In this edition (our 30th!) we are celebrating five years of style.

publisher Clare E. Urwin | Sanctuary Cove Publishing

Since our very first issue back in 2007 we have endeavoured to bring you the very best people and places; cars and cuisine; travel and trends … and this edition is no exception. Internationally renowned photographer Paul Giggle has taken our gorgeous cover shot, and also put together a lavish seven page fashion spread that is sure to impress. Fashion and fast cars go hand in hand, so we have also extended our motoring section. Some of the top brands are showcased in this special feature which starts on page 78 with a story on arguably the world’s most talked about car, the Ferrari. Of course, no edition of the Cove would be complete without some fantastic travel stories. From the luxurious Halekulani resort

advice for our readers. Speaking of legends, Bill Gates is best known as the founder of Microsoft but it is his work with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation which is now taking priority. Don’t miss our interview with Bill and Melinda on page 20. We also catch up with Hugh Laurie, whose role as TV’s most talked about doctor, House, is drawing to a close; preview a unique father and son art exhibition, Studio to Studio – Robert and John Lovett’s Open Studios Exhibition 2012; and travel up the M1 to Brisbane to inspect the prestigious Scott St Apartments. Avid readers of the magazine will notice a few changes in this edition … we have added an entertainment section; moved the social pages to the back section (some would say we’ve kept the best for last), and introduced a new Cove Directory. And, as it is our anniversary edition, we have a great ‘present’ for one lucky reader. See our competition page which is now on page 84. Finally, on behalf of the Cove team, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you – our readers, our advertisers and our contributors – for your ongoing support. Five years is a remarkable milestone and one we are very proud of ... may the next five prove to be just as much fun!

Timeless elegance Brisbane born artist Corinne Lewis is known for her opulent images of beautiful women set in a timeless past. Her passion for painting striking figures in elegant and seductive poses stems from her desire to emulate the impact of iconic fashion photographs of the 1940s. Corinne is both a collector of and an authority on vintage fashion and utilises her skills as a stylist, fashion photographer and traditional oil painter in each work. The paintings ooze sensuality and glamour but are often underscored by a darker narrative. This is a highly stylised vision of femininity suggesting both fragility and sexual power.

Josh Earl vs The Australian Women’s Weekly Children’s Birthday Cake Book

18

In 2008 Josh Earl performed a show where he briefly mentioned the Australian Women’s Weekly Children’s Birthday Cake Book. The reaction was like nothing he had experienced before. People couldn’t concentrate on the next joke because they were thinking of the cakes. Josh promised that he would come back next year and do a show all about this book. This is that show! Top Designs

Best Imitation – Cate Maddy

24 March –15 July

7 – 26 April

Top Designs is part of the VCE Season of Excellence. Works are created by a selection of exemplary design students who completed VCE in 2011 and include furniture, garments using fibre, yarn and fabric, graphic and product design, short films, interactive media, print layout, photography, food product planning, mechanical and electronic projects.

Melbourne-based Cate Maddy’s colour-saturated paintings manifest a remarkable elegance and sophistication of technique. Cate creates beautiful artificial worlds to assuage her longing for nature and escape the rigors of an increasingly commodified existence. The works aim to create a dialogue between silences and spaces.

The Dragon’s Back

Marian Drew + Alana Hampton

23 March – 6 May

24 March – 6 May

This exhibition celebrates the ‘Year of the Dragon’ in an Australian ceramic context. Three regional ceramic artists, Sue Fraser, Louise Fulton and Ruth Park, have been influenced by the cultures of Asia and the Middle East and bring to life the connections between dragons and Mount Warning’s caldera rim.

Marian Drew and Alana Hampton present a multi-channel media and sound installation; creating an immersive environment through the layering of light, sound, light drawing and the projection of still and moving photographic images. Their work is based around a little visited island in the middle of the Gold Coast Broadwater.

Studio to Studio – Robert and John Lovett’s Open Studios Exhibition 2012 is special in many ways. It is Robert and John’s first joint exhibition, and offers patrons the chance to see two generations, father and son, in their Currumbin Waters studios and observe first hand both the similarities and differences in their artistic styles. “Our studios are only a little over a kilometre apart – even less if you go via Currumbin Creek – so we decided, rather than mix the paintings up and confuse everyone, my work would be hung in my studio and my father’s work in his studio,” John explains. “We are hoping patrons will take the time to move between the two and enjoy the informal studio environment in both locations.” For John, who held his first exhibition in Sydney when he was just 19 years old, this is a chance to showcase his work to a whole new audience. “That was nearly 40 years ago now,” says John. “I’ve held many exhibitions since then, but this is the first time I have had an exhibition on the Gold Coast. “It’s nice to be able to display my work in my own studio, particularly with Dad doing the same thing at his place at the same time.” Now 81, Robert has been working as a professional artist for over 60 years. As the official artist for the Snowy Mountains Authority from 1950 to 1968, he spent much of his early career on location, capturing the rugged beauty of Australia’s ‘High Country’. “In those days I didn’t own a camera so I did a lot of sketches, then I’d go home and paint from them,” he recalls. “I’ve still got dozens of sketchbooks from years ago. In fact I was looking through one recently and there are drawings looking down Sydney Harbour onto the bridge and there’s not a high-rise building to be seen!” So what can we expect to see in this latest exhibition? “My paintings are an accumulation of work I’ve produced over the past four years,” Robert says. “There is a mix of oils and watercolours but there is no particular theme because during that time I have travelled to several countries and these pieces are the result.” John has also chosen to exhibit an eclectic collection of his work. “For my part the paintings cover a range of subjects, sizes and mediums from European villages to Australian wetlands; urban studies from New York to the solitude of early morning Currumbin,” says John. “There are some large canvases, full, half and quarter sheet watercolor and mixed media works plus a number of unframed, matted demonstration paintings and studio sketches.” While artistic talent obviously runs in the genes, Robert and John use very different styles and techniques to create their works of art. “When John was starting out we decided it would be no good for either of us if our work was too similar so he went off to art school and developed his own style, while I continued along in my own way,” Robert explains. “I am a traditionalist, while John uses more mixed media.” “I use pretty much anything I can lay my hands on,” John admits. ”I used to work in a more traditional way but I’ve moved away from that now.

“It started when the kids were little and I was playing around with them on the floor using pencils, crayons and charcoal. This painting came about and I really loved it. I thought ‘why don’t I paint like this all the time’, so I started experimenting and it’s made a world of difference. I used to think there was a ‘right’ way to paint and that I should do it the ‘right’ way but when I started doing it the ‘wrong’ way I had a lot more success.” While both Robert and John now enjoy international acclaim, both insist being an artist is just like any other occupation. “Painting was my sole source of income so I had to regard it as a job,” Robert says. “I was pretty energetic and worked hard when I was younger. Now I’m more laid back. “For me, it has been a fascinating journey of more than sixty years. Not only do I enjoy my studio work but there are those wonderful forays into the bush and the outback, the artist camps and the yarns around the campfire at night. Travelling to exotic destinations, and holding exhibitions in Australia as well as many foreign cities, have all been part of this ‘day to day’ existence.” “You do need to be disciplined and work to set hours,” explains John. “Not that the hard work is a chore … it’s very satisfying ... but just like any other job some days are better than others. “I just try to please myself when I work but then you talk to someone who has bought one of your paintings and they are so excited. It’s good to know that people love what you do and that they enjoy what I enjoy doing.” Which brings us back to the Studio to Studio exhibition. “Both John and myself have held many exhibitions independently but this one is unique in that it’s the first time we have joined forces,” says Robert. “I am very proud of John’s achievements and I am delighted that he will share this with his ‘old man’.”

A new award category has been opened up for 2012, thanks to the enterprising efforts of some very determined little competitors who dressed up their bicycles to join the parade in 2011. Each year the Easter Buggy Parade entrants put an enormous amount of love and energy into their decorations, turning out buggies festooned with dozens of balloons, or transformed into Easter Bunnies on wheels. This year’s event is expected to see some of the most creative entries yet, guaranteeing a vibrant visual feast for everyone. Kids of all ages will have a ball taking part in the

requisite Easter activity, the Easter Egg Hunt. Little hunters will be divided into age groups to ensure they all have a chance to add some extra choccies to their stash. If they have extra energy to burn, the kids can have a turn (or three) on the jumping castles. There will also be face painting, so little beauty queens and kings can have a creative makeover, and balloon twisting so that they can take home a souvenir aside from their sugary bounty. The Eggstravaganza will also feature live entertainment, a coffee cart and a hot cross bun station so the adults can relax and refuel. And of course, no Easter celebration would be complete without a special guest appearance by the Easter Bunny himself. He will be hopping happily around The Marine Village during the festivities, carrying his basket full of chocolate goodies.

Following the Easter celebrations, take some time to unwind and explore the rest of The Marine Village. Located on the edge of the picturesque harbour, The Marine Village is the heart of Sanctuary Cove. Offering a range of fashion boutiques, galleries and specialty stores, you can indulge your sartorial side as well as your tastebuds and spend the afternoon discovering their unique offerings. Tame the sugar overload and stop in for a delicious lunch at one of The Marine Village’s restaurants and cafés. From authentic Italian or Mediterranean-inspired flavours to contemporary Australian or traditional pub fare, there is a menu to please every palate. Indulge in al fresco-style dining and take full advantage of the waterside setting, or simply relax in the restaurants’ uniquely-themed interiors. Afterwards, ease your Easter guilt and take a stroll along the harbour. The tranquil Marina provides the perfect backdrop for a walk and the perfect end to a day of indulgence. This year, the Sanctuary Cove Easter Eggstravaganza has all the ingredients for a funfilled celebration that will delight the kids and parents alike. And … action! Gold Coast Film Festival 2012 – A celebration of cinema on a cosmic scale. words Mitch Ziems

The Gold Coast Film Festival advances from its usual November date to April in 2012, a result of an exclusive partnership with Supanova, the country’s largest pop-culture convention. What’s set to come is an explosive ten-day event which marks the inauguration of the number one pop-culture film festival in Australia. One of the key attractions at this year’s festival will undoubtedly be science-fiction and fantasy writer Alan Dean Foster. Alan is revered for his association with high grossing and much loved film series such as Star Trek, Star Wars and Alien, as well as his original content which includes the Spellsinger novels (the first of which is set to be produced in Australia, with Alan writing the script). His range of experience and advice covers the

