BABY BOOM FOR SURREY WILDLIFE TRUST’S CONSERVATION COWS!
S
urrey Wildlife Trust’s grazing team is celebrating the patter of tiny hooves, with the arrival of dozens of new calves at its farm near Wisley. The baby cows are being born to the Trust’s specialist herd of Belted Galloway cattle, which are used across the county for conservation grazing. Steve Proud, Surrey Wildlife Trust’s Farm Manager said: “The calves are undeniably cute, but they also have a really important role to play in the conservation of heathland and chalk grassland habitats in the county and the preservation of the wildlife that lives there.” The team at Pond Farm are expecting
more than 90 new arrivals, which will bring the Trust’s herd to around 400 animals. Affectionately known by some members of the public as ‘Oreo Cows’ because of their black markings, with a white band around their middle, the cows are becoming a familiar sight in the Surrey countryside.
animals can access areas that machinery can’t. Cows have less impact than burning or cutting would, so allowing slower moving species to thrive. The way that cows feed creates a mosaic effect, with tussocks and longer areas of vegetation left behind, creating greater variety in the habitat.
The Trust uses its animals to graze its land around the county including Chobham Common, Newlands Corner, near Guildford and Thundry Meadows, near Elstead. It also grazes on behalf of other landowners including The National Trust, on sites such as Box Hill, near Dorking and Petersham Meadows, near Richmond. Grazing is the most natural method of looking after the landscape and the
The Trust started its conservation grazing project with just three animals in 2007. As well as some 400 cattle, it now has goats and sheep. It also uses deer for managing habitats in the county.
THE WOKING PEREGRINE PROJECT Sea cliffs and upland crags are the traditional breeding habitat of the Peregrine falcon; however, in recent years they have increasingly been recorded in towns and cities across the U.K. Just fifty years ago, the peregrine came close to extinction in the British Isles due a catastrophic decline through toxic pesticides in their food chain, which were subsequently withdrawn. The recovery and increase in the peregrine population has led to wider distribution and new occupation of lowland counties, where peregrines can now be found nesting in quarries and on urban ‘cliffs’ such as office and residential blocks, cathedrals and churches. Peregrines have been regularly recorded in Woking since 2001, often to be seen on the top of Export House, the tallest building in the town centre. Regular sightings over the past two years of a new pair of peregrines at Export House has resulted in increased interest. A nest box was installed in January 2016, with an internal web cam to record developments, and the Peregrines were seen entering the box about a month later. And thanks to a collaborative project, the Peregrines are proudly watching over a clutch of four eggs, in a specially installed nest box at the top of Export House, the tallest building in Woking. The eggs are expected to hatch at the end of April 2016 and you can watch this remarkable event, live online, and everything that follows via wokingperegrines.com

NORTH DOWNS WAY CAPTURED BY GOOGLE TREKKER In the summer of 2015 the North Downs Way was captured by the Google Trekker; a panoramic Google Street View camera mounted on a backpack designed to go “off-road” to map areas Google has never been before. The North Downs Way applied to Google as the 1st UK National Trail to undertake this to highlight to the public the wonderful landscapes and communities the trail runs through. Starting in Farnham, passing through 153 miles of stunning and varied countryside, the North Downs Way passes through the protected landscapes of the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and the Kent Downs AONB. This makes the trail a great place for a family day out, short walks, life-changing long distance walks, often finishing with a fantastic, rural, rustic pub lunch. The Google images will encourage people to explore the trail from the comfort of their homes and to inspire them to put on their shoes and walk the trail. This will attract many more visitors to the communities and businesses along the trail and will have a positive impact on visitor economy. The launch of the Google images will present opportunities to businesses along the trail to engage, and work with The North Downs Way in order to promote their products and services to visitors. All businesses and organisations should think about the potential that this presents and to contact the North Downs Way Manager, Peter Morris with ideas and proposals. The route begins at the impressive new start sculpture in Farnham, Surrey designed locally by FdK Design www.fdk.co.uk and built by the Utopia Forge in Guildford www.utopia-forge.com. The start sculpture was officially opened by Farnham Town Mayor Cllr Pat Frost and Cllr Mike Band, Mayor of Waverley on the morning of 17th March 2016.

What is Brexit? Brexit. That most dreaded portmanteau for those of you seeking to distance yourselves from endless debate and tedious political monotony. However, the referendum is now very much on the horizon, and the decision to leave is not one to be taken lightly. We at The Guide 2 Surrey are an opinionated and political bunch, but we have no interest in swaying your opinion to a particular side. We do however, want to educate and inform those who perhaps need a little bit of info. We’re nice like that. So what do you need to know about Brexit? Here are a few facts for you…
Brexit: Should we stay or should we go By Joe Payne
The EU Referendum takes place on Thursday 23rd June. We spoke to prominent businesspeople and MPs in Surrey to get there take... Sean Kelly Managing Director, Vines BMW Should the UK stay in Europe or leave? Being in Europe means jobs and opportunities for people across Britain, because of the huge quantities of trade and investment linked to our EU membership. If we leave, these current and any potential future advantages will be put at risk. There is an inherent danger if we allow the recent and real issues faced across the UK colour our decisions for the long-term future of the UK; this is a vote that will affect the next 50 years and as such cannot be solely based on the current influences on our country. Twenty first century Improvements in communication and technology are creating opportunities for people to come together more, rather than split apart. If we are going to solve the more difficult long-term challenges ahead (climate change, poverty reduction and global stability etc.) then we have to do this in partnerships, rather than parochially. Is there enough information out there for you to make an informed decision? There is not enough real information, and any that does exist is clouded
by rhetoric and vested self-interest dependent upon which side of the argument you fall upon. In my opinion no-one can foresee the true implications of us remaining or leaving the EU (as they are actually unknowable), this has been proven time and time again with any ‘expert’ assessments of future conditions always wide of the mark. I believe that voters will have to make decisions based on their gut-feel, rather than solid cultural analysis or economic implications swaying an individual’s voting decision. Do you think it will impact you as a business should the UK leave? Undoubtedly, even if this is for the relative short-term (two to five years) as there will be uncertainty for personal economic stability. The default positon for the ma jority in times of uncertainty is to ‘batten down the hatches’ and this would have implications for spending patterns, personal and corporate investment decisions and ultimately any UK economic growth during this period becomes threatened.
Anne Milton MP, (Conservative) Guildford Are you for or against the prospect of the UK’s withdrawal from the EU? Like many people, I am keen to hear the arguments for and against our membership of the European Union. I know that some people have long held and passionate views on both sides of the debate, however for me, like many who are yet to decide finally on how they will vote, the debate over the next few months will be critical in making sure we are well informed. It is one of the few occasions where I can enjoy being a floating voter! How would your preference impact the people of your constituency and Surrey as a whole? As I will not be campaigning on either side of the debate, I am looking forward to hosting a series of meetings around the constituency where people can hear from well informed speakers and have a chance to ask questions. I am delighted that there will be a chance for people to hear the arguments on both sides and make their own decision in the referendum. This is a big decision for the future of our country and an important opportunity for British people to have their say.

