Awe-Inspiring Wonders from Around the World
If you are lucky enough to live in this beautiful part of the country, don’t miss our very special ‘luxury living’ feature.
Editor’s letter THANKS TO THE WONDERS of modern technology I’m writing this letter on a bus somewhere between Madrid and Barcelona where I’m spending a three-month European sabbatical. While I’m thoroughly enjoying discovering new countries and cultures, I must admit that putting this edition together is making me quite homesick. Everything from the gorgeous cover featuring Australian-born international model, Charlie Robertson, at The Fantauzzo, Brisbane to our new-look Top Table dining pages showcasing some of the region’s best restaurants reminds me of sunny south-east Queensland. If you are lucky enough to live in this beautiful part of the country, don’t miss our very special ‘luxury living’ feature. Spanning 20 pages, this section focuses on everything you need to make your house a home – beautiful furniture, stunning outdoor settings, elegant décor items, luxe fittings and designer accessories. And if you are looking to buy, build or invest in real estate, be sure to check out the expanded Property Portfolio, which covers the market from the Gold Coast to Brisbane and beyond.
We have a very interesting main story for you as well as we take a behind the scenes look at the musical blockbuster, Rocketman. Directed by Dexter Fletcher and starring Taron Egerton as popular singer/songwriter Elton John, this film is both creative and confronting. As Sir Elton himself says: “A movie about my life was never going to be able to be a straightforward biopic. It needed to be fantastical and theatrical, while at the same time being truthful. I wanted it to be completely honest and tell my story, warts and all.” We also preview the upcoming OutdoorX event at Sanctuary Cove, bring you the latest looks from this year’s Mercedes-Benz Fashion Festival Brisbane and round-up the best SUVs on the road. Finally, no matter where I am in the world, one of my favourite things to do is relax by the pool with a cool drink and a good book. If this is also your ideal pastime, be sure to get your entries in for our latest competition where one reader will win a stylish Coco Republic outdoor sunlounge valued at $3,295. Good luck and hasta luego.

WORDS DAN CAIRNS / THE SUNDAY TIMES / THE INTERVIEW PEOPLE
AUGUST 25, 1970: LAUREL CANYON, CALIFORNIA. Elton John, his co-writer Bernie Taupin and his manager (and lover) John Reid are attending a party at the home of Mama Cass following Elton’s debut show on American soil, the first of six nights at the Troubadour, West Hollywood. The residency is something of a gamble for the singer’s British record label, which is beginning to have doubts about him as a performer, no matter how good his songs are. Something alchemical occurs that night. Almost out of nowhere, the man who will soon become synonymous with outrageous costumes and incendiary live shows first makes his presence felt. It was, says film director Dexter Fletcher, ‘a life-changing moment’. OCTOBER 17, 2018: A BOGGY WOOD IN BUCKINGHAMSHIRE. An open-top Cadillac sweeps up the drive to the Mamas and the Papas singer’s house — or, rather, the version of it that a team of set builders have erected in the English countryside. Fletcher, his cast and crew are shooting a scene for Rocketman, a film that tells Elton’s story from childhood to rehab, and a project all involved in are at pains to point out is nothing like Bohemian Rhapsody (though they’d love similar box-office takings, which are now approaching the $1bn mark), and is certainly not a biopic. “It’s a musical experience,” says Jamie Bell, who plays Taupin opposite Taron Egerton’s Elton. “It’s absolutely not a by-numbers biopic.” Recreating an LA summer in sodden, autumnal Bucks is a bit of a stretch, but that’s what the editing suite is for. Period pieces litter the set: a Beetle, a Mustang, a beach buggy, a Corvette. Extras mill about, all beads, kaftans, hot pants and flares. Inside the house are a sitar, a vintage fridge and a turntable, LPs strewn across the frayed Persian and hessian rugs, and, on the wall, a poster for a Caravaggio exhibition at an American museum. One of Fletcher’s earliest acting roles was in Derek Jarman’s 1986 film about the artist. So that was deliberate, right? “Well spotted,” the director chuckles. “Yes — a little dig from the art department. It took me a while to notice it.” Fletcher was brought in to complete Bohemian Rhapsody when its original director, Bryan Singer, was fired. You get the sense — maybe it’s the way his face tightens and his voice rises when the subject comes up — that he might have made a completely different (and better) film had he been there from the start. He’s certainly in the driving seat on Rocketman, among whose producers are Sir Elton and his husband, David Furnish. >>

On the day when we met up again at Abbey Road Studios for a chat, and the screening of 15 minutes of footage, a news story had run claiming that a scene showing Elton and Reid (played by Richard Madden) in bed together, their ‘bare bottoms on view’, may be cut to nab the film a prized PG-13 rating in the US. Fletcher neither denies nor concedes that there is nudity in his film, but he is bullish on the question of who gets to decide on the final cut. “Sorry, I’m the director,” he says. “It’s my film. I haven’t been restricted by anyone or anything. “Obviously, I get notes from producers, and we all have a vested interest in getting the film seen by as many people as possible. “But in terms of control, I’m making the film I wanted to make, and I’m responsible to the audience. [Paramount] green-lit this film, they saw the script. It’s pure speculation.” In other words, if cinemagoers see bare buttocks, that news story was mere mischief-making.
30
Sir Elton himself is crystal-clear about what he wanted the film to achieve. “A movie about my life was never going to be able to be a straightforward biopic,” he says. “It needed to be fantastical and theatrical, while at the same time being truthful. I wanted it to be completely honest and tell my story, warts and all.” Rocketman opens in 1990, as the singer enters rehab for multiple addictions. Fletcher’s masterstroke is to use this as the film’s framing device, with Elton looking back over his life and career. “That whole era had a wild, fantastical feeling to it,” the singer says, “and that bold and flamboyant energy is something we knew we needed the actors and director to bring to the screen.” The recollections of a broken man, hanging together by a thread, become a springboard for the songs. “An unreliable narrator of his own story,” is Fletcher’s description of Elton at this point in his life. And very grateful he is for the haziness of that recall.
“It’s a brilliant storytelling device and it gives us the freedom to treat it as fantasy,” the director says. “And we’ve all done that with stories about our past — where we’re either lying to ourselves or lying to other people.” We watch Elton resisting his therapist’s inquiries or weaving off into make-believe and denial. “So you see him saying, ‘Oh, my dad was always hugging me, it was so embarrassing’,” Fletcher continues. “Then we see the dad doing the absolute opposite.” “At another point, the therapist says, ‘Let’s talk about your childhood’. Elton goes, ‘There’s nothing to tell’. And young Elton is suddenly there, and leads him back to the streets of Pinner.” Fletcher uses this freedom to launch endless flights of fancy: Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting soundtracks a vast dance routine in a fairground; The Bitch Is Back accompanies those childhood memories in Pinner; Rocket Man scores a scene set at the bottom of a swimming pool. >>

