Providing personalised, professional service, Pavéction studio specialises in creating bespoke jewellery for discerning clients. HAVING HONED HIS SKILLS training with some of the most prestigious jewellery masters in Europe, Designer Jeweller and Specialist Diamond Setter Robert Bellamy is now offering Pavéction clients the benefit of his vision and experience. “I’ve spent many years living between Australia and Europe studying specialised European setting techniques,” Robert says. “Using that knowledge, I’ve been able to perfect my individual style and technique to achieve the perfection that hallmarks Pavéction as a prestige atelier.” Welcoming new and existing clients to Pavéction’s private studio in Brisbane, Robert provides a bespoke service for those looking for unique, highlypersonalised jewellery. “Unlike many other artisans, we take a forwardthinking approach to ensure our clients receive a quality piece with true value, both as an investment and as a personal item of jewellery,” Robert explains. “I really enjoy the creative process and take great pride in walking them through the entire project, from choosing the diamonds to the final design, so they are 100 per cent happy with the outcome.” Known as the ‘Picasso of Diamonds’, Robert combines a mastery of traditional jewellery techniques with a fastidious eye for detail. He also uses the latest technology, such as microscopes for precise gem setting and finishing, laser techniques, and CAD design, to ensure Pavéction pieces are second to none. DRIVING

AMBITION

After four decades of rockin’ and rollin’ and the sale of 135 million albums, Bruce Springsteen could afford a fleet of limousines, yet his car collection is as modest as the man and as blue-collar as his music.

WORDS NICK RUFFORD / THE SUNDAY TIMES / THE INTERVIEW PEOPLE SINCE BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN’S 1973 debut album – Greetings from Asbury Park, NJ – cars have helped to power his lyrics, often as a metaphor for escaping smalltown America. “[Cars] continue to be, for me, resonant and romantic and I think the idea of a journey is always compelling to people,” he says today. “The image of driving is just very evocative for people. “It’s a geography that I like to say all people carry inside them. “Those images are images that people have internalised through films and travel over the years.” Stashed away in outbuildings on his 300acre farm in New Jersey are ‘a few American cars from back in the day’. By that, he means some beautiful American classics from the 1960s and ’70s – plus some motorcycles, including British machines. He tinkers when he gets the chance and uses them as often as he can.

22 covemagazine.com.au

– Issue 76

“I have a garage full of cars that I’ve collected over the years,” he says. “They’re not collector’s pieces; they’re what I call drivers. I have my original Corvette. I’ve got a ’69 Chevy. I’ve got a Cadillac. I’ve got an old pick-up truck. I’ve got a small collection of older American vehicles that I get in and drive once in a while.” Most of the cars have a story to tell. The 1960 Corvette is on the cover of his autobiography Born to Run. The ’69 Chevy features in one of his bestloved songs, Racing in the Street. In classic Springsteen style, it’s about a man trying to escape from his problems and his mundane life by racing cars at night. The singer is also an aficionado of twowheeled machines, a passion he revived later in life. He’d stopped riding in his teens after being concussed in an accident when a ‘63 Cadillac T-boned his small Yamaha in 1967. >>

“I started riding again in my thirties,” he says. “So for the past 30 years I’ve put together a small collection of bikes in my garage. I have one vintage Triumph Trophy and a Thunderbird from ’94. I’ve got a more modern Triumph, a kind of a souped-up Bonneville. And I’ve got a new Norton 961 Commando. Then I have my old Harleys.” The singer also keeps some modern 4x4s for getting around his property. “Just for daily drivers we have Jeeps – Cherokees – and a Range Rover,” he says. In Western Stars, a feature-film companion piece to his recently released album of the same name, Springsteen says: “We still live a lot of our lives, here in America, in cars, just trying to get from one place to another. “I suppose 40 years ago they were a potent metaphor for open roads and freedom. Over the rise, around the bend, into the future. And to settle the spirit sometimes.” The film shows the star in concert, not in his usual stadium setting but in an old barn on his ranch.

24 covemagazine.com.au

Between songs we see clips of Super 8 footage of a younger Springsteen, and sequences of him against a backdrop of big skies and wild horses. He provides the voiceover, summoning up homespun philosophy about life and love, struggle and reward. Some of the homilies are delivered from the driving seat of an antique Chevrolet El Camino as he travels through a parched landscape in Joshua Tree national park. Given that his music is so deeply rooted in car culture, it’s all the more surprising that he wrote those early songs when he didn’t have a licence and barely knew how to drive. Now 70, he jokes he was something of a fraud in those days, composing lyrics about cars when he didn’t own one and singing about factory work when he’d never done a day’s manual labour. His first experience behind the wheel was so hair-raising it’s surprising it didn’t kill off his affection for automobiles – not to mention Springsteen himself.

He took turns driving a friend’s truck on a three-day journey from New Jersey to Big Sur in California. The ancient wagon had a dilapidated gearbox, but he and his bandmates had been booked for a gig and couldn’t afford to turn it down, even though it was 3,000 miles away. He recalls in his 2016 autobiography: “I just drove – no licence, no permit, no experience. “The truck was an old manual shift. You had to clutch, shift, clutch, shift, the engine begging for mercy.” He still couldn’t drive when he toured with the E Street Band in 1973 to promote Greetings. “Everyone but myself took turns driving. “I still had no licence and my style behind the wheel was considered inept and reckless endangerment by the band.” Even when, in 1974, he wrote Born to Run, the album that shot him to international stardom, he still owned no car. He bought his first the following year, aged 26, for $2,000. >>

It was a 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air convertible, with flame detailing on the bonnet and a ‘Hurst on the floor’ (echoing the lyric in Racing in the Street about that kind of gear lever). As album sales took off, he could finally afford the set of wheels he’d always wanted, buying it in New Jersey from a worker at an ice cream stand. “Born to Run had earned me a Steinway baby grand piano and a 1960 Chevrolet Corvette I bought for six grand from a kid behind the counter,” he recalls. He was delighted when, as a thank-you gift for writing Gary ‘US’ Bonds’ comeback hit song This Little Girl, Bonds bought him a classic 1963 Chevrolet Impala convertible, another American land yacht. So in love was he with Americana – and cautious with money – that for years he wasn’t interested in buying a new car. He records in his memoirs: “I’d never owned a new car in my life. For that matter, I’d never spent $10,000 on myself. Still, I bit the bullet, rode down to the dealer and drove away in a 1982 Chevy Z28 Camaro. I felt as conspicuous as if I were driving a solid gold Rolls-Royce.” Even after he’d bought it, he still hankered after the old classics: American barges, redolent of long, straight roads stretching across the desert towards the horizon.

