editor’s letter As I write this, back at my desk after a wonderful two-week break, I find myself thinking about … holidays. Of course, there is a very good reason for this. Our fabulous Feb/Mar edition is dedicated to all things travel so I am constantly reading about holidays, writing about holidays and, yes, planning my next holiday. If travel is also on your mind don’t miss our special ‘Holiday Experiences’ feature which starts on page 71. From luxurious cruises to island escapes, local getaways to overseas voyages, this informative guide is sure to inspire your wanderlust. One group of Gold Coast cycling enthusiasts definitely caught the holiday bug, packing their bikes for an adventure through the Italian Alps. Riding through snow and sunshine, up hill and down dale, the five lycra-clad mates share some highlights of their journey in our Well Travelled section. Still on the same subject, our ‘Traveller’ in this edition is Nine News Reporter Carrie-Anne Greenbank, our beauty editor focuses on onboard spas and our competition offers one lucky reader the chance to win a luxurious 10 night cruise to Asia. Our Cove Living story also ties in with the theme, showcasing the appropriately named Leisure Farm Resort. While this luxury development, nestled in the picturesque Malaysian hillside, is more ‘home than holiday’ it is certainly a very relaxing place to live. If you plan on staying closer to home this year we have some great reading for you too. Our feature interview is with award-winning actress Emma Thompson, who plays Australian author P.L. Travers in the recently released movie Saving Mr. Banks. Emma explains the challenges of playing a real life person and tells why the Mary Poppins creator was such an enigmatic character. The Looking Good section showcases some beautiful fashion from leading designers Akira Isogawa and Stuart Weitzman, as well as a selection of beauty products and fashion accessories that will have you looking and feeling great. In our expanded Entertainment section we take a look at what’s on offer at this year’s Bleach* Festival, investigate the growing Gold Coast film industry and highlight some of the region’s best exhibitions and events. So whether you are staying home or heading on holiday, please enjoy this latest edition of Cove.

Nothing has been invented yet that will do a better job than high heels at making a good pair of legs look great or great ones look fabulous – Stuart Weitzman And few are better acquainted with the power of stylish footwear than he. Stuart Weitzman’s lifelong fascination with shoes was perhaps inevitable – his father founded the Seymour Shoes brand in Haverhill, Massachusetts, in the 1950s, which his mother, a model, adored wearing. One particular pair fascinated the four-year-old Stuart, who couldn’t understand how the shoe didn’t collapse. And thus began his lifelong love affair with stylish shoes and his commitment to combining craftsmanship with elegance. Renowned for incorporating unorthodox materials like glass, wallpaper, jute and precious metals into his creations, Stuart is equal parts engineer and designer in that he won’t compromise on comfort or fit. “I will never put a shoe in the line that’s a compromise on fit,” he famously told Katrina Szish on CBS’s Early Show. “I will take a shoe out of the line, even if it’s gorgeous. And if it’s that gorgeous, we’ll have to figure out another way to make it, because I don’t want to lose a beautiful idea, but it isn’t going out there unless I’m pretty sure it’s right.” His dedication begins with his designs – reportedly more than 600 every year, from some 1,000 sketches – and continues through to making the patterns and supervising all aspects of manufacture to the point of sale. With an enthusiastic and loyal customer base in more than 80 countries including the United States, Italy, Monaco, the Middle East, China, Japan and Russia, Stuart Weitzman designs will soon be even more accessible to Australian customers with the rollout of six shop-in-shop boutiques within David Jones department stores. Located in Sydney, Bondi Junction, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth, all Stuart >> Weitzman stores will be operating by early 2014.

Did you know? • The first-ever Stuart Weitzman design was an elegant bridal shoe called ‘sheer delite’. • Stuart Weitzman estimates his personal design tally is over 400 styles every year. • For more than 30 years Stuart Weitzman has used the same foot model who is deemed to have the perfect ‘test’ feet for a shoe designer. She has tested every Stuart Weitzman design three times before they’re released to the market. • In 2002, Stuart Weitzman designed the ‘Million Dollar’ shoes embellished with 464 diamonds worn on the Academy Award red carpet by nominee Mullholland Drive’s Laura Elena Harring. • Stuart Weitzman created the glass slipper for the Broadway debut of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella. • Celebrity devotees of Stuart Weitzman designs include Angelina Jolie, Beyoncé, Kate Hudson and Emma Stone.

In light of the multi-billion dollar label’s ongoing success and popularity, it may come as a surprise to learn that shoe design wasn’t Stuart’s first career choice – the Wharton School of Business graduate was originally set on a career as a Wall Street stockbroker. And the shoes? They were ‘a hobby’. That hobby saw his first design, produced by Seymour Shoes when Stuart was aged in his early twenties, achieve such success that his proud father had the shoe cast in bronze. When his father passed away in 1965, Stuart and his brother Warren took over the company, moving into the niche market of bridal, evening and party shoes – which also fed his passion for elegance and style, and saw him begin to market and expand the Stuart Weitzman name. Today the Stuart Weitzman range has expanded to include handbags, accessories and even baby shoes, and he remains as passionate as ever about his designs. With his creativity enhancing every aspect of the company’s operations, Stuart has no plans to retire – ever; his rationale being that one retires from a job, but not a hobby. “I design shoes to make women happy,” he’s famously said. Wall Street’s loss has been the fashion world’s – and many happy women’s – irreplaceable gain.

Enjoy a true Thai experience while overlooking the picturesque Sanctuary Cove Marina With Akira’s collections the clothes subtly hint at the female form underneath. Garments skim over the body without being formfitting or constricting, allowing the wearer to be unashamedly unselfconscious. This season the thread of Akira’s collection reflects his ongoing philosophy of unexpected colour palettes and elaborate embellishments and Japanese knotting techniques called ‘Shibori’. Once again we are transported into magic ‘garden-scapes’ that are Kimono, making the wearer feel special and individual. One such garment is the Spiral Shibori knotted rayon Kaftan with a hand painted Shibori abstract landscape and pale blue wash, which feels as though you are wearing air. There is a simple strap a-line gown featuring bold red hand painted butterflies that cascade down as if flying through a landscape and into the sunset. My favourite is a simple and demure vermillion dress which on closer inspection is brought to life with sensational draping through handmade knots also known as spiral Shibori technique. Of this collection Akira states, “I wanted to bring the bright and subtle colours of nature into the garments and almost have the wearer feel nature itself. I want women to look and feel beautiful.” *The word ‘kimono’, literally means a ‘thing to wear’.

relax&unwind For spa enthusiasts planning their next holiday, a cruise is the way to go. words Linette Gramstad

Cruising is becoming the preferred method of travel for many holidaymakers as they get to unwind and see the world at the same time. For spa enthusiasts, cruises are especially appealing as you receive a five star experience in beautiful tranquil surroundings. Onboard spas have become extremely popular and are evolving into something even more special, with many becoming the ship’s main attraction. Once upon a time, day spas at sea were nothing but a room with limited space and a small rounded window. You would get a glance at the ocean view from what seemed to be the old laundry room … Now it’s far from that, with onboard spas taking you on the ultimate journey of luxury. The day spas are usually spacious with calming colour schemes, and treatment rooms have the most devine decor with soft lighting and sumptuous bedding. Traditionally at the start of your treatment you are given a luxurious soft gown and slippers to put on before being taken down to the dedicated waiting room where you are offered a refreshment such as herbal tea or flavoured water while listening to relaxation music. You then start to unwind until your spa therapist joins you to take you through to your treatment room for the next step of your spa experience. Make sure to ask about spa packages when making your booking. That way you can get to try a range of different treatments and decide what you might like to enjoy again. Treatment choices vary from ship to ship of course, with the most popular being massages and facials. There is usually a range of massages offered to best suit the guest’s needs. These include traditional Swedish massage for relaxation, Hot Stones for stress relief, Thai massage which focuses on stretching, Aromatherapy to soothe and relieve certain conditions and Deep Remedial for aches and pains. Some will also offer Reiki for healing and special treatments to help improve arthritis and circulation.