Chronology is wayward — in an early meeting with his label, Elton’s run-through of song snippets includes I Guess That’s Why They Call It the Blues, a good ten years before it was written. And there is the occasional blunder. A Yamaha grand piano in the Duke’s Hall at the Royal Academy of Music, in 1958? Really? Another Yamaha grand appears in the Troubadour show, which may or may not be a coincidence. Singing these newly recorded versions of the songs — rearranged, often radically, by Giles Martin, whose extensive work on the Beatles catalogue will have prepared him for handling a songbook as illustrious as Elton’s — are Egerton and, in the case of Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Bell. Egerton had covered Elton’s 1983 hit I’m Still Standing in the animated musical film Sing, but he was a bundle of nerves, he says, when it came to voicing a dozen or more of his songs. The singer was quick to advise him. “He said to me very early on, ‘Stop trying to sound like me’. So it was more about capturing his spirit than doing a carbon copy.” Martin, who coached Egerton for 18 months, was on high alert for anything resembling imitation.
32
“I remember saying to Taron, ‘You sound like a cassette copy of a cassette copy. You need to sound like you do in the film’. It absolutely couldn’t be, ‘Tonight, Matthew, I’m going to be Elton John’. Stuff like that got knocked out immediately.” At the core of the film are Elton’s relationships with Taupin and Reid, both of them unlikely and, in the case of Reid, a bomb waiting to explode. A working-class radio plugger from Paisley, Reid — who now lives a quiet life in Australia — powered Elton’s career with a mix of cunning, bravado, genius and chicanery. “He was,” Madden says with more than a hint of admiration, “an absolute monster.” Fresh off Bodyguard (what a relief it is to see him do more than just mutter ‘Ma’am’), the Scottish actor took to the new role with relish. “Some people said he was the nicest guy, and others went, ‘He’s the nastiest person I’ve ever met.’ That gives you a huge amount of scope.” Taupin, Bell says, was in the thick of the action in the early part of Elton’s career, with a ringside view of the carnage. “He’s front and centre, at every gig, on the plane. Elton doesn’t have the best self-esteem, he’s in a room going, ‘I don’t know who I am’. So I think Bernie helped him navigate that.”
“Warts and all,” Elton commanded. It’s not as if there’s a shortage of material. Back to Madden for a choice example of life when the drink and the drugs have driven you insane. “Elton was staying at, I think, the Four Seasons in LA, and really kicking off, complaining about the noise. The manager goes, ‘I’m sorry, sir, but it’s the wind’. “And Elton says, ‘Well, f****** do something about it’.” That’s a film right there.

Optimal health Women’s health expert offers a contemporary approach to wellbeing. CONTEMPORARY MEDICINE and wellbeing requires a preventative, multi-faceted approach. Rather than simply reacting to symptoms as they occur, Dr Luze’ Jewaskiewitz and the team at Elite Med Family Medical Centre treat patients holistically, offering a variety of assessments and treatments to ensure optimum health. “Once I get to know a patient and their history, we can work together to identify any health risks and make changes to help prevent these risks becoming a reality,” Dr Luze’ said. “We can also treat medical conditions using a combination of traditional medicine, allied health services and lifestyle changes.”
With a special interest in women’s health, Dr Luze’ offers bio-identical hormone treatments to combat flushes, fatigue, mood swings, low libido, pelvic pain, weight gain and general symptoms associated with menopause. “Bio-identical hormones are different from traditional hormone replacement therapy (HRT) as they are produced from plant estrogens and are identical to the hormones our bodies produce,” Dr Luze’ said. “It’s a very specific form of hormone treatment, in that I have the prescription compounded to exact specifications. “It’s a much better outcome for patients and does not come with the cancer risks often associated with traditional HRT.” Dr Luze’ said the bio-identical hormone treatments have produced exceptional results for her patients, freeing them from a variety of menopausal symptoms. “It is wonderful to see the changes in patient’s lives using these treatments. “The symptoms of menopause can really take over a person’s life, and often in cases where there is a history of cancer in the family, doctors will not prescribe HRT, so the patient feels like they have no options available to them. “Bio-identical hormone treatments don’t carry the same cancer risks as traditional HRT, and therefore we can prescribe them for patients with a cancer history, or a fear of the cancer risks.
“I work with the patient to tailor the treatment and get it exactly right for them,” Dr Luze’ said. Elite Med also of fers an exceptional antenatal service. “I have my own ultrasound machine, and have been trained in its use, so I can do many of the required scans here in the clinic, without the patient having to go to additional appointments,” Dr Luze’ said. “The ultrasound is also very useful in putting my patients’ minds at ease when they are worried that everything is ok with the baby. We can do ultrasound scans that aren’t scheduled, in order to ease patient’s worries.” Cosmetic injectables is also an area of special interest for Dr Luze’. Undergoing these procedures in a professional medical setting offers patients a safe and expert environment, as well as Dr Luze’s years of experience and knowledge. Elite Med’s holistic, preventive approach of fers ex tensive allied health ser vices including dietician, physiotherapy, psychology, a diabetes educator, exercise physiologist and chiropractor. This allows patients the benefit of a variety of treatments available under one roof, with health professionals working together for better outcomes.