Should the UK stay in Europe or leave?
Are you for or against the prospect of the UK’s withdrawal from the EU?
I am adamant we should leave the EU. In my opinion it’s been a disaster and I openly support any campaign to leave. It’s costing the UK a fortune and I don’t believe it has a detrimental effect on UK business. Some of our biggest European trade partners, such as Norway, are not in the EU. A large number of business leaders that wish to stay in the EU are from the retail sector, who have a vested interest as they import goods more cheaply from the continent. EU laws are not a democratic process – those who make them are not appointed or accountable – so they are not to the UKs benefit. Is there enough information out there for you to make an informed decision? There is a great level of uncertainty about what would happen if we did leave, so I think that the country will vote to stay in. To my mind being in the EU hasn’t worked, so I don’t agree with the argument that we’re better off if we stay.
Louise Punter Surrey Chambers of Commerce CEO Should the UK stay in Europe or leave? From Surrey Chambers’ perspective, we’re not committing as of yet. We are listening to our own businesses perspective and encouraging them to make their voices heard on the issue, and letting them discuss what impact they believe leaving will have on their business. Is there enough information out there for you to make an informed decision? We don’t believe there is at the moment, and that’s why Surrey businesses need to base their decision on the facts as they stand.
Having thought carefully about this issue, I’ve decided to campaign in favour of leaving the EU. Some of the reasons for my decision are as follows: First, in addition to continuing to trade with the EU, we would be free to strike free trade agreements with other countries on our own terms, rather than in conjunction with the 27 other EU nations. Britain has a proud history as a global trading nation and the economies of the rest of the world are growing far faster than those of the EU. While only 5% of UK businesses actually export their products to the EU, 100% of our businesses have to comply with EU regulation. According to the Government’s own figures, EU bureaucracy currently costs the UK economy £33.3 billion annually. In broader terms, just when the faltering EU economies need to be encouraging innovation, diversity, low taxes and low regulation, the EU too often seeks to do the opposite. My second key consideration is that of sovereignty. The UK has a very long and proud democratic tradition which gives British citizens the right and opportunity to choose and - crucially - to eject our lawmakers in a transparent and accountable way. The EU dictates approximately 60% of our laws and regulations and on the seventy two occasions that the British Government has objected to new EU laws and decisions we have been voted down on every single occasion. This is despite the fact that the UK is the second largest contributor to the EU’s coffers. We send an estimated £350 million every week to the EU - much more than we receive back. For example, last year we gave Brussels £19.1 billion and got back only £9.3 billion in rebates and in money spent in the UK. I would much prefer that this money is put directly at the disposal of our elected Government to spend as it sees fit. Just think what a boost £9.3 billion would give to our NHS! How would your preference impact the people of your constituency and Surrey as a whole?
Cllr Nikki Nelson-Smith Mayor of Guildford, 2015 – 2016 Should the UK stay in Europe or leave? I can’t speak on behalf of the council – we haven’t got a universal view - but my own view is that from the companies that I’ve met we’d miss out quite a lot if we left the EU. Companies have said that they are likely to get contracts that, if we leave, could go to other companies within Europe . From a personal perspective, I believe in Europe and I’d rather sit around a table and be part of a decision making process, as those decisions will affect us and our trade with the EU, whether we are in or not. We get an awful lot from Europe in terms of grants for research and collaboration, particularly medical research and academic research. In Surrey we receive a lot of support in a number of ways that perhaps some people don’t realise - for example EU laws help protect our countryside and EU grants support the upkeep of our historic heathland. If we come out, there may not be trade tariffs but there will be non-tariff barriers that will favour other EU countries like Germany or France. I will definitely be voting in.
Woking and Surrey could gain enormously from the UK leaving the EU. We would gain from the new opportunities to establish free trade agreements with the rest of the world and we could regain a measure of control over immigration to our country. We could invite the brightest and the best from both Europe and the rest of the world to work in our universities, research centres and to support our thriving economy, replacing the lopsided immigration system we have at present.

CHARITY SPOT: Sunflower Trust Mark Mathews has been practising as an osteopath in Guildford for the last 25 years. In addition to being principal of the Rêve Pavilion Natural Health Clinic he has also founded The Sunflower Trust, a charity that seeks to help young people with developmental or behavioural issues to achieve their full potential. He was awarded Charity Innovator of the Year 2015 for developing the Sunflower Programme and has not only helped hundreds of children in that time but is also currently training new Sunflower Practitioners so the charity can better help the children of Surrey.
field! Yet understanding why they are struggling and how best to help them is often a confusing and frustrating process. Whether a child has a formal diagnosis or not, understanding the root cause and the way in which the brain mediates between the mind, the musculoskeletal and the biochemistry of the body, is critical to effectively addressing the problem. A properly functioning brain communicates between both hemispheres, as well as within each hemisphere, at lightning speed. Think of these communications like runners in a relay race: They connect, pass on information, and release, repeating this process millions of times a minute around the body via the nervous system. In a poorly functioning nervous system, these runners are often out of sync, missing each other
all aspects of health and behaviour and Sunflower has found that if it sorts out much of this underlying confusion that children respond far better to teachers or additional specialist help they may be receiving. The Sunflower Programme activates the neurological integration of the eyes, ears, balance and co-ordination and ensures the two sides of the brain work effectively and as it should. It has had hundreds of children go through the programme and the results have been impressive. In a published pilot study, independently assessed by an Educational Psychologist, children completing the Sunflower Programme experienced a significant improvement in their IQ of 12-15 points in only six months, the equivalent of moving them from the bottom to the middle of their class; their health improved by 60% and their behaviour, self-esteem and selfconfidence by 65%. In a more recent analysis of a sample of 91 children (note: this included children with Autism, Asperger’s, Dyspraxic, Dyslexic and/or suffering from emotional trauma) pre and post programme, all children had improved by an incredible average of 80%. Interestingly, of the 91 children, not ONE child was musculoskeletally correct by quite a margin! Of the children assessed, only 23% were balanced and well-integrated using their body and brain to maximum effect. This changed to 100% of children reaching or nearing their full potential on completion of the programme. Indeed, every child that has found their way onto the Sunflower Programme has done so because of their learning and/or behavioural issues not because their parent had noticed or was concerned about their structural integrity!
It’s not surprising that nowadays more and more children are suffering from a range of challenges such as ADHD, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, Asperger’s, low selfesteem, poor concentration, allergies or headaches. In these days of fast food, fast living and quick fixes, there’s little wonder that many of our children struggle to keep up with the demands of school and life. As a parent, it is painful to watch your child struggle socially, behaviourally, academically or even on the sports
or passing on only partial information. Such misconnection can occur at any time during brain development, even in the womb, but it generally remains undetected until obvious symptoms begin to appear, usually at school age and is the root of all types of learning, behaviour and social problems. Sunflower has created a measurable programme for treating children by testing their integrity and viability of the nervous system. It is the central nervous system that regulates and integrates
The Sunflower Programme helps establish proper brain and body function leading to a reduction or elimination of negative symptoms and behaviour thereby improving the ability to learn academically, socially and emotionally.

