Sanctuary Cove shootout

Nick O’Hern has shown some of his younger rivals he is just as competitive as ever, taking out the Mercedes-Benz Gold Coast Sanctuary Cove Professional Shootout. Played on The Pines golf course and starting with 19 players on the first hole, Nick almost claimed it during the 14th hole chip off, however, the longer the day went on the more it looked as if some of the young blood may show their stamina. As a big crowd, including nearly 200 golf buggies, surrounded the 18th hole, the stage was set for Nick to hole a 10-foot putt, taking home just shy of $17,000 of the $50,000 total prize pool and the 2019 title.

WORDS LEX MARTIN / THE INTERVIEW PEOPLE HE CAME TO PROMINENCE on our TV screens in the historical drama series Downton Abbey but as Hugh Bonneville explains there is more to playing Robert Crawley, Earl of Grantham, than just donning period clothing. Downton Abbey has been very successful. What is the secret? Good writing, heads of department working on the top of their game and timing. I used to think it was mainly about timing but the show has worked in whichever territory has received it in the past ten years so it was not just about timing. I can only accredit it to my own experience when I first read the script. I couldn’t put it down. I could see all the characters in my head, and I cared about them, even if I didn’t like all of them or didn’t like what they were doing. That has translated onto the screen, because the heads of department, the creative team, we happened to strike it lucky. You don’t get it often, the combination of everyone working at the top of their game. We did on this show and it struck a chord somehow and has resonated ever since. You can’t bottle that and sell it unfortunately. I’m sure everyone sets out to make the best show. Downton Abbey did and has done and continues to. I am just thrilled. Why are people are so obsessed with the show? I was pitching an idea to TV company the other day and they said‚ ‘sounds a bit domestic to us’. And I said ‘so was Downtown Abbey, which is why it probably didn’t work!’. One of the reasons it has worked is because it’s true to its world.

30 covemagazine.com.au

– Issue 75

It is true to the authenticity of the fictionalised world of the first part of the last century. It is not trying to be international, it is not trying to tick boxes. You buy into it, the weirdness of the social structures, the little nuances of social behaviour, somehow. Even people from as far-flung as China or Venezuela get it and they are intrigued by it. But it’s ultimately because the characters and the interplay between the characters are universal. The fact that it’s so specific is one of the reasons why it has become universal. Is there anything you appreciate about that time – manners, etiquette, strictness? What I appreciate and have increasingly appreciated is the sense of courtesy and tolerance which we seem to be throwing out of the window in many areas of our public discourse these days. There is a sense in the show, in that era of courtesy and tolerance without being patronising, of listening to others and appreciating others’ opinions. Julian Fellowes is writing from the default position that everyone tries to be good. Everyone tries to do the best in life. They may do wrong things, they may end up in cul-de-sacs of poor behaviour or even evil behaviour, but they are trying to survive, they are trying to get through and I think that’s something we all recognise. And that’s another reason why the show has worked. Because all these characters are flawed and are doing recognisably human things. In terms of its sense of decorum, of course I wouldn’t want to go back to that stuffiness and

that social stratification that it depicts and clearly celebrates. But the simple basics of good manners are pretty good. You made a lot of movies earlier in your career but now everybody associates you with Downton Abbey. Does that bother you? Not at all because it’s also allowed me to be Mr. Brown in Paddington. We have done two movies now, which have been hugely successful. All the time we were doing Downton Abbey I was also doing a sitcom for the BBC on the other channel so I was able to keep my mental muscles flexed in different directions. I will always be extremely proud of being associated with the show, but it has not defined me totally. Were you always happy about the development of your character in the script? When we received the scripts for each season, I usually got on the phone to Julian Fellowes and I said ‘Robert Crawley used to be an intelligent man, now he is completely stupid and he can’t see what is right in front of his face. Why has his IQ sunk so low?’ Julian would say ‘Trust me, everything is going to be alright.’ And usually by the end of the season, Robert did something to redeem himself. I put trust in my creator. He has this extraordinary ability as a writer to hold all these worlds and all these lives in his head. He knows it better than anyone. >>

Were you convinced to do this as a movie? Gareth Neame started talking about it when we filming season five. He said ‘What do you think the mood would be? Do you think you people would like you to do it?’ I said, ‘I’m sure they would, but the problem is going to be contracting everyone’. There were several iterations of the script and it took a long time for the wheels to get in motion so it was nearly three years before we got back together. It was a great testament to every person’s affection for the show that we wanted to, because we literally did all have to decide to do it together. It was a question of holding hands and jumping in at the same time. Were there funny and humourous experiences during the shoot? Oh yes, a lot of times. Filming is a slow, tedious process so to keep yourselves amused is essential. It was easier on this project because it was only a ten-week-shoot rather than a twenty-week shoot so the end was in sight, you didn’t get that sense of being entrenched. The most entertaining night – there is a tiny sequence when we were in the rain, putting chairs on a wagon – we had these rain machines and were splashing about, singing Singin’ in the Rain. It was a lot of fun. How does it feel when fans approach you on the street? On the whole they don’t. It’s only in the UK, people come up and they want to talk to you about your work. Sometimes it’s about Paddington and sometimes it’s about a character from the sitcom I used to do. Or sometimes it’s Lord Grantham. And you are just aware when you are in a restaurant, there are people with camera phones all the time.

32 covemagazine.com.au

– Issue 75

It’s lovely when they come up and say ‘Can I take a photograph?’ It’s not so lovely when they are being surreptitious. But at least they are not coming up and punching me. Do you like meeting your fans? It’s always great because – it’s a cliché – when you are sitting in a tiny trailer in a very cold field in Berkshire in the middle of England in February, as we were at the beginning of each season, the cast was cold, everything is wet, and you think ‘does anyone give a monkey about this show’, and then to meet people years later for whom the show has meant so much to the extent that they phone in and answer a quiz to have the chance to have a cup of tea is wonderful. It never ceases to a) amaze us and b) hearten us that people care about it so much – far more than we do. Some people even go as far as to dress like the characters, which is a bit surreal sometimes. The passion of the fans and the care they have in treating these characters as friends is delightful. It does make those February mornings worthwhile. You also have prominent fans like Michelle Obama. Did you visit her? We did. When we were doing the show, we did go to Washington, D.C., quite frequently. It seemed a stop on our tour. And then we learned that Michelle Obama was a fan. She invited us to one of the Christmas parties at the White House and gave us a private audience. We were very honoured to meet her. They have these amazing Christmas parties at the White House for charitable causes. We were able to sneak in and share the candy canes and the Christmas cheer.

Did you keep any props from the show? I couldn’t do that for contractual reasons, but there was a letter from Lady Rose to Lord Grantham that was very unhappy in the pile of props so I did liberate that. I threatened to liberate some mustard pots, but I didn’t in the end. And then very kindly, after we had finished, the designer sent me the original telegram declaring war against Germany from the end of season one, which is now framed in my toilet. Would you like to do another Downton Abbey movie? Sure, if this one works. It’ll all depend on whether our loyal audience, who was so wonderful in their homes, will get out of their chairs and go to the cinema. I think I would urge anyone who did like the show to go and see the movie because I think this story works best on the big screen. It is very filmic, it looks beautiful. In what way does the show impact your personal life? Both the work and the social opportunities that it provided in terms of travel and other work has had an impact. In terms of my domestic life, it didn’t affect much at all because I live one hour from Highclere Castle and about one hour and a half from the studio. It was not as if I was having to vacate and be on set somewhere foreign for a long time. That was great. And it was a huge influence on me to decide whether to do the final season because it was a transition year for my boy. I thought, if I do the sixth season, I have to stay at home, which is great, and it means I can do the school run two days a week. That was a big factor. It played well into my domestic life.

