FEEL HAPPIER, FEEL HEALTHIER - GO WILD S
urrey Wildlife Trust is urging everyone to get outside and go wild this June, as it launches its 30 Days Wild challenge. The initiative is backed by new research that proves contact with nature really is good for our mental and physical wellbeing. It’s true. Everyone is encouraged do something wild every day from 1 – 30 June - whether you take time out to smell a wildflower, listen to birdsong, go pond dipping, explore a wild place, taste some wild blackberries or plant some seeds. “We’re really excited about getting people of all ages across Surrey engaged with nature through ‘random acts of wildness’ every day in June,” said Surrey Wildlife Trust’s Charlotte Magowan. “These can take a few seconds, a few minutes or a whole day. The key thing is to get involved and to discover and enjoy some of our wonderful wild spaces across the county. Taking part in the 30 Days Wild event is a great way to feel happier, healthier and more connected to nature this summer.” 30 Days Wild is a national campaign headed by the Wildlife Trusts. New research, carried out by the University of Derby following last year’s event, found that people who do something ‘wild’ every day for a month change their attitude to nature and report improvements in their physical and mental wellbeing.
Dr Birgitta Gatersleben, Director of Environmental Psychology at the University of Surrey, said: “There’s a lot of evidence that being outdoors and being exposed to a natural environment has a positive effect on people. Seeing or interacting with nature helps people recover more quickly from stress and mental fatigue, it helps restore cognitive function and makes people feel more relaxed and healthier. People have an inbuilt connection with the natural world, a predisposed need to be related to nature and very short snippets of nature can actually be very beneficial.”
Taking part in 30 Days Wild is free, open to people of all ages and the Trust hopes schools, families, businesses, community groups and individuals will all sign up to go wild.
Michelle Jones, aged 34, who took part in 30 Days Wild in Surrey with her four children last year, claimed the challenge gave the family time to stop and interact with nature in fantastically fun ways.
“By looking out for nature on a regular basis people are more likely to care about and protect it - and that’s what Surrey Wildlife Trust is all about. We’re here to inspire everyone every day throughout June and beyond. Whatever their age, wherever they live, we want everyone to feel they can take part and join thousands of others to make nature part of their life.”
“We giggled as we saw a spider gobble up a fly, gasped as the slimy slugs slithered across our feet and really just stopped and took time to see,” said Michelle. “It soon became a daily ritual with increasing excitement from my children - they loved touching spiders’ webs, hunting for ants and hugging trees. My children can’t wait to do it all over again this year and hopefully they can inspire me with more ideas to get out and be wild!”
“Last year people let their lawns grow wild, adults danced in the rain and families created wild works of art, went star-gazing and made homes for wildlife in their gardens. Even people at work found time for wildlife, taking meetings outside in the sun and transforming work spaces into wildlife habitats,” added Charlotte.
To sign up for a FREE 30 Days Wild pack, complete with a wallchart, stickers, a badge and lots of wild inspiration, simply register at www.wildlifetrusts.org/30DaysWild. Share your 30 Days Wild experiences with us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook using the hashtag #30DaysWild.

Brexit? Over the past few months, we’ve been filling you in on facts and opinions about the upcoming EU membership referendum, popularly known as ‘Brexit’. The referendum takes place on Thursday 23rd June, and there are still a number of events taking place across Surrey. Here are a few for your consideration... Anne Milton Chairs Debate on EU Referendum at G Live/ 16th June Guildford residents and businesses are invited to attend a debate at G Live, chaired by Guildford’s MP Anne Milton, about the arguments for remaining and for leaving the EU. The event, organised by The One London Square Business Forum in association with Chapters Financial, will take place on Thursday 16 June at 8am - 9.30am. The panel of speakers will focus, in particular, on the implications for businesses. They include: • Chris Parker, CEO of London & Scottish International ltd • Keith Churchouse, Chapters Financial Planning • Councillor Paul Spooner, Leader of Guildford Borough Council • Harry Aldridge, Export Business
Owner and former UKIP Parliamentary Candidate Geoffrey Sparks, Partner at Charles Russell Speechlys, a founding member of The One London Square Business Forum, commented, “The debate will be an excellent opportunity for people to be better informed ahead of the vote on 23rd June. It’s important for people to hear about both sides of the argument before making such a crucial decision about which way to vote.” Anne Milton will be hosting a number of debates about Brexit in June. The event on 16th June is for registered guests only. To request an invitation, please contact Virginia Cook at Charles Russell Speechlys on Virginia.cook@crsblaw.com.
European Referendum Debate Farnham Maltings 9th June Ahead of this crucial vote, Farnham Maltings will host a debate with key speakers from each side looking at the key issues of the Referendum such as Immigration and the Economic impacts. The panel for the debate will feature Robert Evans CC & Baroness Parminter on the ‘remain’ side of the debate and Sir Gerald Howarth MP and John Petley on the ‘leave’ side. You can find the details for all of the speakers in our special news article on the debate. If you would like to ask a question at the debate night, please drop them in at the box office or send them to jon.mileman@farnhammaltings.com before 12pm on the day of the debate.