26 covemagazine.com.au

– Issue 76

When he acquired a house in the Hollywood Hills, he needed a car to cross the continent, so he bought a 1969 Ford XL ‘with a white ragtop, sea green and Cadillac long’. It was the perfect road trip car with Jack Kerouac On the Road cool, he recalls. Only when he started a family with Patti Scialfa, a singer with the E Street Band, did he succumb to a more practical form of transport – a minivan – for transporting his children, Evan, Jessica and Sam. Indeed, he would often ferry them and their friends to sports matches, along with their kit, sometimes to the surprise of other parents, who would do a double-take when they saw a rock star acting as taxi driver and roadie. Cars also feature in the lyrics of his latest album, his 19th, although the singer admits that these days they have lost some of their power as a symbol of freedom and escape. “At best, they are a metaphor for movement,” he says. “When we’re in a car we can feel like we’re always moving forward. But are we moving forward? A lot of the time, we’re just moving.”

COVER STORY

TIME TO SHINE

For 165 years, Hardy Brothers have been one of the most revered names in Australian jewellery.

28 covemagazine.com.au

– Issue 76

WITH AN UNWAVERING commitment to artisanship, precision and design, Hardy Brothers’ has been adopted by some of the most notable members of society, as well as celebrities, politicians and the Royal Family. THE EARLY YEARS Established from humble beginnings in Nottinghamshire, England, Hardy Brothers’ reputation for quality quickly made a mark. John Hardy was the youngest son of a clockmaker who was determined to make a better life for himself. His entrepreneurial spirit drove him to Australia in 1853, where he established his jewellery trade at his new home on Jamison Street, Sydney. Two years later Mr Hardy expanded his venture by establishing his first bricks and mortar showroom called ‘Hardy Brothers’ on Hunter Street, Sydney. His winning combination of luxury, innovation and quality quickly gained attention with many gathering at the store to glimpse the latest in European design. Due to their high standard in creating quality, luxurious jewellery, Hardy Brothers was the first jeweller in the Southern Hemisphere to obtain the Royal Warrant in the late 1800s. As the only Australian business to be awarded this mark of excellence, and still retain it to this day, Hardy Brothers have served all sovereigns since George V, including the reigning monarch, Queen Elizabeth II. MODERN DAY HARDY BROTHERS Today, Hardy Brothers is one of Australia’s largest family-owned and operated luxury jewellers, operating five retail boutiques across Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and the Gold Coast, As a traditional luxury jeweller, Hardy Brothers has developed a unique understanding of the modern-day woman and continues to craft fine jewellery with an assembly of award-winning master jewellers, gemmologists and gold and silversmiths. Spending an entire summer in Europe delivered a world of wonderful experiences.

Johnstown Castle, Wexford

WORDS RHONDA OXNAM ANYONE WHO HAS CONTEMPLATED, or completed, an extended overseas trip will be well aware of the planning required. Flights to book (in our case 11 in total), destinations to choose (I ended up visiting 13 countries in 14 weeks) and a host of accommodation options to consider … not to mention taking care of all the everyday logistics back home. But having recently returned from spending an entire summer in Europe, I can honestly say it was all worth it. With plenty of family and friends in Wexford, Ireland, we decided to make this beautiful seaside town our base for the entire 3½ months. It was also just a quick two-hour drive up/ down the motorway from Dublin Airport, which became our gateway to the continent. Our first mini-break was Italy, where we discovered the joys (not) of driving a manual car on the opposite side of the road and navigating in a foreign language.

42 covemagazine.com.au

– Issue 76

Having made our way to Sestri Levante, on the Mediterranean coast, we spent three glorious days thawing out in the Italian sunshine, exploring the nearby tourist Mecca of Portofino and indulging in a delicious selection of red wine and seafood. Another terrifying road trip and we were in the Tuscan hills where we had been invited to join some friends at their summer home in the quaint village of Chianni. Again, food and wine were the order of the day, while attending an evening of opera in the local theatre was a real treat. The Marriage of Figaro, sung in Italian, by Italians, in Italy … it doesn’t get more magical than that. We also spent a pleasant few hours exploring the sites of nearby Pisa (yes, the tower is still leaning) before boarding an early morning flight back ‘home’ to Ireland. The next adventure on our itinerary was a coach tour through Spain and Portugal.

There was so much to see and do during the 14-day trip but the standout would have to be the Sagrada Família in Barcelona. Impressive from the outside, Gaudi’s most famous project is absolutely breathtaking once you get inside. I can’t even begin to describe the sense of calm you feel as you walk through the doors. Add to this the towering grandeur of the architecture and the rainbows of stuninng stained glass and you have a truly spiritual experience. A word of warning, tours to this masterpiece book out weeks in advance so if you are planning a visit make sure you organise tickets asap. Honourable mentions also go to the Porto (the birthplace of fortified wine and supposedly where J.K. Rowling was inspired to write the Harry Potter books); Santiago de Compostela (this medieval town is the finishing line for many pilgrims walking the Camino de Santiago route) and Madrid (busy, cosmopolitan and so much fun).

Sika·Design® HANDMADE FURNITURE

Sagrada Familia, Barcelona

After another three-week break back in Ireland it was time to hit the road again. My husband is a keen bike-rider (and I am not) so while he met up with a couple of Aussie mates to conquer the Alps, I headed to into Dublin proper for a few days sightseeing. I love, love, love this city. So welcoming, so much history and so easy to get around. I snuck in a day trip to the Giant’s Causeway and Titanic Belfast before flying to Munich where I joined another organised tour to tick a few more things off my bucket list. Budapest … check; Prague … done; Vienna … although I’d been there before it was well worth a return visit. I almost squandered the highlight of this leg of the journey but luckily my fear of missing out overcame my fear of heights and I signed up to do the optional Eagle’s Nest excursion. Perched high in the hills outside Salzburg, this Third Reich-era building was used exclusively by members of the Nazi Party for government and social meetings and can only be reached via a series of twisting one-way roads and tunnels. >> Issue 76 – covemagazine.com.au

