no exception, and therefore the good people at Experience Guildford have ensured that the town doesn’t just embrace Independents’ Day (unsurprisingly on the 4th July) but utilises the whole month. This way, you get plenty of opportunity to find out all about what GTown’s independents’ have to offer. So in the spirit of ‘Super Sizing’ Independents’ Day this year, Experience Guildford will be introducing a month long loyalty campaign to showcase the eclectic mix of independent businesses in the town - and reward you with cash prizes with a combined value of £1000 to spend in your favourite independent businesses. Moreover from the 4 July to the 31 July whenever you purchase a product or service from three independent stores or businesses in Guildford, you will be entered into a prize draw to win one of ten £100 prizes. With over 120 of Guildford’s independent businesses signed up to the scheme, you won’t have to look far to find an independent store, bar, cafe, venue or leisure business that could put you on the road to being £100 better off. GROWING FOOD TO SHARE IN FARNHAM Allotment holders from Farnham have been busy planting vegetables and other tasty edibles in public spaces in the town. A team has planted four containers located outside the supermarket in South Street with flowers, vegetables, salad crops and fruit. The initiative is part of Farnham in Bloom and the Incredible Edible project, which is a movement that aims to increase the amount of local food grown and eaten in towns. The list of plants in South Street is impressive; everything from poppies to parsley and more is available. Councillor Stephen Hill, Lead Member for Community Enhancement says: “As the flowers and crops ripen, we are inviting people to help themselves to whatever fresh fruit and veg they can eat but please do remember to wash it and only eat produce you recognise or know is edible! “We first learned about the growing food to share initiative from our twin town in Andernach. They have been successfully running a similar scheme for several years. This is a lovely community project that shows you do not need a large space to be able to grow your own. It is a great way to try something that has been locally grown and, if people like what they’ve tried, we hope they might have a go at growing their own next year.” There is also an Incredible Edible project growing in Hale. Led by St Mark’s Church and a number of community groups, several containers have been planted with food to share.

YVONNE ARNAUD ART 2016 Guildford Arts presents its 21st summer exhibition Yvonne Arnaud Art and to celebrate there is a stunning line-up of artists, in both two and three dimensions, from far and wide and with a selection of excellent local artists. Can Prosperity Flourish in a Finite World? The University of Surrey’s Centre for the Understanding of Sustainable Prosperity (CUSP) launches “Nature of Prosperity” campaign. A ma jor, new public dialogue on the “Nature of Prosperity” has been launched by the university, with the former Archbishop of Canterbury, environmental activist, Satish Kumar and Green Party MP, Caroline Lucas, explored one of the most vital questions of our time: “What prosperity means in an age of environmental and social limits?” To mark the launch, the University of Surrey launched an innovative campaign to elicit the views of the wider community

about the nature of prosperity and early insights from the #prosperityis campaign were revealed at the event. As well as being the inaugural event for “The Nature of Prosperity”, the event, which took place at the end of May, marked the launch of the Centre for the Understanding of Sustainable Prosperity (CUSP) at the University of Surrey. An overview of CUSP’s work programme of ground-breaking research and engagement was unveiled at the event by CUSP Director, the University of Surrey’s Professor Tim Jackson. We caught up with the Kingsbury Court’s Care Home Manager, Tracy Manzi to find out more… You are about to celebrate your first birthday as a care home – how has your first year in operation been? What have been your achievements? Over the past very exciting year, we’ve achieved so much including 5 stars following the recent Environmental health inspection, and excellent relationships with our partners in the community. Our resident Chef was also recently nominated at the national care awards. We currently have two floors open and these are usually full, and with a wonderful team that continues to grow and develop, we are proud that visitors and residents alike all comment on the great atmosphere and standards throughout the home. During our first year we have developed a monthly breakfast meeting which is welcomed and enjoyed by a wide number of our statutory and voluntary service colleagues, which ensures that we are always up to date and well informed on services for our residents. We also worked closely with our colleagues in health and social care to provide a 6 week step down bed programme to enable people to leave hospital quickly and rehabilitate before returning home, this not only

CRANLEIGH RESIDENT CELEBRATES

ASTOR CARER Would you like to help other people in your community? Perhaps you would like to go back to work (maybe just part-time) but think you lack the right skills? If you are kind, caring and reliable and believe that people have the right to live as independently as possible, care work can offer a very rewarding career with plenty of job satisfaction. You don’t need any formal qualifications as we provide full, free initial and on-going training. Female carers are preferred by the ma jority of our clients.