‘Brexit’ or ‘Bremain’? Founder’s Main Lecture Theatre Royal Holloway, University of London, Egham / 7th June During the EU referendum campaign we are being bombarded with talk of political and economic consequences from both sides of the debate, but what are the facts behind the headlines? Three Royal Holloway, University of London academics in the fields of law, business and politics will give you their expert opinion on the constitutional, political and trade issues raised by the EU referendum and what ‘Remain’ or ‘Leave’ might really mean for individuals and businesses in the UK. Visit the beautiful Royal Holloway University for three revealing short talks and your opportunity to put your
questions to the experts during a Q&A session. This will be followed by a drinks reception. The talks will consist of: What would Brexit mean for trade? - Professor Chris Grey The politics of Brexit negotiations. - Dr Giacomo Benedetto What is the EU’s impact on UK law? - Dr David Yuratich This event is free to attend. For further information please contact Dr David Yuratich, david.yuratich@rhul.ac.uk.
Aldershot Leave Rally Empire - High Street, Aldershot / 17th June Should you have decided that you are in the ‘leave’ camp, this campaign rally is for your consideration. As we approach the historic Referendum on Britain’s membership of the EU Sir Gerald Howarth MP, the Member of Parliament for Aldershot and former Defence Minister, invites you to attend a campaign rally in Aldershot on Friday 17th June. The rally will be addressed by some of the leading campaigners for the UK to leave the EU:
The Rt. Hon. Michael Gove MP - the Lord Chancellor Diane James MEP - UKIP Deputy Chairman Danial Hannan MEP - Secretary-General of the Alliance of European Conservatives and Reformists Ma jor General Tim Cross CBE - Former Commander of British Forces in Iraq Buy your tickets and find out more by searching for ‘Aldershot Leave Rally’ on eventbrite.co.uk
Hogs Back Brewery Launches ‘Hogswallop’ for EU Referendum Something to whet the whistle and perhaps a bit of (ironically) Dutch courage before engaging in fierce political debate? Well any excuse is necessary to drink a delicious Hogs Back brew, but why not tie it in with our Brexit info? Surrey based craft brewer Hogs Back is contributing to the EU Referendum debate in their own way - namely with a specially-brewed ale, Hogswallop, which has been available since the start of May. A 4.2% ABV, easy-drinking rye beer, Hogswallop is designed to loosen
the tongues of ‘pub politicians’ and encourage a lively discourse in the run up to the vote. Hogswallop is a malty, rye beer with spicy notes and a hoppy finish. It joins previous Hogs Back seasonal beers marking events of national importance, such as ‘England’s Mourning Glory’, which lamented the home team’s early exit from last autumn’s Rugby World Cup and ‘Hog in the Limelight’ at the 2015 General Election. Genius. Find out more about Hogs Back Brewery at hogsback.co.uk
Don’t Forget to Register to Vote! Don’t forget, if you want to vote in the EU Referendum you’ll need to register. To tackle electoral fraud, changes to the voting systems means that individuals must register themselves. Most people who are already registered to vote have been moved to the new system automatically, so you may not need to do anything. If you do however, it’ll take you less than 5 minutes. Simply visit www.gov.uk/register-to-vote to get it done! There’s no paper form – all you need is your basic details plus your national insurance number. Don’t miss out on your right to vote because you didn’t tap in a couple of details…
where do i go ? You’ll need to take yourself off to your local polling station. It will almost without exception be a stone’s throw from your house. They are open between 7am to 10pm on polling day, and are usually public buildings like schools or local halls – so there’s no excuse not to go… If you’re disabled, your local Electoral Registration Office will be able to help you out, and every polling station must provide at least 1 large print display version of the ballot paper and a special device so that blind and visually impaired people can vote. To find out where your local polling station is, check out your local borough council website.

TO GIVE AND TO TAKE Relationships. We all have them in some form or another. Relationships with our friends, family members, co-workers, boss, and of course our life partner. Our soul mate. Our ‘one’. Often the most sustaining relationship we are personally involved in, we happily operate it with a gentle balance of give and take.
Don’t we? How is it then that statistically one in four women and one in six men suffer from domestic abuse, and within these abusive relationships a vast percentage are non-violent? These relationships operate on the premise of take take take. Perpetrators will isolate victims, control their finances, tell them how to dress, what to eat, when to sleep. They will prevent their partner going to work and manipulate them using threats of violence, rape, or the intervention of social services to take away children. They will humiliate and degrade to such a level that victims spiral into a vortex of continuous fear and uncertainty.
This is coercive control. This is abuse, and is now a crime in its own right. The offence of Coercive and Controlling behaviour can be considered if “the perpetrators behaviour has had “serious effect” on the victim, meaning that it has caused the victim to fear violence will be used against them on at least two occasions or it has had a substantial adverse effect on the victims day to day activities.” The maximum prison term is five years. If you or someone you know is trapped in a controlling relationship you can find help by calling Surrey’s Domestic Abuse helpline in complete confidence on 01483 776822. You can also call Surrey police on 101. In an emergency always dial 999.

G3: Galvanising Guildford Games
Surrey gaming companies are invited to G3 event to galvanise Guildford’s games industry Following on from the success of last year’s event, a second G3 Futures Event, aimed at galvanising the Guildford-based games industry, is taking place at the University of Surrey’s 5G Innovation Centre on 29 June from 5 pm. Free to attend, this will provide an opportunity for local gaming companies to network as well as to learn about the latest innovations from key note speakers and a panel of industry experts. G3 Futures is being organised by The University of Surrey, UKIE (UK Interactive Entertainment trade body) and South East technology law specialist Charles Russell Speechlys. All three organisations are committed to supporting the local gaming industry, helping Guildford to maintain its reputation as a ma jor technology and games hub, often referred to as “the Hollywood of the games industry.” Last year’s event was a huge success – the first time that over one hundred and sixty Guildford-based games developers, representatives from local gaming studios and academics from the University of Surrey gathered together to discuss opportunities to collaborate, share issues and strengthen the renowned Guildford-based gaming community.
G3 Futures 2016 This year’s event will comprise of a key note speech as well as short presentations from regional developers and publishers about key topics including Virtual Reality and Immersive Content. Delegates will have the opportunity to introduce themselves to other attendees and there will be a panel discussion, followed by a BBQ for all delegates.
The University of Surrey will host an Expo, showcasing its latest R&D including 5G mobile, spatial audio and performance capture as well as relevant degree programmes. Dr John Collomosse of the University’s Centre for Vision Speech and Signal Processing (CVSSP) is keen to encourage local developers to come along, “Last year we began conversations about collaboration with the industry and ourselves, and since then we have also run events with our students who are all keen to find out more about the industry. There is huge scope for Guildford to really extend and expand its games footprint and this event is hopefully driving that.” Nick Hurley, Partner at Charles Russell Speechlys and Co-Host of the G3 Futures event added, “Guildford has a proliferation of gaming studios and independent developers who have made games enjoyed by millions of people worldwide. It’s important that we value the contribution this makes to our economy and support the local gaming community. As a valued advisor with a proven track record in the computer games sector, we are excited by the latest G3 Futures event and delighted to be maintaining our support to help galvanise the local gaming community.” Dr Jo Twist, CEO of UKIE commented, “Guildford has a fantastic reputation for creating internationally recognised content from both small innovative studios and large globally renowned games companies. UKIE has many members in the Guildford games community and we are proud to be supporting the G3 event to celebrate their work, promote the expertise of the Guildford hub and encourage links between games businesses and other local enterprises.” To see the full programme for the G3 Futures event on 29 June or to register to attend, please visit www.guildford-games.com.

