Editor’s letter With every issue of Cove comes an element of excitement … but none more so than our anniversary edition when we celebrate our past success and look forward to future achievements. Fittingly, Issue 42 encompasses everything we love about the magazine industry – iconic personalities, stylish fashion, stunning imagery and informative editorial. And don’t you just love our cover? The very talented Kerrie Hess created this ‘Icons of Style’ cover especially for us. You can read more about Kerrie and her work in our ‘Cover Girl’ profile on page 124. Of course, we have many Icons of Style inside as well. Giorgio Armani shares the story behind his exquisite Privé collection; Henrietta takes a look at the seven ‘must-have’ designer pieces every woman needs in her wardrobe (Did someone mention shoes?) and our ‘Top Marques’ car feature includes labels such as Rolls-Royce, Bentley, Mercedes-Benz and BMW. Of course, no edition of Cove would be complete without some great food and travel … and luckily I got to combine both during my recent visit to the beautiful Spicers Tamarind Retreat at Maleny. Featuring a stunning

location, stylish accommodation and Chef’s Hat restaurant, Tamarind really is the ultimate in ‘relaxed luxury’. Still on the subject of food, don’t miss our interview with My Kitchen Rules co-host, Pete Evans. With a new recipe book about to hit the shelves and MKR drawing record audiences, Pete is the epitome of the ‘celebrity chef’ but it is his ‘healthy eating every day’ philosophy that really drives him to succeed. We also have a delicious recipe from Palazzo Versace’s Vanitas Restaurant; we preview the latest vintages from luxury winemaker Penfolds; and we take a look at what to expect at this year’s Noosa International Food & Wine Festival which takes place on the Sunshine Coast in May. On a more serious note, this April commemorates the 99th anniversary of ANZAC Day so our feature takes a poignant look at the history behind the Australian War Memorial. There are so many treasured memories inside the hallowed walls of this very special building … Lest We Forget. Finally, as we move into our eighth year of publication, we would like to extend our thanks to everyone who makes our job so exciting year after year. Please enjoy this very special Anniversary edition of the magazine …

commemorates their service is the essence of what every staff member of the Memorial is striving to achieve. “We want the Memorial to been seen as a sacred shrine for them. I can only hope that the Memorial assists them in their journey of healing,” he says. As a cultural institution comprising commemorative areas, a world-class museum and an extensive archive, the Memorial presents permanent exhibits, creates and curates travelling exhibitions, conducts guided tours through its galleries, provides educational activities and presentations, and conducts the daily Last Post Ceremony. “What I love most about the Memorial is that it has a different effect on each person, and the personal stories of hardship and triumph are told in such a powerful and captivating way, that every Australian can identify and empathise with them,” says Dr Nelson. “It may be about healing for some people, but for others it may be about education or about discovering their family history. It is a very personal journey and I am, much like I was when I was a General Practitioner, a guide and a counsellor to people,” he says. “It is an honour and a privilege to come to work every day at one of Australia’s most prestigious cultural institutions. To contribute to the commemoration of those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice serving their country and to be helping to pass on their stories to all Australians is an incredible source of inspiration and motivation,” he says. As a place of reflection and commemoration, the Memorial has few peers. Through history, knowledge and a wealth of displays and artefacts, it provides a peaceful, welcoming niche for all to reflect and remember the personal elements of war so often omitted from historical texts. Lest we forget. >>

THE SCULPTURE GARDEN Opened in 1999, the Sculpture Garden features commemorative works including Simpson and his donkey, Australian serviceman, Sir Edward “Weary” Dunlop, and Sir Bertram Mackennal’s War (better known as Bellona). Bellona is placed near the Lone Pine tree, planted at the Memorial in 1934 to honour Australians lost at Lone Pine. This remarkable tree was raised from the seed of a pine cone an Australian solider sent to his mother from Gallipoli. THE DAILY LAST POST CEREMONY On assuming his role, current Director Dr Brendan Nelson sought to incorporate new elements into the Memorial’s daily closing ceremony to farewell visitors and guests, which is now known as the Last Post Ceremony. “My favourite part of my day is the end of the day, but not for the reason you may think,” he says. “It’s not because I’m going home, it’s because I am off to attend the Last Post Ceremony. It begins with the singing of the Australian National Anthem, followed by the poignant strains of a Lament, played by a piper, then the story of one of the 102,000 names on the Roll of Honour is told by a serving Defence member.” Held around the Memorial’s Pool of Reflection, the ceremony concludes with the Ode and a bugler playing The Last Post at the doors of the Hall of Memory.

PAYING MY RESPECTS While at the Memorial, I was able to realise a long-held ambition to lay a wreath at the Last Post Ceremony for my grandmother’s older brother, Joseph Thomas Miniter, whose service to King and country ended when he died of disease less than a month before the Armistice. Laid to rest in the French Cemetery in Damascus, Syria, he’d never received flowers from any family member, and I sought to change that. It was a deeply moving experience. I was honoured to have finally been able to formally farewell my greatuncle not only for myself, but on behalf of all of his relatives and friends who never got to do so. And to share the emotion of the service with the day’s other attendees – some there to acknowledge someone special, others to acknowledge all who sought, and fought, to keep our country safe and free. On that day – 15 August 2013 – I made the following diary note: Today I lay a wreath at the Australian War Memorial for a man I never met ... who fought for his country, died and was laid to rest on foreign soil nearly 100 years ago. Whose sister felt his loss so deeply she gave his name to her only son. I felt proud, humbled, grief-stricken and joyous ... and yes, it is possible to feel all of those at once. God rest you, Uncle Joe. You haven’t been forgotten.

THE HALL OF MEMORY The Hall of Memory was opened on 11 November 1993 by the Prime Minister, The Hon P J Keating MP, who delivered a eulogy for the Unknown Australian Soldier. Representing all Australians who have given their lives during wartime, the Unknown Australian Soldier rests in a tomb at the centre of the Hall. Behind the tomb are four pillars representing the four ancient elements – earth, air, fire and water – to symbolise the landscapes and climates where Australians have served and died. One of the largest mosaics in the world – comprising more than 6 million enamelled glass tiles – adorns the walls of the Hall of Memory, depicting figures of the soldier, sailor, airman and servicewoman who represent the Australian experience of the Second World War. The intricate and symbolic design of the Hall of Memory also features 15 stained glass windows, each representing a defining quality of Australian servicemen and women at war, while another mosaic within the central dome depicts the souls of the dead rising towards their spiritual home. This is represented by a brilliant sun within the Southern Cross. Set above the Pool of Reflection (where the daily Last Post Ceremony is held), the Hall of Memory can only be reached by walking past the names of the 102,000 Australians who gave their lives while serving their country.

THE COMMEMORATIVE COURTYARD The Commemorative Courtyard is reached via an entrance flanked by two medieval stone lions presented to the Memorial in 1936 by the City of Ypres, where they’d formerly stood on the Menin road. At the heart of the Commemorative Courtyard are the Pool of Reflection and the Eternal Flame – the latter symbolising perpetual gratitude for the service and sacrifice of those who’ve given their lives in war. And on the next level – embracing the courtyard – is the Roll of Honour, bearing the names of the more than 102,000 Australians who’ve died in war since 1885. Visitors will often insert a paper poppy next to a name that’s significant to them, creating an eye-catching display of scarlet backgrounded by the sombre bronze walls. And between the ground and first floor levels around the Pool of Reflection is a series of 26 sandstone sculptures depicting the people and animals of Australia.

LOOKING GOOD

key pieces Henrietta Dups unveils the seven iconic items that every woman should aspire to have in their wardrobe. I remember it vividly; February 2001 and I had just started my highly covetable internship in the fashion department at Harpers Bazaar UK. I was ushered into the unglamorous, windowless, airless, fluoro-lit fashion cupboard with gaffer tape, scissors, and instructions to tape the soles of the shoes for a shoot the next day. The monotony of taping beige leather soles was suddenly broken with the flip of my wrist as a sole of (Pantone 18-1663 TPX) Louboutin-red faced me. In this instant my love affair with luxury design was ignited. To celebrate this special Anniversary edition of the Cove magazine I have devised a collection of seven iconic fashion pieces, staples in every discerning woman’s wardrobe. In no particular order these are the: Chanel Skirt Suit, Louis Vuitton luggage, Burberry trench coat, Tiffany & Co. pearl necklace, Manolo Blahnik shoe, Diane von Furstenberg wrap dress and Christian Louboutin shoe. For such a concise list, two pairs of shoes may seem an extravagance, however, in the words of Marilyn, ‘Give a girl the right shoes, and she can conquer the world’. I am also a firm believer that every woman needs in her sartorial repertoire: a pair of Manolos to confirm she is a lady, and a pair of Louboutins to scream she is a siren. To understand why it is that these seven fashion items are iconic, we have to explore what it is that makes one item achieve cult status over another. To gain some illumination on this matter I turned to the research of The New Yorker staff writer, Malcolm Gladwell in his book The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference. Malcolm explains that ‘The tipping point is that magic moment when an idea, trend, or social behaviour, crosses a threshold, tips, and spreads like wildfire’.

