LED headlights allowed Ferrari’s aerodynamicists to incorporate new brake cooling intakes in combination with those on the outside of the bumper, the aim being to improve air flow throughout the entire wheelarch and thereby avoid having to increase the size of the braking system to cope with the car’s greater speed.

early 8-cylinder berlinettas like the very first in the legendary series, the 1975 308 GTB. The cabin retains the classic, driveroriented cockpit look typical of Ferrari’s midrearengined berlinettas, but every element of the dash, door panels and tunnel, has been completely redesigned. The new generation HMI (Human Machine Interface), complete with round air vents, new steering wheel and controls as well as a new 7” passenger touchscreen display, significantly enhance the on-board environment for driver and passenger.

Production perfection DBS Superleggera – the ultimate production Aston Martin.

AT ASTON MARTIN, DBS has long signified the utmost in elegance and speed, comfort and performance. The new DBS Superleggera is a meticulously handcrafted Grand Tourer with beauty and performance in equal measure. No fraction is compromised. Unquestionably, DBS Superleggera sits at the pinnacle of the Aston Martin production range. It is both a shining light expressing the most beautiful automotive art and, at the same time, a dark and menacing shadow of brutal, unequivocal strength.

126

This fine blend of seemingly opposing traits makes the DBS Superleggera the absolute Aston Martin. There’s genuine engineering purpose behind the splitters, side sills and Aeroblade II™ that goes far beyond their muscle-bound appearance. The 715bhp provided by the DBS Superleggera 5.2 V12 twin-turbo engine is a colossal figure by any standard. But that is just where its talent starts. When you drive the DBS Superleggera you get to savour something else even more phenomenal – its torque.

Torque is as difficult to explain as it is easy to experience: it is the power of the punch you feel when a car accelerates, and the DBS has 900Nm of it, more than any Aston Martin road car in the company’s history. Crafted with the same precision and attention to detail as all their cars, they have designed a new Aston Martin Accessories Collection exclusively for DBS Superleggera owners. Offering luxurious enhancements, the range of accessories provide an additional level of individuality and personalisation to the owner experience.

Ferociously fast The 720S Spider embodies McLaren’s relentless quest to push the limits of possibility. LIGHTER, STRONGER, FASTER. The McLaren 720S Spider embodies all of these and more. But how it makes you feel is altogether something else. Prepare to push the limits of what you thought possible in a supercar. The 720S Spider drives without compromise to its Coupe counterpart. With track-defeating power ready to be unleashed, the McLaren 720S Spider offers an open-air driving experience that’s every bit as exhilarating as the Coupe, coupled with supreme ride comfort you can enjoy every day. And one of the quickest, quietest retractable hard tops in the world. The contours of the 720S Spider are distinctly McLaren, yet the details are boldly different. The designers took inspiration from the Great White Shark, a beautifully sleek yet brutally efficient hunting machine.

The smooth flow of the exterior lines manipulates onrushing air to reduce drag and cool the engine Slim pillars on the teardrop-shaped cabin allow for the extraordinary glass canopy that floods the interior with daylight and offers unrivalled all round visibility. The McLaren 720S Spider is also ferociously fast, it devours the road with a ravenous appetite. Welcome aboard Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show keeps crowds coming back for more.

FOR FOUR DAYS EACH YEAR Sanctuary Cove becomes a boating wonderland for upwards of 45,000 people. From marine industry powerbrokers and passionate boaties to social butterflies and young families, the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show (SCIBS) continues to attract huge crowds to what is one of the highlights of the Gold Coast events calendar. “We always love seeing new faces but one of the things we are most proud of is how many people keep coming back for more each year,” says SCIBS General Manager Johan Hasser, who will oversee the 31st edition of the mega event from 23-26 May 2019.

130

“Some people come to buy a boat or explore the pavilions. Others prefer to wine and dine with friends or watch their children have fun in the Kids’ Zone, and the best part for us is how many head home with a smile on their face. “A huge amount of effort goes into ensuring SCIBS has something for everyone and it’s going to be no different in 2019.” Considered the Southern Hemisphere’s premier marine event, SCIBS celebrates all that is great about the boating lifestyle by bringing together more than 300 exhibitors and hosting multiple world and national launches. Boat lovers can step aboard an incredible onwater array of luxury motor yachts, catamarans

and sailing boats, while the ‘Sports, Leisure and Fishing Boat’ precinct offers 20,000sqm of outdoor space dedicated entirely to trailerable boats and a huge array of the industry’s latest gear and gadgets. The beauty of SCIBS is that just as much action happens away from the water including an abundance of bars and restaurants, live music and family-themed entertainment. One of the hottest tickets across the four days is the VIP Lounge, presented by InterContinental Hayman Island Resort, where marine industry powerbrokers, VIPs and guests are treated to a five-star offering of food and beverages while enjoying a bird’s eye view of the boat show.

