WELCOME TO 2021. Hopefully, like me, you are feeling a fresh sense of positivity and hope as we start a brand-new year. To kick things off we are proud to bring you our annual ‘Health and Wellness’ edition. Focussing on mental and physical wellbeing, inside you will find everything from amazing days spas to the latest in fitness programs and men’s health. Dr Ashar Khan has some timely advice on how to create a positive mindset, while Brooke overcomes her inner demons on an inspiring holiday to Cairns. Given the Gold Coast’s renewed popularity as a home-base and tourist destination, we have also introduced a new section which we have called City Icons. Every edition we will bring you profiles on inspiring locals who are leaders in their chosen field – and we couldn’t be prouder of our first two ‘Icons’. Firstly, we introduce the man behind the Kollosche brand – Michael Kollosche. Entering the industry fresh out of school, Michael now heads up one of the most successful real estate practices on the Coast. We then turn to the entertainment industry to meet music sensation Amy Shark. Having honed her skill in many local venues, Amy is now a global sensation, collaborating with the likes of Ed Sheeran and picking up eight Aria Awards along the way.

The stars keep shining in our feature interview as well, when George Clooney joins us to talk about his latest movie, life in COVID-19 mode and his hopes for the future. Apparently even Hollywood super heroes have to change nappies and do the laundry during a pandemic. Moving on, we preview of the latest summer swimwear, test-drive a selection of ‘retro’ classic cars and unveil OMEGA’s timekeeper’s timepiece for the upcoming America’s Cup. Of course, we couldn’t start the year without a bumper Property section, the best food and wine to be found in the region and a wrap up of events that took place during the summer so you will find all that inside as well. Finally, what better way to refresh your mind and body than with a stay at the beautiful Gwinganna Lifestyle Retreat. We are giving someone the chance to win a weekend for two at this award-winning eco resort nestled high above the Tallebudgera Valley. Details are on page 18. Happy New Year.

CITY ICONS

Profiling our leaders From our inaugural edition back in 2007, Cove magazine has always championed local success stories. Now, we continue to build on that legacy by introducing a new section which we have called City Icons. In every issue we will profile identities from all walks of life who are leading the way in their chosen field, whether that’s in business, the arts, sport or community service. Our first two ‘Icons’ – Michael Kollosche and Amy Shark – are the epitome of both local and successful. Michael’s passion for real estate has taken him from a junior sales role to head of the eponymous Kollosche agency, while music sensation Amy has gone from playing local venues to appearing on the world stage.

The Gold Coast prestige property market is booming … and one of the prominent names leading the way is Kollosche. But who is the man behind the eponymous brand and what is the secret to his incredibly successful real estate career? Brooke sat down with Michael at his Broadbeach office for a frank and intimate chat.

Keep Kalm

Experience lasting positive change at the Kalm Clinic. Chelsea Brazier began her journey into the world of wellness after spending over 10 years in the corporate world and experiencing a high level of stress and burnout. Shortly after this, she lost her Mum to cancer. She channelled her grief into a curiosity for exploring the mind and how our minds have the biggest impact on both our physical and mental health. Chelsea studied multiple neurological and health programs and discovered that health and wellness not only starts with our mindsets, but that our minds are our own powerful vessel for positive lasting change. She now works as a Positive Psychotherapist, Clinical Hypnotherapist and Breathwork Teacher to help inspire others to harness the power of their mindsets and make positive change and healing a priority. Fusing hypnotherapy, NLP, Positive Psychology and breathwork, Chelsea’s Kalm Clinic offers the support, healing, tools and techniques to deliver powerful shifts in your energy, conscious and subconscious for more lasting positive change.

SKY'S THE LIMIT

Meet George Clooney – the man, the movie star, the motivator for change.

WORDS LEX MARTIN / THE INTERVIEW PEOPLE IN ‘THE MIDNIGHT SKY’ he plays a dying man on a dying planet. In real life he had to brave the challenges of lockdown and washing tons of laundry, but you wouldn’t know it from the chipper mood that George Clooney displays in this interview. The 59-year-old seems to relish the perspective of talking to the press – albeit only via zoom – and presenting his experiences on and off-screen with a lot of self-irony and black humour. But he turns serious again when it comes to the state of things on our planet, even though there’s a glimmer of hope. ‘The Midnight Sky’ was made for Netflix, and you’re making your next movie for Amazon. Do you still believe in movie theatres? Netflix was kind enough to release this in movie theatres first, although it doesn’t look like it’s going to happen because of the pandemic. I also have a deal with MGM and we are doing a film called ‘The Boys in the Boat’. I am a big believer in movie theatres but Netflix sent me this, and it’s a really wonderful script. Netflix has created hundreds and thousands of jobs for actors, directors, writers and producers, so I am also a big fan of theirs on every level. This movie is a meditation on family and solitude. How has this movie changed your view of the world and the choices that you are making in this world? I’d like to think that just the addition of an incredible wife and two knuckleheads into the process hasn’t really fundamentally changed who I am and what I believe. It seems to have just added to the urgency of some of those things. As you know I have never been quiet about this – I have strong beliefs in the world and where we are going and how fragile all of this is – how democracies are, humanity is. And we all have a responsibility to pay attention to what we can do to protect it as well as we can. Having a family certainly amplifies it, but it’s not something that I wasn’t working on and have been dealing with my whole life. >> Issue 82 – covemagazine.com.au

FEATURE

We’re living in a lot of crisis right now: immigration crisis, inequality crisis etc. – which one worries you the most? The exis tential threat of global warming ultimately is the big one you have to pay attention to. We are destroying our planet, that’s what we have to pay our attention to. But in the immediate future what we have to deal with, there is a wholesale of hate that is going around the world. It divides us in a way that is very dangerous. You are using immigration as a wedge to say ‘Look at these people, they are not like you, they are taking your jobs, they’re harming our community or causing crime’, which is not true. You are finding that over many countries we have been to or lived in, including my own, that we have been divided and filled with hate. And it’s a very dangerous place to be because if you play that out over the next 30 years, it’s not all inconceivable, that what we saw in the film is not a fiction at all, but is a reality. It’s not hard to imagine. We have to get to the position that facts matter, truth matters, and tone down the rhetoric in all these countries to get back to treating people fairly, particularly people who are vulnerable. That’s a very important place to be.

22 covemagazine.com.au

– Issue 82

What expectations do you have from the new man in the White House in that respect? I tell you what my hope is. I have a lot of expectations and it starts with this: starting January 20, we won’t have someone who’s arguably ‘the leader for the free world’ as we say, who says that journalists are the enemy of the people. It’s a good start. It’s a good start to say that from January 20, we won’t have a man who created a policy that says that people who are seeking asylum, we are taking their children away from them and put them in cages. We’re going to go back to the idea that we can’t do things on our own as we have learned as we sit in a global pandemic. It requires all of us, in particular the US, who used to lead the world in all these things, to actually take a stand in finding ways to work together with all of our allies and stand up against people who are committing hateful crimes. We used to do that. We made a lot of mistakes in our country over the years and we continue to make them. The good news is I hope that we are pretty good at fixing a lot of them. I hope this is the first big step in that way. I am friends with the President elect, but even if I were not, I would say that there is a moment that meets the man.

He was not right in 2008. Barack Obama was the right person. But Joe Biden is the right person to be President right now, and I think the moment will meet the man. Do you have any thoughts on the big 60 coming up in May? First of all, I do have thoughts about it. It sucks. But it’s better than the alternative, which is death. I guess there is not much I can do about it. How have you coped with living in isolation in the pandemic? I have done it the same way most of us have done – by doing 12 pounds of laundry a day, mopping and washing dishes and now changing diapers. Not my diapers … my children’s diapers … I think it’s important to clairfy. I am very happy that I have a home where we have some land, so we can go out and walk. The hard part for us, which is the hard part for you and everyone, would be that it’s very tricky to not be with my parents, who are 87 and 81. It’s very hard to not be with Amal’s parents, who are up in age as well. These are the times we want to be spending together and it’s tricky and hard. But we’ll get through it. There is a light at the end of the tunnel, so we are going to get there. >>

FEATURE ‘The Midnight Sky’ is not your first science fiction film. How did this interest in the genre start? The birth of it all for us was ‘2001’. For anyone of a certain age, that’s the highwater mark but there are other films that were sort of sci-fi. ‘Alien’ came out when I had just graduated high school, and when you watch that movie now, every bit of it holds up. Ridley Scott had a really good run of doing interesting sci-fi that holds up. I have always been a fan of it, but this one, as time goes on, it gets less and less fiction, unfortunately. I loved working with Steven Soderbergh on ‘Solaris’ and Alfonso Cuarón on ‘Gravity’ because I got to see what they were doing, what was making it unique and interesting. I am a fan of exploring space’s infinity and infinite possibilities. Your character is much older and terminally ill. Was it hard to prepare for this role? I did what I had to do. It’s funny because I was preparing in the summer in Italy, which is not easy to do. I had to lose 25 pounds – and it’s not easy in Italy with all that pasta. Then I had to grow this massive scraggly beard and shave my head. I knew what I had to do for the part. I never tried to play him as 70. I just figured he is beat up and my age. I was very disappointed at how long my eyebrows grew but other than that, I have to say, as a character it was mostly along the lines of ‘Syriana’ or ‘The American’ in terms of stillness and quiet. That was the key to this. From the very beginning we talked about how this it was going to be a meditation. The little girl doesn’t speak so we were going to use Alexandre Desplat’s score to tell the story in a way that is much more about the feeling of being lost and of loss. We knew it was much more about the way how still and quiet you could be. How was the shoot in Iceland? It was fun. Iceland is stunning. We were out on the second largest glacier in the world, which is shrinking. If someone wants to talk about global warming, go to the places that are on the frontlines of that, go to Iceland or the Maldives, where the water is rising. It’s not a theory, it’s a fact. But Iceland was beautiful. We were out on the glacier. It was very cold, but it’s sunny, and we were waiting for these huge snow clouds to come through, and it was whipped up by the wind.

You could see it coming towards you and everybody would brace themselves – and then we would go ‘Here it comes’ and we would shoot in this massive hurricane and then it would go away. Then we would go in and I would take a blowdryer to my face that would open my eyes, because my eyelashes were frozen shut. And then we would come back out and wait for the next gust to come through. It was a challenge but as an actor it makes things easier.

