Your your Community News CLANDON HOUSE RISING FROM THE ASHES
Nearly eighteen months since the fire devastated the National Trust treasure, part of Clandon House is now temporarily open to the public by way of a viewing walkway which will take visitors from the Saloon towards the famed Marble Hall. The National trust are hard at work at Clandon Park, in an ongoing effort to secure the manor that was so badly damaged by the fire that broke out in April 2015. The team spent many months stabilising the shell of the building, proceeding carefully so as not to eliminate any avenues for future restoration. While certain aspects had to be addressed as priorities under pressure of time, the project co-ordinators remain adamant that due care and consideration be taken to progress the restoration as sensitively as possible; their aim is to retain the integrity of the building and simultaneously to make it relevant to the lives of 21st century visitors. Having cleared through 12ft of debris and salvaged thousands of trays of artefacts, The National Trust is now faced with many
decisions to make about the direction of the restoration. Visitors are being encouraged to leave their suggestions for the future of the building with the Trust. The building currently stands, cleared and open to visitors, who can discover more about the building in its naked state, such as the beautiful hidden arches that provided the structure behind the squared window fronts. The house still smells faintly of fire but the solid brick walls of the interior remain, to reveal immaculate brickwork. A Jacobean construction had previously stood on the site, but rather than extend or renovate the existing building, the Onslow’s commissioned an entirely new display of wealth. This place is still an extremely interesting site to visit- the exposed red bricks evoke a feeling of raw, elemental new beginnings rather than thoughts of the cold death of a building. Although grieving continues for the grandeur and beauty that was lost, the significance of this place has been far from extinguished. An architectural competition will be launched in the spring. The aspiration is to restore the most architecturally significant rooms on the
ground floor to their 1730s prime, while the upper levels are being considered for flexible space where exhibitions and performances could take place. There may even be a restaurant on the roof with a view across the landscape to make it an attraction not just as good as, but substantially better than before. The fire will remain a mark on this building, but not its defining brand. Fundraising will take place to secure new collections for the house and perhaps restore the gardens to their 1730s design, providing a new view from an older perspective that would certainly not have been afforded had the fire not broken out. This sleeping phoenix will surely rise from the ashes. Visit Clandon Park for this October and enter the walkway into the Saloon, from where you’ll be able to see into the room most synonymous with Clandon Park; the Marble Hall. You’ll also be able to visit the gardens, where a number of panels will share the journey so far and detail what the future holds for Clandon.

WOMEN’S SUPPORT CENTRE: NEW BEGINNINGS ARTS AWARDS 2016 The Lightbox gallery and museum is delighted to welcome back the ‘Women’s Support Centre: New Beginnings Arts Awards’ exhibition for the sixth year. Until the 16 October, the Art Fund Prize Gallery will showcase a diverse range of artistic talent displayed by women in contact with the Criminal Justice System in Surrey. The Women’s Support Centre was established in May 2010. This Woking based organisation supports women in contact with the Criminal Justice System, women who have vulnerabilities or risks which might lead them to becoming involved in the Criminal Justice System, or women who are at risk of exclusion or exploitation. Involvement in the arts provides the opportunity for women to discover new talents and passions they may have not known existed, as well as being a positive outlet to express their emotions and thoughts. This exhibition recognises the achievements of these inspiring and talented women. It enables women to develop beneficial life skills they can use to lead a more stable and fulfilling life. In addition to the positive growth women can experience by being a part of this program, they are also given a sense of community and support. This annual exhibition is designed to inspire the women involved, but also to bring awareness and understanding to the local community of the issues facing women in contact with the Criminal Justice System. The theme of ‘In a Land Far, Far Away’ is designed to encourage reflection on the artist’s sense of place – whether that is their ‘real’ world or an imaginary or fantasy world elsewhere. Each artist has interpreted the theme in a variety of ways. Some have been inspired by nature and poetry while
others chose to depict the juxtaposition between their past lives with the optimism of the future. This year’s winner in the adult category is the inspiring work ‘Finding Freedom’ by Jenny. This piece uses watercolours to depict a tranquil setting which reflects the peace and happiness the artist is longing to find and keep. The winner of the young women category, Georgia, used her love of elephants in her work ‘Painting for Donna’. Visitors to the exhibition will be given the opportunity to vote for the winner of the People’s Choice Award, which will be announced after the exhibition closes. To celebrate the opening of the ‘Women’s Support Centre: New Beginnings Art Awards’ The Lightbox hosted a private view with over eighty people in attendance. TV personalities Eamonn Holmes and wife Ruth Langsford introduced the exhibition. Eamonn said ‘It is a wonderful demonstration of how women can be encouraged to build skills they didn’t know they had…They had no idea that they had this extra layer to their persona and discovering it gives them great confidence’. With food provided by The Clink, an organisation providing support and training for prisoners, the evening was a success. The exhibition will be on show at The Lightbox from 10 September 2016 – 16 October 2016 and entrance is free. For further information please visit thelightbox.org.uk. ‘Women’s Support Centre: New Beginnings Arts Awards 2016’ will go on to tour to seven other locations in the Surrey area.

SURREY HILLS COW PARADE: ASSEMBLED!
Last month’s Surrey Hills Festival of Food and Drink was the perfect setting to witness Surrey Hills Cow Parade’s happy herd all in one place… Over 2500 people headed out into the Surrey Hills on Saturday 3rd September to attend the very first – and very gloriousSurrey Hills Festival of Food and Drink at Coverwood Farm, which brought together some of finest food and drink producers from Surrey and the South East. But one special highlight was seeing the 64 beautiful bovines that made up the Surrey Hills Cow Parade all in one spot. We at The Guide 2 Surrey have been proud to follow these marvellous moos since the community art and charity project launched earlier this year. And you clearly fell in love with them too, as people from all over the county went out in search of them. “It was wonderful to really celebrate CowParade Surrey by bringing together all the cows for the very first time,” said Tim Metson, CowParade Leader and co-owner of Coverwood Farm.
““There has been so much interest and passion for our cows – it’s truly humbling to have engaged with so many people. While the cows were out on Parade throughout Surrey and London we had over 4,500 app downloads and 21,288 check-ins! The festival also provided the opportunity to announce the winner of the CowParade Surrey app competition, Carl Harmer, a chef from Guildford. A total of 88 people had managed to collect all the cows which were dotted across Surrey and London this summer. The first prize of a luxury holiday to Mauritius was donated to Chris by Kuoni Travel. “I’m over the moooon!” Carl said. “I have had a great time searching for all the cows in and around the Surrey Hills and have come across some amazing places to visit that are just on our doorstep.” Over 52 charities will benefit from the sale of the cows which head to auction on 20th October at Sandown Park Racecourse, where over 40 cows will be auctioned. The ‘Gala’ auction takes place at Hampton Court Palace later in the year on 17th November.