Yvonne Arnaud Theatre, Guildford 23rd May until 28th May
By Alexander D’Arcy This May, Patrick Barlow’s hilariously entertaining adaptation of Hitchcock’s classic war time, spy thriller, The 39 Steps comes to Guildford’s Yvonne Arnaud Theatre. Following almost a decade in London’s West End, this Olivier Award winning production is now on a full tour of the UK. The Guide 2 visited Southend’s historic Palace Theatre prior to its performances at the Yvonne Arnaud to get a glimpse of what audiences can expect on the night. Those familiar with Hitchcock’s film version (again, an adaptation of John Buchan’s 1915 novel), will know that the stage is set with Europe on the brink of War. The staunchly stiff upper lipped Richard Hanay is your hero as you join him on his escapades from London to Scotland and back in search of the mystery behind the illusive 39 Steps. Who can he trust? No one. Who will save the day? Hanay! Clandestine rendezvous are followed by comedic calamities and chased down with paranoid caution as Hanay finds himself embroiled in the secrets and
espionage associated with war time Europe. Will he save the Great British Isles from invasion and the impending doom penned to follow? Will he get the girl? Patrick Barlow’s adaptation is in fact a re-write of a script and concept born in the late 1990’s by Simon Corble and Nobby Dimon who called for Hitchcock’s adventure film to be played by a cast of just four personnel. The show’s hero Richard Hanay is played by one actor and is present throughout. The remaining cast members are then tasked with playing the remaining characters, sometimes performing multiple parts within a matter of seconds. Man 1, played by Guildford School of Acting alumnus Rob Witcomb told us that, “It was tricky at first definitely but that’s kind of the job of the show. It becomes slow motion almost because you’ve just practiced it over and over. There have been moments though. The more tricky things are not so much us changing our acting and accents but things around us letting us down. In one of the quick changes, I had to throw off a heavy anorak and then change in to an old lady but I stupidly double knotted the anorak and tried changing really quickly. But of course I had chained myself to this coat so we just had to improvise some fairly standard script stuff just to get me untied and in to the next character, so it’s more when you do something daft and trap yourself rather than the acting itself.”
This multi-character acting as well as the creative lighting, props, slick scene changes and a chasm of tricks from the actor’s hands, ensures that as an audience member you really become engaged with the antics being played out on stage. Of course the fact that three of the cast members are constantly on the move and switching characters at quite literally the drop of the hat ensures that there is never a dull moment on stage. Much of The 39 Steps success is of course down to the comedic prowess of Patrick Barlow’s adaptation. Witcomb added, “it’s the amount of different kinds of humour there are; you’ve got your slapstick but there’s also a lot of wit in there. There’s something in it for everyone and I know that sounds really twee and cliché but it’s the different brands of humour that would amuse most people out there. It’s not nasty, it’s not aggressive, it’s gentle humour but it does cover every sense of humour. Unless you’re completely humourless the audience will be amused at some point and that’s what I really love about it.” Through lightning quick costume and scene changes as well as the shear genius of the creative team behind the scenes that enables the actors to perform The 39 Steps with such flair and fluidity, this production is more than highly recommended, as Mr Witcomb tells us, to “anyone with a sense of humour.”

Next is the iconic Back to the Future starring Michael J Fox who, with the help of Doc Brown, played by Christopher Lloyd attempts to travel through time. Lastly, the rooftop cinema’s final showing is Pulp Fiction, a cult classic from 1994 that sees starts like John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson team up for a belter. Fox) is thrown back into the ‘50s when an experiment by his eccentric scientist friend Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd) goes awry. Summer changes a number of things in life, most notably we do a lot more outside. Be that eating, exercising or in this case: watching films. Camberley Rooftop Cinema is back for another year following a highly successful 2015.
PULP FICTION (1994) June 3rd 2016 | 20:45pm Vincent Vega (John Travolta) and Jules Winnfield (Samuel L. Jackson) are hitmen with a penchant for philosophical discussions. In this ultra-hip, multi-strand crime movie, their storyline is interwoven with those of their boss, gangster Marsellus Wallace (Ving Rhames); his actress wife, Mia (Uma Thurman) ; struggling boxer Butch Coolidge (Bruce Willis) ; master fixer Winston Wolfe (Harvey Keitel) and a nervous pair of armed robbers, “Pumpkin” (Tim Roth) and “Honey Bunny” (Amanda Plummer).
DIRTY DANCING (1987) June 1st 2016 | 20:45pm Baby (Jennifer Grey) is one listless summer away from the Peace Corps. Hoping to enjoy her youth while it lasts, she’s disappointed when her summer plans deposit her at a sleepy resort in the Catskills with her parents. Her luck turns around, however, when the resort’s dance instructor, Johnny (Patrick Swayze), enlists Baby as his new partner, and the two fall in love. Baby’s father forbids her from seeing Johnny, but she’s determined to help him perform the last big dance of the summer.
Tickets for this event have been on sale since the end of April, so they aren’t going to be around long, all viewings are purely adults only. The parking is free of charge – with special thanks to Surrey Heath Borough Council – and all attendees are welcome to bring their own food and drink.

TALKING TO:
Balletboyz By Alexander D’Arcy
TheGuide2Surrey.com/Entertainment
ENTERTAINMENT
Featuring two new commissions by Pontus Lidberg and Javier de Frutos, the all-male company of BalletBoyz, return to Guildford’s G Live for an evening that takes an elegant, powerful and sometimes provocative look at life and death presented in BalletBoyz’s inimitable style. We caught up with Artistic Director Michael Nunn to talk LIFE. You return to G Live this May with your brand new production LIFE; ultimately telling the story of life and death via dance – quite the subject matter and itself quite the challenge – how was the show conceived? We were thinking about a new show and we wanted to develop a theme for the show so that we didn’t just give choreographers a free reign to do anything they wanted. And we wanted to create a show of two halves, a show with a balance and an overall narrative theme, but we wanted them to be completely different and we just came up with the idea of calling the show LIFE and offering the choreographers a choice as to whether they wanted to choreograph with life in mind or with death in mind. Pontus Lidberg immediately chose life and Javier de Frutos was very happy with the death side of it. It was interesting.
Is there a challenge that comes with performing a brand new commissioned piece of work as opposed to performing the classics? Sure. I think a lot of it at the beginning is a huge amount of physical pain. When you’re creating work and you’re pushing your body in all different ways constantly through that period it’s really tough and can become quite depressing. Billy (Trevitt) and I used to call it chemical depression, where your body is so sore that you don’t actually want to do anything anymore because the toxins in your body just make you feel dreadful. It’s gruelling! Once you’ve got it and it starts to build into your body memory then it is fine and you can repeat it 50, 60 times on tour.
If people follow the BalletBoyz Instagram account they can see the pain and suffering that the dancers’ feet go through – are there any preventative or post measures you take to reduce the battering they take, or is it very much suck it up and dance type scenario? They’re very good about taking care of themselves. They do a lot of work on their bodies to ensure they’re constantly fit. But also when you’re on tour and moving from venue to venue the floors are always different so there’s always going to be little scrapes and bruises but luckily we’ve had no ma jor injuries on tour which is great.
How do the BalletBoyz differ from other dance companies around at the moment? One of the key differences is that we’re not a choreographer based company so when you come to our shows you don’t just see one person’s vision of dance. We collect work from choreographers all over the world and we’ve always tried to make our shows entertaining and fun. The work is still of a fantastic quality but we try to package it in such a way so that everyone can enjoy it and also to broaden the range of people that are into contemporary dance - it’s not scary, it’s something that everybody should enjoy and that’s one of our missions really.
Does the show have a complete focus on ballet or do you incorporate contemporary dance and music to give it a certain accessibility to a wider audience? Yeah it’s really tricky selecting the music for the shows. Often we give the choreographers options of what will work. You’re building a show to a climax obviously and this shows no different. We’ve got a newly commissioned piece of music by a guy called Ben Foskett for the second half. We’re also using some narration which will give it more context.
If you’ve never been to the ballet before, what can the audience expect on the night? I suppose, for one we’re not what you imagine a traditional ballet company to be. The boys don’t wear tights and they don’t dance on their toes. They’re a very strong force and I think when you come to the performance you can’t help but soak it up. There’s an intense energy and hopefully you’ll go home feeling entertained and exhausted.
What’s next for Balletboyz after LIFE? We’re hopefully premiering our new film in the autumn; we made a film last year which we’re just in the middle of cutting that at the moment. The boys go on tour across the UK and then another tour. We’ve got a film festival in Kingston this June which we’ve created, called The London Dance and Film Festival (9th – 12th June) and the boys will be performing there too along with lots of other acts.