As Martin Luther King used to say, the arc of history does bend towards justice. It just takes a long time. – Geroge Clooney

How did you approach the story of ‘The Midnight Sky’ – in comparison to a movie like ‘Solaris’? Let’s talk about the meditative part of the story. When I read the script, I didn’t read it as this giant space story. I tried to read it as a very small intimate story about people trying to come to terms with communicating with one another, talking and finding their way home.

Coming to terms with their own fears and regret, which is a huge part of this film, and seeking redemption, which we find in this film. There is a lot of that in the original ‘Solaris’, seeking redemption and certainly regret, which is a huge part of the story. You can’t tell big stories like they are big. It requires you to tell small stories. And in this story, the character that I play lives in a terrible place. I know a lot of people who are older than me – so that’s old – who live with regret. And it’s a cancer in them. It’s a terrible thing. Redemption is that cleansing force. I looked at the film much in a way that ‘Solaris’ does. In terms of this is a very personal story about people in a very big landscape. Do you think earth might be a place where we can no longer live? If we go on the same trajectory, absolutely. If we don’t address science, if we ignore facts, if we decide that the best arguments are the arguments against one another as opposed to finding common ground with one another, certainly. What other version could possibly happen? But I don’t believe that’s going to happen. I believe in our better angels. I am very optimistic about the world. As Martin Luther King used to say, the arc of history does bend towards justice. It just takes a long time. I am realistic, but I am very hopeful as always.

KEEPING IT REAL The man behind the brand: Michael Kollosche. WORDS RHONDA OXNAM THE GOLD COAST PRESTIGE PROPERTY market is booming … and one of the prominent names leading the way is Kollosche. But who is the man behind the eponymous brand and what is the secret to his success? We met with Michael Kollosche at his Broadbeach headquarters on a perfect Friday morning … the sun is shining, the office is buzzing and he is running fashionably late as a client meeting ran overtime and he is negotiating multiple contracts between appointments. And that is the initial clue to his incredibly successful real estate career … the customer always comes first. “When I started the business a couple of years ago, the first thing we did was sit down with the objective of detailing ‘a day spent in the life of a customer’ and from that point figuring out how we can make it as easy as for Buyers and Sellers to transact,” he explains. “Then we developed a system to streamline that whole process – so that we could replicate to ensure everyone receives the same experience.” But let’s backtrack a few years. Michael is an enterprising young man looking for a rewarding career and his passion for property has led him to a sales role with one on the most well-known brands in the real estate industry. “I went to university but I wasn’t really enjoying it so I started working in sales at Ray White in 1997 when I was a couple of years out of school,” he recalls. Like a lot of young people, Michael went through that initial training and grounding in the residential side of the industry before moving across into investment sales. He then went full circle, returning to general real estate in 2004-2005. “I stayed with Ray White until 2010 and spent my last four years with them I as their number one international sales person, mainly working in the residential prestige side of the industry,” he says. Having achieved such early success. Michael then took five years off to travel and explore other business opportunities, before he ‘got bored’ and returned to his chosen profession, launching Kollosche Prestige Agents with a business partner in January/February 2016. “We had good long-term relationships with a lot of clients, so it was a natural progression to move into the higher end of the market,” he says. “When we started up it was just going to be myself, my business partner and a couple

of Personal Assistants, but the business grew reasonably quickly and we ended up with about 400 sqm of office space and 20 staff.” Two years later, they separated the partnership and Michael created Kollosche. “I’m really enjoying building my own business on my own terms,” he admits. “I started with just 11 team members and we are currently sitting here with 65 of the most talented and passionate people in the industry. “We’ve built a great culture and everyone in our business collaborates and genuinely looks after each other’s interests.

It’s so rewarding seeing these transitions and how it’s changing their lives and their families lives but also helping a lot of clients along the way. – Michael Kollosche “It’s a rare thing to build something like this in a commission-based industry but as long as you make sure the people you are working with share a similar vision and you recruit culture first so the environment you create is somewhere that everyone is really going to enjoy working – then you just make sure to protect that.” And therein lies another ‘secret’. “To me culture is very important and we are pretty specific with our recruitment, we try to recruit humble people that have a good work ethic, with no egos and who are genuinely empathetic and want to help and collaborate,” he says. “And if that means occasionally turning away some agents that approach us, so be it. “In addition to that as much as we will go above and beyond for our clients, we have a philosophy in here that if someone’s mistreating you or disrespectful from the outset (which is rare), we don’t work with them, and instead we will tell them ‘no thank you’. Life's too short to be disrespected or mistreated.

“We are professionals, we work hard, we do everything possible to give everyone a really good experience but sometimes you’ll come across people that don’t appreciate that, or are used to dealing with people in a manner that we don’t enjoy, so we try to make the whole thing fun and we try to make sure everyone gets rewarded.” While he admits that some days have their challenges, and others have their rewards, there is rarely a day that Michael does not enjoying going into work. “I bounce out of bed at 4am every morning, I’m at the gym most mornings at 4.30 before heading into the office. “It’s been exciting and I’m really enjoying the experience of developing people. “I’ve had some guys who have been in the industry for ten or 12 years and they come across to our business and have increased their earnings by 5x to 6x in some instances within 12-18 months from the support, systems and training we provide. “It’s so rewarding seeing these transitions and how it’s changing their lives and their families lives but also helping a lot of clients along the way.” Given Michael’s current success, it begs the question … on a scale of 1-100 how happy are you with your life and your business? “I’d be in the late nineties on that at the moment,” Michael admits. “I won’t say 100 because I definitely haven’t achieved all my goals and ambitions but I’m very happy with the way everything is going, “I’m healthy, my family is great, we’re lucky to be in the position we’re in with our lifestyle and location on the Gold Coast, I’ve got a great business, I’ve got really good people around me and things are going from strength to strength so I get up and enjoy every day.” As for the future, Michael still has some big plans for the business. “We are in the process of opening up in Byron Bay and eyeing off Kingscliff for 2021,” he says. “We’ve got our first salesperson already on the ground in Byron doing deals since November 2020 and we are sourcing premises as well, “That will be the next big thing … to run between the NSW North Coast and the Gold Coast. “There is a lot of cross pollination within the markets so we hope to ultimately cover the entire region from Byron Bay to Sovereign Island.” Issue 82 – covemagazine.com.au

AMY SAYS HI

With a new album and a headline tour, Amy Shark is ready for a big 2021.

MUSIC SENSATION Amy Shark is a proud Gold Coaster. Having honed her skills in local venues across the region, the award-winning singer-songwriter is now sharing her talents with a wider audience – collaborating with international superstars, appearing on hit TV shows, headlining the entertainment at the 2020 NRL Grand Final, and picking up eight Aria Awards along the way.

Success has made me work harder than ever before. – Amy Shark With her new album, Cry Forever, due for release in April, and a headline Australian tour taking place later in the year, Amy shares some insights into her astounding success, and what audiences can expect from her shows.

What was the ‘tipping point’ that took you from being a Gold Coast musician to an Ariawinning artist? I released a song called ‘Adore’ in 2016 which was getting a lot of radio airplay and attention from the music industry. That song changed my life. What makes the Gold Coast ‘home’? The Gold Coast will always be home. I love spending time with my nan, nieces and nephew. Heading down to the beach or catching up with friends. You have collaborated with some amazing artists including Ed Sheeran and Travis Barker … how was that experience? Never in my wildest dreams did I think that I would be able to say I have collaborated with Ed Sheeran and Travis Barker. You can’t force collaborations, they have to happen naturally, so I am just so lucky that we worked so well together and made music that I am so proud of.

CRY FOREVER TOUR Amy will play HOTA, Gold Coast on Friday 25 June and Brisbane’s Riverstage on Saturday 26 June. To pre-order Amy’s new album, Cry Forever, and to purchase tickets to the Cry Forever Tour head to:

amyshark.com

Is there anyone else on your ‘wishlist’ that you would like to work with? Post Malone. How has COVID impacted you personally and as a performer? I was making a music video in Nashville when things started to take a turn so was incredibly lucky to get back to Australia before border closures. I have announced a COVID safe tour for 2021 which I am so excited for – I can’t wait to play live again and hope that brings some joy to families that have had a tough year. Personally, it’s been hard as I have been working mostly in Sydney and I have been separated from family and friends in Queensland. What does success mean to you? What would you still like to achieve in your career? I am really looking forward to heading back overseas to the US and UK. I have been so lucky to have had toured all over the world and I can’t wait to play bigger stages in those countries. You have a headline tour planned for 2021 … what are you most looking forward to and what can audiences expect? My album Cry Forever is out April 30, so I will have new material to play and I can’t wait to have the band back together after many, many months apart. An Amy Shark show is always a lot of fun but don’t forget to bring some tissues for the sad songs. Has success changed you and how do you stay grounded? Success has made me work harder than ever before. I am still a musician from the Gold Coast. I write songs on my guitar every day. Do you ever get starstruck? I did an interview with Elton John for his radio show once, that was pretty wild. I was sitting in his house and he was talking about my music, it was very surreal.

HEALTH

& WELLBEING 2021 is the year to embrace a happy and healthy lifestyle.

IF 2020 taught us anything, it’s that taking care of our physical and mental wellbeing is paramount to a happy and healthy life. Now, as we start a brand-new year, it is the perfect opportunity to put those practices to use … eating well, having regular check-ups and factoring down-time into our increasingly busy lifestyles. Perhaps it is time to embrace the Three Aspects of Mindfulness. • Intention – your intention is what you hope to get from practising mindfulness. • Attention – mindfulness is about paying attention to your inner or outer experience. • Attitude – mindfulness involves paying attention to certain attitudes, such as curiosity, acceptance and kindness. That doesn’t mean you have to completely rewire your thinking … small changes can also make a big difference to your health and wellbeing. Take a moment to appreciate the positive things in your life … keep a gratitude journal … catch up with a friend … reconnect with nature … whatever makes you feel good. Of course, it is equally important to take care of yourself on the health front, so why not enrol in an exercise program, have that long overdue chat with your GP or combine both the physical and mental aspects of wellbeing and head to a spa retreat for a rejuvenating few days. Whatever your state of mind or your situation, let’s all make 2021 the year of change (for the better). And if you are struggling, always remember the words of the visionary Nelson Mandela: "The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall."