Other treatments offered are manicures and pedicures, invigorating full body scrubs and body wraps using fine quality salts, essential oils and sea-based ingredients such as algae and seaweed, which usually include a body massage (these are my personal favourites). Most onboard spas will offer advanced facial treatments, eye treatments and also general beauty services such as hairdressing, waxing, tinting, make-up and even eyelash extensions. These are fantastic treatments for guests who may have run out of time before starting their cruise or in preparation for a glamorous evening event on board. Many ships have additional facilities to offer after your treatment such as steam rooms and herbal saunas to detoxify the skin, hydrotherapy spa baths to relax muscle tension and mineral baths to nourish the skin. Some spas will also have a swimming pool with massaging water jets and heated rock loungers to relax on afterwards, an amazing treat to enjoy! You can spend most of the day in the spa facilities or just head down for a single treatment if you prefer. Whatever you choose, be sure to allow yourself some quality time to enjoy the beautiful surroundings. From a different perspective there are now cruise ships that offer a complete health retreat. This includes day spa cabins, healthy meals, exercise programs, yoga and health treatments as well as relaxation rooms with ocean views in a calming Zen environment. This is a truly remarkable way to spend your cruise and is great for health and fitness enthusiasts and for those who want a relaxing and rejuvenating holiday experience. Whatever your preference, look at pre-booking your spa treatments before you begin your journey or make a reservation as soon as you can once on board in order to avoid disappointment. Be sure you check your options to see which treatments suit you best so you can enjoy a relaxing time at sea … happy cruising!

AN ECLECTIC MIX OF DESIGN AND ART. STYLE AND LUXURY, WITH A TOUCH OF QUIRK. Hoteliers have long since prided themselves on the fact that you can walk into any hotel within a particular chain and instantly recognise where you are. In fact, the hotels often look identical – no matter what their geographical location. These days however, luxury travel trends are surely changing? The best thing about travel has to be escaping your usual surrounds. Soaking up a new and exciting destination, exploring the unknown, the surprise and delights of new encounters, new sights, smells and tastes. Too often the first thing guests do when they check into a hotel is… leave. They walk straight back out the front door to explore their vibrant new surrounds. What if there was a hotel which brought its vibrant destination into the hotel? One hotel chain who is shaking things up is Australian owned, QT Hotels and Resorts. Officially unveiling in 2011, QT Hotels and Resorts offer a series of unique designer resorts that celebrate an eclectic design environment and bold entertainment experiences that truly bring the uniqueness of their destinations indoors. The QT Resort experience begins as soon as guests arrive with a concierge and hostess greeting them in quirky, retro outfits. Service is always attentive, combining an upbeat American vibe teamed with a touch of Aussie flavour. From the colourful open plan lobbies, playful uniforms, flamboyant décor and unique in-room amenities (at QT Gold Coast guests can enjoy thongs rather than slippers), QT Hotels and Resorts are bringing the fun back to five star. QT Port Douglas was the second resort to open for QT Hotels & Resorts. The chic resort is Mad Men meets the Hamptons with a sophisticated, upmarket vibe featuring light timber floor coverings and a restrained colour palette of muted pastels. An oasis of relaxation, there is no need for guests to leave the resort with a large lagoon-style pool and lawn party atmosphere, featuring pretty sun loungers and swim up bars. For the ultimate place to relax al fresco day and night, Estilo offers guests exquisite cocktails that can be enjoyed on the lawn or by the pool while listening to vibey lounge music.

SPECIAL OFFER Enjoy a two nights escape to either QT Gold Coast or QT Port Douglas from $240 per night. The Two Night Stand package includes: • Designer accommodation • Daily breakfast for two adults • One dinner for two at the famed Bazaar Marketplace.

Discover more at qthotels.com.au

Those looking for a quieter evening can take a spot at the 300 seat outdoor resort cinema in partnership with Moonlight Cinemas. For guests who can be enticed away from the ultimate design haven, the natural wonders of one of Australia’s best coastal resort towns are on the doorstep, including the World Heritage Listed Great Barrier Reef and Daintree Rainforest. In contrast, QT Gold Coast offers a contemporary living space that is a mixture of nostalgic surfer chic meets Miami Swim catwalk. Custom furniture, graphica and pops of bold colour are some of the unmissable highlights of the design inspired by the 1950’s and 60’s with Eames-era chairs, artist crafted feature walls and photographic ceiling mosaics of the Gold Coast through the ages. Stingray Lounge is where the party starts on the Gold Coast with resident DJs playing late into the night, an extensive cocktail menu replete with 50 in-house tequilas and Southern Californian cuisine. After a night on the town, guests can relax by the large outdoor pool on one of the colourful sunbeds or step into spaQ for an unsurpassable custom spa experience featuring a sleek wet zone, with unisex hammam and ice fountain. and 400 bird species, Zambia’s South Luangwa National Park is definitely in Africa’s Top 5 game regions. Zambia is a destination for travellers wanting to experience the ‘real bush’ away from the crowds but still having the opportunity for amazing game viewing. As the season to visit Zambia’s national parks is relatively short (May to October), the number of visitors is also reduced compared to other countries, making for an intimate game experience. There is a good choice of 5-star lodges and luxury tented camps as well as different styles of walking safaris. Some camps will combine vehicle game drives with walking safaris allowing guests to venture into new territories each day, whilst others offer the ability to walk from camp to camp. To fully appreciate Zambia’s South Luangwa region a minimum of five nights is recommended. Richard does make the point that getting there takes some time, so clients need to let go of the modern hustle and bustle and simply learn how to relax again. As Richard says ‘In the West you have watches, in Africa we have time’ – and the African bush is a great way to reconnect with nature and with your travelling companions. These experiences are both enriching and life changing.

ambia is known as the premier destination for true authentic walking safaris. The country’s national parks, like South Luangwa and Kafue, are pristine wilderness areas that have remained remote and uncrowded. Richard Ruskin, Managing Director of African Travel Specialists, has guided many groups and clients to Africa, including Zambia, throughout his 30-year love affair with the region. “Zambia is one of my most favourite destinations as it provides a close connection to the bush, the animals and the people,” Richard said. Richard, as a walking guide, describes approaching a lion or elephant on foot as one of the most exciting moments one can have, however, safety is his number one consideration for clients and animals alike. “We always keep a safe distance so as not to pressure the animals, and clients are always escorted by highly trained walking guides who have exceptional knowledge on animal behaviour as well as an understanding of the area. Besides seeing larger animals, a walking safari opens up a new world normally missed by vehicle safaris. There is a fascinating array of insects, birds, flowers and flora that adds a unique depth to any safari. With over 60 different animal species

tauck – europe 2014 Access the extraordinary. It’s what Tauck does best.

I

t’s easy to see the sights in Europe. To stand in long lines, push through the crowds and generally have the same standard-issue European holiday as everyone else. But that’s not good enough for Tauck and it’s not good enough for you. You need to feel like a local when you travel in Europe which is why you won’t see Tauck guests wearing badges or waiting in line for massproduced experiences. Tauck believes how you see the world matters so you’ll find yourself venturing off the beaten highways to discover a real taste of daily life. That’s where you’ll meet the locals and experience those authentic cultural treats that crowds of tourists don’t know about … like playing petanque with the village champions in the little French riverfront town of Viviers, dining with a principessa in her private palazzo in Sicily, listening to a Romani musician play Gypsy tunes for you inside his own Budapest apartment, chatting with a former Kremlin insider about Russian history or countless other memorable moments when the locals welcome you into their homes to make connections you wouldn’t have access to if not for Tauck.