Rene Hatton, a resident at Cedar Court Care Home, Cranleigh recently celebrated her 100th birthday with a shopping trip to Liberty, London. However, this was not an ordinary visit to London’s historic and luxury department store. Rene began her working life at 16 in the 1930’s at Liberty in the counting room. She met her future husband Franklyn while working at Liberty and had many happy years working in London. The visit was made extra special by Ian Hunt of Liberty, who provided a guided tour through many of the departments which provoked very happy memories for Rene who chatted with current staff and was warmly received. During the tour Rene revealed to Ian her engagement ring which Franklyn bought her from the store. The ring with a jade stone had been well preserved throughout the years and generated a lovely conversation. Rene was full of energy and joy throughout the visit and the look of pleasure on her face made the journey well worth the effort. Liberty provided a lovely lunch where Ian presented Rene with one of Liberty’s beautiful and renowned head scarves as well as a pretty diary. “It’s wonderful to revisit Liberty. I have many fond memories of my time working here and the memories of today will be equally precious,” said Rene. After a visit to view some old photos of the store from yesteryear, Rene and Kaye, her chaperone from Cedar Court headed back in a taxi to Cranleigh. The conversation undoubtedly was all about the wonderful experience. Cedar Court Care Home, Essexinformation Drive off Elmbridge Road, Cranleigh, For more visit Surrey GU6 8TX

TALKING TO MYSTERY JETS By Alex D’Arcy

ENTERTAINMENT

TheGuide2Surrey.com/Entertainment

Always the Sun Festival comes to Guildford’s Stoke Park on the 10th & 11th of September for two days of the finest music, theatre, arts, crafts, food, drink and family fun. We caught up with Blaine Harrison, front-man of Saturday’s headliners Mystery Jets, who released their highly acclaimed 5th album, Curve of the Earth, earlier this year. You released Curve of the Earth earlier this year after some time off – how has it been getting back on the road and playing your new tunes? It feels great to be out on the road again. We’ve had a couple of years out. I’ve always loved both sides of the process as much as the other. I absolutely love getting lost in ‘studio world’ and making a record and writing and obsessing over that but equally the flipside of it which is very much what we’re in now is incredibly exciting and having not done festivals for the last couple of summers I think we’re all just feeling really pumped about getting out and playing to as many people as possible. It feels like there’s been a real sense of new people coming across us through them discovering our new record and hearing stuff on the radio and equally having that part of the crowd who like what you do and have an expectation of you; that’s a great challenge to provide something for those people that they haven’t seen before – I love festivals.

You headline Always The Sun Festival this September and your summer is filled with festivals – with the release of your new album earlier this year, what are your sets consisting of at the moment – a mix of old and new? The last week or so we’ve been in quite lengthy discussions with the guys in the band about what a festival set needs to be and about how far you can take people into where you are now and how much do you need to keep one foot in the door where you’ve come from. I think festivals really are about uniting people, it’s kind of what I’ve always loved about them. It’s your chance to win over new people as well as giving something to your fans that have followed you for years and they’ve got particular favourites that they love hearing. I think it’s

about making those two worlds meet and I feel like we’ve crafted a festival set now which I think does that in a way that doesn’t feel like you’re just playing your most well-known songs with a couple of newbies chucked in. It feels like it has the peaks and troughs that we would put into a set at one of our own shows. It’s almost a reappraisal of some of our older material but put through the filters of the band we are today. We’ve got Jack who’s our new bass player and I think the way we play now, I feel we’re more animated than we have been in years. We use the stage a lot, it’s not about a fancy light show, I think it’s all about us interacting with each other and carrying that through all the songs, old and new. It’s all about having that interaction with each other and with the audience as well.

Does your rider include any extravagances? Lots of synthetic meat products seemed to have ended up on our rider. Three of us, occasionally four, ex-meat eaters, so we kind of go in for all the Linda McCartney veggie range and the whole Quorn range at one time or another. It’s a real mezze platter at the moment. And we stress that all beverages and all ales are locally sourced, we try to specify within a 1 mile radius of the venue. Preferably brewed on site is what we’re going for!

Do you have any experiences of Guildford or being in and around Surrey? I went to art school, just down the road in Kingston and lots of my friends are from round there. It’s a lovely part of the world. In the sixties it seemed to be where all the rock stars used to buy their houses. You drive around places like Haslemere and Liphook (where I have friends) and it’s a beautiful part of the world. When I was at Uni there we used to go out a lot, lots of camping trips around there, so I know it well.