HEALTH & WELLNESS

RELAX, RETREAT, REPEAT

Located high above Tallebudgera Valley, Gwinganna Lifestyle Retreat offers the ultimate wellness experience. WORDS BROOKE LOWTHER IT'S A TOUGH GIG when you are asked to do a travel segment on a lifestyle retreat that just took out the World's Best Eco Spa Winner 2020. I must admit when this came across my desk, I did not hesitate to put up my hand. The Gwinganna Lifestyle Retreat is set high on a plateau on over 200 hectares (500 acres) in a hidden region of the Tallebudgera Valley, a short 20-minute drive from Burleigh Heads into the hinterland. Renowned for its natural tranquility, this really is a beautiful area of the Gold Coast and driving up to the property, I almost automatically had a sense of calm. Going through the gates and up the windy driveway, every bit of my hectic day melted away as the smell of the fresh trees and clear air filled my car and my senses. I was greeted by welcoming staff whose calming presence and mannerisms softly brought my energy levels into check.

44 covemagazine.com.au

– Issue 82

I really did feel as though I was miles away from anywhere and could not believe a place like this existed here on the Gold Coast. The aim of the retreat is to help guests live a healthier life, reduce stress and enhance positive ageing. Each highly experienced staff member is handpicked to join the team of wellness professionals and there is a wide range of fully inclusive package options to help you essentially detox your mind, body and spirit. These include the popular seven-night Detox, a two-night Wellness Weekend or specialty retreats that focus on stress, nutrition, women's health, sleep or mindfulness. Plus you can enjoy delicious organic cuisine, diverse activities for all levels and exceptional spa and wellness therapies in this EcoTourism certified wellness retreat. Gwinganna of fers several premium accommodation styles in a dedicated retreat

setting surrounded by nature, with all options carrying a five-star rating. From the beautiful surrounds and special landscaping to the creative and environmentally sensitive architecture, Gwinganna has created a new benchmark with its exclusive indoor/outdoor 33 room Spa Sanctuary, the largest spa in the Southern Hemisphere. However, what I found most appealing was the level of service and care. On arrival I was taken to the very special Meditation suite – a space designed with an allocated area to allow meditation programs in your room. Once settled in with a welcome food platter, I was directed to the Spa to indulge in a detox massage which literally set my body into relax and unwind mode. I rarely fall asleep, however, I woke up an hour later in heaven.

PLAY VIDEO

The spa is designed to give you an exceptional experience from the moment you walk into the doors. You can choose from an extensive range of wellness services, from naturopathy to stress and emotional wellbeing. Or perhaps book a session with the retreat's experts in functional movement and physical activity. Floating on a cloud after my massage, I went to meet my fellow retreaters and was greeted by Sharon Kolkka who is Gwinganna's Wellness Advisor. Ms Kolkka helped create the layout – from the architecture to the food menu – and all the wellness seminars for each package. She explained that they have a vast array of guests from all walks of life. "A-list celebrities sit alongside everyday people here and everyone is treated the same," she explains.

I also had an opportunity to talk to other guests and most people were back on their 5th or 6th stay, having come to Gwinganna often over the past ten years. This spoke volumes to me and I loved that my first experience was with all these amazing people including frazzled mums, a high-profile businessman who had been there for over four weeks and two women on a girl's weekend celebrating a birthday. Gwinganna really is an ideal place for everyone wanting an alcohol and mobile phone-free experience. One thing I was worried about was the thought of going hungry. Being six foot tall with a metabolism to match, the possibility of eating sparse, tasteless and vegetarian-only dishes was a concern . This could not be further from the truth, with the menu offering the highest quality food and the portion sizes to match.

I was also impressed by the program that was arranged for me and my fellow guests. Nothing was compulsory, just suggested, and over the three days, we met for Qi Gong, went on discovery walks, chose to do yoga, take part in swimming and enjoy alone time. We could also listen to seminars, talk to the staff about the organic produce direct from the land, take part in meditation classes or book in for one of 30 or more massage and spa treatments. One personal experience for me, was having my tarot cards read. As a sceptic, I never thought I would have my past, present and future told to me so accurately. Gwinganna Lifestyle Retreat is a perfect place to gain complete perspective on health and wellbeing. I went away with an open mind, a patched-up broken heart and a positive, happy soul again.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

NEW ATTITUDES

Some timely advice on seeking happiness in 2021. WORDS DR ASHAR KHAN

COVID-19 has pushed the human race into ‘acting out’ a plethora of positive and negative attitudes. We have all struggled with the ‘A’ffective (emotional), ‘B’ehavioural, and ‘C’ognitive (thinking) pillars of what shapes our attitudes. It is true that the ‘B’ and ‘C’ of our attitudes were more or less hijacked by our policy makers with social distancing laws and hard border confinements. Yet, we still possess the most crucial ‘A’ pillar to define our sense of autonomous self as we sail into 2021. No doubt, COVID hit us with a brutal force and awe-deceptive force and the strength of our attitudes was put to the test. Introspection has made us aware of these confounding challenges shaping our attitudes. As a psychiatrist, I am trained to think Mind, Brain and Body. These reflective thoughts are my take on the situation. 2021 is going to be a crucial year in the definition of our fightback as a cohesive entity. However, we need not forget that adversity begets resilience. It is vital that for attitudes to be positive, we possess and seek knowledge. COVID has eroded into our happiness because we struggled with understanding it. It took us by surprise, perhaps, because we took it for granted. Indeed, we are still in a state of fear and frenzy as we try to fathom how a vertical transmission from the bat kingdom penetrated the otherwise impregnable human immune buffer zone. The good news is that we are still prevailing as we learn to adapt and cope. This is what we can do best And this is what can define us in 2021. It comes as no surprise that the famous American psychologist Garmezy coined the concept of human resilience from a study of schizophrenic children. These children upset the nihilistic thinkers of the time by insistence on life goals and seeking purpose, despite being hindered by their schizophrenia. Does it not make sense? Despite facing adversity of life, we cannot deny the pervasive resilience on display by children. Children keep smiling, plod along and insist on survival by negotiating fear and confusion at all stages of their upbringing.

46 covemagazine.com.au

– Issue 82

Garmezy referred to these resilient children as the ‘Invulnerables’. So how do we seek happiness in 2021? We have choices. We can choose to follow Freud and his emphasis on practicing altruism or humour as ‘mature’ defences. Perhaps, we could take some lessons from the world’s longest study in the quest for what guarantees happiness. The Harvard researchers tracked happiness in people over eight decades. The results showed happiness was consistently observed in those with ‘close’ or ‘closer’ human relationships. Indeed, the most robust studies of risk factors for vulnerability to depression have had one constant. It is our inherent need for a ‘confidante’. Hopelessness looms in the absence of confiding relationships. A drift to isolationism, loneliness, solitude or being alone, inevitably leads to a void of learned helplessness, hopelessness and anxiety. This is the nebula where depression lurks with its minus gravitational pull. In my years of practice, I’ve often taken a sigh of relief when I see a back-up ‘Hard Drive’ of spirituality in my patients when they are in distress. A tinge of their spirituality often reassures me that everything will be alright, even when my clinical head has red alerts echoing everywhere. Coping against uncertainty is also difficult to mobilise without a tinge of self-awareness, consistency and hope. This is where our spirituality exists. The access to our within is where our convictions and our values co-exist. Mankind has been bestowed with enough holy men, often with scriptures containing words of wisdom. These souls seem to have appeared from nowhere, just when the human race was facing fear and ambivalence. All eclectic spiritual systems were best echoed by Gandhi who believed that … “Character is who we truly are at times of inconvenience.” A quick visual imagery of Mandela, Buddha or Jesus has but one constant … an extremely reassuring subtle smile, not unlike what we see in the contentment of innocence in resilient children. Coping with the impasse of past hardship has required the essential virtues to adapt and to be tolerant.

Perhaps, now more than ever. Without to l e r a n ce, co n te n t m e n t cannot prevail. Without contentment, insight is lacking. Without insight , we s truggle to access wisdom. With no wisdom, existential fears corrupt our attitudes. With fear, nihilism prevails and hope becomes hopelessness. The latter may have even afflicted Freud when he tried to dismiss spirituality and religion as a ‘universal obsessional neurosis.’ Did neurosis ‘from’ the unknown beget neurosis ‘of’ the unknown beget Freud. Was Freud’s ambivalence of spirituality his brand of COVID strain at the time. Yet, there is all the reason to rejoice for us. We are not limited by our Mind, Body and Brain but perhaps it’s time to also access the soul and the spirit. We humans are wired to rebound and our wiring adapts and evolves which is why we persevere by coping and adapting. We are unique because we are dynamic, we are apt at being resilient, and so we prevail. We were all once children … perhaps part of us still is. Perhaps it is time to celebrate 2021 as the year of the ‘Invulnerables’.

FOCUS ON MEN

The Lotus Institute provide a comprehensive range of surgical and non-surgical procedures for their male clients.

MEN ARE CARING more about their appearance than ever before and the focus has now shifted to putting their best face forward. To do so, many are turning to surgical and non-surgical procedures to help get the look they want. It’s not uncommon for insecurities to arise for men just as they do for the ladies. So the question is, do men really get plastic surgery? The answer is yes. The three top plastic surgery categories for men are facial surgeries, male breast reduction and weight loss contouring. The ‘older and wiser’ men may turn to an eyelid lift (blepharoplasty) to remove or reposition the skin around the eye, resulting in a more alert and youthful look. Or they may kick it up a notch and undergo a full facelift, technically known as a rhytidectomy. This procedure lifts sagging skin, tightens facial muscles and reduces the effects of time and gravity, often taking years off of the face. Male breast tissue (gynecomastia) affects an estimated 40-60% of men. This procedure removes fat and or glandular tissue from the breasts, and in more extreme cases, the excess skin as well. If extra fatty tissue is the culprit, it is often removed by undergoing liposuction. Reaching your goal weight is a significant achievement, whether through diet and exercise or weight loss surgery. But after losing a lot of weight, you may notice some excess skin left behind. You may call it your spare tyre or love handles. Interestingly enough, that ‘spare tyre’ can

actually be due to hormonal changes that can cause this area to become very dense and resistant to diet and exercise so many men are now turning to body contouring procedures, including tummy tuck, liposuction or lower body lift, which may help improve shape and tone. The non-surgical cosmetic procedures available at The Lotus Institute include injectable muscle relaxants designed to soften fine lines and wrinkles, and dermal fillers for enhancing facial volume. All cosmetic surgery is performed by qualified plastic surgeons with extensive experience in cosmetic procedures, assisted by a highly skilled team of friendly nursing and patient care staff.