It’s what they went to school for and it’s the reunion they all said would never happen, but alas, pigs can fly! We caught up with Matt Willis from Busted ahead of their show at Sandown Racecourse this summer to talk new music and the make ups after the break ups.
You play Jockey Club Live this summer at Sandown Park, right after playing an arena tour with Busted for the first time in 11 years – how excited are you to be back together as a band prepping for tour? Do you know what? We’re so stoked about this. It’ kind of what we all never thought would happen is happening. We have all separately said that this would never happen so it’s a real curve ball in our lives at the moment but it feels great. Naturally, you’ll be playing all the bangers from back in the day right, but I understand you guys have written some new material – will the audience be getting to hear any of your new work? We’re going to play a couple of new songs as well. We’re not going to play too many we want to give the fans what they want and we’ll play all the old hits but we will give them a little snippet from the new record. Is it still the same pop punk flavour or are you doing something a bit different these days? It is different. Sonically it’s very different but it’s still us, it’s still the three same guys writing the songs and playing. It’s very much us but it’s a representation of where we are right now you know? It’s different to old Busted and it would be because we’re 30 year old men now, we’re not 16 years old boys anymore so it’s obviously going to be different. So last time around with Busted, you were these crazy pop punk lads spreading the sound of punk to the masses – a lot can change in a decade – have you guys mellowed out at all or will the fly kicks be out in full force come the tour? I think we’re all the same people and that was very apparent when we started to hang out again. We’re all still exactly the same, we’re just a little bit older and potentially wiser. I think
that’s what we kind of love about it is that it’s still us but we’re very much in control of everything we do right now. We were so young, so naïve. We just wrote these songs in a formula that worked but perhaps didn’t make us all feel completely comfortable and happy. But we’re not that anymore, we’re a bit older and we’re making sure that what we do now makes us all creatively happy. You’ve said that this time around you’re going to be taking the project one tour at a time and not necessarily rushing anything – with that in mind when can fans expect a new record from you? I hope for the record to be out this year. We’re finishing it up right now and hoping for people to hear stuff really soon but we’re re all really focussed on the tour and the summer shows at the moment. People could potentially be hearing things by the time we play Sandown in July but let’s keep our fingers crossed because you know, we get all excited, we write the music and then we get mixing it and things make a little bit longer sometimes for everything else to get in place but we’re really excited about it and can’t wait to release some new music. It seemed so concrete that you guys weren’t going to be getting back together – how much of a surprise was that re-formation for you? A huge surprise. We had been talking with Charlie for the past couple of years. There were multiple points in our life where we all thought this was definitely done and was never going to happen, a good like nine years you know? But some things just change, we all started chatting and hanging out and it became apparent that we were all creatively on the same page and at the same points in our life where we all just wanted to do something and it just felt natural and right to do it. As you’re playing at the races at Sandown, who would win in a race between yourself James and Charlie? Probably James. James is quite fast, he ran for his school and ran for the county too. He was in the nationals mate! James is a good runner. I’m looking forward to Sandown. Loads of my mates are coming; I was born in Surrey and grew up in Molesey. I lived there till I was 16 so it’s going to be a really good show, loads of fun. I actually worked at Sandown Racecourse when I was about 16. I directed traffic in the car park for a couple of weekends, had a high vis vest and a walkie-talkie and just used to get high and chat s**t to my mate Vinnie. Naughty.