Caring at Guildford’s Christophers Hospice This autumn marks the 15th anniversary of hospice care at Christopher’s. We went along to meet some of the wonderful people who work there… www.godalminggreenhouse.co.uk 73, High St, Godalming, GU7 1AW | 01483 414853
Upon hearing the word ‘hospice,’ there are many who might turn on their heel and run, a preconceived idea of what happens there propelling them in the opposite direction. “Getting people through that door remains an obstacle,” explains Head of Care, Geraldine Sheedy, who showed us around. “The word ‘hospice’ still has negative connotations for some people – they still think it’s all about death and dying, but children’s hospices are very different places than people expect.” Families who access the services of Shooting Star Chase at Christopher’s, might not have chosen to step through the doors, but when you have a child with a life-limiting condition, the care at Christopher’s is an essential source of support.
Smiles abound at Christopher’s. Children passed us on their way out to the beautifully tended gardens to enjoy the glorious sunshine, escorted by cheerful support staff with whom we exchanged upbeat hellos. Fun can be found everywhere here, from bright, colourful playrooms to a magnificent pool and playgrounds. We saw fabulously equipped music and art therapy spaces and visited the complimentary therapy room, a welcome retreat for those looking to re-establish equilibrium during the turbulent experiences that they go through when a child is ill. Many of the therapists who come to offer their services here do so entirely free of charge. We were surprised to discover just how state-ofthe-art the facilities were at Christopher’s. Kindly donations from charities and technology firms have
equipped their bedrooms and play rooms with the latest gadgets, for comfort and for pleasure. Families accessing the services here might feel that nothing stays the same for very long in their lives. Not so at Christopher’s- the dedication of the staff and volunteers here never falters. The bespoke care is continuous and on offer for FREE, 365 days a year. The service offers short breaks, day care, symptom management, end of life care and bereavement care; a multitude of options for families and individuals. “For me, it’s about the love and affection and the quality of care we can provide,” says Geraldine when we asked what she really values about her work at the hospice. “We can be reactive and respond really quickly to families’ needs. We’re adaptable. But the thing I like the most is just seeing families so happy and relaxed here. They feel safe and you see genuine smiles on people’s faces. I’ve been here six years and I still look forward to waking up every morning and walking through that door.” The biggest challenge facing Shooting Star Chase is generating the £10 million a year they need just to maintain the current services. People can support the vital work they do by joining in a dazzling variety of fun activities such as ‘fire walks’, sunrise walks and bicycle rides. You could even take part in your own sponsored challenges such as the Three Peaks challenge or join friends’ groups across the county. So let’s get behind the remarkable individuals we met at Christopher’s and give them a helping hand.

OCTOBER 2016
With the ghost of notorious Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar looming over Hollywood, not to mention Netflix’s megahit thriller Narcos, Rich Lee spoke to Guildford-based author, activist and speaker Shaun Attwood whose new book looks deeper into the life of the master criminal and the larger War on Drugs. A war that very nearly claimed Shaun himself…
Beyond Narcos: Talking to Shaun Attwood S
top me if you’ve heard this one: A young business graduate from Cheshire travels to Arizona in the USA with dreams of getting rich on the stock market. Within a decade he makes his first million, but the English rave culture he brought with him saw him lead a double-life as a dealer in ecstasy.
The wild parties and lucrative lifestyle led to even riskier deals with some of the most dangerous criminals in the underworld. But just before the hitmen of notorious Mafioso Salvatore “Sammy the Bull” Gravano could reach him, SWAT raided his apartment beginning an eight-year journey through the hell of America’s most brutal jails and Arizona’s Department of Corrections. It’s a story as gripping as the most unsettling crime fiction, and that’s before the tales of dead rats in the food, cockroaches crawling in his ears at night and savage murders by guards and gang members brought the spotlight of international media on the conditions there, all thanks to the first prison blog started by Shaun. He wrote Jon’s Jail Journal using a tiny pencil sharpened on You can’t a cell door and smuggled his writing to the your past outside world.
Of his younger self, Shaun has made peace with his past. “I harmed society by putting people on the road to drug use. I thought I was keeping the party going, but I was misguided. You can’t change your past but you can help other people to stop them making the same mistakes.”
The War on Drugs
F
or Shaun Attwood, however, the most grievous mistakes made in the arena of narcotics aren’t those committed by the users. To him, the entire War of Drugs waged by the United States and allies since Nixon declared it in 1971 (but which, he says, has darker, racist roots that go back to the depression of the early 20th century) leverages billions of dollars for private prisons, while imprisoning millions of young people, most of whom had nothing more than the temerity to experiment with marijuana.
change but you can help other people to stop them making the same mistakes."
Since his release in 2007, and subsequent lifetime ban from America, Shaun settled in Guildford and shares his story (powerfully recorded in his autobiographical bestselling ‘Shaun’s Trilogy’ and captured in a National Geographic documentary series ‘Locked Up Abroad’) with young people around the UK, using his own harrowing experiences behind bars to cast light on the harsh realities of drugs and crime.
“I point out to them the consequences, because they think they’re invincible and can get away with everything,” says Shaun. “But because my story is so hard hitting, it creates a visceral reaction. And the teachers tell me that the kids that stay behind to ask me questions, they’re always the students that are the hardest to reach.”
“What happens to that young person then?” he asks. “They get put in prison where there’s heroin, crystal meth and gangs; they make their criminal connections in prison and by the time they get out they really are full-blown criminals! The hard-line policies have failed.”
So if the governments and criminal justice systems fail both users and addicts, how then should society treat them? “I advocate education instead of incarceration. But for people who are doing drugs, a lot of the time it’s a cry for help. And if education is failing them then they should be referred to mental health services and get guidance and counselling to help them deal with their addiction issues. “I didn’t know I was self-medicating because I had addiction issues, I was just out there doing it. But once I had a psychotherapist who explained all that and gave me the tools to channel my energy towards better things, I’ve been able to stay away from drugs.”