Florence

You’ll find extraordinary opportunities to go local on every itinerary Tauck offers. You’ll meet Spanish equestrians, French cowboys, Russian politicians, Irish step dancers, Scottish bagpipers, Whirling Dervishes, Hungarian gypsies … Plus you will have behind the scenes access and priority entrances to museums and historic sites. Tauck doesn’t just take you on a guided tour of these noble places, Tauck invites you to come inside after-hours for a private performance and dinner in a Viennese palace, a hunting hound demonstration, a classic Mozart concert, wine and olive oil tastings in privately owned vineyards, market walks, cooking demos and hands-on classes with chefs, bakers and candy makers. Live the experience. Love the moment. And have the time of your life. Join Tauck in Europe and expect to see the sights a bit differently than you would with anyone else. Italy, the Mediterranean, Northern Europe, Great Britain, Ireland, Central Europe, France and Spain plus river and small ship cruising. All inclusive. No extra costs. No surprises. No options sold.

Window or aisle seat? Window! I don’t think the aisle seat is even an option. Watching the view and seeing the landscape transformed is one of the best things about flying. Who would you most like to sit next to on a long flight? My twinnie. We both tend to get hangry (hungry, and angry because of it) and that, combined with a lack of sleep, makes for two cranky sisters towards the end of long flights. I wouldn’t want to subject any unsuspecting passengers to that! What is your favourite piece of technology? On a flight? The neck pillow! That counts, right? Don’t know how anyone survives without it. What has been your best/favourite overseas purchase? A gorgeous handcrafted pearl vase I bought for my parents from the Old Markets in Jerusalem. The unusual stuff is always the best. Share your best/strangest travel story: It would have to be Tahiti, being sent by Nine News to report on the Teahupoo leg of the ASP Surfing World Tour last year. Floating in a boat next to those famous waves and interviewing the likes of Kelly Slater and our own Parko and Mick Fanning was just incredible.

the traveller Carrie-Anne Greenbank Nine News Reporter based on the Gold Coast. Which city/country is your most travelled to destination? My theory is that the world is such a massive place, there’s always more to see. So despite travelling through more than 20 countries, I’m yet to visit the same place twice. It’s great fun.

What do you recommend as a ‘must-see’ destination? Switzerland. The little township of Frutigen that I visited was straight from a fairy tale – wood cabin, sunflowers, rolling green hills against jagged blue mountains. Words can’t do it justice really. What is the most interesting/exotic dish you have tasted? Hmm. I know this sounds weird, but eating goat in Mozambique. I was there with an aid agency from the Gold Coast, and we were staying with villagers in mud huts in virtually the middle of nowhere. The goat tasted awful – they cooked up the innards and everything. But I loved it because for the locals, goat’s a delicacy. And they offered us the best of it before having any themselves. It was really humbling. What has been your best overseas dining experience? An un-assuming $7 bowl of mushroom soup in Estonia. That bowl was more like a pot, and the soup was ridiculous. I wasn’t even hungry and finished off the whole thing in record time. What is your favourite iconic landmark? The Dead Sea. Nothing better than covering yourself head to toe in mineral-laden mud and floating the day away.

Is there a particular place on your ‘bucket list’? South America. That place is fascinating. I’d take my twin sister, Amy. We were actually planning a trip there last year, but she got concerned it might be too dangerous ... so we went to the Middle East instead. (Not sure about the logic of that one.)

What is the best thing about travelling? My grandma always tells me that when you get old, it won’t be your career or finances you think about, but your memories of places visited, friends and families. So I tend to take a lot of photos whenever I travel – hard copy memories!

If you could travel in luxury to anywhere in the world, where would you go? I’d take a cruise ship to Antarctica. All the luxury of the liner with the backdrop of stunning icy scenery. Feeling a bit inspired by our local adventurer Geoff Wilson.

What do you always do before you go? Leave everything to the last minute then get myself into a mad panic trying to make it to the airport in time. And generally find I’ve forgotten something basic. Like a toothbrush. Or undies. Not good.

What is your most essential travel item? I’d say a universal adapter, hands down. Two, to be safe. Nothing worse than your phone dying right when you need it. Do you have any tips for avoiding jetlag? Drink water, and plenty of it. Apart from that, I tend to just let myself sleep as much as I need before the old body clock kicks back in.

Car, coach, plane or ship? Ship. I’ve only been on a few so the thought of it is still exciting. Where to next? I’m thinking the Inca trail to Machu Picchu would be a good start.

Italy on two wheels

Avid cyclists are seeing the world at their own pace, one breathtaking European destination at a time. The Tour de France, the Giro d’Italia and other similar events are followed worldwide by millions of people each year. Those that cycle watch with extreme interest and long to test themselves on the same courses as the professionals. One group of Gold Coast cyclists decided to do just this, travelling to Italy to take on a series of challenging but rewarding cycling routes. Staying in family-owned hotels along the way, Bucky, Doc, Blocker, Peter and GD met many like-minded riders from around the world and enjoyed an amazing two-wheeled adventure. Bucky kept a diary of the group’s 14 days in the Italian mountains … here are some of the highlights …

Lake Misurina

Day One First stop … the Italian Alps. We arrived at Hotel Genzianella in Bormio at 3pm. Wow, what a great hotel run by the Andreola family. Beautiful timber clad rooms. A bar, restaurant with a five-course dinner and a bike room from Heaven. It was fully equipped with tools, pumps and racks as well as a free bike clothing laundry. We went for an hour-long ride just up a local hill at 4.30pm and Peter was so gobsmacked we had six Kodak moments [camera stops] in 2.5 km. Day Two We set off for Passo Di Stelvio at 2760 metres from Bormio at 1200 metres. It was a 22 km climb – daunting to say the least. It was sunny but cool. We had numerous Kodak moments, four in three hours, and we made it! There were high roadside snowdrifts for the last 5 km. It was an absolutely awesome ride at max 13%, average 7.3%. Took photos at a café with an open fire. The descent was spectacular. We went back to the hotel to shower and change and then we were off to Bormio Terme – Thermal pools, Turkish bath and swimming pool. Day Three Headed for Mortirolo at 9am. Got to the bottom at 10am. It was a 14 km climb up. Average 8.3%, at 1852 metres. There were two short sections at 16% the rest was a max of 12/13% and we made it in just over two hours. We summitted with only one other rider before riders with Discovery Tours started arriving. The clouds were building so we decided to descend immediately. We returned to the hotel at 6.35pm. Total ride of 110 km. Top day. Day Four We called this a rest day but still rode Bormio 2000 metres. Distance 10 km, height 1929 metres. Blocker had to visit the bike shop to tune his gears so we rode at 10.30am. Short 7 km flat warm up then started the official climb, one slope of max 12% with an average 7.2%. Total ride time was one hour and 15 minutes. The Belgians we have become friendly with went up and over Mortirolo and back again – awesome. 150 km – six hours riding – strong men. Nice Dutch couple on the next table at dinner who ride and hike. They gave us news at 10pm that Gavia was open for the first time this week, which means we can do it tomorrow. >>