34

2

3 It takes a combination of factors in order for ‘The Tipping Point’ to occur. Firstly, ‘the success of any kind of social epidemic is heavily dependent on the involvement of people with a particular and rare set of social gifts’. Connectors, mavens, and salesmen, these are people with the ability to cross pollinate social networks, impart specialised information to many, and persuade the masses with their charismatic persona. Secondly, ‘the stickiness factor’ which renders its impact memorable (ie. the Louboutin red sole), needs to be added to the mix, along with ‘the power of context’; in a nutshell epidemics and human behaviour are sensitive to the conditions and circumstances of the times and places in which they occur. Coco Chanel was already a well-established name in fashion when she launched the skirt suit in the 1950s. It quickly became the brand’s ‘élément éternel’, a signature silhouette that has proven timeless in its popularity spanning seven decades. In its original form, it was worn by fashion icons including Jackie Kennedy and Grace Kelly. Today Lagerfeld’s seasonal interpretations of the suit are favoured by celebrities and aristocracy alike. The secret to the suit’s success lies in the sartorial wisdom of Coco Chanel herself: ‘simplicity is the keynote of all true elegance’. Louis Vuitton launched his luggage packing business in 1854 at a time when, under the new rule of Emperor Charles-Louis Napoleon (nephew of Bonaparte), Paris was the global epicentre for taste and luxury. It was also the era of the awkward

crinoline hooped skirt which needed particular care when being packed and transported. An innovative man, Vuitton advertised that he ‘securely packs the most fragile objects. Specialising in packing fashions’. He offered his clients custom made trunks, constructed using canvas and glue instead of hide, which would often impregnate the contents of the case with its distinct odour. The canvas came in an array of fashionable colours, including a pale shade he called Trianon grey. An instant hit with the ‘beau monde,’ LV cases are still highly coveted. Louis Vuitton has been battling copies and counterfeits since they designed the first slat trunk in Trianon grey canvas in 1858. In response to the explosion of counterfeits, Louis Vuitton presented a new canvas in Damier brown and Beige chequer board print in 1889 at the Exposition Universelle in Paris. To protect his creative property, Vuitton’s new design bore a discreet trademark and was patented, heralding the inception of fashion branding as we know it today. Across the channel, innovative draper’s apprentice Thomas Burberry founded his first outdoor apparel store in 1856; shortly after, he patented gabardine, the weather-proof fabric that transformed outerwear. He dressed famous aviators and explorers of the day including Ernest Shackleton for the Antarctic, and by 1914 Burberry was supplying the British War Office with trench coats for its soldiers. The trench coat was later modified for the public and continues to this day to be the brand’s most recognisable item. >>

5 A string of freshwater pearls have come to be considered the epitome of classic style, lending an air of ladylike allure to any outfit. Since the early 20th Century, the establishment has used pearls as a gift to symbolise rites of passage, while Audrey Hepburn brought the pearl necklace into popular culture with the opening scene from Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Recently, Catherine Martin, production designer for The Great Gatsby, collaborated with Tiffany & Co. on a Gatsby-inspired jewellery collection featuring pearls. Now what lady can resist the temptation of a set of pearls complete in a turquoise box (the most iconic packaging of all time) from Tiffany & Co. It was fashion doyenne and arbiter of style, Vogue editor Diana Vreeland, who discovered and encouraged both Manolo Blahnik and Diane von Furstenberg to launch their design careers. It is said that after Vreeland had acquainted herself with Blahnik’s sketches of shoes and set designs she implored him to focus solely on designing shoes! He took her advice, and by 1970 had established his eponymous shoe boutique on Old Church Street in upmarket Chelsea, London, where the shop still resides. At a time when chunky platforms were de riguer, Blahnik’s elegant stilettos stood out and quickly garnered the attention of the fashion pack. His career soared when in 1972 fashion designer Ossie Clark invited Manolo Blahnik to be the sole

36

shoe designer for his runway show. However, it wasn’t until Sex And The City (SATC) exploded onto our screens that Manolo Blahnik became a household name the world over and his shoes were given the single moniker ‘Manolos’. When asked by Vogue in 2010 why he thought his shoes had a timeless appeal he said, “I don’t know why my shoes are so popular – I am always surprised and mystified by it. Perhaps it’s because they don’t have a set time period or aging look to them.” Diane von Furstenberg (DvF) was already world famous as the photogenic wife of a German Prince when she arrived in New York in 1970 with a suitcase of jersey dresses made at her friend Angelo Feretti’s factory in Italy. She showed her collection of 12 silk jersey shirt dresses to Diana Vreeland, who declared them ‘absolutely smashing’ and added DvF to the New York Fashion Week Calendar. It was in 1974 that DvF created the iconic wrap dress, which, according to Vogue, was the ‘sartorial symbol of women’s sexual liberation’. Replacing the popular feminist pantsuit look of the era, the wrap dress simultaneously launched a global style movement, and transformed women’s wardrobes forever. DvF was a sensation, and in 1976, Newsweek dropped president Gerald Ford from the cover for the lady and dubbed her ‘the most marketable woman since Coco Chanel’.

In 1991 it was Diane von Furstenberg along with Catherine Deneuve and Princess Caroline of Monaco that endorsed fledgling shoe designer Christian Louboutin. In his first year Louboutin sold 200 pairs of shoes, and now sells over 700,000 pairs annually. According to Louboutin, ‘A shoe is not only a design, but it’s a part of your body language, the way you walk. The way you’re going to move is quite dictated by your shoes’. With clients like Danielle Steel purportedly owning over 6,000 pairs of his shoes and purchasing up to 80 pairs per store visit, it is little wonder the red sole is the most searched shoe brand online. In an interview with Marie Claire in 2012, Louboutin confirmed that a woman would literally sell her soul for his soles. He told the magazine, “I met a woman in Dallas … who told me about arriving late to Mass … so people would hear the clicking of her heels as she made her way to the front row.” So far in my sartorial repertoire I own exactly four of the seven iconic items, I will continue to covet the remaining three until I have them carefully curated in my wardrobe. Why, you ask, do I spend my hard earned money on such extravagances? Quite simply because, in the words of SATC’s Carrie Bradshaw, “I like my money right where I can see it: hanging in my closet.”

Every day people are judging us: how we look, how we speak, how we behave. This initial ‘assessment’ can be when we are chatting to our new neighbour, going to a partner’s home to meet the family or even meeting people on holiday. We, too, of course, are unconsciously or consciously judging others … a quick summing up of what we like and don’t like and if that first few seconds is negative, flat or seemingly offhand, it’s very hard to undo it: you don’t get a second chance to make a first impression. So how do you go about creating that confident, all-important first impression of you as an interesting, charming person? We feel more confident if we know we look our best. If unsure of the dress code for dinner at new partner’s house, ask. If it’s a casual barbie and you turn up in glitter eye shadow, poured into a sequined cocktail number, you may feel overdressed. Always smile as you walk into a room. You don’t get a It takes 15 muscles to to make a first smile and a whopping 45 to frown, so smile. Hopefully, you’ve made sure there’s no spinach stuck between your teeth (it could be wise to take a moment to check), then make it a big, sincere smile as though meeting this person is the highlight of your day. When you meet someone (and you’ve smiled as you do so) make sure your handshake is web to web (that’s the area between the index finger and thumb). There’s nothing worse than the ‘floppy-fish handshake’. Shake hands for about three seconds (you should still be smiling), and say something. This is usually something pleasant. Next, remember to eyeball people when you meet them. Don’t be tempted to look over their shoulder to see if you can spy someone more interesting. Pay full attention and try to catch their name. If you can, use it. Nothing is more flattering than someone using your name, it makes you feel

38

they’ve remembered who you are. If you have absolutely no idea who they are, glance at their name card. If they don’t have one, keep smiling. Next, focus. Look interested in what they’re saying (hopefully they’re a gifted raconteur) but if they’re not, they’ll be unused to such interest and your attentiveness will flatter them. Show how interested you are in hearing about their complicated surgical procedure by nodding your head at regular intervals and making appropriate ooh and aah comments. It would be good if you could keep smiling at this point as it does suggest you’re enjoying their company. Avoid asking questions, however, as it may prolong the description or worse, they may recall a similar procedure they want to share with you. This would complicate your exit. Now, on to the subject of exiting. This must be done with style and panache if you’re to maintain your successful first impression. When the speaker has paused (a second chance split second is sufficient), you must be alert: “Oh, impression. goodness, I’ve just seen my mother arrive. I must say hello.” Remember to say ‘excuse me’ as you head for the far side of the room as you don’t want to undo all the good work you’ve put in if they see you’ve merely moved to another group. Lastly, your voice. Charmers always have well-modulated voices that are never loud, or dare I say, raucous. So take a deep breath to get your decibel level down and then add a soft hush to your speech (think Marilyn Monroe). This is not advised for men as it may appear effeminate … rather they should endeavour to project a lower, deeper voice which will convey masculinity (and who knows what else?). With these steps you’ll be seen as a sophisticated, urbane and enormously interesting person whom others will seek out, invitations will flow and your popularity will soar. So keep smiling and enjoy it all!

AT THE WHEEL

Rolling back the years Rolls-Royce: a symbol of style, success and sophistication. WORDS SUSAN LANG-LEMCKERT

The story of Rolls-Royce begins not only with a great partnership, but with a great lunch. It was over this momentous repast that two independently successful visionaries – Charles Rolls and Henry Royce – decided to dedicate their considerable complementary talents to producing English cars of excellence. One of [later Sir] Henry Royce’s most famous quotes – ‘the quality will remain long after the price is forgotten’ – encapsulates the essence of Rolls-Royce Limited, the company he and Charles Rolls founded after that history-changing lunch. But who were these men of vision? Charles Rolls was a mechanical engineering undergraduate

50

from Cambridge with a passion for cars. Ever the entrepreneur, he established one of the country’s first car dealerships to finance his racing activities, selling mostly foreign models while searching for reliable English cars. And so came his introduction to Henry Royce, a respected engineer who produced dynamos, electrical motors and cranes, and aspired to building the best cars in the world. Royce had already designed and built a car engine that was being trialled by 1904 – the year of the famous lunch with Charles Rolls. In 1907 Rolls-Royce Limited introduced the Silver Ghost model, which earned the distinction

of being ‘the best car in the world’ – realising Henry Royce’s dream – after completing a more or less continuous 14,371 mile journey with an unprecedented smoothness. Tragically, the adventurous Charles Rolls, who also completed the first double-crossing of the English channel by air, was killed in a plane crash in 1910, when Rolls-Royce Limited was still in its infancy. But the business continued, expanding to open a US factory in 1921 and rounding out the decade by winning the Intercontinental Schneider Trophy seaplane contest in 1929, and setting a new world record for air speed at the same time. >>

Charles Rolls

Henry Royce

51

This extraordinary engine – known as the ‘R’ engine – earned even more renown when it was further developed into the Merlin engine, which was used to power allied aircraft like the Spitfire. The ‘R’ engine went on to break many more speed records, not only in the air, but also on land and at sea, before World War II saw aero engineering become the company’s priority. Indeed, the Air Ministry held the company and its engines in such esteem that it commissioned construction of a new Rolls-Royce factory in Crewe to facilitate production.