When it came to anyone crossing his business, he would kill them in a heartbeat Finding Escobar
S
haun’s investment in a Drugs War that very nearly made him another statistic has led him to write a new trilogy of books exploring the conflict through the geopolitics of the USA, Central and South America. And his timing couldn’t be more perfect as the ongoing struggle has seen its central, reallife antagonist, Pablo Escobar, take the public’s imagination hostage thanks to the hugely popular Netflix series Narcos. Two movies about Escobar are also in production: ‘American Made’, starring Tom Cruise, and ‘The Infiltrator’ with Brian Cranston (who, you’ll remember, played that infamous fictional drug dealer Walter White). “The thing that makes Pablo such a fascinating person is his contradictions,” explains Shaun. “He was the wealthiest criminal ever - they estimated him to be worth $30 billion. But he grew up poor during the ‘Violence’ (the Colombian civil war that raged from 1948 to 1958) and learned that it was triggered by the CIA assassination plot that took out the leader of the country and saw hundreds of thousands of people die, peasants hanged and burnt in their own villages, and it terrified him. “So he swore that unlike the politicians of his day he would rise up and help the poor. And that’s one thing he absolutely did. I’m not saying he wasn’t a complete psychopath - I’m not trying to humanise him! But as he made money he went into the slums and built homes, hospitals, soccer stadiums, roads and schools. He spent tens of millions helping the poor and that’s why to this day he’s still revered as a saint in some communities.”
ENTERTAINMENT
Of course, Escobar’s psychotic bursts of violence are well documented by the TV series, but in Shaun’s first book of his War on Drugs trilogy, ‘Pablo Escobar: Beyond Narcos’, he fills in much of the hidden history that the show either chooses not to, or fails to reveal. “When it came to anyone crossing his business, he would kill them in a heartbeat. But every crime in Columbia back then was blamed on Pablo, and Narcos has continued that theme. The series is a pro-DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration) version of events. But if you research more carefully you find it was far more complex. The authorities weren’t trying to take out Pablo for the good of humanity, they were taking over his cocaine business. And that includes the police who were paid off by rivals like the Cali Cartel.” Shaun’s books reveal the dark ironies and devastating policies that made a figure like Escobar possible as well as enabling a war on drugs that makes corporations rich and throws lives away in prisons. “If America had not made the active ingredient of the coca plant insanely valuable [by making it illegal], Pablo Escobar could not have done what he did. It created the black market that these gangsters took control of. The thing that I point out in the book is that fighting these people is as big business as the black market and the money being made by the criminals. So you have to ask: if the status quo is maintained, who benefits?”

Surrey’s Most Haunted
There is certainly more to Surrey than meets the eye. We should know; we regularly sniff out interesting things for you to see and do in your local area, but so far we haven’t seen anything suspicious. Yet. But it wouldn’t matter if we had, we ain’t scared of no ghosts. But should you feel the need for a little ghoul-hunting this Halloween, the following spooky sites could well bring you closer to a ghostencounter of the super-creepy kind.
1 1 Hampton Court Palace
1
It seems that Henry VIII’s sprawling pad gets ghosts right, in the sense that the palace’s many sightings offer up visions of the long-dead famous and genuinely creepy. Sir Christopher Wren, who lived at the palace between 1668 and 1723 allegedly paces up and down the staircase of the Old Court House. There has been one unsettling shade caught on CCTV dubbed ‘Skeletor’, and a Tudor servant called the ‘Grey Lady’ stalks the corridors. Henry VIII’s spouses have been seen to get together for a second and third wives club at the palace. “Never lose your head over a man,” is Anne’s advice to Jane who swings by for this regular date every 12th October, the day she died in 1537. Seymour’s ghost is said to carry a lighted taper through the cobbled courtyard- still holding a torch for Henry it seems.
2
Guildford Castle
The castle was built shortly after the Norman conquest in 1066, on an important route between London, the South coast and the West of England, in order to gain control of the newly won country. Despite many changes to the structure, the ruin endures. As do its former inhabitants. A weary woman in a long Victorian period dress has been glimpsed strolling around the grounds. Within the old stone keep, a phantom woman has been seen standing at the top of the staircase. Other reported sightings include a man hanging by chains attached to the wall, still there having been kept prisoner in the basement once used as a gaol- what a way to spend your afterlife!
3
St Catherine’s
St Catherine’s chapel, built in the early 14th century by rector Richard de Wauncey, stands as an eerie ruin. Pilgrims beware! Don’t amble along the Pilgrims’ Way or you might encounter the ghostly nun on her way to the river with a bucket to extinguish a fire. At other times a spectral train has been seen, with passengers screaming at witnesses to get off the tracks. Local historians link the sighting to a railway accident in the 1890s, on a disused line between Guildford and Peaslake where a train derailed after a cow crossed the tracks, killing many passengers.
4 Brooklands Racetrack
Visit the legendary race track and museum and you might just catch a glimpse of the ghost of Percy Lambert, holder of the land speed record of 103.84mph on 15th February 1913. He told his wife he wouldn’t try and beat his record and then crashed trying to do just that a few months later. Listen very carefully and you might just hear the shade of Percy’s wife scream, “I told you so!” over the spectral roar of racing car engines.
5 Farnham Castle
Here for a conference? You could very well be joined by a ghost or two. Just keep an eye out for floating name tags. That bell you can hear tolling was once housed in the keep, and that soldier you thought was a guy who showed for cosplay was actually a soldier who was shot in the face in the cellar. The shadowy figure that haunts the guard room might not just be the waiting staff who hasn’t had a break for twelve hours. And the ghostly girl dancing on the stairs? She didn’t lose it after the world’s longest team meeting, she tripped on the stairs and died (another way out for consideration.)