You’ll find the service provided by Lotus’ support staff is second to none. Their patients all receive personalised care throughout their procedure and recuperation period. It’s all part of the Lotus experience. When you choose The Lotus Institute for your surgery, you're not just choosing an experienced clinic; you're choosing a team who truly cares about your entire transformative experience. Be empowered to uncover the best version of you in a safe, understanding environment where your needs are prioritised. The Lotus Institute strive to make every patient happy with their outcome.

PERFECT SOLUTIONS

Boutique Helensvale clinic offering high-quality dentistry. GC DENTAL SOLUTIONS lead dentist Dr Michael Sempf boasts over 25 years’ experience in the industry and has a unique and distinct vision for his brand-new clinic. “I didn’t want to create just another stock standard dental clinic,” he explains. “When a patient enters our practice for the first time, I want them to know instantly that this clinic is different.” The waiting room at GC Dental Solutions has been designed to look and feel more like a hotel foyer, not a traditional clinical setting. “The intention of this is twofold,” Dr Sempf says. “Firstly, the relaxed lounge setting puts nervous minds at ease. “And just as important, I want them to know that they are in a place they will be taken care of, a place they can receive quality dentistry by someone they can trust.” The clinic offers the full range of dental services, however, Dr Sempf’s specific interest lies in the provision of dental implant treatment.

Having received advanced training in this field, implant dentistry remains a dominant component of his practice. “We have invested in the latest cone beam CT 3d imaging to assess patient’s anatomy,” he says. “This allows us to plan implant treatment with more accuracy and certainty than was previously possible. This translates to safer surgery and better outcomes for our patients.” Dr Sempf explains that, without doubt, his favourite implant procedure is the All on 4. “When appropriate, this can be a lifechanging and an aesthetically rewarding procedure,” he says. “Essentially it involves placing four dental implants into the jaw which then support a full set of teeth. The big attraction for patients is this can occur in just two days, and the surgical component Is done when they are asleep. “In general, it is suitable for patients currently wearing full dentures, or those who are soon to lose their teeth.”

Most adults will experience an episode of acute lower back pain at some stage in their lives. Acute lower back pain is defined as pain of a duration less than three months. The general practitioner can effectively manage the majority of episodes. In general, a brief period of relative rest followed by progressive mobilisation and return to activities is advised. This can be aided by input from a physiotherapist or other allied health professional. Recommended first-line analgesics include Panadol and NSAIDs. For more severe pain short term use of a muscle relaxant may be beneficial. Opioids should be avoided if possible. In the absence of red flags (please see below) or associated sciatica, imaging of the spine is not required immediately. The vast majority of episodes of acute lower back pain will settle over 6-12 weeks with no residual pain or disability. Patients with suspected serious pathology should be investigated with appropriate imaging and pathology tests and if required, referred to a specialist for urgent review.

When to refer •

Any patient with acute lower back pain and associated red flags should be investigated and referred urgently. If there is suspicion of Infection, Cauda Equina Syndrome or Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm referral straight to hospital is appropriate.

In a patient with severe sciatica not settling over a 1-2 week period or with associated unilateral motor weakness, a semi-urgent referral can be considered.

Lower back pain in the absence of red flags that is not improving over a 6-12 week period can be referred for further assessment.

• Total disc replacement • Minimally invasive posterior fusion

Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm

The Role of Surgery A patient with Cauda Equina Syndrome requires urgent surgery to decompress the neural elements. Patients with vertebral infection, vertebral fracture or metastatic cancer may also require urgent surgery although non-operative treatment may also be appropriate for these conditions. Acute lower back pain in the absence of any serious underlying condition is always managed non-operatively. Surgery is only considered for chronic back pain and sciatica that is significantly impacting a person’s quality of life and has not improved with appropriate non-operative treatments.

Robotic Surgery: Gynaecology A Fact Sheet by Dr Erlich Sem

Gold Coast Private Hospital 14 Hill Street, Southport QLD 4215 P 07 5530 0300 | F 07 5530 0646 goldcoastprivatehospital.com.au

Leading Gold Coast Private Obstetrician and Gynaecologist Dr Erlich Sem provides the most up-to-date Robotic Surgical options for patients with Gynaecological conditions, including: • Endometriosis • Tubal Reanastomosis

• Colpopexy with hysterectomy • Myomectomy

What are the benefits of Robotic Surgery? The system allows the surgeon’s hand movements to be scaled, filtered and translated into precise movements of micro-instruments within the operative site. The robotic instruments are “wristed” and have greater range of motions compared to human hands. These improved ergonomics helps to overcome the limitations of traditional laparoscopy. The surgeon’s vision is greatly enhanced with 3D and high definition camera system, allowing better identification of pathology, such as endometriosis. These improvements are associated with reduced surgical time, improved and safer dissection of delicate tissues and less post-operative pain.

How is it performed? Robot-assisted surgery mimics the surgeon’s hands with robotic arms performing scaled-down, tiny movements within the body. The surgeon remains 100 percent in control of the operation, but the robot provides optimised 3D vision, magnification and motion tremor control, allowing the surgeon to operate high-tech instrumentation with greater dexterity and precision. The surgeon guides the procedure from a master console which controls robotic arms with attached surgical instruments.

Is there additional cost? For most insured patients, there is no difference in cost when compared to standard laparoscopic approach.

In any event, an eventual drop in the market will likely be more moderate than during the Global Financial Crisis of 2007-2008 when the absence of liquidity and capital meant the market fell sharply before prices hit a bottom.

agent who is not offering the opportunity to reassess the true value of your lease, our team can let you know what your property is really worth.

Record demand for real estate across all sectors on the Gold Coast in the second half of 2020 shows every sign of continuing well into the new year. Australia’s love affair with lifestyle property has ramped up over the summer as buyers take the time to physically inspect real estate while enjoying the sun, surf and sand the Gold Coast is so famous for.

Sellers hold the hot seat The Gold Coast prestige sector is poised for a strong start in 2021 off the back of the highest levels of capital growth this market has seen in 12 years. Stock levels are extremely tight, median days on market are significantly lower than the same time last year and vendor discounting has dropped. Low interest rates are driving people to deploy capital into other assets which is further fueling demand and limiting supply. Prestige properties on the beachfront, main river and in the hinterland are achieving consistently strong price points as demand continues to outstrip supply. Predicting how long the market will maintain such buoyancy is not an exact science. Some are saying that as government stimulus falls away we will 2

Premium prices for rentals Kollosche’s property management team is consistently achieving excellent returns for landlords at the top end of town. Locals selling their homes to capitalise on a hot market combined with a swathe of interstate migrants keen to ‘try before they buy’ are jointly driving intense demand for luxury houses and apartments for lease in key suburbs. Rental market conditions on the Gold Coast are the tightest they’ve been since March 2018 - on last report vacancy rates had fallen to just 1.3 per cent across the city and less than one per cent in several popular beachside suburbs. The State’s regional areas are also currently outperforming major metropolitan areas when it comes to rental demand. In the lead up to Christmas, all available stock on our books had been leased. Anyone who is currently renting a property, or considering putting a property up for lease, is invited to discuss their options with our property management team, who

For example, I am aware of properties rented for $1500 which would fetch $2000 if leased in the current market. With 10-20 applications on certain properties, those landlords are in a position to be saying, “make me an offer” to truly maximise their capital.

Capturing the Byron Bay market In 2021, the Kollosche team continues to extend our reach south over the border into the Byron Shire, a market which presents rich pickings in the prestige property department. It’s a relatively tight market but one which would appear to benefit from the work ethic, systems and structure that Kollosche is known for. Our existing network of high-end clients here on the Gold Coast, as well as those in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne, will benefit from the cross-pollination that Byron Bay offers. Many Gold Coast and Brisbane residents have holiday homes in the Byron Shire while those from southern states tend to cast the net between Byron and the Sunshine Coast. Having a pool of stock spanning Byron Bay to the northern Gold Coast puts Kollosche in a prime position to better service existing and new clients.

Our agent on the ground Matthew Skene, supported by southern beachfront specialist Troy Dowker, has a solid track record in negotiating successful sales and achieving premium prices for vendors. His valuable knowledge of the Byron market is underpinned by a corporate background in sales and marketing for multi-nationals such as Lion Nathan and Cisco Systems. An eight-year career playing rugby in Italy and rugby league in Australia no doubt contributes to Matt’s competitive determination in the real estate arena. Matt has hit the ground running for Kollosche with some exciting listings in the sought-after Byron hinterland offering privacy, stellar views and easy access to the relaxed beachside lifestyle the region is so famous for. We look forward to what is shaping up to be another record year of growth, exceptional service and sales success. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch with our team to discuss your next sale, purchase or leasing goals.

It was that picturesque backdrop which, in 2017, captured the hearts of owners Tim and Karin Gordon, who saw immense potential in the rundown Queenslander homestead and its stunning surrounds. “We were drawn to the natural beauty of the property,” Tim said. “The Coomera River runs around the perimeter plus it has some incredible open space, as well as the polo field and the functionality for keeping horses.”

Three of five bedrooms in the main residence have their own ensuites while the deluxe master suite opens to a wrap-around verandah where a sunset vista pairs perfectly with a chilled glass of bubbles.

“When we’re not using it, we’ve got a full-time manager who handles the commercial side of the business,” Tim said. “Rivermead is well-known in Sydney and Melbourne circles as a desirable and extremely private property to use as a family retreat to get away from city life. “Guests are coming to Rivermead instead of travelling overseas. We had one Sydney group stay who rated the experience as being better than their time in the Mediterranean on a superyacht. That was an amazing compliment.” Rumours that Hollywood actor Tom Hanks and his entourage were selfisolating at Rivermead during the COVID-19 had created a buzz of media interest, with any plans to quarantine at the estate scuppered by the Queensland Government decision not to grant special exemptions.

