Editor’s letter AS I WRITE THIS, I’m looking out my office window at crystal clear blue skies, there’s a gentle breeze rocking the boats in the marina and The Village is bustling with preparations for the 2015 Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show. This year marks the 27th staging of this prestigious event so inside this edition we have a comprehensive 6-page guide to the Show including a full entertainment calendar and special on-water preview. The Cove magazine team also took to the seas for a special photoshoot in the lead up to the Boat Show. Our cover and internal ‘Shore Leave’ fashion spread, featuring Master Illusionist Matt Hollywood and media personality Brooke Lowther, were shot aboard Catalyst, a stunning yacht moored here at Sanctuary Cove. Still on the ‘boating’ theme, our publisher Clare E. Urwin and her husband Bryan recently spent a very enjoyable 16 days aboard Seabourn Odyssey, cruising from Auckland, down the South Island of New Zealand, then back across the Tasman to Australia.
You can read all about her journey in our Well Travelled section, where you will also find stories on Hawaii and the Maldives. Professional NRL player, and proud Queenslander, Daly Cherry-Evans also joins us to share some holiday snaps and travel tips. Another high-profile rugby league identity, as a team owner rather than a player, is Russell Crowe. Russell is the subject of our Feature interview in this edition and shares some rare insights into his career, his latest movie The Water Diviner (have you noticed a running trend yet?) and fatherhood. If all that isn’t enough, we also test-drive the latest Rolls-Royce, sample some delicious craft beer and show you what the top models are wearing when they are off duty. And, of course, you still have time to enter our latest competition, where one lucky reader will win a magical Maldives holiday to Club Med Kani Resort, courtesy of Cove Travel and Club Med.

“ … being a father is a privilege, it’s not work or a job. It’s what I look forward to …” – Russell Crowe 22
FEATURE
Actor/Director/Dad He may be an Academy Award-winning actor and acclaimed director, but Russell Crowe readily admits that fatherhood is his most important role to date.
WORDS LEX MARTIN / THE INTERVIEW PEOPLE
When did you start spying on directors? From the time I was about six-years-old. It’s always been an interest of mine. I have always been connected to the technical aspect of film. And that’s why I get on with people like Ridley Scott or Ron Howard. That awareness of the camera makes his day more efficient. If he’s got five cameras set up on a scene and I can play that scene and feed each one of those cameras, then in one take, he’s got a massive amount of footage to cut with, and he’s a happy boy. I know the nature of film. It’s a language that I speak. I used to only work with directors who were significantly older than me and then some little inaudible click happened and I suddenly found myself on film set after film set where I was working with directors who were younger than me.
Was Joshua’s dedication to his family, his love for his kids, one of the reasons why this story spoke to you? Definitely. There is a natural connection that you have to the character. Once you become a parent, every single thing you do in your life is through the prism of being a parent. So you read a story like this, about a man and three sons that all died in battle, and there is going to be an empathetic connection. What I connected to with Joshua, was that he was this sort of iconic old style Australian man where you might assume he is closed down, but in fact his heart is very open. He is open to other people. He is able to move from a massive distance in the middle of nowhere to go to a city like Istanbul and meet someone like the owner of the hotel, and recognise within her a grief that they share. I like the gentle way that Joshua goes through life, even though he has been impacted so desperately by the death of his wife and kids.
is picking them up from school, taking them to sports on the weekend, taking them to Nando’s on a Wednesday night and getting into the rhythm of the life that we like to lead together. It’s got nothing to do with being a movie star or being famous. I am just a dad. I’ve been working pretty hard. This cycle started halfway through 2011 and is bound to finish the first week of May. Obviously I have had time with them in between, but I haven’t had that big chunk of time at home where I can really get into life in Australia. I had a lot of time with preproduction and postproduction. As you may know, in postproduction you are working 18, 20 hours a day, scrambling like crazy to get every single idea that you thought of into your movie but at least I was home and I was in the rhythm of their lives.

Your movie, The Water Diviner, is getting great reviews. Where were you at the Oscars? The last Oscars I was watching my football team play. We won, so I made a good decision. How did it come about that you wanted to make this particular film? I can’t tell you I was pursuing this story in a definite way. It came and found me, and that’s what makes it even cooler. You are developing stuff, you are getting on with your life, and then this thing hit me in the busiest professional period I had ever had. Between half of 2011 and the end of 2012, I made five feature films – Man of Steel, Broken City, Les Miserables, Noah and Winter’s Tale. In the middle of that, with all the complications in my private life going on and the football team and cattle farms, this script arrived. Everything that I was thinking I was going to be doing just changed because I wanted to do this.
Do you find it difficult to be a good father? No. Before you get to the stuff that I do creatively, it’s the single most important thing in my life … to be a good dad. Sometimes I despair a little bit because I travel so much, but I stay connected with them. And I know two minutes after seeing them, the way they respond to the tone of my voice, that nothing changes. They know who their dad is and how much I love them. But being a father is a privilege, it’s not work or a job. It’s what I look forward to, it’s what I work for … to get home and have time with them. In fact, this year, if things go the way I want them to go, from the first week of May when I finish all this press stuff, I’m going to have six months at home. And all I’m going to be doing
Did the postwar theme of the film also attract you to the story? Within the script there is the opportunity to put a story that Australians and New Zealanders think they know very well in front of them in a different way. It’s 100 years since the battle of Gallipoli, and it’s very important culturally to Australians and New Zealanders. It’s the battle that forged the nations. It’s the first time that Australians and New Zealanders fought under their own flag, before that they were just an extension of the British Empire. But what I realised when I was reading the script, and many people realise now that the film has been so successful in Australia, is: We never take in the other perspective. Never for one minute in our grief, in our recognition of our own sacrifice, do we ever think of what the other side was going through. >>

“To be in a position where the composition, the colour and the textures and the movements of the camera are within my decision, it’s the most comfortable place for me to be.” – Russell Crowe
We think of this grand display of courage and bravery to join up in the expeditionary force and go to the other side of the world to defend Britain and France. But we invaded a sovereign nation that would never have had an angry word with us. To put that in front of Australians and New Zealanders is a risky thing but at the same time it’s 100 years old and I think societally, culturally, people are able to open their hearts a little bit more and see that conflict from a totally different perspective.
Did you conceive all the images ahead of time? You have to be open for the magic. That’s the deal you make with gods of film. You do what you are planning, and then something magical happens and you capture it. But some of the images are pin-point accurate. I imagined a particular type of sunset in Istanbul for this one shot over Joshua’s shoulders, looking at the Blue Mosque from the middle of the Bosphorus. On that day we were still finishing up the arrival sequence. It was grey and I knew the one opportunity I had to get that Bosphorus shot was that day. We had a ferry booked and 25 of us were going out with a limited crew to get it. I was just staring at the sky all day: ‘Come on! I don’t want this. This is flat and dead’. It was that way all day and a minute after we started to board the boat … we were scrambling to get gear on because it was quite late … just above the Blue Mosque these holes start to open up. When we hit the middle of the Bosphorus, we were setting up as we were going and we were now in position, that gigantic orb of the sun floated into that hole. We were just like … bang! It was so stunning, so absolutely correct to the drawings I had made. We actually stopped and went home and said: ‘We witnessed it’. We shook hands because we were here for that sunset. That’s the nature of film.
NOT AVAILABLE ONLINE How did you manage to do double duty as director and lead actor? Actually I didn’t find it that difficult. I found the transition very easy. I know I am supposed to give you 100 horror stories, but it just wasn’t reality. The weight of experience and the type of the actor I am means I am always very concerned with what the camera is seeing, what the lens size is, how the lens is moving, and what the director wants from that particular shot. So the transition to fully constructing a shot is not that big a step. Every now and then I’d get to the set and realise: I don’t have to put on make-up and silly costume. So those days were even more fun because it takes a certain layer of responsibility off your shoulders. To be in a position where the composition, the color and the textures and the movements of the camera are within my decision, it’s the most comfortable place for me to be.

But some of the scenes are also quite brutal... When you are making a story like this, part of your responsibility is to show the difference between the glorification of the moment and the actual reality. You don’t just go over the trenches, get shot and are conveniently dead. You lie there in the mud, holding onto your guts, bleeding for six or seven hours. The amount of people that came to me after seeing the film who said: ‘I never thought about that. It’s always been clean in my mind’. That’s not what happened. You got men with severed limbs and bleeding through holes in various parts of their body. That’s part of the responsibility of telling a story like this. You turned 51 on April 7... Thanks for reminding me. What would be your advice to your younger self? Do everything you are doing, son. Just keep doing it. Love what you are doing and love unashamedly. You’ll be fine. Do you live more consciously now? Have you become wiser? I don’t know I was ever not those things before. Everybody has a couple of bad marks in their life but somebody like me has to live with it forever. Somebody was talking to me about something that happened 10 years ago: ‘You haven’t gone crazy lately’. It was a five-minute mistake a decade ago but people talk to me like it’s a present thing, like I still wrestle with it on a daily basis. It’s ridiculous. You know what has changed in me: I have come to a point where I realised I have gathered X amount of knowledge and there are a lot of people that don’t have that knowledge. It’s really an easy, comfortable place to be the person that can answer that question, so I tend to have a lot of mentoring relationships with young performers, even in the worlds of sport, and that’s a comfortable, privileged place to be in. I don’t know if I have mellowed or not. I am just as passionate about everything that I do. That’s possibly what’s got me into trouble in the past. That has not changed. I have a deep and abiding love for my job. People may say that I take myself too seriously, but that’s just bullshit. I just enjoy what I do. I enjoy talking about it, I enjoy planning for it, I enjoy the actual doing of it. I used to think I had the best job in the world, and then I did this and now I realise I am in this odd place. There is a lot on the line with this film. If it doesn’t work commercially, then it’s not easy for me to do it again. But if I am not able to do it again, then I am caught in this limbo between what I have to do to feed my family and what I really want to be doing. I have gambled three years of my life to, in a strange way, buy my freedom.

