“A note to thank yourself and your team for your assistance in arranging a medivac for my Sue from Hong Kong in January. Also, for your advice and assistance to reschedule our planned cruises in Europe, and the Caribbean later this year. You and the CT ladies have done a great job for us and also for our friends, who we referred with confidence to Cove Travel some years ago. “

“During this unprecedented upheaval due to the coronavirus, it certainly has been very comforting to have Cove Travel looking after the negotiations with our travel company to cancel/rearrange our fully paid for overseas travel arrangements. Thanks so much to the entire team, it’s been great to have you on our side.”

“I have been booking with Cove Travel for some years and have always had outstanding service and amazing attention to detail. My expectations have always been exceeded with travel, accommodation and various forms of transport, and transfers have never presented a problem. I will continue to book with Cove Travel and refer any of my friends who require help.”

“A big thank you to you and your colleagues for your success in rearranging our forthcoming travel plans. Transferring our SilverSea 35day cruise to next year, without any penalty, was a great relief to us, as well as the credit for our airline flights. We could not have achieved this without your assistance. How lucky we are to have a competent travel agent looking after our needs.”

“I wouldn’t trust my travel plans to anyone but Cove Travel. They have excelled in helping plan my adventures in many countries for the past 12 plus years. Even when we are far away, Cove Travel are with you to iron out any hiccups. This agency and its staff are the best on the Coast. Nothing is too much trouble and they go ‘above and beyond’ to make sure your travel plans go perfectly.”

“Alpha-H can’t speak highly enough of the Cove Travel team. Not just in times of travel turmoil (as we are experiencing with COVID-19), but for ALL of our executive business travel needs. They never fail to provide us with great options and expert advice. The customer service and attention at Cove Travel is first class and we know we are in very skilled and capable hands.”

We also bring you the inspiring story of local media personality Brooke Lowther. In 2021, Brooke will take part in the National Breast Cancer Foundation’s Trek to Tuscany, walking 100 kilometres in 6 days and hoping to raise $100,000 for research along the way. Of course, you would have already noticed our gorgeous cover featuring the very beautiful Mel Britton and a stunning Maritimo yacht. Shot at Sanctuary Cove (with thanks to many of the local retailers who supplied the clothing and jewellery) this image really does capture our Marine Dreams. This theme continues in the Luxury Boating section, where you will find more high-end boating and brokerage. If cars are more your thing, we have an expanded At the Wheel showcase as well. Oh, and I almost forgot, our feature interview is with Hollywood hero, Harrison Ford. Enjoy and take care.

Wittmann’s handcrafted furniture has a modern character, easy confidence and timeless quality that harks back to the origins of early modernist design. Designed by Jamie Hayon for Wittmann and made in Austria, the Vuelta armchair is characterised by unusual proportions that see the backrest rotate playfully around the seat to become a voluptuous armrest that embraces the occupant. The special shape is divided by expertly crafted seam patterns inspired by Josef Hoffann and Viennese Modernism. Also designed by Jaime Hayon, is the sculptural Grain Cut side table made from a solid block of wood. Domo is the exclusive retailer of Wittmann.

Winning partnership

Harcourts Coastal have become Official Real Estate Partners of the Gold Coast Titans. The partnership will see Harcourts Coastal appear in the front-of-shorts sponsor position on the Titans’ on-field kit for the next two years. Harcourts Coastal Managing Director Dane Atherton has been a Titans supporter since the Club’s inception in 2007, and said coming on board as an official partner of the Titans was a good fit for two organisations serving the Gold Coast community. “What I’ve seen early on in the new leadership of the Titans is an energy and clear direction which aligns to the beliefs of Harcourts,” he said. “As businesses based on the Gold Coast, we are in a fortunate position to play a role in strengthening the club. It’s about getting behind the city, and supporting something we are passionate about that resonates with our staff and clients.”

ANSWERING THE CALL From his heroics as Indiana Jones to his latest role in a remake of The Call of the Wild, Harrison Ford is one of Hollywood’s most popular and prolific actors.

WORDS IZUMI HASEGAWA / THE INTERVIEW PEOPLE HE HAS STARRED in some of the most iconic movies of our generation, however, his latest role playing opposite a computer-generated dog in The Call of the Wild challenged Harrison Ford’s acting skills. What was it like acting opposite a human playing a dog? That human was convincingly playing a dog, and it was fun. I hadn’t imagined quite how it was going to work … it seemed a little weird … but Terry Notary, who

22 covemagazine.com.au

– Issue 78

stood in for Buck the dog, is an accomplished actor and a gifted Cirque du Soleil gymnast. He developed the skill to move like a dog and to help everyone organise their eyeline, where they were looking. I also had the opportunity to create an emotional relationship with the character that Terry was playing. We crossed some biological lines to get there, but it became second nature. It did feel a little funny at first to be scratching him behind the ears, but he got over it and so did I.

As an environmental activist, what inspired you to work with this project? Well I didn’t take the project as an environmental activist. I took the project as a father, as a member of a family. It was a story that I thought would make a good family film. And the character really was developed beyond the character’s presence in the book to have a story that in many ways paralleled Buck’s story. >>

FEATURE While Buck is gaining the courage to accept the call of the wild, if you will, my character John Thornton is finding the courage to go back and assume his domestic responsibilities, to go back and face the complications of his life, which sadly he doesn’t get the chance to do. But the resolution is there in context to the relationship to Buck. I thought that was important and interesting and it was something we developed in the script before we started. It was one of my ambitions for one of our early rewrites, to strengthen that, and to focus that story. Certainly my disposition towards nature is a part of my personality, but I didn’t use that to motivate my choice of this film. I just thought it was going to be a good movie, be a good character, be an interesting challenge. It was also a very gorgeous film. What was your favourite scene to film? I don’t know that I can say that I have favourites. Every day you struggle with problems. For people that are making a film, we largely do all of our work ahead of time, and then we get there and we find we still have a lot of problems to solve. How do we motivate a move from one place to another? What’s a behavior that is going to generate this kind of feeling that we need? Why isn’t this line working? Is it a rhythm thing? Is there a word or two that’s missing or need to be removed? I mean it’s problem solving all day long, and that’s fun for me. That’s fun, that’s a challenge … and you do that in collaboration … that’s what makes it even more enjoyable for me. Connection? Yeah. In real life, what can you say you learned from Buck? From Buck? Buck is an example of an indomitable spirit. He is an invention but that spirit is in all of us, it’s in nature. The will to live, the will to reproduce, the urge to reproduce. Your biological destiny, and the inexplicable fate that awaits you. The mystery of it all. How about The Call of the Wild? What did you learn from that experience? The experience of working with a group of talented people that I’d never met before. Working together to bring something to life, a value to other people. The pleasure of my life is to continually be in the presence of challenges that the material and my own ambition makes for me. Because that challenge, that friction, that need to be useful to the process. To perform as it were. Not show off, but actually be there working and accepting the ideas from other people. Just the work. Work. Work is good. So what’s your spirit animal? My spirit animal? I know that this is a casual question, but in order to answer it, I would have to think about it. At this point of your life, what motivates you? What motivates me is what has always motivated me. The opportunity to wrestle with an intellectual problem. To take on the challenge without knowing if it’s going to work, but investing in it with others and trying to make it work. I love telling stories. I love hearing stories. I think stories are very important to our lives. >>

