Our Citizens
O
ut comes the sun and out come the bikes. In the last few years the amount of people cycling has risen to such dizzying heights that we can’t think of a single recent journey where we didn’t see at least a couple of cyclists.
B
ut what do the people of Guildford think about cycling in Surrey? Are our roads and forests good for cyclists to stretch their, um, wheels?
O
r should the roads be for motor vehicles? Some of our citizens are cyclists; some are not. And as you might guess, the answers we got were rather varied.
Trevor Adams | 62 | Architect
I
think it depends what type of cyclist you are. If you’re a road cyclist you’ve got to pick your time right because it’s a very car oriented area. But as a mountain biker, because it’s so rural, there are loads of places you can go. Even the big towns around Surrey are still very close to rural areas.
Mark Kent | 50 | Publican
T
he roads are full of potholes. They’re terrible. I’ve only been here for three years but it’s worse here than it is in London. It’s bad for motorists but it’s worse for cyclists. I’ve got two bikes, a mountain bike and a racing bike but I’m a fair weather cyclist really. As a motorist I make room for cyclists because I know what it’s like to be a cyclist.

I
’m staying with people in Godalming and they cycle. Their son cycles an awful lot. He does cross country cycling, downhill racing and all that sort of thing. He has done for years and really enjoys it. Occasionally when you get a cycle race and they don’t close off the road you have to be really careful and I can see that that would make some people (drivers) a bit irritated. But I cycle in Worcestershire so I’ve got sympathy for cyclists.
Rachel Shaw | 37 | Personal Trainer & Cancer Rehab Specialist
I
love it. I do it all the time. The Christmas Pie trail is brilliant and the North Downs is fantastic for off road. Just mind the busses! A bus driver wacked me round the head the other day. I cycled up to his open window and slapped him in the face!
Philip Hansford | 31 | Support Worker
I
t’s a great place to go out on your bike. There are a lot of cycle lanes and we’ve got the hills so it’s very nice to cycle round here. It seems with the tour of Britain going around there is a lot more interest now and a lot more respect for cyclists around Surrey.
Stacey Drew | 27 | Beauty Therapist
B Alex Reid | 24 | Online Marketing Executive
C
yclists are split into two different groups. One is the people who don’t have a car and need to cycle places and may enjoy doing it at the weekend. The second are the keen looking, lycra clad, middleaged people. The acronym is MAMILs (middle-aged men in lycra). They’re amateurs but they spend ridiculous amounts on their bikes and their lycra.
ox Hill has got so popular now because of the Olympics. It’s such a good route but you get novices who can’t get up the hill. I nearly ran a cyclist over yesterday. They weren’t indicating and swerved. And what bugs me is the people cycling home from work in the dark who don’t have lights on their bikes or high vis. You can’t see them. I think helmets should be compulsory for all cyclists and I think it’s important for children to see people wearing helmets.
Miranda Pilgrim | 55 | Housewife
I
t’s good. Some cyclists can be pushy and think they own the road but not all of them. There are a lot of them and I think there should be more cycle lanes.
Fancy shooting the breeze on some burning issues? Do you have something to say to the people? If the answer is yes, then we’d love to hear from you! Send your thoughts, dreams and queries to admin@tgmediagroup.co.uk

Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice: MEET THE HOSPICE CARE AT HOME TEAM
By Rich Lee Over the last few months we’ve been privileged to meet many of the staff and volunteers that make Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice in Farnham such a special place. But the Hospice’s expert care extends well beyond the walls of its wards and day care centre.
The Hospice Care at Home (HCaH) team provides vital support to patients who decide to spend their last days in the peace and comfort of their own home. Working in conjunction with the patient’s GPs and district nurse, the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice Care at Home Team bring their compassion and experience where it’s needed the most. “We are bringing the Hospice into the home,” says HCaH Team Leader, Debbie Phillips. “It’s the quality of the care, but just as important is the time that we can give people, especially the relatives.” Running a small team of highly trained and auxiliary nurses, Debbie says that they often visit eight patients a day, making 187 visits in June alone. “The criteria is end of life home care but sometimes the situation at home can be complex and require extra support and expertise,” she continues. “The most important thing is keeping people out of hospital when they don’t need to be there and when they don’t want to be there. It’s not so much about the dying process but the living with the disease.”
“We give them the choice and, of course, it’s very often their first choice,” agrees Noreen Baggott (Pictured) one of the HCaH team’s trained nurses who has worked for Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice for nearly 28 years. I asked Noreen what drew her to palliative care in the first place. “I wanted to work in Palliative Care because I’d seen people in the hospitals when they were dying. And I thought hospitals, while they are brilliant for when you need them in an emergency, if you’ve had an accident or get sick; they can’t provide the kind of sensitive care, time and guidance that people need when they are dying. But when I joined Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice I was so impressed with the level of care and support given to the patients and their families. And that care hasn’t changed. “We provide personal care to the patient at home and support and guidance for them and their family. It’s important for them to know as much normality as possible. We can give them as much time as they need.” And what is it like to experience so many patients’ last days as part of her job? “To see a patient
in their own home, at the end, is normally quite peaceful, quite calm. We’re always aware that the relatives have to live with the loss afterwards so part of our job is to get to know the families and their needs. It’s a privilege. It’s not a depressing job; we help the patients to live as best they can towards the end. They find laughter and different things they’re able to do and want to do with that time.” Of course, as they do in so many areas of the Hospice’s work, the team receive extra support from dedicated volunteers. “We also have three retired nurses who volunteer to sit with the patients at their home,” says Noreen. “The volunteers really keep Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice going. They’re invaluable to us.”