64

Day Five Set out for Passo Gavia, 26 km, 2622 metres, average 6.5%, max 14%. Again clear skies and sunny. Morning temperature was eight degrees. Again, awesome is an inadequate adjective. Snow started 5 km from the summit. At one stage we had to go under a road-closed barrier as the other side of the mountain was closed. Our road had been cleared and was mostly dry. Spectacular 25 km descent. Wow what a ride. It was possibly better than Stelvio. Day Six Left at 9am. Again, stunning alpine scenery. Climbed 16 km to Passo Del Foscagno which then dropped down to 2000 metres then climbed to Passo Eira 2208 metres then dropped down to Livigno. We had lunch at the first café – brillo. Then of course we had to ride back. A challenging ride but it was worth the effort. Final descent from Foscagno was spectacular. Returned to have coffee in the bar and then bagged up bikes ready to leave in the morning to drive to the Dolomites. Day Seven The route took us over Stelvio. I drove. Hairy trip up and down. Stopped at the top and it was actually snowing. We had hot chocolate in a café. Doccy stayed in the car as he wasn’t dressed for the cold. The drive down was cloudy and misty and heaps of motorbikes, mostly going up. Doccy and I shared driving. We had a good lunch at Autostrada service area. Arrived Cortina d’Ampezzo – Sport Barisetti Hotel at approx 3pm. Met GD who had come down from Munich. Assembled the bikes and had a couple of beers in a classic alpine bar. Our hosts were Maximus (Max) and Elise whose family started the hotel in 1960. Had a good dinner and a short walk in the rain and in bed by 10pm.

Blocker, Peter, Bucky & Doc

Day Eight Woke up to low clouds and mist and decided it was too inclement so went exploring in town. Spent some time in a large department store. We had lunch on returning to Cortina and Max organised a mountain bike for GD. The remaining fab four then drove to do a recce. Passo Tre Croci and Tre Cime di Lavredo. Only 22 km ride from town, hence 44 km out and back. We will attempt it tomorrow if the weather is good. Day Nine Had the usual good breaky and set off at 8.30am. This was a very hard ride. The first pass through Tre Croci was not too bad. Doc, Pete and I waited for half an hour at Misurina, a beautiful lake, for Blocker who had taken a wrong turn and did an extra 4.5 km. Turn was well signed so this was a real dickhead act. Top few kilometres worked us all but we made it to Rifugnio Aurouzo. It was cold and windy, with plenty of people at the top as it is such a great walking area. We had a half hour R & R with hot chocolate and then descended as the weather was turning. Small amount of rain for a kilometre or so but soon got into sun, one hour downhill (just a 3 km climb to the Croci). Then had lunch and large beers at the first restaurant as we entered Cortina. After lunch Pete and Doc took a different route to the hotel and Pete had a minor bingle with a car. He had some minor cuts which GD fixed up. Day Ten Pete’s back was crook from his crash so he grabbed a hotel mountain bike and went for a valley ride with GD. We set off at 9am for Passo Falzarego 2117 metres, then Passo Valparona 2192 metres. Total ride was 36 km. It seemed to be a solid 7% most of the time with no sharp jackups. Snow at 2000 metres, and absolutely picturesque scenery. Had hot chocolates that you could stand a spoon in at the top. Sunny but strong cold wind. There were plenty of tourist buses and motor bikes at the top. It was a very safe descent. We stopped at WWI War Memorial. Stunning tower building, beautifully built. Rode into town for lunch in central piazza. We went out for dinner. Doccy had a disaster with an undercooked steak and crunchy custard but with a complimentary bottle of desert wine, all ended well. >>

Day Eleven We drove all five bikes to Arabba 36km. Then climbed Passo Pordoi 2239 metres and Passo Sella 2214 metres. Total ride 46 km. Got away from the Hotel Barrisetti at 8.30am. Beautiful drive via Passo Falzarego parked at Arabba and started riding at 10.20am. 10 km to Pordoi. Summited Pordoi. Had a hot chocolate and apple strudel and met two Australian cycle tourists from Melbourne. It was then 12 km to Sella, 6 km down and 6 km up. No problems. Absolutely stunning at the top. Seems to be a big tourist coach route and of course the normal dozens of motorbikes. Had drinks sitting in the sun and then returned down. Blocker and I had a bit of a dig going up the backside of Pordoi – good fun. Didn’t wait for Pete and Doc to descend. Got to Arabba, I was leading and went straight past the van. At 2 km we realised and rode back. So I got the ‘dickhead of the day’ prize and had to buy the beers in the hotel bar. Day Twelve The ride was out and back to Passo Giau, 2231 metres. Total ride 38 km. Not a difficult ride and the usual spectacular views with a bit of cloud in the distance. Met lovely Dutch couple with beautiful baby whose name translated to Blackbird which they decided on after they went to a Paul McCartney concert when the wife was pregnant and he sang Blackbird accapella right in front of them. Had lunch in town and then went inside the town church, which was very ornate and impressive. Went for a pre-dinner walk up by the 1956 Olympic bobsleigh run. Had the usual plentiful dinner followed by pool and table soccer in the games room.

Day Thirteen Left at 8.30am and climbed out of Cortina. Valley ride to Dobbiacco. Doubled back with strong tail wind, steady climb to Misurina. Coffee by the beautiful lake, then a not too difficult climb to Tre Croci and descent to Cortina for lunch at ‘Emilio the Albanian’s’ café. Rain started as we sat down to lunch and finished as we did. We then returned to the hotel to find that GD had a crash having descended steeply after cable car ride. Minor cuts and some rib pain. We all walked into town at 5pm and had beers at Café Royal. On the walk back had beers at roadside mini golf – a different experience. Back at the hotel we asked Max to see his Ferrari. He said he had three so we went to the basement of the house – wow! Two red and one yellow Ferrari and a 1953 British racing green Lotus which he fired up. He then fired up the yellow Ferrari. Surrounded by racing paraphernalia, prizes, photos, magazines, etc. Photos of Max and Elise raceway prizes from historic car races at places like Monza. Then we went down another level – more stuff! Four Ferrari race car seats facing a big screen for race movies. Absolutely mind blowing. Final dinner, coffee and Montenegro liqueur, walk and bed. Day Fourteen Van packed by 8.30am. Farewells to Max, Elise and Plik the dog then we were on the road to Sestri Levante – 500 km. Autostrada all the way. The Italian Riviera The bikes stayed packed and we spent our last few days in Italy walking the trails of Cinque Terre. Evenings were spent watching the glorious sunsets from beachfront cafés and sharing tall tales and ripping yarns.

The Sanctuary Cove IGA Village Market is the perfect spot to pick up something special. Located at the entrance to The Marine Village, the Sanctuary Cove IGA Village Market is now open, complete with a dedicated buggy parking bay. Featuring everything you need for your weekly shop, the store also carries an array of local specialty products you may not find in your usual supermarket. The boutique style supermarket stocks specialties such as Tenterfield steak and Bangalow pork, sourced direct from the green fields of New South Wales, along with Maleny Milk products sourced from Queensland’s Sunshine Coast. If you need a caffeine boost before you tackle the aisles, IGA Village Market also sells ready-to-go coffees made from beans supplied by World Barista Championship winner Paul Bassett. Mulpha Sanctuary Cove Executive General Manager Keith Allardice said the market had been trading well since its opening late last year. “Residents, business operators and visitors have been keen to check out what is a long awaited addition to The Marine Village retail mix and have been pleasantly surprised by the choice of different products that are available,” he said. “IGA Village Market provides a level of convenience and an array of groceries and fresh food never seen before in the precinct.”