JUNE 2016
Haslemere Fringe Festival Taking place on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd July, Haslemere Fringe Festival is one of the county’s best loved festivals. Taking place biennially, 2016 promises to be the best one yet – here’s why…
Festival season is well and truly upon us now reader. The sun is out (sometimes), the weather is warmer (mostly) and the days are long (unarguable). And while the Glastonbury’s and Bestival’s of the world are undoubtedly a memorable weekend, should you fancy something a little more intimate and geographically suitable, a festival such as the wonderful Haslemere Fringe is an absolute must. Running since 2010, this event takes place every other year and is put on by members of the local community to celebrate alternative music, art, dance, comedy, photography and
much more. As well as promoting up and coming artists, the festival brings together local schools, clubs and societies to showcase young talent as well as support local businesses and craftsmen. Located in the heart of Haslemere, this event attracts over 4,000 visitors seeking a family friendly festival experience – a pretty healthy number of attendees we say. But what more of what you can expect on the day? Who and what will be there to keep you (and the family) entertained? Let us find out…
Music First of all, let us draw you to the most important part of any festival – the music. While you might think that a relatively small town festival might not be able to boast much in the way of household names, you would in fact be totally wrong! Saturday’s headliners are From the Jam, featuring original The Jam bassist Bruce Foxton. The legendary musician brings punk and mod to the festival and on Sunday, it arguably gets even more exciting – Chas and Dave are headlining… We need not go into the joys of the cockney duo, for you are all surely familiar, but there are other acts of note performing over the weekend. Friday’s headliners are Flight Brigade, a hotly tipped act that have been compared to none other than Arcade Fire. Praise indeed. Other performers include the likes of forward-thinking jazz/math-pop purveyors Signals, village folk (complete with beatboxing) comes courtesy of CoCo and the Butterfields, and the riotous stylings of the Charley Farley Sunday Four and local singer-songwriter Emma Stevens will perform. And this is merely scratching the surface too – be sure to check out their website for further details.
TheGuide2Surrey.com/Entertainment
Workshops The amazing Sussex Steel will be organising a number of steel pan workshops during the Fringe, giving you the opportunity to learn to play these magnificent instruments under the guidance of experienced tutors. There will also be free 20 minute Music Works workshops for Drums, Keyboards, Guitar and Vocals courtesy of The Music Works, who will be on site all weekend. And if that wasn’t enough, Marco Frankland from Good Gracious Music will be running a series of ukulele workshops on both Saturday and Sunday.
Family Thought they wouldn’t cater to the kids at Haslemere Fringe Festival? But of course they do. This year’s children’s’ theme of GIANT mini beasts, FYI… The kids’ tent will be host to an action packed programme full of fun and creative activities including drama workshops, music and movement sessions, arts and crafts, storytelling, dance, face painting and entertainers. The activities – courtesy of local companies, Molly Moocow and The Man in the Moon - will run throughout the Saturday and Sunday afternoons. On Sunday afternoon, Professor Dill will be here with his celebrated Punch and Judy show. Professor Dill’s show is the traditional fast paced knockabout comedy, featuring all the well-loved characters: the baby, the crocodile, a ghost and the giant spider. Finally there will be a fun fair on site to enable everyone, both young and old to enjoy a Big Wheel, roundabouts and a big slide.
ENTERTAINMENT
Dance, Theatre and Art The list of arts on show here is just fantastic. There will be live dance at Haslemere Fringe Festival, with Street, Classic, Contemporary, Bollywood, Dance Theatre and much more on show. If you’re a fan of theatre, do not miss productions of the Vagina Monologues and The Singular Exploits of Sherlock Holmes, created by the wonderfully named Don’t Go Into The Cellar! Theatre Company. And if that isn’t enough art how about some actual, erm… art? For 2016, Andrew Brighty a local Blacksmith will be on site with his mobile forge finalising the touches to a piece of artwork that will be a lasting memorial to the Arts and Crafts movement in Haslemere. Oh, and there’s a strongperson competition in the arena too.
Comedy and Slam Poetry There is yet more live entertainment at Haslemere Fringe Festival, esteemed reader, for there will be live comedy and slam poetry across the weekend too. Comedy sets will all be compered by Andy Stedman, an incredibly popular local comedian, singer/ songwriter, and much more besides, and names like Matt Forde (HIGNFY, Mock the Week) and Aussie giant Colin Cole are scheduled to perform. Live poetry will come from the likes of Geoff Allnutt, aka The Speech Painter, Lucy English and others, and there will even be a Poetry Slam Competition, in which local senior schools will battle head to head. Expect moving, funny and evocative performances.
INFORMATION While we’ve given you an idea of what to expect in terms of frivolities at the Haslemere Fringe Festival, here are a few useful bits of info. The Haslemere Fringe Festival is located on Lion Green, in Weyhill, Haslemere, Surrey, bounded by Lion Lane and the Liphook Road. Festival times are Friday from 5pm – 10pm, Saturday 11.30 am – 10.30pm and Sunday 11.30 am – 10.30pm. Adult tickets are £6 on the Friday evening and £10 on the Saturday and Sunday should you pre-book at lionfest.co.uk; otherwise they are £10 and £15 respectively. Children’s tickets (ages 10 to 16) are £3 for early bird
and £6 on the door. Kids under 10 go free! Full three day tickets are £22 for an adult and £8 for children. We’re sure you’ll agree these ticket prices are very reasonable indeed; great lengths are taken to keep tickets prices as low as possible providing outstanding value and accessibility for all. THE REIGATE CAVES
9th July & 13th August | Reigate There’s a few things in Surrey that might surprise you and it was a bit of a revelation to us that there are caves that are open on certain days for tours in Reigate. It turns out the town is riddled with old sand mines. The mound where Reigate Castle once stood is all sandstone and although the mining stopped ages ago, some of the excavations are there. The Wealden Cave & Mine Society run tours of the “Reigate Caves”, and it’s a really interesting day for the family. The two open days this summer are the 9th of July and the 13th of August.

BUILD A RAFT The annual tradition and sea faring spectacle that is the Guildford Lion's Raft Race returns to the banks of the River Wey in Guildford town centre this July, so what better skill to learn this month than that of a good ol' raft build? The bottom line is, we don’t want to go too crazy or expensive so I figure we look at using stuff that can be found cheaply or even better for free. So let’s use pallets. Pallets are great, they’re strong, floaty (technical term that) and also 9 times out of 10, local businesses can’t wait to be rid of them once they’ve got their deliveries.
Here’s your Shopping/beg & borrow list •
•
4 shipping pallets (They need to be a good size, ideally about 40”by 40”/100cm/100cm) About 20 bits of 2 by 4 and they need to be at least 6 foot long, but preferably 7 foot At least 4 inner tubes, ideally quite thick ones
• • • • •
Rope Screws Drill/screwdriver Swear box Child/children/wife to stand around offering titbits of useful advice like “is it done yet?” or “Are you sure?”
step 1 Get the pallets flat on the ground setting them side by side, not on top of one another. This newly created wooden frame will soon be the floor of your raft and we should have a nice big floor area. Get the tools out and use your drill or screwdriver to screw the pallets together. A pallet is made up of horizontal boards on the bottom, usually 6 or seven Blocks that then has another series of horizontal boards on top. Once you’ve got the pallets in a 2 x 2 configuration the “blocks” of the two adjacent pallets should “butt-up” to one another.
step 2 At this point go ahead and use the screws to connect one pallet to the one directly next to it.
step 3 Right, beer / green tea / aloe juice break.
TheGuide2Surrey.com/Family
FAMILY
step 4 Now get your 2 x 4 and get them side by side on the top of the four pallets. Best bet at this stage is to lay them so that they are perpendicular to the boards of the pallets, that way we’re building a little strength in. The new boards should run the entire length of the wooden frame, really, but if you could only get shortish ones it’s no drama just as long as you’ve covered most of the frame so you have something to stand on and look good. However, the boards should span where each pallet joins the other so there’s extra strength where you screwed them together. This will now have secured the four pallets into one large raft.
step 5 Now it’s time to blow up your inner tubes and flip over your pallet-of-glory so that we’re now looking at the underside of the raft. Start lashing (navy term that) the inflated inner tubes to the bottom of the raft. It should be easy as you can thread rope through here and there. Now flip the thing over. It will be at this point that you realise you should have done this closer to the water. Before testing this bad boy out put on a life vest/PFD/life jacket. You are a grown man responsible for your own safety. Don’t be a prat; put on a life vest. Now test it out and consider how you should decorate it.
For more Dad's the Word, visit theguide2surrey.com
Whether you build a raft or not, we highly recommend venturing to the banks of Millmead on the 2nd July for Guildford Lions' annual Raft Race. For more information visit guildfordlions.com