“There is no other property like it on the Gold Coast.”

“The location for me was also very important – being 30 minutes from Surfers Paradise, 50 minutes to Brisbane and 30 minutes from our home in Mermaid Beach, it’s very accessible.” Drawing on Tim’s background in building and property development and Karin’s flair for interior design, the couple embarked on a major renovation of the six-bedroom homestead in a style reflecting the casual luxury of Hawaii’s iconic plantation properties. “The old homestead was somewhat dilapidated but the bones of the building itself were solid and it has a beautiful history with different owners over

TOP OF THE MOUNTAIN

CUISINE

For those of us who live on the coastal fringe, the Gold Coast hinterland offers a completely different range of activities to enjoy.

Fox & Hounds Country Inn

WORDS & PHOTOGRAPHY MARJ OSBORNE IT’S THE GREEN BEHIND THE GOLD, a lush hinterland of rainforest, waterfalls and rich farming land that extends back behind the Gold Coast beaches. While the sands and rolling surf of the coast have their own dynamism, so too does the hinterland. Forced up by the ancient volcanoes, steep escarpments look down over verdant pastures whose volcanic soils raise crops to feed city dwellers. It’s time to reconnect with the beauty of Mt Tamborine again. During a couple of days away, we include bushwalking and nature experiences, award-winning wineries and upmarket cafés in our itinerary. On the way up to the mountain, we visit The Fox and Hounds Country Inn, a piece of Mother England transported here piece by piece. We dine on a hearty Beef and Guinness Pie and Pork Ribs with beer-battered fries under the watchful eye of Queen Victoria.

There is a stuffed stoat peering at us from the mantelpiece above the fireplace, palace guards making sure our behaviour is civil, and football scarves hanging from the ceiling. In quite an extensive menu of British favourites, a standout is an authentic Pork Pie made by Tony Wensley, former Bakery Manager of Melton Mowbray’s ‘Ye Olde Pork Pie Shoppe’, whose customers include Queen Elizabeth. This is ‘fine fayre’ indeed, but now it’s time to venture outdoors to walk off lunch. As well as the delightful Tamborine Mountains Botanic Gardens, there are many bushwalks to do in the Mount Tamborine area with varying degrees of difficulty giving access to waterfalls, views and different types of flora, fauna and scenery. Tamborine Rainforest Skywalk offers one of the area’s most accessible experiences of the rainforest, suitable for almost everyone. We depart from the Eco Gallery with its educational displays and walk 1.5km along its suspended steel walkways and forest floor trails.

Birdwing butterflies can be seen skimming from tree to tree, bird calls reminding us of the forest’s diverse but elusive wildlife. Midway through the trail we reach a 40m long cantilevered span finishing in a platform soaring 30m above the valley. With spectacular views through the rainforest canopy to the creek below, this is one of the most exhilarating rainforest experiences we have enjoyed. The Scenic Rim is a renowned as one of Southeast Queensland’s food bowls, producing a huge range of gourmet delights. As we travel around Mt Tamborine, we stop at farmgate stalls along the roadside selling their produce on an ‘honour’ system. A range of cafés and restaurants on the mountain serve excellent produce-driven meals with winery cellar doors offering tasting opportunities to thirsty travellers. Mason Wines at Mt Tamborine venue is one of their three cellar doors owned by the Ballandean Mason winery. >> Issue 82 – covemagazine.com.au

CUISINE The restaurant, once the old winery and barrel room, is now a dining room complete with fireplace and an alfresco deck overlooking an idyllic vineyard estate. Its restaurant serves excellent meals as well as share platters of local produce that are perfect fare for vineyard grazing. Local suppliers are championed in a guide to provenance on the menu, the restaurant intent on sourcing the best ingredients from local markets, producers and suppliers. Be sure to try the ‘pièce de resistance’, the Melting Chocolate Egg from Pastry Chef Tammy Cole. With fabulous food and friendly attentive service, Mason Wines joins some of the best vineyard experiences we’ve enjoyed around Australasia. Craft spirits are all the rage, so we visit one of Australia’s most famous and internationally awarded distilleries, Tamborine Mountain Distillery. Founded in 1993, Tamborine Mountain Distillery’s liqueurs have been awarded many Gold Medal wins in world spirit awards in Europe, America and Asia. In 2019 new owners moved the distillery and tasting rooms to a purpose-renovated building just off Gallery Walk. Retaining its artisanal processes, the distillery uses natural ingredients and Australian native fauna to make their 70-strong range of liqueurs. There is a new emphasis on sustainability, and a move towards export and experiential tourism at the venue with distillery tours soon to commence. We are booked into Witches Falls Cottages to stay in a split-level Rainforest Spa Cottage, one of eight completely private cottages set in two acres of rainforest on the edge of Queensland’s oldest national park. There is no need to go anywhere, as a self-cook BBQ hamper can be arranged, accompanied by a premium bottle of local Witches Falls shiraz. From a double spa in the glass-roofed bathroom which opens out onto a private walled garden and BBQ area to the comfortable bed and wood-fired fireplace, the cottages offer an intimate adults-only experience. In the morning, a complimentary BBQ or gourmet breakfast hamper is delivered to each cottage, a loaf of fresh homemade bread bringing a touch of love to the hamper. Witches Falls Cottages are a Scenic Rim ‘Locavore’ accredited establishment, so it is no surprise that the provenance of the hamper contents is included in the pack. While the Gold Coast is renowned for its coffee culture, many of us don’t know that the 2019 Golden Bean for Australian/NZ Grown Coffee was awarded to coffee at Tamborine Mountain Coffee Plantation. It’s the highest single honour a bean can receive from the largest competition in the world. As 99 per cent of the coffee we drink is made from imported beans, we are honoured to try Tamborine Mountain’s awardwinning coffee as part of a Coffee Tasting Board at the plantation’s café. From a Crop-to-Cup plantation tour and meal to a brew sampling or cocktails on the deck, the Tamborine Mountain Coffee Plantation experience has the flexibility to meet a variety of tourists’ needs. Too soon our short break is over, a mix of adventure, education and indulgence. There are so many more places off the beaten track to explore another time … all this, just a short drive from Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

WINE CELLAR

WISH-LIST WINES

Fine French Andre Clouet wines are now available in Australia. WORDS TONY HARPER

REIMS. That magical city in the northern part of the Champagne district, home to legendary houses like Krug, Louis Roederer, Pommery, Taittinger, Ruinart; the Cathedral Notre Dame de Reims that was the coronation-place for a thousand years of French kings; an explosion of art deco architecture; restaurants and bistros; history that stretches back beyond the romans. It seems like a lifetime ago (I guess it nearly is), but I stayed there during the autumn of 1995, seeing the sights but more importantly visiting champagne producers. I had it all lined up – a visit with Prince Alain de Polignac (yep ... a real prince, and also head of the House of Pommery) and a wander through Pommery’s incredible chalk cellars; lunch – a little further south – with Christian Pol Roger; a comprehensive tasting at Louis Roederer; and, the most thrilling for me, a visit with Catherine Seydoux at Krug. The twist in this self-indulgent reminiscence happened at breakfast one morning. We were staying at a small but comfortable hotel near the heart of the city, and the young lady in charge knew I was there to explore the wines. You must, she said, visit my cousins in Bouzy. They make wonderful wines. She arranged it. We went. Bouzy is a small, old, rather pretty village in the Montagne de Reims. It’s population hovers around 1000, but it has an importance that belies its small stature thanks to the extraordinarily good Pinot Noir grown within its borders. The ‘cousins’ owned (and still own) a small, self-sufficient (this bit is important, especially before the rise of the ‘Grower Champagnes’ when almost all houses sourced a large part of their production from contracted grape-growers) house named Andre Clouet. I’d never heard of it. At the time its wines didn’t make it to Australia – but an afternoon with Jean-Francois Clouet put its wines at the front of my wish-list. We left late in the day with a boot laden with Andre Clouet champagnes, and a case of 1988 Bouzy Rouge … not champagne ... Pinot Noir. Wine made in the warmer years, and a wine I can still, if I put my mind to it, taste. After we left Champagne, we travelled south through all sorts of country. But each lunchtime we’d stop by a stream and chill a bottle of Bouzy rouge in its waters.

After six weeks of roaming France and immersing myself in its vineyards and wines, I thudded back home. And for the following decade I harangued every decent importer I knew to bring Andre Clouet to Australia. Now, 25 years later (a small passing of time when you consider that the house was founded nearly 300 years ago) it is here, not quite in abundance, but in decent supply. The heart of the Clouet wines is Grande Reserve, a non/multi-vintage wine made solely from Pinot Noir. In champagne terms it is inexpensive, $65 - $80 retail depending on where you shop. The trick, I reckon, is in the impeccable vineyards that the Clouet household maintain, and the understanding Jean-Francois has of those vineyards and the inherent grapes. It’s a rich wine, capable of pairing with red meats and the headiest of seafoods. But it’s also racy, lively, energetic ... easy enough to guzzle alone while lying by the pool. There’s a rose — also rich, and beautifully coloured, like watermelon tinged with bitters. And Silver – a version of the Grande Reserve, but with zero dosage ... bone dry, which is a trick that’s hard to pull off but here it is managed beautifully; again, testament to the quality of the fruit. However, it’s the special wines that really set Andre Clouet apart, and they are a wonderfully eccentric collection. Let’s begin with Dream Vintage. Andre Clouet – like every other champagne

house – produces a vintage wine in the better years. Dream Vintage is a series of wines that turn the whole philosophy of the house on its head. In amongst the Pinot Noir vines lie small plantings of Chardonnay on calcium-rich soils. The grapes are generally used to enhance the Pinot Noir in the Andre Clouet Vintage. Whereas Dream Vintage wines are made solely from Chardonnay – bright, fine, elegant. The feminine wine in a masculine team. Then there is V6. Made entirely from Pinot Noir, to is aged for 6 years on its lees before release. In the words on Jean-Francois ... “Pinot Noir does not mature directly, in linear fashion. Upon reaching its 6th year, it passes into a phase known as 'The Whirlwind’. Propelled by an unseen force it reaches outward, taking on another dimension. The wine becomes charged with energy and vibrations. “It glows … and becomes transcendent. “Deep, bright, effervescent … Taking off and on approach to Celestial Harmony. “As you taste it, prepare yourself to be launched like a rocket ship toward a mysterious, resplendent Star-shine, emanating from the Pinot Noir Galaxy. “3.2.1 ... Blast off!” But the jewel in the Clouet crown is surely 1911. Made to emulate the wines from the early 20th Century, it is an amalgam of more than ten vintages, blended together and aged on lees until ready. “It’s a rich, multi-faceted, decadent wine, packaged beautifully in gold livery, wrapped in straw, and packed into wooden boxes. “Once upon a time, a few precious bottles were hidden away in a small cellar for more than 80 years. By a stroke of luck they were found and became the inspiration for a champagne tribute to the Golden Age we like to call ‘One day in 1911’. “We were overcome with sentimental nostalgia when we recovered those bottles, saving them from oblivion. Memories of old Aunt Jenny came flooding back. She had always spoken about them with a sparkle in her eye, remembering their presence at every resplendent celebration and happy occasion during those dazzling early years of the 1900s.” Over two decades after I first tasted the wines from Andre Clouet, I am still in love with them. Unlike the beautiful but predictable wines from the large houses, these are quirky, personality laden gems. Wines from great vineyards, and history in their DNA.