“There’s a lot of extra products and beautiful local produce in store that you won’t readily find anywhere else.” – KEIT H A L L ARDI C E Alongside its specialty products, the supermarket sells a wide range of standard grocery lines, as well as baked goods, deli products, meat and fresh produce in a boutique-style format. Keith said the deli selection included a wide range of high end artisan-style produce including fine chutneys, olive oils and condiments, a feature that gives the Village Market store a very sophisticated edge. “It has everything you could want or need but it’s not just your every day grocery store,” said Keith. “There’s a lot of extra products and beautiful local produce in store that you won’t readily find anywhere else.” Keith said the presence of the IGA Village Market was also proving to be a drawcard for boaties and day trippers using Sanctuary Cove’s 300-berth marina. “Boaties can now restock their galleys and pick up much more than the bare essentials when they call in or before they set off,” he said. “It adds another dimension to their Marine Village retail and dining experience, which already involves quality dining and boutique shopping.” The Sanctuary Cove IGA Village Market is open from 6am to 8pm, seven days a week.

thai dining Thai House returns to Sanctuary Cove. Lovers of Thai cuisine will be happy to hear the Thai House restaurant has returned to the Sanctuary Cove Marine Village adding to the array of dining options on offer. The Thai House has re-opened just metres from its original premises which was unfortunately destroyed by fire in early 2013. Restaurateurs Pat and Nicholas Tansacha were delighted to celebrate the re-opening of their waterfront restaurant, welcoming back a number of their regulars. Pat said they were looking forward to rebuilding the momentum they had when the restaurant initially opened over 12 months ago. “We were only open for a short while last time, but we had built up a loyal following among the Sanctuary Cove locals and we hope to do this again,” she said. Mulpha Sanctuary Cove General Manager of Sales John Hughes said the reopening of the Thai House had come at an exciting time for the dining precinct at Sanctuary Cove. “Having the Thai House back on board gives locals and visitors the opportunity to experience authentic Thai cuisine and also adds to the dining options on offer,” John said. “An entirely new dining precinct is also under construction on the waterfront so there is a lot happening in The Marine Village which we are quite excited about. “The Marine Village offers a truly unique dining experience and we are pleased to see the Thai House is open again.”

Thai House Sanctuary Cove joins a wide array of dining choices at Sanctuary Cove including George’s Paragon Seafood Restaurant, Jonez on Food, Dragon Cove Chinese Cuisine, io esco, Raw Kitchen and Espresso, Black Angus Bar & Grill, Leo’s Latino Bar and Grill, Sushi Island, Café Nineteen, Cove Tavern and Quay Street Café. The new waterfront dining precinct currently under construction will add 600sqm of dining tenancies to The Marine Village. A current leasing campaign is fielding expressions of interest from international cuisines including Japanese teppanyaki, Chocolate Café, Indian, Mediterranean and Spanish tapas style operators. The new tenancies will have spectacular views across the Sanctuary Cove Marina and the surrounding harbour and are expected to be completed ahead of the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show in May.

SEPTEMBER 2014

It is here in the heart of Europe that powerful world empires gave rise to immense prosperity and the expression of boundless creativity. Lisbon’s Tower of Belém was a beacon for early explorers upon their return journeys from the New World. The opulent palaces, theatres and cathedrals of Bordeaux have earned it the distinction of being a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The history of the mighty British Empire is embodied in London’s regal traditions, while Pont-Aven’s colony of painters, led by Paul Gauguin, redefined a generation of artists. The mid-sized ships of Oceania Cruises perfectly blend elegance and luxury with exceptional intimacy and warmth, providing you with the European experience of a lifetime. 38 SAILINGS MAR

Just a few kilometres south of the town of Clare and a stone’s throw from the main road is the winery that time forgot. Those few folk lucky enough to visit its centuryold stone buildings will find things done a little differently – nothing hurried, painstaking care metered out for the simplest tasks, a landline and the mailman the sole conduits to the outside world (no fax, no email, no website), some of the oldest vines in the country and wines in no hurry to be drunk. A.P. Birks Wendouree works by its own rules. By doing so it has become an Australian icon. Its shiraz – according to Langton’s (Australia’s only credible classification) – is in the ‘Exceptional’ category alongside a stellar cast including Penfold’s Grange, Torbreck Run Rig, Cullen Diana Madeline, Henschke Hill of Grace, Moss Wood Cabernet, Rockford Shiraz and Leeuwin Estate Art Series Chardonnay. And yet it’s not a household name like its peers in the classification; more a cult figure amongst the geekiest of wine nerds. Why? Perhaps because of its tiny production and reluctance to move through the usual marketing channels. If you want to buy Wendouree wines you need to wait your turn for a spot on the mailing list and then take up what is usually a fairly sparse allocation. There’s no cellar door, no wholesale or retail, no picking up a bottle at the local Dan’s. I wait impatiently, like some sort of yearbetween-fixes junkie, for the letter in the mail that allows me my half-dozen shiraz and whatever of the other wines are available. I return my wish list in the mail and wait … I’m not sure that the shiraz is always Wendouree’s best wine. It makes a shiraz mataro blend, shiraz malbec, cabernet sauvignon, cabernet malbec and a sweet white in a sort of ‘vin doux naturel’ style

In their youth they are tightly wound, shy and even a little pretty; only their structure and ferrous tannins give inkling of what is to come. Then, after a decade and a bit something happens. The wines reach a tipping point, building layers, complexity, weight; the fruit replaced by undergrowth, earth and the whiff of an antiques store. It’s extraordinary. Wendouree reds are treasures; singular, iconic and very, very Australian. And part of their appeal lies in the effort needed to see them to fruition – finding them (good luck), hoarding them and giving them the most

... chances are that Peter has visited their region of origin and can wax lyrically on the terroir, wine making techniques, regional peculiarities of the grape and personalities in the area he calls friends.

From caddying to chardonnay, from Massachusetts to the Mornington Peninsula … it’s been an interesting journey for wine merchant Peter Bessey. words Paul Prendergast Photography Mark Wilson

Born in Boston, raised in Fiji and California, schooled on the fairways, wine bars and wine regions of Europe, settled on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria, Australia. The story of Peter Bessey, ‘Homme d’Affairs’ at Fine Wine Merchant – the boutique wine shop he owns with partner Stewart Plant in Mt Eliza – and business manager for Ogilvy Clayton Golf Design, is an interesting depiction of how life can provide great opportunity and diversity if you’re prepared to chase it. From a long line of descendants of Anthony Bessey, who migrated to Massachusetts in 1634 and was a farmer by occupation, Peter considers he may be ‘the first Bessey to ever leave Boston’ in 16 generations, although as you peel back the layers of his rich life story, you discover his brother, coincidentally, also lives in Australia. “My brother was in the computer business in the early days in L.A. and his company asked him to move out to Australia for a year in the 80s to help establish down here,” Peter explains. “He wasn’t all that keen but he came down for a year and ended up at Manly in Sydney, about a block from the beach. He quickly realised this was pretty good and never left.” So how did a boy from Boston end up getting involved in golf and wine and setting down roots on the other side of the planet on the Mornington Peninsula? “I was a geeky kid in high school and college,” Peter explains. “Instead of

81

turning up at a frat party with a warm six-pack of Budweiser, I’d turn up with a California chardonnay which didn’t go down all that well with the frat brothers. But I quickly made friends with a few like-minded people and we spent a lot of our parents’ money buying champagne and pinot noir. “When I graduated from college, my father shouted me a trip to Champagne in France and then whenever I caddied in Europe, I’d try to drink in wine bars and try local stuff while all the other caddies headed to the nearest Irish pub. (How Bessey got into golf and caddying is a whole other story but consistent with the colourful nature of his life to date, his first caddy gig was with none other than South African Ernie Els and his second was with five-time major champion Nick Faldo!) “I met a young lady named Veronica in Prague when I was caddying on the European Tour in the early 90s,” Peter continues. “I went back to caddying then arranged a bag in Australia at the end of that year and met up with Veronica in Melbourne, where she was born and raised. “I returned to Europe after that, then went back to the States but we kept communicating and eventually I moved here permanently in 1995. We were married in 1997. “When I moved to Australia, I quickly realised I couldn’t make a lot of money caddying so I figured, let’s see if I can do something in wine because it was always a hobby and a passion.