Guildford 2.0? By Rich Lee

A
s Bob Dylan once sang: “The times they are a’changing” and that couldn’t be truer for our county town and outlying areas. That is, once the sweeping developments proposed by the Council’s Draft Local Plan manifest themselves in nearly every area of public life, right across the borough up to the year 2031. Covering key issues like affordable housing, the economy and employment, infrastructure, sustainability and the Green Belt; the Draft Local Plan, intended to replace the one adopted in 2003, has been under rigorous public consultation since November 2013, and the community can still have their say on the issues that matter the most to them until 22nd September 2014. But what of the heart of Guildford itself? Nobody who has ever visited Guildford, much less those that have lived here for a time, could argue that the town centre doesn’t possess genuine character
GTG_Com_Guilarticle 2.0_F_8_9_10_11.indd 2
and charm. But then neither can we pretend that it’s the perfect Home Counties idyll it’s often made out to be. Narrow, choked pavements; ubiquitous stark, brick frontage; the lack of unique, independent businesses; the neglected lanes and riverside: There’s much that we would like to see improved about a town where concrete may have won over cobbles years ago but that hasn’t lost any of its potential to be a township dripping with both history and modern ideas. Fortunately that’s where another plan being developed in parallel with the Local Plan comes in: the Vision for Guildford Town Centre. Developed with renowned consultants Allies and Morrison, the Vision, albeit the current draft, proposes a profound facelift for the town, one that will reshape Guildford’s image and life for the residents and visitors to the town for decades to come.
Leader of the Guildford Borough Council Stephen Mansbridge told me in July: “I’m very excited about what the regeneration of the town centre could look like. We are a very important centre in the South East, if not the most important centre outside of London, and we have so much opportunity to make of that. Another councillor once told me: ‘Guildford’s so annoying; it has absolutely everything and yet it doesn’t really exploit it.’ But I believe it’s about really good coordination, so that what we have will attract people to come to the town and enjoy it and help local businesses prosper.” The Vision for Guildford Town Centre identifies nine key themes for development in and around the town. On the following page, we break down some of the most interesting proposals in the plan.

Nine Themes 1. Switching off Guildford’s Gyratory System It’s number one for a reason; the town’s heinous one-way system would be done away with, replaced with sensible two-way roads that navigate around a more pedestrianised town centre.
2. Revealing the River Wey Identified as an ‘obscured and undervalued’ resource for the last 50 years, the river would see wide changes in order to realise its potential as one of Guildford’s most attractive assets including redesigning the Walnut Tree Close into a multi-use area and a redeveloped cinema while new public squares for riverside business and attractions would spring up along its banks all the way to Millmead.
3. Seven New Public Spaces for Guildford In keeping with the vision of a more public and pedestrian Guildford, the plan proposes seven new thriving public spaces including Barrack Yard by the Electric Theatre, Walnut Tree Gardens, Malthouse Square connecting both sides of the river at the foot of the High Street and a new look North Street will get its own space in the form of Brewery Square.
4. Creating Streets for People The plan also highlights much of the currently unfriendly blank frontage that greets pedestrians along some of the towns cramped and busy pavements – such as those along Onslow Street, proposing better footfall and less clutter such as railings and bins. There is even mention of turning parts of the Friary Centre ‘inside out’ so that shop fronts line the street instead.
5. Going with Guildford’s Historic Grain This means a greater emphasis on, and development of, the historic lanes that intimately juxtapose the High Street and North Street and the creation of new spaces among them to reflect the character of the town’s trading tradition. A new heritage quarter will be created to cover the High Street and Guildford Museum and Castle.
6. Guildford: A Town in the Countryside The plan asserts Guildford’s natural place in the landscape and promises to preserve the countryside around the town, focussing development on predeveloped land and brownfill sites towards the town centre while preserving the famous sightlines from the town to the surrounding countryside.

COMMUNITY 7. Making Connections How Guildfordians get around the town is addressed extensively throughout the plan, with special consideration to better connect the University and Cathedral as well as overhaul parking, cycling and walking links and public transport, with even a ‘park and glide’ boat service being suggested to complement a park and ride bus service. Guildford station looks set to receive one of the most dramatic facelifts when it becomes the ‘Railway Esplanade’; a transport hub and modern gateway to the town.
AUGUST 2014
communications project will also receive £5million investment, further securing Guildford’s place on the technology map.
9. Building for Guildford’s Future Here the plan reiterates some key areas for development including North Street and the Friary which it envisions dividing into two blocks and inverting inward facing shops in the mall to greet the street outside.
Until 22nd September 2014 you can make your views heard on the future of Guildford. Simply drop by 25 Swan Lane Monday to Saturday 10am – 4pm, or visit www.getinvolved. guildford.gov.uk.
8. Developing Guildford’s Knowledge Economy As a centre for world-leading firms in technology, research and advanced manufacturing, Guildford has a thriving knowledge economy that the town centre vision seeks to grow, while balancing it with other vital sectors like retail. A new station is proposed to serve the research park, the hospital and the university. The University’s bold 5G mobile