ICONIC BRANDS In 2010, Deep Sea Under the Pole by Rolex reported on the world beneath the arctic ice caps.

PERPETUAL PLANET

As the 21st century unfolds Rolex continues the legacy of its founder, supporting the explorers of today on their new mission: to make the planet perpetual.

THE WORD ‘PERPETUAL’ is inscribed on every Rolex Oyster. But more than just a word on a dial, it is a philosophy that embodies the company’s vision and values. Hans Wilsdorf, the founder of Rolex, instilled a quest for excellence that underpins all the company’s activities, from its watchmaking to its long-term support for those who strive to push back the boundaries of human endeavour and achievement. Since the 1930s, Rolex has been an active supporter of pioneering explorers, individuals who have ventured to the most extreme places on Earth to shed light on the natural world. Rolex watches have accompanied these explorers to the highest mountains and to the ocean depths, serving as precise, reliable tools. In turn, these ground-breaking expeditions have proved to be the perfect living laboratory for the brand to test and develop its timepieces. For the past century, Rolex has been linked to some of the greatest feats of exploration.

In 1933, the brand equipped the British Everest Expedition and again, in 1953, on Sir John Hunt’s historic expedition when Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay became the first men to reach the summit of Mount Everest. In honour of this Everest milestone, Rolex launched the Explorer watch in 1953. The Explorer model was eventually improved with a reinforced case and a more legible dial for extreme conditions. Since that time, the Explorer has benefited from every technical advance to Rolex watches, though its appearance remains the same. But the world has changed. As the 21st century unfolds, exploration for pure discovery has given way to exploration as a means to preserve the natural world. To this aim, in 2019, Rolex launched a campaign titled Perpetual Planet. To begin with, the campaign has three pillars – leading ocean explorer Sylvia Earle’s Mission Blue initiative to protect the oceans through a network of marine protected

‘Hope Spots’; the Rolex Awards for Enterprise that recognise individuals with projects that advance knowledge and protect human well-being and the environment; and its longstanding National Geographic partnership. Established in 1976 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Rolex Oyster chronometer – the world’s first waterproof wristwatch – the Rolex Awards for Enterprise were designed to foster a spirit of enterprise, advance human knowledge and well-being, and protect our cultural heritage and the environment. Rolex continues the legacy of its founder, Hans Wilsdorf, by supporting the explorers of today on a new mission to chart changes in the Earth’s ecosystems. Their long-standing commitment to preserve the world around us and provide support to key individuals and organisations finding solutions to the world’s environmental challenges remains a primary focus … now and into the future. >>

2019 Laureates Miranda Wang, João Campos-Silva, Krithi Karanth, Grégoire Courtine and Brian Gitta. On 14 June, Rolex named the five 2019 Rolex Awards Laureates who will receive funding and other benefits for their inspiring projects that will improve life on the planet. They are: JOÃO CAMPOS-SILVA, 36, BRAZIL – In the Amazon, the giant arapaima, the world’s largest scaled freshwater fish, which weighs up to 200kg, is headed for extinction. But in a close partnership with local associations and fishing leaders, the Brazilian fisheries ecologist has a plan to save not only the arapaima but with it, the livelihoods, food supply and culture of the indigenous communities who depend on the region’s rivers for survival.

GRÉGOIRE COURTINE, 44, FRANCE – A scientist based in Switzerland, Courtine is developing a revolutionary approach to help people with paralysis walk again. His method relies on reestablishing communication between the brain and spinal cord using an implantable electronic ‘bridge’, potentially encouraging nerve regrowth and restoring control of the legs.

KRITHI KARANTH, 40, INDIA – Conservation scientist Krithi Karanth is determined to reduce the friction between wildlife and people living near Indian national parks by reducing threats to people, property and livestock, raising conservation awareness in communities and schools and, assisting with compensation claims through a toll-free helpline.

BRIAN GITTA, 26, UGANDA – Delaying treatment for malaria for weeks while waiting for test results is common in rural Africa. Gitta is conducting trials on a novel, low-cost, portable device, the Matiscope, which provides results in minutes using light and magnets – without the need for a blood sample. In 2017, Africa had 200 million cases of malaria.

MIRANDA WANG, 25, CANADA – Long involved in investigating the problem of plastic pollution, California-based, Canadian entrepreneur and molecular biologist Miranda Wang is spearheading an innovative process of turning unrecyclable plastic waste from items such as plastic bags and packing materials into valuable chemicals for use in industrial and consumer products.

EMMA CAMP

2019 Associate Laureate of the Rolex Awards for Enterprise Marine biologist and explorer, Emma Camp, has been honoured as an Associate Laureate of the Rolex Awards for Enterprise at a special event on Hamilton Island. Launched 43 years ago, The Rolex Awards for Enterprise are a pillar of Rolex’s Perpetual Planet campaign that supports individuals seeking to find solutions to the most pressing environmental challenges, such as those posed by a global warming. Emma was chosen as an Associate Laureate for her strategy to aid the world’s coral reefs – victims of human activity and climate change – which leading scientists have predicted could be gone by the 2030s. She is identifying hot spots of naturally resilient corals along the 2,000 km of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef – the world’s largest coral assemblage – that can withstand stresses such as acidic and warming waters, studying their key traits in resilience and then, for the first time, trying to transplant them to areas devastated by mass coral death. Emma’s project exemplifies the spirit of enterprise demonstrated by the Award winners who have been recognised by Rolex over more than four decades.-

COVER STORY

WEARABLE VINTAGE The Charlotte Smith Fashion Collection is offering Queenslanders the chance to own a piece of fashion history.

WORDS RHONDA OXNAM “BECOMING THE CUSTODIAN of a priceless collection of fashion sounds like every woman’s dream come true.” For Charlotte Smith, not only was it a dream come true, it was the beginning of a whole new career. Charlotte inherited The Darnell Collection (now known as The Charlotte Smith Fashion Collection) from her American Quaker Godmother, Doris Darnell. Recognised as one of ten significant private fashion collections in the world, the collection grew out of donations and gifts from her family’s wide circle of friends and acquaintances. Most of the items came with accompanying letters, photographs and stories that linked them to the original owners or donors and often about the occasions to which they were worn.

42 covemagazine.com.au

– Issue 75

“My mission as the current custodian is to build on the extraordinary historical background of the collection and to bring it to life as a resource,” says Charlotte. “I love working with national and international galleries, fashion events and global companies who, by aligning with the collection, make the point that ‘the past inspires the present and creates the future’.” Showcasing 300 years of fashion history, there are now over 9,000 dresses and accessories including couture, demi-couture and vintage pieces in the collection which is stored in Sydney. However, given the amount of space required to house the items, Charlotte has decided to hold a series of trunk shows to streamline the collection and allow other fashion devotees to share her passion.