32

adaptation and novelisation of screen, novel, video game and even radio stories, as well as creating original genre content for the page and screen. Alan is excited to share the news on all his latest projects while reminiscing about some of his most prominent work, during his first trip to Australia since 1993. “While the internet allows for infinitely more (discussion with fans) than in earlier times, there’s still no substitute for person-to-person interaction,” he explains. “Smart creators listen to their fans. They may not always agree, but they listen.” Alan is also set to present a master class for emerging talent on writing for film and television, along with tips to adapting the visual mediums to the page. “There is no one with Alan Dean Foster’s extensive knowledge of science fiction and fantasy creation and adaptation in Australia,” explains Festival Director Casey Marshall Siemer. Undoubtedly one of the most common questions will be regarding Alan’s novelisations of some of the sci-fi genre’s most popular films. He adapted the original Star Wars film (though George Lucas received sole credit) and wrote the saga’s first expanded universe novel Splinter of the Mind’s Eye. Crossing one of sci-fi’s biggest boundaries, Alan is also responsible for the novelisation of Star Trek: The Motion Picture, and wrote ten books based on episodes of Star Trek: The Animated Series. Furthermore, to the thrill of trekkies everywhere, Alan will introduce a very special showing of the first Star Trek film, Star Trek: The Motion Picture, in its original 35mm print format, and will hold a Q&A session at the end of the screening. It’s fantastic news for Gold Coast Film Festival and Supanova fans alike, and Alan is only the first of many ‘cross-over guests’ who will appear at both events as they celebrate their first year as cultural

partners celebrating pop-culture on the Gold Coast. Supanova have already announced guests including Oliver and James Phelps, otherwise known as the Weasley Twins from Harry Potter, Nelsan Ellis, who plays True Blood’s Lafayette and the original Afro Samurai, Jim Kelly. The partnership with Supanova was an obvious decision for Gold Coast Film Festival Director Casey Marshall Siemer and Supanova director Daniel Zachariou, who saw the evident bond between pop-culture fans and cinephiles. In founding Australia’s premium pop-culture film festival, the partnership offers unprecedented access to celebrities and their work. There are even more surprises to come, along with announcements regarding the annual programs which have lead to a 283 per cent increase in attendance under Marshall-Siemer’s guidance. Film fans can look forward to free outdoor screenings of family friendly films, free seminars for high school students, a program of Japanese pop culture films, award-winning movies from all across the globe (which, in 2011, included Q&A sessions with members of cast and crew from Asia Pacific Screen Award winners Elena and Once Upon a Time in Anatolia), a showcase of local productions and a fantastic opening night red carpet affair which brings national and international celebrities alike to Australia Fair’s Birch Caroll and Coyle Cinemas. Being held on the Gold Coast, one of the event’s key drawcards is its amalgamation of beach life and film culture, something Alan Dean Foster looks forward to experiencing. “... one way or another, I’ll have to make some time to do some body surfing.” The Gold Coast Film Festival will run from 19-29 April at Australia Fair Cinemas, while Supanova opens on 20 April and concludes on the 22 April. iconic brands

Style icon The name Chanel may be synonymous with style … but it wasn’t always that way. words Susan Lang-Lemckert

Coco Chanel She’s famous for creating The Little Black Dress and the most enduring women’s fragrance of all time ... but just who was the legendary Coco Chanel? Born into a rural poorhouse and spending the latter part of her childhood in a French orphanage, Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel, who would ascend to greatness as style icon and ‘fashion liberator’ Coco Chanel, had more humble beginnings than most. But being blessed with an inherent drive and a loving extended family whose elegance inspired her, she was always destined for extraordinary things. On leaving the orphanage, Chanel worked in a lingerie shop by day and frequented night clubs in the evenings, where she became a popular chanteuse and acquired the soubriquet ‘Coco’, which she carried for the rest of her life. Ever a non-conformist, Coco Chanel dressed differently from most women, favouring the simple, classic lines she’d later become famous for. And despite having moved into more affluent circles,

38

her austere beginnings had engendered a resolve to never depend on others for income. The uniqueness of Chanel’s designs ensured success for her first commercial foray – into millinery – where she pioneered a somewhat masculine style that was not only different, but far more practical for wearing than the over-the-top styles of the day. Applying these principles again when branching into clothing design placed Chanel at the forefront of a changing couture market as the first stirrings of women’s liberation were felt and restrictive garments like corsets were dispensed with. And her chic-but-practical designs became ever more popular as women’s roles changed in the early 20th century due to economic and social conditions surrounding World War I and the Depression. She’d also pioneered the use of jersey for her designs – initially due to its low cost, but she found its fluidity suited Chanel designs perfectly, rendering them all the more distinct. To mark her 40th birthday in 1923, Chanel

developed what would become her most famous product – the fragrance Chanel No. 5, named after her lucky number. And as a testament to Chanel’s belief that ‘simplicity is the keynote of all true elegance’, the style of the bottle and its distinctive black-and-white label have stood the test of time, remaining unchanged today. Though the perfume business continued, Chanel closed all of her clothing operations soon after World War II was declared, and didn’t produce another collection until 1954, by which time the fashion world was dominated by male designers like Christian Dior. A lukewarm reception to the 130-model collection in Paris was soon followed by exuberant reviews from the United States, and Chanel was once again an international fashion force to be reckoned with. Still working at the time of her death (in 1971) at the age of 87, her phenomenal contribution to fashion has seen Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel’s name remain synonymous with class, style and luxury.

Chanel No. 5 ... the style of the bottle and its distinctive black-and-white label have stood the test of time.

The Wertheimers While Coco Chanel’s enduring style and mystique inspired and nurtured the budding Chanel brand, it’s a family of enterprising quiet achievers – the Wertheimers – who transformed it into the global empire it is today. The earliest connection between the Wertheimers and cosmetics was forged in 1870, when Ernest Wertheimer purchased an interest in Bourjois, a French theatrical make-up company that grew to become the country’s largest cosmetics and fragrance manufacturer by the 1920s. But a true legend began when, following their introduction in 1922, Chanel sought financial assistance from Ernest’s son Pierre to market her newly-developed fragrance ... Chanel No. 5. Parfums Chanel – founded by Pierre, who retained a majority share – operated independently of Chanel’s design business, although her fashions also bore the prestigious name. Both enterprises flourished during the 1920s and 1930s, but only Parfums Chanel continued production during the Second World War, under the guidance of a French proxy the forward-thinking Wertheimers appointed to oversee operations when they fled to the United States for the duration of the war. Renowned for top-drawer campaigns and using high-profile celebrities to promote their fragrances, one of Parfums Chanel’s advertisements –

featuring Marilyn Monroe splashing herself with Chanel No. 5 – remains among the most popular marketing photographs in history. And many other famous ladies have graced screen and page as ‘spokesmodels’ for the company’s different fragrances – like Vanessa Paradise (Coco Perfume), Anna Mouglalis (Chanel Allure Sensuelle) and Keira Knightley (Coco Mademoiselle). Meanwhile, in 1954, the then-70-year-old Chanel decided to re-commence the fashion design and production operations she’d closed down in 1939, and once again approached Pierre for advice and finance which, showing incredible foresight, he provided in return for the rights to all products bearing the Chanel name. And when Chanel’s second wave of fashions met with great success, this in turn enhanced the perfume’s image and profitability. Pierre’s son Jacques Wertheimer, a renowned horse breeder, took over Chanel’s operations in 1965, but it was nine years later, when his own son Alain gained control, that things really started to change and move. In a stroke of marketing genius, 25-year-old Alain bolstered demand for the then-waning Chanel No. 5’s US market dominance by creating exclusivity – the fragrance was removed from drugstore shelves, and the number of selling outlets slashed by

33 per cent. The strategy worked beautifully, boosting sales just as anticipated. The next move was to lift Chanel’s fashion operations, which the company initially achieved by engaging designer and visionary Karl Lagerfeld, and opening more than 40 Chanel boutiques throughout the world to carry the company’s range of fashion, fragrances and accessories. The company’s focus on the burgeoning US market was also reflected by the early-1980s relocation of Alain Wertheimer’s offices from France to New York, which continues to be the company’s base. But throughout all expansion and change, the Wertheimers never relinquished control of any of Chanel’s operations – and even today, Chanel is one of only a few cosmetic/apparel companies not to license its fragrances, cosmetics or apparel to other producers or distributors. Under the expert stewardship of Alain Wertheimer and company CEO and President Françoise Montenay, Chanel has continued to expand and diversify into new domains by acquiring prestigious companies like gunsmith Holland & Holland, luxury swimwear manufacturer Eres, and the Bordeaux Grand Cru Classé estates Château Rauzan-Ségla and Château Canon. But whatever the nature of the product, Chanel will always be Chanel – and Chanel will always be in style.

The power of orange Henrietta Dups delves deep into the psychology of this season’s hottest hue and discovers why orange pushes our buttons.

Generally my favourite hue is blue in all different tones from darkest navy to electric blue and turquoise. Yet recently I have noticed that I am craving the exact opposite on the colour wheel, wrapping myself in brightest orange at every opportunity. I have become the embodiment of 19th century French painter Eugene Delacroix’s famous quote: ‘Everyone knows that yellow, orange and red suggest ideas of joy and plenty. I can paint you the skin of Venus with mud, provided you let me surround it as I will’. I have caught myself surrounding my form like a Delacroix painting in every shade of orange imaginable; apricot, carrot, peach, pumpkin, saffron, tangerine ... It all started when I stumbled across a Mecca for footwear fashionistas www.shoesofprey.com. I designed my own pair of a fabulous tangerine snakeskin shoes, but then couldn’t decide whether to have them made up as ballet flats, wedge pumps, stilettos or booties so I opted for all four styles. Then slowly this predilection for bright, sunny orange started to make its way up my legs with the impulse purchase of a 70s inspired strapless jumpsuit in turmeric by Alexis Dawn. My closet’s only saving grace is that orange is the complimentary colour to my original closet full of blue shades, so the two colours co-ordinate exquisitely. But why this sudden spin on the colour wheel from primary blue to secondary orange? It seems that true bright orange is the one hue in the colour spectrum that elicits the strongest ‘love it’ or ‘hate it’ reaction in people. Not surprising given both its cultural, political and religious significance throughout history around the globe. In Ireland wearing orange on St Patrick’s Day is not only a social faux pas but in the wrong part of town can be down right dangerous. Whereas, for Rachel Gilbert – Pixan Top

American Indians the colour orange is associated with kinship, and for both the Japanese and Chinese it symbolises happiness and love. Deep saffron is the most sacred of colours in Hinduism, while wearing an orange turban represents wisdom for Sikhs. In Christianity the colour orange is symbolic of the sin of gluttony, which makes sense given that research has shown that the colour stimulates the appetite. Studies show that colours can affect how we experience temperature and sound which explains why we describe colours as cool or warm, loud or soft. Experiments have also shown that a given sound appears to have different intensities in the same room when the wall colours are changed, becoming much noisier when the room is painted glaring orange. Therefore if you are quietly spoken it is an idea to incorporate an orange top such as Pixan by

peach and apricot or a geometric print that incorporates orange with more neutral tones such as the Tally silk blouse by Easton Pearson. Remember that when you wear orange people will perceive you as extroverted, enthusiastic and uninhibited with a dash of youthful impulsiveness. Therefore it is important to gauge when, where and how to wear orange depending on the audience, the environment and the seriousness of the meeting.