Have you had your implants checked? BREAST IMPLANT CHECKS WITH LEADING PLASTIC AND RECONSTRUCTIVE SURGEON DR DILIP GAHANKARI Most women who have undergone breast enlargement surgery view it as one of the most positive steps they have taken for their own wellbeing and condence. However, breast implants are not a ‘set and forget’ surgery. It is a general recommendation that all breast implants should be monitored regularly. Dr Dilip’s Implant Check Consultations offer a thorough check of your implants, no matter where or when your surgery took place. Your Implant Check Consultation will identify common issues which can arise with implants such as capsular contracture, Breast ImplantAssociated (BIA) ALCL, implant malpositioning, rippling, post-surgical scarring and symptoms commonly associated with presumed Breast Implant Illness. If necessary, a follow up plan will be outlined. With over two decades of experience, Dr Gahankari is a skilled surgeon with a commitment to the highest standards of surgical techniques and quality patient care. Patients will have no out of pocket fees for their consults with appropriate referral from their GP. This page is an advertisement. This information contained is not a substitute for independent medical advice. This information is not intended to be used to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. Dr Dilip Gahankari makes every effort to ensure the quality of the information. Before relying on the information, users should carefully evaluate its accuracy and relevance for their purposes, and should obtain appropriate professional advice.
Issues which may arise with implants include: CAPSULAR CONTRACTURE – an often painful condition where the body reacts to the implant
by forming scar tissue around it, often causing the implant to harden or x into place, restraining natural movement and creating an unnatural or even disgured contour.
IMPLANT MALPOSITION – a distorted looking breast as a result of the implant being positioned
incorrectly behind the breast. (Too high placement results in a bulge in the upper breast and a downward turned nipple; too low placement makes the upper breast appear at with an upward pointing nipple).
BREAST IMPLANT-ASSOCIATED (BIA) ALCL is a rare lymphoma associated with breast implants, most commonly textured breast implants. The Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons reports that the risk for textured implants is around 10 times higher (1 in 4’000 to 1 in 7’000) compared with implants with lower surface area texture (1 in 60’000). Generally, the occurrence of BIA ALCL is low, between 1/1000 and 1/10,000, however early detection is essential for effective treatment. Other issues include rippling, post-surgical scarring, pain in the breast area, general illness and symptoms commonly associated with presumed Breast Implant Illness.

THERE ARE FEW FOODS as rich and satisfying as good cheese. Whether you delight in a decadent dish at one of our top-drawer restaurants or offer a cheese board with grapes at a barbecue, it’s worth including ingredients fresh from our local producers and suppliers. Here’s our showcase of some of the region’s best cheese producers, restaurants and dishes. WITCHES CHASE CHEESE, NTH TAMBORINE Founded in 2004, Witches Chase cheese comes from one carefully controlled dairy: Scenic Rim 4Real Milk, where cows are milked in a robotic system without human handling. Buy a triple cream blue, goats feta, clothbound cheddar and tamembert (their version of Camembert) to enjoy at the venue or to take home to share with friends. NIMBIN VALLEY DAIRY, NIMBIN On the winding road out of Nimbin lies sustainably-run Nimbin Valley Dairy owned by Kerry and Paul Wilson, (who also own Byron Bay Cheese Co). It’s a paddock to plate philosophy dairy farm with around 100 free-ranging goats and 80 cows producing cheese free of chemicals, hormones, antibiotics and genetically modified ingredients.
52
KAT HARVEY, CHEESEMAKER, NIMBIN VALLEY DAIRY A chef by trade, Kat ‘begged’ Kerry and Paul to take her on as an apprentice cheesemaker. Two years later, Kat has a popup stall in James Street, Burleigh from 2pm Fridays to Sundays selling several of the cheeses she’s made at Nimbin Valley Dairy: Byron Bay Nashua, Nimbin washed goat, St Billie and Byron Bay Tintenbar. TOWRI SHEEP CHEESERY, ALLENVIEW A sheep farmer’s daughter, Carolyn Davidson started Towri Sheep Cheese in 2004 using small vat production. Sheep milk has high nutritional value, calcium and vitamins, good fats and because it’s naturally homogenised it’s much easier for lactose intolerant people to digest. Popular Towri cheeses are the Creamy Blue Ewe and Eweghurt. TWEED VALLEY WHEY, BURINGBAR Tweed Valley Whey is an artisan dairy owned by the Harnett and Clarke families. The Harnett farm has been a milk supplier to Norco for the past 100 years. Late in 2018 they opened their cheese factory to the public selling single origin cheeses and yoghurt.
BYRON BAY MOZZARELLA CO., BYRON BAY Founded in 2004, Byron Bay Mozzarella Co is 100 per cent Australian owned by the cheese maker and chef Luca and Ryan, aided by consultant cheese masters Valerio and Andrea. Using local milk from happy cows, they produce fresh cheese embodying Italian family culture, such as buffalo mozzarella, bocconcini, fior di latte, scamorza, stracchino, burrata, ricotta and their best-selling haloumi. CASA MOTTA, MANSFIELD “I stretch by hand my buffalo mozzarella, the traditional Italian way, using only Queensland buffalo milk. That’s why my buffalo mozzarella is tastier and fresher than any industrial or imported ones,” says Italian-born cheesemaker Alessandro Motta. Not only does he produce buffalo mozzarella, burrata and fior di latte for some of Brisbane’s best restaurants and delicatessans, he’s also intent on educating Australians about the cheese culture of his birthplace. PANDELYSSI, HOLLAND PARK Paying homage to the outdoor lifestyle, these premises Patrick Kekkou and his son Anthony, a third-generation cheesemaker, churn out some of Brisbane’s best haloumi, fetta and ricotta in their Holland Park premises.