Guildford Beer Festival 10th – 11th June / Guildford Cricket Club
We’ve said it before and we’ll say it until we’re blue in the face – the words ‘beer’ and ‘festival’, when placed together, form the most glorious of event titles. It evokes the excitement of summer - supping on a glorious ale, the hazy delights of wondering around a green field. Magic. And we can scarcely think of a better example of this than the Guildford Beer Festival, taking place as ever on Guildford Cricket Club - The Sports Ground in Woodbridge Road, very close to Guildford town centre and its mainline rail and bus stations - over three sessions on the 10th and 11th June. The GBF will feature around 80(!) different cask ales, sourced from independent and microbreweries in Surrey, Hampshire, Sussex and Berkshire. There will also be a wide selection of ciders, and a separate bar with wines and soft drinks, so you don’t even need to love beer to attend. Oh, and don’t worry about our famous British weather - there is cover in two large marquees with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. Free parking is also available at the ground. Indeed while there are numerous reasons to visit, we feel that one of the best aspects of GBF is the inclusive feel of the
event. There has often been a misconception that the beer festival is the pursuit of a certain ‘type’ of individual and that it doesn’t offer enough for your average, casual IPA-sipper. Not so here; the emphasis of merriment, live music and enjoyment means that the festival has gone from a niche, small event to one of the most important dates on Guildford’s summer calendar. Ticket prices per person are £10 for each of the three sessions. CAMRA members receive tokens entitling them to free tokens upon production of their current CAMRA membership card. The admission price includes a free GBF tasting glass and souvenir colour programme. Tickets may be purchased online at or in person at the Guildford Tourist Information Office, 155 High Street, Guildford GU1 3AJ. For more information and tickets visit guildfordbeerfestival.co.uk

JUNE 2016
WHERE TO EAT: WORPLESDON Always a welcoming destination, the revived Worplesdon Place and its fresh new menus demand a visit now more than ever… “Dear God, please not a Beefeater,” was my instinctive reaction when Worplesdon Place first appeared on our spring schedule. Now I grant you that the once ubiquitous chain of family and budget-friendly restaurants do have their charms, and their fans, but the very thought of visiting a restaurant whose notoriously bland and bloated menus and family-sized feasts emerge primarily from the depths of a deep fat fryer made my left arm go numb, regardless of how many free passes at the salad bar they promise. But when my knee finally stopped jerking I looked a little closer, and discovered that the inarguably lovely
location of Worplesdon Place had gone and gotten itself new owners, a new team, a new menu and a new lease of life. Who knew!? (Me, if I’d been doing my job right). So it was with pleasant anticipation that we visited this popular pub-restaurant and hotel in leafy Worplesdon. Outside, sweeping green lawns, towering pines and a picturesque lake rippling with waterfowl and other wildlife offers an immediate sense of peaceful escape, with more al-fresco seating than you can shake a British summertime at. Inside greets you with a sprawling bar with plenty of choices for where to sit: beneath the large windows overlooking the gardens and lake perhaps, or nestled into one of many cosy corners or nooks. The bar space segues smoothly into a restaurant proper, and tonal splashes of cool greys and warm Tuscan reds and ambers throughout play nicely beneath coppertone lighting and the faux-marble trimmings. The lunch menu is a mercifully focused departure from the Beefeater days, with enough sandwiches, salads, lighter
nibbles and mains to please most diners that might breeze through without overwhelming them. But they’ve retained the pub classics and rotisserie options, and rightly so. We warmed up with a selection of steaming, aromatic Mediterranean breads and hummus before falling on a perky starter of bubble and squeak – a fritter of earthy-sweet root veg topped with an oozing egg, a spot-on hollandaise and super-crisp leaves of pancetta– and disarmingly chunky hunks of battered squid with a sweet chilli dipping sauce. So far, so good but the Place’s tried and true slow-roasted rotisserie lamb had me sold for mains. While it pleaded for a classic gravy, I took a punt instead on a Cuban chilli and lime dressing. Such reckless nonchalance rewarded me with little more than a greasy slick of spicy oil over my meat and roasties (by my own clumsy hand), but the lamb itself was exceptionally tender, parting in sweet and fibrous deliciousness. Across from this rude pleasure was a lighter, more refined dish of kedgeree and poached egg, the subtle smokiness of the haddock balanced well with a bright drizzle of curried yoghurt.