Similarly if you are a naturally gregarious and outspoken person it may be wise not to dress in head to toe bright orange as you may come

For networking events go bold and bright, head to toe, if you dare, as orange stimulates two way conversation and helps you stand out from

you snag a swag of dates. Colour psychologists believe that, psychologically, orange is optimistic and uplifting, rejuvenating our spirit. In fact they maintain that its effects are so positive to our wellbeing that we should all find ways to use it in lacquer. Orange is also associated with enthusiasm and inspires physical confidence, independence and creativity. If you are suffering ‘writers block’ envelope yourself in a Biggan Design five shades of orange merino knit Saya wrap as it will stimulate your creativity and keep you toasty warm. Orange can also help bring spontaneity and a positive attitude to life which is why it is a great colour to use during tough economic times. Fashion, like art, is a social barometer always reflecting and interpreting the social consciousness and sentiment. It is no coincidence then that orange shades have become a key colour trend during the current global financial crisis, helping us see the bright side of life during all this economic gloom. Orange is also thought to offer emotional strength in difficult times so next time you get knocked back from a job interview or end a relationship, paint your lips with Chi Chi’s Hot Mama blood-orange lipstick, shimmy into a Del Mar one shoulder tangerine kaftan, slip on a pair of Penn killer heels by Tom Gunn, knock back a Campari cocktail and go out and paint the town red-orange. So after all this investigation I have realised that this orange injection of garments and accessories has rejuvenated and added zest to my originally safe and calm wardrobe. It has breathed new life into all my shades of blue and unleashed a flow of creative energy in everything I do. In the words of the genius Dutch painter Vincent Van Gogh: ‘There is no blue without yellow and without orange’.

Spice it up Add some warm electric colours to your cosmetic bag this autumn. words Linette Gramstad

Next time you go to buy make-up you will notice how many bold colours are out there now … hot orange, red and coral are the latest fashion trend. They might sound like colours you would not usually go for but you will be surprised how great they can look when worn correctly. Not only are they warm, they are fun, energetic and vibrant ... While the natural look is the safe option we usually fall back on no matter what, why not think outside the everyday make-up box and dare to be creative? Hot orange is the new blue (the colour which was so popular in the sixties). The ‘now’ look happens to be fresh natural looking skin using a flawless base coverage of foundation, with the addition of a bright colour or two, blended (or not) to create a statement. As orange and red are strong colours you do not want to overdo it. Choose the parts of your face you want to accentuate; for example eyes, lips or cheeks, then add a bold colour blush. Make sure you keep it simple and don’t use colours that contrast one another! To make the colour orange you simply mix red and yellow together, so bear this in mind if you want to make your own shade of orange or can’t find one you really like. If orange is too electric for you, you can go for coral colours and peachy tones. Nails are something you can really create a statement with too, especially when combined with an eye or lip make-over. Do try to match the colours closely to each other as this looks best. Some people might suit these bright colours better than others depending on skin tone, hair colour and eye colour, so I have decided to just pick out some of my favourite ‘hot’ products and pass them on to you. I have also chosen a few coral/ peachy colours for those readers who just aren’t comfortable wearing the vibrant colours.

REL A X RECHARGE REJUVENATE For all hair and beauty services in the one location.

Now let’s re-design your cosmetic bag: NAILS: Quite often the nail varnish you pick reflects your personality. Orange polish generally looks better on darker skin tones. If you have lighter skin go for corals or reds unless you particularly like the look of orange. Try one of these long lasting colours. • OPI: Atomic Orange, Tasmanian Devil Made Me Do It, or Bright Lights-Big Color. • Revlon: Make Mine Mango Red No. 920, or Siren No. 440. Both these polishes have a coral tinge which tones the colour down, but are still very bold. • L’Oréal: Resist & Shine No. 430. This polish offers great shine and has a large, easy to use top. To create nails with a difference, add OPI red shatter polish over your chosen colour. LIPS: Apply a fruity flavoured gloss for delicious lips. • Napoleon Perdis: Swept Away Siren lip gloss pack. Comes in orange, passionfruit, pineapple, mango and strawberry flavour. These glosses contain vitamins and moisturising properties so your lips will be left fruitilicious! • Revlon: A flavoured gloss which gives a fresh effect with a tinge of colour and minimal sparkle is called Orange Fizz. Another favourite is ColorStay Overtime Lip Color in Perennial Peach. • MAC: Lychee Luxe lip glass. This is my personal favourite gloss at the moment, it really makes your lips pop! • MAC: No. 278. This lipstick has good staying power and helps your lips stand out without making them too prominent. I would recommend neutral eyes when wearing this. BLUSH: Add a touch of colour to make your cheeks glow. • Napoleon Perdis: Cherry Bomb can be used as blush for your cheeks or applied as eye shadow. Available in matte or shimmer, this colour really gives you a runway look when applied to flawless looking skin. It is ideal for spicing up a natural look. • MAC: Peaches blush is a peach colour with orange undertone. This can also be used as eye shadow. There is really no reason for you not being able to use eye colour on lips and lip colour on eyes, a lot of make-up artists actually do this. • MAC: Style blush. This is more of a red with an orange tone. As it is a stronger shade than the Peaches blush, make sure to have neutral lips. EYESHADOW: I found eye shadows a little more limited in the bright oranges, but my favourite has got to be INGLOT single eye shadow No. 51 in orange. This colour can be used alone for a bold statement or blended with other colours such as peach, beige, gold, yellow or brown. I tried mixing with INGLOT No. 407 in peach. This gave a really nice shimmery effect and blended well together. JAZZ IT UP: Accessorise your new make-up wardrobe with a funky cosmetic bag. Try MAKIKO make-up bags in Floral Flowers Orange (available online from www.makikohangers.com). Also, throw in a citrus moisturising hand and body lotion for hydration on the go. Moisturised skin doesn’t just look better, it feels better. Mor hand and body lotion has the uplifting smell of Clementine and calming effect of Neroli. All these products are available online or at selected department stores.

Festival fare

Since its small beginnings in November 2003 the Noosa Food and Wine Festival has grown in every way imaginable. words Tony Harper

Noosa Food and Wine Festival was once a comparatively modest affair held between Berardo’s Restaurant and Noosa’s Main Beach and host to 100 or so visitors. But even in its infancy its list of participants was impressive; Simon Johnson, Luke Mangan, Stephen Henschke, Lindy Milan, Huon Hooke and a bunch of other highly regarded names from food and wine circles. The 2012 version dwarfs the original. This year it has been extended to four full days and its cast and list of events have become massive. More than 150 colourful food, wine and media personalities will be presenting their ideas, products and techniques to the 26,000 attendees. This year also sees the title of the event grow to become the Noosa International Food and Wine Festival, thanks to the inclusion of some big hitters from Europe and Asia including chefs Alvin Leung (Bo Innovation, Hong Kong), Seiji Yamamoto (Ryujin, Japan), David Thompson (Nahm, London) and Davide Scabin (Combal Zero, Italy) and wine writer Lisa Perrotti-Brown M.W. (Singapore). They will pool their talents (along with Matt Preston, Mark Best, Ben Shewry and Fergus Henderson) to produce the $750 per head Qantas

58

‘Best Dinner in the World’. Given the talent pool going into its creation (and the money you could spend dining at their restaurants) it promises to be both amazing and pretty good value! A popular event (and one that has been with the Festival since its inaugural year) is the food critics cooking competition. It’s an incredibly fun idea – the likes of John Lethlean (The Australian), Matt Preston (MasterChef and Delicious), Margie Fraser (The Courier Mail) and Stephen Downes (Herald Sun) – folk who make their livings critiquing the work of others – dirty their hands and aprons (and, in Matt Preston’s case … his cravat) preparing picnic dishes for the hordes. Critiquing the critics becomes the job of the public as they cast their vote for the People’s Choice Award. MasterChef gets a good look in with Kate Bracks, Julie Goodwin and Adam Liaw putting together the MasterChef’s Dinner Party on the main stage on Saturday morning. For many it is the cooking demonstrations that hold the greatest allure. This year you can watch Teag Ezard (Ezards, Melbourne) and Brendon Barker

(XO, Sunshine Beach) give some insight into ‘Yum Cha for Beginners’; Justin North (Becasse, Sydney) and Jacques Reymond (Jacques Reymond, Melbourne) are doing something under the banner of ‘The Masters’; Lucio Galletto (Lucio’s, Sydney) demonstrates ‘The Art of Pasta’ and Cheong Liew (The Botanical, Melbourne) and Daniel Hong (XO Sunshine Beach) will show Asian cooking with ‘No MSG’. These are but a representative example of what is a packed program spanning the Main Stage and two marquees. Some are quite serious (I’m betting Jacques Reymond will add a certain gravitas) and others are far more frivolous. Wine gets a good airing with International Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon Masterclasses, a champagne tasting hosted by Australia’s lady of bubbles, Bernadette O’Shea, and Julian Marteau from Champagne Mumm and a plethora of other tastings and discussions. If it all sounds a bit too serious … relax. The event is spread across a large area and several marquees. You can wander through and take a peek at one of those cooking demonstrations; get involved in a debate about sustainable produce, or (groan) legislation affecting restaurants; grab a coffee, a cold beer or choose from the fifty-four wine producers peddling their latest vintages and use it to wash down Matt Preston’s burger, then sit back and enjoy the music. Live music has played an increasingly important role in the festival peaking (this, of course, is merely the opinion of an eighties-tragic) with the double act of Marcia Hines and Kate Cebrano two years ago. This year it is up to Sneaky Sound System and Audio Vixen to keep the toes tapping. The Noosa International Food and Wine Festival is an extraordinary event, and one that every food or wine lover should think about attending. The fact that it has Noosa as its backdrop merely adds to its allure, but in the end the magic is in the fact that close to 30,000 like-minded folk are gathered together to rub shoulders with a horde of big-names and immerse themselves in the subjects they love best … food and wine.

wine cellar

Back to the future If I had to name the single most endearing feature of wine, it would be its chameleon nature. words Tony Harper