Cruising royalty The Cunard Line has a royal connection dating back to the 1800s.
WORDS SUSAN LANG-LEMCKERT
THE FOUNDER of the Cunard Line was Samuel Cunard, a Canadian whose business acumen saw him managing a general store at the tender age of 17 and quickly rising to the rank of Captain after volunteering to join the Anglo-American War in 1812. Focusing on shipping after the war, Samuel pioneered steam ship services aboard the
26
Royal William, then went on to operate a steampowered ferry service on Canada’s east coast. Given this professional experience and his innate entrepreneurial skills, it was no surprise that Samuel secured the tender to provide a steam-powered Royal Mail service that spanned the North Atlantic to service Britain, the United States and Canada. This saw the birth of the British and North American Royal Mail Steam Packet Company, which became known as ‘Cunard’s Line’. From the maiden voyage of Britannia, the line’s first ship, in 1840, success was assured. On arrival in the US, the city of Boston welcomed the ship with a gift of The Boston Cup, which to this day is always carried by the Cunard Line’s current flagship. His gift for business meant Samuel soon spotted the potential to take passengers on the mail service … and so came the beginnings of the cruise ship industry we know so well today. A strong believer in the importance of safety over speed, Samuel insisted his captains operate their ships with the utmost care at all times. This core principle was borne out – and rewarded – by the unparalleled safety record the Cunard Line has enjoyed throughout the entirety of its history.
Samuel’s significant contribution to the British shipping industry was officially recognised in 1859 by Queen Victoria, who made him a Baronet. And providing perfect synergy to that is the fact that the Queen Victoria remains one of Cunard’s most famous liners … The Cunard Queens Queen Mary 2 RMS Queen Mary 2, the Cunard Line’s current flagship, is the only transatlantic ocean liner in line service between Southampton and New York. It was the first major ocean liner built since the line’s previous flagship, Queen Elizabeth 2. Designed by British naval architects and built in France, Queen Mary 2 was, at the time of her construction in 2003, the longest passenger ship ever built. Renowned for top quality in every possible aspect of design and finish, the final cost of construction was said to be in the vicinity of $300,000 per berth. With a cruising speed of 26 knots and a top speed of just over 30 knots, Queen Mary 2 travels much faster than her contemporary cruise ships, thanks to integrated electric propulsion that uses gas turbines to enhance the power from the ship’s diesel engines.

The onboard facilities include a casino, a ballroom, a theatre, 15 bars and restaurants and five swimming pools and even a nursery and kennels. This luxurious craft is also the only one to boast a planetarium … yet another Cunard first. Famous Queen Mary 2 passengers have included John Cleese, Richard Dreyfuss, George Lucas, Rod Stewart and Donald Trump. Queen Elizabeth Being somewhat smaller than Queen Mary 2, the MS Queen Elizabeth is the second-largest ship built for Cunard. Although larger than her other sister ship, Queen Victoria, she is of almost identical design. Constructed in Italy between 2007 and 2010, Queen Elizabeth had already travelled 123,351 nautical miles visiting 108 different destinations by the time of her first birthday, which was celebrated in Malta. Designed to reflect the style and opulence of Cunard’s first two Elizabeths – the original Queen Elizabeth and the now-retired Queen Elizabeth 2 – the décor of the current ship features art deco touches that evoke the splendour of the 1930s, when the first Queen Elizabeth embarked upon her maiden voyage. >>

A feature of Queen Elizabeth cruises is the Insights programme, where guests are treated to addresses from high-profile speakers such as the world-famous novelist Lord Jeffery Archer. There is no end of sporting activities, either – in addition to the traditional seafaring deck games of shuffleboard and quoits there is also paddle tennis, lawn bowls and even croquet. Or if sport’s not your thing, there’s dancing, live music and a library that offers more than 6,000 titles to choose from. Something for absolutely everyone! Queen Victoria The smallest ship operated by the Cunard Line, MS Queen Victoria boasts an unusual honour – the bottle of Prosecco broken against her side to celebrate the floating of her hull was swung by one Ms Maureen Ryan, a longtime Cunard staffer who had worked on all four of the line’s Queens. Her official naming on 7 December 2007 also drew comment when the bottle of champagne did not smash on impact with her hull – said by seafarers to be an ominous sign – though in this case it proved not to be true. In 2010 the ship again became a trailblazer when Queen Victoria took Cunard’s first female captain, Inger Klein Olsen, on board for the first time. Queen Victoria’s resplendent ambience provides the perfect setting for sophisticated pursuits such as watercolour classes, wine appreciation, literary discussions, theatre (with the luxury of private boxes – the only such facility at sea) and a Winter Garden lounge that features a retractable glass roof.
Like the monarch whose name she bears, Queen Victoria is smaller but powerful … and a leader, not a follower. Queen Elizabeth 2 – the most famous Queen of all Though designed for transatlantic service between Southampton and New York, the muchloved Queen Elizabeth 2 served in the twin roles of transatlantic liner and cruise ship for nearly 40 years – 35 of those as the line’s flagship. Until her conversion to diesel power in the mid1980s, Queen Elizabeth 2 was the last oil-fired passenger steamship to cross the Atlantic in regular service, but she was always best known as a luxury cruise ship. Launched on 20 September 1967 by Queen Elizabeth II with the same pair of scissors the Queen Mother had used to launch Queen Elizabeth and Queen Mary years earlier, she has enjoyed a distinguished – and exciting – history. Her first non-crew passenger was Prince Charles, who took the journey from the Clydebank shipyard to drydock in Greenock; she was the target of a 1972 bomb threat (which transpired to be a hoax) and served in the Falklands War by transporting troops and volunteers to the South Atlantic. And by the time of her well-earned retirement in 2008, Queen Elizabeth 2 had carried 2½ million passengers on 806 transatlantic crossings, covering an astounding six million nautical miles along the way.

Model off duty Henrietta Dups reveals the comfortable yet chic fashion trend that has its origins not on the catwalk, but off it.
Banjo & Matilda
A FASHION TREND that has really been gaining some traction recently is the ‘Model Off Duty’ (MOD) look. This is by no means a new concept, as fashionistas have been gaining sartorial inspiration from MODs for quite some time. Supermodel Kate Moss was the catalyst for models influencing fashion trends. She first became a style icon back in the 90s when she dated Johnny Depp and had us all wearing grunge. Fast forward 20-something years and Moss, the poster girl for ‘Rock Chic’, is still a major force when it comes to the style stakes. However, she is no longer alone when it comes to influencing fashion more off the runway, than on it. Paparazzi have snapped the likes of Alexa Chung, Lara Stone, Cara Delevingne and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, zipping between catwalk shows, photoshoots and castings – all wearing a
38
Frame Denim
uniform that walks a fine line between comfort and cool. As American supermodel Karlie Kloss told Lucky magazine last year: “It’s a balance between casual comfort and supermodel chic.” The MOD look has no doubt come about because, when not being stitched into skin tight clothes, wearing painful heels two sizes too small, having a face full of makeup and their hair endlessly teased, these runway regulars just want to be comfortable. However, looking stylish is also paramount, as they are in the image industry after all. You don’t need to be 5’11” and genetically blessed with razor sharp cheek bones and beestung lips to pull off the MOD look. The secret to these catwalk creatures’ style is that they keep it simple and luxurious with easy basics that fit well, mix and match and can be dressed up or down.
Denim is their go-to favourite, teamed with a basic tee, cashmere sweater or leather jacket, an oversized bag and a few clever accessories. This look effortlessly takes them from a morning flight to a photo shoot, then on to a dinner party or drinks, with the quick switch of sneakers to ballet flats to heeled ankle boots. When it comes to jewellery, you will notice that models sport classic, genuine diamond and platinum pieces that co-ordinate with any outfit when ‘off duty’. With the mantra ‘less is more,’ their ornaments of choice are a timeless wristwatch teamed with a sleek suite of diamonds: stud earrings, tennis bracelet and ring. Samantha Ogilvie, owner of her eponymous Brisbane boutique, and Rochelle Miller, owner of Another Love in Southport, both have a keen eye for curating fabulous collections of beautiful designer pieces each season. >>

Their styles are always bang on trend, comfortable and totally wearable. So what do these two sartorial experts believe will be the key trends for the ‘off duty’ look this autumn and winter? “We’re happily moving away from the minimalist normcore look and having fun with bright neon colours, as well as throwing back to the 1970s with suede pieces, fringing details and earthy hues,” Samantha explains. “We’re also tapping into new denim styles with high waisted crop jeans and flares from our favourite denim label – Frame Denim. For an offduty look, we’re pairing the jeans with buttery soft cashmere sweaters and cardigans in camel, ivory and light grey tones.” Rochelle agrees. “It’s all about the 70s right now,” she says. “Colours are very muted, perfect for our winter. Think fringing, wide legs, lots of brown tones. Flares are back in a major way. Wear them out at night with a sexy blouse, a biker jacket and heels.” For Rochelle, the MOD look is also all about the boyfriend jean and the distressed jean. Although these denim styles have been around for a few seasons now, they are still en pointe. “Boots are also still very popular and on the rise, I’m loving knee high suede boots with skinny jeans and a luxurious oversized sweater.” The MOD look is all about layering, which is why it is the perfect style when dressing for Queensland winter weekends – be it staying at a B&B, picnics in the countryside, hiking in the mountains or leisurely walks on the beach. International supermodel and former Brisbane resident, Miranda Kerr, is the doyenne of MOD style. Influencing women across the globe and never setting a fashion foot wrong, Miranda always manages to look effortlessly elegant. Her style is a combination of laidback Australian street chic, Sunshine Coast surfer and a twist of European flair. So this winter, channel your inner Aussie supermodel and embrace the ‘Model Off Duty’ look.