FEATURE

And the stories we tell ourselves are very important, the choices we make about the kind of stories we want to hear. Storytelling is a service occupation and if you want certain kind of stories, you’ll find them, if they are important enough to you. I mean they could be scratched on the wall of your cave, as originally stories were told. Pictographs in ancient times. This is a positive story about courage, spirit, commitment, affinity, empathy, and the power of nature. What other stories would you like to see on the movie screen? You know, I don’t think in a vacuum. I feed opportunistically. I’ve had the great luck over the years of having more than my share of opportunity but I don’t have a plan. My plan is to do the best I can with each job that comes my way and then reflect on that and go do something else. You’re an adventurous person, right? Well, I don’t know. You don’t consider yourself adventurous? Well, within limits. What are the most memorable adventures you think you’ve taken in your life? We like to take family trips and see not just cities, but cultures and nature and things that we are unfamiliar with. We took a 12-day family trip with some friends on the Colorado river through the Grand Canyon. Twelve days. No cell phones, no outside news, no contact with your life. Except the life that’s right in front of your eyes and that was amazing.

26 covemagazine.com.au

– Issue 78

The power and the majesty of nature, the geology expressing age and drama, and it’s just fantastic. And I just came back from a diving trip with my son and my wife in Bonaire, which is off the coast of Venezuela. Underwater, seeing the incredible natural world, and seeing damage to the reefs caused by fertiliser that flows off golf courses and lawns, and bleaching of coral because of the warming ocean. But you’re seeing the majesty of nature, you’re seeing the force of life. To me God and nature are the same thing. You can assign names to it, you can create valuable stories around it, but both of them, the essential thing is that, it’s the beauty. The power, the majesty of the intricate relationships between living things that is inexplicable without either God or nature. What is your new project? My new project is likely to be Indiana Jones, another Indiana Jones film. We’re looking forward to it. Is there any character or genre that you would like to do that you haven’t done yet? I don’t think in terms of genre or character. I think of the character in context of the story and I don’t much care about the genre. I care a lot about what the story says and then I want to find ways that that character can be useful in the telling of that story. Sometimes actors think about them as separate. I don’t. How do you hope this story inspires people to be better, to do more? I think that any emotional exercise, any opportunity to experience your common humanity with other people that you don’t know.

That don’t look like you, that don’t act like you, that think other things, that live other places. They’re a different colour or different instinctual behavior. That’s what makes us human. That’s what reminds us that it’s not just about us, it’s about all of us. You’re not into the Oscars or regular stuff that most actors pay attention to. Do you see acting more as a responsibility? I think of it as a job. As a great job. I mean who gets to do this shit [laughs]. It’s nuts, it’s crazy. I’m the luckiest guy in the world. I mean no, no. Not the luckiest guy. Brad Pitt is the luckiest guy. Usually you have to go to remote locations to shoot films but in this movie, you could stay in your own backyard. Is that a nice touch? It looked beautiful, I thought it was shot on location. I thought it was too because I was in the car for an hour and a half trying to get through traffic even though it was only 24 miles away. But yeah, that’s a rare circumstance. I love traveling to places and seeing the world and I’ve had the opportunity to do that. But I hadn’t really spent much time in Santa Clarita. It has its own virtues. What is your favourite part of the world? Wherever I am. I mean seriously, I like being home but it’s very exciting to see things you haven’t seen before. Smell things you can’t identify, see cultures that you haven’t participated in. Travelling’s fantastic. I enjoy it.

LOOKING GOOD

STEPPING UP Media personality Brooke Lowther will take on the Tuscany Trek in 2021.

100KM … 6 DAYS … $100K for the National Breast Cancer Foundation. To raise much-needed funds for gamechanging breast cancer research, media personality and business owner Brooke Lowther will take part in the National Breast Cancer Foundation’s (NBCF) Tuscany Trek in 2021. Brooke pledges to raise $100,000 as she walks 100 kilometres across the Italian countryside, with the money raised going towards NBCF’s goal of zero deaths from breast cancer by 2030. As an NBCF ambassador, Brooke wants to raise money for research in honour of her aunt who she lost to breast cancer, and three of her close friends who were diagnosed with breast cancer under the age of 40. “Over the past four years, not one, but three of my closest friends have been diagnosed,” Brooke explains. “When we are young, we think we are invincible. But, guess what? There is a lurking and growing disease possibly waiting to pounce. It is not just an older woman’s disease.” Brooke has been an NBCF ambassador since 2013. During this time, she’s taken part in the Mother’s Day Classic, been an emcee and host working with Channel 9 and Women in Super in Brisbane and hosted the 2019 High Tea by the Sea. “The main reason why I will continue to give my time to help NBCF achieve this goal of zero deaths by 2030 is that I no longer want to see the side effects and emotional scars that have affected my friends and their families. I would not want to wish that upon anyone else.

34 covemagazine.com.au

– Issue 78

“In addition to that, in 2030, when NBCF’s goal of zero deaths is achieved, I want my daughter (who will then be 22) and her friends to celebrate the success that made a difference to their futures.” Today, despite the advances made in research so far, there are still eight deaths from breast cancer every day, highlighting the scale of how much more work needs to be done. Breast cancer is also the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australia, with one in seven Australians to be diagnosed with the disease in their lifetime. This equates to 53 women facing a diagnosis each and every day in Australia. Given these alarming statistics, more breast cancer research is urgently needed to help fund a future for Australian women and save lives. NBCF Chief Executive Officer Professor Sarah Hosking says community fundraisers, like the Tuscany Trek, play a huge part in helping NBCF reach its determined goal of zero deaths from breast cancer by 2030. “Amazing and passionate supporters like Brooke enables NBCF to speed up gamechanging research to stop deaths from breast cancer and create a better tomorrow for those affected,” said Professor Hosking. “With the community’s help, we could fund 200-250 research projects over the next 10 years which will move us leaps and bounds towards our goal. “Research is taking less time to make breakthroughs, because of advancements in technology. This exponential opportunity in the research field underpins our road to achieving zero deaths by 2030,” she continued.

In 2021, Brooke will join a group of likeminded individuals who have come together for the Tuscany Trek to raise funds for breast cancer research. They will cover 100km over six days from Lucca to Siena, along the ancient Via Francigena walking route. Since 1994, NBCF has invested $181 million into 556 world-class research projects. The money raised from the trek will go towards research projects to help further understand risk factors, develop new ways to treat and monitor breast cancer, improve quality of life for breast cancer patients, improve treatment outcomes and ultimately – save more lives. “Given the number of women diagnosed with breast cancer every day, raising $100k for 100km seems small in the scheme of things,” says Brooke. “I have started training and will be sharing my progress and story on my Instagram page @brookelowther.” To show your support and help Brooke reach her goal, visit her fundraising page at:

MEET DEENA

Taking care of your eye health should be a priority, according to optometrist Deena Gad.