I drink more beer than wine (ok, I might taste five or six thousand wines each year and only one or two hundred beers, but on a ‘per litre’ basis, beer wins hands-down), however, to experience something new in beer I need to switch brands. With wine I get a different version every year – one that reflects the vagaries of the growing season – and I can watch that wine change and blossom over a period of months and years. Try that with a stubbie of Corona. We also live in an age in which wine styles are evolving at a tremendous pace. You only need to think about where Australian chardonnay has come from (oaky, rich and overblown) to where it is today (lean, taut and subtle) to see the shift that has occurred in a decade. As far as I am concerned the most exciting innovation has been the birth of the ‘natural’ wine crew. It’s a little bit ‘back to the future’: folk making wine without additions or manipulation, using techniques that were practiced by the early winemakers more the 200 years ago. The results are astounding; healthier for both the consumer and our environment, challenging to our perceptions of ‘neat’ wine, often cloudy, more textural, wild and complex than wine made by the usual methods. The easiest to find of this fairly elusive group is T’Gallant ‘Claudius’ – a wild, white blend that’s the colour of creek water and just as cloudy. Kevin McCarthy makes it by fermenting (and then ageing) white grapes on their skins, a practice that is as unusual as it is risky, especially in this land of clinically clean wines. I love it! It is textural, savagely dry and exceedingly complex; grippy and taut with acid but interwoven with juicy notes of pear and citrus; as surprising as it is non-conformist. Claudius is the wild card in Kevin McCarthy’s deck: the rest of the T’gallant pack, although refreshingly individual, is far more conformist. For a trio of young South Australian’s making wines on the edge is a way of life. Anton Von Klopper, Tom Shobbrook and James Erskine are good friends with a similar mission – to make great wines with as little intervention as possible. Their vineyards are nurtured using biodynamic practice (which, in itself, is an arcane art

64

T’Gallant ‘Claudius’

to some folk but in reality provides a tremendous platform for vibrant fruit and lively ecosystems from microbes to mammals) and their wines are made with the least possible intervention, allowing the end result to speak loudly of the earth on which it was grown, the year in which it was vintaged and the myriad influences that form the character of the grape juice and wine. For me it’s a no brainer. I’d rather taste those complexities than the stamp of a cooper or the ‘house style’ of a serious producer. In the case of Anton Von Klopper and his brand Domaine Lucci, it is the pinot noirs that grab the most attention. His home is the Adelaide Hills and as far as I am concerned these are the most complex, perfumed, profound pinots to come from the area, and – despite their unmistakable individuality – they must surely rank amongst the greatest in the country. Anton has just released his 2011s and they are, as usual, in exceedingly short supply. The 2011 Monomeith is dark, chewy and juicy, structured like an athlete with wiry tannins, firm acidity and the flesh laid tautly on the bones. It suckers you with its perfume then confounds you with its strength. Tom Shobbrook plies his trade from his parents’ vineyard at Seppeltsfield on the western edge of the Barossa Valley. Tom’s wines have the ability to tickle all sorts of taste buds, but for me that jewel in the Shobbrook crown is his Adelaide Hills Sauvignon Blanc. It’s a wine that, once again, has broken the usual rules but has come up trumps. I visited in 2011 when it was fermenting – a wooden crate with a plastic lining full of bunches (whoa! it’s important to know how different that is! Most white wines are made from juice separated as quickly as possible from the hardening effects of skins, stalks and seeds. Fermenting with all of those bits intact is simply calculated madness), covered with an old fitted sheet. Today it sits in bottle with more sinew, depth and complexity than sauvignon blanc has any right to exhibit. But amidst the sinew is fruit, steely bright and crystal clear. It is a simply wonderful wine, as different from the Marlborough pack as Beethoven is from Metallica.

Further south in McLaren Vale James Erskine crafts a range of wine, the pick of which are a handful of Grenache and Syrah (shiraz) Grenache blends from different vineyards. The great appeal here is the ethereal quality of the Grenache. In many ways they remind me more of cool climate pinot noir with their delicate fruit notes and complex fragrance, with loads of exotic spice (the Indian sort – cardamom, clove, fennel etc) and an unobtrusive but firm structure. If the wines these guys are crafting were passable you’d be excused for thinking them a passing fad. But the wines are profound. They demand attention and, even if you don’t really love them, respect. And … I can’t help myself. The world of beer is also moving fast … even in Australia. Moon Dog Brewery has re-written the rule-book, making small, singular batches of confronting, powerful brews that sit on the perimeter of what most Australians consider as beer. Their ‘Black Lung’ is a smoked stout conditioned in used bourbon barrels. For me … it’s an epiphany. Moon Dog instills in its beer a whiff of what Anton, Tom, James and Kevin instill in their wines, teetering on the edge of acceptance and in doing so broadening the path for those who follow. Goodness … these are exciting times!

Welcome to O’Reilly’s ... where strangers are treated as friends, friends as family, and family as gold.

Life of O’Reilly’s Susan Lang-Lemckert discovers the natural beauty of O’Reilly’s Rainforest Guesthouse. I’ll be honest – a nature girl I’m not. The western end of Cavill Mall is about as rural as I get, and my rock chick boots were barely made for walking, let alone negotiating the tricky terrain of the McPherson Range. But the chance to spend a weekend at the idyllic O’Reilly’s Rainforest Guesthouse was just too good to miss, and proved so enjoyable that while I’ve no current plans to relocate from the metropolis to the hinterland, like Macarthur said – I shall return. The picturesque drive inland to O’Reilly’s reminded me why film directors love the Gold Coast – the variety of landscape and natural and built ‘locations’ is vast. So the experience began long before arriving at the destination … and isn’t that characteristic of the most memorable journeys? Set high on the western edge of World Heritagelisted Lamington National Park, O’Reilly’s not only offers some of the most commanding views of the

66

surrounding McPherson Range and beyond, but has been set out to optimise the tranquil sense of space and nature. The range of guest rooms provides something to suit all tastes and requirements – from guesthousestyle accommodation (some designed to maximise privacy by having no television or telephone connection to the room – perfect for distractible writers!) to the luxurious self-contained Mountain Villas, where we spent our visit. Between the comfort of the villa and the glorious views from the deck, we could have happily spent the whole time indoors, were there not so many wonderful activities at our doorstep. First was a bushwalk along one of the virtually infinite network of paths among the lush rainforest, where we delighted in seeing exotic plants, birds and creatures in their natural environs, and found ourselves at the Tree Top Walk – surely the best way

of all to view the magnificent surrounds. Back at the retreat we pored over the displays at The Discovery Centre – pictures, reference sheets and even specimens telling the wonderful story of nature – and looked longingly over the titles gracing the shelves of the Guests’ Library. Our batteries suitably recharged by coffee and cake from the Mountain Cafe, we returned to our villa where I got into The Spirit of O’Reillys – The World at our Feet, written by Peter O’Reilly, a homegrown historian who still presents regular slide shows about the history of the retreat for guests. The evening closing in, it was time to head to The Rainforest Dining Room, where large windows enhance the ambience by bringing the outdoors in, allowing diners to visually connect with nature from their tables. The menu offered a range of delectable fare that was perfectly complemented by a glass of wine from the nearby O’Reilly’s Canungra Valley

modern dentistry Vineyards, and the staff radiated a genuine, infectious warmth – nothing was too much trouble. Exemplifying the philosophy proudly displayed at Reception – Welcome to O’Reilly’s ... where strangers are treated as friends, friends as family, and family as gold – the lights were twice turned out while birthday cakes were brought in, the Head Waiter’s rousing strains of Happy Birthday soon joined by everyone in the room. No weekend away would be complete without a little pampering, and a highlight of my visit was a luxurious massage at the Lost World Spa, where it’s impossible not to relax. A tranquil sense of solitude abounds at the Spa – conducive not only to winding down, but for reinvigorating sluggish creative juices when one has a print deadline to meet. The treatment concluded with a calming cup of tea overlooking the glorious McPherson Range – perfect for contemplating the universe, the future, or simply the beauty and grandeur of nature. Keen to learn as much as possible about the O’Reilly’s experience, I then took a tour that included the state-of-the-art Lost World Conference Centre, and out to the Sunset Deck, where O’Reilly’s offers sundowners overlooking the breathtaking views of the range. This is also a popular spot for weddings, and it’s easy to see why – it’s not only a perfect venue, but also a backdrop photographers dream of. Next was the Birds of Prey flight show – a riveting free flight display of some of our majestic feathered friends – including owls, falcons and eagles – where as well as revelling in some of their aerial feats first-hand, we also learned more about their role in nature. With so much to see and do at O’Reilly’s, my all-too-brief introduction to this unspoiled paradise has merely whetted my appetite for more. In particular, I can’t wait to partake of some of the retreat’s more physical (and adrenalin-raising) activities like taking a flying-fox across Morans Creek and exploring Lamington National Park on a Segway Safari Tour. Maybe I’m more of a nature girl than I thought. As I said earlier – I shall return. I’ve even found some rock chick boots that are perfectly suited to rainforest terrain … >>

O’Reilly historical timeline 1911 O’Reilly boys select land on the McPherson Range to establish dairy farms. 1914 Stockyard Creek Track constructed as the main access to the mountain. First visitors to the area stayed in the O’Reilly slab huts. 1915 Lamington National Park is proclaimed. 1919 Herb, Luke, Mick and Bernard appointed as Honorary Rangers; Mick O’Reilly appointed Working Overseer of the park, becoming Queensland’s first National Park Ranger. 1925 Tom O’Reilly initiates building of the guesthouse. 1926 O’Reilly’s Guesthouse welcomes first guests for Easter. 1935 Laheys Ltd build road up the mountain to the edge of the National Park, reducing horseback journey to four miles. 1937 Bernard O’Reilly finds the lost Stinson aircraft and saves the lives of two survivors. 1947 Landslides close the road for four weeks, forcing a return to horses and the Stockyard Creek Track; regular bus service to guesthouse commences. 1955 St Joseph’s Church moved to the mountain from Gleneagle. 1967 O’Reilly’s connected to mains power. 1968 Land Rovers bought to cater for the needs of older guests; Green Mountains School opens. 1977 Large building project undertaken, including construction of reception area and office, lounge, games room and six family units. 1978 Radio telephone link replaces Duck Creek party line; first three kilometres of the road out from the Guesthouse sealed; inaugural O’Reilly’s Bird Week held. 1980 Duck Creek Road (4WD road) constructed. 1987 Tree Top Walk (the first ecotourism attraction of its kind in Australia) completed.

The Stinson Rescue The 1937 crash of a Stinson airliner in the McPherson Range and the subsequent rescue of its two survivors etched the name – and spirit – of O’Reilly’s into Australian folklore. The dense cloud cover from cyclonic weather off the Queensland coast simply swallowed the small craft – and its seven passengers – en route from Brisbane to Sydney. And despite numerous reported sightings of the Stinson as far as the Hawkesbury and beyond, it was feared to have crashed. Reasoning the craft’s path would have taken it across the McPherson Range, Bernard O’Reilly set off through the heavy rainforest to search for the wreckage and, seeing a burned tree from Mt Throakban, he knew he was on the right track. Closer to the site, Bernard was surprised by a ‘coo-ee’, which led him to the wrecked Stinson where survivors John Proud and Joe Binstead remained. A third survivor, Jim Westray, had already left in search of help, but tragically died from a fall in the unforgiving terrain. Bernard later returned with a party including a doctor, while local farmers assisted the rescue by cutting 16 km of tracks through the rainforest on the Lamington Plateau. Jim Westray and the four souls who’d perished in the crash were laid to rest nearby, and a statue depicting Bernard O’Reilly’s brave feat was erected at O’Reilly’s to mark the 60th anniversary of the heroic rescue. The story of Bernard’s rescue of the Stinson survivors is told in his book Green Mountains, which is available through the O’Reilly’s bookshop, or if you’d prefer a more personal experience, you can undertake a guided walk to the Stinson crash site from O’Reilly’s.