Signature scent Patsy Rowe spent an enjoyable day creating her own French perfume. CRUISING AROUND THE MEDITERRANEAN recently, one of the excursions offered was a perfume creation workshop with Galimard at the Studio des Fragrances at the Place du General de Gaulle in the village of Gaillard-Eze. I booked immediately (ignoring the low grumblings emanating from Bill.) On the day of the excursion, we drove from Nice to Villefranche-Sur-Mer. Arriving early we stumbled into a quaint café (I’m not a morning person) where we enjoyed a double espresso and chocolate croissant. Then, our class of three students, plus Bill and our tour guide Louis, piled back into the van and drove to Galimard, passing banana, date, carob, orange and lemon trees as proof of the year-round warm climate. The art of perfumery was first introduced in Europe in 1221, with the discovery of some monks’ recipes (they wore perfume?). By the 16th century, perfumes were taken to France by Catherine de’ Medici’s personal perfumer, whose laboratory was connected to her apartment by a secret passageway so that no formulae could be stolen en route. That’s the official version (but it strikes me as a lot of trouble to go to for a perfume formula.) At Galimard, we were greeted by the charming Jeanette, who offered another espresso as she introduced us to the perfumer. Known as the ‘nez’ or ‘nose,’ the perfumer’s acute sense of smell and skill can create an original perfume for the customer – today that’s us. Due to the demanding nature of their profession, a ‘nose’ doesn’t smoke, drink alcohol or eat spicy foods which may affect their sense of smell. Our ‘nose’ seemed very young to be so experienced but with her limited English and my long-forgotten French I outlined my ‘brief’ beginning with my favourite fragrances: Joy and Chanel No. 5. She then took each of us to sit in our own ‘perfume organ’, a semi-circular pod with three rows of small, bright-coloured phials of essences. Explaining that a ‘nose’ can become extremely skilful at identifying components of scents in the same manner as a wine expert, she guided me to one of the labelled essences on the bottom of the three tiers and told me to put three drops of my choice in an empty glass beaker. This would provide the ‘top note,’ the scent we smell when we first apply our perfume.
42
She then suggested I add tonka bean (I hoped it smelled better than it sounded), tuberose and geranium, all of which I smeared on the tiny paper blotter before deciding which I liked best. She smelt and suggested I add jasmine and mimosa from the bottles on the middle tier. I also chose rose and plumeria, dropping five drops into my phial, giving my perfume its middle notes. I was surprised that all the terms used were so musical. Then came the top tier. I selected cinnamon and sassafras for my base … my beaker was filling up. I watched as she held the blotter under her nose, closed her eyes, considered, told me to add more of this bottle or that bottle, smelt again, and readjusted constantly, finally adding some seaweed which she said was often referred to as ‘bladder wrack’ – which I felt was rather an unfortunate name. Then she put a little bergamot on the paper blotter, explaining that spicy or fatty food or even
medication change a fragrance. To my surprise, she rubbed my cheek and told me that since my skin was so awfully dry we’d have to take that into consideration as dry skin can also alter the smell. For the next hour we smelt, added, smelt. Finally the ‘nose’ sighed, smiled and handed me my beaker to dab some on my blotter. It was perfect – a wonderful, heavy fragrance that I immediately loved. We were shown to another room, drank yet another espresso, and 15 minutes later I was given a bottle of my personal fragrance. Since the composition of my personal fragrance is kept on file, I can conveniently re-order by email. After a Campari soda at the bar next door (I needed something after all that smelling and sniffing) I returned to the ship – every pulse point slathered in Galimard Eau de Parfum! In addition to being a really fun experience, that fragrance lasts longer on me that any other I have ever bought … much longer.

Covenant at the Cove Inspired by a lifetime of travel, The Covenant offers a new lifestyle experience in Sanctuary Cove.
GRACING THE PROMENADE at Sanctuary Cove, The Covenant opened its doors in May, just three weeks before the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show. Delivering a fusion of Modern Australian dining, cocktails and tapas, this stylish new venue offers a variety of experiences; casual bistro, indoor fine dining, outdoor cabana lounges, and a private dining room. With a sleek, inviting design and an innovative, expansive food and drinks menu, The Covenant promises guests a quality experience in a relaxed and warm environment. Prior to undertaking The Covenant, owners Mathew and Liz Henry spent years travelling the world; Mathew as a pilot, and Liz as a flight attendant. Their travels have seen them visit many exotic destinations, including resorts, restaurants and bars across the globe. These experiences have helped to shape The Covenant into a world-class offering. “We have been very fortunate to have travelled to so many wonderful locations and to have been to some amazing restaurants and bars,” Mathew says. “And we have experienced some of the most wonderful food and service. This has been our inspiration for The Covenant. We wanted to offer people a truly international experience.” “The Covenant gives guests a variety of experiences, from very casual to high end fine dining,” Liz says. “But at the heart of The Covenant is our genuine desire for people to have a good time. It’s about letting people relax and soak up the wonderful energy of this place.
“The venue is fantastic, the food and drinks are amazing, but for us it’s all about service, service, service. We want people to be welcome and relaxed and happy and we will be providing world-class service to make that possible. “Whether they are coming to us for a fine-dining experience, a special occasion dinner, a casual lunch, or cocktails and tapas, we will make sure their experience is unforgettable.” Choosing The Marine Village as their location was an easy decision for the couple, who are residents of Sanctuary Cove. “We love Sanctuary Cove,” Liz says. “When I was a child, my father used to come to Sanctuary Cove to play golf and we would go to the tavern that was here for lunch. I have such clear, fond memories of my time here, it was wonderful, and I’m looking forward to helping create those memories for other people.” Mathew and Liz and the whole team worked furiously to bring their ambitious dream to life, and say they have been overwhelmed by the support of the Sanctuary Cove community. “This is an amazing place to set up a business,” Liz says. “Not just because it is a world-class destination, but the people here are so supportive and warm. We have been blown away by the support we have received. Everyone is just really excited about The Covenant opening and we can’t wait to share it with our guests.” For more information and updates on The Covenant follow ‘Covenant at the Cove’ on facebook.com/covenantatthecove

Cleverly crafted All beer is not created equal … as Tony Harper discovers. WHAT ON EARTH HAS HAPPENED TO BEER? Only a heartbeat ago Crown Lager was top shelf, Corona was kind of funky and the likes of Cascade and Boags were local (well almost) exotics. Today they are all, figuratively, drawn from the same bucket: mainstream beers with as much between them as siblings in matching pajamas. You can blame it all on those odd fellows that hide under the banner of craft beer. They have shaken things up with their antics and their pajamas that come in all guises; some in cotton, others in flannelette, a few walk naked. A couple even wear the stripes of the old brigade, but those stripes are brighter and a little off kilter. They are beers with character and they are taking over the world. You don’t need a beard to like them, but apparently it helps. As do tattoos. It’s not a new phenomenon. The microbrewery thing (at least in a modern context) goes back 30 years or more to the pubs of Great Britain. It was the Britiish who founded the current craft beer movement and it was the Americans that turned it into something special simply by doing their usual thing (surely it’s built in to their genetic codes) of bigger must be better. So along came supercharged India Pale Ales, American Pale Ales and Imperial Pale Ales, then Barley Wines, sours and specialty beers.