FAMILY
MAY 2016
The ever brilliant Surrey County Show is arguably the county’s top-billed event. This Bank Holiday Monday 30th May, it returns to Guildford’s Stoke Park – and it promises to be bigger, better and more countryside-y than ever…
THE HISTORY OF THE SHOW Before you tell you all about what’s in store for 2016, let’s give you a very quick history lesson. The Surrey County Show was first staged in 1954, hosted and funded by local farmer Raymond Stovold. At the time, Raymond’s friends told him he was ‘barking mad’ and the event would be a complete waste of time and money. Raymond proved them wrong and now, over 60 years later, the show is the largest one day County Show in the UK, attracting up to 40,000 visitors every year. The show still has agriculture and the countryside at its heart, but there’s a lot more here besides…
TOP CLASS ENTERTAINMENT This year’s event, to be held on Bank Holiday Monday 30th May, is set to be as exciting as ever with spectacular Grand Arena entertainment and lots of activities for young and old. The Grand Arena will be the centre point of the show with James Dylan’s Stuntworld as the headline act. James boasts the most sensational and experienced motorcycle team in the country and will thrill the crowds with ramp jumps, wheelies, stoppies and many more remarkable stunts that need to be seen to be believed. Exciting competition is provided by the two show jumping classes, with huge fences tackled by some of the country’s most successful horse and rider combinations. The ever popular scurry driving returns with the tiny yet tough ponies always pleasing the crowds and the annual parade of champion animals takes place mid-afternoon. The Red Devils parachute team will provide the spectacular finale (weather permitting) to an action packed day. And naturally, there’s a whole lot more besides!
ANIMALS GALORE Of course, animals large and small are at the heart of the Surrey County Show. Visitors will be able to admire hundreds of cows, sheep, pigs, goats, horses, donkeys, chickens and many other small animals. The cattle tents will boast both dairy and beef bovines, including Jerseys, Highlands, Dexters and Herefords. Woolly ‘baah’-merchants will also be there. Spot the black Zwartbles, the striking Jacob and the crinkled Texel sheep. With almost 40 classes for goats and pygmy goats and pigs battling for honours such as ‘pig most like its handler’ and ‘grumpiest pig’, animal lovers will be in heaven. The show has earned a reputation for top class equine competition. Cobs, hunters, coloured horses and ponies, donkeys and all nine of the UK’s native breeds will feature this year. Tiny show ponies, elegant side saddle and powerful thoroughbreds are also on show. Keep an eye for the mini moos too. These colourful characters will be dotted around the show ground as part of ‘The Cow Parade’ – the world’s largest public art event.
BRINGING RURAL ACTIVITIES TO THE HEART OF THE TOWN Surrey County Show brings everything rural to the heart of Guildford. The Countryside Arena will feature falconry, sheepdogs, fly-fishing, gun dogs, terrier racing and hounds. Close by is the bees and honey tent, with a chance to roll your own beeswax candles and watch a live release every hour of these most valuable creatures. And don’t forget the floristry tent, as well as the competition with themed classes including ‘favourite celebrity’ and ‘favourite nursery rhyme’.

Head towards the cattle tents and you’ll find a working milking parlour with real cows! The Tilford-based Rural Life Centre will be in attendance, and don’t miss the spinners and weavers and the ‘100 Years in Farming’ display.
FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD Now we’re talking. The food hall and food theatre have proved so popular that this year it’s even bigger! Theatre demonstrations start at 10am and include cheese making, displays from chef Dan Britten and butcher Simon Taylor, the Abinger Cookery School and Gardener’s Question Time with John Negus. The food hall hosts nearly 50 stalls with food and drink from across the globe. If you fancy some local fare, call in at the Surrey Farmers’ Market where everything is locally grown, caught, reared, brewed, pickled, baked or smoked by the stallholder. Sample fine wines in the English wine bar and don’t miss out on fresh, local strawberries and cream. Mmmm…
SHOP ‘TIL YOU DROP With acres of trade stands you will be in retail nirvana at the show. On the main shopping avenues, you will find everything from rocking horses to wood burners to electric bikes, interspersed with cars, pet food and toys, luxury leather goods and garden furniture. The shopping and craft marquee will be filled with beautiful and unique pieces of jewellery, paper and wooden crafts, clothing and accessories, candles and gifts.
KEEPING THE CHILDREN BUSY If you’ve got youngsters, fear not - children of all ages will love their day at the show. They can start by participating in The Guide 2 Surrey scavenger hunt – visit our stand at the show to collect your pack. The hilarious Punch & Judy show will perform throughout the day as will the fantastic Sheep Show and the Wood Street Village maypole dancers. Head to Jubilee Wood for donkey rides and don’t forget the dog show! Mums can relax too thanks to the Boots baby changing facilities – back by popular demand!

nav skillz Passing on useful skills is all part of being a parent. Helping your home made clones understand to look both ways on the road, washing hands and even not putting their little brothers hat down the loo and pooing on it (true story) are all important. Increasingly though, there are skills that are falling but the wayside. Essential skills, like reading a map. ]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]] I have the dullest of memories sitting in Mr Urquhart’s geography lessons being force fed navigation and hating it. The difference came when we grabbed our maps and compasses and went outside into the sun, much to the envy of 5B who were trawling through Pythagoras with Mr Parker. Map reading’s great fun and seriously useful. So ditch the Crap-Nav, grab a map and head out into the sun.
What You’ll Need: A map might be a bit handy here. Map wise I’m going to unashamedly plug here: Ordnance Survey are the best and I’m not willing to enter debate on that so shush. You can buy a decent Ordnance Survey map of Surrey walks, for example, from WHS Smith for about £8. Aside from this, you’ll need to wear sufficient clothing to see off the elements, a mobile (no Google Maps) should you somehow get lost and a can-do attitude.
How to Start: First of all, leave the child on Dartmoor at around midnight and drive away. Obviously don’t do that. Oddly, the first thing I’ll advise you to do is not bother with a compass. Bear with me. Using the compass to nav comes a bit later: First we have to get the little SAS troopers to understand a map. As I’ve said OS maps are great but they’re a little unwieldy for a kid because they’re big sheets of paper. Fold your map down to a manageable size or spread the map out on the table so you can all lean over it like a general planning an advance. Now it’s time to start teaching them what it all means…
What the Hell am I Looking at? Remember to a kid a map is nothing more than weird symbols erratic lines and numbers. Before you head to Pen Y Fan it’s best to teach them some basic symbols before going outside. (Along the bottom of the map you’ll find key so you don’t give a way that you know sod all). Decide where you’re going to walk later and concentrate on that area on the map and concentrate on how roads are shown on the map, what streams look like, how’s a footpath shown, what’s a wooded area look like compared to, say, a child-swallowing marsh.
FAMILY
TheGuide2Surrey.com/Family
If you’d like a bit of a heads up before purchasing your big ol’ map, tap in ‘Ordnance Survey key’ into a search engine and have a little look. The symbols make a lot of sense and they’ll be at the bottom of your map anyway, but brushing up on your map knowledge before taking an enormous paper behemoth out with you into British summertime can’t help.
Oh Crap - Contour Lines… But Will (that’s my name), what about contour lines? OK so contour lines are crazy confusing. For now, just explain the theory of them and then go fetch the Lego (that the little ones tipped out this morning at 6am because hey, it’s a Saturday). You’re going to use this to get them to understand how a hill is sectioned. Right, so if you can imagine building a hill made out of the Lego, and then get the monkey to draw the outline of the hill from the perspective of looking down on it. Explain to them how each layer of bricks relates to the contour lines on the map. Point out to them that the top of Lego Mountain is a small circle, just like on the map. If you can, and you have mad Lego skills, build into the hill a steeper side so you can show how the lines are closer together on the map.
Right! Now Go Outside… Okey-dokey, let’s get them outside before we all die of boredom (or get distracted with the aforementioned Lego). Remember I was saying that OS maps are crazy big and will be hard for little Tarquin or Roberta to handle? Well, a good idea is to photocopy the bit of the map you’re going to use and shoving in a clear document sleeve so that the wee ones can manipulate it a bit. When you’re heading out try and choose an area which has some hills (Surrey Hills?) so you can show contours (because we haven’t talked enough about those). Your continuing mission Captain Kirk is to teach them how to read the land and how it relates to the map. Point to things in front of you and show them on the map. Try asking them to find things on the map in relation to where you are. When you’re on the move get them to check where they are when you’re crossing things like railway lines (look both ways for god’s sake), streams, roads and stuff like forks in the path. So there you go – your experience with an Ordnance Survey Map explained. Get out there, get exploring and remember to (metaphorically) say “hey – thanks Guide 2 Surrey…”
There you go – the complexities of contour lines explained using those famous bricks. Trust us, your kids are gonna love it.