1991 Sealing of Lamington National Park Road completed. 1994 World Heritage status bestowed upon Lamington National Park.

History of O’Reilly’s

1999 O’Reilly’s Canungra Valley Vineyards opens.

The O’Reilly family’s century-old connection with the McPherson Range began in 1911, when six of the boys set off to claim selections for dairy farming. The work was punishing, with each selector required to clear the land, plant grass, and build fences and yards to establish their farms. Completion of The Stockyard Creek Track in 1914 saw the adjacent national park attracting increasing numbers of visitors, who’d stay at the O’Reillys’ huts and be taken by horseback to nearby attractions by family members. Thus, the seeds of a tourism and hospitality dynasty were sown. The guesthouse opened in 1926 and, while the accommodation it provided was much more comfortable than the earlier huts, the journey there – via the road from Canungra (completed in the mid-1930s), then on horses for the last six kilometres – was still an interesting experience. Modern conveniences gradually arrived – a road to the door in 1947; mains power in 1967; a radio-telephone link in 1978; and a 4WD track in 1980 being the major innovations, although O’Reilly’s still appears to meld so seamlessly into the rainforest, you’d never know it was there but for its reputation.

2000 O’Reilly’s largest building project (including 21 guest rooms, relaxation centre, and new staff accommodation) completed. 2006 80th anniversary of O’Reilly’s Guesthouse. 2007 Mountain Villas open heralding a new era in luxury accommodation for O’Reilly’s. 2008 Lost World Spa and Conference Centre open.

A heavenly holiday

Hawaii’s Halekulani really is a paradise on earth, as Susan Lang-Lemckert discovered. There’s nothing like setting the bar high. While The Academic is a seasoned traveller, I’d never ventured overseas before, and one day – for no identifiable reason – I became particularly disgruntled by the fact. A couple of hours and phone calls later, I informed The Academic I’d be taking a week’s holiday in Hawaii. And that while I’d love him to join me, should he decline, I’d be going anyway. He decided to come along … Never one to do things by halves, I booked our stay at the luxurious Halekulani … and our adventure – the first in a long while without our children – began. Nestled into the gleaming Pacific, Halekulani – meaning ‘house befitting heaven’ – is indeed an earthly paradise that evokes the tranquillity and luxury of days gone by. And between the plush but understated décor – blue, white and natural, with extensive use of teakwood throughout – and the breezy sense of space and quiet, we slipped into holiday mode as soon as we walked into Halekulani. Spread across more than five acres along the Waikiki oceanfront at Gray’s Beach, Halekulani never seemed crowded, even with the resort’s 453 luxurious rooms and suites close to capacity. And all of the guests – be they jubilant newlyweds (we frequently encountered bridal couples in the elevator), professionals seeking to re-charge or wide-eyed travellers like myself – radiate the sense of calm that permeates the whole resort. With so much available at Halekulani, the question was what should we try first? Relaxing poolside was our choice – and this was taken to a new level at Halekulani, where the pool not only overlooks Waikiki Beach, but also features a breathtaking mosaic orchid design of

more than one million Italian glass tiles in myriad shades of blue. With the glorious sunshine, comfy lounges and drinks service all there on the deck, only something very special could tempt me away … and something very special did. Off Gray’s Beach at the back of the resort, you can take surfing lessons with the Hans Hedemann Surf School, which is what I did – receiving expert instruction from the surfing great himself, who promptly dubbed me ‘the surfer girl from Down Under’. And although down under [the water] is precisely where I spent a good part of my lesson, I also managed to catch three waves on my own, conquering a lifelong fear of the water in the process. Under such circumstances, taking the odd gulp of seawater was inevitable and not particularly pleasant, but I later learned that Gray’s Beach is renowned by Hawaiians for its healing waters – kawehewehe – meaning ‘the removal’. And on that day, the wheeze I’d been unable to shake before leaving home disappeared … so needless to say a visit to Gray’s Beach figured in our schedule every day after that. All manner of mouth-watering cuisine can be enjoyed at Halekulani’s salles á manger – so we knew we were in for a gastronomic treat. The Academic’s favourite was the Veranda, which has turned afternoon tea into an art form, offering several exclusive Halekulani blends of tea along with the more traditional varieties, and a delicious array of sweet and savoury treats to choose from. Looking on to a grassed courtyard, the Veranda is the perfect place to pause and reflect, or just to watch the world go by. The length of our stay gave us the chance to sample the resort’s three restaurants – all different in style, and each with a unique specialty. Breakfast at House Without A Key was magical – the gentle breeze sweeping in from the ocean, >>

and more delicious choices available than we could possibly try in just one visit … or maybe even two. But the highlight for us was the freshly squeezed breakfast juices, which raised yet another bar, veritably redefining the term ‘juice’. Later in our stay we also enjoyed dinner at House Without a Key while delighting in the resort’s nightly entertainment – a sunset performance of authentic Hawaiian music and traditional hula dancing, the darkening Pacific providing a dramatic backdrop. The elegant Orchids, Halekulani’s other indoor/ outdoor oceanview restaurant, also offers a superb dining experience, and is open for dinner nightly, and breakfast and lunch Monday to Saturday. But it’s best known for its Sunday brunch, which has become something of an institution, and is frequently booked out well in advance. Our most memorable dinner was taken at La Mer, Halekulani’s award-winning Neoclassic French restaurant, which offers intimate ambience with ocean views and delectable fare, including a degustation menu. Complemented with winepairing and a passionate introduction to each glass from the Head Waiter, this was nothing short of divine and, watching the moonlit ocean from our table, we agreed that this experience was something we’d always remember. Looking to relax while the night was still young, we called into Lewers Lounge for a nightcap and to enjoy the laid-back mood of the in-house entertainer’s light jazz and contemporary music … the perfect end to a perfect evening.

The next day offered time for some pampering at SpaHalekulani, which is unique in that it incorporates healing traditions of Hawaii, Asia and the South Pacific into its beauty and relaxation treatments. I was indulged with a luxurious facial that, much to my delight, left me looking as rejuvenated as I was beginning to feel after a few days at this wonderful place. The session concluded with a calming cup of tea taken on the spa’s lanai, looking across to the ocean, which left me wishing I’d never have to leave Halekulani. As you might have guessed, time ran out before we could try everything Halekulani has to offer, so first on my list for next time is to take the ‘back of house’ tour to see how the resort’s employees bring everything together so seamlessly. The dedication of Halekulani staff is evident in the positivity that abounds through the resort, and is backed up by the extremely low staff turnover – about 15 per cent of the employees have served at the [refurbished] resort since it opened in 1984. Indeed, the lady who escorted us to our suite on arrival – another touch that sets Halekulani apart – noted that, with ‘only’ nine years’ service under her belt, ‘I’m only a baby’. So with four teenaged babies of my own waiting patiently (well, maybe not patiently!) for me at home, I bade a wistful farewell to Halekulani at the end of an unforgettable, and refreshing, mini-break. I can’t wait to do it again … and I’m sure I can hear Halekulani calling me. The bar’s been set very high, but that’s okay. I like it there.

If you’re wanting to venture further than the resort, you may like to consider:

Pearl Harbour Visitor Center and Arizona Memorial This absorbing display of artefacts, exhibits, photographs and newsreel footage documenting the events that drew the United States into World War II is a must-see for any visitor to Hawaii.

Ko Olina Golf Club With exceptional water features on many holes and no parallel fairways, the Ko Olina Golf Club offers golf enthusiasts a challenging 18-hole championship course.

First Friday On the first Friday of every month, the art galleries, restaurants, bars and merchants in Honolulu’s Chinatown open their doors for free entertainment and late-night exhibitions.

Hawaii International Film Festival Specialising in films from Asia, the Pacific Rim and North America, the annual Hawaii International Film Festival is a statewide event presented each October by Louis Vuitton Hawaii. As well as feature films, documentaries and short films, the festival presents seminars, workshops, special award presentations and receptions.

Shangri La Tour ‘Shangri La’ – one of Hawaii’s most architecturally significant houses, built overlooking the Pacific Ocean and Diamond Head by Doris Duke in the 1930s – is open for tours.

Ala Moana Center With 290 stores and close to 70 dining options, Ala Moana Center is not only Hawaii’s premier shopping, entertainment and dining destination, but is also the largest outdoor shopping centre in the world.

Unveiling Vietnam Patsy and Bill Rowe spent a very memorable few days in Vietnam during their recent cruise. There are 25 million bicycles in Vietnam, four million of them in Saigon, so I guess the fact I avoided being skittled five times, shows I’m either more nimble on my feet than I thought, or the Vietnamese have been warned it’s not good for the tourist industry to skittle foreigners. Having managed to ‘hop, skip and jump’ to avoid bikes which travel five or six abreast at terrifying speeds (while riders chat animatedly on their mobile phones) you need to remind yourself of the local saying: ‘Drivers need a good horn, good brakes and good luck!’ Officially, cars drive on the right side of the road, however they also drive in the

74

middle and on the footpath so it’s understandable the locals aren’t as lucky as the tourists, with 12,000 being killed annually on the roads. Speaking of horns, these are essential to Vietnamese drivers who are nominally supposed to blow their horns only on passing, but since everyone is passing, crossing over someone else, (or cutting off them off), horns are blown continually. Bikes are only permitted to have two adults, but as many children as they can squeeze on. We saw several bikes scooting past with as many as three tiny children and two adults all happily balanced on one bicycle, in one case with a small child perched

on the handle bars clutching a brown hen! The locals like to describe the traffic as ‘organised chaos’ but after a couple of days of dodging cars, motor bikes and bicycles criss-crossing one another and turning without signalling, I could see the ‘chaos,’ but failed to identify which part of it was ‘organised.’ When we staggered off the bus, delighted to have arrived in one piece, we headed for a coffee. My back has never been quite the same since I climbed down the pyramid in Egypt last year but crouching down at a table 40 centimetres from the ground to perch precariously on the wee stool

Hyatt Regency Danang Resort and Spa

didn’t do it much good. The coffee, served in tiny glasses, was excellent and had it not been for the fact I feared I wouldn’t be able to get up if I perched much longer, we’d have stayed for a second cup. The cruise which had brought us to Vietnam left from Hong Kong and wound its leisurely way to Singapore stopping first at Vietnam, then Cambodia and Thailand. We travelled down the China Sea coastline in what I regarded as ‘rough’ weather (well, half the dining room was empty) but which Bill (a sailor with five Hobart yacht races under his belt) assured me wasn’t rough at all, and since we were on holiday I thought it best not to quibble (I still think it was rough). Our first port was Halang Bay, one of the world’s natural wonders featuring over one thousand awesome limestone karsts and islands with coral reefs and beautiful grottos and caves with hidden ponds and extraordinary stone formations. We then went on to Da Nang where we were met by Roger Baldwin, Director of Sales & Marketing, at the fabulous new Hyatt Regency Danang Resort and Spa. This is the first international five-star resort in the area and is so stunning Bill and I are already planning to return. We lunched in a superb

restaurant, decorated in soft taupe and café au lait, and it was an effort to get up and return to the ship. The hotel is about half an hour from the ancient capital of Hoi, 20 minutes south of Da Nang which is a world heritage UNESCO site and worth a visit.