The New Zealand and Scandinavian beer makers aren’t far behind. Australia is something of a newcomer but it is certainly making up for lost time. We have some incredible breweries like Holgate, La Sirene, Bridge Road, Modus Operandi and their peers. And if Queensland feels a little ‘also-ran’ in the wine and coffee department, it is staking its claim quite forcefully when it comes to craft beer. Burleigh Brewing isn’t far short of celebrating a decade of manufacturing and in terms of production and distribution it’s the leading Queensland craft brewery. Its range of beers is broad, running from wheat beer (Hef), zero-carb (Bighead) and a terrific mid-strength (Duke Helles) to its rather iconic pale ales. Not far across the New South Wales border in Byron Bay is the brewery that may have done more than any other in the country toward converting mainstream beer drinkers to craft: Stone and Wood. Its Pacific Ale is as bright and fresh as a spring morning, smelling more like a fruit salad than any beer you’ve ever tasted. Unlike a lot of craft beers, it’s not confronting, but it is startling and … delicious. And not so loaded with alcohol and hops that you need to stop after one. The Gold Coast is home to one of the newest craft breweries in the state; Fortitude Brewing Co and its alias, Noisy Minor.
Noisy Minor is the brand for the small-batch stuff and the craftier beers, the funky stuff – IPA, Saisons, the almighty Admiral Ackbar AntiImperial Red Ale, Grim Ripa Rye IPA. This is the ultimate craft-beer brand; no pajamas … nude. And the Fortitude stuff – while a little more mainstream – isn’t far behind. The standout beer is Pacer – a 2.8% alcohol light that has all the hallmarks of a good American pale ale; slippery, hoppy and backed by a good amount of malts. It’s hard to believe it’s a light beer because it packs more flavour and texture than most midstrengths and some full bore beers. But it’s only one in a quite glorious stable. The Fortitude and Noisy Minor Brewery site is at Eagle Heights on Mount Tamborine and it has a brew-pub attached: simple food (but well made) and a terrific range of beers. It’s worth the trip with a designated driver. Brisbane folk needn’t travel so far (but it’s travel well worth taking) for serious craft beer. Within spitting distance of each other are Green Beacon and Newstead Breweries in the Newstead/Teneriffe semi-industrial precincts. Both have bars and kitchens attached – Newstead being a little more exotic than the pared back stuff from Green Beacon. And both have great beers spanning a heap of styles but based on the American blueprint.
Cove magazine proudly presents
The McWilliam’s Family Wines Degustation Dinner Thursday 2 July Hosted by Craig Stephenson & Brian Collins from the iconic McWilliam’s Mount Pleasant Winery. Please join us for a delicious five-course degustation dinner thoughtfully matched with Champagne Taittinger and a selection of McWilliam’s finest Wines from around Australia.
Newstead’s 3 Quarter Time Session Ale is the best mid strength on the market (arguably of course). Again it’s a hop-forward American styled beer with brash flavours and plenty of backing; mid-strength beer with a punch. Two to the Valley India Pale Ale is epic in a malt-driven, heady IPA kind of way … it’s the stuff I like to drink; flannelette with polka dots. A few hundred metres from the Newstead doors you’ll find Green Beacon; the first in the area and a pared-down version of the others in terms of food offerings and general hospitality. It’s a brewery with seats. The beers are terrific. They range from the rather refreshing Cross Knot Kolsch to a pile of more hoppy and heady brews topped – at least in the standard range – by the Windjammer IPA. Red’s Dead, Uppercut and The Botanist are part of its limited release beers. These are only a few of the higher-profile breweries; there are others, plus a vast number of amateur brewers making some startling stuff. Craft beer isn’t a fad or a passing craze. It’s a progression that’s here to stay, brightening the lists of our restaurants, adding colour and choice to our retail shelves and finally giving us an array of styles and flavours virtually at our fingertips. Look out bland beer … your days are numbered.

Spirit of Ecstasy The new Rolls-Royce Ghost II is the ultimate super-luxury car. WORDS CHRIS NIXON
64
IF YOU HAVE TO ASK THE PRICE, you can’t afford it. So goes the old saying. But I’ll let you into a secret straight away: The Rolls-Royce Ghost II reviewed here costs $ 545,000 list, plus options and drive-away charges. It would be fatuous to suggest this was good value, but I ended my short tenure with the Ghost thinking I wouldn’t hesitate if I had the money. Rolls-Royce is enjoying a global sales surge and this is driven not by outdated expressions of British luxury and prestige, but by a new order of sharp design and high technology from its owners, BMW.
of power and 780 Newtonmetres of torque. And even though this massive automobile weighs 2470 kg, it can accelerate from rest to 100 kmh in a sportscar-like 4.9 seconds and continue to a governed 250 kmh top speed. At any velocity, let alone streaking along an autobahn at 250 kmh, the Ghost feels like an unstoppable force, yet it is more wieldy than expected. It is no sports car, but it corners tidily and is not difficult to handle around town. The only limitations to ‘normal’ use are its size – best to occupy two spots at the shopping centre with no cars nearby – and the inescapable fear of damaging something that costs $600,000
The Ghost II comes with slightly revised front styling and improved front and rear seats. Rolls-Royce says cryptically the ‘waft’ line on the bodywork leans further forward on the new model to strengthen the impression of dynamism and the wake channel on the bonnet – a striking, unique feature in matt-polished stainless steel – has also been adjusted. Waft and wake, two words that aptly describe the graceful but powerful progress of a 5.4 metre long Rolls-Royce. I could have charged admirers just to sit in this car and absorb its magnificent luxury. Cream leather in the test car, with blue lambswool carpets
Rolls-Royce remains unique, however. A small number of other prestige saloons could be configured with standard and optional features to match the specifications of a Ghost II, Wraith or Phantom on paper, yet still none would match its extraordinary presence, symbolised by the Flying Lady atop the radiator grille. There is only one Rolls-Royce. This one, Ghost II, went on sale last year and is now represented in Queensland by the Gold Coast’s Sunshine Group – Rolls-Royce MotorsCars Queensland. It boasts a 6.6 litre V12 engine with turbochargers to boost output to 420kiloWatts
on the road and belongs to someone else. Everyone wants to know what it’s like. The answer is, sublime. I don’t recall hearing the engine start or run or feeling any vibration during my test, but it was certainly there, powering this beast with a seamless surge. Likewise, the eight-speed automatic transmission. This changes gears imperceptibly, and also generally smooths progress with some extraordinary technology – the car’s GPS navigation system constantly monitors the road and terrain and adjusts the gears to suit the bends and undulations ahead.
to match the paintwork. Yes, there were traditional organ-stop ventilation controls on the dash panel along with modern stuff like a satnav screen and an audio system that could blow the doors off at full volume. Picnic trays for the two rear passengers? Of course. And a centre armrest with its own audio, air-con and phone controls like the flight deck of Starship Enterprise. The seats adjust electrically in several directions to provide absolute comfort. The rear doors are hinged at the back and open from the front. Once seated, the rear passenger pushes a button and the door closes itself gently and noiselessly.
Tantalise your
Senses
That may be just as well, because the doors are massive units and would require some effort to swing. The quality and finish are impeccable, totally what you’d expect in the world’s most revered luxury car. Still, it’s apparently not enough for most people, who employ Rolls-Royce’s bespoke service to have their car fitted out and finished exactly as they require. Most likely their specifications would include some of the items that are surprisingly optional. Comfort and convenience may be matters of taste, but it’s difficult to understand
Voted Top 10 Best Steakhouse in Queensland
why common items such as lane-departure warning, active cruise control, engine idle-stop, auto headlight dipping and head-up instrument display – which come standard in cars costing less than $40,000 – are optional. But not at any price can other cars offer a Spirit of Ecstasy that lowers into the radiator shell when the engine is switched off, or a pair of chrome-handled umbrellas stowed at hand in the front doors. They’re exclusive to Rolls-Royce … and exclusivity, rather than a mere list of features, is what a Rolls-Royce is all about.

LEXUS LAUNCHED IN AUSTRALIA as Toyota’s new luxury brand almost 25 years ago and since then has produced only one sports coupe worth the name, the limited-edition LFA supercar with a reputed seven-figure price. So if you’re a fan of Lexus quality, value and after-sales service but not their range of sedans and SUVs, the all-new RC coupe should fit the bill. It’s available as the RC350, with the familiar Lexus 3.5 litre V6 engine, or the RC F with a 5.0 litre V8. The RC350 comes in three versions, Luxury ($66,000 plus on-roads), F Sport ($74,000) and Sports Luxury ($86,000). The RC F is priced at $133,500 for the ‘base’ version and $147,500 for a Carbon variant with lightweight body panels. Lexus (and Toyota) persists with normallyaspirated engines of relatively large capacity
The RC maintains distinctive Lexus styling, including its spectacular front grille. It could never be called European, but it’s the handsomest Lexus yet, with proportions and stance that unmistakably signal its sporting intent. It demands attention. As a separate model designed from scratch, not as a two-door adaptation of an existing sedan, Lexus says the RC coupe is aimed at younger buyers. Lexus Australia chief executive Sean Hanley puts it delicately when he explains the RC is a necessary step in lifting the make's ability to stir emotions. That’s another way of saying Lexus models until now have been worthy but unexciting. "Our LFA supercar from 2010 previously embodied Lexus' passion and acted as an emotional drawcard, and it was one of the most important models we've ever produced. However,
navigation, reversing camera and 10-speaker audio with digital radio. F Sport adds Variable Gear Ratio Steering and Dynamic Rear Steering, as well as unique interior and exterior treatments. Sports Luxury adds Adaptive Variable Suspension, its own 19-inch alloy design, 17speaker Mark Levinson audio, power front seats with driver memory and semi-aniline leather accented trim. RC 350's Lexus firsts include a significantly upgraded Blind Spot Monitor system, which can detect vehicles within a range up to 60 metres. Optional enhancement packages include a variety of other electronic safety aids. While the RC350 will satisfy most needs, if there’s a sporty V8 option someone is sure to buy it. The RC F V8 engine produces 351kW and
while German rivals, under the fierce pressure of European environment regulations, have adopted turbocharging as a way to utilise smaller, thriftier powerplants while maintaining outputs. And the Lexus solution to lowering consumption and emissions, hybrid power, is nowhere in sight for the RC coupe.
it was off limits to most buyers,” he continues. "This new vehicle brings a portion of LFA's excitement to a more attainable market segment and it will boost the brand's appeal even further." The RC 350 Luxury offers a high level of standard equipment, from its 233kW engine and eight-speed auto transmission to LED headlights,
530Nm, which find the road via a stiff chassis, racetrack-developed suspension and brakes and a torque-vectoring differential. The Carbon model seeks to up the performance ante by reducing weight, using carbonfibre for the bonnet, roof and some interior trim, plus an aerodynamic rear wing.