They wholesale their cheese to restaurants and delicatessens as well as selling direct to the public. FRESCO, BURLEIGH HEADS Specialising in Italian and Greek cheeses, Fresco is the Gold Coast’s longest-standing cheese manufacturer, founded over 30 years ago. Fresco’s award-winning feta, haloumi, bocconcini and baked ricotta are widely available in many local supermarkets in Queensland. OLYMPUS CHEESE FACTORY, COORPAROO Using traditional Cypriot recipes, time-honoured traditional methods blended with the Australian style of using non-animal rennet on cow’s milk or buffalo milk, Brisbane’s family-owned cheese manufacturer Olympus has been producing a range of award-winning Mediterranean cheeses since the 1970s: cow’s milk and buffalo milk fetta, ricotta and halloumi as well as natural and Greek-style yoghurt. MELT BROTHERS, BRISBANE CBD This single product restaurant is dedicated to bringing you the best cheese toastie ever. Turn down Gresham Lane in Brisbane’s CBD to find Melt Brothers. You can order a traditional cheese toastie, or devour a combo such as M.C. Cheesy, complete with Mac ‘n’ cheese, maple bacon, smokey BBQ sauce, mozzarella, cheddar and aioli sauce. Of course, delicious varieties such as mozzarella, burrata and gruyère feature heavily on many restaurant menus so we’ve tracked down eight of the region’s best cheese dishes. Burrata, made in Apulia, Italy, is one of the world’s most exquisite cheeses. As its delicate shell of mozzarella is broken, the burrata’s filling of stracciatella and cream oozes out. You’ll find the best burrata dishes at Baritalia, Fellini and Lupo. Labart also serves Stracciatella with fig, cucumber and basil. There is no other cheese sandwich on the coast to rival The North Room’s very adult delight: the Gruyère Toastie. Thankfully we’re not the only fans, so that it will be on the menu for some time to come. Potato gnocchi with gorgonzola sauce, eaten in Rome on Thursdays as the saying goes, can be found at Lupo. It’s a richly decadent dish. Fried jamon and mozzarella balls feature in the menus of Bin 232 Bar & Dining and Bin 72. Ham and cheese balls were never quite like this. Why eat potatoes when you can dine on Haloumi chips, say the owners of Zeus Street Greek. Newly arrived to Harbour Town Eats, Zeus Street Greek features haloumi on several of its dishes. It’s the return of the retro at The Kitchen at The Collective with a whole wheel of Mt. Tamborine creamy brie baked with honey and maple, served with berries, walnuts, and garlic croutes. Pizze Bianche, often topped with ricotta and either mozzarella or provolone cheese instead of a tomato topping, is a specialty of Balboa Italian, where you have a choice of seven toppings. Flaming parmesan wheel is a regular Wednesday night event at Salt Meats Cheese. Four-cheese casarecce pasta is added to the melting brandyflamed parmesan cheese, before being served with parsley and cracked black pepper. It’s a dramatic meal preparation. This dish is also featured at Il Verde, Bowen Hills and Salt Meats Cheese, Newstead. Undoubtedly, you can probably add your own favourites to this list but it is certainly a good starting point for south-east Queensland cheeselovers.

Distillery garden Kangaroo Island Spirits has launched Koala 48, a gin boasting four-dozen homegrown botanicals including juniper berries, which is an Australian first. Due to climate conditions, the majority of juniper used in the traditional distillation of gin in Australia is sourced from Europe. However, Sarah and Jon Lark, who established the nation’s first dedicated gin distillery at Cygnet River in 2002, planted their first common juniper trees about five years ago and now have around 150 trees of four different varieties which are featured in the limited release Koala 48 and will also be used for special batches of their flagship ‘O’ and ‘Wild’ gins.

escapes with minimal travel time. Being based on the Gold Coast, we were looking for a getaway that was a little different, a chance to brush the sand off our feet and explore a small part of nearby Brisbane. Nestled in the highly regarded fashion and lifestyle precinct of James Street, The Calile Hotel offers everything you need for a relaxing break with some of Brisbane’s best shopping right on your doorstep. Subtropical in style, enduring in nature, The Calile is a resort sanctuary embedded into a vibrant urban streetscape. Authentic and effortless, it celebrates Brisbane’s climate, character and relaxed love for the outdoors to create a hotel experience that
Our entry into the Hotel was as impressive as the pictures, full of beautiful pastels, light filled spaces and that feeling of anticipation as you realise some time for relaxation and a little fun awaits. The Hotel facilities are all easily accessible from the communal areas – a trip to the gym, library, wellness spa, restaurant or bar are only steps away. We could have spent hours on the balcony of our room, bathing in the sun, but a cabana was calling so we made our way to the pool to tick off the relaxation part of the trip. These huge serviced cabanas are magnificent, with heating or cooling to keep you comfortable at any time of the year.
Grab a book from the library then soak up the atmosphere – and maybe a cheeky cocktail or two – around the pool. I may or may not have lazed away a couple of hours doing just that. Kailo Wellness Medispa offers the per fect balance of indulgence with amazing spa body rituals and beauty treatments through to personalised procedures led by experienced cosmetic physician Dr Edwina Morgan. Warming and nourishing, the Spiced Chai Body Wrap Ritual was particularly to my liking, the perfect pick me up for the skin during our cooler months. If you’ve enjoyed the authentic Greek cuisine at Hellenika Nobbys Beach you won’t be disappointed at The Calile.

LUXURY L I V I N G LUXURY – noun – a state of great comfort or elegance; living – noun – the pursuit of a lifestyle of the specified type. Therefore, luxury living is about designing a welcoming space that reflects your taste, your way of life and your aspirations. But there’s more to it than pure indulgence, small can be just as beautiful through the inclusion of thoughtful fittings and furniture. Be sure to focus on what makes you happy – beautiful artworks, stylish décor items, signature statement pieces and pops of colour. It may be something as simple as hanging a luxe light-fitting above your dining table or
a more dramatic decision such as retiling the bathroom. Whether you employ an interior designer or trust you own instincts, the most important consideration is that your home reflects your personality. For example, if you tend to spend a lot of time outside, an elegant outdoor setting and a lush collection of plants can create a peaceful garden haven. Or a floor to ceiling bookshelf and a comfy chair may appeal to an avid reader. The real key to luxe living is not size or expense, it’s creating a private sanctuary that is stylish, warm and relaxing.