FAMILY
OCTOBER 2016
Make sure your bonfire night doesn’t go up in flames, but goes off with a bang! We all have fond memories of being wrapped up and bundled into the car, whizzing off to wonderful displays that lit up the sky and set our hearts ablaze. Where will your family make your memories this year? Matching family hats and gloves are optional, but we do recommend bringing along a camera to capture the magic and perhaps a glow stick or two - or go old-school and bring sparklers! To help you plan ahead, these are some of the best displays on offer in our fair county.
Ripley Bonfire
Saturday 29th October Ripley Green A spectacular firework display will let rip on Ripley Green to accompany a blazing good bonfire. Explore the food stalls and enjoy a tipple or two at the bar- preferably before a whirl on the funfair rides.
Hascombe Bonfire
Friday 4th November Hascombe village hall Warm your cockles around the bonfire in the warm and friendly village of Hascombe where the children will process with torches and light the fire. Still cold? Grab a bite and get warm on the inside with the BBQ delights and crepes on offer. Still not warm? A prize in the raffle will surely give you that fuzzy feeling- be sure to enter and leave this lovely event with a satisfied smile.
Godalming Fireworks Extravaganza, Music of the Movies Friday 4th November Godalming
Ever wanted to be in the movies? Fulfil your big screen dreams this in Godalming this year as you gaze at fireworks dancing in the sky to the music of the movies. You could even see your name in lights (you know, that cool thing people do with sparklers and a camera‌not sure how-try it.) There will be a torch lit procession from the bottom of Church Street, (so not to worry if your sparkler experiment failed) culminating in the fantastic firework display at 8pm. See you there, super stars.

Join the scouts in Send as they pile the bonfire high with torches after the parade from the Saddlers Arms. Come early if you want to put one on the bonfire (a torch, not a scout.) 6pm.

Club Minecraft
We check out the Guildford club and LAN party that lets children’s imaginations run riot…
Despite my many years as a hopelessly addicted gamer, the phenomenon of Minecraft had, until now, eluded me. The award-winning sandbox videogame that was first released in 2009 has captured millions of player’s imaginations all over the world since. But as a casual observer, the appeal of those rough textures and blocky vistas remained something of a mystery, especially compared to the glossy graphics and Hollywood-budget games I tend to waste my days on. But upon visiting Club Minecraft at G Live last month, the true creative potential of Minecraft was revealed to me by the sight of 58 children, ranging from infants to teenagers, conjuring vivid, interactive worlds and colossal landscapes, exploring each other’s creations and having adventures both grand, intimate or plain silly. And doing all of it together. “It’s ‘Lego Infinity’,” explains one of the adult volunteers, succinctly. And then the penny finally dropped. “I like Minecraft because you can make whatever you can imagine,” said ten-yearold Mia, as she put the finishing touches to an eerily evocative haunted house with the flick of a mouse. “You decorate houses and places however you want to. I’m here with my friend Erin but we usually play together over the internet. But it’s much more fun to play in the same room.” The room at G Live, with its rows of tables, cables and monitors and children animatedly clicking and swiping away on
laptops, tablets and phone, looks like it might be a trial for the volunteers as little arms shoot up every couple of minutes begging help when a connection fails or the game grinds to a halt. But these techy firefighters, including four cub leaders, a basketball coach and Club Minecraft founders, brothers Matt and Adam Ward, look like they’re having as much fun as their charges. Matt began hosting Club Minecraft when his son Bailey first showed an interest in the game in 2015. A lifelong gamer, Matt saw an opportunity for his son and his friends to experience the fun of the LAN parties that he and his brother had enjoyed growing up.
By Rich Lee astounded by their creativity. It’s the grandeur of their creations as well. You’ll ask them to build a ship, and they’ll build destroyers, submarines, rowing boats, space ships, pirate ships – with full sets of firing cannons. And that was all built in half an hour.” With Minecraft merchandise donated by the club’s sponsors, the children can take away prizes for, say, building the best haunted castle or London landmark. But perhaps the greatest prize is the opportunity to just let their imaginations run free and have fun building together. Everyone’s a winner at Club Minecraft.
Six parties later and Club Minecraft’s numbers have swelled, with parents dropping off their kids on one Saturday a month for hours of fun, collaborative play. “I used to go to similar things when I was younger,” said one of those parents, Warren. “So it’s nice to see them having a go as well. It’s very creative, they learn each other’s names and show each other what they’re building.” The volunteers are all Minecraft enthusiasts (all DBS checked and include first aiders and fire marshals) and have seen firsthand the staggering playgrounds these kids have crafted out of such a deceptively simple playset. “It’s just limitless,” says Adam. “Every time we’ve held Club Minecraft, I’m just

The Story of British Comics So Far:
The story opens with ‘Cor!’ - a potted history of the importance of sequential art with ancient examples of 3,000-year-old hieroglyphics, 18th century satirical social commentary by William Hogarth, and a present day playful yet political ceramic by Grayson Perry. ‘By Gum’ offers a trip down memory lane with a newsagents stocking classic examples of comics such as ‘Dan Dare’, ‘The Beano’ and ‘The Eagle’. ‘Zarjaz!’ brings things up-to-date with today’s manga, graphic novels and digital comics, and the exhibition story culminates in larger-than life giant interpretations of Zara and her Grandfather, manga influenced comic characters especially created for the exhibition by up-andcoming female designer Asia Alfasi. But the story of this most enduring visual medium runs deeper than that, and the exhibition boasts a ‘library’ of precious artefacts that gives context to the meaning of sequential art. The oldest item is a 3,000-year-old ancient Egyptian stone, lent by the Petrie Museum of
Egyptian Archaeology, and a beautifully carved woodblock print from 1850 by Japanese artist Utagawa Kuniyoshi which chronicles the lives of brave Samurai warriors from yesteryear. The third exhibition zone, ‘Zarjaz!’ considers to what extent societal tastes and changes have affected the content of sequential art. Rare insights by writer Ken Armstrong from the 1970s blood-thirsty shark comic character ‘Hook Jaw’ from Action contrast with a back-catalogue of rare 2000AD editions, the British sciencefiction comic that has been in production since the late 1970s.
Cor! By Gum! Zarjaz!
of sequential art using the materials provided. Families can also build their own Egyptian stone or Hogarth jigsaw puzzle or create their own story by adding speech bubbles to copies of the prints. To keep little ones entertained, there’s a pond filled with comic covers where they can ‘go fish’ for their favourite. As fascinating as it is fun, this is one exhibition that comic lovers and the comic curious won’t want to miss. May we finally add: ‘Biff!’, ‘Ooyah’ and ‘Zoinks!’ (We just couldn’t help ourselves.)
Yes, fear not, true believers (as Stan Lee would say), as many contemporary comic book heroes are present to compare the old with the new, including Britain’s most iconic comic antihero, 2000AD’s Judge Dredd, whose helmet is on display juxtaposed next to an antique Japanese Samurai helmet. Like many Lightbox attractions, there’s family-friendly fun to be had with a DIY comic making area where people of all ages can create their own piece
The exhibition runs until 31st December at the Lightbox Gallery in Woking.