“I am trying to reduce it down in size to something more manageable and will be holding a curated sale at the InterContinental Sanctuary Cove Resort on the Gold Coast in October,” Charlotte says. “I’m not selling anything that has been gifted but have put together a really bespoke selection tailored to suit the Queensland climate and lifestyle including vintage couture, labels such as Pucci and Chanel and some beautiful wedding dresses from the 1930s and 50s. “There will be lots of colour and pattern … and I’ve also added some inspirational pieces for fashion designers and collectors. “I welcome anyone with an interest in fashion and history to come along to the trunk show and purchase their own piece of wearable vintage art.”

TOTAL PAVÉCTION

Designer Jeweller and Specialist Diamond Setter, Robert Bellamy, creates extraordinary, unique pieces at his Brisbane studio.

WORDS SUSAN LANG-LEMCKERT perfection [ per-fek-shuh-n ] noun • the state or quality of being or becoming perfect • the highest degree of proficiency, skill or excellence, as in some art • a perfect embodiment or example of something IN THE END, perfection in fine designer jewellery comes down to the skill and passion that goes into creating the individual design – which incorporates a client’s personality and style into a precious piece they can wear. And few artisans are better acquainted with the importance of design to the creation of fine bespoke jewellery than Pavéction’s Robert Bellamy. “Really understanding the client and what they need and want – whether it’s an engagement ring or a showpiece – is crucial,” he says. “The individuality of the piece, and the quality of workmanship and materials, are of the highest importance. “Jewellery purchases are significant for most people, both emotionally and financially, so I want to give my clients the confidence that they’re getting exactly what they expect from Pavéction.” After completing his initial training in Brisbane, Robert’s passion for jewellery design and creation led him to Europe where, surrounded

44 covemagazine.com.au

– Issue 75

by many of the world’s finest jewellery houses, he studied specialised setting techniques and perfected his craftsmanship and individual style. It was here, while immersed in the world of high jewellery, that his vision to establish a prestige atelier in Brisbane was born. And when he did, he named it Pavéction to reflect both the pavé diamond setting technique he specialises in, and the perfection that’s synonymous with every piece that he and his team create. “I love that when I make a piece I can guarantee my clients will be receiving the finest jewellery and exceptional value for their purchase,” he says. As a contemporary manufacturer, Pavéction embraces the latest advances in technology – such as microscopes for precise gem setting and finishing, laser techniques and computer-aided design (CAD) – using these in parallel with the more traditional jewellery-crafting techniques. This ensures all creations are both masterfully crafted and as individual as the client. A gem of choice in many Pavéction creations is the rare Argyle pink diamond. To give some perspective of the exceptional rarity and value of these diamonds: less than 0.1 per cent of all rough diamonds mined at Argyle are classed as pink in colour.

ARGYLE DIAMONDS

Out of this 0.1 per cent, only the finest and rarest pink, red and blue diamonds ever mined at Argyle are held for their annual Pink Diamond Tender, which is one of the most exclusive diamond tenders in the world. Privileged to be working with these worldfamous diamonds, Robert often invites clients in for private viewings and design appointments centred around these irreplaceable natural Australian gemstones. Robert’s expertise in fine diamonds in general – and in Argyle pink diamonds in particular – both as an element of fine jewellery and as an investment, is extensive, and is something he’s more than happy to share. “There’s a lot of information available online, but I welcome anyone wanting to know more about Argyle pink diamonds to contact me,” he says. “I regularly host clients in my Brisbane studio – it’s a relaxed setting where we can discuss commissioning a bespoke piece or investigating Argyle Diamond investment opportunities. Whatever the client is looking for I am happy to work with them to achieve the perfect outcome.” When asked about his most memorable creation, Robert says it’s difficult to choose just one as they’re all memorable.

Then he nominates Cuvee de Prestige – an 18ct yellow gold and platinum champagne bottle set with nearly 700 internally flawless diamonds, using his favoured pavé technique – as his most loved. So much so that he also says that crafting a life-sized Cuvee de Prestige would be his ultimate project, though that might have to wait for some time due to his busy schedule of design and creation commitments. “I’m working on a beautiful necklace showpiece at the moment,” he says. “It’s in the prototype phase just now, but it’s going to be stunning and will be biggest piece by sheer size that I have done to date. “So much passion goes into every piece I create that, often, I’ll feel very connected to it myself by the time it’s finished.” Robert’s love for Australian beauty extends to his private life, with Bedarra Island Resort in the Great Barrier Reef his ultimate escape. “It’s barefoot luxury at its best and was actually voted as the #1 Luxury Resort in Queensland,” Robert explains. “I had my own wedding and honeymoon there and it was perfection … or should we say Pavéction.”

Like Edward Hargraves, who’d surmised that geological similarities between the Californian goldfields and parts of New South Wales suggested the latter held deposits of undiscovered gold, geologist Ewen Tyler was sure there’d be diamonds in the Kimberleys, as there were in the similarly-landscaped South Africa. After some years pursuing mining exploration in Africa and Europe, Tyler returned to Australia to test the theory, establishing the Kalamburu Joint Venture to search for diamonds in the north of his home state. Progress continued with mixed results, and along the way CRA Ltd (later to become Rio Tinto Ltd) joined the project, which then became the Ashton Joint Venture. With additional equipment and resources the search progressed with renewed conviction, ultimately leading to the diamond discovery at Smoke Creek and the subsequent establishment of the Argyle Diamond Mine. Today Argyle is one of the world’s largest diamond producers, and the chief supplier of natural coloured diamonds – including white, champagne, cognac, blue, red and pink – in fact, Argyle produces 90-95 per cent of all pink and red diamonds. And while they’ve always been precious and valuable, the announced 2020 closure of the Kimberley mine means Argyle diamonds will soon become irreplaceable pieces of natural Australian Art.

WORDS RHONDA OXNAM I HAVE JUST RETURNED from an amazing European holiday, visiting 13 countries in 14 weeks and travelling by car, coach, boat, plane, train and – on one very memorable day – a funicular. Planning for such a wide-ranging adventure took months and, in many ways, the excitement started long before I boarded the first flight. And that is one of the best things about travel … it is not just the journey itself, but all the different aspects that combine into one memorable experience.

The thrust of the engine as the plane leaves the tarmac, the sense of wonder as you explore a new city, the memories that come flooding back when you return to a place you love, the hiccups along the way that turn into adventures. Since I’ve been back countless people have asked me what my favourite place/experience/ memory is … and I struggle to answer. Yes the lights of Budapest at night took my breathe away; yes, I cried when I saw the interior of Gaudi’s Sagrada Familia; yes, I lost my way in Dublin and ended up walking over 16 kilometres

trying to find my way back to the hotel; yes, I would return to the stunning Italian Riviera in a heartbeat. But to pick just one … impossible. Now you would think that this trip would have cured me of my wanderlust and prompted me to stay home for the foreseeable future but in many ways it has just inspired me to see more of the world. As a result, I have already been pouring over itineraries, researching possible destinations and planning my next adventure. Did somebody mention Scandinavia?