OUR HISTORY: Magic Mushrooms by Will Knowlton Being a high quality writer with a keen eye for an earth-shattering story, I was out the other day and heard tale that the steeple of the Church in Ash was once, in the vernacular of modern architecture, “Wonky”. I decided to investigate as the pubs were yet to open.
S
trap in, because the facts you’re about to be bombarded with could sink a two-term government administration.
T
urns out there used to be a lot of fairies in Surrey and these little winged upstarts thought they had the monopoly on how to behave and how things were done. It seems they had a particular weed up their back sides about their groves or places where they’d dance, drink toad’s pee and whatever else fairies do once they’ve finished messing up the hay while the farmer lies p**ed in a field on cider: “Honestly lurve, they wur tha pixies wat done it!”
L
iving in Ash at this time was a man called Matthew who was old, cantankerous and a general all-round sod, according to sources. As was his practice, Matt went for a walk in the woods and didn’t return.
I
t was the kids of the village who noticed he’d gone because, like all impish servants of the goateed-one, these kids whiled away their summer by tormenting the old man. Someone mentioned that he’d gone off into the woods so the village went out to search for the old codger. After searching for a while and stopping for a quick-fire game of forty-forty,
some of the search party found Matt’s walking stick lying in the middle of a ring of broken toadstools.
N
ow phone Mount Brown and any instructor worth their salt will tell you that if you stumble into a Toadstool ring chances are you’ve been snatched by fairies and not more likely to have eaten a mushroom and gone wandering off “Johnny-Cash-eating-cakein-a-bush” high.
O
f course, in those days, every village was not only allotted a grumpy old man but also had a wise old woman. Barbara, as I shall now call her, lived on the edge of the village and it was her council that the kids and grown-ups went for after the shocking discovery of Matt’s disappearance.
B
abs announced that he would be being tried in the fairy court and made to continuously dance as punishment for his fungal infringement. A rescue should launch immediately lest he twerk himself to death. She requested that each child give up something special so
as to get him back. Having collected various trinkets from the children; ribbons, dolls, tamagotchi’s etc., she whipped out a cauldron and poured in the ingredients and set them on fire.
H
aving doubled the children’s Christmas list with one match she then announced that the ashes would be full of the village’s good intentions and created a form of oily rub from it and put it on a horse that, up until that point, was no doubt eating grass and wondering whether trotting on cobbles was bad for his fetlocks. The horse then grew wings and was sent by Babs off to the fairy Court to retrieve Matt and come home.
S
o down swoops the aerial horse, Matt jumps on and off they shoot back towards the real world. So far so good but all concerned had made one small but vital error. The horse had been instructed to come STRAIGHT back, STRAIGHT back. Which he did: into the steeple. I’ll just sit here and wait for my Paul Foot Award.

A fun filled Day at The Isle of Wight
Being summer, we’re sure you’ve all been desperately planning days out for yourselves and your families. Well, we at The Guide 2 Woking/Guildford decided that we wanted to roadtest one for you. The instructions were clear. It had to be for the whole family, it had to be somewhere different but at the same time not so distant that it’ll require a full family loadout including 48 hours of nappies. So we chose the Isle of Wight; still far enough away for an adventure but close enough to be “doable in a day”. Here’s how we got the most out of a day in farthest Hampshire.
Getting There: First off you’ll need a boat. A big boat. Wightlink Ferries operate between Portsmouth and Fishbourne and offer a car and foot passenger service at reasonable rates. Booking ahead is vital. There’s nothing worse than getting to the port and finding they have no space for you. Once on-board, grab a window booth and relax as you head out into the Solent, enjoying the impressive HMS Warrior and the imposing sight of both Fort Horse Sand and No Man’s Fort. The ferries have sandwich bars and for those of you with really wee ones there are baby changing facilities and microwaves to heat milk. Handy.
GTGW_LIFESTYLE_IOW_22_23.indd 2
Welcome to the Isle of Wight! It was time to get stuck into all the island has to offer. We thought the first thing should be a spot of running about. So our first point of call had to be Robin Hill Park. Robin Hill Adventure Park and Gardens is a massive theme park in the village of Downend, just outside Newport. Unlike many of its corporate mainland cousins, Robin Hill is owned and run by a local family, the Dabells, so this really gives it a lovely friendly atmosphere. The park has loads of activities for all ages and even boasts a Roman Villa. There are the Snake and Hillbilly Slides set into the hillside which are just awesome and the toboggan run
was a favourite as we embraced our inner bobsled team. Along with all the cool rides, Robin Hill is also packed full of wildlife, including the elusive red squirrel. We’d worked up an appetite and while the Park offers great food, we fancied something outside of the park and visited The Taverner’s in Godshill. It’s a really family friendly pub with amazing grub as well as a nice pint of ale for dad. Fuelled up, we were off on our next jolly. For us and many others, Blackgang Chine, south of Godshill, is an institution. Built back in the 1800s, it’s one of the UK’s oldest theme parks. Having walked between the giant smuggler’s legs, we knew we’d have a great time, although we found it more suited to ages 8

and below. There’s plenty to see and do and we enjoyed their new Area 5, which is full of moving, booming, life-sized dinosaurs. The T-Rex actually makes the floor tremble when it roars! Another favourite for us was the Wild West themed Buffalo Creek, complete with shooting gallery and Mexican themed café. Time was now slipping away but we thought we’d fit in one last thing on the way back to Fishbourne and home. Slap bang in-between Blackgang and the ferry port is the Isle of Wight Steam Railway. Operating as a heritage railway, the trains travel along five and a half miles of unspoiled, beautiful countryside from Smallbrook Junction, through the small village of Havenstreet and on to Wootton station. The line’s main station and depot is at Havenstreet and this is where you should head to enjoy these beautiful trains. Run largely by volunteers, the route chugs along from June to September and over the August bank holiday weekend the railway organises the Island Steam Show. This is a whole day of steam featuring displays of various steam machines including traction engines and steam fair equipment. After that we were chasing the sun and heading home from Fishbourne. The Isle of Wight is such a lovely place to visit, it manages the neat trick of being right here but making you feel like you’ve all gone on a great adventure overseas.