Mystery Jets headline Always the Sun Festival which takes place on the 10th & 11th of September on Guildford’s Stoke Park. Adults: £20 per day | 11 – 15 years: £10 per day | Under 11’s go FREE Get your tickets at alwaysthesun.co.uk The new album Curve of the Earth by Mystery Jets is out now.

talking to Turin Brakes

ENTERTAINMENT

TheGuide2Surrey.com/Entertainment

Fifteen years since their celebrated debut The Optimist LP and Turin Brakes are back with a new album and ready to win the crowds at Always the Sun festival with their uniquely rich and evocative acoustic rock. We spoke to the band’s Rob Allum ahead of their visit to Guildford on 11th September… By Rich Lee

The Optimist is fifteen years old this year and considered to be one of the first great UK albums of the millennium. What went on in those recordings that produced such an iconic work? Essentially, Gale (Paridjanian, guitar) and Ollie (Knights, vocals) had written these songs and put them together on their little four-track in their bedroom. If you listened to the demos, all the atmosphere was there already before we went into the studio. And that original atmosphere transferred across brilliantly. You joined Ollie and Gale on drums for that first album. Did you imagine that you’d still be a part of Turin Brakes 15 years later? You know what, when it started I don’t think even Ollie and Gale thought that we’d still be here. But there was me, Eddie (Myers, bass), Gale and Ollie, we all played on that first record and thought at the time, ‘this is an album, maybe there’d be a second album’, but I didn’t have any great ideas about whether I’d be in it for long. But what I did know, right from the very first moment, was that there is such an incredible chemistry between us when we play in a room together. And that energy was there right from the very first moment we played ‘The Door’. It was unbelievable. Some bands have it, some don’t and maybe it only comes along once in a lifetime so I think you have to hold onto it when it does. Turin Brakes are famously tireless tourers. What do you enjoy about life on the road? It’s the most straightforward, honest transaction: you turn up somewhere, you play music to real people, they react and you react back. It’s immediate and that’s why we love it. Our long-term fans are always amazing and loyal, you couldn’t ask for better, but the new guys that come along also seem to react really warmly which we feed off.

If we didn’t tour we’d be looking to do some form of extreme sports just to get the adrenaline kick, that hit. Have your travels been an influence on the sound of Turin Brakes? It definitely influences the music. There was a lot of Americana to it, particularly early on, so those widescreen vistas and panoramas spring to mind. But the more you travel the more you take on and absorb. We’ve been in Italy recently and a song from the new album ‘Rome’ came out of that and other travels. It can’t help but influence how you think about the world, and also appreciate what you’ve got back here at home. Any decadent backstage riders for Turin Brakes? Well we drink Courvoisier, that’s pretty hip-hop isn’t it? And some real ales… to keep it real (laughs).

tour “ Ifwe’dwe bedidn’tlooking

to do some form of extreme sports just to get that adrenaline kick, that hit.

You’ve said that you have an amazing memory for the gigs and places you’ve played. If you had to pick your favourite? I’d say when we did V Festival… 2003? It was just amazing: a beautiful sunny day, the crowd were so up for it. When the crowd is going wild you can’t help but surf on top of it. It was ridiculous; girls were taking their tops off like we were Led Zeppelin. Our girlfriends were looking on behind the stage, wagging their fingers at us! But I’m really looking forward to Always the Sun Festival. There’s some great culture in Guildford and so it’s a great thing for the town.

AS PART OF THIS YEAR’S NEW FESTIVAL, ALWAYS THE SUN, COMING TO GUILDFORD IN SEPTEMBER, WE ARE OFFERING UP THIS SIMPLE EASY TO FOLLOW STEP - BY - STEP GUIDE TO MAKING A SUNSHINE THEMED HEAD DRESS. WHAT MORE COULD YOU WANT THAN THIS GLORIOUS SUMMERTIME CRAFT PROJECT? AND IF YOU COME ALONG TO THE FESTIVAL, YOU CAN WEAR IT WITH PRIDE AT THE OPENING PARADE IN STOKE PARK.

HOW DO I MAKE IT? 1.

To use the Always the Sun template provided, simply find a large thin piece of card, (an old cereal packet would be a great option) sturdy but also bendable. approx A4 size is bigger enough.

2.

Fold said piece of card in half.