WATERCRESS FESTIVAL Sunday 15th May, Alresford On Sunday 15th May 2016, this nationally acclaimed annual festival will bring together thousands of visitors drawn from the local community and from far and wide to celebrate watercress - the superb locally grown, delicious and versatile crop. Alresford was voted Country Life’s ‘Favourite Market Town’ in the South-East. So it will be no surprise that the entire centre of New Alresford in Hampshire becomes a huge street festival. Hampshire Farmers’ Market and others create a large food market showcasing the very best local producers and a number of celebrity chefs demonstrate some delicious dishes. There will also be a large festival market with stalls selling arts, crafts, jewellery and clothing, items for house, garden and much else besides. And many of the town’s shops will be open. Music and dance are always central to the festival, so there will be a day full of performances by bands, Morris dancers and local school children. One of the main highlights of the festival is the street cavalcade at 10.30am when jazz musicians, Morris dancers and local school children accompany the Watercress King and Queen who sit atop a horse and cart. The children distribute the first of the season’s watercress harvest to festival-goers. For more information, visit: www.watercressfestival.org

MAY 2016
WHERE TO EAT: THE BOTANIST A concept like no other, The Botanist offers a wonderful selection of food and drink in a venue that exudes both style and substance... The latest of a burgeoning nationwide chain, The Botanist is a fitting entry into Farnham’s old town hall building. Upon arrival, a well-selected playlist of rather cool music (think Nick Cave and old MJ tunes, but there’s live music in the evenings too) compliments the suitably modern unique selling point – namely, a selection of botanical cocktails (more on that later). Food is inspired by the deli, rotisserie and BBQ, and there’s live music in the evenings. Versatility is certainly a strong point. Anyway, let’s move onto the location. Farnham High Street, all cramped and pretty and typically English, lends itself well to this stylish joint. It rather jumps out at you, a delightful surprise in this increasingly trendy Surrey town. Farnham isn’t short of places to frequent, but such is The Botanist’s originality, it’s no wonder they’re already known to be rather busy. The décor consists of exposed brickwork and trendily distressed retro floral motif
that runs throughout this bar/restaurant. The Botanist actually looks fantastic; a truly impressive interior that oozes cool yet offers informality and warmth. It sure looks the part, but 21st century aesthetics will count for little if the consumables aren’t up to scratch… First up, we had to sample one of those famous cocktails. Having discussed numerous options that appear on the frankly biblical menu, I settled on the signature Botanist cocktail, consisting of Ketel One vodka, rum and elderflower liqueur. My esteemed colleague/ photographer extraordinaire Fi ordered an English Mojito, consisting of gin, muddled cucumber and mint, lime juice, sugar and green apple liqueur and juice. A true spectacle when placed in front of you, the former went down with ease; sweet but not saccharine and hugely refreshing, it made for a brilliant meal accompaniment. We should note that the ‘Anthology of Ales’ – consisting of literally dozens of options – is a must for the beer drinker. Onto the food and for the starter, I chose the Sardines in a Tin with toast and hot sauce, while Fi went for the Chicken Liver and Rum Pate with chutney. The former was deliciously cooked, soft and flavoursome yet not overpoweringly fishy – enhanced significantly with a dash of lemon and some hot sauce – and looked delightful in its tin, but the latter stole the
show, with the pate itself served in a mini flower pot. Having surreptitiously nabbed a bit, the creaminess and perfectly blended flavours of the pot were truly set off by the beetroot and onion chutney. A visually appealing triumph to begin. In the name of research, we then decided to share a Botanist Deli Board, consisting of Greek Salad, Chorizo, Poached Salmon and Lancashire Blue Cheese. In the name of saving a few words to our already oppressive word count, I shall simply recommend that you try and insert this (in our case, superfluous) course into your eating experience here. A delightful blend of brilliantly prepared morsels, particularly the plump and juicy salmon. Moving on to the Main Course, I chose the Lamb Kofta Hanging Kebab, complete with Properly Seasoned Chips. Coming out on an eye-catching contraption and smelling delightfully aromatic, the lamb was a thick spicy chunk of hearty deliciousness, enhanced with the sweet chili, ginger and garlic butter sauce. Hearty without ever heading into unadulterated stodge, the plate was, of course, left clean, and the fries were a crispy, properly seasoned delight. Somewhat more wisely (due to soonto-appear stomach stretching issues), Fi chose the lighter Pan-fried Seabass Fillets with Spinach, Tomato and Piri Piri dressing. The crispy skin, flaky seabass
FOOD & DRINK
TheGuide2Surrey.com/Food-and-Drink
and fiery dressing was arguably the highlight of the whole meal, a truly exceptional blend of spice and soft and light flavours causing approving silent nods between us two fortunate foodies. Finally, we bravely ordered dessert. Unable to resist a Traditional Trifle Sundae, I was suitably delighted with the classic, kids-bookillustration presentation of the cold take on this classic, which was essentially Britain in a glass. Bursting with fruit, fresh custard and delectable ice cream, I was able to find room in my stretching tummy I did not previously think possible.

Warm Chocolate Fudge Cake was the order of the day for my colleague, and after negotiating a bit for myself, I can vouch for the assertion that this was a surprisingly light and flavoursome slab of goodness. Not dense and wet nor flaky and dry, and with the perfect amount of sweetness, this was the ideal choice for course number four.
Deli Board £9.95
The Botanist could so easily prove to be a style-over-substance venue, good for a drink but not much more. However, the atmosphere and hugely knowledgeable and attentive staff, coupled with the sheer volume of goodies on offer makes this new haunt a triumph. You really could keep coming back here for months and not get close to completing the full cocktail list, and the food is truly delicious; brilliantly presented and yet utterly without pretension. In a nutshell; enjoy a floral foodie experience at The Botanist…

Guildford Beer Festival 2016 One of the town’s best-known events returns to Guildford Cricket Club on Friday 10th and Saturday 11th June…
We’ve said it before and we’ll say it until we’re blue in the digital face – the words ‘beer’ and ‘festival’, when placed together, form the most glorious of event titles. It evokes the excitement of summer - supping on a glorious ale, the hazy delights of wondering around a green field. Magic. And we can scarcely think of a better example of this than the Guildford Beer Festival, taking place as ever on Guildford Cricket Club - The Sports Ground in Woodbridge Road, very close to Guildford town centre and its mainline rail and bus stations - over three sessions on the 10th and 11th June. Guildford Beer Festival has only been around for six years – the inaugural Guildford Beer Festival was held in
August 2010 – and yet it has quickly garnered a huge and enthusiastic following due to its ethos (which we’ll come to a little bit later) and, erm… well there’s lots of lovely beer and cider to sample. What’s not to love? The GBF will feature around 80(!) different cask ales, sourced from independent and microbreweries in Surrey, Hampshire, Sussex and Berkshire. There will also be a wide selection of ciders, and a separate bar with wines and soft drinks, so you don’t even need to love beer to attend. Oh, and don’t worry about our famous British weather - there is cover in two large marquees with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. Free parking is also available at the ground. Indeed while there are numerous reasons to visit, we feel that one of the best aspects of GBF is the inclusive feel of the event. There has often been a misconception that the beer festival is the pursuit of a certain ‘type’ of individual and that it doesn’t offer enough for your average, casual IPAsipper. Not so here; the emphasis of merriment, live music and enjoyment means that the festival has gone from
a niche, small event to one of the most important dates on Guildford’s summer calendar. Of course, commitment to independent brewers from Surrey and the surrounding areas is an important ethos for Guildford Beer Festival. While the craft brewing movement has made huge strides in recent years, it does mean that these small organisations need to promote their glorious golden, brown or black beverages as much as possible. As such, every single beverage you will sample this weekend was conceived not more than 30 miles away from the site. Ticket prices per person are £10 for each of the three sessions. CAMRA members receive tokens entitling them to free tokens upon production of their current CAMRA membership card. The admission price includes a free GBF tasting glass and souvenir colour programme. Tickets may be purchased online at or in person at the Guildford Tourist Information Office, 155 High Street, Guildford GU1 3AJ.