Velvet Rooms: Shades of Autumn
As autumn is the season of change, Leanne, owner of Velvet Rooms salon and spa in Chobham takes a look at the new colour trends arriving over the following months… Rich, shiny colours with warmth and gloss are the favourite way to go for autumn and winter. Deeper brown base colours with either red or caramel highlights are the perfect combination for anyone wanting a slight change for the new season. Terracotta and rich auburn colours with multi-dimensional rich hues are gorgeous at this time of year. Cinnamon, copper and red strands are both muted and beautiful. Changing to the cooler months doesn’t always mean opting for darker hair colours. If you are already very blonde, a lovely way to add warmth and shine is to add a dusty rose pink to your hair or to go for a warmer strawberry blonde. Alternatively, choosing an ash tone will give that subtle change. If you fancy more of a bolder colour, “gombre”, a grey ombre is very fashionable and on trend. This look can also be changed up with a dash of denim blue or smoky lilac. The autumn and winter months are also a great time to try the colour trends such as “watermelon” hair – generally crazy colour will last longer in the cooler weather due to hair not being exposed to the sun as frequently. Vivid greens and sweet pinks create this look and will brighten up those darker days!

Côtes du Rhône Villages Plan de Dieu, Domaine de l’Espigouette 2013 £15.45 a bottle “This is one of most exciting new discoveries and as autumn draws in I think it is a wine that suits the season well. It is a wine that pairs with game particularly well which, by happy coincidence, also comes into the season this month. “This wine is made from old gnarly vines found in the southern Rhone valley. It is predominantly made with the Grenache grape with 20% Syrah and 5% Mourvedre. It is full bodied but with soft tannins, has a nice touch of sweet spice and is a fairly rustic yet complex wine from a relatively small producer. It has a lovely long and silky finish and pairs perfectly with roasted wood pigeon in particular. Available from Cellar Wines, The Old Cellar, High Street, Ripley, Woking GU23 6BB | Tel: 01483 610610

Talking to: Rick Stein Award-winning chef Rick Stein returns to the Guildford Book Festival this month to celebrate the release of his new book and BBC 2 television series Rick Stein’s Long Weekends. We spoke to the famed restauranteur, presenter, author and businessman about his latest adventures in his quest for great food in fabulous locations…
Where did the idea for ‘Rick Stein’s Long Weekends’ come from? The idea came from various trips I’ve been making over the years with my wife, who’s Australian, to show her the nice parts of Europe. The idea of going away for a couple or three days; we’d been doing it naturally for some time. So I was just mentioning it to the director David Pritchard and he said he thought it was a really good idea for a programme. I remember saying at the time, ‘I’m sure it’s been done before.’ We went to the BBC and they said that nobody had. So it makes for a very easy, hour long programme: you turn up on a Friday evening and leave on Sunday evening – or if you’re lucky, Monday, and try to cram as much as you can into that weekend. Mostly it’s about finding great food and drink but we also like to throw in a few cultural spots. We try to make it more personal, to get off the beaten track. How did you choose the locations for your programme? We drew up a list of ten cities for this programme, but the BBC ended up modifying it. One of the places they ended up adding was Reykjavik in the middle of winter, which was certainly not on my bucket list! But I was really pleased I went. It proved to be incredibly interesting, with really nice food and lovely people. Any dishes you found particularly, um, ‘interesting’ on the show? Certainly in Iceland we had some pretty unpalatable things to eat, and in the Palermo episode we had some very weird and wonderful street food. But
I’m certainly not saying you should try it. It was more like: I tried this, it’s not brilliant but I’m glad I tried it. Of the cooks and food producers you meet in the programme who do you remember the most? There was one place in Palermo where this chef was so in charge – not like shouting at everybody, but making his kitchen work like clockwork, which I love. I love chefs who are doing the job properly, and taking evident pleasure in it.
When you return home from your travels, and you’re back in the comfort of your own kitchen, is there a dish that you crave cooking above all others? Yeah, I always ring home and they say “Do you want anything left for you in the fridge?” And I say, just a small dover sole would be very nice, thank you! I just love that fish: It’s a taste of home.
I did enjoy meeting the so-called ‘New Nordic’ chefs in Copenhagen. They’re cooking all kinds of local, foraged ingredients. I’m too old to get into, you know, all these little buds and wild ingredients – but I really enjoyed talking to him and learning all about it. Do some of the dishes you experience on your travels find their way onto your own menus? They do indeed – we’ve got four or five dishes on the menu from the book already. So for me it’s a great privilege to be able to travel to these places and talk to cooks, evaluate what they’re doing and maybe take some ideas back to Padstow. Between the writing, the traveling, filming and all your business interests, do you ever have time to get back in the heat and noise of your own restaurant kitchens? I don’t! The only thing I get to do with any regularity is go in and stand on the pass and just watch what the chefs are doing and comment. But as for working a service, I’m too bloody old! I’m glad to have left that behind.
Rick Stein discusses his new book and BBC television series ‘Rick Stein’s Long Weekends’ at the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre, Guildford on Sunday 16th October.