PLACE
By Rich Lee
The dessert menu plays it a little safe with its chocolate brownies and sticky toffee puddings, but an Eton mess was an easy, summery choice. I did wonder if they’d taken the recipes’s name a bit too literally however, as it had the appearance of being blasted at the plate from the business end of a pudding cannon. Still, sweet-sharp berry fruits, cool whipped cream and crisp meringue are a combination that can easily rise above presentation, if you’re inclined to overlook such things. Regardless, thanks to new owners Red Comb Pubs, this unique establishment finally has a menu that begins to do the marvellous location and building the justice it deserves, while retaining the good value and friendly welcome that has sustained it over the years prior. And if the weather keeps up, Worplesdon Place is handily the place to come for some al fresco, good-time grazing over the summer months and beyond. Find out more at worplesdonplace.co.uk

s
Ashtanga Yoga Whether it is the full 90 Primary Series, or a short form in our 75 & 60 minute classes, the Ashtanga series of asanas works to generate flexibility and strength in the entirety of the body to ensure a full practice is received and a feeling of length and strength is felt in the body when you leave.
yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy Red Hot Yoga
Earlier this year, Guildford’s Red Hot Yoga celebrated its fifth birthday. Founded in 2011 by Clarissa Robertson & Nick Ord, who had the vision to create a dedicated Yoga venue in the heart of Surrey that offered somewhere for people of any ability and experience to take part. They started with the Hot studio – after 10 years of teaching hot yoga in studios across the world, Clarissa wanted to bring the joy of hot yoga to Guildford. In March 2011 the doors to the ‘Red’ studio opened and Red Hot Yoga have been offering students a variety of hot yoga classes ever since, including the signature ‘Red Hot’ class. In 2013 they opened their second floor that housed three new studios. The aim was to become a true multidiscipline Yoga venue and offer as wide a range of Yoga classes as possible. Now in their fifth year, they boast a wonderful community of teachers, staff and students who continue to make the studio such a joyful place. Everyone who heads to Red Hot Yoga is made to feel at home, after all it’s a place to relax, unwind, meet lovely people and have a break from the stresses of modern life. With over eighty classes a week held at Red Hot Yoga, there’s certainly plenty to choose from and it’s understandable if you aren’t too sure which class to choose. We’ve broken down a few of your class options to make things that little easier, nice right?
s
Their signature Hot class. The series focuses predominantly on static postures, with perhaps one or two short flows included. The 90 minute class starts with 45 minutes of standing postures, followed by a 45 minute floor series, with a shorter floor series in the 75 minute classes.
yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy The Beat Goes Om A flowing Vinyasa style class, moving through a carefully planned sequence for all levels; using music to warm the soul as you practise together. Enjoy a soothing Vinyasa flow practise to an expertly choreographed playlist of awesome tunes. This is a very popular class and give it a go and find out why for yourself.
yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy Sivananda The class is designed to calm the mind and reduce stress. With regular practice one can ensure overall physical and mental health and the possible prevention of many health problems. It is a relatively slow paced, yet challenging class. Changing the Perception of Modern Massage
By Rosslyn Rouse
We visited The Massage Company in Camberley to understand how regular massage can improve our quality of life… As someone who has suffered from back pain for years I understand how easy it is to put aside the pain, pop a pill and make a resolve to get it sorted at a later date. However we all know the outcome – it never happens! So for a long term fix, regular massage could be the answer. With this in mind, we paid a visit to The Massage Company… The Massage Company first opened its doors on 18th March 2016 in the fabulously convenient location of Pembroke Broadway (situated underneath the Travelodge, by the train station) in Camberley. With an abundance of close parking and located close to Camberley’s public transport, The Massage Company is easily accessible for both residence as well as the towns thriving workforce. Complete with 14 minimal but beautifully designed treatment rooms, including a duo room for those that would like to share the experience, the interior is tastefully designed and has a lovely feel from the
moment you enter the building to the moment you strip off. Having previously worked in Virgin Active Charlie Thompson, founder of The Massage Company, came to the conclusion that we needed to think about massage differently. Until recently the only way of having a massage was at a spa or possibly gym with varying degrees of quality. The concept is already available in the States and proving very popular, over 2000 centres have opened in the last 10 years. Customers can take their regular monthly massage in exchange for their direct debit payments. It has changed the way people consume massage across the country over this time with now nearly 20% of adults take treatments vs only 8% in the UK. Chatting to Charlie he explained why he feels so passionate about this concept… “Here, we’ve got to make it easier to benefit from massage; to make it routine, good quality and good value – changing habits from once-in-ablue-moon to once a month, and to transform it from a treat or luxury to a vital part of a better and balanced life. It’s why we chose the convenience and accessibility of Camberley, why we offer a variety of optional upgrades, and why we’ve developed our certified
Training Programme to ensure every customer gets a very good experience. Being open 7 days a week, and until 9pm weekdays makes this possible.” With our hectic lifestyles and busy day jobs it can be so easy to dismiss pain and stress as it seems too difficult to take time out to organise appointments. Harlequins Heartbreak in Lyon Singing Bowls at Red Hot Yoga Red Hot Yoga Guildford 5th June What in God’s name is Singing Bowls, you say? Here it is: Tibetan Singing Bowls generate powerful, intense healing vibrations which stimulate our feelings of peace and relaxation, this allows the release of stress and any other blocks that may set deep inside our inner self, on a cellular level. Okay? Good. The benefits of a sound bath are immense; they are: energetically cleansing, lifting up our energy, increasing vital strength, deep relaxation, stress reduction, increase and accelerates the healing process, wakes up our inner beliefs, increases intuitions and triggers the act of creation and inspiration. Meeting with the singing bowls sound makes you aware of closeness, empathy, acceptance, humility, courage, gratitude, forgiveness. The experience in itself is said to be like a mirror that reflects all situations which you experience in your life. But you should really just try it for yourself. Click here for more information! www.redhotyoga.co.uk
Conor O’Shea’s six-year reign in charge of Harlequins came to an end with a battling defeat by Montpellier in the European Challenge Cup final in Lyon. Jesse Mogg’s well-constructed try put the Top 14 highflyers 10 points ahead, only for three Nick Evans kicks to drag the score back to 13-9 at half-time. But Mogg’s second touchdown and Demetri Catrakilis’ accuracy from the tee put Montpellier in command after the break. The French side held on to lift the cup despite Marland Yarde’s late try. The match ended in bizarre circumstances when, with 80 minutes already up on the clock and Quins looking to mount one final attack from deep, replacement fly-half Ben Botica, who is joining the French side next season, kicked the ball long into opposition territory. That gifted Montpellier possession and gave them the opportunity to launch the ball out of play and secure the trophy. The result means Harlequins, who finished seventh in the Premiership following a brutal 62-24 last-day loss to Exeter Chiefs, will again miss out on Champions Cup rugby next season.