Rolls-Royce became the ultimate symbol of taste and refinement – a time-honoured perception it enjoys to this day. Peacetime ushered in a golden age for Rolls-Royce, which became the motoring firm of choice not only for the British royal family, but also for numerous high-profile celebrities – including actors and musicians enjoying a status and affluence unknown to them before the 1960s. This, combined with its reputation for excellence and continued success in breaking speed records, saw Rolls-Royce become the ultimate symbol of taste and refinement – a time-honoured perception it enjoys to this day. In the 1970s the company’s aero and motoring divisions were separated, allowing each to specialise in their particular area of expertise. And the 1990s saw the injection of further motoring excellence when the BMW Group acquired the production rights for Rolls-Royce motor cars. Today, Rolls-Royce remains universally acclaimed, and the quality and elegance it epitomises has become part of our daily vernacular, as in: “This is the Rolls-Royce of espresso machines,” an honour few brands can claim. And to think it all began with a successful business lunch …

John Lennon’s psychedelic Rolls-Royce The Rolls-Royce Phantom V Limousine delivered to the world-famous Beatle in 1965 was of a sombre hue known as ‘Valentine Black’. It provided The Fab Four with suitably elegant transport to Buckingham Palace to receive their MBEs from Her Majesty before Lennon’s penchant for the unconventional saw him making modifications. These included transforming the rear bench into a Pullman-style double bed, and installing a radio telephone, television, refrigerator, a record turntable and even a loud-hailer into the formerly conservative vehicle. Inspired by a Romany caravan he’d bought to adorn his garden, Lennon commissioned artist

52

Steve Weaver to transform the Rolls-Royce with psychedelic paintwork featuring fanciful scrolling, flowers and his zodiac sign – Libra – against an arresting yellow backdrop. As well as The Beatles and Yoko Ono, the vibrant limousine’s list of famous passengers includes The Rolling Stones, The Moody Blues, Bob Dylan and Elton John. Now a part of the Royal BC Museum in Victoria, Canada, the psychedelic Rolls-Royce has been lovingly cared for by the same technician – one Mr Jim Walters – for the last 20 years, and between exhibitions, its uniqueness is preserved by a

climate-controlled warehouse. And it’s said that Mr Walters’ search for a 1967-model portable black-and-white Sony television to replace the original that went missing from the Phantom V, continues to this day.

Power, Drama and Style.

2013 was a landmark year within the automotive history of Queensland with Sunshine Group appointed as the first ever Queensland based distributor for Rolls-Royce. Application was rigorous, protracted and ultimately, in November 2013, successful. The application success bestowed on the Sunshine Group was in part supported and inspired by the multiple automotive awards achieved by Sunshine Aston Martin and Sunshine Jaguar, in effect British brothers in automotive luxury to the Rolls-Royce brand. We now welcome Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Queensland into the family of Sunshine Group. Our celebrations in 2013 coincided with the launch of the fastest production Rolls-Royce in history – the new two door, four seater Wraith. For over 100 years Rolls-Royce has been the icon of motor engineering and design. Indeed the guiding principles of our founder Sir Henry Royce are ‘Strive for perfection in everything you

do. Take the best that exists and make it better. When it does not exist, design it’. Today Rolls-Royce delivers three ethereally named models: Phantom, Ghost and now Wraith. All models share the brand DNA defined as effortless, bespoke, iconic with presence. Phantom, the largest, most formal model in the range, is defined as the ultimate, rarest RollsRoyce with unparalleled presence. Ghost is modern, lithe and dynamic, every inch a Rolls-Royce but less formal than Phantom. Wraith is a new Rolls-Royce with unparalleled Power, Drama and Style. It expresses the boldest, darkest, most daring edge of Rolls-Royce design. A genuine driver’s car, Wraith features a fastback design with genuine four seater luxury. Wraith is with us now so please call to make an appointment to see this stunning addition to the range. We are excited and proud to represent Rolls-Royce, their investment in Queensland speaks volumes about our own future. Celebrate your success with us.

We are world leaders in sales as a percentage of market share, something we are incredibly proud of. Our confidence is clearly reflected in your confidence. 2014 continues on that trend, with two new models arriving: the Vanquish Volante and the V12 Vantage S Coupe. The current series Flying Spur encompasses Bentley’s traditions of style, luxury and exclusivity.

WORDS CHRIS NIXON

Very, very few luxury car brands have the cachet of Bentley. The name embodies London gentleman’s club ambience – all wood, Wilton and leather – with a husky dash of sporting style. But if that’s a traditional image born of a 94-year history, there is nothing old-fashioned about a current-day Bentley. Now under the ownership of Europe’s biggest car group, Volkswagen, but still manufactured in Crewe, Cheshire, Bentley offers its biggest range in many years, with a model to suit every rich driver. There are the Continental GT coupe and GTC convertible in various guises with W12 or V8 engines, a snip from $370,000. Plus the rangetopping Mulsanne, a sublime $662,000 limousine.

64

And in between, the subject of this edition’s review, the $423,000 Flying Spur. The Flying Spur started out as a sedan version of the Continental GT, but for the second edition in the current series it is a more focused vehicle in its own right and therefore no longer Continental Flying Spur, just Flying Spur. (Flying Spur is an old name in Bentley nomenclature and may have been taken after a 19th century tea clipper which traded between London and China.) Happily, a changed name is far from the biggest difference. New bodywork has given the Flying Spur style worthy of its evocative name. With elegant lines and powerful haunches, it’s a better-looking car than its predecessor.

Since its launch last year, the Spur has been sold in one version with the 6.0 litre W12 engine – 12 cylinders and two turbochargers give a mighty output of 460 kiloWatts and 880 Newtonmetres of torque – a new eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. But a less expensive V8 version is due here in coming months, following its debut at March’s Geneva motor show. A Bentley saloon is opulent, but one should not assume it therefore comes with everything but the kitchen sink. Buy a Mercedes S-Class if you want technology en bulk, but a Bentley to announce your presence in a style that can’t be ignored (plus most of the gadgets).

The interior is superficially what one would expect – hand-crafted leather and wood veneer, thick carpet and lots of chrome trim. But the quality goes beyond skin-deep and what one sees on closer inspection of the Bentley cabin is real attention to detail. Every little fitting is beautifully made and finished.

The interior is roomy, of course, and though

The power is prodigious, but easy to manage. Transmitted through a silky new 8-speed ZF auto, it will trickle you through the downtown financial district at a whisper, but tap those 880 Newtonmetres and it will deliver a satisfying shove in the back that feels unstoppable. And then you really press the accelerator and the sensation is like riding an imaginary missile. The Flying Spur will accelerate from rest to 100 kmh as fast as many sports cars and, in countries where it is allowed, top 322 kmh. Here, it’s just satisfying to know you own that ability. A car this big is never going to be overtly sporty, but it controls its bulk competently in fast bends. Full-time all-wheel drive is a huge asset in ensuring around 2.5 tonnes of executive express remain in

there’s an emphasis on back-seat comfort, the front seats don’t miss out. The electricallyadjustable driver’s chair gives a commanding view of a leather steering wheel adorned with the Bentley winged motif, a fascia with traditional round dials set in wood, and the road ahead over a broad bonnet. Chromed, organ-stop style ventilation controls are another retained tradition.

shape on slippery roads. It’s a rare feature on a car in this class. For the most part, the Bentley will be driven more gently. Here, its silence and smoothness, its insulation from the outside world, are of rare quality. The Bentley Flying Spur has rivals, but really no equivalent as a full-size saloon with presence, exclusivity, luxury, quality and a sporting touch.

Renault Australia has recently launched the latest hot hatch from the iconic Renault Sport division – the new Clio R.S. 200 EDC. It is with this car that Sunshine Renault will be leading the charge in the hot hatch section. The new Clio R.S. 200 EDC benefits from Renault’s very latest thinking when it comes to comfort and versatility, while Renault Sport Technologies brings the expertise it has forged in motor sport to the table. The result of this unique combination is an easy, enjoyable drive in everyday use. Nevertheless, the new Clio R.S. 200 EDC is equally capable of morphing into a genuine performance car with exceptional credentials. Renault’s heritage in motorsport and Formula 1 know-how is clearly demonstrated through the new 1.6 Turbo engine, steering wheel mounted paddle shifts, launch control and the new R.S. Monitor 2.0. Available in two generous specification levels – standard and Trophy – and starting with a

recommended retail price of just $31,490 on road, the new Clio R.S. 200 EDC is set to take on the hot hatch segment. “The new Clio R.S. 200 EDC is a versatile hot hatch that is equally at home in the city as on the open road. The introduction of the 6-speed dual clutch gearbox as standard and 5-door body style opens the Renault Sport product to a new demographic of buyers that we have never previously had a product to suit,” says Luke Kelly, General Manager, Sunshine Renault. “Australia is a strong Renault Sport market and in fact we are currently the second highest selling country in the world for the Mégane R.S. 265. “Sunshine Automotive acquired the Renault franchise in 2012 and their sales have been growing exponentially ever since. The year of the horsepower.