If you prefer boneless then use 6 pieces of boneless and skinless chicken pieces • 1 large onion • 1 whole garlic • 1 inch piece of ginger • 1 large tomato • 1 tsp each ground cumin, coriander, turmeric, chilli and garam masala powder. • Salt to taste • Small bunch of fresh coriander leaves • 2 tbsp natural yoghurt (omit if you do not want dairy) • 2 tablespoon oil
Method
Make the Puree: Wash the Spinach and drain off the excess water. In a large pot add the spinach and wilt it for a few minutes on the hob or by putting into the microwave for a few minutes. Now add the chillies and garlic and puree in a blender until you get a smooth green puree. Keep aside. Make the Curry: 1. Heat the oil / ghee in the pan and add the cumin seeds then add the finely chopped onions and sauté till the onions become golden. 2. Add the finely chopped garlic and fry for a minute, then add the turmeric powder, red chili powder and coriander powder and stir for a minute. 3. Add the tomatoes and mix well. Now add the spinach and let it cook for a few minutes till it is well blended. 4. Add about 1/3 to 1/2 cup water or as required. Stir again, then simmer for 6-7 minutes or more till the palak or spinach is cooked. Season with salt. The gravy or sauce will also thicken by now. 5. Add the paneer/cottage cheese cubes and stir gently, simmering on a low flame until the paneer cubes become soft. Add cream if you like at this stage. 6. Stir and serve garnished with a wedge of lime.
Method
Make the Curry: 1. Heat Oil in a heavy bottom pan then add the onion which has been finely chopped and after a minute, add the chopped garlic and ginger. 2. Add the spice powder and fry for a minute or so until the oil separates. 3. Add the chopped tomato and the chicken pieces, then fry for 4-5 minutes till the chicken pieces are well coated with the spices and browned. 4. Add the beaten yogurt (or water) to the chicken and cover and leave to simmer for 10 minutes till you have a thick gravy. If it looks too dry, add a little more water. 5. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and serve. Variation: If you like you could add coconut milk instead of the yogurt or water and a few ground cashew-nuts for added flavour.
“I love this rice as it brings the sunshine of the southern Indian coast straight onto your plate.”
Ingredients: • 1 cup basmati rice soaked for 10 minutes in cold water and then drained • 1 tsp mustard seeds • 4-5 curry leaves (optional) • 14 tsp each salt and turmeric powder • 1 tsp lemon juice • 1.5 cup water • 1 tsp oil or ghee
Method
Make the Curry: 1. Heat the oil in the pan and once hot, add the mustard seeds and curry leaves till it splutters. 2. Add the turmeric and the rice and stir for a minute until well coated. 3. Add the water and salt and cover with a tight fitting lid and leave to simmer on very low heat for about 15 minutes or until the rice is done. 4. Add the lemon juice and fluff up with a fork 5. Serve hot.

OCTOBER 2016
WHERE TO EAT:
By Rich Lee Ripley’s historic coaching inn has got its groove back and thrown a revamped restaurant back into the village’s dining scene. So how does the new Talbot fare against its neighbours? Read on… If places were people, then we’d like to gently remind Ripley to spare a thought for its sibling villages trying to carve out their own identities around the county. Ripley could let herself go a little, shed a few shops, an award-winning café or two and even a pub and it’d still be one of Surrey’s most inviting locations. It just doesn’t quite seem fair for everyone else. And now that the Talbot Inn has seen a £1 million facelift, this historic coaching inn, which has hosted everyone from Audrey Hepburn to Lord Nelson and Lady Hamilton during its 250-year history, it can reaffirm its place as one of the village’s proudest landmarks.
Outside, the new Talbot is as lovely as it’s ever been, with its regency-red brick walls almost entirely shrouded in streams of ivy. And inside finds twisting warrens of dark, low-hanging timbers that lead to a primped-up and snug bar area with its burnished copper counter and on, into the radically reimagined restaurant. You’d be hard pressed to be unimpressed by what they’ve done with the space, splashed in colours of mustard and crimson and accents of dark wood from towering bookshelves that climb towards ceilings plated with more of that gleaming copper, reflecting lamplight above dark wood tables and velvety chairs. Paintings of schooners and warships from Admiral Nelson’s day are hung about in obvious homage to the hotel’s famous patron. Beyond is a long room bathed in natural light from the terrace and garden outside, that upon our arrival was filled with a
small army of German wedding guests. The restaurant’s cheery staff didn’t seem to break a sweat. The Talbot can now boast the culinary weight of Michelin-winning chef Martin Blunos behind it as Executive Chef, as well as Head Chef, Paul Turner from Woking. So you might be forgiven for expecting some high-falutin’ punt at fine-dining to replace the tired old menus from the hotel’s previous incarnation. Thankfully it’s nothing of the sort, instead the menu offers a bevy of options where every element is just refined enough while still going full-tilt on great flavours, ingredients and combinations thereof. Catching the tail end of summer, a simple pea and mint dip with some crisp sesame crostini allowed Photographer Fi and me to avoid our usual, fatal mistake of filling up on bread too early, instead giving us
FOOD & DRINK
TheGuide2Surrey.com/Food-and-Drink
THE TALBOT, RIPLEY something light and fresh to soothe our eager appetites before the meal properly took off. Then it was a pint glass of perky fresh prawns before me and a pot of Marie Rose sauce given a crafty squirt of Hogs Back Ale reduction to swipe those juicy crustaceans through. As happy a start as any but made happier by an altogether more indulgent and creative starter that tumbled together wild mushrooms and sweet cherries with the salty tang of local cheese Norbury Blue over toasted sourdough. So simple and so genius, I’m still thinking about it now. Nautical nods run through the menu and specials, from ‘Captain Ahab’s Catch of the Day’ to the HMS Victory Burger, but a simple whole roasted plaice with crushed new potatoes stood out to me. What arrived was an artfully cooked fillet with some burnt lemon, wilted spinach and a little buerre blanc to drizzle over; quite simply the best fish I’d eaten all summer. With creamy flesh so buttery-rich, this magnificent fish just kept giving – finish one side, flip it over and start on the other. And try not to faint with pleasure while doing so. From surf to turf then, and another dish offered up a plinth of braised lamb shoulder, mash and broad beans, topped oddly yet wonderfully with a solitary, sweet meatball and a frizzy crown of fried seaweed. It’s not cool for grownups to play with our food (sadly), but if restaurants like the Talbot’s didn’t then this dish wouldn’t have been nearly so mischievous and delicious. May they never behave themselves. A smooth panna cotta spiked with a little bay leaf and nutmeg, and an orange twist on my favourite pud of them all, the Bakewell tart, finally left us sated, from both the meal and the knowledge that the Talbot’s reinvigorated new look and menus would lure us back time and again. So, another jewel in Ripley’s already top-heavy crown? Absolutely, and the village wears the new Talbot very well indeed.