Built in luxury Take your home to the next level with Porter Davis Homes.
WHEN DESIGNING YOUR DREAM HOME knowing what to feature in different areas, while they might seem like small items, can make a huge difference. Porter Davis Homes World of Style Queensland Lead Interior Designer, Janelle Miles, has all the tips and tricks on what to focus on when designing your luxurious abode. “Impress your neighbor’s right from the moment they step into your home with your entry way,” says Janelle. “Walking through an impressive double door into the entry foyer with a raised ceiling can create a sense of space. Partner this with timber flooring laid in herringbone or chevron pattern to achieve a lavish look. “If you have a double storey home be sure to highlight your staircase with stained and polished treads, especially if it is visible from the entry way.
“A void over the staircase works hand in hand with the higher ceilings and can be beautifully complemented by a pendant light.” The kitchen is known as being the heart of the home and the place where the family comes together. Give it a touch of luxury with marble or stone for your island and kitchen benchtops, and try continuing the same stone across the kitchen splash back, framing with returns to give a seamless spatial transition. “Using a thicker stone for the island bench with a shadowline can create the illusion of a floating benchtop,” suggests Janelle. “Extending the length of the benchtop too can not only give your kitchen an elegant edge but will also provide practical solutions, giving you extra space in the kitchen to prepare meals with the family.”
Bathrooms are one of the areas you can have the most fun in. Opting for a freestanding bath with gold tapware is an easy way to give your bathroom an elegant touch. Decorative mirrors can also be a stylish addition and can really express your personal style. “Balance is key – if you feel you have focused on using simple fixtures, try and complement them with one or two feature items. For example, using a natural stone mosaic wall tile can be a great way to inject some texture into your bathroom,” Janelle says. Using luxurious décor elements to express your personality through interior design is not to be forgotten. Changing a simple tile from a subway to herringbone lay and using a large format polished or lapparto floor tile can give your home an edge that you didn’t know it needed.
“You can also add pendant lights throughout the home to give a touch of sophistication and really bring out your chosen style, whether that is more traditional or contemporary. Choose to feature the same pendant light through living and dining spaces with a different and more understated pendant featured in the bathrooms.” – Janelle Miles, Porter Davis Homes World of Style Queensland Lead Interior Designer.

Introducing Diarama Exclusive to ace stone + tiles.
A CUTTING-EDGE distributor of fine stone and exclusive tile products, ace stone + tiles source the highest quality natural materials from around the globe. Stocking the most diverse selection Queensland has to offer, ace stone + tiles are proud to introduce the stunning new Diarama range. Diarama comes from the desire of creating a collection characterised by a wide range of chromatic shades, that come to light spontaneously and randomly by stratifying colours, as it happens in paintings. “I didn’t want the upper surface to simply appear colored, but mixed, as if it were an oil painting,” explains designer Hella Jongerius. “It’s a study about pure colour, applied on different ceramic basis like a second skin.”
The collection is composed by various glazed chromatic references, applied on seven different matt coloured clay bases. Each reference comes from the application of the same glaze on the top of the several coloured bases, which react in an unpredictable way and create a fan of ever inherit nuances, distinguished in two macro-groups called Light and Dark. These are complemented by Diarama Black and White, where the glaze applied on the seven bases is respectively black, Iron, or white, Chalk. Combined together, they create the black & white combination: Dusk. Diarama Mix overturns this principle. Different coloured glazes are applied on the same black or grey base, creating Black Chroma and Grey Chroma. Depending on the combination between body and glaze, the result will always be singular.
In the middle of the tile, a matt stripe of coloured clay creates a contrast with the polished surface. Diarama measures 9.4cm x 18.7cm and is available in a range of colours. Contact ace stone + tiles for further information and to view this range.
“I’ve used the tiles as canvas, to see how different bodies of colored clay reacted when a glaze was applied on top of them. But I started wondering: what kind of product should this become? Then I got a call from Mutina. I think I was waiting for that call, it was well-timed. It was the right moment and the right company.” – Hella Jongerius

On the increase According to recent property research, Brisbane is the capital that’s due for a rise. WORDS NICK NICHOLS
NOT ALL PROPERTY MARKETS are created equal and, if the figures are any guide, neither are the downturns. While there was welcome news from researcher CoreLogic of a mid-year easing in the property slowdown, it also showed that for some markets the downturn has been a non-event. Taking a 12-month view, there was a 7.3 per cent fall in dwelling values nationally in the year to the end of May. Hobart, Adelaide and Canberra were the only capitals to see price growth. However, Brisbane could also be viewed as bucking the national trend. While prices eased, they did so at less than a third of the national rate of decline, and most of that occurred in the subdued quarter ahead of the federal election. Either way, Hobart, Adelaide, Canberra and Brisbane were the only capitals to outperform the national price decrease. According to CoreLogic, Brisbane’s dwelling values have increased just 8 per cent, or almost half the 14 per cent growth of the combined capitals over the past five years. By comparison, Melbourne and Sydney were up 23.5 per cent and 19.4 per cent respectively. It explains why CoreLogic’s Housing Affordability report revealed Brisbane as one of the most affordable capital city property markets.
80
With continued interstate migration driving the property market in Queensland’s south-east, analysts have started talking up Brisbane’s prospects. “As far as property markets go in 2019, it’s fair to say we’ve been less dramatic than our southern cousins – but in a good way,” says Herron Todd White (HTW) in its Month in Review report for June. “Brisbane is the due-for-a-rise capital city that may yet have its time in the spotlight, but the first half of this year has been more conservative than progressive.” According to HTW, the downturn in Brisbane has been so soft that it didn’t come close to giving property owners ‘the jitters’. While there is a growing consensus that the broader market could be shaping up for a recovery, the main hurdle is the tight lending environment. CoreLogic’s head of research Tim Lawless says the market appears more positive than it had been prior to the federal election, and despite some easing of lending rules and a reduction in interest rates, availability of credit looms as an ongoing issue. “Comprehensive credit reporting is providing lenders with greater visibility around borrower finances and overall debt levels, and progressively lenders are reducing their exposure to borrowers with high debt levels relative to their income,” says Mr Lawless.
While the top end has edged lower in Brisbane, HTW notes this sector may be defying the credit crunch. HTW says properties priced under $2 million were most affected by tighter credit. Properties priced above $3 million proved more resilient, most likely because they were less reliant on bank finance and negative sentiment. In trend terms, HTW positions the Brisbane housing market at the start of the recovery phase. With apartment oversupply concerns easing, it says this sector is at the bottom of the cycle, indicating that both houses and units could be heading for gains. HTW is not shying away from the fundamentals that continue to drive the Brisbane market, and south-east Queensland generally. “While many of our metrics have looked promising for growth at the start of this year, forces pulled in the other direction too,” HTW says in its mid-year analysis of the Brisbane market. “We are affordable in comparison to southern capitals – so the draw for borderless investors and lifestyle nomads is strong. “You only need to check out Queensland’s rising net interstate migration numbers to appreciate what’s going on.”