THE BEVERAGES Hogs Back Brewery
Little Beer Company
Fancy Some Cider?
Once again the headline sponsor of the event, the brilliant Hogs Back Brewery – based in Tongham near Farnham - will be taking the opportunity to showcase a couple of new tipples at the Guildford Beer Festival. A new ale named Three Hogs will be debuted along with a new IPA called The Outback. GBF will also have the full range of other Hogs Back drinks including their craft larger Hogstar and delicious cider Hazy Hog.
The closest brewery to the festival – their headquarters are located a stone’s throw away on Midleton Road – the Little Beer Company are bring out a few special treats this year. The festival will see their usual range on offer, but also the brewery is bringing along a special 350 pint Oak barrel with a new brew, just for Guildford Beer Festival. Back by popular request, the Little Wild at 5.9% abv is not available in any pubs but will be making an appearance at the festival. The team are also working on an exciting new innovation wheat beer too…
For the apple-lovers amongst you, the cider offering at GBF is always exceptionally popular. This year it has been announced that the festival will this year feature a great local producer based even closer to Guildford - The Garden Cider Co, based in lovely nearby Chiddingfold. What’s notable about these guys is that each year over 4000 local households bring them their spare garden fruit and in return receive a share of the cider made back for free. In additional to their usual core range the team are also working on fulfilling the Guildford’s public appellate for fruit ciders with a lovely Elderflower cider and great blend of Plum and ginger cider. Lovely…

Silent Pool Distillers, GUILDFORD
Gin! One of the go-to thirst quenchers of an English summer; what better serenades and soothes the pallet (and indeed the person) than that of the fragrant juniper berry infused beverage. Located on the Duke of Northumberland’s Albury Estate, the distillery takes its name from the mythical, spring-fed pool from which it draws its water. The Silent Pool Distillers make it their mission to create high quality, small batch, artisanal spirits of the very highest quality, using only the finest local ingredients. Right up The Guide 2 Surrey’s street, to be honest. Drawn by a common passion for the precision and innovation of craft distilling, whilst using water from the very Silent Pool they take their name from, Cory Mason and his team are creating some very exciting spirits. Having transformed a collection of dilapidated farm buildings situated on the Albury Estate into a state-of-the-art distilling station, the small band of merry
men have set to work on creating some amazing drinks for your pleasure. Through botanical brilliance and their reluctance to settle for the ‘simple process’, the team have sourced the very best copper distillers and equipment, whilst also using traditional methods to produce a selection of full-bodied bottled fun juices. The first distilling took place in October 2014, with two gins initially launched – the Silent Pool Gin and Albury Limited Release. Now, you can add strawberry, blackberry, apricot and plum flavours, plus these two brand new additions… First up, the distillers’ first foray outside of gin: Albury Limited Release Vodka. Handcrafted by Silent Pool Distillers with a hint of Rye, delicious, smooth enough to slip on the rocks or enjoy with tonic – and at 40% abv, it’s a wee bit stronger than your white label, and infinitely better tasting… And then there’s the Admiral Collingwood Navy Strength Gin. The Silent Pool distiller is related to Admiral Collingwood, the man who took over from Nelson when he fell at the battle of Trafalgar and ensured from his ship the Royal Sovereign that England prevailed – so they thought it would be nice to revive
an old family recipe. This is a big juniper gin, with a punch to match; at 57% abv you’d better make sure you have your sea legs on… If you really want the full Silent Pool Distillers experience, may we heartily recommend their 90 Minute Experience. You will be taken through the production process, the botanicals, and flavours and how they work together to deliver a multi levelled and complex tasting gin. You will also be able to taste some of the various stages in production and some of the other spirits Silent Pool produce. The setting is next to the mythical Silent Pool, the source of their water - and the ghost… Gin Experiences take place on various dates across the year so be sure to book now to avoid disappointment! Enjoy the Silent Pool Gin experience: Tuesdays and Thursdays 7pm, and the last Saturday of the month at 4pm. Tickets are £15 and includes a £5 voucher to at Silent Pool

rtisan, quirky, vintage, retro, industrial – all of these adjectives and a lot more describe the treasures in store at The Ark in Camberley. Unquestionably one of our favourite shops in Surrey, it’s high time you visited this award-winning Aladdin’s cave…
Antiques and vintage shops are two-a-penny these days, but none come close to the fabulous collection of treasures and curios to be found at the Ark in Camberley. The assortment of gifts and goods here run every gamut of quirky, retro, vintage, industrial and antique cool; the Ark is brimming with ideas to add individuality and style to your home. Despite only opening in November 2012, The Ark was awarded Winner of Best Independent Business by shoppers at the Camberley Town Centre Business Awards in 2014, and was nominated again in 2015. Tony Sandells’ distinct market style store – now in its biggest location since forming in 2006 - stocks homeware, one of a kind furniture, ornaments, linens… and those are just the conventional items. Quirky new additions pop up so regularly at the Ark that Surrey and Hampshire treasure hunters now know exactly where X marks the spot! A Google certified shop and proud member of The Federation Of Small Businesses, The Ark offer an eclectic mix of styles, with a variety of original, old and untouched items, retouched furniture and repurposed pieces. The latter involves turning old pieces of furniture into something entirely new. Indeed, many of the pieces you will find at The Ark will be total one-offs, or at the very least extremely quirky; think old French

riddling racks that hold up to 120 bottles of Champagne, or tables made from old salvaged items and reclaimed timber. Indeed, shopping here may well make your new purchase something of a talking point… Offering a no-frills, indoor ‘market place’ environment, the discoveries in The Ark are exciting and unique and yet the shop itself is refreshingly free from pretension. The huge floor space means that they can stock large items, from three metre tables to big wall units, all the time. Indeed, you can even hire many of the stock items in the shop. Moreover, through customer feedback, The Ark have even introduced a range of paint. The Frenchic paint will mean that Ark aficionados can paint their own furniture. Why not take the opportunity to get a little bit creative with items that are also available to finish from The Ark? Naturally, delivery is available for your larger purchases and you can order some items online too. This service will be expanding over the next few months when the new web site goes live, really exciting times ahead…… The Ark even provide trade and interior design, having supplied the likes of Jack Wills and The White Company with items for shop fitting. Sourcing their pieces from across the globe, The Ark receives new arrivals every week so that repeat visits will mean a new treat; there’s not too many places that can boast a new and unique treasure waiting for you each time you visit. On that basis, we feel like your ongoing attendance is an absolute must… (Stay bang up to date by following the links to our social media feeds, all available via the Home page)