DREAM AWAY

After a two-year refurbishment, Daydream Island is once again welcoming visitors to the Whitsundays.

Invitation WORDS ANGELA ORAM IF YOU’RE THINKING of exploring the Whitsundays make sure Daydream Island is on your list. A quick two-hour flight from Brisbane to Hamilton Island and you’re ready to kick into island holiday mode. The 30-minute ferry trip from Hamilton Island to Daydream Island is nothing short of spectacular. Secluded beaches that appear as though they have never been walked on, beautiful rock formations and ocean that will take even a Gold Coast locals breathe away. You know as soon as you see the island that you are in for something special. Located in the heart of the Whitsundays, Daydream Island spans one kilometre long with coral and sand beaches lined by palm trees, a tropical rainforest and its own Living Reef bursting with marine life. Daydream Island recently underwent a $140 million renovation and re-build, following the devastation of Cyclone Debbie two years ago. Evoking a sense of paradise, the resort has been transformed with new restaurants and bars, expansive suites looking out to the Whitsundays and an idyllic pool designed for that Insta-worthy photo. There are three restaurants to keep your tastebuds dancing while you’re on holidays. Inkstone and Infinity boast spectacular views of the Whitsunday Islands, making mealtimes on the island an unforgettable experience. As befitting an island resort, the rooms are light, spacious and comfortable, with plenty of room to relax. We were fortunate enough to have a suite with an amazing view of the surrounding islands. Sunsets looking out over the pools and ocean are simply stunning and the laidback feel of the resort sees people congregating on the grass and in the hammocks to enjoy this magical time of day. >>

Unique to Daydream Island is the Living Reef. This eco-friendly, educational reef wraps over 200m of the central building and holds an impressive 1.5 million litres of water. Sharks, baby stingrays, starfish, sea cucumbers and over 100 unique species of marine fish can all be seen while dining in Graze restaurant or visiting the underwater observatory. You can also enter the tank, to swim, touch and learn about the reef and its inhabitants. The owners haven’t just thought about how their guests can enjoy the resort but also the surrounds. There are well-planned short walking tracks to the top of the island with a viewing deck and chairs at the top for you to enjoy the scenery. This is a great light walk to do after breakfast or just before dinner.

DAYDREAM ISLAND AMBASSADOR – LINCOLN LEWIS

If you crave a little more action there are kayaks, beach sports, catamarans, jet ski tours and rental and fish feeding all available on the island. A trip to Whitehaven Beach is a must-do when visiting the Whitsundays, and this can be organised from the resort as well. I’m a big fan of the ‘reduce, reuse, recycle’ approach taken on the island. The resort avoids disposable cups, plates, cutlery and napkins where possible, separates their rubbish and recyclable materials and mulches green waste from the gardens. Their waste water is recycled through a special treatment facility and thanks to a recent major upgrade, the water produced is 99.9 per cent pure. While it’s fit for drinking, it is only used to irrigate the gardens.

Former Home and Away heart-throb Lincoln Lewis has been announced as the new ambassador for Daydream Island. Born and raised in Brisbane, the Aussie actor was among the first to explore the new resort when it re-opened in April 2019. Sustainability and marine wildlife conservation will be at the forefront of his new role, as well as the all-important job of test driving the island’s experiences such as snorkelling, jet skiing, stand-up paddle boarding and helicopter rides. “I’m stoked to be working with an such an iconic Australian holiday destination, really being able to explore the very best of the Whitsundays region,” he said. “Daydream Island is the perfect destination for an actionpacked adventure, developing your knowledge about the local marine life through their Living Reef or just lounging by the pool taking in the view – I can’t wait to do it all.” As part of his new role, Lincoln will work with the team of resident marine biologists at Daydream Island’s Living Reef to help spread the word on marine life and reef conservation.

They also save energy where possible by using energy efficient lights, making sure all appliances have the best suitable energy rating and installing insulation to reduce the need for air-conditioning. But yes, there is definitely air conditioning throughout the resort and rooms. We spent three days enjoying the island and surrounding area, eating and drinking a little too much, getting a good dose of vitamin D and recharging the batteries. Overall, whether you’re looking for a quick weekend away or a week full of relaxation, Daydream Island won’t disappoint.

HOMEGROWN

Native ingredients are adding a new dimension to many restaurant menus.

WORDS & PHOTOGRAPHY MARJ OSBORNE WE LIVE IN A LAND OF PLENTY; a land whose forests and foreshores are brimming with food and medicine. Spread out across the lands of the Scenic Rim, Gold Coast and Stradbroke Islands you will find over 200 native edible plants, tubers, grains, flowers and fruit. Our oceans and foreshores are full of seafood, edible seaweed and coastal plants that have been foraged by tribal peoples for about 40,000 years. Collectively, they are our own ‘superfoods’ packed with health benefits; some of the oldest foods in the world, however, most of us know little about them, let alone including them in our daily diet. You will increasingly find many indigenous edible plants on restaurant menus, their popularity brought to the fore most notably by Rene Redzepi at the recent Australian pop-up of his acclaimed Noma restaurant in Sydney. However, we are yet to find many native ingredients as everyday items on supermarket shelves. “We feel Australia is pretty under-represented when it comes to cuisine,” Rosella’s Bar co-owner Jon Debeere says. “Not many people have tried much from our own backyard.” It’s a situation that must change, according to local farmer and native ingredient producer James Geralds.

72 covemagazine.com.au

– Issue 75

“We want to pass on a culture that many Australians have ignored. It’s important for us to claim and promote native products as standalone ingredients,” James says. “Otherwise we may ‘lose’ these foods, with other countries stepping in to claim the bounty,” he adds, citing the example of the Australian macadamia whose potential was not maximised in its native country. The nut is now grown extensively through Hawaii, the US and South Africa, the world’s largest producer. “It’s time for Australian food to stand up on the world stage, for us to promote it as quickly as we can. However, the first step is for Australians to recognise their own food and incorporate it into everyday dining, not just in restaurants,” he says, Ironically, as Australian immigrants, he and his wife Katie have seen both the potential and possible threats that we have failed to recognise in our own foodscape. While there are many restaurants using local seafood and shellfish as well as macadamias, there are few native restaurants in Australia. However, you will find a range of native ingredients being used in some South East Queensland restaurants and bars. The chefs at Kingfisher Bay Resort’s signature Seabelle Restaurant draw inspiration from Fraser Island’s indigenous Butchulla tribe and the island’s beautiful setting, crafting menus from

local and seasonal produce, fresh seafood and native ingredients endemic to the area. Stokehouse Q Restaurant’s Chef Richard Ousby uses everything from quandong to saltbush supplied by a local forager in the dishes on his menu which include Kangaroo carpaccio and Rocky Point black kingfish with riberry gin and desert lime. At Rosella’s Bar in Burleigh Heads most dishes on the menu either utilise ingredients native to Australia or have nostalgic elements to them, such as the Australian Caprese Insalata’s heirloom tomatoes topped with Aussie buffalo mozzarella and ground bush tomatoes dressed with macadamia oil, ice plant and native basil, or the Roo Carpaccio’s toppings of Davidson plum dressing and karkalla. Primarily stocking Australian-made drinks, Rosella’s bar range includes native ingredient liqueurs from Tamborine Mountain Distillery, Brookie’s rainforest botanicals gin and liqueur, Green Ant Gin, and cocktails made using syrups from The Native Collection. Their signature Rosella cocktail is made from vodka, Australian bitters, rosella jam, lemon and lilly pilly, served in a rosella shaped glass. The North Room’s owner Chef Tim Stewart’s use of eclectic combinations of ingredients, including native Bunya nuts on organic chicken with persimmon and olive, and Pottsville pippies with pickled green tomatoes and local coastal