WELL TRAVELLED

FINDING ME UNDER THE SEA For Brooke Lowther, a scuba diving experience in Cairns was both beautiful and cathartic.

PLAY VIDEO

WORDS BROOKE LOWTHER PHOTOGRAPHY NAOTO JACK FUKUSHIMA COVID-19 … that one word can bring frustrations, relief, opportunity, disappointment, separation, and maybe, just maybe, finding new friends, and a soul mate. The slogan around COVID-19 is, ‘we are all in this together ‘– let me tell you not one person is living the same life, with the same set of circumstances. The beginning of my travel story may sound an odd starting point, however it sets the scene to how I ended up in Cairns, overcoming my demons, finding someone who held my hand and took me out of the darkness, even if only for a moment in time, and allowed me to believe that magical travel destinations can be found in our very own backyard. First let me rewind … in November, 2019 I began planning my first lot of overseas trips. This was my diary - Singapore - February, India - March (I did that). Next it was Tuscany – 100km Charity walk May; Queenstown - Skiing - September; Greece - the whole month of January 2021. But then the coronavirus hit . With my travel plans shut down literally by a pandemic – I turned to new and exciting work opportunities. As fate would have it, a flight from Sydney

to Brisbane before the borders closed would change my life for the better, as I ended up working with the man I met onboard. Then a business trip to Cairns transformed my outlook forever. First stop the hotel. The Pullman Sea Temple Hotel at Port Douglas is a five-star resort with breathtaking views and accommodates couples, families and studio living right through to individual apartments. The resort has its very own inhouse spa and the beautiful Alouco Restaurant and Bar, not to mention one of the best swimming pools I have ever seen. What I was really excited about was the opportunity to do some activities outside the resort. Those that know me, know I am always up for adventure and trying new and exciting things so my friend planned a very special day onboard the beautiful Ocean Freedom charter boat. Ocean Freedom offer an array of options for people of all levels including cruising for the day, snorkelling and scuba diving. All the gear is provided and food and drinks are also included. What I didn’t know was that my friend also planned two scuba dives for us.

I had once told him about my previous dive experience in New Zealand where I had no license and dived with a group of boys who swam off and left me, so my nerves set in after that. In the past I was also unfortunately held under water in a bathtub for longer than usual to the point where I was not sure if I was going to be let up to breathe. So, my level of anxiety about going under water kicked into overdrive. Pushing all this aside, I remembered how much I love the water, what a great swimmer I am and how I have always enjoyed surfing, the beach and the waves. The challenge was on … After our scuba briefing we were set. Gearing up and getting ready was the easy part, jumping in and regulating was the next step. At this point I began my panic attack. Hyperventilating, thoughts of being back in that bathtub overcame me until my friend swam around, looked deep into my eyes, held my hands and instilled a sense of trust. An immense feeling of letting go from my past and present traumas filled my body. My breathing slowed, my goggles unfogged and for the first time I opened my heart and mind to see the world in a new light.

Calypso – Resort & Swimwear

We began to swim towards the coral, and I saw a life free from pain, stubborn thoughts and ideas that have no meaning. Watching families of fish, a turtle floating through the water and life under the sea I began to realise how rigid and stuck I had become. I was being taken to a new world of less drama, one that was more easy going and free flowing. The feeling of lightness that came over me was the turning point. After popping up from the first dive, enjoying a freshly made seafood platter and a relaxing drink onboard Ocean Freedom, there was a chance to snorkel and do one more scuba dive. This dive was when I truly let go. My hand wasn’t being held, I was diving on my own for the first time and became one within myself. I finally found ME under the sea.

RETRO-MOD CLASSICS

When too much is never enough, top-end car makers rise to the challenge, writes Chris Nixon.

ARE YOU IMPRESSED by the latest Bentley, which has just chugged out of the factory in Crewe, England? Or do you prefer something with a roof, like the Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato? Car enthusiasts can have virtually anything they like as manufacturers create ever more indulgent temptations to satisfy buyers with unlimited budgets. When a common-or-garden Ferrari isn’t enough to make you stand out, why not pick up the keys to Eagle’s re-invented E-Type Jaguar? Yours for around $1 million (depending on variant), if you don’t mind waiting a few years. Limited editions aren’t a new thing, used traditionally by marketers to help clear a run-out model by adding a few blingy enhancements.

68 covemagazine.com.au

But the spor ts car aristocracy – mainly the British so far – have taken the ploy to new heights by offering very exclusive, ret ro - t heme d mo dels w i t h highl y profitable margins. As with all ultra-prestige consumer goods, price seems to be no obstacle here. In fact it might be an incentive. It’s an odd triusm that for some buyers an extravagant price is proof alone that an object promises value for money. It’s expensive, so it must be good. But of course, to continue to make money, the cycle of exclusivity must continue. So one never-to-be-repeated, handbuilt limited edition will be superseded in time by a different one, only better.

Although time will tell whether these retro re-creations acquire the same collector appeal as the originals, there’s no question they’re actually fair value and superior in every aspect except provenance. For instance, you’ll need almost $20 million to buy a genuine, original 1960 Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato. It’s rare, it’s beautiful and its provenance is enhanced by a successful period racing record. In 2019, Aston Martin Heritage started making a further 19 ‘continuations’ from scratch. Except for the $11 million price, they’re identical to the original in every obvious detail, but inevitably built with superior materials and techniques to drive better and last longer. The craftsmanship is second-to-none.

Oh, and for $11 million you actually get two Aston Martins. The second car, for everyday use, is a current DBS GT Zagato. Jaguar employed nine unused chassis numbers for a run of ‘new’ XK SS roadsters, forerunner of the iconic E-Type. Steve McQueen owned one. The new cars were probably all snapped up before they were built, I’d wager by investors or show-offs; genuine car enthusiasts would find better value and usefulness elsewhere. But you can’t argue that about the current favourites, the Eagle E-Type and Singer Porsche 911. These come under the description of retro-mod, which usually means cars from the 50s, 60s or 70s that hide modified or modernised mechanicals under subtly re-styled classic bodywork. >> Issue 82– covemagazine.com.au

Jaguar, there’s the evergreen Morgan and even Spain’s historic Hispano Suiza name is being revived in a modern sports car. Another company has won the rights to make an upscale version of the old square-rigged Land-Rover, now to be called the Grenadier. If ever the likes of Ferrari, Maserati, Porsche or Mercedes-Benz re-make their greatest cars of the 50s, markets would go crazy. Meanwhile, the Bentley introduced at the beginning of this article is perhaps the most extreme new-old classic. The magnificent ‘new’ 1930 Bentley, car ‘0’ of just 13 in the so-called Blower Continuation Series, has been copied in minute 3D-scanned detail from an original 1929 car, which was dismantled for the job.

options, was joined in a special order with a Black Badge Dawn convertible ($802,000) in Hawaii-inspired Eagle Rock Red and Black Badge Cullinan SUV ($754,000) in South America-inspired Mirabeau Blue in a special order for American clients. Someone has an awesome garage … Beyond the initial order, Rolls-Royce is offering only three more examples of each of the so-called Neon Lights colours worldwide – although I bet they’re sold long before this edition of Cove hits the streets.

Some 2000 parts have been hand-made and pictures show the vehicle is indistinguishable from the master. Only four or five racing Blowers were believed built originally, using a 4.5 litre supercharged (‘Blower’) engine. The most famous example was driven by ‘Bentley Boy’ Sir Henry Ralph Stanley Birkin in races all over Europe, including the Le Mans 24 Hours, which he won. Now, fashion tycoon Ralph Lauren owns one. In 2012, Birkin’s personal Blower sold for five million Pounds, so the modern example appears a bargain at an estimated $2.7 million. It might be a copy, but it’s exquisite. What are you waiting for?

Fear not if you’ve missed out. These three cars are – literally – shimmering examples of the bespoke capabilities of the world’s most exclusive car maker. Think up your own colour – brown snake, lorikeet, parrot fish? – and Rolls can probably match it. (For a price.) Traditionalists might be harrumphing into their single-malts, but Rolls-Royce is showing a younger buying audience that Black Badge doesn’t have to mean black.

THE TIMEKEEPER’S TIMEPIECE

As the 36th edition of the ‘America’s Cup approaches, OMEGA has announced its role as the event’s Official Timekeeper.

DATING BACK TO 1851, the America’s Cup is renowned as the oldest trophy in international sport and has become the source of fierce rivalries and spectacular sailing duels. Set to take place in New Zealand from 6 - 21 March 2021, the 36th America's Cup will see competitors sailing in AC75, 75 foot foiling monohulls, with the course stretching across Auckland’s Waitemata Harbour. As the next edition of the ‘Auld Mug’ approaches, the Swiss watchmaker OMEGA

has announced its appointment as the event’s Official Timekeeper. This will mark the third time in history that OMEGA has served in the prestigious sailing role, since the brand began its partnership with Emirates Team New Zealand in 1995. Returning to New Zealand in 2021, OMEGA’s timekeeping excellence and long experience in sailing is sure to be highlighted through new technologies and never-seen-before equipment that will enhance every second of racing.