GuilFest 2014 A Shining Success
By Rich Lee
It was the GuilFest we’d all hoped it would be: three days of sun, music, dancing, laughter, food and friendship at Stoke Park… The glorious sunshine burned away any bad memories of 2012’s ill-fated washout, allowing ‘Guilfesters’ to leave their wellies behind as they flocked to the park in their thousands to enjoy one of the most colourful and eclectic line-ups in GuilFest’s long history.
Friday
Friday’s pace was relaxed with an easy, ambling throng of happy visitors weaving among the many stalls and stages. As the day went on, they saw some electric performances from the likes of Jamie Lenman at the Big Cheese Cave followed by a blistering set from The Blackout, while over at the Richmond Hyundai Main Stage, the Fun Lovin’ Criminals kept it cool in the heat only for Bob Geldof and the Boomtown Rats to turn it back up for a thrilling performance that crowned the day off perfectly.

GuilFest truly hit its stride on Saturday though and saw pop twins Jedward draw a massive crowd to the Good Time Guide Stage. Families were out in force, befitting such a family friendly festie such as GuilFest, with children clearly enjoying the delights of the fun-filled Kidszone and Sportszone.
Saturday
Rock fans got storming sets from the likes of Soulfly and the Buzzcocks, and pop-lovers were privileged to hear Sam Bailey’s stunning voice in person at The Good Time Guide Stage. But the real party belonged to the Richmond Hyundai Main Stage thanks to ecstatic performances from Naughty Boy and Kool & the Gang.

GuilFest 2014
Sunday kept the good times coming with early crowd-pleasers such as Shane Richie and the Prelude and Rock Choir followed by a stunning afternoon set from legendary DJ Norman Jay MBE that had the crowds grooving to feel-good soul and funk. Kane FM’s Funky End Dance Tent barely missed a beat the whole festival though, with revellers regularly packing the tent for dance icons like Sigma and Shadow Child. And The Good Time Guide Stage saw country singing twins Ward Thomas score a whole new legion of fans thanks to their easy charm and gorgeous, sunny harmonies.
Sunday
The day ended in glorious fashion thanks to the Sugar Hill Gang’s unfailingly infectious ‘Rapper’s Delight’, while the Human League delivered a dazzling show to close out the festival, with their stream of classic hits and a stage every bit as stylish as their iconic image. So could this mean a long and secure future for one of Guildford’s most treasured cultural
assets? Only time will tell, but it’s fair to say that GuilFest’s return in 2014 (helped hugely by the weather) managed to hit all the right notes. The organisers successfully delivered three days of unforgettable music and entertainment, with all the easy-going, friendly atmosphere that helps set this event apart as one of the best medium sized festivals in the country.

2 cloves of garlic, crushed 1 tsp Soft brown sugar 1 tbsp. Balsamic vinegar Olive oil 8 sheets filo pastry 100g soft goat’s cheese
1. Gently fry the red onion in 2 tsp of olive oil for 10 minutes until soft then add the thyme, garlic, sugar and vinegar. Cook for a further 5 minutes, stirring constantly to stop the garlic from burning, and then turn off the heat and leave to cool slightly. 2. Place the red onion mix in a food processor, along with the beetroot, and pulse to combine. Season to taste. 3. To make the parcels, start by cutting the sheets of filo pastry in half widthways. Put one of the pieces of filo on a work surface and brush with olive oil. Put another piece over it at right angles to make a cross and brush with olive oil again. Lay a third piece diagonally, as if you were
making a star shape, brush with oil, then top with the final piece, diagonally, to complete the ‘star’, and brush with oil. 4. Place a heaped tablespoon of the beetroot mix in the centre of the pastry and top with 25g of goat’s cheese. Fold up the sides of the filo and scrunch them at the top so they hold together. Brush all over with olive oil. Make three more parcels in the same way. 5. Place all the parcels on a lightly oiled baking sheet and bake in a preheated oven, 200ºC/gas 6, for 15-20 minutes, or until crisp and lightly browned. 6. Leave to cool for 5 minutes before serving with a mountain of rocket.

WHERE TO EAT: The Anchor in Ripley
by Rich Lee
W
hile The Anchor in Ripley doesn’t claim to be a ‘GastroPub’, hewing closer in spirit to a friendly, family-orientated village pub, you’d be lucky (if that’s even the word) to find neither a single breaded scampi or, at the other end of the chronically overdone pub food spectrum, pork belly.
B
ut you’d expect no less since the pub was taken over last year by one of Ripley’s best known residents, Michelin-starred Chef Steve Drake and his wife Serina, owners of the eponymous Drake’s restaurant over the road, who along with friends Chris and Lisanne Mealing, breathed new life into the Grade II listed building with a crisp, white paintjob inside and a talented new team including one of Drake’s best young chefs Michael WallPalmer handling cooking duties.
T
heirs is a summer menu that fully embraces the season, with tantalising pairings of soft fruits with fish and meat that sing with intriguing flavours
and textures. Such was the case with a starter of delicately pan-fried grey mullet spiked with sweet, sharp raspberries and mellowed with softer beetroot. Perched on top of charred watermelon, the smokier-than-usual flavour of the fruit complemented the fish subtly and superbly.
I
ts fellow starter, a generous salad of salty and succulent air-dried ham, tumbled with juicy, fragrant peaches and even more aromatic pecorino cheese and basil was a delight, given a little micro crunch from black poppy seeds.
M
ains upped the ante with a simply decorated dish of lamb, softly-braised finger of fennel and a rich mash; the meaty, mouth-watering puck oozing flavour with that little kiss of anchovy that lamb loves so well. My own cep casserole with truffle marinated potatoes defied expectation; it came wrapped in a silky spinach parcel and a rich cream sauce that hummed with exquisite notes from garlic and truffle. It was as
musky and heady as a woodland stroll and just as enchanting.
D
esserts brought an exceptional dish of strawberries and balsamic marshmallows, blobbed with a little balsamic reduction, the whole set off wonderfully by a lemon thyme cream in between crisp pastry that brought the scent of a cottage garden indoors. So too did a frozen lavender mousse, scattered with blueberries, coulis and given some crunch from a ginger granola. If lavender as an ingredient isn’t to everyone’s taste, a dessert like this is good place to turn them around.
I
t’s thanks to restaurants like Drakes and wonderful coffee shops like Nest and Pinnock’s that Ripley has long been one of the jewels in Surrey’s food scene. Now, with The Anchor serving such enticing food alongside some seriously good wines and ales, the village’s top-heavy crown just got a little heavier.