2014 may be the Year of the Horse, but with the entry of the all-new Volvo factory V8 supercar team launching in Australia, it is certainly the year of the horsepower for Volvo. The entry of the Volvo S60 in V8 supercars this year shows just how dynamic and well rounded the Volvo car brand is, adding a further dimension to its legendary status for safety, quality, design and technology. Volvo is the only factory backed luxury franchise to enter the prestigious and gruelling event. Now teaming with Polestar – Volvo’s factory racing arm – and Garry Rogers Motorsport, Volvo will again grace the circuits of Australia using our most dynamic car to date. Polestar last year released its first ever production road car – the S60 Polestar, exclusive to Australia with just 50 units produced to coincide with their V8 racing announcement. This car represents all the tuning, handling and refinement we will see in the V8 supercar entry.

It is this refinement and technology that we have seen passed down to the Volvo S60 road car, in particular the S60 T6 R Design, the flagship and hero of Volvo’s line up. For those that require performance, refinement, dynamic handling and balance, S60 is the answer. It benefits from the sports car programmes from around the world as the technology is funnelled back full circle to our road production cars, along with technologies shared in the latest and greatest of Volvo’s new platforms and models in the range. As a result, this car rivals the best in the market. In line with market trends, 2013 saw the launch of the all-new Volvo V40, a high luxury 5-seat hatch that caters for the consumer who is downsizing in dimension but not in quality, technology or on road feel. So whether it’s a small or medium size car or SUV you want, Volvo is the answer. Visit Sunshine Volvo for a truly exhilarating experience and to see why we are taking the S60 V8 Supercar racing.

Spoilt for choice The BMW 320D Gran Turismo is an impressive addition to the range. WORDS CHRIS NIXON

Choice is the life-blood of the prestige car business. It relies on tempting us with new models that appear faster than mobile phone updates. Among the Big Three German manufacturers, in particular, there’s a model for every taste, need and budget, plus some no-one has even thought of. And if you still haven’t found quite what you want, there are option lists as long as the Dead Sea Scrolls to personalise your new pride and joy. BMW has added to this brain-challenging scenario with a new variant of its 3 Series called the Gran Turismo, which will be the answer for drivers who want more space and flexibility than a sedan without having to drive a station wagon. The 3 Series Gran Turismo is a follow-up to the 5 Series Gran Turismo but significantly more appealing in its design. (And even as this is written, the company is releasing the 4 Series Gran Coupe, which seems the same, but different. But let’s not get distracted.) To make the GT, BMW has stretched the normal 3 Series body between the front and back wheels. The roofline is eight centimetres higher and slopes to the back in fastback style. The doors have frameless windows.

74

The GT’s morphed proportions look unusual at first, but work well. While the image is sporty the reality is a roomy, practical family vehicle thanks to its greater dimensions. Rear leg and head room are improved, but the real gain is in the boot. Normal load volume is 520 litres, but this more than triples to 1600 litres when the back seat is folded. Both figures are more than the Touring wagon offers. The back seat is split 40:20:40, allowing the passenger/cargo space to be configured different ways for different loads. Secure space for a couple of surfboards or bikes springs to mind. The boot has lashing points, bag hooks and under-floor storage, making it extra-practical. The ultimate aid is an automatic tailgate. Wave your toe near the rear bumper as though you were going to kick it and the tailgate opens automatically. Such new tricks keep coming in luxury-land, though what seems like a gimmick soon becomes essential. And drivers won’t have to worry about emptying all that boot space of luggage to access a spare wheel in the event of a puncture. There is no

spare, as the GT comes with BMW’s familiar runflat tyres, plus the added security of free roadside emergency service. Normally that should be completely adequate, but owners would be wise to investigate the availability of roadside service or replacement run-flats before travelling on remote rough roads. Buy a high-tech BMW-specific spare in Charleville? Good luck! Elsewhere, the 3 Series GT has all the expected safety and comfort refinements. Fuel-saving features include engine idle-stop, brake energy re-generation and on-demand activation of power-sapping engine ancillaries such as the air-conditioning compressor. The 320D GT we tested came with a 2.0 litre diesel producing 135 kiloWatts and 380 Newtonmetres, mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. This proved a powerful and frugal yet impressively driveable combination. BMW claims 0-100 kmh acceleration of 5.4 seconds and combined-cycle fuel consumption of 4.9 litres per 100 kms. Three petrol and diesel engines and four specification levels are available for the 3 Series Gran Turismo, which is priced from $69,500 plus on-roads.

The BMW Z4 has been around longer than the 3 Series Gran Turismo, but I’ve just got to drive it in sDrive28i form. This two-door convertible runs a 2.0 turbocharged petrol engine giving 180 kW of power. List price is $89,900. The Z4 range, which has been on sale since 2009, was upgraded late last year. Cosmetic changes are minor, but 8-speed automatic transmission is now standard for the 4-cylinder sDrive20i and sDrive28i. The 6-cylinder sDrive35i retains a 7-speed. The long-nose, short-tail Z4 combines traditional roadster proportions with styling that stands apart from Porsche and Mercedes rivals. The sDrive28i balances power and weight well for strong acceleration and lithesome ability when cornering. The hardtop convertible roof folds in 20 seconds and, when up, permits good boot space. It’s a proper sports car in style and ability with a typically cracking BMW engine.

Set sail Be seduced by sailing at the 2014 Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show.

78

For those who dream of feeling the wind in their hair and exploring boundless blue horizons, the 2014 Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show (SCIBS), 22 - 25 May, will be the place to see the newest sailing vessels, from performance and cruising yachts to mono and multihulls. Sailing is enjoying a boost in popularity, thanks in part to ‘the Jessica Watson effect’, the success of Australia’s sailors at the London Olympic Games in 2012 and the protracted, thrilling America’s Cup series which brought the multihulled wonders to the world’s attention. But there’s more to it than media and international events, according to Lee Randall, principal at Spirit Marine in Manly, Queensland, Beneteau dealer for Queensland and Nautitech importer for Australia. “There’s a return in consumer confidence and the emergence of a smarter buying population,” he said. “There are other social factors at play too. Diesel is not getting any cheaper, people are conscious of the costs. They are busier than ever before and looking for a more relaxing experience,

“The main market for sailing these days are families and couples planning extended cruising. “For the majority who buy new boats, the focus will be coastal cruising and they will move up to longer trips, depending on work commitments. While our market is across the board, sailing will always be popular with professional people, retirees and those coming close to retirement.” Spirit Marine will be exhibiting the Sense 46 model at the 2014 SCIBS. “This is a transitional yacht that doesn’t intimidate people. It’s a good entry level boat that suits all kinds of people, across all demographics,” said Lee. He advises those interested in understanding more about the options in sailing yachts to attend SCIBS, ‘find somebody they’re comfortable with, and who will explain the product to them, not just sell it to them’. Peter Hrones, Team Windcraft Managing Director says the sailing market that is proving the most vital and expanding is the couples segment. “Couples whose children have or are nearing end of schooling. They are keen to give more time

a quiet connection to the ocean, which is where sailing fits the bill perfectly.”

to their own activities while still relatively young and healthy, and their children can join them. Also

“Sailing is about the journey as well as the destination. Getting there is interesting, challenging and fun." — Peter Hrones Fellow SCIBS exhibitor Mark Elkington from Multihull Solutions says he has seen a rise in interest in sailing catamarans among the retiree cruiser market, looking to spend many months enjoying Pacific and world cruising, attracted by the low running costs, safety, stability and comfort that a multihull offers at sea. “The main growth area in the worldwide sailing market is sailing catamarans,” says Mark. “The reason we feel the multihull sailing market is experiencing this growth is due to the change in buyers’ requirements. These new buyers want stability, safety and comfort and their budgets are also well suited to the higher price of multihulls.” And where once rigging, spars and equipment, sailing terminology and gadgetry were complicated and costly, the next generation of sailing yachts have been designed to simplify the entire experience and many dealers offer sailing lessons and guidance for new owners. “It’s our objective as dealers to demystify sailing,” says Lee. “We spend a lot of time instructing people on how to use their new boats and Beneteau as a brand has evolved designwise to be more ergonomic, easier to use and more user-friendly, for people crossing over from powerboats or entering the boating market for the first time.

younger families keen to enjoy an activity which brings them all together,” he said. “Likewise, they may find their competitive spirits kindled and take up competing in local club races and regattas. For some they are fulfilling long held dreams to sail the world. “Sailing is about the journey as well as the destination. Getting there is interesting, challenging and fun. Sailing provides an endless learning curve and sense of achievement. It only takes one person to drive a power boat, whereas all passengers can participate in sailing a yacht if they wish. A yacht is very versatile and can keep all members of the party happy.” Proudly sponsored by Club Marine, SCIBS will run from Thursday, 22 May to Sunday, 25 May 2014. The 26th annual SCIBS will showcase a raft of international boating brands, products and technologies alongside the backdrop of the award-winning Sanctuary Cove Marina and The Marine Village. COVE LIVING

Moving forward Last year was an activity-filled year at Sanctuary Cove, spear-heading a positive start to 2014.

Sanctuary Cove Developer Mulpha enjoyed a successful year of sales, new construction and the welcoming of new tenants to The Marine Village in 2013, including the opening of IGA Village Market, the first full-serviced supermarket for Sanctuary Cove in its 26-year history. Wrapping up a successful year of land sales, local buyers converged on the first new dry land release at Sanctuary Cove in three years when it was launched to the market last September, leaving just one parcel remaining for sale. The largest lots ever offered in the elevated precinct of Alpinia, the launch saw sites released that offered families or couples the opportunity to build a substantial home and still have space for a sizeable backyard. Three of the 1000sqm parcels were purchased within just weeks, with another pre-sold to a Gold Coast-based buyer ahead of the release hitting the market. Mulpha Sanctuary Cove General Manager of Sales John Hughes said the quick sale of lots at Alpinia demonstrated the strong demand for land in Sanctuary Cove. “As soon as this collection was released, buyers pounced,” he said. “Our aim was to provide prospective buyers with yet another residential offering to consider at Sanctuary Cove in addition to our golf course and water frontage lots.” John said Sanctuary Cove’s prestigious waterfront lots were also beginning to disappear within the development, with lots in the first stages of Tristania now close to selling out. “Sales on our waterfront lots picked up throughout 2013. The first quarter of 2014 has also proven strong, so we are looking forward to greater improvement as the market continues to grow stronger and build momentum.”