SUV roundup The OUTDOORX show at Sanctuary Cove begs the question – which luxury SUV would you like to take on your next off-road adventure? WORDS CHRIS NIXON
OFF-ROADING used to be about clattery old Toyotas, but now even the most prestigious makes have adapted their ranges to include at least one SUV. Paradoxically, the SUV boom seems less about off-roading than the appeal of perceived prestige and general utility.
And it’s ironic that while we can’t get enough of these over-size wagons with off-road capability we’ll never need, the motoring world is on the brink of switching on to compact, battery-powered vehicles without a skerrick of adventurous flair in their hi-tech cells. But if it’s luxury SUVs we want, here are a few ideas.
LAMBORGHINI URUS PROMISED SUVs from Ferrari and Aston Martin have yet to arrive, so for now the Lamborghini Urus must be the craziest thing on four wheels. Lamborghini sports cars are outlandish and uncompromising, so this is the chance to own one of these Italian exotics in a friendlier package. Instead of the trademark V10 or V12 engines, the Urus employs the brand’s first V8 – turbocharged – which is borrowed from sister brand Audi. Eight is enough to drive the Urus to a mind-boggling 305 kmh. Priced from $390,000.
ROLLS-ROYCE CULLINAN LAWRENCE of Arabia used Rolls-Royces so the company’s recently-released Cullinan is perhaps not so incongruous as a ship of the desert. Plenty of sceptics awaited the Cullinan’s arrival, but it has proved to be an authentic Rolls capable of taking a sheikh, maharajah or doddery old duke virtually anywhere in supreme comfort. It’s got a massive V12 engine, acres of premium wood and leather and road presence like nothing else. Prices start from just less than $700,000.

MASERATI LEVANTE BEFORE you rush into saying a sports car and racing icon like Maserati couldn’t make a decent SUV, I can confirm it has. Like many high-end makes, Maserati has forsaken its traditional positioning to tap hungry SUV demand. In fact, the Maserati Levante is both a sports machine and an SUV. These days, minutely-metered traction, transmission, steering and braking systems controlled by many computers capably do the job of clambering over broken ground almost as well as an old-fashioned Landy with high clearance, low gearing and chunky tyres. Back on the highway, the Levante’s speed and handling dynamics are impressively sporty. The Levante will perform in sublime comfort too, for it is no less luxurious than its sedan, coupe and roadster siblings. Buyers enjoy an almost limitless choice of paint and upholstery colours, custom seat stitching, fascia trim and accessories. Maserati introduced cheaper Levantes last year – a $125,000 entry version and $15,000 off the prices of the GranLusso and GranSport, to $144,990 – but an indulgent customer could easily soak up the savings by shopping the options list. Italian leather seats? Levante offers silk upholstery – yes, truly – woven by Ermenegildo Zegna. Among the overwhelming number of ‘cookie-cutter’ SUVs, the Levante offers truly Italian-flavoured style and sportiness. Its 3.0 litre, twin-turbo V6 petrol engine is built by Ferrari and in base form produces 257 kilowatts of power and 500 Newtonmetres of torque. Driving the wheels through an eight-speed automatic, it’s good for a claimed 0-100 kmh sprint in 6.0 seconds and 250 kmh top speed. That’s impressive for a wagon weighing 2.1 tonnes. And while it’s bulky, it feels satisfying nimble on the move, as should a Maserati in any form. Air-spring suspension is tied down well, aided by the maker’s long-serving Skyhooks automatically-adjustable shock absorber system. Select the Sport driving mode, invoking racier responses from the throttle, steering and Skyhooks dampers plus a lower ride height, and the Levante rips through fast bends as tenaciously as a … well, a Maserati. Electronic dynamic and traction aids abound. These not only ensure secure roadholding but also apportion the rear-biased all-wheel drive according to available grip. The so-called Q4 Intelligent All-Wheel-Drive includes a rear limited-slip differential for optimum traction. Off-road it will handle modest creeks and sharp grades with surprising ease, should you dare to risk scraping the Maserati’s elegant flanks on the undergrowth. Adaptive cruise control, blind-spot alert, rear camera with a dynamic grid guide and parking sensors front and rear are part of the standard package. Keyless operation of the doors also is standard, along with auto-dipping mirrors and a powered tailgate. >>

BENTLEY BENTAYGA WHEN under shared ownership, Bentley and Rolls-Royce cars used to be almost identical. Now with different owners (Volkswagen and BMW, respectively), they’re positioned differently and the $334,700 entry-level Bentayga is roughly half the price of the Rolls-Royce Cullinan. But you don’t get only half the value – the Bentayga is still hand-finished, sumptuous, imposing and powerful.
BMW X6 STRIVING for a niche among luxury SUVs, BMW gives us the fastback X6. Love or hate its unusual styling, the X6 coupe-SUV has been a popular seller in Australia, offering some of the best off-roader handling dynamics with two diesel engines priced from $119,900 and a petrol V8 M version at $198,000. An all-new, third-generation X6 is due later this year.
RANGE ROVER NO round-up of luxury SUVs is complete without the one that pioneered the concept, the Range Rover. Through several generations since 1970, it’s remained royally elegant, supremely luxurious, unstoppably capable and the benchmark for newcomers in the category. Her Majesty might order ‘one with the lot’ for $400,000, but we’d be happy with the V8 Autobiography priced at only $268,528.