ORIGINALLY FROM DARWIN, Deena Gad holds a Bachelor of Vision Science/Master of Optometry. She is now part of the professional and experienced team at George & Matilda Eyecare on the Gold Coast. What do you enjoy about your job? I like talking to people and advising them about why they are experiencing the issues they have with their eyes. There are so many simple things you can do for your eye health that people aren’t aware of, and I enjoy helping them with that. I also love science, and the eye is such an intricate little machine, you wouldn’t believe how much happens in such a small organ. In addition to that, a lot of eye diseases have no symptoms, so a regular eye health screening is important for early intervention of certain eye conditions. What services do George & Matilda offer that other optometrists don’t? The great thing about George & Matilda is that if you break or damage your spectacle frames within two years of buying them, George & Matilda will repair or replace them for free. It’s a relief to know that if you’ve spent a good amount on a quality frame, you don’t have to worry about wasted money should you accidentally break them. Also, if your spectacle prescription has changed within three months of receiving your glasses, as noted by one of our optometrists, then the lenses will be replaced for free. George & Matilda recognise and celebrate that eyewear is a fashion statement, but they also acknowledge that it’s a medical device and you should get the most out of them. You have a special interest in orthokeratology. Can you explain a little more about that? Orthokeratology is the use of hard contact lenses that are worn during sleep to reduce the progression of myopia. Most people know myopia as shortsightedness – a condition where up-close vision is okay, but the distance is blurry. Orthokeratology is especially effective in children, and can reduce the progression of myopia by up to 40-50 per cent. It works by temporarily changing the shape of the front of the eye while you sleep, which has the added benefit of allowing you to see clearly

36 covemagazine.com.au

– Issue 78

in the distance without glasses or contacts during the day. You want to try and slow down myopia as much as possible, as certain eye conditions are more likely to occur with myopic eyes than others. Unfortunately, there is not yet a cure for myopia, however, orthokeratology isn’t the only way to slow down the progression. You can also use certain soft contact lenses and a formulation of eye drops as well. You also study ocular bionics and gene therapy. What are they and why are they a key area of interest? Ocular bionics is also known as visual prosthesis, and it’s aimed to restore visual perception in those with partial or complete blindness. Think of it as the combination of technology and our anatomy to create artificial vision. Using a video camera and tiny electrodes that are placed on or in the eye, or even along the nerve that connects your eye to the brain, you can see flashes of light that indicate the general size and width of an object or person. This helps those that are visually impaired to better navigate the world around them. At this stage, the image quality of ocular bionics isn’t that high and therefore won’t give you detailed information, but this is something that is continually in the works. Gene therapy, on the other hand, is about replacing a faulty gene with a working one and was initially geared towards trying to treat inherited retinal diseases. As of late, it has also been used in attempting to reduce the severity of more common retinal diseases such as macular degeneration. Several clinical trials today are developing and perfecting ocular gene therapy as a treatment for retinal conditions. What should patients be aware of when it comes to eye health? As I said, a lot of eye conditions can happen without you noticing. Glaucoma is one of those conditions, and the risk of developing it increases with age. Glaucoma in itself is when the nerve that connects your eye to the brain starts to thin out. That nerve is in charge of your peripheral vision, so when the nerve starts thinning, your peripheral vision starts reducing.

Because it happens so slowly, you don’t notice the change, so regular eye tests are important. There is no cure for glaucoma, but certain eye drops can slow it down, as well as some available laser/surgical procedures if the need arises. You should see an Optometrist to gauge how often to have your eyes tested. What have been some of the more recent developments/advances in eye care? I read a case a couple of years ago, about a 9-year-old boy who was born with a genetic retinal condition which caused him to be legally blind. In order to even see his food, he had to carry around a high-powered flashlight and use highpowered lamps for his day-to-day routine. He underwent surgery for a clinical trial for gene therapy and his vision had improved one day after surgery, and a month afterwards he didn’t have to rely on flashlights or lamps to see any longer. I can only imagine how amazing that would’ve been for him. In the article, his mum was describing how he was picking small details on his vision that we take for granted. I just like to think about where we will be 50 years from now, and wonder what medical advances will have been made for these conditions.

BETTER

YOU Now, more than ever, our health and wellbeing should be a priority. WITH THE WORLD in the midst of a pandemic, these are very uncertain times when it comes to our health. However, it stands to reason that the more we take care of our physical and mental wellbeing, the better equipped we will be to deal with the crisis. While some of our regular exercise regimes, such as group fitness classes, may need to be put on the back-burner for the time being there are many other areas we can focus on. Firstly, remember to practice self-care. Whether that is something as simple as taking a walk, or the more complex issue of dealing with an ongoing health problem, looking after yourself should be your number one priority.

It’s also important to stay calm and get enough rest. While a certain amount of stress is ok, putting too much pressure on yourself can undermine your immune system. Ditto with sleep. Too little or too much is not ideal, so try to adopt a regular pattern and ensure your room is well ventilated. Finally, if in doubt, consult a professional. GPs, mental health providers, even your local chemist, can advise the best way to deal with any concerns you may have. These few simple measures can help you optimise your health. And once the current situation has passed, you will be ready to take on the world.

A NATURAL SMILE

Dental implant specialist, Dr Neil Latcham, explains why dentists should be preventing tooth loss.

MOST PEOPLE would see the principal role of a dentist is to prevent tooth loss. Indeed, the community expectation of dental treatment is that a patient should keep his or her natural teeth for as long as possible. However, according to Dr Neil Latcham, a dental implant specialist with over 30 years experience, unfortunately over the years this has not always been the case. “When I was a young undergraduate in the 1980’s, my mentor, an eminent professor, published an article which demonstrated that it was the intervention of the dentist which determined whether or not a patient retained his or her teeth,” he explains. “In other words, whether you kept your teeth depended on whether your dentist decided to take them out. “Indeed, in a satirical tone, the professor wrote that the further south you resided in Australia, the less teeth you had.” Of course, dentistry has come a long way since Dr Neil was a student.

Technological developments in this time mean that dentists are far better equipped today, than they were in the past, to save a tooth that may have been lost to decay or damage. Why then, do the current statistics still suggest that some dentists may not be doing all they can to save natural teeth and prevent tooth loss? Presently, by age 75, men have 42 per cent more (natural) teeth than women although women are 32 per cent more likely to visit a dentist. These diligent females who come to the dentist more often than their male counterparts are also 25 per cent more likely to have full upper and lower dentures. “I have been a dental specialist for 26 years and I place over 500 dental implants each year,” Dr Neil explains. “In the course of my practice, I often get asked about a system of replacing natural teeth which has been heavily promoted and advertised. “You may know the one I am talking about. It is the ‘All-on-four’ technique.

“As I explain to the patients who ask, this ‘Allon-four’ may be appropriate where the patient has already lost all his or her own teeth. “I do, however, have major reservations about using this technique if the treatment involves the removal of any healthy natural teeth. “In this regard, my views are consistent with that of my professor and, of course, community expectation: dentistry should be about saving teeth. “Of course, I should add that this is not my only concern about this particular system as it requires regular on-going treatment and can have biological problems. “Some patients who undergo this ‘All-on-four’ treatment may think to themselves that if they get this work done and replace all their natural teeth with implants, their problems will be over. “Sadly, they may be bitterly disappointed.” While dental implants do not get decay, they can still suffer periodontal disease and, like natural teeth, dental implants need regular checks and cleans.

Dr Neil Latcham is a registered periodontist with over 30 years experience. If you have any further questions about the state of health of your teeth and gums or even if you would like a second opinion about a dental implant treatment plan you have been given, you can contact his Benowa Mansions practice. BODY CONTOURING

Dr Drew Cronin from the Lotus Institute has some timely advice for patients who have experienced dramatic weight loss.