LUXURY ESCAPES Now a seasonal tourist spot, the sense of history and the views from 1,834m above sealevel were nothing short of spectacular. Ironically, Hitler was allegedly both acrophobic and claustrophobic and only visited the site a handful of times. With many stories to share, I re-joined Derek in London, our last stop before returning to Australia. Being the height of summer, the city streets were hot and busy but I found as oasis of calm in the gardens of Buckingham Palace where I enjoyed a spot of afternoon tea after touring the state rooms. Again, tickets are extremely limited so book early to avoid disappointment. Looking for a night’s entertainment, we decided to bypass the West End to take a dinner cruise on the Thames instead. It proved a very good choice, with live music, delicious dining, amazing views and no selfie-obsessed tourists in sight. Of course, we also spent many enjoyable days making friends and discovering the delights of Wexford. As a sports fanatic, the opportunity to attend a live hurling match was definitely a highlight, while Derek would probably say being made an honorary member of local bike-riding group, the Wexford Wheelers ranked right up there. One of the other wonderful things about the Emerald Isle, is that every town, village or city has its own history, its own heritage-listed buildings and its own charm. In our case, Hook Lighthouse, Johnstown Castle, Loftus Hall (the most haunted building in Ireland) and the Irish National Heritage Park were just some of the sites within an easy drive. Google any, or all, of them and you will realise how lucky we were. We also had several friends from Australia join us at different stages of the trip which limited the homesickness and allowed us to create some great memories to share now we are all back home. One thing that did disappoint was the lack of time we actually got to explore Ireland so we are in planning mode again … I think a 2021 driving tour is looking like the perfect option.

CUISINE

A FOOD JOURNEY

There’s so much more to Irish cuisine than potatoes and beer (although the Guinness Storehouse in Dublin is definitely worth a visit).

WORDS & PHOTOGRAPHY MARJ OSBORNE WHILE FOOD was only one of the reasons drawing us to the Emerald Isle, we discovered an abundance of fresh produce and memorable experiences on our recent trip, even though we barely scratched the surface. Here are some great food-related reasons to visit Ireland: TO DISCOVER OUR FOOD HERITAGE As Australians, we feel a strong connection to Ireland. And why shouldn't we? About two million people, or 10 per cent of the Australian population, claim Irish heritage. Famine ships and emigration museums across Ireland give insight into the country’s history. While many political factors exacerbated the severity of the Potato Famine, reliance on one crop as food for many Irish people led to great vulnerability when the crop suffered blight from 1845 - 1849.

46 covemagazine.com.au

– Issue 76

Through death and migration, the population of Ireland dropped 25 per cent during the famine, reducing from an estimated 10 million to 4.7 million today. TO MEET FOOD CHAMPIONS The Fáilte Ireland food tourism initiative aims to get visitors to Ireland to 'stop more, spend more and stay longer'. As well as designating tourist areas (Ireland’s Ancient East, Dublin - A Breath of Fresh Air, and the Wild Atlantic Way) they have appointed Food Champions – chefs and people in the food industry who can promote new food tourism experiences. We met Niall Sabongi, food champion and restaurateur, at the intimate Klaw: The Seafood Cafe, where we had lunch. His message is all about freshness and sustainability: juicy oysters complete with

documented provenance and tasting notes, seafood chowder filled with local leeks and pippies, and citrus breaded Arklow plaice. "We are an island nation surrounded by seas and amazing seafood," he says. On a cool, blustery summer’s day, we stopped at Linnane's Lobster Bar for lunch (one of 30 Irish pubs listed in the Michelin guide), looking out over the inlet. The town lies in view outside one window ... the fishing boat and cray pots out front ... and soon the cray arrived unadorned on our plate. Life couldn't be better. TO MEET THE MAKERS AT MARKETS Some restaurants, such as Market Lane in Cork, feature their food suppliers on menus, shining the light on provenance and fresh local produce, but there’s no better place to meet makers and suppliers than at local markets.

FOOD TRUCK

FESTIVAL

In existence since 1788, the English Market in Cork is regarded as one of the best in Ireland. Under cover in a mid-18th-century building, providores sell the best fish and meat in the area, with the market hosting many famous visitors, including the royals. Galway Market, a bustling street market, has been trading in Church Lane by St Nicholas' Church in the centre of the city for centuries. You will find hundreds of stalls selling fresh produce such as vegetables, flowers, plants, seafood and seaweed, and locally produced crafts. TO VISIT EXCEPTIONAL SPECIALTY GROCERS Specialty grocers scattered across Ireland, such as McCambridge’s in Galway, bring a rich choice of produce to consumers. We visited Sawers Ltd., founded in 1897. Named by the New York Times as one of the five best stores to shop at in Belfast, it's a cornucopia of delight for foodies. Originally a seafood shop, the range extended to cheese, and now carries a huge selection of food from throughout Europe. Having trained under the famous Tommy Black, owner/ manager Kieran Sloan gave us a little tour and potted history. Kieran's attitude to us, street walk-ins, is indicative of the business attitude he engenders in his staff: Service is king. TO TRY OLD AND NEW CLASSICS The Slow Food movement reminds us that heirloom plants and traditional recipes are worth preserving. We saw all that and more in Ireland: deliciously nutty lamb's lettuce (which we rarely see in Australia), traditional Irish dishes such as a 'Full Irish Breakfast’ with black pudding; soda bread, Irish stew, boxty, colcannon, bacon and cabbage, as well as traditional cooking methods: fires fuelled by peat, and hand-cut chips accompanying fried fish and brown bread. With an emphasis on familiar food, gastropubs source local ingredients to give diners a real taste of Irish cuisine in casual surroundings. You could tour Ireland by its pubs, all in the name of research. Other places are keen to put their own twist on classic dishes. We sought out a Michelin-star restaurant, Ross Lewis' Chapter One in Dublin, to try new classics: Fricassee of rabbit with morels, parsley and parmesan, Lambay crab pancake with peas and cherry blossom vinaigrette, and Cod with white asparagus, pickled sweet kelp, Connemara cockles and brown butter. TO VISIT THE BIRTHPLACE OF GUINNESS There are many distilleries in Dublin and, while whiskey is high on our priority list, Guinness is higher. In 1759, Arthur Guinness signed a 900-year lease on the property to begin his brewery. Still housed there, in the oldest continuously operating factory in Dublin, the Guinness Storehouse is a 'must visit’ attraction, hosting 10,000 visitors a day. Spread out across seven levels with interactive displays and educational films with brewing well-explained for the novice, there's even a restaurant featuring dishes cooked with Guinness. Upstairs, there's Guinness on tap to be enjoyed with a view of the city. Sláinte. Issue 76 – covemagazine.com.au

WINE CELLAR

EARTHY REDS

Koomilya Vineyard is producing modern day reds using old school methods.