test dummy: Mavericks Martial Arts Academy
SPORT
TheGuide2Surrey.com/Sport
I don’t know about you, but I have quite an aversion to pain. I don’t like feel of pain, the look of pain or how I act when I’m in it. However, during my time as The Guide 2 Surrey’s Test Dummy, I’ve encountered my fair share. As I headed down to Guildford’s Mavericks Martial Arts Academies on North Street, I feared the worst. I was almost certainly going to come face-to-face with pain again and there was probably nothing I could do about it. Mavericks Martial Arts Academy is the birth child of Chief Instructor Alex Kennedy, an instructor who is well-decorated in the martial arts world to say the least. A third degree Black Belt of Freestyle Kickboxing, he’s trained for over 15 years under some of the best instructors in the country. He’s represented England and GB and is a multi-British Champion who has also won titles abroad and several World Titles with WKA and WKU. As I met Alex, he briefed me on what was going to happen during my session. To begin with I was taking part in their lunchtime kickboxing class, before going through some bits one-on-one with Alex a little later. Regular readers of the Test Dummy might remember a time when I’ve tried my hand at martial arts before, while the more observant of readers might also remember how bad I was. I was in for a test. We began with an intense warm up and stretch which, after a summer hiatus from any real, challenging physical activities, got my heart racing within minutes. Sweating early on is never a good sign. After the warm up the group lined up in order of experience, facing Alex. For my benefit, we started with the basics and tried to master the techniques before going into anything too heavy. Short, quick punch combinations, but keeping balance and control came first before moving onto quicker and more complicated moves. Once I’d mastered that (or Alex had seen how uncoordinated I was), we threw in some footwork, too. I mean after all, this was a kickboxing class. After fifteen minutes of quite honestly weak combinations from me, we paired up.
By Tayler Willson
I was paired with Brendan Martin, a Mavericks trainer and an exciting prospect in the K1 world. We were to take the combinations and movements we had just been taught and practise them with our partner, who would be holding pads as targets. We were taking the first exercise to the next level. It meant keeping up your guard and keeping focus, while attempting to land a hit on the pad, without your partner clocking you in the process. Focus was key. As it happens, I’m pretty bad at focusing and was near-on abysmal. It was my first session, cut me some slack. Before long, we moved onto our final exercise. I was handed a headguard, some shin guards and some questionable shoes. I was pretty sure the pain was near. I geared up and re-joined my partner Brendan. We were to take everything we had learned in the session and spar. Brendan: formidable fighter, Multi Cimac Superleague Winner, Total Valour winner and unbeaten in K1 bouts. Me: slightly overweight writer who hadn’t exercised in around two months. You can work out what happened. As the session drew to a close and my sweaty purple face began to bulge out of my headguard, we slowly began to warm down. A slow jog around the room followed by some stretches. I’d reached the final hurdle. Alex had mentioned before that we’d have an additional session when the class had finished. I can only guess that upon looking at my shiny, purple boat, he had pitied me. We agreed to three one-minute rounds of sparring. I accepted. When I felt a foot at the side of my head I was quite certain I was in trouble. I tried to counter-attack with a pitiful swing with my right arm, disregarding almost everything Alex had taught me in the previous hour. Once again, my focus had failed me. After three rounds of squirming and tip-toeing around Alex, we were finished. I’d received the pain I had anticipated pre-class, and dished out a few sweaty kicks to the hip in return. Once again I had been reminded that I’m never going to be lethal with my hands and feet. But once again, I had realised just how much talent and opportunity lies within our county. For anyone looking to get involved in the Martial Arts scene, Maverick’s and Alex Kennedy’s credentials speak for themselves.

langridge keen for Badminton to Grow Following Rio 2016 Heroics
Less mainstream sports like badminton often fall off the radar after the massive high of an Olympic Games, but even before they won their historic bronze medal, Chris Langridge and Marcus Ellis were facing an uphill battle even among some of the Team GB athletes. “We had some unbelievable questions at the Olympics,” said Langridge upon his return to the UK. “Even from some other Team GB athletes. I won’t mention any names! We do have a very difficult time because people don’t understand the sport because they don’t see it. “Say we have a tournament in Indonesia it will be insane, packed out. The crowd will be going bananas. They love badminton. And then you come back to England and you go back to the normal, quiet, calm, tame.” This is the main challenge the sport faces between now and Tokyo 2020 according to Leatherhead’s Langridge, as they try to shift perceptions and boost the profile of the sport, particularly at elite level. When they beat the Chinese duo of Biao Chai and Wei Hong, ranked No 5, they secured Britain’s first ever Olympic
medal in the men’s doubles and only the country’s third ever. In the immediate aftermath they were too shell-shocked to realise the significance of what they had achieved for badminton in this country. This humble pair, who say over the years they have seen plenty of players just as talented fall by the wayside, have a unique opportunity now to keep badminton in the public psyche. “People haven’t grown up with badminton,” Langridge says. “That’s something we’d love to change.” There is a hint of frustration at the lack of badminton or other more minor sports covered on television amid the rush for football and not much else. “It’s so tough. Sky and BT went bananas for the football rights and spent billions. It’s crazy. That’s the problem we have. It would be brilliant for us if there were more programmes which showed other sports regularly. Even if it’s short clips. It is a quick, dynamic and explosive game. “We’ve got this opportunity now. We don’t want people to forget about badminton in a year. Hopefully Marcus and I and all the other players can harness this from the Olympics.”
“Me and Marcus have wanted to get across we’re just normal guys who have worked hard. We’re not exceptionally fast or talented. If we can do it, anyone can do it. We need the youngest people playing, and the more people playing we’ve got better odds of getting some world class players. That’s the only way the sport can grow.”
“We’ve got this opportunity now. We don’t want people to forget about badminton in a year’s time” Langridge’s Surrey Smashers start their NBL (National Badminton League) campaign on October 17th at Surrey Sports Park. Visit www.surreysmashers.co.uk for tickets and more information.