LE GUIDE DES CHAMPIONNATS D’EUROPE 2016 Remember that time we all spiralled into deep depression as our brave and mighty Three Lions weren’t brave or mighty at all and let us all down with another underwhelming showing at another major international tournament? That was two years ago and it’s almost time for it to happen again. For the first time the European Championship final tournament will be contested by 24 teams, up from the 16-team format used since 1996. France was the first country to host the Euros way back in 1960 and this year the tournament returns to the glorious country of wine, cheese and beautiful buildings, making it the perfect destination for football fans to visit. But, for those not travelling across the English Channel, why not make the most of the impending disappointment with our Guide 2 Enjoying Euro 2016 in Surrey? So without further ado, we’ve broken down everything you need to know about this summer’s shenanigans in France and how to enjoy it from the comfort of our own delicious county…
England Details England open their Euro 2016 campaign against Russia in Marseille on June 11th. They then face Wales in Lens on June 16th with their final group game seeing them go up against Slovakia in Saint Etienne on June 20th. Yet Hodgson will hope that isn’t their Euro 2016 done and dusted then, with the quarter-finals between June 30th and July 3rd. The semi-finals are then on July 6th and 7th, before the final on July 10th.

Dele Alli ENGLAND
Paul Pogba France
Two seasons ago the young Tottenham midfielder had only just begun to turn heads in League One with MK Dons. Now, after scooping a handful of accolades in this season’s Premier League he’s one of the most exciting players in Europe. If England are to go far in this tournament, there’s no doubt Dele Alli will have a big part to play.
An obvious player to pin-point, but it had to be done. The 23-year-old has been arguably Juventus’ best player over the last four seasons and has been integral in the club’s recent Serie A success. Pogba has grown impressed on the international scene too, with manager Didier Deschamps tipping him to take this tournament by storm.

Breel Embolo Switzerland
Michy Batshuayi Belgium
David Alaba Austria
A player I’d imagine is unheard to many, but at just 19 the Swiss international has nearly every ma jor club in Europe looking at him. Making his senior debut for his club Basel in 2014 at the age of just 17, Embolo has gone on to be a regular starter either up front or on the wing, and scored an impressive 17 goals last term.
The young Belgian will be a new name for many readers, but is highly rated around Europe after impressing in Ligue 1 for Marseille. The 23-year-old netted 17 times in the league last season as well as providing assists on 9 occasions. Having represented his country just twice, scoring in both appearances exemplifies the potential Batshuayi possesses.
The Bayern Munich defender-cummidfielder has emerged as one of the world’s best free-kick takers in recent years. Playing at left-back for the Bavarian side but as a playmaker for Austria, the versatile youngster remains influential to both sides. Austria stormed their qualifying group and I wouldn’t be surprised if they went far in the competition.