WORDS TONY HARPER THERE’S A SMALL PATCHWORK of vineyards that lies in Upper Tintara, about five kilometres to the north east of the McLaren Vale township, and it has made some of the most beguiling, celebrated wines from the region ... a few of them legends. One block was planted by Thomas Hardy in 1871 and remains in the hands of his great-great grandson, Andrew Hardy; its wines (all two of them) are peddled under the Ox Hardy label. A fence separates the Hardy vineyard from another, now named Koomilya, currently residing in the hands of Steve Pannell, one of the most talented and thoughtful wine men in the country. The vineyard origins are slightly murky, but it’s assumed it first sprouted vines sometime in the 1850’s. In recent years it has belonged to Don and Jill Cant, and it has been a major component of some stellar wines like Eileen Hardy Shiraz (most notably I guess, the 1995 which won the 1996 Jimmy Watson Trophy: the most prestigious red wine trophy in Australia). Next to the track winding in to the vineyard is an almost bare paddock, once planted to vines: the source of the classic Hardy’s vintage ports. And there I am, ten o’clock on a bright, sunny Tuesday morning sipping 1975 Hardy’s Special Release Vintage Port from an enamel mug and standing in Koomilya, just a spit away from the vineyard that produced it.

50 covemagazine.com.au

– Issue 76

As well as giving me a rather early buzz, it gives context to the land on which I’m standing and a glimpse into its history. It’s also a reminder of how special this patch of vineyards is. What a peculiarly good start to the day. I’m there to tread my shoes over the Koomilya vineyard and put tactile and visual experience on to the organoleptic. Dotted around the vineyard are small tables with wines – current and older –from each particular patch so we can stand surrounded by vines, and sip the wine that they made. If we rewind a couple of decades, we find Steve Pannell working as Chief Red Winemaker for BRL Hardy: his were the hands that crafted that extraordinary 1995 Eileen Hardy Shiraz. And it was then that he fell in love with the vineyard that he now owns. He has made a few changes, some to the farming of the vines, others to the ecology – removing wild-growing olive trees and other invasive plants from the creek-banks and letting the native flora redeem its space, including some gorgeous native spider orchids. It’s a tedious process, but where the olives have been cleared there is a return to what the land must have looked like before humans got their hands on it and wreaked their own special kind of havoc.

Most of the Koomilya wines to date have been either Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, or a blend of the two. But now there’s a Tempranillo Touriga blend in the family. These are two grape varieties that ooze a sort of exotic black cherry fruit and Christmas pudding. But here there’s an interplay between that bouncy fruit and a quite formidable, savoury structure. And it’s this savoury element that takes the wine out of frivolous territory into something far more intended and serious. It’s a brilliant wine. What’s an homogenous description for McLaren Vale Shiraz? Full-bodied, rich and plush for sure. But also – especially when talking about the better, more expensive examples – amplified by oak. Not so the Koomilya wines. Steve has a belief that oak muddies the waters that flow from vineyard to glass. And when a vineyard is as ancient, as proven, as special as Koomilya, why would you mask its attributes with something as domineering as oak character? So there are no barriques and no new barrels of any kind in the Koomilya story. Instead large (2700 litre) ‘foudres’ are used, so the impacts of living in oak (a gentle transfer of oxygen; a settling; a softening) are there without the addition of oak flavours.

The results are apparent. All of the wines share common traits that come directly from the land ... not from the winery. The 2015 Koomilya D.C Block (named after Don Cant; there’s also a J. C. Block for Jill) has all the density and power we all expect from McLaren Vale Shiraz in a red-earth meets dark-berry kind of way. But rather than the hit of vanilla and raw timber that so often comes along with it, here it is antique-shop and building-site – more savoury, less interrupting. It’s a theme and a personality that runs through the whole Koomilya family. We taste a 2015 Koomilya Shiraz – no particular block, but an amalgam of many – and it has hit its sweet spot in an entrancing, expansive, multilayered way. It’s probably set to be the least long-lived of the bunch, but even so I can’t see it failing until well after I do. And goodness, it is fabulous. The top wines – D.C. Block and J.C. Block Shiraz, and C. P. Block Cabernet Sauvignon –are less fleshy, and more structured; they are destined for long lives. But more important than mere longevity is the way they express their origins ... vintage, earth and aspect. And I’ll hang out on a limb and say that these wines are doing that job in more convincing fashion than anything that has come from the vineyard in the past. Which, when it comes down to it, is completely due to the vision and understanding of its current custodian ... Steve Pannell.

Motorline BMW Celebrating 21 Years

AT THE WHEEL

OLD IS NEW

The classic collectable car market is attracting thousands of enthusiasts around the world.

WORDS CHRIS NIXON

THESE PAGES usually cover the latest and greatest in the car world, but it will be a sure bet more than a few readers also fancy themselves in something a bit older and even more exclusive. The world of classic collectable cars is large and specialised. It covers everything from a $5000 Morris Minor from the 1950s to handmade Italian thoroughbreds worth millions. For some, a classic is a better investment than property, shares, art or jewellery – and you can have fun with it. A Gold Coast enthusiast I know converted the proceeds of a business sale into a carefullycurated small collection of 70s Aussie muscle cars, one of which attracted an offer of more than $1 million. He’s not alone. There are Queenslanders with millions of dollars worth of rare and desirable machines of all types. Classic car clubs prosper, sporting events such as the Historic Leyburn Sprints on the Darling Downs attract thousands. The Coffee and Cars movement is also growing.

64 covemagazine.com.au

– Issue 76

Enthusiasts bring their cars to a suburban parking lot, usually for a couple of hours early on a Saturday morning. They’re informal, unorganised events, but every one attracts an eye-opening display. Eye-opening? That’s not only because the cars are great. It’s also because you’ll be surprised these cars are even in our midst, hiding in garages during the week and venturing out to preen and canter at these regular gatherings. Google-search Cars and Coffee and you’re sure to find one near you. If you want to join the classic car movement, there are plenty of ways. Organised auctions, such as those staged regularly by Lloyds Auctions on the Gold Coast (lloydsauctions.com.au) and Shannons nationally (shannons.com.au), are a great place to start. As in real estate, these auctions are an accurate means of determining market value whether you’re buying or selling. Lloyds handles all makes but appears to specialise in Australian and American machinery. Shannons offers a more diverse choice.