greens is inspired, earning the restaurant a place in the ‘Delicious Top 100’ Australian restaurants two years in a row. Their native Davidson plum cocktail adds a refreshing accompaniment to the food. Kokum’s new Indian cuisine is unique. Using cooking methods and flavour combinations from the Far East, local seafood and meat are combined with Pan-Asian Pacific ingredients, including native Australian bush foods such as Kakadu plum, saltbush and pepper berries. These ingredients are melded in the crucible of Chef Merchant’s kitchen to emerge as exciting modern culinary creations. Newly opened brunch spot, Cross + Feather, serves up native ingredients as part of its food and drink menus including a Kingfish Ceviche with sunrise lime, sea fennel, burnt mango, fermented cucumber and native botanicals. You’ll also find some native ingredients on the menus of room81, Taverna and The Bombay Cricketer’s Club. Many drinks menus have a distinctive native twist. Balboa Italian features a stunning range of cocktails using syrups by The Native Collection fresh from Green Cauldron Farm in Tyalgum, while The Collective’s All Aussie Adventures cocktail contains eucalypt, rainforest botanical Brookies gin, local spiced Pacific Ale and lemon myrtle, along with other ingredients. WINE CELLAR

GENTLY-MADE GRENACHE Kevin Glastonbury – Senior Red Winemaker at Yalumba – is heralding a new era of Australian Grenache.

WORDS TONY HARPER SOMETHING STRANGE has been happening to Aussie Grenache. It’s losing colour, losing alcohol and even the boisterous, jammy flavours that have characterised the wines for so long seem to be fading away. And isn’t that great? The best of the new breed are finer, more perfumed, more elegant ... like warmclimate Pinots. In fact, there has been a tangible refining of Australian wines across all sorts of varieties and regions – the backing off of new oak, scaling back the ripeness and alcohol, and in some ways Grenache is merely part of the pack. But it is a variety that favours warm regions – Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Clare Valley – that are traditionally home to big, fleshy, bold reds. And even if there has also been a toningdown of South Aussie Shiraz, the change has been far less pronounced than the rather startling turnaround in Grenache. Exactly who or what sparked this change is open for debate, but my vote goes to Kevin Glastonbury – Senior Red Winemaker at Yalumba.

76 covemagazine.com.au

– Issue 75

Some things happen with a bang. Others weave their magic slowly and quietly, and I reckon Kevin Glastonbury and his wines took the slow path. He is Barossa-born and raised, and has been working in Barossa wineries since the late 1970s. He joined Yalumba in 1998 – a time when Yalumba, just like every other decent Barossa producer, was making rich, full-bodied, oakladen reds. He is simply a good bloke; affable, easy-going and without apparent pretensions, which in the wine trade is a rare attribute. Sometime around a decade ago Kevin showed me a lineup of Yalumba Grenache and Grenache blends and for the very first time I noticed wines that swam against the tide. They were much finer and gentler than most, and spoke of site rather than winemaking input. For me it was an epiphany that changed my way of thinking about the variety. Ever since I’ve been chasing gently-made Grenache. Just a few weeks ago he treated me to much the same tasting, but with current vintage wines.

And you know what? They are even more elegant, more refined than they were a decade ago. It’s a neat trick. The hearts of all the wines but one lie in a special old bush-pruned vineyard in Vine Vale named Tri-Centenary, initially planted in 1889. Some of the original vines are still producing, but there are other parcels planted in 1936, 1948 and more recently. The tasting kicked off with the Yalumba Old Bush Vine Grenache. Around 30 per cent of the blend comes from the Tri-Centenary vineyard with the other 70 per cent sourced from grower vineyards across the valley. It’s made to be a crowd-pleaser (after all, it sells for just a smidge over $20) plump and juicy, more about bright fruits than oak, but still right in the zone of modern Grenache. And there’s a fast-growing market for these lighter, plush, low-tannin, easy access reds. In the Queensland summer with a light chill (20 minutes or so in the fridge) they are spectacular.

Invitation Cove Travel invites you to a Cruising evening with: Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises & Azamara. The 2017 Vine Vale Grenache comes from a single parcel in the Tri-Centenary vineyard planted in 1948, and it is separated from the rest of the crew by a 30 per cent portion of wholebunch in the mix. This means that bunches have been thrown into the fermenter whole – with berries and stalks intact, just as you’d buy your grapes from the greengrocer – instead of the usual method of de-stalking and crushing. This adds a slightly herbal, savoury element to the wine, and a brightness. You can smell and taste the whole bunch component, but you can also feel its texture. There is so much to love about this wine; it is gentle and feminine (from a variety that has always been so blatantly masculine), with layers of intrigue, and tannins that pull everything together. A little over a decade ago Yalumba purchased a small, drygrown Grenache vineyard (a mere 796 vines) near Kalimna, that was originally planted in 1954, and from it comes the odd horse of the set: 2016 Carriage Block. Less than 100 dozen was produced, so it’s kind of rare. It was fermented entirely with indigenous yeasts (natural rather than from a packet) and made more conventionally than the Vine Vale, i.e., no whole bunch. So in some ways it’s a more direct expression of vineyard, with very little winemaking artefact. It is gorgeous ... pretty, even though there’s a definite density and richness to the wine. But it’s kind of orchestral – lots of elements coming together for a single purpose, and each of those elements is light on its feet. It’s a stellar example of the importance of vineyard site: it’s as different from the Vine Vale wines as my children are from my neighbour’s. Then the star of the show: 2015 Tri-Centenary Grenache. The grapes come from a two-acre block of the original 1889 plantings – a mere 820 bush vines. This is a wine made to age. But even though it has more concentration, structure and density than any of its siblings, it is still fine, perfumed and savoury. In terms of winemaking, not much has changed, except for an extended period (41 days) on skins. It’s funny how wine is sort of topsy-turvy. The most generous, plump and accessible wine is the entry-level. The most reticent, insular wine is the Tri-Centenary ... the most expensive. But behind the reticence there is depth and power. It needs cellar time, decanter time, and then contemplation time to flower. Gone are the days of bigger equals better; more oak equals better. It’s build, complexity and subtlety that hallmarks great wine, and I think Kevin Glastonbury has found the mark. Issue 75 – covemagazine.com.au

BUILT FOR SPEED

Sportier, sexier and smoother – discover the all-new Aston Martin V8 Vantage. WORDS CHRIS NIXON

THE IMAGE OF ASTON MARTIN isn’t just about James Bond, but undeniably 007’s movie cars helped more people become aware of the make than any racetrack result. Because of Bond and especially his spyarmoured DB5, we know Aston Martin is a sports car that epitomises British upper-class elegance and fine hand-craftmanship. While that remains so, Aston Martin has needed to update its products when rivals including Ferrari, Lamborghini and Porsche are building increasingly outrageous models. Beside a swoopy Ferrari 458 or Lamborghini Hurracan, an Aston Martin V8 Vantage looked beautiful but, well … British. All that’s changing and Aston designer Marek Reichman (a Yorkshireman, despite his name) is rolling out an array of coupes that are among the most desirable anywhere. Aston’s future product plan includes the Valhalla and Valkyrie ultra-performance, midengined sports cars and an inevitable SUV, to be called DBX.