3.

Carefully cut out the page from the magazine and place on top of the card and draw around the shape.

4.

Next step cut out the shape with a sharp implement, scissors, scalpel blade (mind your fingers), in fact if you are a small person reading this then maybe best to get a responsible adult to do this bit.

5.

Unfold the card and in the two bottom corners make a small hole, a sharp pencil would work well or, if your card is a bit tough, a hole punch if you have one.

6.

You will now need something to keep it in position on you head: thick gardening string, ribbon or whatever you have to hand. Cut two equal lengths approximately 25 cm long insert through the hole and secure in place with a tight knot. This is your basic headdress.

7.

The next part is the fun part: with a sunshine theme, go wild, go tropical, go sunny, the more outlandish the better. Reach to the sky and have fun.

8.

Display your amazing creation at the Always the Sun parade on Saturday the 10th September, meeting at 9.30am at the Nightingale Road entrance of Stoke Park. Children will need to be accompanied by a adult ticket holder. It should be quite a spectacle!

NEWS FLASH - COMING TO A SCHOOL BOOK BAG NEAR YOU SOON, WILL BE A READY PREPARED ALWAYS THE SUN CHILDS HEADRESS FOR THEM TO DECORATE AT HOME.

JULY 2016

cray fishing Right my friends, summer's here and you need to get out there and get some good wholesome fun. Crayfish are everywhere in our waterways and catching these weird alien looking things is a great activity for the kids. They get to paddle in a stream, you get to lol about on the bank and the whole family can picnic a sunny day away in various corners of our lovely county. But first; A disclaimer: The bottom line is that like everything in this fair land there 47,682 different rules and regulations that tell you what you can and can’t do about everything from what density your pillow can be to Crayfish. All I’m promoting here is a fun day with the kids essentially rock-pooling in a river and seeing what you find, splashing about and having fun. I’m not telling you to feed your family and I’m not telling you that you can do whatever you want. If you are allowed to be in that area or to actually do what you are doing, then always get permission from the relevant authorities. Remember, there’ll always be someone who’ll tell you that what you’re doing is illegal and akin to murdering your father and marrying your mother and ruling the city of Thebes. Also if you get hurt doing this you messed up not me. Look over to the section called ‘LEGAL STUFF’ to find out more, well, legal stuff… That being said, let’s move on. First you need some sort of entrapment device; luckily in one of my nine lives I was a survival instructor for The Delta Ranger Special Catering Commando Corp so I have just the homemade device for you.

You will need: • • • • • • • • •

1x empty 5 litre water bottle Some string 1x scissors 1x roll of Water proof duct tape 1x first aid kit 1x Pair of Dungarees (to be worn with no shirt for optimum redneck style. Chewing on straw is optional.)

WHAT TO DO WITH ALL THIS STUFF: Right, first things first cut the bottle about 2 cm under where the slope of the neck curves into the side of the bottle. Cut all the way around and remove the top. You should now have a bucket shape of the body of the bottle and a cone/pyramid shape of the neck and top of the bottle. Take the bottom bit and punch a small hole in the side. Then take string feed it through and pop a knot in the end so it won’t slide out. Grab some pebbles or medium rock and put it in the bottom if the bottle. Next, invert (turn upside down) the cone/pyramid bit and slide it “spout” first into the other half of the bottle. Slip it in so it is tight then duct tape that bad boy to keep it in place. Now you have your crayfish trap into which you can put your chosen bait, pop into the water and wait and see.

Now to find some good Crayfish haunts!

Identifying Species

Surrey is literally crawling with waterways all of which are teeming with Crayfish. Here are some lovely spots that are nice and shallow and also offer a place to spread the picnic rug out and drink lashings of ginger ale.

One of the very important things to learn is how to tell the difference between the signal and the white clawed as you will be heavily fined if found removing the white clawed from the water. The easiest way is the claws on the signal are large and heavy, red underside with a turquoise or white patch on the upper side.

Abinger Hammer

Claws are much thinner and longer on the white claw and of course the size is the main way the signal are generally double in size of our native species.

The pretty village of Abinger Hammer has a great green which has the Tillingboune River slicing through it. The nearby Green also has a Cricket Pitch, perfect for a sunny day watching the cricket, paddling in the river and enjoying a sandwich from Annie’s Tea room.

White - Clawed Crayfish (UK Native) May grow to 12 cm (5 inches) long, although sizes below 10 cm are more common.