The moment will also provide another chance for OMEGA to celebrate its long-standing partnership with Emirates Team New Zealand. This special relationship began alongside the legendary sailor Sir Peter Blake, and has continued for 25 years, with a shared passion for innovation, technology, speed and accuracy. Speaking about the announcement, OMEGA President and CEO Raynald Aeschlimann said the America’s Cup has a truly special place within the OMEGA brand.

“From ingenuity and precision through to the competitive energy and history, every part of it appeals to our spirit,” he said. “We are very excited about our role in March and also for the chance to be onboard with Emirates Team New Zealand once again.” CEO of the Defender Emirates Team New Zealand, Grant Dalton, was also buoyed by the appointment. “We’ve worked with OMEGA for many years now and we truly respect their high standards of excellence,” he said. “We know they’ll bring a lot of experience to the event. “Our goal is to have the very best people for every part of the 36th America’s Cup presented by Prada. “The choice of OMEGA was obvious. They not only have a distinguished history as the Official Timekeeper of the Olympic Games, but they have also established themselves as the leader of timekeeping on the water.” OMEGA has always been anchored by a strong ocean heritage that extends back to the early days of the brand. >>

Long before its connection to sailing began, OMEGA created the world’s first commercially available divers’ watch in 1932 and therefore became the choice of many ocean explorers and professional divers at the time. Since then, OMEGA’s ocean-ready watches have been loved and trusted by men and women all over the world, including those in the British Royal Navy, fields of science, and legends of the sea such as Jacques Cousteau. It’s therefore no surprise that OMEGA’s achievements above and below the waves naturally progressed to a passion for sailing. For more than 25 years, OMEGA has been very much involved with sailing thanks to its timekeeping prowess, its sponsorship of various races, and its long-term partnerships. From rookies to race-hardened veterans, sailors from all levels of the sport have taken to the water knowing that OMEGA is there in support.

The brand proudly backs entire crews, such as Emirates Team New Zealand, Alinghi and Switzerland’s Team Tilt. It has served as Official Timekeeper at world class events such as the America’s Cup, the Ocean Race and the Olympic Games. From supporting the efforts of just one sailor, such as Dame Ellen MacArthur when she broke the solo round-the-world record in 2005, to promoting the sport on a global level, OMEGA is a trusted name on deck and its distinctive logo is a common sight on sails.

TIME TO SET SAIL To commemorate the 36th America’s Cup, contested by Emirates Team New Zealand in Auckland, OMEGA has released the brand-new Seamaster Planet Ocean 36th America’s Cup Limited Edition. As well as paying tribute to OMEGA’s role as Official Timekeeper, the limitededition timepiece draws inspiration from the colours of the event’s logo: an impression of the ‘Auld Mug’ in red, white and blue. Appropriately limited to just 2,021 pieces, the certified Master Chronometer sports a white polished ceramic dial with 36th AMERICA’S CUP transferred at 6 o’clock, encircled by a blue ceramic bezel ring with diving scale, 5-minute countdown and START indication highlighted in white and red liquid ceramic. PROPERTY PORTFOLIO

MOVING

UP

There's life in the property market after all.

WORDS NICK NICHOLS TO PLAY on the words of famed American author Mark Twain, reports of the property market's death have been greatly exaggerated. A case in point is the ANZ Bank which in 2020 delivered a dire forecast that capital city house prices would fall by 10 per cent. That was in May, when the outlook was swayed by the national COVID-19 lockdown and fears that a sharp drop in immigration and household incomes would lead to weaker demand. At the time, ANZ senior economist Felicity Emmett was expecting prices would bottom out in mid-2021. However, her view dramatically changed by November. With some humility, the ANZ senior economist had declared her earlier forecast was 'too pessimistic'.

76 covemagazine.com.au

– Issue 82

Not only is Ms Emmett not expecting a drop in prices, the outlook has taken a complete 180degree turn. ANZ is now expecting gains of about 9 per cent in 2021 – with Perth, Hobart and Brisbane likely to see the most robust growth among the capitals. "House prices are turning higher, helped by lower interest rates, substantial government stimulus and a bounce in confidence as the second wave of the pandemic comes under control," says an ANZ report co-authored by Ms Emmett. "These factors seem to be offsetting weak fundamentals of high unemployment, very low population growth and a fractured rental market." This new enthusiasm for the market was backed up by Australian Bureau of Statistics data which shows the value of new home loans hit a record high of $22.7 billion in October 2020.

This was 23.3 per cent higher than a year earlier. The numbers were driven by government stimulus for first-home owners and by the HomeBuilder program which has been extended by three months to the end of March 2021, albeit at a lower rate. Even SQM Research, which is notoriously cautious in its forecasts, has chimed in with a positive outlook. Both SQM and ANZ agree that Perth is the pick of the capitals in 2021 with expected gains of 8-12 per cent next year, followed by Sydney (7-11 per cent) and Adelaide (6-10 per cent). Even the lowest-ranked capital, Melbourne, is expected to eke out gains of between 2 and 6 per cent, says SQM. The researcher is pinning its forecast on the current 'aggressive government stimulus' and it

is a best-case scenario based on that stimulus remaining in place. Property prices have already started to move, with CoreLogic revealing that the national median property price rose 0.8 per cent to $565,474 in November 2020. It should be noted that there was a 2.1 per cent drop in national home values between April and September 2020 driven by weakness in Melbourne and Sydney. Record median values were achieved in Brisbane ($515,267), Adelaide ($459,896), Hobar t ($505,683) and Canberra ($672,866). Sydney and Melbourne are now where they were in 2017, with median values of $860,967 and $672,172, respectively. It's notable that Canberra's median now exceeds that of Melbourne.

These numbers demonstrate the fallout of COVID-19, which has benefitted the other capitals at the expense of Sydney and Melbourne. The latter is likely to suffer for some time yet, says CoreLogic's head of research Tim Lawless. "The national home value index is still seventenths of a per cent below the level recorded in March, but if housing values continue to rise at the current pace we could see a recovery from the COVID downturn as early as January or February 2021," says Lawless. "The recovery in Melbourne, where home values remain 5 per cent below their recent peak, will take longer." While it's not strictly scientific, one interesting measure recently emerged from removalist platform Muval which revealed a 52 per cent increase in the number of people getting itchy feet and looking to move since April 2020.

After a 111-day lockdown, Melbourne was the city that had the most people wanting to leave, while Brisbane, the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast ranked as the destinations most in demand. Inquiries for Queensland's premier lifestyle cities were up 96 per cent. There may be something to this measure, as reflected in CoreLogic combined regionals index for November 2020. The property researcher found that regional home values nationally were up 1.4 per cent in November compared with a 0.7 per cent rise in capital city values – or twice the rate of growth. Regional Queensland, which includes the Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast, led the move with values over the three months to the end of November 2020 increasing 3.2 per cent. That was just ahead of regional NSW at 3.1 per cent.

A GRAND SOIRÉE BY THE SEA With gratitude for all we have and hope for the future, we say Sayonara to 2020 with a Grand Soirée by the Sea, hosted by Stacy Downey on the Sunshine Coast. Inspired by gratitude from the ongoing support of clients and friends alike, local executive real estate agent Stacy Downey felt it was time to break out of our collective shell and experience what it is to live fully … on the Coast. What better way to do this than to celebrate life under the stars with delicious local seafood and wine. To accomplish this, the Sunshine Coast’s very own provedore Fish on Parkyn came onboard for our VIP Shuck and Shiraz event, to create exquisite seafood dishes from daily catches off the wharfs of Mooloolaba. Elusive mouthwatering Fraser Isle Spanner Crab croquettes oozing with warm Gorgonzola created by Master Chef Damien Styles were paired with rare selections from the cellars of Brockenchack’s most premium vintages. One of the highlights of the evening was the stunning signature cocktail, ‘The Randall’, a rich and fresh elixir of sorbet, vodka, limoncello topped with bubbling prosecco with a twist of fabulista originally showcased at Stacy’s own Venetian wedding. Chef Damien did far more than be a creator of imaginative and tasty

experiences that night, he and Stacy were on a mission to make a difference. As ambassador for The White Jacket Effect, Damien shared his passion for changing lives with real life solutions for those in his hospitality community. While Stacy reached out to support many local businesses by showcasing them through their donations to a silent auction with an impressive collection of incredible prizes gifted to help Damien’s charity dreams. It was a win-win for all with generous offerings from Lexus, Seadoo, Luxury Insurance, Fraser Isle Spanner Crab and many more. As the moon rose high over the harbour, it was time for good-byes and many promises of future gatherings … what a night to remember. This is life on the Sunshine Coast. Can you see it in your mind’s eye? It already exists, you just need to look. It is during these difficult times when we realise that life is to be lived the way you want to live it. Why not create your dreams on the Sunshine Coast guided by Stacy? An agent that truly appreciates your support and understands your specific needs, she will work with you to create a unique and comprehensive strategy to develop your ultimate property profile. 2021 MARKET UPDATE WITH STEVE HUNT | MEDIAHUNT.COM.AU

FLOWING ON

The lightbulb moment in a year of infamy.

Flow Residences

IF SOMEONE had told me in February Media Hunt would launch more than $1.5 billion in new residential projects across South East Queensland in 2020, I would have laughed. As the worst pandemic in a century crept across the globe, we all held our collective breaths as world leaders used language such as ‘the worst economic meltdown since the Great Depression’ to hammer home how dire our predicament was. Little did we realise that the March lockdowns across the country would actually be the catalyst for a transformation that – on the Gold Coast at least – would usher in arguably the biggest residential property boom the city has ever seen. It’s almost as if Covid was a ‘lightbulb’ moment. People had the time to take stock of their lives. Where do I want to be, what do I want to be doing? What are my goals, and what are my aspirations? Am I happy with the status quo, and what do I need to change? Well, change things did. In April I spoke to our client George Mastrocostas, and he was one of the first to point to an extraordinary event that was taking place – sight unseen buying. His Aniko Group had just received three signed contracts from interstate buyers wanting to relocate to Queensland.