The most recent Shannons auction in Sydney showcased a tempting array. How about a chic Italian 1960 Autobianchi Bianchina Trasformabile sedan, an upmarket clone of the Fiat 500 Bambino? Yours for an estimated $25,000 - $35,000. Or a four-wheel drive 1973 Haflinger 700 AP, from Austria and one of few examples left in Australia. With a two-cylinder engine, weight of just 600kg, all-wheel drive, locking differentials and long-travel suspension, the Haflinger will outclimb anything and offer fun and exclusivity for as little as $10,000. You’ll pay almost twice as much for a new, basic Hyundai. For an estimated $20,000-$25,000 you could buy a futuristic Citroen D Special once owned by the family of famous Australian artist Pro Hart. D Series Citroens are an infallible investment and one with a celebrity connection should be worth even more. Meanwhile, if your budget is more modest, put your hand up for either of two classic pedal cars offered with no reserve – a circa-1950s Jeep or a 1960s CCMC Custom Coaches Manufacturing

Company pedal car – each expected to bring an affordable $300 - $500. Lloyds’ recent offerings have included numerous Holden Monaros, plus a Torana A9X, 1978 Ford XC Falcon Cobra Coupe, 1970 Dodge Charger RT 440 Magnum, 1923 Ford T Bucket hot-rod ute and a 1966 Austin Healy. Like art or jewellery, you can spend as much as you want on a classic car. Ferraris and Porsches, especially, are almost guaranteed investments although there’s a wide price difference between the two makes. Porsches priced less than $100,000 in Australia are increasingly hard to find, but a rare Ferrari sells on the global market no matter where it is housed. A record Ferrari auction price was achieved in 2018 at RM Sotheby’s annual collector car sale in Monterey, California – $US48.4 million. That bought a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO owned by former Microsoft executive Greg Whitten. A Ferrari 250 GTO Berlinetta sold for $US38 million in 2014 and a 1957 Ferrari sold for $35 million in 2016. >> Issue 76 – covemagazine.com.au

AT THE WHEEL

Ferraris are gold and, like the mineral metal, they’re guaranteed to get more expensive over the long term despite occasional market fluctuations. A new type of classic called re-creations is a way to buy a slightly – only slightly – more affordable version of a much-desired model. They’re also fail-safe money-makers for manufacturers. It’s already too late if you fancy one of 12 factory re-creations of a 1929 4.5 litre supercharged Bentley Birkin. The price is ‘on application’ but apparently enough enthusiasts didn’t even need to ask, because the run is sold out already, ahead of its 2021 release. You might have better luck with the Aston Martin DBZ Centenary collection, although be prepared to stump up six million pounds to buy a package of not one, but two, new Astons.

66 covemagazine.com.au

– Issue 76

The first is a limited-edition of 19 continuations of the 1960s Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato, a model once raced in Australia and presumably sold secondhand for a price that would not seem like a pittance. The Zagato is one of the most revered Aston Martins and, being hand-built from computerscanned copies of the original, will likely be reserved for special outings only. But you could get out more frequently in the second part of the DBZ Centenary collection, a DBS GT Zagato. This car is as modern as the DB4 GT is traditional and makes the most unique offering in today’s classic market – two brand-new cars of impeccable pedigree. If a slinky Jaguar E-Type is more your taste, there’s a modern solution in the form of the electric version, as used by Harry and Meghan after the royal wedding.

But exclusivity doesn’t always mean fun. Many enthusiasts will have just as much enjoyment from an old Holden or the car that starred in Shannon’s iconic TV ad for insurance – yes, the Dart. There’s one for sale currently in an Australian enthusiasts’ magazine for $15,000. Fun and selfie popularity are guaranteed. We'll return to our regular program in the next issue with a car that's already fabulous and certain to become a classic in time, the McLaren 600LT Spider. Its $500,000 plus on-roads would buy a shed-full of more humble classics.

INTRODUCING IN-SIDE Extracted from the earth, technologically sculpted.

PRODUCED BY THE WORLD LEADERS in porcelain technological innovation – Laminam, and exclusive to ace stone + tiles, IN-SIDE is the first series of porcelain slabs offering material continuity between body and surface. IN-SIDE is based on the mixture of natural raw materials with variable grain size which results in a textured blend, typical of natural stones. This stems from the company’s desire to reproduce the textural quality typical of Italian natural stone on large sized slabs, re-claiming materials such as Piasentina, Porfido and Cordoso stones which have all been used in architecture for thousands of years. The biggest challenge was to create slabs that possess the same profound spirit as the natural materials that inspired them, whilst ensuring the historical origins of the stone were left untouched. Drawing inspiration from these natural elements, the design team then focus on capturing shifts in society to create contemporary and innovative colours and finishes. An important component in reproducing this range was keeping true to the sustainability and longevity of product in design: the sustainability of the manufacturing processes are important features to the Laminam range. The requirements of the porcelain slabs: excellent resistance to external stresses such as scratches, impact, chemical products, humidity, heat and UV rays, work together with the hygienic quality and ease of cleaning. The porcelain slabs are composed of natural raw materials that are carefully selected and processed using efficient, sustainable, eco-friendly technologies, all within a highly automated production process. In addition to the superior technical performance levels, which are far above those of materials more commonly used for horizontal surfaces, the new IN-SIDE product further accommodates the styling requirements of the world of furnishings, thanks to the uniform aesthetic styling between body and surface, even after the necessary processing to achieve the finished product. Natural raw materials, purified by water, are given a new lease of life in the form of a hard-wearing surface, which stretches up to 1620 x 3240mm with the appearance of genuine natural stone. To view the new IN-SIDE range, contact ace stone + tiles on 07 5493 3344.

RECOVERY Regional Queensland and Brisbane are shaping up as growth areas over the next three years.

WORDS NICK NICHOLS IT’S THE PROPERTY DOWNTURN the market had to have, and now the signs are pointing to a modest recovery. However, according to QBE’s Australian Housing Outlook 2019-2022 report, the downturn has left a legacy that may dictate the shape of the recovery over the next three years. The report, which is prepared by BIS Oxford Economics, gives a fairly robust view of the national market heading into 2020, but it warns that a pullback in construction activity over the past two years could lead to pockets of undersupply. Sydney and Melbourne may be showing signs of an upswing in activity, but QBE sees limited upside in these markets in the near term. Brisbane is forecast to be the best performing capital with a median house price gain of 20.3 per cent in the period to 2022. The next strongest is Adelaide with forecast growth of 12.7 per cent. This compares with 5.8 per cent and 5.1 per cent for Sydney and Melbourne respectively.