Shalford, The River Wey Navigation

Signal Crayfish (Invading Species)

If you head behind the seahorse pub you’ll find a little gate at the top of a bank leading down to a shallow section on a bend of the river Wey Navigation. There’s a small “beach” here and it’s a lovely spot to set up operations.

Are typically 6–9 centimetres (2.4–3.5 in) long, although sizes up to 16–18 cm (6.3–7.1 in) are possible. Once you trap any invasive species it is illegal to release it again.

Brittens Pond, Off Salt Box Road Also teeming with Crayfish, and a lovely place to picnic under the shade of the trees. As with all three suggestions it’s also within stone’s throw of several nice pubs. Also, if the skies open you can salvage what’s left of the day and head to Air Hop.

LEGAL STUFF If you’re unsure about all of the laws about Crayfishing, be sure to visit the gov.uk website and fulfil all the necessary criteria before getting yourself in trouble…! You must not trap non-native crayfish without written consent from the Environment Agency (EA) in England or Natural Resources Wales in Wales. It is illegal to trap crayfish without two things... a) Landowners permission. b) Consent from your governing body (the environment agency) This is free to people who are using for personal consumption and is relatively easy to get with a small amount of info, the most important being your desired area to fish.

WHERE TO EAT: EL PIC, CAMBE Nearly a quarter century serving deliciously authentic Spanish tapas, El Pic remains an independent jewel in Camberley’s dining scene… You have to hand it to El Pic. This little tapas restaurant got a foothold in a town where few independent restaurants had before, or have since. It was owner Richard Stiles’ dream to pour his Iberian heritage into a local love letter to Spain on London Road. And he did it 25 years ago, before anyone even knew what Tapas was. Which takes, as the Spanish might say, ‘cojones’. Of course, now that Tapas’ not-so-secret awesomeness is well and truly out of the bag, there are few large towns that don’t have a restaurant or two serving these lip smacking dishes that conjure the flavours and easy-does-it lifestyle found in the bodegas of Spain. The UK now boasts several chain restaurants

all falling over themselves to deliver the ‘tapas experience’ to the high street. But I’ll wager that none of them comes close to El Pic’s authentic charm. This is, you might say, the real thing. It’s evident from the moment you step into the twinkly half-light inside, from the splashes of colour adorning the walls to the vine-draped central pergola, the low strum of flamenco music over the speakers, to the hundreds of photos of happy customers hung above the bar, gently fluttering in the soft breeze from a ceiling fan. It’s what holidays are made of, let alone a sticky summer evening in Camberley. There’s even a crude but cute little courtyard out the back should you want to go al-fresco. “We recommend 3-4 tapas per person,” suggests the menu at El Pic; sage advice that we rejected instantly upon discovering a list brimming with so many tantalising options. It helps that El Pic’s manager and veteran chef Kriszta was on hand to guide us fondly through the range of hot and cold, meat, fish and veg tapas and specials. A lush white rioja in hand, we began with simple starters of toasted bread and dips

of tangy aioli and cool salsa and some pickled anchovies. Then came the tapas proper, beginning with a fun-size paella, the rich tint of a Catalonian sunrise, that brought wafts of lemon and saffron and seafood and splendidly stodgy rice with tender prawns and squid. Chorizo appeared on our table twice, once as crisp-crumbed croquettes that hid a creamy, smoky centre and a Chorizo Infierno - a dish of spicy sausage, onions and flaming brandy that was a cheerful bit of theatre, where the subtle hum of sweet booze and crispy frazzle left over lifted what is El Pic’s devilishly good, utterly mandatory chorizo. Heavier than your common bravas, sautéed Patatas al Escocés drenched in cream with serrano ham was almost enough to derail a train of gluttony that was only just starting to build up steam. Almost. Because that is the unbridled joy of this cuisine; a parade of successively simple dishes, each more beguiling than the last, that can whip even the most selective foodies into a frenzied froth of sheer gastro-pleasure, sharing hands

criss-crossing tables splattered with sauces and oils like a Pollock canvas. I’m sure they show more restraint on the continent, but that’s just not our style. The rest of the meal sped by in a blur of whole grilled sardines – tricky to eat but so worth it; Gambas en Guindilla: an El Pic special of battered jalapeño peppers stuffed with juicy king prawns, and the delightful pop of Habas al Moro: fresh and tender broad beans tossed in onions and paprika. Oh, and churros and chocolate for a final sweet hit before blissful surrender took us. There’s nothing high-falutin’ about any of this of course. Just 25 years of experience cooking simple yet exceptionally delicious tapas. Were El Pic in Spain itself, it would be the sort of place tucked well back from the resorts in the ‘old town’, an off-the-beaten-track, no frills, friendly neighbourhood bodega beloved by the locals and the lonely planet seekers but mercifully overlooked by the throngs. Which, come to think of it, sums up El Pic nicely.