In The Marine Village, construction is nearing completion on a new waterfront dining precinct on the site of the old Village Green and original Sanctuary Cove Tavern. When complete, the building will provide an additional 600sqm of restaurant space, overlooking the spectacular Sanctuary Cove Marina. Driven by tenant demand and offering some of the last absolute waterfront tenant space in The Marine Village, John said Mulpha was expecting to attract some new international cuisines to add to the vibrant Marine Village restaurant mix. He said an expression of interest leasing campaign was currently open for the space, and the team had already received enquiries from an array of potential operators. The new building is expected to be completed ahead of the 2014 Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show (SCIBS) in May. Sanctuary Cove residents and visitors now also enjoy the convenience of having a full-service supermarket right on their doorstep, following the opening of IGA Village Market. Located at the entrance to The Marine Village, complete with dedicated buggy parking bays, the IGA Village Market is the perfect spot to pick up something special for entertaining or to do your full grocery shop away from the hustle and bustle. The boutique-style supermarket stocks specialties such as Tenterfield Steak and Bangalow Pork, sourced direct from the green fields of New South Wales, along with Maleny Milk products sourced from Queensland’s Sunshine Coast. Alongside its specialty products, the supermarket sells a wide range of standard grocery lines as well as baked goods and a selection of high-end artisan-style produce, including fine chutneys, olive oils and condiments, meat and fresh produce.

If you need a caffeine hit before you tackle the aisles, IGA Village Market also sells ready-togo coffees made from beans supplied by World Barista Championship winner Paul Bassett. Mulpha Sanctuary Cove Executive General Manager Keith Allardice said the market had been trading well since its opening late last year. “Residents, business operators and visitors have been keen to check out what is a long awaited addition to The Marine Village retail mix and have been pleasantly surprised by the choice of different products that are available,” he said. “Boaties can now restock their galleys and pick up much more than the bare essentials when they call in or before they set off.” In other Marine Village news, the popular Thai House restaurant which closed in early 2013 due to a fire has also re-opened. The new Thai House now occupies the tenancy which previously housed the Sanctuary Cove Yacht Club and enjoys waterfront and marina views. As the Sanctuary Cove team and Marine Village tenants start to prepare for the 26th annual SCIBS which runs from 22-25 May, exciting times lay ahead for the remainder of the year. Keith said Sanctuary Cove continues to set the bar as one of the best masterplanned communities in Australia. “Last year was a great turn-around year for us here at Sanctuary Cove. We had the best sales volumes achieved since before the GFC began in 2008 and saw new record sales prices achieved for many years,” said Keith. “Sanctuary Cove residents and stakeholders can enjoy a positive 2014 as Mulpha continues to invest in the community, ensuring it maintains its internationally renowned reputation as one of the best places in Australia to live, work and play.”

WELL TRAVELLED

A taste of tamarind Nestled in the lush green hills of the Sunshine Coast, Spicers Tamarind Retreat is the epitome of relaxed luxury.

WORDS RHONDA OXNAM

There is much more to the Sunshine Coast than soft sand and surf breaks … venture inland and you will find yourself in the picturesque hinterland, with its quaint villages, bohemian culture and relaxing way of life. It is here, on the outskirts of Maleny, that I discovered Spicers Tamarind Retreat. Set amid 18 acres of lush rainforest, this exclusive property features 12 stand-alone accommodation Villas, a ‘Hatted’ restaurant, luxury day spa and a cooking school. From the moment I drove through the gates, I immediately went into relaxation mode. Sure I was ‘on assignment’ to familiarise myself with the property and report back on my findings … but that didn’t mean I couldn’t enjoy myself while I was there. My first task after checking in (friendly, efficient and very pleasant) was to inspect the two-bedroom Forest King Luxury villa that my partner Derek and I were lucky enough to call home for two nights. It was everything you would expect from a resort of this calibre – private, welcoming and luxurious – with every element designed to make guests as comfortable as possible. >>

89

“We try to achieve that home away from home feeling of relaxed luxury that is certainly not pretentious but is very, very engaging and inviting, a place to do as much or as little as you like,” explains Spicers’ Sunshine Coast General Manager David Assef. David, along with his wife Stephanie, is responsible for the day to day running of both Tamarind Retreat and the nearby Spicers Clovelly Estate at Montville and insists that customer service is always their number one priority. “The service level is critical and it’s something we work on constantly to ensure the guests’ experience is memorable,” he says. “It’s not just about the food they eat, it’s not just about the spa

one of the prettiest spots you could hope to find. While others were swimming in the crystal clear waters, we decided to head back to the Retreat’s private pool and cool off before returning to the villa to change for dinner. Dining at The Tamarind, the resort’s awardwinning restaurant, is an experience in itself. While the Asian-inspired menu offers a la carte and degustation options, we chose to indulge in the classic Thai banquet … several courses of appetising share plates served against a backdrop of soft lighting and natural timbers. The setting was also a delight, with bi-fold doors opening up to let the outside in and the surrounding bushland creating an intimate yet relaxed ambience.

treatment they have, but it’s everything in between. It’s about the interaction they have with the team and I think that’s what defines what we are as Spicers Retreats.” Which brings us back to my tranquil stay at Tamarind Retreat. One of the first things I noticed about the retreat was the lack of others guests … figuratively not literally. The occasional glimpse of a sunhat or the crunch of tyres on gravel reminded you that you were not alone but the whole property is designed to give the feeling of privacy, of feeling that you are the only person to be experiencing the absolute paradise that is Spicers Tamarind Retreat. After spending a couple of hours enjoying the solitude of the villa, it was time to explore the property. Following the well signposted walking tracks, we meandered along, breathing in the fresh mountain air, before making our way to the nearby Gardner’s Falls, a well known local landmark and

While every dish was amazing, my favourite was the dessert – Kampot pepper mousse, strawberries, mandarin gel, freeze dried mandarin, strawberry sorbet and seasonal fruit. Unusual but delicious! “We are very much experiential driven properties,” explains David, when I tell him how much we enjoyed the meal. “Eating is so much a part our lives so, it is important that every meal delivered is a memorable dining experience. “We are quite proud of the fact that we have one Hat at The Tamarind and two Hats at The Long Apron, Clovelly Estate. “We are really lucky that the region has a vast variety of great local produce that the chefs just love. They can roll with the seasons so guests are constantly surprised at what may be delivered.” Speaking of surprises, David very kindly arranged for me to enjoy a rejuvenating treatment at their signature spa, Spa Anise, during my stay. >>

WELL TRAVELLED

Located within the grounds of Tamarind Retreat, Spa Anise is an oasis of calm and serenity. Again designed to bring the outside in, the building features a stunning ‘wet area’ with a deep mineral spa, rain shower and steam room, as well as private treatment rooms and a sumptuous relaxation area. Of course, everything is of the highest standard and the experienced team offer a selection of pampering treatments for all their guests, whether they are staying in-house or simply day visitors. Fully relaxed after a hydrotherapy session, body scrub and massage, the next item on my agenda was to spend some time exploring the local region. With both Maleny and Montville within a short drive, this proved to be an easy assignment. The two villages pay homage to the thriving arts and craft culture and provide visitors with the opportunity to wander through an eclectic selection of shops, boutiques and galleries or simply sit and enjoy a cup of coffee as they watch the world go by. According to David, who is also a member of the Sunshine Coast Tourism Advisory Panel, engaging with the local community and driving the tourism market is a very important aspect of the business.

“We are constantly growing and supporting the region … embracing the creative aspect of what the hinterland has to offer and trying to get more awareness for the amazing artists we have up here by showcasing them in events such as Open Studio and Sculpture on the Edge held in Spring each year,” he explains. “We are less than an hour and a half from Brisbane, and you can get from the coast to the mountains in a very short amount of time, so it’s a perfect destination,” he says. “For visitors to be able to come up here and go to a local studio to learn how to draw, how to sculpt, how to do pottery or learn how to cook here at our Cooking School, is what the region is all about. “I also think it’s important to add a little more depth to what our guests at Spicers are experiencing so we are working with some of the locals, including the Indigenous community, developing eco tours and guided walking tours, and taking it to that next level for those that want to be a bit more active. “Of course, for those that want to do nothing that’s an option as well,” he adds. I, for one, elected to do very little during my stay and as a result left the area feeling refreshed, recharged and ready for the busy couple of weeks leading up to deadline.

Food philosophy Pete Evans – an award-winning chef, restaurateur, author, health coach, TV presenter, adventure seeker and father – shares his love of healthy eating with a new audience. WORDS RHONDA OXNAM

Award-winning chef and co-host of My Kitchen Rules, Pete Evans is one of Australia’s leading authorities on healthy cooking and nutrition. Inspired by a paleo way of eating, his latest book, Healthy Every Day, includes lighter, healthier versions of many favourite recipes including breakfasts, salads, curries and burgers. This book addresses the myth that healthy food is not necessarily tasty. Why is it important to get that message across? It’s important for people to understand that there are countless ways to create incredibly delicious meals from nutritious ingredients that not only taste better but also allow you to feel satiation after you eat. I’m enthusiastic to communicate this information because our nation, along with many other nations around the world, is suffering immense life threatening, chronic mental and physical health issues. Human innovation has come a seriously long way with astounding creations like the internet and space travel, yet the state of many people’s health is deteriorating despite so much technical advancement. It makes perfect sense to me that we’re stressing and eating ourselves sick and the latest non bias, reputable science is proving that every day. So I’m hoping that by providing exciting, easy to prepare recipes, containing nutritious, sustainable ingredients then we’ll see a shift in people’s health and once again humans will thrive. Home cooks may be reluctant to experiment with some the more unfamiliar ingredients such as kangaroo and emu … are these ingredients

readily available? Why should we try them? Emu and kangaroo are indeed accessible from good butchers and farmers markets. They’re both wonderful additions to introduce to your diet because they’re full of bioavailable nutrients, and also the fact that emus and roos have lived natural lives is an imperative situation to contribute to their nutrient density content and their quality of life. We need to stand up against cruel, greedy, feedlot farming methods and treat our animals with respect. An animal that has been raised on an unnatural diet, pumped full of hormones, antibiotics and other toxic drugs, forced to live in a tiny, uncomfortable, unhygienic stall or cage is completely unethical and also makes them unfit for consumption.