MAGIC MONTE Sundance Marine represents the Italian designed and built Monte Carlo Yachts. At this year’s Show the gorgeous Monte Carlo MC5 will make her Queensland debut. MAVERICK’S 440 CATAMARAN
Maverick 440

A new member of the SCIBS’ family is Maverick Yachts, who will be bringing their stunning Maverick 440 catamaran to this year’s Show. Based in Cape Town, South Africa, Maverick Yachts was started by sailors Rudi and Deslynn Pretorius. “Our dream was to enjoy extended blue water cruising without relying on a crew,” Deslynn says. “We needed to build a cruising catamaran; a yacht that could be handled effortlessly and that offered genuine 5-star comfort, safety and reliability. Rudi and Deslynn called on expert designer Phil Southwell and a team of skilled craftsmen to create the Maverick 400. The Maverick 400 has won the South African Sailing Boat of the Year Award each year since its launch. Following the success of the Maverick 400, the Maverick 440 has been created, with larger transoms and an increased waterline length which results in faster speeds and a smoother ride. Visit the Maverick Yachts display on E Marina.

SAILING HOLIDAYS
SUNDANCER One of the highlights of this year’s Show will be the Queensland Marine Centre (QMC) launch of the new model Sea Ray 540 Sundancer, a 54-foot yacht that demands attention. “It’s fantastic to get a boat of this uncompromising quality into Australia and to launch it at one of the country’s biggest boat shows,” said Andrew Bennett from QMC. “It’s only the third of this new model to be built in the world. It has only just been launched in America, so we’re excited to be bringing it to SCIBS this year.” Visit the Queensland Marine Centre display on E Marina.
If you love sailing check out the Mariner Boating Holidays’ exhibition at SCIBS. Husband and wife team Trevor and Maggie Joyce run Mariner Boating Holidays, organising sailing holidays worldwide and specialising in Yacht Rally adventures. These are hosted sailing events, based around a SCIBS yacht charter in some of the world’s best cruising grounds such as Turkey, Greece, the Caribbean, France and Tahiti. The rally package includes the bareboat charter, boating expenses such as marina berthing, a social program, fun races, boutique hotel accommodation and Mariner Boating tour guides. Mariner’s clients are generally sailors with varying levels of experience, who join a Yacht Rally as a single traveller, or with a partner or with a group of friends who charter the whole yacht. Operations Manager Lauren White will be attending the Show, where their 2016 Yacht Rally program will be launched. “Sailing and spending time on the water is exactly what we love to do, so we want to engage with likeminded people and introduce them to our unique product,” Lauren says. “What better way to see old friends and hopefully make some new ones while we are at it?” Visit Mariner Boating Holidays display in Pavilion A.

GranTurismo MC Stradale Maserati
A NEW MASERATI For the third consecutive year, EuroMarque Maserati Brisbane is a major sponsor of SCIBS. In 2014, EuroMarque chose SCIBS to launch the Maserati Ghibli and displayed six prestige vehicles in a showroom above the marina, complete with VIP lounge to entertain guests. At the entrance to the boat show, the Maserati Ghibli ‘hero vehicle’ was presented on an elevated podium, attracting admiring looks and ‘selfies’ by visitors relishing the chance to see the new model up close. EuroMarque is thrilled to be launching the new Granturismo Trofeo Maserati, a limited edition, sport-optioned model developed from the previous Granturismo, at the 2015 SCIBS. Marketing Manager at EuroMarque Maserati Brisbane, Clinton Wright, said he believes this year’s launch will even top last year’s spectacular showing. “We think it will have exceptional appeal for its dynamic profile and we hope it will attract even more attention,” Clinton said. Visit the EuroMarque Maserati Brisbane display on The Boardwalk.
PALM BEACH PRESTIGE Mark Richards’ passion for designing, building and racing sailing yachts at sea, forged the culture that drives Palm Beach Motor Yachts and its team to build the very best pleasure boats available. At this year’s SCIBS, Palm Beach Motor Yachts will be showcasing two of their most popular models, the Palm Beach 45 and Palm Beach 55. The PB 55 comes with a two or three cabin layout and rear tender garage, and the PB 45 was developed from the mould of the popular PB 50 in response to clients asking for a lower priced, entry level boat with more contemporary styling and family-focused robust finishes. Visit the Palm Beach Motor Yachts display on D Marina.

WELL TRAVELLED
Sea change Clare E. Urwin visited New Zealand for the first time in over ten years.
Milford Sound – South Island, New Zealand
Seabourn Odyssey
75
Auckland – New Zealand
RETURNING TO YOUR COUNTRY OF BIRTH after many years’ absence is interesting. Hopefully it’s also pleasant and often surprising. My ‘going back’ trip to New Zealand after more than a decade away was all of these things. The reasons for the trip were many. Recuperation for my husband Bryan after a major back operation was the main one – seeing some long lost relatives was another and, finally, everyone needs to have some indulgent R&R occasionally. A cruise seemed to tick all the boxes, so in early February we flew off to Auckland to join the Seabourn Odyssey on a 16-night voyage around New Zealand and then across the Tasman, back to Australia. Auckland was the first surprise. It’s a big city now, grown-up and sophisticated. The harbour area was rejuvenated for the America’s Cup and it shows. Not as busy as Sydney obviously, but if it wasn’t actually ‘buzzing’ it was certainly bustling with ferries, pleasure boats and yachts, including the odd super one. Evidently, there are more sailing boats per head of population in New Zealand than in any other country in the world. No wonder Auckland is called the City of Sails. It’s perfect for bigger ships too and the Seabourn Odyssey looked wonderful moored close to the city centre. Carrying a maximum of 458 passengers, she is relatively small for a cruise
76
liner, however being this size certainly gives the advantage of being able to dock closer in. Her intimate scale allows access to hidden gems and smaller marquee ports too. Seabourn has three similar award-winning ships; one of the most modern fleets at sea. As well as the Odyssey, there is the Seabourn Sojourn and the Seabourn Quest. These ultraluxury, all-suite vessels have the reputation of an extraordinary level of personlised service with nearly one staff member per guest. Indulgent R&R is what they are famous for! The suites on board are well appointed and spacious, with 13 categories ranging in size from 27 to 109 square metres of indoor space. Most have verandas, which add considerable outdoor living space, and all have expansive ocean views framed by either a picture window or the glass doors of the veranda. As you would expect on a luxury cruise, our suite was thoughtfully designed and tastefully decorated, having a queen size bed, a comfortable living area complete with walk-in closet, a granite bathroom with separate bath and shower, plus a personal bar and refrigerator well stocked with our alcoholic preferences. A nice touch and all co-coordinated before our arrival. The staterooms on the Odyssey were carefully and sensibly arranged too. They seemed to flow
well, all were fully utilised and the Seabourn Square, which replaces the conventional reception lobby, was innovative and welcoming. The service onboard was particularly thoughtful and intuitive. Originating from all parts of the world, but predominately Europe, the staff really seemed to care about providing genuine hospitality. In our case, with mobility problems, we were given sympathetic and careful attention at all times. It’s very relaxing to be looked after by such caring hosts. Sailing out of Auckland in perfect weather with a spectacular sunset was a great start to the cruise and the next morning we arrived at Tauranga in the Bay of Plenty. That city had certainly changed too. Now the centre of the sixth largest urban area in New Zealand, Tauranga is one of the country’s main cities for business, international trade, culture, fashion and horticultural science. The port is New Zealand’s largest and as we were docked on a Sunday, the harbour was soon full of pleasure boats of all shapes and sizes. Originally famous for beaches and game fishing, the Western Bay is now known for much more, providing arguably the ‘ultimate holiday’ experience. That evening we sailed south towards Wellington and the following day was the first of our five ‘sea days’ on this particular cruise.

Surprisingly ‘sea days’ always seem to be particularly busy. Apart from enjoying the sunshine around the pool and seemingly eating and drinking non-stop, there are numerous activities to do onboard. You can play bridge or mah jong, join team trivia, have dancing and magic lessons, do wine tasting, go to interesting lectures or cocktail demonstrations, practice shuffleboard and golf putting, and if all of that doesn’t appeal you can shop in the boutiques, be pampered in the spa, work out in the gym or just go to the casino! A cruise around New Zealand is remarkably scenic in many ways, but it’s the continuous mountainous terrain that provides such a stunning backdrop to any view that makes it so special. Entering Wellington harbour was no exception. The steep green hills surrounding the city seem to drop directly into the sea. Named by the Lonely Planet as the Coolest Little Capital in the World, Wellington is a deservedly popular tourist destination due to its compact nature, cultural attractions, award-winning restaurants and access to government agencies. The South Island was the next stop and sailing through the Marlborough Sounds to the pretty little fishing village of Picton was a lovely entry. The birthplace of New Zealand’s now world-renowned wine industry, exploring the Marlborough region is a must on any travel itinerary. >>