Hale and hearty pub food is elevated to something significantly more refined and delicious at the Olive Tree, with fresh fish and seafood delivered daily straight from boats in the West Country and from Billingsgate, and meat from local farms and butchers. The pub stocks some superb wines from Italy, Spain, Australia and beyond as well as craft lagers and fine ales. Inside the Olive Tree retains the country charm from its open fire and squishy armchairs to its elegant dining room. This summer they have extended the patio and expanded the garden to allow customers to enjoy some al fresco relaxation.

New Spa Opens in Guildford

Mary Ann Weeks at Aveda, the well-established and popular Guildford hair and beauty salon, has expanded and opened an Aveda Spa and Wellness Studio at their premises on the High Street this summer and is open now.

The new Spa and Wellness Studio take up the top two floors of the current Aveda salon, with Mary Ann Weeks at Aveda now inhabiting all four floors of the beautiful building at 167 High Street.

The Aveda salon has long been a favourite of Guildford residents, and the decision to expand comes from a demand for increased beauty and spa treatments as well as for a stylish space in which to take yoga, Pilates and other fitness and relaxation classes, offering a calm and luxurious sanctuary right in the heart of town.

Four beautifully appointed new treatment rooms will be offering Aveda’s signature facial and body treatments as well as maintenance essentials such as waxing, manicures and pedicures. Game, Set and Match for Jacks of London Surrey

Q

Jacks of London proved it was a true centre court star after serving up a week of championship barbering services for the world’s male tennis elite at the Aegon men’s tournament in London which ended in June with Scot Andy Murray lifting the title for a record fifth time. Sports-mad Jacks of London is no stranger to the sporting elite, recently signing England and Stoke City goalkeeper Jack Butland as the face of the brand. For Aegon 2016, a hand-picked squad of barbers from Jacks’ Surrey-based stores looked after all 64 players, their families and support teams throughout the championship. As well as providing its trademark comprehensive mix of traditional and contemporary male grooming services, Jacks made sure the players kept their cool and maintained their style as play hotted up, with its exclusive range of Jacks of London the True Gent styling products. Doubles victor Pierre-Hugues Herbert and the bad-boy of tennis, Australian no 18 Nick Kyrgios both dropped by for some of Jacks’ impeccable styling and service, as did past champions John McEnroe and Greg Rusedski. All loved The True Gent range, with its impeccably fresh, masculine fragrance of pomegranate and lime. Fresh from Queens, MD Sue Whitehead said her team were firmly on the ball. Holiday Hair Tips

y

Although it might not seem like summer, it actually is. And when the sun does decide to make an appearance and the rain finally dries up, you don’t want to be caught short when it comes to keeping your hair in good nick. So, whether you’re going abroad or staying put with your fingers firmly crossed, we have put together a few handy summer holiday tips to help keep your hair in the best shape possible... Wear protection Protect your hair from UV rays with a heat protector spray. This will prevent the sun from drying out your hair which, in turn, contributes to causing those ugly split ends and straw like texture! And no one wants that, do they?

Add moisture Make sure to pack a moisture mask whenever you’re going somewhere with nice weather. Nothing will wreck and dry your hair out faster than the mixture of sun, salt, sand, chlorine & wind! Pop a hair mask on for 5-10 minutes whilst you rub in your after sun and you’ll be left with velvety smooth hair. Like a mermaid. Or Bon Jovi.

Add waves For the beach look, spritz hair with a sea salt spray and then braid. Go over the braid with straighteners, untie and rake through with fingers for beautiful waves. You’ll have that laid back, surfer look in no time.