I n v I tat I o n Is Africa on your Bucket List? If so, please join us at our informative presentation.

Some of the recipes, such as the sprouted seed bread, are actually those of other chefs … how does working with others in the industry inspire you? For me, sharing my own and other’s recipes and also knowledge is what cookbooks are all about! The sprouted seed bread was graciously given to me by a mate of mine Pete Melov from The Suveran. Pete M has been following a paleo-inspired diet for a very long time now and he’s inspired many people to take control of their lives and choose a wheat, gluten, grain, sugar, soy free diet which allows them to enjoy optimum health and longevity. I’ve always been inspired by trail blazing chefs who push boundaries, respect ingredients and create delicious, nutritious food, so naturally I feel motivated by people that share my passion. You have incorporated a lot of ‘super foods’ such as quinoa and chia seeds in your recipes … does this reflect your personal ethos or is it in response to the growing trends towards healthier eating? Firstly, I must tell you that quinoa and chia are certainly not super foods. Quinoa especially is something to enjoy every so often if you can tolerate it, and chia has some wonderful nutrients, but I don’t believe they deserve the term ‘super’! Quinoa over the years has become extremely popular, but it’s become funky to the point that the farmers who once enjoyed it in North and South America can’t afford to eat it any longer and therefore have to survive on cheap junk food, so it’s important to seek out locally grown produce like Kindred Organics in Tasmania. You have many facets to your career … chef, TV personality, author … how difficult is it to balance these different roles? Is there one facet you enjoy more? I do my best to enjoy harmony and balance in my life and I feel very fortunate to be able to appreciate a life filled with tranquility despite my busy schedule! My greatest joy is definitely surfing with my three girls, for me that’s one of the most exceptional feelings I’ve ever experienced and I’m lucky to be able to enjoy it on a weekly basis. As far as my professional career goes I’m fully honoured to be able to reach and connect with people that are at a point where they’re willing to take the step towards a healthier lifestyle. I receive numerous encouraging emails daily from people who have renewed their health through a personalised paleo-inspired diet and also emails from grateful followers who’ve cured their children, family or friends of debilitating mental and physical illnesses too. Hearing such uplifting success stories allows me to wholeheartedly believe that I’m on the right path, and contributing to the nourishment of others, which is the most important part of my journey as a chef. My Kitchen Rules (MKR) has been a huge success ... what do you love about working on the show? I love the fact that MKR inspires people to develop a relationship with food and to get back into the kitchen and prepare their own meals. This is a wonderful stepping stone towards people and families making healthier choices and understanding the importance of choosing local, seasonal, ethical produce and therefore directly supporting the amazing Australian farmers that provide it. >>

Due to its high sugar content, I view fruit as a treat to have from time to time. The fruit I have at home is usually organic, and often includes fresh or frozen berries, watermelon, green apples and bananas (I keep them in the freezer to add to smoothies or for making dairy-free ice cream). This simple dish is ideal on a hot summer’s day as it’s truly refreshing and light. If you don’t have a melon baller, simply cut the watermelon into small pieces.

WatermELon, fig, dAtE And pistAcHio salAd 500 g watermelon balls 6 medjool dates, pitted and sliced into thin slivers ¼ teaspoon fine sea salt 1 tablespoon lime juice 4 fresh figs, cut into quarters 45 g shelled pistachio nuts, toasted and roughly chopped 1 teaspoon black chia seeds few drops of rosewater

Place the watermelon and dates in a large bowl. Stir the salt into the lime juice in a small bowl, then drizzle over the salad and toss well. Gently toss through the figs. Refrigerate until well chilled. Serve sprinkled with the pistachio nuts, chia seeds and rosewater. ServeS 4

noTE Our bodies can’t differentiate between natural and processed sugars, so whether we eat high-fructose fruit like bananas, or sucrose-laden cakes and biscuits, the sugars still cause insulin spikes, weight gain and other problems. Although fruit sugar is broken down more slowly by the body, causing less of a sugar spike, excess consumption may still lead to weight gain or, even worse, liver problems. Sadly, most fruit these days has been genetically engineered to be super sweet and oversized. The key is to source organic, seasonal fruit and only eat it in moderate amounts.

Kangaroo is delicious, native, abundant and extremely healthy, with a low fat content and lots of iron. In this recipe I have teamed roo with Moroccan flavours, as I love the intoxicating aroma that fills the kitchen when cooking with spices like this. If you can’t find roo mince, use kangaroo fillet instead – just cut it into strips and thread it onto skewers. You could also substitute lamb, beef or emu mince. Our kids absolutely love this dish and aren’t opposed to eating emu or kangaroo at all.

Extract from Healthy Every Day by Pete Evans

This book pays homage to a healthy lifestyle yet many of the dishes you are served on MKR are loaded with unhealthy ingredients. How do you deal with that? The food I eat on MKR represents less than one per cent of my diet, so I choose not to let it concern me, particularly because I believe that worry and guilt can be almost as debilitating as poor nutrition. This doesn’t mean that I believe in cheat days, or allowing yourself one or two days a week of unhealthy eating. I do my job and I’m passionate about the show and I take my health crusade one step at a time. MKR allows me to reach a broader audience and my team and I are dedicated to sharing as much knowledge as possible, so the human connection that’s created from being in people's loungerooms at night on a family cooking show is indeed invaluable. Have you ever used, or been inspired by, the recipes prepared by the contestants on MKR? Absolutely I’ve been inspired by contestants from every series. We’ve enjoyed some incredible dishes on the show and I’ve taken great pleasure in recreating a few of them into paleo orientated delights. Having grown up on the Gold Coast what do you think of the food culture that has developed here in recent years? I know there’s a growing culture of some wonderful organic farmers producing some exquisite, ethical, sustainable, flourishing food on the coast which is positively commendable and crucial for our health and our beautiful country. The mindful farmers and the honest, toxin free produce that they grow and raise, in my mind, are the real heroes in this industry and deserve all the accolades.

MKR allows me to reach a broader audience and my team and I are dedicated to sharing as much knowledge as possible. You do a lot of travelling … what is your most frequent destination and why? I do spend a fair amount of time on planes these days. My partner Nic and I have been travelling to and from the US recently to film a healthy cooking series that is partially a documentary too. The show encapsulates simple, healthy, family orientated recipes along with significant knowledge from leading world health experts, including physicians, scientists and authors. I’m actually answering these questions en route from NYC to Portland, as we’re on our way to interview and cook with a friend of ours Nora Gedgaudas who is one of the most inspirational and enlightening people we know. Nora has spent the past 30 years of her life searching for answers and over the last ten years she wrote a revolutionary, internationally renowned book called Primal Body Primal Mind, which was the book that changed my life immensely three years ago, it’s a must read. What was your best overseas dining experience? My best overseas dining experience was at Tertulia, Seamus Mullen’s exceptional Spanish restaurant in NYC. Seamus prepared us a sublime paleo dinner that dazzled our tastebuds and nourished our bodies and left us feeling completely content. He’s an incredibly talented, conscious, exciting chef who’s going to do great things in the world of food and nutrition. What is the most exotic dish you’ve tasted? I find oysters to be rather exotic, also uni (sea urchin). I love simple dishes that don’t require any super flash trimmings or preparation. Is there a country/city on your travel ‘bucket list’? I’m keen to take my family Nic, Chilli and Indii to every great wave in the world. I realise that’s a little on the extravagant side, but we’ll all be happy to camp on the beach just to enjoy the surf.

Top hat Sanctuary Cove restaurant, Jonez on Food, has been awarded a Chef’s Hat. Fine dining restaurant Jonez on Food, in The Marine Village, Sanctuary Cove, has added another Chef’s Hat award to the cabinet after impressing judges from the Australian Good Food Guide (AGFG). Jonez on Food was among 20 of the Gold Coast’s finest restaurants to receive the prestigious award, out of a staggering 497 restaurants Australia wide. Having opened as a simple gourmet deli-café in 2011 and then transforming into a full scale fine dining restaurant, owners Gary and Belinda Jones said they were jubilant to have won their second Chef Hat during their time at Sanctuary Cove. “We were very pleased to hear we had won another Chef Hat,” said Gary. “We received our first award only four months after opening in August 2011 so it’s a great feeling

108

to have received it again after being up against so many great local restaurants. “Every day we are open we put 100 per cent into pleasing the customer, so it was nice to receive a phone call to say we were in contention.” A very experienced chef, Gary’s career includes stints at Michael’s Main Beach, Michael’s Riverside Restaurant in Brisbane and a Michelin Star restaurant in London. He has also owned and operated award-winning restaurants in Perth and Melbourne. With a collective experience of more than 40 years alongside wife Belinda, Gary has developed an innovative creative process dubbed as ‘food evolution’. “I spend countless hours talking to many suppliers and food producers as well as doing my own online research to source the freshest

and the highest quality ingredients,” said Gary. “It can be a flash of inspiration or could take six months to come up with a new dish to hit the menu.” Gary has had outstanding reviews on a variety of dishes, most notably the Prawn Chao Mae dumplings with caramelised prawns which are very popular with diners. Unequivocally, Jonez on Food is one of the ‘must try’ restaurants in The Marine Village, offering guests exceptional Gold Coast dining, with picturesque views of the Sanctuary Cove Marina.