76 covemagazine.com.au

– Issue 76

The report found a decade of ‘modest price increases’ has left the Brisbane market relatively affordable. “An oversupply in the market is negatively impacting prices, but it is predicted that a combination of rising population growth and rapidly falling supply will see this situation turn,” it says. “With the Queensland economy also forecast to strengthen, residential price growth is forecast to steadily accelerate through to 2021-22.” With regional markets gaining favour in recent years, QBE’s forecasts for key regional cities provides the best insight into where property opportunities may lie. In Queensland, the analysis points to Townsville with a forecast of 10 per cent median house price growth over the next three years, followed by Gold Coast at 8.8 per cent.

Cairns (8 per cent), Toowoomba (7.5 per cent) and Sunshine Coast (7 per cent) round off the top five in the state. The standouts elsewhere are Newcastle (10.7 per cent), Launceston (9 per cent), Ballarat (7.6 per cent) and Bendigo (7 per cent). On a national scale, these figures show that regional Queensland and Brisbane are shaping up as prime growth areas over the next three years. However, the forecasts in QBE’s Australian Housing Outlook report have been set against a backdrop of lower construction activity and diminishing supply on a national scale.

Building approvals across the country were down 19 per cent in 2018-19 and completions are expected to fall to 163,500 dwellings by 2020-21, which is 22 per cent lower than the five-year average. “With population growth expected to remain strong, that’s well below underlying demand,” says QBE Lenders’ Mortgage Insurance CEO Phil White. “This could mean some previously oversupplied markets will tip back into undersupply by 2021-22. With other factors also stimulating the economy, and by association the housing market, there is potential for a recovery in prices.” While Reserve Bank of Australia’s deputy governor Guy Debelle warns the construction downturn could last longer than expected, he says steady population growth and record low interest rates should lead to increased activity by 2021. But that may not be enough to stem price growth.

“The long lead times on higher-density construction mean the supply response is likely to be slow,” says Mr Debelle. “The tight conditions on lending to developers may mean it is even more protracted. The growth in demand without a meaningful supply response will lead to a larger price response.” Mr White says the supply imbalance is a recipe for volatility that could lead to even bigger price gains than forecast by the QBE report in some markets, such as Sydney, over the next three years. “This discrepancy between current demand and the timing of future supply is likely to result in greater volatility and upward pressure on property prices,” says Mr White.

“Given these factors, the report’s forecasts for the Sydney market may be on the conservative side and we would expect that pockets of this market could see sharper price increases sooner. “At the same time, while forecasts for the Brisbane house market point to solid growth, and the fundamentals do look very strong, there is a risk that consumer caution and oversupply of units could temper these projections.”

THE FUTURE IS NOW

Smart Home technology is changing the way we live, work and relax.

WORDS JESS GOLDING TECHNOLOGY is a major part of our everyday lives and it is advancing at an incredible rate. Created and marketed as a modern-day essential – new gadgets, apps, products and innovations are launched daily. So what about the technology in our homes? What is a ‘smart home’ and what do smart homes look like in 2019 and beyond? Queensland smart home builders Scott Leppier and Darren Frearson from Homes for the Future explain the future of housing and technology in Australia. Let’s start at the basics. What is a smart home? Well, a smart home put simply is the integration of everyday living and technology. Imagine you’re just leaving work. Its been another glorious summer’s day in Queensland and you know you have left the curtains open and the air-conditioning is off. What we do when we build homes is integrate technology into your home so you can close your curtains, switch on the lights and make sure the air-conditioning is perfectly balanced; either at a certain time or on-demand from your smartphone. Pretty cool, right? Smart home technology also means that you can look and talk to someone at your front door from your phone, you can tell your vacuum robot to start cleaning, tell your pool cleaner to start sweeping, ask your electronic pet feeder to give your dog a treat … in fact you can make almost any home function, a smart home function. Why build smart homes? We are fascinated with technology and often early adopters of the technology ourselves. With over 20 years of experience in the building industry, we noticed that more and more our clients were asking us about integrating the new emerging technologies into their homes.

78 covemagazine.com.au

– Issue 76

To differentiate ourselves in the market, we focus on building homes for the future. For us – it really is about the client. And that means building homes that our clients love and homes that are designed for this generation and the next. Our homes are designed and built to last the test of time and evolve as technology does too. Building homes with the future homeowner in mind is a key driver in our designs and technology considerations, always thinking ahead of the game. We have all seen television shows and movies set in the future, The Jetsons for example. How do you see shows like these inspiring the technology we see in homes today and into the future? That’s a really interesting question because you’re right, film and TV influence the expectation of what a home in the future should be. Some things are very likely and others are flights of fancy. Star Trek gave us automatic sliding doors and the flip phone, but of course, we are not yet flying from galaxy to galaxy fighting Klingons. But we do have video phones, robotic vacuum cleaners, auto-sensing lighting and temperature control, driverless vehicles, multi-view televisions, home cinemas, virtual reality video and interactive talking digital assistants, all of which have been predicted in numerous TV shows and movies. We are really excited about new technology and what is to come but for us, our focus really starts with the client; what they want and how they want to live. Design, quality and technology are three words that sum up Homes for the Future.