Akaroa – South Island, New Zealand
A full day of wine tasting and eating fabulous food surrounded by gorgeous scenery made this particular visit one of the highlights of the cruise. On all of the port calls on the trip, small group shore excursions and local tours are available. These can be arranged onboard and are of varying degrees of duration and exertion, depending on the individual’s physical ability. Alternatively, passengers can explore the locality independently and at their own pace. Naturally the weather became distinctly cooler as we headed south, but sunshine prevailed and we had no significant rain during the whole trip. We stopped at Kaikura (famous for whale watching), then arrived at Akaroa, a charming little village on Banks Peninsula. Originally settled by the French, the quaint wooden houses with wrought iron decorations and cottage gardens behind picket fences were picture-perfect. We docked at Port Chalmers next, the port for the city of Dunedin, often referred to as the Edinburgh of the South. Finally, Oban, on beautiful and unspoiled Stewart Island, was our last stop in New Zealand. Hard to believe, but scenic-wise, the cruise became even more spectacular after that, when we sailed around Fiordland National Park, a World Heritage Site, including Milford, Dusky and Doubtful Sounds. Carved by glaciers over 100,000 years ago, the landscape is one where waterfalls cascade through ancient rainforests hundreds of metres straight into deep black fiords.
78
Milford Sound was described by Rudyard Kipling as the eighth wonder of the world. It has been judged the world’s top travel destination in an international survey and is acclaimed as New Zealand’s most famous tourist destination. Growing up in New Zealand I have been to Milford several times but seeing it again was just as amazing and breathtaking as ever. Most of our fellow travellers onboard the Seabourn Odyssey were American and they all seemed to be really impressed with the scenery. Fiordland with blue skies, sunshine and calm seas is certainly picture postcard stuff. I therefore exploited my heritage bragging rights and thoroughly enjoyed doing so … These predominately American guests, who naturally demand high quality food, certainly receive it from Seabourn. The steaks were superb, the range of ice creams incredible, there were fresh berries every morning and the French Fries were fabulous! Bryan was in heaven. All the restaurants onboard are complimentary and you can dine when, where and with whom you wish. Creating wonderful dining experiences is an integral part of their hospitality and day after day Seabourn seems to offer a deliciously tempting array of choices. As well as the fine dining restaurant, there are more casual indoor/outdoor options and of course in-suite dining if you prefer. There are also open bars throughout the ship with complimentary fine wines poured at lunch and dinner.
A final special ‘food’ experience must be mentioned. During one of our three days on the Tasman, which incidentally totally contradicted its reputation and gave us flat calm conditions, the Seabourn chefs put on their traditional ‘galley market lunch’. This is an extravagant buffet array of every food imaginable as well as access to the working galley where even more choices are available. The massive dessert table topped off with intricate chocolate carvings was amazing. Seabourn certainly deserves credit for the people they employ especially the captain, officers and staff on this particular cruise. Any small problem, and I must say, there weren’t many, was fixed immediately. For instance our bed was too hard for Bryan’s temporarily delicate back, so it was given extra padding without delay. After enjoyable stops at both Melbourne and Geelong our cruise ended in Sydney. Sailing into that harbour at sunrise was special. From our vantage point on the water, seeing the Opera House, the bridge and the city skyscrapers all glowing gold in the dawn sunlight was amazingly spectacular. Following a short flight back to Brisbane, we returned to Queensland refreshed, relaxed and suitably rested. No wonder cruising has become so very popular. Incidentally, Bryan and I are ready to do it again at any time … For more information and bookings contact Cove Travel.

They may cast a temporarily sombre air on your otherwise carefree vacation, but for the sake of humanity it is worth visiting the site where the USS Arizona sank and the US finally got involved in WWII. The Pacific Aviation museum hosts a unique collection of vintage aircraft in its WWII-era hangars and allows you to explore the original airfield and control tower of Ford Island. These still bear the damage sustained from battle
82
during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941. There is a certain gravitas at the site, the respectful silence that occupies all battlefields and spaces of military consequence which commemorate the fallen. Looking back further, the Polynesian Culture is worthy of attention. That the native Polynesians found their way from other Pacific islands to the Hawaiian islands using nothing more than the stars for navigation and canoes for transport, is quite miraculous. Inspired by the migratory patterns of birds, the first people are thought to have arrived at the archipelago between 300-800CE. However, it was not until 1778 that Captain James Cook made formal contact with Hawaii, more than 1,000 years after its settlement. An
interesting aside, it was at the hands of Hawaiians that Cook, the west’s greatest explorer, died on the shores of Kealakekua Bay in a scuffle over a row boat in 1779. The initial Polynesian social hierarchy centred upon religious leaders and a ruling class. In 1810 King Kamehameha I unified the islands and created the Kingdom of Hawaii. The royal dynasty lasted 83 years, during which the ‘Iolani palace was built on Oahu. Located in downtown Honolulu, the palace is the only vestige of royalty within the United States and had electricity four years before the Whitehouse and Windsor Palace. Its colonial façade is an unexpected presence in the land of the free, and forces you to reconsider the role of the native Hawaiians during the state’s annexation.
Another popular attraction is Doris Duke’s Shangri La, a quirky display of old wealth. The heiress of the American Tobacco Company, Ms. Duke fell in love with Hawaii during her honeymoon. In 1936 she purchased land at Ka’alawai with the intention of building a home reflecting her passion for Islamic Art and Architecture. Commissioning works from artisans in Morocco, Iran, Syria, and India, she amassed one of the world’s largest private collections of Islamic Art; a melange of bespoke ceilings, furnishings, doors, ceramic tiles, and decorative screens incorporate traditions from the diverse cultures of the Islamic world. Add to that a tropical backdrop overlooking Diamond Head, and you are privy to a truly unique and astonishing amalgamation of east and west. >>
83
Once the cultural history of Hawaii reveal themselves, the geographical features of the island take on a narrative of their own. Do not limit your experience of Oahu’s beaches to Waikiki. To truly understand the beauty of its islands you must fling yourself into their dramatic and stirring topography. For unparalleled panoramic views, hike up the Koko Head Crater for sunrise. Somewhat of a Mecca for photographers, on a clear morning the horizon will divulge some of the other Hawaiian islands. Looking from a high vantage point into the water, you may also spy a special marine dweller as it passes by; the manta rays grow so big you can make out their mouths from hundreds of metres away. Another hike up Diamond Head affords views over Waikiki and also around the southern windward side of the island. It is only by sweating it out on the steep paths that you can understand the majesty of the topography. Sheer cliff faces rise without warning from flat pastures; rugged formations are overgrown with lush tropical abundance, softening their countenance. Immersion in the backdrop allows you to imagine the inhabitants’ trepidation and toil upon first settlement. The aesthetic is divine but the land does not naturally lend itself to life. The first settlers brought with them everything necessary to survive, including animals and edible vegetation. Only two mammals made it to the Hawaiian archipelago of their own accord, the Monk seal and the bat. Whatever else you discover here has come from human intervention. Man’s influence over the islands is so pervasive, and yet so respectful, that the spirit must be buoyed by the seamless tract of human and nature. Make sure you spend some time exploring the island in a rental car. The distances aren’t great, but private transport is essential.
84
If you are visiting in the right season, you must devote a day watching the Vans Triple Crown on Sunset Beach, and the Pipeline. The atmosphere of a Surf World Championship is second to none; world-class athleticism meets laid back surf culture. While you are there, hunt down Fumi’s Shrimp Truck for life-changing local garlic prawns. Take a dip at Waimea Bay, and if you want to tick some stunning landscapes off the list, be sure to visit Lanikai Beach, snorkel at Hanauma Bay, and hike the Makapu’u Lighthouse trail. If you can entice a local to show you their favourite haunts, you will enjoy the rarer pleasures of the island. O’ahu Photography Tours will not only guide you down a dirt path to a stunning sunset, but also give you professional tips to get the best out of your camera. In Waikiki, enjoy the best of what its history has to offer. The Moana Surfrider, Waikiki’s first hotel, is deluxe not only in its accommodations, but also in its locale. The Surfrider is somewhat of an icon in its lore; it was the centre of a scurrilous murder mystery in 1905, and somewhat ironically hosted Agatha Christie during her 1922 holiday. King Edward VIII also enjoyed the comfort of the Moana Surfrider in 1920. Positioned on Waikiki beach, the colonial architecture paints a pretty picture against its neighbouring, less aesthetic hotels. Now is the time to indulge in a Mai Tai or three in the open courtyard or wander along the shorefront and soak in the ambience of its lights. If you thought Oahu had only sun and sand to offer, then think again. While basking in the sunshine, you can also revel in the comprehensive history – social, cultural, military, geographical – that ensconces the island. Follow me to Finolhu New York-based Australian jewellery designer and style icon, Samantha Wills, shares her Maldives travel blog.
LAST NIGHT I FLEW INTO SYDNEY, from the Maldives; and I’m already planning on when we can return to paradise. There are very few times I can remember being absolutely breath-taken, but arriving at the newest Club Med property; Finolhu Villas, about a 30-minute speed boat ride from Male airport, had me lost for words and catching my breath. Officially opening on 31 January, 2015, this truly spectacular property, designed by world renowned architect Yugi Yamakazi, is not only the ultimate in luxury accommodation, it is the very first, 100 per cent solar run resort in the Maldives. From the lighting, air conditioning and hot water, the entire property produces zero emissions. It truly is the ultimate in eco-luxury. Arriving by speedboat, the crystal aqua waters are a colour so purely electric, I don’t believe you could Pantone match it if you tried. Once at Finolhu (which has only 52 villas on the entire island) you will be greeted by the resort’s General Manager, and, wait for it; your very own, personal butler.