WINE CELLAR

Blue chip wines The Penfolds’ 2014 release offers some of the best – and most expensive – vintages in today’s market. WORDS TONY HARPER

‘It won’t be inexpensive’. Peter Gago, Chief Winemaker at Penfolds, peddled the phrase twice, possibly three times, during a ninety minute tasting of the 2014 release of the Penfolds Bin wines. His tongue was firmly in his cheek but it was a phrase he dealt with the guile of a politician. Coming from a guy figure-heading a wine company that only 18 months ago released the Ampoule – at $168,000 a bottle – they are hardly surprising words. And despite the fact that the retail price for one or two of the wines in the new release is still in dispute I’d be surprised if they even lapped at the toes of the Ampoule price: the Penfold’s team is courageous and confident but hardly daft. As a current release wine I reckon the 50-yearold Tawny is no doubt next in line at around $3,500 a bottle. It’s an awesome fortified – complex, immaculately balanced and fresh … despite its dotage – and it would happily compare to the

110

best tawnies from Australia’s best producers. But it out-prices them (even the Seppeltsfield 100-year-old), most by several times. Where it justifies its price is in rarity (300 bottles each year) and its package; hand blown and assembled by glass-artist Nick Mount with stoppers turned from Penfolds barrels. It’s expensive and impressive for those who can pay the ferryman. And it’s clearly aimed at those who can. But the meat of this tale is the latest release of the Bin wines. There’s a new one. Or, more correctly, a recreation of a wine released only once before, in 1973: Bin 170 Kalimna Shiraz. Bin 170 – in both instances – has come from a small plot of shiraz vines known as Block C in the Penfolds Kalimna vineyard. It won’t be inexpensive. But it’s a wine that the propaganda reckons will drink well until 2055 by which time I’ll be fertiliser and my kids will be giving some serious thought to their superannuation. I’ve been lucky enough to taste it and truth be told it should, given good cellaring, look pretty good in another 40 years. Right now it is a show-stopper – rich, succulent, spiced with oak but laden with a bath-load of supremely good fruit. Sitting alongside the rest of the Penfolds’ reds it looks kind of big and lush, but stacked alongside a bunch of Barossa and McLaren Vale big-guns I reckon it would seem quite refined; not quite elegant, but beautifully balanced and restrained. And lurking behind that restraint is some serious intensity and crafting. If you like to collect top-end Australian reds and can afford things that aren’t inexpensive the Bin 170 is simply blue chip. It will be worth a bomb down the track, and is an extraordinarily good wine to drink (yes … you can actually drink these wines!). With the Bin 170 making its appearance, at the tasting, the trotting out of the 2009 Penfolds Grange was almost pedestrian. But not quite, after all … it’s Grange. 2009 is one of those vintages with middle-child syndrome, sandwiched between the warmer, more boisterous 2008 and 2010,

which for an icon like Grange (expected to have knockout power every vintage) can kind of cool the excitement, but I’ll take the 2009 every time. Regardless of popular thought, Grange is, in today’s terms, a wine concerned more with balance and complexity than sheer weight. Two days after tasting these wines I ran through the reds from a highly regarded Barossa producer and the difference is like going from opera to heavy metal; in a contemporary context Grange is a middleweight; light-heavy at best. And the 2009 is a perfect example. Already it has layers and a surprisingly generous, open-knit personality that kind of defies the myths of Grange needing a lifetime to become drinkable. This is a wine that is drinkable today, but also one that will evolve and grow over the next two or three decades. To prove the point the Penfolds guys poured both 1994 and 1964 Grange. Both were awesome and the 1999 was – I believe – a better wine than either.

Grange is, in today’s terms, a wine concerned more with balance and complexity than sheer weight. Of the rest of the pack there were few duds and several highlights, most notably the 2010 Penfolds St Henri (it will be one of the greats) and a superb trio of chardonnays. Penfolds has come a long way with chardonnay since the beginnings of the ‘A’ series and the early Yattarnas, following the learning curve that the variety has forced across the country. The chardonnays coming out of the stable right now are equal parts profound and predictably house-styled. If you are a Yattarna fan, the 2011 will float your boat. It’s a blend of Adelaide Hills and Tasmanian fruit with a good dose of the (nowadays) trademark Penfolds matchstick reductiveness and fruit that is more a citric core that plays second fiddle to the ferment artifact. It’s sophisticated, it’s precise and it’s worth every cent. But in my books the 2012 Reserve Bin A is more fun. Here the envelope has been pushed further – more matchstick funk, leaner fruit, surly, reticent … genius. None of the wines are inexpensive, and some obviously less so than others. I’m still waiting on a release price for the Bin 170, but I’m guessing it will sell for somewhere around the $1,000 a bottle: I could be wrong. It doesn’t really matter. It, like several of this latest release, will go on to become an icon, and that’s something with which Penfolds, more than any other Australian wine producer, is well acquainted.

Title defence

Less is more as Adam Scott prepares for his Masters defence. WORDS PAUL PRENDERGAST PHOTOGRAPHY MARK WILSON

As article deadlines passed and flat plans for this edition were being scrutinised by the editor, our first Masters champion (it never gets old saying that!) Adam Scott was in the midst of his own ‘flat plan’, tucked away at his base at the Albany club in The Bahamas, preparing for the defence of his Green Jacket at Augusta National from 10-13 April 2014. The ultra opulent Albany is where Adam had the chance last year to let his hair down with a party long in the planning with fellow first-time major winner, 2013 US Open champion Justin Rose. If you’ve never heard of Albany, look it up, as there wouldn’t be too many better places to celebrate your career highlight (to date) than at this slice of paradise. Scott and Rose made a pledge in their early twenties that the first of them to win a major would spring for the bill for a lavish celebration.

112

Technically, Adam was the ‘winner’ of that bet having taken out The Masters in April although Justin’s win followed just two months later. The size of the bill is unknown but there’s no doubting the local economy was also a winner on the night. Back home at Sanctuary Cove on the morning of last year’s final round, club members and Adam’s mother and sister gathered in anticipation to watch the final moments and toast a local hero who had coveted the Green Jacket since he was a junior playing with his mates in Queensland. To show that home was close to his heart in the tumult of emotions after the final putt fell and he became the first Australian to ever slip on the Green Jacket, Adam was soon in contact with Sanctuary Cove to shout the bar at the golf club.

At Albany during February however, with the party hat set aside for another day, he was putting in some serious hard wiring of his game to prepare for Augusta and his other goals for 2014 as the weekly show that is the PGA Tour ticked on inexorably without him. Adam has said often that he would force himself to take a six week break from competition despite the momentum he took into the New Year after a memorable Australian summer, which netted him two victories, the World Cup of Golf team title with Jason Day and second place behind Rory McIlroy after a final hole bogey/birdie swing between the two at the Australian Open. It’s this careful planning and a reduced playing schedule that contributes to him being a factor in almost every major he now contests and which

brought him the ultimate success last April, outlasting Argentina’s Angel Cabrera on the second playoff hole to win The Masters and unleash an outpouring of joy and celebration around Australia. “I’m keeping the big picture in mind and my priorities are the Masters and the other three majors later this year, and I think the break was necessary, even though I was playing well,” Adam said recently of his break from the game. “I haven’t been competitive but I’ve certainly been working on all areas of the game. Hopefully I’m on track.” The World No 2’s (at time of print) faith in his ability and that this scheduling is best suited to his game are among his great comforts and strengths these days and as the best performed player in the world in the past eight majors in relation to par, it’s exciting to contemplate what 2014 might have in store for him. Not since 2001-2002 has a player won back-to-back Masters titles and should Adam succeed in emulating that feat, he may surpass the very player – Tiger Woods – who achieved that feat as the World No 1. Jostling for the top spot with Woods is ironic given the pair shared the same coach in Butch Harmon over a decade ago. At that time, Tiger was at his absolute peak and Adam was in the early stages of his career, with a swing and motion that seemed to be a replica of Woods’. Tiger would almost certainly like that to again be the case, although it’s he who could do worse than to copy Scott’s powerful and majestic swing these days. Despite Tiger’s inconsistent performances to start 2014, Adam is respectful but far from intimidated by the 14-time major winner’s future prospects.

“… I’ve certainly been working on all areas of the game. Hopefully I’m on track.” – Adam Scott “It wouldn’t surprise me that Tiger comes and wins again this year, but I think my generation of player is feeling like their time is now, so they have got to take advantage of it,” he said. “I just feel like the way it’s been shared around a little bit lately, you’ve seen my generation of players, the Justin Roses, who have got to that level where they have put ten or 12 years’ experience in the bank. They have raised the level of their own game over the last couple of years and believe it’s their time to do it.” And Adam clearly hopes and expects that his fellow Australians will be part of this movement, buoyed by his success. “Hopefully every Aussie that’s there from now on will appreciate not being asked whether it will be them (to be the first) this year,” he said. Having an Aussie join him annually on Tuesday night of Masters’ week at the Champions Dinner – which Adam will host and pick up the tab for this year as defending champion – would please him no end but their mountain to climb is no less high or difficult despite Adam showing them the way. Only four Australians were qualified for the 2014 Masters at the time of writing, so the odds have been better. Worse still however is the fact that, although the next Aussie won’t have to contend with the burden of becoming Australia’s first winner, they now have to overcome ‘the’ first winner in Adam, who has gone to another level with his game and self-assuredness and for whom the major championship shackles are most certainly off. Not that we should get ahead of ourselves, but having the party hats close by come April 13 this year wouldn’t be such a bad move. ‘C’mon Aussie!’