Paul Burt’s live cooking demonstrations also prove hugely popular, with the boating and fishing identity showing guests how to turn their catch into cuisine at home or on a camp kitchen. SCIBS 2019 will also see the Channel 7 presenter film an edition of his all-new Step Outside program in front of a live audience at the Anaconda Main Stage. “This is just another example of how we are continually providing SCIBS visitors with new experiences,” Johan says. “Whether you come to the boat show every year or are walking in for the first time, the wow factor will inevitably remain the same.” For more information and tickets, visit

The perfect tonic Featured on the cover of this edition is Tonic, the stunning new Whitehaven Harbour Classic 40.

THE FIRST of Whitehaven’s Harbour Classic 40 will take the mantle as the showstopper at this year’s Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show. Decidedly retro with a modern twist, the Harbour Classic 40, christened Tonic, boasts a brilliant peacock blue hull, which its designers say ‘conveys the spontaneous, fun, playful character’ of the model. This entirely new offering represents a more genteel boating occasion – picnic style for daytime with the added benefit of dual cabins for overnight stays – the perfect balance that will suit denizens of Sydney Harbour, Port Phillip Bay, the Gold Coast Broadwater or the Whitsundays. Combining the aesthetic and timeless appeal of a gentleman’s cruiser with the benefits of

132

high-tech design and impeccable Euro-style features, the Harbour Classic 40 is a compact, supremely luxurious 40ft dayboat that invites easy, breezy and sophisticated days on the water, with all the comforts of home. The original concept with her strong hull lines was created by highly respected New Zealand marine designer and qualified yacht builder, Bill Upfold. Australian naval architect, Misha Merzliakov has re-imagined her and created something truly scintillating that will stimulate the senses and arouse the sentiments in avid boaties craving a change of pace. Inspired by the allure of the North-east American lobster boats and the sport boats

of the French Riviera and Italian Lakes, yet endowed with Australian practicalities for our climate, the Harbour Classic 40 comprises the Whitehaven hallmarks of superior engineering, luxury entertaining amenity and customisation. Suited to its purpose as the quintessential entertainer’s boat, the aft deck is perfectly planned for languorous lunches at tranquil anchorages, with nothing more taxing than deciding which wine accompanies the seafood spread and which soundtrack best suits your mood. Taking into account the Australian climate, owners have the option of a solid extended roof for shade, a shorter version to let the sunshine in, or a retractable sunshade for the best of both worlds.

QUALITY CUSTOM SHUTTERS & BLINDS YEARS

The aft deck flows seamlessly into the roomy saloon and lounge for an optimal social setup. The relaxed and inviting dual cabin arrangements convey the intimacy of this style of boating, where the owners’ priority is no-fuss cruising and quality time onboard to entertain, while also offering a comfortable place to rest ‘sunshine weary’ heads. LED lighting enhances the mood and the impeccable joinery evokes the elegance and craftsmanship of yesteryear with a contemporary edge in the patina and finish. Like every Whitehaven, the Harbour Classic 40 can be highly customised, inspiring owners to bring to life their own one-of-kind vessel – testament to their unique boating journey.

FACTS & FIGURES

Team effort Sam Guo and Julia Kuo are integral members of the Ray White Broadbeach sales team.