Our villa was one of the over-water bungalows, designed to bring the outdoors in. With the oceanfacing walls made to slide away, you are inviting the ocean into the living space and bedroom. It also flows through to a bohemian luxe outdoor bathroom, so you can shower to the sound track of little lapping waves, kissing the stilts of
If, like us, you also want to add in some adventure to your relaxation, I would highly recommend booking to go scuba diving. Whether you are a beginner or expert diver, Maldives’ diving is world class, as are the Club Med Dive team. We did five dives on our stay at Finolhu, each more breathtaking then the rest. It feels like
your bungalow. Incredibly private, and each with its own personal plunge pool, one of my favourite things about the villa is the back staircase that literally takes you from the deck into the ocean. Club Med is known for its ‘all inclusive’ concepts; the price you pay includes all your food and beverage. But if you are looking for mediocre buffet food and a basic bar – you won’t find that here. Dining is done in an over-water restaurant. The bar has a glass floor, so you can see the sea life beneath, and the only buffet is for some lunch services when their best chefs prepare the day’s fresh catch, or seafood pasta, in front of you. The a la carte menu changes daily, and offers many 5-star options, across four courses.
you are in Finding Nemo – such is the colour of the reef and the fish you swim with. There are many activities to do on and around the island, all at your own pace and leisure; diving, jet skiing, snorkelling, parasailing ... or enjoy the beautiful spa. You can also do what we did and have the spa come to you, where they set up the massage bed on the deck of your villa ... I could go on and on about the incredible holiday that we had, but you need to go and experience it for yourself. The Maldives is a place dreams are made of, and if you wish to experience it in the most luxurious way, you cannot go past Club Med Finolhu Villas. Journey into paradise – SW x

WELL TRAVELLED
The traveller Daly Cherry-Evans — Professional Rugby League Player
Which city/country is your most travelled to destination? Being a Queenslander but living down on the northern beaches of Sydney, I find myself travelling back to Brisbane a lot of the time for work commitments but mainly to visit my family. Is there a particular place on your travel ‘bucket list’? Although I am yet to get there I think Vegas is the obvious answer when considering any form of holiday bucket list. It’s somewhere I feel would facilitate the perfect boys’ trip. If you could travel in luxury to anywhere in the world, where would you go? I would book a first class ticket for my partner Vessa and myself straight to New York City. This would definitely be a kid-free trip! What is your most essential travel item? My mobile phone. Whether it’s sending an email or playing a game, I’m on my phone a lot. Something just doesn’t feel right when I don’t have it on me. Do you have any tips for avoiding jetlag? I find sleeping on the flight to your destination will keep you in good stead to explore your way through the day and fall straight asleep at an appropriate hour that night … although I understand that is easier said than done for some. Window or aisle seat? I’ll happily swap with the friends or family I’m
travelling with if they have a preference, as I’m not bothered with either. But if I’m forced to choose I’ll take the window.
and unfortunately it was during the devastating Hurricane Sandy. We were in lockdown for three of our five days in NYC.
Who would you most like to sit next to on a long flight and why? My beautiful partner Vessa. After five years and two children together we still have no trouble keeping each other amused with our terrible sense of humour.
What is the most interesting/exotic dish you have tasted? My parents did a fantastic job to convince me to eat some kangaroo fresh off the BBQ on a family holiday throughout the Northern Territory many years ago.
How do you pass the time while in transit? I’m quite lucky as I can sleep very easily on planes or bus rides so it’s an easy time consumer for me. Otherwise I enjoy watching movies or listening to music.
What has been your best overseas dining experience? I patiently waited in a standard New York City line to grab a bite to eat at burger shop called Shake Shack. In my opinion it was worth the wait.
What is your favourite piece of technology? Well it’s no secret from my answer earlier that my phone holds somewhat of a priority in my life. Phones these days give you access to music, movies and games that are a quick fix for the kids when they are unsettled during transit.
What is your favourite iconic landmark? I love what Australia has to offer and that is why Ayers Rock (Uluru) is my favourite iconic landmark.
What has been your best/favourite overseas purchase? I purchased a pair of Nike shoes four years ago while touring through the UK with an Australian side. They still get used to this day. Share your best/strangest travel story. I hinted earlier in the piece a trip to New York is on the cards for me and my partner. Last time we allocated to stay there for five nights
What is the best thing about travelling? Being able to get away from the routine lifestyle of a professional athlete. What do you always do before you go? I make sure the last thing I do before boarding a flight is to call loved ones. Car, coach, plane or ship? Plane. Where to next? Vegas … ha-ha.

The perks of home ownership THE GREAT AUSTRALIAN DREAM … to own your own home in your favourite location. And what better location than right here in our beautiful backyard. We have the most picturesque places and amazing weather, along with some magnificent architecture, that make Australian property so easy to love. We could easily talk about the currently strong property market, and how demand is heating up along with record low interest rates, but let’s take some time to just appreciate five reasons why we love owning property, whether it be your own home or an investment property. Homeownership builds wealth over time: Ever since we were young, most of us were taught the value of owning our own home. However, in the past decade, real estate turbulence has shaken up people’s confidence in homeownership. The reality is that we are in a ‘new market’ so to speak and Australian property has great potential. Owning your home can be a very savvy financial move, you’re

investing in something that can potentially make you money in the long term. You build equity monthly: Equity in your home is the amount of money you can sell it for, minus the amount you still owe on it. Every month you make mortgage payments, in turn reducing the amount you owe. At the same time, your home should be growing in value, which will increase the equity available to you. A common way for home owners to build their portfolio is by tapping into this equity which enables them to purchase more properties. You get to do what you want with it: If you want hot pink walls, then you get hot pink walls! If you want a bigger bathtub, you get that bigger bathtub! When you own your own home you can do so many

things to add a touch of your personality and make your home an ideal and enjoyable place to live. A mortgage is like a forced savings plan: Paying down your mortgage every month and reducing the amount of your principal is like a forced savings plan. Each month you are building up more valuable equity in your home – which is a good thing! In the long term, buying is cheaper than renting: Within the first few years, it may be cheaper to rent. However, over time, as the interest portion of your mortgage payment decreases, the interest that you pay will eventually be lower than the rent you would have been paying. Most importantly, you aren’t throwing all that money away on rent. Instead of paying off your landlord’s home, you get to pay off your own! So if you’re thinking about buying your first home, or maybe upgrading, consider the fantastic benefits of homeownership, then go and buy that dream home you’ve been fantasising about.