We have seen the new release of the Homes for the Future Oscietra Smart Home. This looks like a landmark project. Oscietra is the newest member of our family. And yes, it is a landmark project for us. The Oscietra is a limited-edition, fully customisable smart home with floor to ceiling glass living, generous entertaining areas and a sunken poolside lounge. Oscietra is an iconic and outstanding home for 21st-century living. Every Oscietra home we build includes an electric car charging point, smartphone control for your air-conditioning, six additional userdefinable smartphone controllable points (expandable to 72), a spacious master bedroom suite and a glass observation window into your garage to display your prized motor vehicle. Tell us a bit more about Homes For the Future. Homes for the Future is a specialist new home builder with expertise in smart home technology. Originally formed by Scott as ‘Queensland Platinum Homes Pty Limited’, the company very quickly earned a reputation for building quality homes, for reliability and for his attention to detail and quality finishes. The complete retirement package There’s a certain something special about living at Palm Lake Resort. For some, it’s the luxury abodes that ooze comfort and style in a multitude of clever designs. Depending on your chosen location, we’ve got light and bright, single and double storey options, while other designs offer convenient RV garages for those ‘toys’ that make the retirement years so much fun. While there are move-in ready options at most locations, you can put your own bespoke touches on your home by choosing some of your preferred finishes and fittings when buying off the plan. For others, it’s Palm Lake Resort’s class-leading facilities and myriad activities that really sprinkle magic on our community lifestyle resort option. Our latest multi-million-dollar Country Clubs offer luxuries like tropical resort-style pools (with matching indoor pools to boot), pool bars, fire pits, saunas, spas, tenpin bowling alleys and plush movie cinemas. Championship undercover eight-rink lawn bowls greens, with their own clubhouses, are magnets for everyone from the more competitive players to those chasing a social roll (and a giggle as well!). With residents’ health and wellbeing a priority for Palm Lake Resort, we also hold the exclusive rights among over-50s communities in the Southern Hemisphere to the futuristic Europeandesigned Milon gymnasiums, making workouts a user-friendly, quick-and-easy breeze. The other bonus with choosing a Palm Lake Resort is the warm and welcoming community that comes with it. different resident population. There are musicians and artisans, craftspeople and sportspeople, for example. There’s loads of fun to be had with your likeminded neighbours and many new and unexpected friendships to be made. While our communities offer great social connections, there’s also a certain feeling of security on offer when living among friends in a gated community. In fact, security is something that truly rounds out the Palm Lake Resort offering. While there’s a tangible sense of security in each of our locations, there’s also the security of investing in the Palm Lake Group. Family owned and operated for more than 42 years, our company supports families in 35 residential resorts across Australia’s east coast. In fact, 11,000 people call Palm Lake Group home. Having been crowned the number one performers in Ray White Queensland for five years running, as well as ranked third in international circles, these consummate professionals credit their clients as the secret to their incredible accomplishments. “We are determined to achieve the absolute premium possible price for the vendor, regardless of market conditions,” Julia reveals. “In all we do, we aim to deliver tangible results and make the sales process as stress-free as possible.” “Our reputation for outstanding sales success in a competitive and challenging market is so important to us,” Sam adds. “Matching the ideal buyer with the perfect property is a privilege, and we remain determined to exceed expectations in all we do.” And while they are justifiably proud of the reputation they’ve earned as exacting strategists, master negotiators and outcome-focused agents, it’s the trust they have had instilled in them by clients which matters most. “We have worked tirelessly to create a reputation built on trust,” Sam confirms. “We’re focused on cementing long-lasting relationships which continue well after the sold sticker has been put up.” Born in China, Sam came to Australia as a student in 2002, and after attaining a Masters Degree in Business Administration, he directed his energy and outgoing personality into real estate. Before long he was securing record-breaking property sales, and eventually partnered with Julia, who is originally from Taiwan. Together, this award-winning duo combines Julia’s cheerful, helpful attitude and flair for effective marketing with Sam’s drive and optimism, resulting in premium results in sought-after suburbs including Sorrento, Isle Of Capri, Benowa Waters, Paradise Waters and Clear Island Waters. Renowned for their strong ties with the Asian community, both here and overseas, this not only broadens the potential buyer base but breaks down cultural barriers. They’ve also enjoyed many strong referrals from previous happy vendors, who have been impressed with the sale result, but also the friendly, enthusiastic approach Sam and Julia display. The pair are also keen listeners and possess a genuine passion and knowledge for real estate, which also works to benefit their clients. Partnered with the national strength of the Ray White network, Sam and Julia are looking towards the next twelve months with excitement. “2019 was the year we showed our resilience in a tough market,” Sam says. “In one period, we sold seven luxury properties in just 21 days, and we’re anticipating an equally successful 2020.”

MORE THAN THE LAW Family lawyer, community advocate, art aficionado – Jason Murakami’s reputation precedes him. A PARTNER at Southport-based law firm Behlau Murakami Grant ILP, Jason Murakami is known as the lawyer you bring in if you want your matter settled. In a legal career spanning more than 22 years he is one of the State’s most experienced solicitor advocates having been the lead solicitor for many highprofile matters such as Pauline Hanson’s successful Appeal against her conviction, the successful defence of former Gold Coast Mayor Gary Baildon and the successful defence of former Gold Coast Deputy Mayor David Power. He also led NRL star Greg Bird’s successful appeal against his criminal conviction and the successful $30 million class action proceedings against the Queensland Government for the Palm Island riots. “Family Law disputes are an exercise in psychology,” said Jason. “Determine the opposition’s drivers and you have found the key to settling a matter.” The Adjunct Professor of Law, who was educated at Aquinas College in Southport, is a strong advocate for non-emotive litigation against other family lawyers. “Unlike other legal jurisdictions, the current family law system does not produce a winner and a loser. It unfortunately only produces degrees of negative outcomes for both parties,” he explained. “The quicker the dispute is over the less cost to both parties, the less emotional cost for both parties and the less negative impact on children. “That is why the modern practice of family law is about reducing the areas of discourse between the parties and creating an environment to achieve a negotiated outcome,” he said. “Family lawyers arguing for the sake of arguing and sending letters back and forth about issues which do not affect

the ultimate outcome is the outdated way of practicing family law. The market is becoming acutely aware of this.” Mr Murakami took great pride in designing Behlau Murakami Grant’s new offices at Southport. Looking more like a Surrey Hills art gallery than law practice, the stunning premises boast works by artists such as Robert Dickerson, Ray Crooke, Charles Blackman, Sidney Nolan, David Bromley and Abbey McCulloch. “My partners Ron Behlau and Shane Grant are energetic supporters of the local community,” Jason said. “The decision to build our law firm so it could double as an art space that young artists could use for first-time exhibitions at no cost to the artist was an easy proposition.” As part of his efforts to further give back to the community, Jason continues to teach young lawyers at the Griffith University Innocence Project which he co-founded in 2001 after attending the internationally renowned Cardozo Law School in New York. “At last count I believe I have now taught over 1000 young lawyers since I became involved in the Project almost 20 years ago.” he said. “It’s great to see that many of my past students have gone on to become some of the State’s leading lawyers.” As a member of a sixth-generation Gold Coast family, Jason is excited about the future of the Gold Coast and where the city is heading. “This city has come a long way since my grandfather Junzo Murakami, a Japanese immigrant, bought the Scottish Prince hotel in Southport in 1904,” he said. “He would be proud of how the Gold Coast has matured.”

Homeworld Helensvale welcomes a host of new tenants to the Dining Quarter and GC North Medical Hub.

SANCTUARY COVE AND HOPE ISLAND RESIDENTS will be able to work, live and play within the local catchment thanks to a new $25m development at Homeworld Helensvale. The recently completed Dining Quarter and GC North Medical Hub will allow medical specialists, retailers, hospitality providers and professionals to cut the commute and base themselves from Homeworld’s high profile location. Leasing Executive, Joe Prescott, advised the new development was the latest in the long-term masterplan for the property. “Homeworld Helensvale opened in 2008 and is now considered the largest and most successful mixed-use, large format centre on the Gold Coast,” Joe explains.