WORDS RHONDA OXNAM

SAM GUO AND JULIA KUO are two of the bright young stars on the Gold Coast real estate scene. Now integral members of the Ray White Broadbeach sales team, the dynamic pair began their careers in different fields before moving into the property industry. “After leaving high school, I worked at an Agricultural Cooperative Bank in Kaohsiung, Taiwan for 15 years before migrating to Australia in 2000,” explains Julia. “I met my current partner in 2003 and it was he that introduced me to real estate.” “I was born in China and came to Australia to study my Master Degrees in 2002,” adds Sam. “I have always worked in marketing and after finishing my degree I was employed by a local tourism company for a year. “Then one of my friends suggested I should be a sales agent so I took her advice and started my real estate career path.” Although it is a very challenging time for the industry in general both Sam and Julia believe the Gold Coast is faring better than the major capitals

134

of Sydney and Melbourne, citing the influence of international buyers and a reasonably strong local market as the defining factors. “Besides local demand, the Gold Coast property market is subject to interstate and international buyers which often affects the fluctuation in price,” says Julia. “In recent years, the Gold Coast property market has been boosted by Chinese buyers from China and Melbourne but this has dropped off since November last year. “Coupled with a downturn in property prices in Sydney and Melbourne, the Gold Coast property prices have softened, however, unlike Sydney and Melbourne, there is still local demand and interest from interstate buyers that are leaving Sydney and Melbourne. “With the election this year and a projected 1.6 per cent growth in GDP, property prices will remain relatively flat into the future,” she says. “The lifestyle, climate and value for money are all positives for the Gold Coast property market,” says Sam.

“There is such a lot to offer, it’s easy to drive around, it’s only minutes to the beach, shops, schools etc and we get an average of 300 sunny days a year, making it ideal for all outdoor activities. “And compared to lots of capital cities, the Gold Coast provides great value for properties, that’s the reason we attract buyers from the Southern states.” So what are the major factors affecting the market now and into the future? “Interest rates, foreign buyers and the economy are the main factors affecting the market now and also into the future,” says Sam. “We have experienced the boom from 2004, the crash in 2009, the recovery in 2013 and the current downturn,” explains Julia. “But we are confident that we will continue to provide the best advice and service to our clients on the Gold Coast and keep on selling.”

20/20 vision Euroglass Australia – leaders in frameless glass for over three decades. TO BE SUCCESSFUL in any business for 30 years takes vision, dedication and a little bit of luck, as Euroglass Australia owners, Peter and Jane Condon, have discovered. The couple started a small one-man shower screen business on the Gold Coast in 1989. However, this was not just a regular shower screen business, their ‘frameless’ glass products were something different. “No one had really heard of frameless shower screens in those days let alone showered in one,” explains Peter. “I got the idea from a Kiwi friend, Robert, who I met in Europe in 1982. He had been selling and installing frameless shower screens in Auckland for a couple of years and they had started to become popular, so he talked me into giving them a try.” The frameless shower screen design came to Robert from a manufacturer in Geneva who invented the square patch frameless shower screen hinge which he subsequently imported from Switzerland. Hence the name Euroglass. Having decided to take a punt on the innovative new product, Peter and Jane sold their family home in Brisbane and, after paying back the mortgage, used the meagre leftover money to fund the start-up.

136

Born on the Gold Coast, Peter felt comfortable going back there to establish Euroglass so he moved his wife and new family to an Ashmore rental with two babies under two-years-old and set up in the two-car garage with a second-hand ute from the public auctions. He didn’t even have a mobile phone for about three years as they were new, big and expensive. Of course, things always start slowly and sometimes there were weeks between enquiries. “My very first customer was a wonderful interior designer from Southport called Robert Henderson Design,” recalls Peter. “He was very creative and innovative with an upmarket loyal customer base and many good referrals. He got Euroglass off the mark.” It took about three years to gain any real traction and for Peter and Jane to believe that the business might have a sustainable future. Peter’s younger brother Chris came on board and helped enormously with the heavy lifting which allowed Peter to do more marketing, designing and quoting to build up the business. Within five years, Euroglass was installing frameless shower screens and mirrors for some prominent local Gold Coast identities including Keith Williams, Michael Edgley, Jack the Slasher and Michael Hill.