LOOKING GOOD
Time to Tango Located in the heart of The Marine Village, Tango Lima offers a relaxed shopping experience.
WITH EVERYTHING FROM GIFTS, beauty products, candles, jewellery and more, Tango Lima is one of Sanctuary Cove’s most eclectic retailers. Tanya Lord opened the store eight years ago after a long career as a business development manager for a large property group. “Once I had my son I had to think of what I could do to keep me busy, pay the bills and still allow me to be at my son’s sports days and school functions,” Tanya says. “My train of thought was to make a business out of something I liked doing. “My favourite pastime has always been shopping, so I thought of opening a shop that didn’t just focus on one thing; a shop that sold lots of products for lots of different people.” So Tango Lima was born with the motto ‘An excuse to buy for anyone at anytime’. “It really is a shop that caters for all ages and all types of people, especially those who are really hard to buy for,” Tanya says. “I source products from all over the world and also try and support local handcrafted businesses. “We have staple lines that we sell all-year round like the MOR and Maine Beach beauty products, and Palm Beach candles and diffusers, but most of our products are unique and constantly changing. “What you see today will not be here in three months’ time; the whole shop will be different again.”
98
As well as sourcing products from around the world, Tanya’s talents extend to designing her own range of jewellery – Born with Wisdom. “It’s one of our bestselling ranges,” Tanya says. “I created this range myself about four years ago when I realised there was a gap in the market for simple, gift-ready jewellery for all ages at an affordable price.” The sterling silver jewellery in the Born with Wisdom range starts from $39.95, with each piece coming gift boxed with beautiful words. Tanya says winter is promising to be an exciting time at Tango Lima. “We have lots of seasonal trends arriving over the next couple of months,” she says. “Warm copper and bronze homewares, frames and wall art, as well as the new Volupspa Candle ranges which are always popular, not only for their luxurious packaging but exquisite aromas. “We also have the new range from Riley Burnett which features semi precious stones and silver in a variety of bracelets, necklaces and earrings. “In the men’s area we have lots of gadgets and books guaranteed to raise a smile as well. “As I said, we have something for everyone, but not items you see anywhere else. Each piece is handpicked by myself, and once it’s gone, it’s gone.”
Tanya says she loves her location in Sanctuary Cove. “I never tire of driving into the village, it really does have a community feel to it,” Tanya says. “Probably 60 per cent of my customers are local, and being a small business it’s very important to have that support. “We have a mix of day trippers and local customers and always try to make people feel welcome but not obligated when they enter the shop. “The shop always smells divine with the mixture of all the soaps, diffusers and room sprays, we have chilled music playing and it’s nice to see customers browsing around or laughing at some of our cheekier products. “I have known some of my customers for six or seven years and we have seen marriages, divorces, births; some days it’s more of a social catch up than work as customers pop in to have a chat and grab a gift.” Tanya posts new arrivals on the Tango Lima Facebook page (Tangolimashop) and offers a free postal service for all jewellery and smaller non-breakable items. SPORT REPORT
Improved performance Michael Jones from MJ Golf Performance is committed to improving your game. WORDS RHONDA OXNAM
WHETHER YOU ARE A SOCIAL PLAYER (like me), a low handicapper or a touring pro, there is one thing all golfers want to do … and that’s improve their game. Enter Michael Jones from MJ Golf Performance. A former touring professional and current head teaching pro at Sanctuary Cove, Michael is passionate about both the game and the dynamics behind it. “My background is in sports science,” Michael explains. “With golf, people tend to think their game can be helped with a new head or a new shaft when it could be purely a physical thing. “I also think that a lot of people see golf as a social game rather than a sport, but, really, to stay out there for five hours, to keep your swing the same, to put up with the weather conditions and your playing partners, is both a physical and mental challenge. “If you look at professional golfers like Adam Scott and Tiger Woods, they’ve got a physical conditioning program that’s tailor-made to allow them to play 72 holes of golf, complete practice rounds, sit on planes, etc, etc.” So where does that leave us social golfers? “There are different levels of golf fitness programs that are totally applicable to any golfer,” Michael insists. “Teaching-wise, we are at the stage where we can advocate a pre-game warm up, and post-round recovery programs, rather than just hitting balls on the driving range.
102
“When I’m coaching, the factors I always take into account are: technically, do they understand technique? … physically, are they put together the way we need them? … mentally, can they think the way they need to think? … and confidence, do they have any? These four things are what I look for regardless of age, gender and ability. “As far as swing goes, I‘ve never assessed any two golfers the same way. How I teach you or what I think works for you might be completely different to what I’d teach somebody else. “There is no declared methodology, I’m a bit more about improvisation. It may not be technically perfect, but if it allows someone to play twice a week and they enjoy their golf, then I find that way more satisfying.” And Michael knows all about enjoying golf …he has been playing since he was around 12-years-of-age. “Attending a boarding school in Newcastle, which was a rugby league town, I was quite the exception once I started to play golf,” Michael admits. “I worked out at the age of 12 or 13 that I didn’t like getting my head smashed in playing football so my father took me to the golf course and gave me a set of clubs and it went from there.” Having quickly risen through the junior ranks and turning professional at 18, Michael also completed a traineeship to become an Australian PGA member, which allowed him to teach.
After going through Qualifying School, Michael moved to Japan where he spent four years on the Asian Tour. While he looks back fondly on his time there, the affable Aussie readily admits he didn’t have enough ‘mongrel’ in him to really enjoy the professional golfer’s lifestyle. Returning to Newcastle, Michael took on a new role which saw him working closely with the strength and conditioning coach of the Newcastle Knights rugby league team. “That gave me a lot of experience in handling professional athletes and an understanding of good physical and technical preparation,” Michael says. “Their performance, their preparation, their recovery, the monitoring of their nutrition, hydration and fat levels, was way beyond what any golfer was doing back then.” It was during this time, while he was in his mid 20s, that Michael received the shock diagnosis that he had testicular cancer. “What I’ve learnt from that experience is that you can always come back to the basic model, where you are quite happy to have food, shelter, and clothes … and whatever ability you’ve got, you should use it,” he says. Following treatment, Michael and his wife Rebecca relocated to the Gold Coast, where he began his long association with Sanctuary Cove. “My first job on arriving was with Asmedia Golf Academy, which operated on The Palms at Sanctuary Cove. This led to the General Manager
offering me a position as a teaching professional ten years ago, and I have been head coach for the past three,” he says. Now 13 years cancer-free, and the happy, healthy father of two children, Lachlan, eight, and six-year-old Beth, Michael’s attitude to golf has understandably changed. “People get really upset if the ball’s not going where they want it to, but you can’t compare it to getting a diagnosis like that,” he says. “From a golf point of view, I think you should ditch what’s not working and operate on what’s going well for you because, at the end of the day, it’s only a game.” Having said that, Michael still takes his role as a coach very seriously. “A lot of the tour pros that I work with probably think I’m quite hard as a coach because I place some expectations on them to make sure they are training like they should be. But I feel that if you have an opportunity then you should shake the tree till everything’s out rather than just assuming that things will come.” Speaking of opportunities, Michael has several big name golfers under his tutelage including up and coming young guns, Baxter Ward, Ellie Taylor and Isabel Taylor, and current touring professionals Kevin Marques, Brad Kennedy and Matthew Millar. Both Brad and Matthew have played British Opens and achieved wins on the Australian PGA and Japan Tours as a result of his coaching. “From a professional point of view is great to be coaching tour pros who are making a living from playing golf,” Michael says. “Having Brad and Matthew play in the British Open in 2011 and 2012 was probably the pinnacle for me. “I was a bit awestruck when I arrived, but then you click into gear and try to help them work at things because a Major is a big experience. The galleries, the atmosphere, the pressure … you are just trying to keep them as ‘normal’ as possible, which is a bit hard when there are 50,000 people around.” Listening to Michael talk about his experiences, it is obvious how much he enjoys coaching, but the question had to be asked … do you still enjoy playing golf? “I do … but I laugh a lot more now, because with everything I’ve been through I’m a lot more appreciative of being with the rank and file golfers,” he insists. “I’m a bit more on their page because I understand how they feel on the golf course.” MJ Golf Performance

Stage presence One stage, four music legends, one night only. A LINE-UP OF AUSTRALIAN music superstars is set to take to the stage at Jupiters Hotel & Casino on Saturday 6 June. From the recognisable voice of Daryl Braithwaite to the haunting tones of Wendy Matthews; from the diverse blues-based sound of Russell Morris to the iconic songs from Mental as Anything; the aptly titled One Night Stand Legends Live concert promises a night packed full of classic hits and memorable performances. These four talented artists have been at the forefront of the Australian music industry for over three decades. To see just one of them live is an incredible experience, to witness all four perform on the same stage, on the same night, will be a truly unmissable event. Daryl Braithwaite An Aria Hall of Fame inductee, Daryl Braithwaite was a member of iconic Australian band, Sherbet, and has also had an incredible solo career. His chart-topping hit, The Horses, was voted ‘Australian Song of the Year’ at the 1991 Australian Music Awards. Wendy Matthews With seven Arias, 19 hit singles and seven platinum-plus selling albums, Wendy Matthews is regarded as one of Australia’s leading female singers. Best known for her heart-warming ballads, such as The Day You Went Away, Wendy has over 30 years experience in the music industry.

Russell Morris Best known for his 1969 number one single The Real Thing – one of the greatest psychedelic pop songs ever recorded – Russell Morris has a musical pedigree that has spanned decades. His 2013 blues album, Sharkmouth, defied all expectations to become his highest-selling album. Mental As Anything There is no doubt, Mental As Anything are legends in the Australian music industry – both for their iconic hits and the folklore behind the band. Some of their classics include The Nips Are Getting Bigger, Too Many Times, If You Leave Me Can I Come Too? and Live It Up. Managing Director, Queensland Geoff Hogg said the show offers a unique opportunity to witness four of Australia’s finest performers singing their greatest hits – old, new and re-imagined. And, given that concert-goers will undoubtedly find themselves drawn to their feet, Jupiters is making the dance floor open to all. “Come along and see why these living legends are still performing to packed audiences after decades in the music industry,” Geoff said. A hopping success A record number of visitors made their way to Sanctuary Cove in April for Easterfest, a week-long celebration of Easter.
OVER THE YEARS Sanctuary Cove’s Easter celebrations have become one of the most popular events on the annual calendar, so in 2015 organisers decided to stretch out the fun across an entire week. Easterfest 2015 kicked off on Easter Sunday, with the traditional Easter Eggstravaganza. Over 8,000 people visited Sanctuary Cove to enjoy the festivities and celebrate the day with family and friends. Highlights included a visit from the Easter Bunny, an obstacle course for the kids, train rides, pony rides, baby animal farm, craft activities and a Magic Show performed by Master Magician and Entertainer of the Year – Matt Hollywood. The Interactive Easter Egg Hunt was also a big hit, especially for Jasper Abel who won a hamper of delicious Easter eggs as well

as a $100 Sanctuary Cove Marine Village gift voucher. An egg hunt of a different kind followed, with the 97.3FM Golden Egg promotion. Throughout Easterfest week, the team at 97.3FM were dropping clues on air as to the whereabouts of the Golden Egg. On Saturday, 11 April as the crowds poured into The Marine Village, the 97.3FM team were onsite for the hunt, with live crosses throughout the day. Visitors, young and old, threw themselves into the quest and enjoyed free churros, popcorn and fairy floss. Nine-year-old Nina Costello was the lucky person who followed the clues and discovered the giant Golden Egg. Nina was rewarded with a $1000 Sanctuary Cove Marine Village gift voucher for her efforts.
The Easterfest fun continued long after the last chocolate egg had been eaten, with a host of activities taking place throughout The Marine Village from Monday, 6 April through to Sunday, 12 April. Children of all ages enjoyed activities including active games, inflatables and Easter craft. Mulpha Sanctuary Cove Head of Marketing and Events Johan Hasser said the new week-long format of Easterfest proved to be a huge success. “Easter at Sanctuary Cove has become a really wonderful tradition for so many families, and we are thrilled that Easterfest was such a success,” Johan said. “We had families come from all over to enjoy the events and all that The Marine Village has to offer and there was a wonderful Easter atmosphere.”

Get set for an upbeat few months and, to keep on top of a busy routine, a solid health and fitness routine will support your efforts and help avoid fatigue. You’ll enjoy revitalising both your home and your personal life and, if relationships have been strained, you’ll relish the chance to get these back on an even keel. A lovely visitor or a trip, and for some, blossoming romance, towards the end of June will appeal. And, if you feel like a total reinvention of yourself, such as a new look, new work or hobbies, your efforts will be rewarded.
The focus over the next two months will fall squarely in your work and home sectors. It’s a great time to look for new ways to boost your income; your status or direction, and to feather your nest. A wonderful opportunity may arise toward the end of June. Above all, this is a time of new beginnings for you, so keep an eye open, and celebrate life’s gifts.
It’s time to broaden your horizons; and whether you do this literally, through travel; or metaphorically by way of study or spiritual interests, you’ll feel motivated to enter new territory in some way in June and July. And this will apply not only to your personal life; but also to your professional career or status so take the initiative, and step up a level.
You’ll feel motivated to re-appraise a vital area of your life, such as finances or where you place your loyalties and your efforts in life. Life’s luxuries will appeal and relationships could feel refreshed as you get increasingly in touch with your feelings over the next eight weeks. The full moon on July 2 could prove decisive with shared concerns.