Accessorize When sunbathing or swimming, your hair can get in the way. To make sure it looks great at all times, hold it back with a printed bandana or floral clip. The hair accessory is very much in this summer and looks the bee’s knees, too! For more information and helpful hints visit velvetrroms4hair.com

JULY 2016

Following part one of The Quest to Find the Best Me in last month’s magazine (it’s all online in case you missed it), our Sports Writer Tayler now documents the final four weeks of his journeys, explains the results and maps out his plans for the future (deep, I know)…

By Tayler Willson

The Quest to Find the Best Me: Part two Week 5

WEEK 6

It’s always risky sticking to a new regime over a bank holiday payday weekend. It’s probably my biggest challenge so far and the temptation to sway at the mere glimpse of a well thought-out ‘Pub Garden?’ Facebook status is astounding. But I remained strong. Kind of.

It’s been a productive week. I spent one day arguing with people on Twitter, another day I got fixated on whether tote bags are okay on guys and one day I travelled, like, 45 minutes out of my way to try these Korean chicken wings that were a bit of a let-down. Let’s just say that the thirteen Google reviews co-signing this particular establishment’s “authenticity” should have been a warning that maybe the chicken wings wouldn’t be worth the 45-minute train journey.

I’ll explain: last week was a productive one for me. I continued in the same vein as week four in both exercise and nutrition. Monday evening saw me squeeze in a seven mile run that was then followed by a sweet potato salad, courtesy of Mother Willson (cute I know). Tuesday’s my Farnham Nuffield Health day where I’m at the mercy of my Personal Trainer, Max Lewis, for the hardest, yet hugely satisfying, hour of my week. This week’s session was the closest I had come to tears yet. Our old friend Tilly the Tyre was again making another appearance – much to the disappointment of my legs that had only just recovered from the previous week – but this time she/it was used slightly differently. I was to do a single flip, sprint to the far fence, hold a deep squat for five seconds with my arms raised, sprint back to the tyre and repeat. This went on for five minutes. Five gruelling, torment-filled minutes. But satisfying on completion nonetheless. A quick swig of water and my legs were given no let up as I was made to lunge around the rectangle area – roughly the size of a badminton court – with only two seconds rest on each lunge (please note facial expression in header image). With Tuesday done I was on the home straight towards that three-day weekend. Wednesday – the day I work from the comfort of my own home – is my rest day, for obvious reasons. Thursday saw me run a 12 mile route in my fastest time of 1 hour and 29 minutes, a time that deserved me a Nando’s about an hour after.

Saying that, though, throughout my hectic and busy schedule I have actually managed to exercise six days this week. It’s week six now and that achievement in itself is bigger than I could’ve wished for when I began this entire process. The first Monday back after the bank holiday weekend was as you’d expect, sluggish and coffee-fuelled, two words that in week one would have efficiently described my mornings every day. Nonetheless I brushed off the weekend dust and ran a quick four miles after work. Tuesday is the day I train with Max at Farnham Nuffield Health and I exercise myself to near-on tears. Beginning with a quick warmup and a decent stretch I quickly felt the effects of summer. Hot, sweaty and uncomfortable: Max wasn’t going easy on me. A circuit was set up for me and under each cone was an exercise. I’m sure that if you look at the images you’ll get a better idea. The cones were constantly moved by Max when he clocked me going back to the star jumps cone for the sixth time. I was hitting a cone, doing the exercise, sprinting to the fence to sit in a deep squat for five seconds. I mean, look at my face. Look at the pain. In a session that to me felt like two-hours of summertime torture (good torture, don’t get me wrong) I, as always, felt a million dollars afterwards. With just two weeks left of my quest, I’m still learning new things each week. Be that from Max or from personal experiences. I’m enjoying exercise like I haven’t before and I’m craving that post workout buzz I never thought existed. Preach.

Week 7

Week 8

THIS WEEK I ALMOST FAINTED. I FELL TO THE FLOOR LIKE A PUPPET WITH NO STRINGS AND REMAINED STILL. EYES OVERLOADED WITH BLACK SPOTS, HEAD POUNDING AND HANDS FEROCIOUSLY THROBBING. WAS I GOING TO DIE? WAS I EVEN GOING TO FAINT? MOST IMPORTANTLY, THOUGH, HOW LONG WAS LEFT OF MY SESSION?

Eight weeks (and a few more because of that injury) had passed and it was time for my results. I was pretty nervous after a nightmare I had had a few nights before that I’d be the first person to have become even unhealthier following a programme. I hooked up with Max, with my fingers crossed, and to go through the same MOT I did in week one.