SPORT
JUNE 2016
By Tayler Willson
The Quest to Find the Best Me: Part one Our sports writer, Tayler, begins an eight week programme to find the new him. Ditching the Pot Noodles for salad and the beer for green tea, he details the first four weeks of his plan and how he’s getting on at the half-way point… Someone at work recently warned me that my life will almost certainly swirl into a downward spiral when I turn 25 and that there’s basically nothing I can do about it. I’m going to get really fat, be really miserable and lose any sign of youthfulness that still remained from my formative teenage years. As much as I’d laugh at the wild accusations I’d be faced with when reaching 25 – as well as questioning the, almost certainly, minimal amount of research into these theories – I’d been having restless nights. Even when I did reach my slumber, it would soon morph into an all-too-realistic nightmare of an obese me struggling into the office with regret plastered on my chunk fat forehead with the sound of a sousaphone on my every step because I’d become an absolute joke. So I was keen to swerve that if possible. I was 24 then (I still am now) so I didn’t have much time. Like many do, I used January as a platform to start my healthier approach to life. Visiting the gym four-times-a-week dwindled down to two, whilst my diet went from kale and avocado, to chips and gravy. I managed to lose 10lbs during January, but I was yet to feel better in myself. Weight loss is one thing, but feeling healthier is another - and I’m after both. With this in mind – and my twenty-fifth looming over me like a big, depressing umbrella – I headed to Farnham’s Nuffield Health for a body MOT, a talk about food stuff and to put together a contingency plan to save me before it’s too late and over the following eight weeks, I’d be diarising and sharing my progress. I started with a body MOT so I had a clear understanding of my results at the end of the eight week. Here are the first four weeks of new regime, with the final four coming in July’s magazine. Enjoy…
Week 1 Following my initial week of realisation and coming to terms with fact I’m pretty unhealthy, I had to change a few things in my day-to-day routine. The obvious alterations after meeting Lillian (Nuffield’s Nutritionist) – excessively eating takeaways and drinking beer – were expected and altered immediately. I swapped crisps and doughnuts for seeds and fruit, whilst my usual chicken nugget dinner became a more balanced and healthy arrangement. I met Max, my Personal Trainer at Nuffield Health for the eight weeks, and we discussed my goals. I explained that I enjoyed running and how I’d managed to avoid lifting weights for over five years. We devised a plan that would revolve around my love of running and one that would also help me achieve my target of becoming an all-round healthier guy. As I explained, I wasn’t only looking to rid of my beer belly, but to my lifestyle into one a lot healthier and improve my all-round wellbeing – an aspect Nuffield prides themselves on improving.
WEEK 2 After an early Sunday night - in anticipation of the “new me” starting the day after - I swapped my dry-piece-of-toast-as-I-run-outof-the-house-in-the-morning breakfast with some overnight oats and natural yoghurt, lightly sprinkled with some seeds - an easy yet delicious breakfast I’ve continued since. I met up with Max during the week for the first of my sessions. Along with thoroughly putting me through my paces, he taught me how to run properly and efficiently, as well as giving me exercises and moves to do during my own workouts at home and at my local gym.
SPORT
TheGuide2Surrey.com/Sport
I spent the free time I had at home practicing the given exercises and teaching my body new areas. I managed a few runs – nothing of any significance – but I was using the week to plan and prepare, as well as ease my body into the swing of things. I had football on the Sunday, too, which was a workout, albeit Sunday league.
With what we had left of the session, Max ensured I wasn’t getting away too lightly and moved me onto some traditional upper-body work. Chin-ups, shoulder press and some more floor exercises. All of which almost guaranteed I’d be aching to tears come morning.
Week 4 Week 3 AFTER A TWO WEEK HICCUP IN MY QUEST TO FIND THE BEST ME, I WAS BACK ON COURSE AND BACK FOCUSSED ON ACHIEVING WHAT I INITIALLY SET OUT ON DOING: FINDING A BETTER ME. The two week hiccup was courtesy of a horrendous tackle from a guy with a ponytail, a girly shriek from yours truly and a couple of sprained ligaments, all combined into one game of football that we eventually lost 4-3. I don’t know why I bother sometimes. Ahead of my return session with Max at Nuffield Health Centre the next day, I used Monday to give the knee a good once-over and completed my first run since the incident. After tying an ice pack to my knee after a sad and sorry three miles, I was probably okay for my session the next day. As luck had it, I didn’t wake up to a totally swollen knee and after my usual oats and natural yoghurt breakfast plus a few cups of pretty damn strong black coffee, I headed to Nuffield to feel the burn. Naturally Max was keen to learn as to where abouts I was in my recovery and put me through a few thorough tests. It turns out that doing next to nothing for two weeks can have quite the effect on one’s body: tight muscles, which means limited movement, which means I’ve regressed. From being unable to bend down and touch the floor at the beginning of the session, some dynamic stretching and a stint on the roller seemed to have done the trick as I could feel my body being worked for the first time in weeks.
Week four and I was noticing differences already, not only in my exercise, but in my general well-being, too. It evaded my mind the last time I woke up to the sound of my alarm and immediately racked my brain for any excuse as to why I’m almost certainly going to be late for work because I couldn’t think of anything worse than getting up and leaving the house. This was one of the main problems I highlighted to the nutritionist before I started this whole thing. The main bulk of the answer was down to my diet. Swapping late night meals for early nights, coffee for green tea and vegetables for Pot Noodles has made a noticeable difference. This week’s session with Max was my hardest yet. I’d come to learn, now, to never try and show off to a Personal Trainer because they’ll just push you harder. Something I learnt the hard way when tyre-flipping. Being pushed is what I needed and Max was teaching me well. This week alone, when training at home or in my free time, I’ve ran just shy of 30 miles, that’s about 20 miles more than I’ve ever managed in a single week. Now half-way through my quest and over my injury, I’m really beginning to feel the benefits of what I’ve been doing so far. Taking on board what Max has taught me and adapting them to my home routine, as well as eating and drinking properly and efficiently, is something I’ll keep way beyond this quest. But for now I remain focussed and determined to see what comes my way next week.

MAKING SENSE OF MINDFULNESS
By Richard Stiles
What’s the buzz about Mindfulness? You’ve probably heard of mindfulness. We seem to hear it everywhere these days, from politicians to head teachers, from your local GP to Ruby Wax. Everyone’s jumping on the band wagon. So what’s the buzz all about? Mindfulness is not new. It has been around for thousands of years in eastern traditions but has taken off in the West relatively recently. Over the past 30 years or so, many studies have shown that practicing mindfulness regularly can increase your sense of well-being, your tolerance to pain and your ability to concentrate. It can also help with depression, anxiety and feelings of stress. Mindfulness is simply about paying attention to what’s happening right now, without judging it. You don’t have to be sitting on top of a mountain wearing an orange toga to practice. It’s not mystical or about reaching a spiritual Nirvana but simply being aware of your life as it’s unfolding, moment by moment. You can do it anywhere, at any time. Here’s a question for you. When was the last time you noticed your little toe? Probably when you stubbed it on a door, right? We notice our bodies when we are in pain. How about noticing them when we are at peace?
How do we do it? There are two parts to mindfulness practice. There’s the formal or sitting mediation for 10-20 minutes a day. This is where we exercise our mindfulness muscle - a bit like going to the gym but for the mind. We purposefully sit and pay attention to something, often the breath. When our mind wanders, which it will, we simply bring it back to the breath. If the mind wanders one thousand times, we bring it back one thousand times. There’s no judgement about doing it right or wrong. We just notice what there is.
The second part is an informal practice of becoming more aware as we go about our day. It might be noticing how it feels to get up out of a chair or to walk to the fridge. Every moment is an opportunity to practice. Practicing a formal mediation on a daily basis will make this easier.
My top 5 mindfulness tips 1.
Keep it simple. There’s no need for the ‘correct’ posture or scented candles and chimes. Just follow your breath. Try it now.
2.
Be kind to yourself. If your mind wanders you’re not doing it wrong. Your mind is designed to wander. Noticing that your mind is elsewhere is a moment of awareness.
3.
Use all of your senses. What do you see, smell, taste, hear, feel?
4.
Slow down. Try doing everything at half the normal speed. Make each movement purposeful.
5.
Take time in the morning. When you wake up don’t just jump out of bed. Take a moment to notice the weight of your body on the mattress. Notice your breathing. Welcome yourself to this new day.