Shen Yun Performing Arts deliver a stunning visual journey through time and space. WORDS EVAN MANTYK PHOTOGRAPHY © 2013 SHEN YUN PERFORMING ARTS

There are rare moments in history when a show, a book, or a piece of art takes its viewer to a whole new realm. Boundaries previously thought unmovable, like those between the stage and the backdrop, are erased and reinvented, never to be the same. Watching Shen Yun Performing Arts is witnessing just such a moment. And when Shen Yun arrives at The Arts Centre Gold Coast, 24–27 April, for a five-show run, its newest innovations will be on full display. For alongside its talent-laden cast of dancers and musicians, Shen Yun’s ingenious animated backdrops are leaving the entertainment industry astounded. “Going to the theatre and the movies at the same time,” is how Robert Stromberg, Academy Award-winning production designer for Avatar, described it. “It was so inspiring, I think I may have found some new ideas for the next Avatar.” What Shen Yun’s projection designs do is seamlessly synchronise all aspects of the performance. The costumes’ colours, specific dance movements, drums, lighting, particular notes played by the orchestra – are all timed with animated movements on an enormous digital backdrop. In one dance, the Monkey King (a sort of Buddhist superhero from ancient China) soars through the air with exquisite dexterity, gracefully delivering kicks and twirls of his staff to his enemies. As the enchanting scene continues, the Monkey King literally pulls the moon down from the sky onto the stage.

In several other dances, celestial fairies and divine beings descend to Earth, magically transitioning from digital backdrop figures into flesh and blood on stage. The effect is like a beautiful painting coming to life. “It starts off very simple,” said Mike Hogue, who animated movies from Titan A.E. to Anastasia and television shows like George of the Jungle. “Then when you all of a sudden have these surprises of people coming out of the screen, it’s just, ‘Oh my gosh, okay, this is something really different, really innovative’.”

Boundaries previously thought unmovable, like those between the stage and the backdrop, are erased and reinvented … An epic journey China is one of the world’s most ancient civilisations, at about 5,000 years. Its rich dynastic history, majestic landscapes, and diverse ethnic groups become destinations on Shen Yun’s epic journey through time and space. The backdrop takes you there, from the snow-capped Himalayan peaks to the subtropical forests of Southwest China; from the tranquil Yangtze River Delta to the flaming beacon towers along the winding Great Wall; and from the boundless Mongolian grasslands to heavenly scenes of gods and deities. “It creates a unique atmosphere and a beautiful, colourful world,” said Masahide Yanagawase, one

of Japan’s foremost visual-effects artists. “The unfolding of the plots and the ways of expressing stories are very attractive. It’s a precious event.” As with all aspects of the Shen Yun production, there is a superior level of attention paid to authenticity. A scholarly discourse on the company’s website reflects on the details of the landscapes in the backdrops. “The gardens of Jiangnan are exquisite and enchanting, giving the feeling of meditative seclusion. Indeed, it is a place historically renowned as a cultural and literary center,” it reads. “And yet the winding river with small houses along the banks, seeming to emerge from an ink-wash painting, creates a charming picture of simple, bucolic river life.” This accuracy stood out to Avatar’s Stromberg, who studied Chinese landscapes. “Seeing a traditional performance with the authentic dance moves and authentic backgrounds – it all came together,” he said. And the effect is mesmerising. Just as Shen Yun’s website says: “Here, one can get lost in thought. Here, time slows down. Why would you ever want to leave? ” Indeed, why would one want to leave this incredible performance? Only because the usher tells you that the show is over, and he needs to turn off the lights. HOROSCOPES

TAURUS 21 Apr – 21 May There is a huge amount of progress and reward ahead. Whether you are progressing a relationship, an investment or a property deal you will find that things move along very quickly. You want to slow things down to make sure there are no hitches; rest assured there are none because it is the right thing, at the right time. If this is regarding a relationship you will want to tell your lover your true feelings, and will be surprised that they feel the same. You should not be surprised at all; you are worthy of their love and attention.

VIRGO 24 Aug – 23 Sep

CAPRICORN 23 Dec – 20 Jan

There are some wrinkles over the next month or so. They are concerned with people not keeping to deadlines or not prepared to do what they were sent to do. It is not their fault; whoever gave them their instructions was very lax. On a personal note getting clothes altered or tailored for a particular event could be fraught with issues. Allow plenty of time for alterations and delivery.

Get that network of yours working for you. You have done more than enough for them in the past, and you are entitled to call in favours for a very important event. Whatever this project is – it will be a resounding success and if it has a financial component it will make a major profit. Make sure you take care of your health so you have the energy to take advantage of these opportunities.

GEMINI 22 May – 21 Jun

LIBRA 24 Sep – 23 Oct

AQUARIUS 21 Jan – 19 Feb

There is a tendency to feel as if you are in a rut; and that is perfectly fine! Stay there for a while, you are meant to be reflecting, observing, thinking. If you make some changes to your daily routines that will give you enough variety to keep you amused until this period is over (only a couple of weeks). It will also help to change your environment and if you can travel for pleasure so much the better.

Career people will be involved in a conflict of power – you can win the day quite easily because of your kindness and generosity. There are other important things to attend to. Some kind of competition will need practice or training. If this is an individual sport then you can expect to do exceptionally well. Team competition means you share the glory, but the feeling is just as fantastic.

You are skeptical when you need to be, and this is one of those times. No matter how plausible it all sounds, information is not as forthcoming as you would expect and you will threaten to walk away. These people cannot move forward without you, so that is to your advantage. Money is important with a request being granted or some documents being ‘stamped’, again to your advantage.

CANCER 22 Jun – 23 Jul

SCORPIO 24 Oct – 22 Nov

PISCES 20 Feb – 20 Mar

Life is very much like a whirlwind for you. It’s all rather fabulous but others are having a hard time keeping up. Part of you feels that you should slow down and let them catch up, the other side wants to ride the wave to the very end. The second option is the best, simply because if you stop you could miss out on something spectacular. Sounds selfish, but it’s not. You have worked hard.

Long term goals that you set years ago are coming into fruition. This is fabulous but don’t slow the pace because you are near achievement. Someone new will come into your life. This is a positive thing, and this person adds a new dimension to your life. There are major leaps with contracts or documents being presented to you for consideration.

You have been giving out a great deal of time and energy and would like to see who gives you some support when you ask for it. The people you do not expect will be the ones who step up without question. There are some major things to be achieved and it’s time to rethink who you want around you. You will now know exactly who they are, and you can move forward to success.

LEO 24 Jul – 23 Aug

SAGITTARIUS 23 Nov – 22 Dec

ARIES 21 Mar – 20 Apr

Something is about to be brought to your attention that normally you would not worry about. However, the person bringing it up is insistent that the situation is urgent; it will turn out to be something of nothing and the person needs to check their facts. Take a spontaneous trip out of town. A friend or partner would love to come with you and a great time will be had.

What you are offered is tempting but not worth the price. There are other more interesting things to explore. Plus with the financial climate as it is – it could be too much of a financial burden. Love is to the fore; a lover or potential lover is wanting to move forward right now; you are quite ready to do so. There will be a great deal of pleasure planning the next steps in your life.

There is some tension that needs to be addressed very quickly, especially in a team environment. If you want this sorted you need to listen and address their issues. If this is a family issue you may want to get a lawyer or accountant to check the facts so everyone is satisfied. If it is corporate – well once you have given them what they want – there are no more issues.

COVER STORY

Cover girl Internationally renowned illustrator, Kerrie Hess, created the stunning cover for this special anniversary edition of Cove. WORDS HENRIETTA DUPS

124

I discovered Kerrie Hess quite by accident, or perhaps it was serendipity, last year while scrolling through Instagram – I was instantly enamoured with her fashion illustrations so you can imagine my delight when my editor asked me to interview my latest ‘art crush’, who has created a stunning, original illustration to grace the cover of this edition of Cove magazine. Drawn to illustration from an early age, Kerrie didn’t believe she could pursue her passion as a career so she studied graphic design at QUT, thinking that working on magazines would be interesting. A 19-year-old Kerrie jetted over to London where she promptly landed a job in the art department

“It’s so weird I created my own perfect job which didn’t exist,” she recalls. After a year, Kerrie left The Independent and focussed solely on her own business, which has seen her live in Hong Kong, Paris and Melbourne. To date Kerrie’s clients have included; Chanel, Collette Dinnigan, Louis Vuitton, Myers, Net-aporter, Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue, to name a few. Kerrie draws her main inspiration from the renowned fashion illustrator René Gruau, famous for creating the Dior cosmetics ads in the 1950s and for his timeless fashion illustrations that graced the pages of numerous magazines during the same era. Her muses are Hitchcock blondes;

for The Independent Weekend Magazine. The editor quickly realised Kerrie’s talent and within a short time she was illustrating weekly for the magazine. With such fantastic exposure it wasn’t long before Kerrie started being approached to create illustrations for various fashion labels.

Grace Kelly and Tippy Hedren – she often leaves part of the facial detail out to give her heroines a mysterious allure, inviting the viewer to fill in the blanks with their own imagination. Paris is her city of choice when illustrating, finding the other major cities too modern and angular in their architecture.

Kerrie feels most comfortable working with watercolour and paper, never quite knowing how the dab of colour from the brush will spread on the paper. It also lends her illustrations real fluidity and perfectly portrays the drape and movement of the fabric in the garments as well as reflecting the fastpaced, ever-changing and impermanence of fashion. Despite her vintage inspiration, Kerrie is a contemporary artist in every sense of the word, embracing and harnessing internet technology and social media and utilising it to her advantage. “The internet has enabled me to work from anywhere, bridging the gap both culturally and geographically between Brisbane and the rest of the world,” she says. Following in the footsteps of fashion greats Nina Ricci and Lanvin, Kerrie is currently collaborating with parisienne brand Ladurée on a new set of packaging for their famous macarons. At the moment she is also working on a major project with cosmetics giant L’Oreal, which is quite ironic given that Kerrie paints mostly with make-up brushes. She finds that these are much softer than conventional paint brushes and give more interesting effects. So she will be literally applying make-up to each set of illustrations. Aside from all her commercial commissions, Kerrie also has a personal project producing limited edition numbered and hand-signed prints (1of 20), created purely for people to hang in their homes. La Vie en Rose, is her newly-released third limited edition print series. With Paris as the backdrop, the works feature her signature watercolour Hitchcock heroines redolent in Dior style black and fuschia gowns and Chanel style LBDs.