OVER THE PAST TEN YEARS, South-East Queensland has seen a sharp increase in the number of patients seeking surgical treatment for obesity. Bariatric procedures, such as the sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass, have been lifesaving for thousands of patients, helping them return to a normal weight and lowering their risk of medical comorbidities. However, once reaching their goal weight, many people face a new challenge – rolls upon rolls of excessive skin. “Patients often say they feel it’s unfair,” explains Dr Drew Cronin from the Lotus Institute. “They’ve made some big decisions in order to improve their health – they’ve lost up to half their body weight, and still feel less comfortable in their skin than they did to begin with.” While historically most patients that had gained and then lost weight through diet and exercise might have just needed a tummy tuck

to get their shape back, massive weight loss patients may require skin reduction to a number of areas. “Patients that have lost half of their total body weight may have circumferential skin excess around their abdomen and back, and significant excess skin of the arms and thighs,” says Drew. “This can cause problems with rashes and skin breakdown, and make everyday activities such as wearing normal clothing or exercising difficult and embarrassing.” With the number of people undergoing bariatric surgery continuing to increase, there are more patients, both men and women, seeking plastic surgery to address these problems. “These patients may require a circumferential body lift, arm and thigh lift, breast lift, or even a face or neck lift to address premature ageing associated with loss of facial volume.”

Finally, some patients may also require fat grafting to the buttocks or breasts in order to restore shape and a more youthful appearance. Whatever issues these patients may face post bariatric surgery, there are a range of treatments available designed to give them back the bodies they deserve after reaching their goal weight. Dr Cronin recommends patients with issues stemming from skin excess to first consult with their GP. Any symptoms that cannot be managed conservatively may need referral to a Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon. “Your Plastic Surgeon should be able to identify what your specific problem areas are, and give you a clear, individualised plan as to how they feel they can best address them,” Drew adds. “After all, what’s the point of losing all that weight if you can’t enjoy the skin you’re in?”

lotus-institute.com.au

DR CRONIN’S TIPS FOR PATIENTS CONSIDERING SKIN REDUCTION: 1) Wait until you’ve reached your final weight. It should be stable for at least 6 months before seeing your doctor. 2) Keep in regular contact with a dietician. This is particularly important for patients that have undergone bariatric surgery as they can be prone to low levels of iron, vitamins and minerals, which can have a huge effect on their ability to heal after skin reduction surgery. 3) Quit smoking. Find a surgeon that can address all of your problem areas. Patients may require more than one procedure, and the best outcomes are achieved when the entire surgical plan is made and carried out by the same surgeon.

MINDFUL MOVEMENT The new Floating Lotus Studio is now open at Homeworld Helensvale.

CONNECT TO THE SELF through mindful movement. Connect to like-minded community through shared passion. Release from the stresses of your busy life and make the space to turn in and give inward. At the Floating Lotus Studio, studio owner, Nalini Tebbey, aims to provide an inclusive space that welcomes all ages, genders, shapes and levels of fitness and experience. Nalini has been a dedicated yoga student since 2010 and a teacher since 2015. Her practice began purely as a form of exercise, but has transformed (and continues to do so) into something much more. “I believes yoga is a fantastic tool for anyone to help disconnect from external stresses and pressures and instead connect inward through mindful movement of body and breath,” she says. After completing her training in Sydney with Akasha Yoga, Nalini took the plunge, leaving a corporate job and moving to the Gold Coast to teach yoga full time.

“I was very lucky to have been in the right place at the right time when The Floating Lotus was looking for an owner in 2017,” she says. “My aim is for the studio to be a positive and vibrant space for the community, where everyone is welcome.” Moving on from its previous location on Siganto drive, The Floating Lotus has opened its doors at the new GC North Medical Hub in Homeworld Helensvale The spacious studio offers a peaceful oasis away from the hustle and bustle of the shopping precinct around it. Thoughtfully designed with both the health of clients and the planet in mind, the studio features stunning calais alloy hypoallergenic cork flooring. No trees are felled in the harvesting of this cork, which provides warmth in winter, cool relief in summer and, most importantly, is soft on joints. Natural light filters into the large space with high ceilings warmed by Troldkekt, a natural and sustainable acoustic ceiling panel that help fill

the studio with the clean, richly-detailed sounds from the Sonos audio system. A beautiful lotus mural designed by local artist Christan Salmon wraps a large pillar adding a pop of vibrant colour to the space – perfect for that cheeky insta workout snap. The Floating Lotus Studio offers 38 Yoga, Pilates, Barre, Yin and Meditation classes weekly, as well as a range of workshops, private classes and events. NEW SOLUTIONS

Boutique dental practice, GC Dental Solutions, recently opened in Homeworld Helensvale. GC DENTAL SOLUTIONS lead dentist Dr Michael Sempf boasts over 25 years’ experience in the industry and has a unique and distinct vision for his brand-new clinic. “I didn’t want to create just another stock standard dental clinic,” he explains. “When a patient enters our practice for the first time, I want them to know instantly that this clinic is different.” The waiting room at GC Dental Solutions has been designed to look and feel more like a hotel foyer, not a traditional clinical setting. “The intention of this is twofold,” Dr Sempf says. “Firstly, the relaxed lounge setting puts nervous minds at ease. “And just as important, I want them to know that they are in a place they will be taken care of, a place they can receive quality dentistry by someone they can trust.” The clinic offers the full range of dental services, however, Dr Sempf’s specific interest lies in the provision of dental implant treatment.

Having received advanced training in this field, implant dentistry remains a dominant component of his practice. “We have invested in the latest cone beam CT 3d imaging to assess patient’s anatomy,” he says. “This allows us to plan implant treatment with more accuracy and certainty than was previously possible. This translates to safer surgery and better outcomes for our patients.” Dr Sempf explains that, without doubt, his favourite implant procedure is the All on 4. “When appropriate, this can be a lifechanging and an aesthetically rewarding procedure,” he says. “Essentially it involves placing four dental implants into the jaw which then support a full set of teeth. The big attraction for patients is this can occur in just two days, and the surgical component Is done when they are asleep. “In general, it is suitable for patients currently wearing full dentures, or those who are soon to lose their teeth.”

RESTORE YOUR SMILE

A dental implant is an alternative solution to restore your natural teeth function. DENTAL IMPLANT RESTORATIONS have been used within the dental industry for many years. They enable patients to restore their missing teeth and rejuvenate their smile in a natural way. What is a dental implant? A dental implant is an artificial tooth root made from surgical grade titanium. It is surgically inserted into your jawbone to support or mount a: • Traditional crown • Dental bridge • Overdenture Dental implants are used to replace the root of a missing tooth and provide a foundation for a dental restoration such as a crown. They integrate into your jawbone (over a period of 3-4 months), so that you won’t feel a difference to a natural tooth root. Your dentist will conduct a comprehensive analysis and determine the appropriate implant treatment option for you. Dental Implants and Aesthetics offer several dental implant treatment options.