by Rich Lee Whether it’s warm outside or not, there’s just nothing like ice cream. And for when you want to make an occasion of it, there’s a great choice of ice cream parlours scattered around Surrey, all offering handmade ice creams in astounding flavours. We hit the road for a frozen fix of our own and found four top parlours ready to help you keep your cool this summer.
Crockford Bridge Farm New Haw Road, Addlestone As much fun as pick-your-own season can be, everyone knows that it can be hot and tiring work. Which is why the Ice Cream Parlour at Crockford Bridge Farm is yet another genius stroke from the pick-your-own pioneers, allowing visitors to cool off with some of the best ice cream for miles. Selling 24 unique flavours from the award winning Gelateria Danieli – a small Italian family business based in Richmond, the parlour offers silky smooth, low fat ice cream and sorbets in mouth-watering varieties like salted caramel, bakewell tart, Dulce de leche and a heavenly strawberry ice cream made with Crockford Bridge Farm’s own fresh and flavoursome fruit. www.crockfordbridgefarm.co.uk
Loseley Ice Cream It’s perhaps worth mentioning that one of the most established brands of Surrey ice cream continues to be a favourite and is still found in shops and venues around the county. Although, as we discovered, Loseley Ice Cream hasn’t actually been made here for fifteen years. It’s now produced in High Wycombe by Beechdean Bakery. Regardless, it remains a delicious treat wherever it can be found.

Shere Delights 1 Middle St, Shere Perhaps all that picture-perfect Shere needed to complete its idyllic image was a quaint olde sweet shop and possibly an ice cream parlour. Well, thanks to Gillian Akroyd that’s exactly what they got when she opened up both under the name of Shere Delights. “My daughter and I were feeding the ducks in Shere just after Christmas 2011,” she says. “We were standing facing the empty flower shop, which now houses Shere Delights, wondering what I would do if the shop were mine. It was literally a light bulb moment and 2 months later, Shere Delights opened its door to the public.” So it was and so the shop has become a favourite of locals and visitors to Shere drawn to its ice cream counter and fantastic selection of flavours. The shelves above hold jars of every sweet your inner child fondly remembers, and for your inner grown up they also sell some of the finest artisan chocolates available. This year, the emporium have also gone mobile with their first vintage, 1940s style ice cream bicycles that can be hired for weddings, parties and corporate functions. www.sheredelights.co.uk
Creams – Woking
Dylan’s Ice Cream Barn – Haslemere
19-21 Chertsey Road, Woking
1 Junction Place, Wey Hill, Haslemere
A departure from your traditional ice cream parlour, Creams instead boasts a neo-soaked, nightclub interior, glinting surfaces, booths and al fresco seating – and more ice cream than you can shake a cornetto at. Seriously; one look at their gleaming display offers a selection of flavours as tantalising as they are –occasionally – bewildering (looking at you, Red Bull).
You’d be forgiven for thinking that Dylan is the eponymous mastermind behind Dylan’s Ice Cream, but that would actually be Ben Govier who mastered the gelato arts while at University in 2007 and then sold his creations from an ice cream van back home in Liphook.
And while you could go down the cone route, their sundaes are truly unmissable: towering glass glories packed with scoops of whatever flavour you like, spiked with wafers, fruit and drizzled with sweet syrups. I get brain-freeze just thinking about them. It’s no wonder Creams have become popular for kids’ birthdays as well as adults indulging their inner child along with their sweet tooth.
They proved such a hit that Ben has since opened Dylan’s Milk Barn in Haslemere, a fresh, cheery ice cream diner offering his uber-cool recipes made with milk from dairy cows down the road in Petersfield. They include distinctive and unique flavours such as malt, honeycomb, plum crumble and, um, brown bread. Oh, and Dylan himself? That’ll be Ben’s black Labrador. Everyone needs a mascot, right? www.dylansicecream.co.uk

SUMMER SUN? Make sure you’re protected…
Even if you’ve been working on that tan since the first day the sun showed Britain its shining face, you still need to keep applying a good daily sunscreen. Every product is hand selected by founder Amanda McGillivray, who chooses only the highest quality organic personal care products.
Before sunbathing...
All Natural Mineral Sunscreen Containing mineral zinc oxide, tropical oils, botanical extracts and anti-oxidant vitamins, this product naturally protects from the sun’s rays and is particularly good for those who suffer from heat rash and anyone with sensitive skin. The range is available in SPF 8, SPF 15 and the water resistant sports version in SPF 25. SPF 8 - £12.99 (120ml) SPF 15 - £14.99 (120ml) SPF 25 (water resistant sport) - £15.95 (120ml)