“Anyway, I saw an ad for a cellar door manager at Red Hill Estate on the Mornington Peninsula, borrowed a car and drove down there from Melbourne that day to taste the wines.

when Mike had dispatched it towards the scorer’s tent from the 18th green. “I tried unsuccessfully to give it back to him on two occasions but was told, in no uncertain terms, that he never wanted to see that putter again!” Peter laughs.

“I met the owner, the late Sir Peter Durham, the following Monday. He told

but he asked me to take a walk in the garden for 15 minutes before offering me the job. I started the next week.” After about 12 months, Peter was headhunted and asked by veteran winemaker Ian Holm to ‘follow him around’ to learn the trade, with a view to one day taking over the business. “I got some runs on the board there and I’ve never looked back in the wine

Fine Wine Merchant is located in Mt Eliza for one reason only – ‘because this is where we live’ – but in a little over 12 months, healthy foot traffic, web and mail order patronage are ensuring their ‘hobby’ is paying its way. “We have over 1200 wines in the shop, about half are from Australia or New Zealand and the rest from around the world. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg of what’s out there.”

We became friends and our wives became friends.” Peter recalls his first meeting with Clayton at a tournament in Portugal; actually it was Clayton’s putter he met first as it had landed near Bessey’s feet

Peter Bessey has clearly listened carefully in his time, and taken full advantage of the rest of his senses, as he cast his shadow in most corners of the globe. And his interesting life in golf and wine doesn’t show any sign of slowing or becoming any more mundane in the future. “It hasn’t been dull so far,” he insists.

at your leisure Nestled in the picturesque Malaysian hillside, Leisure Farm Resort offers residents an idyllic way of life.

85

“With the hills and vegetation Leisure Farm doesn’t feel like Malaysia it feels more like England.” – RO B ERT MAREK

Leisure Farm Resort … the name alone conjures up images of fresh air, wide open spaces and relaxed living. With 1,765 acres of rolling meadows, extensive landscaped gardens, and a state-ofthe-art equestrian centre, this luxury residential development features seven themed precincts in a natural resort setting. The project, located in the heart of Nusajaya, Iskandar Malaysia, has seven house and land precincts. Current launches include Bayou Creek Phase 7B that consists of 40 semi-detached dwellings and 17 bungalows. The world-class Balé Equestrian & Country Club is a focal point of the precinct and offers residents access to a 72-stable riding facility as well as a 20 acre multi-purpose field spread out before an impressive Grandstand. There are also plans to create a commercial centre including a hotel, village with restaurants and shops and a business park. >>

86

According to Robert Marek, Leisure Farm’s General Manager Residence & Resort, there are many synergies between Sanctuary Cove and Leisure Farm … both are luxurious master-planned communities, both offer round-the-clock-security and both boast two Championship golf courses. However, where Sanctuary Cove is based around its waterfront location and marine lifestyle, Leisure Farm – as the name suggests – offers a much more natural landscape. “With the hills and vegetation Leisure Farm doesn’t feel like Malaysia it feels more like England,” Robert says. “That’s the beauty of the place, the nature, the birdlife, it’s a really beautiful setting.” Having spent several years living and working in the bustling city of Hong Kong, Robert and his wife Melinda are also relishing the more relaxed way of life. “Leisure Farm has many natural amenities including a two kilometre linear park, waterways with running stream, a fishing pond and a 20 acre orchard with different fruits and vegetables. Coming from a city it is so nice to see things like passionfruit and tomatoes growing on the vines. “It is so different … you really appreciate being close to nature and being able to just breathe.” “I was so excited when Robert took me to the farm and I saw dragonflies,” Melinda adds. “I thought ‘wow I haven’t seen them for a long, long time’.” In addition to its natural beauty, Leisure Farm is just a 20-25 minute commute to Johor CBD and 30 minutes from the Singapore CBD, providing residents with a real alternative to city living.

87

“This proximity to the major centres along with the wonderful amenities is attracting many buyers to the resort,” says Robert. “Leisure Farm offers luxurious low-density homes and villas on house and land precincts so instead of having an apartment, you can live in a spacious house with a garden, surrounded by nature. “Property prices have almost doubled in value in recent years but one can still invest in a bungalow for AUD$1.5 million,” he explains. “When you buy a property of this value it is important that it is secure so we also have the benefit of 24-hour security, as well as cameras, and motion sensors, making it very safe for all the residents.” In fact, Leisure Farm is a double-gated community, with a fully fenced perimeter and security points on each enclave. The highly trained security team, consisting mainly of Gurkhas, live on the premises providing peace of mind at all times. Another plus for families is the resort’s location adjacent to EduCity, Malaysia’s regional educational hub which includes faculties such as Marlborough College, Raffles American School and the University of Reading Malaysia. “At the moment we have LEGOLAND Malaysia as well as Hello Kitty Town here and there are plans for another theme park in the future,” Robert says. “Pinewood Studios has also just opened up and are already starting to shoot films in Malaysia.” Robert has worked in the hospitality industry for 20 years, and says being at the helm of Leisure Farm is very similar to running a large hotel. “You have to look at what will work, what you want to build, what services you need and how to service the community, and you have to be able to deal with people because that’s what we do on a daily basis. “Our residents are our guests so my role is to make sure they are happy and to bring it all together.” But ultimately, it is Leisure Farm’s stunning natural environment that makes it such a special place to live. “Coming from a very hectic city that never sleeps to live at Leisure Farm is such a difference, you have to experience it to really appreciate it,” Robert concludes.

land for sale Sanctuary Cove’s latest land release attracts local buyers.

As the Gold Coast property market heats up, local buyers have embraced the latest release of large dry lots at Sanctuary Cove, leaving just one parcel remaining for sale. In what was the first new land release at Sanctuary Cove for three years, three of the 1000sqm parcels were purchased within just weeks of release, with another pre-sold to a Gold Coast-based buyer ahead of the release hitting the market. The largest lots ever offered in the elevated precinct of Alpinia, the blocks give families or couples the opportunity to build a substantial home and still have space for a sizeable backyard. Mulpha Sanctuary Cove General Manager of Sales John Hughes said the enthusiastic response to the release demonstrated the strong demand for land in Sanctuary Cove. “As soon as this collection was released, buyers pounced,” he said. “We have seen the market turn around strongly in the past few months with expected continued improvement in the year ahead.” John said a general upswing in sales and interest in Sanctuary Cove had prompted the release of the Alpinia lots. “It is extremely rare to offer lots of 1000sqm in such a prestigious and iconic location,” he said.

“Our aim was to provide prospective buyers with yet another residential offering to consider at Sanctuary Cove in addition to our golf course and water frontage lots.” The hillside Alpinia precinct has panoramic views across Sanctuary Cove’s water and parkland areas and beyond to the coastline and hinterland. Sanctuary Cove’s residential land precincts currently available include the elevated Alpinia and absolute golf-course fronting Banksia. Residents enjoy the convenience and peace of mind of 24-hour, on-site security in a fully gated community with resort-style amenities. All residents have access to the Sanctuary Cove Golf and Country Club with full fitness centre, tennis courts and 25m lap pool, along with use of the five-star InterContinental Sanctuary Cove Resort’s lagoon swimming pool, bars and restaurants.

heart & soul

Soul, one of the world’s most exclusive developments, heads Queensland’s luxurious apartment market.