It was the toughest week I’d had with Max at Farnham’s Nuffield Health Centre. At points it had me wondering whether after all this work I had regressed, but Max assured me his plans were intentional. It was High Intensity Interval Training (or ‘HIIT’ for those in the know) on the agenda this week and Max’s smirk when telling me was a clear sign I was gonna struggle. But, in fairness, I’ve struggled every single week. High Intensity Interval Training is as it sounds: a system of organizing cardiorespiratory training which calls for repeated bouts of short duration, high-intensity exercise intervals intermingled with periods of lower intensity intervals of active. Thanks Wikipedia. It basically means full-throttle for a short space of time, then rest for a shorter space of time. You get it. We began with ball slams, rope slams, kettle bell deadlifts and sideward jumps. To start it was 12 repetitions of each and then rest. Then 8 repetitions and rest. Then six and then four. You get the idea. The exercises were then switched up slightly with a deadlift-to-press-up type move (I can’t remember its exact name) replacing ball slams. Again: 12, 8, 6, 4. it was then that I began to feel faint. I soldiered on, mind. The rest of the week had been one full of running (over thirty miles) and I’d even signed up for marathon in October. With all Max had taught me, not only my running technique but other helpful exercises too, I felt a final goal was needed – other than losing my beer gut.

Straight to the point: like every girl’s dream, my waist was now smaller and my bum bigger. Jackpot. Max put this down to the squats and hill runs. Phew. Then we measured my height and obviously I was still as short as ever. We then moved onto the real stuff, my insides: how the devil were they feeling? First, my aerobic fitness, or my “VO2 max” to use the correct jargon. Before my quest, it was measured at 39 ml/kg/min – considered ‘poor’ on the scale – compared to the 69 ml/ kg/min it came in at now, considered ‘excellent’. Good start. My resting heart rate, which was at an impressive 57bpm beforehand (Max’s words, not mine), had reduced further to 54bpm. Cholesterol? Yeah, that was down too by 0.65 mmol/L with my blood glucose levels joining in with the trend and decreasing by 0.40 mmol/L. Aside from the stats and figures, I also feel better in myself. I started this feeling sluggish. Lack of sleep, the wrong diet and lack of exercise was all to blame, along with a few other bits, and in just eight weeks I feel new. I’ve gone from running a few miles a week on a treadmill to 14 miles in some sessions and that’s all down to Max. Max has been exceptional. Exceptionally exceptional in fact. My main goal in week one was to find the new me and, as well as finding other important things on the way, I’ve certainly found him.

TEST DRIVE: NEW MINI CONVERTIBLE By Rossyln Rouse

We took a spin in the new MINI Convertible, courtesy of Vines of Guildford MINI. *Spoiler alert* we really rather liked it… Being the driver of an automobile that resembles a small tractor (and steers like one), which instead of having a built-in sat-nav has an actual compass, I jumped at the chance to pilot the new MINI convertible – cue over-sized sunglasses and a head scarf flying off in the wind, Bridget Jones styley. My first thoughts were of lots of posing opportunities - my local is famed for its abundance of gorgeous new cars, and the familiar yet striking sight of a roof-down MINI looked completely at home. So the first box is ticked – the aesthetics are a strong suit… Journeying home was a pleasant surprise at how easily my new MINI friend took the country roads and the numerous pot holes. My initial findings were proven correct and the steering was indeed incredibly tight, making navigating these treacherous roads an absolute delight. Musings aside, the new MINI convertible truly is a marvel. It is surprisingly spacious given its name – I was able to fit my 6 foot 4 boyfriend in the passenger seat (I wasn’t however, able

to stop him being a backseat driver). The boot is surprisingly spacious when the roof is up and would easily fit an overnight bag in it (if you aren’t at the mercy of an equine companion and are the type to swan off for luxury long weekends). The MINI is extremely functional too. The electrical hood mechanism is quick and easy to use with just a simple touch of a button; it can be adjusted at speeds up to 30mph and can be used as just a sunroof if you don’t fancy ruining your hair. When the roof is closed the multiple layered soft top provides sufficient sound (not to mention heat) insulation, which makes it more comfortable for longer journeys. The gorgeous interior is packed with a whole host of features, including an endlessly useful rain warning! An excellent addition, considering the rather ‘inconsistent’ weather associated with living in good old England. The MINI Convertible also boasts hands-free Bluetooth, sat-nav, park assist and state of the art sound system. The coloured ring around the centre console adds a fun finishing touch, changing colour depending on your chosen driving mode – I mainly opted for maximum go-cart feel. In short, we cannot recommend this new convertible enough. An affordable luxury drive all wrapped up in a gorgeous MINI package…