ANTIQUE RESTORATION HAMISH CURRIE RESTORATION
Traditional Workmanship French Polishing Turning Gilding - Patching
Having restored furniture since 1989, Hamish Currie’s passion for his work is evident; he relishes working on antiques and restoring them back to their former glory. Hamish has worked on many interesting pieces over the years from clock casings and writing boxes to re-gilding mirrors or repairing large dining tables. No job is two big or small to be considered. One of the most popular restoration jobs is fixing wobbly legs or removing water marks. Hamish will always try to use traditional methods of restoration wherever appropriate and he strives for the highest quality and attention to detail. When asked about his work Hamish said “I love the diversity of my job. One day I am fixing a wobbly Ikea table the next day I am re guilding a mirror from the 17th Century. If I work on a piece and my customer cannot see where I have repaired it I know I have done a good job!” Hamish’s main areas or work include repairing damage, such as wobbly legs or missing carvings or mouldings. He is also trained in polishing, French polishing, guilding, carving, turning and cabinet making. He has worked alongside some of the best restorers in the country and major jobs have included Downing Street, Claridge’s and Goodwood. Customers can opt to add-in additional extras such as under-floor heating, double-glazing, saunas, steam rooms, whirl pools, bars, wall-mounted TV’s and surround sound. Whether you choose Redwood or Cedar, you can rest assured that all pavilions come with Crown’s signature mark of quality. Finally, you’ve no need to concern yourself about the environmental impact: all of their timber is FSC and PEFC, meaning it has been carefully selected from wellmanaged and certified forests. Testimonials come from former Dragons’ Den investor Bannatyne, who calls the garden rooms “terrific” and Titchmarsh have also helped drum up new business. The gardening guru said of the firm: “Crown Pavilions can really change your life. These buildings manage to extend the use of your garden at both ends of the year.” Crown Pavilions pride themselves on their ability to design and create garden rooms to bespoke specification which look splendid and perform beautifully. Most important of all, they promise to deliver an outdoor room that looks stunning and performs beautifully – and which you can enjoy in comfort and style all year round. TEST DUMMY Wakeboarding
By Tayler Willson For someone who has a profound fear of open water and everything that’s lives amongst it, being plonked into it and tied to the back of speed boat is kind of a big deal. I mean, is there a swimmer alive who hasn’t at some point, in open water, found his/her mind thinking, “What the hell is underneath me at this precise moment?” and by the very act of thinking it, opened the floodgates to a self-generated vision of some great monster of the deep rising up underneath to take you SCHWOMP in one great bite, exactly like that Jaws poster? It can happen on the calmest day, in the murkiest or clearest waters, on your own or in a crowd. Suddenly you think “what if”, and wham. In comes the Fear. The heart starts to race, panic starts to bubble, your stroke goes and before you know it you’re thrashing helplessly for shore.
the water by the strong Mytchett Lake current, running out of air. An almost certain end to my sad, sorry little life. But that was a dream. And dreams aren’t real. All the aforementioned belongs in my head.
The nightmare I had the previous night didn’t help proceedings either: me, tied to the back of a boat, held under
But for those who aren’t familiar with the sport of Wakeboarding, and I can’t imagine many aren’t as it’s a very Surrey
Regardless, I, as I do every month (more I feel for the enjoyment of my cackling workmates), headed to my latest Test Dummy challenge at Mytchett’s Quays Wake and Ski for a spot of Wakeboarding. In open water. On the back of a speed boat. The closest I’d been to anything like this before was back in my skateboarding days when I was eight or nine, and even that only lasted one badly grazed knee.
sport, it’s a water sport (not that kind). It’s skateboarding on water. It’s you, on a wakeboard, being towed at speed by something (usually a boat) along water. It was originally called skurfing and arose in the late 1980s after the advent of skiboarding (now snowboarding). When I arrived I was met by Faye who I’d been exchanging emails with beforehand. We had agreed before to try and arrange this for a sunny day to avoid hyperthermia and as luck had it, we’d hit the jackpot. Not a cloud in sight on a perfect spring day. I duly signed a waiver declaring that if I did indeed drown my life into absolute nothingness, it was all entirely my fault, and then I headed to dock. I was given a wet suit (questionably sized for a guy with a gut like mine) and a helmet,

slipped and secured myself onto the wakeboard, and I was ready. I was beginning my wakeboarding life on the cable: an electronically controlled line that would tow me as I got to grips with how this whole wakeboarding thing worked. I plopped into the water and set off. By set off, I mean dragged under water a few metres because my brain decided to freeze. Three attempts later and I was up, gliding on the water, like a neatly-thrown pebble, albeit with the elegance of a poorly-thrown rock. After ten or so minutes of trying to improve and perfect my technique – keeping my arms straight, stop sticking my bum out and bending my legs - I was ready to do the same, but in the deep end, on the back of a boat. Gulp. I lay in the water, holding on for dear life, before: “It’ll be the same, but the pull will be a little bit stronger. Okay?” I hear from the boat and I reply with a firm thumbs up, just before face-planting the
water and swallowing around three litres as I was dragged a good fifteen metres submerged. “Shall we try that again?” I’m asked, and I reply with a slightly shakier, weaker thumbs up. The same happens again. Mouthful of water, body almost torn in two. Then, as that saying about doing something third time and it being lucky goes, I did it. I was told to try and roll forward and almost force myself up level and I did it. I was properly wakeboarding. On the back of a boat. In the open water. Me, Tayler who hates all of the aforementioned, was doing all of the aforementioned and enjoying it. New levels were being discovered. I became cocky as I strolled behind the boat trying to look cute for the camera – I even at one point contemplated doing a one-hander – my cockiness was soon wiped away as I tumbled into the below waves, again guzzling a good amount of water. We went another four times, each time with me feeling increasingly
comfortable. Before long my legs had totally given up (I had been to the gym earlier okay?!) and we headed in. I was told I was a natural by Fiona, our photographer, a compliment I took with a pinch of salt as she had told me the same thing a few months back when I roller-skied – something I know I was really terrible at. As I found shore, I had to admit that this had been the best Test Dummy yet. Not only had I overcome a big fear of open water (albeit I won’t be diving in again anytime soon), I had really enjoyed it. With summer rapidly approaching (and a pub next door), this could be the perfect activity to get involved with when you have the chance, be it in a group or individually. Regardless of how many of you there are, you’re guaranteed a cracking time. Trust.

Surrey Sports Park
7th May
29th May
The Maverick Race Original Trail Series is all about celebrating the beauty of the British countryside. These races are accessible to runners of all levels and with 3 route lengths to choose from, you decide on the challenge!
Summer’s here and what’s better in such (probably) fine weather – other than relaxing and eating fresh fruit and some fine wine – than pushing your body to its workable limits and getting fit and maybe getting a tan, too?
These friendly races are a fantastic opportunity to explore the less well-known areas of the ma jestic Polesden Lacey estate. From open fields with views over the Surrey countryside to estate tracks and forest paths; these cross country runs offer real variety. You can chose from 3 distances: Long which will be around 25k, Middle which will be around 16.5k and Short which will be around 8k.
This year sees the inaugural Guildford Triathlon - and you should give it a go! Whether a seasoned veteran, a competent runner or you’ve managed to avoid exercise since school, the Guildford Triathlon’s suitable for all abilities (you can even enter as a relay team of three!) But with only five hundred places available, you shouldn’t hang around as they’ll be snapped up pretty sharpish.

snooker Ronnie O’Sullivan vs Judd Trump 3rd June Starring the world’s most popular player, Ronnie O’Sullivan is settling scores with the young pretender Judd Trump. Ronnie is the current Masters Champion, a title he won for the 6th time in January. Add to that his five world titles, five UK titles, most ever competitive centuries and the fastest ever 147 break and you have a player who many regard as the greatest ever to hold a snooker cue. Judd is the future; with his brand of “naughty snooker” he has proven he can stand toe to toe with the Rocket. At their last match up, the 2015 Grand Prix Final, it was Judd who triumphed 10-7. With ma jor ranking events wins in China and Australia, as well as the 2012 UK Championship the ‘Ace in the Pack’ is ready and willing to settle this rivalry once and for all. It’s Winner Takes All in a best of 11 frame match at the home of world darts and it all ‘breaks off’. Forget the silent gentlemanly atmosphere of the snooker halls; this is rock and roll all the way. www.lakesidesurrey.co.uk/eventdetails

Head Coach Paul Dixon said: “I think it would be an understatement to say that this news came as a surprise to us, and certainly it’s a hole we’ll need to fill. “We understand where Matt is coming from, and we are happy for him that he is confident and comfortable with a big personal decision in terms of what he wants to do going forward.
“Thank you to the Flames organisation for giving me the chance to do this, and the fans for their fantastic support.”
“He has had a significant impact on the success of this club during a pair of stints with us, and we congratulate him on a great career not just with us, but domestically as a whole, and internationally.
Towe has iced for numerous clubs during his career including Cardiff Devils, Belfast Giants and Cardiff Devils in the Elite League, in
“We sincerely wish him nothing but success as he heads towards other opportunities away from the game.”