… a fascinating glimpse of an amazing country and one we’ll return to very soon … Everywhere we went we were stunned at the sight of wedding after wedding taking place. It seems that couples were anxious to marry before the New Year when they get two weeks holiday and can have a longer honeymoon. Restaurants do as many as four weddings a night with the ceremony lasting at most two hours before the bridal group adjourns to a Karaoke bar! We saw brides standing

outside restaurants waiting for the previous bride to leave the restaurant. One evening we had the most interesting dinner at Cabot Lodge, the home of Henry Cabot Lodge when he was Ambassador to the United States. Cabot Lodge is now owned by a Vietnamese businessman, whose father was delighted to show us around. We were greeted by pretty young girls wearing the national dress, Aodai, serving champagne and canapés before dinner where the decoration almost outshone the meal. When I next invite friends for drinks, I intend to copy the empty egg shell with a hole cut at the end to hold a flower. If I fail with that, I’ll try the dainty bite-size cucumber cut in a crown shape and filled with caviar. We were interested to learn that there are laws prohibiting gambling for the Vietnamese (indeed, they can be gaoled if caught) with the result that casinos are full of foreign tourists. There’s always a way around laws and the Vietnamese have already found one. Those who wish to gamble and can afford it, go ‘next door’ to Cambodia! Our few days provided a fascinating glimpse of an amazing country and one we’ll return to very soon, hopefully to the Hyatt!

Lead the way The Ferrari California – cleaner, greener and leaner than many of its contemporaries. words Chris Nixon

If you are not an enthusiast it’s unlikely you have noticed we’re in one of the most exciting eras since the invention of the motor car. Cars that do not use fossil fuel and that generate their own ‘fuel’ on-board to emit nothing more harmful than water vapour from the exhaust pipe are a long way down the road, but the constant pressure to make leaner, greener vehicles is already delivering big benefits to drivers. Forty years ago no-one worried about the fuel consumption of their cars, which in any case were fairly economical. But in the last decades of the century, makers started loading

78

their cars with more power, more comfort, more safety and more convenience. Vehicle weights and, therefore, the amount of petrol needed to drag them along, accompanied by toxic carbon dioxide exhaust emissions, skyrocketed just as we realised that oil was a finite resource. Combine that reality with the pressures of climate change – whether you believe in it, or not – and you have the ingredients for the rapid progress we are enjoying now. One of the happiest outcomes of this new era of enforced economy is that it is not going to drive us into puny, dreary economy cars. We can have our cake and eat it too.

According to the sports car maker Ferrari, never known for its impecuniosity, it’s tiramisu all the way to 300 kmh and beyond. Its example is the Ferrari California fitted with an option called HELE. The acronym stands for High Emotion, Low Emissions; think low-fat tiramisu. The California, a roadster with a folding hardtop instead of a rag-top, is the cheapest model in the Ferrari Australian range, with a price of $459,650 plus on-roads. It’s peculiar that something so worthwhile as HELE is an option at all, let alone one that asks such a small extra payment of $2750 – in the Ferrari

context, as cheap as ordering optional chrome trim for the ashtray. Since the majority of us can’t afford a California, this story is about what Ferrari, an Italian company that built its reputation on speed without much consideration of the overall cost, is doing to maintain its relevance. HELE aims to increase efficiency without diminishing enjoyment. It optimises engine and gearbox to reduce the California’s fuel consumption and CO2 exhaust emissions to levels similar to some family cars. With HELE, combined city-highway petrol consumption of the 4.3 litre V8 is reduced from 13.1 litres per 100 kms to 11.5 (that’s almost 25 miles per gallon). CO2 falls from 299 grams per kilometre to 270. How does it achieve this? The engine switches off automatically when you stop. It remains in standby mode, its airconditioning, audio and other functions still running, and re-starts when the accelerator is pushed. The fuel-savings on a daily commute are easy to imagine. Reasoning that cooling needs are determined by road speed, the speed of the electric radiator

fans is computer-controlled, so no more power is consumed than necessary. The motors are lowfriction type. Electric fuel pumps usually work at constant flow regardless of the varying thirst of the engine at different speeds; HELE supplies only the precise amount, again saving power. It’s the same story with the alternator and air-conditioning, which do no more work than absolutely necessary. The seven-speed, twin-clutch gearbox when in automatic mode learns the patterns of the driver, always choosing the appropriate ratio for the engine load. Ferrari claims these refinements free up to 25 Newtonmetres of extra torque – pulling power – which means the engine doesn’t have to work as hard and therefore uses less petrol and pushes less toxic gas out of the exhaust pipe. On the road, these improvements prove they have not blunted the California’s character; they’re imperceptible to the driver. It’s California by name and nature – laid-back or wild, whichever you want it to be. This would be a very easy Ferrari to live with every day.

Finally, It’s been found A law firm providing practical & tailored advice, supported by extensive & diverse experience in Law, Governance and Management.

The cabin is sumptuous in the Italian style and well-equipped; and from there you can command the California to tootle tamely to the corner store or leap like a, er ... Prancing Horse, from rest to 100 kmh in less than four seconds and on to a top speed of 310 kmh. While there’s no compromise about this Ferrari, it’s fair to say it’s a good all-rounder. Not low and super-sporty like the 458 Italia, or V12powerful and ultra-fast like the FF. HELE points to the direction of all future Ferraris, but it’s not only a product of direct green vehicle technologies. The factory has also cleaned itself up, so emissions savings start at the source. At Maranello in Italy, the factory roof carries solar electricity generators and cooling ponds to reduce air-conditioning needs. Rainwater is collected for use. The buildings are sited to catch more natural light and interior gardens are used to naturally control humidity. Ferrari demonstrates that the motor industry, so often criticised as one of the main creators of pollution, is leading the way to a new age of greener transportation.

With a number of brands launching new models in the coming months, 2012 looks set to be a stellar year for car enthusiasts. words Chris Nixon

Limited edition With a name like Zagato, you know this is going to be a fast Italian. Well-heeled Aston Martin enthusiasts are already clamouring for one of the 150 Zagato V12 coupes to be released for sale after its debut at the recent Geneva motor show. Zagato and Aston go way back to a legendary racing model named the DB4GT Zagato. But after a successful racing launch last year this Zagato is going into limited series production. A sample car is expected to tour Australian showrooms in the coming months, but buyers will likely need more than half a million dollars when deliveries start late this year.

Classy Continental The launch of a modern-day Bentley Continental in 2003 brought the historic British company unprecedented sales success. More than 50,000 have been bought worldwide, including a generous number in Australia, when once Bentleys sold in relative handfuls. Now the Continental is ready for a second surge, with a V8 engine to accompany the existing W12. The V8 delivers 373 kiloWatts while rushing in an appropriately stately manner to a top speed of 303 kmh. Yet it is more economical and lighter to drive than the W12. Local deliveries start later this year.

Code name 991 The more things change at Porsche, the more they stay the same. The maker has just launched an all-new 911 Carrera coupe in Australia, codenamed 991 to succeed the 997. It looks much the same as the elegant classic they brought out almost 50 years ago, albeit sleeker and much faster. It’s longer by 100 mm than the 997, yet lighter and employs a smaller motor, now 3.4 litres instead of 3.6. Prices start at $229,900, which is inexpensive compared to many of its rivals. The Cabriolet lands in April. Meanwhile Porsche is teasing with photos of a fresh Boxster roadster and an all-new SUV named Macan.

Sports performer The gorgeous Scirocco R finally has brought some sexiness to the Volkswagen range. Scirocco is a long-established nameplate in Europe, but this is the first model to be sold here and the wait has been worthwhile. The two-door coupe is based on the Golf and uses a 188 kW turbo engine taken in slightly detuned form from the Golf R. It’s sufficient to fire the Scirocco R from standstill to 100 kmh in a very sporty 6.2 seconds. It’s an excellent performer in everyday use or as a weekend track play-racer. Despite having only two doors and a low roof, the Scirocco R will take four people and a reasonable luggage load. Prices are $47,490 for the manual and $49,990 for an automatic DSG gearbox.

Triple treat Possibly the world’s most important prestige sedan, the BMW 3 Series, has landed in Australia with an all-new range. The 3 Series is the favourite of executives the world over for its combination of compact size, sporty character and affordability. The launch will re-start the cycle of extra variants over coming months and years, but initially buyers are offered a 320D ($60,900), 328i ($66,900) and 335i ($91,900). In May, BMW will add a 320i for $57,600 and a 318D for an extraordinary $56,400. As is customary with major new models these days, the 3 Series is said to deliver more of everything – refinement, economy and value. The 320i has fuel consumption below 7.0 litres per 100 kms, meaning it will attract Federal Government tax concessions that benefit its price and give buyers a margin to add options.

Twice the power Two more variants of the Mercedes-Benz SLK roadster come from opposite ends of the performance spectrum. Although the SLK250 Blue EFFICIENCY is no slouch with a 150 kW turbo motor, it won’t see the mighty SLK55 AMG for dust. The SLK250 Blue EFFICIENCY is priced from $91,900, while the SLK55 AMG with more than twice the power from its V8 costs $155,000. Mercedes says that’s a whopping $24,000 less than the model it replaced. The V8 has very impressive fuel consumption of 8.5 litres per 100 kms and exhaust emissions of 197 grams per kilometre, said to make it the cleanest V8 convertible for sale in Australia.

grand motors TOYOTA Originating from humble beginnings, as a service station located next to the Grand Hotel in Labrador in the 1950’s, Grand Motors Toyota is now one of the oldest businesses on the Gold Coast. In 1963 Grand Motors became a Toyota dealership and relocated to Southport, to what was then considered to be the heart of the Gold Coast.