80 covemagazine.com.au

– Issue 75

Already it has introduced the DB11, Superleggera and our review subject, the V8 Vantage. The Vantage is Aston Martin’s entry-level offering, priced from just less than $310,000. The role of entry-level models in any range is to tempt new, younger buyers and the latest Vantage design does this by being reminiscent of the previous 2005 model while looking more aggressive and a lot sexier. Its most distinctive feature is the grille, still the same recognisable Aston shape but set lower than ever in the nose so the car appears to be inhaling the road. In fact, it is. The low front air-splitter and smooth body undersides are devices that create low pressure areas and improve aero flow to a diffuser in the tail. Vents in the flanks suck speed-sapping air pressure out of the front wheel wells. Behind those beautiful lines is aerodynamic science that makes the Vantage faster and more stable.

It’s still an Aston Martin, but the wilder look should attract interest from types whose usual preference has been for something Italian and brightly-painted. But what’s this under the bonnet? The previous Vantage’s V8 dating from the time Ford owned the company has been replaced by a Mercedes AMG, regarded by many as currently one of the greatest performance V8s. Mercedes-Benz hasn’t bought Aston Martin, though; it’s just a supplier. Obvious visuals aside, this is the most significant difference in the all-new Vantage. The aluminium, four-cam, twin-turbocharged 4.0 litre motor comes from the Mercedes AMG C63S sedan sold widely in Australia, but has been tuned for this new installation. It belts out 375 kiloWatts of power and 685 Newtonmetres of torque. Combined with modest kerb weight of 1530kg (thanks to a bonded aluminium body structure) and an ZF eight-speed automatic transmission,

Invitation

the Merc engine fires the Vantage from rest to 100kmh in a mere 3.6 seconds and claimed top speed is 314kmh (195 miles-an-hour on the Imperial scale the Brits still use). But these supercar numbers are only part of the story – it’s the experience rather than the sheer speed that gives the thrills. When the accelerator is floored, you know instantly you’re sitting behind an epic motor. It can be docile, but is explosive when summoned to perform. As with virtually all premium cars these days, there is a choice of driver-selectable drive modes. Choose Track mode instead of Sport or Sport+ and the Vantage’s dynamic responses not only become sharper – except the dampers, which are adjusted separately – but also exhaust valves open to fully release one of the mightiest roars in motoring. It’s louder outside than inside, apparently. I was surprised when, several times during my test run, drivers ahead pulled off the road to let me pass, either fascinated or fearful of the thundering beast in their mirrors. The V8 Vantage is Aston Martin’s smallest sports car – and it is a sports car, not a cruisy GT – so it’s predictably nippy through the bends. The available grip is more than most drivers will ever challenge on the public road. The only inhibitor to fast driving on tight roads is that the width of the bonnet can make it difficult to precisely judge corners; familiarity should fix that. There’s a new interior, of course, and it needs only to be said it’s an excellently-designed workspace finished as you would expect of a 105-year-old company of British craftsmen. The happiest revelation about the new V8 Vantage is that Aston Martin has created a car that incorporates all its heritage, yet is a cracking, up-to-the-minute sports machine that looks stunning in a way completely different to all its rivals.

MORE MCLAREN

McLaren broadens its appeal with the first proper GT model. WORDS CHRIS NIXON

THERE’S A STRONG CLUE to the intended market for a new car when the manufacturer boasts the boot will fit a set of golf clubs. This news might please some residents of the Gold Coast and Brisbane who have been aching to buy one of those fine British McLaren sports cars, but haven’t because there was nowhere to put the clubs. McLaren’s latest model, the GT (for Grand Touring), indeed has plenty of room behind the seats. And with a deep bin in the nose, it becomes the first McLaren to offer storage space at front and rear, an impressive 570 litres all up. To optimise this space in keeping with the car’s style, buyers can order an optional fourpiece set of custom-made luggage. Each to his own, I suppose, but if I owned a McLaren GT I wouldn’t be wasting it carting sticks and balls.

82 covemagazine.com.au

– Issue 75

I’d be seeking quiet, fast roads and exploring the car’s own sporting ability … which is immense. The GT – not to be confused with the earlier McLaren 570GT – is the maker’s first car properly in the Grand Touring style; that is, a coupé able to carry two people and luggage comfortably and swiftly on a long journey. Available to order now from $399,995 list for delivery in a few months, the GT’s point of difference is that the car’s performance hasn’t been compromised by the emphasis on comfort and practicality. It will still rocket from rest to 100 kmh in a road-blistering 3.2 seconds and hit a top speed of 326 kmh (providing the golf clubs are safely secured). Power comes from McLaren’s own twin-turbo, 4.0-litre V8 producing 455 kiloWatts, the same as the 600LT model although presumably re-tuned to deliver in a less-frenzied manner.

The GT has just been unveiled and isn’t available yet to drive, but McLaren promises general refinement and ride comfor t are improved. The interior certainly is less spartan than more-sporting McLarens and is fitted with comforts and conveniences such as electricallyadjustable seats, a light-sensitive glass sunroof, Bowers and Wilkins audio system and knurled aluminium controls. Outside, the GT displays re-styled nose, tail and flanks that give the car a smoother, more sophisticated appearance than its siblings. The car I viewed at a function in Sydney was a handsome thing. With more discreet looks, upgraded comfort and refined dynamics, the GT deserves to attract a new class of buyer to the McLaren brand. It will be worth looking out for.

TOP END OF

TOWN Resilience of luxury home values.

WORDS NICK NICHOLS IF THERE WAS ANY DOUBT that property markets are not created equal, then the latest snapshot of how the top end of town is performing puts this into perspective. While the property downturn in Australia has dominated headlines for more than a year, the performance of the luxury homes market has been largely overlooked. However, a quarterly survey tracking the movements of luxury home prices globally shows that the top 5 per cent of properties have been doing much better than the broader market. It also shows that at least three Australian cities are tracking well above the global average. The index also offers some encouraging news for luxury home buyers on the Gold Coast which, for the first time, has made it into the latest Knight Frank Prime Global Cities Index. The index previously tracked the performance of upmarket properties in 45 cities and expanded it to 46 to include the Gold Coast in its June-quarter analysis. The index ranks cities around the world according to the strength of their luxury property market. While Europeans dominate the latest list, Australia is definitely punching above its weight on a global scale. There are five Australian cities in the index with the Gold Coast sitting at 27 behind Sydney (18), Brisbane (20) and Melbourne (21). Perth rounds off the Australian cities at 32. While Brisbane beat Sydney in the ranking in the March quarter after coming in at 14th spot, the Gold Coast’s inclusion in the Q2 index has been a talking point for the market. The Knight Frank Prime Global Cities Index noted the depth of the Gold Coast’s luxury home market and its ongoing stability, as well as the ‘solid pipeline of new projects catered towards affluent local and interstate downsizers’.