AFTER sunbathing...
Unless you’ve been sunbathing in your birthday suit the likelihood is you’ll have tan lines. Try the below product to match up those white patches.
Après Sol Moisturizer One of the biggest causes of ageing of the skin is dehydration. This luxurious blend of natural ingredients, including mango seed and cocoa butter, rehydrates the skin and can be used as a general moisturizer as well as an after sun lotion. This product can also be used by men to soothe skin after shaving.
£12.95 (120ml)
It’s also a brilliant product for starting your tan off if you’ve not been able to catch much sun so far – just remember to wear an SPF on top before hitting the beach.
A LITTLE COLOUR BOOST Lavera Natural Tanning Lotion Organic plant essences and Aloe Vera gel moisturize the skin leaving it firm and smooth. With Vitamin E and green tea this natural tanning lotion is easy to apply and doesn’t leave streaks – we love it!

Beauty Review by Wizzi Seaton
Hot Lava Shell Relax Massage at Zeal Beauty Spa Instantly intrigued by the country cottage meets beach-chic décor, broad grins adorning the faces of customers and gleaming trophy proudly propped up on the counter, I was welcomed into the homey atmosphere of Zeal Beauty Spa… Although it has been less than six months since Zeal opened for business on Wharf Street in Godalming, this friendly spa has already secured its place in the community, winning the 2014 Godalming Compete on the Street award. Along with the waxes, massages, manicures and pedicures you would expect from such an establishment, Zeal also offer Mama Mio pregnancy massages and a selection of exotic Hot Lava Shell massages. As one of the few spas in the area to offer these treatments I went to therapist Charlene to experience the 45-minute Relax Massage. Using heated Tiger Clam shells from the Tropics this massage is designed to realign the body by easing tension in the back and relieving the effect of stress. Having admitted to a four out of five on the stress scale (five being extremely stressed) it was clear that this treatment would serve as the perfect remedy to what had been a taxing week. As Charlene worked from my neck down to my tailbone I could feel the satisfying pop of tight muscles gradually giving in to the varying pressure applied.
Simultaneously the soothing effect of the heated shells carried my cares away. By the end even my shoulders, the unfortunate bearers of most of my tension, were loosening up. With a gentle warning that they may ache later on, Charlene prescribed a hot water bottle before bed to help keep them loose and ensure a good nights sleep. Once my back had been sufficiently tenderized I lay alleviated as Charlene covered me in a warm blanket and massaged my ankles, heals, pads and toes before leaving me to slowly return to wakefulness. After drifting down the stairs to reluctantly head back out to the real world I could smell the luscious mango oils used to discombobulate my body and mind, and I wafted out of Zeal nonchalant and unruffled. If, like me, you tend to store the daily stresses of life in your shoulders and back then head to the expert hands at Zeal Beauty Spa and give this massage a try. You won’t regret it.

Compacts: The Beautiful Story of Make-Up

he humble compact - the staple of the handbag. It seems remarkable to think that such a ubiquitous piece of kit represents something so culturally significant. For while we adorn ourselves with powder cake in the train or in a traffic jam, we are actually showcasing a very modern phenomenon – namely, the need for instant gratification and how essential portability has become. In a sense, this exhibition is the 21st century condition in a microcosm. Or, you know, it’s a good excuse to see some gorgeous vintage beauty trinkets. Depends on how you see it really…
touching up your lip gloss or applying a smidge of mascara, just think that less than a century ago your lengthy home mirror sessions were your last chance to get your look just so… An array of breath-taking compacts will be set in context with all the accoutrements that made female glamour possible, from hairstyling accessories, creams and perfumes to the finishing touches of powder, mascara, lipstick and rouge. In short: this is an absolute must for those of us who realise that, in a social and historical context, beauty really is far more than skin deep…
‘Glamour on the Go. Compacts: The Beautiful Story of Make-Up’ will be on show at The Lightbox from 26 July – 28 September 2014, entrance is free. For further information please visit www. thelightbox.org.uk.
Between now and the 28th September, The Lightbox will be hosting ‘Compacts: The Beautiful Story of Make-Up’, an exhibition that will lead you on a journey through the glamour industry, with beauty essentials from the Pre and Post-War decades and beyond, presenting a remarkable piece of social history for all to explore. The exhibition, held in association with The British Compact Collectors’ Society, charts the tale of the portability of beauty products and glamour accessories as they moved from the dressing table to the handbag. Bountiful Beauty S It’s fair to say, that in Surrey, we enjoy some outstanding beauty spots. Whether they are hidden gems in the town centre or view-points scattered over the Surrey Hills; within a short travelling distance you’re likely to stumble across some stunning landscapes that you could not quite believe are on your doorstep. We took a hop, skip and a jump around the county and here, below, are the delights that we found…
Mayfield Lavender
Found in the North Surrey Downs near Ewell, Mayfield Lavender is surely one of the most colourful places in Surrey, key times to see the fields in all their glory happen from the beginning of July till the end of August.
G2G_LifeS_Beautspots_Lav_F_52_53.indd 2
Open from 9am – 6pm up until September. Pedestrians are granted free access to the fields and those travelling via car and in need of parking are asked to pay £2. For more info visit www. mayfieldlavender.com or indeed make the trip head over to Mayfield Lavender Field, Croydon Lane, Banstead, SM7 3BE
If you feel inspired to plant your own lavender field in your back garden then you can also visit their nurseries over at 139 Reigate Rd (near Driftbridge Audi Garage),Epsom, KT17 3DW.