Single Dental Implant The implant: Single-tooth implants can be used in people who are missing one or more teeth. An implant is surgically placed in an opening that your dentist makes in the jawbone. After the implant integrates (attaches) to your bone, it acts as a new ‘root’ for the crown that will replace your missing tooth. Implant bridge Your dentist will recommend an implant bridge procedure if you have lost more than two teeth or if you have no posterior tooth remaining for a traditional dental bridge to be inserted. Full arch implant restorations A full arch restoration involves the replacement of all the teeth in your upper (maxilla) or lower (mandible) jaw. Your dentist will recommend this treatment option if you have lost all your natural teeth in one or both arches. If you would like to restore your natural smile, you should first consult with your dentist and discuss your dental implant treatment options.

CAPTIVATING KRAKOW Hour after hour, day after day, the Krakow trumpeter reminds everyone in ear shot of the rich history of this enchanting city.

WORDS JASON MURAKAMI WHEREVER YOU ARE in Krakow, each hour of the day you will hear the sound of a trumpet playing a captivating traditional Polish folk song which softly echoes through the city’s streets. According to legend, during a Mongol invasion in the 13th century, a Polish sentry saved the city by climbing to the stairs of St Mary's Church in the town square and sounding the alarm on his trumpet by playing a song called the Hejnał. The trumpeter, however, was shot in the throat as he played and did not complete the anthem, and this is why to this day every performance of the Hejnał ends abruptly before the five-note melody is completed. Situated on the Vistula River, Krakow dates as far back as the 7th century and is the cultural and education centre of Poland.

60 covemagazine.com.au

– Issue 78

Now bounded by seven nations, Poland has waxed and waned over the centuries, buffeted by the forces of regional history. Between the 9th and 14th centuries, its small principalities and townships, of which Krakow was one, were subjugated by successive waves of invasions from the Germans, the Balts and the Mongols. Despite this, the country used the diversity to its advantage and in the 16th century it was the largest state in Europe – and arguably the continent’s most powerful nation. However, two and a half centuries later, during the Partitions of Poland (1772-1918), the once great Polish empire disappeared, parceled out among the contending empires of Russia, Prussia, and Austria.

With such constant change over the centuries one would think that Krakow could suffer from somewhat of an identity crisis but it is this rich tapestry of history which cloaks this beautiful city, making it so strong in character and even more vibrant in culture. The architecture styles are vast with the city centre being dominated by Romanesque, Renaissance and Gothic buildings, as well as early Baroque as a consequence of the Habsburg Empire’s successive rule of the region. Krakow not only prides itself on its architecture and physical beauty but also on its cultural maturity including its culinary prowess. One such restaurant which has led the international charge for Krakow’s cuisine for decades is Cyrano de Bergerac.

The building at 26 Slawkowska Street Old Town, which houses Cyrano de Bergerac, has nearly 500 years of culinary tradition. Located in the northern part of the city, the iconic building has housed mead producers, goldsmiths, bakers and gingerbread makers. After World War Two, Cyrac de Bergerac opened its doors in the cellar of 26 Slawkowska Street and has been serving international politicians and celebrities ever since. It has remained one of Poland’s best restaurants receiving many national

and international accolades including a Michelin Star. The ambience created by the centuries old stone walls, the 19th and 20th century antiques and soft sounds of French masters such as Briel, Piaf and Assnavour, is in complete harmony with the fused Polish/French cuisine which is as complex as it is simple. Cyrac de Bergerac is internationally renowned for its locally produced wild boar which is simply moreish once you get past the offering’s description.

CHOCOLATE FIX

“All you need is love. But a little chocolate now and then doesn’t hurt.” – Charles M. Schulz

WORDS MARJ OSBORNE CHOCOLATE IS THE OLDEST and most popular treat in the world. Dating back to the ancient Mayans who revered cacao as ‘the water that runs through the heart’, this luscious product has universal currency, crossing age, cultural and language barriers. An almost magical food, as seen in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Harry Potter, chocolate fills our dreams from youth. It’s seen to have redemptive power in Chocolat, and it’s an agent of bonding in The Chocolate Lovers’ Club. As a token of love and commitment, chocolate is the most intimate of gifts, yet it is also the present you can give a stranger to suit any occasion. Seen as a ‘Food of the Gods’, chocolate is a great mood elevator packed full of feel-good endorphins. Little wonder that it’s variously seen as a symbol of romance, happiness, relaxation, optimism and good times. Whether it’s a surprise from the Easter Bunny, a thank you on Mother’s Day or a special gift for Valentine’s Day, chocolate is a sweet indulgence we can all afford. Many local chocolatiers are raising the bar on chocolate making, with some of their products receiving worldwide recognition.

WOMEN IN WINE Meet two women changing the face of the wine industry.

WORDS TONY HARPER MY FIRST REAL LESSON in wine, and humility, was delivered at the hands of Pam Dunsford, now retired but then Chief Winemaker at Chapel Hill in McLaren Vale. The inherent arrogance of a twenty-something year-old male making some small waves in the wine world was stripped away in a few curt words. And then she nursed me back. I’ve never been even remotely misogynistic, but Pam earned a level of respect that few other winemakers (of either gender) have ever managed and made me realise just how precious a resource our female wine people are. They have a different way of viewing wine, its making, and its place in the world. They seem removed from the egotistical side of things; more in touch with the stuff in the bottle rather than the brouhaha that surrounds it. Since then my wine-life has been filled with female visionaries: Vanya Cullen, Sue Hodder, Sue Bell, Kerri Thompson, Samantha Connew, Bernadette O’Shea, Prue Henschke, Virginia Willcock, the enigmatic Jane Faulkner and countless others. Somewhere in the mix is my wife. There isn’t the room here to talk about them all, but I’ve chosen a couple that rise to the top of the pile, perhaps for no other reason than I’ve rubbed shoulders with them more closely and more often.

Jane Faulkner – she comes imbued with a touch of a young Dawn French in her persona; bold and brassy, always smiling, unlikely to be missed in any crowd. It’s possible to dismiss Jane – until you know her – as overconfident. Noisy, for sure. But there is far more to the Jane Faulkner puzzle than mere bluster. She is a wine-writer, an educator, a senior wine judge. And behind the confidence and swagger is a fine palate and a deep thinker; Jane gets things that others miss, and that has never been more starkly apparent than during her tenure as Chief Judge at the Australian Alternative Varieties Wine Show. This is where I first met her as she was taking over the reins from Max Allen (a big ask) and tasked with holding together the egos, differences, talents and weaknesses of a dozen wine judges. She managed it with aplomb. “I grew up with gastronomes for parents so the foundation was set,” Jane explains. “They were worldly, multi-cultural and great cooks. “Dad was the wine lover and a bottle would be at the dinner table. To enjoy. To share. Wine was a part of my culture growing up. “I love all the elements about wine,” she continues.

“Its rich history, the diverse varieties/ styles that can be made. How it is grown, the innumerable places it grows from ancient volcanic soils with almost no rainfall say on Santorini to frozen grapes in Niagara, Canada resulting in ice-wine. “How humans have cultivated vines and turned the fruit into something so special, intoxicating, is a constant source of fascination – we’ve manipulated nature to create the perfect elixir, I’m never bored by that story. “Some may say, it’s just a drink. But, wow what a drink. How great it is, and a privilege, to write about wine, which is to say, about people.” According to Jane, women bring different opinions and objectives to the table. “Women have brought equality to all facets of the wine industry be it judging, viticulture, wine writing, etc because any industry dominated by one group of people is lopsided or certainly skewed with their views and frankly it is also boring. It does not represent society at all. “We know Helen Reddy sang: ‘I am women, hear me roar, in numbers too big to ignore’ and those women, the other 50 per cent of the population, might like to know about wine from other women. “I also think many men are and were far from happy with the wine scene being dominated by men.”