The Gold Coast’s prestige apartment market is currently experiencing a sales surge. At the forefront of this is the iconic 77-storey tower, Soul. Rising up magnificently in the centre of the Surfers Paradise foreshore, it is rare to find a residential development of this calibre, even by international standards. Spectacular in its grandeur, exquisite in its fine detail, to enter Soul is to enter a world of refined opulence, off-set by the relaxed beach atmosphere. Its vast entry contains a porte-cochère and sumptuously relaxing lounges that lead to the majestic lobby with soaring nine metre ceilings, creating a sublime first impression. Apartment floorplans produce a beautiful flow between indoor and outdoor spaces, and optimise the views. Purchasers can select from the Beach, Beach House, Sky and Sub Penthouse Collections, featuring homes from generous two bedrooms to immense two-storey, three and four bedroom properties. The most tasteful of colour palates and exclusive fittings grace these spacious apartments, adorning them with an air of affluent distinction while maximising comfort. Each residence has exceptional views out to the horizon and extending north and south along the idyllic stretch of pale golden sand. The higher you go in this 77-level icon, the more expansive the views – north to Stradbroke Island and south toward Coolangatta, Byron Bay and the tropical rainforest hinterlands. These panoramas, breathtaking by day and night, create an extraordinary sense of space. When not using the property, owners have the option of placing their residence under in-house management, and with their immaculate standards and highly professional services, purchasers can rest assured their home is in excellent care while receiving a return on investment. Soul’s outstanding resort facilities offer a world-class array of leisure options for residents. The swimming podium virtually hovers above the beach, with sumptuous sun lounges and the clear waters of the 25m tiered outdoor heated pool, children’s pool and spa leading towards an oasis of greenery, tropical gardens and the barbecue area. The 25m heated indoor pool is serene and inviting in all seasons, and the spa, sauna and steam rooms provide for tranquil relaxation. The superbly equipped, dual room gymnasium provides state of the art cardiovascular and weight training machines, calibrated for all levels of fitness. There are also outdoor exercise facilities available. The reception level offers well appointed meeting and conference areas and Seaduction, Soul’s ultra-sophisticated two-hatted restaurant, wine-tasting room and bar. Soul’s retail precinct, running along The Esplanade and Cavill Avenue, offers a wide selection of places to shop and eat, from innovative casual dining to more up-market culinary experiences. In the vibrant surrounding streets, residents have an eclectic collection of shops literally at their doorstep. Soul has created an exceptional level of interest from smart purchasers throughout Australia and internationally who see it as a golden opportunity to buy at the lower-end of the cycle. In recent months there were an extraordinary number of sales in Soul, all at over $1 million. During 2013, this equated to a million dollar plus sale almost every week, making Soul the most sought-after elite residential development in Queensland, if not Australia. A development of this calibre is unlikely ever to be repeated in such a prime international location.

the next generation Introducing the Ghibli – Maserati’s new, luxury mid-size sedan. words CHRIS NIXON

97

Maserati, once one of Italy’s most esteemed independent sports car makers, is rising to even greater popularity as it develops a broader range of vehicles under its ownership by the giant FIAT group. The make’s turnaround started with the launch of the fifth-generation Quattroporte (‘four doors’) sedan in 2004 and has continued with the striking Gran Turismo. A sixth-generation Quattroporte is now available and Maserati enthusiasts who want the badge but a different kind of capability can look forward to the Levante SUV in around a year’s time. But first, a new ‘baby’ Maserati sedan named Ghibli is due in Australia before March. It’s set to have Maserati fans drooling and likely to turn the heads of owners who until now have turned to BMW, Mercedes-Benz or Audi for highperformance sedans. Expected to be priced below $200,000 when it arrives here, the Ghibli is the first mid-size four-door sports luxury sedan in Maserati’s 100-year history. It was revealed to the world at the Shanghai International Motor Show earlier this year, alongside the latest version of the bigger and more powerful Quattroporte. The Quattroporte and Ghibli sedans will boast two different power outputs from their unique-toMaserati turbocharged V6 petrol engines. Additionally, the Ghibli will be offered with the first diesel engine in Maserati’s history. The turbo-diesel 3.0-litre V6 is promised to deliver traditional Maserati high performance and sound but will use less than six litres per 100 km of fuel in appropriate conditions. The engine was developed by Maserati engineers under the direction of Paolo Martinelli, who led Ferrari engine design before joining Maserati. The Ghibli’s design emphasises its more dynamic driving characteristics by maintaining visual links with the larger Quattroporte while delivering a more aggressive personality.

The grille takes its inspiration from the current GranTurismo and can draw a line back to the classic A6 GCS of the 1950s. Inside, the Ghibli sets itself apart from the Quattroporte with its own sporty dashboard design, yet retains the typical roominess expected in an executive sedan. The Ghibli will be

with

turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 petrol engines, an eightspeed automatic transmission and both rear-wheel drive and the new Q4 all-wheel drive system. The most powerful of the V6s will be the twinturbo unit in the Ghibli S, which produces 301kW of power and 550Nm of torque. The all-wheel drive Ghibli S Q4 will reach 100kmh in 4.8 seconds, while the rear-wheel drive version takes just 0.2 seconds longer. The Ghibli S has a quoted top speed of 285kmh. The second turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine available in the Ghibli not only has an impressive power of 243kW and 500Nm of torque, but also delivers a fuel consumption figure of 9.6 litres/100km. It is much more than a fuel-saving car, though, being capable of accelerating to 100kmh in 5.6 seconds. Both V6 engines were developed by Maserati Powertrain in partnership with Ferrari Powertrain and will be built by Ferrari in its world-leading engine construction facility in Maranello. Sharing much of the technology with the Quattroporte’s 3.8-litre V8 engine, the V6 engines use gasoline direct injection technology along with two low-inertia parallel turbochargers. The Ghibli will also become the first Maserati production car to be powered by a diesel engine. The 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 develops 202kW of power and a crushing 600Nm of torque to deliver 0-100km/h acceleration in 6.3 seconds. Simultaneously, its fuel consumption is less than 6.0 litres per 100km. Every Maserati is instantly recognisable by its engine note and the Ghibli Diesel is no different from its petrol sisters. Two sound actuators, fitted near the exhaust tailpipes, accentuate the engine’s most distinctive tones and modulate them precisely to suit the way the car is being driven. When the driver presses the Sport button on the central tunnel, the sound becomes even more resonant and utterly inspiring. The Ghibli is set to reveal a character all its own thanks to its combination of double-wishbone front suspension and a state-of-the-art, multi-link rear suspension with the option of the active Skyhook system, part-time all-wheel drive, firm suspension damping and powerful braking system. The Ghibli’s three ground-breaking engines will be fitted into a wheelbase that is around 20cm shorter than the Quattroporte (2.99 metres) and an overall length that is, at 4.97 metres, 29cm shorter.

xfactor The XF 2.0 i4 Luxury is the latest star in the Jaguar stable. words chris nixon

It’s not unusual when manufacturers loan a car for press review to load it with thousands of dollars worth of extra features to enhance the experience – and, hopefully, the report read by the public. So to receive the XF 2.0 i4 Luxury for this review in ‘bare-bones’ trim without any ploy to divert attention from the modest 2.0 litre, four-cylinder engine under the bonnet says plenty about Jaguar’s confidence in the lowest-priced model in the local line-up. The XF, an alternative in size to a Mercedes-Benz E-Class or BMW 5 Series, is the car that turned around the fortunes of the British luxury make several years ago. The 2.0 i4, thanks to a list price of $68,545, is the XF that deserves to bring Jaguar new followers. But a full-size Jag, traditionally a make with sporting character at the heart of its identity, powered by an engine more likely to be found in a Corolla involves a leap of faith for buyers. It’s not what you expect, but the bigger surprise is how good it is. The need to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 exhaust emissions, especially in Europe where environmental regulations are tighter, has driven car makers to adopt engines that are significantly smaller but so efficient they lose little or nothing in performance.