Racing history Aston Martin, McLaren and Ferrari take centre stage at the 2019 Goodwood Festival of Speed.
IN 2019, Aston Martin celebrates two significant anniversaries – 60 years since its iconic 1-2 win at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and 70 years since the company first raced at the Goodwood Motor Circuit. It was fitting then that the Central Feature at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed was a 30-metre-high swoop of steel with the Le Mans winning Aston Martin DBR1 racing towards the sky on a never-ending race track. To complement the Central Feature, the luxury brand’s bespoke personalisation service – ‘Q by Aston Martin’ – designed six unique Vantages, each honouring a famous race car from the company’s long and prestigious history. Vantage was an obvious starting point for the project as Aston Martin’s modern race car. Aston Martin will only make 60 ‘Vantage Heritage Racing Editions’ with customers able to choose one of the six liveries. The collection introduces a new aero kit adding a massive 194kg of downforce at 190mph. The oldest racing car to provide inspiration for the series is Razor Blade, ‘The Record Breaker’ who set two class records in the 1500CC light car class at Brooklands in 1923.
100
To create the design, ‘Q by Aston Martin’ colour matched the green to be the exact same pantone of the original chassis, while the silver acknowledges the aluminum streamlined body constructed by aircraft manufacturer De Havilland. The Italian Progettista’ pays homage to Aston Martin’s most iconic pre-war racing model, the Ulster. An Ulster finished third overall at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1935, winning its class and placing fourth in the RAC Tourist Trophy Race. The red of the bodywork perfectly matches the original team colour scheme and the ‘Aston Martin’ lettering on the side gill nods to the distinctive script that was hand painted on the bonnets of the team cars. The DB3S has inspired the ’The David Brown Era’ Vantage. The yellow and green DB3S has become one of the most iconic liveries making it the perfect choice for the project. Also celebrated at Goodwood was AMR1, ‘The Group C Monster’. The Nimrod successor was developed in 1989 to participate in the Group C racing series and bristled with radical new technology including
a kevlar/carbon-fibre monocoque chassis – a radical development at the time. A nod to the endurance racing series that Aston Martin has been competing in since 1928 is ‘The Le Mans Winner’ Vantage. The DBR9 was Aston Martin’s challenge to the GT class, winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans in both 2007 and 2008 making it back to back class wins for Aston Martin. Finally, the collection concludes with the ‘The Next Generation’ which honours the modern racing Vantage GTE. Inspired by Aston Martin’s current offering to the world of motorsport, ‘Q by Aston Martin’ matched the Lime Essence and Stirling Green colour displayed on the body panels of the official race car, replicating the racer that currently competes in the world’s toughest endurance series – the FIA World Endurance Championship. A nod to Aston Martin’s long-standing relationship with racing and its commitment to both beauty and speed, each of the six Vantages were displayed under the Central Feature at Goodwood Festival of Speed for every day of the festival.
Bold, brave, innovative and enduringly proud to be different, McLaren was also capturing attention at this year’s festival. The impressive line-up included the new McLaren GT, the McLaren Speedtail and the Full-Scale LEGO® McLaren Senna. The new McLaren GT reimagines the Grand Tourer – making the established traditions obsolete through pioneering McLaren design and engineering. Elegant, beautiful and superlight, the new McLaren GT is tailor-made for epic journeys in modern luxury. Engineered with continent-crossing capability, this model is destined to deliver an engaging yet comfortable ride. A car like no other and a pure fusion of science and art in automotive form, the Speedtail is McLaren’s first ever Hyper-GT and the brand’s most aerodynamically efficient car ever. T h e f a s te s t M c L a re n to d ate, with a pione e r ing 1050 PS hy br id powertrain at its core, it brings together unprecedented levels of innovation and elegance to create a new benchmark in automotive design.
30 model builders. 5,000 hours. 468,000 bricks. Weighing nearly 1,700kg. The Full-Scale LEGO® McLaren Senna was a Festival showstopper. Replicating McLaren’s latest LEGO® Speed Champions set this fully interactive build of McLaren’s most extreme track-focused car with working sound, lights, the ability to control the engine and the chance to sit in a real McLaren Senna seat captured the attention of fans both young and old. Car enthusiasts have always come to expect something special from Ferrari at the annual Goodwood Festival of Speed. Once again, their expectations were rewarded, as Ferrari brought some very enticing treats. The Prancing Horse stole the limelight when it presented to the public – for the first time – the P80/C and the SP3JC, the Maranello marque’s latest Special Project cars. Both beauties dazzled spectators with their performance in the Supercar Runs up the famed Goodwood hill climb. Goodwood fans also enjoyed an additional Ferrari first with the dynamic debut of the Monza SP2.
Part of the new ‘Icona’ range, the Monza is inspired by barchettas of the 1950s – cars driven to victory in international motor sport not just by official Scuderia drivers, but also by gentlemen drivers who, in those years, frequently found themselves wheel to wheel with legendary professional drivers of the era. For lovers of classic cars, there was eye candy a plenty with every decade represented. Among the ‘golden oldies’ were a 166 MM Barchetta (from 1950), a 250 MM (1953), a 250 GT SWB/C (1961) and a 250 GTO (1962). Seven Ferrari F1 cars made appearances at Goodwood in the ‘Michael Schumachercar 50’ tribute session, along with four other Ferrari F1 cars in other sessions. Aside from the one-offs and the Formula One racers, the Prancing Horse brought the FXX-K Evo and models from the current road car range to Goodwood. As a special treat, a 488 Challenge car – the same as those being used in the new Ferrari Challenge UK series – also participated.

FACTS & FIGURES
Well educated Your daughter’s future is important. Give her the best start in life. WHY CHOOSE A GIRLS’ SCHOOL? “As parents, we want the best for our children. And as a mother of a daughter, I know how important it is to raise our girls with the confidence to be and do whatever they want,” said Dr Julie Wilson Reynolds, Principal at St Hilda’s School in Southport. There is a body of research which suggests that girls do learn differently from boys. A high percentage of women who have become leaders in their field were educated at girls’ schools. “According to The Alliance of Girls’ Schools, research shows that girls perform better at school, and in life, if they are educated at single-sex schools,” said Dr Wilson Reynolds. There are predictions of worldwide shortages in graduates from STEM courses, yet only 6.9 per cent of Australian girls studied advanced mathematics in 2017, approximately half the rate of boys. However, girls’ schools are bucking the trend, with girls choosing to take mathematics, technology and advanced mathematics and physical science combinations at rates far higher than the national average. A leader in its field, St Hilda’s School has been inspiring women for more than a century.