We talk to Player of the Season KC Ross-Miller and Coach Creon Raftopoulos on the conclusion of Scorchers’ maiden BBL season and look ahead to next season’s campaign... Scorchers point guard KC Ross-Miller picked up a trio of club awards at Sunday’s post-season event at Surrey Sports Park. The US import secured the Fans’ Player, Coach’s Player and Captain’s Player of the Season awards, marking the end a season which saw KC make a huge mark of the league with his high point scoring and strong ability to create point-scoring plays against tough opposition. Over one-hundred fans were present for the announcement on Sunday evening, which also saw Franchise Director Gavin Baker talk about Scorchers’ debut season in the BBL and Coach Creon add his thoughts on the team’s progress and future in the league. Fans voted Elvisi Dusha and Tayo Ogedengbe second and third respectively, with less than 1% between each player. “To win the coaches, fans and players awards is pretty cool,” said Ross-Miller after receiving all three of the evening’s awards, “I never expected to win them all. It’s a huge privilege. I’ve put a lot of hard work into my game since I came here and it just shows that it’s worked and I’ve impressed some people.” Despite Scorchers’ best efforts, however, they finished bottom of the BBL, something Ross-Miller isn’t all too familiar with: “I’m not used to losing, but I think playing in a new environment, playing with new team mates and with Coach Creon has really helped my game. “It’s been a really good first season for the team and I’m looking forward on how we’re going to be next year.” Coach Creon also remained in a positive mood despite not reaching the play-offs – one of his pre-season goals: “We had a lot of targets we were hoping to achieve this year and we’ve done pretty well. Our main objective was to get the fans back on side, to get them coming week in week out again and give them something to enjoy – we certainly did that.

Scorchers NEWS:
“We wanted to become a community club again and we’ve had lots of successful tournaments and coaching days with youngsters from in and around the county and that’s real progress. “As disappointed as I am not to make the play-offs, we showed a lot of progression from the last year. Visa issues and injuries didn’t help us at vital moments either, especially in the run in. “I said at the beginning, though, that we weren’t going to use any excuses. These things happen in basketball and you have to be equip to deal with them. If we aren’t that’s a learning process that we’ll take into next season and make sure it doesn’t happen again.” Creon’s already back planning for next season after a brief spell off and is determined to have everything in place for the start of the next campaign: “I’ve had a week away to relax and clear my head, but now I’m back at the Sports Park to ensure we don’t have a rushed pre-season like last year. I’m going to make sure we’re ready.” For information about training camps and other basketball activities going on over the summer, visit: www.surreysportspark.co.uk

TEST DRIVE: DS3
Citroen have always had a reputation for great looking cars with numerous quirks. While the former still rings through for the new DS3, the simplicity of the new car is actually what makes it rather brilliant… Having only ever really owned what we’ll call here ‘rustic’ cars, this scribe tends to be somewhat biased whenever a new automobile gets taken for a spin; they all seem great. However, modern cars can be just a little intimidating to this luddite – keyless starting, mechanical bits to move mirrors, funky gearboxes – so it was refreshing that the DS3 PureTech 110 S&S EAT6 Six-Speed Auto (to give it its full name) was actually pretty familiar. This model (which has an RRP is £17,895 OTR but prices start from £13,995) has an automatic gearbox, regular handbrake and a big old key for the ignition. This is not to decry the DS3 as old-fashioned, however – the award-winning PureTech 1.2 litre 3 cylinder engine is an exceptional bit of engineering. A brief detour down the A3 from the Freeborn Citroen Guildford dealership and I got the opportunity to put my foot down. The six speed auto dropped down a couple of gears and the little car burst into life, topping out at 70 (honest) in no time. Moreover, this car offers its own dose of 21st century technology too. The 7 inch touch screen, the slick looking contraption in the middle of the dashboard, functions as a sat nav, sound system, driving settings and smartphone connectivity. The latter is particularly exciting; the Mirror Screen uses Apple CarPlay and MirrorLink for Android to seamlessly mirror compatible smartphones on
the DS3’s touchscreen. An array of compatible apps mean you can check the weather, access maps, compose a text using voice control or locate a parking space with ease – and there’s much more besides. Back to the driving experience, and along the windy, tight roads surrounding Godalming the DS3’s handling is smooth and responsive (the company call this Dynamic Hypercomfort, which sums it up pretty well) and that automatic gearbox makes this particular brand of driving rather pleasant indeed. Should you be a commuter or a London driver, for instance, this particular model (in a very fetching dark purple) would be a fantastic purchase. Small enough to get into tight spots and yet it’s comfortable, with a roomy interior, the biggest glove box in its class and a sizeable boot. So it’s a perfect family car, too. Naturally, you are able to fully customise the DS3 to your own specifications. Chrome rear window lower trim, chrome door mirror covers, DS roof box, carpet floor mats, different alloys for your tyres, different trim, different roof graphics and of course a huge range of colours for the main body of the car itself – not a lot more you could wish for really…

Urban mpg 50.4 (5.6) 105
So a great looking, fantastic to drive car that’s very economical, easy to use and yet with a wealth of technology too. If you’re looking for a new hatchback, the DS3 should be very high on your list of considerations…
Extra-Urban mpg 72.4

BROOKLANDS HOTEL MAKES THE TOP 10 OF SUNDAY TIMES TOP 100 Brooklands Hotel has checked in to the top 10 of the Sunday Times Top 100 Small Companies to Work For, moving up 16 places from 25th last year, showing that there’s plenty of drive in the hotel. Brooklands is the only hotel to feature in this list and is rightly proud of breaking into the top 10 and being the first small hotel to do so in the awards’ history. The four star luxury hotel in Weybridge opened in 2010 on the site of the world’s first purpose built race track, scored 80% (1st) for the skills of its employees and scored 95% (5th) as a fun place to work. The feel good factor in the hotel is fuelled by the strong team ethos, supportive managers and plentiful opportunities to develop professionally. 98% of the team thought that their direct line manager regularly expresses their appreciation when a good job had been executed. Now in its 16th year, the ‘Best Companies’ lists measure and acknowledge excellence in workplace engagement. Only organisations with the highest level of overall employee engagement qualify for the 100 Best Small Companies to Work For list. Find out more at surrey-chambers.co.uk

Can you imagine not being able to speak or being unable to have a simple conversation… or knowing a great joke but not being able to share it with friends? People talk over you or worse avoid you completely. You are keen to learn, have some great ideas, but can’t express your ideas or ask a question; you can’t even tell Mum and Dad or your closest friend that you love them. That is the reality of life for a significant number of students at Treloar’s. Treloar’s campus in Holybourne is located just outside Alton in Hampshire. Treloar School and College educate and care for children and young people with complex physical disabilities. Our goal is to create a world where disabled children and young people learn to take control of their lives. In addition to gaining an education, they increase their independence, confidence and social skills. At Treloar’s, through a unique blend of education, medical care, specialist therapy and independence training, we are committed to helping the students achieve their full potential and make the maximum possible contribution to society. In a typical year Treloar’s students will have over 40 disabilities, the most common being cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy and spina bifida. Over 95% of the students use a wheel-chair, around 30% have little or no speech and tragically around 20% of them have a life-limiting condition.

In order to support our students we rely on a large and dedicated team of staff. Our team are committed to Treloar’s vision:-
‘To create a world where physically disabled young people learn to take control of their lives and dare to dream’. If you feel you have what it takes to support our students we would love to hear from you.