Kent Ferguson General Sales Manager

This dealership has been operating successfully since then and has been offering customers the ‘oh what a grand feeling’ for more than 40 years. Grand Motors Toyota has developed in line with the changes that have taken place on the Gold Coast over the years and now boasts Queensland’s largest Toyota showroom. The modern showroom houses the biggest selection of new Toyota vehicles. Clients can enjoy a freshly made cappuccino in the customer lounge while getting a great deal on a car, or getting a service on a new or used car. The dealership also has a specialised fleet team for all your business needs, no matter how big or small they may be. As well as providing expert advice on the purchase of new vehicles, the professional used car team at Grand Motors Toyota offers a large selection of quality tested used Toyota and non-Toyota vehicles, all coming with a 3-year or 60,000km warranty and a 12-month roadside assist. Grand Motors’ two service locations and extended service hours make it simple and convenient to get your car serviced. The Southport site is open from 7am until 11.30pm weekdays and the Harbourtown site is open from 7am until 5pm weekdays and Saturdays until 12 noon. Clients also have the convenience of using a loan car or the courtesy bus while their vehicle is being serviced.

Boating & beyond The 2012 Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show has a supercharged program to enthral, delight and excite.

The 2012 Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show (SCIBS) is just around the corner, and this year the program is bursting with world-firsts, international and national launches and an array of activities for all ages and appetites. With the theme ‘Boating and Beyond’, the 2012 event will run from 24-27 May and aims to stake its position as the international showcase of innovation. Now in its 24th year, the show boasts a beefed up retinue of exhibitors and added extras to ignite your imagination. Even if you’re not in the market for a new boat – from kayak, tinnie, RIB and jet-ski to day boat or cruiser – an entire world of marine lifestyle will be showcased this year. There are new and novel gizmos, gadgets and gear, including performance and stylish casual apparel from Gill, Musto and Sperry and polarised sunglasses from BarzOptics, including the new ‘floater’ model for sailors, surfers, swimmers and now, kids, plus the new generation of cleaner, greener engines, high-tech flotation, safety and navigation equipment. In the motor yacht segment, there are launches from Horizon, Princess, Prestige, Maritimo, Mustang, Palm Beach Motor Yachts, Integrity, Clipper, Outer Reef Yachts, Grand Banks, Riviera and more. Sailing too is well represented, with a series of ‘firsts’ from some of the major players, including Beneteau, Jeanneau and more yet to confirm. For the fishing and family-weekend market, Arvor is launching its ‘Weekender’ model, 7m of comfort and safety. Sealegs will have its latest amphibious craft, now complete with half-cabin, on show and there are RIBS and ski boats for all skill levels and applications. In the ever-popular catamaran arena, Seawind is set to impress with its latest Seawind 100 XL2

and a revolutionary new concept, still under wraps, while other marques on display include Catana and Leopard. The PWC (personal watercraft) on show will excite the young and young at heart, with the official launch of the 2012 range of Yamaha’s redesigned FX series, including the Yamaha SuperJet – the ideal craft for riders who crave a challenging and exciting ‘stand up’ ride. For the voyeurs and serious connoisseurs, there is plenty to tantalise and tempt. As well as the massive Horizon AquaCat, the 81-foot economical cruising catamaran, and the sleek, black-hulled day boat by VanDutch, normally at home in St Tropez, there’s the covetable, Italian-built Falcon 90 from Norseman which will treat visitors to a glimpse of the multi-million dollar, megayacht lifestyle. And that’s the beauty of the boat show. No matter what your interest or inclination, there’s something to suit – or in the case of this year’s event, there is a myriad of things you have never even dreamt of. For 2012, the entertainment has been boosted to overdrive, with awesome launches in the form of Seabreacher X – the latest and most advanced shark-shaped submersible watercraft that propels itself clear out of the water. Boasting a 260hp supercharged engine, the Seabreacher X can hit a top speed of 43 Knots (80km/h) on the surface and 22 Knots (40 km/h) below. For the first time in Australia, visitors will be able to marvel at the gravity-defying JetLev R200, the coolest way to hit the waves! Drawing inspiration from the James Bond flick Thunderball, the JetLev is winning devotees around the world since its US launch last year. Shooting 30ft (9m) in the air with just a hose linking it to the water, the JetLev will be on display throughout the show. >>

Falcon 90 ‘Norseman’

For those who want to admire the views, above and below the water, there’s the Ego, ‘compact semi-submarine’ from Korea, heralded as the most environmentally-friendly and commercially viable concept of its kind. The developers are looking for international distributors, so Sanctuary Cove could be the place for tourism operators or researchers to get on board! Once again this year, the ladies have the chance to don their finest and take to the water, with the glamorous ‘High Tea on the High Seas’ cruises as part of the Women on Water program. Guests will be treated to a superb combination of light lunch, champagne, fashion and fine jewellery on cruises on the Coomera River, as well as being spoilt with pampering sessions, superb gift bags and prizes.

Tickets go on sale from 1 April, so register your interest now at boatshow@sanctuarycove.com Also for the ‘best mates’, there will be cooking onboard your boat hosted by Channel Seven’s My Kitchen Rules, plus interiors seminars and handson practical experiences such as Skipper Training. Last year’s special guest, Carla Demaria, President of Monte Carlo Yachts and Board Member of Beneteau, was enthusiastic with her praise of the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show. Having attended scores of events over her 30 years in the industry, she observed that Sanctuary Cove is unique and certainly among the best in the world. “It is the ideal venue to present the pleasures of boating and all the ways people can enjoy the

water. It is a privilege to see such an exhibition of quality and diversity in such a beautiful scene,” she said. Don Jones, CEO of Marine Queensland, echoes those sentiments. “Sanctuary Cove is the ideal location to showcase to the local, national and international community, customers and potential customers what the recreational marine lifestyle has to offer and the many options available to access that lifestyle in a fantastic village atmosphere,” Don said. With too much on offer to capture in one story, visitors will find the all-new show great value and exceptional entertainment. Make it your ‘must-do’ this year. Swing shift

Australia’s Karrie Webb is determined to be a dominant force in the world of women’s golf for many years to come. words Paul Prendergast photography Limetree Events

Ball after ball, hour after hour, Karrie Webb toiled away in growing heat on the range under the watchful eye of her long-time mentor, Ian Triggs. After a session that lasted the length of a round of golf, it was off to the practice green to work on her putting for over an hour. This was Webb’s first session of the year in early January as she prepared for her 17th season on the LPGA Tour. She was back a few days later, this time starting what was to be a five-hour session at noon in the blazing Queensland sun. It’s a remarkable insight into the work ethic and dedication of the woman who has won seven Major Championships, and over 50 tournaments around the world, since turning professional in 1994. After her off-season break where she admits to doing ‘nothing’, Karrie has embarked on a campaign to improve not only her golf swing but changes in her body to support the vision that she and Ian have for her game into the future. “‘I’ve been working on my fitness for the past ten years and lately I’ve been focusing on the weaknesses so that with the changes I’m making now, my body is stable enough to do it,” she explained. “It may not look it but we’ve made some significant changes in my swing. We started that in late October last year because I felt that even though I won twice, it was probably the poorest ball striking year of my career. “I’d gotten into some bad habits which you don’t see until it’s too far gone, so we thought we’d see most of the year out then make the changes before I started doing a lot of work in January (for the new season).” Asked to elaborate on what some of the changes are brought a broad grin to Karrie’s face. “I don’t know if you have enough tape!” she laughed. “Lots of little things, some things I haven’t ever done in my life before. It’s only early days so it’s going to be a work in progress.”

98

Karrie’s pursuit of further goals as she heads to the ‘back nine’ of her career have lead her to make some difficult but necessary changes to her early season schedule this year. To enable her to be fresh for the season’s first Major Championship at the Kraft Nabisco Championship in late March, Karrie took the tough decision to skip the RACV Ladies Masters on the Gold Coast. “It’s disappointing to miss the RACV Ladies Masters but it’s all around the scheduling,” she explained. “My body doesn’t love four tournaments

The evidence of her desire to continue to be a dominant force in the game certainly shone through when talking to Karrie and also Ian. There was a quiet determination and confidence in her voice when discussing the future and the chance to continue to build on her already lofty stature in the sport. “I’d love to think that I’ve got another good few years yet, where I’m one of the top handful of players in the world consistently,” she said. “I think I can get my name on the leaderboard on

in a row and last year, I played four in a row, had a couple of weeks off then played three in a row. “By the time I got to Nabisco, I was exhausted and I don’t have too many more of those [the Majors] left,” she said. “I’m closer to the end of my career than at the start so I don’t want to waste those opportunities.”

any given week but it’s about doing it consistently, where people know that if it’s there, it’s not going to go away. “If I can get these changes sorted and then learn to trust them on the golf course, I really believe I can have that run or I wouldn’t be playing. I’m going to work hard to try to achieve that.”

Karrie’s Olympic spirit Karrie recently took some time out of her busy schedule to support a fellow Australian – beach volleyball champion Natalie Cook – by generously agreeing to have a round of golf with her auctioned off for the Natalie Cook Olympic Fundraising Campaign. Sanctuary Cove residents Anne and Robert Hill were the successful bidders and spent a very enjoyable day on The Palms golf course at Sanctuary Cove with Karrie and Natalie, who is also a keen golfer. A gold medallist at the Sydney Olympics in 2000, Natalie is hoping to make it to a record fifth Olympic games later this year. We wish her well in her London campaign – follow Natalie on www.teamnat.com.au

Well balanced Local business owners are creating a quality work life balance at Sanctuary Cove.

Dr Vineel Singh

Andrew Payne

100

Faced with the reality that Australians work the longest hours in the developed world, Dr Vineel Singh decided that was the catalyst he needed to make a lifestyle change. Late last year he and his family packed up their family home and made the move from Melbourne to set up a dental practice at Sanctuary Cove. “Ultimately the decision was inspired by a desire for a better work life balance,” Vineel said. “As soon as we discovered what Sanctuary Cove had to offer I knew this is where we wanted to be.” Dr Singh is just one of an increasing number of companies realising the benefits of doing business in a lifestyle location such as Sanctuary Cove. From boutique shops to event planners, lawyers, boat hire companies and traffic management services – The Marine Village welcomed more than a dozen new commercial tenants on leases ranging from 54 square metres to expansive 220 square metre office spaces during the 2011 calendar year. Andrew Payne, Managing Director of Limetree Events, believes The Marine Village is an ideal place for a business due to its convenient location between Brisbane and the Gold Coast, relaxed village vibe, mix of onsite facilities and free parking for visitors and clients. “As an international event management company based at Sanctuary Cove it is also beneficial having facilities like Hyatt Regency Sanctuary Cove, two championship golf courses, first class sport and recreation facilities, and unique village and marine spaces to utilise for events,” he said. Andrew believes the location and facilities on offer at Sanctuary Cove are unrivalled on the Gold Coast. “Working at Sanctuary Cove hardly feels like work at all,” he said. John Hughes, General Manager Sales Mulpha Sanctuary Cove (Developments) Pty Limited, said there are some real commercial and practical benefits in basing a business within The Marine Village. “Sanctuary Cove boasts a strong population of residents who are supportive of local business as well as consistently high numbers of visitors coming through the village which provides access to an entirely different market,” he said. “Sanctuary Cove offers the unique ability to live and work in the same location which ultimately improves your work life balance.”