There are many benefits of an all girls’ school, as Dr Wilson Reynolds explains. “Girl-centred learning leaves no doubt as to who receives the teacher’s full attention, or will be taking maths, science and technology classes,” she said. “All leadership roles are filled by girls, from captain of the touch football team to head of the student body. “There is also a greater sense of connectedness – listening, helping and accepting others’ points of view. “In a girls’ school, students see strong female role models and understand that they too can achieve successful outcomes from their own efforts.” Founded in 1912, St Hilda’s School is an Anglican day and boarding school for girls which provides an outstanding environment for girls’ education, delivering the highest standards in teaching, boarding and pastoral care for
“Innovation is embedded throughout the St Hilda’s culture, campus and curriculum, with the school recognised as an early adopter of technology in education.” St Hilda’s School aspires to develop confident, creative and articulate young women who are connected globally and strive to make a difference in their own community. “St Hilda’s offers a rigorous learning environment, which is active, creative and innovative, targeted at developing the whole person,” Dr Wilson Reynolds said. “As an Anglican school, St Hilda’s School voices a clear set of Christian values, believing in the power of love, compassion, forgiveness, hope and grace to provide a moral compass for our students and staff. “We encourage all to live by our school motto: Non Nobis Solum (not for ourselves alone) – in every aspect of life.” See first-hand why girls from Pre-Prep

ENTERTAINMENT
3 – 6 SEPTEMBER BIGSOUND
6 & 7 SEPTEMBER Birdsville Races
6 – 28 SEPTEMBER Brisbane Festival
BIGSOUND is back in Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley Live Music Precinct, with this year’s theme revealed as ‘The Artist As CEO’. BIGSOUND not only creates the Southern Hemisphere’s biggest live music party, but also provides artists, managers, labels, publishers, bookers and other music professionals with knowledge, inspiration and expanded thinking around their careers.
Billed as the ‘Melbourne Cup of the Outback’ Birdsville Races return for a jam-packed weekend program of thoroughbred racing and unique outback entertainment. Usually synonymous with plumes of striking red dust as horses gallop towards the iconic finishing post, this year the famously arid Birdsville race track has been transformed into a rare carpet of lush greenery thanks to recent floodwaters and rain in the surrounding Channel Country.
One of Australia’s major international arts events, Brisbane Festival explodes across the city with a thrilling program of theatre, music, dance, circus, opera and major public events such as Sunsuper Riverfire. This year’s line-up includes performances by Jacob Collier, Emma Louise, and Brisbane’s very own international pop icon Kate Miller-Heidke, direct from representing Australia at Eurovision.

LEO 24 Jul – 23 Aug
The next two months will be transformative. Events could change the face of your daily and personal life, especially in August. You’ll reap the rewards of hard work, even if a tough call or a minor hurdle has to be overcome first. The new moon supermoon on September 29 signals a fresh financial agreement that could be positive but you must avoid allowing sentiment to rule.

SAGITTARIUS 23 Nov – 22 Dec

VIRGO 24 Aug – 23 Sept
CAPRICORN 23 Dec – 20 Jan
August should bring a more confident and settled phase emotionally especially at home and with family. You’ll enjoy the opportunity to immerse yourself in a favourite project in August, and could also build more stability at work and in your general agreements. The Libran new moon supermoon on September 29 points to the chance to bring more healing and peace into your life.
TAURUS 21 Apr – 21 May
August’s two supermoons will present you with the chance for transformation. For some, change will occur in your personal life; for others, at work or with health. This is certainly an excellent time to instigate change, especially if you were born end of August, although all Virgos will experience the chance to 'ground' your plans for self-improvement, so take the initiative.
LIBRA 24 Sept – 23 Oct
AQUARIUS 21 Jan – 19 Feb
GEMINI 22 May – 21 Jun
SCORPIO 24 Oct – 22 Nov
PISCES 20 Feb – 20 Mar
CANCER 22 Jun – 23 Jul
An exciting and outgoing month in August will involve the chance to broaden your horizons. You could make great headway in your career; within your status and your projects. The new moon supermoon on August 30 may even bring a fresh contract or a change of financial circumstance. For some, developments will spell a personal development that is healing on many levels.
Be prepared to move forward with a health and wellbeing issue. You should gain the information you need in August to be able to steam ahead in practical ways to create more peace in a healthrelated, work or domestic context. Seek expert advice and expert knowledge. Once Mercury and Venus are in Libra from mid-September, you’ll feel you are gaining traction at work and at home.
Changes over coming months are part of a biggerpicture process that makes way for improvements across the board – from work to health; from relationships to domestic circumstances. But there will be intense developments, especially around the three consecutive new moons (August 1, August 30 and September 29). Be prepared for new beginnings and to forge fresh agreements.
August’s supermoons will motivate you to be more outgoing, making this month excellent for self-improvement. Find ways to boost your career, status and circumstances. You may hitch your star to a new social circle, group or organisation. A fresh contract may be in the making. Health could improve in September, so find ways to boost wellbeing then; the stars will help you.

You’ll get the chance to catch your breath over the next two months, as the changeable scenarios that have characterised the year so far will settle into place, giving you the chance to review and reorganise priorities if necessary, especially concerning your work and health routines. The supermoons on August 1 and August 30 suggest this is a good month to make changes at home.
You’ll appreciate the chance to get your feet on the ground over the next two months at home and to surge ahead with paperwork, communications and written projects. Keep an eye on joint agreements mid-August to avoid conflict. A new work agreement end of August could be ideal. Prepare for another fresh chapter late in September – once again in your domestic or personal life.
August’s two supermoons signal considerable developments in your personal life and finances. Be prepared to re-arrange some of your duties and financial arrangements in August, to better suit your ongoing circumstances. Avoid being distracted by the minutiae of your arrangements and focus on your big-picture plans so that you infuse your actions with purpose and meaning.