Sydney and Melbourne improved their positions in the June quarter this year thanks to a steady recovery in those markets. Along with Brisbane, these three markets actually outperformed the global average of 1.4 per cent price growth over the past year. Sydney posted gains of 2.5 per cent, Brisbane 2.2 per cent and Melbourne 2.1 per cent. Luxury homes on the Gold Coast recorded 1.1 per cent growth, still better than the business hubs of Singapore and Mumbai. The global average remains significantly below the four-year average which the index says reflects volatility in the broader global economy. The global index has been in positive territory since 2010, although it has been trending lower each year since peaking in 2013. However, against the backdrop of property price falls across the Australian market, the latest Prime Global Cities Index demonstrates resilience in the luxury property sector. Berlin topped the list with a gain of 12.7 per cent and there were 11 cities showing price falls including New York, London, Auckland and Vancouver. While the luxury market continues to tick along, there is a chance that the broader southeast Queensland property market may start playing catch-up over the next two years. CoreLogic-Moody’s Analytics Australia Home Value Index Forecast in June is expecting Gold Coast home values to edge 2.8 per cent higher in 2020 and surge 4.5 per cent in 2021 following a fall this year. It is also tipping Brisbane values to lift 1.4 per cent next year and 2.9 per cent in 2021.

OWNER TESTIMONIAL To escape the bitter Victorian winter, Melbourne couple Michelle Gray and Michael Burstin purchased their own piece of paradise high up on level 38 of Chevron One. The couples’ four-bedroom sub-penthouse spans almost 250sqm, including almost 80sqm of balcony space, and offers outstanding northeast views of the Nerang River, Surfers Paradise and beyond. “The apartment itself is just magnificent; its views, design, the size of sweeping balconies and the amenities,” Ms Gray said. Space and outlook were important considerations for the couple who were attracted to how the interior of their apartment blended seamlessly with its generous balcony area and spectacular city vistas. They also appreciated the building’s emphasis towards owner-occupiers. “When we heard that the developer’s family will be residing there on levels 39 and 40, we knew it was the building for us,” Ms Gray said.

The couple also appreciated the fact that it’s an easy stroll to the beach, as well as to local cafes, restaurants and retailers. There is a limited number of sub-penthouses in the tower, each with three bedrooms all with ensuites and a fourth or ‘flexi’ bedroom, which could also serve as a study thanks to sliding doors opening to the living area. The master bedroom comes complete with a walk-in robe and an ensuite with freestanding bath. Designed by award-winning celebrity chef Shannon Bennett, the entertainer’s kitchen has two ovens, a double sink, integrated Miele appliances, five-burner cooktop, and plenty of storage space. The kitchen blends with an open-plan living area and expansive outdoor entertaining space with sweeping views of Surfers Paradise as its backdrop.

AGENT PROFILE

COVERING THE COAST The professional team at Amir Mian Prestige Property Agents are experienced in all facets of Gold Coast property.

WHEN IT COMES TO BUYING AND SELLING REAL ESTATE on the Gold Coast, Amir Mian Prestige are the go-to property agents. “We cover the entire Gold Coast, which sets us apart from a lot of other agencies,” explains Principal Amir Mian. “One of our agents can be selling a property in Tallebudgera while another can be negotiating a deal in Hope Island. “And we handle properties from the lower end of the price-range all the way to the top,” he says. “Hence when people are downsizing, upsizing or looking for investments, we are the one-stop shop for their real estate needs.” A true professional with an enviable record in the property industry, Amir delivers a competitive edge to all his clients. He achieved the highest sale on the Gold Coast last year and had more prestige sales in the top 50 homes than any other agent on the Gold Coast. “Our focus is clear – we are dedicated to delivering you with uncompromised professional

service through our highly motivated and experienced team.” In fact, Amir and his hard-working agents offer a refreshing blend of energy and experience to present logical and effective solutions to all your property needs. “We have noticed there are quite a few vendors selling on the northern end of the Coast and moving to the central or southern end and vice versa and that is where we are very well positioned with one office in Paradise Point and the other in Southport. “We are also opening another office in Broadbeach shortly. This way not only will we sell everywhere, we will have our offices in each zone of the Gold Coast as well.” The professional team at Prestige Property Agents provide advice in all aspects of real estate including residential sales, prestige homes, project marketing, commercial, industrial, hotels and leasing. They pride themselves on being up-to-date with all things relating to real estate, such as

suburb trends, the ever-changing legislations associated with property, and the latest figures. “We also specialise in Hinterland acreage properties and development sites,” Amir says. “We have brought buyers from the Coast who would have not gone to those hinterland properties if we were not the agents, which gives these sellers an edge over the local agents there. “And we have noticed quite a few high-end sellers are also involved in developments on the Gold Coast and we often come across buyers who also want to look into development opportunities. “Once again, we bring these buyers directly to the sites we have listed which might not happen if we were not dealing with these buyers.” Combining all these points of differences, together with a dynamic Sales and Rental team who are experienced in all facets of Gold Coast property, allows Amir Mian Prestige Property Agents to achieve outstanding results throughout the entire region and beyond.

AGENT PROFILE

PASSION FOR PROPERTY Specialising in Sanctuary Cove property, Harcourts Coastal agent Glenys Pitkin believes hard work and honesty are the secrets to her success.

GLENYS PITKIN, from Harcourts Coastal, has turned a life-long interest in property and design into a very successful real estate career. “I have always loved real estate and that meant a lot of moves for my girls when they were children as I combined my passion with my design background and bought, renovated and sold property,” Glenys explains. “My girls have always said as soon as the paint dried, they knew we were on the move.” Having worked in the furniture industry in Melbourne for 20 years, Glenys’s first foray into real estate was over two decades ago. Since then, she has followed her passion, forging a very successful career and becoming one of Sanctuary Cove’s most sought-after agents, although there were a few detours along the way. Just prior to moving to Queensland Glenys joined a prestige Melbourne company, Jellis Craig, as an agent, which is where her passion for real estate began. Moving to Sanctuary Cove in 2000, Glenys continued her interest in renovating but decided to fulfil another lifetime dream and bought a restaurant. She owned Café St Tropez, which was an icon in Sanctuary Cove in those days, and also had several other restaurants including Café Nineteen in The Marine Village and a new restaurant on Ephraim Island which was then called Darcey’s. After a long busy working life and raising a family, she took a couple of years off to travel and concentrate on her restaurants, only to find she really wanted to be back on the Coast and selling real estate in Sanctuary Cove. Having returned to the Harcourts Coastal team, Glenys continues to combine her love of both real estate and Sanctuary Cove Resort. “I believe honest communication and being supportive and dedicated to my clients has held me in good stead in my working life and I am proud to say I have sold well over $350 million worth of property in Sanctuary Cove,” she says. “I love the resort, lifestyle and security it offers; it is not hard to sell something you love.” As a long-term Cove resident, Glenys is perfectly placed to show clients the benefits of the master-planned community. “I always say my first job as a real estate agent is to be a tour guide of the resort so potential buyers can fully appreciate all we have to offer,” she says. “Once they fall in love with Sanctuary Cove, as we all have, we can find the perfect home for them.” Over the years Glenys has made many friends among sellers and buyers and has helped a lot of them several times with their real estate needs. “I consider myself a specialist in the resort, and I have the knowledge and the passion that is required to be a successful agent selling real estate in Sanctuary Cove. “I love being back, I love the lifestyle, I love my job and that is proven by my recent results,” she says.