Built to last

This unique Sanctuary Cove home combines traditional building methods with modern day conveniences.

After having a residence in Sanctuary Cove for more than 15 years, Terry Hopley Jr knew exactly what he was looking for when it came to building a new mansion from scratch. “I began with the most important choice of all – the three P’s. That’s position, position, position,” explains Terry. “My block needed to be large and facing north on to a wide expanse of water as I wanted a deepwater jetty. But at the same time I wanted privacy.” That narrowed his choice but Terry Jr found the perfect location at 2088 The Circle. It met

102

all his requirements, including facing a small private island that gave him the added seclusion he wanted. Next came the construction. “My family have other homes in Europe which are around 200 years old – one of them is nearly 500 years old – and they are all in perfect condition,” he said. “I wanted my house to also still look perfect 200 years from now and I am sure it will.” Terry had his home built using traditional

European methods, with deep foundations and all walls in concrete or cavity work. This house won’t be going anywhere for a long time. The same traditional look is carried through to the interior with natural stone and polished wood floors and carpentry and soft unobtrusive carpeting upstairs. Leading designer Tonie Robertson was brought in to supply the ‘wow’ factor to the spacious living areas. The massive kitchen is finished in an eyecatching turquoise natural stone, complete with

European fittings, while the formal area comes to life in winter with an elaborate gas-fire in the centre of the main lounge. Furniture in the family room is manufactured from restored railway sleepers – perfect when you have a family of four children – while the formal lounge is complemented by natural leather sofas from Robertson’s Ralph Lauren range. A second large drawing room provides plenty of space for the children to relax with friends when they are not enjoying the fully-equipped media room or the small gymnasium. The downstairs study has lots of room for a partner-sized desk, and antique cabinets, while still leaving space for a snooker table. >>

103

“I want my house to still look perfect 200 years from now and I am sure it will.” – T erry H ople y J r

The outside area boasts a beautifully designed pool, a patio complete with a real log fire for chilly winter evenings and a jetty that will comfortably take a 60 foot vessel. Year-round water supply comes from a massive underground tank, conveniently located beneath the front lawn. The garage comfortably accommodates four cars and two buggies while the laundry is big enough to suit the requirements of a large family.

104

The spaciousness of this very special home is carried to the upper floor where the master suite, complete with its own terrace, is larger than some apartments. The bathroom boasts an enormous freestanding European tub, his and hers vanity units, and separate areas for the shower and toilet. All five bedrooms have en-suite facilities and each has its own walk-in dressing room.

“I wanted a large family home where the children could enjoy acres of space without the fear of damaging delicate fittings and surfaces. Yet at the same time we wanted style and elegance,” said Terry. “I am pleased to say we achieved both.” Sadly, having built the ‘perfect’ house, Terry and his family have now relocated to the UK which means the home will soon have a proud new owner.

TIMBER SHUTTERS & BLINDS

Number one Offering sophisticated living in the heart of Brisbane’s CBD, No. 1 Scott Street is a striking fusion of contemporary style and classic architecture. words Rhonda Oxnam

The invite read ‘experience a unique design collaboration at Brisbane’s most prestigious new address’ so I was expecting something special. And the amazing Scott Street apartment I inspected certainly lived up to those expectations. From the moment I stepped out of the lift there was only one thing running through my mind – I want it. I want to soak in the elegant freestanding bathtub and watch the traffic flow across the Story Bridge. I want to kick back on the perfectly positioned love-seat and gaze at the glittering city lights. I want to sit down at the grand piano and belt out a tune … Ok maybe I don’t really want to do that, but it would be nice to know I could if I wanted to! And that’s the best thing about this amazing 430 square metre, full floor apartment – the possibilities are endless, and the entire space is a sophisticated fusion of casual living and luxurious style. There’s the built-in barbecue; the glass enclosed balcony (which, incidentally, is bigger than many suburban backyards); the study nook; the wine cellar; and the aforementioned bathtub which sits in front of one of the many floor-to-ceiling windows. Which brings me to another salient point … the views. From every window, in every room of the home, the city of Brisbane is laid out before you – the bridge, the river, the CBD, even the pub down the road. 360 degrees, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Always changing, always amazing, always there. Conveniently located in the heart of Kangaroo Point, the building itself combines classical style with contemporary influences. The dramatic landmark façade and clean, sharp lines are the work of Jackson Teece Architecture, whose careful selection of timber, natural stone, glass and stainless steel finishes has created a modern form with ‘a sinuous lack of ninety-degree corners’. The firm was awarded the Job & Froud Award for Residential Architecture: Multiple Housing at the 2011 Queensland Architecture Awards, and it is easy to see why. Each aspect of the design has been carefully thought out to make the most of the location, and maximise the space. There are ten full-floor apartments (including the one I viewed on Level 7), a three-level villa and a two-level penthouse. >>

While the architects have done a magnificent job on the structure, so to have Deka Designs, who collaborated with internationally renowned jeweller John Calleija in the decorating of this particular apartment. Every piece has been carefully thought out, beautifully crafted and perfectly positioned. The Deka Design team, comprising of Finnishborn Lasse and Helena Kinnunen and their daughter Nora, use traditional craft methods to design and manufacture furniture with each item designed in-house and individually hand-crafted in Brisbane. Much of the occasional furniture on show is made from timber, adding warmth and softening the sleek lines of the bigger pieces, while the neutral palette which has been used throughout allows the view to remain the focal point. John Calleija, award-winning designer of Calleija Jewellers, has also added his own dimension to the dĂŠcor. A selection of photographs of his stunning designs have been blown up onto larges canvasses and displayed around the apartment, literally making artworks out of his works of art. The perfect trilogy of architectural style, innovative interior design and landmark position, No. 1 Scott Street is worth every cent of its multimillion dollar price tag. And although, realistically, I will never be able to call this particular apartment home, it is nice to know I could if I wanted to!

attitude

Perfect match Bryan Matthews is a study in perfection.

I avoid those Venus/Mars type books. It’s not that they simply don’t interest me very much; it’s more of a survival instinct: I just don’t want to wade into a dinner conversation and offend people (in this case, by ‘people’ I actually mean women). It is with trepidation, therefore, that I stick my nose into the messy business of relationships. I’m not a huge lover of research – in that most of it either confirms the mind-numbingly obvious or tells us stuff we don’t really need to know – but I couldn’t let a recent survey pass without comment. Yes, apparently the majority of you ladies believe that the perfect man doesn’t exist. In fact, most women rank their partner as ‘only 69 per cent perfect’. Confronted by an online survey or a spotty student with a clipboard, you forget your Pitt/ Clooney fantasies and zero in on stuff which, let’s be honest, us blokes think really shouldn’t matter. Included in a list of 20 common shortfalls are failing to make an effort with their partner’s friends, criticising their driving and our inability to multi-task (nonsense, I’m writing this while drinking a martini and eating a stack of Pringles). The survey said that for a quarter of women ‘dodgy dancing’ is forgivable; well thanks for that ladies. So does that mean 75 per cent of you really hold that against us? Give us a break. Unsurprisingly at the top of the hissy-fit parade is the fact that four out of five women are still hung up on the toilet seat ‘up or down’ rubbish. This is a domestic conundrum which has always fascinated me only because I’d like to know how and why, in the first place, it was ordained that women somehow are entitled to pole position? Surely, we’ve got as much right to insist that you put the seat ‘back up’ as you have to assume it’s our duty to put it ‘back down’? Frankly, I think there’s a degree of envy at play. One of the best things about being a bloke is going to the theatre or a stadium and not having to queue for the loo. You hate us for that don’t you? As it happens, the loo seat impasse has resolved itself in our home – simply because I’m getting to the age when I’ll use any excuse for a sit-down. Dissatisfaction with our commitment to personal grooming remains a bug-bear. Leaving out nail clippings appears to be a significant no-no (what,

120

even on our side of the bed?). Whatever happened to credit where it’s due? Imagine the costs involved if both partners decided that they needed regular professional manicures or pedicures. A husband sits quietly tending his toes – just to save some extra cash for the kids’ college educations – and then gets grief about his family-first, cost-efficient nail treatment. How is that fair? Even so – and to demonstrate that I’m an even-handed metrosexual – I will concede the point the study raised with respect to ‘using her toothbrush’ (especially if it’s employed in the bargain home pedicure).

… the suggestion that the perfect man doesn’t exist is undermined by one simple fact.

Interestingly, I’ve actually stepped up my personal grooming regimen of late as I have sadly reached the age where a lot of my hair seems to have tired of the million-dollar view from my head. Rather than journey onwards and upwards, thousands of rebellious follicles have decided to move south to seedier environs. Hence, I recently became the proud owner of my first nose and ear hair trimmer. A snip at $12.50 in Coles. Failing to finish jobs around the house is a significant bone of contention. In my defence, I rarely start one. I’m not a handy-man and I believe I am the first person in medical history to be officially diagnosed as Bunnings-phobic, I get a panic attack just driving past the one nearest to our home. My carefully mapped-out safe routes up and down the Gold Coast are soon to be further compromised by the huge new Bunnings they’re building at Coomera; from what I can see, it will join

the Great Wall of China as one of only two manmade structures visible from outer space. My DIY strategy has always been a simple one: Phone a friend. The ice-breaker is to enquire if they have a particular type of tool that I don’t seem to have (not hard; I own only a hammer and a screwdriver). The challenge is to somehow persuade them that they should drop it over rather than me picking it up. Once a mate is on my turf I have complete confidence in my ability to demonstrate a level of uselessness that persuades him to do the job for me. Recently, a neighbour came over to help me tackle a screw that simply wouldn’t budge. I’ve never had tool envy but the electric screwdriver is a wondrous device. If you’d told me as a young man that my ambition one day would be to unscrew everything in sight, I’d have thought you were mad. The research found that a third of women tolerate their man watching TV sport – as long as they listen when it counts. Unfortunately, there’s a twisted logic there. How are we supposed to know when it counts? And after years of being asked ‘so is your team the reds or the blues?’ is it really that unreasonable for us to zone out? Apparently, one in five women are convinced their partners only pretend to listen to them. I don’t believe this and I’ve certainly never heard my wife say anything of the sort. What intrigues me – after years of personal observation – is that I reckon that if there’s one thing that annoys women more than their men, it’s other women (as distinct from ‘the other woman’ who I’ll concede could potentially be an annoyance). Women talk a lot about other women. Men only talk about other men if those men are famous (usually in sport, sometimes in politics). I’ve never overheard a group of blokes saying stuff like ‘and then do you know what he said to me?’ or ‘you should have seen what he was wearing’. ‘Goss’ is a lethal weapon we’ve not mastered. In my case, rather like the toenail clipper or the power drill. But don’t take any of the above seriously because the entire survey – and the suggestion that the perfect man doesn’t exist – is undermined by one simple fact. They didn’t ask my wife.