99

Jaguar is following the trend (although the choice of six engines across the XF range still includes a massive supercharged V8) and interestingly we have seen this engine already in one of the more humble sedans on our roads, the Ford Falcon Ecoboost. Pumped up with a turbocharger, its outputs come close to a sixcylinder’s – 177 kiloWatts of power and 340 Newtonmetres of torque – but also mean you can have a full-size luxury sedan drinking petrol at less than 8.9 litres per 100 kms. It’s a sweet unit and no owner should feel short-changed about driving a four-cylinder Jag. Rather, appreciate the smoothness, quietness, strong mid-range accelerator response and sporty note. The Jaguar’s sophisticated eight-speed ZF automatic transmission is a great match for the engine. So many gears are not yet common (some cheaper new cars still have only four speeds), but the smaller steps between ratios maximise efficiency. They also require nothing extra of the driver unless he or she chooses the Manual mode via the finger-tip shift levers behind the steering wheel. Either way, ultra-smooth, 200-millisecond up-changes in small increments keep the small turbo engine on the boil. It’s an easy performer on the open highway and in hilly country. The factory claims a top speed of 241 kmh and 0-100 kmh acceleration in 7.9 seconds. The lighter weight of an aluminium four-cylinder engine over the steered front wheels versus a six or eight also helps the car’s roadholding and ride comfort. Based on the record of the magnificent, original XJ saloon, Jaguar is subject to high expectations in these areas. Happily, the XF upholds the standard. The steering is light – perhaps a little too light for some drivers – and turns the nose into bends with easy precision. There are few bumps that upset the absorbency of the suspension.

… appreciate the smoothness, quietness, strong mid-range accelerator response and sporty note.

One expects comfort and luxury with Jaguars and while this ‘Luxury’ contains less luxury than its more expensive stablemates, it hardly disappoints. The XF’s delightful party trick is the ‘handshake’ procedure on startup. The proximity-sensing ignition key lights up the starter button, which pulses red. Then a circular metal gear selector knob rises silently on an electric motor from the centre console and the fascia air vents rotate from closed to open. The seats in this model are not leather but have electric adjustment, as does the steering wheel. The navigation screen is touch-operated and has an impressive feature that automatically zooms the map image when approaching road junctions. The cabin is comfortable, though not unduly spacious in the back. But the accommodation is in keeping with cosy luxury, kids optional. There are four petrol engines, two economical diesels and effectively five trim levels in the XF range. The full-bottle 5.0 XFR-S supercharged V8 will cost $222,545, but the 2.0 i4 Luxury does very well for 70 per cent less.

“When producers and directors visit they are blown away by the size and facilities at the studios and truly surprised at the diversity of locations, their beauty and how accessible they are.” – J AN GREW

“Clearly the weather is a big attraction,” says Dale G Bradley, the Brisbane-based producer behind Bad Karma and Absolute Deception on why Hollywood is taking notice. “We have good conditions 12 months of the year, so if they’re in the northern hemisphere and it’s their winter they want to shoot where the climate is right. “I also believe the Gold Coast is right up there with other exotic places in the world like Miami, Los Angeles, Paris and London – it’s an iconic part of Australia so that’s a big attraction as well.” Bradley similarly praises the Gold Coast’s rich, resourceful and professional film crew as a considerable factor in successful movie production here. “There has to be crew and cast available who know the business and you’ve got that on the Gold Coast,” he acknowledges. “There’s an established industry that knows what they’re doing and that’s a big thing – you can go to all sorts of places in the world but if there aren’t people you can call on to do a top professional international job well, then you can’t make the film.” The producer also has news on a new production he’s working on: a horror film that joins a recent slew of other genre films like Daybreakers, Triangle and Darkness Falls which have all resourcefully used Gold Coast locales. “We’re doing a film this year called Blood Reef and that’s really exploiting Queensland for Queensland and the Gold Coast for the Gold Coast,” he reveals. “It’s a kind of teen-action horror, which will be directed by Brian-Trenchard Smith and takes place in Paradise.” Another positive step for the Gold Coast’s film industry it would certainly seem!

ARIES 21 March – 20 April So many details to sort out. Delegate all of the mundane chores but make sure you have hands on the important elements. There are huge rewards to be won. If you have anything to do with media then there is some excellent news; if not you will be dealing with someone from that industry and they will try and trip you up. Fortunately you will come through with flying colours.

TAURUS 21 April – 21 May There is the feeling of being out of your depth, but you are adept at faking it until you make it. In fact you will exceed your own expectations. You will be looking at a new vehicle. Lifestyle has changed and you need something to reflect who you have become. Transition is nearly over and it’s time to go shopping. Not just for a vehicle but possible new business premises, clothes or statement jewellery.

GEMINI 22 May – 21 June You will certainly show both sides of Gemini this month. People will not know what they are getting at any particular moment; and that is perfectly ok as it keeps them on their toes. Spread the love over the coming weeks, little surprises often will be much appreciated. You will think about changing where you have your morning coffee. Enjoy exploring although you will probably end up right back where you started.

CANCER 22 June – 23 July PISCES 20 February – 20 March You will be making it very clear that you are not taking any prisoners. It may seem a little harsh, but the next two months have a lot going on with legal matters to discuss, negotiate and sign off. Any planning that was done last year may have to be put in the shredder and started again. Financial conditions have changed, more than likely for the better, so that you can upscale and spend a little more money. For the first few days of the period take yourself out and about, reconnect with friends and business acquaintances who are arriving back from holidays. Organise a dinner or cocktail party. A little socialising and business mixed together will be very successful. Visit the beauty spa or, in the case of gentlemen, an exclusive barber to have that totally groomed confidence.

LEO 24 July – 23 August Your opinion will be asked for; a few days later you will discover the absolute reverse has been done and it has been a disaster. It will be an interesting conversation when this person meets up with you again. There is hot romance if you desire. Enjoy the moment but understand it is not permanent. For those who are partnered, pregnancy is in the wind. It will be unexpected, but very welcome.

VIRGO 24 August – 23 September Throw it out. That is your mantra for the next eight weeks. For you this is more about environment and garden rather than clothes or personal possessions. Look at the art on your walls, your statement pieces in the house. Do you love it? If not then start from scratch. Perhaps you are writing a book, a blog or a thesis. It is a very good time. No writer’s block for you.

LIBRA 24 September – 23 October Being indecisive could be dangerous. But at the same time you do not like making decisions without all the information. Be pro-active and find out what you need to know as quickly as possible. Fact-finding has to be personal, however, advice from others can save precious time. It is not all doom and gloom; things are extremely successful once you have decided what you are doing.

Luck is very much with you, and those who own anything that races will be delighted at how well things go. There is a little envy in the mix. Take it as a sign that you are on top of the world.

CAPRICORN 23 December – 20 January Make sure that all the finishing touches are in place before you send something out or step into the limelight. Every detail is going to be noticed and you do not want to be the one that is singled out because something is missing. You are going to indulge someone with a surprise of a lifetime. Although it is some months away bespoke gifts have a long delivery time, so plan well ahead.