Located between Guildford and Dorking, this gorgeous village is the definition of a picture post card. The resplendent village green invites you to bask in its luscious green grass.
You can’t help but feel on holiday as you reach the shores of the mighty Frensham Pond. Surrounded by rich wildlife and heathland, an afternoon on the pond makes for a wonderful day out.
We love this place! The fourth highest peak in Surrey, whether you’re at the top or the bottom, Holmbury hill is just an awe-inspiring place.

Located near Guildford, Puttenham Common provides some great walks for the family. The common is steeped in history and is registered as a site of scientific importance, due to its archaeological finds.
Found near Elstead Village, this place is sooo pretty. Running along the side of the River Wey, a hive of natural wildlife activity occurs on a daily basis.
South East of Farnham, the wooded village of Tilford reminds us of some far distant land where fairies roam the trees spreading their fairy dust, transforming the landscape into a beautiful scene. Well it turns out there are no fairies in the trees, Tilford is just beautiful and it’s all natural. While away an afternoon on the green watching the cricket, supping on something cool.

Sports News WALK TEN AT HAMPTON COURT PALACE 30-8-14 A great way to raise money for charity and get a bit of exercise in as well. Oh, and it’s also at one of the most beautiful areas in the UK as well. The 10km walk gives you a chance to enjoy after-dark access to Hampton Court’s famous palace. What’s more, once the walk is over you and your friends can settle down with a nice picnic and enjoy live music and a spectacular firework display. The walk is all in aid of Marie Currie Cancer care who offer nursing to people living with terminal cancer and other illnesses. AUGUST 2014
SUGAR AND NUTRI T
WHY SO S For the majority of human existence we’ve been meat eating, vegetable gathering Omnivores. And it’s only since oil that eating things from other parts of the world has become normal. Also it’s good to point out that it’s only in the last few decades that food has changed from being grown to being manufactured. Marketing is conning the general public. Names of additives on labels look like they’re written in Klingon and we really don’t know what we’re consuming on a daily basis. Products advertising low-fat are extremely high in sugar and products advertising low-sugar are high in fat. It’s all about profit margin. Whatever word is used to describe natural and healthy food becomes abused because it’s profitable. 200 years ago, the average person consumed about 2 pounds of sugar every year. By the 70’s that number was up to around 120 pounds. Nowadays it’s around 150 pounds. Refined sugar comes from sucrose extracted from raw sugar cane or sugar beets. Unless you’re eating raw foods to get your sugar fix then you’re eating refined sugar. Sugar is made of carbohydrates which are converted into glucose for energy. Our bodies have a mechanism that stores excess glucose in the form of fat.
Now, remember, we were designed to be hunters-gatherers, not to watch Morning TV. Your body’s not meant to live this way. Every gram of sugar you eat over your daily allowance is converted to storage. People get obese because their bodies are preparing for a winter that’s not coming.
Let’s look at some of the pitfalls:
Hypoglycaemia In a nut shell your pancreas makes insulin to control blood sugar levels, then the insulin transports glucose to cells and left overs to the liver for storage. If there’s too much, there’s an excess of insulin which then removes too much sugar. The result is low blood sugar, which can cause depression and increased agitation.
Diabetes Mellitus This is similar to Hypoglycaemia but backwards. The pancreas does not produce enough insulin; this is a result of continuous over-consumption.
Depression Sugar makes your body use B-vitamins, calcium and magnesium for digestion. If you get severe mineral and vitamin depletion you’ll suffer from fatigue, depression and anxiety. Not exactly the mind-set that will make it easy to get to the gym.

RI TION:
O SWEET?
By Will Knowlton
What about Sweeteners? Sucrose and HFCS (High Fructose Corn Syrup) As the name suggests they’re extremely high in fructose. The problem with this is that only your liver can metabolise it. Not good because more calories are converted into VLDL (very-low-density lipoprotein) and fat. VLDL is bad cholesterol.
Artificial Sweeteners (Saccharin, Acesulfame, Aspartame, Neotame, and Sucralose) The fact of the matter is there’s little point in going into whether sweeteners are a good alternative to sugar. According to a study done by Harvard, sweeteners were approved back in the day because there’s no evidence that they cause cancer and at the end of the day it’s a good way to combat obesity right? What grinds my gears is that these studies were done using smaller amounts of diet fizzy drinks (on rats), less than any person would actually consume in a bottle from a shop. No one really knows what comes from extended use of artificial sweeteners so if you don’t mind being a guinea-pig, crack on. Now there’s evidence that these additives are actually addictive as well. An animal study was conducted where rats were exposed to intravenous cocaine and oral saccharine. The ma jority of the rats actually chose the artificial sweetener over the cocaine!
Now What? The best forms of glucose that you can get are from whole fruit because they’re nutrient-dense, high in fibre and low in glycaemic load. If we can choose fruit to satisfy our sweet tooth and water with our meals instead of coke and chocolate, the hard part is done.

WITNESS THE FITNESS SMOOTHIE by Will Knowlton Well, we’re getting towards the end of the summer now and, of course, you’ve achieved all those fitness goals from the earlier months. You are now at the pinnacle of buffness and want to carry this on into the autumnal months.
Yes, yes exercise is key, but here’s a little recipe for a lovely smoothie to keep you looking and feeling great. The benefits of this little monster include improved brain function, smoother skin and lowered blood pressure too. And there maybe a little soupçon of protein to ease that muscle repair. Oh and it’s great for veggies as well.
THE MAGIC INGREDIENTS: A good handful of fresh Blueberries Half a Banana 1 table spoon of Chia Seeds (Bursting with Omega-3 Fatty Acids by the way) 1 scoop of Hemp Protein 1 tea spoon of Greens Powder (check out MyProtein.com for this and hemp protein) A handful of Almonds
What all these wonderful little things do once you’ve slam-nommed them:
• • • • •
Blueberries contain antioxidants and your noggin and skin will thank you for them. Bananas are great for blood pressure because they are full of potassium. As well as the afore-mentioned Omega-3s Chia seeds are also full of antioxidants that fight damage done to skin cells. The amino acids in plant protein are essential to building lean muscle and help burn fat. L-carnitines help your body metabolise fat and are key to your system controlling blood sugar levels and you’ll find them hiding in the almonds.