Enquiries started coming from bathroom outlets in Brisbane, as well as the ones on the Gold Coast, so another two employees were added to the team. “Finding employees who had the eye for precision and detail was very difficult in the early years,” says Peter. “No-one else was offering frameless showerscreens in the marketplace and there was not a pool of experienced workers to choose from. “We had to train every new worker up from scratch, because when people were paying significant money for a frameless showerscreen, they demanded perfection.” Significant work was coming from Brisbane, with a team driving to jobs there nearly every day, so the decision was made to move the business to Brisbane, while still servicing loyal Gold Coast customers. Frameless glass pool fences were added to the range around 10 years later. These really took off as people realised the benefits of having a fully open transparent feel to a beautifully landscaped garden and pool area. Ironically, these initially proved more popular on the Gold Coast than in Brisbane. Euroglass had always operated from a home garage but once the pool fences became a

success, it was obvious it was time to lease a factory for daily glass deliveries. “The first premises we rented were in Morningside where we stayed for 10 years,” says Peter. “This was all before the advent of Google, websites, emails and smartphones and customers used to like to touch and feel the product by visiting the showroom in those days.” Around 2000, soon after moving into the factory, Euroglass introduced frameless glass balustrades. These took a little longer to gain traction but when they did, they added a whole new scope to the packaged range of products that Euroglass could offer an up-spec residential project. Overall sales in the early 2000s prompted Peter to investigate the possibilities of setting up a glass processing factory to produce safety glass, predominately for Euroglass’s own requirements. After several years of R&D, Peter found an ideal location in Hemmant, halfway between the Gateway bridge and the Port of Brisbane. It gave excellent access to all facilities and Peter had a new purpose-built factory constructed to accommodate all the necessary glass processing machinery. “After two years of building and machinery installations, the glass production facility opened on 15 October 2005,” Peter says proudly. “Initially it was a simple operation with only five staff and most of the machinery was manually operated or semi-auto. “In 2010, the processing factory operation was sectioned off into its own separate entity called 1st Glass Australia and today 1st Glass has 22 staff and some 300 customers apart from Euroglass.” Ever innovative, in the past 10 years Euroglass has branched out into many other peripheral glass areas such as pool windows and sliding and stacking door systems. They have also ventured into small commercial projects and completed frameless glass installations in many hotels including Royal Pines Resort, Sofitel Brisbane, Four Points at Sheraton Brisbane, Brisbane Square redevelopment, Pullman/Ibis at Brisbane airport and Novotel South Brisbane. However, Euroglass remains true to its core beginnings in always advancing innovations in residential frameless glass applications.

CANCER 22 Jun – 23 Jul

The next two months are turning points. Energetic Mars in your sign in June will motivate you to change the face of your daily life. You may begin a fresh work schedule or will decide that your health or that of someone close must come first. The total solar eclipse on July 3rd signals a fresh start, so consider where in life you would like to revitalise your circumstances.

PISCES 20 Feb – 20 Mar

LEO 24 Jul – 23 Aug

SAGITTARIUS 23 Nov – 22 Dec

The next two months will involve considerable change in your personal life, any many Archers may adopt a fresh approach to financial matters as well. The full moon on June 17th will spotlight your true feelings about someone; perhaps even about yourself; and the eclipses in July signal a fresh phase in a relationship. Singles should mingle: you may meet a nurturing soul.

ARIES 21 Mar – 20 Apr

You’ll enjoy a reunion or the chance to relive an aspect of your past in June. Socially, life will change: if you’ve been quiet socially, expect a busier time; and vice versa. You may discover a talent or love for a creative activity that sparks your imagination. You’ll feel inclined to follow a more nurturing daily routine in July and throughout the rest of the year.

TAURUS 21 Apr – 21 May

AQUARIUS 21 Jan – 19 Feb

GEMINI 22 May – 21 Jun

You are passionate and emotional and so it’s easy to lose sight of facts. And yet you are also discerning, especially about your loyalties. Consider how best to boost relationships with those close to you. Your values may change; and so will your finances. Your long-term decisions will affect both your personal life and your finances, so ensure you are well-informed.

Venus and the sun at the zenith of your chart in June spell a busy time at work; you are likely to wish to be chattier and more outgoing and will enjoy the chance to bring more varied aspects into your daily life. You may enjoy an inspiring holiday or a trip. If you are looking for romance, this is the time to look for it: you may meet someone you are truly fated to be with.

Take a while to consider how best to provide both yourself and someone close with more nurturance as this will be the key to progress. Get set for a new phase at work or in your daily routine. Some Capricorns may experience key changes in a relationship, especially if you were born early to mid-January. Singles should mingle: you may meet a match over the next few weeks.

The next two months will revolve around how you feel about broadening your horizons; how you feel about someone close; and how you feel you could better serve your needs and those of your family. A lot of feelings! And yet you’re a rational person, so ensure you are analytical too: July’s eclipses will open doors for you at work and at home. Be ready to step through.