Bernadette O’Shea is as great a character, but wildly different than Jane. Champagne is her passion and – since she won the Vin de Champagne in 1984 (the first woman to do so in the non-professional category) – it has been her life. These days she writes about it, talks about it, teaches it and – aside from water – solely drinks it. Crazy, I know, but true. “It (champagne) is joyful, happy, full of spirit, magnificence and euphoria,” Bernadette insists. “It expresses every mood, speaks every language, is a form of applause and sparkles its way into all the best moments on the world stage. “For me it is a way of life and a truly happy form of inspiration.” And she is right. The simplest of things ... bubbles, have turned lean, hard to love wine into the most recognised celebrationary drink on the planet. There’s an X-factor to champagne that every other wine growing country has tried to emulate – some have come close, but none has ever captured that extraordinarily subtle nuance. “They (women) bring a special bond and help unite people – to break barriers and encourage people to get to know each other,” says Bernadette.

“Women are in line with the moment and they know that each moment has its own wine or champagne. “Women have an understanding of champagne and know it is inspirational and full of qualities of charm, refinement, quality, elegance, finesse and enchantment. They particularly understand the spiritual mystique of champagne.” I’ve skipped a thousand great women here – some winemakers or viticulturists, some writers, others sommeliers and educators. Even so, I have watched from the wings over the past two decades as women fought (like Pam Dunsford) for recognition in a male-based world, and then gently began to share the territory with their hairier counterparts. It has been a wonderful progression but I’ll stand aside and let Jane Faulkner close ... “The wine scene is much richer and better for having women and men on an equal footing,” she says. “We need to ensure that continues. There is still a need for on-going support for women to stay working in wine (not many female wine writers eh?). “Every generation should set a better platform for the next. I am doing my bit now. That makes the future fantastic.”

ON YOUR MARQUES

Chris Nixon has a round-up of the latest motoring news.

CIAO ROMA WITH a name like Roma, you would naturally assume Ferrari’s newest model, due in Australia toward the end of this year, embodies beauty, glamour and sophistication reminiscent of the Eternal City. It should look right at home under the porte-cocheré of our local Palazzo Versace, then. Front-engined grand touring cars like the Roma may be no longer the optimum for performance, even in Ferrari’s own ranks, but they remain the favoured configuration if you’re talking style, not aggression. Think Aston Martin, Bentley and the traditional long-nose Ferraris favoured by decades of Hollywood stars, not Lamborghini. No Australian price has been announced yet for the Roma, but with its turbocharged V8 engine and ‘two-plus’ accommodation it seems likely to slot somewhere around mid-range. With Ferrari’s recommended retail prices currently ranging between roughly $400,000 and $850,000, you can take your pick for the Roma – or ring Ferrari for a hint (that did us no good, however). To quote Ferrari: “The car is clothed in long, ultra-sleek lines that sweep back from the front bonnet, highlighting the spare silhouette of the flanks and the compact set-back fastback cabin volume. To underscore that formal minimalism, all superfluous detailing has been removed.” The Roma’s chisel-nose profile and restrained detail will remind afficionados of a legendary – and now priceless – Ferrari, the 1968-1973 365 GTB/4 Daytona. The Roma isn’t all pasta and no sauce, however. That 4.0 litre V8, shared with the convertible hardtop Portofino and GTC4 Lusso T coupe, belts out 456 kiloWatts of power and spears the Roma to a claimed top speed of 320 kilometres an hour – a breath short of a magical 200 miles an hour. BRAVO BENTLEY IN case anyone had forgotten its racing roots, Bentley celebrated its recent centenary by taking the Continental GT coupe to victory at the prestigious Bathurst 12-Hour race. The win was hugely popular with fans, more used to seeing nimble Ferraris, Porsches or McLarens up front on the mountain than the unlikely-looking Conti. The race is one of the most highly-regarded in the category for so-called Grand Touring cars and attracts multi-million dollar assaults from teams around the world. The winning Bentley, run by a British team, covered almost 1950 kilometres in 12 hours – imagine driving from Brisbane to Sydney and back between breakfast and dinner time – after five previous attempts. It was a signal achievement for Bentley, which built its sporting reputation on wins in the Le Mans 24 Hours in France in 1924, -27, -28, -29, -30 and 2003. If readers of Cove spy a few more Bentley Continental GTs on the road, it’s proof of the adage, ‘Win on Sunday, Sell on Monday’.

HARK, THE MASERATI EV Maserati’s straight-six, V6, V8 and V12 engines are legendary. Beautifully finished aluminium engines, snarling big Weber carburettors and rasping exhausts are the stuff of car-lovers’ dreams; a Maserati without a sensual soundtrack is unimaginable. So what are enthusiasts supposed to think about one of the supreme exotic makes producing a sports car with an electric motor that makes no sound except a faint whirr? Maserati has come up with an inventive solution for their range of EVs arriving next year. The Italian maker says its electric vehicles ‘will have a distinctive signature sound, already a unique attribute of all Maserati cars equipped with traditional combustion engines.” Read that as, no actual engine sound but ‘synthetic sound at the push of a button’. Maserati promises that by 2023 it will use full-electric or hybridelectric power in all its new cars, which are expected to include a second SUV model smaller in size than the current Levante.

PAY MORE, GET LESS WITH car number plate collecting, the fewer the numbers the more you pay. At a recent Shannons auction of Victorian plates, ‘26’ sold for an astonishing $1.11 million. A three-number plate attracted only $165,000, four numbers $132,000 and five numbers $104,000. Collecting plates is an arcane pursuit. A collector plate has no aesthetic or practical value and you don’t even have to have it on a car. Rarity is its greatest asset – each plate number is of course unique. As a virtual asset, it can’t be stolen off the wall or out of the driveway or destroyed in a fire. Its investment potential may significantly exceed any conventional asset. There may even be tax benefits (but thorough due diligence is essential). But … for $1.11 million, wouldn’t it be much more fun to own the car than the plate? Issue 78 – covemagazine.com.au

McLaren redefines the rules of Grand Touring with a unique new car for a new audience.

SLEEK, ELEGANT AND MUSCUL AR, the superlight new McLaren GT challenges the conventions of the Grand Tourer categor y with a compelling blend of beautiful design, high-quality innovative materials, true supercar per formance and McLaren driving dynamics and engagement. “The new McLaren GT combines competition levels of performance with continent-crossing capability, wrapped in a beautiful body and true to McLaren’s ethos of designing superlight cars with a clear weight advantage over rivals,” said Mike Flewitt, Chief Executive Officer, McLaren Automotive.