100 covemagazine.com.au

– Issue 82

These purchasers could not get across the sealed borders to inspect what they were buying in his $140 million 1 Grant Avenue project at Hope Island. Around the same time Serenity 4212, the city’s leading waterfront land estate nearby, started to report massive selling activity from predominantly local buyers. Soon after the middle of the year, Serenity was reporting $55 million in sales. It was even forced to ‘hold’ some blocks just for interstate buyers when they could eventually arrive in Queensland. At Burleigh Heads, Brisbane based Spyre Group launched its $77 million Natura apartments on the booming Burleigh Esplanade – 25 of the 33 apartments were sold by the end of launch weekend. Cru Collective’s Chris Bolger reported three ‘sight unseen’ sales in his luxury Siarn apartments under construction at Palm Beach – all for more than $2.5 million and one to an Aussie expat stuck in Florida in the midst of Covid who bought over FaceTime. At the end of June on the southern Gold Coast, Brisbane based developer Paul Gedoun lodged a development application for a superb site overlooking the famed Snapper Rocks at Rainbow Bay.

In less than five months, his innovative $74 million Flow Residences was sold out at an average price of $3.5 million. It is the fastest selling luxury apartment project in Australia. Buoyed by the downsizer phenomenon that was upon us, KTQ Group headed by Peggy Flannery – renowned for the game-changing Elements of Byron – announced plans to launch the first stage of its $380 million Kirra Beach Hotel re-development. As we went to press, and prior to the December 27 launch of the 118 apartment Miles Residences, more than 1000 inquiries had been secured, a quarter from interstate. Such is the strength of the downsizer market that Paul Gedoun has also purchased the Dbah Café site overlooking Point Danger and plans to secure sales through some buyers who missed out on Flow. 2020 will be remembered globally as the year of the pandemic. It has been a terrible event for many countries. On the Gold Coast, it will be remembered as the year we came of age as a residential destination desired by people all over Australia and around the world.

FLAGSHIP EVENT

Queensland’s leading real estate agency to host country’s largest auction event.

THE GOLD COAST is expected to be one of the country’s leading property markets in 2021, with recent auction clearance rates of 85 per cent sending a strong signal that the best is yet to come for the city, says Gold Coast real estate stalwart Andrew Bell. The CEO of the Ray White Surfers Paradise Group – the largest group in the global Ray White network – is bracing for a bumper Event auction on January 24 as interstate buyers flock to the Gold Coast over the new year period. The Event is Australia’s annual premier auction promotion, and is seen as a key barometer for the strength of the property market as well as buyers’ attitudes coming into the new year. After a whirlwind of buyer activity on the Gold Coast in 2020, Andrew says that The Event 2021 is being shaped by conditions never before witnessed in the market. “The Event 2021 is shaping up as the most exciting in its 29-year history,” he said.

“The coronavirus pandemic has triggered a big shift in priorities for people across the country and this has set the scene for unprecedented demand for property in lifestyle markets such as the Gold Coast. “COVID-19 has clearly brought about changes to the way we work, our investment strategies, our focus on health and, of course, the lifestyles we seek for ourselves and the homes we choose to live in. “The desire for lifestyle properties has never been higher, amongst both interstate and local buyers, and we’re seeing a wave of relocation and re-sizing activity occurring simultaneously.” With a national network of offices, Ray White Surfers Paradise Group is able to help buyers through the whole property journey, from selling interstate to purchasing on the Gold Coast. During COVID-19 many property inspections and sales occurred through digital mediums, however, with the recent opening of the

Queensland border buyers can now inspect for themselves the properties that could be theirs. Andrew says that buyers are embracing the opportunity to travel to the Gold Coast over the new year period and purchase through the fair and open auction process. “With the sales activity and the level of inquiries we are currently experiencing, coupled with the benefits of low interest rates and an easing in lending criteria, we are confident that conditions in the local market are primed to support record high demand. “As the country’s largest in-house auction program, and our flagship Gold Coast promotion for the year, we’re looking forward to experiencing some of the best results in years from The Event 2021.” For more information on Ray White Surfers Paradise Group visit:

MAKING NEWS

Media Hunt Communications is taking the lead amid a global pandemic.

Sanctuary Cove Luxury Apartments

GOLD COAST-BASED strategist Media Hunt Communications is smashing goals in the media landscape and proving that through innovation and adaptability, challenges can become great opportunities for growth. Amid a year filled with uncertainty and changes to the way the world lives, Media Hunt – an Australian leader in media strategy and one of the city’s long-established media companies – has successfully launched development projects to the tune of over $1.5 billion in 2020. “Who would have thought in March this year that we would be not only launching such a large number of high-quality projects, but achieve successful outcomes that have delivered hundreds of millions of sales across southeast Queensland?” asks Media Hunt Managing Director Steve Hunt. “The early-year Covid lockdowns gave us time to stop and reflect on the business and examine new ways to cut through the marketplace. “Having been in the media for more than 30 years we have been in an enviable position of seeing the media landscape transformed arguably more in this period than any period in history.

“In the late 1980s there was no internet. As a journalist I started my career on a typewriter. And look at how technology has transformed media. “We looked at things practically. How could we assist media outlets and media crews with content – whether traditional print forums, social media platforms, or TV networks? “Many of these outlets have cut the number of journalists or crews – how could we give newsworthy content without having to burden their already frenetic work day?” Steve says many media companies fail to understand that journalists don’t have time for ‘fluff’. “One of the reasons clients come to us is that they know we have worked in the newsroom and understand what the journalists want in terms of content. “We don’t take media advice from our clients and they don’t expect us to. That would be akin to us telling them how to build a building. “They expect us to be advisors and we are forthright about that. We have their trust because of what we have delivered time and time again. “Similarly, our media contacts throughout Australia are second to none.

“People I worked in the newsroom with in the 1980s are Walkley Award winners, heads of media organisations, editors and senior journalists. “Having said that, relationships don’t have too much of a bearing on an outcome for coverage. “I often hear competitors saying they have a great relationship with this media person or that media person, but that means nothing. If the content or the story is not pin-sharp, it’s not going to get past first base. “That’s why I always advise people to use agencies that have newsroom experience. They are selling themselves short if they don’t.” This year has also seen the emergence of a formidable partnership between Steve and his former News Corp colleague Sean Lawson. Sean has a decorated 30-year career as a TV journalist and presenter for Channel 9, 7 and Fox Sports. “Sean will hate me saying this, but he is so well respected by his television media colleagues, both the ones who have been around for a while and those just emerging in their careers,” says Steve. “Sean’s sharpness for TV news has allowed us to get great cut-through for clients in the digital

media and TV landscape, not just TV news but also documentary-style news where our clients may be able to make a contribution to a story that also gives them an opportunity for local, statewide and even national coverage.” Media Hunt, which is the leading media consultancy in property in Queensland, currently represents clients with an active development portfolio totalling over $20 billion dollars. The company assists in all stages of project delivering, from the moment a development application is launched, assisting with community and council consultations, right through to project launches and following sales updates. “One of the aspects I find most fulfilling is the long-term partnerships and friendships we have developed with our clients in the development and real estate industries over the past 15 years,” says Steve. “2020 has been challenging to say the least but we have adapted our strategies with our clients to bring successful outcomes that have netted hundreds of millions of sales across the southeast Queensland lifestyle markets. “We think 2021 will be even better and we will continue to forge to be at the forefront of our industry for many years to come.”

It's all change in key relationships as you will find ways to be more outgoing and to share your time and space with others in innovative ways. A work or career decision could present a tough choice, so ensure you look very carefully at your options and avoid clinging to the past merely out of habit. A lovely collaboration could take flight as you let a chapter go.

SCORPIO 24 Oct – 22 Nov

You'll feel more inclined to be adventurous in your activities in January and February, preferring to step into new terrain at work and changing your daily routine. In the process, prepare to shed a skin and leave key elements of your past behind. You may be inclined to be bolder, but must avoid going against your own principles and values merely to socialise or network.

Aim to share duties and space at home more effectively as this will help you to enjoy your next two months more. Negotiation skills will be important while you're working towards your goals, or relationships could become tense. A sociable time mid-January will break some tense aspects of relationship dynamics, enabling you to move ahead together with more focus as a result.

You'll find ways to move ahead both in your career and personal life in January, enabling you to make fresh arrangements at home to suit everyone. Your sign's ruler Mars in earthy Taurus will provide a strong platform for you while your work and personal life enter a very busy mode. A favourite project will help earth you and provide a sense of foundation and purpose.

A fresh approach to someone you have feelings for will take the relationship into new territory. Someone may behave uncharacteristically or will be unpredictable, and this will merit a solid, grounded approach so that you avoid taking unnecessarily complex steps. There is a therapeutic aspect in February's stars, offering the opportunity to improve your health and work.

Proactive and dynamic Mars will provide a boost in energy levels, enabling you to get things done. But if you feel frustrated by delays or difficulties at first, be patient as February will bring the chance to surge ahead more freely. Don't give up at the first hurdle. The new moon on January 13 will introduce fresh dynamics in a project, enabling you to surge ahead.

Be prepared for something new in 2021, as either your home life or career will step into new territory. You may be drawn to renovate; to do some DIY; or even to move. A trip could be just what you want to refresh your lust for life now. Find ways to work with those who need your help such as family or friends, because in helping them you will ultimately help yourself.

Gain perspective about your priorities early on in 2021, as the first two months are ideal for steaming ahead with your plans. You may find in the process that you discover new and viable ways to move forward without feeling you're constantly going over the same old ground. Just avoid putting the cart before the horse. Plan ahead and avoid clinging to the past.

The new moon in your sign on January 13 will kick-start a phase that could boost your finances, self-esteem and creative projects. In January, aim to work towards a better understanding with someone, or you risk venturing into a stalemate. Mid-February, you'll gain the chance to improve a personal matter. You may win a fight, but must ensure you do nothing to extend a battle.

Your ideas to renew and reinvigorate your personal and domestic life will gain traction, although this will depend on how well you co-operate and collaborate with others. Avoid stubborn people if you need someone to rely on: find people who are adaptable and willing to bend with your plans if making alterations at home. Trust your communication abilities and aim to compromise.