Q & A: Ian James, Entrepreneur in Residence at SETsquared Surrey Ian James recently joined SETsquared Surrey, part of the University of Surrey and a founding member of the SETsquared partnership – the global number one university business incubator. As full-time Entrepreneur in Residence at the Surrey Research Park-based incubator, Ian provides advice and guidance to early stage, high-growth technology companies, and helps grow the number of virtual and on-site incubator members from across the region. Ian’s 30+ years’ experience in telecoms and IT from organisations such as Ericsson, working across Europe, Africa and Asia, combined with his expertise in coaching entrepreneurs at the Aurik Business Accelerator in Johannesburg, makes him ideally placed for his new role. Here, Ian shares his advice on what to consider when fast tracking a young company and how best to avoid the potential pitfalls.
prevalent among tech-based companies where the founder is an engineer who may have conceived and built an innovative product but hasn’t started out by investigating whether anyone would be interested in buying it.
knowledge is one of the key areas that sets us apart from other incubators.
What are the advantages to early stage businesses in joining an incubator environment?
There is no formula for success but there are a number of key ingredients, which when combined increase the chances of success. These include:
A business incubator is a fantastic environment to fast track start-ups and early stage companies. For ambitious organisations, it’s a great opportunity to work in a professional office environment, discuss and share ideas with similar staged businesses, and access advice and resources to give the business the best chance of thriving. At SETsquared Surrey, we guide entrepreneurs through their quest for a viable business model from the outset and support them in their journey, challenging and supporting them along the way. Member organisations can be based at our facilities in Surrey Technology Centre, Guildford or choose to be a Virtual Member and work from their own office. Do businesses in an incubator have a higher chance of survival? If so, why?
Research shows that 50% of companies do not survive beyond 5 years. Why do you think so many businesses fail in the early stages?
At SetSquared Surrey incubator, we have helped to accelerate over 165 early stage, high-growth technology businesses since 2002, with 90% surviving more than three years in business. This far exceeds industry stats on start-up business survival rates.
There are many reasons why companies fail but the most common is a failure to secure a significant market for their product or service. This is particularly

Do you have a formula for success that you think early stage businesses need to consider?
1. Think like a customer: to help you to define your target market and the value of your offering. 2. Experiment: make the simplest, most basic working product you can and test it on some of your target customers. Do this at every stage of development and you will save months of wasted effort producing the wrong thing. 3. Don’t neglect the boring stuff: put a few basic things in place to register your business, track your finances, protect your intellectual property and define the rights and obligations of shareholders. 4. Listen and learn: be willing to accept help and advice from others. At the SETsquared incubators we assign a mentor to each company to support and challenge them to explore different options. We also offer free access to professional service providers which assist entrepreneurs to navigate the legal, financial, commercial and cultural elements of their businesses.

BOYS, GIRLS & TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS. . . PART 1 My name is Thomas Duncan Bell, I’ve run a number of businesses with varied successes and failures, just like any entrepreneur. I also write a blog, The Bipolar Businessman. A useful thing to note is that while I’m writing a blog surrounding my life as ‘The Bipolar Businessman’ the chaps are not the only ones suffering in this area of mental health… Both males and females are equally at risk of issues surrounding mental health, depression and anxiety and it’s important that we’re aware of anyone within our businesses that may potentially show cause for concern. I started this blog originally because around only 19% of men who actually have a mental health disorder come forward to try and seek help or advice, and still fewer of that 19% actually put their name to it, so most remain anonymous. The shocking thing is that the female statistic is only around 29% which means in both the male and female categories we’re still seeing that around 70-80% of people with a mental health issue will not seek help or maybe don’t even know how to. A staggering 45% of mental health issues surrounding depression and anxiety are actually caused or develop because of people’s working environments and work lifestyles. That means nearly half of the mental health issues in the UK to date could potentially be remedied if companies were to employ steps to make a change!
The statistic in 2009 was that 1 in 6 workers is experiencing depression, anxiety or stress at a cost of approximately £26 billion to the UK economy, or around £1,035 per employee (a statistic from the Sainsbury Centre for Mental Health, 2007). This means that mental health at work is a pretty significant problem, yet we still, as a nation, take this stiff upper lip/ elephant in the room approach, meaning that the costs spiral for individuals and businesses. My focus as an individual is to create awareness of the issues, share my story (to give an indication of where others might have come from, or what they might be dealing with) and to help companies both large and small to remedy the issues, at least to a degree, and implement changes and policies that aid their staffs development long term. A study by ‘Mind’ indicated the following areas to consider are: what the government can do, what your average employer should do, what your large scale employer should do and what the owners/managers of SME’s should do and in these four groups, there are some areas to focus on. In this first part we are going to look at what the The Government could do: • explore financial incentives to encourage employers to prioritise mental health awareness and support at work – such as a feedback incentive loop where insurance premiums would be lower if employers had good mental health training for management in place • keep the current tax-exempt status of employee assistance programmes (EAPs) as welfare counselling to encourage
employers to provide EAPs, which act as support and prevention services for mental ill health • research and evaluate extending tax reliefs or reductions for a range of employer-funded interventions that promote mental wellbeing, and ensure exemptions are applied and publicised consistently by HMRC and other agencies engaging with employers, such as Business Link • explore how to improve GPs’ use of the fit note – for example, by increasing the amount and quality of compulsory occupational medicine training available at medical school and as ‘refresher’ modules and by working with the Royal College of GPs to raise awareness of best practice • along with organisations such as Mind etc. consider the specific needs of different sizes and sectors of business and ensure recommendations and resources are tailored to a range of needs • ensure sustainable provision of occupational health support for small and medium-sized employers (SMEs) at local level – for example, by implementing the NHS Wellbeing Task and Finish Group’s recommendation for NHS occupational health to provide spill-over services for local businesses.