“Designed for distance, it provides the comfort and space expected of a Grand Tourer, but with a level of agility never experienced before in this segment. “In short, this is a car that redefines the notion of a Grand Tourer in a way that only a McLaren could.” Positioned alongside the established Sports, Super and Ultimate Series families, this is a new McLaren for a new audience and provides an alternative to existing products in an expanding market segment. In re-imagining the spirit of traditional Grand Touring – long-distance driving in comfort, at higher speeds and with room for luggage –

McLaren has also redefined the modern GT ownership experience with a car that is lighter, faster and more engaging with greater space, comfort and usability. A golf bag or two pairs of 185cm skis and boots as well as luggage can be carried with ease, while a further 150 litres of storage at the front means the new McLaren GT can accommodate a total of 570 litres. The interior is a cosseting space designed to delight on longer journeys, but with all the essentials for focused, high performance driving. The seating position, location of controls and forward visibility are as important here as they are in any McLaren.

Technology and modern craftsmanship share equal prominence in the new McLaren GT, with the finest high-quality materials complemented by features such as the most sophisticated McLaren infotainment system to date. Other features include hidden-until-lit ambient lighting and the option of an electrochromic glazed panel in lieu of the standard carbon fibre composite gloss black roof, darkening or lightening at the touch of a button. Creating a new type of McLaren – and the first true Grand Tourer from the brand – saw the McLaren design team embracing the visual history of Grand Touring cars while remaining true to the philosophies that underpin all McLaren design.

“The new McLaren GT delivers the dynamic performance and driving exhilaration expected of a McLaren but is also an exceptionally refined vehicle,” said Darren Goddard, McLaren GT Vehicle Line Director, McLaren Automotive. “Overall, the breadth of ability demonstrated by the new McLaren GT – especially its everyday usability – is truly remarkable.” Should you wish to find out more about any Qualified or demonstrator models, contact James Read, Brand Manager, McLaren Gold Coast on 07 5509 7110.

DB11 and Vantage, DBX features an impressive output of torque, carefully tuned to meet the specific needs of this model. With a sound character that is unquestionably Aston Martin, the active exhaust system ensures this is a luxury SUV that can sound refined one moment and exhilarating the next. The engine’s versatility isn’t restricted to its vocals either; the turbocharged V8 has cylinder deactivation to enhance fuel economy, yet it can also propel DBX from 0 to 100kmh in 4.5 seconds and on to a top speed of 291km/h. With 632 litres of boot space and folding rear seats, DBX possesses all the flexible load capacity expected of an SUV with class-leading interior space. A narrow load sill and broad aperture maximises the practicality for a variety of luggage, such as suitcases, golf bags and ski equipment. There are many optional accessory packages offered, which will tailor the car even further to customers’ needs, sports or pastimes.

The DBX SUV marks a bold new chapter for Aston Martin.

The luxuriously handcrafted interior of DBX has been designed to provide equal space and comfort whether sitting in the front or rear of the car. Class-leading headroom and legroom combines with a full-length glass panoramic roof and frameless door glass to offer a fantastically light and spacious cabin environment. “DBX is a car that will give many people their first experience of Aston Martin ownership,” said Aston Martin President and CEO, Dr Andy Palmer. “As such it needed to be true to the core values established in our sports cars, while also providing the lifestyle versatility expected of a luxury SUV. “To have produced such a beautiful, hand built, yet technologically advanced car is a proud moment for Aston Martin.” Should you wish to find out more about the Aston Martin DBX, or any other models, contact Paul Hewitt, General Manager, Aston Martin Queensland on 07 5582 7888.

SPORTIER SPIDER

The Ferrari F8 Spider: the evolution of the species.

FERRARI HAS UNVEILED the F8 Spider, the new generation drop-top sports car equipped with the most successful mid-rear-mounted V8 in history. The Ferrari F8 Spider was designed in parallel with the F8 Tributo berlinetta and features the Prancing Horse’s compact and efficient RHT (Retractable Hard Top) which influences the lines of a model that leads its category. The latest addition to an exclusive and prestigious bloodline of open-top V8 cars that began with the 308 GTS in 1977, the F8 Spider is less extreme than the 488 Pista Spider, but sportier than the 488 Spider which it replaces in the range. Consequently, the F8 Spider sets a new benchmark for the ‘en plein air’ sports car in terms of usable performance and exceptional handling, providing an incredibly rewarding driving experience. In fact, it excels in merging handling dynamics with surprising in-car comfort. This Ferrari Spider thus combines the characteristics of the most lauded 8-cylinder engine in history with unparalleled driving pleasure.

76 covemagazine.com.au

– Issue 78

The V8 has raised the performance bar to unprecedented new heights, not only for turbo engines but power units of all types. The engine is a development of the V8 that won the ‘International Engine of the Year Award’ for four consecutive years (2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019) and that was also selected as the best engine of the last two decades. An incredible feat unmatched in the history of the Awards. The F8 Spider’s greatest achievement is the fact that it unleashes its power instantaneously with zero turbo lag, while retaining this V8’s unique and very special soundtrack. This astonishing performance and the car’s disarmingly effortless handling were made possible by integrating a series of innovative, track-derived aero solutions into its design. The mission of every new model produced by Maranello is to introduce new design features and outperform its predecessors on all fronts. The challenge the engineers and designers always face is to push their own creative limits and the boundaries of technology by introducing new, leading-edge solutions and setting new levels of excellence.

This is something they have done to brilliant effect once again with this new model. The F8 Spider replaces the 488 Spider and improves on all aspects of its specifications: aside from the fact that its engine delivers an extra 50 cv, the new Ferrari is 20 kg lighter than its predecessor. The F8 Spider is significantly more aerodynamically efficient too and features the new 6.1 version of the Side Slip Angle Control system. Designed by the Ferrari Styling Centre, the F8 Spider continues to emphasise Ferrari’s key characteristics of high performance and extreme aerodynamic efficiency. The goal was to create a stylistic tribute to the Ferrari V8 engine, by evolving the contents of the F8 Tributo and taking inspiration from the most iconic mid-rear-engined V8 sports cars in Ferrari history. The result is a car with a strong personality of its own, with an even sportier design that offers drivers pure emotion.

Pressurised fresh and raw water are both within reach for keeping things tidy, while the lid for the bait area flips over to provide a cutting surface. Underneath the whole affair is a 62L premium esky that slides out electrically.

Turn your attention forward and you’ll see a standard electric anchor winch with helm controls for effortlessly setting up on a fishing spot. Covered in black acrylic to minimise glare, the dash holds dual flush-mounted touchscreen 16-inch displays, LED gauges and an array of switches, leaving real estate to accommodate trim-tab switches, a mobile-device charging station and more. Up front the 328 Commander gets its party on. In the bow there are triple aft-facing wraparound lounges with stowage underneath and dual flip-out backrests allowing you to also lounge facing forwards. Drop a table in, throw out some party snacks and drinks, and happy hour is complete. In front of the centre console is also a huge two-person, forward-facing seat with massive stowage underneath. The console is big enough to house a fully plumbed electric toilet, shower and a 180cm long cushioned berth with yet more rod storage underneath. Sea Fox has built an impressive offshore angling machine in the 328 Commander with maximum fishability and performance with a price tag that starts below many of its competitors. Sea Fox also offers a remarkable lifetime hull warranty allowing you to buy with confidence. JSW Powersports is the Australian distributor for Sea Fox Boats.

POWER & PERFORMANCE

Maritimo is set to make history at rescheduled Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show.