Global fabric and textiles business, Ailanto Design by Amanda Ferragamo, recently launched two new collections in Europe, US and for the first time, Australia. The Kili Collection hosts three designs, in three central colourways, with an additional Animal design, inspired by Brisbane designer Keeley Green’s nostalgic childhood in Africa and the nomadic culture and symbols of the Masai people whom she visited in June 2018. Inspired by Keeley’s childhood spent in historic Bundaberg, the Australia collection is made up of the main Daintree design, as well as the Weave design in three complementing colourways.

POLO IN THE CITY

International player, Mariano Gracida, gallops into Brisbane to play in the Land Rover Polo in the City series.

LAND ROVER POLO IN THE CITY is considered one of the most glamorous events on the Brisbane social calendar and will again deliver its unique blend of fashion, entertainment and athleticism at Dorrington Park on Saturday, 23 November 2019. The star attraction at this year’s series is professional polo player and heartthrob Mariano ‘Nano’ Gracida who will lead Team Hawaii against the Australians. Nano carries the proud heritage of four generations of champion polo players and skilled horsemen with his grandfather, his father and his uncle achieving the ultimate in a 10-goal rating. He is the youngest son of the late Carlos Gracida, a Mexican-born polo legend and one of the most celebrated players in the history of the sport.

116 covemagazine.com.au

– Issue 75

More significant than Carlos’s trophies was instilling in his sons – Nano and his elder brother Carlitos – the belief that polo is as much about creating a sense of community, being generous with your time, socialising and having fun, as it is about competing. Now in his mid-20s, Nano has already made his own mark in the sport and is looking forward to what will be his first visit to Australia. “It’s on my ‘bucket list’,” he said. “Everybody I’ve met from Australia is extremely friendly, and I can’t wait to check out the wildlife and the beaches. “We want to reach out to a new audience to ring a bell that polo is a welcoming sport,” Nano said, determined to continue the tradition established by his great-grandfather, Gabriel Gracida Sr in the 1920s.

The day itself promises to be the social (and networking) event of the year. Blending the elegance and style of a 5-star picnic, along with a front-row vantage point for compelling competition, guests can mingle with players, VIP’s and celebrities, stomp the divots, savour the fashion, and soak up the ambience. There will be two games, the famed divot stomp, prizes for men and women in Fashion on the Field, and the men’s and women’s dash – always a much-anticipated part of the program. Guests arrive at 11.00 am and the fun at the polo field ends at 5 pm, and then it is on to the after party to continue the celebrations. Polo in the City also offers a range of hospitality packages to allow you to make the most of your experience.

Somerset Storyfest Business Lunch presents 2019 Joint Australian of the Year Drs Richard Harris SC OAM and Craig Challen SC OAM. Enjoy a delicious meal and join the long-time cave and shipwreck divers as they share their emotional and exceptional Thai cave rescue story

Coming to QPAC, Chicago has everything that makes Broadway great: a universal tale of fame, fortune and all the jazz; one show-stopping song after another; and the slickest dancing in town. Starring Natalie Bassingthwaighte as Roxie Hart, Alinta Chidzey as Velma Kelly and Casey Donovan as Matron ‘Mama’ Morton, Chicago’s sexy, sassy score includes hits such as All That Jazz and Razzle Dazzle. It would be a crime to miss it.

To coincide with the release of his Sunset Suburbia project: a trilogy of EPs leading into an album in 2020, Australian singer/songwriter Diesel will hit the road once again playing The Triffid, Brisbane on 15 October and Southport RSL on 16 October. With his powerhouse band, Diesel will showcase hits and fan favourites spanning 30 years of music making.

SCORPIO 24 Oct – 22 Nov

You’ll enjoy boosting your daily circumstances. You may feel more outgoing and sociable as the summer approaches. A new social circle, group or organisation may appeal. A fresh work contract could arise, so take the initiative with your projects. But if progress seems slow in November, take the time to enjoy relaxing and avoid pushing for results. They will arise in good time.

CANCER 22 Jun – 23 Jul

SAGITTARIUS 23 Nov – 22 Dec

ARIES 21 Mar – 20 Apr

You’ll experience a refreshing change of atmosphere at home, with family and within your general activities this Springtime. Projects you must complete will nevertheless need attention. Your plans will come together as you develop a fresh daily work or health routine. Love could blossom at this time, too, so plan a treat and, if you’re single, you may meet an unexpected match.

LEO 24 Jul – 23 Aug

A surprise or delightful event will be uplifting around the full moon on October 14. Be open to opportunities: a fresh domestic or work circumstance could boost your status. The next two months will enable you to reconsider many of your activities, and to decide how best to proceed. You will gain the opportunity to turn a corner in your personal life at the end of November.

TAURUS 21 Apr – 21 May

VIRGO 24 Aug – 23 Sept

AQUARIUS 21 Jan – 19 Feb

GEMINI 22 May – 21 Jun

LIBRA 24 Sept – 23 Oct

Consider how best to divide your energy between those you love, work and practicalities. The new moon on October 28 will encourage you to nurture your projects. A trip or a project that broadens your mind will open doors. Be prepared to follow your intuition, as it will guide you. Avoid cajoling others to agree with you; they eventually will, but of their own free will.

The upcoming months are favourable for working Taureans and, if you wish to improve your health you’ll get the chance to move ahead now too. You should feel more settled as a result. There is also a romantic tone, especially in mid-October, when a romantic treat will be ideal. The Taurean full moon mid-November signifies the chance to turn a corner in your personal life.

In October, you’ll gain the opportunity to change dynamics in your home life, family and/or a property. Developments may arise due to changes at work or with your chosen projects. You are on the threshold of breaking into new territory, so seize the day! You’ll appreciate the chance to reconsider decisions and to reunite with important aspects of your past in November.

Be prepared to make fresh agreements, especially at work and regarding your health and happiness. Consider making fitness a part of your schedule as key changes regarding your wellbeing will drive developments in your daily life and activities. A fresh approach to your status and direction may involve unexpected developments that encourage you to reach for your dreams.

Your daily activities may be driven by financial needs but when you take into account your values and the importance of being fulfilled, your activities will flourish as you organise more time for your priorities. It’s important over the next two months to base decisions on facts. You will have the time in November to reconsider your circumstances, so avoid feeling pressured.

October and November are ideal for taking the initiative with your projects, and to find ways to create a solid base and structure such as a financial budget and personal wellbeing. You may even be surprised by collaborations and news that comes out of the blue. Avoid over-committing financially in November; you may not gain the returns on investments until December.

Avoid subscribing to the sense that some things in life can’t be changed. You have free will and your ability to research your options and make valid decisions will be productive. Mars in Libra will boost your energy levels and self-confidence, enabling you to accomplish a great deal. You may feel nostalgic or the return to an old haunt and a reunion will appeal in November.