“The centre currently boasts 60 tenants and attracted over 1.8 million visitors over the last financial year. “This latest stage will offer a range of much needed services for the surrounding area including a state-of-the-art Queensland X-Ray clinic, Artisan Aesthetic Clinics, Medxperts and other modern specialist health p rov i d e r s i n c l u d i n g p o d ia t r y a n d dental services.” Joe advised that the GC North Medical Hub in particular provided a unique leasing opportunity for those looking to achieve the perfect work life balance. “Homeworld is now uniquely positioned to offer tenants a site that can’t be found anywhere else on the Gold Coast,” he says.

“The property boasts easy access, attracts high traffic and is in the prime growth corridor of the Gold Coast’s northern suburbs. “This, combined with the lifestyle offering of surrounding Hope Island and Sanctuary Cove, makes a base at GC North Medical Hub a very attractive opportunity.” Planning is already underway for three more future stages at Homeworld which will include a further 25,000sqm of showroom, retail, medical and leisure tenancies.

LOOK BEYOND THE BANKS FOR BETTER RETURNS

MAKE THE SWITCH & ENJOY A HIGHER RETURN

LOW RATES HAVE TAKEN THEIR TOLL

HOW SEDLEY KOSCHEL FINANCIAL GROUP CAN HELP

The RBA has held the official cash rate of interest at an alltime low of just 1.0% and thousands of Australian investors, including retirees, self-managed superannuation funds (SMSFs), companies and individuals, are now left stranded earning less than 2.0% on their idle cash. For many investors the fall in rates over the past 8 years has led to: • less retirement income to live off • fewer family holidays • reduced discretionary spending • downsizing of the family home • …and in many instances financial distress We have heard of these frustrations and many more at Sedley Koschel Financial Group (SKFG).

NON BANK INVESTMENTS OFFER A POSITIVE ALTERNATIVE

For many, earning a low rate of return on your idle money is neither desirable nor sustainable, particularly given that inflation is currently higher (1.6% per annum) than the cash rate (1.0% per annum). Investors are now forced to look for alternatives to keep ahead financially and maintain their lifestyles. Otherwise they risk going backwards by doing nothing. Low interest rates have resulted in much-needed innovation within the financial services industry to fill the gaps left by the banks. Non-bank alternatives have created wide opportunities for investors and companies.

BENOWA

If you are considering making the switch to a non-bank alternative to achieve a better return on your idle money, remember that all investments carry a level of risk and you should be comfortable with the investment strategy of the company you choose to invest with.

SKFG is a dedicated boutique financial services group with offices in Hope Island, Benowa and North Queensland. We specialise in providing investors with holistic advice into incomegenerating investment products to help them keep ahead in the low rate environment.

CREATING WINNING INVESTMENT STRATEGIES

Whether you choose to move your money to us or another alternative, interest rates appear unlikely to increase for some time. We are big believers in creating win-win outcomes for our investors as we have considerable ‘skin in the game’ with over $200 million under advice. Our team strategically selects investment portfolios that suit your needs. Robert Koschel explains everything very well so you can make a decision with confidence. He was very insightful, providing us with different investment options, explained what the returns would be and the likely outcomes for each. And he let us make the decision, which is what we wanted. CURIOUS ABOUT KURIOS? Cirque du Soleil returns to Brisbane with a breathtaking new Big Top and a much-acclaimed touring show.

IN JANUARY 2020, KURIOS – Cabinet of Curiosities will premiere under a brand-new white-and-grey Big Top in Northshore Hamilton, bringing with it all the Cirque du Soleil magic that Queenslanders adore. Written and directed by Michel Laprise, this acclaimed touring show is a tale in which time comes to a complete stop, transporting the audience inside a fantasy world where everything is possible. In this realm, set in the latter half of the 19th century, reality is quite relative indeed as our perception of it is utterly transformed. In a place where wonders abound for those who trust their imagination, a scientist (‘The Seeker’) is convinced there exists a hidden world – a place where the craziest ideas and the grandest dreams await.

112 covemagazine.com.au

– Issue 76

Out of his curio cabinet steps a collection of otherworldly characters made up of world-class acrobats, contortionists, hand-puppeteers, yo-yo wizards, clowns and musicians. Together they turn the Seeker’s steampunk world upside-down as they are guided by an energetic gypsy jazz, electro swing soundtrack. KURIOS FACTS • KURIOS – Cabinet of Curiosities is Cirque du Soleil’s 35th production since 1984. • C abinets of curiosities are the ancestors of museums, also known as cabinet of wonder in the Renaissance Europe. Aristocrats, members of the merchant class and early practitioners of science formed collections of historical relics, works of art or mysterious travel souvenirs or artefacts.

• The cast of 46 artists come from 16 different countries. About 60 per cent of the artists have already worked with Cirque du Soleil before. • All performers are responsible for applying their own make-up every show, which can take them between 40 minutes to two hours. • Rima Hadchiti, the artist who plays Mini Lili, is 0.9-metres tall and weighs 18.6 kilograms. She is one of the 10 smallest people in the world. • To make the Accordion Man’s attire, the costume-maker spent an entire week sewing inside the costume. • It took the team of props makers approximately 250 hours to build Mr. Microcosmos’ round belly. • The mechanical hand weighs 340 kilograms and measures 4.6 metres by 1.8 metres.

December will kick-start a busy phase. The big news is the eclipse season, with a solar eclipse on December 26, and lunar eclipse on January 11. These eclipses will put a fresh hue on your projects and plans moving forward, with a change in direction, especially at work. You may receive key news in January that signals a turning point both in your interests and status.

Events over the next two months will encourage you to reach for the stars. Some Aquarians will find this eclipse season empowering; others challenging. Either way, you will feel motivated to pursue activities both at work and in your personal life that resonate with you more deeply. You may ask: do I wish to move forward or stay in a situation merely out of sentimentality?

The full moon in Gemini on December 12 will enable you to turn a corner in your personal life. A sociable time mid-December will be enjoyable, and you’ll appreciate the opportunity to engage in some of your favourite activities or projects that truly enhance your self-esteem. Mid-January it’s time for some serious financial re-organisation or a fresh approach to a partnership.

You are loyal and are also a romantic. And, while this serves you well when you are in a steady circumstance, you can feel life is topsy-turvy when you sense the winds of change. Over the next two months, a new group, new friends or fresh work circumstances may appeal. Avoid allowing nostalgia to prevent you from making a leap into a fresh field. Be prepared to lead.