HEY! SIX PACK by Will Knowlton
Ah yes, that elusive six-pack. You know it’s there but it just won’t come out. Well, all the advice that’s out there shouts about lowering your “Body Fat Percentage”. Guess what? Believe the hype. Burning off that last little layer of fat will reveal what lies beneath. Trouble is, as with all things, it’s easier to say than do. So we looked into a few useful hints and collated them into a little handy bullet point list that will fit perfectly on your fridge. (Not that we’re advocating cutting up our hallowed tome but you get the meaning.)
•
First off, take a look at your diet. Add more food with lower energy. You’re looking to increase the amount of veg, fish and (lean) meats.
•
This next tip is the one that has everyone jibber-jabbing about whether it’s right or not. I’m going to roll with it though: Eat. Try and have a healthy snack-type-meal every couple of hours. Missing a meal is pretty counter-productive because your body panics and stores fat.
•
Keeping your body hydrated is really important; make sure you drink a full glass of water at meal times. To burn fat your body needs water so fuel up soldier. You don’t need to be a nutritional scientist to know that fizzy drinks and flavoured lattes from Dr Evil’s front company hold empty and damaging calories.
•
Eat boat loads of fish. Fish like salmon contain Vitamin D which is great for muscle maintenance. Yes, the sun does zap you with Vit D but if I tell you to do that you’ll just hit the park or the river with an afternoon’s supply of cider. I know because I’ve been there; it doesn’t work.
•
Ok so exercise; you’ve got to try and say that at least 3 days a week you’re going get into beast mode and do some intensive cardio. Think rowing, swimming or spinning classes. You could even go Mike Tyson and get the skipping rope out.
•
Bro, do you even lift? Crazy as it sounds to some of you racing-snakes out there but hitting the weight area in the gym can burn an extra 1,050 calories. So get on those squats, bench presses and deadlifts because they focus on multiple muscle groups.
•
Hot body, hot food. The spicy stuff hidden away in chilli peppers turns the heat up on your metabolism. According to several journals, adding a tablespoon of chopped peppers to a meal can give your metabolism a spike, all be it temporary, of 23%.
•
Going out socialising with mates at a restaurant is part of life, and while you don’t want to be a monk, don’t drop the ball when you’re out either. For once, actually read the whole menu and try to stick to dishes that are made with steamed, baked and boiled ingredients rather than baked camembert.

‘Me’
What do you do?
Dylan White The Record Plugger
How did you get into it?
EXTRAORDINARY LIVES
LOCAL PEOPLE
I’m what’s known in the music industry as a Record Plugger. I take CDs or digital files to radio producers and DJs at Radio One, Radio Two, 6 Digital and other national radio stations. Every artist has a manager, press agent, booking agent and a plugger. So I’m known in a pool of about forty people who get hired by ma jor labels to promote artists, be they established or just releasing their first record.
As you do when you’re young, I played in bands. It’s like sport: you’ve got to get on the pitch when you’re young and then go into management later. I then went on to manage a band and I hired a plugger. After a while he said: “You should be a plugger.” And I said alright then, give me a job. So I went on to plug and promote bands like the Beautiful South and the Farm, Suede and St Etienne for Creation Records where I got the job plugging the biggest band at the time, Oasis. From then I went on to plug U2. I kept them ‘young’, kept them played on the likes of Radio One and CD:UK, from the ‘Beautiful Day’ single and over three albums.
What do you enjoy most about what you do? It’s like John Lennon said, and it’s what I tell my kids: ‘Find a job you love and you’ll never have to work again’. I love Mondays; I can’t wait for Monday mornings.
Proudest moment? There’s a lot of them. Working with Oasis, when it kicked off with ‘Wonderwall’ and ‘Don’t Look Back in Anger’, I got them to play ‘Come Feel the Noise’ by Slade! I’m also very proud to have worked with Paul Weller during his resurgent years with the likes of ‘Wildwood’ and ‘Stanley Road’.
How did you first get involved with GuilFest? For fifteen years I’ve worked with Tony Scott to do GuilFest’s radio and TV promotion. It began originally through local radio and then I got Radio 2 involved from 2003 – 2007. That helped boost the festival’s prominence in the ‘football league’ of festivals. It got Paul Weller to play GuilFest among others. That wouldn’t have happened if the promotion hadn’t been there to put GuilFest on the map.
What does it take to be a record plugger? You’ve got to believe in music. You’ve got to know your stuff. You’ll get caught out if you’re a bullsh**ter. I’ve never plugged a record that is crap; I may have plugged genres I’m not personally mad about but I can still appreciate a great urban record or a great rap record. And plug it accordingly…
What do you enjoy about living in Guildford? I moved to Guildford in 1999 because of my wife, Nicky, who came from here. I met her when she worked for Steve Wright as one his ‘posse’ on the radio. I love living in Guildford; it’s a great place to live. The only problem is that it’s a bit crowded and it lacks natural venues for live music, which is an issue.