THE RESCHEDULED 2020 Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show (SCIBS) will feature a spectacular Maritimo on water display that can best be described in four words, power, performance, pride and perfection. Lead designer and brand director Tom BarryCotter said the SCIBS display will be a clear demonstration of the world-class skills and expertise of the team behind the brand and the excellence of the product itself. "From new luxury motor yachts models to national and international champion racing achievements, new model announcements, a completely new performance package for our X range, our award-winning on water display centre and VIP Owner’s lounge and events, Maritimo's SCIBS presence this year will showcase why Maritimo is Australia’s leading luxury motor yacht brand," said Tom. Maritimo will premiere the new 2020 model M64 motoryacht and launch the stunning new M55 motoryacht, which will be completed later in the year Also on display will be the one of the World Champion Maritimo Racing Team’s Offshore Superboats, providing insight into the core of Maritimo’s research and development. Maritimo Racing claimed National Championship and World Championship titles in 2019 in boats designed and built in house, and entered 2020 being recognised as arguably the most advanced powerboat racing team in the world. At the other end of the nautical spectrum, Maritimo will display the beautifully restored

116-year-old ketch Katwinchar which Maritimo raced in the 2020 Rolex Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race winning the Veteran Yacht Category. The ketch is closely tied to Maritimo founder Bill Barry-Cotter. Once owned by his father, the family yacht was sold and not seen again for over half a century when it was discovered on Gumtree in 2017. Its transformation from derelict wreck to nautical work of art took Maritimo craftsmen more than two years. And then there is the product line of 2020 model luxury motor yachts with models across the M, X and S series lines. "The new 2020 M64 will be the first international display of the recent exterior and interior evolutionary upgrades to the M64 model evolved from Maritimo’s design and new product development strategy," said Tom. "New exterior hull glazing and contours make the new M64 instantly recognisable, while the redeveloped master stateroom and interior raise levels of comfort and functionality to new levels." Also being premiered is the new X50R, and launch of the performance package available for X-Series sport yacht models. "The spectacular, high powered and stunningly upgraded version of the highly popular and revolutionary X50 sport yacht is now available with D13 800hp Scania power and high-performance propeller upgrade,” he said. "Its optional full-colour exterior delivers a mysterious aura which is equalled only by its racing technology-driven performance and Maritimo One design detail.

"The added available power provides an exceptional power to weight ratio and driving experience." Another highlight will be S51 and M59 models from the Maritimo One division, showcasing the scope of customisation the new division enables with both vessels heavily spec’d for sport fishing. The customised fish transoms, sport cockpits, and game towers, combined with Maritimo’s longrange cruising proficiencies, create formidable sport fishing vessels. This has resonated with fishing enthusiasts seeking specialised fishing abilities coupled with Maritimo’s longstanding pedigree of tough construction and ocean-going performance. In addition, Maritimo will also introduce the latest creation born from the company’s design and new product development strategy, in the new M55 flybridge motor yacht set to premiere late in 2020. This will mark the latest major product release since the X50 Sport Yacht in 2019 and will reconfirm Maritimo's international standing of leading long-range cruising motor yacht design. "The M55 is a long-range offshore cruising enclosed flybridge vessel which takes Maritimo’s core brand values and attributes to new heights," said Tom. "With greater comfort, functionality, and passage making performance, the M55 marks a new era for enclosed flybridge motor yachts internationally."

PRIMED FOR

GROWTH Demand for housing remains strong in South-East Queensland.

WORDS NICK NICHOLS THERE’S NO SHORTAGE of confidence in the property market from a national perspective, with the rebound in prices earlier this year among the strongest in some time. If vacancy rates are any indicator, there’s probably even more reason to be confident in south-east Queensland. However, judging by statistics from the Queensland building and construction industry, the picture is a little more complex when determining if the market is heading for a shortfall of new homes. According to Housing Industry Association economist Angela Lillicrap, this could be a factor in Queensland property prices rising over the near term. A key indicator for demand for housing is the residential vacancy rate and that stood at 2.1 per cent across Queensland at the end of last year.

86 covemagazine.com.au

– Issue 78

While vacancies in Brisbane tightened, they remained above the state average at 2.3 per cent. In comparison, the key lifestyle cities of Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast were well under this at 1.8 per cent each. It shows demand for housing is steady to strong in Queensland’s south-east corner. At the same time, supply is showing signs of slowing. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, building approvals fell sharply in 2019 with Brisbane down 29 per cent, Gold Coast down 25 per cent and Sunshine Coast falling by 17 per cent. The figures herald potential supply constraints in these cities.

Ms Lillicrap says Brisbane’s apartment boom, which ended in 2016 leaving a legacy of excess stock, has effectively kept residential vacancies from going significantly lower than current levels. However, she believes conditions are ripe for this to change. “Our view is the Queensland market should pick up and all the fundamentals are there for that pick-up,” she said. “In the short term, we do see potential for a bit of an increase in prices.” The records show that last financial year there was a net gain of 22,800 people from interstate to Queensland, most of them accommodated in the state’s south-east. This puts the downturn in building approvals into perspective, although Ms Lillicrap is confident the market will balance out.

“As soon as we see prices start to rise, investors and developers will have the confidence to return to the market,” she says. “This will help to avert any supply issues.” The Queensland Government’s Quarterly Industry Bulletin, which monitors construction activity, offers a different measure of current construction trends, but the story is similar. The data, as determined by the National Institute of Economic and Industry Research, shows overall residential construction by value held relatively steady from mid-2018 towards the end of 2019. While the value of new home construction is generally lower, it finds the significant factor keeping residential activity afloat has been the growth of renovations.

The research indicates that property owners are more inclined to give their home a makeover rather than buy or build a new one. The Quarterly Industry Bulletin forecasts that over the two years to 2021, private renovation expenditure will have achieved average annual growth of 13.8 per cent to reach $7.9 billion. This will be offset by a forecast fall in new dwelling construction expenditure by an average of 7.8 per cent annually to about $11 billion. That’s supported by ABS data showing $926.7 million worth of renovations by Queensland homeowners in the last six months of 2019, up from $843.7 million a year earlier. “One of the big drivers of renovation activity more recently has been issues around access to finance,” says Ms Lillicrap.

“People haven’t been able to buy because they can’t access the finance so they might choose to renovate instead.” Further research by the HIA indicates the scope of renovations very much depends on the age of a property. “Our research has shown a strong correlation between the age of a dwelling and when renovations get done,” says Ms Lillicrap. “When a house reaches 15 years old the focus is on the kitchen and bathroom. Homes that are 30 to 35 years old generally get another big renovation.”

Acclaimed Icelandic singer-songwriter, multiinstrumentalist and collaborator, Ásgeir, will kick off his 2020 Australian tour in QPAC’s Concert Hall. Expertly composed and transcendental in approach, Ásgeir’s melancholic, electronic-folk and ambitious electro-pop beats penetrate a little deeper than most. Bringing his forthcoming third album, Bury The Moon to Australian audiences for the first time, this concert marks Ásgeir’s debut as a headline act in Brisbane.

The streets, parks and venues across Broadbeach will rattle and hum to the sound of the blues once again for the Blues on Broadbeach Music Festival. Held over four days, the 2020 line-up includes Tommy Emmanuel, Gaby Moreno, Karise Eden, Kim Churchill, Bondi Cigars and Allensworth, alongside some other incredibly talented Australian and international blues artists.
